Woah... It's the end of March already... I wasn't expecting that. I mean with January and February you expect them to flake out on you, but March? March is a trooper, it just keeps going... But no... Today is it!

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but the Formula 1 season has begun and that means there is a lot of stuff for me to link to, as Jennifer Aniston once said, "here comes the links" (it may have been science):

So what about the Motorsport news that isn't about Australia? Do we have some of that? Youbetcha!

And... Mercedes have a new advert featuring Schumacher, Rosberg, a can of Red Bull and a very special guest:

Amy was very pleased by the actions of the special guest in the video and so I was more than happy to clip out that bit and put it on a loop, it's ended up being a bit creepy (so be warned):

What about some non-Motorsport stuff? Oh yeah we've got that too:

Right so that's all of that... And there seems to be quite a bit of it... So when shall we meet again? Well hopefully at 4pm on Sunday when it's time for a new Giggles Radio show, this Sunday it's 1982. Be there or be very much square.

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Hi Thursday and your MASSIVE videos. :)

I just watched the '60 years' BBC documentary after watching the safety one earlier. The latter was a quick hour, the former seemed to go on for ages just like the Bahrain GP it was based around.

  • Steven Roy30/03/2011 at 23:30

I posted a comment on your page saying that only one person can win now so they may as well. Also pointed out that you caught up a 4 day start in 36 hours

  • Alison30/03/2011 at 23:31

    :D

Nick told me to ring up work yesterday and tell them I couldn't come in because I was behind with studying. I don't think I managed to explain in the end why that wouldn't be okay.

That said, I have resolved to work no overtime until I'm all caught up.

As I'm not confident about forum policy regarding such things, no. If it turns out promoting other people's stuff is banned there, then even the most well-intentioned promotion would be counter-productive.

If I remember correctly, 600 MYR should be enough for the trip (not counting any souvenirs purchased).

from the looks of it we'll be taxiing to the track each day so that'll add up, but its only about AU$20 each way which seems very cheap to me :)

But while parts of the BBC were going back to the dark ages, other parts (the ever wonderful Blue Peter) were breaking boundaries by broadcasting their entire program in 3D

Mr E, please put this on all the cars, now.

3D? Hmmm. Not so keen on it, TBH. Unnecessary fluff for me.

I really like 3D, for me it is the natural progression from HD, especialy for gaming. If it wasnt for the cost i would have it now.

I understand that some people cant see it or its uncomfortable, i dont think thats a reason to hold the tech back though

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2011 at 06:59

Could work to some extent... But I'm not convinced of it for F1 just yet.

You probably wouldn't use them for what we think of as 3D or even like they do on Blue Peter where we can drive the camera angle. What it would give the director is the ability to turn the cameras on the car at any time and for the footage to already have been recorded. So it's not like you would say, "oh it looks like Alonso got rammed by somebody at the back, wish I had turned the camera around there", the camera would have already recorded it and the footage could be played.

  • Nick31/03/2011 at 06:59

That might be hard to concentrate on for a 2 hour race with 22 cars!

Wouldnt a moveable camera be much more efficient?

    :)

  • Nick31/03/2011 at 07:04

It would need some mega computing power to deal with all that footage coming back, the bandwidth requirements must be huge for full 360HD

*I dont think you can really call it 3D

  • F1Wolf31/03/2011 at 07:04

Mike Gascoyne is awesome, silvi asked him about how the sydney harbour bridge is supported and...

... he has to somehow cover the fact that he can't get the heat into tyres :-)

  • RubberGoat31/03/2011 at 07:19

I just watched the '60 years' BBC documentary after watching the safety one earlier. The latter was a quick hour, the former seemed to go on for ages just like the Bahrain GP it was based around.

The '60 years' did drag on a bit - but Mrs. Goat enjoyed it and we ended up talking about F1, so it was good.

