We are still on hiatus, but it's a new day which means it's time for a new (scheduled in advance) daily post. I wonder what topics you are all talking about.
Apparently today is the day that Christchurch in New Zealand was chartered as a city. Consider that your fact of the day, and another potential topic for you.
If you're wondering what's going on, then please check out the two very short posts that precede this one - yesterday's daily and the Sidepodradio update.
As mentioned yesterday, please be nice to each other while we’re not around, because we’ll be even more miserable if we have to get back and wade through pages of nasty comments.
Have a good day.
How does it become a new day, like every day!! So unexpected!
God might know, if He drops by.
Now speaking of F1. I really hope they don't do something silly like closed cars or huge windscreens, after the past two weeks.
Might be a decent idea...
I think the deflector shield Autosport did a mock up of doesn't look all that bad. Certainly a more logical solution to closed cockpits, especially in terms of driver extraction after a crash.
Hello all. Great to see a new daily and Mr C in the comments (I haven't read what he's written yet).
To everyone feeling unhappy about any part of their life, remember we are here for a good time, not a long time.
I feel so old.
Seems odd that the more popular option is the one that would have helped the guy who didn't die but not the one who did
The Colin McRae motto
I would like to see Rop Fuel dragster like overhead protection
Sounds like some IndyCar bloggers might be about to take a hiatus too!
But that wouldnt stop getting hit in the face surely?
Let's hope the changes work then
i like that :)
No. There would need to be something else to do that but it shouldn't be hard to engineer.
This is officially the best song......

aha nice
Very cleverly done!
On my mobile at the dragonboat dock. Where's that youtube link go, Steven?
Yeah, that might work. Still be an "open top" car then.
What youtube link?
i know i haven't been around much this last hour but i'm off to sleep now ;) night everyone! x
night!
If you mean the last one posted here it is Jeremy Clarkson beatboxing
Night Lou
Ha! Can't wait to check it out when I get back to the Real Internet connection.
So why do you have dragon boats in Canada?
Good night all ... will let you know tomorrow if holiday happens ;)
Night Gavin, hope you get lucky!
Night. I'm off as well. I have a day of stock taking to (not) look forward to.
Yeah that too :-)
Night Pat
Hive fives must go to me as i'm going to be asleep before 2 for the first night in a while.
Woop
Night all
Good night Gavin and Pat.
Best of luck getting away Gavin

Morning.
Hey Sean. Fridays are good.
Hi guys
You turned up just as everyone left
Indeed they are.
No-one should tell Mr C that Apple is the world's most feminine brand.
http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/30/apple-as-the-worlds-most-feminine-brand/
Hello all!
Morning.
Hi Joe
Hey guys...actually it's evening here, beer and a looming class tommorrow
Steven, you're into the space shuttle thing, right? Well the news advised us to be prepared for two sonic booms tommorrow at 1040 as it will fly over us on its approach to KSC
The landing is scheduled for 10:48am at Kennedy
Joe,
I had a question for you from last night. Is there something odd about the Tampa ball park? I barely watched any of the series this week but I saw three triples had been scored. I don't think I have seen that many ever.
apparently they'll leave their sonic booms here in SW Fla at 1040. I enjoy the booms
I haven't heard a proper sonic boom since the Concorde test flights
If you're not expecting it, it's very shocking. Once I had people doing work in my attic and they shuttle came by (sonic booms) and I thought one of them fell through my ceiling.
We get 911 calls on them all the time, "I just heard two huge explosions"
You would think after 120 plus flights people would figure out what it was. I guess you only have a few more to go.
and that will all be over soon. Boooo :-(
Yeah, but we get 911 calls over stupider stuff than that, so it keeps me employed
When will some other country stand up and take on space?
I heard that the US will be hitching rides with the Russians from now on...
Fantastic. I feel the world is going backwards in the "space race". Some day kids won't believe we ever went to the moon.
Oh wait....
Quite a few of them are. The manned lunar missionslook like being very international with NASA, ESA, Canada, Japan, Russia and China all possibly involved. All bar China are involved in the space station with Russia having two different vehicles that go there. One manned and one unmanned and ESA have an unmanned vehicle due in the next year or so.
Yeah, don't mention that to Buzz Aldrin, he punched some guy out that blurted that out to him. Way to go, 80 year-old!
Until the new vehicle is ready on the the Soyuz can be used to transport people.
So much money wasted on defense could be used for good stuff.
Oh, come on, Halliburton needs that money...and DICK Cheney.
Look at all the money spent on nukes that could have been used to open space up by now.
by the way....that was sarcastic
Yep. Still, I wonder if proper manned space research other than in orbit will ever be feasible.
I got it
boo christchurch. I dont like christchurch. Far too flat.
It has to be. One day we have to get off of this rock or we are gona get squished.
Are giant robots on the way already? Yikes, where's my tin foil hat?!
Right, am back. Can't sleep.
Found an F1 season preview i wrote at the beginning of 2006 i think, going to read it to see how laughably wrong it is.
I just want to point out that it wasn't me that said Heikki looked scary. Well I didn't say it first.
Sorry, I should have expected more from you...my apologies. Well at least we can expect Michael at the top of the podium soon
Nope. Other rocks flying around. I had some great stuff for sidepodradio that is going to be out of date by the time it is re-scheduled. On that day there is a nice bigrock coming close to us.
That didn't last long
Amazing stuff out there. Maybe you can live-chat it on the day?
And the Renault hearing miraculously has been scheduled for the week before Valencia and Carlos Ghosn is saying the outcome of it could decide their future in the sport so we know how that one is going.
It of course has just dawned on me why i can't sleep...
I take sleepy sleepy meds, which i didn't take tonight.
High five Mr Waldock
There are lots of rocks. Whatever day we eventually broadcast there will be one close. There is actually one day soon when there are three.
I think I understand why they failed then
Cool.
I am glad to see that. The FIA need to get it's head out of it's ***. It's about the fans and having 20 cars on the grid, you might as week kick out the Brawn team for the lost spring
Now i have to muster up the motivation (yes thank you Mr Jordan) to go downstairs and take them. I think i'll read for a bit longer
This makes McLaren look like a meek lamb doesn't it? So much for other teams thinking about the sport's interest.
Renault did exactly the same when they were caught with McLaren data and Max let them off.
On one hand, I hate these arbitrary FIA decisions. On the other though, you can see the FIA point of view, given the pat 2 weeks. Also, teams threatening to pull out if they don't get there own way? Let them go, otherwise we end up with something like Ferrari getting under-the-table decisions in their favor just to keep them happy.
No one can convince me that a mechanic left a wheel nut loose just to see what would happen. Who ever it was, must be sick about it. I want 20 cars on the grid!
If you're lucky you'll have 26 next year
I remember that amount or near it in the early 90's. Some were pretenders others were condtenders, but it was fun
The problem was not the wheel not. There is a locking pin that is mandatory to stop wheels coming off and that was not used. It is a blatant breach of a mandatory safety rule for whatever reason and has to be punished. Fining them is not going to work.
Yeah, I accept that point, and this punishment is harsh. But it's their responsibility to have a safe car. It's like releasing a car into another - dangerous. Renault should not threaten to leave just because they have run foul of the rules.
Yeah but thats like saying giving LewHam the penalty at Spa last year will stop him cutting chicanes whilst racing, but given the same situation i'm sure he'd do the same thing again.
It's the right thing to do punishing them, but as you say fining them isnt the option, they should deduct points or do something that will actually hurt renault
I meant, thats the FIA's thinkig, but obviously it wont work
Okay, so you slowly diminish F1 in the process. A sport that has diminished itself with its ridiculous in-fighting over the past year. Banning Renault will do nothing for F1
STEVEN! When did someone say Heikki looks scary? I missed that comment!
I've only heard about him looking like Beavis
I disagree. I think the sport needs transparent rules that are enforced. That way everyone knows where they stand. You can't have the entrants saying when they think they can break a rule.
Rugby League in Australia is an example of this - they have rules on the book they simply ignore, it makes the game a farce.
Okay, why has Brawn not been excluded from the next race?
What did Brawn do?
Yep, good point. As I said these arbitrary penalties annoy me as much as anyone.
Why wasn't Kimi penalised?
Dropped a peice of their car on the track, much like Renault
A breach of safety has to be pinished and a race ban is a good way of stopping anyone else taking similar chances. Martin Brundle picked up on TV that they were having difficulty getting that wheel on. Then the car is released without the safety being used so either someone decided to chance it or didn't check it properly. We need to ensure mandatory safety procedures are followed and if that takes banning a team for one race so be it.
It's on twitter
oh yes, thats a good point.
They did not break any rule. A part on their car failed but they cannot be shown to have been negligent
Also a good point, did Ferrari ever get penalised for Kimi's exhaust?
No because that was in the days of Ferrari International Assistance
yeah, I was thinking about that one (Ferrari) all day yesterday.
I love that! I'm a Kimi fan but I realize what FIA actually meant. I just think exclusion is way too harsh, especially for the fans
I think its even harsher on the drivers, the team should get penalised not hte drivers
Wait, wasnt that just last year?
I hate exclusions too, and the timing (Valencia) is terrible. But what else really hurts the team? Certainly not a fine. It may have done if it was part of a capped budget.....
look back to 2005, Button and Sato missed 2 races including Monaco because FIA banned BAR....
After a vast amount of searching I have found the Heikki pic and it is still scary.
http://twitpic.com/c5bwq
Thats true, but then both their cars were found to have breached the regs, im not sure how else you'd deal with that, but things like when one driver gets in trouble, punishing both is harsh.
Here's an idea. Make Flavio be married to someone that fits his looks, not his lot in life. A woman that is grey-haired and 70 pounds overweight
Yikes! Looks like he should have horns :-)
The driver and the team are linked. I have never understood how people see a separation. If the team does a great pit stop the driver benefits so what's the difference? Ifthe team builds a great car the driver can win a world championship even if the car had nothing to do with him.
Yes.
Hehe.
Just thinking about it, they could have a system of docking constructor points. I think that would hurt them, especially if it dropped them down a fair way.
they did a pretty rubbish job then if Lewis won the WDC
Agreed
I saw a pic of him and his wife on a beach earlier today. Talk about beauty and the beast
The point is, of course, that the Piquet side had nothing to do with this.
The driver and the team have to be the same. If the driver gets points the team get them and vice versa. It doesn't make sense to me to split that
Then how do you punish the team? You said fining doesnt work, and race bans are anti-fan ?
They gave Massa wins at Valencia and Spa. What else could they do? They hamstrung McLaren by banning things from the car that they thought might be inspired by Ferrari's ideas.
Same pit crew. It was a pit crew failing.
Aren't the pit crews separate? Or is that just the engineering?
on one car.
so you're going to punish both drivers for something one guy in the pit crew did?
Separate sides of the garage when the cars are there, all one team for pit stops
Subtracting contructors points. If Renault were languishing around STR or FI, it would mean something
It will mean something, if they drop a constructors place, it means less money at the end of the year from Bernie
Right. In that case, yes, you penalise the team. As Steven said, it's a team sport. Safety has to be number one.
Depends how you look at it. To me what is happening is a sport that I want to see how it pans out. If you look on it as entertainment for your benefit then you are right.
It happens in other sports all the time. How many people have bought season tickets for football teams at ridiculous prices only to see a star player sent off after a few minutes of one game then banned for the next three.
In the end it comes down to th old saying. If you can't do the time don't do the crime. Of course if we had consistent application of sensible rules it would be better all round.
There is only one pit crew per team
But thats an incredibly school-class way of punishing them, thats like saying "all of class XYZ are going to stay in because jimmy was caught smoking behind the bike sheds"
surely thats completely unfair?
Banning that guy from the next race is hardly a punishment. Besides the driver knew there was a problem long before he got to the end of the pitlane because I knew by then. The teams have telemetry that measures everything so they must have known etc.
