Wow, it's a new month already. Hasn't time flown this year? Unreal. By now you'll know that we're on hiatus, so this is your pre-scheduled daily post to keep the conversation flowing.

Apparently it is Yorkshire Day today, which is something I had never heard of. I like the idea of promoting places by having their own special day, though. Sidepodcast Towers Day sounds good to me.

It is also World Scouts Day being celebrated around the globe by those young people that like to do adventurous things and go outside and stuff. My only question is, do they still use woggles? Because I'm pretty sure that's the best word ever.

It seems it may be my new sign off, but remember please be nice to each other while we’re not around, because we’ll be even more miserable if we have to get back and wade through pages of nasty comments.

Have a good day.

There are many jokes i would currently like to make, but as i am potentially moving to Yorkshire in September, i shall resist.

Easily done. August 16th. Sidepodradio Sunday is now Sidepodcast Towers Day.

Do you have a job lined up?

  • Jon Waldock31/07/2009 at 23:26

Do you have a job lined up?

    Nope, University

  • startledbunny31/07/2009 at 23:27

I had no idea counties had days

I suspect it's yet another ploy from the Yorkshire Tourist Board to visit the area.

  • startledbunny31/07/2009 at 23:28

    Nope, University

Is it Huddersfield? or even Leeds? There's a great music scene in Leeds.

  • Steven Roy31/07/2009 at 23:28

    York St John.

    York is awesome. Fact

    That was a pre-uni placement

Not sure if anyone is interested... the 2010 IndyCar schedule was release a couple of hours ago and it will start at an undisclosed location in Brazil.

Agreed. Lovely place. Don't visit it often enough.

Did CART not used to go to Brazil?

  • Lukeh31/07/2009 at 23:31

I can't sleep. And I have to be up at 6 for work. bah!!

  • Pat W31/07/2009 at 23:32

Did CART not used to go to Brazil?

Yeah they had a few races on the oval in Rio in the mid/late 90s. This will apparently be a street race.

The other thing about next year is that as it stands, there are more road/street tracks than ovals for the first time in the IRL. Things have changed haven't they...

  • startledbunny31/07/2009 at 23:32

There's a great music scene in Leeds.

I know it's way off topic, but watch out for a band called Heads We Dance. been playing them for a while on my podcast, got a record deal recently.

  • startledbunny31/07/2009 at 23:33

Rio De Janeiro? Mark Blundell had a bad crash there once.

It is like they are going back to the CART format. So much for Tony George's all American all oval formula

I've been watching Twitter discussions about it. People want more ovals. New Hampshire (Loudon) issued a very pointed press release about being left off the schedule for the second year running, they are not happy.

I am not surprised. They were sold IRL as an oval series and no doubt the tracks invested accordingly.

I think so. I was trying to drift off watching The Office (the good Steve Carrell one, not the british one) in bed and usually it sends me right off, but tonight it's just so warm and stuff, and this is totally my excuse for randomly reappearing when mentioned.

Hehehehe. I also highly recommend Absolution if you're willing to listen to more, it's easily their strongest album (so far). Plus I tried my hardest to give as fair as a review as I could to give you an idea, as well as get a blog plug in here somehow.

I'll definitely give it a listen. I'd find it hard to give any Supergrass or Super Furry Animals album a fair review.

BTW it is coincidental my 2 favourite bands have Super in their name.

Asda would sell it cheaper though. Damn them and their alcohol offers. They are so tempting in Dewsbury that a certain famous Mum bought a trolley full of it whilst her Daughter was missing. Don't want to mention the name, but it's pretty infamous.

True. Some have questioned Cory's ability as President, but no one ever questioned her motives or intentions. That never happened before in this country, and will probably never happen again.

    And hi Amy!

This gives me an idea for a show for Sidepodcast Towers. Not that I have much time to put into it, but I would sure like to hear more about the Sidepodcast community. You're in Sydney -- I didn't know that. We're all over the place and it would be cool to have some sort of travel show, where people contribute one touristy thing about where they are ... ? dunno. needs work.

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:04

and by You're, I mean Sean.

Hmm, except I've been thinking recently about how hard it would be to show someone around where you live. I know people come to Sydney from all over the world to see things like the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and others, but when you're from here you take those things for granted.

