In my research for daily facts and figures I have come across the best one ever. From the people's encylopedia, today is the day in 1853 when a dinner party was held inside the Iguanadon in Crystal Palace Park. We knew this! Mr Giggles took us to see those dinosaurs and told us that fact! In your face, Wikipedia! Eh-hem, here are some more F1 related things:
- I posted the Best of Debrief show yesterday - 2009 in Audio. It's a great trip through memory lane - the entire season crushed down into a twenty minute show with the best bits picked out by you guys. Thanks for all your submissions, and for the motivation to get the show complete. Couldn't have done it without you all.
- I'm contemplating the Best of Sidepodradio now, so if you have thoughts about what should go in that show, I am all ears. Simply post them in this thread and tag them #sidepodradio so I can pick them up later. Best of shows are hard work, but they are always worth it in the end!
- Mr C also wrote a brief update on some of the things we've been doing behind the scenes on the website. The graph included in that post is pretty cool, showing how much performance has improved since we started fiddling, and, well, basically stripping out Wordpress. Now things are so snappy round here, it's time to look at new stuff. Yay!
That should do it for now, let us know what you're up to and whether you have tired of your Christmas presents already. I'll see you in the comments.
hello!
You were right!
Ah, there it is
yay. sidepodscheduler is fixed.
if not in an ever so slightly lackadaisical way.
Fixed, or slightly less broken?
it'll do :)
Exactly. If it works, don't touch it, is always a good start point.
Anyone who is looking for reminders of sidepodradio to pick out highlights for Christine should start with the wiki page. Loads of info and links.

we're off to watch billy idiot. back in an hour.
(ish andy, ish)
:D byeee
hehe have fun!
i'm starting to think Mr C and the late night commenters are a bad influence on Christine, she's normally sleeping by midnight. She'll be leaving notes in the comments for mr c to be quiet when he wakes up in the morning soon! :)
Amended
:D
you cant blame me for being in the wrong timezone!
We can have a go, surely? :)
you should move to a proper timezone!
This Mac rap is stoopid but very funny
But isn't all the best code?
hehe :) speaking of your timezone, when i was reading your blog earlier i got all confused about the date, then suddenly realised your in a different time zone. For a moment i thought i'd lost a day! :)
You need to stop studying history and start studying geography
I will never be able to take someone telling me all the advantages of Mac over PC seriously again...
Evening everyone :)
Hi ALex
Hey Alex
You're surfing late
very on topic for this evening with the capital L there. In a way that is almost impossible to explain.
Unfortunate habitual typing error for me
I also do that a lot
indeedy doody. About to head to bed but thought I best say hello.
AL or the second letter of a capitalized word?
The second capital. Seems to happen all the time.
mr c has a solution
Don't use caps
indeed. And on that bombshell.
Good night!
Tutty Bye
Good night
oi! i got an A for my georgraphy GCSE i'll have you know :P hehe i figure i'll learn more about geography when i travel with the f1 circus ;)
colouring?
hi and bye giggles :)
geography = colouring?
we spent years annoying my brother telling him he did a degree in colouring
ahhhhhh :D
*ahem*
it's not finished, i'd like to point out.
Jon, is there ever a point where you are NOT constructing something obscure? :)
umm.
No
Thought not
Is the Eiffel Tower obscure?
In gingerbread, yes!
It is in Gingerbread
Very nice! However, I prefer a 'Leaning Tower of Pizza' myself... :P
Sorry, couldn't resist. Bad joke, I know. I'll go away again.
oo that looks yummy!!
:D
aha nah. we did big ben last year http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-0164-jpg
Oooh, fancy!
tasted sooo good
Does look like it did!
I have the munchies for something savoury but can't be bothered to walk to 7-Eleven
May have to go cupboard exploring but fear there is nothing that will inspire me
yay they found my cardy! And my lovely mum is going to drive an hour to the airport to pick it up. I am so happy!
I hope you are Resting In Peace Ling Ling (not from Drawn Together)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ling-Ling_and_Hsing-Hsing
And I'm doing some preparation for another Piquet post...
Miracle!
Did you buy another one already?
I told you if you ordered a new one the old one would turn up
Good news!
Is she gonna post it to ya?
yay! :D
if she's got a good throw then she could always throw it, the gap isnt that big ;)
i did buy another one but that is ok because its a different colour. Mum will probably hold on to it until april when nz parents are coming to visit. Only 112 days til they arrive :D
Anyway, to the journalism bed! Night ladies and gents...
Night Tom
How many countries do you have parents in?
Night Tom
grr i always forget nz comes before my. Predictive dictionaries make no sense.

Mr C discovering that it is not a good idea to sniff something just because it is going to go in a cake.
I don't want to go to bed - but I have to because I need to get up tomorrow for something I have to do and won't enjoy :(
Stay awake now then you will be less alert and therefore less bored when you have to do the thing you don't want to do.
I will fall asleep during the thing which would be bad too!
So you don't want to do it and you have to be awake for it. It just gets worse.
Hello. Just dropping by to say hi. :)
Hi Journeyer
Have I missed much? Looks like it's been a quiet few days round here.
hi.
It has been really quiet. Mr C did a post on updates to the site and Christine did a best of the Debrief podcast. She is now looking for suggestions dor the best of sidepodradio
so the offseason DOES exist! For a week or so anyway. :D
The offseason is not the Christmas break! ;)
:D
oh lord. i just asked christine why we're doing suggestions for the best of sidepodradio, and she returned a look that said "you didn't read the daily did you?"
Busted for not reading your own website now?
:)
we are catching up on our todo list though.
i was so happy it posted, i forgot to read it
:D
good night people!
night gavin.
Night Gavin
did we know that leo has video replays available now?
http://twit.cachefly.net/video/twig/twig0022/twig0022_h264b_864x480_500.mp4
stunning quality.
