It is Monday once more and we are thrown headlong into another week. With the extended break before Germany, though, we are not counting down to a race weekend, but rather another 'off' weekend. Still, as it is only Monday, that would be looking quite far ahead, wouldn't it? Here are some things going on at the moment:
- Ferrari have admitted that they could very well be shifting their attention to the 2010 season, which isn't exactly a surprise given how poor they are doing at the moment. The only problem is, no one really knows what 2010 is going to be, so it's a bit early to be puting all your eggs in that basket, isn't it?
- Apparently the continued building works at Donington are set to resume in August, which seems like an awful long time away. Now that they have all the necessary paperwork in place, and Gillett keeps saying financing shouldn't be a problem, why can't they get started now?
- We recorded a fun Debrief yesterday with lots of feedback and Fantasy Racers stats, plus all our findings from the Shell visit at Silverstone. The live show can be replayed here, or you can tune into the podcast version here.
That'll do it for now. I'll be tuned in to the tennis all day, so if anyone else is watching, please join me in a spot of live commenting the Wimbledon action. Feel free to ignore the tennis-shaped talk if you like, though, and discuss anything that comes to mind. I'll see you in the comments.
Helloooo *echos*
I know i said bye earlier, but i've just found the best quote in the world ever..
By our friend Mr Gillett
"It's been a lot of hard work up until this point," said Gillett. "It has been like pushing water uphill with a fork occasionally, but the team here are fantastic and we have got clarity of vision and the support of all the right people so here we are.
heheh
That doesn't say everything is going to happen as we planned. That sounds like something that eventually turns out to be "We're screwed"
Oh yeah, of course they're screwed, but anyone who uses the phrase "It has been likike pushing water uphill with a fork occasionally" needs a nobel prize
live commenting wimbledon? Dont mind if i do!
It is quarter to one in the morning. Wimbledon hasn't started yet
You could comment that it's dark and there are no players on the courts
christine suggests live commenting the tennis in the daily post ;)
I know she doesn't like outside but she should at least know it is still dark
haha. Speaking of it being dark I need to get some sleep. Night all x
Night Lou
Please lobby the FIA (or directly Ferrari) to bring the F1 back to Montreal.
god, just like the boomtown rats i dont like mondays.
Don't worry about it. The race will be back next year or the year after
Nobody likes Mondays
Mondays, Thursdays... days of the week are not popular around here
I didnt mind Mondays at my old job. I think knowing the end is in sight here makes me hate it more.
Morning all.
had enough sleep sean?
Barely, although it appears that you got less.
Morning, everyone.
Good afternoon.
Good night!
Still morning here. Hehe. :D
Anyway, wow, rough morning for me. I'm not supposed to work for another 90 minutes, but that other company we're getting people from is irritating me no end.
Night Guille. :)
Hi guys.
Watching the end of the baseball. The Mets just walked Mariano Rivera with the bases loaded. I think the Yankees may win
They what?!?
They have walked 11 so far and three times the Yankees have finished an inning with the bases loaded. They have only had 4 hits
That is awful. Thing is, the Mets are even more awful. :O
That was the top of the ninth. Posada started the inning with a pop up that the short stop, 2B and CF all went for then stood and looked at each other as the ball landed on the grass
Riviera just got his 500th career save
I don't know much about baseball and I won't pretend to, but that sounds rather poor.
Oh... Gawd. :O
Good stat for Mariano. Well done! :D
Let's just say that for a team that SPENDS, spends, spends on its payroll as much as the Mets does, these things shouldn't be happening.
It's about as bad as you can get. Walking a pitvher who has only ever batted 3 times since he came into the league in 1996 is a bit worse though.
Anyway. 5am. Time for bed.
pitcher
For crying out loud, who walks a pitcher?!
Night Steven.
Night.
From yesterday's Times, has this been brought up?
Max Mosley about-turn clears path for Jean Todt
In other words, they'll believe it when they see it.
Well, I guess they have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt.
http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/06/a-bit-of-light-relief.html
Guess racing ain't the only thing Heikki can't do well ;)
I just hope that if and when Todt does get elected, he doesn't become a Max-drone. He is so much better than that. Sadly, I'm probably going to be disappointed.
FOTA seem to be quietly confident, if anything, that Max will step down (even if he'd hand over to a pro-Max guy like Todt). I wonder why - I'm really thinking there is a written agreement of some sort which they can use against Max in case he really does run.
Morning Sidepodcast!
We're taking the week off work, so today we are stealing our nieces and taking them to Legoland. Will let you know how it goes later ;)
Morning everyone. I think I have ghosts in my house or something.... I just woke up and the rotation on my computer had moved. It's really hard to move back though because the rotation of my touch pad had moved but not by the same amount as the screen. Why would that suddenly happen? :(
Legoland?!?! Awww man! Pictures, pretty please?? :D
Does anyone else have access to your computer? Maybe someone touched it?
I wish I could go to Legoland.
And hello to anyone that has just arrived.
No, not at the moment.....
Eurgh, I'm supposed to be packing,.... I really can't be bothered!
56 minutes to go, come on home time!
It's always the best time at work.
good afternoon coffee time everybody
I could do with a coffee actually.
just made one myself, smells really good on my desk :-)
AAAARGH!!! Don't mention the C word :(
Why is it a C word?
I am enjoying a coffee right now too... Morning all
morning all, i am not sure if 4 hours was enough sleep, but i am sue time will tell
I work for a coffee chain. My whole life smells of the stuff!
Wimbledon is back today - and we'll be treated to Federer-Soderling today. That said, Soderling hasn't looked nearly as impressive here as he did in RG.
Ah... I see... In that case I'll have a double tripple half caf skinny whipped mocha cap or some such.
Or maybe not... I like coffee but I wouldn't want to smell it all the time.
(actually I drink Black Americanos which must be close to the easiest things to do).
Is RG playing today? I knew I'd been away for a few days... But that really is a surprise.
Yeah. To be honest, I really like making the coffee and serving the customers. I just hate the political side of my job. Who'd have thought it could all be so complicated....
The Politics of a Cup of Coffee. Sounds like an interesting title...
Does Max run your coffee shop?
No, I do! For the next 3 weeks at least....
You should quickly bring in a budget cap(puccino)
Hah. They've taken away my power to do anything. I can't even sack staff that swear at me apparently.... Or move jars around on the counter.
:D
Seriously though, change all the rules, keep people confused and you will have to stay in charge
You need to change the rules, max wouldn't accept that
Do you work for a chain coffee shop or an independant one?
I've handed in my notice. The general plan was to go work somewhere that gives their staff some respect.....
Chain!!
Those chain's are scary, one is run by the costa nostra, and i hear emperor nero has one too.
Yeah, I wouldn't like to make defamatory comments though. They've not been bad to me in the grand scheme. I'm 21 and they've let me work my way up to manager in a year. I can now go on to get a job I wouldn't have had a sniff at this time last year.
Hi!
I got the most fantastic present ever from my wife this weekend. I'm going to the race at Nürnburgring, my first live experience of F1!
I've got a question we're sitting on grandstand 10b anyone here who's been there and on that grandstand? Is there something that you really have to do when in nürnburg?
/Fredrik
Well that's exactly the thing. There's always a trade off with these things. On the one hand chains give you no real power on the other chains will let you climb the ladder if you are responsible and work hard.
Congratulations. What a great present!
Phone in to the parade lap before the race?
Someone mention coffee? :D
I like coffee. Lots of coffee. I have coffee. On my just had my 3rd double espresso today. Australian Skyberry beans - very yummy.
Has there been any changes to the Nurnburgring since 2006 as I love racing there on my playstation?
Not to suggest that I'm a power-hungry maniac or anything. I just think that I can't take abuse from both sides anymore. I work myself into the ground and somehow I get abuse from my area manager even though I'm running the tightest ship in the area, similarly my staff are allowed to treat me how they like and he refuses to instigate any disciplinary proceedings.
On the plus side, I know who's taking the shop on. I'm pretty sure they'll last about a week....
Ahhh I love Australian Skyberry :)
Wow! That is wonderful! Do tell us how it goes.
Anyone here who's watched a GP at the Nürburgring?
I want a present like that...
You are very lucky, enjoy it!
HasBean?
I first chose it because it was odd - Australian coffee? But I now drink a lot of the stuff.
Also go for the Nicaraguan El Limincillo a lot too.
Morning all.
That sums up Australia pretty well. A bit odd, but great. ;)
Morning.
Actually Sainsbury's taste the difference - although I think they may have stopped it.
Good morning!
Anyone have any amazing advice for my house moving??
What's the chances they'll beg for you to come back? ;)
Have a checklist, and pack your stuff by category. :)
Ah checklist! That sounds like a job I can do without actually getting up....
I am a champion at this.
In all honesty, I wouldn't count it out. They offered it to me while I was working somewhere else.
I'm not interested really though. It's always nice to watch someone you dislike fail though ;)
You and Christine both are, if I understand Mr C correctly. :)
I'm a disorganised wreck! I'm supposedly "packed" at the moment....
My brother would suggest: get your relatives to do it for you
I make lots of lists but I am not necessarily good at it. I still forget things and potter about unorganised.
Christine: can i listen back to the full stream from yesterday, or just the edited version?
The replay is available here: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/06/28/live-dont-mention-the-p/
great, thanks for that. Beats watching top gear australia
Caffee Timor-Leste Medium Roast, one of the remaining souvenirs from trip to Melbourne :-)
Now that's a compliment and a half....
Australia makes coffee? Who knew.
well....have you ever seen it?
this one is from East Timor :-)
No, I'm not sure I'd want to!
no, you really wouldn't
You don't, trust me. It's...well, horrible.
horrible. Yes, well that's generous.
That's kinda what I meant.... That you were insulting poor Christine's hard work!
Don't do it...
Yup, thats about it. You'll always break and lose something
Not at all! Just meant i would rather listen to the unedited live show than that "other" TV thing. :D
Horrible is an understatement, but sidepodcast is a family show ;)
and normally quite funny
oooooo. I see what you mean......
I've not listened to the debrief yet. Twas my plan for my drive today.
Everytime I look around, I see more things I need to take with me.
I have nothing that could be regarded as even remotely valuable!!
Plus my wheelie bin is full.... I don't really want to just leave bags in the yard, not in this heat!
ooh pictures of dubai on the drop!?
ooh Roger
It was a couple of years ago now; 05 or 06 i think
yah, I remember it at the time. He has a nice place there.
He also has his own practice court at a hotel, which i may or may not have played on ;)
ooh, very nice :D
I bet you weren't playing against Fed though ;)
I was thinking the other day how nice it was for Haas to play with all those kids when he could just have gone home...
They'll remember that for the rest of their lives!
No although i doubt it would be much of a game even i was. :D
One girls is supposed to be an up and coming pro, quite a way to launch a career!
The latest Ask the Expert quiz is yet again trying to get into Amy's good books with a question about King Rog, but sadly Sutil gets it wrong.
http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2009/6/9556.html
Oh Adrian, they couldn't have asked an easier question about him!
He scored the lowest out of all drivers too.
This is acceptable though, no one is allowed to beat Heikki. If they do they're getting a one way ticket to Amydoesn'tlikeyouland.
Are we still talking about Ask the Expert? ;)
:)
Lewis, Kazuki, Piquet and Rosberg, all born in the same year as me, doesn't this mean i should be an F1 driver?
Amy have you seen that their are new mclaren vids with hekki talking about Silverstone?
Aren't you?
Indeed I have. I prefer Heikki videos where he is being funny though :D
I dont think so
your last name Heidfeld?
Hmmmm do you think a job in a tile shop would be too soul destroying to do? Even if the money's good....
Are you unshaven with scruffy hair?
