And there it was gone. The first day of the new month has passed us by already, and we are well on our way to the Turkish Grand Prix weekend. It was a much quieter news day yesterday, with the only revelations being teams not signing up for next year. Here are some of the things we're talking about instead:

  • The Best of Sidepodpanel Series 2 was published yesterday, full of hilarious snippets from the six shows transmitted so far this year. You can also enjoy a compilation of Series 1 as well, which was published on Sunday, in case you missed it. I highly recommend them both, and if you fancy even more panelling, the links to the full shows are in the show notes of each.
  • Gavin has finally launched his new blog. He's been talking about it for a while, dropping hints here and there, but now we can all catch up on the blog - Making Up the Numbers. So far I have only briefly perused it, but I've already seen a couple of interesting graphs, so it's definitely going to be one to keep an eye on.
  • Finally, don't forget to make your vote count in the second, and last, semi-final of the 2009 Circuit Character Cup. This time we're pitting Suzuka against Monaco, and it's surprisingly closer than I thought at this early stage in proceedings. The poll closes at 9pm, and there'll be a 30 minute delay while we organise the final. By then we'll know who will face Spa in the final.

That's all for now. It's still rather hot in the UK, and opinions differ on whether this is bliss or a little on the oppressive side. Stick with Sidepodcast though, as we're always a blessed relief! I'll see you in the comments.

    Thanks for the plug Christine!

So I started the blog about three weeks ago and it has taken so long to launch properly!

I had so many things to do before I wanted to show it to you guys - collate the data, decide on a theme, decide on my approach... but by far the hardest thing was writing the post about the Brawns in Spain - because I found it difficult to prove or disprove any 'conspiracy' without making guesses or leaps of faith!

Anyway, I think I was successful and I hope you all enjoy it - I would love it if you provided me with ideas and feedback to improve the content ;)

This time of year would normally be heyfever...

But the other half has given me her cold.. so Bird Flu...

Hmmm...do I do some work and suffer?

Or... do I delegate it to my boss *it feels odd to say that* and spend the day watching Mel Brooks films?

I've spent a little time going through McLarens cars over the last few years and comparing their performance on track to see how bad this years car is.

Even with the dreadful MP4/19 in the mix, this years car is possibly the worst they have produced since 1995 with the MP4/10 - The initial McLaren Mercedes with the chocolate engine.

They even produced 3 different versions of that car - the B *or bulbous* spec so Mansell could fit in it and the C spec.

33 starts - 18 finishes. Best result of 2nd twice in the year. 30 points overall and 4 in the constructors championship

If it's not that one, then you may well have to go back to 1980...

This is how bad a year McLaren are having.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 08:00

This is how bad a year McLaren are having.

And yet all the talk is on Ferrari's bad start to the year.

Is that because we expect Mclaren to recover and Ferrari to just disintegrate?

  • Jeremy02/06/2009 at 08:07

And yet all the talk is on Ferrari's bad start to the year.

Looks like Ferrari has recovered form to me. I'm very interested to see how they go in Turkey

  • Flibster02/06/2009 at 08:08

And yet all the talk is on Ferrari's bad start to the year.

Is that because we expect Mclaren to recover and Ferrari to just disintegrate?

Ferrari were expected to be at the head of the field - testing away from everyone else hid their performance. McLaren testing with everyone else showed their issues and were expected to struggle so it's no real surprise.

The biggest issue with Ferrari is most of their failures this year have been very much public. Raikkonen's cockpit filled with smoke springs to mind... Add to that the appearance that Ferrari is going back to the 80's in their organisation and it makes a good story.

McLaren are making steps forward - but so is everyone else. McLaren either needs a massive step forward - half a second in reality, or to ditch this years car and work on the 2010 car.

This is how bad a year McLaren are having.

For me as a McLaren fan 2006 felt worse than this year. Even though we got 9 podiums, it was a hard year because we should have been winning. This year I knew we wouldn't win from day one, and somehow it seems a little easier to swallow.

I can'T speak for everyone but we've got a mega long weekend - monday (local holiday not sure why) and tuesday (anniversary for italian republic) so to celebrate I'm at work for 30 minutes to check emails and line up conversations about future job (Boston) and then head home to work there instead.

2006 was somewhat of a disapointment - but the car wasn't overly quick at the start of the year. It did mature towards the end of the year and put in some excellent performances - but they were unlucky not to win races. Particularly Australia.

