It's Free Practice Friday, and we'll be up in just a couple of hours to watch the first action in Japan. The drivers are all bigging up the weekend, so let's hope it lives up to expectations. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:
- F1 Punter has taken a look at the possibility of a safety car at Suzuka. It looks like the chances are not exactly high, but a lot of the current crop of drivers haven't been on this track before, so anything could happen!
- James has written a post with his ideal F1 calendar on there, and is curious what you would put on your own calendar, if you could make the decisions. I'm more than happy to go with James' as he's only got 15 races on there.
- Pitlane Fanatic have their Japanese GP preview up, and take a look at the main challengers for the weekend, plus what to look out for on the circuit itself. The weather forecasts are still suggesting rain, which sounds suspiciously like Fuji!
That'll do it for now. We'll be back with live threads throughout the day, and the usual F1 Minute and Digest roundup later. Yay for Fridays! I'll see you in the comments.
Wahey for Friday!
FP1 is in 3hrs?
Ah, 2 apparently
2am, isn't it?
wow change of thread, is it that time already?
Yup, I consulted iCal and it set me right
Fog and rain in Suzuka this morning., and practice is under two hours away. Will be a very quiet morning. via @realbrawngp
Ooh interesting :P
Fuji giving Suzuka a little "welcome back" present?
:)
Sounds like it eh?
Ah, I see the other half of SPC has changed his display name! Is this for real or are all those double Smirnoff and Monsters playing tricks on me? :D
i'm testing it out...
I like it! Makes much more sense... maybe without the full stop though...
i took it away? or you mean after mr?
It just looks a bit odd with the colon....
Yes mr c might be better...
Or if you can find somone to type capitals... MrC
Everyone gets one of those
at some point, that will change to:

mr. c. said:
might be okay?
:P
The talk was awesome... i kinda want to become a management consulktant and make everyone run their firms like F1 teams... some really good idea's!
Also learned there are raely instinct calls... they make hundreds of strategy simulations so they know weather they should pit or not if a safety car comes out ;) #supersecretfacts
I resististed :P
It was good, you shoulda come!
Work thought otherwise :(
Silly work!
where was it?
Management consultants are the lowest form of life on the planet
Oh Steven....
Geoff Willis to be Technical Director at Qadbak/Sauber http://bit.ly/3l5fi #F1 Via @f1nonstop
Below salesmen?
I thought that was Lindsay Lohan
London, next door to the treasury..
You obviously havent seen how some people think you should run a business!
ooh. wondered where he'd got too.
He's right. We used to call management consultants "rhinos"
They're short-sighted, thick skinned and charge a lot.
Mr C, you've not been reading your F1 Insider app ;)
i have too much information at my fingertips!
That's how you like it though
Way, way, way below. Below Bernie and Max and Flav
true. doesn't mean i can take it all in.
just makes me feel all-knowing,
Below whoever hired them?
Need to add "Mwah haa haaa" on that one
I have seen good businesses trashed by so called experts who have been given the evangelical treatment and I have seen badly run businesses. One is far worse than the other. Anyone who walks into a business they know nothing about and says they know how to fix it is an idiot, a liar and a management consultant
Mr Allen is saying on twitter that its chucking it down in Suzuka!
I guess this means Quadbike have been pkanning this for a while then
Sounds like it, I love how Mario isn't saying N E Fing about the Speculation!
Should make Friday's running vey interesting indeed!
record number of shoutouts on 5live? they're gonna be bored.
Can't work out if I'm happy about this or not. I really fancy a wet weekend! Similarly, I'll be annoyed if I stay up and get nil sleep and there's no running....
Yes because generally they are either so desperate they will try anything or their banks force them into having them to get the credit they need. Management consultants like the banks get paid regardless whether they do a good job or not.
I'm hearing that its going to be a soggy day tomorrow too
Are you texting? :)
They need Jon to play Bob the Builder
Boo. Wasn't there a team recently which made a big gain on a Safety Car period through old fashioned seat of the pants decisions? Spyker or Super Aguri..?
I'll leave that to you guys. I'll be asleep during FP1 and moste probably getting ready for work during FP2.
Yeah i guess i was at the same time opps! Srry!
Suzuka's pretty much the only rce I don't want to see wet, I love that place
Well, Spa 2010 as well, I s'pose :D
I was supposed to be going to bed early. FAIL. I am going now to get an hour's sleep and then another two between sessions should be enough. Night all even if it is only temporary.
Thanks, but Christine I did mention there was room in my calendar for a couple more races :)
Night fella
The real problem is that whatever the consulant suggests is usually implemented because not to do so would be a waste of their enormous fee.
Don't forget teachers and real estate agents.
I will say that in my job, I can spend a week in a new location and tell you whats wrong with it/them. But that's the same types of business.
Night... surely staying up is logical now?
See ya Steven
Just catching up on Giggles mutimedia frenzy, I feel i let the side down a little... I will try to make up for it next time ;)
Most people get paid no matter how well they do for a certain amount of time. I teacher has to go through OFSTED roughly every 3 years though.
Greetings Everyone!
The Renault approach of
a safety car period is far superior than purchasing a supercomputer or gambling on a safety car. All you need is a driver that is more useless than PK jr ......
Oh, wait PK was so useless he even botched crashing into the wall. NO one was supposed to figure out it was on purpose...
Yeah, we were somewhat remiss with our meeting.
Hey Jordan
hehe no worries, was good to meet you!
Greetings Sled-God
Morning!
Evening! (actually night)
Morning for me, this weekend im on Japan time so its nearly 8:45am to me
How did you get yourself onto Japanese time....?
Doohickey went to sleep and i didnt notice.
How are we all this fine...morning?
away ;)
i meant "awake".
Hey B. C. !
Nick? Sled-God ??? I have not used a tundra joke in a long time!
obviously......
It was a cool running's reference ;)
from last night and into tonight i put myself on japanese time, forcing it upon myself, its a bit weird but hey, im about to settle down to a fryed breakfast at 1am?
and your neighbours think you are mad?
Don't think they realize, im more concerned bout not making to much noise for MrsSLV
I don't see how you benefit particularly though. Might as well go through the pain now as yesterday.
Oh my gosh. You have a wife? There's no way I'd be having nonsense like that....
Means i get to see all sessions live and not tired and falling asleep.
If somone bought you flowers before they told you they were doing it would it be ok?
What can I say I Love Her, But I also love F1
damnit!
Errr no? Having said that, my bf likes to go to sleep with the radio on. He mysteriously manages to wake up if I turn it off in the middle of the night. I do put up with that but it's mega annoying.
:)
You live on Japanese time all the time....
Tough customer!
oh yeah. 6am is pushing it though.
that's an hour after i usually sleeps.
No I live in the UK
Noooo. Mr C is nocturnal :P
I'd say it reaches its most irritating when 5live go on their stupid loop because they've not broadcast rights.....
That said, I almost miss the noise now he's away.
Whoops thought you meant me!
YOU CAN GET BIKE INDICATORS!!!!
p.s i used the preview button :D
Just for the record this can NEVER be mentioned.....
w00t! and whoop :)
are you getting some?
i reaaaaaaaaaaaally want some, like REALLY want some. it even has brake lights for goodness sake!!!
Hehehe it looks like it makes an irritating sounds though.
How does it know when you're braking? Woud you need to connect them up somewhere?
i'd cut off the buzzers :D
I have no idea, but they make me very happy
I see. Well, I did not see the movie. The idea of a Jamaician Bobseld team was about as stupid as an English ski-jumping team...
Honestly, if there was a comedy about "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards, I promise you that it would have footage of Vinko Bogataj's March 21st, 1970 wipeout.
For those of you that have seen ABC's Wide World of Sports, that's the early "Agony of Defeat guy".....
You could just put it on anyway..... Im sure you could download some TMS recordings somewhere ;)
I think I should try and enjoy the silence.... If I got too used to the noise, he'd mock me for life.
Night all. I stayed up too late. Again.
But your nearly there.... FP1!!!
Hello all, I'll replace Pat
Night Pat
Night!
Night if you are going though!
Evening Joe
Hey, joining us for FP1?
#f1 Just heard that FOTA will back the 14th team process and will exclude Williams again from FOTA if they need to. Messy stuff, again.Via @Mike_griffin
Watching a tyre test session at that time really isn't appealing :-)
I have a webstore :D
uber cool
Does Monaco have 14 (28) garages?
What have William's done now?
Dunno i have asked @mike_griffin
I had no idea, we don't see FP1 in the US, the beer will take it's toll before it starts
Williams vetoed the 14th team entry.
Wonder Why!
Will there be a linik for FP1
Almost home
If they kick them out because they use a Veto then it makes a mockery of having the group
There is the to-KERS-or-not-to-KERS question and I think they are also blocking an increase to the brake rotor thickness (28mm to 32mm) for 2010.
You sure you have that name right? http://twitter.com/mike_griffin
Less cash I expect
Ooh, late one was it?
RT @5LiveF1: Timo Glock unwell, Kobayashi takes his place for first practice
Nope http://www.twitter.com/mike_griffin_f1
In half an hour?
They veto EVERYTHING. Spoilsports. I don't think they're playing very fair. They were really rude about rejoining as well. I wouldn't have said they were very popular in FOTA at the moment....
There are other ways to watch F1, other than SpeedTV.
Damn, it's been a long day already. Ran 7.5 miles in the AM, played 18 holes in the PM, Budweiser now. But I did set my DVR for FP2, all us Americans can get
Hi again :)
I have come to the conclusion Scrubs was not written by humans but by some kind of super writer that us humans cannot comprehend
Im not sure what that means, it wi certainly be good with the fans.... is he really unwell or has he fallen out with toyota?
First 3 seasons were good, then it all went a bet meh for me
I have never watched it, but if you like it, I'll look at the reruns. "This goes to eleven"
Episode with ben with 'that' ending = train landing on top of you. How can a show be so brilliantly funny then mindnumbingly tragic so quickly?
Like Nick says, check out any of the first 3 seasons at least. Genius progamming.
Roger that
There were so many great episodes... i love hearing 99 red ballons in german dor no reason other than that show... also NEED a sugar hill gang alarm clock
I am giving my Ferrari flag away, is Kimi going to end up at Mclaren?
Sudden urge to dance about in a room with 99 red balloons
Home now
I totally rekon he will leave F1 at the end of the season and go to Rallying
Welcome home, the best feeling in the world
Should not Monaco have about 33 garages from the days when the 11 teams had 2 race cars and a reserve set up for one of the drivers? If not 33 then at least 30?
Quite Possibly
Your kidding me! I didn't know FP1 was on now, this is only going to be mocking me!!! Booooo
I should go. Night all!
:(
I alway thought Kimi looked odd in red
They had pre quali in those days. the garages have also been completely rebuilt since then and the pitlane is the other side of them...
T-cars were setup in the space between the two other cars. Don't forget, Monaco's pits are only 5 years old or so.
Will enjoy a beer outside, waiting for FP1, will talk to you later
Finally, a free practice at a decent time.
#sorryeveryoneineurope
I actualy concur for this one, much easier than normal FP1!
Not to sure about fp2 though
I hope they installed a revolving door at the FOTA headquarters for Williams.
Also, watching opening night of the NHL. Habs versus Maple Leafs, 2-2.
That's silly. I am like talking 1997 here. I mean when the plans for the 1997 season where finalized you would have expected Lola and Stewart to show up for the 1997 Monaco Grand Prix... Okay maybe Arrows was a stretch, but still....
But we are not taking about the days when Mr. c was a silent partner in the Leyton-House March here!..... :P ...
How about this as an idea...
For the European races (truck-away races) allow a 3rd car. The car is to be run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for 1-2 hour each day. The cars are not inspected other than for safety. (i.e. teams can treat this a a test session and try anything). Only test / reserve drivers get to drive.
This should not be too expensive, give more show, get the reserve / recruit drivers some seat time and allow in-season testing.
Previously known as Friday testing with the 3rd drivers
If you're on the west coast, as I am the latest start time is 10pm. This is probably the only race run at a decent time over here this year.
I personally like the idea of adding an optional Thursday test session for teams for European races only. Either that or expand FP1 and 2 to an open five hour session.
It's been done, 2006? 07? i forget. Fans liked it, but then they changed it to a "you CAN use your test driver" so teams only used race drivers
you'd have to limit drivers running though
However ONLY the test driver is allowed out, forcing "seat time" so there should be no "Alguasuari has no F1 experience" or "Schumacher has not F1 Experience" situations.
Well actually Alguasuari wasnt the test driver, Hartley was, but your point stands
Good point, I've included it. Once I knock off Bernie, Max, Gene Todt, and the rest of the group in a Michael Corleone-eqs move for power, I will include that in my agenda.
You could also go on to ban the use of any of the engine / transmission (must use in X number of races) parts in the race cars but allow stuff like the aero package to be swapped in-and-out.
As for the use of the T-car in 2005/6/7, they also had in season testing. With no in-season testing there would be a big incentive to get the rookies out there. You could also invite GP2 drivers.
To Limit the driver should be fairly easy. The 2 regular drivers are not allowed to drive. If the "test" driver is promoted to a race drive (e.g. injury to a race driver during the weekend) he can no longer drive in the T sessions. Other than that it's open door.
While I agree with BC's views on this matter I have the funny feeling that Max and Bernie would love this idea so much that they would include this idea for 2011. Too bad that in pursuit of their "no testing" mana that they will not include a single European race in the clanedar starting from 2011 as well. :P ....