Yes probably. Unless you can get excited about bathroom renovations. In which case, can you suggest a tile? :D
...Yes....
Afraid not!
From Wimbledon live blog:
1056: The warm, comforting tone of the Voice of Wimbledon informs us that the weather forecast is "very encouraging" for today. He then suggests we use "sun cream and a hat". He then suggests that anyone without a hat "pay a visit to one of our shops or kiosks, where I'm sure you'll find something of a suitable style and colour". Alright, Nicholas, you're pushing you're luck now.
oooooo. So close.
hmmm perhaps i need to tidy my self up.... Les we be confused again.
I did lose the beard for my school reunion the other day then some girl complained it was gone...
Life remains a mystery to me.
Job Centre Website is plain awful.... Why when I've said the most important thing to me is location is it giving me jobs reading meters in Durham..... That fits NO criteria!
Why can't I separate retail jobs from sales?? AAAARGH!!
Why dont they start wimbledon an hour earlier so people dont have to choose between so many matches at once. Property programmes are really bad background viewing... they just got excited about a 5 ring burner :(
Job Centre Website is plain awful {Comment #149}
Seconded. It didn't even give me accurate information about the jobs that did fit the criteria (though to be honest, given the employer, that may not have been JobCentre's fault).
To be fair, so far I've found the employers who quietly discriminate against me for no logical reason more difficult than any element of the JobCentre itself.
Let’s just say that for a team that SPENDS, spends, spends on its payroll as much as the Mets does, these things shouldn’t be happening. {Comment #35}
You mean it's like Toyota before this year?
From yesterday’s Times, has this been brought up?
Max Mosley about-turn clears path for Jean Todt {Comment #39}
The scary thing is that it could just as easily be Alan Donnelly, who's also a Max supporter par excellance, is also likely to be biased (links with Ferrari are well-known, but ones with Manor have been uncovered in the last few days) and likely to go down like a lead balloon in the F1 paddock in the same way as Jean Todt.
We need Nick Craw!
Shock horror - most expensive car on the grid is....
The Brawn BGP001
Ok, it's a GMM story, but it certainly seems that for once it's not a complete pile of pants.
5 wind tunnels
3 car designs
€500'000'000 budget.
If Force India had those facilities I'd expect them to be at the pointy end...
I read that earlier...
Whilst using the windtunnels in 3 different counties wasnt news, i did wonder why GMM didnt mention anything about unicorns.
It makes honda's departure look a bit different, clearly it was a massive department, and clearly leaving when they did was extremely strange.
* wasnt new news
The 3 different car designs was to me.
That was a bit, but yo wonder how normal that is, especialy if you have multiple teams working on a car, each trying out different concepts in different asreas, and in this case different wind tunnels!
Thinking about this, could a team build separate cars for low speed street circuits, and for high speed ones if they wanted?
If they had a money tree? Yeah I'm sure they could. I'm not sure in a practical sense it'd be that effective though in that your R&D efforts might become too fragmented.
Been done before. McLaren and Ferrari have certainly done it. Significantly different wheelbases depending on the track layout.
IIRC the McLaren has something in the region of 1ft difference.
Several years ago they used to have cars just for qualifying. Engines designed to do 3 laps at a time. No radiators, different wings and floors. Only thing that survived between Qualifying and the race was the tub, seat and steering system.
Shock horror – most expensive car on the grid is….
The Brawn BGP001
Ok, it’s a GMM story, but it certainly seems that for once it’s not a complete pile of pants.
5 wind tunnels
3 car designs
€500?000?000 budget.
If Force India had those facilities I’d expect them to be at the pointy end… {Comment #155}
5 wind tunnels? Teams are only allowed one!
It also means that Force India, which I believe is on a $120m (€85,403,158.66) budget, is operating on 17.08% of Brawn's budget...
What if none of the wind tunnels were owned by the team? All owned by the parent company perhaps?
Or even the US-based windtunnel (owned by that guy who's now helping out with USF1)
Why are online job application forms so annoying?? Can anyone remember their GCSE results, I can't see how they're in any way relevant to anything....
I do remember mine but you're right, they are not relevant and no one ever checks.
I know where my certificates are which is doing better than most of my friends.... Alas, that place is not here!
Caroline Cheese at Wimbledon tweets:
"Serena has designer bag on one arm, Tesco bag on the other. A woman after my own heart."
"Hang on, now Venus walks by, also carrying Tesco bag. Have they been stocking up on 3 for 2s?"
and you're embarrassed about your choice of fuel?
Yes. I still am, because David said so.
Huh?
Ah-ha! An excellent excuse to plug this week's show :)
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/06/28/f1-debrief-i-think-there-was-something-subtle-in-there/
Ah, I'm planning on having a listen when I'm driving my beautifully packed car to my new house this afternoon!
How's that going?
Slowly.... I'm too easily distracted. On the plus side, I've managed to finish 4 more job applications. Amazing how easy it is to do things you were putting off when you're trying to put off something else!
That would be an excellent motto for life, I reckon.
That is SO true. :)
At Legoland having lunch. Great fun so far - my niece is about to go to traffic school. If you can read this then mobile doohickey works on my crappy phone ;)
To be honest, it's just my kitchen I've got left to do. Everything else is boxed up in my spare room! I might leave my kitchen stuff, I mean I've got to live here another 4 days.... It's hiking everything to the car by myself that I really can't be bothered with.... There are double yellow outside my house with very overzealous parking wardens so it might be a bit of a distance to go!
So so jealous!!
Defiantly working... Are you allowed to go to school too?
Did roger come out in his trousers today or was it too hot?
And is Amy staying up for it? (silly question)
Has anyone mentioned that Martin Brundle is the You Ask the Questions victim in this month's F1 Racing and he answers the perennial Hungary question?
"Watch this space because I'm going to be in Hungary for the first time this year. The reason I used to miss it was because it was during the school holidays and it was the one chance I had to go on holiday to my villa in Spain with the kids. ITV were happy with that, but the BBC weren't quite so impressed."
Don't blame them!
Why does everyone apart from me seem to have a Spanish villa...
Awwww! I feel sorry for him.... He's allowed to see his children surely!
It's not asking too much for a commentator to turn up to 17 weekends a year, is it?
Hah, I suppose not. It's his little routine now though....
I agree. He only has to be there for one night, its not asking that much. And, well, it is his job...
Arent they all grown up and racing drivers now?
Anyway, i think i might complain, MB has ruined the internets favourite game of "why isnt Martin Brundle allowed into Hungary?" :P
It could still be a cover for whatever misdemeanour has seen him banned.
We won't know until we see him there.
correct me if i'm wrong, but charlie is 21 and alex is 18. when was the last time either of them took "school holidays"
that is utter tosh.
He could pretend to be there and use a compilation of previous grid walks to fool us all....
that is true...
I would speculate it is because he once kissed a Turul, the national bird of Hungary...
Maybe it started out like that then became a little routine. Tbh if you could get away with it, wouldn't you??
Mmm. I was thinking that unless my school was extraordinarily generous, school holidays used to be six weeks as well.
No! Not for a job like that!
hasn't there been a 3-week august break in the formula one season for that very reason?
they probably went to private school where they holidays are longer too...
After I have signed off this week I am on holiday until September!!
A trio of beautiful Benetton's are running at Kemble today. Ex- Piquet, Berger and Schumacher cars – getting ready for Goodwood on Saturday.
Rob
cool! any idea who's driving?
Awesome? Have they snuck 2009 wings on any of them?
Jealous!!! :P
Hehehe. Watch him quietly vanish in Valencia. :P
Wow! Same q as Mr C. :)
At random in the office Romeo and Juliet came up in conversation and a debate started about which version was better.
Very deja-vu
The original!!
I agree the play by Shakespeare is my fav too ;)
there are others?
I am hungry and need diet coke, to achive this i will need to brave the outside...
I have put it off for an hour but it looks like i might have to risk it...
Normally, I would say don't do it, but for coke, it is worth it.
Mmmm diet coke with cherry!
There is a song by Dire Straights and a cover by the Killers
Ok here goes... i will report back as to whether the rumours of it being 'really hot' are true
Alison! Get on with your packing! ;)
Ah yes, i remember now.
Movie is still better...
I'm having a tennis break.... :P
Apparently there are quite a lot of cover versions:
By Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls on the band's 1992 album Rites of Passage (a solo performance).
By Cliff Eberhardt on his 1995 album Mona Lisa Café.
By Michael Braunfeld on his 1997 album Steel City.
By Edwin McCain on his 2003 album The Austin Sessions.
By Monte Montgomery on his 2003 live album New & Approved.
By Matt Nathanson on his 2006 album At the Point.
By The Killers on their 2007 album Sawdust.
By Steve Knightley on his 2007 album Cruel River.
I survived...
It strangely smells of summer flavour air freshener out there
;)
Heat warnings are greatly exaggerated... best described as 'aggressively tepid'
Whereabouts are you?
#
Ruralish Surrey
Although i will add, it is a little clamy
I did not type this?
invisible has tag?
Regarding the Benettons - I don't recognise the drivers I'm afraid, one is a woman.
Rich folk preparing their toys for Goodwood I think!
Nothing much happening at the moment, Schueys B193 (I think), has a flat battery. It is also shod with wet weather tyres which seems a little odd given that you could fry eggs on the runway right now...
Rob
Apparently so...:D
invisible h?
cheeky!
;)
woman driver? can only be danica.
we need to encourage you to invest in a zoom lens, sir.
;)
There was a woman driver in the pit stop feature that the BBC did on the weekend. Or rather there was a woman in the suit and helmet, I'm guessing there wasn't that much actual driving going on in the studio.
i don't know much about nascar. but is this man meant to be floating?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1312052
The video on the festival of speed website has gotten me excited about this weekend!
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/site/content/festivalofspeed/Default.aspx
There is so much randomness in that photo... What on earth is that clown hand-face-sign for?
i think, so that drivers know where to stop?
Like the lollipop man but more... clown-like.
But its really creepy!
it appears to be mocking the drivers?
Maybe they use it to enrage Montoya?
either that, or it works like fish bait, tempting the drivers in with its freaky grin?
Question: (might need Steven Roy)
Are there any circuits which operate their tracks in both directions?
Apart from in different configurations like indy e.t.c..
DONE!
That is a VERY good question! Haven't heard of any, TBH. The closest that I know is Singapore - although it was originally designed to run clockwise, it has only run counter-clockwise.
Well done :)
I didn't know Fed's match was already done...
Just having a rest before driving over.... Can't be doing with taking it all out my car again!
I didnt know that! Do you know why it changed?
hehe, well done, that is always the worst part of moving stuff, but you're half way!
All that effort makes me think I've earned some nachos!
They made significant changes to the course layout, which may have changed the rhythm of the track. Lemme see if I can find a page describing it...
Anyone else heard the rumours about a former team boss being put forward for FIA President?
I've heard 2 differing ones. One is the expected Jean Toad - Mosley Puppet Party
The other is Ron Dennis on the FOTA the FIA Party.
I'd prefer Dennis over Toad, but Stoddy over both!
I hope you havent packed them!
I've heard that one.
I HAVEN'T heard that one.
Ah cheers that would be great
Cant we just have Eddie Jordan and get it over with?
unfortunately they forgot to do anything about the pit entry and exit - which was a shame
No... He'd still appear on TV.
Plus he'd ban Raikkonen for being unmotivated...
The iPhone seem to be a hot gadget... literally!
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/06/iphone-3gs-handsets-overheat-turn-brown/
Wouldnt that be a good thing?
think of all the other changes he could make..
Mclaren, that is the worst car you have ever built, it is banned, try again please
Renault have been pushing heavily against it being Toad or Ron
Very true - that has been revised for this year, though.
