The last day of January already! An entire month of 2010 has passed us by and we are staring down the barrel of February. We've also got two launches today, and some testing to preview. It's going to be a busy one! Meanwhile, Mr C and I are starting to feel better (thanks for covering yesterday, Mr C), so we're starting to catch up on some of the things we had planned this weekend. Here's some of the stuff we're talking about:

  • Despite forgetting that it was even on, we ended up being very interested in the Arctic Rally, and particularly how well Kimi Raikkonen got on. We covered the topic originally in an introductory thread, and summed up his performance over the two days in another post. I also spent a while collecting the best of the best pictures for an F1 Big Picture special.
  • I also wrote a post about Autosport's recent decision to provide the magazine as a digital subscription alongside the paper version. This is great news for us and means we can actually subscribe finally, and it's also good to see how many other magazines are starting to look at online solutions.
  • Pat W is keeping busy and participating in the 24 Hour Blogathon over on The Furious Wedge. Alongside the 24 Hours at Daytona, Pat and Allen plus a host of others will providing updates and entries as often as they can. I don't know how they're going to manage to stay awake, but good luck to all!

That's all for now. We may be recording another show this weekend, depending on our energy levels, but unfortunately it will be another non-live one, so the edited version will be along as soon as possible. I will see you in the comments.

Cheers for the Blogathon mention :)

I'm not staying up all night but many others are, I think. I'm staying up long enough for a Mario Kart session which starts in 25 mins :-)

A live chat is currently underway in an embedded blog post.

I have nothing interesting to say except that I am having domino's pizza, ordered on the Internet, as is customary around here.

I hope everybody has a great Sunday and those feeling unwell, feel better soon.

I am off to have noms now :-)

we have a Penrith in far western Sydney. If it's anything like our Penrith, you will need your bogan flannie and ugg boots.

  • Alison31/01/2010 at 09:40

well there might be I have no idea really.

Hehe I'm sure it'll be fine. I just can't think where there's places like that in Penrith. It's pretty petit.

Morning! I'm enjoying this tennis match even though Murray isn't winning. Getting up and watching tennis on a Sunday is almost as good as there being f1 on a Sunday :)

Morning lou, quite frankly I'd like to have a lie in right now, but the tennis is a half decent substitute.

  • Alison31/01/2010 at 09:48

There seems to be a lot of Murray supporters in the ground...

I wasn't thinking you were don't worry. But my previous comment could be read that way. Sorry if you were thinking I was calling you out. We have the same issue in any country. The local team is always the best. And the british media are desperate for a champion. One day.

I miss watching the Australian open at the correct timeslot :(

"I can cry like Roger. A shame I can't play like him" - andy Murray. Awe sweet.

Hey good news... Abu Dhabi want to have the last race of the year 'indefinitly' http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81141 :D

Bit of a sloppy mistake at the end though, they write that they want to have an emirate in F1 within 10 years. An emirate is a state, i think they might have meant an Emirati (a person) as large masses of land don't tend to race all that well.

But Bahrain has a new sector to make the raving even better!

    /bahrainprspeak

Hindy off MWM reckoned the new section was quite cool. Thing is, he was talking from a sportscar perspective...

Urm, racing. although they can rave if they want to

I don't think you'll see much raving in Bahrain ;)

    Still doesn't explain who GMM are... {Comment #174}

They're an organisation (of one, as far as we can ascertain) which looks for any news/rumour related to F1 in the printed media and releases a slightly-edited version out to the internet via sites that purchase its services. Sadly, it is not noted for checking the veracity, let alone potential biases, of the information it carries, the contextuality of its responses or faithful translation. As such, a lot of the information it contains is not true (the owner of GMM has admitted as much on this very site) but a lot of people fall for it, largely because of the number of information sources who think purchasing GMM's services is a good idea.

  • Journeyer31/01/2010 at 15:21

the new teams are allowed 3 no shows...nice to see they're ready for the new season :s

as for stefanovic, i would assume his backers are giving him a window of a year, at best. if all 3 new teams (i'm not counting sauber) get onto the grid in 2011, stefan's funding would surely be cut off.

going back to sauber, since they're "technically" a new team, it says they're allowed 3 no-shows. i don't see any reason for them to use it, and neither will lotus (which goes to show how much ground they've made up cred-wise despite entering very later). as long as the CFD car isn't a disaster for Virgin, i don't think they'll use it either.

  • lou31/01/2010 at 15:21

i feel angry that they'll help new teams out a bit, but don't care about the old teams when they fold mid season (i'm looking at you Honda!.. poor Super Aguri)

but this is only for the new teams, though? they're the only ones who got the exception from that concorde clause.

