Welcome to Wednesday! It's the last day of March already, and I can't quite believe it. Still, there's no time to relax as F1 is moving straight on from Australia to Malaysia, and back to back racing means busy, busy times! Here are a couple of things we're talking about:
- Renault have given a fabulous insight into the goings on back at the factory as the team prepare for the next race. They're talking about new updates to the car and their hopes for improved downforce. It looks like this is the first part of several posts, which is great news.
- Manipe has another take on the boring/non-boring race debate, which is about tyres and the requirement for stopping to change compounds. It's an interesting idea, but my one concern is that the racing has been all about tyres in 2010, so if you take that out of the equation, what are you left with?
- The McLaren debate is another that is rumbling on - two sides of the garage and whether they get on or not. James Allen had a balanced look at both sides of the argument, and I covered it a little in F1 Minute as well.
- Also, this is a rather fabulous photo for F1 Big Picture to celebrate a moment in history of the Malaysian GP. Finally, if you haven't seen it already, a quick reminder of how we cover the build up to each race in photos.
That should do it for now. I'm still having a rather stressful week, but I'm just grateful it's a four day weekend soon. I will see you in the comments.
Wow - the end of March already!! Soon it'll be Christmas again...
Nice warm fuzzy story folks, this made me feel nice inside:
http://pressdog.typepad.com/dogblog/2010/03/junqueira-will-go-fazzt-at-indy.html
have i ever mentioned how much i (heart) joe? poor chap has just been talking for hours.
i tried to get a shoutout for amy into the podcast, but i couldn't really make it work. i like the idea of her transcribing her own name, so i'll try it next time. couldn't quite get steven's question in either, but won't forget it.
i can imagine you'd be chatting away and then 2 hours later go "oh yeah, this is meant to be a podcast" ;)
You have to go where the conversation takes you
i should say a big #sorrychristine for talking past midnight. i may as well go buy milkybar now :D
it's been a month since the london meet, so there was plenty to cover. probably won't get edited tonight because it's quite a long show. first thing tomorrow evening though certainly.
has paddock life been discussed?
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/82525
came out yesterday, but i've only just got to it. i like that red bull are extending their engineering efforts beyond the OU podcast they did and are now visting schools.
:D
Haven't seen any discussion. It seems like since teams agreed to cut their costs back they are finding new areas to get involved in.
renault have their new engineering scheme too. i'm liking the outreach.
i dont think its new new, they're just advertising it a bit more.
i cannot believe heikki blagged himself a PR golf match:
Early morning today in KL, gonna play 18 holes with @rubarrichello and @aussie_grit in bridgestone event, tee off at 7.55 local time!
http://twitter.com/H_Kovalainen/status/11332635203
the OU course was new though wasn't it? or have they just gone multimedia?
renault and OU? this i dont know about?
ahh, cross purposes. i meant RBR.
the renault scheme is new too though, no?
Hey all
no apparently thats a few years old, they just hadnt publisied it at all.
wow i cant spell publicied
hello :) tired?
"The Renault F1 Team and Altran today launched the seventh season of a unique competition..."
i really should try and read more :)
yeah really really tired. But I've had a perfect day, have I ever said how much I love lukeh? :)
there ya go ;)
don't worry, happens to the best of us
yesterday kathi, today lou. this nightshift is catching on.
loooooooooooooots but its nice to hear anyway :)
You made it home then?
is there a lot of love in the room?
I've been around late at night before ya'know lol it helps when you come back from London though ;)
yep, so so so tired, but very happy
you don't normally arrive after midnight, you normally forget to go to bed.
hehehe not in this exact room.... As em is laying down feeling kinda ill again :( but three hours waiting in the cold didn't do any of us any good.
Can someone pray the trains don't strike please? I want there to be a meetup :(
can do.
aahhh yes, fair enough. It's your fault, you are a bad influence ;)
#blamesteven
thank you :)
You should have banned her from London if it makes her ill
hehehe
Oh I decided I really need some for of Internet friendly phone.. Commnting today was a nightmare.
have you seen this btw lou?
Sub Req: In a series of new articles, one of our photographers explains the good and the bad of shooting at each Formula 1 venue, and highlights their three favourite images of the weekend so far. First up is Albert Park, Melbourne
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2700
she was okay this morning.... As was the weather lol
Oh.my.goodness.
The BBC just did an advert advertising EU Insurance cards?!?
wow!!!!!! No sadly not :( I don't have a subscription :(
Digital cameras make photo-taking easy. Not that mine come out well, but I take far too many. Here are those from my holiday in Spain if you are interested.
Was he still in Australia too?
wouldn't that come under research/coursework/something education related?
you can buy web subs for a weekend :)
yup. if he misses his plane i'm blaming steven.
Gravity is really helpful on my Nokia.. so easy I was still tweeting through my first holiday day when I ought to have turned it off. :) At least it can only run one app at a time or you'd have suffered my comments too.
He says he is
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/03/30/a-quiet-day-in-melbourne/
YAY!
:)
Right well that took longer than planned to sort my Picasa things out, so my early night is down the drain. Never mind. :) Its only the year-end stock take tomorrow...
:-)
... so I'll see you tomorrow night in time for the VF1 quiz I guess.
night chap.
night pat
Night
i'll try talk to mum, see what she says. I neeed to read that article....
you can buy plus subs for a month or for a weekend, depends how many articles and how often i guess
i didn't know they did it for weekends. that's a great idea.
Right, I'm not tired but I'm up early in the morning and I've just heard lukeh got home safe and promises to come to the sidepodmeetup so all is good. Will chat to my rents about the autosport thing. Night! xx
only discovered by accident on sunday, it should come up again on friday
night lou
#whensthedate
#williamswedding
sounds perfect!!!
night lou.
Night
from tony dodgins:
Someone asked Richard Branson whether an association with cars whose wings fall off and whose petrol tanks aren't quite big enough is the sort of thing you're looking for as an airline boss!
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2706
Abracadabra?
heheheh:
Mark Webber just hit me with a golf ball. Motorsport is dangerous!
http://twitter.com/andystobart/status/11337528842
You made it. Someone posted duck pics yesterday. Gimme a second to see if I can find it
Nick can't object to these. You get two in a teacup.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/10-animals-in-teacups
Awwwww! Want!!
:D
I remember Nigel Roebuck writing a piece about going out on the circuit to watch a practise session with Keke Rosberg. Can't remember why he wasn't driving. Since they had good passes they were standing right against the armco. They were both smokers and had their heads down lighting their cigarettes when someone locked their brakes up and slammed into the barrier right in front of them with the wing going straight under it. Rosberg turned to Roebuck and said "Frank (Williams) keeps telling me smoking is bad for my health. Could be he is right"
What a surprise
I just really want my wages..... I have managed to become £2.36 overdrawn because of stupid skype. Pay me now please :(
Skype is free
:D
Not if you use it to make international calls. It took it upon itself to auto-topup my account despite 1000 times I keep cancelling that..... If I get charged for my stupid overdraft I'm gonna be mega angry!
this is awesome, i have to sleep, but i want to follow:
Had a birdie already .what about you mr @H_Kovalainen ?
http://twitter.com/rubarrichello/status/11338100835
it is if the other person has skype too, surely?
I assume Nick doesn't have Skype at his end. In that case it's his fault and he should pay
Yeah yeah. I use it to make paid calls to Nick's mobile though. It's pretty cheap but there is a charge.
I love the way the drivers have adopted twitter
it's a free install, why would he not? you can get it on android too.
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/android/
then it's a free phone, inside your phone.
unless he's changed his mobile, this won't cost you anything: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/android/
#nick=busted
ahh, was just trying to be helpful.
nothing to see here alison.
I use it on my mobile. I didn't realise he could get an app too. I might actually kill him now. We do use skype at home but I dunno we're both busy running around places....
oh bugger
:D
It's okay. I was already angry.... He made me throw chocolate in the bin :P
i'm wondering what we did without it.
all the way from dubai? that's quite some power
Is Clare head of communications at williams? whats her job title?
liam is her boss. she doesn't appear to have a proper title. why?
He made me feel sick. I didn't want it anymore.... You know that way he has with words.... ;)
...and it's claire ;)
How? Why?
Couldn't you have kept it for later
Yeah I guess so. I'm kinda impulsive like that.
Want a month doing media stuff at a team once term finishes, stand a better chance of getting something if i get the head honcho. am emailing bpl too. found liams email so all is well :D
appologies :D
tweet them too.
saying what exactly?
the man you're after, that's frank :)
hahaha.
Do you think its as simple as Frank.Williams@williamsf1..etc ahaha
just what you said. they'll probably read that last comment via google alerts anyhow. same as we have alerts for f1 minute, sidepodcast and christine blachford.
aha ok.
http://twitpic.com/1ava09
nuff said
you have to open it up in new tab, caption is the best bit
:)
Matt Bishop at McLaren
yeah i'll try the others once i hear back from the these 2, they are my closest.
good call. also gascoyne, but at least three times.
don't tell BPL you've been dreaming about him though ;)
#ihateyou
#notasdodgyasitsounds
I think i was awake at the time, which makes it day dreaming, which makes it oh so much worse
Don't forget Stuart used to work with Bishop
hehe. bless ya.
and favouritest.
Seeing as how he made that public, you'd best make it four
;)
which one of the two is your most favourite?
damnit. now 5.
Tell Renault Flav promised you a job
umm. hard to say.
I think Williams does a better job of keeping fans updated through twitter and such, but renault with the fan blog thing is pretty cool too.
I think Renault edge it just, but only because bpl is awesome and was totally helpful when i met him
I think thats guarenteed to work against me
what about: "i'd like to become a wedding planner, now can i please see your simulator?"
ooh i like
Give me work for a month and I will guarantee you a wedding
I do wanna check out Renaults Young Driver bit though, there was loads of photos and such on the FR3.5 media site last season but now they're all gone which is a pain
:D
Will you ever forget about that simulator?
NEVER
Yeah?
i'm temped by the fruit of another...
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/30/a-lap-of-malaysia-with-mark-webber/
How can you forget about the simulator. It's like a computer game on steroids
Yours or lou's
sorted
Lou and Lukeh
Anyone know if there's any truth in this..?
We just had an epic fight over a chocolate bar. I vote not me.
For bored people THe Grid is just starting on CHannel 4. Saw it last week and it was entertaining
but that means getting out of bed. boo
yeah, it was a loaner. proceeds going to charity.
Presumably it belonged to Mercedes so they are maybe trying to turn it into some good publicity and sell it for charity
Found it and the answer is yes
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/lewis-hamiltons-notorious-mercedes-benz-to-be-sold-at-auction-today/story-e6frf7jo-1225847712187
cheers
"Whats this?"
*Mercedes SLR, Worn Tyres, Used Engine*
"ah not worth it"
*Lewis Hamiltons*
"oh its definitely worth more than a brand new one"
So does this mean we now have free reign with the word "hoon" or is it already out of fashion?
Claire is tweeting pictures of Jenson on a grid.
Is there some race I don't know about?
http://twitpic.com/1c2nl4
I don't even know what it means? I presume some kind of erratic driving....
i'd swear i've been using the phrase "hooning around the track" for the past three years. i just didn't know it came from australia.
Unless the word has "Jeff" before it then no.
I heard hoon-gate many times over the weekend
Tsk tsk, Mr C. :P
VERY tsk tsk, Mr C. :P
Try emailing Joe, see if he has any contacts too. ;)
not a bad shout. thanks :)
however, he has just saved her amount of money!
Well, I guess people like d....ds' cars, after all. :D
:(
This would make me headbutt a wall
True, but love... love! That is priceless. :D
#hopelessromantic
It's really not very expensive.... I was just annoyed they auto topped up my account and made me overdrawn the day before payday! I'm sure Nick spends a small fortune calling me!
Awwww how cute!
and it coud have been free. pah.
i never autotop up for that reason, just make sure i have the right amount of money for whatever im doing, but then the only non skype-skype calls i make are to drivers for interviews, so i know roughly how much i sohuld need
I turned it off before. I think last time I topped it up, it turned itself back on and I didn't notice :(
You know how I said Mclaren wasn't very close?
Turns out its the closest.
I really should learn more UK geography
You could stay at Nick's house. He lives there.
Nick lives in Dubai?
Dubai = not in Surrey
hehe. claire and christine = same person:
I want to say that's vettel but knowing me I'm probably wrong!
http://twitpic.com/1c2qki
His dad has a house in Surrey.
although i'd be worried if claire confuses the bmw and the williams.
If I'm supposed to get paid today, when should I expect money?
Today?
But now is today. I have no money. I'm sure I've managed to get wages out an ATM on a night out before.
Most companies transfer the money early to guarantee it is there on time. They should be able to make an immediate transfer into your account.
Why is it not here?
I guess they didn't transfer it in time
Oh okay so it wouldn't be intentional for it not to be here. I wanted to get all my bills paid before I went to work and ended up forgetting....
Unlikely to be intentional. It happens to all companies at some time or other
I literally squealed when I saw that. I decided that in my fantasy land Heikki and Rubens are BFFs after Heikki tweeted him about his qualifying, and the evidence is stacking up.
When we saw Whitmarsh on Sunday he made a joke about how he learned a new word this weekend because he'd never heard of hooning before either :D
:D
Sleep for me.
Night all
In our case, it's usually not transferred until the overnight job is finished, so that's around 6 AM.
Night Jon.
Night Jonny
i suppose Ally dosen't annoy you?
Not particularly no. Sorry.
hmmm.
Night Jon

