Wikipedia tells me that today is "Crate Day" - the day after Boxing Day when all the boxes were loaded into crates. I don't really understand - what boxes? what crates? But still, I do like the idea that soon every day will have an official name. Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • At last, it appears there is movement within the US F1 camp, as a website has appeared. The design leaves a lot to be desired, but there is some merit in simplicity, I suppose. The problem is, there still doesn't seem to be anything of major substance and if this is just to appease Bernie, I'm not sure it's going to work. The video is good though.
  • Joe has news about Donington, that it has been returned to its rightful owners - the Wheatcrofts. Considering what a state it is in, I don't suppose they are particularly happy about it, but if anyone can sort out the mess, I think the original owners can.
  • Following some inspiration in the comments yesterday, I'm tempted to try and make a 2009 in Audio best of show before the year is out. It is hard work, and I need your help. If you can remember any of your favourite bits from the year gone by, from all audio (except Sidepodradio which will get a best of to itself), then please leave it in the comments with a hashtag #09inaudio. We've had some great suggestions so far and any and all are appreciated as I try and wade through all the audio we've created this year.

That should do it for now. Let us know what you're up to, if you've run out of turkey yet, or if you are having to gear up to go back to work. I'll see you in the comments.

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 02:50

ew! I am blaming the lady in front of me who ignored the instruction to put her seat back upright so i could barely reach under her seat to get my belongings. My cardy was in the top of my bag and must have fallen out :( i called the lost property at the airport but had to leave a message as they werent there. Boo at me assuming it was still in my bag!

  • Steven Roy27/12/2009 at 02:53

I hate when stuff goes like that. I know a few people who have left stuff on planes and none of them ever got it back

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 02:56

it sucks because i hadnt even got through customs when i realised but everyone at the airport said they couldnt help as they were airport employees not airline employees and apparently had no way of contacting the airline people who were 20m away

That's typical. The cleaners who deal with the planes are not airline employees or airport employees just to complicate things.

I am now using my 15 minutes of free wi-fi at this airport to see if the site where I bought it still has them in stock so I can get a new one.

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 03:20

hmm I had it in black and they still have it in a sort of creamy-sandy colour. I think I'll buy it even though its a different colour because it was just so comfortable. And it's on sale!

If you buy a new one it increases the chances of getting your old one back

    Stay safe Amy!

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 11:41

heh trams are silly, they have to stop for traffic lights. New plan is to get the one in 5 minutes that goes 5 away from my house then walk. Rather that than sit here any longer, town is full of scary people at night.

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 11:42

i dont do taxis. Even if i wanted to they refuse to go to my house because the fare is too small. They dont seem to care that its illegal to reject jobs

Hi Lukeh - any more Christmas dinners today?

    ...well.... yes...!!!

  • Lukeh27/12/2009 at 12:21

Although we're having pork today rather than turkey.

  • Tom G27/12/2009 at 12:21

I only woke up an hour and a quarter ago due to recovering from the party at my aunt's house last night. It was a lot of fun, but I was ready to fall asleep about an hour before Mum decided to leave. Oh well, all part of the once-a-year stuff that comes with Christmas...

Sort of. I'm having savoury Christmas leftovers, with extra seasonal vegetables, as a thick soup.

Yeah, I hate them! I swear I'd have dived off the end if the man hadn't got it back in the basket in time!!

  • Tom G27/12/2009 at 12:26

I think the fact that I've had to wait since September to get it has just made it more exciting!

  • Journeyer27/12/2009 at 12:40

OUCH. Makes ours seem positively tame by comparison. Our minimum fare is at 0.30 GBP.

OUCH. Makes ours seem positively tame by comparison. Our minimum fare is at 0.30 GBP.

All the taxis here start at £2.50 anyway but don't have a minimum fare I think.

  • Nick in Dubai27/12/2009 at 12:47

OUCH. Makes ours seem positively tame by comparison. Our minimum fare is at 0.30 GBP.

Its new, it was about 50p befroe, but since they introduced it they dont seem to reject fares.

If they do they run the risk of loosing their job abd being deported so...

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 12:49

Its new, it was about 50p befroe, but since they introduced it they dont seem to reject fares.

in my logic it would make sense for a taxi driver to do a quick 5 minute trip to my place because there is always lots of people in my area trying to take a quick 5 minute trip back the other way. Otherwise they could do their 20 minute journey and then have to drive all the way back into the city with no one in the car.

    and here is the result.

    zoomed out

    zoomed in

it's not the best quality shot, but for a subject that's moving and far away it's more than what i could ask for.

