It is Allan McNish's birthday today, and as it is drawing nearer to January, he must be getting prepared for the Autosport International show. Just like DC, we have seen him up in Birmingham pretty much every year that we have been. Although we still haven't decided if we'll go this year. Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • All the talk is of US F1 at the moment, as they came out and said their silence over recent weeks has been on purpose and hasn't necessarily been because they haven't nothing to say. The problem is now they are talking, there are also rumours about Ralf Schumacher coming back as well. Oh dear.
  • Abu Dhabi organisers have confirmed that there will be no changes to the pit lane exit, despite the fact there were plenty of concerns during the 2009 race. Granted, nothing untoward happened, but that didn't settle any fears over the dangerous tunnel element to the exit. They say all changes there will be minor, and they aren't worried about it.
  • Jean Todt is bringing old friends in to the FIA now, with the news that Gilles Simon, an ex-engine guy for the red team, has been brought in to advise on future technology and greener initiatives. The FIA are still trying to recover from the KERS debacle, so fresh blood may be what's needed.

That should do it for now, let us know what you're up to, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

so. i fixed the scheduler so that daily posts appear on time, and somebody forgets to write one.

what kind of test is that?

At least you didn't try burning the classroom down like someone did in a chemistry class when i was in school (before you were born probably). Operating a Bunsen Burner near Curtains is never a wise move. They burnt pretty quickly.

We got the fire department called out to our school because we played a april fool's joke on a teacher using a smoke machine. The Teacher decided to see how much we could fill up the room with smoke!

Yep, they do! We have lots of fun in Chemistry, like we've found a book, my class and my teacher, Dr Outten, called 'Chemisty of Explosives'. Yes, he's buying it for us all to read!

So I'm working on the second in my series of 2009 review posts on the drivers, and it seems that the more time I spend on it, the more work I need to do!

I want to include Driver Consistency but I only started doing that from the Turkish GP so I'm going to have to do the first 6 races too!

I've had a bad decade. I was having a good ole think earlier and nearly set up a new blog to write a post about it, then I decided I was just being silly and '09 has gone a way to redressing the balance.

Suppose I've learned to block out bad days. Once I get home, I completely forget about work, most of the time. Keeps me sane, almost.

A while ago I learned to do the same, it is very important to keep 'work' and 'home' lives separate. One of my jobs is to take the mailbags to the sorting office on alternate days. I've got so good at seperating work from home life, by the time I get to town I'm in 'home' mode and often forget about the bags until I park up.

I live near Carlisle. I've never had flooding in my town. I lost my job way back in 2005 though when the restaurant I worked in flooded. It's just a lesson in why it's moronic to build on flood planes. There's a lot of space up here.....

The Oscars gave that away before most got to see it

  • F1Wolf29/12/2009 at 03:47

oh those laid back Aussies ...

An air safety investigation has been launched to find out how a Cathay Pacific (SEHK: 0293) plane carrying 309 passengers ended up seconds away from a potential collision with another passenger jet as it flew over Australia.

The Airbus A330 was on its way to Melbourne on December 22 when the cockpit crew realised that a Virgin Blue Boeing 737 was flying towards it on the same route and altitude over Australia's Northern Territory.

The pilot of Cathay Pacific flight 135, almost full as expatriates headed home for Christmas, climbed 300 metres to 11,500 metres and veered to the right after alerting air traffic control. The crew of the Virgin Blue jet, flying from Melbourne to Darwin with 120 passengers, also spotted the danger and turned around to move out of the path of the A330.

The two planes were 20 nautical miles apart at the time they changed course south of Darwin. With both flying at cruising speeds of 700km/h to 800km/h, they were only seconds from a potential collision.

That's the flight I am usually taking to Aus GP, so please make sure you keep other planes clear from it at all times ...

it is crazy, when the bubbles popped in the past, the property prices dropped down instantly, and a lot. this time no. the owners simply held on, some reduced rents a bit, but no drop is sales prices. instead, few months after the Lehamn thing it all started to rise ... totally against the way the overall economy over here is going ...

is there anywhere warm in the northern hemisphere winter that's not a long haul flight?

