And there it was gone. The first day of the new month has passed us by already, and we are well on our way to the Turkish Grand Prix weekend. It was a much quieter news day yesterday, with the only revelations being teams not signing up for next year. Here are some of the things we're talking about instead:
- The Best of Sidepodpanel Series 2 was published yesterday, full of hilarious snippets from the six shows transmitted so far this year. You can also enjoy a compilation of Series 1 as well, which was published on Sunday, in case you missed it. I highly recommend them both, and if you fancy even more panelling, the links to the full shows are in the show notes of each.
- Gavin has finally launched his new blog. He's been talking about it for a while, dropping hints here and there, but now we can all catch up on the blog - Making Up the Numbers. So far I have only briefly perused it, but I've already seen a couple of interesting graphs, so it's definitely going to be one to keep an eye on.
- Finally, don't forget to make your vote count in the second, and last, semi-final of the 2009 Circuit Character Cup. This time we're pitting Suzuka against Monaco, and it's surprisingly closer than I thought at this early stage in proceedings. The poll closes at 9pm, and there'll be a 30 minute delay while we organise the final. By then we'll know who will face Spa in the final.
That's all for now. It's still rather hot in the UK, and opinions differ on whether this is bliss or a little on the oppressive side. Stick with Sidepodcast though, as we're always a blessed relief! I'll see you in the comments.
Psst.. Ubisoft E3 http://www.justin.tv/G4TV_E3
opening words really were "good evening fellow nerds"
Good morning from the iphone ;)
Good afternoon to the iPhone
Thanks for the plug Christine!
So I started the blog about three weeks ago and it has taken so long to launch properly!
I had so many things to do before I wanted to show it to you guys - collate the data, decide on a theme, decide on my approach... but by far the hardest thing was writing the post about the Brawns in Spain - because I found it difficult to prove or disprove any 'conspiracy' without making guesses or leaps of faith!
Anyway, I think I was successful and I hope you all enjoy it - I would love it if you provided me with ideas and feedback to improve the content ;)
Hello iPhone! ;)
*cough cough splutter sneeze*
Uuuurrgggh.
Morning. :(
Hayfever or Swine Flu?
This time of year would normally be heyfever...
But the other half has given me her cold.. so Bird Flu...
Hmmm...do I do some work and suffer?
Or... do I delegate it to my boss *it feels odd to say that* and spend the day watching Mel Brooks films?
Ooooh. Local Music festival has put up it's attendee list.
John Otway heads the bill on Saturday. :D NUTTER! :D
I've spent a little time going through McLarens cars over the last few years and comparing their performance on track to see how bad this years car is.
Even with the dreadful MP4/19 in the mix, this years car is possibly the worst they have produced since 1995 with the MP4/10 - The initial McLaren Mercedes with the chocolate engine.
They even produced 3 different versions of that car - the B *or bulbous* spec so Mansell could fit in it and the C spec.
33 starts - 18 finishes. Best result of 2nd twice in the year. 30 points overall and 4 in the constructors championship
If it's not that one, then you may well have to go back to 1980...
This is how bad a year McLaren are having.
And yet all the talk is on Ferrari's bad start to the year.
Is that because we expect Mclaren to recover and Ferrari to just disintegrate?
Looks like Ferrari has recovered form to me. I'm very interested to see how they go in Turkey
Ferrari were expected to be at the head of the field - testing away from everyone else hid their performance. McLaren testing with everyone else showed their issues and were expected to struggle so it's no real surprise.
The biggest issue with Ferrari is most of their failures this year have been very much public. Raikkonen's cockpit filled with smoke springs to mind... Add to that the appearance that Ferrari is going back to the 80's in their organisation and it makes a good story.
McLaren are making steps forward - but so is everyone else. McLaren either needs a massive step forward - half a second in reality, or to ditch this years car and work on the 2010 car.
PS. Where is everyone? I've caught up with all of yesterday and todays comments!
Morning guys :)
For me as a McLaren fan 2006 felt worse than this year. Even though we got 9 podiums, it was a hard year because we should have been winning. This year I knew we wouldn't win from day one, and somehow it seems a little easier to swallow.
I can'T speak for everyone but we've got a mega long weekend - monday (local holiday not sure why) and tuesday (anniversary for italian republic) so to celebrate I'm at work for 30 minutes to check emails and line up conversations about future job (Boston) and then head home to work there instead.
It is too hot to type.
Sun hasnt came to my side of theoffice... yet
my 13 degree atmosphere is jealous of this comment
No Idea.
2006 was somewhat of a disapointment - but the car wasn't overly quick at the start of the year. It did mature towards the end of the year and put in some excellent performances - but they were unlucky not to win races. Particularly Australia.
It was too hot to sleep with the window closed, and the birds were too noisy to sleep with the window open, which basically meant no sleep. You'd love it.
:D
This is the thing about the UK, it's either too cold so we all wish it were warmer, or it's too hot so we all wish it were cooler :D
6:30 at night and approx 17 degrees in Sydney. Perfect!
We are rarely happy with the climate, it's true.
Bedroom in flat currently at 28°C
My playroom - 20°C Aircon is on very low.
I had 30 degrees over the weekend - we needed a fan on at night to survive. Luckily I can sleep through anything so I'm well rested...
opening words really were “good evening fellow nerds” {Comment #1}
Now that's cool!
I'm OK with the weather - my brain was just whirring so much after attempting to sort out a friend's computer last night (a friend that, like lou, has history tomorrow, but isn't anywhere near as comfy with computers) that it took until gone 1am to feel tired enough to get any sleep!
Lee McK ready to go off on an adventure:
About to go round old Nurburgring with Timo Glock. One lap, 20k! He suggested i have a drink before i get in the car! Oh goodness!
That really is. My Bedside clock told me it was 26 degrees yesterday - at 11.30pm :P
You've hit the nail on the head there!
Have started playing the new Virtua Tennis 2009 game, and my coach in the career mode is Tim Henman...