Is there a clause in the concorde? I cant see frank, luca or ron agreeing to something that big quite that freely.

It seems very odd given what bernie has done for the past 30 years

  • Journeyer31/01/2010 at 15:30

Is there a clause in the concorde? I cant see frank, luca or ron agreeing to something that big quite that freely.

i would think so. i thought that was the reason why arrows purposely fluffed qualifying in France 2002. they were contractually bound to show up, but their lawyers told them not to race (because of that financial mess they had that year).

  • Bert31/01/2010 at 15:36

A DP (#7) car coming out of the pits, on cold tires, ran off the pit exit lane, taking itself out and a GT GT3. On the resulting yellow flag the class leading GT (#71) car just ran out of fuel.

    Innovative?

  • Christine31/01/2010 at 16:46

So, as this is becoming a regular thing, we need to think about getting Giggles his own dedicated thread and category. Gotta do these things in style.

  • Alex Andronov31/01/2010 at 16:46

We may be hearing from the band again in the show. But don't worry it's nowhere near as weird.

  • Alex Andronov31/01/2010 at 16:46

    Innovative?

    :)

  • Christine31/01/2010 at 16:47

    Woohoo, no crackling.

    #sidepodspace - woohoo

India is planning its own manned space program. Unfortunately it is not going to happen for a little while due to one or two details about the vehicle. Like they don't actually have one. Interestingly they are planning on doing it within 7 years which is exactly the same timescale NASA is planning for a bigger version of the vehicle they flew 40+ years ago.

The department has carried out a detailed study on the feasibility of undertaking indigenous human space flight mission with an aim to build and demonstrate the capability for carrying humans to low earth orbit and their return to earth. The programme envisages development of a fully autonomous orbital vehicle carrying two or three crew members to 275 km low earth orbit and their safe return. It is planned to realise the programme in about seven years time frame.

How many Giggles radios have there been and are there replays of them?

This is the 3rd in this run. And of course there was 1 original one with no video which was released the first time there was supposed to be Sidepodradio when it was kind of forgotten. Then there were 4 for the weekend Michael almost came back and then there were 4 for actual giggles radio.

They meant other Nico - otherwise he does not get a chance to drive which is really silly.

Nick is not going anywhere other than possibly DTM. Mercedes have not confirmed him which is strange and suggestive. It seems the only interest is from Martin at McLaren as the reserve driver.

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 18:03

We haz to go record a show now but keep up the good choons and we'll check back on the replay later!

It's worth checking it out on YouTube. The modern album is one of the most amazingly misguided moments in pop. But he does it knowingly and I love it... but I won't play it.

Just like I won't play Cyanide Breath Mint by Beck... because while I love it nobody else will get it and it's not accesible really is it?

Everything seems to be coming together in the right place at the right time, even including the details like liveries.

Call me cynical but other than top 4 teams everything else looks incredible mediocre. Petrov has had a completely mediocre career too date - he is only there because of the money and his nationality and the same thing can be said for both Sauber drivers. Looking on the positive side Force India must be in a position to capitalise - Renault, Sauber, VR as these guys really look pathetic, basically I not sure why they are bothering. I do sense that Lotus might do something at leas they have experienced drivers so could move forward. Sadly we now have a two tier series, but hopefully on a few circuits the Force India guys might get a look in. For sure no one else is. USF1 and Campos really look as if they will not even make the first races hence the three race grace - which I think is ridiculous.

VR as these guys really look pathetic

    WHAT?!

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 19:29

Mercedes, McLaren as a Pedro replacement?, Red Bull?

Red Bull has a tester - Ricciardo - a driver that should have been with STR if there was any fairness and F1 was genuinely a reflection of driver merit.

oh yes they are pathetic - not so much the drivers - but really attempting to design without a wind tunnel - come on. I feel sorry as they could well be the slowest of all.

It's definitely worth tearing them apart before they even have a chance to prove whether it will work. Give them a few races at least, yeesh.

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 19:34

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 19:36

Theres 4 drivers, so i presume one of them has been notimated

I know they had 4 drivers but it is likely that neither of them has a suerlicence and the guy running the team now used to work with Franck so logically that is the team that would be interested in him

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 19:38

It's definitely worth tearing them apart before they even have a chance to prove whether it will work. Give them a few races at least, yeesh.

