The last day of June has rolled around (already!?) and it is Ralf Schumacher's birthday today. Yes, him, the other Schumacher. I wonder what he will be doing to celebrate his 34th birthday. Anyway, here are some of the things we've been talking about:
- Mario Theissen has become the next team boss to admit that the overtaking rules need some work. We can all see it, obviously, but it means a little bit more coming from the people who help to shape the rules in the first place. He does add that the fact the field has closed up so much is unexpected and has made things a lot more excited. Qualifying, yes, Mario. The race, not so much.
- Following on from Heikki's triumphant attempt at the Ask the Expert quiz on F1.com, Adrian Sutil steps up to have a go. He's not so hot on getting the correct answers, as Heikki managed to top the field of drivers asked so far, whilst Sutil falls way down the bottom of the order. Sounds familiar, no?
- I was thinking, you know those games where you take the best parts of various people to make an über-person? Who would make up your ideal driver? We're talking qualifying skill, overtaking ability, temperament, helmet colours, anything that makes up a driver. What do you reckon? I'm giving it some thought, let me know what you come up with.
That'll do it for now, I reckon. Feel free to discuss how quickly June has gone for you, I know it has absolutely flown for me. As ever, I will see you in the comments.
Wii test
You Wii'd correctly!
Wii Score!
No ZOMG the tennis! in the daily? Mrs C was restrained ;)
In the wrong thread for the discussion but we know it works anyway :-)
yay. cheers.
I reckon they're preparing a site overhaul april fools for 2010 secretly now, where Sidepodcast turns into DropShotCast, all the site goes bright green annd white lines, and we get a tennis related daily post.
I like that name
Hmm i can see it now F1 miniute becomes Set 1 Miniute...
I also will learn to spell then
How about this for a GP start:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IwLoI0S6mE
That is an interesting game to start.
I like how one of the Toyota's drives up the inside of, well, everyone!
I can see Amy's reply now - Heikki's qualifying skill, Hekki's overtaking ability, Heikki's temperament.....
blimey. best helmet design alone could take a while...
To be fair amy's onto something if she did that. Just for some reason she would be saying Heikki instead of Rubens
can you do past helmet designs? i liked JB's old traditional helmet.. rather than the yellow one..
Ugh, stocktake day! As much as I'm disappointed June is already over, July ought to be an excellent month.
omg 11 more days of school! wohoo! okay, time to sleep :) night all x
That's easy - Lou's.
aww you're too nice :)
i would second that. however, i did like the matt finish of hokey cokey's when he was at renault.
awesome :)
jenson had a matt finish to the one he was testing with this year.
i really should go to sleep.
I think you should ba able to do any bit of anyone from any time
agreed. i envisage a lot of googling coming up...
suggestions?
Same as Amy's but swap Gilles for Heikki?
This time of day is weird ... straddling between two daily threads!
I would definatly go with PK's survivability
schumi's luck.
multitasking!
I am - watching MotoGP as well!
Time for sleepies. Night all!
Rosbergs hair!
night lukeh.
Are we expecting much F1 news this week?
I think there's something called a race coming up.
not expecting pressers until sunday/monday though are we?
How about the intelligence of Jackie Stewart, the natural ability of Jim Clark, the never quit attitude of Gilles Villeneuve, the one lap qualifying of Ayrton Senna.
Only problem is they.he would always win.
Not this week - Goodwood first
so, we need a grid of ideal drivers?
Only from Max this week saying that he has had een more people convince him he has to stand.
Has he started hearing voices in his head?
He was all over the F2 coverage. euurgh.
in fairness it was his idea. annoyingly it was rather a good one too.
Spanish voices
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76621
And old voices
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76602
Agreed. I still don't need to see him though!
i'm pretty confident that this is the most annoying and pointless thing to ever be invented in the history of mankind:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/blank-png
can anybody shed any light on what these pages are meant to do?
They are designed to annoy people taking exams who want to use it for working space.
That's a great oxymoron though - a blank page with writing on it...
btw this is my frustration of the last few weeks, not actual fact ;-)
Tremayne?
It's to make sure you know there has not been a printing error and that there is no useful information on the page.
If you'd asked me a week or two ago..
that sounds reasonable. except, why have ythe page there at all?
They are so printing errors can be identified, usualy in exams
if you only have 3 pages of content, you still have 4 sides
If that makes any sense!
how?
that is interesting... but why not make it the last page, instead of the second?
They normaly say at the start o an exam please ensure the booklet has writting on every page.
apart from the bold text there is usually also a code in tiny footer writting
I have seen it both ways... sometimes they have source material to use that they want to position next to the question
but why? i can't see why the last page of an exam can't be blank, if the preceding page says "the end".
I mean on the opposite page...
Layout? So you can't read the writing on the back of page 1 through the paper?
that is a good point.
It might be blank, but would have "this page intentionally left blank" on it.
From the wikipedia
Intentionally blank pages can be useful in standardized tests such as the GCSE, HSC, SAT, CAT, ACT, MCAT, and GRE. In these exams, there are often individual, timed sections in which test-takers are prohibited from proceeding to the next section until that section's time interval has passed and the examiner allows them to continue. Because all of these separate sections are printed consecutively in the examination booklet, it may be possible for a test-taker who has finished the section early to see through the page and read the problems in the next section. By placing intentionally blank pages between these sections, the test-taker is prevented from cheating in this way. By printing a notice on the page, such as "this page has been intentionally left blank", test-takers will not be concerned that their test has been misprinted.
Good night all, off to Norway in the morning, will be back Thursday...
ok. that makes some sense.
now.
why the heck have alesis opted to use the same system in their manual? i hope they're not timing me?