He has been talking about them for two or three weeks but he keeps saying that they are not right but they will be
how can they not be right? they're brilliant!
I think they are not being edited and put on the feed fast enough for him just now.
ah, fair enough. really fast to download.
I have never looked at the videos but I will have a go tomorrow when I am not using so many tabs
I'm home. *hugs computer*
HEY!
kathi!
Amy!
i missed you!
aww I missed you too.
You bought a computer?
i did. It runs linux! Its not here yet though, stupid public holidays.
all will be fine, it's really easy *runs*
i watched some review videos on youtube and it does appear that the linux on the eee really is linux for dummies. Im sure ill be fine :D
as long as you stay away from skype ;) Yell if something comes up. I'm sure I can make it worse. :D
But nobody yells when they use linux, its so easy! ;)
did you hear that we've decided to buy a windows 7 machine when income permits, just to get skype working properly?
skype works on Mac too :-)
in theory, yes. in practice not so much. it's a pain in the backside and the versions are always way behind the windows versions.
of course in an ideal world there would be better voip software than skype. but that's another argument altogether.
and on that note. sleeps.
mine works ... occasionally.
Morning all.
Is Mr C in Australia, or becoming nocturnal?
I just joined a fantasy tennis pool, and I had to have Roger! Roger was the Brawn of the pool, leaving me with enough money to buy no one else good. But I had to have him!
Hey Stuart. Mr C was always nocturnal, wasn't he? ;)
sometime I feel this place is fully occupied by nocturnals :-)
hahaha! I'm no nocturnal.
not all the time anyway. Hahaha!
I just bought a lotto ticket. I have a good feeling that 30 million will be mine!
Have I missed much? Looks like it's been a quiet few days round here. {Comment #80}
It has been, unless you count us laughing/rolling eyes (delete as appropriate) at the Spanish April Fool's day stories...
oh lord. i just asked christine why we're doing suggestions for the best of sidepodradio, and she returned a look that said "you didn't read the daily did you?" {Comment #85}
Oh dear. You need to get a feed aggregator for Christine's produce, possibly titled "Where in Cyberspace is Mrs C?" After all, keeping track of someone who writes as much and as well as Christine must be difficult.
In your face wikipedia! Just come to me for all your factual needs!
I seem to NOT have won that Christmas wishlist prize worth 2000 GBP. Oh well - maybe I'll win their grand prize Beemer. :D
Good luck with that, Amy. Split the prize with us if you win? ;) :D
I'll totally be one of those people who doesn't tell anyone I have won, but you'd all work it out when I suddenly stop working and start attending every race next year :D
Suddenly attending more races this year... Aha!
I'm not falling for that!

Hey everyone
remember your promise to me amy! ;)
Morning :)
Hey Lou!
Hi everyone... i'm new here... just finding my way around this superb site.
Everyone having a nice morning?
Welcome!
Apart from being annoyed at the MET office being completely and utterly wrong... I've just been laying about. Not too exciting ;)
Yes I am
ah.. No snow? Ours must have fallen as heavy rain... It rained allllll night!
heya
It's just drizzle. Useless, silly drizzle. The 5 inches of snow is clearly invisible snow. ;)
Column A, Column B. Getting ready for football this afternoon.
Hey Firbob
Welcome :)
ah.. Like the invisible train emily and I tried to catch to victoria when trying to get to alex's party... Silly invisible things!
Hehehe :)
Raining here (Wirral, England), spending all day catching up on TV recorded over Christmas and playing with kids on Wii (Christmas present)
And I'm off, going for another 'perfect' record in the 5-a-side tournament today.
"What do you think of ING's chances of winning this race, Martin? Martin?! Hi! HI! HI!!!!"
#sidepodradio
ooo good luck!!
Morning all.
Morning Christine
Morning (just)
oh yes. Lou will mysteriously be coming to Monza. No other signs that I've won though!
hey christine :)
I want some raaaaain. It's 30 degrees and almost 11pm. My fan is blowing hot air around so is not cooling me at all. I am about to have a cold shower but if it was raining I'd go lie in it and it'd be amazing.
wohoo! :)
Morning :)
So are we all going to post our New Years resolutions in the daily tomorrow?
I following Christine and Amy's lead and am starting early on one of mine today.
I don't have any!
Which one Alex?
Noooooo, there will be a post!
Is that your resolution?
A post about resolutions?
Yup, just like last year.
Ah I have forgotten last year already!
I failed at starting early because by the time I actually went to bed it was about 3am.
I now don't know if I should say because there isn't a post for it yet.
Will I get in trouble Christine?
The post: http://sidepodcast.com/2008/12/31/f1-new-years-resolutions/
And the recap: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/11/28/2009-f1-new-years-resolutions-revisited/
:)
It's all come vividly flooding back now. I remember reading that second post and thinking! You promised to watch every free practice!!!
You won't get into trouble. It's up to you if you want to a) say it now and not say it again, b) say it now and say it again tomorrow or b) wait.
We give you the tools, we can't make all the decisions :)
Which b do we choose!
:P
I feel like I shouldn't say because I'm pretty much resolving to do every single thing on the 'list of most broken resolutions' apart from "quit smoking" which I'd have to start in the first place if I wanted to stop.
Shhhh.
:)
Okay then
I am, I think, going to go back to publishing a gamboling blog post every week day in 2010. I think the last year that I did that was 2005 or 6 I can't remember.
I have been trying to get ahead of myself to help my cause.
As it involves plugging I think I'll go for the first b) :)
Perfect :)
Oooooh its Journeyer's birthday today. Happy birthday sir :)
yeeeyyyy Happy Birthday Journeyer!!
Morning all
Happy Birthday Journeyer!
Happy Birthday Journeyer! :)
Happy birthday! You kept that quiet!