Wow. Vettel's trying to use the Monza Engine at Suzuka. Engine blow-up might be seen.
Can someone explain why Kobayashi has apparently replaced Glock for this race?
Glock has a "cold." I get the feeling the team wants to give management an incentive to keep the team going.
Ahh... it is so nice to have Suzuka back on the calendar. Just a mega circuit.
Seems a lot of people have picked up colds between Singapore and Japan.
I can't believe how many drivers on the grid have never raced here before. Lewis, Hekki, Vettel, ect, ect.
It's been too long
Join us in the FP1 thread Dan
Bed 4 me... night all.
There are much worse things out there, especially if company directors remember that rules are for the guidance of the wise...
Depends. Sometimes the solution is blindingly obvious to everyone except those in the company. Of course there are many other times when it isn't and the straightforward solutions generally proposed by outsiders don't work. It's not a coincidence that neither of the two occasions Jordan brought in management consultants worked particularly well...
Enjoy FP2 guys!
Spyker and Super Aguri have both benefited from such a decision (Spyker in Nurburgring 2007 and Super Aguri in Canada 2007).
Will do :)
Nobody outside the team knew with enough certainty to put the accusation openly until Piquet Jr. confessed. I doubt Renault had planned for that contingency and I'm not even sure it's possible.
I'm having to stay quiet because my parents are asleep upstairs (they have to go to work quite early tomorrow).
Williams just isn't cut out for this "collective action" stuff, is it?
Why would Williams object to thicker brakes?
We were talking about it last night. They seem to be vetoing for the sake of vetoing...
The shock to the driver market may be: Kubica to Toyota.
Whoever's more committed to the sport will get Kubica, I'd think. :D But if I were Kubica, I'd pick Renault. Toyota will bring his career to a deadend.
They were designed for 24 cars, in line with the Concorde Agreement at the time. That said, I believe they can accomodate 26 cars because that's the track capacity limit. There wouldn't have been any point in them having more garages than permitted cars, which makes me a bit worried about how they'll manage if there are 14 teams on the grid.
BTW, from Mr Noble:
Here's what I suspect - winner gets Kubica, the other has to settle for Kovalainen.
Alguersuari was the tester for one race before racing, but that's not really enough experience to step up to F1 properly either. He's doing well considering, but...
Amy won't be pleased, but I can see why the driver market could pan out like that.
that sounds like "the winner takes it all" :-)
the loser has to fall... :D
They can say that the engine must come out of the pool of four test engines each team is already permitted. Gearboxes would be a little more complicated - perhaps allow two per team per season for this purpose?
This isn't body-clock-change-induced, by any chance?
Someone should tell Williams that it is a good idea to pick battles when attempting collaboration.
I'm sure it is. That plus the fluctuating weather conditions.
Williams seems to prefer the status quo now. It doesn't seem to need allies because it doesn't seem to want anything new.
GP3 Entry List
F1, GP2, GP3
MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3
See any parallels? ;)
I suspect GP3's aim is to replace F3 as the main GP2 feeder series. They may also want to target headlining the Macau GP.
Updated previous comment.
So, who is staying up for FP2. I get the feel that it is going to be just us in North America and in the Far East.
Woops, wrong thread.
Repost
So now Massa thinks the Piquet's crash cost him the world title. I'm sorry, I thought a bad Ferrari pit stop was his problem in Singapore? Come on Felipe, give us a break.
Indeed. The C's will be up for it, but not sure who else in Europe will be.
I'm staying up (and not even attempting to nap between sessions). I will sleep well tonight.
oops, Macau, reminds me to sort out the tickets for this year ...
But you could say that had the SC not been triggered, there would've been no need to use the manual override that caused the mistake.
Anyway, we discussed this in detail yesterday. You might want to check yesterday's daily to see what we thought of it.
Given how Barrichello's broken-down car would almost certainly have brought out the Safety Car a lap later (thus causing pit lane congestion and the switch to manual signalling in the Ferrari garage), I doubt it would have made much difference what Piquet Jr. did with regard to the title's destiny.
I guess Macau is super cheap from where you are. How much does the whole trip cost (including tickets)? Am thinking if it's worth going to sometime in future.
Fair enough, will do.
Carry on, nothing to see here.
But then had he stopped somewhere else, the car could've been pushed to safety without an SC. Still, very difficult to judge either way.
It's nice that he is well enough to talk about this stuff again.
Anyone who thinks two "latinos" at Ferrari will make for smooth sailing is kidding themselves
That's not really the point. It was a Ferrari error that lost him that race. I hate drivers who complain about what could have been a year ago.
Now, I'm not talking about this. Old news. ;-)
Which begs the question - when was the last time Ferrari ran two Latins?
:D
90s sometime? Did who partnered Alasi?
FIA fail #468
Did I just type that? Please ignore.
They're friends. That might help.
Ah yes, Alesi-Capelli in 1992. But Capelli was so awful, there was no rivalry involved.
Was that quote from yesterday's thread? Mr C might not be too pleased... But I do agree.
Nicola Larini/Jean Alesi in early 1994, I think.
Nurburgring 2007 suggested otherwise, although Alonso backed Massa for the 2008 title.
Larini replaced Alesi when Alesi had a minor injury, so they weren't teammates.
It's early in the morning. As far as I'm concerned, that's excuse enough even if it's not early in the morning where you actually are...
Even friends have minor fallings-out occasionally.
Alonso was very friendly towards Hamilton until he started beating him.
Alonso has a track record of not liking being challenged from within his own team.
Point taken. For some reason I'd got it into my head that Larini replaced Berger...
True. Hence the "might".
Except for me, I'm at work and it's 1:30pm.
Although Alesi seemed Italian, he was french.
Personally I was a bit dissapointed with Massa claiming this cost him the World Championship. Although the circumstances might have contributed to a pitlane mistake, it was a teamwork mistake that was the ultimate mistake. I know in football results are annulled if match fixing is found. An Olympic champion loses their medals if found having taken illegal substances. There is some precedence but in F1 the rules are not the same. I feel that it is unfair that Renault and Alonso have a win on their record book which is undeserved.
On paper, it is the "super" team. Only the potential McLaren lineup would challenge it.
Come to think of it, you may be right.
*checks Wikipedia*
Capelli was sacked before 1992 ended, and Larini replaced him for the rest of the season, thus becoming teammates with Alesi. Capelli failed to finish in the top 10 however, with Alesi finishing both races in the top 5.
Going to be tears and tantrums - I do not fully understand why Kimi was dumped - he clearly did not want to go and its really rather unfair.
So Badoer was not the first "curious" choice for Ferrari driver then!
He was from the French part of Sicily. Latin enough for me :)
It is going to cost Ferrari their third place in the Constructors championship.
Sadly I think you're right.
Who was partnering Morbidelli in 91-92?
Maybe, although Both Kimi and Fisi are looking OK here, and Brazil has never been good for McLaren.
Alesi.
Ah, right.
He replaced Prost for Australia 1991. He wasn't in a Ferrari for 92, he was at Minardi with Christian Fittipaldi.
My Ferrari knowledge is non-existent.
Some thoughts on Kubica to Toyota - to me this suggests that Toyota will not pull the plug if they get a "star" driver like Robert. That they have dropped their options on Timo is to clear the way. They even suggested they were trying to get Kimi. If they do get a star driver they probably will consider Glock. Jarno has no hope nor sadly Kaz of a Toyota drive.
Lewis/Macca are currently very strong though - their weakness is Hamilton is heavy on tyres with his setup so a one stop option could not be used like the way Brawn got their 1-2 at Monza.
Yep, you are right. For some reason I thought Ferrari were 18 points ahead, but it's only 3. Scratch what I said, Ferrari are in big danger of loosing 3rd place.
Macca is a better car and Kovy should still be capable to score more points than Fisi.
Considering Ferrari stopped car development before Mclaren did, I agree.
Not to mention the fact they actively stop people watching streaming on the web, even if you can't get any sort of live telecast.
I forgot that significant point.
T - Minus One Hour till FP2
It always the part I forgot about Brawn, is not only is he good at designing and engineering a car, but he is so good at developing their initial concepts. I think that is the difference between he and Newey. Brawn seems to come up with refinements better.
Certainly seems the case this year doesn't it?
Newey got the double diffuser working well with the rest of the car in season. Engine reliability has also been a big issue for the RB team and Vettel especially
Didn't sleep for a second. Never mind
Has anyone seen the news that Mark Webber has a GP3 team next year or am I just hopelessly out of the loop?
Welcome back Steven. You didn't miss much.
I saw the Webber news before I went to bed the first time and Christian Horner mentioned it during FP1
I posted the Autosport link a few comments ago...
Toyota are chasing Kubica even though they haven't got a budget sorted and they have not taken up the option on Timo's contract. Very odd
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79109
Just found out tha the hosts for the 2016 Olympics will be decided today.
Chicago
Rio de Janeiro
Tokyo
Madrid
Rubens just twittered:
the forecast is for no rain tomorrow afternoon...we will not run a lot on the 2nd session today
I think it is going to be a boring session.
Will be announced in 12 hours or so. It'll be VERY tight between Chicago and Rio, but I suspect it'll be Chicago 2016, Rio 2020.
Not bad for me. I don't miss anything while I take my certification exam. :D
It can't go to the USA again. They have had two Olympics in the last 25 years
Tell that to the Obamas and Oprah.
Rio/Brazil also has the World Cup in 2014. Too much too soon, I suspect.
Goooooo!!!!! Rio!
A team can dream...
and Spain had olympics in 1992 ...
anyway, I see the whole Olympics as one money wasting medals counting theatre full of sports that that no one cares about. can't care less ...
Just listening to the Italian GP version of the podcast that got plugged earlier. One of them got married on a GP Sunday???? Are they serious?
After seeing the economic data from Vancouver and Salt Lake, It is a complete and total waste of money. Billions spent for millions earned. On top of that, the International Olympic Committee makes the FIA look like angel.
It is not odd at all and its not a dream. If Toyota get "star" driver like Robert or Kimi they will get funding, otherwise they will not. It is all or nothing and they have identified the issues as not being team or chassis. I do agree with their assessment and I think Timo is awesome because he can look after his tyres better than any other driver. Choice between Renault or Toyota knowing it will go to the grid in 2010 - difficult but I can see the Toyota is more attractive than it might first appear.
I think Sydney did OK out of it, but that was pre-security stupidness. It's probably much more expensive now.
I see it the same way. People couldn't understand why I didn't want London to get the 2012 games
I am not proud to say this but Chicago has a lot of things that it needs to spend money on like schools and infrastructure. The Olympics would be like adding paint to a rusted out hull.
well, people talk about F1, but at least when a place gets a deal for a race that race keeps coming back for several years. Olympics require these days years of bid preparation, 7 years of bulding, all for 16 days of action. and then the headache what to do with all the white elephants that remain ...
it is raining in Japan, but here I have sun shining through my window. I believe this is the first time since since I moved to this office 6 months ago that the sun made it through the clouds, smog and the surrounding buildings, miracle :-)
Finally!
http://www.formula1.com/video/
Singapore onboard is up - and it's from Mr. Vettel.
Agreed. Unfortunately, most people value the Olympics more because they see it as more of a sport than F1...
I have to stop here :-)
Yes - the meeting is in Copenhagen. No disruptions as yet so fingers crossed...
Great Analogy between F1 and overclocking a computer!
FTA:
Well, well, well, look what we have here...
Schumacher “was involved in decision” to hire Alonso
FTA:
Stop it! I want to like Ferrari again!
:D
How do you see Alonso?
I've always liked the man. One of the best, if not the best driver in F1. He was badly treated at McLaren and acted out as a result.
He's Brilliant and devious and ruthless - and I cannot wait to see him against Massa, Hamilton and Raikkonen next year. It will be total war!
More importantly, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8285380.stm?lsf
Biology: Fumiaki Taguchi, Song Guofu and Zhang Guanglei of Kitasato University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in Sagamihara, Japan, for demonstrating that kitchen refuse can be reduced more than 90% in mass by using bacteria extracted from the faeces of giant pandas.
Not sure what Christine will think of that... Well, if it preserves the pandas, why not?
Weren't those the expectations we had in 2007? We got war, but it was a very peculiar one...
At the risk of repeating myself, he was badly treated during that year and was not able to perform his best. It was a mistake to let Hamilton go after him and not sit back and learn from Alonso - there were times last year where he could have benefited more from that experience...
That's true. Even so, Hamilton still ended up champ, and had less competition from his new teammate. I'm sure he wouldn't see that as a bad thing.
I may be behind the times but Autosport are saying Toyota are after Kubica!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79109
BBC say they are after Raikkonen too...
The thing is would you want to go and drive for them? They are really smarting after this Brawn thing aren't they?
And apparently Kimi has been seen back in the McLaren garage again today!
They want the kitchen sink as well...