DT's new car
My boss has taken to calling me Alice which was semi-annoying for a while but I'm pretty used to it now.
very swish indeed
Morning everyone :)
But you are the son of Alice?
Mooorning :)
I am enjoying my brand new sleeping routine. I feel very refreshed :D
That's good! What is it?
I am going on a hunt for purple shoes
Well I went to bed nice and early. I did wake up in the middle of the night but I read my book then had another nap and now I've woken up in plenty of time for work.
On a more negative side, I haven't been paid :(
I never saw a purple cow;
I never hope to see one;
but I can tell you anyhow;
I'd rather see than be one!
I woke up at 4:30 this morning. There was quite the rain storm going on. I thought about going back to bed... but I couldn't somehow.
Awww I'm enjoying being awake in the morning. I've got a lot sorted out. I've mainly been harrasing my bank this morning.
Hi Christine, I thought I'd give you my reasoning why bringing an end to mandatory pitstops will actually make tyres more of an issue during races (As discussed previously here: http://mf1.ie/b/a/20/)
Making drivers not have to stop for tyres wouldn't stop tyres playing a huge role. What is needed is for the soft tyre to be so much quicker than the hard over a single lap, that it is absolutely essential for qualifying (and hence the top ten start on it), but that it won't comfortably be able to last the race.
We would then see drivers outside the top ten start on the hard, which would comfortably be able to last the distance, and so we'd have half the field on poor tyres after lap 15 say, and the other half on slower but more durable tyres. I think this would mean tyres would have more of a say than they currently do during the races. However, it mightn't have worked well in Oz had it been dry since the soft tyre was able to last the distance.
As we saw in Bahrain, the current regime of mandating a pitstop is actually making things more predictable. There is no spontaneity since we know all driver must pit at some stage. I think there was some suspense during the middle of the Australian GP as we wondered whether Button, Kubica, Massa and Alonso would pit. Even that was more exciting than seeing cars dive into the pits in Bahrain once Hamilton had set the ball rolling.
Wouldn't the ones that wanted a top 10 place use the soft in Q1 and Q2 and then all use a hard in Q3?
Oh my god total purple shoe success. I needed colourful high tops for work tomorrow and i jokingly said id go see if purple high tops exist nearby. And they do! For cheap at the nike outlet store!
hurrah
Purple shoes?
they look like this
They look like racing shoes.
They look a bit red in the top picture.
neither picture is quite true to the colour, the bottom one is much closer though. I wonder if I will ever get to wear them again after tomorrow :D
Thanks Manipe. I am totally confused by the tyre strategies so far this year and I hate that F1 is all about them now. But you have convinced me :)
Morning all. In 24 hours I will be on a plane to the UK ;9
Wooo! Although... it's quite rainy.
Well it's rainy and cold in Denmark too ;)
I'm thinking of visiting Chatsworth House, Meadowhall and the Donington Collection while based in Nottingham. When we go to London I have left it to Mrs. Goat to decide what we do...
I just bought fish and chips and I think they gave me enough chips for about 20 people
how far away from Melbourne are you? #hungry ;)
:D too far. I'm in Warrnambool now. I tried to throw the Castrol Rankings from the great ocean road for Christine.
I didn't know Men & Motors was disappearing. Last day today.
Oooh, cheers. I don't think it worked, but appreciate the effort :)
Awww :(
I like this motel. it has a free laundry, and the wifi router is in my room. How silly are these people?! :-)
Oh Crimson Taurine, your nectar hath been calling me all week. I cannot resist your temptations any more!
GRR... My Danish Family have given us a shopping list of things to get for them while in the UK GRRR
It is:
A Nintendo DSi
Converse Hi-Tops for kids
Hanna Montana clothing (various items)
:(
Morning :)
Ahh, that'll be fun to buy!
Morning.
It is amazing how peer pressure and social groups can change and influence someone's thinking.
My 6-year old niece used to like the simple things but as soon as she got to school it was all Hello Kitty, Nintendo and Hanna Montana!
I was just trying to prove to someone that the whole internet knows I'm a Heikki fan, and it turns out if you google "sorryamy" and "heikki" together you get 396 results :D
Yay!
Best way not to get picked on is to like what other people like.
Yikes. Amy is from the internet now
I am writing a blog post about my run-ins with him :D
You could be like me. I used to buy my neices racing car and cycling stuff when they were little :D
Totally. Then when you get to uni it becomes cool to dislike what everyone likes ;)
I keep trying ;)
Double yay!
So about the pub meetup thing - after I finish work today I will have sporadic internet access. Can I email someone my mobile number and if it happens someone lets me know about it?
I am saving the rest of the stories from the trip for my guest post. You can expect it around November ;)
Wow, that soon?
Life is so confusing :)
On time then. I'm glad you are doing it.
I did not specify it would be 2010.
Don't think you have got away with it that easily.
Ahh, good point.
Did you guys see the Lotus Podcast has been posted - it's hosted by Super Ted again :D
Didn't we cover it in the voicemail? I could tell you about the visit to the mclaren pit again :D
*opens google reader up*
*looks at unread stuff*
I shall see you guys with amy's post in November.
november eh? 2011?
i have a new theory. i wonder if i can stretch it to a blog post or squeeze it into a comment?
i'm targetting reading it all within the next 2 years ;) I don't usually get loads but there's hundreds and hundreds just from 1 day!
Blogging is good!
should i race amy?
you will win. I will be the Heikki to your Lewis. Or the Jarno to your Heikki.
You know what you would say if I said that eh? ;)
Aww that's so sweet :)
I have a new theory ban tyres in f1... I do think that it might reduce the amount of overtaking though.
true
I've heard of some really wierd musical collabarotions and ideas, but this really takes the biscuit. http://tinyurl.com/yguxrtx
f1 travelator?
No mate, we need Wipeout. I mean, how awesome was that game? :D
Wait hold on... On the weekend we realised that the rain really helps the racing... I propose F1 slip and slide!
:D
there was a delorean in Melbourne.... I am putting two and two together.
"It's your kid, Nelson!" cried the Doc. "Something's got to be done about your kid!"
i think maybe the wdc should be decided on a round of swingball.
:D :D
I would have said golf but after learning that Rubens got a birdie and Heikki two bogeys I'm not so sure. #twitterisawesome
Oooh Christine, you've got me thinking lots now about your Doctor Who spin off blog post.
Wooo :)
Hehehe.
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/03/30/your-doctor-who-spin-off/#comment-1410
tada! :)
Crikey! Excellent stuff.
I suppose if I was to mention Billie Piper people would laugh.....
because we want to.
Mark Webber just hit me with a golf ball. Motorsport is dangerous!

