It is Allan McNish's birthday today, and as it is drawing nearer to January, he must be getting prepared for the Autosport International show. Just like DC, we have seen him up in Birmingham pretty much every year that we have been. Although we still haven't decided if we'll go this year. Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:
- All the talk is of US F1 at the moment, as they came out and said their silence over recent weeks has been on purpose and hasn't necessarily been because they haven't nothing to say. The problem is now they are talking, there are also rumours about Ralf Schumacher coming back as well. Oh dear.
- Abu Dhabi organisers have confirmed that there will be no changes to the pit lane exit, despite the fact there were plenty of concerns during the 2009 race. Granted, nothing untoward happened, but that didn't settle any fears over the dangerous tunnel element to the exit. They say all changes there will be minor, and they aren't worried about it.
- Jean Todt is bringing old friends in to the FIA now, with the news that Gilles Simon, an ex-engine guy for the red team, has been brought in to advise on future technology and greener initiatives. The FIA are still trying to recover from the KERS debacle, so fresh blood may be what's needed.
That should do it for now, let us know what you're up to, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.
so. i fixed the scheduler so that daily posts appear on time, and somebody forgets to write one.
what kind of test is that?
I was wondering where that was!
You are more than welcome to write one.
Mrs C forgot to write the daily?
#nothingtoseehere
I get confused staying up late.
it's understandable, i didn't even know it was past 11, i feel like i've just lost an hour of the day..
not again! i didn't steal it this time
:D
Ha, I think my friend is jealous of my infamy here at Sidepodcast :)
Are you just accident prone? The dog walking injury last week, the arm burning on your blog, what next?
I wasn't injured when we played with fire in school, my jumper just went slightly crispy!
Does he like F1, tell him/her to join us
He doesn't, no. I've tried, he just doesn't get it!
that's not an acceptable barrier to entry :)
At least you didn't try burning the classroom down like someone did in a chemistry class when i was in school (before you were born probably). Operating a Bunsen Burner near Curtains is never a wise move. They burnt pretty quickly.
Emily was like that once.. but she's been to goodwood, is a fan of heikki, and been to a sidepodparty now :P all you need to do is just keep talking about f1 to them, one day they'll have to take notice
Do they still have gas taps on chemistry benches? That was nevere a good idea
It's starting to get that way, only because I don't shut up about it!
We got the fire department called out to our school because we played a april fool's joke on a teacher using a smoke machine. The Teacher decided to see how much we could fill up the room with smoke!
that's the way to do it! hehe
Yep, they do! We have lots of fun in Chemistry, like we've found a book, my class and my teacher, Dr Outten, called 'Chemisty of Explosives'. Yes, he's buying it for us all to read!
Just don't mention Abu Dhabi. I try to keep it to a minimum.
I am now the office F1 correspondent.
My mate from Trinidad is back there on holiday right now. His only message back so far has not been a 'hello' or even a 'Merry Xmas', just 'The Red Baron is back then' :D
I only mentioned how boring it was, and just said it was a bad idea!
(hearts)
hehe :D
Am I glad that's over
Now I know how Mark Kermode felt having to watch Bride Wars
Thanks to Scott Woodwiss, I have re-bought the first Go West album. 24 years later, and it costs about the same as it did then. One more cassette for the landfill.
scott told you to buy the pet shop boys?
The band Go West, as in 'we close our eyes'
No, he was mentioning getting tickets to see Go West, the band, which in turn had me fishing out the album I had, which in turn had me reminiscing how I liked it at the time.
ooooh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl3PYk_s4Kk
Damn you Mr Bunny for making me see that again
i may have to fire up last.fm. i can barely remember it.
Is that Gary Barlow in the future, goddamn!
hehehe am watching dara o briain on iplayer and he keeps talking about milky bars, and the milky bar kid.... for the first time in years i now have a craving for milky bars...
I got a few films for Xmas lined up to watch.
Network
Office Space
Face
24 Hour Party People
Anyone seen them?
We need to teach Lukeh a few things about forgiveness ;)
we have some.
So I'm working on the second in my series of 2009 review posts on the drivers, and it seems that the more time I spend on it, the more work I need to do!
I want to include Driver Consistency but I only started doing that from the Turkish GP so I'm going to have to do the first 6 races too!
Office Space is one of the best films ever!
Don't mention that name, I have bad memories of Christmas Day with that group!
lordy!
You don't have to watch the video. I ain't looking.
you spent xmas day with take that?
hehehe please and thank you :P
although dara did start talking about it because someone said they were from newport... lol
No, but I had to join in mother's game of Singstar Take That... Horrid.
i thought you might...
It. Must. Be. Done!
It will be a mixture of a few things and then a weighted scoring system. It's going to be a lot of work and may well end up being more than one post!
Classic Peter Finch
Hmm, nope
Not Face/Off ? [If not, no]
Heard nothing but good things
Bassano you have to see Office Space!
Watch out for comfy chairs. I sat on one to watch an hour of something on TV and then it is 4 hours later. Comfy chairs have the secret to time travel.
Evening all. I'm just in from work. It's ruddy cold out there!!
With Jennifer Anniston, really?
Hellloo
Stay at home and pretend to be ill
Oooooh Office Space! I rented that film by accident a few years ago. We were really annoyed we'd picked it up. It might actually be one of the best films I've ever seen. We LOVED it!!!
Hello. I saw 'Where The Wild Things Are' today... it was... different
I can't wait, just for the smashing of office equipment. Reminds me of one day at work when there was a clearout (and a sledgehammer to hand).
Good word.... Have you stamped on anyone's head yet?
Yes. Believe me, it's so funny!
I want to see that
LOVED the book as a child
Spike Jonze's films are. . . interesting
I loved "Being John Malkovich".