Nature's refuse compaction system...
i would have to find a new job if they put me on this 10-6 shift every week. As much as i like a sleep in i cant stand being at work late because i cant do anything after work as everywhere is shut. Live example: i had to get up early for the doctor yesterday even though i started work at 10.30 so my sleep in was negated anyway. Oh well 6 more stupid late shifts then i am on leave :D
So the recording of most of the evening's talk between Stirling Moss and Murray Walker is up on the drop:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/giggles-stirling-moss-and-murray-walker-m4a
I missed two interesting questions at the beginning about how Stirling got started and how he felt about his dad
Stirling said he and his dad had been mates, Murray asked him if his dad had been domineering and Stirling said put it this way if he'd done something wrong he told his mum so she could tell his dad, but that they'd always been mates
But the rest of it's there... Don't get too disheartened by the sound quality in the first little bit they were having a problem with Stirling's microphone which is why nobody is talking and there are just some people mumbling. Suddenly you will hear the unmistakable voice of Murray Walker and you'll be fine :)
Right near the end you'll hear a question from me, I wish I could have started it with "This is Alex on the internet" but I don't have that kind of celebrity! And I didn't get to mention sidepodcast on the recording either. But it wasn't that kind of evening. My question was, "if you could change one rule in formula 1 what would it be?" And it might be a lot louder than the rest - sorry about that!
Morning all (again).
Morning.
hooray for alex...on the internet. I wonder what i have to do to be amy...on the internet.
looks like I haven't missed much by missing the FP2, other than this probably:
- link
you are already Amy ... on twitter. You will have to blog a bit more before you can become Amy ... on the internet
Brilliant. Thanks! :)
amy...on twitter works for me *happy cricket memories*
:D
amy of the fuel weights. :D too bad there's none of that next year...
must work out who f1scoop actually is and hold them to their promises :D
I think this calls for a wiki page with "X of the... " nicknames...
We were just told that a new procedure was being put on the noticeboard, and we've all come to the conclusion that we don't actually know where the noticeboard is.
Clearly it is not very noticeable.
I am having a Thursday today - my Friday meeting was yesterday and I spilled water all over my desk...
:)
We had a similar problem not that long ago. Turned out the guy meant something on the intranet which is actually called something completely different but he was using the term from his old firm.
I think it might be because I missed the baby pandas. I'm worried I haven't managed to contain Thursday's bad luck to Thursday.
Just found out that Vettel was royally screwed over in Singapore with that Pit-Lane speeding penalty, because they don't measure speed through the pitlane, they measure time. Apparently he cut a bit of the corner into the entrance giving him a faster time through the pits, despite the fact he was under the speed limit when he hit the white lines marking the pit-lane. Basically he was penalized for taking a more direct line leading into the pit entrance before entering the pit area itself.
Don't blame him one bit for being p****d off, that really ruined his race and also championship run.
These ladies are living Lou's dream: http://twitpic.com/jxk9t
Hehe! We have sent someone off on a search.
Not very #MFC to have a noticeboard, is it?
Yes, and I totally agree that the rule should be changed.
Oops, language peoples.
This may be the most un #MFC place in the country.
Oops. Sorry.
No probs. Vettel did seem quite confused by the penalty. How do they time it, then, because surely pit stops are all different times?
I didn't know you worked in the Rockall Dept. of the company I worked for?
Did you know that in my previous employment, I was involved in the process to turn all paper records into online PDFs, and also to test and develop an online permiting, registration and mapping system?
They have a beam that you cross and another beam that you cross and they measure how much time you took to travel between the two of them and divide by the distance between the two to work out your speed.
However.... Because he came in to the pit lane at an angle he crossed the first beam but actually travelled a shorter distance between the two.
What about the time actually stopped though? That's going to mess all the calculations up, isn't it?
Speed = distance/time - therefore Time = Speed*distance so if the speed is fixed and you know the length between the pit exit and entry, you can figure it out.
That said, I have no idea how the slowing down, stopping for a pitstop and speed up to the limit is factored in. Seems very harsh that he was penalised...
I don't think they measure that bit which makes it triply stupid.
How? I don't understand that at all.
I think they also have timing points from the start of the garages as well, which is after the beginning of the pit area. If you're not on the pitlane speed limiter by then, you very well should be, because I don't think they measure your time travelling alongside the garages,
I think they measure the entrance to the first pit and the last pit to the exit of the pit. But not the bit in the middle.
And the problem is you don't know the distance because you are allowed to cut the white line on entry. Which was Vettel's problem. His on board showed he didn't speed.
A guy came over to me and asked me for help with his computer the other day. Not really my job but okay... "What's wrong with it," I ask. "It's making a kind of beeping noise". I'm not sure what's going on so I wonder over. He's left his notepad resting on his keyboard...
Whoops.
Ooh, you should start charging :)
I really should!
Noooo Felipe :(
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79108
he's going to make me not like him
Morning all
After his graciousness in defeat last year, his bitterness is surprising.
Perhaps he realises that was his chance gone?
I think so
So it seems the pit lane speed monitoring system as it stands
a) can't deal with drivers cutting the white line on the way in to the pits
and
b) can't actually measure speed when the cars are most dangerously near the pit crew
and
c) all the cars have a common ECU that broadcasts the car speed to the FIA
but
d) the FIA don't use that.
Hmmmm...
I think the FIA should request telemetry data - it's the only accurate way of knowing.
He did also say that he wouldn't want to win the world championship now by it just being handed to him afterwards and that that wouldn't feel right. But that bit isn't in the Autosport article for some reason.
The problem is they already have access to it all... but don't use it
Is that right? Hmm, not like AUTSOPROT to be partial? Very Planet-F1...
They get sent it all the time constantly. They just are using an old fashioned method to measure from the times before they could guarantee the data was right
The light beam method should be more accurate than the telemetry.
There is history of cheating the light beam though, when it was used for lap timing.
Morning everyone, just got up and have missed both free practice sessions. :)
What about the transponders they use to measure lap times?
Don't feel too bad - apparently not much happened...
:)
i need to pick up some spring onions on my way home today. Please cross your fingers my supermarket has some because they never seem to have any
A transponder is little different from a light beam in the way it works. They could use that to record speed limit but it would give exactly the same result in this case. The transponder has nothing to do with telemetry.
It seems like something that should be simple to police has been made over-complicated. Only the FIA could do this!
Should Red Bull be operating so close to the speed limit that cutting off the corner sends them "over"? They either need to have slightly more margin or not cut off the corner.
Is Glock expected to be back for Quali?
Morning. FP2 sounded... what's the word..
wet.
Light-beam over-complicated? They could only make it simpler if they had a guy out with a stop-watch.
Isn't the definition of a successful F1 team one that cuts every rule and variable as close as legally possible?
Question... does anyone think that Glock was declared 'ill' just to give a Japanese driver a run in the car?
If they play on the edge they have to accept they sometimes fall over it.
I have them crossed but am unsure as to my power in these matters.
#giggles?
Maybe. Unlikely though.
Did they send Kobi out on fumes though?
I don't believe in crossing fingers. It may be more effective to start an internet rumour that spring onions cause heart disease and then they may still have some left.
Not as far as Lee McKenzie is concerned she said he seemed very ill yesterday.
Does she have medical experience though? Could be just man flu. :-D
Shhhh!
True! It was rather that she interviewed him and said something like he didn't seem to be feeling very well before there was any talk of him missing a session.
Hmm, just a conspiracy theory I suppose. There are tales of drivers being very ill and still racing, however...
I'm listening to FP1 and Ted, Crofty and Davidson were a bit suspicious about it.
It does seem precautionary to let Timo get some rest. Would they have taken that precaution outside of Japan, seems a more realistic question?
We loves our conspiracies!
Sorry I'm catching up, was the Canon sponsorship a one time thing for Brawn?
We do! The conversation probably went:
Glock: I don't feel well.
Toyota: You know, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you took the day off. We're not planning much running anyway.
Yes, they've got a local beer sponsoring them in Brazil.
Yep.
I think they're looking for a deal next year though
:D
I mean, they only replaced him with a japanese driver at a japanese track in a japanese team who's team future has been shakier than a snowglobe as well as a driver future suddenly opening up after Glock saying so. So yeah, totally not conspiracy worthy. ;)
Brawn are trying to milk the season for as many free cases of beer, cameras and cinema tickets as they can get by having one-off sponsorship deals. Pure genius.
I'm so annoyed... In my Top 5 people who should sponsor F1 but don't I said FujiFilm should sponsor F1 so people don't forget about the mountain. But actually their rival Cannon turn up!
:)
have just left the building. Hope you are still crossing.
That's what I thought - glad I'm not the only one! :D
What's wrong with Fuji Television instead?
Thanks :)
Toyota are chasing Kubica and/or Raikkonen for next year? Doesn't sound like a team that is leaving.
I can see Kubica there. Not sure Raikkonen would want to, would he?
Good luck to Rory from last night... He's being taken by his Granddad to Hamlys today. Although he'd worked it out and found the there was a Carphone Warehouse right next door. He told me he was going to say to his Granddad that he didn't find anything he wanted in the shop and so instead they better pop around the corner and get him an iPhone instead.
Hopefully he'll come along to the site when he gets home and say Hi. It was confusing. He was from the north of England, had quite a thick accent like, and was 14... So I was expecting him to be RG. But then he told me he was a huge Brawn fan, who wasn't pleased about Rubens going to Williams. So he was a mix of RG and Lukeh.
I told him he'd fit right in!
Maybe the team don't want to leave, but the car company who pays the bills might think differently...
Me either.
Not likely. Where does Kimi want to be though?
He said a team capable of winning the championship, which pretty much narrows down his options.
Unless next year turns on it's head like this one, and Force India start dominating.
I'm sure at this point Amy would say McLaren. I'd agree ;)
Toyota have been capable for years ... they just seem to fall over all the time :(
You know, I watched Suzuka 2005 last night, and it is amazing how different Kimi Raikkonen drives in that car. Although he won the championship for Ferrari, his best days were at McLaren...
And I don't think a driver can change that. Except possibly Alonso or that other German fellow.
He's seen the early models of next year's Ferrari and jumped ship? ;-)
Have they really though? I've seen the odd podium here or there. No real challenge as far as I can recall (which isn't far).
Alguersuari?
They have the ingredients to make a really nice cake, but the problem is they have a Mr. C. who is the baker :D
Hmm. To me that means they're not capable. Mr C is not capable of baking a cake. Toyota aren't capable of winning a championship.
Neither do I. This idea of Kaizen does not work in F1. Corporate teams have all failed when they try and impose their methods on good engineers. If Toyota were less hands on, I think they could have done it. Too late now though :(
I've said capable too much. It looks weird now.
You are incapable of having the capacity to capable type the word 'capable' in a suitably capable capability?
But what if Mr. C bought the ingredients and asked you to bake the cake?
If Toyota were less involved with the team then I think they would do better.
Is that going to happen in time for them to win over Raikkonen?
Agreed, but Alonso deserved the championship that year.
They were strong in 2005 and should have made the step up to race wins in 2006 but like BAR Honda did in 2005 after their strong 2004 season they went backwards.
He shouldn't ask us to bake the cake though, he should ask Gary Rhodes or someone and then get out of the kitchen and leave him to it.
No. It's too late for that, sadly. Had they done this a few years ago it would have worked, but like Jaguar, Honda and BMW they made the same mistakes and failed.
who would want to go to the team that has so boring merchandise that nobody wants to buy ? who would wear Kimi hat if his name was on Toyota cap ?
there is nobody ever queuing up at Toyota booths at the races, even putting Ralf with marker in hand did not help at one of the races I went to
It's not very nice of Williams to formally request dropping Toyota as it's engine supplier at Suzuka of all weekends.
The only time I queued up at a Toyota stand was to see Franck.
I wish I had been watching FP1 live now De la Rosa teaching Hamilton, love it. :D
and he is no longer there :-)
Stoopid Toyota.
only team i didnt have to line up to buy a coffee mug from was toyota. I had spring onion success and i found a new flavour of magnum!
Spring onion magnum? What will they think of next?
this one!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/image3-jpg
it wins because its wrapper is purple. I'm glad no team has purple livery, I might be forced to give up on McLaren.
Fan of Simtek then?
ZOMG you have a rice cooker and a George Foreman? :D
I have discovered RG's secret identity:
Bruce Bueno de Mesquita
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Predictioneers-Game-Brazen-Self-Interest-Future/dp/1400067871/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254476880&sr=8-1
They weren't quite the ride shade. Gotta be fussy.
neither of which are mine :D
Also a cameo appearance from this tshirt.
ahh, kill me now. is it sunday yet?
but,....qualifying! thats the best part!
Cool - have you got that 'http://www.clothesline.co.nz/menstees/Keep New Zealand Beautiful.htm' one too?
Whats up?
sleeep!
Finally. A weekend with F1 on at a sensible time
hehe. i take back everything i said last weekend about daytime free practice. 6am is the most awful time in the world.
did any cars actually go out?
noo, but I do have this one as a singlet :D
over rated. Although if all the world sleeps after qualifying MY WEIGHTS WILL WIN.
Who knows. Had to leave work early.
Well, didn't have to, but did anyway.
Apparently Alonso broke the silence after an entire hour.
It will be the shortest F1 Digest ever.
f1 digest minute?
Summary: Tim was on top for a bit, a paper boat went down the pit lane, a few other drivers got wet.
didn't have to, wanted to...
Hello all, slept through everything and now watching the rain on the red button. jackie/saltire just got a mention.
I'm tempted by the replay just so I can see the boat.
and to think i berated fuji.
#sorryfuji
I wonder if that is ever taken the wrong way? :D
cool. what did she ask?
I was really only there for the interwebs. WIth nobody looking like running I saw no reason to stay!