Have fun :-)
I'm off too, meeting up with crazy techie man tomorrow, may or may not be online Weds, then offline completely until Sunday!
see ya buddy.
careful he doesn't sell you a betamax player.
Night! Have fun!
PS check if they have fish and chips ;)
That'll be for layout purposes, so every chapter or section starts on a right-hand page.
heheh :-)
He wants me to bring my PC with me. I'm a bit scared.
Sometimes they put them in novels to confuse and disorientate the reader
so it does!
fine, you guys win. i still think it's stoopid though.
night pat
seconded.
H2G2 offers an alternative:
"The page on which this statement has been printed has been intentionally left such that this statement is the only statement printed on it."
:P
Aha I have found a circuit which Is used in reverse!
F1 races have been run there in the last 5 years..
Any guesses?
I have discovered itis very easy to google, grr i shouldnt have wasted so long on this...
Fuji
Fuji
I did find a good explanation of the reason most tracks run clockwise though.
really? do enlighten me
http://bit.ly/ppi9z
It is plausible.
Up untill sunken pits...
http://www.hallettracing.com/
This circuit also runs in both directions
If the British GP goes back to Silverstone next year would they run the new moto gp configuration?
I know early pit crews would come out onto the track to service the cars - the cars would stop at the side of the track. You can see this in the newsreel of the 1955 Le Mans race, the first section (before the terrible accident).
It could be a good question for joe. why is it called 'the pits'?
how 'bout we ask christine?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2007/08/13/sidepodcasts-history-of-f1-part-1/
Brilliant :D
Right i am off off bed, newly informed and tennis balls still flying around my head...
night sir.
bed for me too. Night
see ya tomorrow.
JA's latest article
Interesting bits for me are what he thinks of the rumors of YouTube sponsoring USF1...
...so he must think that's true, and what he thinks of the rumors of Virgin sponsoring Manor...
...so I guess he thinks that isn't true.
glad i slept through that match last night, too much murray love round these 'ere parts ;). Mobile doohickey not working :(.
Does Simtek build race cars?
mobly seems okay to me (posted as a test)?
am on mobly now. got it to work, but took 3 tries to make it work.
I saw that Manor is getting their car from Simtek, surely it can't be an old Simtek, like Aguri did
I'm guessing this means that Manor is outsourcing the construction of the car to Simtek (who may have hung on to this capability even after shutting down their own team back in 1995). That said, since Wurth owns Simtek anyway, it's not really a full-blown outsourcing deal.
i get error 502 telling me server is wrong or temporarily unavailable due to overloading.
the building that joe visited recently (the one with the simulator), presumably that's who'd building the car?
i guess they're choosing to do so under the name simtek?
sounds par for the media temple course. it'll probs be okay now.
Well I was glad to see that USF1 is standing tall. I keep waiting for their website to open up. I am interested to see if Peter Winsor is true to his word of having webcams and relatively open access
We haven't heard about those webcams since the launch, which seems a loooong time ago now...
i guess it's safe to say that at this point...
I sent them an e-mail early on hoping they would get some simple t-shirt or hats to get the ball rolling. Then the USGPE thing happen. But since they are USF1 again, hoping things start happening
ahh thought it might be lovely mediatemple. In other real problem news, im really hungry.
Nick Wirth who was tech director of Simtek now runs a company called Wirth Research and he is designing the Manor car. He has apparently designed quite a few cars in different classes with only CFD and no wind tunnel testing at all. It will be interesting to see if CFD only works in F1.
The team effectively exists in 2 halves. Wirth does design and Manor operates the race team.
question for journeyer. what do you know of steve dawson? he do commentary down your neck of the woods?
Steve Dawson... Why yes, if I remember correctly, he's the presenter of F1 here. Our version of Jake Humphrey (except he doesn't walk and talk at the same time). :D
Why'd you ask?
pizza?
I did see that all the new teams were listed as using Cosworth engines, is that true or a typo?
had a lovely tweet compliment from the guy:
"Sidepodcast is charming for F1 fans. A perky girlie, a petrol head boylie, (both sweet) and lengthy asides from Joe Sewad (sp?)"
My estimation of him has just gone up 5 notches. :D
Hoping to see more people from my neck of the woods pop up here. :)
:)
if he comes back to us, shall give you a shout-out. of course, if you were on twitter...
AAAchhhh! :P
hehe.
So far it is true
Time for bed. Night all
lunch time! GET IN THERE!!!!
Afternoon everyone, just got up...at 13:15...
id be doing much the same if i didnt have to start work at 8.30 today. As it was i woke up at 8.17. Made it on time though. And by on time i mean at 8.35 and no one noticed :)
That reminds me, I have to call my work today. Thanks for that.
Honestly, I don't know how you two do it.
She started talking about work which reminded me about my work. You tend to forget what you were supposed to be doing that day when you wake up in the afternoon. ;)
i figure today must be my last day at work since i am going to win $90 mil tonight
I have no plan to win 90 mil tonight but at least I know we have holiday here tomorrow :-)
Oi, thats mine. Keep off. ;)
Yay! I called, and I have a shift for the first time in three weeks!
Morning. Just happened to see on a report on ITV a taxi with an R29 on the side in London.
hello to amy's "soon to be ex" boss
Why!!
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/engineering/article6605832.ece
I don't care if its only available to people who have bought one of their proper cars, its still horrendous in my opinion.
whichever SPCer wins tonight (sorry Amy?), please organize a meetup in Australia. I'm happy to pay my own costs, but would you mind flying some of our English friends out first class?
If I won $90 million I'd be happy to. I can't see that happening though. Still, you never know...