I think I shall celebrate his birthday with a visit to my local bakery ;)
*cough* Lukehs tomorrow *cough*
Absolutely.
hehehe he's getting old ;) *runs away*
Argh! I miss Greggs. I haven't been for aaaaaages.
We have too many here, I shall send one your way like I sent one to Lou :P
i have been to greggs once, but i must say their chocolate muffins are very nice.
Hahaha! And a happy birthday to you too! :) Tomorrow anyway. :D
am guessing the snow was too bad for the train?
Thank you as well to Jon, Christine, Lou, and Amy. :D :D
Yes, Amy, I kept it quiet. I was wondering who'd remember. Hehehehehe. :D
The snow was completely non existant
*kicks stupid met office warning*
:D
#confused
Happy Birthday Journeyer!
Thank you, Alex. :)
...bah, no Greggs for me. Instead, work as 4 people have happily phoned in sick.
There's a blog post about that: http://toata.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/52-can-i-be-8-years-old-again-please/
I'd love it if you sent some my way. It would be cold by the time it gets here, though.
it snowed yesterday evening in wales.. and we gathered it was then possible for it to continue snowing over night as predicted..i was also meant to get snow overnight... my snow fell as heavy rain, and Lukeh didn't get more snow. We only knew this once we had got up though, plus my mum didn't like the thought of me being stuck in london overnight if it did snow today.
i suppose as long as you aren't working tomorrow.. that's a good thing?
:D
:(
Yeah, extra money towards this car in january. No work tomorrow though thank god ;)
:) yay! you could think of it as being a birthday present from work :P
Well I get paid tomorrow so they're giving me a lovely present based on how many hours I've done in the last 2 weeks or so :)
:D
Is iTunes acting really odd for anyone today with downloading? Podcats, app updates, everythings going really slowly or crashing iTunes for me...
Mine has been okay so far.
Hmm. Might be a dodgy combination of a laptop in a bad moon and an internet connection slower than a Badoer parade.
Your laptop is a werewolf!
Does it go 'Awoooooo'? :D
The fans underneath do on a good day :P
podcats!! i want one, they sound cute..
itunes is fine for me..
:D
The first day of the transition is the worst according to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Tell me about it, it was scary on Futurama when Bender turned into a werecar and had no idea what he was doing
Podcats and werewolf laptops - Lukeh's house must be some awesome zoo. :D
podcat! The most effectual podcat!
is it just a coincedence then that Lou wanted to go to a zoo the other day? :)
All his friends call him PC!!
:D
Was just reading this on AUTOSPORT
When asked by German newspaper Bild who he thought Schumacher's biggest rival in 2010 would be, Ecclestone replied: "There are several - [Lewis] Hamilton, [Fernando] Alonso... But I will say this now: Vettel will be the next world champion."
Good to hear Bernie is organised and has already scripted what will happen in F1 in 2010. Can't wait to see what scandal twists he's put into the script!
:D Vettel as champ? RBR is good, but is it good enough to beat Ferrari, McLaren, AND Mercedes, who I assume will all be on form next year?
haha!
:)
we must try and remember this, cause if Vettel does become Champion we can use it as an excuse that Bernie fixes the championships and try get him fired :P
Wait... didn't Bernie say Massa would be 08 champ? That didn't quite turn out to be true...
You're onto something! ;)
Brawn/Mercedes were not that good over thew second half of last year. I would expect the champion to com from McLaren, Ferrari or Red Bull.
And he would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling Japanese manufacturers!
yet, a year later, Toyota was gone... coincedence?! I think not!! ;)
Brawn have been working on the 2010 car for a longer time than expected though..i wouldn't count them out totally..
But only because they've focused on 2010 instead. Ross admitted as much - he said they only spent 2 weeks in the 2nd half of the season on 2009 dev. The rest was for 2010.
:D
oh wait... Jenson isn't at Brawn this year, there isnt any need to defend them.
this is going to take getting used to.
Must. not. defend. Schumacher.
:D eheh
"But only because they've focused on 2010 instead. Ross admitted as much - he said they only spent 2 weeks in the 2nd half of the season on 2009 dev. The rest was for 2010."
Ferrari have been developing the 2010 car since early 2009 so they should be up there in 2010
i shall enjoy these last 2 days of Jenson technically being a Brawn driver.. :)
Well he is looking very tired.
Maybe they will pull out and we'll get Domenicali GP in the next few weeks?
LOL!!!!
ooooh how awesome would it be hearing mr c trying to pronounce Domenicali each week! :D ehe
Firbob how are you commenting? Are you using: http://sidepodcast.com/realtime/
Because if you are once you start a reply you can simply click on the paragraph you want to quote and it will properly format it.
Thank you for helping me. :D
True. But McLaren and RBR decided to develop until the end of 2009. We shall see how it turns out.
Ahh! I was wondering how you did that. Thanks Alex.
Aww, I'm sorry. It is your birthday after all.
Mr Schumacher does have a lovely trophy cabinet, I'm sure. I think that's as far as I can go. :P
hehe no problem ;) i'm used to defending Brawn, it comes very easily to me now. heaven knows how i'm going to adjust to defending Mclaren.. a team i'm not particularly fond of. maybe i'll stick to just defending Jenson. :)
I have already got my plans sorted for Rubens
#blameHulkenburg
and blame the team if it all goes horribly wrong? :P
i like it! :D
Each year Murray Walker would announce the coming year as the best look year ever. This year (2010) he could well be right. lol
Shall we practice?
Situation: Lewis has won, Jenson 3rd, Rosberg 2nd.
Jenson's been pushing as hard as possible, but he can't get any more out of hte car....
Go! ;)
I'd better head off. See you all later!
Adios mon amie
See you Lukeh
No probs :) We're here to help... And sometimes talk about F1 ;)
bye!!