Australians ask me what it means, Kiwis nod and smile and seem to start dreaming of their childhood.
mr. c? what happened to me? :P
There is a replay?
Something about air flow disrupting following cars. TBH I was reading the comments and not really listening, I just heard them say "saltire" and though, I know that name
i fear this may need a blog post :)
we changed the way wordpress reports blog entries (related to the redesign), and that means it sometimes reports me as mr. c.
so, i'm sort of trialing it.
Yes a blog post is needed. It will take some getting used to, I'd miss "me" maybe a poll is needed :)
me makes for more confusion and interest.
besides, new visitors then have no idea who Mr C is!
I could do you a breakout thread :)
i don't have the energy ;)
Is that power going to you head?
Nope. I missed all the fun of the last breakout thread :(
hehe. okay, lemmie get through sunday and then we can.
have reverted back to being me again.
:)
I almost didn't say anything, as it did cross my mind that you might be someone else.
hes back. Sanity returns
Madness. Since we started people have moaned about your lack of name.
Lack of body as well.
this comment made me chuckle :)
you're confusing people too though. in the feeds you have a surname, in the posts, you have a surname, on youtube and facebook you have a surname.
everywhere but the comments :)
anyone would think we're doing it on purpose.
Hehe, erm, no, I don't know anyone who has moaned about that.
:)
we know he has hands, we've seen them on the live debrief a few times.
Hand on the end of a stick and computer generated voice. Clearly.
I don't think you can compare dropping a surname to naming yourself a pronoun.
:D
:D
:D
adds to the mystery of the me
Hehe I never noticed that before.
Don't know if these have been posted.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qTOUZgAVfo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY7fJ-T0gGY
I don't get the second one.
you are not alone :-)
glad i'm not the only one ;)
Morning all
My opinion on the great co-host naming debate is this:
'me' is quite an individual monika and folk have gotten used to it. I think it stands out.
We all know Christine so that isn't an issue. 'Mr C' is a little like just one of the crowd which for newcommers is important to make the distinction. It's also a nice lead in to how the place works a littlewhen they ask "who is this 'me' person?"
Plus, there's the whole 'All we know is that they call him me' wiki page ;)
What a clanger. Very weird!
#mfc this can't be the tablet can it? http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/09/apple-tablet-everything/
I got the Piquet in the dodgem but the rest had little meaning.
That looks too big for a 10" screen
There were rumours earlier in the week about it having the iPhone OS
I just assumed it would be running Snow Leopard with all it's stripped down goodness
#MFC 3D TV is coming ... starting with 3DHD sports events.
What is interesting here is that apparently without the glasses, it appears as a normal 2D broadcast - very good idea!
Loved being able to wake up and find FP2 on tv this morning. Pity it was raining ;) How are we all?
Looks like everyone is at lunch or having a nap...
I am watching a replay of FP2 and drinking that Passiona I didn't get to have last weekend :D
T-shirts will be printed, saying "I am me".
:)
Helloooo I think I'd like to say that it's no wonder the grandstands are empty with so little running....
I've put the Pole Poll post up. This is an extra reminder because just before qualifying starts is quite early tomorrow:
http://www.sofaf1.com/2009/10/japanese-pole-poll.html
I read that as the 'pope poll post' that confused me greatly
Morning alll
I'm watching FP2 replay, I know I'm way behind and not much happens but I'm listening for the 5Live commentry ;)
Suzuka really impresses me: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/capture-jpg
Did a paper boat really float down the pitlane?
We do also decide the new popes when it's time.
Pics or it didn't happen ;)
I am actually turning into a dad type figure... I was feeling a bit chilly and was going to go and turn the heating up, but just stopped myself short and thought, "no I better put a jumper on".
Hehehe. I have always thought like that. Am I a dad type figure too? :)
Sounds like it ;)
Can we call you Igor?
Nooo that's just sensible!
I think that could get very confusing ;)
Ooooh I didn't become sensible somewhere along the line did I?
some people might think it odd that you live on the other side of the world yet I know your dads name.
Do you think Nick is having a staring match with Anthony Hamilton in this picture?
Scary stuff. I hate it when people turn their heating up too high.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-279
Positively sensible!
Very Stylish.
You do look very sensible, but I think it is all an act :)
I think Kazuki is going to come out of my screen and hurt me. Hey man, I've seen The Ring (actually I haven't but I know what happens)
They all look pretty bored.
It doesn't make much sense either... People all run at different temperatures so it's better to tailor the heating devices to the individuals ;)
Timo is wearing a jacket - is he already sick here?
They are all Infected!!!
Don't get me started on that one!
Now I have the episode of the US Office when they're all changing the temperature in my mind!
Probably sick of being asked about Fernonso.
I have tried to compensate:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-280
Perfect.
Look itchy! do you own any hoodies or is the hoodie/collar combo a step to far ;)
ZIPPY!!!
That hat works with anything
owe zjippy!
It's not itchy at all... I wonder what it's made of?
True story :)
Tbh aren't you supposed to be working.... I think that could offset the sensibleness!
100% lambswool it turns out. I hope the lamb didn't need it
True story
MIND THE CAP
Maybe the lamb was warmin enough in the oven? That gives me an idea for supper!
perhaps your jumper needs mint sauce?
Salti got a mention again? I'm beginning to wonder if there is something going on between her and DC?
Only you could get away with a comment like that ;)
He had a temperature of 39.1 this morning. That's almost into Swine Flu territory.
It's come down though.
I wouldn't bet on it.
If we assume that wasn't a fib - surely you remember when you were at school faking a high temp to get the day off?
If I keep commenting I can push it way down the Doohickey :-)
He was fine in the press conference yesterday. How did you learn of his temperature.
Some people don't want to go to school? *faints
Team's press conference: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79138
Why wouldn't Glock want to race though?
Heh, Toyota have their own team doctor. He could have been told anything ;)
It might be all wet and soggy.... eww?
Must be genuine. Most of us would have said 39. Only a team principal would give one decimal place - except Ron Dennis who would have had it to three places and declared the error.
I don't think it's not wanting to race - it was so that Kobayashi could have arun today...
He is German though. German efficiency and all that.
Glock is faking a high temperature to let another driver in his seat?
Or just Flu
Contrary to popular belief, having a high temperature doesn't mean you have swine flu :P
or there is something else going on :P
Just for practice?
Maybe the team told him to do it with a contract threat? :D
Unless you ate burnt pork too :P
Pretty sure a high temperature will not prompt the safety car to come out - unless they're literally on fire.
It doesnt? What does it mean...
Did we ever work out why Ferrari were in white gear in free practice in singapore?
Vettel switched back to engine 7 in Singapore... might make the end of the season with engine 9 afterall.
grrr. ...withOUT engine 9 afterall
On toast? You're doomed!
Paper boat!
http://twitpic.com/jxpkc
Question in the press conference from the floor:
What is the illness of Timo. Is it Kobayashi fever?
:-D
(The answer: I just won't answer. It is a stupid question and it doesn't deserve an answer.)
Pic says it happened!
Brilliant!
That looks like Ferrari data - have they got a new spy?
Toyota could easily create uncertainty in his seat, watch Timo panic then say, well we might consider you but as this weekend it is Japan and we want to be in our Parent company's good books so could you organize to step down so we can try Kobayashi.
I am pretty sure he will race this weekend.
Timo needs to, he has currently completed the most laps of all those who have been driving since the start of the season.
Yes. Wouldn't want to show Kobayashi up now would we.... Best to let him go on a high rather than in a smash.
I really really hope so ... did you see the slightly unflattering comment the team boss made are Toyota drivers...
"Q: So it could be a completely new driver line-up next year, then?
JH: Yes. We need to keep all our options open, and to be able to catch somebody if the opportunity comes, we need two seats available. We like Timo very much, he did a great job, but still we have a car that is more regularly of being on the podium and much closer to the top this year. We are not delivering, and there are things beyond the team and the chassis itself."
Yeah, and I strongly disagree with that. Trulli overqualifies the car, he always has - and Timo has shown he can be competitive. Give him a decent car and he'll show'em!
With no refueling next year, Timo will be a very good driver to have. He copes with heavy fuel and manages the tyres.
has trulli done that this year?
ahh, what cynical bunch :)
Nah, they just brought Timo to Tokyo and sat him in front of a Pachinco machine with 10 billion Yen and told him to go to town.
Overqualified? Not sure.
Bahrain?
Isn't it like 12-4 in Glock's favour?
Is overqualifying a good or bad thing? overdriving is normally bad...
scoble says google wave isn't all it's cracked up to be: http://scobleizer.com/2009/10/01/google-wave-crashes-on-beach-of-overhype/
"when I look at my Google Wave page I see dozens of people all typing to me in real time. I don’t know where to look and keeping up with this real time noise is less like email, which is like tennis (hit one ball at a time) and more like dodging a machine gun of tennis balls. Much more mentally challenging."
essentially, it's too real-time.
Is it just me that thinks it's ridiculous to limit gearboxes etc in the cars then allow them to run some in parallel in the factory. Surely that's way more wasteful than to let them use double the number in the car itself....
...you still want an invite though don't you :D
Yes, but this is Formula 1! Remember (I think) that it`s the gearbox casing that has the 4 race limit. They can rebuild (some?) of the internals and so some maintenance.
I have been saying this for ages - he manages his tyres and brakes well - I think he is awesome as a driver... but I am not picking up his salary.
oh yes!
Yes please!
Most people would respond to this by turning the real time typing off. Sounds like "scoble" hasnt been paying attention
possibly. i can see what he means without even trying it.
imagine etherpad with 1,200 follows. not fun.
Remember Scoble didn't like Facebook because it didn't let him have enough friends.
I think Scoble doesn't always represent the average user
My mind was being blown with 4 people. 1,200 would be cataclysmic
mostly i agree with a lot of what his says though. he hates twitter and loves friendfeed.
i'd officially never get anything done again.
If you have that many friends you should start a group!
I thought the point was that you had lots of different documents. You probably don't want everyone in one wave surely.
they didn't exist when he hit the limit.
Should I be using friendfeed? I get so very consfused.
I really dont like friendfeed at all, so if this guy doesnt like wave its a good sign for me :D
i love friendfeed. i despise twitter. you are free to choose ;)
Why should I be using FriendFeed?
:(
i use it because it supports the realtime web. it's not limited to measly 150 posts per hour. it doesn't crash daily and the developers are competent at what they do.
i use twitter because i have too.
What's wrong with twitter? Are the tweets you send actually from friendfeed?
Is it effective at spreading the word, like for blog posts?
christine and i have bitched about it for years? we used identi.ca because twitter was awful, and since then it's gotten worse.
sadly, more people are on twitter.
You don't seem to use twitter much these days - how come?
friendfeed? no.
waste of time for me then :(
i despise it. it's awful, limited and useless as a communication tool. i use it to talk to people not using doohickey (5live for example), and to plug stuff.
as i said. you're free to choose. i'm not trying to convince anyone else to use it.
i just said i agree with scoble that twitter sucks (and with him on many other things too).
other than plugging and commenting on other peoples' blogs, how does one get the word out?
Any reason its awfull and useless?
To be honest if somone tweeted me 150 times an hour i think i would drop them as quickly as possible.
Its given so much access to information as well, previously having to wait for news for 30 mins while someone typed it up for autosport, not we know immediately as if we have got a text alert.
It also let me ask Jackie Stewart a question which was great because i would never have e-mailed or txted in
Twitter is just free SMS - and I can use it to plug blog posts.
If friendfeed is no more effective then I can't be bothered. I find the feeds difficult to follow anyway.
google ads. we've been running an ad campaign for f1 minute most of the summer.
I think twitter has got better to be honest... It used to fail wale all the time. I can't remember the last time it went down a couple of weeks ago?
apple keynote, i think?
How much are they?
So yes it is better then. It used to crash. every. day.
whatever you choose. i think we're paying less than a pound a day. a penny per click maybe?
hehehehehehe: http://grandprixdiary.com/2009-grand-prix-drivers/a-picture-says-a-thousand-words
yup. at the expensive of full feeds. but i'm repeating myself now.
Hahaha, oh dear oh dear :D
I had full feeds off anyway. Too much information.
Twitter is stupid stupid :)
he must've dressed himself this morning.
It really is quite bewildering
i take back what i said. EJ is nothing to do with me.
The caption says it all. Pink shoes? Is he colour blind?
You MUST photoshop him as a drag queen!
?!!
did you see his cars?
What? You have responsibility for EJ? :|
no?
Come on - with his funky outfits he is almost there!
It's not just the shoes. The jeans fail to reach them and what's with Fidel Castro's hat?
By the way, have CVC made cut backs on Bernie's motorhome?
He was having a bad wig day?
the bright yellow jordan? it was... well bright.
hehe.
Water soluble wigs were not a good idea in hindsight
That caption seems a bit over the top...
Oh but I liked his F1 cars - some of the best liveries were Jordans!
Now how can you tell that he has a syrup?
I translated the page into Danish and it gets every word except the swearword.
I don't think there is a Danish equivalent actually...
Oh i almost fogot... further proof EJ created everything...
First slide at yesterdays talk... 7up Jordan
First thing he mentioned, building the cosworth engine which went in the jordan...
I forgot that EJ also invented 7up
And he invented green.
I thought it was a well-known fact. He's as bald as a snooker ball.
And the wheel
I never heard this before.
I missed out on trash talking Twitter? Boo.
