Heading into the weekend now, apparently it's David Beckham's birthday today. Good to know, hey, fact fans? Anyway, it seems to be a quiet time in F1 at the moment, as teams have a rest before Spain, and digest the budget cap information. Here are some of the things we're talking about at the moment:
- Coulthard can concentrate on his career as a broadcaster now, as Hartley has received the paperwork that will allow him to take on the third driver role at Red Bull. Hands up who's disappointed we didn't get to see DC back in the car if only for a short time?
- The Boston Big Picture (inspiration behind F1 Minute's daily big pic) had an F1 feature yesterday. 31 pictures take a trip back over the last few races and look at some stunning shots. It's good to see that we featured a couple in our big pic as well, meaning that our homage is working out perfectly.
- Finally, if you're craving some racing this weekend, Pat has written up a good guide to what you can look out for over the next couple of days. We're looking at A1GP, Touring Cars, and yes, NASCAR. Pat writes this up frequently, so it's always worth keeping an eye out if you're looking for more wheels to watch.
That'll do it for now. Let us know if you're up to anything exciting this weekend, and equally, let us know if you're up to anything not exciting. Yesterday's daily post saw comments about custard, so it's fair to say that anything goes. I'll see you in the comments.
Oh my god did I just see a football fact in the post?
Like I give a care about him. So what times qualifying today?
The key question here is... does David Beckham know it's David Beckham's birthday? :P
That Big Picture is amazng, absolutely love those photos.
Thanking you for the linkage :-)
on the subject of the boston big picture. we have to say a huge thank you to them, for their related links section which currently lists f1 minute big pic.
and while i'm on the subject of thanking people (and while christine is sleeping), yesterdays sidepodconversation was really enjoyable. i learnt, it was funny, and i didn't want it to stop :)
thanks all.
The one about custard?
That's brilliant. :)
yeah!
When you join in late it can be very confusing...
also true. we need regular an allen-esque recaps.
Is that another podcast thingy?
hehe. nah, i just meant the conversation in the comments.
Okey. After 4 months I'm still trying to work out SPC
after 2 and a bit years... me also :)
yell if we get to cliquey though. it's easily done.
It can take a while but it's worth it. It's like trying to predict when the comments will be busy and when they will be quiet. Tonight it just stopped when it looked like it would go on for hours and the flow can start up just as quickly.
Thanks. I don't think I have been so immersed in F1 in all these 34 years watching.
That is something we need to watch. I have seen that happen on a few sites. I think it is unlikely here because none of us take ourselves too seriously but when a group spends so much time together it can leave others feeling left out. If any of us say anything that you don't understand or sounds like an in joke make sure we explain it.
Actually, and I think I posted this yesterday, SPC is the friendliest community i.ve seen in a while.
agreed.
and there was a slight danger of that happening after the meetup, when the people in the pub knew stuff others didn't. hopefully we covered everything upon returning, but i can see how it can be confusing.
That's good. I would hate for it to sound like a bunch of us having fun that people feel they are outside.
Well I guess F1 is the common factor. People I know think I'm a nut staying up all hours to watch it.
given how f1 has traditionally treated its fans. there's an argument to say the people you know are right ;)
Well that's true. The more I read about next year, the more I worry. I hope we aren't approaching another FISA/FOCA type war
there's some good ideas and some bad ones. i do get the impression though that everything is wrapped up in a big ball of panic.
on the flip-side, red bull now have a 9 month head start to make a video explaining all the changes :)
True enough!
I have been watching someolder 80s/90s races (without refuelling) and man, some were Boooorrring. Cars got so far in front, it was over by lap20. Now, I'm not starting this all up again, but you would think "those in charge" would have some sense of history. Oh well.....
A lot of 'fuel strategy' races have been boring. There will always be boring races.
my memory isn't good enough to recall. i do know martin brundle sometimes considered it boring as a driver.
Yep, fair enough, we'll wait and see.
Maaybe the idea is to throw huge changes at the teams EVERY year. That will spice things up ;-0
A lot of them were boring. There is no doubt about that. The problem though was not fuel though but aerodynamics. We need to have cars that are not so sensitive to aero. If you look at the late 60s and early to mid 70s beforeaero became all there were fabulous races with no planned pit stops. Jackie Stewart talks about one race at Silverstone where he and Jochen Rindt swapped the lead 30 times with similar battles all through the field.
I've been thinking about this and I just don't know what could be done. Aero has been such a part of racing over the past 40 years. Short of banning wings...
But then, is that F1 still? We can't go backwards.
Maybe wide track, huge tyres, very small wings.
Oval-spec IndyCars?
Yeah kinda. Doesn't sound too attractive does it.
Anyway it's such a lovely Saturday morning outside i better go enjoy it.
And I'm going to bed :-)
Gilles Villeneuve reckoned that the answer wa to rip the wings off an throw them away fit a big normally aspirated engine and big wide slicks.
Getting rid of wings is never going to be popular with the teams because sponsors like wings. They could simply run something like Indianapolis wings and take the end plates off to make them totally inefficient. For me an F1 car should have more mechanical grip than aero grip.
Good night/morning
bye chaps.
to that extent i almost agree. but banning refuelling before aero gets "fixed" (and the changes have proven to be successful), sounds like commercial suicide to me.