No but I may have to get one of those suits the kid is wearing
I wouldn't know the feeling, I've always been me. *rimshot*
I've seen it 2 or 3 times and it still makes me undecided
Is worrth seeing though
OK, it's on the list
My sister's boyfriend was the only one of our group who'd read it, he said the book is very short. At times some of us were quite bored by the film, there seemed to be an amount of filler, however there were several enjoyable parts. Mixed review 6/10
i should try stevens idea and get a comfy chair for my desk. I need the next 6 hours and 18 minutes to go quicker
Olivia Munn's live streaming on UStream
http://twitter.com/oliviamunn
I lost 4 hours
The book is mainly picture freezes. I liked the film. You just need to be expecting a surreal journey rather than actual plot. The soundtrack makes it. I did really enjoy it though. It's pretty bleak :(
I could do that
The soundtrack is very, very good.
I went in not knowing what to expect
It's not exactly brimming with Christmas spirit!!
It's vrery weird!
With Susan Sarandon's daughter, Eva Murri
4 hours would be acceptable. Its amazing how quickly i got into the habit of not working since xmas eve
Just asking for trouble
The chat window is insane!
Right, I'm off to sleep before I go mad or something. Actually... too late.
Isn't it!
Night Tom
night Tom
neither am I :-)
LOL @ "They have TV in Alabama?"
No, me either really. I've just had what might have been the worst day of my life.
night all!
oh dear :-(
G'night dude
Night Tom and Gavin
night Gavin
That bad huh, work?
night Tom and Gavin
That doesn't sound good
I'm sure you've said that before. Or something to that effect.
I thought you were calling me hun for a second there.... Sort of. I think I'm just grumpy.
I've not lived a very long life :P
No, I use hon to abbreviate
Why the bad mood, just seasonal?
:D
This day has been so long, I don't even remember what annoyed me in the first place! I shan't tell Steven what time I got up or he'll sign me off sick for a month!
Suppose I've learned to block out bad days. Once I get home, I completely forget about work, most of the time. Keeps me sane, almost.
Getting up early and working late is a bad combination.
Always
Is the only way
Well, that and a good Merlot
any alcohol will do the trick
I don't know when I managed to get so chubby. I didn't notice it happen. It's bad times. I said this to my friend at work and she was like "oh yeah, you must have put on about a stone...." Charming! :P
#blamenick
Does she understand sign language, or non-verbal communication involving unarmed combat?
I've had a bad decade. I was having a good ole think earlier and nearly set up a new blog to write a post about it, then I decided I was just being silly and '09 has gone a way to redressing the balance.
A while ago I learned to do the same, it is very important to keep 'work' and 'home' lives separate. One of my jobs is to take the mailbags to the sorting office on alternate days. I've got so good at seperating work from home life, by the time I get to town I'm in 'home' mode and often forget about the bags until I park up.
doesn't help in the morning when you have to go back :-)
lol what did he do now?
#blamechristmas
i try not to have any on a school night, except Wednesdays (when its PF quiz night)
ooh alison thats never fun! As pointed out at christmas my 57 year old mother is now thinner than me. I eat ok, i just never exercise. Ever.
No idea but I am sure it must be his fault
aw no!!
This one is true
Heheh I'm not too sensitive about it. I never have time to exercise properly. I've been trying to gym and swim on my way home recently. I was too thin last summer though. I'm sure a happy point exists in the middle!
Morning all
I knew there was flooding in Cumbria but I didn't realise it that *that* bad!
If he's around (and if he's not) Kudos to Mr C for his comment :D
You kid but.....
;)
yeah i saw'd it on the news, am so glad i didnt move up there!
what part do you live in? i love cumbria
I live near Carlisle. I've never had flooding in my town. I lost my job way back in 2005 though when the restaurant I worked in flooded. It's just a lesson in why it's moronic to build on flood planes. There's a lot of space up here.....
A lot of it's too high or too low for people though
Am so gonna visit one year, when it's warmer
Errr really no. There's so much unoccupied space. More than a Londoner could ever imagine :P
That's not hard, I don't even have a window box
I love the journey up the M6 through the scenery to that part of the country.
Oooooh I could give you a tour. Except that I don't really know my way around the bits that tourists like to see. Apparently there are things in the county other than lakes and fells ;)
Having a currency widget and seeing the Vietnamese Dong up near 2002 levels is not helping the winter blues!
I don't usually see touristy things, I like stumbling upon hidden treasures
i've been pretty much every year i've been born, it's totally awesome, especially if you're a walker/biker and even if you're not then theres some awesome pubs and just amazing scenery. it's easily in my top 5 places ive been.
couple of friends and a mountain bike and i'm happy :D
Hmmmm I could just leave you in Barrow. I'm sure you'd discover many treasures!!
time for me to sleep, night all! xx

The problem is now they are talking, there are also rumours about Ralf Schumacher coming back as well. Oh dear
RALF!!! RALF!!! :D :D
*starts to unroll poster*
Kendal has nice Mint Cake, but seriously bad traffic.
boo
oh wow, Hayseed Dixie are coming to my town in March, I have to see them
you mean you took it down? tut tut
what? hahahaha! really??
Have heard they are much fun
I got mocked, incessantly
darn fair weather fans!
You do surprise me
EURGH! That stuff is good for solving diabetic comas and nothing else. Disgusting!!
and making teeth disappear. quickly.
did i mension that i'm the one who does most of hte mocking? it'll come back out if he comes back, but theres not enough room in my room for all my good posters
I went to Edinburgh for Hogmanay, err, 4? years ago and they were on a stage in the street party, lots of fun!
When I was 19, I lived at my foks at wasn't allowed to decorate my bedroom
I covered it in 95% film posters from work
I shoulda taken pics
I managed a video store
did you accidently wipe all the tapes and then try and recreate them all using low budgets?
*hopes someone will get that reference*
:D
Haven't seen that yet, is also on the list
I just have mental images of Mr Bean.....
love that film.
not so much :P
Be Kind: Rewind
:D
from the trailers, it looked awful..