Number one reason for hating it:
They provided us with full feeds and the choice. They decided they couldn't handle it, and only maybe 3% used the option. They ditched the option. I was part of that 3% and I am mad they took away the choice.
Twitter is mostly useless to me now, except for when I complain about things that I want to spare you guys.
Surprise surprise Williams will veto any proposal for a 14th team on the grid (Sorry Sauber Quadbike). They argue that one team is likely to drop out. So what is the point of the veto - is it just to make a point?
Google (other search engines are available) "eddie jordan wig" and you will see I am right and that he's not bothered that we all know about them.
What did you use that feature for? Were you really reading all of those conversations?
Not sure I follow (sorry). Is that the thing about @replies?
But half of us follow you, so we find out anyway.
Because if 28 cars are set in stone that leaves the FIA the option of reopening the entry list yet again (they've done it once, what was wrong with 12 teams?) or perhaps more importantly, if several teams drop out there is the possibility of 3 ferraris and 3 mclarens squeezing them out.
I used to use Twitter to find new people. So... potentially, you would talk to someone I had never heard of and, it looked like an interesting conversation, and I would find someone new to follow. Maybe a new blog, a new podcast. Lots of interesting stuff.
Now I can only use Twitter to talk to people I already talk to. Which is fine, because you are all lovely, but it is limited.
Yes.
That's fine. It's not a secret.
Indeed. Well he must be respected enough by the paddock if it's not something people make fun of...
That's true. Twitter is now even more useless to you. :-)
I'd understand if they stated that as their reason. But Williams said they vetoed it because it probably won't happen anyway. What's the sense in that?
just to add something, i know the question wasn't for me. check out our f1 friendfeed stream: http://friendfeed.com/sidepodcast-tweet-stream
top right: 527 subscribers.
i'm guessing a lot of people find the full stream feature useful.
Isnt it a bit of a privacy issue... i still dont know why they show @messages on your twitter page.
Because it's not a private network? It's a social network.
How do you know they don't ;)
and it has private direct messages for that purpose.
I meant in the public forum ;)
Maybe, but i think i prefer the way facebook does it in that respect
That's fine too. I have a whole different set of issues with Facebook.
Point is, Twitter used to be awesome and now it's just there.
How do I tell on that who is making the tweet?
Weirdly I could recognise one because it was to somebody I know who doesn't follow F1 so I'm guessing it was by fourstar!
No sense. It's not even a reason is it? So they must have a reason they're keeping quiet about.
hover over the "twitter" link.
exactly.
Hmmm. They didn't handle that well at all...
There has been no sense in any of the Williams decisions going against FOTA this year, has there?
Not at all.
In that case I did have to know the person he was talking to which is almost the opposite of Christine's point.
But I take her point that makes sense to me.
I wish that page you have there worked without the hover.
I can't blame them for not openly saying "we're worried Ferrari will insist on 3 cars"
Oooooooooh... A new video of Suzuka on the new F1 2009 Wii game (which is out 21st November!)
Confirming their entry when the other FOTA teams were holding out was sensible, they rightly pointed out that they had no choice as they were contracted to race until 2012
me too. at some point i'll figure a better way of doing it.
Are they paying you? :-)
oooh. good point.
It's like a videogame equivalent of Gavin/Alex's plugging :)
Hmm I am not so sure what was different about their contract than the other teams, but there was the KERS thing, the brake discs and the three cars...
Hey, as long as you guys aren't sick of it, I will plug my blog. You guys just tell me to stop when it gets too much ;)
plug away. new posts?
you rang ;)
I have one. It's about our friend Ari and the nasty Jean and his mate Max
http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/blog/index.php/827/fia-presidential-campaign-hotting-up/
If I remember correctly, Williams pointed out that they exist to race in F1, not to sell road cars. It makes perfect sense to me, as does the KERS and brake disc decisions. Williams haven't won a race for several years now and don't want to get left behind. This is their way of keeping themselves in the game.
Not since the Pizza conversation the other day. I wanted to write some kind of preview to Suzuka but computer and public wi-fi issues killed that one.
Apart from my usual stuff this weekend I intend to make a comparison of 2009 to previous years - one of my F1NGers mates sent me some interesting stats on wins per season...
Fair points I guess. Why aren't the other teams in support though?
ace.
Yeah - pretty good stuff as always ;)
Looks suprisingly good.
Quote: "F1 2009 on the Wii is an absolutely authentic recreation of the 2009 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP"
You can choose to play as FIA or FOTA?
Ta
Ooh I hope it has FIA/FOTA Insult Fighting
F1 meets Mortal Kombat :-)
Including Luca Badoer and Rob Smedley? :D
Luca Badoer defied the game's physics
Hehehe will the ING disappear in the middle of the season?
I was hoping they could improve on the stewarding. Oh well...
Luca Badoer was so difficult to model he crashed the game!
Ah, they mean it's impossible to overtake!
And nobody can figure out how to win?
There are options to gain places by lying to the stewards, instructing your team mate to crash or by cutting a secret deal with the FIA.
It dissapeared from their website fairly quickly!
Has it gone now? They seemed very slow last weekend. Were Ing happy to see "their" driver on the podium thanking Flavio?
There is a driver management mode where you put your drivers under pressure to make them crash, then fire them so they ruin you?
Now who would be stupid enough to use that mode?
Whoops got distracted... Here's a brand new blog post from me published right now just for all you lovely people... It's called: My muse is like Sharon Stone and its here: http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2009/10/my-muse-is-like-sharon-stone.html
Any predictions for who will win the Olympic bid?
I'm going to go with Rio.
Chicago.
I say Chicago but I want it to be Rio
When do they announce it?
Sometime today
6 PM BST, I think? Not sure.
In two hours I think. Haven't seen or heard anything and I work in Copenhagen...
2 and half hours I think - or rather that's when the meeting ends - so some time before then I guess
1453: The Madrid presentation finishes, meaning all four bidding cities have had their chance to persuade IOC members to give them their vote. Next up is a report by the IOC Evaluation Commission, giving their final assessment of each bid
I am amazed there is enough interesting info for a Beeb live blog.
There isn't - it has been very dull!
0915 "I am not just asking you to give us the Games as a Chicagoan or as an American, but also as a daughter. My father would have been so proud to see us here bidding for the Games," - Michelle Obama
Eh?
As I imagine it would be! I don't know why they're doing it.
Live blog link please. :D
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/8283061.stm
Thanks Christine. ;)
All sorts of fun and games happening over there.
That's what I thought
I reckon Madrid will get it. I'm not sure why. I'm certain it's not based on any actual knowledge....
Spain are trying to top the US's dead dad card with an almost dead ex-IOC President card
""I know that I am very near the end of my time. I am, as you know 89 years old. May I ask you to consider granting my country the honour and also the duty to organise the games in 2016." - Juan Antonio Samaranch
London 2012 will kill that bid, I think. Blog also says they struggled a bit in the Q&A. Samaranch's presence may give them a bit of a lift, though.
Pfft! Typical!
Brazil need to wheel out some orphaned children quick if they want to pull this off.
Mr C... Having just read Scoble's post on Wave I think my understanding of Wave was closer to the reality of wave than his was. He was saying it was being hyped as twitter killer, not to me it wasn't. To be honest all I saw origionally was the origional demo. What it was to me was a way to have a private doohicky with much more sharing going on. And I hoped to have a public option that could be accessed too and a place to keep those together.
The thing with twitter and friendfeed is that there isn't a topic so everything needs to be in one big bucket. Whereas in wave you'd have lots of smaller buckets. Who knows until we get our hands on it though.
And Japan is too near to Beijing, I guess.
Yup. Which is why Chicago and Rio are the favorites.
And Chicago isn't near anything, woohoo!
:D
You have to think what music the Beeb will start each show off with - it's down to 'And All That Jazz' or Duran Duran
In Jumper news I've had to take my jumper off as I am now too warm.
Indeed...
I like LewHam being a bit of a rebel: "We didn't do much running – we weren't supposed to be running this afternoon, but I couldn't help it: I just had to go out and have a little bit of fun!"
What about the hat?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-281
Phew!
It was close for a second. Taking the sweater off without taking the hat off was NOT simple ;)
Why do you even own a hat like that?? You live in London, I don't get why you'd buy souvenirs :P
It was to help identify the other version of me in this handy educational video which shows what the quickest way to get to Picadilly Circus from Leicester Square: http://goforodd.com/2009/09/challenge-1-the-race/
I needed be able to do the first run of the challenge without having to carry what was going to identify the alternative. And based on the camera angle a hat was going to be the best thing. And shops around there only sell souvenirs.... so... there it was. It isn't really a hat of course it's actually called the "Mind the Cap".
Oh my god. Mind the Cap? I think my mother missed her calling in life writing slogans like that.
hmm. that isn't what i'm picking up on. nor what i quoted.
as i see it, the issue is that it's too real-time. i don't need to see you write your comment here, or preview it, or post it. i just need to see the finished text.
either way, we'll have fun integrating wave with spc... if they ever let us,
You'll be able to run your own wave server, so you should be able to integrate it.
i really want some of that new renault gear.
agreed. i can see it replacing desktop doohickey.
i can also see myself getting nothing done for the next 2 years due to the amount of noise i'm bound to insist on tracking.
Just remember it might change before next season ;)
i want it now. how do it get it?
I think that's why it's so coveted....
http://my.renaultf1.com/img/media/cms_rf1/5/5/3/1/1355/3514.jpg
i need that top.
And you can turn that off easily.
I thought the problem was the noise of too much going on at the same time. I totally buy it as a problem. For example I use different applications for different things. But imagine I'm using Wave to collaborate on a work document and wave keeps telling me that lots of new comments are there on the doohicky. Even if I can't see the person typing it's still a distracting time suck.
To be clear, I'm not saying he's wrong, I'm just interested to see all the discussion. And because it's so open a thing I'm sure it will never be the same tool to two different people.
They are still selling ING branded gear on their site :)
so who knows.
Why don't you just ask your bff?
Good day at school, then find out Timo was ill and hearing about some awful rumours about football etc. So hi.
"can i have the shirt off of your back, ta"
he may not need it for long.
*runs*
If he was your bff, he would.
faster!!
hey sir.
this type of faster? :) http://fasterinside.com/
I can't see anything, not even on the official f1 store which has things for singapore still.
what in the world is that?
Some thing that Fernando is doing, I'm still not sure what it is about.
can't i just have a renault jacket?
Hey Mr C, did you know Google Wave invites are selling on eBay? :)
the jacket is probably better and cheaper :)
my guess is if they are going to sell them, they will be available after this race weekend
He's selling laxatives?
i did. as i'm banned from working on comments, there isn't a lot i can do with wave right now anyhow :)
:)
I do actually have one of the Faster shirts, it is though the only F1 realted thing I've bought all year.
Hehe. Who knew they were THAT important?
it happened with gmail, and people had email for years before that came out.
IOC meeting looks BORING. But it's interesting to see it for the first time.
Blimey. Who knew Google was THAT... oh no, wait... they are.
Chicago is OUT! WHOA!!!!!
Hehehe
Thats livened things up.
With Chicago out, I'm now rooting for Rio.
Do you know when they decide which sports get to go in or out?
Hasn't that been long decided?
I'm telling you, it's gonna be Madrid :P
They're in Round 3 - Tokyo is out.
That was just the shortlist wasnt it?
Not sure.
Its supposed to be at this meeting. I' more interested in that really. A cynical person might say the olympics look the same wherever they are held, so it doesn't really matter
I do wonder, though - does Obama's American luster not wear well with Euro-politicians?
Spain vs Brazil comes a year early. ;)
Election over - surely a win for Rio?
Could well be... but i think it might be a bit close to barcelona...
What's so special about Barcelona?
It knda makes sense.
Europeans voted for Madrid
Asians voted for Tokyo
South Americans Voted for Brazil]
Who voted for The US?
they had the 92 Olympics
1992 Olympic hosts.
Was a while ago now.
Exactly. But to be eliminated in Round 1? That's shocking.
Considering its every four years...
I think it was the geographic spread. Remember last time there were 3 euro cities and NYC and they still got knocked out first.
This time it was much harder as each region will have gone for its own.
That shouldn't automatically be true, but I guess that's what happened.
You're saying they can't repeat countries that often? Maybe that's why US is out then....
But now there's a real chance they'll do Europe for 2 Summer Games in a row, and 3 overall (with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia)
Heh Russia hardly counts as Europe though :P
I don't know really, I just suspect that its quite close together.
Maybe. It doesn't to me but it's outside my living memory so.....
Just remembered - there was this thought that Chicago would make it because Rio and Madrid are both Latin cities and would get votes from the same bloc. So much for that, then.
Its outside my life so... ;)
Shush you! I'm not that old....
The way the voting works though, rio could be way ahead of everyone in every round and we wouldnt know. madrid might just be best of the rest...
Hehe, and on that note, going to training so see yas again in a few hours.
Did we see this?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6247013/Cloud-graffiti-in-the-skies-above-New-York.html
Is it #MFC ? ;)
Just waiting for the 2016 Olympics results, then I'll be off to bed.
I believe that skywriting has been around for quite a while!
Here we go.
now I look again it is just skywriting. Why can't I tweet the plane and the tweet get written automatically?
Ah, now that is MFC.
And it's...
RIO!
Rio!
Yay!
Booooo!
You preferred Madrid?