@sidepodcast Well, you're both extremely entertaining! I present F1 to viewers right across Asia on Star Sports. I'll give you a shout out
OK, Star Sports people are watching. Now, is it a signal we should stop complaining about their certain personell or complain even more now that we now they are around ?
If I win, I'll fly us all to Monaco. We can book out one of those casinos.
I vote for you winning.
:D
more than willing to pay for epic spc worldwide meetup
Should have organized an epic spc entry. Apparently, for only $54million, you can cover every entry possibility.
if i had a spare 54 mil i would totally do that. Guaranteed $36 mil return!
Well, guaranteed if nobody else wins as well. Otherwise you might be slightly out of pocket.
Nobody won it last week when it was $50 million. It would be interesting to see how high it would go if no one wins tonight.
It would be. Probably close to 200Mill, but I would say there is no chance of a jackpot this time.
Chances are slim, but it would be pretty cool.
Hmm, does anybody know if this phone is any good? Dick Smith have it on sale for $197 from $497 and its time for a new phone so I'm considering it.
http://www.palm.com/au/products/smartphones/treo500/
Look, the Treo *was* a good phone, thing is, it's old technology. I think that's the Windows Mobile version, so you may or may not like that software.
I guess it's OK for that price, but maybe you should look at any applications you want to run, and if they are available for Win Mobile.
Can anyone recommened a good ipod (phone/touch) docking station?, I got one but it's going back after I discovered it's fairly big downside.
Oh and morning :D
Yay!
I say constructive criticism. Point out strengths and areas for improvement. :)
There's heaps of them, what downside? Does it not charge for instance?
Could you live comment on it? ;)
Nah, its just something I saw in some junk mail that arrived today so I thought I'd check it out. I'm probably planning on spending more than that anyway.
Now we'll have to keep an eye out for the shoutout. Has SPC ever gotten a shoutout on TV? Or in Asia, even?
Personally I would go for something newer. I am pretty sure you can't upgrade the OS on these things either.
I don't think so on either count... You or F1Wolf will have to record it!
I'm going to start seriously looking around for a new phone soon. It's about time I got a new one, my current phone doesn't even have enough battery charge to make a call for more than 10mins.
It has a clock and lets just say when it's dark it was lighting up my room :D
Ah yes, I've had that problem.
I have nothing in the way of video recording. Wolf, are you better off than I am?
It has taught me that in future I need to research these things better. I found reviews after stating this problem, at the time I was just like "YAY IPOD DOCK"
*finding the problem
It's amazing how bright things seem in your bedroom at night. Try looking for one with LCD rather than LED digits, and maybe with adjustable back light
Thanks, the brightness could be changed but even at its lowest setting it was still way to bright.
well, I won't be wining the $90 million, the site won't let me buy my ticket and I'm not kidding when I say if I can't do things online I don't do them.
I didn't even know you could buy online. Why won't it let you?
It just keeps giving me the error "Error 627 - General. Sorry your request cannot be serviced at present"
It's probably crashed under the demand.
Yeah, I can see that being a problem.
It's probably best I don't write down the numbers on my unbuyable ticket, just in case
ooh, scratch that, it worked when I tried for the 10th time.
I have, but haven't managed to set it up :-)
Stratch the fact that you can't buy a ticket or scratch the fact that you won't be winning?
Maybe it was a scratchcard?
scratch that I can't buy one. Now that I have bought one I will be for sure winning for sure. For sure.
You have just under 2 weeks to do it. ;)
That is a nice compliment, however, 'girlie' and 'boylie' might be the most sickening words ever.
In the wrong thread for the discussion but we know it works anyway {Comment #4}
Pity I can't say the same for my iPaq test. It's decided it no longer wants to talk to the internet - at all - which makes testing Sidepodcast Mobile somewhat tricky...
How about this for a GP start: {Comment #10}
I suppose that's bound to happen when you give Giedo van der Garde a F1 drive ;)
Only from Max this week saying that he has had een more people convince him he has to stand. {Comment #41}
Doesn't he understand that the reason many of these people say he has to stand is because their own positions are largely dependent on it?
A dependency is not a democracy.
in fairness it was his idea. annoyingly it was rather a good one too. {Comment #44}
That remains to be seen. It still looks like F3 with extra promotion to me, and not the affordable second-tier series Max alleged it would be.
that sounds reasonable. except, why have ythe page there at all? {Comment #54}
Because tests don't always fit neatly onto multiples of 4 pages and partly-blank pages would give rise to printing error worries (like "did they forget to put a second part of Question 4 in on this page?". This is why completely blank pages (apart from "This page is intentionally blank) are used.
I would be more offended by the "a petrol head ...." words as the self proclaimed petrolhead on Star Sports is Mr Slater, who wants to be compared to him :-)
Hehehe. I am not offended, just not a fan of the words :)
I have never heard 'boylie' before. It sounds like 'boil-ey', which I definately wouldn't want to be.
Morning all,
So – seems like A1GP has joined Jacko on the slab...
All official like? Cos I know people were pondering it's potential demise a while back.
Also, how are you feeling?
Not yet, but heard from a good source.
Not brilliant, but off to the doc tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed that the problem can be resolved without, er, what once happened to Cartman in an early episode of South Park...
It's a shame, but then I never watched it so it's not like I helped matters.
Ah, um, okay, good luck with that!
http://www.yasmarinacircuit.com/experience/
this should be virtual drive around abu dhabi track, but takes forewer to load (at least for me)
I think my iTouch hates me the internal speaker isn't working now :(
I thought it was loading quickly for me, turns out they were just the first two loading screens... Still, at least it makes nice F1 noises on the third loading screen.
oh, hello large Heikki on the AUTOSPORT home page
Seems like he thinks he will be at McLaren next year ;)
ha! Even I don't think that :D
So – seems like A1GP has joined Jacko on the slab… {Comment #189}
That's a pity. It would have helped if it had been on terrestrial TV, but it was an interesting concept. Besides, how's Tonio Liuzzi going to stay race-sharp now?
