It's the last day of September, which means there are just three more months until the end of the year. It also means all the shops are looking at Christmas already, which is ridiculous. Thank goodness we do our shopping online. Meanwhile, here are some things we're discussing:

  • Hopefully, by the time you read this, all of the Sidepodradio podcasts should have been published and will appear in your podcast feed any minute now. We released them all as a batch, partly because they are repeats of already broadcast material, and partly because we didn't want to break the site. I think we did that anyway.
  • All the talk is that we will have a Ferrari announcement today, confirming a certain driver being signed to their team. It's about time we had a breakout thread, although is it really necessary? This has been a long time coming!
  • Back to Sidepodradio again, we'll be closing the poll for the Charity Vote today, so if you haven't already, get on over and have a look at where you would like the £680 to go. Also, can you remind me to close the poll? Cheers.

That'll do it for now. There should also be a Japan schedule up later today, so we can turn our attention towards the upcoming weekend. I'll see you in the comments.

Why? Do you lose the free bandwidth tomorrow?

No but i only get a certain amount a month, so try and use it. Although i don't plan on doing a weekly show in October, probably only 2-3, so it should be ok

I had planned to do it today, but made a last minute decision to go to Reading for the day instead, so it never got done. It's half way there

  • Scott Woodwiss29/09/2009 at 23:35

I mentioned it a few days a go, but if you're a fan of instrumental acoustic guitar, you really do need to check out the album 11:11 by Rodrigo y Gabriela. It. is. epic! :D

You should see the bloody coins here in Denmark - 1, 2, and 5 kroner coins are identical - silver with a hole in the middle. The 10 and 20 are nearly identical gold coins too!

At least the notes are different colours here :D

On that subject, I have updated the Help Us Transcribe page with Sidepodradio additions.

I want to do them all, but I have limited myself to the cooking show for now.

    Hehe.

Also, the Giggles show would be an excellent start for someone, because they are half words, half music. We don't need transcribed lyrics :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/09/2009 at 08:23

For all those who are a bit annoyed at Will Buckley for the bad article on Aggers at the cricket, he's on Fi... this week and his answer to question three is just as bad:

Question: Was the Crashgate thing 'the worst example of cheating in sport'?

Will Buckley: "No, because a driver crashing by themselves is not dangerous, there are worse examples of cheating in sport (he mentions EPO and the Emperor Nero) and I feel sorry for Flavio Briatore, because he may not be able to run QPR anymore"

    Colin Murray: "Are you drunk?"

It's a good job I am working from home today, profanities were loudly exclaimed upon hearing that answer!

  • Amy30/09/2009 at 08:23

the rules are um. Um. Speak slower!

I know what he means, partially agree with him, i don't think it's the worst example of cheating in sport, but it's quite high up there

i was annoyed when i moved to aus that they still have 5c coins because nz made 10c the smallest denomination available in 2006. We havent had 1c coins since 1990!

There have been some economists suggesting we scrap the 1 and 2 pence coins here because it would increase the money supply. It's a stimulus because currently everyone has loads and loads of them in jars, which they will suddenly go out and spend. And it's deflationary in compensation because things which are 9.99 will become 9.95.

Seems like a good plan to me :)

Yes but the answer as a whole was typical for Will Buckley - have a listen and see what you think... I might drop.io it later if I have time...

Not to mention all the money the government will get from smelting and selling all that lovely copper (commodity prices doing quite well at the moment?)

  • Amy30/09/2009 at 08:29

in nz when they got rid of 5c coins they did a big charity drive and got people to empty their jars of them into charity bins for plunket (a baby charity) and the amount they got was amazing considering how worthless 5c coins felt!

  • Amy30/09/2009 at 08:32

ah when i transcribe i listen to it once in vlc at 0.67 speed which enables me to get about 95% of what is said, then once at 1.0 speed to fill in the gaps. Occasionally if someone is rather mumbly i will have to relisten a few times though!

1 and 2 pence coins have been made of copper plated steel for many years so I don't think they'll save as much. You have to remember that the coin has to be worth more as a coin than as a lump of metal!

