Apparently, not only is it the first day of a brand new month, it is also International Children's Day. With that in mind, we should be very aware of the cry "Won't somebody think of the children?" which has been used a couple of times in the comments already this week. Here are some of the other things we are discussing:

  • Alex Wurz and his new team Superfund are set to make a heroic entrance into F1 - if they are selected, of course. The team have funding in place but aren't getting anything organised until they get the nod. It will be good to see Mr Wurz back in the sport, although I can't see him in the team principal role. Mr C thinks he might be quite good as the boss, however.
  • It's also Martin Brundle's birthday today, which is only really interesting because I was thinking about Alex Brundle and his performance in F2. I kept an eye on the results, and find myself interested in Brundle Jr, and Natacha Gachnang, and that is pretty much it. Anyone else catch it, interested in it, got a fave or already? Or couldn't care less?
  • BMW have confirmed in their Turkey preview quotes (oooh, is it that time already?) that they'll be running the double decker diffuser. Is it going to make any difference for them? Or have they scuppered their own season this early on?

That'll do it for now. The replay of the live streaming show we did last night is up if you feel like watching, or the edited show should be out this evening. Don't forget to vote on the Circuit Cup semi final, and I'll see you in the comments.

Maybe they should start getting ready for 2010. I mean, they have to start planning now to make sure they fall behind the new entries right?

Kubica was right in hindsight. Had a chance for the driver's title until the 2nd to last race but no, Theissen has to plan for 2009. Now if where not for the facts that there is a bit of blue in the car'scolour scheme and that Lou is not cheer thme on I would swear they are Honda in all their disfunctional glory...

They're not, but Max may oblige them to stay. If that happens, though, LDM will be fuming. He'd probably lead the FOTA pullout himself.

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 01:45

They have entered, albeit outside the rules, but under FOTA they can say the entry was parley to circumstances beyond their control. Williams entry poses a problem, but they could then argue they were not obliged to sacrifice wider interests in the previous contract

    Since its quiet i thought i would register my surprise at the fact that Silver-Grey is Bernie’s favourite colour. Who would have thought? {Comment #15}

To be fair, that's pretty much the colour of his wardrobe and motorhome. Still, it's a surprise to me he was that specific.

  • Alianora La Canta01/06/2009 at 09:05

    Sounds like another attempt to split FOTA. I can’t believe Ferrari are any more committed than any other team {Comment #40}

That could be difficult. Ferrari made the same conditions as everyone else. Therefore, to accept Ferrari's entry, the FIA has to accept all the teams' entries. Otherwise it will have made the changes necessary to accomodate all the teams, but rejected teams that didn't need to be rejected. The only way the FIA could justify it is by allowing enough new teams in to reject those FOTA members it didn't like - and I don't think there are 11 new team entries in the air. Even if the Superfund team makes 7...

Of course, it could cite breach of contract, but since Ferrari is arguing the FIA already has in forcing through the 2010 regulations, that might not cut much ice in court.

  • Flabbergash01/06/2009 at 09:08

They could sell/give the entry and obligations to some gullible individual, or perhaps one of the unsuccessful teams after the entry list is confirmed. That would meet the terms of the contract unless it has been very carefully written.

  • Alianora La Canta01/06/2009 at 09:12

Williams entry poses a problem, but they could then argue they were not obliged to sacrifice wider interests in the previous contract {Comment #46

Williams are arguing that under the contract they signed with Bernie in 2005, they too are bound by circumstances under control. (Force India have the same circumstances, but haven't made a big deal of it - yet).

Um... ...degauss button (if your monitor has one)?

Do you have another monitor you can plug in? If so, try it. If it fixes the problem (and neither degaussing nor thumping the first monitor works), either get a professional to fix it or send it to recycling.

If it doesn't fix it, you may have a problem with your video driver settings (that screen is far enough into Windows that it could be a software problem). Try re-installing the video driver.

Any way I can sort that without buying a new monitor?

    Unlikely.

Looks like the horizontal control has gone. Couple of things to try.

    1) Percussive maintenance - hit the damn thing.

