It is Monday once more and we are thrown headlong into another week. With the extended break before Germany, though, we are not counting down to a race weekend, but rather another 'off' weekend. Still, as it is only Monday, that would be looking quite far ahead, wouldn't it? Here are some things going on at the moment:

  • Ferrari have admitted that they could very well be shifting their attention to the 2010 season, which isn't exactly a surprise given how poor they are doing at the moment. The only problem is, no one really knows what 2010 is going to be, so it's a bit early to be puting all your eggs in that basket, isn't it?
  • Apparently the continued building works at Donington are set to resume in August, which seems like an awful long time away. Now that they have all the necessary paperwork in place, and Gillett keeps saying financing shouldn't be a problem, why can't they get started now?
  • We recorded a fun Debrief yesterday with lots of feedback and Fantasy Racers stats, plus all our findings from the Shell visit at Silverstone. The live show can be replayed here, or you can tune into the podcast version here.

That'll do it for now. I'll be tuned in to the tennis all day, so if anyone else is watching, please join me in a spot of live commenting the Wimbledon action. Feel free to ignore the tennis-shaped talk if you like, though, and discuss anything that comes to mind. I'll see you in the comments.

    Helloooo *echos*

I know i said bye earlier, but i've just found the best quote in the world ever..

    By our friend Mr Gillett

"It's been a lot of hard work up until this point," said Gillett. "It has been like pushing water uphill with a fork occasionally, but the team here are fantastic and we have got clarity of vision and the support of all the right people so here we are.

    heheh

That doesn't say everything is going to happen as we planned. That sounds like something that eventually turns out to be "We're screwed"

Oh yeah, of course they're screwed, but anyone who uses the phrase "It has been likike pushing water uphill with a fork occasionally" needs a nobel prize

Watching the end of the baseball. The Mets just walked Mariano Rivera with the bases loaded. I think the Yankees may win

    They what?!?

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 03:45

    They what?!?

They have walked 11 so far and three times the Yankees have finished an inning with the bases loaded. They have only had 4 hits

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 03:47

They have walked 11 so far and three times the Yankees have finished an inning with the bases loaded. They have only had 4 hits

That was the top of the ninth. Posada started the inning with a pop up that the short stop, 2B and CF all went for then stood and looked at each other as the ball landed on the grass

Let's just say that for a team that SPENDS, spends, spends on its payroll as much as the Mets does, these things shouldn't be happening.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 03:56

I don't know much about baseball and I won't pretend to, but that sounds rather poor.

It's about as bad as you can get. Walking a pitvher who has only ever batted 3 times since he came into the league in 1996 is a bit worse though.

    Anyway. 5am. Time for bed.

From yesterday's Times, has this been brought up?

Max Mosley about-turn clears path for Jean Todt

The revelation a day later that Mosley was “considering his options” and intimating he might, after all, stand for re-election in October has left the teams nonplussed. “As far as we are concerned we have an agreement,” said one team. “We expect him to respect his side of it. If he doesn’t, then we’ll see what our options are, but at this stage we are treating what he has said as polemics. We have an agreement — to compete in F1 until the end of 2012.”

One team insider said: “Mosley wants someone to continue his work. Someone that can be manipulated by him — and we all know who that is.”

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 05:44

“As far as we are concerned we have an agreement,” said one team. “We expect him to respect his side of it..."

In other words, they'll believe it when they see it.

  • Sean Golding29/06/2009 at 05:45

In other words, they'll believe it when they see it.

Well, I guess they have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 05:53

Well, I guess they have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

I just hope that if and when Todt does get elected, he doesn't become a Max-drone. He is so much better than that. Sadly, I'm probably going to be disappointed.

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 05:56

Well, I guess they have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

FOTA seem to be quietly confident, if anything, that Max will step down (even if he'd hand over to a pro-Max guy like Todt). I wonder why - I'm really thinking there is a written agreement of some sort which they can use against Max in case he really does run.

Morning everyone. I think I have ghosts in my house or something.... I just woke up and the rotation on my computer had moved. It's really hard to move back though because the rotation of my touch pad had moved but not by the same amount as the screen. Why would that suddenly happen? :(

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 07:35

Wimbledon is back today - and we'll be treated to Federer-Soderling today. That said, Soderling hasn't looked nearly as impressive here as he did in RG.

  • Alex Andronov29/06/2009 at 07:35

I work for a coffee chain. My whole life smells of the stuff!

Ah... I see... In that case I'll have a double tripple half caf skinny whipped mocha cap or some such.

Or maybe not... I like coffee but I wouldn't want to smell it all the time.

(actually I drink Black Americanos which must be close to the easiest things to do).

Do you work for a chain coffee shop or an independant one?

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 07:48

I've handed in my notice. The general plan was to go work somewhere that gives their staff some respect.....

    Chain!!

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 07:51

    Chain!!

Those chain's are scary, one is run by the costa nostra, and i hear emperor nero has one too.

Yeah, I wouldn't like to make defamatory comments though. They've not been bad to me in the grand scheme. I'm 21 and they've let me work my way up to manager in a year. I can now go on to get a job I wouldn't have had a sniff at this time last year.

  • Fredrik Camen29/06/2009 at 07:58

    Hi!

I got the most fantastic present ever from my wife this weekend. I'm going to the race at Nürnburgring, my first live experience of F1!

I've got a question we're sitting on grandstand 10b anyone here who's been there and on that grandstand? Is there something that you really have to do when in nürnburg?

    /Fredrik

  • Alex Andronov29/06/2009 at 07:59

Yeah, I wouldn't like to make defamatory comments though. They've not been bad to me in the grand scheme. I'm 21 and they've let me work my way up to manager in a year. I can now go on to get a job I wouldn't have had a sniff at this time last year.

Well that's exactly the thing. There's always a trade off with these things. On the one hand chains give you no real power on the other chains will let you climb the ladder if you are responsible and work hard.

  • Alex Andronov29/06/2009 at 08:00

Phone in to the parade lap before the race?

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 08:02

    Someone mention coffee? :D

I like coffee. Lots of coffee. I have coffee. On my just had my 3rd double espresso today. Australian Skyberry beans - very yummy.

  • Chris_Humphreys29/06/2009 at 08:02

Has there been any changes to the Nurnburgring since 2006 as I love racing there on my playstation?

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 08:04

Well that's exactly the thing. There's always a trade off with these things. On the one hand chains give you no real power on the other chains will let you climb the ladder if you are responsible and work hard.

