The last day of June has rolled around (already!?) and it is Ralf Schumacher's birthday today. Yes, him, the other Schumacher. I wonder what he will be doing to celebrate his 34th birthday. Anyway, here are some of the things we've been talking about:

  • Mario Theissen has become the next team boss to admit that the overtaking rules need some work. We can all see it, obviously, but it means a little bit more coming from the people who help to shape the rules in the first place. He does add that the fact the field has closed up so much is unexpected and has made things a lot more excited. Qualifying, yes, Mario. The race, not so much.
  • Following on from Heikki's triumphant attempt at the Ask the Expert quiz on F1.com, Adrian Sutil steps up to have a go. He's not so hot on getting the correct answers, as Heikki managed to top the field of drivers asked so far, whilst Sutil falls way down the bottom of the order. Sounds familiar, no?
  • I was thinking, you know those games where you take the best parts of various people to make an über-person? Who would make up your ideal driver? We're talking qualifying skill, overtaking ability, temperament, helmet colours, anything that makes up a driver. What do you reckon? I'm giving it some thought, let me know what you come up with.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. Feel free to discuss how quickly June has gone for you, I know it has absolutely flown for me. As ever, I will see you in the comments.

    Tremayne?

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 23:51

can anybody shed any light on what these pages are meant to do?

It's to make sure you know there has not been a printing error and that there is no useful information on the page.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 23:51

    Tremayne?

If you'd asked me a week or two ago..

  • me29/06/2009 at 23:52

It's to make sure you know there has not been a printing error and that there is no useful information on the page.

that sounds reasonable. except, why have ythe page there at all?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:52

can anybody shed any light on what these pages are meant to do?

They are so printing errors can be identified, usualy in exams

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:54

that sounds reasonable. except, why have ythe page there at all?

if you only have 3 pages of content, you still have 4 sides

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:55

if you only have 3 pages of content, you still have 4 sides

    If that makes any sense!

  • me29/06/2009 at 23:55

    how?

  • me29/06/2009 at 23:56

if you only have 3 pages of content, you still have 4 sides

that is interesting... but why not make it the last page, instead of the second?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:56

    how?

They normaly say at the start o an exam please ensure the booklet has writting on every page.

apart from the bold text there is usually also a code in tiny footer writting

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:57

that is interesting... but why not make it the last page, instead of the second?

I have seen it both ways... sometimes they have source material to use that they want to position next to the question

  • me29/06/2009 at 23:58

They normaly say at the start o an exam please ensure the booklet has writting on every page.

but why? i can't see why the last page of an exam can't be blank, if the preceding page says "the end".

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:58

I have seen it both ways... sometimes they have source material to use that they want to position next to the question

I mean on the opposite page...

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 23:58

that is interesting... but why not make it the last page, instead of the second?

Layout? So you can't read the writing on the back of page 1 through the paper?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:58

but why? i can't see why the last page of an exam can't be blank, if the preceding page says "the end".

    that is a good point.

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 23:59

but why? i can't see why the last page of an exam can't be blank, if the preceding page says "the end".

It might be blank, but would have "this page intentionally left blank" on it.

  • Nick30/06/2009 at 00:00

    From the wikipedia

Intentionally blank pages can be useful in standardized tests such as the GCSE, HSC, SAT, CAT, ACT, MCAT, and GRE. In these exams, there are often individual, timed sections in which test-takers are prohibited from proceeding to the next section until that section's time interval has passed and the examiner allows them to continue. Because all of these separate sections are printed consecutively in the examination booklet, it may be possible for a test-taker who has finished the section early to see through the page and read the problems in the next section. By placing intentionally blank pages between these sections, the test-taker is prevented from cheating in this way. By printing a notice on the page, such as "this page has been intentionally left blank", test-takers will not be concerned that their test has been misprinted.

I know early pit crews would come out onto the track to service the cars - the cars would stop at the side of the track. You can see this in the newsreel of the 1955 Le Mans race, the first section (before the terrible accident).

    JA's latest article

Interesting bits for me are what he thinks of the rumors of YouTube sponsoring USF1...

USF1, which is backed by one of the YouTube founders

...so he must think that's true, and what he thinks of the rumors of Virgin sponsoring Manor...

I get the impression from other F1 teams that they think this project might struggle to get the funding, despite rumours of Virgin being interested in sponsoring them, which I can’t really see.