:D
Morning!
Morning :)
yo
Everyone having a nice day?
my day was super. I hope the same can be said for all of you back there in the past :D
Everyone having a nice day? {Comment #275}
I'm enjoying my nice quiet day, thank you.
I haven't done very much yet. but I think I need to go to uni. I'm not quite sure.
A bit mixed for me. Had to deal with an unreadable external HD (thankfully not mine), sent it off to get repaired (and hoping to recover some of the data in there). Otherwise, it's all good. :)
im off to see my cousin soon... So it will probably be a good afternoon. Not as good as yesterday, but good enough :)
Did you try spinrite?
hehe. entering my 4-day weekend tonight (our long weekend is Thu-Sat, not Fri-Mon). lotsa stuff planned for tomorrow. :)
They did mention something about tools, and I think that's one of them. I left it to the pros to sort out, though. :)
It's the Boat Race this weekend as well. Easter is a busy sporting time this year!
Fair enough.
I'm gonna go with either Oxford or Cambridge to get the win there.
yay! I cambridge is awesome!
Oh that boat race
My colleague mentioned that the other day and we thought it was a euphemism for his wife's impending due date...
The Boat Race?
Yeah. He said "I'm free for the next couple of weekends and then it's the boat race"...
How does that... actually, no, I don't even want to know.
I can't believe anyone plans their life around the boat race though, it's takes like... ten minutes.
pure mayhem.
I actually know how that works, but I'll say no more. :D
When it's on TV, does it come with previews and analysis? Maybe even a post-race forum? ;)
I did say 10 minutes of pure mayhem but it only did the last bit!
There's about an hour's build up, I think.
Ignorance is bliss.
They cut out all the boring bits?
You got that right. My sister is a midwife and she just loves to tell us all about it
It is. I love it. The first year I watched someone had been stripped of their medal for leaving to join the Olympics or something. Even rowing has politics.
Oooh Christine, I forgot to say earlier after replying to your Dr Who post, I mentioned to Lou yesterday how I've been waiting to use a blog entry title for about 5 months now and I finally get to use it on Saturday evening :D
I'm intrigued!
one of my friends is, I have learned not to look at her facebook photos.
When you see it, you'll totally understand how much I've been wanting to use it.
Um...eeewww (I think)
It was to do with a day trip skiing you see.
How is that different to planning stuff around F1?
There seems to be lots of promo going on in Malaysia over the last few days. Remind me to go to it all when I am there next year ;)
The race is at least 90 minutes. Plus you have a 60-minute quali and 4 hours of FP in total. :)
You're going to Malaysia next year too? Paul said yesterday he might go next year too. Uh-oh... I'm tempted again. :D
If I'd been just a tad more impulsive on Monday I'd be going this year
Your Classic Malaysian Grand Prix: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2010/03/your_classic_grand_prix_race_t_1.html
Except it's chosen by the BBC and they will continue to use the Legard NPR-voiced version when they have no BBC commentary. FTA:
You will notice that in two of the races - 2002 and 2003 - we have asked our F1 commentator Jonathan Legard to voice the highlights, and have blended his reportage with Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz's analysis from the live race coverage at the time.
This is because it is our policy to only use BBC commentators on our F1 coverage, and we do not have the 5 Live commentary from those races for various reasons.
I know some of you don't like this approach, but I'm afraid there is no prospect of it changing.
You have to go, I need a guide. Amy spoilt me at Melbourne :-)
i'd swear i've been using the phrase "hooning around the track" for the past three years. i just didn't know it came from australia. {Comment #145}
The one time I'd seen it before this weekend was Matt Bishop using the term to describe the Proton Wiras in an informal race between journalists back in 2007. He quickly pointed out this was possible and ethical because the Protons were so slow that even racing them wasn't enough to take the cars anywhere near the local speed limits and they handled so badly that you couldn't do anything particularly dangerous in them!
neilcole: Kaj: "Me & Kimi watched the #F1 Aus GP. He fell asleep with 20 laps to go. Don't think he's that interested in it any more"
oops
He's become Niki Lauda!
he's a bad Heikki fan!
I wasn't being particularly serious.
Oh dear
But the boat race is serious according to my friend ;)
What timezone is Jordan in?
I know! I love it.
He's in a world of his own...
...ohhh, the country.
noooo idea. Did Pamela email you?
still can't believe you wouldn't tell me :(
lol
Yes she did, thank you
It's one of those events where you have to watch it and have no idea why, even though you wouldn't for the rest of the year. Like the Grand National and some others depending on the sports you like (I think Wimbledon and the British GP are included here...)
I'm thinking of visiting Chatsworth House, Meadowhall and the Donington Collection while based in Nottingham. When we go to London I have left it to Mrs. Goat to decide what we do... {Comment #210}
Wow! Looks like you're going to be in my area of the country :)
Tip: if going to Meadowhall, be sure to go there before about 4pm (preferably on a weekday) because after that it gets terribly crowded.
I just bought fish and chips and I think they gave me enough chips for about 20 people gave me enough chips for about 20 people {Comment#211}
Oh, so that's where the people at my local chippie get trained! (They have a rather... ...exaggerated... ...interpretation of portions as well).
Yeah I'm off to Nottingham to see the Mad Italian side of my Family. I'm also planning to meet a colleague in Leicester to see the Tigers Rugby game on Saturday
Thanks for the tip ;)
You shall not make me feel guilty... :P it is awesome though. I can't believe I haven't accidentally typed it in the comments! (it'll probably be very facepalm worthy now I've built it up so much)
Anways, I'm off to uni for a bit so I'll speak to you all later.
have fun!! :)
i really like this post:
http://ouseful.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/quick-viz-australian-grand-prix/
just when you thought it couldn't get any more geeky.
He is my stats hero :D
So Nick in Dubai, have you ever seen camel racing? I have just found out about it - it's mad!
i done blogged: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/31/stupid-rubber-regulations-why-f1-refuelling-made-sense/
no no no. I don't want more information!!!!
I've chosen my title. You win. :D
:)
amy, you make an excellent benchmark.
Totally. Then when you get to uni it becomes cool to dislike what everyone likes ;) {Comment #230}
Is this why my time at uni was so much happier than my time in secondary school?
its my middle name. Just like that lady from the BBC, Benchmark McKenzie.
Well it's why mine was ;)
:D :D
Tip: if going to Meadowhall, be sure to go there before about 4pm (preferably on a weekday) because after that it gets terribly crowded.
Thanks for the tip ;) {Comment #329}
Another tip: There's a place called the F1 Shop in the Oasis part of Meadowhall (right-hand side of the ground floor, in a relatively enclosed part of the mall - can't miss it due to massive display cases full of merchandise). It does what it says on the tin and is worth a look, if only to admire some of the more unusual items on the walls. The staff are really dedicated (it was one of the first shops to re-open after the mall got flooded back in 2007) and are quite happy to chat about F1 when not serving customers.
Incidentally, my mum's farrier is a Leicester Tigers supporter.
Okay time to go, see ya xx