And besides, Amy would have nothing to do for this show, there's nothing at all to see in melbourne. ;)

psssssh sydney is boring, you only have two things and they look the same in person as they do in photos :P

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:10

And besides, Amy would have nothing to do for this show, there's nothing at all to see in melbourne. ;)

    ZING!

It's true though -- showing someone around is difficult. But I've traveled a lot and the best things are often those things we take for granted.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 05:11

It's true though -- showing someone around is difficult. But I've traveled a lot and the best things are often those things we take for granted.

Yeah, it occured to me when I was somewhere in Europe and I thought it would suck to come from here and not be able to travel to here, then I realised that people go on holidays to Sydney.

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:12

It's true though -- showing someone around is difficult. But I've traveled a lot and the best things are often those things we take for granted.

I find it hard to show people around Melbourne even though I was a tourist here myself only 3 months before I lived here, and I quite enjoyed being a tourist.

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:14

We had a friend come from the UK and we drove around to all the "World's Largest" attractions that Alberta has. He got to see the world's largest:

    1. Ukrainian Easter egg

    2. keilbesa Ukrainian sausage

    3. perogy

    4. mushrooms

    5. baseball bat

    6. cowboy boot

    7. mall

Truly, a journey high in culture.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 05:15

    7. mall

Is that the one with the theme park and everything inside it? I always wanted to go there.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 05:15

I find it hard to show people around Melbourne.

As I said before, there's a reason for that. There's nothing to show. ;)

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:16

Is that the one with the theme park and everything inside it? I always wanted to go there.

Yes. West Edmonton Mall. It's pretty crazy.

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:17

As I said before, there's a reason for that. There's nothing to show. ;)

I ran out of time to see everything when i was touristy here!

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 05:17

    You left after a day?

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:18

the trick is to keep being touristy even if you're living there. :)

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:19

    You left after a day?

eheheheh. The Melbourne/Sydney debate is rather passionate for locals ain't it. Clearly until you have a Grand Prix, Melbourne wins.

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:19

So is this Sydney - Melbourne thing a friendly rivalry? Edmonton - Calgary have the same thing going.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 05:19

    Generally it's friendly. ;)

They had Mark Webber driving an F1 car over the Harbour Bridge once for a promotion thing. It looked spectacular. When we do get a Grand prix (which has been talked about, albiet briefly) we will beat every other race.

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 05:21

    Gotcha. ;)

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:22

I should have asked your advice for what to do when I was in Sydney. On my first day I went to Bondi in the morning, and then in the afternoon I went and saw the bridge and the opera house and then I was bored for the next two days. ;)

All tourists go to Bondi, I'm not sure why though. It's like Fosters beer. All foreigners (particlurly in England I think) think that is the pinnacle of Aussie beer. No local will go near the stuff.

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:25

I think it is because it gets advertised as the 'perfect Australian beach' with all your Bondi Rescues and your Bondi Vets etc etc.

  • Amy01/08/2009 at 05:26

Surely Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast wins this award? Honeymoon Bay in particular

    Get it delivered to work

I had a really annoying experience with my mobile phone last time. They will only deliver it to your home address. I told them, "there's no point I won't be there, just tell me when I can pick it up from the depot". They said, "we can't tell you that. We have to wait for us to deliver it and then we'll take it back to the depot and then we'll tell you".

    Madness!

Unashamedly sycophantic of me, but just wanted to say I LOVE sidepodcast, have subscribed since the beginning of this season, and love the format and everything

It's been a difficult season for me, I've been a Barrichello fan since 1991 (not an easy life, I can tell you) thankfully, the season has been more enjoyable than if I was Sidepodcastless...

My account number and password are saved in Firefox and I don't remember them, and Firefox takes 10 minutes to open and then when it does it stops responding immediately. The 'email me my password' link when I open the page in Chrome doesn't seem to work because I'm still waiting on the email.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 15:20

    When are your terms then?

It makes more sense here, because the year starts at the start of the year. I've just finished the mid year break, starting semester two on Monday.

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 15:21

ahh ok, that does make more sense.

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:22

I miss uni for the holidays. 4 weeks annual leave per year is not enough.

You're luck you get 4 weeks worth - we only get 3. :O

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 15:23

You're luck you get 4 weeks worth - we only get 3. :O

That alone would be enough to make me leave. ;)

Do you still get holiday loading?