See ya tomorrow's birthday boy. :D
grrrrrrrrr Mclaren!! ggrrrrrrrrrrrr
#blamemclaren
does that work?
umm, Lewis won. so no ;)
I'm off for my lunch, more turkey sandwiches (Grrr).
Catch you all later.
bye
well there isn't really anything wrong with third... he still gets a trophy, as long as he doesn't have to wear the victory shirts i can cope with him being on the podium until he beats Lewis in the most spectacular style ever! :)
see you!
i think you may have to get used to an orangey/red jenson
never!! (unless he wins against lewis and then i will buy a red rocket shirt)
he will win at some point i suspect, but lewis will tooo
I have blogged about f1.. - http://photofinishblog.wordpress.com/2009/12/30/is-time-running-out/
i really need lessons on plugging from Alex..
Happy to help :)
if jenson beats lewis in a straight fight. so will i.
morning all.
i will hold you to that. remember when you laughed at me for having Jenson in my fantasy racers team? ;)
afternoon ;)
over a season or on a specific race?
just a race. if they both have the same machinery, and neither has flu etc. if they both finish and jenson is ahead, i'll buy a red shirt.
i do :)
hehehe :) awesome! can't wait to see you in one of those shirts mr c.. a part of me hopes that i happens at Spa... :)
i didn't say i was going to wear it??
however, it might look nice on christine ;)
Hey!! Keep me out of your stoopid bets :)
hehe brilliant :) looks like mr c will be wearing it :P
;)
Hey all.
hey chris, how are ya?
Hello :)
Not bad. Bit tired, but this time of year is pretty busy for me! How are everyone else? I see Mr C's going to be wearing mclaren red at some point!
i don't believe i will be :)
well you said you wouldn't where a panda suit either...
Says the guy who allowed Kathrine to duct tape an iphone to his chest!
shhh!
:D

Hey everyone :) quick question, is it worth getting the custome CSS upgrade or should I just avoid that?
I haven't splashed out on it before. I guess it depends on whether you are fed up of the themes on offer.
how does the multitouch compare to the iphone?
I am starting to get bored of them. sadly i can't upload any new themes :)
Ah I have forgotten last year already!
The post: http://sidepod...ew-years-resolutions/
And the recap: http://sidepod...esolutions-revisited/ {Comment #173}
My resolutions were:
- Finish Keldostri Acaleros ((my NaNoNovel) before the end of May 2008 so that I can take advantage of the CreateSpace offer)
- Do NaNoWriMo 2009
- Get started on library Chartership
- Do ScriptFrenzy
- Get a distinction for Level 3 Text Processing
- Starting my own business
- Sort out my job
I managed Script Frenzy... ...but that was it.
In which case, it might be worth your while. You can be our guinea pig :)
Good to hear Bernie is organised and has already scripted what will happen in F1 in 2010. Can't wait to see what scandal twists he's put into the script! {Comment #230}
He's already on revision 2. Last I heard he was saying Michael Schumacher was going to be 2010 F1 Champion.
Maybe if I wait long enough he'll say Bruno Senna will be the next champion...
Hehe :) It is going cost £9.42 to edit the CSS for a year, before I have to pay again. not bad I guess.
Certainly cheaper than hosting your own Wordpress, which is the other way to get customised themes.
This is true but I can only play with what Wordpress give me. Hmm time to think :D
Ever felt like you're life isn't going quite how you thought it would?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-0456-jpg
hmm
You can get free hosts, but you wont get a proper domain
Indeed. I just checked and I get a domain with my blog name.
We have alot of spare gingerbread dough, what do we do with it? Any ideas?
staying with the french theme what about.. the arc de triomphe?
Afternoon all.
lo.
hey
It seems to be a popular topic, so I have brought forward the resolutions post by a day: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/30/2009-new-years-resolutions/
Alex, you can repeat yourself now :)
ooh, have just read the iguanadon reference in the daily too!

Thank you :)

Afternoon all
Hey mate
Hi there!
Afternoon
So the thing I had to do today is done, Thank God!
Cool, lucky you
Am off to see Avatar soon so will report back tonight on it's goodness [or not]
Having an early bite to eat due to extended cinema dwelling
I can't get near a cinema to see it in 3D as everyone in Denmark is going to see it!
I booked about a month ago and this was the best slot I got!
have fun!! (you may need a blog...)
I can't keep up with reading them, don't think I could cope with creating one as well
it seems slightly less accurate but that may be because you are at arms length.
excellent I'll get right on that :) thank you :)
Shall we move closer? ;)
Right, I'm off
Back later
Enjoy the film
heh. What I mean is with the iPhone you really are cradling the device with your other hand so it's quite different to when the screen is propped up in front of you. Also I felt the Microsoft implementation of touch was closer to the google touch implimentation. I feel like my iPhone knows what I meant to touch microsoft's seems a bit indescriminant.
Hello all, back from visiting my mother on the Isle of Wight.
Good things: Seeing Mum & Sister, Visting an uncle & aunt and a good friend, singing in church on Sunday, Christmas, new iPod Touch.
Bad things: Broke Mum's toilet on Boxing Day. Managed to get it working & not leaking but she's going to have to get the plumber in. I'm currently in dispute with her over payment of the plumber as I'm going to pay but she thinks she is.
Hope everyone enjoyed the break.
Hi Janna,
Good to see Christmas was good for you!
That's the kind of payment dispute you want to have!
hey janna. we require of you some new year's resolutions:
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/30/2010-new-years-resolutions/
oh yes!
still want one.
I know, she's supposed to be an impoverished pensioner but she always pays for things as if my sister & I are still 12 & 14 and not many more years older than that ;)
Want one what?
They never stop do they? :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-4027-mov
That reminds me soooo much of Minority Report!
As a matter of fact, I'm still enjoying it! (don't have to go back to work until next week).