Anyway, here's an article describing what changes were made from the original draft to the final version for last year:
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/275808/1/.html
Stoddy? :D
Stewart? :D
Thanks, very interesting!
Well both would be out because Renault said, "nobody who had any affiliation to any current team". Stewart is ambassador for Williams now. Stoddart... Well one of the teams out there has Minardi DNA ;)
Joe's article containing the original layout:
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns19001.html
If any of you are in a heat wave, I would like to kill you.
On a lighter note, hey all!
Seven weeks this year, for me.
Regarding the lady Benetton driver I am pretty sure its not Danica as it took me a few moments to tell if it was a woman or not. Danica does not present such identification problems :-)
I'd love it to be either of them as it would really, REALLY annoy Mosley. :D
I have found an article saying Taku will be driving a benneton http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/16062009/23/taku-appear-goodwood-beaulieu.html
Although he isn't on the entry list i have
there can't be more than one woman driver. that would require journalists to refer to them by name, to distinguish between individuals and that simply will not do :(
there is also Buemi's female cousin.
There's one in Formula Renault as well.
And Kate's Dirty Sister. ;)
I'm really impressed by how well Lisicki is doing! She's beaten 3 seeds so far.
:)
I'm not, I lost a fiver now due to her winning.
greetings all. if i listen to f1 minute for the last 10 days, will that be enough to catch me up to speed? I was in bologna the same time as FOTA but clearly we stayed at different hotels.
Hah. Well usually after an upset it's because of a good/lucky day and they're out in the next round.
She's got the momentum now though. Strangely, even though she's got the #1 seed, she looks like she's in the good quarter of the draw....
It will be, up until the point I stopped talking about politics.
Hehe :) is there one where you talk about fluffy bunnies and good things?
Not quite, but I have thought about it a couple of times :)
ooh that good huh?
Oooh - the little goits deserve worse than that. Give the brat a 8 track and a vinyl player.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8117619.stm
Why is he a brat?
Clever kid.
For this line
Nonsense. I'd say that about a million inventions that I never used because they are before my time.
So you'd immediately dismiss them as useless?
RAIN
YAY!
I think its broke....
It is useless now, yes.
Nah, it's pathetically light...
I actually bought one less than 6 years ago!
Come on Star Sports, show us the roof coming on!!!
But was always useless?
As in a non-credible piece of technology, which is essentially what the kid says.
Not useless now, useless then..
We have a documentary about the roof...
I missed Clinton at wimbledon, it looked pretty funny
why??
Awww you missed it? Too late now!
But the entire premise of the piece is to compare the Walkman with the iTouch, and if you directly compare them, it is always the Sony that's going to come off less credible.
In context, it is not brattish.
a bought a portable minidisc player when I went travelling. Just as an obscure iPod device was being released!
tis very light in there.
Ms Cheese says:
1646: I am text-commentating on a roof closing. I never thought this day would come. A big cheer from the folk on Centre as the two sides of the roof meet in the middle. All very weird, and all very British. And it seems apt that Cliff Richard is looking on.
hehe, it did actualy turn out to be a reall good buy.
I was backpacing around the world, back then mp3 capacity wasnt really that great..
I think we were in Thailand, and it proved a really cheap way of buying music, we didnt have to worry about cds being scratched, and more importantly it didn't jump whilst on bumpy journeys.
It also survived falling off a rickshaw, and being full of sand. If i went backpacking again, i would be very tempted to repeat it. you really don't have to worry about it being stolen either!
...and an APS camera. I'm no tech mystic, it seems :)
oh dear. i bought my first mp3 player in '99. must've been at least 2 years before the ipod, but apple's device was about 6 times bigger / better than the one i had.
heeeeh! :)
I had one of those, i loved it!
think i must have lost it though
Yeah, I spent over $200 Australian (about 90-95 pounds now) on a 128mb mp3 when they came out.
that sounds about right. battery life was an astonishing 12hrs (previous portable cd player was about 12 minutes on the same battery).
I have a way of solving the walkman debate.
Here is a picture of me using a walkman:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/giggleswithwalkman-jpg
I was ahead of my time!
I still have my 1st generation ipod working. It's like a brick now with it's little black and white screen but I love it!
3, 2, 1. Awwwww.
hehe, that brilant! love the threads!
Rockbox it.
Get some decent sound quality out of it - finally.
i'm not sure what you've solved. but those foam headphones are brilliant!
is that pre-click wheel?
I also should mention i have an 03 reg car which has a tape deck!
actually, that was the rotary wheel wasn't it? that was the best version.
I'm not really sure either :)
You've got it right!! Absolutely the best. 5GB which seems ridiculous now
Ah Bassano... Good to see you here... What's this about Manila I hear?
that's very fetching two-piece. Probably the last time you were in public without a collared shirt on I'd imagine ;)
whatever happened to orange headphones, great for visibility
err, I should probably explain over a pint sometime. It may take a while :)
putting the roof on seems to have been a complete waste of time.
Apart from showing off that they have it to the world....
Yeah. I did say it was only light!! Silly people....
My first MP3 player was a present - only played 128kbps mp3's and I went back to tapes after that. Was probably around 98/99
128kbps was/is not CD quality by any stretch of the imagination.
Minidisc was just as bad as MP3's at that point.
Then the high capacity minidiscs came out aroudn the same time as proper mp3 players. My first proper MP3 player was the iRiver iHP-100, later the iHP-140 - still have it and use it now as it has optical input and output.
Is "Air Management" the same as dealing with the weather?
They have to make sure it doesn't get too humid inside. All the sweaty people would make the grass slippy otherwise!
I was just thinking about that... They were iconically Sony. Perhaps that's where the idea of the white Apple headphones came from?
It sounds like what happens on a car journey the morning after beans on toast
:) Sounds like a plan... A pint could be easily do-able at some point this week or next any week better?
Beans beans are good for your heart...
If you think of anything naughty after that then that is your own lookout ;)
Was Sepang an alternative to manilla or am i getting mixed up with another conversation?
am on earlies this week so is better. Have two arrangements to firm up. Is Friday out? Could get kat to join us later if you fancy
Very true... I was casually listening to my walkman... However when it came to working on my Mac I had switched back to the collared shirt:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/giggleswithmac-jpg
it's been mentioned, nothing firm at the moment so am open to options. It wasn't even a race weekend, just a trip
I'm not sure about Friday. Kat is going to an exhibition on Thursday or Friday. If it's Friday we'd be quids in.
Its getting late/early, I'm off.
Night fellas.
night, have a good tomorrow
i should know more tomorrow about my plans
nice mac pic
See ya Sean
Yup - If enough people are interested, we can set it up so that you can go to Sepang the weekend before or after Manila. Amy is going there next year (I think). If you have the cash for it, why not?
I might be in Australia next year so it would be a good trip for me, but i can barely plan july let alone 2010 at the moment

For anyone on Facebook that missed the roof close:
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=221318485595
Anyone think they started cheering too soon? Bit Allen-esque.
Yeah I thought that when I watched it. They'd almost lost enthusiasm by the time it actually closed....
Tis a bit echoey in there now the roof is on.
Hewitts wife was just on tv... smiling and clapping
I don't like it! I wish they hadn't built it.... Tbh having reruns helps me become an informed individual.
And yes, you're right. It sounds like they're at a swimming pool.
Ah, he must be doing a bit better then. When I looked earlier he was two sets down. I trust she wouldn't be smiling then.
I guess that should be "I guess she wasn't smiling then." My tenses are all muddled.
its 2-1 now Amy will be most pleased, he demolished him in the last set...
No she won't. Amy hates his guts. Like everyone else....
But doesn't he have Aussie fans?
A lot of Aussies hate him, makes me like him all the more
The man is on fire... the rain started it, so i dont know if it can be put out.
I've decided what I hate about hawkeye.... It's totally removed the on-court tantrums. They've got to be the best thing about tennis and now they're gone!
Too true. Haas was getting a bit angry with some calls earlier, and he was on... court three, maybe.
I like hawk-eye!
And Mauresmo has broken Safina in Set 3. :D
I can't work out who I'm rooting for! I've never really liked Mauresmo. But Safina's got her midriff hanging out so I'm a bit torn :D
Midriff seals it for me
Nonononono don't move channel. I can't see what I've done with the remote!
Thinking it might be in the car....
Mrs hewitt getting lots of attention as Clayton roars away...
Security looking very silly...
Oops!
hehehe, thats priceless!
Glastonbury is my idea of hell but there are some awesome pictures today:
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/06/glastonbury_2009.html
Guess that's my cue to go get my stuff moved! I'll find it when I unpack I'm sure. See you later
They are awesome, is it just me or does new tom jones look a little like EJ?
Hehehe.
you don't have to sleep in a bread bin. other tents are available.
It certainly looks that way. It also looks like there's about a millimetre between each one, which is somewhat disconcerting.
It does seem a little bit outdoors focused
you're meant to be sober enough to notice.
*not
NOT!
picture 16 is all the evidence you'll need that gaffa tape can fix anything.
i have issues.
Like the one in number 18?
that is a bit extreme for day 0.
was thinking more like 28. which is a genius solution for drinking whilst dancing. that idea needs to be patented.
It's not very graceful though.
oops. slept through the tennis. now its 3am and I'm wondering where my evening went.
We wondered where you were! You missed the roof!
Mauresmo may have won the first 3 games of the final set, but Safina won 6 of the last 7 to go through to the QFs.
A shame - Mauresmo should've had her.
Oh well. Murray should be next, but will probably go to bed before that's done. Night all!
You're just in time to see clayton chewitt do the business, followed by a murray match
Night Journeyer and welcome back Amy.

How exactly did LDM's statements do that? I see nothing of the sort.
oh no fernandoooooo
Hey gang
Hey, hows the motorsports world sateside? i head something about the weekends IRL race being a joke?
I don't know in context you speak. They had more people in the stands than Istambul, but it was follow the leader to the cautions, which were numerous. It wasn't a bad race. They return to road courses this weekend
I will say I can doom any driver to life of mediocrity. I tuned to the NASCAR race to see how Scott Speed was doing, made it up to 19th, the next shot he's backward into the wall. Kimi, 2005 enough said. 2006 the car was junk. 2007 a bright spot and he's back where I, as a fan have doomed him
Ah i only caught the end of something on ESPN, probably more overtakes than an F! race, but ovals spoil you for that
The road courses are pretty boring, the cars are detuned to 650 HP or so and they are just look slow on a road course. But the cars are tanks. One guy hit another guy in the rear, lifted him off the ground and did slight nose wing damage, really didn't need to replace it.
I've been three times. - several years ago now. Not interested me recently.
last time I went, a group of 6 of us bought a lwb transit and just filled the inside with snacks, loo roll and matresses - was the best way. Plus we could get out of the field afterwards whereas other people couldn't. :D
Out of three times - had one dry morning. :D
Evenin all :) Brilliant day weather wise, isn't it?
Evening
It was a short oval and there was not a lot of overtaking. To me it looked like the same problem we have on a lot of F1 tracks. The cars are too big and too fast for the track. When you get to that situation overtaking a car unless you have a huge advantage is rarely going to happen.
What was facinating though was watching the live stream on indycar.com. FREE Bernie FREE. You had the choice of five cameras including onboards with only engine noise and you could select telemetry from one to 5 drivers. THe TV director was lacking something but as a FREE package offered by the championship I thought it was superb and I will definitely tune into it again.
Hi Scott....though it is raining here
Grrrrr, lukcy little...
It's been nothing but blue skies throughout today. Rather humid too, but there's been one or two nice breezes blowing through. That's what we have to make do with in the office since there's no air con.
