Monday is upon us again, and we have only the briefest amount of time to recover from Singapore before turning our attention to Japan. However, it is still all about the night race, and here's what we've been talking about:

  • F1 Wolf has been enjoying himself at the racetrack, and uploaded some pictures to his blog of Saturday. I do find it interesting that Wolf says he struggled to get pictures of the darker cars, such as Red Bulls and Toro Rossos.
  • The replay of the live Debrief is up and available if you feel like watching the entire unedited process. Mr C was on top form, banning pretty much everyone from F1 and taking all their superlicences away. Meanwhile, I was struggling to form sentences. You'd think by now we might be good at this podcasting lark!
  • Button is closing in on the championship, and in just seven days time we could be looking at a new World Champion. Do you think this is going to happen, or will it go down to the wire like the last couple of seasons?

That'll do it for now. Let us know what you're doing on this fine Monday, and how it's going. I will see you in the comments.

I messed up on FR. I sold Glock on Friday, 5 minutes before the cutoff. Oops.

There is a cbbc f1 feature with shov talking about Jenson's race clothing which just ran on the red button.

I only caught the bizarrly funny ending, i think lou would enjoy it though

    I'm here but pretty shattered....

  • Bert28/09/2009 at 00:20

And I just got through watching the GP thrice (local French, local English (re-BBC), and local English (SpeedTV) and then the forum.... Now I am lining up for a 1.5 hour racing chat session (Wind Tunnel on Speed). Thank God my F1 weekends usually start at 8:00 am!

Oh, an since I have an extra 40 minutes, I can fit the BBC pre-race show in too, since I don't get it here in Canada. I just love F1 gossip!

Oops. Meanwhile, I went for Trulli over Glock. Silly me.

Good thing there's not much movement in the 2009 standings anymore. Am very happy with my 2010 performance though. :D

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 00:55

I'm going to head to bed. Another day off tomorrow to use up my holiday allocation which expires at the end of the month, back to work Tuesday..

won't be here much during the day though, stuff to sort out, and I'm sorta keeping a lower profile than usual after embarrassing myself Thurs night...

    Night.

Have to go, but before I do:

ING RF1 Team 2009 Singapore Grand Prix Sunday : Fernando Alonso claimed his first podium of the sea..

    That's odd - I thought ING wasn't their sponsor anymore? ;)

Must be an automated tweet... hehe. :D

All this is gonna take months to clear out....

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 02:21

    Random thought (I'm in training):

I feel like I'm in Singapore right now - our trainer is Singaporean (with matching Singlish accent). He's quite good too. :D

Well, it's one thing to change their Twitter account, but the tweet could've been changed pretty quickly, I'd think.

As if I wasn't jealous enough of Mr Wolf:

Brawn, Toyota crew on my flight, looks like they chose to go Japan via hong kong

Looking at some of the Toyota #F1 people, there obviously were some celebrations last night :-)

  • Amy28/09/2009 at 04:30

ooh i has 2 heikki posters, one of which was marked "unclaimed return to sender." gotta love australia post who had it at the northcote post office for 2 months when my local is the north melbourne post office and i live nowhere near northcote.

    Morning all,

Today is awesome because I listened to the News Quiz :D

Looking at some of the Toyota #F1 people, there obviously were some celebrations last night :-)

And they bloody deserved them! Shame they didn't win - it would have been enough to confirm their place in the sport next year...

Button is closing in on the championship, and in just seven days time we could be looking at a new World Champion. Do you think this is going to happen, or will it go down to the wire like the last couple of seasons?

No - he would have to finish fourth place (or higher if Rubens scores) and I think that will be difficult for him as there are too many other competitive cars.

He would be the winner on medals already though...

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 06:07

No – he would have to finish fourth place (or higher if Rubens scores) and I think that will be difficult for him as there are too many other competitive cars.

Correction - he needs to beat Rubens by 5 points. So even if Button wins, he needs Rubens to finish off the podium to clinch the title.

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 06:10

Journeyer, if I wanted to nomiate a charity for the Philippines on the wiki for the sidepodradiomoney, which ones would you reccomend?

Easiest one at this point would be TXTpower, a link to which I gave yesterday. Their donations will go to the Philippine National Red Cross.

But that's not a charity site - it's a site that you send money to and they donate to the red cross. I don't like the idea of that...

Blimey... Sorry about the pasta... I must have got your address wrong!

  • Amy28/09/2009 at 07:23

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 07:29

Dude! It takes 5 days to post stuff to Australia you know!

The least detail I've ever been able to get on an address was a postcard I sent to my cousin Stew (from Sofaf1). I was able to get away with just "Stew" and his postcode.

He was living in a building that was the only building in the postcode and he was the only Stewart so I figured it should work... And it did!

Brawn Toyota crew were on the same flight as me, as was Nico Rosberg. Looks like Nico and his girlfriend are spending 2 days in hong kong.

