It is Bank Holiday Monday in the UK, granted to us because Boxing Day fell at the weekend. There is still little to go on in the news stakes, which is a breath of fresh air and means we have been able to get other stuff done. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The 2009 Season Review Megamix was released yesterday, featuring a summary of the year just gone from our excellent listeners. Everything from the downpour at Malaysia to the replacement of Bourdais is covered, and it's great to get views from a variety of eloquent F1 fans.
  • We have a new blog to join in the F1 fun - Tom G, who recently got a mention in the podcast, has set up A Little Bit... Piquet. There's only an intro post for now, but I'm sure the rest of the entries won't be a little bit Piquet at all.
  • Recently I posted a roundup of the Advent Calendar podcast - a breakdown of all the shows with descriptions for each - in place of an omnibus edition of the extended podcast. At three minutes each, that omnibus would be about 75 minutes long. I'm pretty certain Mr C would not approve of such things!

That's all for now, although just a quick reminder to everyone (but also to me) that it is Must Comment Monday today, so keep an eye on all those F1 blogs.

Mr C says he is determined to both remember and do MCM justice this week. I will do the same, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

at my house. I don't need specific ideas because I assume none of you are familiar with Melbourne. But general 'the shops' 'the beach' 'the park' 'the river' 'the city' sort of ideas :D

Lou is desperate to go to the zoo but can't. Do you have a zoo you could visit and tell her about it.

come to think of it, I wonder if I have pictures of the baby panda from the National Zoo in DC. I know I took pictures, I just don't know if they're in my aperture library.

  • Amy28/12/2009 at 00:47

Lou is desperate to go to the zoo but can't. Do you have a zoo you could visit and tell her about it.

The zoo is 1.5km away and well within walking distance. The elephant is pregnant. I am too cheap to pay the $24.40 to get in though.

  • Amy28/12/2009 at 00:47

Sidepodtime is weirder than I thought or there is some weird gravity in sidepodcast towers

its 21 at the moment. It feels warmer. Might be a bit far to throw the camera to me though.

Sidepodtime is weirder than I thought or there is some weird gravity in sidepodcast towers

There's a weird gravity, I'm actually 5 feet closer to it than I was earlier, I'm sure...

  • Pat W28/12/2009 at 00:51

I did a 25% distance race at Albert Park on the Wii (14 laps). Seemed to go in a flash although the preamble with practice/qualifying seemed to take a while despite copious skipping. I came 3rd, which was odd because in the pre-race sessions I was up to 6sec/lap faster - I pitted once too many times I think.

Then I did lots of challenges which were fun.

  • lou28/12/2009 at 00:51

I don't really approve of that list. Some of those films are really duff! Up is awesome though!!

  • Pat W28/12/2009 at 01:33

    8 here

3xLOTR, District 9, Batman Begins, The Prestige, Requiem For A Dream, Eternal Sunshine.

The only one of those I'd question being in any 'Top' list is The Prestige..

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 01:33

  • Alison28/12/2009 at 01:34

That explains it then! District 9 was a total pile of rubbish and Avatar is basically Pocahontas with blue people....

Oh my goodness, am just having a search through the Renault Sport media bit and found 28 pages of a tour of the Renault Factory inc driver development bits and louise goodmans media training that the WSR did.

I just didn't find it very innovative. My friends all rave aboutit and it annoys me. They all go on about how they had such an affinity with the aliens towards the end and how clever the filmmaking was. I just think they're heathens. I felt sorry for the aliens right at the start :( Poor prawns :(

I just think James Cameron has been obtuse with the making of Avatar. Yes, the techniques might well be groundbreaking, but there are other ways of doing it and I'm not sure it really adds to the storytelling aspect.

My last big LEGO project was when I built that EPIC 1:10 scale LEGO-Ferrari F1 car. And that was 5 years ago! Sadly, there's not enough space here at home to invest in any more huge LEGOstructures.

LEGO, for me, is the most important toy a kid should ever have. Even more than Play-Doh! When I have kids in the future, I'd give them a LEGO set before I get them a computer - fact. :D It probably helps that it's cheaper too... :)

There are - but I prefer actual LEGO to develop their motor skills and dexterity.

I play LEGO games on the PSP from time to time. :)

Yes, you can. They have LEGO Creator now. Although given the complexity of it, I would think that's aimed more towards AFOLs*. But I guess parents can do it for their kids too.

