Sorry, can someone tell me where Monday went? I must have missed. I can't really say I want it back, you know, it is Monday, after all. It went rather quickly for me, what about anyone else? Meanwhile, here are some things we are discussing:

  • The F1 Rocks event have caused quite a stir in the comments when we realised we couldn't decide whether it was a success or not. Mr C has written a post on the subject, and we very much welcome your comments over there. Do you think brakes and beats should mix?
  • I think I have remembered where my Monday went - in editing podcasts. There is the finished version of F1 Debrief, if you haven't already enjoyed the live stream. Plus, make sure you have a listen to this outtake. The F1 Digest GP podcast is also available, so that should keep you entertained for at least five minutes.
  • Finally, we missed out on Fantasy Racers discussion last night, so feel free to check out where you are in the league and let us know how your team is doing. Kathi is still leading by miles, but it's still fun to hear how you're all getting on.

That'll do it for now. Let us know how you're spending your Tuesday, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

Monday did kinda disappear didn't it?

Bob Geldof was onto something. I don't like Mondays.

    #MFC http://kotaku.com/5369391/the-changing-face-of-games-journalism

I have just watched this video on how games journalism has changed, i think the nature of it as a young journalistic profession has forced it to change quicker, but its just the leading the way for the wider media in general, there are some very interesting points in there.

The one which i think has most relevence to f1 is the guy speaking at the end. He has said the rise in blogs and user generated media has forced journalists to become better. You have to prove you are good enough to do it as a profession, and be better than those who can just do the same thing for free.

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 23:10

Mmm, must remember to watch F1 Rocks tonight.

    Morning, everyone.

I was enjoying that interview... then Cliffy B started talking. Urrrrrrrrrrgh.

Good interview though, very interesting points made.

    Hey Journeyer

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:14

I should have put a health warning on it, much of the games industry seem to be massive beard fans... and I mean massive in the truest sense!

  • Steven Roy28/09/2009 at 23:36

You can get SPC in New Zealand

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:37

    done.

    Cheers :D

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 23:37

    When are you going?

I'm flying out on bonfire night. I'm not sure how to get internet tbh. I think using my phone sounds very expensive!

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 23:38

    I am not here.

Hey, Lewis is his homie. :D

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:40

    Where exactly are you going?

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 23:44

Hehe, yes... but i dont think he used the 'd' ;)

    isn't it ICE T?

Oooh, silly season gossip. And look, Timo's really not at Toyota. Joe put him at Sauber - should make RG happy.

    Must really get going now.

  • Bassano Clapper28/09/2009 at 23:45

Yes! you have to ask that!

How did he live without a blog!

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 23:47

The phone will be expensive. Are you taking a laptop?

I'm not really sure. I'm more concerned about what I'd do with it when I'm in India. I'm mainly swaying towards leaving it. I love my computer too much to kill it.

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 23:48

number #1 question for joe... how is it possible to write more than i can physically read!

Tell me about it! That goes for everyone else too. I just spent I don't know how long reading blog posts. well over an hour, nearer two. Started at 499 unread, got to 430 now.. Realised I'd been picking and choosing so I've just been working through the All Items feed in date order..

Oh and I played with the last.fm twitter plugin Lukeh uses..

  • me28/09/2009 at 23:48

How did he live without a blog!

    good question.

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 23:49

number #1 question for joe... how is it possible to write more than i can physically read!

We discussed it before I think but I don't know that he ever answered it... does he read other blogs? Which ones?

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:49

Oooh, silly season gossip. And look, Timo's really not at Toyota. Joe put him at Sauber - should make RG happy.

Its verry telling which drivers have (punctuation symbol mr c cant do) and which ones dont. Looks like Rubens is at Williams!

Someone should start hiring laptops to backpackers and other people visiting foreign countries.

I think it's called an internet cafe :P

  • Jeremy28/09/2009 at 23:55

    isn't it ICE T?

yes. He dropped the D, E and A because he knows what those letters stand for (drug enforcement agency)

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:55

I think it's called an internet cafe :P

Or you can go to an apple store if you get lucky ;)

  • Bassano Clapper28/09/2009 at 23:55

They'd most likely want your passport as a deposit

  • Steven Roy28/09/2009 at 23:55

Oooh, silly season gossip. And look, Timo's really not at Toyota. Joe put him at Sauber - should make RG happy.

I notice there are no Americans listed for USF1 and Nakajima is on their list. How is that even a remote possibility?

The other thing that stands out is that there are all these extra seats and only three drivers quoted with no F1 experience. That is disappointing

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 23:56

Kindle not liked by Princeton students as an academic tool

Hehehe their complaints are hillarious! They don't like it because you can't draw on it.....

  • Steven Roy28/09/2009 at 23:57

I think it's called an internet cafe :P

I am thinking of people being able to pick up a laptop and return it before they leave the country rather than visiting somewhere for an hour a day or whatever.

  • Bassano Clapper28/09/2009 at 23:57

Hehehe their complaints are hillarious! They don't like it because you can't draw on it.....

Highlighting text is quite important, as is quoting a page number to paper readers of the same material

Soft/firmware update could maybe fix these though

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:57

I notice there are no Americans listed for USF1 and Nakajima is on their list. How is that even a remote possibility?

Toyota engines are probably the most expensive in F1...

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 23:57

Oh and I played with the last.fm twitter plugin Lukeh uses..

    any good?