The problem is that so long as we have the pit stop strategy formula there is nothing pushing the powers that be to make the change. They need to remove the crutch of pit stops to highlight the problem so that they will tackle it.
that's assuming they can join the dots. as we saw with the solo year of no tyre changes, the rules were rolled back a year later.
if refuelling is banned in 2010 (and stays banned up to the season start). the races will likely be dull and thus in 2011 refuelling will return.
That is a possibility but it is worth the risk. It would be harder for them to justify bringing back re-fuelling than it was to bring back tyre changes.
not entirely convinced. cars still need fuel. all you're removing are the race rigs.
anyhow, much to consider, but i gotta sleeps. g'night buddy.
Good night
Exactly right Pauli and same for me. It's hard enough finding other F1 obsessed people to chat to, let alone highly intelligent, friendly people.
As usual, I agree with you Steven.
Was there an F1 Debrief podcast for Bahrain and I missed it ?
The thing with driving any kind of race car, is that you get used to the speed. That's why you hear people like Kimi saying a race was boring even when he wins. You need variety and that's what racing others is all about. (Rallying is one of the best forms of racing).
Mr C. was ill so it was cancelled.
My memory isn't very good, but I remember races where someone (Mansell?) would come in with 10 laps to go and put on qualifying slicks, turn up the boost and be 4 seconds a lap quicker than anyone else. I think this is the thinking behind the current tyre regs.
There will be a Debrief and a sidepodpanel recorded live on Sunday starting about 7pm UK time.
The idea is definitely to have people being fast at different times. Before when there were no fuel or tyre stops some drivers would attack early and defend a lead and others would look after their tyres and engine early on and be faster at the end.
Martin Brundle observed that back when cars started with a full race-worth of fuel, it felt like the car was pulling a caravan. Mosley argued it will encourage better fuel economy but F1 should be about speed, not economy. I love the sight of all those team-members turning around the car in the pits in that flurry of coordination. Stops in IRL and NASCAR look stone-age in comparison. Anyone new to F1 has to be amazed to watch a car re-fueled and tyres changed in seven seconds, maybe a bit longer if the nose needs changing.
What will happen in qualification? Presumably, having drivers do Q3 with the fuel-levels they start the race with will be pointless because they will all need the same high level of fuel. Will it return to the old days of the out-right fastest they can do on low fuel? It would be too awful if we get more boring races because of the re-fueling ban and Q3 with cars bloated with a race-worth of fuel.
I admire your optimism that FIA have the first idea of what they are playing at - did they not re-introduce re-fuelling to spice up the racing? I do remember the Senna-Prost clashes when Senna would put distance on Prost but have to stop for tyres and chase after Prost.
Do you think one positive change might be we see the return of the two-stop verses three stop strategies? With the two-compound rule, teams have to three-stop to keep the distance on the wrong tyre as short as practical but with no fuel-advantage to stopping, they might try to run long into the race with one set and then onto the option tyres for the rest? Or perhaps switch very late in the race after two legs on the best tyres to the less good tyres?
I would be in favour of Bridgestone bringing all four compounds to all races and letting teams use whatever they like, even being allowed to mix the compounds on the car at any one time. Surely, that would generate a mix of strategies that would have people interested in tyre-strategy which was the point of the two-compound rule.
I would also abolish intermediates. They were introduced to help win the tyre-war with Michelin. With the war over, the gap between slicks and wets in inbetween conditions would spice up the racing. Plus a set of tyres that could only be used in the first 25 minutes of FP1.
hooray my first BAT podium!
F1 video from Bahrain is up - too much daddyham for me!
Morning all. Seems like a nice day out there. We might actually go outside.
nice day here too, just came back fro beach BBQ to play with my new MacBook
Morning all. Tis a beautiful day which is a complete change from a the buckets of rain yesterday. Though I think my troublesome groin is playing up again.
Oooh, new MacBook. Mr C will be impressed :)
That must be too much information even for Sidepodcast.
Groin muscle, recurring injury.
"Oooh, new MacBook. Mr C will be impressed"
I am impressed myself :-)
Morning all,
I'm not disappointed about Coulthard because Hartley is one step closer to becoming the first Kiwi F1 driver in nearly 30 years!
He just needs a haircut. God I'm old!
:D
BMW continue to score points, so I'm happy :)
Finally! Had Home Hub connection problems all morning, and only just got them resolved. Excuse me here but BT are s***, aren't they. I know, I know, you told me so.
So yeah, morning everyone ;)
A1GP live timing (free practice 3 on now):
http://a1gp.alkamelsystems.com/LiveTiming.html
Have to say I haven't had a lot of problems with BT :P
Oh great, that's all I need. I retire after 5 laps in BAT and my teammate who's hardly been around only goes and wins the flippin' race! Unbelieveable...
We're seriously considering switching to Virgin.
DON'T DO IT!
I just remember that BT offered us what we currently had at a cheaper price. Once we told them we already had that, they were like "Oh...we have no record of this". Resulted in us getting our package for a bit cheaper because BT's records were incorrect. :D
Cheers for the heads up Jeremy
Why? Our experiences with BT have been crap. Surely Virgin can't be worse, is it?
Dom, oh Dom how can you finish so close to second and then have it taken away so cruelly.
I like the live telemetry part, would be great to have that for quali in F1.
Yes. I wouldn't tough Virgin with a hugely long barge pole...
Look at other ADSL providers rather than going for Virgin. Eclipse, Be There...