AFOL = Adult Fan of LEGO

You can buy separate bricks. Unfortunately there's ONE particular piece I'm looking for to build some extra cars that they don't seem to have for sale in their online shop.

well I downloaded the video, so I have it for myself :-) one of the nice Bacardi ladies sent me email asking for some feedback and some info on how I helped to spread the don't drink and drive message. I am going to reply and ask how would they feel about me posting the video. they are proud abou their viral video hitting 250,000 views on youtube so I do not think they would mind some added free publicity with this one

    last time I got ID'ed, the guy then asked me for my birthday and star sign and decided it took me so long to answer that it was not my ID. It took me so long to answer because I was so shocked at what was happening. {Comment #128}

    That is just so weird!

I once got asked for my ID when attempting to buy a pair of rounded scissors whose packaging specifically said "Suitable for ages 3+". I was 22 at the time and let them see my university card (impossible to get one at below age 17 due to university regulations, regular scissors can be sold to anyone 16 and over and my passport was at home). It still took them 5 minutes for the cashier and her manager to decide I was old enough to purchase the scissors.

If they'd really thought I was too young for the scissors (and the fact I could see over their four-foot counter should have been a clue), then I think the next move on their part would have been to mount a search for my parents...

Hang on - has he contradicted himself on that one too? He proclaims he moved to Charlotte to use the best wind tunnel in the business, and then tells us the car will be CFD designed?

Sorry, I'm calling shenanigans on that one!

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 16:41

I agree that their press hasn't been good. Heck, it's been pretty much nonexistent.

As I said, I think it's a defensive position, possibly to reassure the potential & existing sponsors

Sorry, I'm calling shenanigans on that one!

Read peter's post, they're going to put the full size car in it in January.

I don't know enough about car design to know whether that's backwards or not, but it seems a bit backwards to me.

  • Tom G28/12/2009 at 16:44

for a man who's spent most of his working life as a journalist, the idea that journalists need to write stories, appears to have come as something of a surprise to him.

oh that sort of journalist. The sort that just tell it to a real writer and take the credit for someone else being able to get a story out of it.

Exactly. Peter is just full of (Red) Bull. They have nothing - which is surprising considering they have the YouTube guy investing in the team. Now I begin to doubt that as well...

I don't know enough about car design to know whether that's backwards or not, but it seems a bit backwards to me.

Normally they would produce wind tunnel models then the full size model but if it is CFD designed they don't need models. You can't do shaker rig tests on scale models and you can't crash test them so I don't see the point.

  • jpancoast (USF1 to rule them all!)28/12/2009 at 16:46

  • Steven Roy28/12/2009 at 16:49

So in other words Peter is either wrong or he is wasting the team's time and money?

It sounds like he doesn't understand the process which would be a bit odd for someone with his history. Looks like the basic design is CFD then as soon as they have a base design it goes into a wind tunnel for development.

    question.

what makes anyone think the youtube guy has a clue what he's doing? he likely got lucky and made a packet.

i've met a couple of internet millionaires and the one thing they all have in common is they're completely stupid. i doubt he even knows how or why youtube got successful.

  • Steven Roy28/12/2009 at 16:53

I don't know if USF1 are incompetent or just clueless. They have the big announcement on Speed talking about how open they will be then tell us that a year's worth of radio silence was planned. That seems kind of stupid. They tell us how great Windshear is then tell us that the car is CFD designed.

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 16:53

I have had the same experience with guys who made big reputations in the electronics industry in the 1980s. They are treated as geniuses but they don't seem to realise everyone in the industry made money in that decade. Regardless who was in a particulary job the result would have been more or less the same.

Well, you went from saying all they had is a nosecone to saying they have nothing, so I'm just asking where the nosecone went :)

But yes, I'm an optimist. I enjoy watching the races, and I'll watch it even if USF1 doesn't make it. I'm not really a fan of any particular driver or team, so it would be nice if I could have a "home" team that I could call my own, no matter how bad they ended up being, you know?

OK fine then. But FIF1 getting annoyed because Lotus is using a one-year old wind tunnel model that they did is just as silly considering how much development that team had, which is why I think this is just about Vijay wanting a nice fat cheque to pay his bills, much like a lot of small companies do when they see a big one might be using their IP. Think i4i vs. Microsoft of similar.

At the end of the day, we know Vijay is short on cash and I reckon if Tony Fernandes offers to settle he wouldn't say no. Lotus will be on the grid and everyone's happy!

In retrospect... making a blog somewhat dedicated to USF1 was a BADDdddddddd idea.

Well, if they don't make it, then you won't need to expend much effort on it, that's for sure!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/12/2009 at 18:19

For the record if Ralf Schumacher races for USF1, I will quit covering USF1 and rebrand the blog.