I was surprised when I looked at the data from Spain how much Rubens dropped off in his third stint. If Jenson is anywhere near him he's going to have to make a Herculean effort to beat him!

next is Gael Monfils who will have the French crowd behind him. Monfils has been playing pretty well but their head to head is something like 13 games, of which Rog has won 12. It should be easy, but thats what they said about Haas, Mathieu and Acasuso and all of those games almost killed me.

Wimbledon is my favourite slam. And everyone elses by the sounds of it, one of my friends in London was trying to get tickets and it sounded like a massive hassle and she missed out in the end. For the Australian Open this year tickets for all the games were still on sale on the day of the game.

It is supremely popular. You put your name in the ballot to be selected for tickets, but it can take a few years before you get selected. Otherwise, you join the enormous queues for grounds admission and hope for the best.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 14:05

What is it about British Sportspeople that when a good one finally comes along after years of misery all people do is cut them down?

I'm not British so I can't claim tall poppy syndrome :D

I don't think it's that - perhaps because of a drought we over-indulge and over-expose the new stars to the point where people get sick of them.

I guess another example is Susan Boyle - although it happened VERY quickly for her :(

    Wow, epic.

I bought my semi final ticket super early because I had no idea they don't sell out here. I had no idea who I would actually be seeing so I was glad it ended up being Federer v Roddick. Next year I might wait for draws to be released and then buy tickets. There is about 10 other players I want to see "in the flesh"

  • Amy02/06/2009 at 14:07

Australia has a girl in the quarter finals for the first time in 21 years, yet I haven't seen her name in the news at all. It makes a nice change from SHE IS AUSTRALIAN AND THUS SHE IS CLEARLY THE FAVOURITE (which they still do to Mark Webber of course)

Australians are yet to realise there is someone other than Jelena Dokic in the womens sport.

Or hope for a lot of rain and a peoples Sunday

Or even better - a people Monday for the Mens singles final - like in 2001

My boss has only been to Wimbledon once, despite being a huge tennis fan. Lugky git managed to get to see the 2001 mens final. I had to watch it on TV. Awsome match.

I had to make it to the end... I'm the same with movies. I've only ever stopped watching a movie early three times.

I guess what I mean is, normally the Renault podcast is really interesting and insightful and I was looking forward to this one as I don't know much about Nelsinho.

But considering his dad was a real playboy, his son is quite dull in comparison :(

Just a quick question, if you're worried Murray could be a threat to Sir Rog, then surely whoever beats him would be even more so?

  • Amy02/06/2009 at 14:33

First game to Gonzo, hooray! Normally I dislike him because he grunts too much. But I can mute him. I can't mute that Murray's face.

I just realised I do not have enough internet to get me through to practice/qualy this weekend. Panic stations. Time to listen to tennis and not watch.

theres something to be said about playing winter sports. Although I always hated dragging myself out of bed on cold Saturday mornings for netball when I was 13. Theres a reason I watch sports and don't play them.

  • Christine02/06/2009 at 14:41

Um, Amy... this game might go on for a while!

they always deliberately have the Australian Open when the school holidays are on, which sucks because I have to work and I get jealous of all the school kids who get to go every day. Stupid full time life.

yeah, it's been ok thanks. our technology class had a huuuuuge argument with our teacher over which syllabus we're doing (a week from the exam) and it turned out we're right, which made me feel good because he kept bad mouthing me saying that i was wrong and that i don't know what i'm talking about. went for a bike ride after which calmed me down a bit, but didn't notice the nettle branch sticking out so my hand is a bit swollen. other than that....im alright thanks

it seems to be more and more common, and it's really not accetable. at my last school a teacher left following not teaching us any of the syllabus (ironically it was technology again there too) and it's happened at the same school with a differnet teacher but in A-Level this time. it's just very frustrating more than anything.

I worked out that I'd need to do 30'000 miles a year for a diseaseal to make sense for me.

Purely through higher cost of car, cost of servicing and cost of fuel... So far this year I've done less than 1500 miles.

Releasing the tech regs over a year in advance? Whose stupid idea is that?

You don't want the teams knowing what they'll have to be designing that early - they may actually have time to develop it properly and not work 24x7!

It's an interesting set of regs.

Major amount of standard components - but they are things you don't see - sub frames, suspension and brakes.

Cheap engines for privateers if they want them

Sounds good to me. Maybe someone should sent Max and the FOTA a copy of them?

  • Chris02/06/2009 at 15:55

    That's what I'm hoping for :D

Also, Nintendo are very good at keeping their things secret until they are close to release. I remember them announcing the sd card update at a conference, which was available to download ten mins later! Therefore, I'm hoping for a suprise again.

Last year's conference they spent 2 hours talking about how rich their are, how much money they have from the Wii and how a woman broke her ankle snowboarding so the Wii is safer because of that. So this years can only be more better tbh. when do do surprises though, they do tend to be good, so here's hoping too.