The probability is there - look how long it took Force India to get up to competitiveness and they were in a much stronger position. I think Lotus have some chance - the rest have compromised themselves before they have started by going for second rate drivers because sponsorship. When you could have had Davidson, Sato, Klien - even up Nakajima - these guys are all way better, both in terms of what they did in earlier series plus they have some F1 experience. Driving with full tanks is going to be a challenge to the best drivers.

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 19:39

I did a French news search for Franck. The only news item mentioning him in the last four days is for tax evasion. There is a whole list of people who the French goverenment would like to pay tax who don't. This is a long running battle.

    http://www.democratie-socialisme.org/spip.php?article2062

On Jan 26th there is a news item saying that during an interview he said he had signed a contract for the season as well as his Peugeot Le Mans deal but he would not give any more info. If the contract was with Renault it is odd he was not there today. It may not even be an F1 contract. It could be IRL or anything else.

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 19:44

When they were independent Sauber did not use a third driver. They appear to have one hair product sponsor. Remember Brawn for all its winning only got 4 million pounds of sponsorship last season. There is no real use of a third driver unless you one driver has an accident - this happened twice during 2009 and at neither time could the team swap. I think the car is awesome just a waste on the driver talent they have so I expect Sauber to finish 10th or 9th as the absolutely highest.

  • RG31/01/2010 at 19:47

I disagree with you 1000% there, as said earlier, de la Rosa last featured in 2006, in a McLaren, which ended up in one podium. Might have lost a bit since then but still is fine. Kobayashi, well, aggressive, he's gonna try anything to overtake the guy in front. I'm coming around to being happy with who we have got.

I am sure we have Badoer mark II for 2010 - with Kobayashi -anything is possible he had a fast car for the two races last year. Is he better than Takuma or Kazuki - no ways!

It wasn't that fast a car, midfield car. You have got to remember of all the one overtaking manouvers in the race at Abu Dhabi, he did it on Jenson Button.

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 19:56

I have done lots of analysis the Toyota had a lot of potential speed - possibly having two drivers with different set-up compromised them. It was a better car than the Sauber, Renault, Williams, Ferrari, Force India etc. There was no point for Jenson to defend he was going to get the position back during the next pit stop.

Lets see who the other driver is - but yes a few months ago they were saying they were going to chose the driver on merit. If Renault were straight and said we hired Petrov because he brings a lot of money it is one thing. But to say we want a driver to push Kubica and expect to compete in the top three - this is obviously not going to be the case - too date his career is way more mediocre than PK as is all other new drivers baring Nico.

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 20:49

A website is something that works - like if you click on a button that say EN you expect English - its a dogs dinner - but nice photos - I will grant them that.

    it does. here's some text:

The BMW Sauber F1 Team welcomes Thomann Nutzfahrzeuge AG as an Official Supplier. The innovative Swiss family company will supply Peter Sauber’s Formula One team with semitrailer tractors and trucks from the Renault Trucks brand

    english.

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 20:53

she said something about him being a test driver?

It is a very vague story. He has made a statement saying that he has signed to drive something for someone this season in addition to doing Le Mans but it could be anything. He is also wanted for tax evasion along with every other famous French sportsperson.

I did a French news search for Franck. The only news item mentioning him in the last four days is for tax evasion. There is a whole list of people who the French goverenment would like to pay tax who don't. This is a long running battle.

    http://www.dem.../spip.php?article2062

On Jan 26th there is a news item saying that during an interview he said he had signed a contract for the season as well as his Peugeot Le Mans deal but he would not give any more info. If the contract was with Renault it is odd he was not there today. It may not even be an F1 contract. It could be IRL or anything else.

Announcements plural? I am only aware of the Indian one and I think that is great news although since they have no plans to go beyond Earth orbit I don't get the point. I can only assume they want in on the moon and Mars missions and are demonstrating their capabilities.

That is good news. In fact if you listen to the sidepodradio sidepodspace show I said that the commercial sector would take over from NASA and NASA's plan to have a 7 year gap with no vehicle capable of launching a man into orbit would result in the commercial sector displacing them. I am surprised that Obama has stopped their gross over-expenditure. I expected them to blow a fortune developing constellation before they found out the game was over.

Now we can make some serious progress.

Good. I read it as good news but I wanted to check with the expert first :)

If you find one let me know what he thinks. One year of NASA's manned space program budget would get every private space business operational and kitted out for years.

  • Alex Andronov31/01/2010 at 22:08

If you find one let me know what he thinks. One year of NASA's manned space program budget would get every private space business operational and kitted out for years.