Not to suggest that I'm a power-hungry maniac or anything. I just think that I can't take abuse from both sides anymore. I work myself into the ground and somehow I get abuse from my area manager even though I'm running the tightest ship in the area, similarly my staff are allowed to treat me how they like and he refuses to instigate any disciplinary proceedings.

On the plus side, I know who's taking the shop on. I'm pretty sure they'll last about a week....

    From Wimbledon live blog:

1056: The warm, comforting tone of the Voice of Wimbledon informs us that the weather forecast is "very encouraging" for today. He then suggests we use "sun cream and a hat". He then suggests that anyone without a hat "pay a visit to one of our shops or kiosks, where I'm sure you'll find something of a suitable style and colour". Alright, Nicholas, you're pushing you're luck now.

  • Paul29/06/2009 at 09:59

Job Centre Website is plain awful.... Why when I've said the most important thing to me is location is it giving me jobs reading meters in Durham..... That fits NO criteria!

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 10:08

Why can't I separate retail jobs from sales?? AAAARGH!!

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 10:16

Why dont they start wimbledon an hour earlier so people dont have to choose between so many matches at once. Property programmes are really bad background viewing... they just got excited about a 5 ring burner :(

  • Alianora La Canta29/06/2009 at 10:23

    Job Centre Website is plain awful {Comment #149}

Seconded. It didn't even give me accurate information about the jobs that did fit the criteria (though to be honest, given the employer, that may not have been JobCentre's fault).

To be fair, so far I've found the employers who quietly discriminate against me for no logical reason more difficult than any element of the JobCentre itself.

  • Alianora La Canta29/06/2009 at 10:25

    Let’s just say that for a team that SPENDS, spends, spends on its payroll as much as the Mets does, these things shouldn’t be happening. {Comment #35}

You mean it's like Toyota before this year?

  • Alianora La Canta29/06/2009 at 10:29

From yesterday’s Times, has this been brought up?

    Max Mosley about-turn clears path for Jean Todt {Comment #39}

The scary thing is that it could just as easily be Alan Donnelly, who's also a Max supporter par excellance, is also likely to be biased (links with Ferrari are well-known, but ones with Manor have been uncovered in the last few days) and likely to go down like a lead balloon in the F1 paddock in the same way as Jean Todt.

    We need Nick Craw!

Shock horror - most expensive car on the grid is....

    The Brawn BGP001

Ok, it's a GMM story, but it certainly seems that for once it's not a complete pile of pants.

    5 wind tunnels

    3 car designs

    €500'000'000 budget.

If Force India had those facilities I'd expect them to be at the pointy end...

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 10:40

Ok, it's a GMM story, but it certainly seems that for once it's not a complete pile of pants.

    I read that earlier...

Whilst using the windtunnels in 3 different counties wasnt news, i did wonder why GMM didnt mention anything about unicorns.

It makes honda's departure look a bit different, clearly it was a massive department, and clearly leaving when they did was extremely strange.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 10:40

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 10:47

The 3 different car designs was to me.

That was a bit, but yo wonder how normal that is, especialy if you have multiple teams working on a car, each trying out different concepts in different asreas, and in this case different wind tunnels!

Thinking about this, could a team build separate cars for low speed street circuits, and for high speed ones if they wanted?

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 10:50

Thinking about this, could a team build separate cars for low speed street circuits, and for high speed ones if they wanted?

If they had a money tree? Yeah I'm sure they could. I'm not sure in a practical sense it'd be that effective though in that your R&D efforts might become too fragmented.

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 10:51

Thinking about this, could a team build separate cars for low speed street circuits, and for high speed ones if they wanted?

Been done before. McLaren and Ferrari have certainly done it. Significantly different wheelbases depending on the track layout.

IIRC the McLaren has something in the region of 1ft difference.

Several years ago they used to have cars just for qualifying. Engines designed to do 3 laps at a time. No radiators, different wings and floors. Only thing that survived between Qualifying and the race was the tub, seat and steering system.

5 wind tunnels? Teams are only allowed one!

It also means that Force India, which I believe is on a $120m (€85,403,158.66) budget, is operating on 17.08% of Brawn's budget...

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 11:13

Or even the US-based windtunnel (owned by that guy who's now helping out with USF1)

To be honest, it's just my kitchen I've got left to do. Everything else is boxed up in my spare room! I might leave my kitchen stuff, I mean I've got to live here another 4 days.... It's hiking everything to the car by myself that I really can't be bothered with.... There are double yellow outside my house with very overzealous parking wardens so it might be a bit of a distance to go!

"Watch this space because I'm going to be in Hungary for the first time this year. The reason I used to miss it was because it was during the school holidays and it was the one chance I had to go on holiday to my villa in Spain with the kids. By Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls on the band's 1992 album Rites of Passage (a solo performance).

By Cliff Eberhardt on his 1995 album Mona Lisa Café.

By Michael Braunfeld on his 1997 album Steel City.

By Edwin McCain on his 2003 album The Austin Sessions.

By Monte Montgomery on his 2003 live album New & Approved.

Regarding the Benettons - I don't recognise the drivers I'm afraid, one is a woman.

Rich folk preparing their toys for Goodwood I think!

Nothing much happening at the moment, Schueys B193 (I think), has a flat battery. It is also shod with wet weather tyres which seems a little odd given that you could fry eggs on the runway right now...

There was a woman driver in the pit stop feature that the BBC did on the weekend. Or rather there was a woman in the suit and helmet, I'm guessing there wasn't that much actual driving going on in the studio.

    Question: (might need Steven Roy)

Are there any circuits which operate their tracks in both directions?

Apart from in different configurations like indy e.t.c..

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 14:43

    DONE!

  • Journeyer29/06/2009 at 14:43

Are there any circuits which operate their tracks in both directions?

That is a VERY good question! Haven't heard of any, TBH. The closest that I know is Singapore - although it was originally designed to run clockwise, it has only run counter-clockwise.

They made significant changes to the course layout, which may have changed the rhythm of the track. Lemme see if I can find a page describing it...

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 14:51

Anyone else heard the rumours about a former team boss being put forward for FIA President?

I've heard 2 differing ones. One is the expected Jean Toad - Mosley Puppet Party

The other is Ron Dennis on the FOTA the FIA Party.

I'd prefer Dennis over Toad, but Stoddy over both!

hehe, it did actualy turn out to be a reall good buy.