I'm doooooooomed!
is it good? I've been playing Virtua Tennis 3 all evening :D
It's great! It's not a huge departure from the previous games but it's new tennis which is always good :P
Career mode will suck me in though.... it always does.
i play it hardcore then i forget about it for months, then try pick it up again but have forgotten all the controls and can no longer win any games :(
So you gonna start off well and then choke before the semis? ;)
Sounds about right :D
Although it just gave me an achievement for hitting a line judge. I like this game.
rafa says shhhhh
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/ohrafa-gif
Hey guys, just commenting from the iPhone on my lunch break. How goes it?:)
Have you got an iPhone? I never would have guessed :P
You know that you have to Live Comment your lunch now, don't you? ;)
Very quiet.
I spent some of this morning looking at McLaren and deciding that it's their worst season in either 14 or 29 years.
He's allowed - he's not British and he wins occasionally!
good afternoon all, how is everyone today?
Afternoon :D
I have just placed my now standard "Rubens for the win" bet. He's only paying $9 this week.
I support this bet
i really want him to win this weekend :)
I decided not to place the "Heikki for the points" bet. I think this says how I think the weekend will go.
I was surprised when I looked at the data from Spain how much Rubens dropped off in his third stint. If Jenson is anywhere near him he's going to have to make a Herculean effort to beat him!
Just just left a bit of feedback for sunday, I can't remember if I said my name on the voicemail... just wanted to make sure in case you guys got it and I forgot the most important part; who it was.
Really need to buy socks with my name to help me remember... ;)
surely the Brawns are overdue for a retirement ;)
Most likely that will Rubens, knowing his luck :(
it tends to happen to the people I support. I'm far more worried about Roger this week than is probably healthy.
Woohoo! Thanks lukeh. Good job you said or we might have confused you with that Legard guy that sometimes calls in.
If it's any consolation, he just destroyed me on virtua tennis.
Yeah what's with that guy? psh.
:P
I play as him :D. I was playing doubles with Nadal as my partner. We were unstoppable muhaha.
Nothing beats Wii Tennis. Nothing!
How long do the podcasts normally take to appear on iTunes?
Debrief appeared early this morning...
I can use my sixaxis as my racquet. It's just like the Wii!
Or not. Heh.
Hmm not for me, at least not from the iPhone
The show is in the feed, so should update almost straight away. If you're looking on the iTunes store, it could take a few hours.
:o nooo they will be like Nick Heidfeld last year and not retire for ages!
This is why Rubens is growing a beard! He's unlocked the secret of no retirement :o
Ok I will try again later. Might take a while to get to our ituenes. I need something to listen to on the way to work tomorrow!
FYI I sync'd my iPod at 4:45GMT this morning and it magically appeared. It wasn't there at midnight!
that would be a good theory if Jenson hadn't retired a few times last year :P
You're further round the world so it takes longer? ;)
But do you call THAT a beard?
...this is a very good point. Bah! :P
Longer for all those words to travel
ooh Safina just lost a set and Soderling just won one. 2009 French Open clearly is being held in Oppositeland.
I guess if it is good enough for F1...?
must be a good year for it.
Blue Orange Lion got his question to Piquet read out on the Renault F1 podcast!
Silly Holly (who can't seem to pronounce any foreign sounding name) didn't pick up on the connection with his name and the team!
chop chop Safina, I am staying up to watch Andy Murray and it's getting late.
What time is it with you now?
What was the question?
11.43pm
You are certainly dedicated.
I dislike Andy Murray that much.
Q: What made Portimao such a special track and would you like to see a Grand Prix there?
A: He considered it special and a favourite and would love to have a GP there...
Good job we like you a lot!
If he gets through this, doesn't he have to face the one who knocked out Nadal though? If so, he's got no chance!
Andy Murray comes across to me as the Lewis Hamilton of Tennis...
And the one who knocked out Nadal is on fire today! I reeeeally don't want Andy in the finals because he might trouble Roger, if Roger gets that far.
Oh BTW Piquet never had to pass his driving test... figures!
He's sooo boring when he talks - him and Rosberg are the boring brothers of F1!
haha I was just going to say that I think the reason I dislike him is Lewis Hamilton syndrome. And just like Lewis, it's really no fault of his own that the media herald him as THE SECOND COMING OF OUR SAVIOUR. It drives me crazy to go to the BBC tennis news page and see 6 stories about Murray and 1 story covering the other 131 players at the tournament.
Plus he's got offside with remarks that he's made...
What is it about British Sportspeople that when a good one finally comes along after years of misery all people do is cut them down?
Who's Sir Rog up against next? Is it tricky?
Ain't that the truth. Call me when you win a slam, Andy.
I'm not British so I can't claim tall poppy syndrome :D
next is Gael Monfils who will have the French crowd behind him. Monfils has been playing pretty well but their head to head is something like 13 games, of which Rog has won 12. It should be easy, but thats what they said about Haas, Mathieu and Acasuso and all of those games almost killed me.
Understood. One of those "on paper, it should be a breeze" games.
I am going to have to find a way of keeping track of it all when Wimbledon gets here.
Wimbledon is my favourite slam. And everyone elses by the sounds of it, one of my friends in London was trying to get tickets and it sounded like a massive hassle and she missed out in the end. For the Australian Open this year tickets for all the games were still on sale on the day of the game.
It is supremely popular. You put your name in the ballot to be selected for tickets, but it can take a few years before you get selected. Otherwise, you join the enormous queues for grounds admission and hope for the best.
I don't think it's that - perhaps because of a drought we over-indulge and over-expose the new stars to the point where people get sick of them.
I guess another example is Susan Boyle - although it happened VERY quickly for her :(
Wow, epic.
I bought my semi final ticket super early because I had no idea they don't sell out here. I had no idea who I would actually be seeing so I was glad it ended up being Federer v Roddick. Next year I might wait for draws to be released and then buy tickets. There is about 10 other players I want to see "in the flesh"
Australia has a girl in the quarter finals for the first time in 21 years, yet I haven't seen her name in the news at all. It makes a nice change from SHE IS AUSTRALIAN AND THUS SHE IS CLEARLY THE FAVOURITE (which they still do to Mark Webber of course)
Australians are yet to realise there is someone other than Jelena Dokic in the womens sport.