Not brilliant, but off to the doc tomorrow afternoon. {Comment #192}
Get well soon, Stuart.
Not really worth the loading time in my opinion. Still its good to get a look at the track I guess.
Seems like he thinks he will be at McLaren next year ;) {Comment #198}
Either his contract negotiations are going much better than I'd imagined or he's got more faith in the situation than is perhaps warranted.
Doesn't he have a contract to race in 2010?
contracts are there to be broken :-)
Tis true, that. But still, I think FIF1 would take a punt at Liuzzi.
My laptime was over 3 minutes, but then I realised I was only using gear 1 half way round :P
Amy, my room is free during the Rally Finland. Maybe Heikki will come to pint and laugh at Kimi.
Interested?
The worst-kept rumor in Formula 1 may be coming to a head soon:
Ferrari to confirm Alonso at Monza - report
Yes, this is from Diario AS, so it's not 100% reliable, but do you think it's true?
i've thought it to be true for the past 18months.
The source: http://bit.ly/alonsotoferrari
haven't we all? :D but not everyone has been convinced by the rumor, especially for it pushing through in 2010 rather than 2011.
Thanks, Christine. Wow - a 5-year deal! That's even longer than the deal Alonso had with McLaren, if I recall correctly. I personally think a 5-year contract is too long.
There's nothing new in there, though, no reason for the rehashed story. Not even a friend of a friend's cousin's inside source.
Doesn’t he have a contract to race in 2010? {Comment #204}
According to rumour. I don't trust the rumour, and besides he'll need practise at racing if he is going to make a success of any 2010 F1 race drive.
Hehehe. :D So why would it come out now? Maybe they just waited for the breakaway threat to end?
Tis true, that. But still, I think FIF1 would take a punt at Liuzzi. {Comment #206}
I'm not convinced it would be in FIF1's best interests, but there you go...
With this article coming out at the same time as news confirming Kimi's WRC one-off debut, might we see Kimi move to rallying (whether WRC or IRC) for next year?
Maybe they are sick of talking about politics too!
Do the press ever tire of it? But hey, that's a good idea there. :)
Yes, this is from Diario AS, so it’s not 100% reliable, but do you think it’s true? {Comment #209}
This is, I think, an indicator of "Bored Journalist Syndrome". That rumour's been going since 2004 and I see no reason to believe it more now than I did then. It's more reliable than a La Marca rumour would be, but that's not saying a huge amount.
that's not a large heikki. this is a large heikki:
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/06/28/lifes-a-struggle/
That's not a knife, THIS is a knife!
Sorry, it just reminded me of that for some reason. ;)
that mighta been my intention ;)
with my $90 million in my pocket, I'm there.
I often think to myself 'F1 Big Picture needs more Heikki'
A step in the right direction ;)
its lotto draw time!
ITS ALL GONE HORRIBLY WRONG
They can't possibly have rigged it two weeks in a row?
They didn't want me to have more than 2 numbers. When you can't even win division 7, division 1 is a long way away. Damn. No Finish Rally for me.
and by FInish I mean Finnish.
I concur...
Boooooo!
Hopefully it went horribly wrong for the other 20 million people in the country and we have a shot at even more next week.
I don't like feeling like I have to continually buy lotto tickets. I don't normally buy more than one a year, this almost feels like problem gambling :D
Morning Everyone!
did they at least put a (Sorry Amy) on the screen?
still OK here, still day off tomorrow :-)
No, they obviously don't understand the laws of the universe.
Perhaps I should put a (Sorry, Amy) on the screen?
I wonder if me writing about Adrian Sutil's crash in Q1 the exact moment of the draw had anything to do with the "crash out" from the Lotto competition?
Does anyone know how to stop wisdom teeth from being so annoying?
with pliers
I suspect that might make them more annoying
Does anyone know how to stop wisdom teeth from being so annoying? {Comment #240}
With a dentist? Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area.
I had never bought one before this week. I don't mind buying them for an even bigger draw though.
vodka.
but rememeber that Sidepod people have history winning things :-) you may be the next
She is one of the suspects for starting all this!
wouldn't that make you something of a bad influence Mr C?
Other sidepodprizes may have had slightly better odds than 1 in 45 million
unlikely does not mean impossible :-)
just helping a fellow commenter in need...
damn my pessimistic nature!
:D
Is vodka even legal at this time of day?
:D
Ross Brawn on Silverstone - "With all due respect we were racing Williams and Ferrari at Silverstone, and we don't normally do that. I don't think they made a step, I think we struggled a bit."
Wow, what a change 12 months can make.
Pretend you are here in Aus, its almost 9:30pm. After enough vodka, you'll start to believe yourself too!
I'm sure they would say different :P
More tennis already?
We only just finished last night!
Talking of which, these visual things are way cool.
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/momentum/index.html
Yup - starts in 10 minutes. Safina-Lisicki on Centre Court, while its Venus-Radwanska on Court 1.
ooh, just enough time to get some toffee crunchy nut cornflakes
They already have doubles on with the amusing combo of Wood/Wood
Veterans matches are SO GOOD
Ahh this is the greatest cereal in the history of time. Every time I see the 'Limited Time Only' on the box I die a little inside.
Stockpile!
I did! Then I ate them all....
Time for a new stockpile :D
Perhaps you need a bigger one this time...
Toffee crunchy nut? I have never heard of it. I'll have to try some.
It's like they took a cereal that was already perfect and made it better
Ive checked, we dont have it here...