    Lotus FAIL

well, if Lotus FAIL what to say about Virgin ... Lotus did look bad on Fri and Sat but they were actually quite quick (relatively speaking) in the race. When I was following the live timing could see that on several laps they were not that far behind FI . They however were about 2 secs faster than Virgins.

so, thinking about that it could have been that the conditions and set up caught them up in Mercedes or Ferrari way ... lets see. now when we know Mike can explain a bridge I am confident they will do just fine :-)

Well I don't see how Virgin can continue to operate with the limited budget they have - they are not exactly proving that cutting costs and using CFD is the way of the future.

We will see. I think Lotus should be in the midfield with the talent and resources they have.

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2011 at 08:26

I don't see how this is supposed to have happened in only year 2. Who should they be faster than? Torro Rosso? Well they have the Red Bull back end too...

they have Marussia :-) although I am not sure how much can a company that is yet to start any serious sales (Lotus Proton or Spyker anyone ...) pump into and F1 team ...

I don't see how this is supposed to have happened in only year 2. Who should they be faster than? Torro Rosso? Well they have the Red Bull back end too...

    Sure, why not?

Or, to put it another way, why should they be even further behind in year 2 than in year 1?

  • RubberGoat31/03/2011 at 08:45

OK, so points for Lewis for making a 13,000 mile round trip to see his brother make his racing debut: http://andtheythinkitallover.blogspot.com/2011/03/never-say-never-defying-odds.html?spref=tw

  • F1Wolf31/03/2011 at 08:46

Or, to put it another way, why should they be even further behind in year 2 than in year 1?

they (Lotus) do not seem to be further behind the back of the midfield, they clearly are further behind the top. at the end as the team show us year after year, having a good car in race one is a bonus (and bonus points) but how it goes from then on is what matters. last year they knew they had a car that had minimal potential for further development. this year they seem to be confident that there is more to be extracted. now it all depends if they can match the pace of development of Force India, Toro Rosso or Sauber.

  • RubberGoat31/03/2011 at 08:47

Well let's hope the reason for slowness is just untapped development and they do improve then.

I just expected them to be a little quicker out of the box.

  • F1Wolf31/03/2011 at 08:48

Lotus aren't slower than last year, Virgin are.

  • F1Wolf31/03/2011 at 08:49

I just expected them to be a little quicker out of the box.

but the same could apply to Ferrari and Mercedes who were much slower in Australia than they (and probably everybody else) expected

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2011 at 08:49

they (Lotus) do not seem to be further behind the back of the midfield, they clearly are further behind the top.

Well they do seem to be a bit further behind. At the end of last season in Abu Dhabi in a normal qualifying the fastest Lotus was 1.6 behind the slowest established team. In Australia the fastest Lotus was just over 2 seconds behind the slowest other driver the blocked and out of position Heidfeld. The gap was even bigger to the other drivers.

  • Nick31/03/2011 at 08:50

I just expected them to be a little quicker out of the box.

A lot of teams were in that position. Look at Williams, there was lots of expectation for their triumphant return, but they were probably equally as disappointing as lotus when it came to a race weekend

yes, but the gap was much much smaller in the race, and the gap to Virgin in the race was huge. so they obviously still have the quali pace problem, but race pace is much better ...

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2011 at 08:52

The old adage is always true sponsorship stickers always seem to really weigh cars down in pre-season testing. The fewer you have, the faster you go.

yes it is not, but people tend to get overexcited when they have news to share, and being live on sort of tele at that moment does not help

it was kind of announced two months back

Hehehe. I never got an embargoed email before. Quite exciting.

not that they work online any more. looks like the photograpy people are being crap.

  • RubberGoat31/03/2011 at 10:24

OK Here's what I have found out.

The James Key rumour appears to have come from this tweet:http://twitter.com/#!/F1Lite/status/53151345674432512

Which was then sent to @PeterDWindsor twice: http://twitter.com/#!/jeremyfiel/status/53158538935152640 and http://twitter.com/#!/tommillard/status/53161812643946498

So it must have then been discussed on the show and then tweeted as a rumour: http://twitter.com/#!/TheFlyingLap/status/53160447515439105

Well it depends on how they discussed it, but the story is at best very flimsy.