It was funny when a guy asked him for autograph next to the luggage conveyor belt and mr rosberg started to pretend he is not himself :-)

  • F1Wolf28/09/2009 at 07:43

    What are you referring to?

That said, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 08:00

    What are you referring to?

Well apparently "President Arroyo used up the government’s P800-million contingency fund for emergencies like calamities for her frequent foreign trips, Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona III revealed yesterday."

  • F1Wolf28/09/2009 at 08:02

Well apparently “President Arroyo used up the government’s P800-million contingency fund for emergencies like calamities for her frequent foreign trips, Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona III revealed yesterday.”

    Oh, THAT!

She did that around the time Cory Aquino died.

She had 2 lavish dinners in NY and DC. Many felt they were inappropriate, more so after Cory died.

This had already died down, but it looks like it might be revived again.

FYI, PHP800M is roughly equal to GBP10M.

    Yup, I got it. ;)

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 08:11

Gavin... I know you were looking for a donation place earlier presumably the Philippine Red Cross would be the easiest place: http://www.redcross.org.ph/

But while I will donate personally there now I don't think we can suggest that for the Radio Money. It was mentioned that it would be a motorsport charity the whole way through.

I understand your point of view, but it just seems a bit weird to donate to a motorsports fund when there is a country in need of relief from a disaster.

However, it was just a suggestion and if it was inappropriate then I apologise.

It's not inappropriate at all, very thoughtful, in fact.

Of course that is just the iPhone 3G and not the new 3Gs (with compass, video etc) There were rumours T-Mobile were going to offer it too although with the Orange link-up this may happen later on.

    No it's the 3GS https://interest.orange.co.uk/default.aspx

I stand corrected! (Terrible first post from me - incorrect info!)

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 09:50

So I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts on the train, and I've learned how to listen to them so I stifle any laughs that come along so I don't look too crazy.

While the Sidepodcast live show is fun I don't normally have to worry about that too much. Until this morning. While on the train this morning I got to the bit with the chant FAIL and I burst out laughing properly loudly on the train. Several people turned around which made the whole thing even worse. I was unable to stop laughing and the whole situation was so ridiculous by the time Mr C did it properly I was actually crying with laughter...

Thanks Sidepodcast. You made my morning :)

Itr was very cool, for some reason i pictured the melbourne trams to be more like the San Francisco cablecars, obviously they arent!

It seemed to be quite quiet on their though!

there are some old trams kind of more like the san francisco ones but they only do the circular tourist route around the CBD. There is also these which is kind of tacky but I really want to go on it one day.

Brawn Toyota crew were on the same flight as me, as was Nico Rosberg. Looks like Nico and his girlfriend are spending 2 days in hong kong.

    It was funny when a guy asked him for autograph next to the luggage conveyor belt and mr rosberg started to pretend he is not himself :-) {Comment #56}

Sounds like a great way to end your race weekend :) .

I can understand why Nico was not perhaps in the mood to sign autographs at that time, but is pretending to be someone else going a little far? By the way, did the tactic work?

Edit - I saw the "he signed and laughed" comment and my opinion of Nico has gone up quite a bit :)

  • Alianora La Canta28/09/2009 at 10:40

    Well apparently “President Arroyo used up the government’s P800-million contingency fund for emergencies like calamities for her frequent foreign trips, Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona III revealed yesterday.” {Comment #78}

Eek! Didn't she realise what the point of a contingency fund was?

Maybe they should be like the ones in Blackpoolhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackpool_tramway

Its very interesting, i still firmly belive that bernie was playing politics for max when he suggested they wont be there next year.

the real doubt for me is campos. we haven't heard anything, its almost as if noone bothered to tell them they were in f1 next year.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 11:19

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 11:26

What about Notus? Sauber are in a better position surely?

Them too, although they must have something ready to go, I dont think the FIA would have approved them or Mike would be involved unless they were sure they could do it.

USF1 are making all the right noises, So are Manor with their Virgin Deal, Notus have just been approved so the only one left is the mysterious campos...

Bernie didnt seem at all concerned with getting extra grid slots for next year. It could be part of his negotiation tactics though... Sauber are a FOTA member...

Jake: "How do we get there Jonathon"

Legard: "Well it's this road, from this road, from this road, from this other road."

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 12:25

    LOOK AT THAT

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 12:29

    LOOK AT THAT

The problem with "LOOK AT THAT" is that I would let Murray get away with "WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT".

However this was because he was just about to say what it was whereas Legard says it and then doesn't bother to say it.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 12:30

I suppose it's just filler though. People need a bit of time to think about what they're looking at before they describe it. You can't just say nothing can you :P

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 12:30

However this was because he was just about to say what it was whereas Legard says it and then doesn't bother to say it.

Alan Henry from the Guardian thinks Alonso has signed a £19 million deal for three years at Ferrari.