    2) Move everything that has a power supply or magnets in it away from it and then leave it switched off for a few hours.

    3) See 1 - but to relieve stress. ;)

    4) Looks like a 17 monitor, so it's pretty unlikely to have a degauss function, but if it does it'll be in the menu options. Run that several times over a period of time.

More than likely - it's broken.

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 10:20

With that in mind, we should be very aware of the cry “Won’t somebody think of the children?” which has been used a couple of times in the comments already this week.

Hehehe, that made me chuckle :)

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 10:35

It might be fair to say that we might see more information about the Formula 1 game over the next few days as the gaming world has a big, big convention on named E3 where all the developers come out and release new information, show off new hardware and games etc and tend to give a great more detail into upcoming releases for the rest of the year, and with the PSP/Wii Formula One 2009 coming out in the Autumn, I'll be keeping my eye out for information just in case :)

Interestingly I've seen a lot of people who have said this. The beauty of the system as far as I can see is that you could make twitter in it. It is really a protocol under the bonnet which is really cool. The federated implementation is awesome.

It's just that on top they've built a really neat (but complex) application on top. But you wouldn't have to use that application.

It's the difference between outlook and e-mail. I would guess we'll all be using the wave protocol instead of e-mail in a bit. But we won't just be using that front end we'll be using lots of different clients. Like now we use Outlook, gmail, Yahoo Mail, pine, etc.

    have you seen this: http://etherpad.com/

basically the same thing. also, have you tried dropio's relatime presentation yet? not much use to spc, but i can see the appeal in an office environment.

  • Alex Andronov01/06/2009 at 14:47

    have you seen this: http://etherpad.com/

    I haven't, I'll take a look.

The thing that I really liked in the presentation was the part where you could grab the middle of a paragraph and ask a question and that information would be branched off into a tree conversation.

That mirrors the real world much more for me. I don't often sit down in different rooms where we all work on a document at the same time but much more likely a document will be distributed and all of the different people will have thoughts about all of the different parts. One department asks, "does this clause mean we won't be able to use this in Australia", another person says in reply to the question, "we asked legal about this and we're waiting for a reply", answer comes back, "Yes you won't be able to use this in Australia", Then somebody goes into the main doc and makes it say, "Note: This means you can't use this product in Australia". And later you can see why this note got added.

I doubt this will get through, though. Fitton couldn't keep it open after 1992; why would it be any different now? For all we know, Max may have just whispered to him to get an entry in as a buffer against FOTA...

nope. capsis international are associated with f1-live. are they the parent company, or the publishers or something.

i guess capsis pay for the article to be written (and by written i mean copied and pasted). gmm are preferred source for capsis/f1-live but sometimes they use other sources.

at least i think that's how it works. must investigate sometime.

they can't be the parent company - ESPN bought the racing-live family, not the entire capsis company. more likely they are a minor news agency...

    Did you try Googling it?

  • Journeyer01/06/2009 at 15:51

I am missing the logic here:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75762

The former Williams and McLaren driver reckons that because F1 is not Superfund's core business, but rather a well funded, soundly structured start-up team aimed at becoming a key marketing tool for the successful investment company - in the same way that Benetton and Red Bull approached the sport – it has a better chance of surviving than some of its rivals./blockquote>

I guess he's referring to the Toyotas and the Renaults, but this is dangerous in that it's dependent on the whims of Superfund. If they're not interested anymore, they can easily pull out. Teams with F1 at their core on the other hand (like Williams and McLaren) will race whatever happens...

  • Journeyer01/06/2009 at 15:51

No suprise since they've been advertising F1-Live on their website and carring their stories for years now. It just formalizes the relationship.

    Hey everyone,

Have you guys heard the March might be entering in 2010!!!

I am starting to wonder if only Williams Will be allowed to enter in 2010 and one team called FOTA, plus a whole bunch of useless entries that would make Super Aguri look well-funded, be allowed to race in 2010...

Meaning that Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Toyota, Brawn et all, have to come up with a comprise design to build a car...Sort of like an F1 version of Airbus...

And you guys think Japanese committee management was bad...