I think its because people like to say the word 'embargo'

I just checked and Peter Windsor seems to be doing a live show right now... According to Justin TV he currently has 3 viewers... but then I stopped viewing because I wasn't really viewing it I just accidentally clicked on the video.

any truth to the rumour gmm have signed him up for 2011?

We should start a rumor that he is actually a member of the royal family, hence the surname

  • Stuart C31/03/2011 at 10:36

    The F1 Times

    These are the people who:

    - Publically proclaimed that they were ceasing to use GMM, though what they actually did was cease to pay for GMM's feed but plagiarise the stories

    - Had two 'staff' at the 2010 McLaren launch, neither of whom apparently did anything because the news story the site carried about the event was from GMM!

  • Leigh O'Gorman31/03/2011 at 10:36

Not the best logic I've ever seen. If James Moy was right, every season would be over at the first race because one car is always better than the others on a given method of comparison.

  • Nick31/03/2011 at 10:52

Also DC in 2003 and Fisi in 2005 (yes, I know he was in the fastest car, but it's a lot more complicated than that, and James seems to have underestimated the extent of it). This isn't the Schumacher era, everyone...

  • Maverick31/03/2011 at 11:07

Maybe it was code for "this is so utterly pathetic that it's beneath our notice but we're too polite and respectful of others to say so out loud?"

the majority of the story was about how sauber fans are rioting and calling for a regime change (where is RG by the way? political prisoner?)

they tagged on the Key thing as a footnote

so, overall, "utterly pathetic" would be a good choice of phrase

you could do that several times a week - it doesn't seem to make any difference

Normally I don't even see F1Lite's tweets - it was only because it was further rumouring a return to Force India for James (Force India being one of my search terms) that I knew F1Lite was saying anything on the topic. The fact it hasn't responded to me indicates that it's not much good at learning from its actions - but I suppose at least other people searching F1Lite (or me) will notice this complaint has been put...

Its also a good refference to check back how often you drink, my sleep patterns are way different after alcohol

    Well, Mr Benson...

Peter Sauber, team principal of his eponymous team, called technical director James Key back to Switzerland to investigate the error that led to drivers Perez and Kamui Koboyashi disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix. He stressed that Key has kept his job but that the quality control department in the team's factory is to be strengthened.

In what way? It makes a whole lot more sense that quality control would be strengthened than James Key would be getting fired for one error, and it is polite to discuss these things with your technical director before doing them...

Exactly. So how did anyone infer from this that James Key would get fired?

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 12:47

Why do companies like asking you to return job application forms by email but expect you to be able to sign a declaration on the form?

Possibly. One that I get round by using my PDA/stylus combination to generate a digital signature and applying it to the form.

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 12:48

Exactly. So how did anyone infer from this that James Key would get fired?

Because some people are good at misinterpreting stuff. They probably saw "James Key called back to Switzerland", assumed there was only one possible reason for doing that in the middle of a bunch of flyaways, put 2 and 2 together and got 17.

  • Nick31/03/2011 at 12:50

I just heard that the green party won the election in Badewn-Württemberg (3rd biggest state in Germany) (after 58 years of Christian Democrats.) I'm not sure if that proves the point that all parties are the same anyway or that there really might be a change in mindset.

They will have the first ever green minister president in Germany.

No Maverick, you dig the hole AFTER filling forms 37 and 19.4 unless you fill out form 56.4 seeking approval from the minister to have the SOP for digging a hole changed....

You might have better luck clarifying that the hole you wish to dig does not meet the governmental standards for a hole and pass your request to the Ministry of Dips to expedite your request. :P

There are two elections at the moment in Germany. Baden-Württemberg (Mercedes, Hockenheim) and Rheinland-Pfalz (Nürburgring). In Rheinland-Pfalz, the Green Party will probably go from 4,6% to around 15% and become governing party as a minority partner with the SPD. In Baden-Württemberg they are more or less equal partner with SPD but will provide the minister president. (sorry my vocabulary especially for politics are not the best). But as I said before I don't think it will make much difference for motorsport. And in 5 years they probably will be gone again.