NELSON IS BORING ME TO TEARS!!! :(
Stop listening?
Yay, hope for me on the 18th! :P
I bet you're really looking forward to the feature of Lee at his house on this weekends coverage then ;)
i didn't bother listening to that one yesterday, i was having problems enough staying awake as it was.
Or hope for a lot of rain and a peoples Sunday
Or even better - a people Monday for the Mens singles final - like in 2001
My boss has only been to Wimbledon once, despite being a huge tennis fan. Lugky git managed to get to see the 2001 mens final. I had to watch it on TV. Awsome match.
I had to make it to the end... I'm the same with movies. I've only ever stopped watching a movie early three times.
I guess what I mean is, normally the Renault podcast is really interesting and insightful and I was looking forward to this one as I don't know much about Nelsinho.
But considering his dad was a real playboy, his son is quite dull in comparison :(
Ah, I used to be like that. Now my time is too precious :)
There is not nearly enough Pat Symonds in this year's podcasts. :(
Time to get the red button on me thinks.
Rumour around RG is Gonzalez is injured. Nooooooo
Commentator said "I'm talking complete rubbish here, I do apologise"
I mentally file this in "things Legard should say more often"
I knew RG was up to so... oh Roland Garros. ohhhhhhhh.
Just a quick question, if you're worried Murray could be a threat to Sir Rog, then surely whoever beats him would be even more so?
First game to Gonzo, hooray! Normally I dislike him because he grunts too much. But I can mute him. I can't mute that Murray's face.
this is true. But if someone is to beat Roger, I'd prefer it to be anyone but Andy :D
Hehe, got ya :)
pleasepleaseplease become a tennis commentator :D
I just realised I do not have enough internet to get me through to practice/qualy this weekend. Panic stations. Time to listen to tennis and not watch.
Cor, and there's me thinking it's hot here. Those two idiots are out in the mid-day sun playing tennis! :)
theres something to be said about playing winter sports. Although I always hated dragging myself out of bed on cold Saturday mornings for netball when I was 13. Theres a reason I watch sports and don't play them.
Um, Amy... this game might go on for a while!
but playing tennis in the sun is fun!.. well playing a friendly game in the sun is anyways.... i can't imagine it's much fun for them though.
Match, I mean. Sorry.
Another reason to dislike Murray. He doesn't want me to sleep.
Yeah casual tennis in the sun is great! I think just winning just game would probably make me run for the nearest freezer to sit in if I was playing competitive though :P
Hehehe.
He also seems to have made Forehando change from his pretty black outfit he has worn all tournament. This isn't a team sport, I'm sure it doesn't matter if they dress the same.
oh. :( i've just realised i'm at school when wimbeldon is on this year, which means i can't do what i did last year and watch as many matches as i could :(
I feel your pain, Lou. I used to take the second week off, but can no longer do so.
they always deliberately have the Australian Open when the school holidays are on, which sucks because I have to work and I get jealous of all the school kids who get to go every day. Stupid full time life.
oooh yes, you go back down you. during wimbledon i shall be in a primary school with kajillions of (shock horror) primary school kids!
How are we all today?
:(... also i may not be able to see the finals either if i'm at goodwood as i believe the last day is the sunday of goodwood..
Also true. The sporting schedule is all messed up this year.
Hey Jon,
i go back next tuesday, the day after my last exam *sob*
i'm collapsed on the sofa after having had 4 hours sleep in the last 2 days, Dad keeps walking past saying i look pale and should go out in the sun for a bit, but i want to watch the tennis. otherwise i'm good :D
had a good day?
i finish 2 weeks today :D foreeevverrrr (insert evil laugh here)
does this mean you're turning into a British version of Amy?
yeah, it's been ok thanks. our technology class had a huuuuuge argument with our teacher over which syllabus we're doing (a week from the exam) and it turned out we're right, which made me feel good because he kept bad mouthing me saying that i was wrong and that i don't know what i'm talking about. went for a bike ride after which calmed me down a bit, but didn't notice the nettle branch sticking out so my hand is a bit swollen. other than that....im alright thanks
ASSIMILIATION SUCCESS.
:D
and from quite far away too
i was kinda for the last two days, although i'm now reverting back to getting more sleep than that. I don't know how Amy survives on such little sleep.
our latin teacher tought us the previous years syllabus for the comprehension paper last year, we only found out in the exam. not a nice feeling. sorry to hear about your hand though.
I slept through dinner yesterday :(
My God, they forgot to turn the aircon on my train so it's as hot as heck in here :(
:(
I forsee a week of early nights in between RG and Wimbledon. I may have to foresake Queens for my health :D
it seems to be more and more common, and it's really not accetable. at my last school a teacher left following not teaching us any of the syllabus (ironically it was technology again there too) and it's happened at the same school with a differnet teacher but in A-Level this time. it's just very frustrating more than anything.
my hand'll be fine, just a bit puffy, it's going down a bit which is nice
Speaking of RG, hi all. How are you all going, I see a lot of :( so I take it not well?
i take it that RG isn't the person who comments on here?
haha, speak of the devil! (but a nice version)
well thank you. how are you?
No, it confuses me, a lot. Means Roland Garros.
Hi Roland! ;)
Whats that? Tennis i presume?
Fine, tired but fine.
Hey. When's Murray on?
Nowww.
Just gone 1 set down,
right now
Damn, need to turn over from the cricket then.
Good afternoon folks
[and a general 'hello' to our international friends :D ]
Hello.
even....er...nigh...er....morning!
:D
Am buying a new car (well, new to me anyway)
Am still amazed that the banking system takes up to 5 days to transfer money! Do they do it in a suitcase, what happened to the digital age? ;)
See, i'm laying on my bed watching the tennis. But I have a horrible tendency to just drift off to sleep when im laying down watching things, bah, so I keep missing things because im drifting off!