Good to hear you (mostly) had a good break, it seems :)
Me too, just have a mountain of washing (and podcasts) to get through before I go back on Monday
yeah, if only podcast producers took a break the same time I did. If I miss ONE day of listening, I'm in trouble!
I should do some laundry, too....
#MFC -misread future change
I thought you broke your mum's tablet.
oh yes me too. It's a minnor quibble.
And you can in windows 7 type using an onscreen keyboard and use it as a mouse.
why are they not yelling that from the rooftops?
this is them being slightly sensible for a change. They have written about 5 apps for windows 7 that do this multitouch thing a scrapbook, a blackboard the maps thing and another 2 I can't remember. But they have opened up the entire api and shown in the dev channel how they did their stuff.
I think they'll start shouting once they have loads of cool things to shout about.
Because it's Microsoft?
it's called Microsoft surface. I think it might have been on MFC, no?
does it require a special monitor?
Presumably a touch screen, yes.
that's 10k though.
I think just that big surface table they built is 10k, with all the object identification and syncing (if that part even worked, just put your phone on the table and it would automatically sync or something like that)
surface has something crazy like 52 point multitouch, so lots of people can work at the same time.
of note to me though, is alex's product demo just made me interested in windows 7. which is more than microsoft have achieved.
Windows 7 isn't actually bad, I just think Microsoft have been a bit wary about hyping it up. Look what happened with all the hype they gave Windows Vista.
Alex seems like a nice guy and all, but the only things that could get me interested in windows 7 can't be mentioned in a family channel :)
I have used it lightly and I think it's OK...
Well, bad as in Vista levels of things.
It's the same silly thing that they did before where it turns out that there are two microsoft products with the same name!
in that case i'm confused.
Dang, I think I've actually been to Logan, UT!
Ah, Fireworks next door. Must be 6:30 then ;)
Okay... I think I have worked out what is going on now...
There is the Microsoft Surface Team who make that big 10k thing. And the software for it.
Microsoft have introduced something called the Microsoft Touch Pack which is a suite of software which OEM vendors can choose to install some, all or none of with Windows 7. This works on Microsoft Touch Technology aparently.
Except all of the software was written by the Microsoft Surface Team. And is called things like: "Microsoft Surface Globe" and "Microsoft Surface Scrapbook", etc.
Sounds like Microsoft to me!
oooh, ok.
Have spent most of the day clearing out the Blog category, because it was weird having a Blog page with a sub-category of, well... blog.
There are loads of new categories, all of which can be found on the Archives page. http://sidepodcast.com/archive/
Hopefully, they are self-explanatory, but if any look out of place, or you have any suggestions, please let us know.
The categories in the grey bit at the bottom of every page will be updated once we have finalised the list.
Congrats!
Someone's been busy. I'm jealous. I procrastinate far too much.
I've found this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/whats-the-microsoft-touch-pack-for-windows-7
your demo is sooo much better.
Ah I can't watch the demo from here.
I wanted my dad to pass me a piece of paper with a picture of a sailboat on it. But he wouldn't :(
USF1team has had 2 tweets in the past 22 hours. It's like a torrent of information! (compared to what was going on before)
Evening all!
Evening Adie :)
Are you well? Looked like you had a lot of over Christmas from the pics on your Twitter feed!
:D
hey sir.
they're learning!
hello all! how are you? leaving behind Christmas dinner and preparing for New Year dinner? ;-)
oohhh.... I gotta figure out what beer I'm gonna be drinking!
oh, yeah, hello, too :)
Hello again :)
hard decisions... ;-)
yet VERY important! :D
I prefer a good single malt whiskey to beer, but I drink both.
Rum and Whisk(e)y give less of a hangover than beer!
That's another upshot, yes. Mind you, I don't drink enough to get a hangover in the first place.
True, if you drink enough to get a hangover. But I can finish a whole 750ml bottle of any beer (no matter the strength) without much worry. If I did that with whisky or scotch or anything like that it'd kill me :)
Howdy!
Apologies...on a call from my Mother then!
multitasking fail?
I've got dinner on the go too, so very nearly!
You well?
Shameless plug time: The post on Campos I wrote last night for 'A Little Bit... Piquet' http://wp.me/pKGQm-j
Yes it was all good. Have had a good time :)
Hey everyone.
USF1 has started a facebook group.
I don't think their PR people are really up to snuff. This photo they posted to their page is itching for a caption contest.
LINK: http://www.facebook.com/dan.c.brunell?v=info&ref=profile#/photo.php?pid=3882935&id=223461686185&comments
ooh yesh. although admittedly, i'm just doing one thing at a time.
Ken and Peter talking drivers? Good Lord!
Safest this way!
Yeah but you don't need to drink the whole whisk(e)y bottle to get merry do you?
As soon as I saw this, I smacked myself on the forehead and typed in my typical "Caddyshack" answer to this question.
"...and here's our first steering wheel ken. you mean you can't see it??"
Excellent...
Agreed!
Very true Gavin...but I often find it helps!
Another USF1 Facebook caption competition here, must be. Notice the empty space? :P http://bit.ly/5afzRR
They wrte: Official US F1 Team pictures of the car will be distributed soon. planning an official unveil so can't let anything out until then! continue to check back here and on our website, usf1.com
Peter: "What? Our efforts to clone Jim Clark failed?"
they're announcing on facebook?
I'll believe there's a car when I see it, for now, I continue with the whole toaster business idea.
"Okay, here's the new 2010 car.... Oh, someone's nicked it. Oh boy, umm, look, a Jim Clark picture."
Or YouTube?
It'll be a 3D computer model or something equally as Vapor-warish...