I will stick with my lucky charms ;)
aw link failure
I could live off cereal, I'm a big fan, but Froot Loops and Lucky Charms are the two I can't handle. Too much sweetness!
Are your nutrition tables always in kJ (and not in kcal)?
I know, Lucky charms dont count as cerial, they are confectionary :D
My local shop started selling pop tarts a week or so ago, which are tempting me to defect...
yes, and it drives me nuts because kcal are the only measurement I understand. About 50% of products have both though.
I have a mate that works for Kelloggs, I'm going to get him to get me some.
Apparently in their staff Kelloggs shop, they can get any box of cereal of any size for a flat rate of $2. I could live out of that shop.
My home town has the NZ Cadbury factory, and being a small town it was about 1 degree of separation to someone who worked there. Their staff shop certainly was a magical source of chocolate :D
I like the Coors brewery in colorado... anyone can walk in and get 3 free beers, everyday.
the only rule is you can only go once a day.
the brewery in my town only has free spring water. Free beer sounds like a much better plan.
Sorry Amy.
From Twitter: Div1: 2 provisional winners of $53,274,992.38 each. One from Queensland, one from South Australia.
I don't know anyone in QLD or SA :(
You should have gone to Queensland... Its sunny there too
Too tropical. Boo humidity.
hehehe
Damn Queenslanders...
I am not here.
But I couldn't resist posting this. Last week a few of us had a discussion about the Pikes Peak hillclimb lamenting how it had once been huge news and now it passes unnoticed each year. Well not this year. Double world rally champion Marcus Gronholm is taking an 800bhp Ford Focus up the hill this year.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76627
Wow, its a fiesta... New competitor for that Suzuki everyone loves in Gran Turismo,
I didn't think it was possible to put 800bhp into a Ford Fiesta!
It will be a seriously modified Fiesta. The top class at Pikes Peak are pretty wild and don't look much like the original cars.
I don't know if any of the iphone fans will be interested in this but I found a little article detailing the costs of all the bits that go to make it. It was more expensive than I thought.
http://www.evertiq.com/news/14499
That is a fair amount. It will surely become cheaper for apple to make in the future though.
Safina loses Set 1 on a double-fault in the tiebreak. Wow.
Ooh inspiration strikes...
I finaly have a political blog article i want to write... :D
Components always come down in price as more capable items are introduced but the phone spec will change to suit. The actual manufacturing cost is effectively nothing.
This comment's only purpose is to let me know what sound it will make when it is posted.
http://racingpolitics.wordpress.com/2009/06/30/through-the-eyes-of-empire/
Please let me know what you think!
Good comparisons. I like it. :D
women are boring. sleep now.
Heh. Night, Amy.
Parting shot:
Not only has A1 gone pop, so has Speedcar.
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/149178/1/speedcar_goes_pop_as_financial_bubble_bursts.html
I haz netbook (medion). It is tiny (10"). It has Windows XP. I forgot how difficult Windows is.
i give it 10 mins before you overwrite with ubuntu.
Argh, I hate my life. Mr C, when are you taking up tennis so I can quit work?
Oh noes, whats up?
Should I send round some of the boys with their 'violin cases'?
Yes please!
OK, you might want to pop out to the shops for a coffee, get round the cormer and run. Pretend you know nothing tomorrow ;)
I make ah some calls
If you could specifically target the people that make me feel this big *holds finger and thumb up with no space at all*
Gotcha, don't they know you're a media star?
[Tuts and shakes head at Christine's colleagues]
I'll bring my big lollypop ;)
Howdy all :D
Hey Jon
Yes! Like the Sidepodcast version of a mob with pitchforks.
Do these people have an F1-blog thats kicks @$$ like SPC?
They have nothing on you ;)
Did I hear the words mobs and pitchforks? Woo
Hey everybody.
Hey dude
ooo i'm up for that!
afternoon all :)
while we are being a mob with pitchforks can we go after max too?
i wondered when that was coming :D
that's a yes then? ;)
heya lou
It would be a shame to waste the mob, wouldn't it?
Get these people to listen to this week's TWiT. At the end of the show they do who's on first. I hadn't heard that in at least ten years before Christine did it now it's everywhere. I bet these stupid people don't even know who'e on first.
it certainly would ;) could we stretch it to going to see Eddie Jordan too?
Dont worry about them, after all how many of those people does Rob even know exist?
Get the Sidepodmob to go on a Sidepodtour?
This is a good point! Thanks Nick :)
yes!! :D
Awww.
I like the sounds of that.
I am quite the trendsetter!
Because all you lovely people are great for a good cause...only yourselves required...
http://jonwaldock.wordpress.com/2009/06/30/ok-so-well/
I'm loving this weather, i just won an argument over the phone on the grounds 'its too hot to argue'
I take it as a small moral victory
haha :) speaking of the weather i'm off to go sit outside and do some homework. speak to you all later!
Awesome stuff, and cos I'm a kind guy, i'm gonna leave a comment
aww, arent you nice
earlier, i was trying to work out whether sun cream would be a good idea or not....it may stop me burning...but it being oily, it causes you to slowly roast instead
byee
See ya lou.
Wish it was more sunny here, its just humid.
high 5 for your cricket record!
*High 5*
And the only way I scored them runs was cos I edged it...
You are supposed to rub it in!
It always amazes me how many people in this country use it wrongly!
i was watching some year 4's playing today thinking "they're better than me..."
Ahaha.
I think I only got picked cos I was the only one mad enough to stand up to the stumps.
That is a bit stupid ;)
Typical Australians, they get the one white whale in a blue moon and no one thinks to call it Moby Dick
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8126237.stm
Heh, when your the 6th highest scorer in the team with 2, you know how bad my school team is.