  • Dan Brunell01/06/2009 at 16:06

Don’t they have Dan Knutson? He’s a pretty good guy - I think either Joe or Mike Dooson mentioned him too in a previous blog entry

Dan is OK even though I've taken him to task about a couple of articles he has written. I haven’t seen any of his work around lately though.

At least he isn’t as bad as all the NASCAR guys they have on staff. Ed Hinton is terrible and always writes disparaging articles about open wheel racing every other month or so. The rest of the staff outside of Terry Blount are useless.

Final thing. I find it funny that ESPN has separate categories for “Racing” and “NASCAR.” More true than you could possible believe.

It is probably just me and the team at F1 Rejects, but I am excitied to see some useless teams in Formula One again. It provided a glimp at some future talent and a lot of entertainment. F1 has been missing its' clowns like Minadri and Arrows for years now.

I really don't get this Nascar/IRL-CART rivalry.. why is it there. They both race ovals and although the cars look different the end result is relatively similar.

Over here we don't really have that at all, would i be right in thinking that about 90% of people who watch BTCC would also watch f1?

If to give my two cents worth, a lot of it is based on regionalism in the United States and the fact that the moment the open wheel series split apart is the moment NASCAR started becoming really popular.

NASCAR has always been strong in the south while CART was strong on the west coast and mid west. When CART and IRL split, the quality of the racing (and the amount of races on street and road courses) went down dramatically in the open wheel department. NASCAR exploited and has been extremely popular leaving CART broke and the IRL on the verge of being broke.

Most NASCAR fans don't like open wheel fans because they think we are a bunch of snobs to be honest. It kind of feeds into the anti-intellectual nature that plagues many in the United States (thanks Fox News.)

While the few of us open wheel fans that are left are bitter and angry about what happened the last decade. Many blame NASCAR for dumbing down racing in America and for some of the behind the scenes stuff with the IRL/CART split.

    sidepodspace update

The space shuttle Atlantis is on its way back to Kennedy after landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It should just have arrived at Biggs Army Air Field in El Paso Texas where it will stay overnight before setting out for Florida. I have no idea why they need an over night stop after a 2 hour flight.

There are some great pics of the shuttle on the 747 at the link below. My favourite is at the bottom of the page. I love the fact that they add aerodynamic bits to the shuttle for these flights. You would think it had never been designed with flight in mind.

Over here we don’t really have that at all, would i be right in thinking that about 90% of people who watch BTCC would also watch f1?

I'm really not convinced that's true. There is a lot of crossover but there is also big chunk of motorsport fans who won't watch F1 because "it's too boring". Just as there are a lot of F1 fans who won't watch other types of racing because "it's not F1" (i.e. its beneath them).

    Thanks for the response Dan.

Hopefully f1 can move in to North America with 5 or 6 races a year. But the teams would need to agree to 30 races a year which they are too shortsighted to do, but hopefully bernie can lean on them somewhat.

Just hearing about GM on the C4 news. 21k job cuts, the loss of big marques. Not good.

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 18:26

. I'd just like to add that a NASCAR oval race is completely different to an IndyCar oval race.

In what way? I belive they are subtly different, but i wouldn't say they are completely different.

Obviously more contact, and the gaps are smaller in nascar, but what else?

  • Pat W01/06/2009 at 18:27

Struggling to understand the logic here! F1 will have maybe three race in NA, at most. 2x US + 1x Canada or Mexico.

IndyCar isn't dead yet, it doesn't need replacing.

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 18:27

yeah, but they are phasing out more and more of their non oval races, soon i suspect there will only be a handful left. the ones that are left will have to pay massively to get the limited slots, possibly making f1 less unattractive.

I'd have 2 races in Canada, 1 US east coast, Indy, 1 West coast (vegas/ long beach) and one in Mexico

  • Pat W01/06/2009 at 18:31

In what way? I belive they are subtly different, but i wouldn't say they are completely different. Obviously more contact, and the gaps are smaller in nascar, but what else?

Depends on the track. IRL is a lot faster, drivers don't deliberately ram the competitors off the track, no "competition yellows" - well, most of the time.