Not much new here though - and full of conjecture. FTA:

Neither Ferrari nor McLaren would officially comment on the matter, but a close friend of Alonso said he had little doubt that the Ferrari deal was already done. "Fernando isn't always the most demonstrative of guys, but when he was walking down the paddock he almost looked as though he wanted to leap into the air and click his heels together," he said. "He looked like a guy who'd pulled off the deal of his life."

They have done movies before but they are usually rubbish.

The only other relatively famous one I have seen is that What Women Want thing with that guy.

It may be - because when you changed the title it added another feed on the iPod.

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 13:42

It doesnt seem to stop Microsoft or sony updating their console firmware.

It sounds like an excuse they have found to make more money, and drive people to the iphone

I believe there is some truth in this... But from a vague rememberence of the argument it is because firmware is considered part of the hardware. Software installed external to the firmware is considered software. And this is why they charge for iPod Touch updates but not iPod. The software that is the OS is clearly software becuase it's running on two different devices.

    Or something.

Can i also add that i am disapointed gogle dont have an itunes competitor, maybe they are saving it for their OS.

Android really seems to have taken off in the last 6 weeks so maybe that will encourage them?

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 14:18

    zune.

They call their updates Firmware updates. I'm not saying I can see any difference between the two. But I seem to remember that this was the loophole that Microsoft was exploiting to not have to charge. But why Apple don't do the same is as you point out presumably just to make money.

They claim they don't charge for iphone major rev updates because there's a monthly contract. And that makes their SOX accounting all happy.

  • Alex Andronov28/09/2009 at 15:15

Okay so I have the answer to the Zune question... Microsoft want to change the law just as much as Apple do.

Basically when you buy an iPhone or a Zune or an Apple TV Apple or Microsoft take what you paid for the product and divide the price of it into 8 and put those numbers through their accounts for the next 8 quarters.

Apple didn't want to do that with the iPod Touch they wanted to be able to report a massive increase in revenue in Quarter 1 when they sold the iPod Touch (they couldn't do the same with the iPhone because that was definitely a subscriber service).

However once they had gone that way they could either change their accounting of the iPod Touch which would result in a sudden drop in revenue or they could charge for the upgrade. Guess which way they went.

Microsoft went the same way as the Apple TV.

The rule is about to be changed due to heavy lobbying from Apple and Microsoft (agreeing about something). They got tentative approval last week: http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/09/14/accounting-rule-change-in-apples-favor/

    riiiiiight. bloody apple.

You can sort of see their reasoning. They knew the iPod Touch would reduce sales of regular iPods which report instantly, and would switch the revenue into this subscriber model. So for 3 quarters, right after they launched a new awesome product line their revenues would look like they had gone down rather than up. I guess that's why they didn't do it.

JA has listed the endorsements Todt has received. Not surprised about Bernie, Schumi, and Prost, but Mario Andretti and Roger Penske? So disappointing.

Some of the biggest names from the motorsport scene around the world came out for Todt this weekend, men like Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost and Mario Andretti. None of them has a vote on the FIA presidency, but their voices resonate widely.

One of them, legendary Amercian team owner Roger Penske said,

“One of Jean’s great abilities has been his level of commitment to encouraging the very best performance from his team. He was 1000% committed to team Peugeot, 1000% committed to team Ferrari and in the future will be 1000% committed to team FIA. For Jean nothing less than this commitment is enough and if he only achieves a fraction of the success at the FIA as he has done in motor sport competition, we can expect great things from the governing body in the future.”

Andretti and Penske? IndyCar isn't even an FIA championship, right?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 15:32

But it has the magic three letters at the bottom that translate to "90% chance of it being untrue".

I think that its slightly less than that.

Deuche press are running the story with quotes from a team spokesman http://www.mon...act-option-with-Glock

TG on meeting toyota people next week: 'We'll see what they say and whether perhaps there is something that can be done,' he said. 'At least the success in Singapore came at the right time.'

I think what may have happened is that because they are still unsure if Toyota will be in F1 in 2010, the drivers have been allowed to shop around...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 15:33

    Love that song...

It is, indeed, a great song. Really liked it in the opening sequence of Gran Turismo 4.

Oddly enough the Euro version had Kasabian and the Japanese Version some weird opera music. Was Pants compared to PANAMAAAA!!!!

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 15:34

I think what may have happened is that because they are still unsure if Toyota will be in F1 in 2010, the drivers have been allowed to shop around...

That's nice of Toyota, but not sure if that's the right thing to do. If Glock finds a better seat (say, McLaren), then Toyota will have just lost its best long-term bet.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 15:35

That's nice of Toyota, but not sure if that's the right thing to do. If Glock finds a better seat (say, McLaren), then Toyota will have just lost its best long-term bet.

Why would McLaren want Glock? I'd say Heikki's a better bet than him....

  • RG28/09/2009 at 15:36

Why would McLaren want Glock? I'd say Heikki's a better bet than him....

    ahem.