Of course, but i'm saying the only thing that effects a team is a race ban or constructor points loss, and from past experience we know they won't take away constructor points. You're going to punish PK for something completely unrelated to him?
I think the big problem is, we never know what's coming when we hear "under investigation". Ferrari could well have been banned for that fueling rig disaster last year. There needs to be much more clarity of rules.
looks like no one is penalizing Piquet for Alonso's loose wheel, it seems to Grosjean is the one who would miss that race :-)
Do you see the removal of constructors points as a penalty? I don't.
If I had been in the position of that mechanic and had struggled to fit the wheel but was convinced the nut was tight and would hold it but for example I was strugling to make the safety work if I knew the penalty was a loss of constructors points but my guy was win with a chance of winning the race what am I going to do? What is my boss going to tell me to do?
The wheel should stay on even if the safety is not activated so ifI am convinced the nut is tight and no-one is going to find out and there is no real penalty I am going to take the chance.
ah twitter. My phone client doesnt load messages back that far because twitter was am explosion of @ messages the last 24 hours
We need the rules written in black and white and applied by professional permanent stewards. That is clear.
There is no way of punishing the team fully without punishing the drivers, but race bans are even less fair. I think it depends who/where the team is in the constructors, but that money at the end of the season is very important to them.
That makes my earlier point perfectly. If by some miracle Renault make their car faster and the team do perfect pit stops theoretically at least he could win a race in a car he had nothing to do with developing. If it is OK for him to benefit from all that team work why is it wrong for a driver to be punished when the teamwork fails?
Can you see dropio?
They thought they were in with a chance of their first and probably only race win of the season. Do you really believe at that time they would not be prepared to risk a couple of places in the constructors championship aganst the possibility of a win. I would regardless what the financial difference is.
I really should go. See you guys later.
But this isn't the point, Renault aren't going to make the same mistake again are they? Nando DNF'd. The whole point of reprimands and penaltys is the FIA saying "DONT DO IT AGAIN!" so the whole concept of how much it will hurt them is benign.
See ya Paul
Greeting Sidepoddies! I have not posted in a while but in these dark times, I felt compelled to fill the void. So here goes, I have been entertained lately with my drive home from work and wanted to share it with you.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-4751final-jpg
Sadly I have not read anything out here since I stayed up reading all of yesterdays post until 1:00am. Reading these posts on my iPhone is not ideal...
Damn I love this site! I hope that Me and Mama Me (just trying that one out...I probably shouldn't) are back and zesty soon.
So that's it - hello and goodnight from Atlanta, GA.
If the penalty is not severe enough someone will do it again. Any deliberat breach of safety regs should be hammered.
Bye Paul
I am sure things will be back to normal soon.
But you think they are going to leave the pitlane early again without the wheel nuts being done up? And even if they did, the punishment was for going round the circuit on 3 wheels and have a tyre come off, will they do that again? No
Although im not sure Christine is up for being called Mama Me ;)
Scary Heikki on dropio
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/scary-heikki-jpg
But they thought the nut was on and the problem was that the safety wouldn't work so they decided to chance it going by what I have read. No-one is going to knowingly send a car out with the nut not done up. It looks like the reason the safety wouldn't work was because the nut was not properly tightened.
I think she may object to that
Henry's funeral was today
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8175812.stm
Safety is the priority of course, but then you get back to the, how can you punish the team without punishing the drivers.
I saw some stuff on that earlier.
The drivers are part of the team. They benefit if the team does something good and they suffer if the team does something bad.
If its something the whole team has gained from i.e honda with the race bans in 04? then yes, if not, then i disagree. Piquet didnt gain from it at all
You can't ban one car and not the other.
Anyway I have just seen what the time is and I need to be in bed.
Good night
Of course, i'm not saying you should. I'm just saying it's impossible to hurt the team in a way that will make them think and not hurt both drivers.
Night
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/biz-tech/shock-threat-to-shut-skype-20090731-e3qe.html
yeah saw that earlier, bit scary as skype is used so much.
How are you today Sean? sunny weather?
Unfortunately the weather is too sunny. It's supposed to be winter here. It's too hot.
Why not? I did not see PK's crew screwing their pit stop with what may have been a defective part on a tyre.
Why not fire the lollipop man instead? I mean if he can not see that the right front jackman has not signed okay yet .... Just make his dismissal piblic knowlegde while the poor sucker heads back to the factory or his home.....
But PK and Alonso share the same pitcrew.
It's a team sport. All for one, one for all.
By the time the driver leaves his box am I sure that he is pretty much committed to completing the lap or DNF the race Steven. It is not like he can do a U-turn or puit the care into reverse. That's apparently against the rules too.
That's the thing. I think a DNF was advisable at that point. Alonso DNFed anyway.
Hello everyone!
Nice to see you all the chatting again.
Quick question: How many stewards are there and do any of them have race exprience?
Hi, Kostia!
If I remember correctly, there are 3. Also if I remember correctly, race experience is preferred, but not a requirement. Almost all the stewards I've seen have no F1 racing experience, but some do have some experience in other formulae.
Lemme look for a source. I'm sure Alia would know this much better than me too. :D Why'd you ask?
you can read the biographies of the three stewards for the last race here
by the way, it's normal to have different stewards for different races, and this might be part of the reason why sometimes the decisions seem different from race to race.
Agreed.
Morning everyone. Hope all is well!
Good evening.
hi all
Business picking up! Hi, everyone.
Kimi's almost done with the morning loop of Day 1 of Rally Finland. Will post here his overall time so far once it's up.
My parents are trying to make me jealous of their view. It's working. I can see a wall from my house.
Nice! :D
If it's any consolation, your weekend has started. :) Ours is still some way off...
That is true, I am home in bed with my dinner watching the news. I party hard on a Friday night :D
Party like a rockstar... in bed. :D
Well, if Mr C can chatter his way through a hiatus, then so can I.
I did like the comment that you guys put the "hi" in hiatus :D
I guess it's because we were all "let's take a holiday" but both have jobs. Counting the hours though.
Jobs ruin everything. Stupid lottery not having our numbers.
When the working day is done,
girls just wanna have fun?
that's all I really waaaaaaaaaaaant. Apparently.
And here it is:
1. Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) - 33:21.7
2. Sebastian Loeb (Citroen) - 33:25.3 (+3.6)
...
18. Kimi Raikkonen (Abarth) - 36:03.5 (+3:41.8)
Aren't we all? At least it's Friday now. Weekend not very far off. Can't wait. :D
and here is a press conference with him, as tweeted by Kathi
http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/f1/uutiset.shtml/arkistot/f1/2009/07/923535
oh girls just wanna have fu-un. :D
thanks for reminding me ! :-)
for 2nd time in 2 days I forget to eat the cookie with my afternoon coffee
following on with the Kimi update, here's the link for the
WRC - world rally championship time chart
and you can go to WRC radio which gives live updates and things. they're just saying he's been impressing people.
they're about to get a kimi chat ....
if i didn't know better, i'd say they're trying to lure him over full-time.
oh, wait... :D
they asked him if he'd consider it and he replied something like "Yeah why not?" but obviously his commitments are elsewhere ;)
i misheard that i think. no kimi interview but WRC radio would be the place to get one
My holiday has begun! Huzzah! I didn't have to go to work today! WOO, and indeed to a lesser extent, HOO!
Now all I have to do is my packing. For a person who only ever wears blue shirts, tan trousers and tan shorts this process is pretty straight forward.
more tweets from Kathi, here is Kimi getting lost
http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/ralli/uutiset.shtml/arkistot/ralli/2009/07/923926
1) I am jealous. I am trying to make the next seven hours go quickly and they will not listen.
2) Will you be taking a bow tie?
oops :) blame the navigator. never the driver's fault :)
you should apply my approach: open suitcase. place suitcase on floor in front of cupboard. push clothes into suitcase. pack toothbrush, deodorant. close toothbrush. hardest part is always what music to take.
typo-suitcase ;)
Ah that's going to be a problem. It's open toothbrush season in Somerset!
The weather where we are going look delightful :)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/3073?area=Minehead
"sunny periods" really says a lot about the weather doesn' it.
That's only today for the rest of the week our best weather hope is "light rain showers"
I am packing the Wii!
The wretched gulfstream.
Am in the proper thread now. What news?
Mark Webber is getting a stamp from Aus Post. Clearly they don't require a WDC like the Finnish postal service do.
hehe. that's great. send me a letter :)
good weather for walking, if you're into that sort of thing. a walk followed by getting back to base and drinking warm soup.
Not much. The Daily Mash has a story about F1 in it. I think that's about it.
It's not safe for work or anything like it. And not suitable for a family friendly website. But if you want to look I'm sure you'll find it!
If it's anything like our postal service, it makes sense. Takes ages but gets there in the end.
http://www.stamps.com.au/shop/souvenir-sheets/mark-webber :D
Also a certain news organisation has threatened sidepodcast with legal action for our continuous mockery of it.
:)
And a pint of beer with twigs in it!
you mean i have to type the link? ;)
that was a link fail on my behalf, oops.
Ctrl C, Ctrl V ;)
morning all :) waiting for a driving lesson is the worst bit i find... just 15mins left.i got up extra early and everything.
Morning all,
Mrs. Goat called the travel company and they told us the holiday is still on! w00t!
So, hopefully I'll see you guys in a week - but in my absence:
(1) Steven, keep defending the Anti-Schumacher brigade
(2) Amy, keep repeating that Kimi will beat him
(3) Lou, keep repeating that Jenson will beat him
(4) Lukeh, give us a funny mash-up of some kind, be it photoshop or YouTube
(5) Christine, remember to put out the Panda every evening ;)
Later Guys!
just don't car racing games while you waiting. the driving instructor won'T like your new approach.
have a good holiday and wish the Mrs happy birthday (right?)
have a great holiday Gavin! :) don't worry, Jenson will beat him ;)
Indeed, will do - we are off to set up the party at the outlaws very shortly...
haha he would hate it.. i'm too much of a fan of 5th gear (as in the gear not the program) already ;)
you get to 5th in a driving lesson? wow. deliberately? :)
yay lesson time!
drive safe and don'T scare your instructor. not too much.
Where'd Stuart go? :)
Enjoy your holidays, Alex and Gavin. ;)
Not holding out hope for Heikki, then? :D
i think he was taken away by the gulfstream :)
Heikki's not his team mate ;)
I'll take it I'm free for some Timo and Seek then.
Morning all.
bbc have an article about what the drivers are doing on their summer breaks.
Trying to make my internet work! Having a few Mac problems today.
??
THAT woman is a missus now? Did I miss something?
It was suggested we try and control the defamatory fun and games we are having at their/his expense.
nah, just an expression, as far as I can tell.
the Hungary video from the formula1.com site is up. maybe what yesterday but i didn't see it then.
just slang
Since Stuart is confused, I will mention it, but only this once.
GMM.
Forgive me, all.
I'm going to win a trip to Monza, just so you know.
oops. the link is here
morning everyone. Laying in bed listening to sigur ros songs is relaxing :)
Shame to hear about Sir Bobby though :(
come say hello. i *might* be going.
Yup, twas up since yesterday. Not their best choice of song...
the prize is a trip for one so I'd need to find a friend when I get there. Because obviously I'l win.
Oh, just saw it now. A shame, indeed.
Hehe. :D You don't need good luck, then?
a prize for one? cheap australians.
Between winning that and winning the trip to Singapore I'll be rather busy. Don't need luck ;)
Really? When? Clearly this fellow's understanding of the law relating to defamation is about as well-developed as his moral compass relating to plagiarism...
From the BBC article Scott linked to:
First, the thing with KERS. Now, this.
Call me a cynic, but is it just me or is Williams still bitter about getting kicked out from FOTA?