Will find out at the weekend. It is supposed to tweet your 3 most-listened-to artists that week on a Saturday night or Sunday morning. So I'll find out then. But it seems like a very strange time to do it... especially since in the old days before they went to live stats, LFM updated at midday Sunday.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 23:58

Just reading GP+ on their 50 issiues... looks like joe has 'a list' too... :D

  • Jeremy28/09/2009 at 23:58

The phone will be expensive. Are you taking a laptop?

prepaid phone credit with data allowance is prolific in Aust. I'm not sure if NZ is the same

  • Bassano Clapper28/09/2009 at 23:59

Toyota engines are probably the most expensive in F1...

They are when you have to have Big Mac A Jima too :)

  • me28/09/2009 at 23:59

he needs a playground and then he's all set.

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 00:00

They'd most likely want your passport as a deposit

They could get a credit card deposit like car hire companies do. The business model already exists. I am sure they could write some software that only allowed files to be downloaded to usb drives. There is a lot of money to be made from something like this.

Imagine if Alison could pick up a laptop in New Zealand for £50 for a couple of months with mobile broadband as an optional extra. Given the average cost of a simple laptop it would only need to be hired out ten times to pay for itself.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 00:00

Highlighting text is quite important, as is quoting a page number to paper readers of the same material

In what edition? Paper books never have the same stuff on the same page as each other. Quite obviously it depends on what size the pages are, how big the font is, the margins, the way you space it out..... No two books are alike.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 00:00

Toyota engines are probably the most expensive in F1...

hehe... thats what i meant ;)

Did you guys do the gridwalk bingo on sunday?

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 00:03

Imagine if Alison could pick up a laptop in New Zealand for £50 for a couple of months with mobile broadband as an optional extra. Given the average cost of a simple laptop it would only need to be hired out ten times to pay for itself.

That sounds like a really good idea....

You could even use those One laptop per child things to keep costs down... they are pretty hardy, and if you got them made in a different colour they would be pretty worthless to steal

  • Bassano Clapper29/09/2009 at 00:04

    Fair enough

But page 54 of Edition III is still sourceable

Quoting a Kindle page number is of little use to most at this stage

I think not being able to make notes on a page is quite important too

    Early days...

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 00:05

You could even use those One laptop per child things to keep costs down... they are pretty hardy, and if you got them made in a different colour they would be pretty worthless to steal

You can buy a laptop in PC World for about £300. Imagine if you were buying in bulk form the manufacturer. You would pay half of that.

  • Jeremy29/09/2009 at 00:05

insurance is the killer. And the cost to hire out is usally too high. Just buy a laptop for £350 when you arrive and sell it for £200 when you're leaving.

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 00:06

That's a lot of money to drop and assumes you can find a buyer at the right time.

  • Bassano Clapper29/09/2009 at 00:07

They could get a credit card deposit like car hire companies do.

In a lot of SE Asia, they take your passport to even hire a moped

You break it, you'll definitely pay for it

How many laptops would be broken or damaged

Still, people would go for it but I'd say it's be more expensive

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 00:08

insurance is the killer. And the cost to hire out is usally too high. Just buy a laptop for £350 when you arrive and sell it for £200 when you're leaving.

I'll probably see if I can borrow a battered computer from my friends that live out there.... I can still see the same security issues with hostelling in NZ though.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 00:08

But page 54 of Edition III is still sourceable

Doesn't matter if you have a credit card deposit apart from the inconvenience of repair or replacement

  • Jeremy29/09/2009 at 00:09

That's a lot of money to drop and assumes you can find a buyer at the right time.

the problem is the rental company has to charge more than £50 a month to make money

  • Jeremy29/09/2009 at 00:11

I think not being able to make notes on a page is quite important too

    Early days...

let's see what Apple comes up with eh? ;-)

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 00:11

I need to save money for a bit of car hire to get round the coast properly. I'll live without a computer. I had no computer for nearly a year last year because I was too poor to buy a new one.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 00:12

I think not being able to make notes on a page is quite important too

    Early days...

    I can't think of a time that I've written in a book.....

  • Jeremy29/09/2009 at 00:13

I'm sure AMY Research Partners Ltd will let you know about prepaid for your network independent mobile phone

  • Bassano Clapper29/09/2009 at 00:13

let's see what Apple comes up with eh? ;-)

I really want a Notebook type machine and so hope they put something out before Easter

Otherwise, I think I might pick up a second hand BlackBook

24" iMac to upgrade to as well if they go Quad Core

My list is too costly :)

  • Bassano Clapper29/09/2009 at 00:14

If they can buy for £200 and keep the computer for two years they should be able to make a nice profit at less than £50 a month.

Every town will have an internet cafe

Yeah exactly. I'm not so sure they're so keen on you sleeping in there.... :P

    righto, must sleep. nights all.

I really dont see what the point was in that hearing in any case

I meant about the need for the witness to be anonymous... if his evidence was true both of the accused would have known who he was...

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 00:49

one could also argue about the ethics of anonymous witnesss...

Of course. But I think that argument should be separate to whether or not to reveal the identity of a specific witness.

Obviously the whole point of a court is about weighing up probabilities and if you don't know who said what, you can't give a proper estimate. But once the decision to allow an annonymous testimony has been taken, I think that shoud be respected.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 00:53

I meant about the need for the witness to be anonymous... if his evidence was true both of the accused would have known who he was...

And for all we know it could have been them who outed them.

Still the list of potential people must be very short to be in a position to hear what he did

Still the list of potential people must be very short to be in a position to hear what he did

But not known by you and me, not known by his family, his friends, his future employer. It's a big step to go from presumption of an identity to being properly outed.

True, but it hasnt been officialy confirmed.