I was backpacing around the world, back then mp3 capacity wasnt really that great..

I think we were in Thailand, and it proved a really cheap way of buying music, we didnt have to worry about cds being scratched, and more importantly it didn't jump whilst on bumpy journeys.

It also survived falling off a rickshaw, and being full of sand. If i went backpacking again, i would be very tempted to repeat it. you really don't have to worry about it being stolen either!

My first MP3 player was a present - only played 128kbps mp3's and I went back to tapes after that. Was probably around 98/99

128kbps was/is not CD quality by any stretch of the imagination.

Minidisc was just as bad as MP3's at that point.

Then the high capacity minidiscs came out aroudn the same time as proper mp3 players. My first proper MP3 player was the iRiver iHP-100, later the iHP-140 - still have it and use it now as it has optical input and output.

:) Sounds like a plan... A pint could be easily do-able at some point this week or next any week better?

am on earlies this week so is better. Have two arrangements to firm up. Is Friday out? Could get kat to join us later if you fancy

that's very fetching two-piece. Probably the last time you were in public without a collared shirt on I'd imagine ;)

Very true... I was casually listening to my walkman... However when it came to working on my Mac I had switched back to the collared shirt:

Yup - If enough people are interested, we can set it up so that you can go to Sepang the weekend before or after Manila. Amy is going there next year (I think). If you have the cash for it, why not?

I don't know in context you speak. They had more people in the stands than Istambul, but it was follow the leader to the cautions, which were numerous. It wasn't a bad race. They return to road courses this weekend

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 17:34

I will say I can doom any driver to life of mediocrity. I tuned to the NASCAR race to see how Scott Speed was doing, made it up to 19th, the next shot he's backward into the wall. Kimi, 2005 enough said. 2006 the car was junk. 2007 a bright spot and he's back where I, as a fan have doomed him

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 17:38

The road courses are pretty boring, the cars are detuned to 650 HP or so and they are just look slow on a road course. But the cars are tanks. One guy hit another guy in the rear, lifted him off the ground and did slight nose wing damage, really didn't need to replace it.

    Evening

Ah i only caught the end of something on ESPN, probably more overtakes than an F! race, but ovals spoil you for that

It was a short oval and there was not a lot of overtaking. To me it looked like the same problem we have on a lot of F1 tracks. The cars are too big and too fast for the track. When you get to that situation overtaking a car unless you have a huge advantage is rarely going to happen.

What was facinating though was watching the live stream on indycar.com. FREE Bernie FREE. You had the choice of five cameras including onboards with only engine noise and you could select telemetry from one to 5 drivers. THe TV director was lacking something but as a FREE package offered by the championship I thought it was superb and I will definitely tune into it again.

It's been nothing but blue skies throughout today. Rather humid too, but there's been one or two nice breezes blowing through. That's what we have to make do with in the office since there's no air con.

Indycar does "get it". But Tony George has done his share of screw ups. There is very good access, in St. Pete for an extra $60 I had paddock passes and got up and close to the cars and haulers and you see lots of drivers. Almost stepped on a little child, then I realized it was Danica Patrick

    Question: (might need Steven Roy)

Are there any circuits which operate their tracks in both directions?

Indycar has never had that, Champcar did. It alternated from a push to pass to a push to defend button. It wasn't the cure-all. Indycar needs a chassis that is not butt-ugly, for one thing. Open the series up to better cars.

  • Amy29/06/2009 at 17:49

    go Stannnnnnn

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 17:50

f1 drivers don't usually feel the need to apologise for the rubbish racing, though do they?

Different standards. I have watched many F1 races which were less entertaining than that one was. F1 drivers have no concept of entertainment in races. Lewis and Kimi may have done the odd donut after the race but it is a safe bet either of them ever thought about whether a race was entertaining for the fans.

  • me29/06/2009 at 17:50

I didn't know about that. I'll go to Speedtv.com and read Robin Miller's column, he's a huge Indycar guy, but is also very critcal of the sport at times

read about it on pressdog's live blog:

"Glad I didn't pay to see it. Graham is P3. Talking to him. I lost interest long ago. Not sure how driving in an ARCA race anywhere would be less appealing for Danica than participating in this mess. I'm out of here."

  • me29/06/2009 at 17:51

The drivers say they can't get close enough to overtake. So with a power boost I'm thinking they can?

won't it be exactly the same as kers? used defensively?

  • me29/06/2009 at 17:51

Lewis and Kimi may have done the odd donut after the race but it is a safe bet either of them ever thought about whether a race was entertaining for the fans.

    fair point.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 17:52

Apparently solutions are already being talked about including power boost buttons and better tyres.

NO!. They just need more drag on th cars so that following cars can clingshot past them. Why is it that so many people in racing can't get it into their heads that aerodynamics is always the problem. The reason they are so fast in the first place is downforce.

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 17:52

The drivers say they can't get close enough to overtake. So with a power boost I'm thinking they can?

    Pretty much.

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 17:56

Is Richmond's oval bigger than the one at bristol? does the Irl go to BMS?

No but that would be insane. Remember about 10 yrs ago Champcar had to cancel the race in Texas because the cars were too fast and inducing vertigo on the drivers, Bristol would probably be worse

  • Amy29/06/2009 at 17:57

    A double break this early!!

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 17:57

Are there any circuits which operate their tracks in both directions?

Interesting. None that I can think of in recent years. I know either Knockhill or Ingliston in Scotland ran in revers once in the 1980s. The theory was that it gave the drivers some variety without requirning a different set up. Strangely it didn't actually occur to anyone until they ran the cars that the same circuit in the opposite direction is really a different circuit and needs a different set up.

I have experience once of running a circuit in reverse. There is a very good indoor karting track at Cambuslang near Glasgow which is in an old warehouse and before the roof got fixed it could get wuite wet inside. Some genius decided that itt was saer in the wet to run n the reverse direction. I have no idea what logic arrived at that conclusion. I only know that is the only time I have smashed my head off a pillar in a kart.

It was okay, nothing more than a gimmick though - in the sense that the passing increased a bit but you always knew it was because of the button.

I've never seen it tried on an oval and I can't see how it would be a good idea on one.

i have one of them. but i've no idea how tall the guy holding it is?

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 18:13

It was okay, nothing more than a gimmick though - in the sense that the passing increased a bit but you always knew it was because of the button.

I've never seen it tried on an oval and I can't see how it would be a good idea on one.