Then sit up ;)
But its soo comfy!
Works for me, I struggle when laying on the couch in front of the box. Especially on a warm day like today
*mental note*
When buying a new graphics card - ensure it's not a 3 slot solution as you then have to spent an hour locating new SATA cables with right angle connectors so you can get them in behind the graphics card cooler...
*sigh*
Some banks will do it instantly...
If you pay a charge. *groan*
Even though it does transfer instantly anyway, they just keep it for a few days to make some money from it.
If Andy goes one round further than Roger in this slam, he becomes world #2.
No. Just No.
They were quite happy to offer me a courier for the forms to sign though - and relieve me of Fifty quid for the pleasure too. I said 1st class should suffice!
He will? Yaaay. Go Murray.
I have a fishy feeling Murray's going home today.
NO. ROGER MUST BE 1 OR 2 UNTIL HE RETIRES.
Or even 1st class recorded or special delivery at a push.
It'll still arrive tomorrow and will cost a couple of quid maximum.
What are you getting?
Audi A3
http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/henry-the-hoover/index.html?utm_campaign=01June09cool&utm_source=01June09cool&utm_medium=email
You all need this in your life
Trading in my battered old A4, 1st saloon for me. Going back to hatches again
Heh, that actually could be so useful!
:D
I like the A3. The 1.8T is a particular favourite. Easy to get towards silly power from them.
Ha ha, my mate used to have a full sized 'Henry'
A desk one seems ideal, Lukeh should get one for the toast crumbs :)
I'm going to the dark side with a Diesel but it does have 140bhp and buckets of torque
:(
Diseaseal
Yeah, I know. I do a lot of miles and it makes sense
I worked out that I'd need to do 30'000 miles a year for a diseaseal to make sense for me.
Purely through higher cost of car, cost of servicing and cost of fuel... So far this year I've done less than 1500 miles.
Anyone seen this?
http://btcc.net/html/generalnews_detail.php?id=1489
Quite major changes, could work...could not
Releasing the tech regs over a year in advance? Whose stupid idea is that?
You don't want the teams knowing what they'll have to be designing that early - they may actually have time to develop it properly and not work 24x7!
Never happen in F1.. ;)
hehehehe
Afternoon all. Managed to find a decient feed for the Nintendo E3 conference. If we're lucky, they might do a piece on the F1 game.
That's what I'm hoping for :D
It's an interesting set of regs.
Major amount of standard components - but they are things you don't see - sub frames, suspension and brakes.
Cheap engines for privateers if they want them
Sounds good to me. Maybe someone should sent Max and the FOTA a copy of them?
Also, Nintendo are very good at keeping their things secret until they are close to release. I remember them announcing the sd card update at a conference, which was available to download ten mins later! Therefore, I'm hoping for a suprise again.
Last year's conference they spent 2 hours talking about how rich their are, how much money they have from the Wii and how a woman broke her ankle snowboarding so the Wii is safer because of that. So this years can only be more better tbh. when do do surprises though, they do tend to be good, so here's hoping too.
They're getting rid of BMW's which is a shame, but could make for better racing. As long as they're all not the same shape i'll be happy
Don't remind me! Nearly as bad as Sony 2006
RIIIIDGE RRRACER!

March back into F1?
It was mentioned yesterday - and I'm still suspicious of it.
ENJOY YOUR BAGEL, ANDY?
You're mean. Hehehe. :P
I'll get my karma. I think it's called Heikki.
Am i missing something?
But Heikki's already faring poorly. Can't get much worse than it is now...
I've been mean to Andy for a couple of years now ;)
In tennis if you lose a set 6-0 it is known as a bagel. Worst possible score.
Ahh righttt
and 6-1 is a breadstick. Mmm baking goods.
Someone who's a baking obsessive made these up didnt they?
I think Federer should be more worried about Soderling or Monfils than Murray right now...
I hate that there is still a quarter and a semi to get through before even thinking about a final. I have had enough stress already, it feels like far more than 4 rounds worth!
You do know that Federer is not Finnish?
Just on the bus back into the city to catch my train home. Please post anything of interest from the E3 press conferences if you can :)
I love the Onion
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/professional_racing_drivers?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Swissish?
Also, I tried to support Jarkko Nieminen but he never gets very far in tournaments :D
Games Announced: New Super Mario Brithers Wii (4 player simultaniously)
Wii Fit Plus
Just talking about Wii motion plus now.
Another Mario Bro's game... again.... again... and Wii Fit Plus. That looks exactly the same and doesn't even seem to add anything useful that you don't need with Wii Fit.
*yawns*
What are you going to do if he is up against a Finn?
Jarkko isn't all that good
Roger must win always. He is the Finnception.
Things you learn listening to podcasts. If you take all the virus particles from all the oceans of the world and lined them up end to end they would stretch for 200 light years.
Evening all, fun day?
You can never have too much sunshine...
If Flibster's around,.I tried that driver (cleaning out the previous one prior to installing the one Flibster linked) and it's not really done much. The colour is normal now, but the screen is still lobsided and.....not right. The driver I instaleld is actually older than the one that came on the computer, but I doubt re-installing would make a big difference. I am of course hoping this can be sorted without buying a new monitor, but I doubt it.
The problem started when I was putting GP2 into full-screen, and since then, it's not been right. Can you even buy bulky desktop monitors easily anymore? There's none in my Argos catalogue anyway.
Hello there peeps!
Does anyone know why nintendo hate computer games?
come on Gonzo! Almost there!
Because they don't make them anymore.
and done. ;)
Sounds like the monitor has gone.
You can't really. TFT's have taken over. The only CRT's that are commonly available are massively expensive as they are professional monitors.
TFT's do start from reasonably low though. 19" Widescreen monitors are from about £80
YAY NOW I CAN SLEEP. BYE ANDY.
aww, poor Murray.
I am going to disappear into the sunshine for a while with Motor Sport. The cover has Jim Clark and a piece on McNish and another on the Festival of Speed. What more could you ask for?