Glock really hasn't had the ability to shine in that Toyota. Honestly, we haven't seen the true pace of him.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 15:36

Glock is an outside bet, at best (esp. when Kimi's available), but he has managed to drag that Toyota to podiums it shouldn't have gotten. And he's German - bonus for Mercedes.

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 15:37

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 15:38

I'm not sure Singapore is particularly representative of either of them tbh. I'm just not sure he's a top flight driver.

Trulli's done okay this year as well when Glock's blown it at times.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 15:38

true. in a race winning car, what might glock have done?

  • jpancoast28/09/2009 at 15:39

Ok, since we're back to F1, I have a crazy question. Yesterday Button went from 12th to 5th.

Did he actually pass anyone on track? Or was it all retirements ahead of him and pit stops? I don't seem to remember seeing anyone pass anybody yesterday, but I mighta missed it :)

  • RG28/09/2009 at 15:39

For all his silliness, he did allow himself the slightest breathing room.

true. in a race winning car, what might glock have done?

You just don't know though.... Good car for one person doesn't mean it's gonna suit someone else. There are a lot of different circumstances come together to make any good or bad result, not all to do with the driver.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 15:41

but glock might now ask for a higher salary...

He could well do, but has he got any better options if they say no? Given the size of the grid next year toyota will definaly be one of the better teams to be at, even if they are not at the top, as i see it

    Ferrari: No

    RedBull:No

    Mclaren: Highly unlikely

Brawn: likely to go with Rosberg

Toyota may not be the worst bet of the teams under that, especialy given he has got working relationships with the people there now.

  • jpancoast28/09/2009 at 15:41

This is F1 - overtaking stops after the first lap :D

    hahaha... I am a crazy optimist :)

Ok, since we're back to F1, I have a crazy question. Yesterday Button went from 12th to 5th.

HEI demoted before the start, passed NAK at the start, moved up 2 spots at the first stops, WEB retired, jumped KOV and BAR at the 2nd stops.

    I guess not then.

  • RG28/09/2009 at 15:43

Hasn't Glock beaten Trulli for the most part this year?

9/10 times I reckon. Only times Trulli has beaten him Glock has been close behind, and he hasn't retired all season.

  • Journeyer28/09/2009 at 15:43

Toyota may not be the worst bet of the teams under that, especialy given he has got working relationships with the people there now.

Williams is a possibility - depending on how well you think they'll fare in 2010.

Yes, but their strategy has been questionable at times. 2009 standings show Toyota comfortably ahead.

Vettel has made a season out of overtaking people in the pitlane too...

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 15:46

The Williams has been a better car than the Toyota hasn't it?

It has been more consistent, but toyota have hit the podium at several races. If he doesn't have to move on next year i think he would be better at toyota, he doesn't want to be humming round in a cosworth!

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 15:46

Hasn't Glock beaten Trulli for the most part this year?

We do have a table of this nature:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=prOWs9OlsmMxrFIJcecKFRg&hl=en

It has been ruined by the number of driver changes, but the Toyota pairing is compared fairly.

I remember mentioning Williams-Renault on a Sidepodpanel sometime in the 1st series. :D

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 15:49

    whats happened?

There was a fascinating little cameo on the grid on Sunday, picked up by the world feed cameras, where Todt was proceeding down the grid, like a president, with people around him, including Ecclestone when Ari Vatanen pushed Bernie from behind as he jostled to be in on the group. You heard Bernie snap at him, “Hey, don’t push” and Vatanen looked such an outsider in that group.

It's from james' blog. That makes me sad. The closer we get to the presidency vote, the more less likely Ari looks to succeed.

  • Rich28/09/2009 at 15:49

  • Rich28/09/2009 at 15:57

Hasn't Glock beaten Trulli for the most part this year?

Trulli is a better qualifier, in the race Glock is generally faster and makes more overtakes and even has the fastest lap (Valencia). The same pattern exists with Heidfeld and Kubica. I cannot remember too many mistakes that Timo has made this year.

I find it difficult to see how many anyone can think Kovy is better than Timo - one generally gains places during a race and the other always loses places.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 15:57

No, but I think that you can't hold up gaining a lot of places in the race as an answer to underperforming in quali! Of course you gain places if you're bad at qualifying. Your car is far faster than those around you....

  • Rich28/09/2009 at 16:03

I would argue that if Glock was in that car for Krashyjima then that would not have been the case... And you know I ain't a fan of Goldilocks!

I would say the Toyota was better at the beginning of the season but it has been a dog at some races (Monaco) and Williams is now probably better at most circuits other than the high speed ones like Monza.

Nico makes a bit too many mistakes overall and does not push as hard as Timo. I think Timo is slightly the better driver if driving the same car. Timo is very good at managing his tyres with some incredible stints - that is way he should be good next year.

I don't understand who you're comparing him to. He had a mare in Monza but what's wrong with what he did in Singapore? He should have qualified higher up the field, then he'd have been fine I think.