Have i mentioned how much i like my new digi camera :)

All I really should do now is get the golf stuff from the car so I can throw them in the washing machine. We've not played in 2 months and things are starting to whiff a bit... just the club covers, the anorak and my gloves, really.

quick show of hands, we're thinking of maybe not doing fantasyracers this year. the 2010 championship is open, but there appears to be a needlessly complicated two-tier entry system, and now leagues with over 100 people are excluded from the competition.

Is this an initiative of the FIA, this fantasyracers thing? :P

quick show of hands, we're thinking of maybe not doing fantasyracers this year.

quick show of hands, we're thinking of maybe not doing fantasyracers this year. the 2010 championship is open, but there appears to be a needlessly complicated two-tier entry system, and now leagues with over 100 people are excluded from the competition.

    Evening.

Well I won't have much to blog about at F1 races next year what with no fuel corrected qualifying analysis and no Fantasy Racers, will I? :D

I don't like that. I like one set of rules. This sounds like the engine freeze. Imagine if those rules applied in 2009. How many people woud have had the Brawn drivers? Yet they were winning every race at the start of the season and unless you chose the right oprion at the start there would be no way to get them.

  • me27/12/2009 at 16:49

it's kinda the same as the beta trial, the 100 team limit was in place there too.

There was another game we had a league with, some time ago. Grand Prix..something. Can you remember what that was called? It had a blue layout and involved budgets. I'm not sure if that would also be a bit complicated

If you look at the SPC league, the top 100 excludes a lot of us here too.

I'm not sure what to think. Strategy 1 would have been fine but it's wrong to exclude people on the basis that SPC and AUTOSPORT promoted the game better and therefore cannot be rewarded with extra players!

  • Pat W27/12/2009 at 16:51

if anyone has 5mins, we're just testing something new here:

    http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/20/live-after-eight/

instead of having to download the replay (which can take ages), you can now seek to any point in the video almost instantly. this works a bit like youtube does.

let us know if it works for you, or if anyone experiences issues. currently the party video is the only show that is "seek enabled". you can still download it like normal by clicking the "arrow out of the box" icon.

  • Danny27/12/2009 at 17:33

    #oopsy.

I do have good reasons for making the changes I did at Fantasy Racers, and not only to stop Kathi from winning. I'd like to explain the decision for the 2 biggest changes.

Firstly, the 100 team limit - this isn't to stop leagues of more than 100 teams from entering. Leagues can continue as they did this year, but only the first 100 will contribute to the average score. The SPC league was never headed in 2009, and never looked like it would be. It's a pretty unique position to have 500+ entries in a single league, and I doubt any other league would ever get close to that. Therefore the trophy is pretty much assured to go to SPC each year, which isn't really in the spirit of the competition. There's nothing to stop a large sidepodcast league, or even form multiple leagues of 100, but the important thing is that it's a competition and not a foregone conlusion right from the start because of the number of entries in that league.

The explanation for the two tier system is largely to please the casual player. Many people felt that they simply wanted to enter a team and to stick with it as the season unfolded. They didn't want to come back race after race to make the changes, but felt they were disadvantaged by those that did. The extra 5.0m budget was to redress that balance a little.

That said, I do understand the reluctance to play if it's not to the taste of sidepodcast masses. I did receive feedback from a large number of players, as well as that at SPC. Obviously I can't please everybody.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/12/2009 at 17:37

    Hi Danny,

Thanks for the clarification. I think the main complaint with FR last year was that it was too complicated for the casual player. I think with a two-tier system it becomes more complicated than it was before, which is totally against your aim I suppose.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/12/2009 at 17:38

But there are other large leagues as well - and it seems a little odd to be penalising those with the largest members who actively promote and donate to the game itself?

  • Chris27/12/2009 at 17:43

Afternoon all. How are we? What have I missed in the past few days?

    Hey Danny.

Say if you chose the no-change option, what if a driver was sacked or injured. Could you replace them?

  • me27/12/2009 at 17:46

Leagues can continue as they did this year, but only the first 100 will contribute to the average score. The SPC league was never headed in 2009, and never looked like it would be

hey danny. we were always under the impression only the top 5 contributed to league position? probably a misunderstanding on our part.