1 and 2 pence coins have been made of copper plated steel for many years so I don't think they'll save as much. You have to remember that the coin has to be worth more as a coin than as a lump of metal!

Actually the metal in the 2p coin was worth more than the coin for the first time ever last year, I'm not sure if that's still true.

The use of computing concerning the methodology of disabled teaching. Just studying the progress, current use of and future implementations of technology into helping and improving the way disabled children are taught to and to help them learn. It's aimed at a key stage 2/primary school age too.

Ah okay. What you want is a school with a dedicated off-timetable SENCO. They'll be worth their weight in gold for something like this. What sort of disabilities are you looking for?

We'll be studying it a bit more in the next week or so with my tutor supervisor, it's still very much in the planning stages at the moment. Have until November to get a concrete plan but they seem happy as do I that the foundations are there and hopefully by next week I'll be a lot clearer and a lot more specific with the different disabilities and whatnot to study :)

Depending on your local schools, you might not have a lot of material if you choose something too specific. Most special educational needs are managed through dedicated hours of support from staff.

It helps that my mum is a teaching assistant too and does a lot of stuff with disabled children, she'll be able to give a hand where necessary too. I don't want to be too specific as it is but I'll keep that in mind, thanks :)

There is a lot of stuff to do with teaching of people with learning difficulties. I used to work with somebody who does this. Involving the use of speech recognition and auto readers etc.

I guess it depends what kinds of problems your kids have. I worked as a classroom support assistant a few years ago. Most of our issues were behavioral and the like. I just mean there's no point planning this huge study into support for blind children if there aren't any....

Although his performances for Brawn were not enough to guarantee his future at the team, with Rosberg's move to the Brackley-based team an open secret in F1, Williams is believed to be keen to tap into Barrichello's vast experience and speed as it continues its push back to the front of the grid.

How many open secrets are there in F1?

I hate that sometimes in F1 winning two races isn't a "good enough performance" considering when he is being placed with everybodys favourite underachiever.

    I don't want him at Williams.... :(:(

Neither do I - he has more than deserved his place at Brawn this year.

Having said that - this fulfils two opinions of mine - the first, that Nico will get the chance to prove he really is pants when put in a better car with a better team mate. I am getting annoyed at all the Nico apologists these days - how many more chances does he get?

Secondly, I opined that a better driver than Rosberg would have won in a Williams by now, and it may be the last chance the team gets to get their car back to the front. I wish Barrichello every success so he can stick two fingers up at Ross Brawn, who ironically has saved his career twice and then dumped him for someone younger and more suited to the sponsors...

I honestly think with Nico as a team mate Jenson won't look as impressive either, it's no secret how much Rubens helps set up that car.

    Well that is true...

  • Lukeh30/09/2009 at 09:58

Well we'll see what happens I suppose...

Of course there the possibility of Mercedes getting their piece of the Brawn pie by getting a german driver in over Brawn himself wanting to get rid of Barrichello. At the same time, it's blatently obvious rubens doesn;t want to retire yet and still does the job so he could be keeping his career safe by getting an alternative drive if events to happen in rosberg going to Brawn.

I just want him at Brawn... I suppose that's a little greedy when last winter even I became convinced he didn't even have a future after Honda's withdrawal and Senna's tests....

Him at Williams for me could be a good thing, I've never warmed to that team but I think thats because in all the years I've watched F1 I've never particularly liked any of their drivers. Having Rubens there might make me finally like them. Plus I'd love to see them get a win with him too (to say HAHA to Brawn and Nico who will be rubbish) so I'm already crossing my fingers for a performance improvement for them :D

He's won me over this year - I never really rated him, but it seems as though I didn't know the full story about him and Ferrari and how much he helped develop the car this year.

How funny would it be if he was champion and took the #1 to Williams next year? I wonder if he has any dirt on Brawn or Ferrari?

I know I'm bound to be biased but I honestly don't think there's any 'dirt' or anything to reveal from his point of view. He's been with the team for years with no issues, people just seemed to make something out of nothing because of his blah blah blah interview when that was a silly reaction moment of frustration from Rubens.

This blows my mind and may well be #MFC:

Researchers have demonstrated a "time telescope" that could squeeze much more information into the data packets sent around the internet.