People are saying they want Bourdais to drive for USF1, makes sense, if their car ends up like a Champ Car...
good to hear. I started eating on 19th (mum's birthday), I haven's stopped since... :-)
I'm currently researching the Dakar route... not looking good, it seems I'll have to do some 300km to the closest racing point :-(
I want USF1 to succeed but my god, I feel like I just spent my life savings betting on a mule in the Kentucky Derby... and they haven't even hit the track yet.
but if they succeed you'll be immensely 'rich'...
Good point there, or it'll just remain to the Top Gear mantra, 'Ambitious but rubbish.'
Actually, being a Seattle sports fan, I am used to the Kathy Bates level of misery.
Something interesting I found on Wikipedia and spent last night trying to verify. This part of the page of FIA Super License:
"Additionally, drivers who have competed in the IndyCar Series are eligible for a Super Licence if they finished within the first six places of the drivers championship. This allows drivers from the United States domestic series to move into Formula One without first taking part in other FIA sanctioned events."
I think it is udder tosh, then I just realized, how did Bourdais get his superlisence?
Question:
I want to do a weighted score based on a driver's classification in the following categories: Finishing Position, Qualifying Position, Fastest Lap and Consistency. How would you guys weight the categories in percentage terms (eg. 50-25-5-20)?
Could you please mark your answers #weight so I can check them later? I appreciate any input here ;)
#weight. I understand the first three but can you expand on Consistency - how is it measured?
#weight
40-25-5-30
Read my explanation for more. Sorry I should have added that before!
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/faq/driver-consistencies-explained/
'Ladies and gentlemen, in front of you we present, our 2010 Formula car!'
:)
don't know. just check gp+ and it doesn't say either.
Him and Yuji Ide won F1 Factor maybe
Thanks, then I would say:
#weight
50-30-10-20
If this is true, you know who would be the only American to qualify for a Super license from IndyCar?
Danica Patrick.
I like your idea that all drivers are giving 110% ;)
they were clearly better, but Villeneuve and Montoya also jumped from CART to F1 with their license in the pocket
Sorry, addition fail :(, I altered it a few times because I couldn't decide. It'll have to be the same as your example
#weight
50-25-5-20
Montoya did F3000 before he went to CART though...
you're right. I thought he had spent more than two year in the US.
I think he did F3000 and tested F1 cars in 97 and 98 before doing CART in 99 and 00. He started F1 in 2001 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Montoya
Nope. I do like whisky and bourbon and single malt scotch, though, I just don't drink it very often.
Dangit ken, I'm telling you, it needs to be made of carbon fiber, aluminum, and it must be able to toast _4_ slices! I've had enough of this "2 slice toaster" from you!!
If they do an official launch thingamabobber in Charlotte I'm going to try and attend.
Luckily, mules aren't that expensive :)
If this "IndyCar" provision is true (which I have my doubts, but trying to verify) the following people have super licenses from finishing in the top six of IndyCar the last two years.
Dario Franchitti
Scott Dixon
Ryan Briscoe
Hélio Castroneves
Danica Patrick
Tony Kanaan
Dan Wheldon
And none of which have a Cat in Hell's chance of getting anywhere near F1, sadly :(
Would they even want too? I imagine they're all making pretty good bank where they currently are.
They do, that is true. I think Dario and Scott should have had a crack, the others suit Indycar better.
That said, Mr. Ashley Judd would be interesting to see in Formula One. Briscoe would be interesting as well
Actually, Gavin right, I think Scoot might be interesting as well.
There, I fixed that one right up for you.
Actually, I'd rather she wasn't. She's very annoying!
Evening all
I love the body language in this pic. They are all standing as far as possible from each other and from the guy doing the talking. The individual body language is no better. This does not look like a team pulling together and excited about what they are doing. It looks like an organisation where everyone has been there for 20 years and is thoroughly disilliusioned and cynical. I would have thought it was impossible for a team to consistently put out a negative image of itself.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3876078&id=223461686185
#weight 40-30-0-30
I absolutely agreed. I think there is some of the criticism that unfounded towards USF1. However, the lack of PR savvy shown by the team that proclaims to be the contrary is just embarrassing.
I think you're reading too much into the picture, but I agree about the terrible PR.
I have been in a lot of similar meetings. Both in companies where everyone was pulling together and when they are not. This is very clearly from the second category. it also shows management who have no clue about start ups. The first thing you do at the first group meeting in any new start up is make sure people are physically as close as possible so that barriers are broken down. You do not allow people to spread out like that.
You can draw an arc from the point of view of the speaker going up the far wall and across the second bench. Everyone in that picture could be comfortably in that area but in reality only 4 people are.
There are conversations going on while the guy at the front is speaking. There are two pairs standing together on the far wall drinking coffee and having their own private little conversations. If they are lucky there are 6 people who are there to engage in the meeting. Look at the number of people with folded arms and slumped shoulders. They don't want to be ther listening to him.
There are even people standing behind the speaker. There are a lot of negatives in that picture that good management would not allow.
If the team kept their mouth shut from the beginning and would of followed Ken Anderson's lead of being low key, they would of been viewed entirely different. I like Peter Windsor, but he clearly doesn't have the PR savvy he thinks he has. If they hired a profession to handle messaging, new and old media, web development, and press relations; the team would be viewed in a totally different way.
One of the first lessons I've ever learned in corporate public relations from my dad was is to always "Under promise, over deliver." How the heck can USF1 deliver on all that it has promised? How can many Peter Windsor "putting the fire out" interviews on AUTOSPORT can we read? It is just frustrating to watch unfold. I want these guys to succeed but just watching them shoot themselves in the foot is just getting depressing not.
If I ever write a book or article on public relations for a PRSA or other trade industry journal, I will be using them as an example of what not to do.
Under promise and over deliver is always a good idea.
On the other hand saying you will be more open than any team in history then say you planned a 6 months radio silence is just stupid as is saying that you are establishing your team next to the best wind tunnel in north America then claiming your car is designed on CFD because someone else is using that as a unique selling point.