If that the case, why don't USF1 just hire Nick Heidfeld... he already has the beard. He just needs a black hat, suit, and the ability to make overpriced furniture.

    which of the new teams that have started from scratch have more to show for it? I haven't seen anything, other than Virgin, (I think it was them). {Comment #307}

Campos' car has passed a crash test.

Virgin's car has already been designed if I've understood the situation correctly (though I don't know if they've got anywhere with production yet). It's been showing a mock-up (albeit a very shadowy one).

Lotus/1Malaysia has been showing mock-ups since late November.

USF1 have something, but after today's announcement I don't know if it means anything.

  • Alianora La Canta28/12/2009 at 21:39

which they're planning on putting the full sized car in in January.

    Which seems kind of backwards to me. {Comment #323}

So USF1 have decided that they don't need all their mid-season straight-line testing (you have to sacrifice a day's straight-line testing to have 4 hours of full-sized wind tunnel testing)? Interesting...

By the way, they can't do that before January because full-scale wind tunnels in F1 are banned in the 2009 regulations.

Not sure, I was under the impression that since they're a new team their wind tunnel restrictions are different.

Besides, if there's one thing American cars can usually do fairly well it's going fast in a straight line. It's the braking and the curvy bits that stump us :D

    lotus appear farthest ahead, but if mallya decides their car looks too much like a fif1, then they're not racing either. {Comment #361}

They probably are - Mallya's options are to either go to the International Court of Arbitration (last time that was tried, the case got settled after 18 months without any sign the court was going to decide anything at all) or to go to the French civil courts, get the wrath of the FIA for not settling it through arbitration and possibly get financial recompense and/or criminal convictions against the instigators rather than a stoppage of the team as a whole.

If Lotus is savvy enough to be developing a Plan B, I reckon they're safe whatever happens in the Model Escapade...

    You have a good point on the airline rivalry - but then why hasn't Mallya kicked up a stink with Virgin? Not direct competition? {Comment #374}

Because Virgin F1 hasn't done anything to offend Vijay's sporting sensitivities... ...yet...

Vijay reminds me of what I've said about Microsoft over the years, "If they didn't have so much money... they would be out of business."

    Really, if Vijay ran his business as well as he runs his F1 team, how the heck did he make all that money? {Comment #414}

Easy. He takes the prevailing operational methodology, pushes it to the edge and finds a way of (eventually) making him money. Remember this is the team that once commented - in a 2009 podcast - that it was on a 2012 budget. It worked for him for his other businesses, he's banking on it working for him in his current sporting ventures as well (at least well enough that he's not spending oodles of money on them forever).

The trouble is that the prevailing operational methodology of this team, much as it upsets me, has been to run to the absolute edge of its resources and beyond for the last 19 years. This tends to annoy a lot of people who rightfully expect the team to leave enough resources spare to pay them in a timely manner. It's especially jarring when the current owner has a choice in the matter. Hopefully one day Vijay will sort things out once and for all and actually let the team have enough margin to do transactions like a 21st-century business is expected to do them...

  • Dan Brunell28/12/2009 at 22:21

I just sent this as a letter to the gang at Midweek Motorsports:

    Dear Midweek Motorsports Team,

First off I have to say I love the show. However, I think you guys are reading USF1 wrong. There is more to the team then appears to the untrained eye.

During the SpeedTV’s infomercial for… I mean… televised launch of USF1 in February, Peter Windsor stated that USF1 would be a “Skunk Works” type of operation. At first, I felt that this was complete and utter B.S..Surely teams like Williams would be a streamlined operations in a similar light as the Skunk Works. There is no new ground to tread there. So what could Peter Windsor have meant by a streamlined “Skunk Works” type of operation.

    I have the answer.

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to meet a current senior member of the Skunk Works at an charity fundraising event at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. After talking about the achievement in engineering that was the SR-71 Blackbird, I made the statement, “I can’t imagine you guys could make anything more stunning?” He laughed and stated, “We’ll, you should see our toasters.” I responded, “What do you mean?” He got really quiet… then he ushered me to a quiet corner of the museum. This is the basics of what he told me.

In 1954, finding that the White House cooks regularly burnt his toast and bagels, President Dwight D. Eisenhower put out a secret directive to find him a toaster that perfectly cooked his toast. Finding to no reasonable and reliable solutions in the commercial sector, Eisenhower with the help of Air Force General Curtis LeMay turned to the one man who they knew who could deliver a toaster of the quality they wanted. That man was Kelly Johnson of Lockheed-Martin. At that time, Johnson was just starting out his secret Skunk Works development group. Already busy working on the then “Top Secret” U-2 spy-plane, Kelly accepted the President’s challenge.