Doesn't mean they have to destroy it for everyone else. They should be banned from E3 and stuck in a room full of tamagotchi
Murray's out. Guess that proves the whole wearing black on a really hot day thing...
looks like you're not assimilated completely, after all. :P
night, amy.
You are evil
I can see him winning Wimbledon now, just to spite you... :P
NUH UH. Roger needs his 14. Then his 15. Then Andy can do what he wants :D
Why don't people say that any more, just realised I've been missing it...
RG's RG Predos: Federer to lose in final to Soderling
Amy to lose $10 on sports again.
You should try KENO
I'm tempted to throw my wii out of the window, anyone who wants one please come and catch...
why?
Maybe if we throw ours together at each other, ther will be a big smash
They just revealed possibly the most stupid thing ever. Im not even going to Describe it , its that bad.
There is a new mario galaxy coming out though so it can stay by the TV... for now.
Agreed.
So stupid even Max wouldn't think of that.
About the same sort of level as adding sails and oars to f1 cars
but you don't need to buy it or upgrade or whatever....
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4292/dsc00409.jpg
That pretty much shows the extent of my monitor's unhelpfulness.
Oh my god!
Super Mario Brothers Wii!
:D
No... but if it gets anywhere near me i will destroy it
Metroid Wii as well! :D
You can see it, although ill warn everyone that clicking this might make you dumber http://gizmodo.com/5275846/wii-vitality-sensor-turns-wii-into-the-definitive-nursing-home-console
I just don't get what on earth the point of it is, it's a games console, not a heart machine. Wii Fit already has you running along and doing your stuff, surely with a big hospital-type clip on like that it's just a nuisance... I dunno. I don't understand it at all. I'm happy enough doing jogging or yoga or whatever on Wi fit without extra things like that. Like lou says, people don't need to buy it though.
I dont mind all this casual stuff, i dont use or need most of it. But these are functional products on the most part, not games. I just dont understand why they bring this stuff to E3, its a games conference. people don't show tv episodes at Cannes.
What that finger thing is, i don't know. maybe you have to keep your heart rate below a certain level during a horror game or something.
I know I shouldn't be feeding the habit but this did make me laugh
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/it-wasn-t-me-jpg
awww :D
poor panda!
Haha, they need to make all panda's stay at that size
i'm not sure that would please mr c...
Going to see zoo would be like walking through a panda argos catalogue
"Oooh, I want that one! And that one! I must have him! Ahh look at her!"
i'm like that when i go to the zoo anyways :P i have to settle for the photos instead lol
Back home now. Rather nice weather at this time of the day :)
Is Sony's press conference at 8pm our time?
It should be at 7 so get ready!
7pm, on in a second :)
Sweet :D
Evenings are going by way too quickly.
I was doing college stuff last night. Had the window closed because my landlord sleeps a couple of rooms down and I wanted to keep the noise down.
Like a sauna it was..
You need half a can of air!
That was nice of my workplace. They phoned up saying they're v. short staffed tomorrow, and I said I'd work as I could do with a bit of money going into next week too but I have a driving lesson in the middle of the day expecting my boss to sigh and moan at me, but his response was "Do you want a 2 hour lunch tomorrow instead of 1 then to make sure you get it sorted?"... I was kinda taken back when he asked that, obvious answer much :P
Sony are late...
Nintendo overran so they are giving people time to cross town apparently
Wonder if Sony will give a F109 preview on the PSP?
They'll definitely talk about the PSP because there's a new PSP coming out but sadly I can't see F109 getting coverage.
Codemasters are at the show though at their own part of the entire show itself, so we should get some information this week :)
Yeah, saw it, impractical for everyone who has tons of umd's though. Ie, me.
Here we go!
Apparently they will have in store machines which upload them to digital storage for you
By "all people" I assume you really mean "all people who are sports reporters for tabloid newspapers"
This lag on the stream is really ticking me off...
What are ya using?
Justin.tv.
http://e3.gamespot.com/press-conference/sony-e3/
A lot better
I was just about to post that ;)
A PS2 for some 50 quid? Bargain.
How is that even possible? SLEEP
In other words - the machines will have the digital images ready to go and they will just ream the UMD's to make sure you own the game.
Wow, intense.
AAarrgh... Henry is NOT a Hoover!!!
Is it me or does it all look a bit Gears of War?
lord knows if this has already been posted, but martin haven blogged about the return of f2.
must dash now.
How did you get this to work?
Except this is awesome. ;)
The cover system's the same and the camera angles are the same!
HOW MANY GODDAMN PLAYERS IS THAT?!
Martin Haven Rocks.
That is all.
Martin Haven has a blog? Fantastic!
The internet is rubbish, bring back TV :(
ps. enjoying all the e3 updates, but if you think of it, can ya add some context please?
reading back without any idea what you've all seen is exciting but hard to follow. cheers.
He was the one that did the F2 commentary wasn't it?
and he tweets:
http://twitter.com/MartinHaven/
really must be going.
Yep
Sure thing - just been watching Unchartered 2 gameplay, and now looking at a game called Mag which I think, believe it or not, can support up to 256 players online!
I should stop watching as it isn't helping me at all, i want an Xbox and a PS3 now.
I mean like all the good stuff thats coming out.
perfect. will catch up laterz.
And the one with the FANTASTIC Safety Car rant on Midweek Motorsport the other week!
Now moving onto PSP.
Followed him after seeing his name following Toby Moody (who did MotoGP commentary for Eurosport). If you like WTCC and the various junior series Martin covers, you should follow him, and also if you like gardening...
I'm waiting for food to cook and then I'm going too.
PSP Go time me thinks, although he's already had a joke about how everyone seems to already know about it :D
I'm looking forward to hearing that! I'm keeping up (well, sort of) with SPC but MWM is on complete hold because their shows are so long. Will catch up when I have more free time.
Can't wait for the Rockband Unplugged coming out next week, looks bloomin awesome.
Oh goodness, it's that Kaz bloke uh-gain...