Why do I know the names of films froma vague plot description?
Am I the Steven Roy of the film world?
i agree, but in a so bad it's good way
Because you used to work in a video shop? It's a hard habit to kick....
who ya gonna call?
Someone has to be because I am clueless about films
Maybe, I can't spot a bad film from a trailer at 50 paces
I didn't even ask for that job, they approached me, I was in there a lot mind
ghostbusters
It's easy see....
Plot: Cool Runnings
Film: Star Wars
Jedward?
That's no bad thing
Could've been worse
I'm not good at plot description, but I've freaked out wife and family members when I yell at them from across the house what movie they're watching when they can't figure it out, or when I see a few seconds of a film and identify it, even when I've never seen it.
I've done that :)
Oooh seeing as you are psychic Bassano, I was trying to describe this film where everyone gets hooked on antidepressants. It's quite old.... :S
Requiem for a Dream?
That freaks ME out when I do it.
No no no. I mean like universally. Basically the whole planet is popping like smarties.
THX 1138?
Hmm, haven't seen it. Continue
1) He's dead
2) She's a He
Odd, but worth it though
what a fab game!
Sixth Sense
Tootsie [among others]
go bassano.
Hmmm no. More like a voluntary thing. I can't really remember much more about it. I'm sure it exists and I've seen it. I was trying to talk about it a couple of weeks ago. My friend thought I'd made it up. This isn't helping..... :P
Who's in it?
Stepford Wives?
Errrrr :P
Black and white, or color?
Well, you know
it looks like one of those word math problems you get when you're younger....
1) H
I've also forgotton the name of that Christian Bale film where they are all emotionless....
Not weekend at bernies?
I love that film
Helio Castroneves (or rather, Mrs Helio C) has just had a baby
RT @h3lio http://twitpic.com/vmwq6 - Mikaella - 7.3onces/19in - 3.3kg/48cm
Equilibrium, that's awful
Equilibrium
Gun Kata!
I wasn't advocating it! It just popped into my head when I was trying to remember this other film.
it deleted my comment because i had > in it, forgot they are used as tags
Hamadeus?
He has a baby, she's exhausted....AND THEY TWEET IT!?!!?!
thats just wierd
Que?
That way they fired the guns in Equilibrium.
Was this one film?
Equilibrium. Christian Bale would get sent in and kill everyone in the room with some stupid (and not stupid in a good way) moves.
i give it less than 12 months before a famous birth is live streamed.
1984?
Dark City?
And it'll be Kerry Katona or Jordan.
Channel 4 have already done it
I give the internet 4 months to repeat it
it'll be an american i'm guessing.
better bandwidth :)
famous person?
:D
Oh lord, pray tell he's wrong
Nah, was years ago
No 2 films. And Tootsie wasn't the film I was thinking of, but fitted the description.
I think someone has already livestreamed giving birth, don't think they were famous though.
that one with Jack Lemmon on the train
Not the Wayne's bros. film?
Or Big Mommas House
some like it hot
no
oh! Mrs Doubtfire
This will give it away probably, but one of the actors was in Stargate.
Prozac Nation?
Robin Williams was in Stargate? ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Phm79KpQ_w&feature=topvideos
Love this.
You talking about the movie or one of the thousand TV shows? :)
Hmmm no I've been through this before. Maybe it's just an amazing new film I haven't written yet :P
movie
That's how Mork got home eventually
Garden State?
:D
Crying game. the "she who was a she" is the main baddie.
Thank you
The Oscars gave that away before most got to see it
Possibly
Can you give us nothing else?
Who was in both films?
I'm guessing it's not 1984, Dark City, or Garden State.
Jaye Davidson.
Was Ra in Stargate, and was in Crying Game too.
ah okay
Good luck guessing the other film, I'm off to bed. Will see you when I see you.
Brit movie With Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle.
had Damon Albarn in it. Also Lena Headey, who was in the year below me at school.
What, Sixth Sense?
I'm saying it was a dream
Saying that, I've known someone who had a childhood memory that turned out to be a scene from a film
No the one Alison can't remember
he he sorry.
night Pat
Night Pat
Yeah, thought of that after. Can't remember if I've seen it
Think I have
Lena Heady must've been young then
For those with enough screen real estate, I'm liking the WideMail plugin for Mac

i just ordered a pizza to get delivered at 7pm but the website gave me no sort of order confirmation. I am scared my pizza will never arrive but also too scared to order again in case i end up with two. Dinner dilemma!
do ya normally get confirmation?
i normally order from dominos but this time i went with pizza hut so i have no prior experience to draw from :(
i guess if you wait, you could just order another one?
that shall be my plan of attack but it ruins the 'not having to wait for pizza when i get home from work' aspect. I could ring them when they open and see if they got the order but ugh, phones. Thats not how i work.
every day I discover new things that the upgrade to 2.9 Wordpress messed up ... all previous upgrades went well but this one was one big disaster ...
am steering very well clear. what this time?
:P
it is millions of things ... I can't publish posts once they are ready, I have to go to dashboard first, open the draft (where half the things is lost and have to re-do them) only then the publish works ... I am not allowed to edit almost any settings (your attempt to edit settings failed, try again), my threaded comments appear to be working but they dont , etc etc ... pain ...
can this be related to the hack issue you had a while back? i know people are having issues with 2.9, but surely not that bad?
it should not be the case. I think that something did not go right during the upgrade, some files got messed up ...
probs worth uploading the files ftp.
*via ftp
that is what I did at the end, before I did that I could not even access the admin area ...
talking about those Turkish hackers - an Indian guy tweeted this few days ago:
Successfully broke into Turk Hackers server and deleted all their worms and scripts.
serves them well :-)
ha!
http://twitter.com/amolbharti
oh blimey :(
oh those laid back Aussies ...