In two weeks, Kelly and his team had a basic four slot toaster ready for testing in the White House. It was a remarkable machine. It had a 87% “no-burnt” rate made with materials that made it the envy of toasters in Washington, D.C. area. After all, toasters of this time had about a 54% “no burn” rate. Not only this, but this new toaster automatically adjusted for the different types of bread and bagels. After seeing the remarkable achievement of his toaster, President Eisenhower started a secret “black” listed toaster project called “Operation Burnt Bagel.” To develop future toasters, The Skunk Works developed a secret division in the noted secret organization only known now as “the crumbs.” All records of who worked for the crumbs is a nationally held secret of the highest order.

The same model toaster that was developed for President Eisenhower was massed produced in 1955 and given to countries around the world as part of the Marshall plan. Citizens around the world were in rejoice with the toasting technology that the free world was able to produce. The Soviets felt they had to respond. Hence, the secret toaster war began.

Each country would try to top each other. When the Soviets developed a five slot toaster with a buttering attachment, the Americans responded several years later with a six slot toaster with an automated butter and jam spreader. Throughout the sixties, billions were spent on this black listed project. In 1968, Kelly Johnson made is masterpiece of toaster engineering. It was a 16 slice toaster with a 100% “no burn” rate. It astonished to world toaster industry.

Our advanced toaster technology is what finally crushed the Soviets economically. They couldn't find the resources to develop a 12 slice toaster, let alone a 16 slice toaster. Over the years, Johnson improved his 16 slice toasters with automatic buttering, jam spreading, crumb tray, spring silencing, and bread slicing technologies. By the time the late 1980’s came around, the Soviets had to give up. They had no money left and they couldn’t get past 12 slices. The highest “no burn” rate they could achieve was 79%.

I was taken aback by all this. I responded, “Surely you can’t mean…” He interrupted, ” Yes, our toasters won the cold war for the west.”

I think Peter Windsor knew about this secret project. He must know, as Kelly Johnson did, that toaster technology is easily applicable to other industries such as space, aerospace, and race car technology. Toaster technology is the basis of America becoming a world super power. If you can master toaster manufacturing, you can master the world.

So please don’t scoff at USF1 and their toaster making infrastructure. After all, if Brawn can go from producing ox carts to world championship cars in a year… I can’t imagine what USF1 can do with their toaster technologies as a basis for their F1 team.

agreed. but now it is, right?

    Apparently so

  • lou28/12/2009 at 23:47

he is sleeping.. i think, but i'll answer for him and say yes :P

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 23:47

Just watch the first one. /blockquote>Is the only one I've seen

Is worth it just for Depp's Keith Richards impression throughout the whole film

Apart from the fact that Lukeh's not getting credit, they aren't claiming they created it

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 23:49

    Oh dear, really?

I recognise a few - Mike Fairholme's JB helmet that he designed years ago for a McLaren test for example...

  • Tom G28/12/2009 at 23:52

Lukeh's not impressed, by the looks of Twitter.

  • Bassano28/12/2009 at 23:53

As predictable as it is, I feel I should finish watching Angels & Demons

Maybe Ewan MacGregor [and his terrible N. Irish accent] will die soon

  • startledbunny28/12/2009 at 23:53

Why I don't go on it much.

I usually only comment amongst friends (and family).

You shouldn't have bothered. It's terrible, even two Danish actors couldn't save it!

This would make a good scooby doo episode though

    Exactly!

  • Bassano29/12/2009 at 00:23

Am switching to non-exclusivity with this film

    It'll pass quicker

  • Bassano29/12/2009 at 00:24

And I would've done it too, if it wasn't for these pesky cardinals

    Helicopters & parachutes, C'MON!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/12/2009 at 00:30

    Helicopters & parachutes, C'MON!

The book is even better - he uses the helicopter door as a parachute.

The whole Antimatter bomb idea is bunk science anyway!

  • Bassano29/12/2009 at 00:32

The book is even better - he uses the helicopter door as a parachute.

I don't remember much of it, which is just as well

It would make the film even worse

Can't remember the last time I watched tripe as bad as this

  • startledbunny29/12/2009 at 00:34

Da Vinci film wasn't as bad as this

Books are fine, apart from the cryptology/arctic one. Didn't like that