Her name is Rio and she dances in the sun.
Exactly. :D
Tbh I don't have much of an opinion on the topic :P I'd picked one and I was sticking with it!
I love the olympics though. I can't work out if I want it at day or night time. Probably daytime.....
Rio means Olympics will be primetime there in 2016.
I'm confused. They're long days. If they're in any other time zone, loads of it has to be at night for me.
Most events are in the daytime. Some will be at night for US primetime, I guess.
And on that note, am off to bed. See ya tomorrow! Good night. :D
Rio. Cool.
*on the sand
:)
what was I thinking?
i'm half expecting you to produce an archived blog post from nowhere about amusing misheard lyrics.
don't let me down...
Does it not worry you how MFC you guys are when a lot of people don't even have the internet..... :P
i don't have time to worry, i'm too busy keeping up with mfc!
Is it something we should be worried about?
Ok, there's a distinct possibility that I'm asking a dumb question, but what does MFC mean?
I'm not sure. I think about it sometimes though. Sometimes there are a lot of merits in old solutions. Also developing too far puts people off taking small steps into technology. It swamps them.
MFC = http://mediafuturechange.com/
Our other project.
Ahh, thank you :)
there are. i agree.
however, if it wasn't for such developments, i'd be sat in a pub right now talking about f1 to four or five people. what are the chances those four people would be a wise as some of the people here?
Evening! Friday!!
evening crusoe.
It can do, but by the same token, developments can happen so that people end up using technology without even realising it. It works both ways, and it just happens that the bit that interests us is the exciting, cutting edge stuff.
:-)
D'you remember Pink (Alex) Lloyd from the Indy 500? The guy in the all-pink car? He's not raced since then but for the IndyCar finale he's changed teams and they are running the colours of the low-carb version of the drink, HER Energy. It also has a 5-digit entry no. because that's the text shortcode for a cancer charity he supports.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3647972&id=63247267358
(thanks to Allen Wedge for that - he's the guy who helped us out for Sonoma)
oh.my.
cheers allen... i think.
I really like how unique it is
unfortunate timing... but it reminds me of eddie's footwear.
You're looking for wise.... *leaves quietly* :P
It easy to get swamped, but you have to let the mad rush for New Stuff pass you by and just get what you want. Like with mobile phones, if you always waited for the latest and greatest you'd end up with nothing.
#ChocolateFutureChange
Just tried the caramel KitKat Chunky. I approve.
hehe. i mean, imagine sitting in a pub and listening to this conversation:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/09/29/sidepodradio-part-6-unless-im-very-much-mistaken/
I'm sorry, it's just not as good as the Peanut Butter one, if you want caramel you need Wispa Gold ;)
Before I do any kind of catching up.... how was FP1 and 2? I see it rained and we had a surprise driver change.
we went back to bed.
There was a paper boat sailed down the pit lane
ah. I recorded them, about to watch. I take it this means I'll be fastforwarding.
i watched the BBC replays just for the 5Live coverage :D
*friend plug* if any of you listen to cnet's Buzz Out Loud, a friend of mine is one of the guest hosts today (RandyDeluxe)
I do, I do! I am very far behind though. I will listen out for it in... a month or so :)
hehehe... BOL is one of the few I listen to immediately so I don't get behind (other ones being all sidepodcast stuff, of course!)
Tch, only a month?
I don't actually know how far behind I am. I usually catch up with shows all at once, and it'll be BOLs turn within a month.
I'll bear that in mind. It's one of my favourite tech podcasts. Tom, Molly, and Cooley are my favourite hosts.
I need to do that. Pesky F1 keeps having races though.
Evening all :P
eh-oh.
hey
Hi
I immediately though "telly tubbies" .. oh dear!
Quick question has anyone had a chance to listen to the Murray Walker and Stirling Moss talk I put on the drop. I didn't get a chance to listen back and I was wondering about the quality (for reference in case you didn't see my more detailed comment earlier the very beginning isn't good because Stirlings mic wasn't working. But once Murray starts talking you're in)
I've been pretty good with BOL lately...
BY the way, have we got an emergency panda thread? It's So Thrusday today!
You could always watch this
So yeah, my theory test is tomorrow :P
Just did a practice test online and got 48 out of 50. :) I'll be doing em all night just to keep sharp.
*Crashes in* While I'm good at saq's, they still kill ya.
Good luck!
I'm sure you'll be fine, tis not too difficult but good luck with it though. :)
You'll do good mate. Good luck anyways.
Thanks guys :)
Channel 4 at quarter to midnight is showing F1 Rocks Singapore Live. It can't still be going on a week later.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but UK Vodafone customers can sign up to receive free text alerts on F1 from now until the end of the season if you subscribe today. I know it's only 4 races but you get entered for a draw to tour the McLaren Technology Centre with Lewis and the subscription ends at the end of the season so they're not trying to get you to pay for next season if you forget to unsubscribe
Are you subscribed Janna? What sort of stuff do you get? I'm kinda wary as there's a big chance I won't be able to watch Brazil live and I'm back to spoiler avoiding....
I only subscribed today so I haven't has any alerts yet. The info is here I think you would definitely get spoilers
Appropriately after Kathi's comment on Aside with Joe Mike Doodson has a column out today. He is a Ted fan too.
http://www.grandprix.com/ft/ft21895.html
I found him on skypeThat is very unexpected and nice of him *angel smile*I'll be off now, hope to be up for FP3 but will probably only make qualifying, we shall see.
Bye!
Night!
Haha... does he read the comments? ...that was brilliant!
Evening!
God that thread gave me a fright.... I thought somehow it had got to free practice time!
I have pizza and Groslch. Quiet tonight?
I watched FP1 while following the comments of the time, shame it was so wet. I heard FP2 was worse, starting it now..
Channel 4 at quarter to midnight is showing F1 Rocks Singapore Live. It can’t still be going on a week later. {Comment #884}
If it was, the council would have arrested everyone still there for noise pollution...
Off for a run on the treadmill. In a bit, peeps.
Watching the rugby and doing a bit more for my blog.
Interesting observation - the MotoGP structure certainly seems to work, and there is an interesting choice of teams involved. I can't see it replacing F3, especially at Macau, but it could be a useful alternative. That said, it is Yet Another Junior Series. I'm going to have to blog about this.
http://fofachairmandiaries.blogspot.com/
Me new creation.
I'm still listening to these split-up tracks from 5.1 surround version of The Resistance in fascination.
I always get the worry that with more feeder series, we will either run out of drivers, or more worringly, run out of quality drivers. And the series will just end up basically being crash/mistake-fests?
I'd love to get like a real arty player for F1 minute, maybe round and black and white? Like 'vertigo' video, sort of. Dunno if that's possible.
I honestly think we passed that point a while ago.
Heh, fair enough. I believe we are at the tipping edge. Quantity ain't quality.
Will try to pop in for qualifying live commenting if I'm able to wake up. Guten lucken meine dame und herren.
A blog with no comments??
Right now we have lots of series with a few good drivers at the front of each, and a whole lot of field-fillers.
I'm loving the sleepy SPC!
I am immensely jealous of people who can play piano so well with such ease :(
Well, you could too, after ONLY decades of practicing!
I don't have decades of patience!
:D
Languages are like that too! I want to learn them all but it takes so much time :(
I'd love to learn to play properly. Maybe when I'm older
Exactly... it's annoying. I suppose wanting to play the piano then watching the sheer awesomeness that is Rachmaninov, Chopin, Lizst, Beethoven, etc isn't exactly helping in comparing their greatness to my plinky plonkyness :P
There's gotta be a shortcut somewhere to learn these things in an instant. Cmon technology, hurry up. #mfc ;)
Languages don't take that long. I'm just restircted to four hours of it every two weeks.
Zzzzzzz Zzzzzzz Is it free practice yet?
Guys,
I got bored on the train home so I wrote a quick preview for Japan and then forgot about it :(
So have a read and if you feel bold enough why not make a prediction ;)
In my experience, unless you move somewhere, it takes years.... I should really sort my German out but I'm scared I start forgetting my Italian again!
goooooood evening everyone :)
Okay, shall rephrase. Basic language...
Heya lou.
Just learnt that Dad was at a charity track day at Snetterton as senior instructor. Spent all day driving an Audi R8 V10, lapping 2 seconds off BTCC pace! :D
I learnt Danish for a year before moving here and it was next to useless. You have to live there and speak it to truly learn!
Oh haha no I'm not talking tourist phrases. I'm a bit of a languages nerd. I'm trying to get my Italian to the point where it's more or less fluent.
a friend of my mum lived in France for two years. she said after the first year she started to actually dream in french!! She's so lucky to have picked it up so quickly as she met people out there who had been in France for years and were still very poor at it.
yesterday*
Yeah, in total I've spent 7 years having regular lessons though. You'd hope it'd get drummed in after that long.... If I'd kept it up when I was leaving school, I'd be fluent now, I just gave up right at the wrong point.
evening
the truly lucky people are those that are brought up bilingual. A Hungarian friend of mine can speak both English and Hungarian fluently, and because of it is very very good at French and German. Such a lucky girl :( she also is amazing at music.. sometimes it's not fair ;)
Done!
I told you two weeks ago, Adrian Sutil will win.
Oh well reminded. I shall read it now....
Nick! Stop making meanie comments about my favourite German! :(
I said he could win!
Vettel is rub.... nah, I've been too harsh lately.
Yeah well, Timo is well sick.
No, seriously.
*Providing no overtaking is required :)
It's his car I tell you!!! :( :(
He can overtake. I'm sure of it!!
I know. Shame.
Get well soon Timo!
The last successful German won races in his early days without requiring overtaking.
I get the feeling it is going to be a Webber Weekend. He has the track experience and I think this track suits Red Bull beautifully.
Maybe... But he has decided to stay there for a few more years so it cant be that bad?
Anyone any good at poetry?
After reading it for my exam, I'm sick of the stuff.
Though if you want something on BBC news readers or a Hurricane, ask away.
oh dear .. was going to suggest an #F1haiku twitterthon .. see what 3 line poems about F1 we can come up with
Much as I love him, I don't think there's a better seat available for him at the moment. Their car seems worse than others for following closely to another. He needs to mature a bit before he'll get a top drive I think though.
Always up for that though. Haiku's are the last bit of poetry I've yet to throw out the window.
Oooh send them all to 5live.... See if you can get them read out in FP3
I'll have a crack. Bit rusty though. What is the structure now, as in syllable count per line? I've totally forgotten.
Don't tempt me :)
Heikki haiku
5 then 7 then 5
That is not a poem. It is barely a sentance!!! :P
Its the only bit of poetry I can pass out, so shush ;)
That's the point .. it's kinda silly but as Alison says .. we might get a shout on FP3 if we get some good ones
I never really got haiku. Never made sense to me
Tis just a bit of fun
You are on every session anyway
I'm sure they'd be well into their F1 poetry!!
Jackie's so good at getting questions read out because she asks good interesting and unique questions! :)
... but if you don't want to play that's fine
I had never heard of cake tins so I got properly educated with that one
I wanted to know about Cake Tins, and now know about Barney's ear.
Why thank you, :) it's been said I have a talent for asking weird questions (that no-one wants to know the answer to)
Hey, good evening everyone.
Everyone ok?
Hi Adie
Hi Adie, good here.
Did one, but it's nothing spectacular.
Good stuff.
I saw RG's but not yours .. maybe I don't follow you?
I do now!
maybe we shout tweet the #F1haiku to @fivelive
Depends. I think you shouldn't swamp them completely :P Although that could be funny.
Like Alison suggested
A few haikus:
Max leaves F.I.A. / Piquet tells on Flavio / F1 in crisis?
Freshen your C.V. / You are out of job Heikki / tag Sorry Amy
Bernie in paddock / Ari runs over Bernie / Ari a dead man?
130R Rocks / Suzuka an awesome track / Why go to Fuji
we couls start a craze
LOL :D
Got to be easier than starting a religion
I resemble that remark :D
Oh great not another one to keep track of...
God - Did I win the Euromillions tonight?
If not can it rollover to next week and I'll fund a SPC trip to Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Paddock Access included obviously...
LOL
whats 5 live's twitter account name?
You're asking the wrong person. It's Derren Brown who can help you.
I'm not here... but I've kind of done mine (but it's SPC based)
Lots of @sidepodcast | But more is coming if me | Only thinks of homepage
@5LiveF1
I'm gonna go get some quali food. Hopefully find something caffeinated keep me awake!
Cool :)
Don't give him money to play roulette with
how do you spell kobiashi?
Kobayashi
Kobayashi
Ta
how do you spell it?
Or a gun with blank bullets.
like the above .. was too lazy to check
:)
I T :)
I'm getting very intense urges to watch 24.... It costs so much to download though :(
By the time a DVD arrived, I'm sure the feeling would have passed!
Which season?
7 I've not seen it yet.
It depends on what series though. They went a bit rubbish, but the the last one was EPIC
It's the last one I want to watch. A season pass on itunes is £45 though!! I'm not sure it's that epic....
Have twittered @jakehumphreyf1 to tell him about the haiku
I'm only up to start of Season 4. I have the box set, but not the inclination to watch it yet
Don't waste your time with 24. Download the first two seasons of Mad Men. Trust me. It is dang good.
I like startledbunny's last tweet :D
Night everyone, see you in the morning for quali
I'm jealous! I wish I could watch it for the first time all over again....
night Lukeh
Bye lukeh
Night Lukeh.