That's the flight I am usually taking to Aus GP, so please make sure you keep other planes clear from it at all times ...
boo online faq says i wont get my order without a confirmation number. I blame my mobile browser but why design a site that works all the way until the last step :( now i will have to get home then order then wait. I might starve by then!
Love the response from Virgin Blue :-) :
!!
you've made me hungry... hunting for food is dangerous.
this pizza thing is amazing, you get a box with pizza pasta garlic bread and chicken wings in it. We saw the ad and went "ooh options!" and decided we had to have one. But last night they wanted to charge us a 10% public holiday surcharge. Not cool. I wonder what you can get at 4am.
I live in a totally mad place ...
perfect time to get a notice from the landlord, and the landlord realized that
how is that possible? can anyone afford that hike?
into trouble.
the dirty money from the Mainland China ...
well, and the landlords :-)
:D
that is probably quite true because i doubt christine wants to be woken up to feed you.
indeedy. i should sleep.
night all.
it is crazy, when the bubbles popped in the past, the property prices dropped down instantly, and a lot. this time no. the owners simply held on, some reduced rents a bit, but no drop is sales prices. instead, few months after the Lehamn thing it all started to rise ... totally against the way the overall economy over here is going ...
Morning everyone
I'll add a smiley for good measure :)
a hoy hoy
Where should I go on holiday?
I want to go before the F1 season starts and I want it to be warm and Katherine doesn't like long haul flights...
Spain!
Interesting idea. I have never been to spain.
me neither ;)
I seem to have the impression it's always warm though.
Wiki says "The rain in Spain does not stay mainly in the plain. It falls mainly in the northern mountains"
Ah yes. It's a bit of a myth that one!
The average temperature in Valencia for February is 13 degrees C. Is that warm? I don't know about outside things.
sounds cold to me, but Australia cold. That'd be NZ average.
Brrrrrrrrr!!!
Okay... So it sounds like Spain is out!
is there anywhere warm in the northern hemisphere winter that's not a long haul flight?
I think there probably is. I am just writing a gamboling post about this... It's another requirement of my fictional holiday website. Where is the closest place that is warm.
What is a warm temperature?
I like 25 and above :D
I'd say for a holiday, 20 would be approaching acceptable... You'd still need jumpers in that really. By the time you get to 25 it's warm.
Okay you both seem to agree so that's handy. Cairo gets close and that's in the northern hemisphere.
ooh, Egypt, thats cool.
The max is only 21 though. When does the F1 season start? March?
March indeedy.
I found out today that one of my friends here had Christmas lunch with someone from my home town called Dave who apparently knows me. I don't think I know any Daves from Dunedin who live in Melbourne. She doesn't know his last name because he is a friend of her flatmates. I need to know who it is!
It's a mystery!
I always have this horrible fear that if friends I have now talk to friends I had 10 years ago they will stop being my friend. And I don't know why, it's not like I have any "dirty secrets" in my past, I just feel like I'm a different person. But isn't everyone after 10 years? :D
I get this. I'm also very funny about groups of people mingling! I just hate it for no real reason. School friends shouldn't have to talk to work friends. It's just wrong!!
Yes I've had that before too. Everything nicely compartmentalised seems neater somehow.
Am i banned from all friends ;) ?
Lol. You didn't like my sister. You never get to talk to anyone I know ever again!
Ooh Nick, you didn't like her sister? Dangerous!
I do like her sister!
Her sister doesn't like me!
oooh there must be a reason for that, do tell!
I have no idea, Alison + Alison's Sister = Hyper Combo
Morning all.
COMBO
Why are buses such a daunting and confusing prospect? Morning, by the way.
Morning :)
Alison + Alison's Sister in the cinema still makes me nervous.
Oh dear...
Morning Mrs C, Fun Day ahead?
Grrrr you're all scarred by that cinema conversation. I don't disturb people I promise!!!
Yup. Editing and watching TV, etc.
I went for a walk yesterday and was going to do the same today - starting my New Year resolutions early (outside!) - but it's raining. Boo.
your new years resolution is to go outside? :D
Yup.
sounds like a good one :D
I guess mentioning the weather here wouldnt help?
I might start having palpitations! Too hot!!!!
You don't really need to. You've had the same weather for six months.
It seems I may have forgotten to do Must Comment Monday again. I'm thinking of introducing Totally Late Tuesday to make up for it.
I didn't get a chance yesterday so I will join you in a totally late tuesday too.
I was planning on blogging today. Planning being the key word.
Oooh, yay! Do it!
Oh no, it rained a couple of weeks back (its treated like snow is in the UK)
then there was that day we had a cloud...
the fact it was cool the other day even made the paper,http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/weather/winter-chill-set-to-reach-uae-shores-today-1.558077 (with awesome photo)
but back to same old today ;)
if it never rains, do you have problems with drought conditions?
does wordpress have a way to split a post like the lj-cut tag on livejournal? My post is super loooooong because its a pic-spam.
There should be a More button.
ooh found it. Hooray for blogging ;)
Wooohoo!
Not really, infact they are incredibly wasteful of water here
Afternoon all. What a miserable day.
wow! where does it come from!
Morning!
Amy,
I have been told by an Australian relative that the reason Australia has drought problems is down to bad water management, apparently...
oh thats definitely an issue, but it was already the driest continent on earth to start with which didn't help.
I am blogging too today!
Although I don't think I will be publishing anything today I am doing a good bit of writing :)
I am continuing my mega driver round up post!
Silly British peoples!
Me too. Some more seasonal roundups.
Check out this page: http://ferrarif1forum.com/2009/12/29/ferrari-f2010-f61-development-update/
This is why I work hard for 6 weeks writing a blog post!
THATS AWESOME!!!
Congratulations
Nice :)
It's really cool that F1Technical and a few other forums have used that post and said 'Look what this guy has done'. Honestly, I'm blown away by it!