Have a good day!
Ooh, another Friday Driver: http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns22152.html
via Mr Wolf.
*sulks*
He talked about it on the Lotus Podcast how he wants to help bring F1 to Malaysians and he is really excited by it...
That was a bit of fail timing from myself, just as I get into Uni to use the library, the library closes for an hour for lunch. :(
Booo. What are you going to do?
gosh, do you go to uni in Spain?
I've come into the computer suites for a bit, which are super quiet as it's Easter. and I have Fruit Gums to keep my busy for the next hour :)
Are they like Wine Gums but different?
they're like fruit pastilles but as wine gums and quite solid, very yummy :) hours of fun!
What fruits do you have?
Whilst we're talking about food, it is someone's birthday and I chose to have a chocolate muffin over a cream cake because I assumed I would make less mess.
Clearly, I don't know myself very well at all.
Not sure actually. Looks like theyre orange, strawberry... blackberry... urm... green....
Hehehe. Grape? Gooseberry!
Morning lovely Sidepopeople
I have a feeling it's the less exciting Apple
I would have made the same choice, cream cakes tend to explode from experience.
Oh boo.
Yeah, they're not exactly willy wonka. Still yummy though.
What was the name of the show alison (and/or steven?) likes, by the way? russell Howard asked a crowd member yesterday what the worst recording they'd been to was, and they said Pointless. I'm sure I've seen it in the comments.
Yup, that's the one. :)
In that case if certain commenters was in the crowd, I fear all hell would have broken loose. :P
:D