Can't deny it, 19th to 1st is one hell of a drive.
Personally, I don't feel he deserves it.
Why? because he's missed setting up the car a couple of times. I've done that when I haven't been able to get on because of Uni. However so far I am yet to win a race in the SPC games.
At the end of the day it's like Alonso's win in Singapore last year, lucky.
Well said mate, he did the effort and got the reward in this race.
But that's not the point. He's not been around and to me it just seems a cheek that he just comes in without letting me know where he's been or anything and wins the race out of the blue, while the game makes me suffer after just 5 laps. He's not in a championship winning position. I am.
Scott, you can't say who does and doesn't deserve anything. Its a game and a bit of fun. If it means that we're going to start picking on people for the results then we're going to have to call it quits on Sidepodcast Batracer.
But that's BatRacer, it's reflecting real life as things can't always go the way you want or need them to.
He made up 14 places within the first 7 laps, before pitting on lap 9 putting on the soft slicks as the weather changed to greasy a lap later which is perfect timing and put him in a great posistion.
Mosley is changing his tune.
Now Ron is gone is he changing his target?
F1 could survive without Ferrari
Something going on behind the scenes?
It can, but in truth F1 just wouldn't be the same, to me at least, without the Ferrari as the sport would be losing its most successful team.
Arrrrgh! Still no podiums!
Toyota will now be competing for wins... it's way overdue... :P
My inability to type properly strikes again. This is how it should have gone:
It can, but in truth F1 just wouldn’t be the same, to me at least, without Ferrari in F1 the sport would be losing its most successful team.
Apparently that was my first retirement of the season. Only Flibster has finished every race now...
Not necesarilly in a good position though. Did a risky strategy though - planned pitstop on lap 44. Didnt work though.
Started 10th - finished 15th
Mum just bought tickets to go see Lee Mack in December at Norwich Playhouse! :D
I'm pondering going down the street to buy a magnum, although I am in my pjs and getting dressed would be an effort.
NASCAR ? But NASCAR does not have any sidepods on it, Nor is Franck driving in the series in any way. Like how much free time do you guys get anyway?
.
How is this? Today I have planned a 20 km hike in the woods with 8 other people who have all forgotten what the 80's horror movies taught them about going out into the woods?
Do you live near a university that teaches medicine? It seems the trend of adults going out in pyjamas is spreading. PJs are not scrubs people! :-(
PS. Zoe and I have one Almond Magnum left in the freezer. Sydney is a long way to travel, but you're welcome to it :P
It's from the 90's... but I just can't resist..
There are certain RULES that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie.
For instance, number one: you can never have sex. BIG NO NO! BIG NO NO! Sex equals death, okay?
Number two: you can never drink or do drugs. The sin factor! It's a sin. It's an extension of number one.
And number three: never, ever, ever under any circumstances say, "I'll be right back." Because you won't be back.
sadly I grew up in a University town and have seen more of my fair share of people at the supermarket in pyjamas, and now I live a few blocks from Melbourne Uni, although it doesn't seem as widespread here. I've got proper clothes on now in anticipation, but I'm quite enjoying Federer v Djokovic at the moment.
#1) Great. That's me off'ed before the opening credits....
#2) Even better. Now I did not make it past the editing room phase...
#3) But what if I use an Austrian accent?
i have returned, with a columbia aroma magnum. I haven't tried these before but surely coffee + chocolate is a no fail situation?
No, it is not a no-fail situtation, and do not call me shirley....
Chocolate-covered coffee beans prove this to be true.
That should protect you :)
A1 GP is on sky 1 ... nowish
Correct me if I'm wrong here but A1 gp is fun by Ferrari. All the cars have KERS too, so surely Ferrari should have some bloody kers experience?
(Crap intro though, reminds me of itv's f1 intro)
They don't have KERS. They have a PowerBoost button which just kicks up the revs for a bit, but there's no energy recovery going on.
Well, it is off to "The Woods of the Chainsaw-Using, Hockey-Goalie Mask wearing serial Killer"......
Charming Place. And to think I was offerred the chance to visit the in-laws instead...
Have fun :-)
why is it raining in Rome, whyyyyy
Must have swapped the weather with Britain
"They don’t have KERS. They have a PowerBoost button which just kicks up the revs for a bit, but there’s no energy recovery going on."
Ah like what brawn did in Bahrain to keep the engine cooler than usual.
No, that just increases the revs. A1GP's is more like a nitrous system.
One mans loss is another mans gain :)
Im now 6th in the WDC - Lukeh you're goin down!
Thats your opinion and I can see where you're coming from, but I dont think its up to us to say its deserved or not.
In the 2008 season I won at least one race by overtaking Al after a safety car re-start a few laps before the finish. Is that any more deserved?
The simple fact is he won that particular race, so we should congratulate him as well as anyone else who did well, sympathise with the unlucky ones, and then move on.
R.G - do you have someone in your family called Neil who has STCC - The Game?
i have returned, with a columbia aroma magnum. I haven’t tried these before but surely coffee + chocolate is a no fail situation?
I wonder if thats Kimi's choice (TM) :P
I have someone called Neil, but he lives in Greece and have no idea if he has that game or not. Or if he likes racing or not
Ah right, just wondered because on Race Department, there's a Neil Gault entered into the RDTCC.