There is such a pattern throughout the year. He is driving what is now probably the best car (or second best car) since it is fast on a variety circuits. It also has KERS which help defend positions. I like Kovy as guy very much and I really would like to see him do well but at Macca he dissapoints.

That is a great film. I so heart that one!

Also is there anyone else wthat watches normal films/programmes on DVD with subtitles on anyways or am I just wierd?

I do with my wife because she likes to have the words underneath to fall back on...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 16:35

Also is there anyone else wthat watches normal films/programmes on DVD with subtitles on anyways or am I just wierd?

No, I have done that, especially with difficult dialogue but I make myself turn them off. I miss too much onscreen

I did it for Scarface - couldn't understand one Pacino word!

  • MoJoker28/09/2009 at 16:35

Also is there anyone else wthat watches normal films/programmes on DVD with subtitles on anyways or am I just wierd?

I do that for everything which winds my Dad up no end. Hate it when watching F1 which is when it can be useful when they are talking outside the garages, and the subtitles are out of sync!

Also did anyone see Bernie shove Ari when he turned to shake hands with Jean Todt?

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 16:36

I just like having subtitles on. No real reason why... first thing I do when I watch a DVD is look for subtitles

I heart subtitles because I read better than I listen.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 16:36

It was going on at the same time as the race...

... Isn't that not just pointless but completely counter productive?

probably. but today f1 made radio 1's newsbeat.

in the end, that's what bernie wanted.

Chaitr person sits in a chair and tells everyone things...

Secretary tells the chair person what to say and does all the running of things after the chair person has instructed them them what to do as per the secretary's instructions

Guys - great article from Peter Windsor about the USF1 team so far!

He has a lot of great ideas - let's just hope that they work...

I like it. It is a completely different approach and I think it'll work. Perhaps not in terms of championships or even wins, like the other new teams they'll be off pace for a while, but of the three new teams I really do believe they will be the first to 'catch up' to the main field.

  • Bassano Clapper28/09/2009 at 16:48

I didn't quite understand why in that article it says LG encountered problems recording within the tunnel at Monaco? Something to do with the hard drives been effected by the vibrations?

Why would the cameras have hard drives? Wouldn't the feed/images/data be stored elsewhere?

A Soyuz arrived at the ISS on Friday. I didn't know anything about it. It is just a standard crew shuffle mission. 3 new astronauts arrive and in a few days 3 of the current occupants will leave.

The only interesting point is that this flight included European astronaut Frank de Winne. That in itself is not unusual but at the next crew shuffle mission he will become the first European commander of the ISS.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 17:13

Why would the cameras have hard drives? Wouldn't the feed/images/data be stored elsewhere?

If it was there own video i guess they would.

The frequencies around f1 tracks are strictly controlled and expensive, so i guess for a 1 off it was the best option...

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 17:13

why is there so much 3g coverage out at sea?

I normally sleep 12 hours or more in the weekend and end up wasting it so I'm trying to sleep more during the week. I should build up to it though, rather than more than double my usual amount, but I was pretty tired at 10. Fell asleep right away and everything.

I see in their Japan preview Norbert also says "“From a teams and drivers’ perspective, the Japanese Grand Prix is one of the biggest challenges of all 17 races this year. The track layout offers everything from the ultra-fast 130R corner to a slow hairpin. With Kimi Räikkönen we won there in 2005" and Martin says " we’ve won at Suzuka on six occasions, and I vividly remember the 2005 race, when Kimi [Raikkonen] took the lead on the final lap of one of the most spectacular grands prix I have ever witnessed. "

they seem to mention Kimi more than their own drivers these days.

Looks like Todt has upse t the South Africans and as a result they are trying to get the whole of Africa to vote against him.

I also just realised one mention in that release says Räikkönen and the other says Raikkonen. Where is your consistency, McLaren!

Something for Gavin, Scott and others waiting for Gran Turismo 5... the damage stuff they've been promising so much is, well... rubbish. I thought they'd improve on what they showed a month or two agao but yikes. Here's a video.

That sort of damage was on the TOCA Touring Car series...

No way will this game be anywhere near finished when it's released!

Maybe some GT5 SPC races, if that will be possible?

I'm guessing it'll be possible, GT 5 prologue has an online component that I've never used.

If it can be done, I will join. And I will lose :)

Hehe thats why I place F1 06/Championship Edition, I can have the racing line there at all times ;)

I still play that. Was playing that this weekend. Not online though, too jerky, and not everyone else has a sense of fair play. They'd rather shove you off, than overtake you properly.

Hehe yep and then you get penalised because you're car is damaged. Although I have been known to ram people just because they've nudged me off the racing line.

  • James28/09/2009 at 18:03

Do you know I am really good at that until a certain someone starts talking...

    :D

Certain tracks I just can't race at, I don't know why but others I'm fine with. I'm never the fastest (online some people have recorded really low lap time for some circuits) but I'll keep my lap times around the same and just pick up places when people are stupid and colide with someone.