Which is what Steven said.
yesterday, but the comment has been edited i see.
i guess it makes sense. they have people they have to pay, but are not allowed to do any work. it costs everyone money, but maybe Williams are more previous about it. are they next?
It was in yesterday's daily, but I think Mr C has taken it down. Redacted by request, it says.
kimi's press conference being shown now on WRC-TV
We always try and respect people's rights to have their spelling mistakes taken down.
But if FOTA are calling this cost-cutting, surely that means this is a leave without pay?
Next to what, exactly?
hehe. can you take all of mine down too? ;)
Very well, then. ;)
Does he say anything of interest beyond the mumbling? :D
:D
for FOTA maybe it is, but for the team, they probably have to reassign their staff to other roles because their jobs may not have this in their contracts.
Ha!
stage 6 of the finnish rally is about to start. the itinerary is here and you can listen to WRC radio to keep track and the live stage times are here
Mr M is of course very familiar with letters from lawyers, having only taken up the practice of quoting "the text from whence was ripped" (as The Smiths sang) after being in receipt of several.
Really? Interesting...
i was scouting around the web this morning, and discovered this (i'm not here btw):
http://www.f1network.net/main/s491/st96397.htm
does giggles have a barrister?
It seems to be the done thing.
That was a strange email heading.
Jacques Villeneuve is now following you on Twitter!
Then I realised it was fake Jacques. Phew!
Well I don't giggle for my own health you know ;)
All this talk of lawyers, etc, calls to mind the contract scene from A Night At The Opera...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-zR2pM_S5U
whoa. and this was some time ago, too. interesting.
:D
C'mon, wouldn't you like it if the REAL JV followed you?
I'd keep an eye on my mirrors, for sure.
question to Mr me - are you still on hiatus or do you need the mp3 fanswers from me tomorrow ? :-)
still on hiatus wolf (admittedly it doesn't look like it).
steven's doing his best to organise a radio show in our absence regardless though (#blamesteven), so if you sent them in, i'm sure they wouldn't be wasted.
btw "fanswers" is an awesome title for the series. was that a typo?
OK, will do tomorrow :-)
if it was, it probably won't be a typo anymore. :D i like it too.
Just read in the paper there that Hamilton's not gonna be on this series of Top Gear because the day he turned it, it was raining so they delayed it. Daily Mirror mind you..
Tis a true story, it was on Autosport a while back
Ah, I missed that.
obviously. :P
hi again :)
howdy! how was it?
hey :)
how was your lesson?
Hola.
it went really well :D i went all the way up to 70mph on a dual carriage way today :D and did some huge and terrifying round abouts... but all in all very very fun... if a bit scary :)
Yeeeeeeesh. I haven't even gone to 70 in any lessons.
wooop, sounds awesome.
my first experience of dual carriage way was bad, it was super windy and the roof box (triangle thingy) was acting like a rudder and shooting the car off to places i didnt want it to go!!
What i've mainly learnt today is -
speed can = fun :)
changing gear on a round about = terrifying,
dual carriageways = brilliant
3 point turns = not as hard as they were yesterday...
70mph is fun. It actually works out at higher than any speed limits here in Aus but sshhhhh. ;)
The best bit is you can take as many turns as you want (up to something silly like 10) because its now a turn in the road, not a 3 point turn :D woop
For me..
Speed - Yeah, it can be fun. I'm a big coward though...
Changing gear on roundabout - HATE.
Dual carriagewats - scary :(
3 point turns - I found them really easy, i'm sure in by next week or week after you'll be fine with them!
No it's still a 3 point turn. I did one on my test that had to be a 3 point turn.
Do they still do reversing round a corner? Because that is the one thing I found completely pointless. I've never wanted to do that in real life, and I've never seen anyone do it.
hmm, how odd, thats what i got told by my instructor :(
Also had to do that on my test, those were my 2 manouvres (although they cheated by making me bay park too. Blowtorchtastic.)
Although for me the first time I di a reverse around a corner right was on my test so I'm just gonna be quiet about them :D
yeah, its the thing i am worst at! :(
i was told it could be up to a five point turn in my test if i wanted it to be... not that i've had my test, that's just what my instructor told me :)
It could be then. The less said about my instructor the better to be honest.
:)
yep i did reversing round a corner last week... we do it a bit to get into our drive, but other than that...
Theres a section on F1 Helmets on F1.com....
Discovered something interesting...
"The visor, meanwhile, has its protective qualities evaluated by having projectiles shot at it at 500km/h. The impact marks must not exceed a depth of 2.5mm."
I knew they were tested but thats definitely encouraging, extreme testing!
The one I had to do on my test was at the bottom of a hill. When the test dude said to me "Park just after this junction, then reverse around please" I thought of a non-family friendly word I shalln't type out. But it's wierd because nearly everytime on my lessons, it was on flat round or going downhill which technically should be easier, and I'd never done it like that before. Yet it was honestly the only time I actually got it all spot on, checking for cars, getting timing right, right amount of turn...
After we did it my test dude looked at me and laughed, saying "You've never done one as well as that, have you?" and I just embarrassingly nodded. :)
You've never been in a car with me after one of my umpteen wrong turns, then...
My problem is that even though i can do them, i.e i can reverse around the corner, im usually to far away from the curb or end up in the middle of the road whilst doing it. I get the same result in hte end...ish
yay and there is another video on Jenson's site... :D
This morning i've been failed by the human race, no map website can show me a satellite view of a centre i'm looking for. BOO
Time to head over to my favourite bakery in the world ;)
Have to go get some shopping but it's opposite the local supermarket. It's just too tempting to ignore.
LUKEH DON'T GO. I have a question for you :D
okay so i now want one of these..
oooh very nice. however, £40 for a hoodie? uber expensive, although all team clothing is
I'm not surprised :D I wish my team had hoodies. I need a hoodie.
In other news, is anyone here a Mac wizard? My iMac has been having big problems connecting to our Home Hub all of a sudden – despite showing all four bars of signal it will drop out, and when I try to get it to reconnect it claims that the password is wrong (it's a lie, I tell you!).
i already have a few hoodies too :( however... if i hold on for a few months i may get one for my birthday... well, i may get some money...
We have a lot of Mac wizards, although I'm not sure if any of them are around right now.
Usually asking the question summons them though :)
if twitter bought doohickey:
IMO 40 pounds for a hoodie is more realistic than 25 pounds for a cap...
the center of a polo is a hole. there's nothing to see.
Heh. Then we'd all be Sidepodtwits though.
have you been drinking?
:D
alex is probably your man, however, i've been experiencing similar issues. i put my problems down to the "wine incident".
make your own twitlogo:
http://www.twitlogo.com/
but i think alex has gone on holidays today so might not be in contact much.
niiiiiiice!
I'm sorry, I went :( The power fo the sausage rolls was too much
I'm back now!
better in blue (drop.io nicked the background):
I thought of Sidepodcast and all the mac fiends here when I was watching the Simpsons tonight and Homer was trying to convince the record store guy he was cool buy talking about the US Festival "The what festival?"
"It was sponsored by Apple computers!" "What computers?"
I couldn't help but think in 2009 that line wouldn't make sense whereas in 1996 it probably did.
I saw your tweets about Fat Princess and wanted a longer review :D And then I wanted to know your PSN name because I only have one friend on there :( :D
have never used a homehub, but does this help, stuart?
You're not wrong - i wasn't following you for a bit - nothing unusual ;) talking about Kimi on WRC radio. nothing specific.
My tag is AbsolutionLukeh (Hey! a Muse reference! What are the chances)
It's very fun but very hard. I played a game online and it#s kinda wierd hearing british people shouting 'The princess needs cake!! We need cake!!' but it's very amusing, and addictive as hell. The first mission alone took me an hour to do... you should pick it up! It's really fun, as I say very addictive, completely mad trying to keep up with what the hell all your team are doing and all the fights going on but in what other environment can you say you were collecting cake to make a captured princess fatter in order to stop her getting saved? :P
I do really like it though. Looks lovely with the cel-shaded loveliness too!
you guys really are, one of a kind ;)
Trying it now, ta!
Beats me why the wretched thing has stopped working. The MacBook has no problems connecting from the same desk.
I have a slight addiction to downloading games from the PS Store. It only started once they introduced trophies and I got all MUST EARN TROPHIES. I haven't played anything in ages though. A new game might just fill in the next 3 weeks nicely :) I shall add you to my friends :)
Yay!
The trophies are all pretty much online-related, which annoys me. I suck at playing against real people. :(
me too, I much prefer one player games, or playing with friends which doesn't work when you've only got one and he doesn't own any of the same games. But now I shall have two! Yay!
Tommi Makinen thinks Kimi will kep a podium finish in his class in the Rally Finland this week, no pressure there then from one of the WRC greats :P
How has he done so far?
I don't realise how often I use Wikipedia until it goes down. I need a list of Father Ted episode titles. To Google I must go!
Are you following Kathi on twitter? She is doing regular Kimi updates :D
oopsy, I am following her but I haven't seen the tweets :(
*looks*
Oh no. Justin Lee Collins reciting The Impossible Dream on an advert, even simply speaking the song, makes me a sad panda :(
Apologies for triple posting but just saw 5live's tweet and to save the sanity of mr c/christine/other non schumi fans, if it is true them a storm is gonna be brewing....
If that is true I am going to be SO ANGRY. They didn't let Tim, so why let him?
because its not the team doing it.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77445
read the latest tweet, its about the current car
Hopefully 5live misunderstood and it's not the 2009 car otherwise there gon' be mayhem
New tweet
Seems not
Ah man. Speed is reporting FOTA are allowing Schumacher to test the 2009 car. :(
"FOTA Vice-Chairman and Toyota F1 boss John Howett told SPEEDtv.com: ‘I believe all FOTA teams have agreed to accept their request. The situation for Felipe is very unfortunate, and this is a sporting gesture which we are confident Ferrari will respect.’"
This has nothing to do with Felipe. They can't try and use sympathy to make it seem OK.
stop the presses, he's cheating right? meh.
also, what about williams and the fact the fia said in-season testing is banned?
ahh, who cares anyway. he won't live forever, i'll watch when he's gone. proper gone.
let me just get this straight right - he's never driven a 2009 car of course, but he's used slick tyres for years so he'll know how they are. And if Schumacher is, as people say, such an excellent driver, plus lots of people expecting him to simply sit in at Valencia with no real success in the car but simply to make up Ferrari's numbers, then why is he being allowed this extra day? Surely free practise can help him adjust to the car if needs be on the Friday? It's not like he can only come out for half an hour, he can use all 3 hours if they wanted to get him adjusted...
What a silly agreement by FOTA.
To be fair to Ferrari, I am not sure Toro Rosso asked for time in the car for Jaime Alguersuari. Who knows?
That is a really, really poor attempt at a defence by 5Live.
schumi will win in valencia, and again in spa. even if the stewards have to ban everybody else. anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional. todt will see to it.
I responded...
Because they were obviously willing to comply with the testing ban and the rules. Ferrari are using the sympathy card for Schumi.
Precisely. And as tinyjack says, What is the point of teams having reserve drivers, if you just drop in another driver and get the rules changed.
"It’s not known whether Williams and Force India, the two teams currently standing outside FOTA, have also agreed. Unanimity is required if it is to go ahead."
Go on Williams, do something to make me actually like you.
Here's some nicer news - Massa expected to leave hpspital Monday :)
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77451
Hooray! I liked in Rubens Portuguese tweet about how when he saw "Massinha" on his phone he thought it was Dudu :D
Quick question, it says its approved by FOTA, surely its an FIA rule so they still have to sign off on it?
No answers to include "they will anyway" pleassee :D
....you can feel the silence....
indeed
I'm too busy watching awesome people on Youtube to discuss Schumacher. :P
he wont win, but Jenson will.