I figure most would be through their allotment of boost by about the 4th lap. I think it was 60 sec. for a race

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 18:14

Different standards. I have watched many F1 races which were less entertaining than that one was. F1 drivers have no concept of entertainment in races. Lewis and Kimi may have done the odd donut after the race but it is a safe bet either of them ever thought about whether a race was entertaining for the fans.

Exactly. Richmond and Texas before it are usually very exciting races, lots of passing. From what I've heard, they were one-line racetracks this year.

    Hey Lukeh.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 18:17

You must be able to tell whether he is particularly small or tall or if he is about average. At least we should be able to get a range from it.

  • Joe in Fla29/06/2009 at 18:17

I'm guess it's not standard, just so they guy does'nt get hit by the car as it leaves

  • Amy29/06/2009 at 18:18

You must be able to tell whether he is particularly small or tall or if he is about average. At least we should be able to get a range from it.

This reminds me a lot of high school maths and dudes standing by trees and how tall is the tree if he is x metres away

  • Amy29/06/2009 at 18:20

    Night Amy.

    Oh, hi Lukeh.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 18:21

So it looke like 6 or 7 feet. We know the car is 1.8 metres wide so the bit over the car is about a metre-ish and the other end only needs to be long enough for the guy holding it to be able to see up the pitlane for oncoming traffic and to give him a long enough piece to gold so that the leverage isn't to much for him to comfortably hold it.

So if you build a car and get ewnough people round it to simulate a pit stop it should be easy to work out the ideal length of a lollipop. Or you could just phone one of the teams and ask.

  • Jon Waldock29/06/2009 at 18:22

now... i refuse to offer any more help/advice until you tell us why?

ok...well i dont need anymore help anyway ;) but i will tell you why.

baasically, our church car park is smaller than the amount of people that come to the church when we let people park themselves, so we now have parking attendants who make sure everyones parking properly, and in the right order if they want to leave early (near the exit) or later (far from the exit) in case we have to double park people....anywho, its quite a mundane job and so yesterday we decided to spice it up by getting table tennis bats and directing the cars as if they were aeroplanes (like the little man standing in front of the big planes with the red bat thing)

annnnywho, everyone loved it, so i've decided to have some fun with it, and make an F1 style lollypop to stop cars etc etc.

    make sense?

it's just my way of making a mundane job, more fun. :D

  • Jon Waldock29/06/2009 at 18:28

    What if none of the wind tunnels were owned by the team? All owned by the parent company perhaps? {Comment #163}

The ownership of a tunnel is of no interest to the FIA - it regulates based on usage. If a team is entered into the championship, it can only use one tunnel total. There is an issue of timing, though. If the other four tunnels were involved early enough, they could have got round the rule.

Repeating the feat is, however, impossible for the foreseeable future.

    f1 drivers don’t usually feel the need to apologise for the rubbish racing, though do they? {Comment #403}

If they did the FIA could punish their teams under the Concorde Agreement for statements that make F1 look bad (this is aside from the more generic provision in Article 151c of the Sporting Agreement, preventing any act prejudicial to F1's interests). I doubt Max could be convinced that honesty is a good trait in a driver and a series.

That is a VERY good question! Haven't heard of any, TBH. The closest that I know is Singapore - although it was originally designed to run clockwise, it has only run counter-clockwise.

It is the perfect example of why tracks should only run in one direction. Now the pit entry and exit are a disaster because they were never designed with that purpose in mind.

It would be way too expensive to build in the safety to run in both directions. You would need run offs in both directions. Marshals posts would probably need to be in different positions. Brake markersm start lights etc all have to be re-done. it is not just a matter of telling the drivers to go the other way.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 20:05

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 20:07

It would be way too expensive to build in the safety to run in both directions. You would need run offs in both directions. Marshals posts would probably need to be in different positions. Brake markersm start lights etc all have to be re-done. it is not just a matter of telling the drivers to go the other way.

Thanks i figurered as much, but it might be interesting if it was designed in from the start

i (heart) tennis. have never known christine to be so quiet.

Quiet. How can you stay quiet when there is a Brit playing?

there are some comments that should maybe stay inside your head ;) unless you find the naughty step particularly comfortable?

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 20:09

Oh, you wanted to watch The Supersizers. Gotcha.

Won't they repeat it on another night?

The repeat is normally on Sunday - tennis is on in it's place.....

    Joy of joys...

I was feeling bad for you but if that was what you're missing, I don't anymore... Dieting programmes??

No - not a dieting program... well kind of. 2 people eat the food and essentially live the live of various periods of time. They've doen the 45's, 80's, Elizabethan, victorian and all sorts of other ones.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 20:09

This was in the early days when it was a motorcycle dirt track on roughly what is now the Indy circuit.

I was imagining Paddock th other way followed by a down hill straight into Clearways. That could be very messy.

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 20:09

It would be way too expensive to build in the safety to run in both directions.

You're spoiling my big idea - run half the race one way and the other half the other. ;)

Incidentally move successful, remote control found!!

Nothing else matters if you have the remote

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 20:11

Even numbered cars in one direction and odd numbered cars the other. No more borig races.

Yup. Sue Perkins is great. For a veggie, she eats all sorts of weird animals for the sake of our amusement. :D

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 20:12

    ???

I mentioned that I think all the tracks should be reversible. The next logical step is to run the race both ways round the tracks. That way the drivers will be able to keep their neck muscles symmetrical

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 20:12

    ooops.

Dont look now, but i think you've got away with it...

Blooming health and safety again. Bah.

Seriously, it makes a lot of sense to keep the tracks one way - stops any confusion. Imiagine if they did this in NASCAR - turn left, turn left, turn left would suddenly become turn right, turn right, turn right. None of the drivers would be able to cope.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 20:14

That line judge lady that got smacked with the ball really looks like a pig....

Harsh!, but she could really do with bigger glasses

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 20:16

That line judge lady that got smacked with the ball really looks like a pig....

How did she make it onto centre court then? (There's an article in the Mail* today that shows that the less attractive players get to play on the lesser courts only)

I'm behind on so many series:

-Havent seen any of last year's Superleague Formula

-Haven't seen the last two rounds of A1GP

    -Havent seen any F2

-Havent seen any more than round one of BTCC

-Havent seen more than two rounds of Indy

-Havent seen MotoGP from Assen yet!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 20:26

I'm behind on so many series:

Oh I'm MUCH further behind than you :-)

    - IndyCar - only seen St Pete and Indy (and my blog is supposed to be biased to F1 and IRL).