The explanation for the two tier system is largely to please the casual player. Many people felt that they simply wanted to enter a team and to stick with it as the season unfolded

that makes sense, but i can't see how we can tell the difference between each type of player? if person 'a' takes option one while person 'b' takes option two, how do we know if that's a person putting loads of effort in or not?

That said, I do understand the reluctance to play if it's not to the taste of sidepodcast masses. I did receive feedback from a large number of players, as well as that at SPC. Obviously I can't please everybody.

that's good news. i think that the easiest way to solve the 500+ teams problem is simply not to have a league. people can still compete individually, and we probably still will.

explaining all of this in less than 30 seconds on an audio show, is probably beyond us.

  • Danny27/12/2009 at 17:46

It's not really penalising, just trying to level the playing field I guess. Sidepodcast had over 500 teams this year. only 1 other league came close which was still under 200. No other league was bigger than 100 entries.

  • Danny27/12/2009 at 17:46

    Yes you could.

  • Pat W27/12/2009 at 17:47

Thanks for clarifying - this actually seems like a reasonable idea. It depends what you mean by 'first 100', I assume it would be the '100 best' in any given week.

I don't think they've quite got the whole F1 concept and being far too American with the production process, so, yes, as opposed to the race car.

I guess if SPC still had a single league the later entries may feel a little aggrieved at not contributing to the 'league average' - perhaps I've underestimated the importance?

There's nothing to stop multiple SPC leagues from being created, and competing against one another. I'd be willing to put a page together combining all SPC leagues if there was an appetite for it.

Exactly, they might be trying the good old way of designing, with a cup of tea and some toast.

I was about to say they could hire me, but i'm not a fan of tea, so they'd have to get something else in.

that's more work than we could ask you to do.

not sure about anyone else, but i'm quite liking the idea of just competing in the main league and seeing where we end up.

Multiple SPC leagues would not make sense in the live show. Part of the fun of the competition is that we can all track positions relative to each other and then people can set up or change rivalries during the season. I would be in favour of one sidepodcast league and if only the first 100 entries count for the overall competition then so be it.

  • Pat W27/12/2009 at 18:04

They made a nosecone. That doesn't seem like a big effort for 6 month's work!

Hopefully there is a bit of lag between what is in the video, and what is going on in reality - they should be crash-testing a basic chassis now shouldn't they?

I guess if SPC still had a single league the later entries may feel a little aggrieved at not contributing to the 'league average' - perhaps I've underestimated the importance?

Why join a league if your points don't contribute? What you'll end up with is SPC-A, SPC-B, etc..

Ah, true. I suppose if there were 400 people in the SPC league, the 100 counting for the main game could have an icon by their name...

What if I dumped all the SPC league data into a giant spreadsheet between the end of the race and the debrief, and then posted the spreadsheet here? Then we could still see where we were with regard to each other. And I promise to make it less complicated than the comparitor...

Midland did something similar when they started out. The tactic might have worked in the long term if Alex Schnaider hadn't sold out before the end of the first season.

As I mentioned to 'me' earlier, I'd be happy to put together a page or download including all details of all SPC members, if the decision was made to split across multiple leagues.

All of the data is in the database, I simply need to write a quick query to extract it.

Fair enough I suppose - you must have lots of things each time that you want to put into the show and can't for whatever reason. I think you guys are going to struggle a little with next year's FR rules, IMO...

  • Lukeh27/12/2009 at 18:55

No. Usually we don't open bank Holidays but new area manager thinks it's a good idea. Despite, again, the fact noone will be coming to us as we're in a city centre.

It might have to be if you need a spreadsheet to explain it. I can't see people flocking to join the league when you guys try and explain the two tier system on a podcast - I think most people will turn off to that!

You either sign up for a locked team and get $5 million more, or you have an unlocked team and carry on like normal?

Ah i see. Perhaps tell people to put a number or a symbol at the end of any team they enter the SPC leauge with to say which option they have taken?

Either that or have 2 SPC leauges one for each category.

In the end i guess the $5m will even it up anyway?

  • me27/12/2009 at 19:01

It doesnt seem that complex :P

it really does, if you have a 5 minute slot ever 14 days in which to convey a lot of information. in that instance simplicity rules. this year was very hard and in fact only the manager reports saved it from being dropped altogether.

  • jpancoast27/12/2009 at 19:02

I would hope so too. With all the stories going around about them, you would think that they would put out a bit more, no?