I really hope this team succeeds but they need to get a lot smarter very quickly.
:P
And on that note, I actually blogged about it! (http://jpancoast.wordpress.com/).
I'm pretty much just regurgitating stuff from you guys here, but I sorta felt like writing something to "get it out".
Sorry for the rant. I'm frustrated. I've seen these mistakes too many times before. Ironically, it is usually when some hot shot TV presenter becomes a PR representative and thinks PR is all about who, what you know, and smoozing. They end up screwing up because once a crisis hits, they don't know how to handle it and they haven't properly prepared themselves or the people around them.
i love, love, love new blog posts.
if everybody keeps this up in 2010, it'll be a fab year for f1 blogging.
get this. we're going to watch another film. it's like we've discovered a sidepodcast / life balance (of sorts).
back in a bit. be lovely.
enjoy it!
If I keep it up, it'll probably be about random stuff, unfortunately.
Ah, I keep random and F1 separate by having two blogs. :)
Avatar was fantastic!
There's a lot of if's here, but if I find myself wanting to write enough about F1 and keeping it up then I'll do that.
Blimey!
really?
Good evening again
Straving with hunger now, so need to eat soon
That's good. I want to go and see it.
I loved it
It may be a bit of a boy's film to some extent
I know Emily hated it, but she has already confessed to a fantasy genre dislike
awesome :) i'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Mr C didn't say what they were going to watch next?
This is going to ruin the Bassano/Christine double act on sidepodradio2 if she has seen lots of films
Oh, I don't know
We could start talking about the same film, that should be fun
In 3D?
Yup, very immersive
You get used to it pretty soon, didn't feel like the gimmick I expected
Cool. I just have to wait for the rest of Odense to see it first!
Eurosport are coverin every stage of the Dakar starting on Jan 2.
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/25122009/58/dakar-2010-dakar-returns-eurosport.html
They did that last year (still not seen it yet). @tobymoody on twitter is providing excellent updates. He's an ace Motorbike commentator so it's great to see him get the gig!
I like him on Moto GP but didn't know he was doing the Dakar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wptI7jYlr9Q
The man in action. Reminds me a little of Muzza!
Yep, I think that sort of energy in commentating is fantastic. We need more like that in F1 again!
I have wayyy too much spare time.
:)
the first step to a cure is admitting to having a problem. I'm glad you've finally taken that first step. We can now help you! :D
Hello.
Haro Pat!
I just said goodbye to my sister who I will now not see until either March or May, depending on either of our finances...
I think it is udder tosh, then I just realized, how did Bourdais get his superlisence? {Comment #429}
Easy. He was Champ Car champion four times in succession. That was a recognised path to a Superlicence before it amalgamated with IndyCars (in fact, the top two in both series were eligible).
Evening Gavin. I had an idea to replace the fuel consumption blogs. It might not work after every race, but how about a comparison of gaps between teams?
ooh, not fuel consumption, I got confused reading your site and thinking of something else :-) I mean the qualifying fuel posts needs replacing
So, the FIA can't be blamed for the lack of American talent in F1, because they could quite easily get a Superlicence. It's just that the drivers either don't want to come over and take the plunge or their not so good and teams don't consider them.
He also won the French F3 championship and the Internationall F3000 championship so would have been eligible for a superlicense before he went to America.
but not after 4 years there...
I am adding this to your Suggestion Box, which is a great page
Great idea!
(Sorry I was in the zone making graphs - can you please have a think about my idea for #weights that I asked for opinions on earlier?)
I will have a look
He also won the French F3 championship and the Internationall F3000 championship so would have been eligible for a superlicense before he went to America {Comment #503}
The F3000 would have taken Sebastién to the end of 2005 - a good length of time, but not enough for people to see past Flavio's rejection of him and give him a shot in F1.
Thanks - that goes for anyone else who wasn't around earlier. Your opinions would be much appreciated ;)
I love the body language in this pic {Comment #458}
Me too. It looks like a scene from the initial presentation for the Future Jobs Fund assessment centre I attended a few weeks back. Which would make more sense if F1 factories were routinely filled with bored 16-24 year olds who had been given lousy instructions on how to get there by unemployment staff who are desperately trying to fill quotas and were now pretty clueless on what anything the speakers were wittering on about had to do with what they were told was going to happen before they got there...
At the very least, that picture speaks of lack of familiarity and communication difficulties. If that's a shot of dozens of people's induction speech, then it's somewhat excusable given what we know about USF1's hype/reality gap. Otherwise, I'm rather worried.
#weight
I think your example is very similar to how I would weight it. I can't decide whether to give more for qualifying or for consistency, I answer differently each time I ask myself the question! I will go for an equal weight because starting position at many tracks is just as important as race performance:
Finishing: 47
Qualifying: 24
Fastest Lap: 5
Consistency: 24
#weights
Yes Gav, sorry I didn't reply earlier, was busily writing.
I am slightly conflicted about it though because I think it depends what you are trying to do. I think that in my mind I can imagine that you are trying to work out the best way to judge a driver overall. But I think the only way to do that is to go for 100 - 0 - 0 - 0. Because winning the championship is all.
I do always have a wish that we could see the relative performance of the drivers stripping out the cars in total in a season. And I keep thinking that there must be a way by comparing team mates. But the essential question will always be was Alonso much better than Piquet or was Piquet much worse than Alonso. It's zero sum. A circular reference.
So I kind of think the only way to do it is to go by the championship. Or something.
:)
Happy birthday Journeyer!
That's fine, no probs ;)
Ahhhh you've done me 'ed in with that answer!
Can I also add that there will be a post dedicated to each category (as it's become too big to do as one post!)
Sorry about that!
It's no problem my friend!
I swear, my computer is haunted or something!