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:23

    Night, Amy. :)

Quiet day, eh? Just the Concorde getting signed, that's all. And even then, it's barely registered as news - I guess because everyone expected it.

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:23

Do you still get holiday loading?

    Not sure what you mean?

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 15:23

    Not sure what you mean?

Here we get 17.5% extra pay in your 4 weeks leave. It's the law or something.

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 15:24

Here we get 17.5% extra pay in your 4 weeks leave. It's the law or something.

You get extra money when you aren't working?!

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 15:26

You get extra money when you aren't working?!

    :D

Possibly the best thing the unions ever did. I'm not much of a unionist you see, but I won't say no to that. It was put in to encourage people to take their holidays and supposedly be more productive when they are at work.

  • Sean Golding01/08/2009 at 15:27

You get extra money when you aren't working?!

And hey, it's Australia. We're probably the laziest country on Earth. Of course we get paid for doing nothing. ;)

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:27

    What the?!

Unions aren't really in fashion here.

hehe :) you should go to frome (i believe that's in somerset?). i hear there is a lovely pub called the frome flyer on Jenson Avenue which is worth a visit :)

i'm alright, better than this morning (i may have been to a party yesterday evening and may have needed time to recover) :) am currently sorting through photos and having a nice quiet day at home.

  • lou01/08/2009 at 15:43

    oh.. wow. that is quiet.

Concorde's been signed, so that's good news.

erm... yay! :) what does it mean for the future of the sport though?... still doesn't help with making Ari president :(

  • lou01/08/2009 at 15:43

Hi. I'm ironing, although it isn't working.

    wohoo! go ironing :)

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:47

erm... yay! :) what does it mean for the future of the sport though?... still doesn't help with making Ari president :(

that means there won't be any breakaway threats... at least until the end of 2012. it won't help or harm ari in this election.

  • Pat W01/08/2009 at 15:48

    wohoo! go ironing :)

Can you please tell my iron to work? I iron clothing. Looks good. Fold and put to side to do next bit. Creases magically reappear.

I think the solution is to not wait several days before getting around to it...

  • lou01/08/2009 at 15:48

I can tell you why the creases are coming back after you've folded them....

    Because you're folding them!!

  • Pat W01/08/2009 at 15:49

that means there won't be any breakaway threats... at least until the end of 2012. it won't help or harm ari in this election.

Not necessarily. If Todt gets in and stirs up trouble, which he will, it'll all kick off again by what, next April? Go Ari!

  • Pat W01/08/2009 at 15:49

    Because you're folding them!!

But I want to put them away in a drawer.

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 15:50

But I want to put them away in a drawer.

Sure the only things that need ironing are shirts/tshirts/trousers which you hang up?

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 15:51

Not necessarily. If Todt gets in and stirs up trouble, which he will, it'll all kick off again by what, next April? Go Ari!

Even if Todt stirs trouble, the teams are contractually bound to F1. So they can't really break away. They may use other forms of protest, but not a breakaway.

I am currently constructing a small booklet to fill in on friday that includes a page on every 2CV team and the drivers. I am the preperation king ;)

I am currently constructing a small booklet to fill in on friday that includes a page on every 2CV team and the drivers. I am the preperation king ;)

Very interesting, that... :D What would you use it for?

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 16:01

Very interesting, that... :D What would you use it for?

For background info, i.e if i'm told to go to XXX team then i'll know where the team is based (garage), their practice and quali times, and their drivers (with relevant experience), and other info thats relevant. plus any interesting people in the team i.e catering people, mechanics etc etc.

Club motorsport is very low key when it comes to the internet, so i may not know the teams and drivers until the day i get there, so it's for me to spend friday filling in!!

I'm even going to bind it, and maybe laminate it!

  • Journeyer01/08/2009 at 16:04

That's really interesting stuff. Lotsa dedication to the cause. :)

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 16:06

That's really interesting stuff. Lotsa dedication to the cause. :)

If it was a normal club day and there was 4 or 5 different series going on then i wouldn't put as much effort into it. But because it's a 24 hour race, plus 20 minute warm up, plus 2 hours of practice, thats 26 hours of stuff, and for a series i've never had much contact with, i need to hit the ground running

  • Pat W01/08/2009 at 16:12

    no room for hanging

Chicken Saag with extra chilli I think.