Think of it like this - for Heikki to give his space first means he's confident he can be completely prepared for Malaysia's challenges even with one less session. Plus it's nice of him.
Or it's a PR stunt because it's his home race? ;)
Or it's a PR stunt because it's his home race? ;) {Comment #370}
It might be a PR stunt (I may hope it's simply Lotus borrowing Force India's idea, but I'm likely to be disappointed), but it still indicates a certain confidence for Heikki, rather than Jarno, to give his session to Fairuz.
That story says they flipped a coin?
That's pretty awesome stuff from a coin toss (which is apparently what happened) ;)
Yay, the library is open again! although I have spent my hour ranting about Facebook - http://wp.me/pKD9X-2L
Right guys,
I'm off on holiday which means I will have sporadic internet. Hopefully I'll see you next week but if not, have a happy easter and enjoy the Grand Prix ;)
Righteo all, I have watched Heikki cook some chicken, and now I am off to bed :D nighty night!
Have fun!
night amy!
Enjoy, Gavin!
Night, Amy. :)
Bye Gavin!
I know they're screencaps of the races they've chosen but using images like that as the main focus on BBCF1's homepage just looks... wrong http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/default.stm
they look stolen
Can they not afford to get the proper images?
Hey folks
I'm going to Tesco's to get the car cleaned and washed etc (they have a company that does it in the car park while you shop)
but i have nothing to do while i wait, ideas?
Buy some fruit gums
ooh plan. are they the ones with or without sugar on? like wine gums?
They're the same shape as fruit pastilles, but as hard wine gums
ergh. gotta have sugar on for me!
My new driving licence came today.
I miss my green one
Get used to the pink one, boyo!
Can i have my green one but that says passed on it?
Well I could photos... actually, no, I'd better not.
ahaa
Mr C, you wouldn't mind if everything in our cupboards ended up like this, would you? http://maxpictures.com/weblog/2007/04/10/lost-labels-for-your-dharma-initiative-needs/
oh wow.
My favourite is this one: http://maxpictures.com/weblog/2008/04/15/di-products-gallery/di-mints/
Just generic mints. Honest.
my only issue is it looks a bit "tesco value".
It's Dharma Value, innit.
is there dhama finest?
Afternoon all
I think it's because Ocado don't deliver to the island
Ooh, good question. I bet the top bods had it.
I love following the twitters of the people behind the F1 2010 game as it continues to give us little bits of information each time :) For example, this tweet from the chief game designer for the game: http://twitter.com/T4RG4/statuses/11370350369
I think its unfair they are playing and we can't. ;)
Jumped the start. Naughty.
isn't that a drive through?
So you can jump the start and run over your pit stop jack-man if you want. Grand Theft Formula 1, I say.
They are pretty much amazing, can't wait to play it.
serious geek out!
i love that even the "quick Google Earth to check the geodata looks okay" blows my tiny mind.
Gotta go to bed. :)
But before I do...
http://www.formula1.com/video/
AUS onboard is up... and it's from Senor Alonso. :D
Night, folks!
ooh yay. They definitely need to use the same band as they did for last years Australian GP video. Their name escapes me...
Night Journeyer :P
It's a one lap vid from Alonso's car so no soundtrack
The edited highlights video isn't up yet
See ya Journeyer
If I request the highlights from Bahrain will I create a quantum singularity?
:)
Yeah I know, I meant for when they do upload it.
Looks like there are more shots of people than cars
No surprise there then

