Today is Olivier Panis' birthday, and that is a name I vaguely recognise from my early days of watching Formula 1. If I recall correctly, Panis left Toyota as test driver making way for Franck to test there, and I can't decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Instead, let's move on to what we're talking about instead:
- There is FOTA news, of a sort, in that US F1 have applied to join. However, with this news is the more interesting snippet that Force India think they have been invited back in. No word on whether Williams have received the hand of friendship or whether or not they would touch it.
- F1 new boy Jaime Alguersuari has been put under his biggest test to date by taking the F1.com Ask the Expert quiz. He does relatively well, is towards the top of the leaderboard and joint with Kazuki Nakajima. I particularly like the bit where he says: "Shame on me."
- Barrichello has likened the championship battle to golf - saying that when you play golf, you have to play against the course and not against your opponent, otherwise it gets into your head. I would have thought playing against your opponent would help too though, wouldn't it?

I mean what is the point of playing against your teammate when you can dominate a race by have a lap over your teammate to hear Brawn call over the radio. it is, is one of the good things of studying physics. sometimes you travel to nice places (and sometimes you compensate it by not having a life for a week...) :-)
BTW, I've booked train tickets to London for the 10-11th of October. If anyone is around those days there could be an intercontinental meet-up (I'll be in tourist mode, though)

Female astronauts are more trouble than they are worth. First one lobs her toolkit now one just smashed here helmet off a space station. You would think she would notice that there was a space station in the vicinity. Now here carbon dioxide levels have shot up. They are suggesting it may be a helmet sensor problem. Maybe if she hadn't smashed it off a space station the sensor would be fine.

alot of the modern stuff is part of the city of art and science which we went to which was amazing! but like all cities Valencia has some run down areas. it's sad because for the sections of the track we saw the architecture looks amazing, if only the architecture was the same for the rest of the track..

Montreal might actually be closer to Australia than London. The difference might be where in Austrailia you are heading from. Toronto to Auckland, NZ was a 22 hour flight but that included some massive stopovers in Whereever George Bush Airport is in Texas, and LAX. AX to Auckland was direct. POint is, that is not actual air time.

I just thought of something. You do know that one way to get cheap flights is to act as a courier. I hav a friend who got a ridiculously cheap flight home from Australia and all she had to carry was a large letter. She was shown the contents before it was sealed etc so it is all above board. The only problem is you can't book those months ahead and I have no idea how you organise them in the first place but they do happen all the time.

It is legitinate businesses that need documents or small packages to be somewhere else faster than Fedex can manage or they don't want their package to be just thrown in with a pile of others. These kind of things happen more than you may think. My mate used to run a sales office and quite a few times he phned me asking if I was busy as he needed somebody to take a package to America. I never went but he used to ask his receptionist etc if they had a passport and could go.
In those cases they flew there an were met at the other end, taken out to dinner and got on a flight to come back. He was sending sales data and presentations that had to be in the USA that day and there is no other way to do that.
She works for a cable TV company and watches TV all day.

The energy just doesnt last...
I watched the start of the race again earlier and noticed that Raikkonen went off the track near the start (not AT the start when he jumped all those positions :P) and rejoined basically into Kubica's car and they clashed! I'm pretty sure it's what sparked off the chain-reaction that made everyone else crash. Because there was then this big incident, it didn't get mentioned again as FOM didn't show the replays from before the incident.
my commentators just said that andy roddick won in straight sets. Just in time for my lunch break to end. I shall investigate sta travel when i get home :D

Kimi went off at the top of the hill and came back on and Kubica's front wing got damaged in the clash. I remember thinking at the time that he triggered everything that followed.

Then I was late for work because a farmer insisted on walking his sheep down the road for 2 miles before moving them out the way.
It's still the morning. I fear for my life this afternoon!

Friday - Well Friday is still Friday it's the end of the week.

It usually depends on what sites you access and what links you click. Some may have them hidden deep within their pages. Some aren't as obviously dangerous as others, so it's hard to spot at times.