As you should be :D Its awesome
ditto!
bloggety bloggety. If you can call a pic-spam a blog.
http://daydreamingoutloud.com/2009/12/30/how-to-have-a-kiwi-christmas/
Now I sleep, as just like Christine I am starting my resolution early :D
Excellent. Well done. More blogging is presumably on your resolution list as well :)
erm, no. It's long enough without ones I know I can't keep!
Niiiiiiiight

Wowee... So ICANN who sets up the domain names for everyone in the world has apparently made a really really really big mess up.
Just recently they decided to add non-latin characters to domain names... This means that somebody could buy the chinese alphabet version of sidepodcast.com legitimately right now and get all the traffic of chinese people who use a chinese keyboard.
But worse. In the Russian alphabet their r looks like a p... As this guy has proven you could register a domain that to the user looks exactly like paypal.com but is actually rayral.com (using the russian character). Register that domain and nick their account details: http://blog.collins.net.pr/2009/12/de-latinisation-of-web.html
It was always going to be a problem. I figured they must have thought it through, but... it doesn't seem that way.
It does seem like quite an obvious problem to have missed.
wow... I just cut and pasted that 'paypal.com' link from the comments and it totally sends you off to nowhere (www.xn--yl-6kcb1fc.com, which isn't registered)
I wonder if that particular one is browser related because it doesn't handle the characters properly.
That is exactly what is now supposed to happen. It looks like a weird address to you because your machine isn't showing cyrilic characters. But if it was that would, I think, still show www.paypal.com
Is rayral.com the money transfer system preferred by Scooby-Doo?
it only transfers scooby snacks.
I'm sure these'll just buff right out: http://jalopnik.com/5435625/the-30-most-expensive-car-crashes-of-2009
At least some of them were wrecked on the track
One of them is Danish Professional Footballer and World-Class Idiot, Nicklas Bendtner :D
Thats because he plays for Arsenal.
Was a safety car deployed during the Malaysian Grand Prix this year?
For the last laps I think
I heard the announcement that other alphabets could be used and it was so obvious that it would cause problems.
many, many folks mentioned the cyrillic issue.
This is a weird question... but does anyone know of a place where I could go to find track dimensions? I'm specifically looking for the width of the track in a starting grid area. Silverstone, if I had to be specific.
I may be able to give you the minimum width that it has to be?
There are a few Cyrilic letters that looks like standard Latin letters but are different. Their N looks exactly the same as our H. Their V looks like our B.
Is it not on the Silverstone site?
I'm looking, but haven't found it. They have circuit maps and their lengths, but not the width from what I can tell. Still looking.
Widths at shanghai range between 13m to 15m on the straight, which is close enough for what I'm looking to do (a lego starting grid, so I don't have to be exact :D)
I can't find the info on any authorotative site but there are a few quoting 15m
http://www.f1sa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10626&Itemid=219
Thanks, I'll go with 15m
I am sure AUTOSPORT do a proper track guids with widths on it. Probably a season preview.
i think browsers are meant to flag domains with non-latin characters.
i guess the problem icann had, was that while they can't solve the issue, it didn't seem right to keep the internet an exclusively western utility.
. o O ( We can't have... FOR'NERS on our internet!! )
:)
it's also worth pointing out that the paypal.com url does display the correct characters in the url bar.
good man!
Yeah, that's the first thing I checked.
But if I cut and paste it into my iterm window, it shows up with a bunch of question marks, looks like iterm doesnt handle it properly.
Thanks guys!

:)
It doesn't make sense in Cyrilic as they have nothing that looks like an l or L for that matter.
Best. Venn. Diagram. EVAR!
That's awesome!
How much work can they do on the engine now anyway?
ahh, how i love mindless abuse
They really should give up on the engine freeze. Alianora had it right last year when she said it was not an engine freeze and more of an engine sorbet. Now it looks like it has melted completely if they are going to allow tweaks to reduce fuel consumption.
:)
Mmmm Chorizo!
It's an engine Slush Puppy now!
Well it is pretty stupid to "freeze" development, then change the blasted rules during the "freeze"
Indeed. I'm with ya on that bro!
After I posted my fuel consumption analysis, a lot of people on forums who posted my graph were saying that although the Ferrari was one of the worst for fuel consumption, they have lobbied the FIA to refine the engine so it's more frugal...
I like that. It's like Apple operating systems. Every year it gets a new name. Last year was the year of the sorbet and this year is the year of the Slush Puppy.
The guy whose father owned Slush Puppy used to race but I can't think of his name.
FIA logic. This is not the first change. We already had the rev limit reduction.
and the best prepared new team for 2010, are the ones not competing:
Stefanovich has said that the team's first car, based on the 2010 Toyota, passed the latest of its FIA crash tests last week - but that it may be submitted for the rear one again because it was found that the design in this area could be made lighter still.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80693
Do they know something we don't?
I think they're betting at least one of the new teams won't make the grid, and I think that's a pretty safe bet.
This "Feast of the Innocents" stuff is getting confusing - I'd had to myth-bust two different stories today because of people looking at stories on sites (one Spanish, the other probably GMM-sourced) and assuming they were true, even though December 28 is the Spanish/Latin American equivalent of April Fool's Day...
That's not counting the "Piquet Jr. to Campos" story that was myth-busted by a different forum member before I got there...
ahh cool. what were they claiming?
So if I was a betting man giving odds, I would give the new teams the following odds of being on the grid:
Notus: 11/12
Sgt. Branson's Lonely Heart Club F1 Team: 7/8
Campos: 3/5
StefanF1: 2/5
USF1: 1/3
and the best prepared new team for 2010, are the ones not competing:
Do they know something we don't? {Comment #417}
They're determined to get on the grid whether it's practical for them to do so or not, and they don't mind how long they wait until they get there.
Note that there are no major technical redesigns planned for 2011 yet, so in theory some of these crash tests could still be valid then even if Stefan GP doesn't make 2010.