I need help with some coding, i've made a really simple site for my dad and it involved pictures as links. It's basically a 1 page site where his books, projects, business etc are all linked from, but they are linked as pictures. But of course when you link them they have the blue border, i can change that colour, but is there anyway of removing it/making it a clear border?
Any help would be great :)
Good evening guys... (well it is here)...
Just a quick memory jog that the Jordan rally starts tomorrow and we are only two hours in front of the UK...
Tomorrows 7 stages start at 11am and finish before it gets dark (the stages here would be totally impossible to drive in the dark) ....
Just thought I'd mention it....
Just checked the Fantasy IndyCar championship
http://fantasyindycar.com/
Have done brilliantly by going from 1st to 24th. I knew it wouldn't last for long.
I have sent in a guest post. I think it's my first...
Oh no it isn't ;)
either via the html img tag, add border=0 or via the stylesheet:
hope that makes sense :)
You are a gentleman and a scholar :D thank you
Thanks Ms Snowcat
Shall look out for the highlights
I lost 509 places after Australia!
Didn't realise I was 36th after Bahrain
Very good piece from Mr C (the other one)

Overall, that is
I like the in the private league tables the overall position is also given in brackets
yay!
oh good lord:
Eddie Irvine will front a new Formula 1 radio show on Sunday evenings after each race.
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/82563
Irvine and Goldstein? That can only end up well
Hello