I swear by Henrys. Not just because my Dad is a manager at Numatic.
All is forgiven, internets you can stay.
PSP go is smaller than i thought
$599 US Dollars...
Classic times :D
It won't replace the UMD. GET IN. YAAAAAY
I won't spoil it. Needless to say it's a good one though!
I still want that though, sounds awesome. Built in wifi, more memoery *faints*
It needs GT. I bought a psp years ago mainly to play a game that hasnt come out yet... Hopefully they will show it. Pretty please!
They kinda accidentally revealed GT would be coming to the PSP this year.
I have a 19" one you can have. Where are you?
It was the first title they pretty much announced on the PSP, where is it! Been so many years :D
I think it'll be shown off toay though, you are probably right.
I may have to buy that and add it to the pile of Stuff I Have To Read.
OMG OMG OMG OMG! :D It's Kaz Yamauchi! :D
Speaking of good timing :D I'm extatic now.
Oh yeah! :D
Father of GT has arrived!
And this is somehow a bad thing? You do realise the health profession uses the Wii as part of a fitness regime for the elderly, using the balance board? This is an excellent idea.
800 cars for Gran Turismo PSP? Wooooooooow.
Wooooooooo! :D
Gran tourismo has 800 cars, 35 tracks with 60 different layouts
I've fainted, got back up, and fainted again
GT on PSP is all good, but we want to know about the big one! Talk about GT5, Kaz! :D
Hey, its the PSP's big moment here. The big PS3 one is later I'm sure, don't think its the last of him on the Sony Stage.
Cool, GT PSP vid!
ENZO! OMFG! :D
wow, october 1st? looks like it's a simultaneous with the PSP Go.
ENZO!
yay, Hideo Kojima! :)
I want it now. Now, Sony, now.
According to Hideo Kojima the PSP GO! has cooling issues
ENZO! :D
heehee, I loves me my Metal gear :D:D:D
Man that looks incredible. That makes me want to buy a PSP, Metal Gear Solid is just.... immense. I only completeled No. 4 a few weeks ago and I have withdrawal! :P
PSP is getting skype!
I like how when they mention hannah montana, the crowd cheer, it's very funny. :P
It already has it.
I think I am going to end up bankrupt, soooo many good games.
it's amazing how little sleep you can live with when you have a deadline.. i've kinda woken up now though, but i'm going to try and get an early night tonight i think...
Are you trying to do an impression of Amy?
Don't blame you after the past few days :)
Depends how urgent the deadline is! I had one the other week but since it could be 'persuaded' I got away with another week added. Can't do that with exams though.
How did History go?
not intentionally. but i couldn't keep it up every day. i've been in a bit of a daze all day
well lets not duel on the subject but how do i say it... i'm looking forward to retaking it at christmas.
Ah. Okay. Better luck then, then.. But you never know. Might have got a reasonable result.
if i manage to do better in the second paper next week then maybe...
Aww, thats a shame. Got a History mock coming up soon myself.
The trouble is by Xmas there will be 6 months more history to learn
er... i'll be retaking the AS paper i should imagine, the A2 course shouldn't be affected.
Looks like Sony are stepping into the world of the Wii, that was very very very similar to everything the Wii does. Just more fancy.
And a snowball.
Looks pretty cool though.
Very strange controller, not sure its as good as natal, defiantly different, sort of a cross between the wii and natal
Microsoft's search thing in now live
http://www.bing.com/
McNish on Midweek Motorsport tomorrow night
I searched for chandler, it didn't get the irony
Currently laughing at awkwardfamilyphotos.com
This is my favourite so far
:D
According to a tweet by James Allen
I was just about to say this, very random...
:D
Oh for Pete's sake.
I am entering Vanwall into the 2010 championship. So There.
Surely they have missed the deadline
I think we should plant a story that if FOTA's entries are disallowed then sidepodcast will enter as Ferrari
Don't like MS stuff - try and avoid any product/service that uses it. For me Vista did it - complete rubbish.
Go for it - complete with Sidepodcast sponsorship painted in British Racing Green.
Gran Turismo 5 on the E3 conference!
Vista is a complete disaster
Then I will enter BRM!
WRC, NASCAR, looking good
GT5 has the NASCAR and WRC licenses, awesome!
'twas very random - my mind was actually on a Linux install - found a great distro called LinuxMint - fantastic operating system - everything like codecs work out of the box!
WRC and NASCAR licences.
No date... runs into wall repeatedly
Lukeh,
What tour venues are Muse playing in Scandinavia?
That was my experience - if you just want a PC does office stuff and play videos and songs try http://www.linuxmint.com/ - fantastic Linux distro!
All the dates and venues are here
Well if you want to see them in Copenhagen, you are most welcome to crash at my house - I live an hour and a half's train ride from the venue...
They picked Sheffield? Over any where in the North East? Not a Muse fan, but no where in the North East at all?
Nowhere in the west country at all as well but I promised myself not to go on about it anymore, wrote up a big blog entry about it all.
Oh yeah, got tickets for Terminator Salvation on Friday! w00t!
We don't have big events in the Westcountry, except Glasto. That's why we all go to Cardiff. To be fair to them though, they can't go everywhere. That it is billed as a 'World Tour' not a 'European Tour' does bode well for future dates though, it sounds like America/Asia will be added later, and that can mean more UK/Euro dates are added later.
I may be seeing it Friday. Was meant to go to Star Trek but my mate is a bloody idiot.
As far as I see if, if it's a World Tour, go around the world. If it's a European Tour, go around Europe. I appreciate they can't go everywhere because a lot ofmpeople around Europe will miss out, but it's not like cardiff is a minor city or anything, especiaqlly for such a small World Tour if that's their correct wording. It';s just surprised me so much I suppose.
We'll see. I'd expect some worldwide dates later, and "due to unprecedented demand here are some more UK dates". Not that I want to get your hopes up unrealistically.
Right, back to work.