Indycar does "get it". But Tony George has done his share of screw ups. There is very good access, in St. Pete for an extra $60 I had paddock passes and got up and close to the cars and haulers and you see lots of drivers. Almost stepped on a little child, then I realized it was Danica Patrick
f1 drivers don't usually feel the need to apologise for the rubbish racing, though do they?
"There’s nothing the drivers can do about it. We’re trying as hard as we can. It was a terrible race..."
Apparently solutions are already being talked about including power boost buttons and better tyres.
I didn't know about that. I'll go to Speedtv.com and read Robin Miller's column, he's a huge Indycar guy, but is also very critcal of the sport at times
Evening Steven, i was wondering if you could help me answer this
without ever watching a full irl race, nor having any idea about anything much really. i'm guessing a power boost is daft idea, right?
The drivers say they can't get close enough to overtake. So with a power boost I'm thinking they can?
In the tennis Chewit won an amazing match!
Indycar has never had that, Champcar did. It alternated from a push to pass to a push to defend button. It wasn't the cure-all. Indycar needs a chassis that is not butt-ugly, for one thing. Open the series up to better cars.
go Stannnnnnn
Different standards. I have watched many F1 races which were less entertaining than that one was. F1 drivers have no concept of entertainment in races. Lewis and Kimi may have done the odd donut after the race but it is a safe bet either of them ever thought about whether a race was entertaining for the fans.
read about it on pressdog's live blog:
"Glad I didn't pay to see it. Graham is P3. Talking to him. I lost interest long ago. Not sure how driving in an ARCA race anywhere would be less appealing for Danica than participating in this mess. I'm out of here."
won't it be exactly the same as kers? used defensively?
fair point.
NO!. They just need more drag on th cars so that following cars can clingshot past them. Why is it that so many people in racing can't get it into their heads that aerodynamics is always the problem. The reason they are so fast in the first place is downforce.
Pretty much.
Is Richmond's oval bigger than the one at bristol? does the Irl go to BMS?
No but that would be insane. Remember about 10 yrs ago Champcar had to cancel the race in Texas because the cars were too fast and inducing vertigo on the drivers, Bristol would probably be worse
Stan is doing so well. I heart the Swiss.
A double break this early!!
Interesting. None that I can think of in recent years. I know either Knockhill or Ingliston in Scotland ran in revers once in the 1980s. The theory was that it gave the drivers some variety without requirning a different set up. Strangely it didn't actually occur to anyone until they ran the cars that the same circuit in the opposite direction is really a different circuit and needs a different set up.
I have experience once of running a circuit in reverse. There is a very good indoor karting track at Cambuslang near Glasgow which is in an old warehouse and before the roof got fixed it could get wuite wet inside. Some genius decided that itt was saer in the wet to run n the reverse direction. I have no idea what logic arrived at that conclusion. I only know that is the only time I have smashed my head off a pillar in a kart.
Howdy everyone,
Gardening with the kids went very well...on a slightly random note...
Does anyone know how long F1 lollypops are?
TAKE THAT ANDY MURRAY
I can tell you they are shorter and less creepy than bashcar ones from the conversation earlier...
now that is a question....
if i told you why i need to know, you wouldnt believe me.
i've got the tube bit, just got it from focus, very reasonable, and now im cutting the piece of wood for hte circle bit at hte end, the "lolly" if you will. im just not sure how long to make the thing
hmm. am gonna guess they vary depending on how tall the person is holding them?
The bbc feature on pitstops might help you get an estimate, i am not sure if it is still online though
Question for Joe?
Aw I want to go back to bed but this match is SO GOOD.
Need it for before then i'm afraid..
I've gone for a good ol' Jon-stimate.
By the way, fyi
a Jon-stimate is like an estimate but more wrong :D
There must be a picture o a lollipop beside a car or on a wall next to something we know the legth of. Either that or there must be one next to a mechanic wih the lollipop upright.

Evening.
It was okay, nothing more than a gimmick though - in the sense that the passing increased a bit but you always knew it was because of the button.
I've never seen it tried on an oval and I can't see how it would be a good idea on one.
i have one of them. but i've no idea how tall the guy holding it is?
I figure most would be through their allotment of boost by about the 4th lap. I think it was 60 sec. for a race
Exactly. Richmond and Texas before it are usually very exciting races, lots of passing. From what I've heard, they were one-line racetracks this year.
Like this one?

Evenining guys and gals.
Hey Lukeh.
You must be able to tell whether he is particularly small or tall or if he is about average. At least we should be able to get a range from it.
I'm guess it's not standard, just so they guy does'nt get hit by the car as it leaves
This reminds me a lot of high school maths and dudes standing by trees and how tall is the tree if he is x metres away
right, back to sleep for me. This match might go forever so I can't watch it all :(
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lollipop-dude-jpg
Night Amy.
Oh, hi Lukeh.
So it looke like 6 or 7 feet. We know the car is 1.8 metres wide so the bit over the car is about a metre-ish and the other end only needs to be long enough for the guy holding it to be able to see up the pitlane for oncoming traffic and to give him a long enough piece to gold so that the leverage isn't to much for him to comfortably hold it.
So if you build a car and get ewnough people round it to simulate a pit stop it should be easy to work out the ideal length of a lollipop. Or you could just phone one of the teams and ask.
aaaahhh, :D thank you rather lots.
i think mines quite close to that
Or i could just cut it and hope :D
Hi Lukeh / Night Amy
That won't be accurate.
now... i refuse to offer any more help/advice until you tell us why?
I'm guessing he's using them as oars for his boat made of bottles?
Boat pit stops
ok...well i dont need anymore help anyway ;) but i will tell you why.
baasically, our church car park is smaller than the amount of people that come to the church when we let people park themselves, so we now have parking attendants who make sure everyones parking properly, and in the right order if they want to leave early (near the exit) or later (far from the exit) in case we have to double park people....anywho, its quite a mundane job and so yesterday we decided to spice it up by getting table tennis bats and directing the cars as if they were aeroplanes (like the little man standing in front of the big planes with the red bat thing)
annnnywho, everyone loved it, so i've decided to have some fun with it, and make an F1 style lollypop to stop cars etc etc.
make sense?
it's just my way of making a mundane job, more fun. :D
nooope, havent got round to that yet. dont have enough wood, but i do have enough bottles :D
change the whe...oh right yeah
I.want.to.do.that
Without wishing to spoilt your fun... you could ask them to car-share?
haha yeah, but they would do it for like 2 weeks, and then it wouldnt happen
Super Aguri's was 2m.
So while there's a bit of IndyCar chat around... Tony Kanaan walks into a 7-Eleven store to pick up a snack. What does he see?
http://twitpic.com/8r8fcT
That must be really weird..
Is there anyone who goes to your church who is called Nakajima? If there is add 3 feet to the lollipop
just spotted an F1 connection, 2nd photo across in the little previews.
Rubens
I've decuided I hate Twitter. I think it's loaded once since I returned from Silverstone. Makes it impractical as a communicative tool :(
How do you know that?
Ah yeah, always the way.
It says the photo doesn't exist any more
The Twitter website is awful, very slow. You need a client. If you can't get Adobe Air to work but are running Firefox you can get a plugin called TwitterFox which is pretty good.
Sorry, the 'T' of the next line got into the link..

What if none of the wind tunnels were owned by the team? All owned by the parent company perhaps? {Comment #163}
The ownership of a tunnel is of no interest to the FIA - it regulates based on usage. If a team is entered into the championship, it can only use one tunnel total. There is an issue of timing, though. If the other four tunnels were involved early enough, they could have got round the rule.
Repeating the feat is, however, impossible for the foreseeable future.

Kathi, you are a genius.
I do remember mine but you’re right, they are not relevant and no one ever checks. {Comment #166}
So far, every interview I've ever been to has insisted on seeing every single qualification I've had, down to the City & Guilds computer certificates I got in Year 10. This is despite me having obtained A-Levels and a degree since. It depends largely where you go to try to get employment.

Investigating. Thanks for the tip!
Admittedly it'll only help me when I'm at my computer because I can't control the add-ons for the other computer I use (it's as much as I can do to get Firefox on there before it needs another reinstall these days).
Twitterfox refused to install because of error -228. No further explanation given. Please could someone enlighten me as to what happened?
I've ditched qtl for IMTranslator successfully, so I've verified the problem is not an inability on Firefox's part to install add-ons...
correct me if i’m wrong, but charlie is 21 and alex is 18. when was the last time either of them took “school holidays” {Comment #192}
If they're at university, they still are (until this year, where Charlie would have graduated had he been on a three-year course).
Ah sorry, no idea.
I've only found this: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/unable+to+install+add-ons#Download_Error_228
hasn’t there been a 3-week august break in the formula one season for that very reason? {Comment #198}
That only started in 2003. Martin's holiday provisions were probably installed in 1997 and then not looked at again until the BBC took over.
Evening all,
Just got back from Legoland - it was an absolute blast and my nieces are lovely. I am sure that the one who did traffic school is a future racecar driver!
Arent they racing drivers?
woman driver? can only be danica. {Comment #229}
There was a woman at Autosport 2007 called Jodie Hemming who drove the Jordan 197 in a historic series, as well as at GPLive. I wonder if she's in the car at Kemble?
Arent they racing drivers? {Comment #494}
I didn't know Charlie Brundle was. I should have remembered Alex is a racer because I got his autograph in January
Haaha, it's complete. I just need to cover it, its going to have hte obligatory
"breaks on" on one side
and
"first gear" on the other :D
Am pretty sure you need to be on Blue Peter.
I shall drop.io it when complete :D
I have found an article saying Taku will be driving a benneton {Comment #269}
Excellent! Taku and Goodwood go together perfectly - the combination of driving high-powered single-seaters and mass interaction with fans.
what about the very big wall?
so.. shall we tell him now or when he's finished? :-)
i know i spelt it wrong :D
f1 drivers don’t usually feel the need to apologise for the rubbish racing, though do they? {Comment #403}
If they did the FIA could punish their teams under the Concorde Agreement for statements that make F1 look bad (this is aside from the more generic provision in Article 151c of the Sporting Agreement, preventing any act prejudicial to F1's interests). I doubt Max could be convinced that honesty is a good trait in a driver and a series.
what about the very big wall? {Comment #501}
Um... ...he'll cross that bridge when he gets there...
if he thinks it's a bridge, he's in serious trouble.
The bbc feature on pitstops might help you get an estimate, i am not sure if it is still online though {Comment #430}
Force India have a pitstop feature on their website (which I believe is different from the BBC one), if you can ever get it to load...
good evening :)

Hi Lou
everyone had a good day?
it’s just my way of making a mundane job, more fun. :D {Comment #461}
I like that idea :D
Aye, been quite good. Had it not been for the third rower messing up in the race, was good day.
Been some excellent tennis today.
so i've heard. i've not had much time to watch it though :( only a bit of murray this evening. stupid school and stupid homework getting in the way of Wimbledon. ;)
Am supremely jealous of the lady at work who has the week off. I think the Wimbledon fortnight should be a national holiday.
i agree,it really should. i've only caught glimpses as i walked through the common room today, but i didn't even have a lunch break due to being on the interview panel for the new head girl.
Does that mean I should be as well? I'm off to Norway tomorrow for three days though!
Just saw a tweet from Mashable that will make the Apple fans happy
http://mashable.com/2009/06/29/steve-jobs-back-as-ceo/
i kinda thought they were doing alright without him?
True, but it's nice to have him back.
It is the perfect example of why tracks should only run in one direction. Now the pit entry and exit are a disaster because they were never designed with that purpose in mind.
You dont happen to know any that are run fully in both ways?
I think they should be reversible, with the appropriate modifications to the pit lane access.
Misano used to run in one direction and then they changed it...