A great F1 article from Wired Magazine: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/12/todt-tells-f1-to-go-green/
For Shame BBC, you're being outdone by an American Tech News service!
Poltergeists? Did you hear a crash?
No. It just works fine all day and then swallows up all the RAM. She's old and battered and about a month away from the scrapheap...
Okay... It must be bed time now. Sleep loose and don't worry about bed bugs (if you need an explanation for this sign off: http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2009/09/go-to-bed.html )
For any media people/wanabee's, theres a new social networking come networking site, it looks very good, you can put content on it and show off your work, it's great.
http://www.fixedia.com/
Ha, the graph of blog views makes a symmetrical zig-zag. Simple things for simple minds!
Hmmmm not a bit too Pocahontas?
Night G Dawg ;)
I love looking at what people search for to find my blog. Nico Rosberg is scarily common.
Yeah G'Night Alex!
Ciao sir.
I always do the same search to see what page i'm on, and half the time get bored after a couple of pages. Clearly some people have more patience than me
I know. I'm also wondering why they'll find out about Rosberg on a Glock blog.
I do always have a wish that we could see the relative performance of the drivers stripping out the cars in total in a season. And I keep thinking that there must be a way by comparing team mates. But the essential question will always be was Alonso much better than Piquet or was Piquet much worse than Alonso. It's zero sum. A circular reference. {Cmment #512}
I remember doing something like that about a year ago, but fastest laps were the only factor it considered. Unfortunately I've lost the file, because it was largely pretty good (though some of the results for drivers who only had one season in the data set were odd - I refuse to believe Mika Salo was the best driver of the last 7 years!) It could say how many positions on average a driver was above or below the average fastest lap achieved by everyone.
Recreating it would be a lot of work, but would give me something to do before 2010 restarts...
night
Why not wait a week or so and see what I come up with? You are welcome to use my data sheet if you like...
I think I should do a stats post based on the blog stats when the year is up and include a funny part based on search terms :D
Morning all. Happy australian time zone birthday to mr lukeh!
Morning.
Racing in a circle making only left turns doesn't exactly give one a legitimate impression of how a driver might do on an F1 circuit. Nor does it give a driver the skills necessary to be competent in F1.
I dont' think the drivers are necessarily any worse at the beginning but going left and right is a whole different ballgame than just going left all the time.
Can I have a drum roll please!
Certainly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNaZedAWmlE
ba doom tshhh, oh thats not it, erm, dum, dum, dum
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-0525-jpg
TA DA
Mostly they don't want to. Or, they do want to when they are in junior series but can't raise the finance to come over so they go to NASCAR or IndyCar, start earning a nice living without having to leave their home country and just never move..
Haven't seen it but that didn't spring to mind, no
Very nice :-)
Wow, some of the finest food engineering I've ever seen!
That is pretty cool
*clap clap clap*
wow... :D
Well done sir!
(I do hope it will get eaten ;) )
Now that is some nice stools, where d'ya get them. They look nice.
Oh the cake thingy, that looks alright I say, canny good ;)
I think the biggest reason for this problen is who Penske and Ganassi picked for drivers. If you want a shot to win the IndyCar title, you have to be apart of one of those two teams. Normally Penske and Ganassi go for older foreign drivers. Penske has put a few young Americans through his IndyCar team like Sam Hornish Jr, but as soon as they show promise, Penske puts them in his NASCAR team since there is more money to be made there. Same with Ganassi to an extent.
yay, back in time to predict the daily :)
Daily lottery? Are you Derren Brown?
What did you watch?
ummmm
am betting 6 minutes past.
again?
What film did you see?
Oh yeah, that can be one of mine as well. Save money for Spa. Although I could do with it now so I can book somewhere to stay before all the cheap ones go
oops can you move my comments mr c :D
I don't mind booking it, I just don't have much time in searching for it at the moment
where to/from?
Get the holiday period over with first.
Indeed
We watched Knowing, and Amy, I'm on it.
Mr C is clearly in a world of his own.
it might be kinda predictable.
I'm guessing there wasn't one?
What did you think?
Throughout the next few months, I shall observe the daily post and, using this information, I shall be able to accurately predict the time at which it is posted.
The Nic Cage film, any good?
The story is utterly bizarre, but I like the numbers and I also heart blowing things up. So good overall.
What is it about?
thank you christine. One day i will remember that mobile doohickey cant read my mind.
Have you seen The Number 23?
I've heard that alright too
You might forget :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHw8URgDvxM
You think there is a pattern to it? First you have to correctly predict if Mr C will remember to write it when it is his turn.
(only cos I don't want to spoil anything)
It might be like how Derren Brown did the lottery, then again, that could include hoaxes...
Am currently watching Role Models, which is quite funny
Oh! I wanted to see that. Was it good?
Ah, yes, apparently it was :-)
Predicting the future? Seems apt for what we're doing with the daily post! :D
I liked that. Bit odd.
Looks very disaster movie-ish. I must get around to writing that blog post about disaster Movies at some point!
wouldn't really call it that.
Aww :( Me likes disaster movies!
The freebie today for iTunes' 12 Days promo is that James Cordon film with the oddly not-quite-family-friendy title
http://www.itunes12daysofchristmas.co.uk/
It does have some quite epic disasters within it though. Don't be put off!
Are we still talking about USF1, I figured we would of changed topics by now. ;)
Oh my God, I've always wanted to see that film and they're giving it away free? YAY!
You have to go via the 12 days link, it's still priced normally through an iTunes search
They've given away a few good things so far
I fear the title of that film will only lead to a letdown!
I'm guessing it's not great but it is free
Is the only way I was ever gonna see it
Yes, I got the iPhone app to remind me of each day's item. I enjoyed the Trivial Pursuit a few days back, but it went downhill for a bit.
It's not for that reason I want to see it! I just thought it looked funny.
Back to the film