Surely this has got to be at least +1 for Senna and Chandhok?
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=149394&catID=1101-4458
i can see these two running away with the championship!
someone appears to have revamped the tv show inside grand prix. i'm not sure if it works at all, but take a look here:
http://www.insidegrandprix.com/
ergh. thats awful
certainly different.
definitely that
Errr...
2005 and the great Suzuka race....
Kimi from 17th to.... first....
Alonso also did his fair share of passing including the move on Schuey at the outside of the 130R.....
But also the dread reliability issues for Macca snatching defeat from the jaws of victory... with a little help from JPM...
So nearly a very good season....
I see talk of the university Boat Race.
I like how when ITV took over coverage it gave Steve Rider a job, until last year when he did something else. I also like ITV's innovation of giving a mic with no time delay to each cox so now we know they swear profusely. :)
Back on the Beeb this year and back to being a Saturday, both as it should be.
Hehehehe.
Hello all, was last day at work today. Will not miss the work but will miss the people. Had a good send off, they gave me Hotel Chocolat chocolate ;)
Hi. May need pics as I'm not familiar with that one. :)
awesome guest post ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/31/my-formula-a-major-overhaul-for-2012/
another to follow shortly.
hey janna
There is 1hr until the VivaF1 quiz
They gave me this box but all Hotel Chocolat is fantastic. There's a shop in Brighton & they give out samples :)
I just remembered I boiled the kettle when I came in the door, but never made a tea. That was two hours ago.
It's possible you may need to re-boil
Oh wow, looks great.
hi everyone :)
Hi
Thanks to Mr C I've had Squeeze songs on the brain all day. It could be a lot worse but they really don't go away
Evening all, everyone had a nice day?
'lo. I did a stock take. So not really. :)
Hi lou & hi Rocket. Nice day thanks, how about you?
evening! i finally found some time to update my podcasts today
my day has been good, spent it at my cousin's and had a nice girly day with my aunt :)
Hey Janna, Rocket and lou, hope you're all good.
Hi RG, assume you are supporting Barcelona tonight?
Oh yes. Could be tough if their shooting is like the last attempt though.
My train has been officially cancelled :(
to london? :(
Ah no :(
Oh no, did they say why?
Strikes
Strikes. They've announced a lot of timetables today. My train is definitely cancelled.
Boooo. Stupid strikes eh.
:(
But what if the injunction goes through tomorrow to stop the signallers going on strike? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8596019.stm Maintenance will still come out but if the signallers can't strike there could be more trains. You could double check tomorrow
Because that worked so well when BA tried it ;)
another fab guest post: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/31/build-me-a-rocket-ship/
That's true but they did delay the BA strike so it could mean your train is OK. Just trying to look on the bright side of an exceptionally dark cloud ;)
It seems to me that we need a boring start to the F1 season every year as it's producing some fantastic guest posts as well as equally fabulous posts from the Sidepodhosts. Am not in the right frame of mind to digest all of the ideas tonight but will definitely read them again tomorrow. Thanks everyone
:)
evening
Hello
hey
big picture ping: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/31/trouble-looming/
more to come, we seem to be having a busy evening. hey all.
Heya
Last call for anyone interested in the Viva F1 quiz - http://www.vivaf1.com/chat.php
Looks like that sky will be repeated this weekend. Let's hope it makes the racing interesting rather than completely washed out
Meanwhile in other news the Pope is confirmed to be Catholic...
Don't mind at all. I'll miss the last half hour of the race if I have a match, so it can pour down all it wants then.
that is a risk. on the other hand. if it's a complete washout and bernie loses money, he might see sense and revert it to the old timeslot.
maybe.
I would prefer that. I can't see the race live this weekend because I'll be on my way to Easter service. I've got no problem getting up earlier to watch.
same here.
(except for the bit about easter service)
Very impressed with the Renault blog post. It's what USF1 were promising us.
renault blog post?
ooh in the daily. that was almost a day ago :)
carry on.
I'm commenting in the daily thread about something mentioned in the daily post. Give me a break!
hehe. apologies, i thought i'd missed out on something.
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/31/malaysia-2010-race-information/
It's OK. I've not been spending as much time here as I maybe should have, so I have been a little behind
miiiiiissed you.
i think, we have:
- x1 f1 minute
- x1 digest preview
- x1 aside with joe
- x1 daily post
left to go up tonight. how come wednesday is our busiest day of the week?
Recommend you do guest posts on a Tuesday :)
Technically the Daily is tomorrow.
it needs writing tonight :)
Awwwww, you guys...
Oohh wonder if there will be an April Fool
Really, really not! :)
true :)
The trick is to do it on a different day, otherwise people will guess
Why try and trick anyone? It's a stupid idea.
But you would say that anyway wouldn't you, just to put people off the scent
I suppose I would.
it's quite fun when gmm fall for it.
I have successfully booked a bus. No driving for me :D
I may resolve never to get the train again. I've never had so much stress my whole life.
hehe.
is it a megabus?
Sadly no. They no longer service Carlisle. I have a national express.
wow!!! how come it's now 9pm! i feel like someone stole my evening..
hi me again, sorry i came and then disappeared, had a rather bad phone call...
time has a habit of disappearing when you're on here doesn't it?!
i was just catching up on comments, twitter and my feed reader, looked up at the time and realised hours had passed. no fair.
That and the fact the Government has taken an hour away from us and won't give it back until October
:) does mean my little boy is sleeping in for an extra hour in the morning tho...
That doesn't seem to work here :(
Least he isn't turing off TV's.
yes, sunday was lovely cos of that - i managed to watch the whole race in peace!
Evening all, everyone had a nice day? {Comment #467}
I have. Lovely and quiet. I just need to figure out how to turn this half-idea for Script Frenzy I have into an outline in the next 2.5 hours...
That'll be how it's nearly 9.30 and I'm only just eating dinner
That starts in 2.5 hours? Aww come on.
Oohh wonder if there will be an April Fool {Comment #514}
Probably several. I fondly remember the one in 2002 when Jordan tried to convince everyone they were moving the factory to Dublin. Whether Sidepodcast decides to generate any is another question entirely.
i know a song about them......

It does in the UK (it starts midnight in whichever part of the world the participant lives). Are you doing Script Frenzy this year too?
Good evening...
Hello
I have it ingrained into my brain thanks to tinpot local radio playing it 25 times a day when I worked in a warehouse
there are lovely hostesses apparently.
the drinks are sky high though.
the less said about big countries, the better
hehehe
:)
Aww I love the Divine Comedy though.
"She said...there was something in the wood shed..."
hi
Quiz is over and here is Spot The Difference:
http://i40.tinypic.com/nb501s.png

except maybe some wood.....
I failed miserably at it today :(

I do like that one :)

i have 2 rather obvious ones...
Five
Evening all. looks like I have a lot of reading to catch up on

Hi, you missed a Lotus round in the quiz, the old Lotus.