No matter how many times I read it, the science blows my mind. And here we were yesterday claiming inductance coils were magic? :D

Good afternoon everyone, did you all have fun doing the sidepod radio? I haven't caught any of the shows yet but have all the podcasts on my ipod and im looking forward to listening!

Thought id log in and see what everyone thinks about Rubens potentially joining Williams (im sure it is an old topic now!) but particularly interested in Lukeh's thoughts? I am a Williams fan and id be ecstatic if he is coming to Grove, think we have needed an experianced driver for quite a long time now.

It's sad for Rubens that he isn't appreciated for his worth, but really exciting for Williams that they will have a proper Grand Prix driver next year.

If it means Rubens staying in the sport then yay but I really don't want him at Williams... no offence. :(

I said earlier in a comment that it's probably very greedy of me to want him at Brawn so much despite last winter's desperation of wanting a buyer for Honda. I just don't think Williams is right for him... but it is the twilight of his career so I suppose anyone is better than noone.

Would just feel strange to me him not being at Honda/Brawn... :(

I can see why you wouldn't want him in a Williams it is way too long since their last win, but they have had a good car this season but Nico has fluffed his lines when the big result looked on! and if we had 2 drivers instead of 1 I think they would have been in amongst Ferrari/Mclaren for 3rd in WCC, im more optimistic that Williams will win again now than I was a year ago. I have to admit though I don't know why Brawn are letting him go.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/09/2009 at 13:35

I'm assuming at the moment it's Mercedes related, and that Rubens is keeping a backup option available if he is indeed kicked out. I hope he isn't, he adds a lot to the team and his setups I feel are a massivel vital part to their success... but who knows. Nico Hulkenburg should benefit out of this big time if it happens, he's bound to be Williams No. 2 and who better to have as a mentor at the team than the most experienced driver in F1?

    1955? :D

They wanted to get Schumi in the car in 1995 but it didn't work out due to personal sponsorship reasons (some say Ron was to blame, others that it was a ruse because Bernie wanted him in a Ferrari as it was more lucrative for the sport for Ferrari to do well...)

I couldn't agree more, Rubens would be fantastic for 'The Hulk' to learn from and as a yardstick.

Can Rubens break 300 Grands Prix next season?

  • James30/09/2009 at 13:45

Isn't engine development supposed to be frozen? How would that affect brand new engines (see: Cosworth for next year). I don't really understand the rules around engine dev, though.

This doesn't surprise me. I wasn't really expecting to see him until off-season testing. Would they be allowed to pop him in for one of the FP sessions? I'd presume so as he's already listed as one of their race drivers for the year.

Hehehe I always used to use LCLT. It's hard to keep up with any of the breakout threads though. You just don't even know they exist.

  • Journeyer30/09/2009 at 15:46

Quite a good blog from Benson

Isn't that what people initially thought about Kimi moving to Ferrari? I wouldn't get too carried away just yet...

    Which bit?

  • Journeyer30/09/2009 at 15:48

    Which bit?

Kimi's move to Ferrari heralding a golden age, along with Alonso's move to McLaren.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)30/09/2009 at 15:49

    Which bit?

Kimi's move to Ferrari heralding a golden age, along with Alonso's move to McLaren.

Well it was a pretty good year!

I cannot wait for 2010 - I am getting all excited thinking about it - 4 WDC's in the field too - the first time since 1999!!! :D

  • Nick30/09/2009 at 15:50

Kimi's move to Ferrari heralding a golden age, along with Alonso's move to McLaren.

maybe, but that was imediatly post schumacher and people were desperate to see something. there is a lot more history between Alonso and hamilton than there was with Kimi.

It will also be great if the Bulls and the Brawn can be up there with them next season too

question. would it annoy people if we removed the "quick comment" button temporarily? i think it's the thing causing threading errors, and reply seems to make more sense in doohickey anyhow.

I pressed reply... I use quick comment much more on the iPhone.

  • me30/09/2009 at 15:54

I might boycott the doohickey in protest!

tis okay. i asked if if would bug anyone. if the answer is "yes" we won't remove it. could just do with solving the issue until we have time to bring comment moving into place.