...Also Brands Hatch but that was a while ago...
Grrrrr....
Bloody tennis. :(
Only thing I was hoping to watch today and they've cancelled it for Crimewatch... Oh joy....
:O but it's a great match!
Erm, BBC2?
No!
It would be way too expensive to build in the safety to run in both directions. You would need run offs in both directions. Marshals posts would probably need to be in different positions. Brake markersm start lights etc all have to be re-done. it is not just a matter of telling the drivers to go the other way.
Brands ran the other way? That would be dangerous
Oh and they have some kind of rally in Germany where they run the wrong way round the Nurburgring... clip on YouTube somewhere...
Is it? Well as long as BBC2 isn't important then...
Yup - Crimewatch has taken the place of The Supersizers.
It would work on (some) ovals - I think there's an Australian one where they do/did that.
i (heart) tennis. have never known christine to be so quiet.
i say more wimbledon please.
Oh, you wanted to watch The Supersizers. Gotcha.
Won't they repeat it on another night?
This was in the early days when it was a motorcycle dirt track on roughly what is now the Indy circuit.
Rallies have used a few tracks backwards but they don't have the same safety standards and there is only one car at a time
Crimewatch should be on BBC1 but the tennis is still running.
I was feeling bad for you but if that was what you're missing, I don't anymore... Dieting programmes??
Incidentally move successful, remote control found!!
It was in the very early days - before even the Indy circuit and there was no Druids corner. See here for a link
Thanks i figurered as much, but it might be interesting if it was designed in from the start
Quiet. How can you stay quiet when there is a Brit playing?
*ducks*?
You may as well move to the naughty step before she reads that
there are some comments that should maybe stay inside your head ;) unless you find the naughty step particularly comfortable?
The repeat is normally on Sunday - tennis is on in it's place.....
Joy of joys...
No - not a dieting program... well kind of. 2 people eat the food and essentially live the live of various periods of time. They've doen the 45's, 80's, Elizabethan, victorian and all sorts of other ones.
I was imagining Paddock th other way followed by a down hill straight into Clearways. That could be very messy.
You're spoiling my big idea - run half the race one way and the other half the other. ;)
Nothing else matters if you have the remote
Very good proggie too
???
ooops.
Go to Suzuka and it does it for you?
Even numbered cars in one direction and odd numbered cars the other. No more borig races.
Yup. Sue Perkins is great. For a veggie, she eats all sorts of weird animals for the sake of our amusement. :D
I mentioned that I think all the tracks should be reversible. The next logical step is to run the race both ways round the tracks. That way the drivers will be able to keep their neck muscles symmetrical
Dont look now, but i think you've got away with it...
you cant do that due to insurance issuesss i believe
maybe mrs c is plotting some sort of revenge?.. or too caught up with the tennis.
That line judge lady that got smacked with the ball really looks like a pig....
Blooming health and safety again. Bah.
Seriously, it makes a lot of sense to keep the tracks one way - stops any confusion. Imiagine if they did this in NASCAR - turn left, turn left, turn left would suddenly become turn right, turn right, turn right. None of the drivers would be able to cope.
Harsh!, but she could really do with bigger glasses
How did she make it onto centre court then? (There's an article in the Mail* today that shows that the less attractive players get to play on the lesser courts only)
*look, it was the only available reading material in Sainsbury's coffee shop today.
Serves you right for being in a Sainsbury's Coffee shop then doesn't it? ;)
Just watching the first ever F2 race in 2009. Not sure if it's worth watching!
Why? Thought it was canny good myself
OK will continue then - just looks Sloooooooooooow!
Everything looks slow at Valencia.
I'm behind on so many series:
-Havent seen any of last year's Superleague Formula
-Haven't seen the last two rounds of A1GP
-Havent seen any F2
-Havent seen any more than round one of BTCC
-Havent seen more than two rounds of Indy
-Havent seen MotoGP from Assen yet!
They keep showing Max during the F2 coverage though!
Here's an idea.
Tennis - best of 5 sets. However if the game overruns say..2 hours? SUDDEN DEATH! :D
Make that with exploding Tennis balls and you're on! :D
The FIA would ban it on safety grounds
it's not like programs have been cancelled for golf or something boring like that!
I was thinking dart guns, but expliting tennis balls is even better!
Oi, golf is not boring.
How about electric shocks of increasing intensity through the racquet handle
Oh I'm MUCH further behind than you :-)
- IndyCar - only seen St Pete and Indy (and my blog is supposed to be biased to F1 and IRL).
- Haven't see the last 3 rounds of A1GP.
- Haven't seen any GP2.
- Haven't seen any F2 other than Valencia Race 1 which we live commented.
- Not seen any MotoGP other than Assen (just 'cos it was on and I wasn't at home).
- BTCC I've only seen Brands Hatch. WTCC and DTM nothing at all.
I'm realising how much more free time I had last year, trying to run the same commitments this year just isn't working!!
It is DULL
Its hardly worth televising though...
They tend to know that golf goes on for days... non stop.... with nothing happening...
been watching a Bond film recently? ;)
For tennis generally I would agree, particularly back when I had Eurotennis (sorry, Eurosport) and they'd pre-empt live touring cars for it.. but I can live with Wimbledon. It is only a couple of weeks per year and it helps me catch up with other stuff.
Funny, I've seen the exact same Indy rounds as you! Are the Ovals REALLY worth watching?
I forgot GP2 as well!
It's as boring as watching 22 overpaid men running round a football pitch for 90 minutes.
I'd rather watch 22 overpaid men driving round and round for 90 minutes, much more exciting.
Haven't seen that in ages. Didn't even think of it
I'm going to sulk in the corner.
course not, if you are playing it, watching it is just... indescribably dull.
It is dull to watch on telly. Very challenging to play.
Agree 100%!
that's tennis too isn't it? just back, and forth, and back, and forth. like football.
It effectivly sent a tv channel bust... now that says something about it dullness!
Usually they are - but this year, no.
Can you let me know when you go on an RU spree for GP2, I need upload credit badly :-)
*ahem*
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image028-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image027-jpg-2
but all sports can be reduced to that...
They overpriced on cricket, football and rugby to be fair.
That's awesome!
Kudos to you sir. Gonna spice them up a bit next?
Fankin' ya :D
Great stuff... but wield it with care!
I'm up to date ATM... just haven't watched!
The plan was to watch on the way down to Le Mans but the stupid ciggy charger didn't work well and I got too much hassle for watching Motorsports!
hahah :-)
Feathers? Sequens?
I was thinking colour, but heh, all will do.
What's that for?
Pitstops :P
Good job Jon. Are you planning any practise before Sunday? Local Tesco's?
Really? ;)
I meant why has he made his own?
I like this idea...
I belive he said it was for a church car park, to guide people into bays...
something tells me i need to read back through the comments...
"our church car park is smaller than the amount of people that come to the church when we let people park themselves, so we now have parking attendants who make sure everyones parking properly, and in the right order if they want to leave early (near the exit) or later (far from the exit) in case we have to double park people….anywho, its quite a mundane job and so yesterday we decided to spice it up by getting table tennis bats and directing the cars as if they were aeroplanes (like the little man standing in front of the big planes with the red bat thing)
annnnywho, everyone loved it, so i’ve decided to have some fun with it, and make an F1 style lollypop to stop cars etc etc."
Did i just quote myself? I believe i will now blow up
Was thinking something similar, havent decided yet. Shall do it tomorrow
That's an awesome idea!
I also...for any bottle boat followers out there...have stored my bottles in a cool way...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/8-jpg-2
I think your nuts.
Naturally
See, you'd never see that in Denmark - you get money for recycling so either you take them back for money or a tramp will come and steal them!
I'm looking for a place that will take them for money....but i'm going to use them first...
I'm thinking the Ferry to Denmark costs more than you'd get for the bottles.... They don't really do it here. Our bottles are made to be much more disposable because we're too useless to bring them back....
You couldn't send them here anyway as you didn't buy them here...
Just helped Mum de-weed the front of the house with Weedol, had a shower and now watching Murray while MJ plays on Spotify. Nice.
I have uploaded a excel spreadsheet so everyone feel free to use!!
i think this tennis match may kill me... either way it's going to get me in trouble with my psychology teacher.. i still have work to do.
It's the same plastic. - PET
You could just launch your boat into the north sea when you are finished with it and it will almost certainly turn up i Denmark where someone will recycle the bottles
I think I may have to blame andy murray for more things... :P
Oh my goodness, I look away for 1 minute and the idiots gotton his serve broken....
It wouldn't work because you put them in some laser scanning machine and it tells you off if you put in foreign ones :)
Flibster should be blaming the all-England club for installing lights on Centre Court. I was waiting for bad light to stop play.
how do i get back?
I can vouch for this! I've tried to put British bottles in before and it spat them out :(
A roof is un-natural!
it's a british sports event - it's meant to be rained off.
But as I said the plastic is the same, so what's the problem?
Gives the place one hell of an atmosphere though
They don't want to give you money back on bottles they can't reuse. As I said, our bottles are thinner and pretty rubbish. Bottles you get on the continent are much more sturdy and obviously designed for reuse.
They don't recycle them, they clean them and refill.
The lighting makes you believe it's still daytime.
That's ridiculous. What happens to the "foreign' bottles? They end up in landfill or wherever and not recycled. Pointless.
Also, this is the EU where goods have free passage.
How late can they go? Surely it will have to jump channel at ten for the news, but the trains must stop about 11
Yeah, didn't at Cardiff though
You can put them in a recycling bin but you can't have money back for them.
You should have tried again and said something colonial like "but they are British damit!"
Ah. That makes more sense. I wish we still did that here. I remember we used to get 5p back on every (glass) emtpty Ribena bottle.
Buy a ferry ticket with the recycling money
The lighting is amazing.
Lol, they're delaying the news.....
LPG says the new Supersizers is on iPlayer.
"BBC News will follow the tennis"
It's the same with German bottles though - when you buy them you sign a form stating that you won't claim any recycling money on them - thus you get them cheaper.
I think it's for tax reasons more than anything...
Another first!
Is that a first in British television history?
Really? Most countries cut to the news and delay the rest of the event...
How much longer can it go on for before they take a pause until tomorrow?
When I was young[er], I think during Brazil 03, they delayed Cornation Street and I thought that was the end of the tv world.
so every time you buy a bottle, you have to sign a form?
I'm sure I've seen it happen before for sports.... Football in particular many times I'm sure!!
Never for Wimbledon though obviously
Pfft, they did it all the time...
Could go on forever, maybe until one of the bulbs go out.
Hey, I was young, that was like my third F1 race and I thought Corniation Street had to be on time all the time.
The commentators were saying "up to 10pm" earlier but that doesn't seem to have happened...
Every time I go to Germany and buy a boot full of Moonshine, yes ;)
I don't think so. Besides' it's only fair, they kept interrupting a John Wayne film I was watching back in May 1980.
i'm on it...
I do believe they only did it for the "late" races in Europe, which were Brazil, Canada and US GP.
:D
Has he lost yet?
In NZ, after about a total of half an hour of adverts, they cut the movie in two for either Lotto or the News :(
Most of the time the money you're getting back for the recycled bottles is just your deposit you paid when you bought it. You pay more at the outset for it.
Gone to fifth set. No tiebreaks in the last set at Wimbledon either.
He will not lose at Wimbledon this year.
I remember in dubai in the early 90's there was only 1 english language channel available, they were showing a film, cut to the news, then went off air for the night.
I think i was 6 or 7 and i was very upset...
there was a slightly more importent reason that particular day.
Just 3 more games...
I dont think this match is doing jenson's sports personality of the year campaign any good...