  • Steven Roy28/09/2009 at 18:03

There's a local indoor karting league that I'm going to try out first, though.

If you are thinking of doing karting you should stay away from the gearbox classes until you have had plenty of practise in a non-gearbox class.

  • me28/09/2009 at 18:40

Have you ever been to a festival?

course. but the best bit is at the end... in the dark.

welcome to "f1 rocks", the pop concert for f1's only night race. you can catch all your favourite artists around lunchtime.

    woop!

It's kinda like saying "Hey, I know what will go well with an F1 race - a concert!" and then saying "Let's have it at the same time, no-one will notice, the race will be boring anyway!"

I would hold the concert on Saturday night. Qualifying was at a really odd time. 3pm UK? eh? move it to 12 or 1pm, whatever that works out as.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 18:42

What's the point of it if you can't watch the race though? If the timing is such a problem, don't bother with it. Must have cost a fortune.

as i've never heard of the nerds, that'll have to be it m'fraid.

    wooooww,

bernie might be good on to something there

  • me28/09/2009 at 18:46

I thought it was for friends, etc, for instance: "I'll go to the race, you can watch Beyonce."

    YES!

  • me28/09/2009 at 18:46

Did it? Or did 'F1 Rocks'? Because if what your saying is true, they aren't the same at all...

    "f1 rocks" made newsbeat.

you all have the wrong end of the stick. i shall have to blog it. you've forced me into it.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 18:46

Meh, I think putting them over each other just stereotypes F1 fans. Why assume they wouldn't like the concert?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 18:46

as i said earlier. f1 made newsbeat today.

The only F1 news I have seen lately is a lot of crap about Briatore and Renault - it's never on Fi... and they had three questions, then half of Sportsweek was about Flabbio - I almost fell off my chair!

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 18:47

    YES!

Why aren't you asking, "who'd want to go to a race/concert by themselves?" That's my first thought!

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 18:47

you all have the wrong end of the stick. i shall have to blog it. you've forced me into it.

I thought the whole point of it was for people to watch the race, and then go to a concert, thus attracting more people who would watch both.

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 18:50

    "f1 rocks" made newsbeat.

I dont see how that helps bernie though... People arent going to go "oh those f1 people had a concert, i must watch that sport whenever its on" ?

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 18:51

I thought it was for friends, etc, for instance: "I'll go to the race, you can watch Beyonce."

Isn't that actually really patronising though?

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 18:51

Isn't that actually really patronising though?

Is it? I have no idea. I don't go to concerts.

  • me28/09/2009 at 18:52

Isn't that actually really patronising though?

Is it? I have no idea. I don't go to concerts.

no. it's a very good idea.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 18:52

Is it? I have no idea. I don't go to concerts.

I think it kinda implies you couldn't like both the backstreet boys and F1....

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 18:53

All the stuff of front street boys and that woman from destinys lad and the nerds sweeties at singapore has forced me to get a clip of a proper band in relation to Singapore

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 18:55

Really? I don't see it, but fair enough.

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 18:55

I think it kinda implies you couldn't like both the backstreet boys and F1....

Exactly. If I liked both things I'd be pretty frustrated, if I liked just the band I'd feel a bit patronised that it had been laid on just to give me something to do while my mate watched some racing. And if I'm the mate watching the racing I'd be annoyed that I couldn't introduce the racing to other guy.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 18:56

Really? I don't see it, but fair enough.

Obviously the point of it isn't to increase ticket sales, which I think it should be. Bernie's gone for publicity.

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 19:01

Obviously the point of it isn't to increase ticket sales, which I think it should be. Bernie's gone for publicity.

I guess. I see it as if I'm one race fan, I'm less likely to go to the GP, but if I can find a music fan then I might be able to drag them along and make a weekend of it. That is an extra ticket sold.

I am all for the idea of a Grand Prix offering more than just cars, but I can understand why people might think it is dumbing down.

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 19:02

I am all for the idea of a Grand Prix offering more than just cars, but I can understand why people might think it is dumbing down.

I think its a good idea if you sell it all as 1 ticket, but to have them both on effecitivly in competition is completely counter productive

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 19:09

Ohhhhhhhhh yes. The Dr Who episode Blink is on the iPlayer :D

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 19:09

Don't you think you should be able to see these other things if you like the race though?

It doesn't seem sensible that the two things are scheduled at the same time, but then you're right back at the argument about watching music at certain times a day, and unfortunately I have no knowledge of this.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 19:11

The obvious answer is to put Beyonce in an F1 car:

    "I'm a single stopper, I'm a single stopper"

And Will.i.am can be Lewis's Wheelman:

    "Where is the tyre?"

It's been there for years and years and obviously it's a bit tatty, and I have no idea why it's even there as it's just randomly on one of our main streets in the city but I see it nearly every day! :D

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 19:39

For some reason I could never get into Doctor Who - and I love Sci-Fi???