  • me30/09/2009 at 15:54

generally the reason i get the wrong thread is that i refresh the page or opena new tab and assume its on the daily but its often not

  • Alex Andronov30/09/2009 at 15:57

I pressed reply... I use quick comment much more on the iPhone.

What happened was that I was in and involved in the conversation in the breakout thread... I wondered away from my computer... something interesting happened in the real world and I came back and forgot that there had been a breakout thread and so I just clicked on the first comment and pressed reply.

I wonder if coming back from sleep in doohicky should revert you the daily?

Yeah, it was just a thought for the future.

For reference the reason that I use the quick comment box on the iPhone is because of the way that the iPhone won't allow background processing in Safari.

When I am live commenting something I often want to let you know about the new thing I've done and read the comments since the last one. What I tend to do is use Quick comment then because it doesn't stop the comments flowing in. But it's not a biggie of course.

Very sad as my two drivers Nick and Timo still seem to have no seats next year. I am also sad that Rubens will be shoved out of the Brawn backdoor and reading between the lines that Kimi wanted to remain at Ferrari (more than the payout). I do not get this Alonso worship!

  • Nick30/09/2009 at 16:38

I'm waiting to see more details and confirmation of anything before I jump to conclusions. If he is going I'm positive it's because of Mercedes rather than Mr Brawn himself. It's all whispers and rumours at the mo remember!

  • Nick30/09/2009 at 16:42

Aww, all this talk of Alonso has made me forget about Rubens :(

I think he should retire at the end of the season. If he wins the championship i could understand him haging around for another year. but i think it would be best to go out on a high.

Williams aren't the team they once were, their talented people all get poached by the bigger teams leaving them a bit of a glorified Jordan. They haven't produced a decent car for quite a while. The Renault engine might rejuvenate them, but it hasn't exactly been a power horse this year.

  • lou30/09/2009 at 16:42

Poor Rubens! I really really want him to stay at Brawn. Silly Ross.....

Rubens and Jenson both belong in that team! they are incredible team mates and i just <3 them so much as a team and things, i'll be so sad to see that change.

  • Alison30/09/2009 at 16:42

I'm sure Mercedes gain a lot by having Ross at the team though. I'm not sure they'd get involved if he wasn't. I'm sure he could say he can't run a team without free reign over who drives for him.

  • Nick30/09/2009 at 16:43

Hey we have found something to agree on. I think Rubens has helped the Brawn Team enormously, even if he has not scored as many points as Jenson his experience is a huge benefit. I think Rubens might end up at a team that virtually no-one has discussed as an option (just hunch).

I am fairly sure Rubens will have the pick of what's left (more so than choices open to Nick and Timo - although Timo will probably have more options).

Which teams is less likely to be competing next year Sauber or Toyota?

the discussion began in the comments because they seem convinced he's about to sign for Williams

but only yesterday the following was being widely reported...

Technical director Sam Michael admits he still rates Heidfeld highly.

"Against Kubica, Nick looks very good. To say that his career is over would be ridiculous," the Australian is quoted as saying by Auto Bild Motorsport.

It is believed that Williams is looking for an experienced driver to be German rookie Nico Hulkenberg's 2010 teammate.

"Today there are many advantages to having experienced drivers, because as everyone knows there is no testing. Taking on a rookie is a risk, without a doubt," Michael added.

It looks like even a team like Williams have an embarrassment of riches in terms of driver options.

I am not jumping to any conclusions - I thinks if Rubens is shoved out of Brawn he will go to Williams (first choice). What I though might be an option which has not been speculated is Renault. Is Brazil not a big market for Renault cars and of course Carlos Ghosn is Brazilian.

I think they look quite good, the e-books are about the same price as normal books on the site, I've always found Waterstones good for ordering from, they deliver to the store which helps with not being in for deliveries. Mind you, the shop staff look at you a bit funny when you pick up 9 books in one go.. Not tried downloading though

It is from a year later but he had to work harder that year in my opinion.

  • me30/09/2009 at 18:19

yeah, but that requires bandwidth. eyetv plugs into freeview.