My world has just ended...i shall let show you why in a bit
this...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/8-jpg-2
now looks like this....
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image026-jpg
:( :( :( boo
Noooooo
Someone fall into it or something?
The wind? Hodlums?
theives?
it will have either been the wind, or someone throw something at it, but its pretty well hidden down the side of our house, so they'd ahve to be trying.
im going for the wind
Someone sent me this earlier, for our Antipodean cousins:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/aussie-tourist-info-jpg
Ahh, that sucks
i have to work out what to do now, i reckon half of it is still in tact, i just have to put something heavier on top so it dosent blow off again.
Thank goodness for the convict/maneating koala equilibrium!
Yas Marina looks great for a swim..
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/yas-marina-png
I wonder if Horner or Brawn will be thrown in in november?
Fill them full of water
oooh, good idea. but that would innevatably bring on a hose pipe ban
There is a Yas Marina driving game on the net somewhere. I really recommend that anyone who see's it advertised ignores it. It is rubbish.
They are making more of an effort than most
working outside didn't go too well.. i'm now back in the safety of the office, where the wind can't chuck my essay in my face, and i wont get the sniffles because of the flowers...
There is a lot of effort behind the game and a lot of great presentation. It's just the game play that is ridiculous. How can you drive a lap of a track when there is no accelerator or brake only gear changing and steering?
I haven't managed to get it to load, but i did wonder that looking at the controls, surely stop/go is more important than gears?
It took forever to load for me but I had about 40 tabs open at the time. The gears kind of act like the accelerator and brakes but the rev counter doesn't move so I have no idea when you are supposed to change. Also if you go into a corner too fast you don't just slide off and crash it switches to a standard film loop of a crash so I went off at the same corner twice but never actual saw my car reach the kerb so I don't know how I went off. So quite how I am meant to improve is beyond me. I tried two laps and then closed it down.
Winnnnnner!!
My plugging worked, i'm now 3 over my current monthly maximum
does it count if i read the post in my feed reader?
dunno, not a clue really, but i'll let you off if not ;)
So thats why nobody reads my posts :P
Continuing the Yas theme, JAllen has blogged about it and thinks it will be 41 degrees...In November?...Must be global warming
Evenin' :)
soz. read both of yours in the feedreader too.
btw. how come your blogs don't cross promote each other?
yo!
You're chirpy this evening. ;)
must be the weather.
He must be making up for me. I think perhaps only one half of Sidepodcast can be happy at any one time.
well that, plus firefox 3.5 has been released. tis much better (although the audio alerts on doohickey aren't working as expected):
http://en-gb.www.mozilla.com/en-GB/
Ooh, interesting. Will update now.
I think i am going to keep the politics blog to f1 only, but i will add everyone on the parody one....
I see... *strokes chin*
Didnt they invent alcohol to help universally equalise happiness?
They did. There is wine nearby. However, I also need to work on the mini series and I am not sure the two go hand in hand :)
Homer Simpson said it best: "To alcohol - the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."
Ah, so we know it isn't about Kimi then...
they had that on the wall of the bar i was in on Saturday, shame i was only sober enough to read half of it...
do you need a hug? ;)
Hehehe.
aawww, but i likes the parody one too :(
FF updated to 3.5. Thank god they've added a tab button. IE's had that for ages, yet it was FF that pioneered tabs. Weird.
Huh?
dont worry its not going anywhere...
oh good. read it as... never mind.
lclt should be a bit quicker too.
I just meant will add anyone's blog on any subject to the links, but the politics blog will only have f1 dedicated links
;)
unusally for me, a quick hats off to microsoft. they're opening a new data centre in dublin tomorrow, and it's somewhat interesting that they've chosen the location due to the fact, it, well... rains a lot there.
the new server building doesn't have a roof, so the hardware is cooled by the rain and the ambient temperature, rather than massive air conditioning units. eco-friendly and cheap.
thinking we might move bits of spc there at some point in the future, maybe.
I always thought electricity and water didn't mix?
Is this a wind up. They are going to pack shipping containers full of servers and they think they don't need air conditioning? You would need air conditioning for that if it was in the Arctic never mind Dublin. Besides Ireland is like Scotland. Every few years you get a really sunny day where everything will fry.
they've been a bit clever in the design me thinks.
haven't looked into it in that much detail. but i think there are coolers positioned beneath the servers, it's just the lack of roof means they're needed less. and when they are required, there isn't a roof to contain the heat?
i'm gonna have to investigate, aren't i?
Diario AS quoted by GMM?? Are you serious?
Alonso is not going to Ferrari for next season. We went through all of this last season and it didn't happen. Both drivers are contracted for next year. This absolutely 100% is not going to happen.
Another day done... *falls on bed*
One step closer to goodwood though
Yep. Can't see GMM anywhere on the page but it sounds like something they would print
Yas Game officially rubbish
Yas circuit... Spectacular!
Hello lukeh
re: ms and their lack of cover:
"You may notice there is no roof and some might be uncomfortable with this. We explored the need of one and throughout our research we got some surprising (positive) results that showed one wasn’t needed."
"We have talked openly and publicly about building chiller-less data centers and running our facilities using aggressive outside economization."
linkage
Am not surprised!! How are you meant to keep the outside out?
Do you think they know that cloud computing and rain clouds are not exactly the same thing or even compatible?
They say it's a new feature
Don't they know outside = bad? Don't we say it enough?
If Black isn't a colour then am i not allowed to put it in the washing machine with 'coloured' items?
am wondering if they get much in the way of lightning, with all that dublin rain?
Its sending a bad message to computer users everywhere. Shame on you MS
for lukeh:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/video/
they have an awesome bar!