    Naan or Chapati?

    Decisions, decisions

  • Jon Waldock01/08/2009 at 17:47

Chicken Saag with extra chilli I think.

    Naan or Chapati?

It's got to be Naan surely? There's not a great deal better than eating curry by scooping it up with naan bread.

  • Nikki01/08/2009 at 17:47

Chicken Saag with extra chilli I think.

    Naan or Chapati?

    Naan. always naan.

  • Lukeh01/08/2009 at 17:48

Oh my god. I am in complete awe.

did anyone grow up watching, or remember, the show Bodger and Badger? I have made a startling discovery regarding the legend that was Badger. He has gone on to bigger and better things.

Kudos to you Badger. I wonder what happened to Bodger.

  • Bassano Clapper01/08/2009 at 17:48

Ooh, what's chapati? We always have Naaan.

Flatter, quite thin. Not as heavy

  • lou01/08/2009 at 19:00

It's kinda ironic i find it disgusting when people put mint sauce on curries. WHY. WHY DO THAT.

this could be cause i don't eat much meat but... i've never actually tried mint sauce, i take it that it's nice, cause lots of people tend to like it.

  • Lukeh01/08/2009 at 19:05

this could be cause i don't eat much meat but... i've never actually tried mint sauce, i take it that it's nice, cause lots of people tend to like it.

Traditionally it's only on lamb like Alex suggests. But i just prefer it on every meat, probably because my tastebud is mega sensitive, if something has no real taste or something it tends to make me sick (don't ask, but it does)

With curry though... it's like adding orange juice to rice pudding!! Or chocolate sauce to crisps! Just silly :P

I assume everyone is happy that the Concorde Agreement has been signed. No more insane knee jerk rule changes and Todt's hands are tied for his first three years.

This goes a long way to creating #f1happyplace

Not exactly going in at a low level either... Finland is the fastest rally on the calender....

No way should a rallying newby have done as well as he did...

    4 year term I think

question to all: I was wondering if I should buy a netbook. which is your opinion about this kind of computers? I already have at home/office powerful desktop machines, so I only need something light and comfortable to travel around (yet, powerful enough to not crawl around...).

  • Steven Roy01/08/2009 at 21:05

Random question, how long is the presidency term? or is it just until they get bored?

I think it is 4 years. It is a finite time. Max has done 4 terms and 18 years I think but that was because he pulled some stunt where he resigned to let them vote for him again after a two years or something.

  • Lukeh01/08/2009 at 21:06

    4 year term I think

with an unlimited choice of term times?

And look how intriguing this season is on the track...

Can anyone say who will win at Valencia?....

It's not at all clear... I must look up the odds....

It could be any one of probably six people.... and could turn out to be someone from left field... although not in a BMW....

question to all: I was wondering if I should buy a netbook. which is your opinion about this kind of computers? I already have at home/office powerful desktop machines, so I only need something light and comfortable to travel around (yet, powerful enough to not crawl around...).

Kathi bought one recently and qas quit impressed by it. I can't remember what manufacturer it was.

  • Steven Roy01/08/2009 at 21:09

with an unlimited choice of term times?

They are only allowed to do two terms. Max changed the rules for himself then put the two limit back

  • Jackie / saltire01/08/2009 at 21:09

They are only allowed to do two terms. Max changed the rules for himself then put the two limit back

So Max had to go anyway?

  • Steven Roy01/08/2009 at 21:10

So Max had to go anyway?

Max should have gone 10 years ago but as with many things he re-wrote the rules to suit himself.

  • guille230601/08/2009 at 21:11

So Max had to go anyway?

no, because if 'people ask you to stay' you have to stay, even if yo want to leave or break one or two rules... ;-)

  • Steven Roy01/08/2009 at 21:13

no, because if 'people ask you to stay' you have to stay, even if yo want to leave or break one or two rules... ;-)

That seems to be the phrase that bypasses all rules and procedures.

? dunno. needs work.