I love it. I had Vista before so I notice the improvements. It has rss wallpaper feed things (I haven't set one up yet) and the new task bar make things much better. It isn't working my CPU or HDD as much so I'm keeping it. Plus it came free because I got it from Uni so I'm not going to change. There are a lot of changes too many to go into in one post :D

If the university have an msdn subscription (I think its actually called msdnaa, but the one normal people/businesses can buy is called MSDN) you get most of microsoft's software for free for you to make programs with/for.... I think there's a no-commercial clause in the license though

Thats our school for you, though they did get shiny(ish) new compaq's by the time I left. Those kids have never had it so good, probably never have to face running out of virtual memory, or having to use the archaeic pentium 90 Mitsubishi computer in the Design and Technology room!
What threw me was that I was struggling to keep up with two a three comments a minute and then all of a sudden 10-15mins passed without one. I even rebooted the browser to check.

On the iTunes commets from earlier I use iTunes on my PC and it works great. It does everything I need. There are some areas that need improvement but for example I use my PC for syncing my iPhone to iTunes rather than my mac.
and they can add to it, with worrying if something has already been said. no need to scan 1,500 comments, just read the 40 relevant ones.

Just a thought could we have a switch icon next to the link to the post on the right of each comment? So pressing reply is disabled but pressing switch on the right and then reply could be enough of a deterant to make it a conscious decision?

What I do is
1) open the doohicky.
2) turn off follow comments
3) find read more and press it
4) keep pressing it until my name appears in the commenter box
5) hit the pending button
6) read the comments
7) hit the pending button again
8) turn back on follow comments

It's a real pain to press read more loads when it's moving, but with follow comments turned off you're golden.

I do much the same as Alex. Them ost I have ever loaded is 760 comments
we used to have two. one feed was an enhanced AAC file for use in ipods / itunes. AAC files contained chapters, links and photographs along with audio.
the other was a plain vanilla MP3 file for anyone not signed up to the apple eco-system.
we've stopped doing AAC files because we can't afford the disk space to keep duplicate content in that quantity at the moment. so for the time being, the feeds are the same (MP3 only).

i like the idea of someone doing it before me.
Mine is:
1) Open Doohickey and turn off audio alert.
2) Say hi on Doohickey in the Daily.
3) Open LCLT and turn off audio alert and follow comments.
4) Read a string of comments in the LCLT, reply sometimes.
5) Take an occasional break to read anything new in Doohickey, in case people are replying or something more interesting is happening.
6) When caught up, close LCLT and sit in Doohickey until I remember to go to bed.

I listened to three Leo shows yesterday and everyone of them panned it. The complaints ranged from you just can't tell if from Leopard to there are all sorts of compatability problems. THe advice seemed to be don't bother with it.
Yeah I'm sure it is but I am a big cheater because of three reasons:
1) I don't have any thing like production stuff on my mac
2) All of my data is stored in the cloud - or backed up there
3) The only bit of non-apple software installed on this mac is (I think) Firefox

I haven't heard that yet but TWiT and TWiG had a go at it and even TWiF slaughtered it.
i'd say go for it. the improvements will take months to come down the line, because all the developers need to take advantages of the improvements. also, memory is still too pricey to drop 32GB of ram into a laptop. but when it comes down, mac's will be beyond awesome.

One from the you couldn't make it up department. A couple of days ago when the shuttle docked with the ISS some manouvring thrusters on the ISS failed. At the press conference NASA said it was not a real problem there are other thrusters that can be used. The main use of the failed thrusters is in moving the ISS out of the way of debris and none was in the vicinity.
Today a lump of space junk just turned up.
They are planning to go ahead with the preparations for tomorrow's spacewalk although the spacewalk may be postponed if the station has to be moved out of the way of the debris.

Quick question. I usually comment in LCLT & I know how to quote there but when I try in Doohickey it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?
In the Doohickey you only need to click on the bit you want to quote or click on the person's name to quote the whole comment
You need to "reply" under the comment you want to quote and click on the quotable text when the window opens.
We need giggles to do a qik stream of this - he did so well with Apple TV!
You need to use the reply button then click the section in the post you're replying to to quote that bit. You can't click to quote using the quick comment button.

I tried on a test blog, you can easily change the width, but the border images are a completely different matter :-(
its the bit marked #main in the content section that widens the posts, but make sure you adjust the #content width as well. just tried it on one of mine.

The scary thing is how awesome the interface works with the iPhone. I have my tv connected to my stereo which is great obviously.
And because my iPhone connects to my apple tv without turning the tv on I can make my stereo play music by choosing a song on the iPhone.