Damn. Do you have a link for the answers thread?
Not yet
i have five! :D
Yay, well done
Think I'd better go to bed, lots to do tomorrow.
Take care all, will be reading the comments over the next few days but may not get the opportunity to join in so Happy Easter, enjoy Malaysia, don't miss Dr Who and I'll see you on the other side :)
Doctor Whoooooooo!! See ya Janna, enjoy your easter too
Night Janna
i can't find the last one

I'm off too. Up at 5 again tomorrow.
Meh.

Ouch, see ya
We couldn't see any. We are watching a film though

i found it!
yay!! :)
I love how Alguersuari sees the positive in everything.
he's such a positive guy - i loved this tweet he did earlier...
JAIMEALGUERSUAR Best tomato juice ever! http://twitpic.com/1c6b5s
Positive tomato juice is the future. I'm positive about this prediction.
it just made me smile - it was so random!
Evening everyone :)
Oh dear nobody has commented on my post... I knew I should have written my guest post about my new plan to run all f1 cars on cheese. In the cheese based formula there would be a open choice of using hard, soft, goat or blue cheese. But you will be forced to use at least two of the cheeses during the race unless due to inclement weather the races is declared officially blue by the stewards.
I knew I should have written my guest post about my new plan to run all f1 cars on cheese. {Comment #590
:D
i haven't got there yet :( reading through feedreader as i type... comment coming soon :)
hehe. editing the joe show, my bet is the convo will pick up later. it's a timeless post and maybe there will be more to add post sunday too.
i suppose i better get myself something to eat...
Oh indeed I'm not really worried... I had just thought of the cheese thing and it seemed like a good "in"
I am editing too! We're like an editing sweatshop or something.
I am just reading the guest posts now and I promise I will comment
sidepodproductivity
You make a gouda point, people should comment more. There's stilton's of time for people to see it though, don't worry.
Oh wow.
You beat me to the puns Edam you Lukeh!!!
Calm down sir, just briethe in and out slowly :)
:D hehe
ehehehehehe :D
You're really getting on my goats now! You've got to camembert down or you'll roule the day you took me on! :)
A good competitor knows when he's out punned, especially by the best.
Pull the udder one, I may be greater now, but you are still a babybel in the punning ways... One day you will out cheese me. And when that day comes it really will take the biscuit!
ahahahahaha :D
Babybel!
WHen that happens Lukeh will be the big cheese
Poetry in motion, it truly is.
you blue me away with those puns, now i'm just cheesed off i can't think of any...:)
I think he just finds them blowing in the bries
If only I could make something out of Cheddar, and Red Leicester, apart from some tasty cheese on toast (leaving the Red Leicester on the side)
I believe the correct way to say it is "Ba-ba-baa-ba-babybel!"
mini real cheese
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/31/f1-digest-2010-malaysia-preview/
The advert is clearly false advertising anyways. I once dropped a babybel and it didn't bounce.
It just splattered.
you beat me!
(by several hours)
In your defence, the preview is shorter than an aside.
true story.
I did also have to write mine though.
depends where you live.
on a trampoline, down a hill maybe
I knew we should'nt have moved away from our trampoline house on the side of a hill!!!
Yes, good point. All Mr C has to do is tell Joe to stop talking. Oh wait.
:D
Oh yea. Mr C wins :)
right - i'm gonna go now - need to eat, bye!
cheese? see ya rocket.
Bye rocket
rocket salad
see ya! :)
no - gives you nightmares before bed! strawberry jelly is calling from the fridge...
:)
Same, cept more bed. And if I dream of cheese *shakes fist*
night and lotsa love
would that make it a nightmare? night sir.
night RG
Night
There is a fantastic Steven Fry monologue from A Bit of Fry And Laurie where he says, "I was out walking one day in a beautiful meadow, among the gentle bries and camembert... I had packed for our picnic... when I suddenly stooped to pick a buttercup... I don't know why people leave buttocks lying around."
It might be my favourite tv moment ever... Either that or another scene with hugh and Steven where the dialogue goes:
Hugh: I've never understood what happend with the boy?
Steven: The Boy?
Hugh: Yes the boy, why did he go and live with Margery after the divorce?
Steven: Well I came home one night. I was drunk... I was reckless... Margery's mother in law was staying with us that night... and well she was annoying me so I tipped an entire trifle on her head.
Hugh: So she got custardy?
Night
see ya Rocket.
Just had some ba-ba-baaaaa, baa-dairylea on Toast.
i'm off too, see you all tomorrow. I might be a lickle drunk tomorrow night.
:D
I got a Script Frenzy idea :D
Can't start writing it for another 48 minutes :(
its great you're doing that! i bet theres one of those for each month!
its great you're doing that! i bet theres one of those for each month! {Comment #644}
There are quite a lot of monthly writing things now. I do three: Script Frenzy (100 pages of a medium requiring a script, which is April), NaNoWriMo (50,000 words of fiction novel, which is November with various break-out projects that I don't do) and NaBloPoMo (originally 1 blog entry a day for each day of November, but now there are mini-NaBloPoMo challenges for every month of the year, each with optional themes; my blog is about to start the fourth successive month of mini-NaBloPoMo).
I find these projects great motivational and creative tools that help me become a better writer.
they sound great :D
I may try Script Frenzy!! (i know it starts in 40 minutes ;) )
Have you ever tried free writing?
Time for sleep for me, goodnight everyone :)
Night Mr Lukeh :D
night sir