I like that idea. We could do something with that. Needs a bit of thought and someone to take it on. Any volunteers to work with Nikki on it

We have been looking at netbooks as advice for our students and purchased for us lecturers to lug to lecture halls to present our PowerPoints. Their advantages are small size (very convenient) and often very long battery life (5 hours). I like the various Asus eee PC the Sea Shell 1008HA is particularly nice but in SA they are relatively too expensive so we got Lenovo S10 which were in our currency about 30% cheaper but similar price to others in the UK. Lenovo is nice, very solid construction but it has two drawbacks: only two USB ports and the screen is only 575 not 600 pixels in height and these makes a surprising different. Ensure you get a six cell battery or check on the battery life. Other brands to consider are Acer, Samsung and MSI Wind. If you can move off Window to a light Linux (Mint XFCE) they offer plenty of power. Forget ones using Windows Vista but normally they come with XP Home which is not terribly secure but otherwise OK.

Thanks. Yes, I leaned towards netbooks because I need something I can throw in my backpack while travelling/going to a conference, not to make massive calculations or play games on it. So, portability (weight+battery life) is my target. Price can make a difference for me (the exchange rate is not favourable at all in Argentina), but I always preferred to spend a little bit more and get something better ;-)

And I expect to run Linux on it, that's not under discussion :-)

  • Andy Taylor01/08/2009 at 21:39

HP did, I think some other tried and I think the Sony P Vaio (it is really a netbook). Both Asus and Lenovo really work beautifully with LinuxMint XFCE - it is such a solid OS and light on the CPU and memory.

  • Jackie / saltire01/08/2009 at 21:41

I bought a Samsung netbook. It's okay, got great battery life but I didn't appreciate at the time that you have to buy a portable DVD on a usb connection to load software

  • Andy Taylor01/08/2009 at 21:46

You could use an iPod Touch or iPhone as your presentation device.

Just check the prices in your country but the consensus is the Samsung is really nice. The Lenovo S10 is well built and can be chucked around quite a bit. I have tried more than 60 Linux types plus all the main desktops Gnome, KDE, E17, XFCE and LXDE on specifically netbooks. My advice is use an Ubunti-based OS, but MintLinux is really polished-they have done a good job. I personally like Macs, but the price premium is too high and the MacBook Air is a joke.

  • Steven Roy01/08/2009 at 21:50

Well that was a long 48 hours in BernieWorld. He must work on Sidepodtime.

The Macbook Air isn't a joke, it is a very nice little machine indeed, sharing the same graphics card as all the 13" machines. I wouldn't buy one myself though, due to the lack of ports, but don't dismiss its capabilities outright.

  • Rich01/08/2009 at 21:51

I just used a desktop PC to copy from Disk to USB to load. Depending on local price the Samsung is a good choice if it is similarly priced to the competition. Just has a slightly small track space. Asus are generally considered to have the best key board with HP and this could be a selling point.

  • Rich01/08/2009 at 21:56

The lack of ports (1 USB), no LAN and does not connect to an external Monitor without extra hardware all makes it a non-starter for me. It has a very nice screen and a good processor. Also you cannot replace the battery and in our country it is insanely priced - you can get 6 Lenovo S10s for the same price.

  • Jeremy01/08/2009 at 21:57

I have a Macbook Air and can confirm it's awesomeness. I have a small, non powered USB hub that I had to use one once when using my 3G modem and updating an iPod. The hub cost the equivelant of 6 pounds (targus) and weighs next to nothing. I don't consider one USB port an issue. I've only used the dd burner once in a year due to the ability to put disks in other computers on the network when needing to install stuff.

If only the Air was cheaper...

  • Andy Taylor01/08/2009 at 21:59

Also you cannot replace the battery and in our country it is insanely priced - you can get 6 Lenovo S10s for the same price.

You can replace it at your local authorised reseller. I agree that the price is mad, another reason for me not buying one.

I have the USB to Ethernet adapter but the 802.11n wireless does everything I want. I use the iPhone tethered via Bluetooth now so I don't need the 3G modem anymore.

Mine came with the little dongles for hooking up monitors and unlike everything else on the market, these give me the choice of VGA or dvi. That's right, Apple giving you more choice than others! :P

We were originally told it was not servicable when we looked into them, you are correct though it can be replaced at an Apple dealer. Apologies, but I still think it is too compromised for the cost, at least here in SA. I am a fan of OSX but I can build a Linux desktop that looks very similar and almost as crash proof.

the price just dropped by a good amount in Aust. They are still more than the entry level 13 inch MacBook pro that I have now.