I thought all the teams just wanted the technical rules to be the same for everyone regardless of budget. Joe Saward has links to the letters on his blog.
Here we go. Everyone on track with under 2 minutes to go. :D
It's probably not him, he's from Scotland.
(Do you mind not sharing my surname to the world ;))
Dunno. There is oddly enough a few G****'s non related I know
My god am I stupid. Can someone who can remove my name from that please.
Erm, why say not to share it when you've clearly just written it there? :D
Thats the A1GP qualifying record broken by 2 seconds!
Thats the speed difference between the Ferrari chassis and the Lola chassis
I'm stupid. I like my privacy, ie only sharing my name to those i trust
it's a shame this is probably the end for A1GP, I quite liked watching it in NZ, haven't seen a race since I moved to Aus though.
I've figured out why A1 gp isn't very popular. It's like racing diesel indycars on 2nd rate F1 circuits.
Alan van der Merwe not doing as well as I was expecting. :(
Have done so.
Yeah, unless they can get some new backers
Thank you Mrs C
It's because they are running modified Ferrari F430 roadcar engines rather than proper screaming race engines. The chassis is good though.
Most of the circuits are good though. Brands is good, Kalyami is great...
I really enjoy it - it is a little ameteur, but I like the idea of the Motorsport World Cup, it's certainly got a lot better over the last couple of years than it was in season 1.
Yay - Alan Jones! :D
I like the idea too, theres not a lot of chance to back NZ in motorsport these days. I could try Scott Dixon, but IRL does nothing for me :)
A1GP could have worked if they made it an endurance open wheel cup because I honestly can't remember there ever being a race like it.
The chassis is a little bit more 'fun' than the GP2 chassis
Remaining 14 drivers on track with 2 mintes to go...
It's a development of the F2004 F1 car iirc.
Endurance race? As in 4 hour races?
I almost feel dirty for saying this but...
Come on Ireland!
"Endurance race? As in 4 hour races?"
I was thinking more like 12 hours, 6 during winter races.
That's made me think - why are there never endurance races for single seaters?
the rumours are linking Carroll with Lola aren't they?
Team GB.... 13th....Great...
Why don't we have Oliver Jarvis in the car? He was impressive.
Or even get Darren Manning back in.
Who is driving?
It would never work.
Manning is away for the same reason Marco Andretti is: Indy 500 practice starts 3 days after the A1 race
You'd never know unless it was tried at least once.
In fact it would only work if you went back to when it did work - when there was no downforce and no g-loads
Who would watch them? Le Mans and Sebring are special - imagine a 12 hour race every 3 weeks...
Even 4 hour races are rarely broadcast.
GT cars have space in them for easy adjustments, most commonly a 'booster seat' for the shorter drivers.
Single seaters are as tightly packaged as possible.
Daniel Clarke...
Errrrr...
They also take a lot more out of a driver.
The LM prototypes have a lot of downforce, almost F1 levels, but are designed for driver usability. Well, the winning ones are..
Ah. Oh dear. :-)
Single-seaters take more out, not GTs, sorry that wasn't clear..
Developers would easily create more hardy open wheel cars, I understand you would need 3 or 4 drivers per car.
Liuzzi does a 540° :D
Sure, I mean creating a single seater for endurance racing wouldn't be that hard, would it?
I'll google him ;)
Basically a less than special British driver who drove for Minardi in Champ Car.
hoorah, rain in rome has stopped
Single Seaters are so tightly packaged that it can be quite complicated to cange components.
GT cars are able to have entire hub and suspension units removed in effectively a single piece for ease of replacement. Nothing would be able to be mounted to any other major component - suspension coulgn't be on the gearbox etc...
The closest you can get to single seaters is the open top prototype class.
Yeah. Likes to be called Speedy Dan, but earned the nickname Crazy Dan.
Yep and look at shape of the Peugeot 908's body. That's a Formula car with sportscar racing stuff added to it: a wide cockpit, a roof and closed wheels.
Just think of who they could have got...
Coulthard isn't doing anything at the moment. ;)
McNish?
di Resta maybe or conway
Oh dear....
11th in Q3 (1st Qualifying for feature race)
not conway, he's in the irl isn't he
What about Ant? He's not doing anything either...
Yup.
Hamilton's taking a holiday... ;)
"How hard could it be?"
on a secondary note, does anybody understand these qualifying sessions? Nobody has been eliminated so it's not like F1, I know there are 2 races feature + sprint... but there has been 3 quali sessions so which ones are important?
i'm following it solely through the live timing, and even that is confusing me.
All of them are important.
1 fast lap per qualifying session.
Q1 and Q2 are for the sprint race - fastest lap gets pole
Q3 and Q4 are for the feature race - fastest lap gets pole
They have 1 powerboost they can use during any qualifying session - but it lasts for the entire lap.
If they save any new tyres from the practice sessions they can use them in qualifying as well
If a session is red flagged - it is cancelled. So if you don't set a time in that session - your loss.
Am now wearing the Palmer Sport cap my dad got from his assessment yesterday. He got two and gave one to me. Apparently, you can't buy these :D
Switzerland in the gravel! :D
Championship leader fluffs his Qualifying lap!
Ireland pole.
Double Pole for Ireland!
All they need is 2 points more than Switzerland to get the title.
Swtzerland will start 4th in the feature race.
Team GBR - 14th...
Ireland and Monaco on the front row. Interesting.