He must have known he would be informaly identified as he formed such a significant part of the prosecution

Why? You shouldn't have to expect that. If people had any sense, they'd just leave the whole affair where it lay. Speculation about their identity is immoral in my opinion. Gossip by all means if that's what amuses you, but publishing that in the press is another matter entirely.

Its F1 though... people cant keep non technical secrets.

If it was a murder case i would agree, but to be honest as i see it the anonimity was just to say he didnt want to high profile in his actions, and that was achived.

    Hello all

    evening!

  • Joe in Fla29/09/2009 at 01:07

I think it's no different. This could destroy a career. It already ruined 3... There's one more person that knew before it happened. That can't be good for you if you're that person to be outed....

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:07

Does anyone know why Montoya has changed from target sponsorship to polaroid?

Perhaps, but he tried to stop it. I dont think anyone blames him for not going to the FIA, in fact the other teams probably admire him more and his stocks have risen...

  • Joe in Fla29/09/2009 at 01:09

Does anyone know why Montoya has changed from target sponsorship to polaroid?

    they change sponorships because

Target carries polaroid and you'll see numerous other possibilites as Target has lots of products they carry

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:09

Not much, just reading GP+ and watching nascar highlights

  • Joe in Fla29/09/2009 at 01:11

Exactly. If you are not familiar with Target, they are like an upscale Walmart

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:11

You think? I disagree. Why is there such a backlash against Piquet then?

There is one set of people who think he should have stoppped it and not done it, he had the power witness X didnt.

The other group think regardless of that he shouldnt have betrayed the team, and is thus an undesirable driver to have as he could turn on you. Mr X did the opposite of this and kept quiet untill he had to speak out to help the team...

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 01:11

Also there are ways to stop it happening that don't involve the FIA. All he needed to do was call someone senior at Renault. They'd soon have dealt with it. It'd be too dangerous not to.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:12

Its possible, but they could have fired him, they could have fired others, he may not have even been in a position to do that.

Why would they fire him? That'd be a bad play. Say senior Renault staff are involved in the conspiracy, there's no surer way for it to come out than sack a whistleblower..... They'd have had to deal with it, whether it's a quiet word in Flav's ear or a discrete resignation. Whatever they wanted, they'd have had all the cards.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:16

They could have sacked him, branded him a trouble maker and called it all off... destroying his career in the process....

Im not saying it would have happened, but undermining your 2 bosses is quite a huge thing to do, even if you tell them it was wrong

You will have to get GP+ to find out his name... but i can tell you he worked at renault :P

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 01:21

I just think that naming anonymous witnesses is wrong. If you think they shouldn't be allowed then that's fine, you have to disallow them at the time. You can't go around naming people afterwards. Officially, unofficially, any way. If people in the paddock know, there's no need to publish that. I hope the guy sues.

  • Joe in Fla29/09/2009 at 01:22

Maybe, although i see it as more flav did him over so he just returned the favour.

I still cant believe flav sacked the guy knowing this could happen, i guess that says a lot about his ego.

  • Joe in Fla29/09/2009 at 01:29

Maybe, although i see it as more flav did him over so he just returned the favour.

Good point, but I think the perception still is, if you do the guy "wrong" (real or not) he'll leave normal channels and attack us

All he said was that the paddock rumour is mr x is Y.Z. renault were asked and a denial was not forthcoming.

I dont know if there are any grounds he can sue on.

I would agree in some cases anonymous witnesses are necessary and should be protected. In this case it was completely unnecessary, protections shouldnt have been expected or provided after the case...

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:32

maybe, but i think he was pretty had done by, all flavs theatrics on the pit wall didnt help...

He may have that image, but if a team does no wrong like they should, they shouldnt have anything to worry about...

You can't invite people to give evidence anonymously then allow them to be outed. You just can't. I think it's plain wrong. If you're not willing to protect someone's anonymity, you need to tell them from the outset.

I think it's defamation of character? I'd presume there's no proof?

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:37

Maybe, but its the FIA providing the guarentee not the legal system... They provided the anonymity, but noone else is bound to do so, unlike in a civil or criminal case.

I think it's defamation of character? I'd presume there's no proof?

If he took it to court the FIA could face a subpoena to reveal who it was... in any case it would pour loads more publicity onto the case

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 01:38

I do understand where you are coming from saying he should have been protected though.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 01:40

I don't really care about the legality. I think "outing" the witness is plain pathetic. I just wish that people wouldn't engage in it particularly not people I thought had some integrity.

I just don't think it matters what situation it's in. I'm not really for anonymous witnesses generally. But I think speculation about their identity whatever they've done is unnecessary and pointless.

from your discussion yesterday you were wrong. I would not have to choose between finns and backstreet because they were not part of f1 rocks, their show was right after the race at the stage just behind the padang grandstand. Best of both worlds! Also i see in the news today that muse are headlining our biggest summer music festival. I feel like lukeh will harm me if i dont go.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 03:04

Do you think shouting in the comments can cross continents?

  • F1Wolf29/09/2009 at 03:12

the BB were behind the Turn one grandstands on Sat afternoon. no prior warning before entering the track resulted in shock that I may never recover from. that was the blackest moment of my F1 live. I saw backstreet boys live on stage and there are witnesses ... the moment we realized that it is not a bad dream but sad reality we rushed away but that is no excuse. that should never have happened. I still hope there is no photo evidence that may come to haunt me

  • Amy29/09/2009 at 03:23

shouting will only cross continents if the person you are shouting at has a head pinger installed.