I am renaming hundreds of .avi files. So boring :(
yay! :D
#f1happyplace
Lou makes an excellent point :P
exactly ;) only this happy place will become a reality :)
Yikes! Saw Lukeh's tweet about He Who Shall Not Be Named getting to test.
am very angry but must get ready for work. So:
1. WHAT? GRRRR!
2. Hi everyone!
3. Bye for now.
:)
1.Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out
2. HELLO!!!!!
3.Goodbye!! have fun!
You're talking about Voldermort right?
okay, i'm going to canterbury to go shop now. have a lovely afternoon everyone.. and just in case anyone wants to know who is going to win the next race... it's Jenson ;) bye! x
#f1happyplace
bye!
Have a fun afternoon too! :D
...or his team mate who I think would enjoy it just that little bit more than usual ;)
That would be awesome! :D
Jenson is wayy far ahead of Rubens so any of them winning would be awesome of course, although that's the case for any GP as a Brawn fan. Jenson winning = good for his championship bid, Rubens winning = good because Rubens beat Michael :D:D
Legard is describing F1 on the BBC site using a swing.
Hm.
tis the wierdest thing ive seen in a while
space shuttle is landing in about 50 minutes.
video is available from CNN or from NASA
awesome, thanks for letting us know
Uhh oh England. 2-1 already.
:D
You won't be laughing when we bring in Super Bell.
#sidepodspace
The shuttle is coming in to land. The landing will be in 25 minutes. I see Scott got in ahead of me. Thanks Scott
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Is there anyone else here watching the landing or am I just entertaining myself?
I think I am.
Are you not sure?
I have no audio and can just see some people behind desks. It could be anything!
I am
Ah, now I see a map.
THee is not a lot to see or here because they have just gone into a period of loss of signal with the shuttle
It is at 194,000 feet
800 miles to go
14 minutes till touchdown
is this is:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/NASA-TV-HD
??
How long does that last?
that was a terrible comment!
is that what you're watching? the nasa site doesn't work on a mac.
Try http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
Select the other viewing options tab on the right and you should find a player to suit you. Live is only showing a map just now
A few minutes. It's because of the speed through the atmosphere causing aplasma to form arounf the heat shield
They now have radio contact and told the shuttle to take GPS
4900mph at 143,000 feet
got ya. cheers.
You got video?
The ustream video has a picture of the shuttle already
i've got a map on nasa, and the florida skyline on ustream.
ustream has the shuttle:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/NASA-TV-HD
is nasa behind?
I have the map on NASA and the shuttle on Ustream. You can get a lot of variation on these feeds. I have seen me have two identical feeds open and have 2 minutes difference between them
ahh yes, a long way.
we can watch it twice :)
Shuttle looks really nice on ustream
Speed of touchdown will be 220mph or nearly as fast as Lou
never seen this before. only the launches.
Will people have heard the boom they are supposed to hear? When does that happen?
Yes Ustream showing the drivers view through the HUD. Hope they stick with that it's the best view you get
According to Joe last night about 5 minutes ago
space is cool.
Excellent! I like this better than the launch.
He is a fireman and every time they get loads of 911 calls reporting explosions. I guess they happen at different times at different places
The landings are more fun I think
that lady whoever she is, has a very soothing voice.
I just love thet they point the nose down then pick it up at the last few seconds
Probably Candrea Thomas
Ooooh i liked that landing shot
Main gear touchsown
Nose gear down and chute deployed
Yay it's back from space :D
I would like her to read me bedtime stories. I would sleep well.
That was so good I am going to watch it again
Wheel stop
:D
6.5 milion mile mission? blimey
I love the way the rudder opens out to both sides. That is a really neat design idea
There are certain things in the world that make me go wow.
This is one of them
Probably due a service
"So how much mileage does your rocket have?"
What happens now? Do they get out?
Bear in mind it has down quite a few missions like that
They sit there for ages while trucks arrive and they take forever to get out. Probably half an hour. Then 6 of them will do interviews while the Japanese bloke who was up there for 6 months spends time with the doctors to help him get used to gravity again
It would be SO wierd
I must check ustream for future launches and touchdowns. THe screen is a better size and th picture quality is better
damn. 50 minute meeting just finished :( well at least they're back on earth and safe
A guy I went to high school with always wanted to be an astronaut, he was one of only two New Zealanders to go to space camp in 2002. Last I heard he got a scholarship to some American university to study aeronautical engineering. It'd be pretty cool if he made it and one day I could be like "that guy in space, I know him"
someone in the chatbox said it was a HD stream. no idea where from though.
they get by the minute they're on board, so they're making the most of it ;)
It had an HD logo on it earlier
keep in touch - he could give a SPC shoutout and that would beat all other shoutouts!
Tough for someone from New Zealand to become an astronaut. You need to be an American citizen to be a NASA astronaut and all th other partners in the ISS are struggling to get their own people up there.
Dan Brunell knows one of the women who is a NASA astronaut.
Thermocam - in black and white
I always wonder when I watch them sitting there for so long. What would happen if there was a problem on landing? How quickly could they get there?
It happened on Thunderbirds, they got their pretty quick.
Thanks Jon
Facebook tells me he is now doing postgrad studies at Columbia University in New York. Clearly he has done more in the last 6 years than I have :D
:D
No Worries :D
yeah... but does he have a hashtag named after him?
But you don't want to be an astronaut
I dunno.
Stalking Heikki is pretty cool.
winner! :D
hi, everyone. :)
Hi Journeyer
yeah, the US doesn't even have a Grand Prix, why would you want to be there? ;)
this is a good point. I'd like to not get a lecture about wasting my degree everytime I ring my mother though.
because the jobs are better than italy :)
I just love that NASA uses nicknames on the radio calls
hullo.
Saving it for a special occasion?
i did just hear "chunky" then?
Well go an be an astronaut then
And even after that, you go to space wheres theres not a GP there either. Whereas you're sitting at home with people apologising to you via hashtags watching grand prixs at silly oclock. I know who is the winner.
i don't that suits Amy's degree?
I wonder if we'll ever see an F1 race in space in our lifetime... :D
I am not sure which one is called Chunky.
Capcom is Dex because his nam is Poindexter
I'd love to live in america....if it wasn't for the fact that they don't know the meaning of "National Health Service"
Hopefully it's Commander Chunky
There is no atmosphere in space so it is just like being at a lot of the GPS
Exactly. No Finns in space either. That I know of.
Podpanel moment! :P
you mean TIm or Neil? you're taking your NZ status too far.
neither do we? ;)
:P
There are no Finns and I don't think there ever have been. You could be the first
ouch!
Amy would be the first Finn in space? Wouldn't the Kiwis lay claim to her too?
ah but you don't have to pay £1000's each year for health care
How long do I have to spend in Finland to become Finnish?
I wish they had stuck with the view through the HUD. About 5 missions afo they showed the whole approach from that view and it was so much more interesting getting the drivers view
I am shocked you don't know. When we all move in with Kathi we will find out
Go to get their space suits off
yeah i loved that. was that the daytime one? you might be able to find the landing video later in the multimedia section, from different cameras
I thought you just had to cross the Finnish line? ;)
And on that, im going out to buy a clipboard. Back later.
I only normally watch live stuff but I will have a dig around and see if I can find that
I bet theres not too many people in the world who can say "I had to readjust to gravity"
Every time I look at the side view of the shuttle I think it looks like they have out the crew hatch too low down
i had about 10 different shots of a takeoff once. never bothered with the landing.
next shuttle launch scheduled is targeted for August 25, and it's Discovery to take Big Macs to the spacetronaughts on the ISS
every Christmas dinner ;)
I bet the re-entry and landing hurt when you have had no gravity for six months. I wonder how they would do a Mars mission. You can't have a pilot land when he has had no gravity in months. That could get messy
:D
replays coming up on nasa tv. you'll get the HUD replay for sure.
I didn't know it was taking Big Macs. If they did KFC I can see Amy becoming an astronaut
Alreafy start in HD on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/NASA-TV-HD
correct link: nasa tv. you'll get the HUD replay for sure.
as for big macs, yeah might have made that bit up to spark interest in the space program.
Already
much better quality. thanks.
:D
I probably have been told the answer to this but I have forgotten and I'm sure you will know - how come no one has gone to the moon in such a long time?
Mr C found it earlier
Cost
because they're sick of rock collecting.
They're not racing the Soviets anymore.
Any or all of what we said, basically. :D
how steep is that angle?!
and there is only so much cheese one can eat?
Damn recession! ;)
They first went as part of the cold war macho thing and took insane risks because the technology was nowhere near safe. Once they had been a few times people objected to spending money to go again while they had all sorts of domestic problems and Vietnam going on.
The glidepath is 7 times steeper that a conventional plane but I can't remember the angle
Despite the risks, only 2 Apollo missions failed to land on the moon, right?
:) they're still scared of that washing machine on skiis that's up there.
Only one 13
Makes sense. And now they are all like 'the moon, bah! lets go to Mars' or something?
from NASA: "As it aligns with the runway, the orbiter begins a steep descent with the nose angled as much as 19 degrees down from horizontal." but that's not it, is it ;)
The Apollo mission numbers are a bit screwed up because they decided that three guys could not be killed on simulated launch test AS204 so they decided that was Apollo 1 even though there was no intention of launching it
The glidepath is the rate it drops against horizontal distance travelled
Wasn't there the one before 11 that burst into flames? Or was that not Apollo?
Ahhh! That's what I was looking for.
HUD video of STS 94 - only one I can find so far
Apollo 7 was the first manned flight and it orbited the Earth
8 went to the moon to try out the basic flight plan
9 orbited the Earth and took the lunar module(LEM) up and practised extracting and docking it
10 did the same but round the moon and went very close to the moon surface with the LEM but was never intended to land
11-17 except for 13 landed on the moon
That was AS204 which was later renamed Apollo 1 but it was only a simulated launch. It was never intended to leave the ground
It had to be 13 that failed to land. What kind of a coincidence is that.
I'd be kind of annoyed if I was one of the dudes meant to be on 18-20.
The crew was Virgil 'Gus' Grissom who was th second American astronaut to go into space and I think the most experienced astronaut the had
Ed White who was th first American spacewalker
Roger Chaffee
about 1 in 17?
One of my favourite books as a kid was a book on "Scientific Marvels" that my dad got for his 10th birthday in 1958. It blew my mind that everything in it that was so old and out of date was so high tech at the time. There was a whole chapter on space that ended with "hopefully in our lifetime, man will set foot on the moon"
Jim Lovell the commander of 13 was on Apollo 8 that orbited the moon and was offered to Armstrong as an alternative to Aldrin who was an awkward character for 11. So not only did he miss out on commanding his own moon landing but he had already missed out on being on the first one
nothing to do with shuttle. partial email from a friend of mine about going to a music festival in australia. this would be really disappointing.
1-6 either never flew or were unmanned. 8 then 10-17 went to the moon so were liable to that fault
Given the risks they took it is amazing there are not bodies on the moon or in a capsule that missed the moon or Earth and still flying millions of miles away
NASA to the shuttle
We are a few minutes from running out of ammonia on the bravo system
I assume the ammonia is used for cooling.
hometime for me folks. have a good weekend :)
See you later Scott
Hi all
Did Doohickey not load right or is this a stripped-down, low graphics version for the hiatus?
Everytime they say KSC (Kennedy Space Centre) I think they are saying KFC.
#blameamy
Doohickey is good
I'd say give it a refresh, mine looks fine.
Ah yes, that's better
How weird
css file probs hasn't downloaded.
who goes on a hiatus and does some programming?
Astronauts are coming out in a minute or two
Thought there was a 'things to do before we leave' list ;)
Coming out?
Have they told their parents first?
I thought the doohickey was the only thing you loved :D
i can't have more than one list. otherwise you need a list of lists. ask amy.
True :D
Apparently all the astronauts bar the commander have already left and are in that odd looking thing beside the shuttle. Commander now leaving
cheeky!