Just listened to The Resistance, and I agree with your review on Exogenesis. My favourite bit of the album
Any bets on who's gonna crash (first?) in FP3? Someone's bound to. I'd laugh if they didn't get proper running and just had to guess at their setups.
Do tell more!
Lemon and Limey.
Kobayashi?
i miss all the fun going outside!
have just been caught up in a road block after a driver came down the wrong side of the dual-carriageway and hit another car. that's the second time it's happened to me in the past 3 months.
Yay!
Sounds like Germany
It's by the same creator of the Sopranos. It about a advertising agency in New York in the 1960's. Here is a link to the series: http://www.amctv.com/originals/madmen/
Cheers
Evening all, how was free practice? are they worth a watch?
Bad times... It's scary how easily it could be you they smash into! My uncle's barely walking again after a truck forgot what side of the road it was supposed to be on and plowed into their car.
Wet. Uneventful. You've missed the introduction of Kobayashi though!
Not really
Some people don't deserve a licence.
staying inside is obviously the most productive thing to do...:P
Maybe with the fast forward button, just for the origami. :)
Spoilsport marshal threw it away :(
Hrmmm
No sure. If you have trouble getting to sleep, the soft drums of the rain will help you along.
i heard about it this morning, was he as un spectacular as i'd imagine?
He was okay. Uneventful.... Not last though! So much depends on the track though. Whether you got onto it just as it was drying or you missed it and it rained again.
i agree.
what am i missing on the haiku front?
I blame that Saltire / It was all her own idea / Now I'm really hooked.
LOL sorry :)
Another one is on the same network. They have all 18 episodes of The Prisioner online, probably the best psychological drama made on TV during the 1960's. LINK: http://www.amctv.com/videos/the-prisoner-1960s-video/
hehe. glad she's keeping you entertained.
Any update on tomorrows weather?
I find myself browsing the Formula Palmer Audi website, just wanting to have a go. I'd never find £55k to run a season. But I can dream. :P
Could be worse, she could have started her own religion....
still damp according to NobleF1 tweet a couple of minutes ago
again!
Have been to Portmeirion, Proof
You need to start on something less sophisticated and learn to drive
:D
join the club
Which I thought was a haiku, but was disappointed when it wasn't :(
That was a brilliant series
Always the one to bring me back to reality, eh Steven? ;)
oh and dont even look at the testing price, it will make you cry
If you want my 65 Mustang with the blown engine, I'll make you a deal.
Funny, I was on the Radical one earlier doing the same! Being 6 foot 3 and 15 stone limits the fantasy racing career sadly.
Nascar it is then...
Yeah I found myself counting too
Thanking you.
Did anyone see the racing driver on Dragon's Den? Last year maybe. The cost to drive in some of the feeder series surprised me.
I don't think even my Dad's position at Palmer Sport would even aid me that much to be honest. Don't ask me why, I just don't.
really?
100k Formula Ford
150-200k FRenault
200k for F2 (best value series on the market if you ask me!)
600-750k British F3
1.5 million for GP2
It aint cheap
Wouldn't you miss turning right? ;)
He was doing Formula Ford which is stupidly expensive given how simple the cars are.
It's ridiculous to be fair.
It's not expensive at all, it's not a one make series so its actually quite good value for a series thats always developing
How about touring cars?
It's more than twice as expensive as FPA. Enough said, really.
He mentioned GP2 at something like 2million as well.
There's the Sonoma raceway and Watkins Glen for that...
Waitwaitwait, FPA is a one make centrally controlled series, theres no competition, they get bulk costs which brings it all down, FFord is still extremely good value.
The cars are massively simple compared to almost any other single seater.
I only saw the first series :-(
I know someone I can borrow them from though, just need to find time.
erk.. glad you weren't a few mins earlier
I think BBC2 showed Mad Men recently, I never got around to watching it.. I have just started watching the Sopranos though, if I hadn't been watching F1 practice recordings this evening I'd have watching that.
but its still one of the best training grounds for drivers, and you'd be surprised at the lap times compared to more powerful cars, FFords are incredibly quick given the car
But if you were on the way up to F1, you'd probably find the FPA/F2 route less expensive than doing it the traditional way of FFord, FBMW, F3 and GP2.
Is that the masculine of Eek?
The Dragons Den bit is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP7Llt3gv8k
I did a couple of Formula Ford races a long time ago.
Less expensive but winning in FPA is not going to get anyone noticed
My Dad raced Formula Fords back in the late 80s.
Of course, but they are less powerful, and like i said, its centrally controlled, so instead of buying...for example, 5 sets of tyres for a team, i'd buy 50 sets and get the prices a darn sight cheaper. its all about bulk discounts, thats why FPA is cheaper
You get a 50k prize to do the F2 championship, and winning that would be you noticed
FPA uses 11-12 year-old cars. If they don't know them by now they never will.
I was just about to post the exact same point about F2.
I believe so :-)
And utterly pointless, because you don't develop a relationship with a race engineer and the changes you can make are limited.
Jury is out on that.
It's the first year of hte championship, give it a break, in a few years it'll be good
Top 3 in F2 get superlicenses which is insanely stupid
why?
why?
Piquet?
I've not seen any of the races though. What coverage is there of the championship?
FPA started well, it funded a F3000 season for Justin Wilson as the prize for winning the title in what?? 1998/1999ish?
There are too many single seater junior series already, so I will give any new one a tough time. It might get drivers noticed by Williams because of their involvement, mainly it'll feed into GP2 or WSbR.
what does he have to do with F2?
Next they will be selling Superlicenses on the shelves of your local supermarket.
And on that, night all. Should be up for quali, but if you know me well, its 50/50
one day im going to do a podcast called "feeder series: debate" and it's going to be on the subject of if there are too many feeder series...and you my friend are going to be invited ;)
Night !!
night RG
I agree. F2 is too far down the ladder. If the cars were as fast and/or as technical as GP2 or WSbR I would agree with it... but a centrally-controlled, one engineer to many drivers, frankly slow-lapping series gets it? The drivers are not ready, save for Wickens and maybe one or two more.
tata
Night RG
Great! We talked a little about it earlier, I said I'm going to blog about it. I'll do so in the F1 off-season.
i'd agree that the top 3 shouldnt get it, only the winner. but what has the engineer got to do with it? the drivers have a new engineer every 3 (i think) races, so they have to develop a relationship quickly and means that one driver dosent get special treatment, i think its quite clever
Night RG
It's Max's pet project so he is throwing superlicenses at it. No-one should get an automatic superlicence for finishing 2nd or 3rd in a championship with no history and which no-one knows the standard of drivers it will attract
woop for the off season!
fair point.
i'd be inclined to agree too, only the winner should get one
Motor racing will end up like boxing with the best guys avoiding each other and all arriving on the door step of F1 having won a stack of championships but never raced against other top drivers
My understanding from when the series started (and I haven't followed it much since) is that there are handful of engineers for 26 drivers, so each one has four or five cars to look after. This is good enough to go straight into F1? The driver would be swamped in F1, wouldn't be able to handle it.
I agree.
I wonder if the superlicences attracted some competitors to the series?
As I said to RG earlier, this has already happened. Alonso, Kubica and Vettel took the World Series route and never raced against those who took the GP2/F3000 route.
that and the price
Look at when Senna was doing the junior formulae. In the UK there was FF1600, FF2000, F3 then F2. There were one or two others but no serious driver did them
it's all about money, there are other series because there are gaps in the market for them.
at that level, I should add. with everything so fractured now it is hard to work out if they raced each other earlier than that
The drivers won't learn the way they do in F3 though.
3 drivers per chief engineer, each car has the same mechanic for the entire season
Definitely
Look at the world series field Kubica beat. There is a decent driver on the grid
would you prefer less series with many really good drivers not getting through, or more series where the drivers arent as dictated by money?
What's GP3 all going to be about? I see Mark Webber has a team.
It's ANOTHER series to dilute the junior formulae, what's it going to be comparable too?
Formula Master
Weren't there also restrictions on what changes could be made? As Steven says, they won't learn as much as in F3. F3 for 15-20 years hasn't been about racing or racecraft, it has been all about learning to set up the car. Why go from F3 to F2? Purely for Max's carrot?
There should not be as many series as they are. Drivers should have to prove they deserve to move up rather than spending their career avoiding competition
No? you dont NEED to go to F2, if you've got 700k then its more likely you're going to be looking at GP2/Renault 3.5.
There are more series because there are more drivers, and because not everyone as 700k to burn
Even that confuses me now!
It's such a shame though. How does Mr and Mrs Ordinary fund their child through one of those formulae? How far do you need to get before someone reckons you have enough talent that they pay you? Is it only F1 that pays wages (most of the time....)
The engineers agree before a race a limited range for each set up parameter. If a driver wants to go outside that range he is not allowed to.
i agree, but how do you do that without making things about money?
exactly! it gets up to 100k for a season of decent level karting, let alone racing, if i've got 200k, im going to go for the series that i can afford.
That's where you're wrong though. We have lots of series with a couple of good drivers in each, some average ones in each, and some crap ones in each. Better to have the good ones in a couple of series, the average ones making up the field, and the crap ones go home.
There are not more drivers than in the 80s. Grids were huge then. The FF1600 championship regularly had 40 plus entries.
Rhod Gilbert is the new host of Buzzcoks
coool!
yeah, but my point is not everyone has the money to do F3
What a day, glad that's over!
Will end it with some Chilean Merlot and some care over keyboard spillages
How are we all?
but you could run your team from your garage back then. now adays teh teams are pre selected before a season for the bigger series
Bear in mind that a lot of these kids have been racing for 10 years before they race a car and karting is not cheap. They have to learn to raise sponsorship at a very early age.
i think fp2 ruined me.
I bought a yoghurt purely because it was called nom.
Put three together and you get nomnomnom*.
*but the photo hasn't appeared on the drop thus ruining the gag
Debating about feeder series.
Hi Bassano
and if they dont?
:( I accidentally slept through it. I'm so glad I did though.... It really wouldn't have been worth waking up for.
I feel a little weary today and I didn't even bother with that
In general or Jon's podcasts? ;)
It'll kill F.Master, which seems to be dying anyway. GP3 does have some quality teams in it, most with good links to GP2 teams. I'm not sure what effect it'll have on F3.
I'll agree Formula master was never really any good, they're bringing in the current generation of FRenault cars (that are being replaced this year with '10 spec cars) just to fill up the grids
In general.
That's true but anyone who does F2 then has to either go straight to F1 which is not going to happen often or go to GP2 or WSBR where they are going to have to spend a season learning what other drivers have learnt in F3
There are not more drivers... it is just that more have the money to advance and so end up buying seats in series they have no right to be in.
That's pathetic. Why do they bother spending so much money if they're pants!
Agreed, but i think you'll find that 99% of all the F2 drivers on the grid this year thought they could/can be champion either this year or next
You can't be a racing driver if you can't raise sponsorship.
because they dont think they are
Piquet.
and this is my point. if you are saying we shouldnt have F2/FPA etc etc, then you are putting money before ability, and for drivers who cant raise sponsorship that isnt right
They don't, and while F2 is a good place for those guys to go to get noticed, it isn't a good finishing school for F1 and so not worthy of granting superlicences to their drivers.
I think its worth giving one to the top driver, but not to the rest.
That was always the case though. There have always been people with money or able to blag money but without the driving ability.
The actual Big Picture is a little bit different today.
Perhaps we should do F1 through the medium of dance on our big pic tomorrow.
They want to get to F1.
Yeah I thought that was a bit odd..
Because they enjoy it. I wasn't particularly good but I had great fun doing it and however much money I could have got my hands on I would have wpent it on racing
Have you ever watched the X factor, where people step up to sing, and are rubbish, but their parents have raised their hopes to silly levels?
It's a bit like that.
That's my analogy
slash get into a full time racing career. i think Sports cars will soon become the overflow car park of GP2/WSR/F2
Who?
[googles]
Ahh, he's very Welsh. Seems funny though, good luck to him
If F2 was below F3 it would make sense but to have people getting superlicences for that championship is ridiculous.
Wow, Thats awesome!
Is there any video footage of this we can watch somewhere?
I thought they were having a different host every show.
Isn't it quite obvious when people are rubbish though? I'd have thought even an egotistic racing driver could notice they weren't as good as everyone else?
I don't think anyone should get an automatic superlicence for that champinship
dancer?
i say liuzzi/
no because you pay to get into the best teams and as you have a half decent ability and a great team you still get into the top 6/10, so you keep going and going and going
They should get an F1 test, not a superlicence.
Oh absolutely. Best commentary in the world is Martin Haven and Gareth Rees talking about the backfield in GP2 Asia...
That's depressing.
Lou has been a fan for a while and she posted a few links and lots of us became fans. He is really funny.
I've done quite a bit of karting - mostly arrive and drive. I was looking to do Club100 this year, as they do a class for heavier drivers (I'm 15st 5ish). One of the things that's always frustrated me is that whoever I raced against I would always end up in the top 4 of the grid and could lap within 2-3 hundreths of a second of people 3 stone lighter than me.