Mind you, if all this is because they lack confidence in Campos and/or USF1, I can't entirely blame them...
:D :D
ahh cool. what were they claiming? {Comment #421}
- Kubica to Ferrari for the first three races of 2010, possibly extended beyond that depending on how quick Massa's neck healed (clue: Ferrari already have a reserve driver)
- Ralf Schumacher to Toro Rosso (clue: Toro Rosso already have two contracted drivers (albeit only one is on the entry list), and bonus: it contains GMM)
- Nelson Piquet's dad bought 15% of Campos and his son got more sponsorship than Vitaly Petrov and Pastor Maldonado, leading him to get a seat at Campos (this is the rumour that was myth-busted before I got there)
Good point, when are Toro Rosso gonna confirm Alguesuari?
Thought this might interest http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/mobile/health/8429715.stm
Not f1. But could be useful for those who have spent too much time around loud engines?
I think they are struggling to decide which nickname to use
Does this mean the "Submit Comment" button is working properly again? The writing's gone back to black for name, mail and website. Between posting my last comment here and this one, the "Submit Comment" had turned into a hyperlink from my previous comment (I must have forgotten to close it correctly).
Typically, this was after I reported the problem by comment in the podcast megamix thread. Oops.
Actually, what is the point of Toro Rosso anymore? If I was StefanF1, I would make a run at Red Bull to see how much that grid slot is to the Austrians. I think the Russian just might have enough money to waste on that if he really wants to get in this year.
I fixed your original comment, Alia.
They'll be the new Minardi, erm, again.
Interesting theory. I always thought that one the tinnitus existed it could never be treated
He is not Russian. He is Serbian.
Opps. Right church, wrong pew.
so they said. Although I've been ignoring mine successfully for years or self-treating with White noise and I'm not uncommon in doing so
I'm doing something very foolish.
Writing a blog post using ONLY the wordpress editor. I should have learned my lesson a long time ago and write these things in a text editor so I can put it under version control I trust.
Windows Live Writer. That is all.
The man is talking sense here.
I don't do Windows. Or anything Microsoft related if I can help it.
Textmate (or vi) + subversion is what I SHOULD be using.
Just use open office word equivalent then?
I'm a programmer/sysadmin at heart, all I need is a text editor. I don't need anything so near as heavy duty as any of those things to write HTML or code of any sort.
If I need to write a word document for class or something I usually use google docs.
Then use google docs. I just meant something with a spell checker...
bah, I don't need a spell checker!
. o O ( runs the document through a spell checker, but no one will ever know! )
I can't remember what does it, but something is doing spellchecking in Chrome here, because I get a reddline under something if I misspell it in an editing window.
I always use a spell checker.
nice idea.
The nice thing about programming is if you misspell something language related (built in function, class, etc.) it won't run, and if you misspell your variable the same way every time, it'll work! :D
Right, I have now finished the Driver Consistency Data for all of 2009. Was a lot of work!
Now I need to make graphs and then look at some sort of weighted scoring system... but it's dinner soon and I need a break!
the more I use google voice the more I like it.
do you have any spare invites going? dont worry if not
us only, isn't it?
*US
no idea
Fine! Have it! ;)
evening all.
:)
howdy.
we have an invite. it just doesn't work.
ah ok, not to worry then
Helllo Mr Lukeh
question for y'all. christine's doing the montage show, and we're trying to find the voicemail from stuart that says something like:
"grr, buy gp+ or DT will feed you to his dog, grr"
but we cannot find it in any show. if anyone can remember, that would be a great help.
Unfortunately I think Mr C. is correct and it's US only.
My only annoyance is right now when someone calls my google voice number on my iphone, I have to press "1", which means I need to press the button that gets me to the keypad, then press 1.
sidepodradio?
it was around that time, but i swear it was a debrief.
You guys have your F1 teams, and I have google voice. Is this a fair tradeoff? I dunno...
I'm thinking in the summer...
might be why i can't find it. shall go back farther.
I'm guessing this is from a non-transcripted show?
Evening all
hey chap. i can't remember what we said either :)
Nice to see good research going into this
Can't you search for "plus"?
Tried searching a lot of things. Thought it might be in the show notes.
Yeah that's what I was looking for too. No luck :(
Or "Stuart"
If I were to write a mythical "guest post", what email address would I send it to?
[email protected]
;)

it is quite amusing to see which news outlets ran with the made up stories. crash let themselves down spectacularly:
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/155608/1/piquet_money_to_give_jr_a_second_chance.html
even after the original source confirmed it was all a hoax, still no update:

I swear A Levels are designed to kill you.
Hi everyone.
Hi Lou
I'm told it gets a bit easier at Uni
Hiya.
What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger?
Just a few more months then no more!! :)
I don't mind if it's not easy... but atm i'm revising for subjects i'm not going to be studying next year and it seems a little pointless. Would very much like to be doing photography right now.
I am very impressed at the legend that is Danny Wallace and his knowledge of Ghostbusters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R2qqtkYzTE
hmmm .
Technically, you're practising for Uni Qualy :)
What are A levels?
16 - 18 year olds take 3 or 4 subjects prior to Uni for 2 years
Far too many kids leave school at 16 these days, though it's getting better
They're after Owl-levels. Didn't you know lou attends Hogwarts? ;)
eehehe
:D :D
The whole point of education is to teach you things that they tell you are vital and then tell you at the start of the following year to forget everything you have learned.
I'm pretty sure NEWT's (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests) come after OWL's (Ordinary Wizarding Levels)
:D
ahaha i'm starting to believe that...am struggling to accept that knowing the in depth history of europe between 1890 and 1990 is really going to help my career as a photographer tbh.
well. they didn't invent photography in 1991.
At your age I had no interest in history and avoided studying it. After I left school I started finding out about some of the more interesting periods of history and some of the more interesting aspects and since then I can't get enough.