Just listening to Panel 5 from Season 1 with the Top Gear impressions. Love Ollie's :D
"Here we have the new chrome monster from McLaren, it's so shiny I can even see my own face"
Kudos to Mrs C for making those recaps, they're both fantastically editied and very very funny of course with everyone who is in them :)
Got me thinking - we need a live PodPanel for the next SPC meetup.
Yes, I'll take the blame for this one if it all goes wrong (if it goes ahead) :D
Defo. Did love Episode 2 though (what do you mean bias?). And the cheating by Mr C in the last round. :)
That was suggested for the podpicinic, but I think it ended up as a chat as it was simply easier to do.
It wasn't cheating, it was genius ;)
Ah right, cool.
at goodwood?
Clever thinking, but cheating nonetheless ;)
Heh, that would be awesome :)
Although I dunno the amoubt of people going..
it wasn't cheating, it was genius.
as you were.
I was thinking more the Lotus thing. But a Goodwood special would be cool.
exactly.
See, we both understand the definition of genius :D
For all those loving Forza 3:
http://www.virtualr.net/forza-motorsport-3-gameplay-video/
well you said the next meet up :P
Goodly evening
Hey Jackie, how goes it? :)
I'm very well Scott thank you .. and how are you?
Im still in shock that GT5 has licences, if only sony had had the f1 licence for another year, we could have had the ultimate driving game. As it stands, its awesome though
I'm doing just fine thanks :)
Wait, GT5 has licences?! Just read WRC AND NASCAR! Is this true?!
Yep. Didnt you see the GT5 video?
Can't believe Monaco beat Suzuka
Can't believe that Spa didn't make the final
No I missed it. So it was actually in the Sony press conference?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/aww-jpg
awww :)
yep. Towards the end they showed video of GT5 but still no date.
Yes! and GT PSP confirmed for october with 800 cars and 35 tracks
I saw the GT PSP bit. Enzo! :D
Was there any good info on GT5 itself?
saw some new tracks, the licences, LMS cars and not sure if it will be part of the game but city scenes with dynamic surrounds
Ooh new tracks, do tell!
You can tell I'm into GT once again :D
It did
So it's Monaco v Spa, eh? Interesting.
Is it me or has time flown by since Monaco?
Catalunya till Monaco seemed AGES. But it feels like Monaco was just the other yet yet it was well over a week ago to me.
They weren't ones from prologue, but i was too exited about the NASCAR and WRC logos jumping on screen to notice exactly what they were :D
I...I...I.........I...

The next 12 months is just gonna be one massive racing game war between GT5, FM3, NFS Shift and DiRT 2, not forgetting rFactor 2 for PC.
I love how far we've come in technology. Means we can make games as stunning as these. :D
OMG! I think I just saw Indianapolis in one screenshot!
I thought MS were being a bit hasty calling it the definitive racing game of the generation, wouldn't be too surprised to see GRID 2 in about a year too.
And of course there's F1 2010 ;)
So let's just recap:
GT5, Forza Motorsport 3, NFSs Shift, Nitro and World Online, DiRT 2, F1 2010, Blur (PGR/Midnight Club meets Facebook), maybe GRiD 2 and rFactor 2.
Yep, I think that's me set for the next 12 months :D
And for the PSP
GT PSP, DiRT 2, F12009, NFS Shift, Motorstorm : Arctic something and I think there was something else.
It's a great time to be a sim racer :D
I seriously need to find this GT5 video. The screenshots look amazing, but it doesn't compare to moving pictures :D
I think we scared everyone away with the awesomeness Geekout...
bad quality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZQAvtt0j0k
Only one of those is a true sim though
*sits in stunned silence with jaw to the floor*
Some scenes took 3 or 4 watches to work out it wasn't real video, esp Loeb's car rolling up the ramp
R10! Indy! NASCAR! WRC! DAMAGE! ENZO!
It's just all too much!
I don't like the idea of Sony having the monopoly on all of those licences though
I think they are open licences, i doubt they would pay for exclusivity for something then bundle it in GT when they could sell it to people on its own.
EA has a nascar game, and i believe DIRT has full WRC licences
Perfect example is Ferrari. They were once exclusive to EA only and now look. They've been in PGR, Forza and now GT.
Not to mention the Ferrari Challenge games.
True :P
Hehe, don't worry it was the last e3 presser, normality may return!
Come back! I have digestives, marshmellows, suasage rolls, cups of tea and coffee for everyone!
I can't cope with all the games chat, sorry .. but you guys seem to be having fun so I'll leave you to it :)
But it was the most awesome one!
Sony and PD are sly devils I tell ya. All along they said "GT won't be at E3 so don't ask us questions about it" but then BAM! Hits us right when we really didn't expect it! Already I'm saying - GT5 > FM3.
don't worry jackie i haven't got a clue about what they are saying either :D
It's too much for me too :(
Just watch the video and keep telling yourself that this is a game, it isnt real...
Wait till I get technical about football ;)
:D
Haha it must be a guy thing.
I agree... Any Brabham fans out there?>
Oh god *runs and hides*
Me neither
Which won't be today since I'm gannin te bed. ciao
football? what is this motorsport you speak of? :P
Superleague Formula. ;)
Yep. Denny Hulme FTW!
a question for Steven about F1.
Has anyone from the governing body ever been charged with article151c .. cause I reckon that Max is skating close to the wire with the FIA/FOTA crisis
IT'S NOT A BLOODY FORMULA WHEN ALL THE CARS ARE THE SAME! IT'S AN EFFING SPEC SERIES! :(
Good night RG :D see you for Journeyer's quiz tomorrow.
night R.G
Is that a lost reference :P
Night RG... we haven't even started on the high end 'create your own' karting game... *ducks*
Oi watch it fella!
quackers!
No chance. They all run their organisations in such a way that no-one dare challenge them
A lot of spec series are called Formula
Lost on some folk
So... Scaeletrix.
:P
Ta .. I just wondered and it could have been interesting if FOTA decided to try it.
Just reminded me i need to move to an open plan apartment and buy up a couple of hundred yards of track!
a quick google for "formula" returns:
A set of specifications, including engine displacement, fuel capacity, and weight, that determine a class of racing car.
so a spec series should be classed as a formula, right?
not even tenuously.