I use lots of keyboard shortcuts. On every every single piece of software used in Windows alt+space+x maximises it. THat applies to all browsers, word, excel etc. Absolutely everything I have ever used maximises if you use the short cut. Chrome closes 3 windows and 15 tabs if you use that to maximise one of the windows. Absolutely crazy.

The Socialist Party that I was thinking of was the one who one of whos memebers held the Defence Ministry position. He when around disbanding any unit that had a Honour Title of any person that was considered an enemy of the state due to socialist ideologoies.

national You mean Stuck? It was decided that units named after members of a legion called Condor, who where responsible for the bombing of Guernica should be renamed. #sorryaboutthecontinuedpoliticspleasedeleteafterJordanF1readitsoitstopsnow

It isn't that bad here. The odd pause every few seconds.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:45

2 seconds sound 3 seconds silence

  • Pat W31/03/2011 at 18:45

It isn't that bad here. The odd pause every few seconds.

And my pause is very very brief.

  • Lukeh31/03/2011 at 18:45

Is everyone else getting buffering or just Steven?

Still getting it every so often unless this is some cool new remix

Nowhere near as bad as it was though

    same. better than before.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:46

Wirecast is chewing up 77% of the processor!

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:47

For a normal show it would be completely unwatchable to me

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:47

Wirecast is chewing up 77% of the processor!

    ouch

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:48

    No buffering now

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:49

Okay... Wirecast down at 52% now too

    what did you change?

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:51

I had one very short audio pause. Less than half a second. Other than that it was perfect

  • Alex Andronov31/03/2011 at 18:51

    what did you change?

    The size of the video

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 18:52

Red Bull Flexi wing pics: spontoncristiano.…li-stagione-2011/

Looks like Vettel has a lot of negative camber on his front wheels compared to Jenson too. That looks really odd. Maybe just the angle of the photo

  • RubberGoat31/03/2011 at 18:59

True. You can clearly see the wings move on the pole lap video too.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 19:01

True. You can clearly see the wings move on the pole lap video too.

I don't understand how they can run such different camber angles with the same tyres. I need to check how the tyres and wheels sit in corners

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 19:06

True. You can clearly see the wings move on the pole lap video too.

They change balls at an incredible rate. Every time a ball goes into the crowd the fan who catches it keeps it. A lot of times fielders will just throw a ball into the crowd if play has stopped. They must go through 80-150 balls agae

not really, I've been to a few hockey games.

It's also really cold if you go to watch a game

That can be solved with a jumper though...

  • Maverick31/03/2011 at 19:36

Nowt wrong with a bit of hockey...

I don't know, sometimes they hardly have any fights

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 19:36

not really, I've been to a few hockey games.

I have been to one. It was freezing. Granted it was in the old ice rink in Ayr before hockey became popular here but it was cold

I've been to a few NHL games in Washington DC, so it's not like it's a podunk ice rink, that's for sure :)

Please. Give me a break. Take a look at the guy's service record before you condemm him to a crime he did not commit, unless you believe in guilt by association....In which case it is perfectly okay to be guilty of a crime committed by others more than a year prior to your date of enlistment.

It did. I got lots of lengths in, built some speed up, avoided colliding into any walls or people and didn't get any injuries or cramps. So I should be all set to rock... ...Cheshire... ...in 2 days.

if you start on the homepage you'll see the new things that you missed while you were away and then if you go to the comments from there you'll see new things pinged and technically should never miss anything ever again #howidoit

To be fair, if I return to my laptop and there's about 100-odd new comments, then I'm simply not going go through the daily and re-read them.

Sorry if people have a problem with that, but as I said, I don't always have time to give the site my undivided attention.

    Just being honest.

To be fair, if I return to my laptop and there's about 100-odd new comments, then I'm simply not going go through the daily and re-read them.

I'm not talking comments, I'm talking posts.

I don't think I've ever commented on a website without having an idea of what was going on and/or expecting other people to fill me in.

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 22:35

How on earth do you find the time?

    Skim-reading.