I want to make a disparaging comment about restrictor plates but the IRL aero package basically does the same thing at Texas so I can't...

  • Pat W01/06/2009 at 18:34

yeah, but they are phasing out more and more of their non oval races, soon i suspect there will only be a handful left. the ones that are left will have to pay massively to get the limited slots, possibly making f1 less unattractive.

I think that's as much down to the politics of NASCAR, they are associated with ISC who own a large number of ovals but will only sell season tickets instead of event tickets, thus the IRL attendance figures are terrible because the season tickets are bought by NASCAR fans..

I love F1 dearly but there is no way North America can support that many races.

I would love to see one in Canada at Montreal, one in Mexico at any place other than Mexico city (isn't Tilke supposely designing a track for some beach resort in Mexico?), and maybe two in the US. I would like the USGP stay in Indy with the motoGP track (which I like the layout more than the "s-hairpin" of the old USGP track) and one on the west coast at Long Beach or Laguna under the disguses of the Pacific Grand Prix. Heck we could share that round with Japan or another Pacific rim country?

IndyCar isn’t dead yet, it doesn’t need replacing.

Hate to tell you, but the IRL is on its' last legs. Tony George is the only one keeping it alive and his fellow family members who are members of the board at Indy want the IRL to die. They are losing a lot of money on the IRL. A lot more than they ever did with Bernie. The only thing they have going for them is that the Brickyard 400 (NASCAR) and the Indy 500 are still big cash cows.

The 500 will not die, it makes the family too much money and is the signature race. I think if the IRL was to fail, they will revert it to its’ roots a little bit. Make it an open invitation event. Heck, half the field already only runs at Indy.

If the George’s were smart, they would contact FOTA and NASCAR. Strike a deal to run Charlotte and Monaco a different week and bring their drivers and teams in with the stock chassis and engine. Rebrand it as a race of champions. They would actually make more money with that then they would propping up an entire racing series.

Like an oval Le Mans? That could work.. maybe.. but even Le Mans realised it needed a series the rest of the time.

Like an oval Le Mans? That could work.. maybe.. but even Le Mans realised it needed a series the rest of the time.

That is actually a good comparision. There are really only two or three races that make a profit in the IRL anymore: Long Beach, Indy, and St. Petersburg. A majority of the races before the split up used to do well, then Tony George got greedy and tried to out-NASCAR NASCAR by bringing everything in house and forming up with some of the tracks to strong arm the teams. That is why Penske and Newman Hass did not go to the IRL till CART was done for.

If the IRL wants to survive, they need to condense their schedule. Promote American drivers that aren't named Danica. Finaly, they really need to reform how they run the 500.

I can’t see the traditionalists going with you on that one!

I don't think they will have a choice.

Dan Greenwalt, boss of Forza Motorsport studio Turn 10, has announced the third instalment in the racing series, calling it the "definitive racing game of the generation", "memories of first cars" and the "glamour of the Hollywood chase". The game will feature 400 cars from 50 different manufacturers, all running at 60 frames-per-second.

"One button drive" was also mentioned, which is presumably a mode for children and idiots. Another feature, familiar to players of GRID, is the gameplay rewind function, which will presumably allow mistakes to be rectified with a snazzy bit of time-manipulation.

There was a hefty community element to the presentation, with much being made of the ability to design and share liveries, as well as a pretty useful-looking HD video editor, enabling uploads to the community. Choreographed cars were seen dancing about on an open, countryside track, as well as a more traditional racing environment, with damage modelling in clear effect.

    This year?! Sweeeeeeeet!

Man, it's gonna be interesting to see the battle between NFS Shift and Forza 3.

    Don't forget GT5...

If it ever gets released. ;)

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 19:56

Man, it's gonna be interesting to see the battle between NFS Shift and Forza 3.

Yep, definitely. The guys behind Project Gothan have something too but they've kinda split in two; one half working on the Forza team and the other making a new racing game that's more Wacky Races than Gran Turismo, le's say :P

But those two will definitely be the two to watch motorsport wise this autumn, then a bit of F1 in the Spring ;)

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 19:57

The guy who announced it seemed to over hype it quite a lot. I suspect Sthey might be expecting sony to finally announce when GT5 is coming out

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 19:57

Autumn for me. Finally, it pays to be a hardcore wii gamer!