    - Haven't see the last 3 rounds of A1GP.

    - Haven't seen any GP2.

    - Haven't seen any F2 other than Valencia Race 1 which we live commented.

    - Not seen any MotoGP other than Assen (just 'cos it was on and I wasn't at home).

    - BTCC I've only seen Brands Hatch. WTCC and DTM nothing at all.

I'm realising how much more free time I had last year, trying to run the same commitments this year just isn't working!!

For tennis generally I would agree, particularly back when I had Eurotennis (sorry, Eurosport) and they'd pre-empt live touring cars for it.. but I can live with Wimbledon. It is only a couple of weeks per year and it helps me catch up with other stuff.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 20:31

something tells me i need to read back through the comments...

  • Jon Waldock29/06/2009 at 20:39

    What's that for?

"our church car park is smaller than the amount of people that come to the church when we let people park themselves, so we now have parking attendants who make sure everyones parking properly, and in the right order if they want to leave early (near the exit) or later (far from the exit) in case we have to double park people….anywho, its quite a mundane job and so yesterday we decided to spice it up by getting table tennis bats and directing the cars as if they were aeroplanes (like the little man standing in front of the big planes with the red bat thing)

annnnywho, everyone loved it, so i’ve decided to have some fun with it, and make an F1 style lollypop to stop cars etc etc."

They don't want to give you money back on bottles they can't reuse. As I said, our bottles are thinner and pretty rubbish. Bottles you get on the continent are much more sturdy and obviously designed for reuse.

They don't recycle them, they clean them and refill.

It's the same with German bottles though - when you buy them you sign a form stating that you won't claim any recycling money on them - thus you get them cheaper.

I think it's for tax reasons more than anything...

    Another first!

Is that a first in British television history?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 21:02

    Lol, they're delaying the news.....

    Another first!

Really? Most countries cut to the news and delay the rest of the event...

How much longer can it go on for before they take a pause until tomorrow?

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast29/06/2009 at 21:02

    Another first!

When I was young[er], I think during Brazil 03, they delayed Cornation Street and I thought that was the end of the tv world.

  • Jon Waldock29/06/2009 at 21:02

It's the same with German bottles though - when you buy them you sign a form stating that you won't claim any recycling money on them - thus you get them cheaper.

so every time you buy a bottle, you have to sign a form?

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 21:02

Is that a first in British television history?

I'm sure I've seen it happen before for sports.... Football in particular many times I'm sure!!

    Never for Wimbledon though obviously

  • Scott Woodwiss29/06/2009 at 21:03

When I was young[er], I think during Brazil 03, they delayed Cornation Street and I thought that was the end of the tv world.

Pfft, they did it all the time...

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast29/06/2009 at 21:03

How much longer can it go on for before they take a pause until tomorrow?

Could go on forever, maybe until one of the bulbs go out.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast29/06/2009 at 21:03

Pfft, they did it all the time...

Hey, I was young, that was like my third F1 race and I thought Corniation Street had to be on time all the time.

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 21:03

The commentators were saying "up to 10pm" earlier but that doesn't seem to have happened...

Every time I go to Germany and buy a boot full of Moonshine, yes ;)

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 21:04

I don't think so. Besides' it's only fair, they kept interrupting a John Wayne film I was watching back in May 1980.

Hey, I was young, that was like my third F1 race and I thought Corniation Street had to be on time all the time.

I do believe they only did it for the "late" races in Europe, which were Brazil, Canada and US GP.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/06/2009 at 21:05

    i'm on it...

In NZ, after about a total of half an hour of adverts, they cut the movie in two for either Lotto or the News :(

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 21:05

Most of the time the money you're getting back for the recycled bottles is just your deposit you paid when you bought it. You pay more at the outset for it.

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 21:05

    Has he lost yet?

Gone to fifth set. No tiebreaks in the last set at Wimbledon either.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast29/06/2009 at 21:06

He will not lose at Wimbledon this year.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 21:08

In NZ, after about a total of half an hour of adverts, they cut the movie in two for either Lotto or the News :(

I remember in dubai in the early 90's there was only 1 english language channel available, they were showing a film, cut to the news, then went off air for the night.

    I think i was 6 or 7 and i was very upset...

I remember that! 13.2 million people saw the end of that race, making it the most-seen part of any F1 race on British television since 2000 - which was a bit of a problem. The Coronation Street viewers would have been excused for thinking that their favourite soap was doing a special edition in the Highlands, given the farce at the end...

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 21:34

Don't mess this up andy you damned... thing.

What must I not mess up?

Only if he loses. That's the law - British when winning, Scottish when crashing out on the first lap.

    tennis has crashes?

No but I said something about it on F1NGers a few months back.

Whenever someone loses at tennis they always "Crash Out" according to the headlines.

    NO. He didn't crash out.

He tried to hit a ball with a stick and he missed.

  • Jon Waldock29/06/2009 at 21:35

    Did you see Haas/Llodra?

oooh yes. that was so cool, i loved that the ball boys/girls played :) it made me happy

No. It is starting to age already. It is now predictable and there were complaints about aspects of it here on Sunday night which has never happened before.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 21:50

It's really predictable. I know their races are staged to be close, but the way they shoot them, you can tell who's "won" from about 10 mins before the end. They always collapse into the bar to find the other one in there with the pint....

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 21:52

    I do not approve.

Even if they were painted like that to celebrate the birth of a panda in the zoo?

the problems began for me, when they realised they didn't have enough new guests for the "reasonably priced car" bit. so they bought a different car and invited the same guests back again.

if ever there was a time to think up a new challenge...

Get through the guests twice as quickly.... That was two weeks worth of rivalry wasted all at once. The last episode of Top Gear I watched was when they went to the North Pole. I'm not the person to talk about this really.

lemmie guess... they picked on james, because he insisted on reading the map. and then they hid the little one's chariot?

Painted offensive words on it perhaps? Put something foul smelling in James' car?

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:03

I hadn't really noticed that tbh! But now you mention it....

They did change the rules as well. Liana laps were recorded as the fastest driven by the "star". Lacetti laps are 5 practice laps and then one timed one. This accounts for the relatively poor performances by Steve Coogan and Jimmy Carr compared to their Liana laps.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 22:03

    James got off very lightly.