Formula is just a word, it could be replaced with "class" i guess if needed.
Anywho, how are we all? I've put up and taken down 2 tents and glue gun'd about 75 bottles shut! Productive evening.
nice. how long until she sails?
a looooong time, still need another 80 bottles i reckon, but i collected loads last week, so should be easy. i'll do it in the summer, i need to build 2 hull frames, a connecting piece anddd a mast and sail (tarp). mid august i hope. i have a 3 month summer :D
Yes but that normally implies that there is more than one kind of car in the field?
What are you making?
Here is a much better quality version of the GT5 E3 2009 trailer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2uQ2ayvvWY
Simply. Un. God. Damn. Believeable.
news to me.
the tents were just because i needed to decide which one to use...
the bottles....a catermeran.....
Is A1GP a Formula? IRL?
I always assumed from your definition that a spec series is a subset of a Formula where the whole field used the same engine and Chassis...
Shouldn't a proper Formula contain more than one way to make a car to the specifications?
Impressive :D
well. we watched and enjoyed formula two at the weekend, and those cars were the same.
i have a definition?
never really thought about it. formula one should, but only because if it didn't i would enjoy it less. what it's called doesn't really bother me.
Yes but they didn't used to be, did they?
I meant the one provided from google...
What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet
8-)
That was the traditional meaning within motorsport. It changed the day the FIA made Formula 3000 a spec series, although they knew it would upset people so they dropped the world 'Formula' and called it the 'F3000 International Series'.
I'm not here.
ummm, you got me. i have no idea?
ohhh!
I don't think there is a mechanism for FOTA to do that. Alianora is the only person who would know how it could be done
F2, FPA, F Vauxhall Lotus etc etc all spec series
Yeah in the old days F2's were basically like F1 cars but smaller. You had March, Brabham, Lotus, etc and all the F1 drivers participated.
I'm not saying anything against SF or F2, I just think it's the wrong thing to call it from a traditional POV...
OK ... but do you agree that they SHOULD be called Formula something?
fair enough. i have no strong opinion ether way. certainly not enough to warrant caps any how :)
F2 used to be different but Allan McNish and Mika Hakkinen were racing Vauxhall-Opel Lotus 20 years ago with spec cars
to me, Formula means slicks and wings, although Formula Ford is an exception ot that rule
I think the word 'formula' has just been coerced to mean open wheel racing series ala F1.
Similar the way 'leauge' has been corupted in other sports like football and Rugby to refer to large competitions
I guess it's partly because I think the whole SF series is just such a dumb idea marketed by dummies which makes me annoyed at the nomenclature...
and Formula Vee
i don't get it either, but they're going for another season at a time when a1gp are all but bankrupt. maybe they know something we don't?
SF started later so they are a little behind A1's curve in the going tits up stakes.
Probably that it would cost them more not to run it than it would to do so
Which in another exception to the spec series rule...it is kinda, but there are bits you can change
Showing my ignorance here but what is SF?
Racing football teams. *Weird*
Superleague formula.
A spec series where the cars are sponsored by footbal teams
You would think that if any series had money to be made out of highly visable marketing, it would be this one... but nothing
http://superleagueformula.com/
Not exactly the same crowd is it? (not that I would know)
No but i your football team is in action on the track whilst its the closed season on the pitch, you are ripe for being attracted to watch the show.
I'm amazed that i hadn't heard it was actually real until a week or 2 ago.
Ah yes, I do remember seeing the initial adverts.
They didn't exactly over-advertise it last season. Most of us didn't even know when the races were on until afterwards.
But only about a quarter of the teams are "big" clubs and the rest are a bit piquet.
There's no Man U, Barca, Bayern etc...
There is a Danish team though ... strangely it's a weird mid-table team from the farmlands of Middle Jutland...
Newcastle (giggle)
I was subscribed to their audio and video podcasts, they werent anything to write home about
There are still millions of potentialy 'automatic fans'
It just seems to have been mismanaged and a bit of a disaster
Didnt they used to have a NASCAR team? or am i dreaming?
I'm just not sure that every really works. Bit like A1GP. For racing fans, do you really want some looser from your own country to win? When I went to see it, it was to watch Nico Hulkenbergering.
True, but i think the idea of these series (Especially SF in this respect) is to bring in sports fans who dont have sports to follow in the summer, who are loyal to an idea which can be easily recognised by them. Something that can differentiate them from F3, F2 e.t.c which they would never watch
They sponsored a Lister Storm in GT1 a decade ago.
Won't be doin' that now ;-)
Ah that was probably it, although i still have images of oval racing in my head
They were rubbish - mind you, A1GP's weren't much better
Have you guys seen the "after the flag" MotoGP video podcast? It's ace - interviews, highlights and very funny - Bernie take note!
Maybe it raced at Rockingham
Was just looking for a pic to link to and found it entered the Daytona 24, maybe that's why.
Hehe, love the way a crazy corrupted memory can have some truth discovered in it here...
Yeah! I loved that, haven't subscribed to it since i got my new lappy. It tailed off a bit last season. For some of the shows they covered 2 races instead of doing 1 like usual, but was still great
http://www.anthonyreid.com/Largeimages/lister.jpg
http://www.hewland.com/jpgs/lister2001.jpg
Ha! I have no idea how or why i would have watched or remembered that!
Why why why, thats just the wierdest thing ever. My life is officially wiereded out
Did they ban it for being super-ugly?
Hola, dinner is done.
Anything nice?
chicken ceasar salad, my usual work dinner
It won things, then someone else designed something faster.
:D
Dontcha hate that?
I really hope that doesnt happen with the brawn, but its the circle of life
I hope it does to some extent!
Just give them till silverstone, then others can win. although irony demands Rubens wins there...
That would be funny
I am starting to think that Rubens is going to need Jenson to make a big mistake to beat him ...
Yep - waving to the crowd, one lap from the end, and falling off the road.