Morning all, Tis a really nice morning in Copenhagen :)

Finally, we missed out on Fantasy Racers discussion last night, so feel free to check out where you are in the league and let us know how your team is doing. Kathi is still leading by miles, but it’s still fun to hear how you’re all getting on.

We did. I seem to be doing OK.

Speaking of which, I posted my Fantasy Racers Analysis for the Singapore Grand Prix last night - why not take a look and leave a comment?

one other favour to ask of commentors. it would be cool if we could put together some audio feedback from people who subscribe to gp+ to drop into the shows.

  • Stuart C29/09/2009 at 10:56

    I've just left a voicemail.

    Spinning back through today's comments...

I have just watched this video on how games journalism has changed, i think the nature of it as a young journalistic profession has forced it to change quicker, but its just the leading the way for the wider media in general, there are some very interesting points in there.

I briefly worked on a games mag in the mid-1990s so I see where you're coming from. It was quite an underpaid profession even then, because so many people wanted to do it (play games? write about them? get in!). Even though I was just starting out, I could see that it wouldn't last in its (then) present form. Most of my day was spent culling tips/cheats from web sites in response to reader letters – just about okay when not that many people were on-line, and even then on 14kbps (tops) connections. Wouldn't cut it now, of course. In any case, I found the debates over ratings tedious.

A very, very positive outcome of the internet's predominance is that distributors can no longer try to strangle bad reviews at source when they have a stinker on their hands by not issuing review copies until the day of release. Toxic word-of-mouth can now kill off a bad game in hours (obviously, though, there will always be a segment of the population who will buy a particular game even though they've been told it's awful; and there's that other segment, the much maligned 'casual gamer', who often buys games on the strength of the licence/tie-in).

  • Alianora La Canta29/09/2009 at 11:02

    What can he sue for? The WMSC have no legal authority. {Comment #151}

Defamation, libel, deliberate contract frustration... ...it's a pretty long list. I'd go so far as to say the list would be shorter if it had been a real court that laid down the judgement, because it would be a straightforward case of suing for compensation then.

The WMSC has no legal authority in itself, but the FIA takes it at its word and the FIA can only be overruled by a court. The point remains that a court can overrule it if so inclined, though the onus is now on Flavio to prove the WMSC, the FIA and/or the witnesses in Renault's defence were wrong.

That would reduce the Kindle's usefulness to me as an academic tool - my lecture and book notes are partly composed sentences but also resemble a combination of mind maps and flowcharts, so if the Kindle was going to be useful for the sort of annotation I do, it would need to allow drawing as well as writing.

My PDA permits both, though annoyingly I have to use a third-party application to do it.

On such a tiny screen, so what

Exporting to a large screen, if poss, may be appealing but I have a media player & a portable external drive for that [and 1080p]

  • Bassano Clapper29/09/2009 at 11:45

i think so. i don't understand it though.

Briefly reading it's seems to be a magnetic induction thingy

Magnets and electrickery go hand in hand

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 11:46

It looks like putting it in that magnetic stand is important for the charging? If so, that reduces its utility somewhat?

  • me29/09/2009 at 11:47

On such a tiny screen, so what

same argument as before. i want hd to be the standard format for video. i want our videos to be hd, but we have to downscale them for the ipod.

the ipod is hd capable, but apple haven't enabled it. the cynic in me says that's because they are fast running out of new features, so are now drip feeding us stuff in order to upsell. fm radio, anyone?

there is no technical reason for the ipod not to support hd.

we need zune to prevent apple from faffing us around.

It looks like putting it in that magnetic stand is important for the charging? If so, that reduces its utility somewhat?

good point. so wireless, but no wifi?

  • Stuart C29/09/2009 at 11:49

The tech has been lurking around for a while, my architect housemate at uni designed a building which was 90% wireless power. no idea how it works, but ive seen how it can be implemented....

  • Stuart C29/09/2009 at 11:54

    It’s magic.

I was wrong. Clive Mantle out of Casualty does it.

Wireless things creep me out a bit. I'm not entirely convinced all these different signals flying around aren't frying us from the inside out....

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 11:57

the ipod is hd capable, but apple haven't enabled it. the cynic in me says that's because they are fast running out of new features, so are now drip feeding us stuff in order to upsell. fm radio, anyone?

I think thats exactly what it is...

I think ultimatly HD is a stop gap technology, likely to be maily of use to mobile devices and short clips in the future. 3D is where we are going, i just need a pair of 3d contacts and we are all set!

  • startledbunny29/09/2009 at 11:58

Tesla managed to do it many years ago.

It's like splitting an electric transformer apart. The voltage in has no connection to the voltage out.

Oh wait a minute, just spotted you said boffin...

I kinda dont want benie to do to HD because it will stop us going to 3D for years.

I would rather he waits on the HD upgrade and leapfrogged to 3D.

Its happening soon, the first 3DHD games are supposed to becoming out next year

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 12:04

I have an odd semi-blindness thing. I can't see it properly. I really hope it doesn't catch on. My optician reckons I don't see anything properly 3D in real life or anything. I can't see how that's true though, I'd be lethal behind the wheel surely?

I wish I could work out what other people see, it'd be a revelation.

the size of our living rooms will likely halt the adoption of even greater quality hd too. we just won't be able to sit far enough aware from the screens.

the technology will be there, but only of use in piccadilly circus.

I use one eye for distance and the other for seeing things close up. My right eye is incapable of seeing anything in focus beyond the length of my arm. Even when I wear contacts, my brain's so used to processing like that, that it just gives me headaches. It's all a bit odd. But apparently without two eyes, you can't really get the proper 3D vision thing going on.....