Those people in the crowd are gonna be stuck out there for hours.... The tube gets so infrequent at this time of night....
The main word in there is Personality...
Does Murray have one?
John Lennon?
No reason needed in NZ!
(Where's Amy, BTW?)
We need a good "comeback drive" or another Vettel-style domination from him this season.
But Zara Phillips won it because she looked pretty on a horse... ;)
Iranian Embassy seige.
:D
I am sure the British Press will be cutting off the head of the tall poppy by this time next year...
Damn... Good point.
And Mansell has won it twice!
That would have made for an excellent movie!
he didnt look pretty on a horse
Asleep. I think she is lying. She probably went for more ice cream and pizza but told us she was slwwping
But a Prancing one on the other hand...
:D
Still didn't look that pretty
Maybe if he had been kicked by a horse
1st time: Plucky British loser
2nd time: ...came good and won
Ever since - everyone hates him.
Sorry, I can't stand that - we love him for winning and hate him for whinging :(
I thought he had...
Serves you right for being in a Sainsbury’s Coffee shop then doesn’t it? {Comment #565}
To be fair, they do have good fish and chips (can't comment on the coffee because I don't drink anyone's coffee).
Its the circle of life....
Hakudamatata
I never loved him. Thought he was a dreary brummie.
All right then - you can't beat good fish and chips of course!
Strangely enough, Meat Pies, Sausage Rolls and Fish and Chips do not exist in Denmark!
Probably not the best time to raise this but the Iceman's doing the WRC
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76623
Hope the link works. I'm off to Mars.
Like Kubica...with less wins
Winning anything mainstream is so rare for British people that we need to invent odd sports like curling to excel at....
How do they not have fish and chips!
Too much bacon?
So you never cheered for him or wanted him to win even though he was your countryman?
We aren't really that good at that.
Or award the Personality prize to runners-up.
OMG, how can you live without sausage rolls? They are truly epic.
...and peddlers-up ;)
It's a special British kind of excellence
Sounds like ITV.
The chocolate people or the planet?
Well, they have crumbed fish and eat loads of chips, but they are never combined!
Nope.
Has Murray given up?
Is he desperate to watch newsnight?
Did he just get broken again?? We really are gonna be here all night....
http://www.petitiononline.com/fofa01/petition.html
I meant this, Mein Gott, posting links must be the most difficult thing in the world!
Are they insane?
Someone could make a lot of money out of this...
I can't believe that. I just can't!
Never liked him. Even when he was at Lotus - a lot of the mechanics didn't like him either.
Thank you, F1 God!
Sign the petition if you feel like it. Now I'm really off.
*covers eyes*
this is too close :(
They have these things called 'Sausage horns' which are hot dogs that are wrapped in bread dough and baked in the oven. They're lovely!
Pretzell dog?
I love those!
Ooooh, those sound tasty.
Omg I may actually have a heart attack.... Sooo close... Xxx
No mechanic has ever liked him - even he alludes to that in his biography.
Apparently Frank Williams rates him pretty highly in his list of drivers...
Is christine still alive?
maybe? Imagine a warm bread roll with a sausage inside it...
that's not true? in the williams docu on drop.io, frank was basically forced to hire hill because all the mechanics were upset about nige leaving.
:)
I think he should call for a trainer, he seems to have stopped paying attention...
He dosent do pressure does he...
Murray looks shattered!
Did he win? I'm confused
So Mansell is to motor racing what William Shatner is to acting?
I dont do pressure!!
*hides behind couch* :(
I heard that but then I also heard there were a lot of upset mechanics because Frank re-hired Nige in 1991 and they weren't keen on him?
No there's a rarity. A F1 related book I don't want to read.
ahaha I'm so nervous I'm forgetting my iPod is not a phone.... And I'm not texting. Lol sorry about the random 'x's lol
Now there's a rarity even...
I don't think you're under as much pressure as he is ;)
Haha, di you see conan jump on the desk out of frustration with him? twas great :D
It's still going on.... It's pretty much a draw!
Shatner... Acts?
That is a good point :D
aah you do that think my sister does of ending very message with x's :-)
think? thing!
Actually his autobiographies are very good. A real got-no-money-yet-I-got-to-the-top kinda story...
it depends who it is to if they get them or not :P
Is there a pressure release valve down there?
This is nowhere near as bad as the cricket!
When I was young[er], I think during Brazil 03, they delayed Cornation Street and I thought that was the end of the tv world. {Comment #655}
I remember that! 13.2 million people saw the end of that race, making it the most-seen part of any F1 race on British television since 2000 - which was a bit of a problem. The Coronation Street viewers would have been excused for thinking that their favourite soap was doing a special edition in the Highlands, given the farce at the end...
Well, I say acting, I mean reciting the lines from the script but with added ...punctuation.
its an automatic thing now. Just need to remember iPod touch is not a phone, and I'm not texting.
Oh happy now. Supersizers appears to be on iPlayer - before it's been shown on the TV. :D
Here BBC - have a big D'OH! on me
Next you'll say that he sings too...
He's bloody good in Boston Legal though...
Well, I say singing...
But it's more like reading the lines with added punctuation? ;)
Anyone else think a powercut in the wider wimbledon area could be entertaining about now?
I'm going to laugh so hard if he loses, oh i love the British...oh wait, he's scottish now ;)
A riot would ensue!!
Well I'm exhausted just watching this match ....
i don't even like tennis! madness.
But the precious Air Maintenance....
hahaha :D
That would be fantastic. :D
Don't mess this up andy you damned... thing.
I cant even think of a thing to thing him with!!!
THING
Only if he loses. That's the law - British when winning, Scottish when crashing out on the first lap.
i may need an excuse as to why I haven't finished my psychology homework....
:D
tennis has crashes?
How about...
Andy murray borked my branes.
I think our system is the best in thw world, do other countries operate like that?
What must I not mess up?
Did you see Haas/Llodra?
4 more points. Just 4 more points...
Bit of emotion there from Murray...
Something!!
:)
No but I said something about it on F1NGers a few months back.
Whenever someone loses at tennis they always "Crash Out" according to the headlines.
NO. He didn't crash out.
He tried to hit a ball with a stick and he missed.
oooh yes. that was so cool, i loved that the ball boys/girls played :) it made me happy
Carl Haas plays tennis?
When was it ever that simple?
:D
I wonder what tommorows daily post will say?
something like : ZOMG did you see the tennis... formula 1 things may have happened too
Tennis? Simple?
That was certainly a crash!
Murray is currently British
That's Cricket. Or Golf.
ssssssshhhhhhhh!!!!!! Lol
:D
Something happend in F1 yesterday, but something even better happened in the tennis.
Which reminds me, I had a speedway blog post to write up tonight, and I forgot. Damn you Murray.
You speak too soon!! Don't jinx it!!
Not that it bothers me, I'm Scottish. I'm stuck with him either way.
A stick with a net on it, then.
I think Formula 1 needs more tennis rackets
I remember a player taking a dive over the net as there was no way he could stop without running into it after a particularly strenuous volley.
Match point...
Match Point!!! *hides behind pillows, couches, walls, and the UK*
He better win the damn thing after this match
YEEEEEEESS!!!!
YES! YES YES YES! :D
Awwww crap.
are they using hawkeye to play the crowds? x-factor style pause right there.
Quick question: If you know the British media are idiots, why pay any attention to their stereotypes?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8117785.stm
FAAAAAAAN-TASTIC! :D
All right then – you can’t beat good fish and chips of course! {Comment #697}
To further confuse the issue, the best fish and chips where I live is done at a local Chinese takeaway...
Yeeessssssssss!!!!!!!!!
tis fun ;)
Thank god for that.
well we can do that again....
Fair enough.
We dont need a final anymore, lets just finish the tournament now
What now?
he is dead....
You don't think there are enough rackets in F1?
Least he's not English, otherwise he would somehow manage to lose on penalties.
Awwwwwww this match has made my day :)
But now we can hit people causing it
I am going to inerview you... Here is your answer...
you have Photoshop open don't you? :p
:D
You know me too well :D
Some people have made a career out of it. Messrs Clarkson, Hammond and May
Ah, I knew there was a reason I didn't watch anymore.
that, coupled with the fact they've been making the same show for 8 years?
You find a formula and stick to it.
Works allright for American TV...
that was tiring... i should have had a beer
I've just wondered though, we used to watch all sorts of stuff on TV back in the day which hasn't aged well. Do you think that we'll look back on Top Gear in 20 years with affection or not?
i should have another.
Well done Andy!
(Or at least I think he's won given the comments)
write this number on your hand...
012128 87225
then have another
Thanks. :)
:P
Has Christine seen this?
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-06/27/content_11609580.htm
Elephants painted like pandas.
Judging by the way we will have to change our driving habits, I'd say not too well!
woah!
that screws with my mind
I am tempted but i drank more than i think ever have before on Saturday and it still hurts
Don't forget to write you name on the other hand. Oh wait...
that's cruel...
Why? Have you never read Elmer?
I do not approve.
No. It is starting to age already. It is now predictable and there were complaints about aspects of it here on Sunday night which has never happened before.
They are just white jackets, you should hear what hannibal did with them...
Someone has had beer then
It's really predictable. I know their races are staged to be close, but the way they shoot them, you can tell who's "won" from about 10 mins before the end. They always collapse into the bar to find the other one in there with the pint....
Even if they were painted like that to celebrate the birth of a panda in the zoo?
Unless that panda is coming in my direction, then not really.
so... maybe the elephants didn't want to wear any type of jackets... i don't like it at all :( it makes me sad.
Elmer is not real, this is, sadly :(
Apparently the universe imploded today and noone noticed...
The ONE show on BBC2
It's simpler that that - Clarkson must win more often than not.
But you probably ride a horse, walk a dog, keep a fish in a tank or a bird in a cage right? Do you spay or neuter your pets?
the problems began for me, when they realised they didn't have enough new guests for the "reasonably priced car" bit. so they bought a different car and invited the same guests back again.
if ever there was a time to think up a new challenge...
No, no, no, no, not this conversation again. NO.
Wasn't the tennis good?
At least Tiff Needell isn't on the progam anymore. He's not nice :(
I am sure i would have noticed it the universe imploded. Unless the next big bang was a lot faster than the last one
tennis podcast?
No.
OK it was pretty exciting.
*Ahem* apparently it was ... but I am watching MotoGP.
I blame the Pandas BTW...
And yet there are so many people who haven't been on. Must have had a fair few refusals.
I want to know why they suddenly decided to have two drivers for that segment. It's too weird now!
I hadn't really noticed that tbh! But now you mention it.... They had a fair few new ones when Jonathan Ross was on the naughty step though.
For MotoGP? I dunno, I don't think they have the right balance for that kind of thing.
Then they started inviting guests in pairs to generate some rivalry but that was quietly dropped.
it's not for everyone. hence the reason to think up something original.
they're just wasting our licence fee now.
nope to all of those. have never riden a horse in my life. don't have a dog (although some dogs are bread as pets mostly), not got a fish, or even a bird.
:D
No wonder Valentino Rossi always wins
ok :)
twas amazing :D i'm sad i wont get to watch a lot tomorrow now.
Get through the guests twice as quickly.... That was two weeks worth of rivalry wasted all at once. The last episode of Top Gear I watched was when they went to the North Pole. I'm not the person to talk about this really.
Hmmm... don't they carry their young? Their Centre of gravity must be pretty good...
That portion should have been dumped years ago.
that was the last one i enjoyed... if that helps?
They do like hanging upside down in trees for some reason, as well. They must have a good sense of where they are.
Oh there's a whole heap of stuff on the Beeb I'd say that about before we got as far as TG.
Which season is that because I am just starting the one before the latest...