I think there probably is. I am just writing a gamboling post about this... It's another requirement of my fictional holiday website. Where is the closest place that is warm.

    What is a warm temperature?

  • Amy29/12/2009 at 09:37

    I like 25 and above :D

  • Alison29/12/2009 at 09:38

I'd say for a holiday, 20 would be approaching acceptable... You'd still need jumpers in that really. By the time you get to 25 it's warm.

  • Alex Andronov29/12/2009 at 09:40

    #MFC

Wowee... So ICANN who sets up the domain names for everyone in the world has apparently made a really really really big mess up.

Just recently they decided to add non-latin characters to domain names... This means that somebody could buy the chinese alphabet version of sidepodcast.com legitimately right now and get all the traffic of chinese people who use a chinese keyboard.

But worse. In the Russian alphabet their r looks like a p... As this guy has proven you could register a domain that to the user looks exactly like paypal.com but is actually rayral.com (using the russian character). Register that domain and nick their account details: http://blog.collins.net.pr/2009/12/de-latinisation-of-web.html

It was always going to be a problem. I figured they must have thought it through, but... it doesn't seem that way.

wow... I just cut and pasted that 'paypal.com' link from the comments and it totally sends you off to nowhere (www.xn--yl-6kcb1fc.com, which isn't registered)

I wonder if that particular one is browser related because it doesn't handle the characters properly.

That is exactly what is now supposed to happen. It looks like a weird address to you because your machine isn't showing cyrilic characters. But if it was that would, I think, still show www.paypal.com

There are a few Cyrilic letters that looks like standard Latin letters but are different. Their N looks exactly the same as our H. Their V looks like our B.

After I posted my fuel consumption analysis, a lot of people on forums who posted my graph were saying that although the Ferrari was one of the worst for fuel consumption, they have lobbied the FIA to refine the engine so it's more frugal...

and the best prepared new team for 2010, are the ones not competing:

Stefanovich has said that the team's first car, based on the 2010 Toyota, passed the latest of its FIA crash tests last week - but that it may be submitted for the rear one again because it was found that the design in this area could be made lighter still.

This "Feast of the Innocents" stuff is getting confusing - I'd had to myth-bust two different stories today because of people looking at stories on sites (one Spanish, the other probably GMM-sourced) and assuming they were true, even though December 28 is the Spanish/Latin American equivalent of April Fool's Day...

I think they're betting at least one of the new teams won't make the grid, and I think that's a pretty safe bet.

So if I was a betting man giving odds, I would give the new teams the following odds of being on the grid:

    Notus: 11/12

Sgt. Branson's Lonely Heart Club F1 Team: 7/8

    Campos: 3/5

    StefanF1: 2/5

    USF1: 1/3

They're determined to get on the grid whether it's practical for them to do so or not, and they don't mind how long they wait until they get there.

Note that there are no major technical redesigns planned for 2011 yet, so in theory some of these crash tests could still be valid then even if Stefan GP doesn't make 2010.

Mind you, if all this is because they lack confidence in Campos and/or USF1, I can't entirely blame them...

    - Kubica to Ferrari for the first three races of 2010, possibly extended beyond that depending on how quick Massa's neck healed (clue: Ferrari already have a reserve driver)

    - Ralf Schumacher to Toro Rosso (clue: Toro Rosso already have two contracted drivers (albeit only one is on the entry list), and bonus: it contains GMM)

    - Nelson Piquet's dad bought 15% of Campos and his son got more sponsorship than Vitaly Petrov and Pastor Maldonado, leading him to get a seat at Campos (this is the rumour that was myth-busted before I got there)

Unfortunately I think Mr C. is correct and it's US only.

My only annoyance is right now when someone calls my google voice number on my iphone, I have to press "1", which means I need to press the button that gets me to the keypad, then press 1.