I don't know if you've had an adequate answer to the wireless charging on that laptop but this one isn't using the really cool of the future resonance technology but the simple induction technology... Same thing that charges electric toothbrushes. Which cant have actual contact points in the bathroom.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 12:53

They are fimed simulatinously digitaly so you dont have the alignement problems of earlier ones i belive.

They polarize the picture instead of a double projection in two colours so the glasses appear transparent instead of the coloured ones they had before

So that's not an explanation is it... Have you seen iron filings arrange themselves around a magnet showing a magnetic field?

This works the same way... Electric current passing through a coil creates a similar field. This will excite electrons in another coil and make them move. The same way that it makes the iron filings move.

This is used in every transformer you have. The coils have a different number of coils and a different gaps between coils which causes the step transformer to actually step down. It is slightly more complicated to make them work when they are not really really close to each other but not impossible.

However they still need to be pretty close hence the pad.

The more modern wireless transmitters of energy are supposed to work by making vibrations in the air using sound waves which excite certain materials, but they aren't available outside labs.

hat is true. Rumour has it (well The Guardian says) that all three companies (O2, Vodafone and Orange) have negotiated that they do not have to revenue share with Apple as O2 has done for the last 2 years. I don't see CVC as the type who cares about the long run, they care about the here and now. Joe did mention that:

CVC Capital Partners has a finite term on the fund that owns F1 and that means that the company needs to be in a position to sell the business by 2015.

At this rate, Ferrari will be the last ones to know about it...

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 16:19

hehe, i have a cap on mine, and i have a mic with a switch....

I can't even work out where the microphone is!! I was expecting error messages when I pressed record, instead I heard my own voice coming out the computer. Most disconcerting. On the plus side, I could have skype conversations without my stupid phone thing.

  • Journeyer29/09/2009 at 16:19

Seems like the right thing to say to me. He is trying to highlight that Bernie has Todt in his back pocket but if Ari get in he will take Bernie on.

But F1 isn't just Bernie - it's the teams, the drivers, the fans, everyone involved.

The idea is good but the soundbite is awful.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 16:20

Hello invisible Steven. What are you supposed to be doing?

  • jpancoast29/09/2009 at 16:27

I don't see CVC as the type who cares about the long run, they care about the here and now. Joe did mention that:

Unfortunately most businesses don't look past the next few years, so I agree with you.

Seems like the right thing to say to me. He is trying to highlight that Bernie has Todt in his back pocket but if Ari get in he will take Bernie on.

He is providing an alternative. He's right in that F1 != FIA but that is how it seems to everyone else by the way they act.

Just so long as it isn't Eddie Jordan asking the question we should be fine, although Alonso has never raced for any of his teams.

Just glanced over the championship standings, Hekki now has the same number of points as Massa #sorryamy. and his individual score, is one more than the two BMW drivers.

You have to wonder what Massa would have done in the last few races with that car.

  • Felipe Leite29/09/2009 at 17:32

I saw that in yesterday's F1 Big Picture Christine said that Felipe would be back in action (kart action) early next week.

Actually it is way better than that. Massa was kart racing yesterday afternoon in Granja Viana's kart track for some time until it started to rain (heavily) - Granja Viana is where is held the 500 Miles at the end of the year. This race track is owned by Barrichello's brother in law (Felipe Giaffone, former indy race driver).

And as a curious note, yesterday night I went there to race! At the same track, at the same day of Massa's return! :) It was my first time in a real kart track, and as it rained a lot before our race, the track was completely wet. Everyone was on slick tyres, so we were all impersonating Massa in Silverstone 2008. It was lots of fun! :)

What a way to avoid an answer :D

Q: Much has been made of the superiority of the Mercedes engine. How much of the VJM02's brilliant performance of late is down to the team's choice of engine supplier?

SR: The choice of engine has really helped us from a reliability point of view. We are happy with the relationship and we get fantastic support from the guys in Brixworth, who help in the garage and back at the factory. I'm not sure how the performance can be compared to other engines, as we have limited experience with other engines under the new regulations, so you can't make direct comparisons. All we can say is that we are happy - it's reliable, it's got good performance and we have been able to develop a very quick car around it. That's what counts - the whole package.

I mentioned what you said earlier and mr c said that radio 2 reported it as confirmed too so I think radio land in general is being silly. They need radio training... perhaps they should listen to the hourly Sidepodradio updates from Christine to learn how to do it right!

Yes, I will get some by tomorrow - I was not with my own camera (doh!) But some guys that were there filmed some of the race and I will receive a video tomorrow.

do you have your own kart or were you using someone elses?

Nope, those were for rent karts, 13hp, top speed of 80 km/h. :) It was a friendly race, with some guys from my work. We had 18 people on track, 4 women. I finished in 11th (boo me), but the track was really, really tricky. My fastest time was the 7th fastest of the race, so my problem was the "Felipe Massa effect" - I've spun in 9 of the 15 laps - it was a 30 minutes race.

Nick was the FOM pitlane guy too...

@alexyoong: Lotus is a great brand with history. Success & a good commercial platform should attract sponsors from around d world. Lot of sleeping fans.

Interesting thought but as someone who grew up as a Lotus fan I will not be supporting this team just because they have the same name.

I don';t see why it shouldn't be published, then Nick respond with his reasoning. Seems a bit stupid to moderate it when you have nothing to back up your argument judging on his lack of willingness to respond to Mr C's question

He seems very bitter about his time in F1. TBH I normally get quite annoyed at MWM's coverage of F1 and what a certain person said about my blog (off air), but it is good banter...