How are we all
I've had a tough day but Friday afternoon is GO, so am now good
i was miserable, but space is FUN!
If only there were weekly shuttle flights but there are only about 6 more and that fun is being taken from us
All those trucks and some guy is walking along trailing wheel chocks behind him
:D
Same here. VERY tough day, but hey, it's the weekend! :)
When are they going to start with the Orion thingys?
They are doing some tests on it but not sure when it will fly but if you leave the question on the wiki I will answer it on my sidepodradio show.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/sidepodspace
Until it flies though the Americans have to fly to the ISS in the Russian Soyuz. It seems off grounding the only vehicle in the world that is capable of delivering large items to space. Nothing else comes close including the new vehicle
ooh, I shall next time I'm not in non-wiki-friendly Chrome.
Does Chrome not like the wiki? I thought Chrome was supposed to be really good
These people who run space seem to be unkind to the fans
They have to have a different vehicle to go to the moon and beyond and the American tax payers don't want to fund parallel programs. They need to start racing the shuttles and get sponsorship and some better TV coverage with live timing etc.
Riiiight, am back with a new fangled clipboard. Woop for me.
Wasn't the shuttle landing cool? How are we all?
Chrome does not like the wiki at all sadly.
Don't they know who we are?
We need more shout-outs!
That was the 23rd flight of Endeavor and it did 6 million miles on this one. That all adds up to a lot of mileage
right, I did it in Chrome anyway because I'm too lazy to change browsers, so of course everything is italicised. If someone less lazy than me wants to fix it that'd be swell ;) ;)
Italics have been removed
It's official, Steven Roy > Chrome :D
Take that google
To be accurate which probably isn't necessary given the subject matter it was Gavin who made thepoint first
Astronauts on the tarmac
The commander is nicknamed Roman because his name is Polanski.
Why should anyone pay GMM for information they have taken from someone else without paying them?
Cool. :D
As far as I am concerned sidepod radio is only delayed by two weeks. Now that the management have clear given me total authority in a completely non-ambiguous manner I see no reason for it not to happen.
So people get your shows ready. If you need help with anything just ask in the comments and I am sure someone will have the answer
Perhaps he quoted Mr M's article word for word? It is contestable in court, though, I would think.
The management. :D
Press conference just starting
Press conference was brief to say the least.
It was fun. Thanks to everyone. Won't say much because we want to see our faimilies.
That was pretty much it
2 minute presscon? Kimi would love that. :D
Proper detailed press conference will probably be in two to three hours.
So ends another shuttle mission.
70mph. Is your driving instructor insane letting someone with your experience drive at that speed?
You have watched F1 for how long and it has taken you until today to figure that speed is fun
It never has been a 3 point turn. Even when I passe my test when the world was in black and white you could take more than three. Jon it can't be a 10 point turn or you would be going backwards. Has to be an odd number
how did i not think of that?
i intend to watch them all.
:D
You went backwards and didn't know? That's worrying
Wow. Very good point, that.
have always done it in three, clearly :)
Urgh. Not good. I went to get a drink about an hour ago and i fainted, have been resting on the couch :(
August 25th is the next scheduled launch which I think is the Tuesday after Valencia
What is it with all the fainting. Yesterday Gavin sneezed and nearly fainted.
Mr C have you checked to see if the doohickey has a virus that it is causing fainting?
Shame he is not here
Ahhh man no. Get that rest.
Remember to keep your feet high.
fair enough!
you should know that giggle's show is scheduled to go up sunday anyhow. but i suspect he'll happily make another one.
*hides*
I expect he will do another 100. There is no stopping him now
I first used an Apple computer in 1991. I spent all my time trying to explain to people what it was
Why does anyone need a list of Father Ted episode titles? I know I am going to regret asking
A 19 year old who has never driven an F1 car round a corner has shown that there is no need for pre-event testing at the last race but they are letting someone with his experience test.
CHEAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Off to wind up Schumacher fans on twitter. This is gonna be fun
:)
You get the idea....and you've obviously never seen me try to do one ;)
There is a very good explanation for this over here:
http://www.f1network.net/boards/read/s85.htm?85,10720951
Don't read the whole thread, it's not worth it. But go to the post by Parminio_USA - that is worth reading. And from a McLaren fan, too.
Enjoy yourself. I'll keep an eye on ya. :P
Also, I would've understood your point if it was only the FIA who agreed to it. But even FOTA said yes. So they're all willing parties here.
the fia have agreed too?
well, not yet. but do you really see the FIA saying no?
but, yeah, their consent is needed before Ferrari can do it.
nope.
on the other hand, i was surprised FOTA said yes - and pretty quickly, too.
luca's the chairman?
true, but it was howett who issued the OK. besides, these guys have big egos - they could've said no if they wanted to, right?
in effect: what would Ron do?
Ferrari are doing this because Schumacher will be more competitive. Typical cheating Ferrari and Schumacher
he's not part of fota?
no-one's going to veto this. what would be the point. they'd just find another way to cheat and fota would look bad.
I'm off to not talk about Schumey because i really couldn't care less!
Bye
see ya jon.
If Ferrari are allowed a test day everyone should have one
yup. but what if he were?
if that's how you see it.
To be honest, I'm surprised FOTA didn't ask for it. They could've.
He would agree to keep the teams together after all the work he has put into it
Interesting. I was thinking he'd say no as a matter of principle. But you do have a point.
he'd agree. see previous point.
it took him less than 24hrs too cheat, how else can you see it?
He paid $100 million to keep the peace when he had a great case. He is not going to object to this.
it can't be cheating if everyone agreed to it.
BMW are going to give a couple of their young drivers a test in December even though they are pulling out
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46530&PO=46530
he's changed the rules to suit himself.
he's broken a fundamental rules of f1 in 2009. one of the rules i actually most object to. no-one else gets this, because their not cheaters like he is.
That Rossi guy looks pretty handy. Clive of F1Insight brought him up as a potential USF1 candidate in the near future.
There is a testing ban which Ferrari agreed to. As soon as it doesn't suit them they want special privileges. It's cheating. Everyone else has their back against the wall because if anyone objects they will be plastered all over the press with pictures of Massa after his accident with stories saying how heartless they are.
Did you think at the time Jaime was making his debut that STR should be alloweda special test day?
I just realised I haven't read Clive's blog in about a week. Sorry Clive
:D You might want to drop by - some interesting articles there.
I will. His writing is so good that I normally go every day
There don't seem to be many Schumacher fans on twitter
It is a Friday night. My #f1 feed is only showing regurgitated news.
did you convince them all they were wrong?
Evening. Counting things makes my head hurt.
he tried, but nope.
counting crows? :D
IIRC, the testing ban was something the teams proposed and agreed to between themselves. Is it even on the FIA rulebooks?
It's a fairly reasonable request IMHO, for a driver to have driven the car before he tries to do compete with it. The big difference between this and Alguersuari is that there are 4 weeks between races this time, and Ferrari have better resources than STR. Plenty of time - and money - to run Schumacher in a 2009 car. Or maybe it just didnt occur to them to ask? :p
It's not cheating, changing the rules, or anything like that. Ferrari made a reasonable request, and the other teams allowed it. Probably could've got a test session out of it, as Journeyer suggested, but ho hum.
The constant loathing of Schumacher is pretty tiresome, it has to be said. Yes, he wasn't perfect. He did some pretty rotten things, but to focus on that is to overlook a supreme talent, a flawed genius. Surely any true F1 fan can appreciate that, even if they disapprove of some of his antics? And surely they can see this as a great opportunity to see Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen and Schumacher, all fighting each other with absolutely nothing to lose?
counting cheeses and pallets of packaging
yes. i shall find it for you.
mmmm... cheese... :D now you've made me hungry. hummm... :P
mr c's probably right - they wouldn't have needed to approach the FIA if it wasn't in the rulebook.
Schumacher fans are involved in a personality cult. For them it is a religious experience. You cannot convince them they are wrong. All you can do is point out he is a cheat. I am still waiting for someone else to pick up on #CHEAT
almost forgot - hello, simon. :D
Has this been mentioned? Mark Webber is live on Inside F1 on the BBC F1 website
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8178564.stm
I has had a bad day, peeps. :(
Any way we can help, Scott?
okay, confirmed on April 30, 2009:
"Teams will be allowed to carry out three one day young driver training tests between the end of the last event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year. Drivers are eligible only if they have not competed in more than two F1 World Championship Events in the preceding 24 months or tested a Formula One car on more than four days in the same 24 month period.
Teams can also conduct eight one day aerodynamic tests carried out on FIA approved straight line or constant radius sites between 1 January 2009 and the end of the last Event of the 2009 Championship."
Ferrari have a nominated reserve driver with experience. This is about making the car and driver more competitive. Ferrari have two test drivers. It is up to a team to prepare their reserve driver.
The reason they are using Schumacher is because he will be faster. Nothing else.
If a 19 year old kid who has never turned a corner can get in and do it why can't the most successful driver in history
ahh, awesome.
Don't bother, I'll take your word on it. Doesn't change my point though.
The opposite could be said of (some) Schumacher non-fans :p (I'm not levelling that accusation at anyone, just to clarify...)
And hello Journeyer :)
Seesmic is great until it sucks
"Sorry, but posting your message failed.
The server reported a problem while trying to process your message (Error #500). Please try again later."
Ouch.
nice. :D i want one. ;)
Any good news for a start?
it doesn't catch the image? odd.
Massa will be out of Hospital on Monday :)
You don't wanna know about Schumi news today.
i already know.
soz. you can't quote images. i'll put it on the list.
still for sale - has been since sidepodcast started.
i wear mine with pride.
Kimi did pretty well today at Rally Finland. Scott in Italy said the WRC folks were singing his praises.
the shuttle landed. it was ace.
Find me a group of Schumacher fans prepared to argue facts. There are none.
When he parked his car at Monaco I was involved in a discussion on another site. The anti-Schumacher people were discussing speed changes and steering inputs and the Schumacher fans only ever said - but Michael wouldn't do that.
i've always hated the guy, i've never pretended otherwise. we started this place because he left f1. we were so happy.
Allowing Schumacher to test, when Toro Rossa did not even attempt to get permission for Jaime to test is blatant discrimination. I hope the FIA turn down the request. Firstly Ferrari should have suitable replacement drivers, in the case of one driver not being able to participate in the race. Dusting off MS and putting him back onto the track is wrong, but to allow him to test beforehand makes it worse (as there is a testing ban). My second criticism is that opportunities like having to be the replacement driver should go to the young guns. These guys struggle to get onto the threshold of F1. It could showcase their skills ahead of a new season.
While I do not like making lots of rules, possible one rule to make is each team should have one development driver (a young person without or very little F1 experience). The alternative is that the FIA identifies suitable young talent (say four drivers) and if a team has to replace a driver one of these guys is draughted.
Ferrari using MS is a cheap shot at getting publicity - it does not advance F1 as a sport.
Twitter seems to have more anti-Schumacher fans than pro-Schumacher. No doubt when those that aren't interested in F1 beyond the personality cult find out he is back things will change
There were more pro-Schumi folks yesterday. Race weekend will be VERY interesting.
That statement is much too general. Some people may not be prepared to argue facts, but as I said you can say that about anyone who is much too firmly entrenched in their opinion to entertain anything which contradicts it. You can find just as many anti-Schumacher people who aren't prepared to argue facts.
While I don't want him back it is their right to put who they want in the car if he is qualified. But it is utterly beyond reason that a 19 year old who has never driven an F1 car round a corner can be dropped in at the deep end and the most successful driver in the history of the sport needs a test first.
I sort of disagree - there should clearly be an identified replacement driver. Jaime actually did very well considering all the pressure and his lack of experience. One driver even predicted this ahead of time, that was Fernando.
But why? I can understand not liking him, rooting for the other guy, whoever that happens to be. But hating him seems extreme. He's just a sportsman, after all.