It won't help you with your career but the more you learn about it the better you will understand the world.
On the plus side, it'll make you better at getting the yellow slice in Trivial Pursuit
:)
hehe i know.. although that is the year i was born in :) ..
the first camera was technically invented in like 1822... would be nice if there was a module on the history of photography, but i suppose that comes next year...
But the original cameras did not record a picture
I don't know about European history, but the camera played a big role in the American Civil War.
don't get me wrong.. i enjoy history.. but this 2,000 word coursework essay is painful.
that is true. First camera to record a permanent picture was 1822 i think?
I know it was first kinda used by Britain to record war images for the civil war, can't remember the name of the photographer though.
I don't think it was lorrenzo but you can always ask him :P
in that case your 2,000 words are clearly not enough ;)
i mean crimean war... :s
haha sadly international relations don't cover photography... they would do if i were in charge but.. hey ho ;)
i would if he would just reply to my email! :(
Boo, I thought he replied. I'm going mad. :(
hehehe tis okay, have much to deal with atm anyway, hopefully he'll reply after the festive period :)
Received, thank you :)
Evening.
hello chap.
Anything exciting happen today? More Ralf rumours, perhaps?
Franck's gonna be at ASI again this year
http://www.autosport-international.com/public/node/7183
Second from bottom ;)
next*
lots of made-up spanish rumours, swiftly followed by poor
journalistswebsite editors falling for it.Have a great time at ASI, Christine :P
Ha, didn't realise it was the start of April already!
it was yesterday in spain. hence the confusion.
Ah, those crazy Spaniards. Gotta love them! :D
Yum!
Broccoli & Stilton soup, who knew that would work so well?
I want one of these t-shirts:
http://www.bustedtees.com/boringnascar
I've got one.
EVERYONE in the office said to me: "You MUST show it to Chris". He's a Nascar nut. I did. If only I could have taken a picture of the look on his face. WELL worth it.
aww i've finally actually seen the doughnuts Jenson did at the end of the Abu Dhubi GP.. they aren't that impressive. A nice thought though :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0DD_0Jqk5E
Well, that's put me in a bad mood, yay. So much so, I'm not even bothering with this draft list of reasons why people mistake me for James May for now.
Wassup? The opinion thing on twitter?
Yeah.
I fixed your original comment, Alia. {Comment #431}
Thank you very much, Christine. Lucky Sidepodcast has people like you involved with it to stop me from making so much of a fool of myself :)
I _LOVE_ that sound as he guns the engine.
Ignore it, tis just people being silly buggers. You're entitled to your own opinion and people who think you're wrong for your own likings, well it's their problem. Just try and ignore it :)
I'm trying. Problem is, I'm not very good at letting go of that sort of thing. Oh well.
Alia, just wanted to ask - how many people altogether have entered the karting event in January?
Actually, what is the point of Toro Rosso anymore? {Comment #430}
Extra brand exposure plus development of young drivers for the A-team (by the time Vettel or Webber move on, Buemi and/or Alguersuari should be ready to help out with the senior team's ambitions). The chassis-sharing thing just saved some money while it lasted.
I'm like that, like with that stupid facebook thing last night. But it's really not worth the hassle to worry over especially if it's gonna put you off doing things
Yeah, cheers for the help.
Nice video of Lewis at Brookland earlier this year (I hadn't seen it before, at least): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9mv0Jmcy64&feature=related
i can't believe you didn't want one when christine wore it :(
Alia, just wanted to ask - how many people altogether have entered the karting event in January? {Comment #533}
12 confirmed and paid. The venue's insisted on a minimum of 15 paid places, so although I have the money to go ahead, I'm looking for three more people to join in the karting if possible, simply because the more the merrier.
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/29/scream-if-you-wanna-go-faster/
Eh? I must have missed that one.
Have worn it a few times on the live stream this year.
So people can still take part and pay the entry fee, even though the deadline's passed? Not that that's a problem for me this time round :P
So people can still take part and pay the entry fee, even though the deadline's passed? Not that that's a problem for me this time round :P {Comment #543}
Yes. Though I need to modify the blog page to make that clear (it's still saying "entries closed")...
However, there are definitely only 3 places remaining, so please tell me as soon as possible if you want to come.
I see. Personally I don't remember it but I believe ya. :P
I still want a Michael Who? shirt if that's any consellation. ;)
Mr C wears that one. That's no consolation at all :)
Ah. Bugger. Erm...
They're available at the merch store
Mr C... how long have you been able to extend the comment box?... that's kinda cool.
ummmm?
I'm sure that's just a normal feature for Chrome with any kind of box like that
I swear A Levels are designed to kill you. {Comment #477}
That's in case anyone wants to go into medicine or something (I hear they're pretty steep learning curves even after A-Level). Most other uni subjects have easy first years if you survive A-Levels in a creditable fashion and study well in uni.
oooooh okay, i don't normally use Chrome this much.
ahh yes. chrome and safari.
It's because, apparently, Chrome is based on Safari's engine, loosely.
In Chrome you can adjust the size of the box you are commenting in... i've not noticed it on any other site before, but then again i haven't used chrome in a while. didn't mean to panic you :)
Are you talking about the comment box in the doohickey?
Freshman (say, age 19) year in most majors over here is usually the toughest (at least in my experience). They're the classes used to torture students.
Like your A levels, I guess :D
yep and in ye olde comments... :)
Can't do that in Firefox
What are A levels? {Comment #485}
The academic qualification between GCSEs and degree-type qualifications.
Most people who do them do them between 16-18, but some people do take them later on - I have an AS-Level (half an A-Level) in Spanish that I took the year after I left university, and there was a story that someone in the "year above" me was approaching 80 and took theoretical language qualifications as a post-retirement hobby...