Don't remind me! Nearly as bad as Sony 2006

Another Mario Bro's game... again.... again... and Wii Fit Plus. That looks exactly the same and doesn't even seem to add anything useful that you don't need with Wii Fit.

If Flibster's around,.I tried that driver (cleaning out the previous one prior to installing the one Flibster linked) and it's not really done much. The colour is normal now, but the screen is still lobsided and.....not right. The driver I instaleld is actually older than the one that came on the computer, but I doubt re-installing would make a big difference. I am of course hoping this can be sorted without buying a new monitor, but I doubt it.

The problem started when I was putting GP2 into full-screen, and since then, it's not been right. Can you even buy bulky desktop monitors easily anymore? There's none in my Argos catalogue anyway.

You can't really. TFT's have taken over. The only CRT's that are commonly available are massively expensive as they are professional monitors.

TFT's do start from reasonably low though. 19" Widescreen monitors are from about £80

I just don't get what on earth the point of it is, it's a games console, not a heart machine. Wii Fit already has you running along and doing your stuff, surely with a big hospital-type clip on like that it's just a nuisance... I dunno. I don't understand it at all. I'm happy enough doing jogging or yoga or whatever on Wi fit without extra things like that. Like lou says, people don't need to buy it though.

  • Nick02/06/2009 at 17:24

I dont mind all this casual stuff, i dont use or need most of it. But these are functional products on the most part, not games. I just dont understand why they bring this stuff to E3, its a games conference. people don't show tv episodes at Cannes.

What that finger thing is, i don't know. maybe you have to keep your heart rate below a certain level during a horror game or something.

It was too hot to sleep with the window closed, and the birds were too noisy to sleep with the window open, which basically meant no sleep. You'd love it.

I was doing college stuff last night. Had the window closed because my landlord sleeps a couple of rooms down and I wanted to keep the noise down.

    Like a sauna it was..

They phoned up saying they're v. short staffed tomorrow, and I said I'd work as I could do with a bit of money going into next week too but I have a driving lesson in the middle of the day expecting my boss to sigh and moan at me, but his response was "Do you want a 2 hour lunch tomorrow instead of 1 then to make sure you get it sorted?"... I was kinda taken back when he asked that, obvious answer much :P

They'll definitely talk about the PSP because there's a new PSP coming out but sadly I can't see F109 getting coverage.

They kinda accidentally revealed GT would be coming to the PSP this year.

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 18:41

Can you even buy bulky desktop monitors easily anymore? There's none in my Argos catalogue anyway.

I have a 19" one you can have. Where are you?

  • Lukeh02/06/2009 at 18:42

They kinda accidentally revealed GT would be coming to the PSP this year.

It was the first title they pretty much announced on the PSP, where is it! Been so many years :D

I think it'll be shown off toay though, you are probably right.

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 18:42

I am going to disappear into the sunshine for a while with Motor Sport. The cover has Jim Clark and a piece on McNish and another on the Festival of Speed. What more could you ask for?

I may have to buy that and add it to the pile of Stuff I Have To Read.

  • Scott Woodwiss02/06/2009 at 18:43

OMG OMG OMG OMG! :D It's Kaz Yamauchi! :D

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 18:45

You can see it, although ill warn everyone that clicking this might make you dumber http://gizmodo.com/5275846/wii-vitality-sensor-turns-wii-into-the-definitive-nursing-home-console

And this is somehow a bad thing? You do realise the health profession uses the Wii as part of a fitness regime for the elderly, using the balance board? This is an excellent idea.

Depends how urgent the deadline is! I had one the other week but since it could be 'persuaded' I got away with another week added. Can't do that with exams though.

Nowhere in the west country at all as well but I promised myself not to go on about it anymore, wrote up a big blog entry about it all.

We don't have big events in the Westcountry, except Glasto. That's why we all go to Cardiff. To be fair to them though, they can't go everywhere. That it is billed as a 'World Tour' not a 'European Tour' does bode well for future dates though, it sounds like America/Asia will be added later, and that can mean more UK/Euro dates are added later.

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 20:16

As far as I see if, if it's a World Tour, go around the world. If it's a European Tour, go around Europe. I appreciate they can't go everywhere because a lot ofmpeople around Europe will miss out, but it's not like cardiff is a minor city or anything, especiaqlly for such a small World Tour if that's their correct wording. It';s just surprised me so much I suppose.

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 20:20

We'll see. I'd expect some worldwide dates later, and "due to unprecedented demand here are some more UK dates". Not that I want to get your hopes up unrealistically.