    Clarkson got them lost

They all had to bike 1000 miles across Vietnam - so Clarkson was really unhappy with that. :D

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 22:04

I know they must have strutted around wearing a US flag at some point.... How could they resist that one. Then probably made fun of the fact that Hammond was the right height to live there....

thing is. from that description, i can imagine the whole show in my head.

what's the pointing in wasting an hour watching?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 22:06

I should write this stuff. I could be rich.

No need to do that, just tell the danes about fish and chips

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:06

I know they must have strutted around wearing a US flag at some point.... How could they resist that one. Then probably made fun of the fact that Hammond was the right height to live there....

The "forfeit" bike (if their own one broke down completely) was a Harley Davidson painted with stars and stripes and a flag plus a loudspeaker blaring out "Born in the USA"

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 22:06

I know they must have strutted around wearing a US flag at some point.... How could they resist that one.

Their bikes kept breaking down, so they had a backup bike for the next person to break down irrepairably.

American style chopper, painted in the stars and stripes with the stereo blaring out Born in the USA.

Then probably made fun of the fact that Hammond was the right height to live there....

    More his eating habits.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:06

what's the pointing in wasting an hour watching?

    Sunday Night Hangover Recovery

    :D

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:07

what's the pointing in wasting an hour watching?

You get to see Clarkson falling off a motorbike.

  • lou29/06/2009 at 22:07

what's the pointing in wasting an hour watching?

the cinematography is amazing, and although predictable at times it's still pretty funny and a nice thing to watch on a sunday evening (besides the debrief of course). plus where else do you get to see amazing super cars on track and in random very lovely places?

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:07

    beetle-esque.

Except the Beetle is the best car to drive across Africa. Not that I'm biased in any way...

  • Lukeh29/06/2009 at 22:07

Christine, I know you've no doubt been wondering but did you realise just how much you missed out on f1 before you started watching, when we had no politics but rather.... something else??

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/forten-jpg

I think it was just bad timing myself :P

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 22:08

That would be good for MotoGP... can they hang one leg out when balancing like Rossi does during braking?

Hmm, this I am not sure about.

How does a Panda look in a fireproof suit and helmet? Could their feet operate a gear lever selector?

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:08

    the cinematography is amazing

and every car advertisement made in he past 3 years has copied that style lock, stock and barrel.

That was worth the hour on it's own. :D

Vietnam was an hour and 15minutes I think...

and every car advertisement made in he past 3 years has copied that style lock, stock and barrel.

It's so easy to do, just put a graduated filter in front of the lens. The Vietnam film was good, the African and Polar adventures are better.

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 22:10

and every car advertisement made in he past 3 years has copied that style lock, stock and barrel.

I don't watch it as a car show - because, well it isn't.

It's entertainment now rather than factual.

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 22:10

True, but they do go to some amazing backdrops.

Not if I'm threatening to rehash tired jokes that could be on Top Gear. I don't think Christine wants to hear that....

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 22:11

Thanks Andy - The Polar one was a standalone so I never caught it... Not sure if it was on NZ TV...

The point is there is a lot of good stuff in there but it needs a shake up again. Top Gear has changed repeatedly over its lige and it is time to take the juvenils stuff out of it now and that means Clarkson as to go.

  • lou29/06/2009 at 22:12

It's entertainment now rather than factual.

i don't watch it for facts... i can look those up on the internet :D

Christine, I know you've no doubt been wondering but did you realise just how much you missed out on f1 before you started watching, when we had no politics but rather.... something else??

    No politics. When? 1920s?

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:13

i don't watch it for facts... i can look those up on the internet :D

5th Gear is for facts and Top Gear is for a laugh.

Result: 5G is dry and boring. TG is fun.

Even if Clarkson likes to play up his stereotypes and people take him literally..

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 22:13

Thanks Andy - The Polar one was a standalone so I never caught it... Not sure if it was on NZ TV...

Borrowed it on Bluray - looked absolutely superb. BBC certainly know how to produce stuffin HD.

Id give them ne last season after this one... then rest the show for 3 years and brink it back with a different look and new presenters

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 22:14

that would certainly help. the script writers need ditching too.

Seeing as one of those is Richard Porter of Evo, Sniff Petrol and Gareth Jones On Speed I think he can stay :)

  • Lukeh29/06/2009 at 22:14

    No politics. When? 1920s?

Yep that picture was infact in some kind of paradox taken in the 1920s when the grass was green and the cars were pretty. Oh won't you please take me home :(

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:14

Seeing as one of those is Richard Porter of Evo, Sniff Petrol and Gareth Jones On Speed I think he can stay :)

You do remember what happened the last time they got rid of Clarkson?

Top gear stopped shortly afterwards as no-one watched it.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:14

Speaking of people who need a blog Steven... ;)

I have no opinions on nuffing

5th Gear is for facts and Top Gear is for a laugh.

Result: 5G is dry and boring. TG is fun.

Even if Clarkson likes to play up his stereotypes and people take him literally..

The problem isn't that people take him seriously.... It'd almost be bearable if he meant what he was saying, but he's just like an attention seeking kid playing up for laughs....

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:16

that would certainly help. the script writers need ditching too.

Getting rid of Clarkson would free up the script writers. So long as you have someone like him who has to be seen as superior the show is predictable.

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 22:16

the problem also is... it's the same laughs.

That never did Dad's Army or 'Allo, 'Allo any harm. That's what Top Gear has become - a Sit-Com. It's the modern equivalent of Till Death Do Us Part with Clarkson as the Alf Garnett character.

I've downloaded a few older podcasts to give it a chance, haven't started yet though. I get the feeling I might not stay with it long but we'll see.

I don't get Evo because I don't see the point and Sniff these days is just a lot of recycled in-jokes (it could be a LOT better if he had the time for it).

TV is crap these days innnit. Most stuff worth watching is available on the net anyways. Every time I try and get into a program I just get bored of it.

I can't believe how many channels you guys in the UK have on Sky - how do you find something to watch? You'd end up always checking the other channels just to make sure you're not missing something better!

Do you guys have unlimited bandwidth in the UK?

i certainly don't :( all of a sudden these last few weeks i've not had much bandwidth at all... streaming iplayer video has been useless. :( i need to ring orange when i get the chance cause it's just a little bit stupid...

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:27

i don't, no. christine did look at 4od the other day, but i've no idea what the conclusion was?

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:33

Don't remind me of this! Now I'm gonna spend my night watching Father Ted....