What happened to Liuzzi? 18th?
Moinaco have been improving. Pole a while back, they appear to be becoming consistant now.
China up in 8th though. They would be worth watching.
Liuzzi - 18th - bit of a step down from Pole
it amuses me that Monaco even have a team :D
Dude! I so hope your Dad gets the job and then gets you into a car ASAP. Remember us when you're famous! :P
Hehehe, thanks. I dunno about being a racing driver but I'll have a go in those cars for sure :D
For sure?
Racing driver.
They do have a lot of drivers to choose from. ;)
Well, I can dream... :D
Poor Nico must be the most confused driver of them all, I was reading an old article today from when he raced as a Finn.
If it is even a remote option, you HAVE to go for it. Even if you don't make it to the top, what a great industry! Life is all about contacts - don't waste this potential opportunity. Warren Luff (from Australia) is a great example - his Dad runs a driver training centre.
I know him from when he raced with Ambrose at Bathurst.
2 races to go - 3 possible championship winners.
Portugal
Ireland
Switzerland
Given how good Ireland have been over the last few races, you've got to look at them being the favourite. Switzerland Have Jani rdriving for them - most successfull A1GP driver ever. Portugal are the underdog here.
And I didn't say I'd definately be having a go in their cars. I did hint it to my dad though once I got my licence. ;)
See! Racing is in your blood. Do it! If you ever doubt yourself and need motivating, I'll be here. In the words or someone I know that's quite successful "you've got to back yourself"
Not sure if this was posted during the week, Jake Humphrey was asked in his blog comments to take some pics during race day. So he did!
Thanks :)
hey all,
For anyone who has been wondering about Jules like me, i've just seen this post from her on Jenson's forum.
nice to know shes still working for him, although I'm not sure how much "personal assisting" you can do when you're nowhere near him! :D
oh and for any jenson fans he has a new video on his site
It's After Midnight here, and unlike JJ Cale (awesome stuff, have a listen), I won't be letting it all hang out. I'm off to bed!
Tomorrow will be a good day. I have a Magnum in the freezer, V8 Supercars on the TV and Sidepodcast community to chat to.
See you later, Alligator!
Ooh, that's good news... and a little bit odd...
Scott,
Some of us are unable to commit to BATracer as much as you can. It's just a bit of fun really though isn't it?
I must confess when I knew that I might miss races in the 1986 campaign I decided against being your team mate because I feared that this might happen :(
Don't be the Alonso of BATracer!
No it isn't - it's bloody nice.
But shouldn't a 'Colombia aroma' ice cream be dusted with a fine white powder?
Source?
The engine is a tractor engine, I'm sure of it. It's possibly the most un-Ferrari engine I have ever heard!
Try it again, it's better this year!
Of course, that's just me sometimes getting a bit serious and competitive.
What annoys me about it though is not the fact he misses a few sessions. It's that he doesn't even tell me that he can't make them. If he has a valid excuse then fair enough. But if not then that's what my gripe was about.
Because driver changes would be difficult?
I didn't say it was a nitrous system. But extra revs and more horsepower are two different things in my book. I said it was more like a nitrous system because it provides more horsepower for a short space of time.
Ah. I think it's something to do with a combination of extra revs and a different fuel map or something. I'm not sure though...
It's called 'unforeseen circumstances' :)
For sure, I understand that. But it would been decent of him to show come common courtesy and let me know about it. :)
Relatives here, shall see you in a while
Laters, R.G
Say hello to the G**** family for us? ;)
2009-spec Roger Federer is breaking my heart!
I've just come on my break from work, and i'd thought I'd have a look and see what's going on. What do I find? A guy I respect dissing me because I've got lucky once. Fair enough, I've been unable to dedicate as much time as I'd like to Batracer and have had to leave without letting you know beforehand. That doesn't mean you have to be like this. I've got to go back to work now, so I can't read any replies before 7:30. I also want to say sorry to Mr and Mrs C if I end up extending the argument
uh-oh. Any chance you guys could take this elsewhere?
Chris - no need to apologise. It's clear that the Batracer fun has run it's course. I think this should be the last SPC game.
I think everyone just needs to calm down, shouldn't take what happens on BatRacer so serriously. I say that and I'm involved in 10 different games right now.
Query - how many people are in the current Batracer game? 10, 15, 20? I ask because if two people are going to have an argument I don't think they should spoil it for that many others.
Would be shame if it was, I got into BatRacer because of the last SPC game. That and the partnership of myself and Al seems to work quite well :P
IMO we aren't at that stage... yet.. I vote we should calm them down first.
Can I distract you with cute pictures of kittens?
how cute is cute?
In other news, I finally got my RSS reader to under 100 articles :-)
Agreed, and I'll take this opportunity to apologise for my comments this morning. :)
We have a full grid of 20.
As far as i Iunderstand there are messageboards etc on the Batracer game itself? I can see it continuing over there if enough people want to.
I see your point that it is a minority in this case, but to be fair, Batracer has been a constant source of angst for SPC since it was first mentioned.
Like, 12 weeks old cute?
If there are message boards for an individual league then yes, this should be discussed there...
Either that or we confine all talk to a thread on the Wiki?
do it!
The in-game messageboard with the occasional update here would be seem to me to be ideal.
Yup, that is another option we have.
At the end of the day, I've apologised for my comments this morning. It was a silly issue and I reckon the sooner it's all forgotten the better.