...so I guess he thinks that isn't true.

I'm guessing this means that Manor is outsourcing the construction of the car to Simtek (who may have hung on to this capability even after shutting down their own team back in 1995). That said, since Wurth owns Simtek anyway, it's not really a full-blown outsourcing deal.

  • Amy30/06/2009 at 01:52

  • Steven Roy30/06/2009 at 02:00

Nick Wirth who was tech director of Simtek now runs a company called Wirth Research and he is designing the Manor car. He has apparently designed quite a few cars in different classes with only CFD and no wind tunnel testing at all. It will be interesting to see if CFD only works in F1.

The team effectively exists in 2 halves. Wirth does design and Manor operates the race team.

Steve Dawson... Why yes, if I remember correctly, he's the presenter of F1 here. Our version of Jake Humphrey (except he doesn't walk and talk at the same time). :D

    Why'd you ask?

  • me30/06/2009 at 02:02

ahh thought it might be lovely mediatemple. In other real problem news, im really hungry.

    pizza?

  • Joe in Fla30/06/2009 at 02:02

Nick Wirth who was tech director of Simtek now runs a company called Wirth Research and he is designing the Manor car. He has apparently designed quite a few cars in different classes with only CFD and no wind tunnel testing at all. It will be interesting to see if CFD only works in F1.

I did see that all the new teams were listed as using Cosworth engines, is that true or a typo?

  • me30/06/2009 at 02:03

    Why'd you ask?

had a lovely tweet compliment from the guy:

"Sidepodcast is charming for F1 fans. A perky girlie, a petrol head boylie, (both sweet) and lengthy asides from Joe Sewad (sp?)"

  • Journeyer30/06/2009 at 02:05

whichever SPCer wins tonight (sorry Amy?), please organize a meetup in Australia. I'm happy to pay my own costs, but would you mind flying some of our English friends out first class?

If I won $90 million I'd be happy to. I can't see that happening though. Still, you never know...

  • F1Wolf30/06/2009 at 05:55

@sidepodcast Well, you're both extremely entertaining! I present F1 to viewers right across Asia on Star Sports. I'll give you a shout out

OK, Star Sports people are watching. Now, is it a signal we should stop complaining about their certain personell or complain even more now that we now they are around ?

more than willing to pay for epic spc worldwide meetup

Should have organized an epic spc entry. Apparently, for only $54million, you can cover every entry possibility.

  • Amy30/06/2009 at 06:19

if i had a spare 54 mil i would totally do that. Guaranteed $36 mil return!

  • Paul30/06/2009 at 06:20

Well, guaranteed if nobody else wins as well. Otherwise you might be slightly out of pocket.

  • Sean Golding30/06/2009 at 06:25

Well, guaranteed if nobody else wins as well. Otherwise you might be slightly out of pocket.

Nobody won it last week when it was $50 million. It would be interesting to see how high it would go if no one wins tonight.

It would be. Probably close to 200Mill, but I would say there is no chance of a jackpot this time.

Look, the Treo *was* a good phone, thing is, it's old technology. I think that's the Windows Mobile version, so you may or may not like that software.

I guess it's OK for that price, but maybe you should look at any applications you want to run, and if they are available for Win Mobile.

  • James30/06/2009 at 06:53

Can anyone recommened a good ipod (phone/touch) docking station?, I got one but it's going back after I discovered it's fairly big downside.

Nah, its just something I saw in some junk mail that arrived today so I thought I'd check it out. I'm probably planning on spending more than that anyway.

Pity I can't say the same for my iPaq test. It's decided it no longer wants to talk to the internet - at all - which makes testing Sidepodcast Mobile somewhat tricky...

  • Alianora La Canta30/06/2009 at 08:35

I suppose that's bound to happen when you give Giedo van der Garde a F1 drive ;)

  • Alianora La Canta30/06/2009 at 08:38

    Only from Max this week saying that he has had een more people convince him he has to stand. {Comment #41}

Doesn't he understand that the reason many of these people say he has to stand is because their own positions are largely dependent on it?

A dependency is not a democracy.

  • Alianora La Canta30/06/2009 at 08:40

    in fairness it was his idea. annoyingly it was rather a good one too. {Comment #44}

That remains to be seen. It still looks like F3 with extra promotion to me, and not the affordable second-tier series Max alleged it would be.