I say, the winter Olympics was the best and it was mostly downhill from there. Africa was right up there, and the rest I can live without.
yup, fair point. they are pocketing the cash and laughing though.
Are we still talking about MotoGP?
So you missed Clarkson being completely miserable and suffering in Vietnam?
So funny. :D
Hmmmm I'm not sure. Lord Clarkson must get paid a fair amount!
I enjoyed the first one of this season. But that was only because they drove through North Northumberland and I can say I live in the best part of the world.
That would be good for MotoGP... can they hang one leg out when balancing like Rossi does during braking?
Not sure, may have been standalone. Wikipedia has an episode guide.
You just defined JC's career right there...
Hmm, this I am not sure about.
lemmie guess... they picked on james, because he insisted on reading the map. and then they hid the little one's chariot?
Painted offensive words on it perhaps? Put something foul smelling in James' car?
They did change the rules as well. Liana laps were recorded as the fastest driven by the "star". Lacetti laps are 5 practice laps and then one timed one. This accounts for the relatively poor performances by Steve Coogan and Jimmy Carr compared to their Liana laps.
they had funny hats too
James got off very lightly.
Clarkson got them lost
They all had to bike 1000 miles across Vietnam - so Clarkson was really unhappy with that. :D
I know they must have strutted around wearing a US flag at some point.... How could they resist that one. Then probably made fun of the fact that Hammond was the right height to live there....
I should write this stuff. I could be rich.
American bike with Born in the USA in the background. Like the Beetle in the African Special
I wonder if pandas are related to bats?
thing is. from that description, i can imagine the whole show in my head.
what's the pointing in wasting an hour watching?
No need to do that, just tell the danes about fish and chips
The "forfeit" bike (if their own one broke down completely) was a Harley Davidson painted with stars and stripes and a flag plus a loudspeaker blaring out "Born in the USA"
Their bikes kept breaking down, so they had a backup bike for the next person to break down irrepairably.
American style chopper, painted in the stars and stripes with the stereo blaring out Born in the USA.
More his eating habits.
beetle-esque.
Too easy!!
Sunday Night Hangover Recovery
:D
You get to see Clarkson falling off a motorbike.
the cinematography is amazing, and although predictable at times it's still pretty funny and a nice thing to watch on a sunday evening (besides the debrief of course). plus where else do you get to see amazing super cars on track and in random very lovely places?
Except the Beetle is the best car to drive across Africa. Not that I'm biased in any way...
Christine, I know you've no doubt been wondering but did you realise just how much you missed out on f1 before you started watching, when we had no politics but rather.... something else??
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/forten-jpg
I think it was just bad timing myself :P
How does a Panda look in a fireproof suit and helmet? Could their feet operate a gear lever selector?
and every car advertisement made in he past 3 years has copied that style lock, stock and barrel.
Hehehe.
Loving the McEnroe hair on Mika :D
That was worth the hour on it's own. :D
Vietnam was an hour and 15minutes I think...
That kind of comment normally leads to suggestions that you should start a blog
It's so easy to do, just put a graduated filter in front of the lens. The Vietnam film was good, the African and Polar adventures are better.
I don't watch it as a car show - because, well it isn't.
It's entertainment now rather than factual.
True, but they do go to some amazing backdrops.
If they start doing that tilt-shift stuff i will be gone though
Speaking of people who need a blog Steven... ;)
meh. i still think it's amazing ;)
Not if I'm threatening to rehash tired jokes that could be on Top Gear. I don't think Christine wants to hear that....
Thanks Andy - The Polar one was a standalone so I never caught it... Not sure if it was on NZ TV...
The point is there is a lot of good stuff in there but it needs a shake up again. Top Gear has changed repeatedly over its lige and it is time to take the juvenils stuff out of it now and that means Clarkson as to go.
i don't watch it for facts... i can look those up on the internet :D
that would certainly help. the script writers need ditching too.
No politics. When? 1920s?
5th Gear is for facts and Top Gear is for a laugh.
Result: 5G is dry and boring. TG is fun.
Even if Clarkson likes to play up his stereotypes and people take him literally..
Borrowed it on Bluray - looked absolutely superb. BBC certainly know how to produce stuffin HD.
Id give them ne last season after this one... then rest the show for 3 years and brink it back with a different look and new presenters
Seeing as one of those is Richard Porter of Evo, Sniff Petrol and Gareth Jones On Speed I think he can stay :)
Yep that picture was infact in some kind of paradox taken in the 1920s when the grass was green and the cars were pretty. Oh won't you please take me home :(
i suspect he may be the problem :(
You do remember what happened the last time they got rid of Clarkson?
Top gear stopped shortly afterwards as no-one watched it.
I have no opinions on nuffing
The problem isn't that people take him seriously.... It'd almost be bearable if he meant what he was saying, but he's just like an attention seeking kid playing up for laughs....
nope.
I think clarkson fled from a sinking ship rather than torpedoing it with his departure
the problem also is... it's the same laughs.
The BBC eventually ditched it and it became Fifth Gear.
Getting rid of Clarkson would free up the script writers. So long as you have someone like him who has to be seen as superior the show is predictable.
Then they run out of jokes and ooooh lets smash up a caravan.....
they have vb-h :)
He's rather amusing though...
Looking after your mates?
Do they?
Don't remember seeing her at all on tonights 5th gear
we don't actually have a tv... so unless it's on iplayer...
they used to though.
Hardly. I didn't meet him anyway. I just find the Sniff and GJOS very funny!
Last time I looked they had the greasy car salesman and the oh-so-smug Jason Potato (who for some reason is fan-favourite trackside at BTCC)
That never did Dad's Army or 'Allo, 'Allo any harm. That's what Top Gear has become - a Sit-Com. It's the modern equivalent of Till Death Do Us Part with Clarkson as the Alf Garnett character.
What?
The smarmy one looks like my old head teacher when I was at school
i'll take your word on that. i don't get sniff, never read evo and only downloaded gjos because you were on it!
we had this discussion a while back. there is currently a tv in the house, but it's not connected and hasn't been used since before xmas. as soon as we have time to visit the tip, it'll be gone.
There are some great F1 jokes on Sniff though - and the car ads...
Except it's rambling on longer than either of them ever did!
you don't use any other on demand services?
i've tried. but to me mostly it comes across as very bitter. just not my sense of humour i guess.
Must go now, had fun lurking during that conversation. Last exam tomorrow afternoon until November. WooHoo.
Night all.
I've downloaded a few older podcasts to give it a chance, haven't started yet though. I get the feeling I might not stay with it long but we'll see.
I don't get Evo because I don't see the point and Sniff these days is just a lot of recycled in-jokes (it could be a LOT better if he had the time for it).
i don't, no. christine did look at 4od the other day, but i've no idea what the conclusion was?
night R.G and good luck!
best of luck rg.
TV is crap these days innnit. Most stuff worth watching is available on the net anyways. Every time I try and get into a program I just get bored of it.
I can't believe how many channels you guys in the UK have on Sky - how do you find something to watch? You'd end up always checking the other channels just to make sure you're not missing something better!
good luck!
Do you guys have unlimited bandwidth in the UK?
yup. although it's not very fast. 2 and something mb, i think?
Not really.
A couple of ISP's do have high limits *500gb/month* but other than that they all have restrictions
Good luck RG
Fast enough for Video though?
Do you mean bandwidth as in speed or capped downloads?
Speed is supposed to be 8meg for many (but isn't), there are caps unless you pay the top whack (I do).
no idea. haven't seen sky since the '90's.
Yeah that's about what I get, but only 30GB per month at the moment.
ours doesn't?
Depends on your package. Mine's just "fair usage" a lot of them have download limits though. I presume that's what you mean.
i certainly don't :( all of a sudden these last few weeks i've not had much bandwidth at all... streaming iplayer video has been useless. :( i need to ring orange when i get the chance cause it's just a little bit stupid...
This is true, was watching an out take clip the other day where Andy Milman was saying that he had no idea how many shows they'd made. He wanted to do something special for the 100th episode only to find out he'd missed it.
4OD has some advantages over the iplayer. They put lots of old programs up. So instead of just the last week's there are complete series od programs.
I use digiguide - select the channels I use *not Living TV and all that other guff* and then flip through occasionally looking for interesting stuff
Every time I go to Dads I wonder the same thing! There are hundreds of channels but between the good ones are tens of channels of utter garbage, so you are scrolling through page after page...
What about Be*
more than. we stream x3 live video streams during a race. i have the bbc feed, christine has the same but with 5live commentary and i also run the onboard lap too.
Depends how busy it is.
100 shows - Thats only 4 seasons in the USA
I have no limts on downloads
yikes! yeah, we many times more than that.
I should have said data cap. If mine was unlimited I would probably never watch TV either.
2MB is plenty for most small streaming video
After about a week you realise you cant possibly be missing anything, and you have more things to avoid than anything
Don't remind me of this! Now I'm gonna spend my night watching Father Ted....
Very high limit. Moved one of my connections over to them - very good so far.
that has some appeal. i recall christine saying it worked on the mac too. may check it out later.
I don't have any restriction on mine with Orange
Australia really sucks for data caps compared to most other "first world" countries
Your internet won't let you stream video? I'd go mental.... I often watch a few things at once.
There are a lot of repeats too. A LOT.
It works for the most part but being in a fairly rural town means it has funny periods of slowness.
Other than their supplied router, which doesn't work properly under heavy load and their somewhat unreliable DNS servers they are brilliant. The problems are easily solved by using a different router and external DNS servers.
Orange isn't unlimited.
IIRC more than 40gb a month and you drop to a 512kb connection...
Remind Christine that's like the future scene in BTTF2 with McFly's son watching TV on multiple channels ;)
using a netgear something or other with Wireless N, and OpenDNS until I set up my own DNS server internally
quote me a figure?
*thinks* i really hope that isn't what's happened to me...
:P
There isn't one - it's subject to "fair and acceptable usage policy"
I sat and watched every episode of Green Wing over about three nights. A couple of months ago they put up another 4000 hours of stuff including every episode of Drop the Dead Donkey. I am tempted to watch that but it may be one of those things that was fabulous in its day but because it was so topical it is not funny now.
that's what i thought. as are most in the uk, right?
You could effectively stream all 5 terrestrial channels at once on your laptop, that way you don't effectively miss anything! :D
Yay Green Wing!
Apart from Dave, Sky One, Virgin One, Eurosport, CBBC, Cbeebies, etc.
You can now watch it in the browser which you couldn't before. I haven't been near it recently but the menus and search needed a massive overhaul the last time I looked.
Mine certainly is
next door neighbour has been streaming hidef video for a month and hasn't hit it.
380gb last time we talked - and he hasn't been throttled yet.
i'd be more likely to buy that on itunes, just so i could watch on the ipod touch when convenient.
so no limit at all then?
I had IRL and baseball on at the same time on Saturday night as well as a few other things like doohickey etc
My Train journey is approx. 1 hr. Makes most programs very convenient!
*falls over*
That's about my whole year's allowance
There's enough non-topical stuff to make it watchable.
Seems ok. I'm only up to 22gb so far...
Lightweight.. ;)
Mine is unlimited. Absolutely and totally without limit.
that's basically what we've been doing with C4 programmes until now.
I don't understand that at all... If I wanted to watch something I'd watch it on a telly. That's why I've got an S-VIDEO cable running from my gfx card to my telly.
as i hope is ours. otherwise no live show!
a) you don't get to choose when it's on.
b) you can't watch it on the move.
c) you can't pause it to get beer.
d) you have to watch the adverts.
How can you live comment with a telly though? I don't understand - where do you plug in the keyboard?
You can get it for nothing on your Mac though
no no, I mean streaming. I put the streaming on the telly with the S-VIDEO.