That seems like a good idea.
Blimey. I've seen the US TV ratings for IndyCar this year. Shocking.
Good shocking or bad shocking?
That's what happens when you put it on a channel not everyone can get.
Shame really coz the racing's good this year!
Excellent, now that's dealt with I can admit my purely selfish motive for keeping it going: I want in on a game later in the year :-)
Has it?
There may have been a lot of fuss about the game that never started, but apart from that?
Terribly bad.
The racing this year has been worse than last year. Kansas was said to be a borefest (I've not got around to watching it yet) although they did have the excuse of the high winds and tornado warnings to contend with..
Drop.io'd! Say hello to Askepot (Cinderella)!
As do I. I wouldn't want to see it die out just because of pitiful little issues like these.
Ah. I'm currently watching St. Pete and I'm quite enjoying it!
Don't make comments like you did earlier then!
Yep I liked that one. I'm planning to watch Long Beach later.
Can we draw another line? And someone tell Chris when he comes in later..
CUTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Bless her/him ;)
Sorry, couldn't quite contain myself on the matter. Will try harder in future :)
The clue is in the name?
Right, what now...
I've completely wasted today reading my RSS's. Haircut didn't happen because I slept too long (shouldn't have stayed up late doing homework every night). Golf is now tomorrow. Maybe I should get a practice paper out of the way and then watch Long Beach. Cup of tea first.
kitteh! I'm not a cat person but I can't resist a kitten :D
Hiding under the chest of drawers!! Kittens are great.
yeah, i saw that lol, but some people give their cats wierd names and not actually related to the sex of the cat..
We've had a little rabit in our garden recently, must have got lost or something, its such a cute little thing but really shy, runs off at every moment!!
Played it safe I see ;)
oooh yes
i have a habit of guessing *ahem* human *ahem* genders wrong, so i played it safe with animals
Just thought I'd alert you all to my updated profile: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/RubberGoat+(Gavin+Brown)
awwww!!!! cute!!
ok now i'm wishing i could get a little kitten again. i mean, our cat is abit lonely since she has been on her own for a bit... :D
So do I. I want a cat or a dog, but because I rent, it ain't possible :(
as i checked drop.io i also noticed mr and mrs c are having a day at the beach/ out (sorry if this has already been mentioned). hope they are having a nice time, the weather is certainly lovely :)
It's hot out here too. There's more mayday madness today - Denmark is one big party!
oh thats who it is!! whoopsie
Yep. And lots of Ferrari pics are appearing now.
oh i forgot it was mayday... i've no idea if anything is happening around here, all i know is it's lovely and warm and i wish i wasn't stuck inside doing textiles. :(
I'd quite like some sun/warmth back. I was cooking my dinner tonight at 5.30pm thinking that only 6 weeks ago it was light enough for F1 cars to be qualifying here, and this week it was pitch black. I'd hate to think how early it will get dark in the middle of winter.
i assume it's mrs c, as well there is a comment saying
'Mrs christine at the seaside: '
:D
Haven't been outside all day. Maybe I should have done. Wish I lived in town so I could just wander about the saturday market for a bit. I can't be bothered to do the 25 min walk there, same back, from here..
Must be Gavin's. He's in a couple of them anyway :P
I just uploaded a video onto youtube, and it hadn't even processed before it got withdrawn due to a copyright claim by FOM. It was an interview with Mark Webber for Australian TV - do FOM own the rights to all driver images? I thought it was just the world feed.
I don't think FOM own the rights to that interview. Contact YouTube.
Hey folks, managed to nick a few minutes away to go to the 'toilet'.
Am loving the cat pics on drop.io, find them so cute
But someone else probably does
I won't bother fighting it, because I am breaching the uploading rules by uploading a TV show, but I did find it a bit odd it was FOM of all people.
Couldn't you just write in the description that all rights to this clip belong to the TV station the interview's from?
nope, the law doesn't work that way unfortunately.
pah, that would be common sense!
You could always try this F1 fan beats FOM over you-tube clip withdrawl
Oh yeah .. and the guy won. There's a later blog post about it below the initial post
He did very well but my video isn't footage I recorded myself, it's blatantly ripped from my PVR. It's a shame because the channel I recorded it off is only available in metropolitan cities and I know a lot of rural Mark Webber fans here in Aus who would like to see the features from the pre-race show.
That's a bummer
Yes, we have been to the beach today. Had ice cream, watched some ducklings, got a bit wet by the waves. Have returned now, trawling sand through all the rooms.
Thats awesome :D
:D
fom claim to own copyright on anything recorded within the confines on the perimeter fence at grand prix. where was the interview conducted?
haven't read all the details, but it sounds like he just hasn't been challenged yet. he hasn't gone head-to-head with fom and won has he?
it was definitely in the paddock
his 'win' is that fom didnt challenge him
yeah, you've no chance.
was trying to work out why your massa video hasn't been pulled yet, and i'm wondering if the copyright checking software needs more than 17 seconds worth of material to work with?
in that case, most certainly a win in inverted commas :)
a good start though.
possibly - the kimi and his icecream vid was 28 seconds
might be a good experiment to conduct. upload video in one second increments and see which ones survive.