Wouldn't think so. Well not much beyond what is going to be created on the ground. I assume any server building is going to have lightning conductors.
awesome!! literally!
Wouldn't you have to put it in with the whites?
are you serious?!?
oh man
Chuck everything in together. All this separation stuff is nonsense. It doesn't make the slightest difference unless you are using high temperatures. I have only ever used one setting on my washing machine and everything goes in together. In all the years I have been doing that one item has been discoloured.
I would agree with that, i left a white shirt in my coloured wash, whoops.
Anywho, Blacks in the coloured wash, whites in the whites!!
Does anyone know enough about Linux to tell me if this is plausable?
http://www.plop.at/en/dialogue_flybook.html
is it not just a tablet pc running linux?
yes, although it doesn't run windows tablet, it has its own software,
I have found better instructions.
http://www.fuschlberger.net/flybook/0
I can do instructions!
:)
do you own one then? they seem insanely pricey.
Hopefully my Puma Fan Report will be up sometime tomorrow :)
its 4 years old...
And i got it cheap, as part of a job ;)
good man. will keep our eyes peeled.
I also wouldn't recommend it, the battery only lasted 9 months, its now very close to useless, and i think its quite difficult to get spares, although i haven't looked lately
hmm would windows 7 be better?
no idea if the touchscreen drivers would be compatible?
on 512Mb of ram? I don't think so...
According to Tim's text, they're just trying to get the final video edit and then push it live tomorrow. He'll text me when it's up.
good point, the ubuntu wins...
That was in version 3 though, not new for 3.5 :P
was it still awesome in 3?
I for one welcome an awesome bar in any edition
the awesome bar is awesome.
fact
understood.
can i just say, i still prefer safari 4.
Yes :D in fact everything in the video was the same as 3, the only new bit is that 3.5 is twice as fast.
I would probably use chrome over firefox if it weren't for those meddlin' extensions.
oh extensions, you do know how to win a welshman's browser favourtism
And it plays every format of video without needing a plugin.
reaaaaaaaaaally? :o
True but that wasn't in that video :P
(or I missed it)
This is the greatest day in the history of mankind
Man walks on the moon, the berlin wall comes down, Firefox plays all videos
not so fast, only ogg video and sound...
not true.
agreed. none of our h.264 videos work natively in ff3.5, but they do in safari.
firefox, you have overshadowed a great day. Shame on you.
*tuts*
The start up page lied to me!
*shakes fist at start-up page*
Is it as fast as chrome?
I wouldn't know, I stick with Firefox. I get other people to check out websites I make :D
Seems the same as 3.## to me or whatever version I had before.
erm. no, it doesn't appear to be.
tearing out tabs to form new windows is rather clunky by comparison.
the script error that plagued lclt doesn't happen in 3.5 though does it?
Hasn't so far :D
It hasn't appeared on Ubuntu repositories yet... :-(
My laptop will be most unhappy :|
Speaking of laptops, mine likes 3.5. Long gone are days of Firefox being a resource :)
Piquet Update:
http://twitter.com/NelsonPiquet_
Now that I think about it, I hope it is upgraded/backported now and that we don't have to wait until 9.10...
I saw Piquet in the paddock at Silverstone. He rode past the tables set up outside the Formula BMW hospitality on his scooter. Thinking about it, I probably should have shouted "Oi! Piquet! You're shhhh...."
Eeek. Thats a prize worth winning
*Piquet looks angrily*
....uuurreee gonna be champion one day! *awkward thumbs up*
:D
amazed he has the balance.
Plus he had a guy on the back as well.
Isn't that a perfect recipe to crash?
stabilizers then?
I feel sorry for whoever Renault handpicked out for that experience
I think if he went to a better team he would surprise us all, look at hekki
I do admit though, Nels' contibution to twitter picture wise especially has been fantastic
i'm still hoping he will persuade another driver to join...
jenson after 03 would be another example
WOAH WOAH WOAH
WHEN DID RUBENS GET TWITTER?!
clink?
treal rubens?
http://twitter.com/rubarrichello
Photos on twitpic down in his messages surely prove it's him, ltos of very lovely family stuff....
All brazilian though!
Or is it all portugese I mean? I forgot what they speak in Brazil...
His official site says it's real! :O:O:O:O:O:O
haha, suziperry is on twitter and talking to fakef1 people!
http://twitter.com/suziperry
wow... well that's one way to learn Portuguese...
Evening.
Is everyone cheery today? Just need to balance out my evil mood.
i'm alright thanks, bit of a headache cause of the humidity but nothing to complain about. Lukeh will probably be able to balance out your mood... he just found Rubens on twitter ;)
I am! 2 days till goodwood
Today has been a bit rubbish. Except THE LAST 5 AWESOME MINUTES.
Mr C even said Yo! earlier... ;)
Don't worry - it's not Christine's turn to be cheery today. For what reason, I have no idea...
Just found another official twitter (to crash into and get sworn at perhaps) - juan pablo montoya
http://twitter.com/jpmontoya
I haven't had any alcohol in 8 years...
I feel the urge to drink an entire bottle of 21yr old whisky at the moment.
JPM has a GT-R?! Son of a...
A playstation car that easy to drive - just what he needs.
You got to wonder though is it worth following Piquet for the chance of getting a signed visor? :D
:D
That doesnt sound great...
Would a pic of the new aston give you something to chuckle at?
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/article6605832.ece
See you're already harnessing the linguistic stylings of JPM
He tweets from his mobile too!
someone on ebay may want it....
Is there a badge to tell if people are official, i heard something about it
I found one! :D
http://twitter.com/TonyKanaan
I'd want it.