  • Alianora La Canta30/06/2009 at 08:42

    that sounds reasonable. except, why have ythe page there at all? {Comment #54}

Because tests don't always fit neatly onto multiples of 4 pages and partly-blank pages would give rise to printing error worries (like "did they forget to put a second part of Question 4 in on this page?". This is why completely blank pages (apart from "This page is intentionally blank) are used.

  • F1Wolf30/06/2009 at 08:49

That is a nice compliment, however, 'girlie' and 'boylie' might be the most sickening words ever.

I would be more offended by the "a petrol head ...." words as the self proclaimed petrolhead on Star Sports is Mr Slater, who wants to be compared to him :-)

  • Christine30/06/2009 at 08:52

Yes, this is from Diario AS, so it's not 100% reliable, but do you think it's true?

    The source: http://bit.ly/alonsotoferrari

Thanks, Christine. Wow - a 5-year deal! That's even longer than the deal Alonso had with McLaren, if I recall correctly. I personally think a 5-year contract is too long.

There's nothing new in there, though, no reason for the rehashed story. Not even a friend of a friend's cousin's inside source.

    Yes, this is from Diario AS, so it’s not 100% reliable, but do you think it’s true? {Comment #209}

This is, I think, an indicator of "Bored Journalist Syndrome". That rumour's been going since 2004 and I see no reason to believe it more now than I did then. It's more reliable than a La Marca rumour would be, but that's not saying a huge amount.

It will be a seriously modified Fiesta. The top class at Pikes Peak are pretty wild and don't look much like the original cars.

There is a lot of effort behind the game and a lot of great presentation. It's just the game play that is ridiculous. How can you drive a lap of a track when there is no accelerator or brake only gear changing and steering?

  • Nick30/06/2009 at 17:18

I haven't managed to get it to load, but i did wonder that looking at the controls, surely stop/go is more important than gears?

  • Steven Roy30/06/2009 at 17:23

I haven't managed to get it to load, but i did wonder that looking at the controls, surely stop/go is more important than gears?

It took forever to load for me but I had about 40 tabs open at the time. The gears kind of act like the accelerator and brakes but the rev counter doesn't move so I have no idea when you are supposed to change. Also if you go into a corner too fast you don't just slide off and crash it switches to a standard film loop of a crash so I went off at the same corner twice but never actual saw my car reach the kerb so I don't know how I went off. So quite how I am meant to improve is beyond me. I tried two laps and then closed it down.

unusally for me, a quick hats off to microsoft. they're opening a new data centre in dublin tomorrow, and it's somewhat interesting that they've chosen the location due to the fact, it, well... rains a lot there.

the new server building doesn't have a roof, so the hardware is cooled by the rain and the ambient temperature, rather than massive air conditioning units. eco-friendly and cheap.

thinking we might move bits of spc there at some point in the future, maybe.

  • Christine30/06/2009 at 18:22

Is this a wind up. They are going to pack shipping containers full of servers and they think they don't need air conditioning? You would need air conditioning for that if it was in the Arctic never mind Dublin. Besides Ireland is like Scotland. Every few years you get a really sunny day where everything will fry.

  • me30/06/2009 at 18:26

I always thought electricity and water didn't mix?

they've been a bit clever in the design me thinks.

haven't looked into it in that much detail. but i think there are coolers positioned beneath the servers, it's just the lack of roof means they're needed less. and when they are required, there isn't a roof to contain the heat?

    i'm gonna have to investigate, aren't i?

  • Steven Roy30/06/2009 at 18:28

The worst-kept rumor in Formula 1 may be coming to a head soon:

Ferrari to confirm Alonso at Monza - report

Yes, this is from Diario AS, so it's not 100% reliable, but do you think it's true?

Diario AS quoted by GMM?? Are you serious?

Alonso is not going to Ferrari for next season. We went through all of this last season and it didn't happen. Both drivers are contracted for next year. This absolutely 100% is not going to happen.

Chuck everything in together. All this separation stuff is nonsense. It doesn't make the slightest difference unless you are using high temperatures. I have only ever used one setting on my washing machine and everything goes in together. In all the years I have been doing that one item has been discoloured.

I saw Piquet in the paddock at Silverstone. He rode past the tables set up outside the Formula BMW hospitality on his scooter. Thinking about it, I probably should have shouted "Oi! Piquet! You're shhhh...."