It is the most awesome thing ever - and why I bought an Apple TV before the movies came out in the UK

Sony are brining out an android phone later this year so i am hoping for some ps3 conectivity before then.
BTW PS3 3.0 was released (today?) and i have downloaded it. The iplayer launches directly from the XMB but it runs in the browser which is still awesome as it has the soecial interface which came out earlier this summer, but it isnt anything new really other than direct acess.

I seem to have (almost) successfully widened the body from 485px to 550px, which should make things a lot easier to read. I say almost.. The header/footer corners didn't work properly, I saved them, extended them and uploaded and they came out red.

Exactly. Most people once they actually use the product find they live it because it does what they need without getting in the way. It gives people the sense of control that makes them feel in charge of the product (rather than say the way Windows reboots forcing an update without your permission).
But some people find, quite understandbly, that they don't feel in control because they feel that somebody else is telling them what they should think. Apple people are drinking the coolade etc. And of course it will never work for them. People want to be in control so if they think this they can't buy apple. Ironically they are in some ways more dillusional than the Apple fanboys. They swear against something.
Personally I use an Apple iPhone, 3 PCs running Windows and 1 Macintosh Laptop. I spend most of my time using Microsoft software.

When people ask me what they should do I always say travel. I have only been out of Europe 3 times and there is so much of the world I want to see. Take every chance you get to see another part of the world.
Thing is, if you look at the originals via Firefox they look white/clear between the corners. Save it and open in MS Paint (yeh I know) and they show up red. Fine I thought... just adjust and it'll be fine... so now I have red lines there :-)

Rubbish. If any group of people knows what it is like to be told what to think, it is people using MS products. That isn't why some swear away from Apple (not me btw, that's not my argument though it may seem like it often).
I would be one of them... I think I could not be really comfortable using a Mac, I have a physiological need to mess up with the computer configuration :-)

Yeah, things have been really tough for me, particularly over the past year and I really just want to go do something I've never been able to do before. I've never been out the country by myself, I've never seen anywhere outside Europe. I know I'm going to have to get my finances together and go back to uni at some point so I'd really like to go broaden my horizons first!!

MS SQL is a large part of my life. Sadly.
I wouldn't have a problem with using a Mac.. but I would get the urge after 12-18 months to want to upgrade a component or two. Last time I used Macs you couldn't do that, I don't know if you can now. I like the moddable nature of PCs. Windows is what lets it down.

I suggested you might want to look at Acast, and I've since come across Mediafly which has just been released for Android, and looks like an even better free option, in what I've seen of it so far.
trust me, as someone who's just done it, it's totally worth it.
Y'know what, I've been trying to pin that down for a few weeks now, and its hard because Macs have come a hell of a long way since I last used them, some 14-15 years ago when Mum had one. I'm closer to considering them now than I ever was.
I've always liked the upgradeable nature of PCs. Get it how you want it, then 18 months later you just need to change a component here or there rather than the whole machine.
I am sure you will enjoy yourself and no doubt will really get the travel bug.

Macs can run any software now that they are Intel based so you can fiddle to your hearts content. The Mac OS has a terminal program built in, so if you want to do command line stuff, knock yourself out.
I prefer a mouse, but I can use anything, and I choose Mac OS X!

In Australia, you could buy it from three different carriers, and if you were on a plan, they would happily unlock it for you, since they had you locked into 12 or 24 months of payments anyway. If you went prepaid, you could unlock for a fee.
You can now get it from 2 extra carriers or buy it outright unlocked. We win for once!

Also, look at Snow Leopard. While Microsoft hurriedly release a version of Windows to replace Vista, Apple release a new OS with almost no new features, just improvements on existing ones. A good example of this is Exposé, the program that allows you to see all the open windows on screen at once. It was good before, but now it is a joy to use.
Some people get the bug and some don't.
I would never spend that kind of money on a computer any more. The iMac is much more likely, I just need to set the PC up as a server in the background and start saving my pennies.

I agree. It's just that the difference in price doesn't justify it right now for me. I've just bought a few months ago a PC (built at a local store) which was almost the fastest machine you could get here, for 1000 USD. An equivalent Mac would have costed me... wait, there is not mac with that config here. Either I should have settled for a less powerful 2000USD iMac, or lose my mind and go for a 4000USD MacPro

$649 in Aussie dollars. But the built in Calendar etc support Exchange natively now. Entourage is being replaced in 2010 with proper Outlook for Mac. Silly MS taking so long. Apparently. they are bringing Macros back to Excel as well.