????
You're fighting a loosing battle i'm afraid Simon
I will argue facts all day long with Schumacher fans and I have done for years. The vast majority are utterly blinded by something like a religious experience. I had people argue that he would no park his car at Monaco despite the fact they saw him do it because- Michael wouldn't do that. When I pointed out that he had shoved people on to the grass at 200 mph or rammed drivers to try to win a championship or pushed his own brother into the pitwall I was told- yes but this is dfferent. Michaal wouldn't do that.
The man is a cheat and always has been. He won the F3 race at Macau by ramming Hakkinen in the second heat because Hakkinen won the dirst heat and he couldn't beat him fairly.
Please feel free to argue with any of my facts or would you prefer to argue about the illegalities of the cars he drove, suspicious stewards decisions, Bernie negotiating his team moves or the special deal Ferrari had with the FIA that let them veto other teams technology etc? Any facts you want to argue I am here.
I agree totally Rich. I think you misunderstood my point. I am saying that it jaime's performance proves Schumacher does not need special privileges. I tought he did a great job.
there is no battle. schumi ruined my enjoyment of f1 on so many occasions it doesn't matter. and now he's ruining it again.
you cannot convince me otherwise, because he did what he did for all to see. and time will not take his malice back.
He's a sportsman?????
If you are going to post stuff like that please put a warning in front of it. I nearly choked on my biscuit. Sportsman?????????
this is my point, theres no point trying to convince you otherwise.
♥
as a schumi fan, i would agree with that assessment.
agreed.
what amazes me are the number of people who find this surprising? we've never said a good word about him in 2 and half years.
The point is no Schumacher fans are fight the battle. Over the past couple of days I have posted dozens of pointsand none of them have been answered and all you ever get is Schumacher fans saying I can't understand why you hate him. Simple read what I write and tell me where I am wrong. Deal with the facts
yeah but it was never this anti-MSC
true. but he was never planning to to drive in a race.
Because he wasn't driving and therefore not cheating. As soon as his comeback was announced I said it would cause trouble.
Yesterday on twitter I tried to explain to people what would happen.
I think that's because we actively try not to talk about him.
Loving this hiatus by the way, Mr C.
People are entitled to an opinion. Some folk are for him and other against. My own opinion is that he should stay retired. As a "sportman" he is a poor example simply because he only won when every conceivable circumstance was created to ensure he won (including even over his team mate). His winning was more due to overall advantage than any other factor. This means that when he was competing in F1 it was by definition not a sport. The antagonism towards MS was because he cheated like at Monaco despite having such privileged. As consequence of these in my book he has not established himself as a great driver merely a successful one.
he makes me soooooo very, very angry.
i'll stop now. i'll come back after spa, or whenever massa returns.
Can't we just all agree to not talk about him? It's a subject that everyone has an opinion on, and one that no-one will change their opinion on.
For the past 2 days theres just been constant arguing and bickering, i hate it
This is why we started after he left. This is why we now would very much like to quit.
Can't we just make it an unmensionable for the next few weeks? Just like when the politics was grim
I will agree not to talk about him as soon as one of his fans argues one point on the facts or points out where I am wrong.
I am utterly sick of years of Schumacher fans saying i can't understand why you hate him then ignoring every point I make only to return later and say exactly the same thing.
Schumacher is poison
You can't quit. The only chance you have of getting a panda is if we can convince Mr C. If you quit we can't convince him.
*covers eyes from the q word*
He is going to be all over the TV etc. Unfortunately he can't be ignored. Then we have to have the excuses when he rams someone off the track in Valencia
But you know that won't happen, it just won't.
And i am utterly sick of the anti-msc rubbish, it's gone from being about him in F1 to comments that are totally personal against him.
What comment has been made that is personal about him that is not about F1?
Welcome to the world of the F1 fan on the internet until 2006.
He's been dehumanised, like he's some demonic being.
i cannot see how it won't happen. could you imagine live commenting any of the sessions in valencia?
we just need to decide what we want to podcast about instead.
So is everybody else. It will always be the same because it has always been the same. On any internet community you will find lots of people hugely anti and lots of people hugely pro, and from such things are flame wars made.
Find a comment or do you have no facts to back it up. This is exactly what I am complaining about
I certainly have not made any statement that is anti him as a person, actually I thought he was quite funny impersonating the Stig on Top Gear. I am objecting to his return to F1 as a "sportsman".
This is a temporary thing. You have to stay. Don't let him drive you from the sport.
Ok, possibly a poor choice of words... :p
I dont mean it to be a battle as such, just trying to understand...
Arguing that he wouldn't park his car is stupid. He did, theres no argument! It was a stupid thing to do, and of course because he's Schumacher and it's Ferrari so he got away with it unpunished. Didn't he?
His racing was no worse than Senna, or Hamilton these days. Senna is deified amongst much of the Motorsport community. (tangent: ramming Villeneuve in '97 was as stupid as parking it in Monaco. I can't beleive he wasn't penalised in any way for that!) As to car illegalities, well I'm fairly sure that any F1 team - no, any team in pretty much any motorsport - pushes the limits of legality, so I don't see your argument there so much.
No. Ferrari's special deal with the FIA was appalling. As is dodgy stewarding (although there are instances where stewarding went against him as well. I think stewards generally are pretty poor in F1, I don't think its always a big conspiracy). I don't know if Schumacher personally negotiated with the FIA for those things, or whether he was possibly too busy with driving the car, but whatever.
My point is that if you look at Schumacher's achievements - even allowing for his sometimes unsporting ethics - he was (is?) a brilliant driver - as I said, a flawed genius. To argue that he's perfect and did nothing wrong is just naive, but to argue that he's the devil incarnate and only got where he did by cheating is equally wrong.
I should clarify that I mean everybody is sick of the discussion, not the anti, per se.
It's not just MSC thats making them against F1 at the moment!
What you are complaining about is people who are pro-schu and are blinded by this, i can see what he's done wrong, my point is, why does everyone still moan about it (which will continue for another 2 weeks atleast) when nothing is going to change?
Senna you can have. Hamilton has not put anyone in a wall. Hamilton has not put someone on the grass at 200 mph. He is a bit impetuous at the start of races occasionally but he is nothing like Schumacher.
This is the one point I don't get with Schumacher fans. They always argue that his achievements mean he was special. He cheated for many of the wins so the number of wins cannot then be used to justify his status.
If you understand all the cheating that went on you must be able to underatand why people hate him
Sidepodcast has also been careful in dealing with Lewis as well, ensuring he is not promoted over everyone else. This provides both balance and opportunity for more opinion. There are twenty drivers, each has a story and a style we should be discussing some of the other guys. The whole MS thing is tedious so I only started watching F1 again when Fernando starting to challenge him for the title.
Possibly we could have one-day when the daily thread bans anyone discussing MS.
Yeah i do, but i also understand that there are more important things in life to care about
= Bliss
My point is you have again made a statement that he is somehow been demonised but have not produced a single comment to back that up therefore none exist and your view of what is being said is wrong. You can of course prove me wrong by producing evidence as I did when my viewpoint was challenged
I wasnt saying people arent entitled to an opinion, but hate, really? Surely hatred is reserved for truly awful people who have/had a negative influence on the world. Hating someone for driving quickly?
He didn't just win when every conceivable circumstance was created. And to my mind, the fact that he (and his team, yes) went to the effort to create every conceivable circumstance (blood tests at pit stops, ffs!) is fairly admirable. IMO, of course.
We are all here because we are F1 fans. It is therefore reasonable that we are not going to be happy when the biggest cheat in history returns and immediately starts cheating.
Here's a nice piece of news - Tim has taken his first WSR pole at Portimao.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77463
On a high after his F1 debut? Not bad at all. Can he convert it into a win, though?
He ruined the sport for 15 years
I haven't seen anyone object to blood tests or pit stops or maybe I missed that. We object to illegal cars, illegal manouvres, illegal deals with the FIA etc
I am not sure how you factor in the huge advantage (a team mate that was not allowed to compete), having the best F1 team in the history of the sport and the ruling body favouring you. You cannot establish that he was a "flawed genius" because the participated under a different set of rules and it looks like he is going to get the same treatment again. He also attempted to extend his advantage by cheating and was caught out. Hardly the stuff of heroes.
Dislike. Support the other guy. I can undersand this. But hatred? I don't get how anyone can have such a strong emotion about someone, just from sport.
Steven i'm not having this conversation, because these discussions is what i've tried to spend my whole day avoiding, and say that i'm wrong because i haven't showed you comments, i care not.
You all hate him, nobody should be hated. Fact
Exactly, There is so much more to care about in the world. If you all put this passion to some good use you'd get some amazing things done.
Is it me or are things a bit fraught here?
It's been like it all day.
How are you today?
We used to get sonic booms from Concorde heading out over the Atlantic. Twice a day. One was 6pm I think. It was usually a muffled boom because it was some distance from here.
Just a bit.
But feel free to talk about something different.
To even hear one in my lifetime would be something, never mind twice a day every day.
That is what I expected
There is things in life that can make you hate people. But I agree in the fact Schumacher should simply be ignored, disliked, disregarded from your point of view if you're not a fan of him
Search for the word 'hate' over the past 2 days, these are the comments i'm talking about
I was citing it as an example of the way he created the circumstances which allowed him to dominate.
He raced before Ferrari :P
I'm factoring in his debut at Spa, finishing 2nd with a car that was stuck in 5th gear, numerous wet-weather drives where he simply drove away from the rest of the pack in a relatively poor car. He didn't participate under a different set of rules, he pulled a good team around him and the team worked well. Yes, he had an advantage. But he helped create that advantage. That is what I find admirable.
Agreed.
The Schumacher fans don't like their man being criticised so they make false allegations they can't back up. Just like it used to be.
And they wonder how I hate him. Look what he has done to this site. His return to F1 is poison
Is it possible to put in a word filter for the phrase "schu"? Even better, perhaps a search/replace "schu" with "ralf"?
(Also, the image of "me" vs. "him" in an epic battle of pronouns makes me smile. *fades back into wallpaper*)
I thought they were not allowed to be supersonic that close to land
Evening
How are you jackie?
Evening
I hate him being in F1 nothing wrong with that
Yes, you see the filter box, simply type '-schu'
lifes great.
Now runs off to do exactly the same realising he just came up with an idea.
Sidepodcast is a hideous place to be right now. Am sure I said in the daily post that we were to be nice to each other.
I am actually going this time and I hope to see less Schumacher angst when I return because if people are worried about us quitting, this is what will drive me away.
A bit bemused by the hate word on here in truth
Evening Jackie
can we close comments?
:(
what exactly does that mean?
I propose a ban on any Schumacher talk starting from now.
no more comments.
the end.
michael ruined it.
It sounded like very distant thunder. I'm not sure how far the sound of the boom would travel so it could have been quite a distance away.
agreed 10000%
False allegations? Who here has made them?
Unless they've done something exceptionally awful (and I'm trying amazingly hard not to invoke Godwin's Law here :p)
Anyway.... dunno if anyone has mentioned. Kimi seems to be doing rather well in Finland...
Oh right. There's no answer to that
I mentioned it earlier - comfortably in the top 20 - and not in a Ford or Citroen, either.
WRC folks are singing his praises. They do badly need a star other than Sebastian Loeb - and that's assuming they don't lose him to Toro Rosso.
You were doing what Schumacher fans do and ignoring the points that were made and using others in an attempt to bypass the argument
He raced before Ferrari in a benetton with illegal launch control and traction control
His debut at Spa with Andrea de Cesaris as his team mate. Schumacher supposedly did incredible things to qualify 7th. The fact that de Cesaris who no-one would rate as anything special actully finished the race in that position is ignored
He did participate under different rules as you acknowledged in your last comment
Hi Jackie
Hi Steven. How are you?