That's my excuse. I probably just need someone to tell me I'm rubbish :D
Do drivers have to do any theory tests? Because if they don't they should. In fact a 100 question exam, with a 90% minimum score :)
No. There was one of those crash videos for accidents at Oulton Park so I may be on that but that is all
There is also the phenomenon of people getting better. I am not saying everyone who is rubish for 2 years will be beating the people they perviously lost too 3 years after that. But people seem to assume that your ability is set and everyone improves at the same rate.
I just caught the end of an ad for it so you could be right
And as the talent thins out between multiple series, so the average driver rises up the grid making it look like he's good, when really he's pretty average.
Hmmm I don't think a century of practice could turn Luca Badoer into Michael Shumacher.
if you gave him enough testing then he'd get pretty close to the times i should think, problem is, if you gave Schumey the same testing he'd be miles ahead again
I need to introduce Lou to Bill Hicks, every stand up comedy fan should start their lessons listening to him
Did you race in any other series?
The guy who ran the racing school I went to was pretty good driver and one day we were testing and he had his new-ish FF2000 out for the first time. I asked his mechanic how he was doing and he said that he was a second off the pace. He told me that as soon as he came in he would say the engine was down on power because every time he was slow he blamed the engine.
for what reason?
the cars are faster, they are closer in terms of performance. you cant say they dont deserve one because they wont learn as much?
The whole world should listen to Bill Hicks.
He had so much material on George Bush senior, if they wrapped magnets round him he would've generated electricity with George W's antics
You absolutely can say that. And I don't think they are faster. At Valencia they were barely quicker than F.Master. I haven't checked since, I will do though as part of a thing I have planned.
Oh my gosh. Are you all wannabe F1 drivers? This is a side to SPC I had not previously considered....
No
I think I'll dig some of my Bill Hicks CD's out over the weekend. It's been a couple of years since I've listened to him.
I can only imagine what he's have to say about George W.
I have an extremely geeky knowledge about junior formulae, hense the podcast ;)
I only have time for one comment, and I've only just joined the conversation, but it looks to be like someone is taking a very long term view and setting up a whole bunch of GPx type championships to get rid of the Formulax championships so that one day, the FIA will have nothing. Can you say b-r-e-a-k-a-w-a-y?
Yes.
I'd be the best too so NEEEER!
They are being spoon fed. Their set up is massively limited so their input is much lower than F3. There is no history to say whether the people who race in that championship are any good or not.
I'm not! :)
and I used to until real life took my time away :-)
not me. am hopeless at karting.
still faster than sato though.
Hmm.
SPC outing to the Kart Track @ Thruxton in the closed season?
Journeyer suggested something similar, modelled on the MotoGP structure. I can see it working.
it's the first year! i'd agree that the top 3 shouldnt get a super licence, but it makes absolutely no difference because if they didnt earn one automatically and they were good enough for F1, then the teams would test them enough to earn one.
Heheh but you've tried?
Autosport International, like earlier lthis year
Karting's great fun
I'm a virtual wannabe F1 driver. The PK of the online racing world. :)
Alianora is organising a reeat of last year's Birmingham karting
There is a cross-community karting meet planned by Alianora on the weekend of the Autosport Show, near to the NEC after it closes for the day...
twice.
rubbish.
I'd be up for that :D
As in I like to spin, not crash to allow a teammate to win.
i reaaally wanna come, but i have a feeling i'll be going on a trade day, and even if i wasnt, i'd still be cutting it very close for time to get a train home
Heh this is a revelation to me! You all like driving, it's terrifying!
:D :D ;)
Lukeh's relentless pressure has worked, I am listening to The Resistance.
I was there last year for free, and I'd like to go again next year.
The problem is the level required for a superlicence has dropped massively as a result of this championship. Some of these guys with superlicences are going to do GP2 and finsh 20th in the championship. We will have the insane situation where 15 guys who beat him in the championship won't qualify for an F1 licence.
heheh :-)
Id rather be involved in the politics and strategy than driving ;)
Most motorsport fans like driving
Why do you think I want to drive to Spa rather than get the train?
[And the train has booze]
Correction, I was there this year. The Saturday.
It can't come as a surprise that people interested in racing want to try it.
Details of karting event
http://formula1home.com/forum/weblog_entry.php?e=830
i want to try it, but i know i'd be rubbish.
I want to drive from John O' Groats to Lands End. Or the opposite direction. If not possible, then the A1 Edinburgh to London.
I like driving my car as well. But it's a Fiat Panda. It toddles along very merrily.
i'm taking my ARDS this year, the prospect scares me greatly
I've been karting on an outdoor track, Clay Pigeon, that was fun. I'd think a indoor one would be a lot more slippery..
Driving on a racetrack or off road yes.
Driving on the road is not so much fun... In this country anyway
That's barely driving ;)
indoor is generally about how much speed you can carry through the corner whilst going sideways
Errr it just has never crossed my mind! It's obvious I'd be awful at it :P
I can imagine! I'd like to do that...
The track in Birmingham is incredibly slippy
Right, I'd love to stick around.
However, I have to go to sleep now if I stand any chance of getting up for qualli in the morning. Goodnight everyone.
Pat - Clay P is awesome. About 30 minutes (ish) from me.
Don't bully Alphonso!
Where does a Vauxhall Meriva rank in comparison? (btw it's a company car).
If there are folk in the South East that would be interestred then I'd be up for doing an outdoor karting event like Sandown Park or similar
Off season?
Have you tried doing on a playstation or computer?
You need to ask? :)
I only like driving in this country in the late evening in the summer. Hardly any traffic and still not that dark..
Id love to do that, how much does it cost?
Is that what you call it? :D
what??? :)
You may be a star. I have argued for years that the most talented driver in the world probably has never been in a car never mind on a track.
If you want to follow me around ....Sure :P
For my first ever outdoor karting experience i went on a drying track on slicks...it didnt go well. I was fine until the bottom hairpin which had drainage issues....
:(
*gets coat*
You were driving with a shotgun?
Ditto, or less!
NIght.
Errr no? Why would I?
I've always wanted to go karting with a paintball gun, that would be mega
And they wouldnt know because they have no money
potentially
That's fun too
Errm my car is named Alphonso.... I love it. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that it's slow :D
Sounds like a challenge to me
Who's setting up the wiki page?
They probably live in a country where car ownership is less than 1% of the population
...or called alphonso.
My Motorsport club will be doing lots of Karting events (that we'll probably be setting up) this year, so i'll give y'all a buzz when they're on
Any reason for the 'ph' rather than an 'f'?
Doesn't matter that it's slow. I had a selection of Metros (both Austin and Rover), and a Fiat Punto. I now know all about maintaining momentum to avoid braking, 'cos you really don't want to have to accelerate too often...
Whereabouts are you Jon?
Like the mango!
High Wycombe, but will do doing events all over the south-east
The Metro, worst car I ever owned. No question
[I didn't get it by choice]
Like driving economically? I can do that. This appeals to me :P
You've lost me, it's probably for the best
Ok, not too far then
I work at Heathrow so it's a bit further out from there for me
the heikki kovalainen approach.
We'll be going all over as High Wycombe dosent have its own track, but there are plenty around
It's a kind of mango. My car is named after my favourite fruit.... I think this may tell you all you need to know about why I'm not a racing driver :P
his performance suddenly makes sense
#sorryamy
Which one?
The Austin was like a kart.. actually they all were. Great for chucking around. The 1.4 litre version went like stink, power-to-weight ratio ;-)
I had one that told you that the fuel tank was a quarter full, then run out.
I didn't get that by choice either. company car, again.
Its good practice.
Also its worth doing just to learn the tracks. Its one thing to watch a corner on tv, but its much better when you know how it links up to the ones around it.
Watching Singapore was quite different for me as i havent had a chance to do it in a game and it makes less sense to me
I cant!!!
I just googled it
I never realised people named their cars after sub-types of fruit
Shouldn't have to be doing that for too much longer methinks
Well.. sort of. More about maintaining speed, adjusting throttle gradually instead of treating it like an on/off switch as BMW drivers seem to, knowing where to leave a gap instead of coming to a screeching halt and start all over again..
Because he's gonna be awesome and there'll be no need to insult him anymore?
it's ok, she likes shyman more. we're safe.
Some of us name other things too.
yes, that's exactly how it'll play out.
he is faster than fisi. the problem is, fisi's not his teammate anymore.
There is a lengthy story. I'm not sure I remember it all tbh, I was quite drunk.
1.0 Clubman. Was in the switchover period, called a Rover but before the K-series engine and - shock horror - 5 speed box. When they decided to rig the hydrogas suspension to the original Isigonis design at last [*facepalm]
I agree. Although I understood Silverstone better after actually being there.
Sadly not
A main summary being I love mango, I love my car.....
A 5 speed 1.0?? Madness!
that was nearly a haiku :)
No, I had the pre-K series 4 speeder
When they refreshed it into a proper Rover they gave it a 5 speed box
You'd like Vietnam then
One of the best desserts I've ever had [whilst lucid]
Mango with Coconut Sticky Rice
I want a holiday there now :(
Too hot!
No way!
Not humid, at all. Quite bearable
I'm going to get some sleep now.
I like how the conversation turned tonight from haikus, to what cars we own/owned (with a lot of stuff inbetween). It's why I like being here.
See you at Qualifying.
goodnight all!

Night
goodnight! congrats an another fab podcast by the way, i think this is my favourite one so far
See ya Bunny
Hi again everyone, its been a long time. I know its late but here's a quick update from bootneckland. Had some problems with the ticker, went to see cardiologist and he fixed it. all's cool there now then went on holiday with the kid's, camping for a week in cornwall, been there 2 days and some nice chap wrote my car off with me and the family in it. been for a spell in hospital and finally got back home. hope all the usual suspects are well, and it looks like there's some new faces to get to know. but hopefully now I can get back into the SPC groove. Whilst I was lying on my back eating hospital food I got Mrs Bootneck to start a blog for me, so if any of you wonderful sidepod people want any up dates regarding Williams F1 please check it out and leave some comments and let me know what and how I can improve it. Thanks Me and Mr C for the sidepod radio and all the podcast stuff you chuck out it really kept me going. Best wishes to all, and lets hope for a dry race this weekend, 130R is really best done dry and fast.
oh my!
glad you're better mate :(
Wow, you have been through the wringer, glad all is getting back on track
Blog link?
You see I'm out of practice with this computer thing.... here's the link to my blog, I forgot it last time. Cheers all.

Pat, are you still around?
That's terrible, glad you are ok.
Cool, I'm a Williams guy too. Will add to the Reader.
Absolutely!
yup
Am just looking into Spa tickets
Do you still want me to get yours [am happy to] or organise your own, citing our ref when you book?
good lord!
we gave you a bit of a plug here: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/10/01/daily-1st-october-2009/ but everyone who missed the link should check out your blog here: http://naturalbornracers.blogspot.com/ - always good to see new blogs appearing :)
really good to here from you sir ;)
Brilliant, God bless SPC, 2 of the 1st guys to answer are 2 of only about 5/6 I can remember from the meet up at the science museum. How you doing guys, good to hear from you, I'm trying to trawl through SPC and see whats been going on but it's been a while and takes a bit time to get up to speed, bear with me here guys.
And good to hear from you, me!
I'm happy to do either. If you get, when would you want the money back?
I'm just thinking in terms of a new flat I may be moving into in the next week or two, it may be a few weeks before the finances recharge...
That's cool, the cc bill has just arrived so will likely be a month before I need to pay. That will give the proper conversion rate so I can let you know when that arrives
I can flex a week or two whatever happens
Yeah thanks, I got you plug through Twitter. much appreciated. Hope Mr C's Ok and I've still got the photographic evidence that he exists should we ever need it.
Favoured options:
Eau Rouge Grandstand
Gold 3 - weekend - €385 (covered) Amy & I are happy with this
Gold 4 - weekend - €340 (non covered) Others my favour this or alt Covered area
I got him drunk
That makes him real in my book ;)
You want covered now?
Bugger, no. Sorry
I'll amend
Forget previous
Spa Grandstand
Gold 3 - weekend - €385 (covered)
Gold 4 - weekend - €340 (non covered) Myself, Amy, Alison & Jackie's (I think) preferred option
Sounds good to me if you don't mind doing it, just give me a holler a few days before you need it. I can do a bit of juggling around if I need to, have some in reserve. Thanks!
aha. so you admit it? i shall show mrs. c. this evidence in the morning.
busted ;)
I never denied it, I just never realised you were a lightweight ;)
You guys doing tickets for Spa for next year already or is this some other racing?
I also like this option. Potentially getting wet for a better view and save 45 euros. :-)
We need to discuss hotels soon.
i was dizzy on the high of meeting so many wonderful people.
You Sir, got away lightly
Will give Jackie, Amy & Alison some notice and book this weekend
What. Evah!
Cool, cheers.
trueeee story
Grand. I'm happy to buy my own tickets. Just let me know.
Road trip!

oh yes. and there's room for more...
I'll DM my ref # to you once I've booked
They're cheaper if you book sooner so why not :P
I'm toying with Melbourne next season. I think that might be gluttony though!
Amy been whispering in your ear?
I'm in and my Bro will be too, not sure about all this talk of hotels though, been going to GP's all over for years and the only way is camping. Shed loads of beer shed loads of racing dodgy bbq'd food and baby wipes, what more could you want.
ok... i have plane tickets to dubai, so i will be there when the abu dhabi race is on! :D
Step 2: car and race tickets!
At least it made it in there somewhere
Race tickets for Dubai 385 USD, and thats not the good stands.