I agree Vista i rubbish. Windows 7 was hardly a rushed upgrade. It's a significant one, but and upgrade, not a new OS in any way. Also, Snow Leopard is arguably just a service pack. Apple could have been trickling out the changes over time, but they choose to pack them up, call it an OS upgrade and change for it. Looks more like a marketing exercise to me

For Windows, perhaps (dump the Vista name - Microsoft's Edsel), but Snow Leopard is a lot more than a service pack. Some of the changes deep in the system that most users will never even notice will become very significant as more software adds support for them. Grand Central Dispatch is one of the most elegant ways of dealing with the multi-thread programming conundrum I have seen.

Where to start? Ok here's one thing that infuriates me - the "secure" mode that darkens the screen and places a message in the middle to tell you that you are about to do something that might damage the machine and is it OK to continue when creating a folder I know you can disable it, but it drives me mad.

I can't argue that. Honestly, you can't really compare across operating systems, it's a no-win argument. The rest comes down to company marketing. Microsoft didn't charge for WinXP SP3, a very big upgrade, Apple did for OSX.6. But, whatever.
:D I forgot to mention DRM, licencing, the different "versions" - Home, Professional, Ultimate etc.
OS X comes with simple licencing, no serial numbers and just one version.
I mentioned to Alex earlier that I listened to three of Leo's shows yesterday which are full of Mac fanboy's and every single person had a go at Snow Leopard. They either said they could see no differnce or they had compatibiliy issues. They also made the comment that it was a service pack and was simply a marketing exrcise to put something up against Windows 7.

I've specifically avoided using it (and I like Windows generally) because it has such a poor reputation. Some basic functions are just terrible. Like copying multiple large files, which takes longer than it does in XP for no apparent reason.

I hate Vista. I never have problems with computers. The one I am using now is years old and runs XP and has never needed any kind of repair. My Vista laptop lasted a year before I had to re-istall the Vista. Then it lasted 4 months before it needed it again. From the first day I used Vista I hated it.
It's been about 8 years since Mac OS X was released. We ran ads on TV saying we had no viruses. Boy did that stir up the hornets nest. Keeps trying code kiddies!

There's a better one than that. the Vista developers decided that to make sure that media content played back without stuttering, they would make media events such as playing a sound or video high priority. The result of this was that when your computer played a system sound, the network throughput would drop to a crawl. (It's fixed now).

My favourite bug bear with Vista is the five minute shut down warning. What genius ever thought that was a good idea? You go to get a cup of tea and come back to find the computer has shut down and you have lost everything you had open.

Earlier I mentioned that I had installed Windows 2000 to use as a platform for SQL server Enterprise Manager. Bearing in mind that it is running as a virtual machine on my Mac, which is slower than running directly on the hardware, Win2K runs very nicely indeed.
Bring it on! We are not perfect, but we don't make it easy for the bad guys like some companies.

They just don't understand that if they used something other than WIndows, they wouldn't need all the security software designed to protect Windows from its shortcomings.
You haven't had that. Every few days I get a pop up box saying that something has been downloaded and needs to re-boot to install. It gives you a few options but the default is 5 minutes. So it pops up and starts counting down like a bomb on a James Bond film.

If you install updates that need a restart, it warns you it's going to do it in 5 minutes (which obviously you can cancel!) but if you're not watching when it warns you, you come back to find the stupid machine restarted and all your work gone....

You should see the vulnerabilities that come through for just about everything. Some would really scare you.
That's Auto Update at work. OS X just pops up and asks you if you want to update stuff. You then have to type your password in befre it will install anything and it helpfully shows you which updates require a reboot.

I think it's a cultural thing. Some companies feel the need to do whatever it takes to get a monopoly, which is where MS got sloppy.

All these things are easy to solve, it's not like you can't change the options. So just check the box and deal with it
and you can pretty much do that with Vista as well. The problem is the defaults - which is what Steven is seeing. After the WinXP days, MSFT went overboard to try to enforce patching of vulnerabilities.
These kids (regardless of age) that have time to write code (or hash together bits of code) that can take control of your routers etc really drive me nuts.
I guess it is good that they constantly push the manufacturers to produce better products, but gee it gets old realllllly fast when you do it for a living.