  • Amy31/03/2011 at 22:36

How on earth do you find the time?

I get into work about 10 minutes early most days and open up the daily, do a search for my name and find the last comment i wrote then scroll down from there. 10 minutes really is all it takes, although it took a bit longer to read the live posts and their 1500 comments each over the weekend :)

  • Alison31/03/2011 at 22:37

I don't think I've ever commented on a website without having an idea of what was going on and/or expecting other people to fill me in.

But many websites do you comment on where you post a comment on one thread and someone asks you about something in a totally different thread at the same time people are discussing broccoli easter eggs? This site is very different to any other site I have ever seen

  • Leigh O'Gorman31/03/2011 at 22:38

But many websites do you comment on where you post a comment on one thread and someone asks you about something in a totally different thread at the same time people are discussing broccoli easter eggs? This site is very different to any other site I have ever seen

that reminds me, i need to go to krispy kreme and get a box of their easter eggs. Donuts that are easter eggs. mind blown.

Saw Joe's article on Alexander Rossi. So is it safe to say then that their new as-yet-unnamed American sponsor has connections to Rossi?

This seems like the perfect time to try out something we've been pondering.

no, i'm up against someone who has come here to drum up support. She's smart enough to work out what I did to get so many votes, I'll give her that :D

it's a winning strategy, i'll tell you that. good on her! :)

It's an interesting move, but........ I just struggle to really rate Rossi. He's definitely got some speed, but I just don't think he's any better than the likes of Christian Klien, Vitantonio Liuzzi or Scott Speed.

There's not been much about his performances that's ever made me go "wow".

  • Journeyer31/03/2011 at 22:44

the increase is slowing :( and i see i have sidepodcastcompetition now!

you still got 10-12 people to like you today - more than 2nd, 3rd or 4th got today. ;)

Clive Allen used to go on about Rossi a couple of years ago. Clive really rated him.

I'm thinking Clive Allen of F1 Insight?

I think he's better than Speed, but that's not saying much, is it?

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 22:48

I only know one Clive Allen (he's no relation to James), so we may be thinking of the same person.

I'm thinking Clive Allen of Spurs... generally didn't know there was an F1 related one too.

I know, but every time I see him race, I can't get beyond the feeling of "meh, nothing to see here".

In less than two years, to go from Int Formula Masters, to GP2 Asia, to GP3 and now across to World Series by Renault with only two race wins (GP3) to show for it?

I know - he said back then he kinda ran out of things to say. Given how colorful F1 is, I think it's more that he just got tired of it all. Miss that guy a lot.

  • Alison31/03/2011 at 22:55

A bit excessive? If it were me, I'd go for about every 3 hours in the day.

  • RG31/03/2011 at 22:55

Could it be placed as a permanent comment or something which appears at the top each time or something? Sorta something that automatically updates each time a post appears or something.

Every half hour? I think you pick a frequency and if people find it annoying stretch it out a bit and if they don't bring the gap down till they do

It's probably impossible to do something like this as soon as you open realtime? You know like ads or survey requests that pop up when you open a page.

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 22:56

How about a "post pending" in the same style as the "X pending" we have for comments in the Dashboard?

You don't want that. Takes away a chunk of screen real estate. Has more impact as a comment

  • Sidepodcast Update31/03/2011 at 22:57

Some people who decide to start a supermarket in space. Not letting such things as a complete lack of customers get in the way is something that I feel could lead to a not-completely-rubbish sci-fi comedy script.

  • Steven Roy31/03/2011 at 23:06

I like the sound of a supermarket in space. How do shelves work with no gravity?

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 23:07

Two words: Space Station. (Which, to be fair to the cast, was there before the script started).

I hope it's more successful than the pub on the moon.

(you can fill in the punchline yourselves)

  • Alianora La Canta31/03/2011 at 23:17

I hope it's more successful than the pub on the moon.

Haven't decided on that yet - I've gone into this with less detailed planning than usual, to give myself more of a challenge (I won 2 years ago with a highly-regimented plan and want to explore different ways of winning).