Extra brand exposure plus development of young drivers for the A-team (by the time Vettel or Webber move on, Buemi and/or Alguersuari should be ready to help out with the senior team's ambitions). The chassis-sharing thing just saved some money while it lasted.

  • Alianora La Canta29/12/2009 at 21:33

    What are A levels? {Comment #485}

The academic qualification between GCSEs and degree-type qualifications.

Most people who do them do them between 16-18, but some people do take them later on - I have an AS-Level (half an A-Level) in Spanish that I took the year after I left university, and there was a story that someone in the "year above" me was approaching 80 and took theoretical language qualifications as a post-retirement hobby...

There are 6 modules in a full A-Level and one of the bugbears of every A-Level student and many of their teachers is that each of these must be separately assessed (either through coursework or exam) and, in the first instance, that assessment must be in the year the module material is taught. Or at least, that's been the situation since 2000 - the old syllabus had a more traditional long exam (and, sometimes, coursework) at the end of the two-year course covering all aspects of the qualification.

Then there's the whole mess that is module re-sits, which means doing about 66% of the work again to repeat the assessment for that module and maybe getting a few extra marks. Often worth it due to the boost in grade frequently generated, but very very stressful.

This is probably contributing to lou's unhappiness at her situation.

    The whole point of education is to teach you things that they tell you are vital and then tell you at the start of the following year to forget everything you have learned. {Comment #491}

That didn't happen to me... ...my teachers taught me stuff they told me was vital, and it was... ...right until I left university and discovered what I really needed were qualifications in Office Politics, Knocking Sense Into Law-Breaking Fools, Cynicism and Stupidity...

  • Alianora La Canta29/12/2009 at 21:37

    I'm pretty sure NEWT's (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests) come after OWL's (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) {Comment #492}

Maybe A-Levels are afterwards (standing for Auror Levels?) ;)

Freshman (say, age 19) year in most majors over here is usually the toughest (at least in my experience). They're the classes used to torture students.

    Like your A levels, I guess :D {Comment #558}

Oh, you have that "general education requirement", among other things, that complicates matters. It seems every advanced educational system has its nightmare year...

Just found an old bit on F1 Minute about Briatore being announced as going to be working with the commercial rights holder of F1 to improve the show. As he's been excluded from F1 due the the whole Singapore business, does that mean he's no longer in there too?

It's the new Motorola Android phone

that's true, but if 2.1 comes to the g1, they'll all be on the same OS, right?

Amy ordered one online but didn't get order confirmation so wasn't sure if it would be delivered or not. I assume she found out that it wasn't going to be delivered so ordered a replacement rather than eating the first one then having seconds.

I don't know how I missed this until now but diMontezemolo is whingeing again and threatening to pull Ferrari out of F1 at the end of 2012. No-one believes that least of all Todt. As usual for di Montezemolo a lot of his ideas are insane.

He is not happy with the manufacturers pullng out and being replaced with small teams. We all know why that is. When there are lots of fat manufacturers on the grid Ferrari are successful. When there are a lot of professional racing teams around they are not quites as successful.

    Obvious really I suppose.

  • me30/12/2009 at 00:04

    we'll see.

christine schedules for one minute past. the new scheduler runs every five mins and presumably runs like clockwork so misses the post by one minute.

  • Bassano30/12/2009 at 00:05

    true.

  • Bassano30/12/2009 at 00:06

If it's scheduled for 12:01 and is just missed, it won't be picked up until 12:06 again

yeah, but Mr C says it missed it by 1 minute and goes every 5 so technically should be .05 but clearly it has a mind of it's own ;) *wont admit he's wrong*

  • Amy30/12/2009 at 00:09

not antipodean so much as "you expect me to be able to spell that?" and a little bit of "im on my phone and predictive text might explode if i try" :D

You missed it because Luca comes out with the same threat about once every 6 months. It's all part of the game of political leverage, nothing more (at least this time round).