Will these other people schedule their launches at sensible times? That's the key question ;)

  • me31/01/2010 at 22:10

do we know what time the str is due to break cover tomorrow?

  • Christine31/01/2010 at 22:11

alex, apologies for missing the end of your show.

It's okay, I had already softened him up by offering him a dedicated thread.

  • Alex Andronov31/01/2010 at 22:11

    There was a show?

Indeed there was... Some of the technical problems from week 1 crept in.

I did play Cannonball by The Breeders which meant I could mention Kim Deal of the Pixies and Throwing Muses' Tanya Donelly. Which as I said at the time would have to be good enough as a muse reference for Lukeh...

i think thats the most exciting launch of the current teams.

    I like that as a phrase :)

  • Lukeh31/01/2010 at 22:15

    oooh

It has got me wondering now about F1 lookalikes. Adrian newey has always reminded me of Colin Mochrie...

  • Steven Roy31/01/2010 at 22:16

Will these other people schedule their launches at sensible times? That's the key question ;)

Commercial flights at least initially are all going to be from the White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico so all the weather call offs we get should not happen any more. No commercial business is going to schedule a launch when there is a 60% chance of it not happening just because of the weather.

The timing of the launches tend to be dictated by the target they are aiming at. The ISS is only over the area close to the launch site on two consecutive orbits in about 24 hours so if those are in the middle of the night you either launch then or you wait a few weeks.

  • RG31/01/2010 at 22:16

If they are launching to the ISS they have no say in the time. If they are launching satellites etc then they should be able to avoid those times

    Ah that's a shame.

All of those references went over my head but that seems to be the theme for my weekend ;-)

  • Rich31/01/2010 at 22:22

It has got me wondering now about F1 lookalikes. Adrian newey has always reminded me of Colin Mochrie...

I think it would be funny if the Red Bull looks completely different this year. Last year it was overall the best car by a fairly considerable margin when averaged over the entire season. In 2010 the most cars so far have copied the 2009 Red Bull so it might make them a bit worried if it looks radically different.

  • Alex Andronov31/01/2010 at 22:23

If they are launching to the ISS they have no say in the time. If they are launching satellites etc then they should be able to avoid those times

Phew... I mean I think NASA should realise that while I like space travel I do not like these random times. I mean... I'm not even happy with an odd number off tic-tacs... http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2009/01/three-tic-tacs.html

What am I supposed to do with all of this?

    Le Mans

    Really?

Yep. In terms of fans, more Brits attend Le Mans than any other race. In terms of drivers, loads of Brits in there.

I know you are reaching out for a domestic championship but to be blunt, there isn't one. BTCC likes to think it is and is close as we have, I wouldn't call it a pinnacle of anything though.

i dont have an answer, im doing an assignment creating a direct marketing pack for a BTCC event and put "The 2010 event takes place on the 2nd May, we invite you and your guests to attend the pinnacle of British Motorsport" but then realised that actually its probably not.

How many people immediately thought of Forix?

  • Lukeh31/01/2010 at 22:44

    Go on Mr Lukeh.

Brawn finished when after the Brazilian Grand Prix, Jenson and Rubens went to have a dinner together and decided that they could get some information from other teams. So, they said to Mr Brawn "Ross, we are the Dream Team and I think it might be best if we finish Brawn GP for now and we go and see what the other teams are doing." Sadly, mr Brawn has been phoned 5 minutes before by the One Who Schu Not Be Named, who told him that Mercedes GP would be invading the land of Brackley in the next few weeks and replacing all their employees with clones. So, the Dream Team went off to get new information from different teams whilst the Brawn GP employees have all gone on holiday in Costa Rica. The clones are running Mercedes GP and they are all completely different, as they are being controlled by the One Who Schu Not Be Named, and Ross Brawn is in a trance caused by this evil nogooder.

So basically, they are completely different and Rubens and jenson are not allowed to say otherwise their master plan, to reform Brawn GP with the real employees in 2 years time, will not happen.

If you allow this completely true story, then we will all happily say that Sauber have returned!

If you lot don't call Sauber a returning team, then I refuse to allow Brawn and Mercedes to be two different teams.

but Sauber is a new team, actually more so than Brawn when it changed from Honda. In FIA eyes they are a new team since they got none of the broadcasting money despite getting sixth place in 2009. Also they have new drivers.

One think I am confident they will not win the championship - in fact they will be hard pressed not to finish last.

  • Jon "Is Not Very Observant" Waldock31/01/2010 at 22:45

Usually the 'pinnacle' is the destination people aim for, so it can't be F3 which is a stepping-stone..