I sat and watched every episode of Green Wing over about three nights. A couple of months ago they put up another 4000 hours of stuff including every episode of Drop the Dead Donkey. I am tempted to watch that but it may be one of those things that was fabulous in its day but because it was so topical it is not funny now.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:33

that's what i thought. as are most in the uk, right?

  • Scott Woodwiss29/06/2009 at 22:33

You could effectively stream all 5 terrestrial channels at once on your laptop, that way you don't effectively miss anything! :D

    Yay Green Wing!

Apart from Dave, Sky One, Virgin One, Eurosport, CBBC, Cbeebies, etc.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:34

that has some appeal. i recall christine saying it worked on the mac too. may check it out later.

You can now watch it in the browser which you couldn't before. I haven't been near it recently but the menus and search needed a massive overhaul the last time I looked.

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 22:34

    Mine certainly is

380gb last time we talked - and he hasn't been throttled yet.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:35

I sat and watched every episode of Green Wing over about three nights

i'd be more likely to buy that on itunes, just so i could watch on the ipod touch when convenient.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:35

380gb last time we talked - and he hasn't been throttled yet.

so no limit at all then?

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:35

Your internet won't let you stream video? I'd go mental.... I often watch a few things at once.

I had IRL and baseball on at the same time on Saturday night as well as a few other things like doohickey etc

Seems ok. I'm only up to 22gb so far...

    Orange isn't unlimited.

Mine is unlimited. Absolutely and totally without limit.

that's basically what we've been doing with C4 programmes until now.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:36

i'd be more likely to buy that on itunes, just so i could watch on the ipod touch when convenient.

I don't understand that at all... If I wanted to watch something I'd watch it on a telly. That's why I've got an S-VIDEO cable running from my gfx card to my telly.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:37

Mine is unlimited. Absolutely and totally without limit.

as i hope is ours. otherwise no live show!

I don't understand that at all... If I wanted to watch something I'd watch it on a telly. That's why I've got an S-VIDEO cable running from my gfx card to my telly.

    a) you don't get to choose when it's on.

    b) you can't watch it on the move.

    c) you can't pause it to get beer.

    d) you have to watch the adverts.

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:38

See the court case over it - it's not unlimited.

    Fair use terms apply.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:39

Commenting remains on the PC monitor.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:40

my monitor is as well, but it is smaller than the tv. if I don't want to comment on anything I'll use the monitor.

How can you live comment with a telly though? I don't understand - where do you plug in the keyboard?

You can use a ps3 i think... hang on a miniute

So why not run split screen like you did for Sebring?

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:41

They've added a little bit of text to the internet homepage... it's quite important.

    that's just being picky.

in answer to paul's question, none of our broadband connections are limited, right?

you've never hit a limit, we've never hit a limit, your friend has downloaded the entire internet twice and still never hit a limit.

we have unlimited broadband... in the spirit of the rules at least ;)

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:41

See the court case over it - it's not unlimited.

I am on the internet for hours every day and watch a lot of video. Some times 2 or three sporting events running at the same time and never had any kind of problem.

    Orange do two separate packages.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:41

So why not run split screen like you did for Sebring?

I am! The TV is set up as the second monitor, that's how I had it for Sebring.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:42

my monitor is as well, but it is smaller than the tv. if I don't want to comment on anything I'll use the monitor.

you probably just need a bigger monitor. then you can ditch your tv too.

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 22:42

in answer to paul's question, none of our broadband connections are limited, right?

Many companies do have strict and set limits though! It's just that none of us are daft enough to go for them....

what I want is a second monitor. then I can ditch the tv

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 22:42

Mine is unlimited. Absolutely and totally without limit.

    Taken direct from their FUP.

    Fair Use Policy

By accepting our Terms and Conditions, you agree to be bound by this policy. Please see below the terms relating to the relevant service you have subscribed for.

    Home Broadband

    Why have one?

Well it's designed to make sure your broadband service is fast and reliable whenever you use it.

Some of our broadband customers use file sharing software and download large files like music and videos. This uses up lots of network capacity leaving less available for you. If they're doing this at peak times, it could mean that the speed of your broadband service will be affected.

Am I likely to be affected by the Fair Use Policy?

If you don't use file sharing software or download large files from the Internet it's unlikely you'll ever be affected by this policy. If you do, all we ask is that you do so considerately, perhaps by downloading outside the peak hours of 6pm to midnight. Don’t forget that media streaming, including the streaming of internet radio using devices such as Orange’s own Liveradio, contributes to your use of bandwidth and may, if left permanently on, cause you to be in breach of this policy.

What will happen if my use is very high?

If you only occasionally have very high usage, we're unlikely to be concerned. If it is happening regularly, we may either have to reduce the transmission speed of your broadband while we continue to keep an eye on your usage, or suspend your service and/or possibly close your account.

We don't want to do that, and with your support and goodwill we'll work with you to see if we can avoid this happening.

    Does that sound unlimited?

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:42

Many companies do have strict and set limits though! It's just that none of us are daft enough to go for them....

they must be really cheap ones?

  • Andy Taylor29/06/2009 at 22:42

I wish no one had mentioned 4OD now.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:43

you just said that you have never hit the limit?

    true of false?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/06/2009 at 22:43

The 24" seems large enough for Doohickey and another 4x3 browser window/video window...

Sorry - that whole post wasn't meant to be in bold...

I have no idea what happened there. :D

It's the penultimate paragraph that was meant to be emboldened.

    Thats the FUP for Orange.

I hit the limit for Eclipse for about 3 straight months, which is why I've gone to Be

  • Steven Roy29/06/2009 at 22:45

    Does that sound unlimited?

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:45

Gosh, I may have started an argument. ;-)

    oops

nah. i totally see flibsters point. but nothing in life is unlimited. for any normal person, the uk essentially has unlimited broadband.

sadly we don't have fast broadband. you have to go to finland for that.

  • lou29/06/2009 at 22:45

    Does that sound unlimited?

*runs away quickly from technical conversation she does not fully understand *

  • Alison29/06/2009 at 22:46

    Does that sound unlimited?

It's also not very specific.... It's just saying don't take the absolute michael and we can all leave each other be. It even tells you you're allowed to do illegal things as long as it's not between 6 and 12. Plus I think that's on about leaving streaming going then falling asleep, for a month, and the like....

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 22:46

When I was on a lower package with BT (waits for sniggers from techies)... they charged me money for going over the limit, instead of throttling the speed. After a few months they said they might cut me off, so I upgraded.