That just makes me want to watch it.
oh i see. our monitors are much higher resolution than our pal tv.
See the court case over it - it's not unlimited.
They've added a little bit of text to the internet homepage... it's quite important.
Fair use terms apply.
Commenting remains on the PC monitor.
my monitor is as well, but it is smaller than the tv. if I don't want to comment on anything I'll use the monitor.
You can use a ps3 i think... hang on a miniute
So why not run split screen like you did for Sebring?
that's just being picky.
in answer to paul's question, none of our broadband connections are limited, right?
you've never hit a limit, we've never hit a limit, your friend has downloaded the entire internet twice and still never hit a limit.
we have unlimited broadband... in the spirit of the rules at least ;)
I am on the internet for hours every day and watch a lot of video. Some times 2 or three sporting events running at the same time and never had any kind of problem.
Orange do two separate packages.
I am! The TV is set up as the second monitor, that's how I had it for Sebring.
you probably just need a bigger monitor. then you can ditch your tv too.
Many companies do have strict and set limits though! It's just that none of us are daft enough to go for them....
I feel a Tremayne (sp?) coming on
what I want is a second monitor. then I can ditch the tv
Taken direct from their FUP.
Does that sound unlimited?
they must be really cheap ones?
I wish no one had mentioned 4OD now.
you just said that you have never hit the limit?
true of false?
The 24" seems large enough for Doohickey and another 4x3 browser window/video window...
Sorry - that whole post wasn't meant to be in bold...
I have no idea what happened there. :D
It's the penultimate paragraph that was meant to be emboldened.
Sounds like a good setup then...
That's the point though - I don't want a 4x3 video window
Gosh, I may have started an argument. ;-)
oops
Thats the FUP for Orange.
I hit the limit for Eclipse for about 3 straight months, which is why I've gone to Be
All I can say is I have never had any sign of my bandwidth being in any way restricted
nah. i totally see flibsters point. but nothing in life is unlimited. for any normal person, the uk essentially has unlimited broadband.
sadly we don't have fast broadband. you have to go to finland for that.
*runs away quickly from technical conversation she does not fully understand *
It's also not very specific.... It's just saying don't take the absolute michael and we can all leave each other be. It even tells you you're allowed to do illegal things as long as it's not between 6 and 12. Plus I think that's on about leaving streaming going then falling asleep, for a month, and the like....
When I was on a lower package with BT (waits for sniggers from techies)... they charged me money for going over the limit, instead of throttling the speed. After a few months they said they might cut me off, so I upgraded.
oops.
so... erm... tennis.
Ah well, just remember us if you feel under-internetted
Doesn't have to be - I am running doohickey and a widescreen on the right - just not filling up the whole monitor...
For the moment anyway.
*looks at 108mb down and 54mb up connection...notices that it's offline for the 7th day running*
we shall do. when we toss the tv into the tip.
It works from a ps3, but only the mobile version...
hehe
*leans back and sticks Wall-e in the bluray player...*
Mmmmm... 60" goodness... :D
ace. i'll add it to the list ;)
It's pretty simple really, the more you use your Internet connection, the closer you get to your monthly bandwidth limit. Some ISPs have higher limits than others. My ISP chooses to make their limit very high indeed.
Meanwhile, the word Unlimited is being redefined.
Anyone tried on the Wii browser?
hehehe all i know about my internet is that one day it was fine, the next iplayer is telling me it can't play the program because of bandwidth issues :( i feel i may have hit that limit Flibster was talking about with orange...
Hahaha you obviously can't see how much jargon you just used there....
giggles. doohickey no work. not sure about mobile?
Unlimited = Do what you want - withing reason - outside of business hours...
If mobile worked on my phone then it can work on anything!
I'll give it a go tomorrow when the other half has left for London. ;)
ours:
do what you want - with in reason
I see no Jargon.
:D
This has been very interesting. I hate our telcos even more now.
you work for a computer company...
btw people are trying to convince to me replace the tv with a projector, because they've got them... i say they are really nice for films, less so for general telly-watching
Im just updating my firmware It might improve the browser, i will give it another go when its done :D
i remember something about that on the gadget show once...
No, the word computer was removed from the company name.
there is a wii browser?...
Gimme 5 and I'll tell ya
Don't buy one as a telly - the lamps typically last for 2-3000 hours when your TV typically lasts from 8-12000 hours... a very expensive idea!
oooops!
you work for a technical lifestyle company?
Yup, you can get it off the Wii Shop. It costs though.
Yup.
Based on Opera - iPlayer works nicely.
:D hahahahahahah
It's a version of Opera that costs 500 Wii Points... Apparently it's not very good but you can run iPlayer on it...
Not if you got it before June 2007 iirc - it was beta and free.
I wasn't having a go, I'm just saying that if the conversation wasn't followed up to that point using the same words to repeat it probably isn't the way to go ;)
You have to pay for the browser!?
I cant get mine online... no wifi
That's better :)
it does?... you shouldn't have told me that, my summer holidays will end before they have begun..
You can get a kit that connects it with a cable. Some games and channels etc require internet access to get the most out of them so I reccomend it...
Hulu ended its ps3 compatibility the other day, apparently the networks didnt like the competition
phew! i coulda said:
you work for the best company... in the world?
it does. :D
I ditched the wireless connection as it was unreliable. Just got a usb/ethernet adaptor cheap that works great.
Also - with the latest firmware - usb keyboards work in the wii too. ;)
I dont really use it to be honest, just a bit of snowboarding on the balace board. i really got it to keep someone else happy
The wireless on the Wii is terrible. I've just tried to connect and it can't find it, go to re-input my key, I think.
sssshhhh!!! it's going to be a warm summer... i don't want to be purely white/ looking like i've never seen the sun, as usual...
You still after that new Macbook Pro? ;)
1) Invite some friends over
2) Get drunk
3) Play Wii
It's awesome! I recommend Hula hoops on Wii Fit and the Tennis of COurse ;)
Speaking of which, are we all about ready to look at a Mario Kart Wii tourney again?
Its still a no go, but its nice to know the mobile version is there in in an emergancy
Sometimes leaving the Wii on for a few minutes allows it to wake up and connect...
???
CRT Tan! :D
My normal state. I'm naturally pale blue - I sunbathe to go white. :D
:P
i want to buy the new grand slam game...
come summer holidays i'm up for it.
Get an extension cable and take your wii outside
hahah :D
ooh good idea
but i could play real tennis...
I thought you were from Norfolk, not Scotland.
That is a traditional Scottish joke.
When is that for all you guys with exams etc? That's what I've been waiting for...
I dont trust my friends to mix wii + drunkeneess here... far too much valuable furniture!!!
Not to mention my downstairs neighbours object to me sneezing let alone rioting!
my last day of term is Sat 11th July. i've finished my exams, but still have school. how unfair.
I lived surrounded by fields and suffered badly with heyfever.
Luckilly I had a Spectrum, C16, C64, Amiga(s) and many other toys to keep me occupied.
yep!
OK well we should look at Mid-July then with maybe some warm-ups before then? I'll update the Wiki soon asking what days and times would be good?
Yay Spectrum
Yeah I went back to the Wii menu and did a connection test, and it worked!
now that is a strange game, I really must try it one day.
Boo for not having an Atari ST!
Something for just before you move out...
sounds good to me :)
My building policy seems to be make as much noise as possible...
Its my family's place unfortunalty...
I did, shortly, changed it for an Amiga. :D
What, no BBC micro?
I suspect you are the anti-matter version of myself!
I've still got mine. It worked the last time I tried it out.
I live in a very annoying area. We dont even have a pub. On the plus side if i dont see a car which is worth over 100K it has been an odd day
I can see comments on Realtime Mobile on the Wii :-)
Can't post anything because I've not charged the batteries for 3 months.
Same here - but I use an emulator now...
You live in Hollywood?
No. :(
Had the homebuild version... 8O
yay! and boo!
Is that in the Middle East?
No Surrey, not too far from Mclaren.
In Dubai the cars had to be worth over 300K
We had a network of BBCs at school, if you can believe that. "we" ran the network because the teachers couldn't work them out.
I've been a bit busy to use it :-)
btw, I was checking my router settings. it claims the line speed is 54Mbps! I never get anything remotely near that, but when the browsing is dodgy the BT Vision IPTV works. Except when it doesn't.
And horribly modified ;)
54mbps is the wireless connection speed - won't be you line speed.
Look for something like Sync speed
oops wrong thread, but it works
Okay. I found this under DSL Connection:
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,304
Sounds more like it.
448kbps upload and 6304kbps download.
So in reality...
56Kb upload and 788Kb download.
Speaking of tennis, I'm being challenged by a co worker to ping pong....for the shift championship
6meg isn't too shabby really...
Tsk - you mean 56kB and 788kB.
Technically it should be kibibytes - which are KiB...
If you want Kilobytes then it's kB
Kebab bites?
But no one else apart from you and I would know that (or care).
The joy of having Si units and IT units not matching up.
Kibibytes for 1024 - the proper value for IT
Kilobytes for 1000 - the value HDD manufactures use to overstate their HDD sizes...
That looks like a lot of work for nothing...
surely the more tech advances the sillier this discrepancy will get?
you could say the same about your correct to pat... ;)
Yup.
It's already bad enough with Gigabytes!
I was correcting Flibster for using kb to denote kilobits and kb to denote kilobytes in the same post.
You have a point though, I really should get out more.
ahh. fair do's.
outside = bad.
even wimbledon agrees.
The same guy who wants me to get a projector is trying to flog me a motherboard. So if I'm not here for a few days I've tried to install it and it went wrong.
Seriously, using a Projector as a TV is a bad idea!
are you best friends with del boy?
Yes. This is one of the reasons why my 160GB hard drive only has 149.05GB capacity (the rest is file system overhead).
:D
That's what I said. I became convinced when this other guy we know, he switched his projector off and then said we had to wait 15 minutes for it to cool down before it would come on again. I said..." so this is better than a tv??"
Plus the reduced life of the bulbs... which cost almost as much as a new machine to replace!
apparently so :-)
he likes upgrading. a lot. he's also the IT manager at a school so he gets stuff frequently..
I'm waiting for the pico projector that uses "LASERs". Tiny package, focus-free and relatively cheap, plus no bulbs to break.
Howdy!
I have a question for any WRC fans out there. Is that series nearly dead? I heard that alot of the manufacturers were pulling out. We haven't had WRC coverage in the US for at least 3 yrs
Morning, Joe. It could actually be near death - if the rival series IRC got more TV coverage. But since it's stuck on Eurosport, most people are stuck with WRC. Most major TV networks only cover WRC in the news too, leaving out IRC.
Most of the manufacturers have already gone. There is only Citroen and Ford left and Ford are not that good. They need to chamge the technical regulations to find a way to get new manufacturers in.
It seems to me that costs can't be that great, compared to F1 or Prototype racing. But I guess the traveling and being part of the FIA will put a damper on anything
But hey, Loeb's been crashing a lot lately - their lead in the championship is almost gone, I think. It certainly makes the championship competitive again, and make Ford look better than they are.
We used to get the 1.5 hr summary shows of the Rallys on Speed during the off season. IT was great to watch that on the stationary bike. I do miss WRC. Oh, well. Any significant F1 news today?
Nothing of real interest - other than JA discussing the BBC F1 Mole's sponsorship rumors.
Does that sound unlimited? {Comment #1041}
What they mean is that you can download as much data as you like (which is what the headline limits mean), they just want you to be careful when you do large files. A definition of "large" would have been useful, though. (Incidentally, they're not endorsing illegal activity, since it is possible to use file-sharing services and download movies legally, at least in theory).
For the record, I have a limited connection, but the limit is so high I don't go near it...