There are 6 modules in a full A-Level and one of the bugbears of every A-Level student and many of their teachers is that each of these must be separately assessed (either through coursework or exam) and, in the first instance, that assessment must be in the year the module material is taught. Or at least, that's been the situation since 2000 - the old syllabus had a more traditional long exam (and, sometimes, coursework) at the end of the two-year course covering all aspects of the qualification.
Then there's the whole mess that is module re-sits, which means doing about 66% of the work again to repeat the assessment for that module and maybe getting a few extra marks. Often worth it due to the boost in grade frequently generated, but very very stressful.
This is probably contributing to lou's unhappiness at her situation.
The whole point of education is to teach you things that they tell you are vital and then tell you at the start of the following year to forget everything you have learned. {Comment #491}
That didn't happen to me... ...my teachers taught me stuff they told me was vital, and it was... ...right until I left university and discovered what I really needed were qualifications in Office Politics, Knocking Sense Into Law-Breaking Fools, Cynicism and Stupidity...
I'm pretty sure NEWT's (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests) come after OWL's (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) {Comment #492}
Maybe A-Levels are afterwards (standing for Auror Levels?) ;)
He's not the only one keeping busy, Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/29/f1-debrief-2009-in-audio/

Oh, you have that "general education requirement", among other things, that complicates matters. It seems every advanced educational system has its nightmare year...
I'm feeling better now I've realised it's pointless arguing or worrying. Time to go back to working out why people think I'm James May.
Just wondering mr C, as an idea... when you rate a post, how about a way to go back to the post you just rated? I guess you could just press back on the browser window though...
Jackie's Tremayne - still lovin' it!
back button is a temporary requirement. can add a link though certainly.
You need a link like Alex had for Fourstar on the advent.
Well I'm off to watch some bill bailey and his remarkable guide to the orchestra. G'night everyone. :)
night lukeh
Night sir.
See ya Lukeh
Hope the thaw comes overnight for ya
Just found an old bit on F1 Minute about Briatore being announced as going to be working with the commercial rights holder of F1 to improve the show. As he's been excluded from F1 due the the whole Singapore business, does that mean he's no longer in there too?
at the moment, yes. but his trial is next week i believe.
In theory, yes, that's the intent
Will he bother to show up for this one?
Ah, thought so, just checking though.
:)
anyone have a droid or know anyone with one?
http://www.f1minute.com/podcast/#comment-7996
presumably it's android, so what we need is an android f1 minute app?
It's the new Motorola Android phone
Has been very well received apparently
Surely it has a podcast facility
Just noticed this
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/12/14/a-positive-asset/
It says Heikki McLaren, just a heads up ;)
The problem with Android is all the varieties
don't know, shall investigate.
Yeah, saw that too, didn't want to make a fuss though ;)
that's true, but if 2.1 comes to the g1, they'll all be on the same OS, right?
hehe! fixed.
Pass
Am not too au fait to be honest
I guess you need all the manufacturers to issue updates at the same time

morning all. I could get used to this "3 day week" thing.
Hi Amy
Hi Amy.
Did the pizza arrive?
i ordered another one when i got home. Very tasty!
2 Pizze in a day
That good huh
Wow, 2 pizzas in 1 day. I have to be a good boy to get that. Explains why I never do... :)
Amy ordered one online but didn't get order confirmation so wasn't sure if it would be delivered or not. I assume she found out that it wasn't going to be delivered so ordered a replacement rather than eating the first one then having seconds.
Oh I see. Yes.
Interesting shirt? Floppy hair? Slight Bristol accent? Obsessions with propelled vehicles?
;)
Ah, you'll have to read my blog post on it, which, coincidentally, has just appeared. http://wp.me/pA27v-X
the delivery guy was odd, he was waiting so far out on the street that i got locked out of my building because normally they wait by the door so i dont have to take my swipe card down. Im glad my flatmate was home so she could buzz me back in.
Oooh, another blog to subscribe to!!
Clearly, the shameless plug worked! :D
I don't know how I missed this until now but diMontezemolo is whingeing again and threatening to pull Ferrari out of F1 at the end of 2012. No-one believes that least of all Todt. As usual for di Montezemolo a lot of his ideas are insane.
He is not happy with the manufacturers pullng out and being replaced with small teams. We all know why that is. When there are lots of fat manufacturers on the grid Ferrari are successful. When there are a lot of professional racing teams around they are not quites as successful.
ah well I timed that right then! :)
nice post btw
Thank you, clearly all that time spent thinking about this mystery today has paid off.
Waits patiently...
gosh, doesnt dimonty look tired?
my bet is 6 mins past.
:D
Didn't realise he was 62
I have no idea what you two are on about
Is that the new magic time?
Luca Di Montezemolo
Obvious really I suppose.
we'll see.
christine schedules for one minute past. the new scheduler runs every five mins and presumably runs like clockwork so misses the post by one minute.
I speak antipodean quite fluently ;)
Wouldn't it be five minutes past then?
so would it not be at 12.05 then?
true.
If it's scheduled for 12:01 and is just missed, it won't be picked up until 12:06 again
Ding, it's here.
yeah, but Mr C says it missed it by 1 minute and goes every 5 so technically should be .05 but clearly it has a mind of it's own ;) *wont admit he's wrong*
not antipodean so much as "you expect me to be able to spell that?" and a little bit of "im on my phone and predictive text might explode if i try" :D
Oh, I see. Am with ya now
If the scheduler runs at 12:00 then 12:05...
I think that's actually the definition

*shrugs*
I share Jon's prediliction for precision
*predilection (your spelling has other meanings that i've discovered as i didn't know what it meant!)
Though not always when it comes to spelling predilection
I don't know how I missed this until now but diMontezemolo is whingeing again and threatening to pull Ferrari out of F1 at the end of 2012. {Comment #608}
You missed it because Luca comes out with the same threat about once every 6 months. It's all part of the game of political leverage, nothing more (at least this time round).