I know a lot of people who say the same thing. I think it's because most sci fi's take themselves particularly seriously as do the fans but Doctor Who isn't massively sci fi when you compare it with some of the bigger shows of the genre, plus a lot of people take Dr Who too seriously when it's really just light hearted yet brilliantly told drama.

Torchwood is a tough one to explain though. the 5 parter they did was absolutely superb but the rest of the show is all over the place, I honestly think it's Russel T Davies (head writer) just trying too hard to be an 'adult' equivalent of a show that offers itself to all ages.

5 have their own online tv thingy that's paying or free depending on what it is you want to watch. Have you ever used it?

nope. i don't even like iplayer though, so i may not be the best person to try it. i bought shooting stars on itunes last week, because iplayer annoyed me so much.

    iPlayer is allright?

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 20:08

I really dislike that you can't subscribe to things. You need to still pay attention to the tv schedule. It's a right pain.

  • RG28/09/2009 at 20:09

Jenson is awesome, he will continue to be awesome, he has an awesome beard and an awesome team and an awesome teammate

And his fans are also awesome?

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 20:09

Me too. they're stranded on a jungle island and there's no dinosaurs???

No idea mate. one minute they're running away from stuff, then they're not there, then they're in a science lab, then there's a polar beard, oh my gosh my shoelaces have less tangles than my brain just thinking about it

  • me28/09/2009 at 20:09

    iPlayer is allright?

deletes stuff after 7 days. i didn't have time to watch in 7 days and missed a show.

What's so annoying about iPlayer? We have nothing like that in Denmark and our internets are much faster than yours...

are you sure that itouch doesnt give off gamma rays which force you to give apple money?

How is it any different to watching the race on bbc sportplayer?

  • me28/09/2009 at 20:11

I don't watch the tv. At all. I tried to resort to the tv when my internet was being silly during quali and i couldn't even turn it on.....

I watch programmes on demand. Therefore, why should I have to pay attention to when they're shown on the tv, why can't they load onto my computer or come up on a homepage when they're ready for me. Why do I still need to trawl listings?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 20:12

That's fair enough. What happens when you download stuff off iPlayer? How long do you have to watch it?

  • Jon Waldock28/09/2009 at 20:13

deletes stuff after 7 days. i didn't have time to watch in 7 days and missed a show.

then you should have downloaded it whilst it was up, and then you have 30 days to enjoy it

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 20:13

How is it any different to watching the race on bbc sportplayer?

    The architecture is identical...

  • me28/09/2009 at 20:13

How is it any different to watching the race on bbc sportplayer?

because that a live event. so i have to be sitting there when it's on.

i have no idea what day shooting stars airs. and i don't care to know. i just want it to be there when i want to watch it.

episode one was. episode two wasn't. so i bought the whole series. i can now take ten years to watch it if i want.

  • Lukeh28/09/2009 at 20:13

deletes stuff after 7 days. i didn't have time to watch in 7 days and missed a show.

I barely watch any TV so it's nice to go on for me sometimes and find surprises like Dr Who on there such as tonight. I can understand your annoyances in situations like you explain but I enjoy the service it provides for my own personal usage.

But why doesn't it let you make an account and register what programmes you like? That'd improve usability no end.

i get your point, and i agree with you that downloading when you want is alot easier, but the iplayers free, you buy a paper at the beginning of the week, 70p? max, you see whats on, a day after its been on you download it and have 30 days to watch it.

    its free

  • me28/09/2009 at 20:16

, you buy a paper at the beginning of the week,

But it'd be amazing if I could go on, tell them what I want and find it on my computer for my viewing pleasure like itunes does with tv series'. I don't get why that can't happen. You have to check really regularly to avoid missing things otherwise.

  • Jon Waldock28/09/2009 at 20:18

each channel has a tv guide on it, and i think itv's lists channel 4, channel 5 and bbc channels too. so its really quite easy

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 20:21

I find it to be a total pest. But yes, I do use it. They could do a lot to make it more usable though. I don't see why they don't. I can't see it being that difficult.

  • Pat W28/09/2009 at 20:22

I have BT Vision. That has a menu system where you can sort by series, channel, genre or A-Z. It isn't great but it works and is higher quality than watching on a computer monitor. Unfortunately I have to keep a spreadsheet to remind myself what episodes I've seen. And you have to check the 'What's New' bit every week.

It isnt though, as soon as the most profitable option is found the other will disappear.

When i was young we used to have films on our normall tv channel most nights.

Then they launched a dedicated movie channel you had to pay for, the advantage was their were no ads.

Their didnt used to be that many ads during films anyway, maybe 2 or 3 ad breaks. but before long they started having them every 20 mins. and these were pointless ad breaks for nothing other than other shows on the channel.

Soon enough everyone stopped watching the films on that channel and they were dropped, the only way to watch films was to subscibe to the expensive film channel...