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 19:58

Mind you, regarding the Race Pro DLC - there's other layouts for Road America? I had no idea.

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 19:59

You can be a hardcore wii gamer?

  • Chris01/06/2009 at 20:00

You can be a hardcore wii gamer?

It's hard, but yes. You just have a limited range of games.

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 20:01

It's hard, but yes. You just have a limited range of games.

There's new Monkey island stuff coming to the Wii y'know. I demand everyone with a Wii buys it. ;)

*giggles happily for Monkey Island remake* :D

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 20:02

It's hard, but yes. You just have a limited range of games.

Yeah, i have one, but dont use it that much.

I kinda fear for its future after that Microsoft Sheebang today

Same. However, we've got some good games due out this year. The conduit especially.

Um, can someone explain what monkey island is about? It seems to be liked, whatever it is!

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 20:07

Um, can someone explain what monkey island is about? It seems to be liked, whatever it is!

It's one of the greatest, most loved anf funniest series of games you could ever play. And gets you thinking too!

  • Flibster01/06/2009 at 20:07

I kinda fear for its future after that Microsoft Sheebang today

However - it has outsold the 360 by about 2:1, and each unit makes Nintendo a profit as opposed to the 360 which costs Microsoft money.

As long as it continues to get fun games, thats all that matters. Gameplay > Graphics

I still play Amiga games because they're more fun than anything around today.

  • Alex Andronov01/06/2009 at 20:10

I still play Amiga games because they're more fun than anything around today.

Absolutely... The wii does lack a little in depth. Outside of the Sports and Fit titles some of the games are a bit weak.

But the ones that work are so good and so involving mainly because they are a) simple and b) effective.

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 20:11

However - it has outsold the 360 by about 2:1, and each unit makes Nintendo a profit as opposed to the 360 which costs Microsoft money.

I agree with you, however the wii was popular because it was easy to use. removing everything makes systems even easier to use, not to mention not needing to buy extra controllers.

The wii will date quickly graphics wise, but that might not be a problem, but i think a bigger problem might be that its not powerful to run a motion capture system like the other 2

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 20:12

    Wooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I think Alex is pleased ;)

I played Virtua Tennis 2009 in HMV before work this morning. Tell you what, it's bleedin' realistic!

  • Flibster01/06/2009 at 20:17

The wii will date quickly graphics wise, but that might not be a problem, but i think a bigger problem might be that its not powerful to run a motion capture system like the other 2

    Why is motion capture important?

These things are for fun! Although, injuries from it could be entertaining. Just like the early wiimote injuries. :D

Nintendo have made so much money that they can afford to wait to release the Wii2 or whatever they're going to call it.

PS3 and Xbox360 are more than just games consoles, DVD players, HD movie players, media streamers and games consoles. Wii is purely a games console, and it's the best at it.

    Hey guys,

Hope you had a good weekend. It's been mega hot here. I spent Saturday at a Latin American Carnival, Sunday relaxing at a a barbecue...

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 21:21

In car looks best ive seen

did you see when it crashed?

I think a few people may get serious motion sickness from that. It's only a game yet that was huge.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 21:21

    Oh my god.

    I.... I.....

Yup, exactly what I just said.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 21:22

I think a few people may get serious motion sickness from that. It's only a game yet that was huge.

That's EA's emphasis in this game - immersing you into believing you are actually in that car and you have actually just crashed for real.

  • Lukeh01/06/2009 at 21:23

That's EA's emphasis in this game - immersing you into believing you are actually in that car and you have actually just crashed for real.

    I think they've succeeded :D

  • Nick01/06/2009 at 21:23

I thought the Forza presser sounded like they were worried about something, it fas far more aggressive than the rest of their presentation, I was thinking GT5, but i guess it was shift

  • Scott Woodwiss01/06/2009 at 21:24

    I think they've succeeded :D

    Hells yeah! :D