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:46

*runs away quickly from technical conversation she does not fully understand *

It's pretty simple really, the more you use your Internet connection, the closer you get to your monthly bandwidth limit. Some ISPs have higher limits than others. My ISP chooses to make their limit very high indeed.

Meanwhile, the word Unlimited is being redefined.

Don't buy one as a telly - the lamps typically last for 2-3000 hours when your TV typically lasts from 8-12000 hours... a very expensive idea!

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:53

No, the word computer was removed from the company name.

    oooops!

you work for a technical lifestyle company?

Yup, you can get it off the Wii Shop. It costs though.

Not if you got it before June 2007 iirc - it was beta and free.

I wasn't having a go, I'm just saying that if the conversation wasn't followed up to that point using the same words to repeat it probably isn't the way to go ;)

You can get a kit that connects it with a cable. Some games and channels etc require internet access to get the most out of them so I reccomend it...

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 22:56

Hulu ended its ps3 compatibility the other day, apparently the networks didnt like the competition

  • me29/06/2009 at 22:56

    it does. :D

I ditched the wireless connection as it was unreliable. Just got a usb/ethernet adaptor cheap that works great.

Also - with the latest firmware - usb keyboards work in the wii too. ;)

The wireless on the Wii is terrible. I've just tried to connect and it can't find it, go to re-input my key, I think.

  • lou29/06/2009 at 22:58

    1) Invite some friends over

    2) Get drunk

    3) Play Wii

It's awesome! I recommend Hula hoops on Wii Fit and the Tennis of COurse ;)

Speaking of which, are we all about ready to look at a Mario Kart Wii tourney again?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 22:59

Im just updating my firmware It might improve the browser, i will give it another go when its done :D

Its still a no go, but its nice to know the mobile version is there in in an emergancy

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 23:00

The wireless on the Wii is terrible. I've just tried to connect and it can't find it, go to re-input my key, I think.

Sometimes leaving the Wii on for a few minutes allows it to wake up and connect...

    ???

sssshhhh!!! it's going to be a warm summer... i don't want to be purely white/ looking like i've never seen the sun, as usual...

    CRT Tan! :D

When is that for all you guys with exams etc? That's what I've been waiting for...

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:02

    1) Invite some friends over

    2) Get drunk

    3) Play Wii

I dont trust my friends to mix wii + drunkeneess here... far too much valuable furniture!!!

Not to mention my downstairs neighbours object to me sneezing let alone rioting!

  • lou29/06/2009 at 23:02

When is that for all you guys with exams etc? That's what I've been waiting for...

my last day of term is Sat 11th July. i've finished my exams, but still have school. how unfair.

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 23:03

I thought you were from Norfolk, not Scotland.

I lived surrounded by fields and suffered badly with heyfever.

Luckilly I had a Spectrum, C16, C64, Amiga(s) and many other toys to keep me occupied.

OK well we should look at Mid-July then with maybe some warm-ups before then? I'll update the Wiki soon asking what days and times would be good?

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:09

No Surrey, not too far from Mclaren.

In Dubai the cars had to be worth over 300K

  • Paul29/06/2009 at 23:09

We had a network of BBCs at school, if you can believe that. "we" ran the network because the teachers couldn't work them out.

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 23:09

    yay! and boo!

I've been a bit busy to use it :-)

btw, I was checking my router settings. it claims the line speed is 54Mbps! I never get anything remotely near that, but when the browsing is dodgy the BT Vision IPTV works. Except when it doesn't.

54mbps is the wireless connection speed - won't be you line speed.

Look for something like Sync speed

oops wrong thread, but it works

Okay. I found this under DSL Connection:

    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,304

Okay. I found this under DSL Connection:

    Sounds more like it.

    448kbps upload and 6304kbps download.

    So in reality...

    56Kb upload and 788Kb download.

    Tsk - you mean 56kB and 788kB.

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 23:22

    Tsk - you mean 56kB and 788kB.

Technically it should be kibibytes - which are KiB...

If you want Kilobytes then it's kB

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:23

    Kebab bites?

  • Flibster29/06/2009 at 23:27

    Kebab bites?

The joy of having Si units and IT units not matching up.

Kibibytes for 1024 - the proper value for IT

Kilobytes for 1000 - the value HDD manufactures use to overstate their HDD sizes...

  • Nick29/06/2009 at 23:28

The joy of having Si units and IT units not matching up.

I was correcting Flibster for using kb to denote kilobits and kb to denote kilobytes in the same post.

Yes. This is one of the reasons why my 160GB hard drive only has 149.05GB capacity (the rest is file system overhead).

That's what I said. I became convinced when this other guy we know, he switched his projector off and then said we had to wait 15 minutes for it to cool down before it would come on again. I said..." so this is better than a tv??"

Plus the reduced life of the bulbs... which cost almost as much as a new machine to replace!

  • Pat W29/06/2009 at 23:35

    apparently so :-)

he likes upgrading. a lot. he's also the IT manager at a school so he gets stuff frequently..

I'm waiting for the pico projector that uses "LASERs". Tiny package, focus-free and relatively cheap, plus no bulbs to break.

Morning, Joe. It could actually be near death - if the rival series IRC got more TV coverage. But since it's stuck on Eurosport, most people are stuck with WRC. Most major TV networks only cover WRC in the news too, leaving out IRC.

  • Steven Roy30/06/2009 at 01:33

Most of the manufacturers have already gone. There is only Citroen and Ford left and Ford are not that good. They need to chamge the technical regulations to find a way to get new manufacturers in.

  • Joe in Fla30/06/2009 at 01:35

It seems to me that costs can't be that great, compared to F1 or Prototype racing. But I guess the traveling and being part of the FIA will put a damper on anything

  • Journeyer30/06/2009 at 01:36

But hey, Loeb's been crashing a lot lately - their lead in the championship is almost gone, I think. It certainly makes the championship competitive again, and make Ford look better than they are.

Nothing of real interest - other than JA discussing the BBC F1 Mole's sponsorship rumors.

    Does that sound unlimited? {Comment #1041}

What they mean is that you can download as much data as you like (which is what the headline limits mean), they just want you to be careful when you do large files. A definition of "large" would have been useful, though. (Incidentally, they're not endorsing illegal activity, since it is possible to use file-sharing services and download movies legally, at least in theory).

For the record, I have a limited connection, but the limit is so high I don't go near it...