I think there is a bit of a lag. Windsor mentioned at least once during the (I think it was in one of the last 3 or 4 races) season on Speed TV that they were laying out parts that day.

  • Nick in Dubai27/12/2009 at 19:02

Yeah, i guess it is a little tricky, you dont want it to take over the shows...

  • me27/12/2009 at 19:04

Either that or have 2 SPC leauges one for each category.

the rules for signing up used to be simple. go here, type in "franck", pick a team. and still people got confused.

you're vastly overestimating people's ability to read instructions if you think selecting the correct league based on the type of team you have will not end in disaster.

need i mention the "active thread drop down"? :)

  • Nick in Dubai27/12/2009 at 19:07

    :D

I guess it could be easier as a blog only thing. It might be worth leaving the leauge there like normal, and seeing what happens? it could all even out in the end?

Would it not be easier if everyone in the sidepodcast league played to the one set of rules rather than having some paying by each set?

Don't think so, as some people would want to do option 1, and others want to do option 2. As they would feel it suits them better.

Yeah, and I also bagged Tues and Weds off. A lot of people have the week off, I work for a farm/food company so they expect us to work the days that aren't public holidays but since it is quiet and the office is covered, I don't need to be in, other than Thurs 31st for stocktake.

  • Jeremy27/12/2009 at 21:24

bank holidays are only for banks over here. We call the days that everyone is supposed to have off 'public' holidays. All the retail shops are open though.

The poor people working in the Caltex petrol station were only getting time and a half for Xmas day. I'm outraged by this. It should be triple time!

There's no stopping the consumerism down here

We were closed Christmas Day only.

  • Littlepurplegoth27/12/2009 at 22:09

random question... are most shops closed on new years day?

most seem to be here. Not going to be going anywhere near them though as will be hellish (was bad enough today!) although IKEA will probably be ok.

LPG is talking about what happens when you try to pull down the page past the top on an iPod Touch/iPhone. What happens is you see a grey background and then the page springs back up again.

Tweetie 2 uses this gesture to load new tweets, LPG was wondering if this was happening to the comments too, but it isn't.

  • me27/12/2009 at 23:10

pull down as in touch the top of the open window, scroll down, and release.

  • me27/12/2009 at 23:13

Tweetie 2 uses this gesture to load new tweets, LPG was wondering if this was happening to the comments too, but it isn't.

ahhhh. no, comments load automatically, tweetie has to do that because twitter rate limits you to 300 "pulls" per hour. we have no limits or restrictions so it wouldn't be of use.

iphone development is go though, although the first plan is to incorporate the audio/video podcasts and then add commenting after that.

  • Bassano27/12/2009 at 23:14

    that refreshes the page?

No, LPG was asking if it loads new comment shere but was just a coincidence

Mr Bassano Plane Expert man I have a plane related question. Why do I have to have my window shades up for landing? :D

That's a good question because if they were down you could keep the cabin lights on during landing.

I'm guessing that it's so the crew can see out and I don't mean the pilot. Mind you on the Concorde, with the nose up you couldn't see out the front only sideways.

  • Bassano27/12/2009 at 23:30

  • Amy27/12/2009 at 23:31

Nah, it wasn't my idea ;)

I had worked out that the seat upright and the tray table stowed was probably in case you needed to get out in a hurry but I couldn't work out how window shades relate. It all makes sense now :D

  • Tom G27/12/2009 at 23:31

Wow, that's more than I've done in Concorde, absolutely no flights at all! Closest I've got is going in 002 (British Prototype) and 101 (British Pre-Production). I was promised a flight one day by my grandfather, but then it was retired. It really was the saddest moment of this decade.

It is better to do it that way. I am amazed that even Schumacher fans could take offence to that video but that is what blind faith foes to people I suppose.

The alternative is not to tackle them and let them takeover or constantly moderate them which just leads to more and more obscene posts.

My experience is that the most hardcore won't back down. This is somewhat true for both camps. It makes for an unpleasant atmosphere.

I'll second that one. Been burned badly too many times to bother again!

true, but then i wouldn't bother with the lunatics on the autosport forums even before the man returned, yet i do bother to comment on plenty of blogs.

Blogs and forums maybe. But the sites where I have a known regular profile I would not.

I believe arguing against some of them only antagonises pros into posting more comments in response, antis into replying to those to try and convince them, each intentionally baiting the other until it becomes a battleground driving away everyone else.