You can get freeview to play on your computer with a little box thingy. I don't see how that's of benefit over using an actual tv though....

that's exactly what this uses. i guess the benefit is you can record as much as your external drives can store. freeview boxes have limited drive capacity. umm... and now you can stream to your phone too, i guess.

  • James30/09/2009 at 18:26

Evening all. Just going through preview quotes for Digest. I'm surprised by the depth of feeling towards Suzuka. Every week they say it's a great track they're racing on but this time they're all proclaiming it the best in the world.

The drivers have always rated Suzuka and Spa as being the best circuits in the world. They have not been there for a couple of years so they are bound to be a bit more hyper than usual.

I think I'll start my own personal blog later on... It's gonna be different from FOFA stuff, more arty and weird as I miss that part of my experiments.

SoonZuka, here I come! Ah, I have wonderful memories of Zusuka track - 1998, 1999 and 2000 races were pure classics.

I read on Orange's F1 expert's blog (yes, Orange the phone company, it's all I can get in terms of news on our work computers that isn't blocked) and he's saying that Alain Prost is set to become Renault's new team boss.

    ...Yeah, exactly.

  • Lukeh30/09/2009 at 21:21

    ...Yeah, exactly.

I thought the Richards/Prost combination is one of the stronger rumours at the moment?

That story has been around for a few days now. There was even one saying he and David Richards would share the job.

  • Scott Woodwiss30/09/2009 at 21:22

I thought the Richards/Prost combination is one of the stronger rumours at the moment?

Oh so it's an actual rumour and not just something ludicrous?

    Nope.

It's been talked about on here in the past few days definitely. I wouldn't mind seeing it happen to be honest!

  • Nick30/09/2009 at 21:23

I thought the Richards/Prost combination is one of the stronger rumours at the moment?

Its still very possible, apparently Prost wants too much money.

But they didnt put a permenant guy in there, and i would guess its because they want him

  • Scott Woodwiss30/09/2009 at 21:27

Anyone spot this on the article on F1 Fantic about Richards and Renault (it was posted on the :16th)?:

Update: I’ve just heard from a source of my own that Richards was at the Renault factory today.

    Interesting.

  • Pat W30/09/2009 at 21:28

Oh so it's an actual rumour and not just something ludicrous?

I saw it talked about on Twitter over the weekend, not so much here. I think it is a load of rubbish tbh. Richards is far more believable.

  • Scott Woodwiss30/09/2009 at 21:29

It's funny, I mentioned Richards as a possible replacement for Flav and now there's rumours abound!

  • Jon Waldock30/09/2009 at 21:31

Is Bassano or anyone else who's going to be there tomorrow around?

If you could let them know that i'll be at the lecture but won't stay around after, am not feeling great at the moment so need to come home as soon as really, appologies!!

#GP2 (thats Bassano's personal hash tag)

I hear richards talked about more before the hearing, but after they decided to commit it has been more prost as i expect richards would want to take the team over.

    split tracks?

Like, there's the bog standard files you have on the album, then 5.1 surround sound. Someone has got the 5 split files for the surround sound from each track so you have 5 different versions of the song each playing different parts of a song and you get to hear so much more than the bog standard track off a normal album.

  • me30/09/2009 at 22:36

Its not gran turismo though, is more a series of exercises for racing drivers.

Robo- Bruce Willis? when did he become a robot!

I went to see surrogates. Bruce Willis controls a robot version of himself by the power of his mind. I'm sure this is an amazing way to allow old-Bruce to save us all.... If only it hadn't all gone so terribly wrong!

I keep seeing trailers for that. Very odd.

I've seen a ad for it on some sites. There's a building with a girl on the side in an advert and her torso is gone and all that's there some kind of artificial spine. Very weird.

I just keep seeing Bruce shouting.

It was okay. Kinda predictable. I can't help but talk through films and my friend and I had kinda sussed out the plot within the first 10 minutes. We nearly wet ourselves when everyone fell over, that bit was hilarious. Other than that.....

If Martin Whitmarsh is to be believed, McLaren haven't decided on their 2nd seat for 2010. I think this in out of respect to Heikki until he wraps up his negotiations with his new employers

    Thoughts?