I don't like the idea of Sony having the monopoly on all of those licences though

I think they are open licences, i doubt they would pay for exclusivity for something then bundle it in GT when they could sell it to people on its own.

EA has a nascar game, and i believe DIRT has full WRC licences

  • Scott Woodwiss02/06/2009 at 21:26

I think they are open licences, i doubt they would pay for exclusivity for something then bundle it in GT when they could sell it to people on its own.

Perfect example is Ferrari. They were once exclusive to EA only and now look. They've been in PGR, Forza and now GT.

A lot of spec series are called Formula

a quick google for "formula" returns:

A set of specifications, including engine displacement, fuel capacity, and weight, that determine a class of racing car.

so a spec series should be classed as a formula, right?

  • me02/06/2009 at 21:46

    not even tenuously.

  • Jon Waldock02/06/2009 at 21:47

Formula is just a word, it could be replaced with "class" i guess if needed.

a looooong time, still need another 80 bottles i reckon, but i collected loads last week, so should be easy. i'll do it in the summer, i need to build 2 hull frames, a connecting piece anddd a mast and sail (tarp). mid august i hope. i have a 3 month summer :D

Yes but that normally implies that there is more than one kind of car in the field?

    Is A1GP a Formula? IRL?

I always assumed from your definition that a spec series is a subset of a Formula where the whole field used the same engine and Chassis...

Shouldn't a proper Formula contain more than one way to make a car to the specifications?

  • Jackie02/06/2009 at 21:55

    Impressive :D

  • me02/06/2009 at 21:55

well. we watched and enjoyed formula two at the weekend, and those cars were the same.

    i have a definition?

never really thought about it. formula one should, but only because if it didn't i would enjoy it less. what it's called doesn't really bother me.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 21:57

    8-)

  • Pat W02/06/2009 at 21:58

Shouldn't a proper Formula contain more than one way to make a car to the specifications?

That was the traditional meaning within motorsport. It changed the day the FIA made Formula 3000 a spec series, although they knew it would upset people so they dropped the world 'Formula' and called it the 'F3000 International Series'.

    I'm not here.

  • me02/06/2009 at 21:59

Yes but they didn't used to be, did they?

ummm, you got me. i have no idea?

  • Steven Roy02/06/2009 at 21:59

Ta .. I just wondered and it could have been interesting if FOTA decided to try it.

I don't think there is a mechanism for FOTA to do that. Alianora is the only person who would know how it could be done

  • Steven Roy02/06/2009 at 22:01

Yes but that normally implies that there is more than one kind of car in the field?

F2, FPA, F Vauxhall Lotus etc etc all spec series

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 22:01

ummm, you got me. i have no idea?

Yeah in the old days F2's were basically like F1 cars but smaller. You had March, Brabham, Lotus, etc and all the F1 drivers participated.

I'm not saying anything against SF or F2, I just think it's the wrong thing to call it from a traditional POV...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 22:02

  • Steven Roy02/06/2009 at 22:03

Yes but they didn't used to be, did they?

F2 used to be different but Allan McNish and Mika Hakkinen were racing Vauxhall-Opel Lotus 20 years ago with spec cars

  • Jon Waldock02/06/2009 at 22:03

OK ... but do you agree that they SHOULD be called Formula something?

to me, Formula means slicks and wings, although Formula Ford is an exception ot that rule

  • Nick02/06/2009 at 22:03

I think the word 'formula' has just been coerced to mean open wheel racing series ala F1.

Similar the way 'leauge' has been corupted in other sports like football and Rugby to refer to large competitions

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)02/06/2009 at 22:03

fair enough. i have no strong opinion ether way. certainly not enough to warrant caps any how :)

I guess it's partly because I think the whole SF series is just such a dumb idea marketed by dummies which makes me annoyed at the nomenclature...

No but i your football team is in action on the track whilst its the closed season on the pitch, you are ripe for being attracted to watch the show.

I'm amazed that i hadn't heard it was actually real until a week or 2 ago.

I'm just not sure that every really works. Bit like A1GP. For racing fans, do you really want some looser from your own country to win? When I went to see it, it was to watch Nico Hulkenbergering.

I'm just not sure that every really works. Bit like A1GP. For racing fans, do you really want some looser from your own country to win? When I went to see it, it was to watch Nico Hulkenbergering.

True, but i think the idea of these series (Especially SF in this respect) is to bring in sports fans who dont have sports to follow in the summer, who are loyal to an idea which can be easily recognised by them. Something that can differentiate them from F3, F2 e.t.c which they would never watch