This is just ridiculous. I feel like I can't do anything but start fights on here at the moment. But I watch many a film and I've never had sky or anything other than the basic tv service. Before my tv went into retirement, I could have watched a film most nights

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 20:38

i hope no-one's starting fights. i'm certainly not trying too.

i say people should choose what they like. christine and i disagree on the way we consume media, but we both agree we pick what's right for us.

i like to tell people how i watch tv, because i know i'm so wildly different that it might open minds to some future possibilities. christine and i have ditched 70 years worth of television consumption assumptions and thrown everything on its head.

that's bound to annoy/confuse people, but i still think it's worthly of debate.

What you are doing is something I saw predicted a couple years ago. Effectively the line was that historically people made their own entertainment and everyone had a different experience. Since television we have had a system where a small number of companies control entertainment centrally and decide how and when it is seen.

What will happen next is we get back to the older natural model where people do what they want when they want with no central control. You also go from a few to many system to one which many people (like sidepodcast) produce the entertainment rather than only a few people being able to do it.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/09/2009 at 20:44

If they dumb down the sport they have to put on racing rather than high technology showcases. Bring on the dumning down

i do agree with that. the only downside to that argument, is flav dumbed-down f1 a lot. and then they got shot of him.

to answer alison's question that will very soon be moved to the daily. i'm rubbish at blogging and don't have a blog.

    You need one then! :D

But it would need a name...

  • Christine28/09/2009 at 21:12

:( Mrs C has many. I'd suggest that you're not the person to ask about locating those though :P

There are some links here: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Christine

I must write a regulars page!

I need to re-do mine because it is way out of date.

grr. to answer the thread question. christine and i both spotted that we'd veered off topic at the same time, so there must be a line. however, no-one needs think about that, we'll deal with it.

if you really are interested, the rule of thumb before commenting on a non-daily thread should be:

"would a lurker or newbie understand this comment?"

so, if it's in-jokey, or references the dictionary or #mfc or anything not really f1 related, then that's for the daily. the goal is to avoid frightening off people who don't spend all day in the doohickey.

the daily is actually impregnable for anyone who happened to stumble across it. try reading back an old daily thread most of it is nonsensical. non-daily threads should ideally encourage conversation, not lock people out of it.

anyhow. we will fix it, so don't let it discourage you from commenting.

How do I mark things read in google reader? Does it just assume I've read it all because I had it open?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/09/2009 at 21:24

How do I mark things read in google reader? Does it just assume I've read it all because I had it open?

Yes - and you can click a box at the bottom to keep it unread if you choose..

    Does this link help? http://www.andywibbels.com/flash/google_reader.htm

  • Nick28/09/2009 at 21:25

How do I mark things read in google reader? Does it just assume I've read it all because I had it open?

generaly yes, although you can mark them as unread if you want to read them again or whatnot

if there is a lot of stuff you dont want to read you can mark all as unread

The university's Young Entrepreneur's society has emailed me...

Apparently they've started a twitter-pitching service, where you have to pitch your business idea in 140 characters!!

  • Alison28/09/2009 at 21:31

I think I've just about got the hang of that. Thankyou everyone for helping me (particularly Gavin!) :)

Evening all. Feeling a little like Marl Webber when he won. I finally managed to fix my problems with Firefox crashing when I look at various sites including the sidepodwiki. Turns out there's a fault with Firefox 3.5.3. I've installed the beta 3.6 (called Namoroka for some reason) and it's working!

  • RG28/09/2009 at 21:53

Before I start to get carried away with the wiki, I'll go to bed. So in that case, g'night. Lotsa love.

Have you looked at doing the same thing for other towns? If it works in one it will work in others.

  • lou28/09/2009 at 21:58

jenson must've had one for more than a year, right?

Jenson started using it last year i think.. could have been early this year. He got the idea from DC, who first used it a few years ago... Rubens has tried it this year and loves it... nico must have noticed and wanted to try it too.

i think Jenson had an after race one too this weekend... not sure though..

    i really am not here.

Uploading it now, tis a video. I just wanted to try out different songs with the BBC F1 intro but that of course means replacing The Chain... *hides*

I love The Chain though, I'm not trying to replace it. I just wanted to try something else to the intro. Anyways, I reckon it's come out alright even with my rubbish music editing skills. My internet is slow tonight so gimme a sec...

Just don't hurt me is all... :)

I try not to do both at the same time... Virgin Media are horribly iffy with bandwidth. I probably could but I don't trust them, they will throttle you over even the sillest things I've found in the past.

Its interesting... some parts work and others dont.

I get the feeling that the video was made especially for the chain. Im not a big fan of the CGI stuff when there is so much real footage they could have used to be honest...

    how do i know when it’s up? Comment #844}

iPlayer has RSS feeds for various types of content. The function is admittedly well-hidden, but has a wide variety of options. If you know what category a programme will be in and/or what station it is on, you can click on the "All Feeds" tab and select what you want iPlayer to inform you about.

Then just put your feet up and wait to be told when programmes you like are uploaded. No more 70p TV listings magazines needed.