I don't know. Hindy is an awesome sportscar commentator and I think he pretends he doesn't like F1 when I really think he does - I have heard parts of the commentary he did for Brazil '08 and he was his usual self...

I suspect Nick was released after Bernie's FOM TV failure - it was mentioned he doesn't have a press pass anymore which is why he is quite outspoken.

However, for example when Hindy has another of his baseless rants about Hamilton it is Nick who sticks up for Hamilton...

I can honestly imagine EJ to be a laugh to have a drink with, but as you say, as a TV pundit it doesn't work for him. It's that role that makes us annoying him so much, I think it was you yourself mr c that mentioned the other day that as a team owner you enjoyed him but as a tv pundit you loathe him

there must be someone. it's crazy to say we have a choice of one person in the whole of f1 who can stand there and talk about f1.

  • Pat W29/09/2009 at 18:54

i bet it will be, i don't see the beeb changing anyone sadly.

I can see why they'd keep him. He brings experience and character and has long been the go-to-guy on any F1 story on the TV/radio news. I think he may even have been right a couple of times.

  • RG29/09/2009 at 18:54

there must be someone. it's crazy to say we have a choice of one person in the whole of f1 who can stand there and talk about f1.

I think some of it is connections. I know we make fun of EJ saying he's invented everything in F1 but he had a lot of current personnel go through his team & I wonder whether they sometimes get access/stories because of who he is

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 18:56

there must be someone. it's crazy to say we have a choice of one person in the whole of f1 who can stand there and talk about f1.

Its a pretty specific job... you need somone who knows loads about F1, has a history in the sport which the viewers will recognise, and be willing to do every race (except china ;) )

    Other options:

    Flav (Just NO!)

    Ron (Probably not interested)

Stoddart (Would be good, but not sure if he would either)

Jackie Stewart (Not sure how willing he would be to commit to the workload)

    Pat Symonds (not allowed in!)

Cant really think of any other recent team owners, maybe Tom Wilkinshaw, but i dont think he would be that recognised

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 18:58

I don't think they need to be recognisable necessarily. No-one would have associated Jake with F1 before this season started and he's done a really good job.

How do they know? Did they have an ACE in orbit 40 years ago?

Where else would they go to restock when they drop ther tool kits?

    ACE is the place!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/09/2009 at 19:28

    Gotta have burnt bits!

    Mmmm cancerous burnt bits....

    Huh?

    Mmmm cancerous burnt bits....

Love burnt bits off the grill...

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 19:29

If it doesn't come with instructions it won't get cooked.

    I googled it ...(litteraly)

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 19:29

    Huh?

It's really bad for you to eat burnt food. Obviously not in Denmark ;)

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 19:29

How do they know? Did they have an ACE in orbit 40 years ago?

They have been monitoring cosmic rays, sunspot activity and the sun's magnetic field for years. They don't need to measure it at Mars because they know what is hitting the Earth

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 19:30

It's really bad for you to eat burnt food. Obviously not in Denmark ;)

Really? Didn't know that. Does that include things like rolls that have been a little bit burned?

  • jpancoast29/09/2009 at 19:31

shuck the corn, soak it in a brine (dissolve salt in water, toss the corn in) then grill it, turning frequently.

    AWESOME.

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 19:31

Really? Didn't know that. Does that include things like rolls that have been a little bit burned?

It's the carbonation of the food. So yeah eating anything burnt or standing near the BBQ or grill.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 19:32

shuck the corn, soak it in a brine (dissolve salt in water, toss the corn in) then grill it, turning frequently.

    Remove husk. Place in oven.

    Huh?

It's really bad for you to eat burnt food. Obviously not in Denmark ;)

I'm not talking about burnt food, but burnt bits - like the corners of lasagne and BBQ corn/peppers etc.

According to experts these days, everything from Facebook to Coffee to Marriage causes Cancer so I don't believe that burnt food is any better or worse!

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 19:33

It's really bad for you to eat burnt food. Obviously not in Denmark ;)

I think this is another old wives tale like 5-a-day

    BAH!

  • me29/09/2009 at 19:33

My corn doesnt come in plastic wrapping, it has a husk!

If it doesn't come with instructions it won't get cooked.

    oi!

Hehehe you crazy Kiwis.... I did mean it to be a bit tongue and cheek but it is pretty well backed by fact. I wasn't suggesting you stop BBQing.

  • Andy Taylor29/09/2009 at 19:34

    Remove husk. Place in oven.

Um, with instructions like that, Mr C would end up with raw corn on the cob, but in the oven. Eventually it would rot.

  • me29/09/2009 at 19:34

They've done lots of metallica songs and their own stuff is good too.

    We have seen the evidence

  • jpancoast29/09/2009 at 19:36

I think you mean caramelization :). Beer and soda is carbonated, never tried to carbonate beef, though, to be honest :)

When you burn toast that isn't caramelised. I'm pretty sure it's carbon deposits?

  • 2008 SPC-land Fantasy Racers Champions Jordan F129/09/2009 at 19:39

Well the current 2008 Sidepodcastland Fantasy Racers Champions ==> Jordan F1 are currently in 329th spot in the Sidepodcast League, and have fallen 25 spots to 2601st overall. Resources have been now devoted to the 2010 challenger but the trophy will not be surrenderred until the end of the current season....