I couldn't agree with him more, it would be great to see events unfolding from someone attending the race.
so true, the first thing I did when I was picking which grandstand to sit in the first time I went to the GP was search youtube for clips of the view from each of my options.
there are some serious double-standards going on there, seeing as the stewards used fan footage from fuji '07 to make the call on lewis' driving etiquette.
LOL you're right. To me, that was done to try and undermine Lewis because of all the rubbish that happened that year. Definitely double standards though!
I'm disappointed we didn't get to see DC back into a car. not that i want to discuss reverse gear in f1 cars again...but yeah, sad to see DC out in many respects, now if a kiwi gets a drive, then the sport is really moving global which is good. maybe it might even go to the US sometime. those boston pictures are great, and i might be moving there this year - maybe the paper and me will team up to get an F1 street race happening! i can dream....
They did? was the footage online or provided by a fan attending?
*waves exhaustidly* hello you lovely people :)
OMG! I can't believe that the Indycars race on street circuits and there's no reverse gear in the gearbox!
Hi Lukeh :)
I think it was fan footage...
i think it was online stuff from memory.
Next installment in the Greatest Racing Eras series on my blog :)
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2009/05/greatest-racing-eras-group-b-rally-cars.html
Ooh I look forward to reading it! :D
Yep, it was an "alternate angle" of the incident showing Lewis' questionable driving under the safety car which caused the Vettel-Webber shunt.
i see we are both a little vague on the idea. i think it was fan footage that was online. i can't remember a deal being made about somebody posting a video file to the stewards or anything. i think they just kept saying "fan footage" though.
off to do a kimi and get icecream..
Aha, you're a fan of Group B too I take it! :D
My first rally I ever attended was the RAC rally when it was a Group B race!
footage was uploaded by a fan to youtube caused controversy in fan forums and blogs:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2007/10/02/you-decide/
the stewards were alerted, i think by ed gorman, and the youtube footage was reviewed by the stewards inside the chinese paddock (the next race).
Sweeeeeet! :D Which year was it?
I am sooooo not jealous of your day... :(
*waves back only with more vigour*
hoorah, have just been invited to breakfast at my favourite cafe, where the food looks like this and the view looks like this.
I learnt this year that they stay open when the Grand Prix is on - the food is better than anything you'd get actually inside the circuit so next year I may duck out for lunch and hope 100,000 other people aren't doing the same.
Fun fact of the day: the aerial shots of Albert Park on google maps were taken whilst the circuit was being deconstructed a few years ago.
thanks for that.
Actually I'm in a surprisingly good day considering all the panic buying (we're closed for 1 day and people go mad, it's insane). It doesn't feel right being in a good mood after work, I feel like Piquet after a good performance - "What the hell just happened?!"
Oh by the way, the poll to decide which WSC DVD I'm to buy finished yesterday and it will be 1988!
Probably 1986... I don't remember much and I may have a photo somewhere...
yay! when are you buying?
invitations always welcome. where's mine? ;)
Sometime next week, if not in the near future. But when I do go to make a purchase that will be the first of those DVDs I buy, promise ;)
Oh gavin, I have something to tell you - remember our conversation on here the other night about mentioning work online, and that guy I know from work who put something in his facebook status?
I found out today he has a warning tribunal next week...
Uh-oh. Busted.
if you can make it in time for breakfast, which is probably in about 7 hours (which means I should be asleep), feel free ;)
Poor guy :( That's why work should be kept away from the internet!
If it was, you were lucky - you were one of the spectators to witness the last ever Group B WRC event.
How did 6pm happen?
Oops! Why would you do that if your boss was a friend on there?
I'm always lucky ;)
I don't like forced invitations ;) Hmmm. 7 hours...my concorde is in the shop and i'm still waiting for my virgin intergalactic ticket to be valid so i'll have to pass :( why are you still awake? is there tennis? you are so typecast...
Time?
Because 5pm was an hour ago?
From what I know, he didn't really care, he got so upset that he was willing to take the risk. still, I would've just kept it in and got on with things rather than risk slander because of frustration.
Was it? It 3pm a minute ago
there was tennis but its finished, and Roger let me down again. Now I'm awake because theres no sheets on my bed and actually putting some on it would require getting out of my chair.
Nah. Let me say it: my boss make decisions i would call stupid, but i'm sure he has his reasons for making really dumb decisions. does this cover me?
I went to the last ever Wellington Street Race in 1996 too. The fact that it took 12 years of arguing before the petrolhead capital of NZ took the round away from Pukekohe (which is the Silverstone of NZ) shows how frustrating it is to live in NZ now.
And I attended the only GP at Donington, S****'s greatest race where he stopped in front of me at the end. So I'm doing OK so far!
Sleeping bag?
i saw something about Roger (i was near the swiss tv station). I think there should be a sheet fairy that deals with that sort of stuff. i don't need room service, but just one days when it gets to bed time and the bed just isn't organised...and the fairy comes. simple.
You've been everywhere!
mines in NZ :(
Maybe there should be a place on the wiki for races we have attended. Either in our profile or a new page..
A new page sounds like a great idea.
I'll get onto it ;)
is anyone going to the Ferrari store opening on Wednesday? latest info seems to be that there'll be a Ferrari display outside in Conduit St starting at 10:45. At 11:30 Kimi will be interviewed and have pics taken with the display cars. He will be there with 2 other drivers and will be at the shop until about 3pm.
Do we think that comment should be moved to my guest post?