I'm thinking of trying to find one of those Toshiba 250GB 5400 RPM 1.8 inch hard drive for my air to see what difference it will make to the speed

Kathi uses Ubuntu - LinuxMint is Ubuntu done properly. It is the only OS* I have seen that with one install is a complete working desktop with all codecs for playing video etc. Sorry to the Mac guys but this is one really complete install.

There is Cambodian produced Linux called Moon OS which use E17 as the desktop and is pretty complete - also based on Ubuntu. Being fairly unknown there is not much of a community of users whereas Mint has a big community to help you out.

Imitated doing cricket, had Toad-in-the-hole Mash and peas followed by Spotty-Dick pudding. Played games like put the tail on the Whippet - my dog looks a bit like a cross between a Whippet and Terrier. Pity we did not have any Ferrets though.

Not necessarily. Brandy Alexander is brandy and milk. My grandfather never drank alcohol till after he retired and my uncle opened a pub. He had a dodgy stomach so he used to have whisky with milk in it

  • Janna01/08/2009 at 22:58

    Unions aren’t really in fashion here. {Comment #241}

My one experience with unions so far is when the three official unions of my previous employer wanted me to sign up for them - but none of them could produce an application form comprehensible to either me or themselves. Needless to say, I didn't join any unions - if they couldn't help me join, they wouldn't have been much help with the serious problems I encountered with my employer later.

    When I was growing up, August 1st was considered ‘the horses birthday’. Poor horsies all had their birthday on the same day. Is this a local or worldwide weirdness? {Comment #567}

Worldwide - but only applies to some types of horse.

All Arabs, Thoroughbreds and racing horses have their birthday on January 1 for licensing reasons.

Hunters and jumpers have their birthdays on September 1.

Horses being shown in certain other competitions, such as the Jockey Club, have their birthdays on whatever day they were born.

August 1 is a general day for those horses which aren't obliged to have a birthday at some other time for administrative purposes but whose owners like the idea of having one set day to celebrate - at least in some places.

At the farm where I live, birthdays are celebrated by some horse owners and not others. Among those who do celebrate, some do it on January 1, some on Christmas Day (to make sure they don't get left out of the present-exchanging), some on the day when the horse was born and at least one seems to do it on a random day of the year.

So it's just like a more complicated version of the lottery, except that getting chosen doesn't guarantee you to be a millionaire?

It is a massive lottery. I worked out all sorts ofstrategies like applying for shows that were likely to be the least popular because they were recorded last on a particular day so that you would have to go back the next day if you had any success or last in a series etc but nothing. Then they had a whole string of people who were on the show and had only ever called once. Most annoying

And there's nothing on it. Hmmm... Looks like there's no press release yet. Let's see if it's indeed true, although I suspect it is. Kinda like what happened with Le Seb.

I wonder if daddy is trying to buy the team from Renault. That would explain why they have kept him so long.

It seems odd for something like that to be announced on a Saturday.

I think Joe's hunch is correct about Renault. But what if daddy is buying... BMW?

    Are Renault on shutdown now?

No chance. Running a team in Switzerland is too much hassle.

    Not sure.

So BMW is basically Sauber or bust now?

    Sauber or Thiessen or both.

  • Journeyer02/08/2009 at 01:20

    Sauber or Thiessen or both.

Hmmm... I like the idea of both. But I'm not sure if they can co-exist as co-team bosses.

Sauber is in his 60s so I can't imagine he wants the day to day involvement.

Good point. Would Dr Mario leave BMW to do this, though? Would love him to do it, then to do well, just to prove to BMW he was right all along.

He has a big decision to make. Does he want a seat on the board of BMW and the possibility to run the company one day or become an F1 team principal/owner

Indeed. Both have big pros and big cons, too. Let's see what he does.

Of course, if he ends up running the company, he can just bring BMW back to F1, but how long would that take?

I would almost be prepared to bet they will be back in soe dorm within a decade as will Honda. It's what manufacturers do.

  • Journeyer02/08/2009 at 01:44

BMW left F1 in... 1986, I think. They started preparing their comeback in 1999. 13 years apart.

Honda left F1 in 1992, came back as Honda in 2000. Of course, they never really fully left that time - Mugen was still around in their absence.

Renault left F1 in 1997, started preparing their comeback by buying Benetton in 2000.

Yeah, your estimate should be just about right.