I hate George Bush, it is opinionated and personal. I should be entitled to that view. I possibly should not unduly influence other people to share the same opinion. In the case of MS he was statistically the most successful driver in F1 history a point that is difficult to counter-argue. But did he compete on an equal footing with his peers? To be great you almost need to overcome some adversary. People could not understand why I said Lewis was not great - until this year I had no litmus test to assess his greatest as he was competing in the best car and seemed to have team advantage. Last weekend provided that evidence - he did not have the fastest car (Webber did) but he won the race. Repeating such success (like Fernando did when he got his championships) is the real test. In my humble opinion MS has never actually had the opportunity to show greatness. He seemed not to handle starting a grid in midfield and when under pressure seemed to crack up. Why I rate Timo so high is he can start at the back of the grid and still score points in car that is only a midfield performer.
When will some other country stand up and take on space? {Comment #54}
India launched the Chadrayaan-2 probe last year, if that counts. To be honest, though, I think we'll see more multi-national co-operation and fewer jingoistic trips (until some of the middle-income countries get out of recession, at any rate).
There will be less. I promise. Schumacher must now be a banned topic it appears
Please, everyone STOP! Now! I can't take this any more! :(
Apart from unmentionables fine
Ah tis the weekend, a chance to relax, unwind. Is there any decent motorsport on the telly this weekend?
ALMS race tomorrow, BTCC sunday. Should be good
Rally Finland comes to mind, but any TV coverage that'll get won't be live. :( Let's see what else is on...
Ooooh, ALMS. Where?
Not sure. I haven't checked yet
Portugal, that new track
No I wasn't. And for the record I'm an F1 fan, not a Schumacher fan.
I think the consensus is that people would rather not talk about Schumacher. I'm not fussed, so if you wanted to continue this elsewhere, let me know. I think it's unfair to continue here when it's clearly getting up people's noses :)
I may give the BTCC a try
BTCC coverage is awesome on a sunday.
Is it on Eurosport?
Evening all, is it safe to be here now?
An American series racing in Europe? That doesn't happen everyday.
Is this the same event with WSR?
ITV4 I believe
I think we are at defcon 2 now :)
Yup, you're in the clear. Evening.
ish ;)
how are you?
How are you today? {Comment #741}
Very happy. The JobCentre did something useful yesterday by putting me in contact with a voluntary work agency. The agency phoned me this afternoon to say they've found a suitable voluntary vacancy for me and they'll phone back early next week to confirm when the company in question wants me to come :D
Worth watching just for the Clios. I love watching those things race, it's chaos :D
yep, it's like 6 hours long. tis awesome
You not working Alia?
I went to Thruxton a few years back, they had a huuuuuuuge pile up within the first 3 corners.
It appears nobody told the clio racers that the tortoise won the race ;)
I had to miss a race for dinner at some point. They had to make that race the one with the comical crash where everyone went on the grass on the straight.
Not too bad thanks, was just going to get my hard hat before commenting :-)
Good to hear! :)
I have no interest in arguing Schumacher. I have had years of it and am only sorry his return has had the effect it has. I only ever argue to stop things being said that I object to or to ask for evidence. Clearly people want this site to return to what it was before his return ruined it and that suits me.
But feel free to talk about something different. {Comment #743}
How about "Why is it so difficult to get a decent translator plug-in for Google"? It's taken me six goes this evening to find one that works, and I'm not entirely happy with the one I've got now...
Its LMS not ALMS
We simply need to agree to disagree, I am always disagreeing with Steven, it makes life a bit more interesting but for the sake of peace (and to hopefully restore our beloved community) lets discuss other stuff. I am rally hoping Kimi enjoys his Rallying experience.
Heheh. :P No need for that. :)
Evening all!
That explains it. :)
Evening, Chris.
hehe, you know what i meant ;)
Hi Chris
they're all the same series and cars, so dosent make a huge difference realy. its just a name
Scott, have you tried the Race Pro stuff yet? :)
You said ALMS. :P TBH, I prefer them over their European counterparts. I dunno why, though...
They're all the same cars really ;) dosent make a huuuge amount of difference
I feel the need to blog about something .. don't know what ,but something.
Not the same teams or drivers though.
Oooh i did that a while back, it works really well
Lots of F1 topics out there available. I'd personally suggest something about Toyota - lots of talk about 2009, but even more talk about 2010 and beyond.
I'm thinking safety
Sounds good, theres a great thing on the F1.com site thats about helmet safety, give it a read, tis good
Is there any decent motorsport on the telly this weekend? {Comment #779}
I don't know whether this puts it into the category of "decent", but Scott Mansell is going to be a substitute driver for the Galatasaray team in the SuperLeague race this weekend.
Yup, that's a good place to start.
lol are you really arguing about your interest in arguing Schumacher? :p
Yeah, I get that from time to time. I invariably get half way through writing something, then get bored/distracted by something shiny. I don't blog enough :(
Scott Mansell? How's he related to Nige, Greg, and Leo?
Damn .. oh well was going to write about HANS devices and safety testing but if that's already on F1.com there's not much point :(
Ohhh. :(
nooooo, quite famous in club circles, he used to race an F1 car in euroboss.
oops, sorry :(
heheh. sorry, never heard of him. :D
Don't apologise Jon, thanks, it saves me some work :)
okay, plan B I might have an early night :P
boo!
I'm tired!
Oh no, I seem to have managed to stall the conversation :(
So you have any ideas or none at all?
nah, i'm distracted - looking for this old video i should have, but can't seem to find.
I was eating a kitkat. Apologies
:P
I'm doing the dishwasher and want some pancakes afterwards
He is not
Well I was quite liking the idea of writing about safety but I'll have to think of something else now. This is, I quite like looking at some F1 stats but don't want it to look like I'm treading on Gavin's area.
Yo may have a different take on it or a different audience
Probably my fault. I nipped out to the local shop
Hi Jackie.
Gavin is on holiday so there is a gap in the market, and even if he does object he's not here to say so, so write it anyway.
#blamesteven ? :D
Ah but I'm not into plagiarism :)
If you want to do safety you could do
driver equipment
circuit safety
safety car
Sid Watkins
Circuit medical centre
Particular accidents and what the causes were
I didn't go up to 70 on any lesson because I didn't want to seem reckless.
Of course, as soon as I passed and was driving by myself....
Busy roundabouts are annoying. Navigating them is one thing, the main problem is finding a space to get on to it.
I never did 70 on a lesson because my instructor told me to slow down 20 times an hour. Apparently I had a heavy right foot.
I have done the safety car before, also covered the medical team car. I'll give it some more thought tomorrow when I'm less tired. :) .. thanks for the suggestions though.
Evening all (more afternoon for me...)
I think we are at defcon 2 now {Comment #792}
What's defcon 2? I saw a reference to it in a Terry Pratchett novel earlier today and now here, but before today I'd never heard of it...
Hiya *waves*
Well defcon 1 is when the drop the nuclear bomb so defcon 2 is a hightened state of alert but 1 off total meltdown
You never saw WarGames with a very young Matthew Broderick?
Some of you may not have read back through the comments but apparently I am completely in charge of sidepodradio. I am sure that is how Mr C phrased it. So I have unanimously decided that to cheer up Mr C and Christine sidepodradio Sunday will be in August 16th.
Mr C was worried about having to spend all day on F1 but looking at the schedule there is not a lot of F1 stuff on it so I am planning to go with the existing schedule.
There are still a few slots availabe so if you have an idea for a non-F1 show pick a slot and its yours. I know there will be holiday issues from the original schedule so if anyone can't do a live show that was planned let me know.
We want to make this a fun day so lots of lighthearted stuff would be appreciated.

For Alia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEFCON
I hope you're having a nice summer. I'm freezing right now
No problem. If you need other let me know. Ideas I can do. Blog articles not so much
Which TP novel? He's one of my favourite authors
American military slang for defence (or I suppose defense) condition. It is a bit like red alert, yellow alert etc
There is something about that film I love
Hi
You not working Alia? {Comment #798}
No. Haven't been since part-way through January (long story, still waiting for part of my salary plus other legal breaches on employer's part). It didn't help that not only had all the library vacancies gone by the time I entered the dole queue, so had practically all other jobs (paid or voluntary) that I had the ability to do in my geographic area!
Rubens on Twitter: "just spoke to Felipe..better and better...the good thing is that he is feeling like driving...yessssss" :-))
I can't leave voice mails trough Skype right now, but can send an mp3 in an e-mail. To whom I send it?
nice!
At least we're not copying his previous tweet about what he was doing for the world doping agency people :-)
Awesome!!
His tweet berfore made me laugh too
??? *runs to check*
Saw it. That was a very random visit. Part of his job, he says. I say, too much information. :D
Why are the shuttle landings more fun? I've not seen a live one (either real-live or internet-live) but I'd have thought the big firework would be more exciting than the gliding thing?
Oh dear, sorry to hear that. Good luck with the voluntary job then, hope it leads to something permanent.
Scott Mansell? How’s he related to Nige, Greg, and Leo? {Comment #841}
I think I may have just managed to confuse myself. I thought for some reason that Nigel had three sons (of which Scott was one), but he actually has two sons (Greg and Leo) and a daughter (Chloe).
It turns out that Greg is completely unrelated to the Mansell F1 clan. Sorry for any confusion caused.
Scott, you mean. ;)
I can't explain it and all logic should suggest that the launch should be better but I love landings. The only thing I an think of is that although you have the countdown before the launch from the spectator's point of view nothing in happening where with the landing they are counting down distance and height. You also have the fact that you know a man is flying the thing and it is not a pre-programmed sequence.
And landing can't be called off 5min before the touch down ;-)
Well defcon 1 is when the drop the nuclear bomb so defcon 2 is a hightened state of alert but 1 off total meltdown {Comment #855}
Thank you very much, Jackie :)
There is that and the fact that you know it is touching down somewhere because it is a glider
Or as someone called it, 'A brick with wings'
You never saw WarGames with a very young Matthew Broderick? {Comment #856}
I've never seen WarGames and don't have a clue who Matthew Broderick is.
The rate of decent is scary. They occasionally show the landing approach from the piot's view point and that ground gets big very fast. I am sure the first few simultaed landings result in very big virtual holes.
Good evening. I've gone on holiday.
Ah ok, I'll have to watch one sometime then.
Don't tell me. You are not here
ahaha, i wondered how long it would take you ;)
how are you sir?
Definitely. There are only another 5 or 6 to go
:D
I'm not here - I'm in bed. Or will be, anyway,
Night, everyone.
Not only that, the aerodynamic efficiency of the Shuttle is really bad as a plane (they had to find a compromise between being a good glider and not being destroyed on re-entry, apparently). That's why it lands so fast, almost twice as fast as any plane; and probably is the same reason for the steep descent.
So I have unanimously decided that to cheer up Mr C and Christine sidepodradio Sunday will be in August 16th. {Comment #857}
This is great news! Gives me time to make my programme now ;)
Night Journeyer
night journeyer, hi alex
Even more time for me to avoid having a radio show of any form :P
Man, I need to come up with another excuse?
Nigght Bye people Aleex Journeyer.
More time to convince Amy to change her mind, Steven. ;)
I'm not here. Really. :D
this is kimi on autosport, taking F1 language to new territories:
It's glidepath is 7 times steeper than a plane and it's touchdown speed is 220mph
no I am here.
Seems so RG, I have a vague memory of you telling me I needed a to have a show but its vague so I'm more likely to be wrong ;)
good thank you!
Yes. I mean no. We need to do this to cheer up Christine an Mr C. I am sure if you don't want to host a show yourself you could co-host one with someone.
You and James can co-host a show. Perfect
You and Amy are doing the breakfast show. Just not at breakfast time
But co-hosting with someone will inevitably mean two weeks of planning before I do a runner to the Seychelles and leave all the work to him.
I'm cool with it - as long as Amy's on board. But we have zero material right now.