Jordan F1 takes pleasure that it is beating arch-rival and cousin-led Fred Hada's Freddie Fender team. More enjoyment would be obtained from this, however, if it where not for the fact that this is one of the few teams that Mr. C's Longitudinal Inertia has beaten thoughout the season. Currently a 4 point point gap exists between these two teams.

I get used to it. Austria's the worst place I've ever been for food. They seem to live off these mystery meat dumpling things.... I tend to live off pasta when I'm abroad. That or salads that I pick the meat off of.....

I'm properly veggie. I just dislike cream, butter, egg, milk. Yoghurt or cheese can be tolerated but not enjoyed particularly.

Protein is no issue at all. You just need pulses or chickpeas or something like that. I use fortified soya instead of milk that has a lot of calcium in it as well as the vit B12s that you can't get from plants.

  • 2008 SPC-land Fantasy Racers Champions Jordan F129/09/2009 at 20:06

    Hey Mr. C!

I found a real Fantasy Racers team in the Sidepodcast League that was formed before Austrailia this year that is doing worse than your team. You currently lead them by 6 points....

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 20:06

I has dropped aside 11 transcript. I beat Mr C's editing! Now I sleep for 3.75 hours.

What kind of weird schedule are you on?

  • Janna29/09/2009 at 20:06

I still think it's complicated to be vegan and admire people who have the commitment to follow their principles. You would think you could add Worcestershire sauce to your meals but I I learnt the other day that Lea & Perrins has anchovies in. There must be loads of things like that out there.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/09/2009 at 20:07

I bet i could argue they arent! :P

    How so?

Because they're made of Red Bulls? Bulls are animals - ergo it isn't vegetarian ;)

  • Steven Roy29/09/2009 at 20:07

They sound delicious but not necessarily nutricious!

The 0.75 of an hour is decimal time for 45 minutes. Decimal time is great for filling out logs. Basically every 6 minutes is 0.1 hour.

  • Pat W29/09/2009 at 20:10

Anyway. Time for a cup of tea then I should do some blog stuff.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 20:10

    How so?

I developed this theory when arguing with my step sister....

If Vegans are morally opposed to not only using the end product of meat, but also by-products such as leather, then any crop which is raised being fertilised with natural manure is therefore unsuitable for Vegans.

With all the ingredients in red bulkl and the recipe there is a decent chance one of them was raised organicly and therefore not suitable for Vegans...

Her response to me was to call me an idiot, which i took as a victory!

  • Andy Taylor29/09/2009 at 20:11

Because they're made of Red Bulls? Bulls are animals - ergo it isn't vegetarian ;)

Red Bull themselves confirm that their drink is vegan, kosher and halal.

  • Janna29/09/2009 at 20:12

I think that theory falls down as you need to kill the animal for meat or leather but it needs to be alive to produce manure so manure production preserves the animal which is surely the purpose of vegetarianism

  • Alison29/09/2009 at 20:13

Her response to me was to call me an idiot, which i took as a victory!

I think the response to that is that just because you can't cut it all out, doesn't mean you can justify not trying at all.

Anyways, I just like not eating dairy so I don't. You murder away.

  • Andy Taylor29/09/2009 at 20:13

"Did you know that the oil used to power the machines that made your clothes comes from dinosaurs?"

I think that theory falls down as you need to kill the animal for meat or leather but it needs to be alive to produce manure so manure production preserves the animal which is surely the purpose of vegetarianism

Surely that depends on whether or not farmed animals produce the manure.

I think that theory falls down as you need to kill the animal for meat or leather but it needs to be alive to produce manure so manure production preserves the animal which is surely the purpose of vegetarianism

Ah but the animals are required to be farmed, they are farmed for meat or dairy, both are against vegan principles. The farmer profits from the sale of manure the same as he profits from the sale of milk...

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 20:18

Surely that depends on whether or not farmed animals produce the manure.

Its not efficnet to gather manure from non farmed animals... In most cased from non intensively farmed animals.

What is her stand on wool? Or whatever feathers are stuffed into her comforter that keeps her warm in the winter?

I really think that on a biological level, there's really not that much difference between plants and animals except that one group useds that exhaled gas of the other group as its breathing gas. Now before you say that animals move, please take a good look at coral.

That would be the University of Guelph. Known thoughout Ontario, Canada as "Cow College". The reason being that they specialize in argiculture, veterian schoo, horticulture and other farming related courses.

something that just came to mind. here's a post written many moons ago:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/2007/05/30/bloggers-and-podcasting/

the gist of which is... why don't bloggers use f1 podcasts to generate posts, and for that matter, why don't f1 journalists either?

i think that rings just as true today, as it ever did. for some reason podcasts are ignored, yet if you put the same info into a press release it would get copied around the web in seconds.

listening back to this episode of "aside" there are three of four stories that can be garnered from joe's thoughts, that i doubt any other blogger will pick up on.

so why not try and create a couple of blog posts from the aside podcasts and then link back to joe's site. he'll see those links and likely pay more attention given you're listen to his words (probably).

the same could be said of the renault podcast, the force india podcast and so on, and on.

anyhow, i've said it all before, just thought it might be a good way to generate yourself some original posts and traffic. thoughts?

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 21:29

listening back to this episode of "aside" there are three of four stories that can be garnered from joe's thoughts, that i doubt any other blogger will pick up on.

Ooh that is a good idea! ...shotgun stories 1 and 3, you guys can fight over 2 and 4 ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss29/09/2009 at 21:30

so why not try and create a couple of blog posts from the aside podcasts and then link back to joe's site. he'll see those links and likely pay more attention given you're listen to his words (probably).