Very true, but he might personalise it :P
Better odds that Amy's lottery, 1 in 20000 (or so) :D
The iQ based car?
It's a good idea for Aston - saves them some money and helps balance out the penalties they'll get.
I also don't think it's that bad looking in the model.
JPM AND RUBENS TALK TO EACH OTHER ON TWITTER!!!!!
*explodes*
And here's proof - from JPM to Rubens:
well in that case you'd want to sell it to a piquet fan who had the same name ;)
He seems to have confused JPM with me. Its ok I'll let him off this tme
i have heard of this guy but i dont know why http://twitter.com/LucianoBurti
There's a link on that article to 10 moments from Vauxhalls glory days...
There was 10?
Lotus Carlton
VX220
Errrrr....
Manta GT/E?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQudfSNZDC0
gees, that was nasty
There's a whole load of nasty accidents involving Burti. He was accident prone.
Heehee, Jakeys provided me with a nice little thing for me to make
Rubens message to JPM = fala comigo gordo
"talk to me fat"
Olivera http://twitter.com/jpdeoliveira
Pizzonia http://twitter.com/AntonioPizzonia
It was pretty bad. I watched it live and I didn't think there was going to be much of him left.
None more recent than 1954. Says it all really.
Jake and EJ; the epic story featuring trials, tribulations and a hot air balloon
enjoy :P
Oops.. last thing should say Nurburgring. Dunno where turkey came from...
I'm browsing a site which sells a lot of racing cars on it, and I'm thinking that it's time that I should have another track car.
F3000 perhaps...
Post a link and let the commenters choose just like Alex does with drinks
If I do that, I'll get a Skoda or Lada, or worse... a TVR
Probably running on elderflower petrol but it may be fun
Whats the site?
Not one for plugging
http://thenorthernwaffler.blogspot.com/2009/06/speed-dust-and-fighting.html
But I will plug. About the speedway, features pics.
http://www.racecarsdirect.com
Shopping for stuff like this in my mood is always a recipe for disaster.
I want them all....
There might be some more Ferrari powered single seaters on there soon...
wooohooo!!!!! tickets to goodwood are now booked!!!!!!!!
I'll be there on Sunday (dad realised he only wanted us to go for 1 day :( so i chose the day Jenson would be there ;) )
yay! :D
Awesome stuff. I am reading the wikipedia entry now...
Enjoy
goodwood is amazing! :D
i'm a little excited... i thought about charging my camera now, but then realised it isn't saturday yet.
Get a checklist for batteries, memory cards etc
Anyone know where I can get my hands on 3.5 million quid tomorrow?
i tend to know the checklist off by heart, it's usually what i take when i go out to take photos for the day... however i really don't want to forget anything so yes, i'll be writing a checklist :D
If you can act like a bank manager, the government is your friend
Yes. Pick 6 numbers and you will only need another million-ish
Do they still do the lottery on Wednesdays?
I should really do that...
Hmmm.
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/23279/15_GP_Masters_Single_Seaters__2_Two_Seaters.html
Yep
I'm probably thinking of getting a digital camera for WSR, something that's got a decent zoom and pixel quality for a reasonable price. Need to start hunting me thinks.
There is a very reasonable Arrows F1 car there
Had spotted that.
It's on the list.
Who knew you could get F1 cars for £37.500?
Didnt Aguri Suzuki buy a couple of them?
Jackie Stewart says in his book that the Tyrell he won the World Championship in cost £22,500. That was the early 1970s though
:D
We have a winner. Lotus 97T chassis 1
I need to win the lottery tomorrow night
Right, night all :) Remember, tomorrow my Fan Rpor
Night sir.
Will do, night!
Oops, that didn't come out right. What I meant was:
Right, night all :) Remember tomorrow my Fan Report SHOULD be up sometime tomorrow. But until then, catch you on the other side of July, SPC dudes! :D
Doesn't that technically mean you will be here in August?
You know what I mean, 1st of July and all that. :P
probably above what I can get away with.
£500k possibly as it's one of Senna's cars.
I wonder if Leno does his weekend shopping on that site
Other side of July means Aug... oh never mind, see ya.
Holy piquet, I didn't realise it was july tomorrow. I need to catch up with my dates
That is kind of expensive. Definitely lottery win territory
Erm.....whatever. :D
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/22123/LOLA_B2K40.html
Tempting - it'd be like an old friend. Company I worked for at the time built the chassis and we were heavily involved in testing it.
Shame it has those exhausts on the back
Is that James Weaver driving?
I can get hold of the originals reasonably easily. Won't make it trackday legal though. They limit to 105db normally. :(
When you read that as Nicky Weaver, you know it is time for bed. Remember to check out the blog and see you all tomorrow (tomorrow is easier to say)
okay, i really need to sleep off this headache. night all! x
Oh, and those dampers would have to go!
Night's
Night Lou
Just a quick Hi from seamonkey running on puppy. I made a bit of a mess trying out various linux distribution.
I tried to install flybuntu and failed. I have no idea what i did wrong unless there is some specific way to designate a partition as the second partition
*pretends to know lots about linux*
I don't know flybuntu but in ubuntu you can choose to partition manually. And then you can set-up your root partition with the mount things /; a home partition /home and the swap partition. Was it in any way like this?
Anyone know what the 22nd rule of baseball is? google doesnt
We don't talk about baseball?
Don't get caught??
Oh yes we do
Is it like fight club?
Nah, that's Ice Hockey
It is raining in new york, first mariners game i have watched in years and it gets rained off.
there is a tiny bit of irony buried in there
I have found rules on baseball but I haven't found a 22
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/foreword.jsp
they mentioned it on pti, probably an american expression
that's awesome :)