I think we're better off with a more appropriately titled show - like The Afternoon Stretch or someother.
I'm not sure they are sad and need cheering up, i don't think it's quite that simple
You just have to discuss a few ideas. It doesn't take much work. Do what I did and pick a subject (OK christine picked it for me) and put up a wiki page asking for suggestions. Keep plugging it till you get some and there's your show.
You have two weeks to get material. Tell Amy to open the show by asking you a question and that will fill ten minutes
It's not that simple but this will help
not really. See you later.
Am I that prolific a talker? :P
Will need your help to convince Amy, though. I tried it through email and failed miserably. You'll do better than me, I'm sure.
Anyway, REALLY off to bed now.
The music hour? with non-stop music, hardly any work needed ;)
I knew you weren't here
Alex thought about that first.
bye alex (and journeyer again :-) )
and I have to leave de computer to my sister, so it's bye for me too
Don't you remember Amy's podpanle questions when she became the only host to get the tick tock?
There are a few pre-recorded music shows and you only have to do half an hour. Just put something between the songs to keep people entertained
Which TP novel? He’s one of my favourite authors {Comment #861}
Witches Abroad. The context was, "Asking someone to repeat a phrase you'd not only heard very clearly but were also
exceedingly angry about was around Defcon II in the lexicon of squabble."
I like most of the books Terry has written. He has a brilliant wit :)
Night Alex, Journeyer and Guille
bye sir.
He does, even if you don't get what he's parodying (sp) it's still funny. Not sure how many more books we'll get :-(
If you like 80s films featuring teenagers hacking into the US gov't computer system only to find a game, with no idea he is taking the world to the brink of armageddon, you'll love it. It isn't as dark as I'm making it sound, just a bit of fun really - it was aimed at teenage viewers I think.
Although according the description of Alex's show there won't be much music ;)
Pre-recorded is better for me becuase I'm bound to forget and not be around at the right time :D
Ah good, thanks Steven.
Wait, am I reading right? Sidepodradio is (sort of) back on, just not this weekend?
Sounds like me right on the nail. Though replace 'forget' with 'mysterious illness' and add a 'get' there as well.
Hi Alex, bye Journeyer
Indeed.
Rubens on Twitter: “just spoke to Felipe..better and better…the good thing is that he is feeling like driving…yessssss” :-) ) {Comment #866}
This makes me feel really, really happy. It's good to hear Felipe continues to be on the mend :)
It's like the line in the film The Longest Day where a stressed officer is offered a cup of tea by one of his men.
Officer asks what the bleedin' 'ell good a cup of tea would do.
Soldier says "well, it can't hurt, sir"
Unconfirmed, but confirmed by Steven.
You sisn't think it was just goingto disappear did you?
I can't keep up with all the comings and goings, now I know why Mr C struggled with his list.
You mean I am not official enough for you?
Christine,
Just sent you an e-mail. Nothing important
It may have been in A Bridge Too Far, come to think of it.
Erm, ah, oh
*Taxi for Seychelles*
Make sure you agree the price up front. That kind of journey on the meter could cost at least £30
If I offer to co-host some sort of show, will that persuade you? :D
I've updated the wiki page, because I heart the wiki.
Just a heads up. Anyone with an aversion to THAT MAN should avoid f1.com for the time being. His mugshot is the header image and the background has been turned red.
Fine.
If I'm allowed to do it from the Seychelles.
Headline on Autosport: "Basso on top in Madeira"
I thought it said "Bassano".
So does RG. Do a wiki show
He can;t be away again already
Whilst I heart the wiki there is no way I can talk about it for a half hour ;)
There's so much you can talk about
edtiingeditting, editingAt least we’re not copying his previous tweet about what he was doing for the world doping agency people :-) {Comment #869}
Good to see WADA are stepping up testing of F1 drivers out of competition as promised... ...though perhaps not the ideal subject for Twittering!
1 x tshirt purchased, sir.
It was noted at the Meetup.
The Timo show?
Is this an automated comment? ;)
:D
Not yet
I keep getting confused by the MSN home page. Their sport section keeps having headlines about Alonso's move, turns out there's a footballer called Alonso too. I think sport should be like Equity, you can't have the same name as someone else :-)
Interesting idea. It could work
Its a killer when you use sky sports news as a radio. Must be worse for the player called Fernando Alonso.
Scott, you mean. ;) {Comment #876}
Confusion is the word operative...

Twitter is no better. It turns out that the head of the Vatican's bioethical thinktank and one of the Force India drivers has the same surname, which has made figuring out which tweets I need bother translating a bit more difficult than initially expected. It's not even as if the Equity solution would help me...
Evening all. Most displeased by the news that MSC is to test the F60. Much Tremayning was occurring when I read the story.
He is a banned subject owing to much discussion earlier. Christine has banned all discussion of him. He does not exist.

Does he get fan mail intended for F1 world champions and Oxford bus drivers*, then?
* - Yes, there is a bus driver in Oxford called "Fernando Alonso" as well. According to F1 Racing, he ended up getting a free car when Renault learned of this.
Hmmm, this gives me an idea...
Deed poll name change to Timo Glock coming? You'll have to legally change your username to TG as well. Scary times.
I was thinking Romain Grosjean, keeps things simple. Plus I like the name, Romain.
Time to head off. Night all.
Night sir.
Night Lukeh
Might as well go too, see yas.
Night RG
Ah. OK. Sounds good to me. Bit like Voldemort then.
The atmosphere picked up the second he was banned.
Thank god for once my laptop charging gave up at that moment.
Sorry I'm late.
I remain on holiday, am not here and am going to go to sleep.
I'm sure you are all glad I shared :)
so there is some value to this message I can tell you that despite being in sumerset for a ood few hours I have had no cider. I have however seen a really big moth.
Did you get a picture you could dropio?
sadly not. I did just go and try and find him but he's clearly moved on. So many light bulbs so little time.
Ah go on. You'll pick up the accent in no time.
I've just been reading back through the comments. It went a bit far didn't it.
Ah well, time for the f1 happy place. I'm very pleased to see that Massa is much improved and feeling like driving again.
I can't believe the speed of his recovery
I can't say why he's getting better so quickly as it's a banned subject :D
I am disapointed that I have nit yet had the chance. Things just didn't pan out that way.
Hello folks
Nice to see I haven't missed anything around here.....
Nothing's been happening at all, it's been very quiet.
I hope Christine and Mr C are okay :(
Hi guys!
Been away from F1 related sites, but Teletext realised my worst fears.
Moving away from those thoughts, I had one of those ideas to improve safety in F1, but I don't think anybody would like it.
My new crackpot idea, would be to paint evey single part underneath the bodywork either dayglo yellow, or dayglo orange. I realise the aesthetics of this, but had Felipe seen that spring coming towards him, surely he would have taken some form of avoiding action. Marshalls would have been aware also. Clearing tracks of debris would be a lot clearer.
It has been quiet for the last hour. I think it is because Giggles and Gavin have gone on holiday and Christine and Mr C are unsuccessfully trying to stay away
I don't think it's necessarily a daft idea, I mean most of the bits are hidden usually anyways to limit ugliness. However, I'm not sure luminous is necessarily easier to see at those kinds of speeds than a solid colour. Also would you just have to paint them? I'm not sure I'd like paint flaking off all over my moving parts in my car....
At least I don't have to think up some excuse to get out of doing our radio show anymore ;)
They might have more luck if we continue to be good.
I have no idea how practical that is but it doesn't sound ridiculous to me. I saw an interview with one of the marshals and they watched the spring bounce around before he hit it. Barrichello was about 4 seconds ahead of him and they said they watched it and on the bounce it caught Massa itwas heading off to theside of the track
It is not a simple thing to do but for many parts I am sure something could be done
I did say crackpot didn't I? I'm using SPC as my Brainstorm Sounding board!
I am planning sidepodradio for August 16th so you don't get out of it that easily. If you read through the comments Mr C clearly says that I am organising sidepodradio so it is going to happen
Last night we were good and particularly Mr C hung around for ages
The aluminium bits in theory could be anodised in almost any colour you like
I'm messing around with you. I was quite looking forward to it actually :) It probably suits me to have some time to get my skype working at any rate.
There are a few slots available ifyou fancy a second show.
I like the idea about our phone in show not being about F1 in the current climate so if anyone has alternative subjects let us know or put them in the wiki
How did it get to be that time? I thought it was about 9:30
I'd like to do something for the Sidepodradio event. I make a Podcast every so often. However, it's all music, no talk. Not very F1 related. And anyway, Alex had that base covered.
Yeah, my day has evapourated. Just back from the cinema. I've been to see that film about John Travolta being a train robber except I couldn't really take it seriously. I just have mental images of him in a fat suit dressed in drag.....
You, have put that end song in my head now! Booooo!
Mr C said one of Alex's shows is going up on Sunday so there may be a music slot available. I think a few music shows are a good idea butnottoo many. Maybe you could get together with someone and co-host a show on something. James and RG are doing that, Journeyer and Amy too.
I can't remember the last time there was a train robbery film. That's a bit 1960s
It's a remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. I liked the original, Alison not being able to take the new one seriously doesn't sound promising...
More hijak/hostage suitation than robbery really
I noticed. I'm quite glad they've been around actually. Gives me a bit of hope.
I've been around on the Internet for long enough to have been involved in some fairly unpleasant community break-ups, I'd hate to see SPC going the same way.
Howdy all, am back
I think what'll happen is that SPC will stay on in some relm, it just probably won't be F1
I had a good time. I can't really take anything seriously. Particularly when someone's trying to be hardfaced and I'm imagining them in a moo moo.
What but this place exists purely for my educational enrichment
And it shall, just for something else, potentially.
I would hate to see this community broken up over some temporary problems.
Nxt season we have maybe four new teams and at least 8 new drivers. Once we get the politics out of the way in a few weeks and Massa gets back things are going to be much better. I think this could be the most interesting winter in a long time
By Winter you mean January to March right?
If the subject matter changes the community will break up. Although we discuss many other things here the reasin we are here is F1.
I think pretty much as soon as the season ends or even before there are going to be all sorts of personnel moves etc to keep us interested
Yeah but i'd much rather a change of subject than to know that Mr and Mrs C aren't happy
I don't really get what's going on. I mean I gather it's about Mr Cheaterman. I guess I'm just too young to really get why he's quite so awful. The way I remember it was that he lost 2 seasons in a row, looked a bit washed up and retired to save face. The very next season Ferrari was back on top without him and he looked like an even bigger egit.
I agree. Unless it's football.
Of course
There is obviously no point in them doing it if it doesn't make them happy but there are implications of changing the subject
It's not just about him. He was the final straw.
There are many people who contribute a lot to the experience of SPC, who make it a really welcoming community. F1 has to be the centrepoint of it. I haven't been listening long, but I would really miss it if it went away.
Okay :(
Oooooh. Having come to the (shocking and frankly quite frightening) conclusion that I may have to educate myself, I turned to wikipedia. Look what I found.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/2287699.stm
A very disparaging article by none other than Jonathon Leggard written way back in 2002.... Did we know he'd been "motor racing correspondent" all this time?? Why does he play dumb when obviously he's been following the sport for the past decade?
Maybe all of SPC, not just Mr. C and Christine should go on a holiday just like F1 is on at the moment. Aside from Sidepodradio of course. Just a thought...
He has been covering the sport for a while but somehow if he makes a historical point it sounds like he just read it in a book the day before.
He is a bit like James Allen. James Allen is a really good writer and very knowledgeable but somehow he did not come across well when he commentated.
I like it here. So I plan to hang around. {ep[;e will ome and o with holidays but not coming here for a while I don't think would solve anything
I looked him up on wikipedia, it says he was motor racing correspondant 1997-2004. I was really shocked by that. He's always making little comments about how he's just learning and whatever....