Agreed, I'm actually liking this idea. So you mean something like.

"Listening to the latest Aside with Joe, he spoke about..." etc etc etc?

  • Scott Woodwiss29/09/2009 at 21:30

they are taking their sweet time.

it actually sounds like something that renault attempted and then failed to deliver on a while back. they were trying to reach out to the second tier of web sites that don't have paddock passes and don't get out much. i guess mcalren are doing a similar thing?

essentially speak on the phone and avoid the requirement for fia approval.

    the red/green glasses didn’t work for me, I have a lazy eye. {Comment #322}

They don't work for me either because my brain parses everything viewed through such glasses into the red stuff, the green stuff and the brown stuff (according to which lens(es) the light reflected from that point comes through). Apart from the change in colours, it's exactly like wearing my normal glasses, which is not the effect the designers intended.

  • Alianora La Canta29/09/2009 at 22:37

Are you suggesting someone on the BBC F1 coverage is wearing a syrup?

    i’m gonna bet it’s not lee or jake… {Comment #365}

I have no confirmation of this, but I believe it's Eddie Jordan who wears a wig on BBC F1 coverage.

    And as a curious note, yesterday night I went there to race! At the same track, at the same day of Massa’s return! :) It was my first time in a real kart track, and as it rained a lot before our race, the track was completely wet. Everyone was on slick tyres, so we were all impersonating Massa in Silverstone 2008. It was lots of fun! {Comment #478}

I'm so used to it and I cannot stand the cold.. but it isn't an insurmountable problem. It has plugin electric heaters.. could be expensive.. but that's fine. Will buy a big duvet!

If you need them it might be a problem!

I have storage heaters... you just need to tweak them and open windows

I think the correct translation is "We don't know and we wouldn't tell you if we did". If you remember that the interviewee is on secondment from McLaren, the answer makes perfect sense.

  • Nick29/09/2009 at 22:51

I havent had any problems with that... you do need to pay attention if you miscaluculate and it gets too hot...

...opening the windows in the middle of a storm might be a problem ;)

Well I'm hoping it won't be too bad. It is above another similar size maisonette, and is a terrace so I have one each side as well. Should be a reasonable temperature most of the time.. should be.. he says hopefully..

I've had those before. Lovely and warm - bit of a pain when they run out.

  • Jon Waldock29/09/2009 at 23:15

dosent have to be, you wont necessarily be able to see it in the pitlane, they usually use wets first thing on a cold session.

  • Alianora La Canta29/09/2009 at 23:19

I had my first Medical/Legal Word/Audio Processing class today. It was a bit of an eye-opener. Firstly we all got given Text Processing Level 2 practise papers as a test to see how good we were.

18 minutes later, I handed my paper in to be marked (the test limit is 1 hour and 15 minutes, but there was no point spending longer on the exercise because there were no errors remaining). Afterwards, I got told that unlike the other students I could skip the Text Processing module and get straight to the medical stuff. This was a relief for me as I'd done Text Processing Level 2 two years ago, didn't really see much point doing it twice and was a bit surprised that it was even on the course syllabus. I spent the rest of the class working from the medical word processing book, at which point the teacher took a look at my work and decided that I needed something more challenging (odd considering I hadn't seen the book before).

The upshot is that I will be the only member of class doing Legal Word Processing (in the summer), which is a bit strange given that I thought we were all supposed to be doing both disciplines. My teacher seemed to think it was a bit strange having to rewrite the course syllabus halfway into the first class. Oh well...

Sounds good. It always amuses me when you know you can do something, so you try telling them, and they insist on giving you the levels below anyway... and you complete them in what seems to them to be record time. I've been a couple of recruitment agencies who gave me a typing test...

It always amuses me when you know you can do something, so you try telling them, and they insist on giving you the levels below anyway… and you complete them in what seems to them to be record time.

The trouble is that it's a course requirement that everyone holds a Text Processing Level 2 by the end of the course, but it isn't necessary to have one to enrol. Most of the people on the course had been sent by local hospitals which have rather tight training budgets. As a result, there were only two people on the course who had a Level 2 - and the other one appeared to have forgotten half of what was taught on that course and is therefore having to re-take the exam as a sort of revision/confidence-booster.

I had told the tutor during the ice-breaker exercise that I had Level 3 Text Processing as well as Level 2, but she made everyone do the Level 2 to figure out what everyone needed help on. I don't think she'd quite planned what to do after someone did the test to the sort of standard I was working at (and holding the certificate to prove it).

I didn't mean to be the awkward student, but somehow I usually manage it...

Thank you, Steven. Studying feels good to me, so being allowed to study more stuff is fantastic :)

Next test: find a suitable medical dictionary before Monday (I need it a term earlier than my classmates, which of course gives me a term less to acquire the thing!)

She probably didnt want to exlude you from the group...

It was probably helpfull to get a genuine idea of your abilities in practise aswell, tedious for you, but it will probably help in the long run...

I don't understand their thinking... if you are qualified to a superior level and have the documents to prove it, why take it again?

I can see why she did the test (especially since it turned out the other one with the documents to "prove" qualification wasn't performing to the standard assumed by those documents). Before effective differentiation is possible, some sort of filter is necessary.

I can't see why she hadn't planned for the possibility of success...

Glad you guys enjoyed the Legard interview on f1badger - I can confirm he is a thoroughly nice bloke and well he does have one of the trickiest jobs in the world (ok, pretty glamorous too) so he's bound to and expecting criticism. Here at the Sett, we're all used to him and enjoying his style - it's evidently getting better all the time too...