Here 'ya :)
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Race+Attendances
Good stuff.
we started the day off with a plug for the big pic, but really liking today's:
http://www.f1bigpicture.com/
:)
is it the same ferrari store? and do we know why you were allowed in it, if kimi hasn't opened it yet?
Oooh, very nice that one :)
Oooh wow, loving the whole silohuettey feel to it.
Epic fail by Ferrari there if it's true :D
Nice one, thanks :-)
No idea - but the store was open for business and nothing seemed out of the ordinary...
talking of the wiki. someone's gone a bit table crazy:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodpanel
Knight RIder?
Wasn't me - I'm the numbers and pretty graphs guy round here ;)
Awww wow, she's still jenson's PA. That's fantastic :)it's a bit of a shame we won't get as many but it's delightful to hear from her :D
Nice find lou!
Have you seen my wiki page BTW?
Wiki says it was last edited by a mrschristine. Do we know anyone by that name? Doesn't ring a bell for me.
that is a good find. slightly baffled as to the use of a stay-at-home-pa, but i'm funny like that.
nope. which one?
it has a beautiful picture ;)
So is Lewis Hamilton, it seems ;)
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/RubberGoat+(Gavin+Brown)
took me a few reads to get that one!
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/RubberGoat+(Gavin+Brown)
ha! excellent :)
me too!
I pride myself in obscure humour ;)
lol i've been trying to find out where she is for some time, you may have noticed ;) maybe she needs the time at home for some reason... i'm pleased she is still in the JB world though :)
love the pic gavin! :)
mmm I can smell Lasagne cooking for tea :)
Cheers!
Oh no! My cornetto just fell apart...
yesterday I spilt tea in my face (please dont ask) and now cornettos dont like me.
*shakes fist at general snacks*
I like that London's big wheel thing actually works - they spent a year building the Melbourne one, at a cost of $100,000,000 - it worked for 5 weeks, then it broke. They're taking it all down now and apparently it will be up and working again in a little over a year. Epic wheel fail.
You munter! stick to animal crackers!
that's for all those Kimi jokes you must have made.
Is this going to be Kimi's excuse for doing badly now?
they should have turned it into a giant wheel of fortune.
Love it :D
:D:D
The funny thing about the London Eye is that it was only supposed to be temporary (for the millenium) but it's now London's top tourist attraction!
Top tip for being a sidepodtourist in London. Buy fast track tickets for EVERYTHING before you turn up. Impulsive visits mean hour-long queues!
"My Magnum melted and got into the KERS system and..."
so was the response directed at you, or are more people interested in her whereabouts?
she must be f1's most famous pa.
The Melbourne one is something ridiculous like $30 for a short trip in it, and it was built in a place where they only view is shipping yards. A little bit like the Valencia circuit, really.
what do you mean now?
The London Eye isn't cheap. But it was a fantastic experience!
how long are you in there for?
I was referring to in future races from Spain onwards, since he was 6th in Bahrain.
1x half-hour revolution. More than enough time!
not that i'm biased, but i'm trying to forget that (ahem) decent-ish result.
It's about 30 mins if I remember correctly?
There's always an exception to every rule ;)
so I updated the race attendances list and mine is a bit longer than I'd realised :-)
although I cheated and listed by year instead of Scott's listing years at each race, maybe I should adjust mine for space-saving
about to do mine, think it'll be the shortest :D
I was really enjoying all those anti ferrari headlines and news stories but now I can't say I've heard anything this week, but I've been pretty busy. might watch the motogp tomorrow and a1gp (is that sunday or monday?)
mainly a general comment, i was the first to ask where she was back in australia, but since then loads of people have been asking about her. yesh she probably is, she was Danii Monogue's PA once, and also Jacques Villeneuve's PA once apon a time.
if you're bored, we've been to silverstone twice... err, and that's it.
Goodwood? Autosport?
http://www.ferrari.com/English/News/Pages/090403_COR_store_regent_street.aspx
Now she finally has a good career to be a part of, yay!
Sorry, far too tempting... :P
done, better
Both Sunday...
no racing at autosport, cept the rush to the exit.
hillclimb doesn't count.
Sidepodscience? You cheater, you!
Everything counts.
:-D
yeah thanks. i was getting confused by the countdown clock on the main page that says 1day and 20 somethings hours... 11am and 3pm local (british) time.
if you're talking about general event appearances, don't forget the following pages:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodtour
I should add that yes, it was the same Ferrari store and the article says that it was open for business from March 3. So no exclusive access, I'm afraid :(
this was for a1gp which you can watch live, or at least you could a few races ago when i had the time.
i may have just reversed all your changes, oops. And why does bold in the wiki hate me? I can't bold anything :(
No probs I'll re-edit and put in a link for Sidepodtour while I'm at it.
Depends on the browser you use. Chrome doesn't like the wiki...
ahh thats my problem. I gave up on firefox because it didn't like flash.
should be okay now: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Race Attendances
And the lclt is pants on the chrome...
I reckon I've done alright considering I have lived for 12 years in the Wopwops!
Not too shabby at all, some good stuff in there.
lclt only works on chrome for me :s
I realise this could quickly turn into another contest, like the postcounts. "I've done more than you". So it needs to be said that this list is aimed at sharing experiences at different events.
Comment in moderation
just watched the Bahrain video on F1.com. a little disappointing. i think they could have captured the adrenalin of those first few laps a bit more, and on reflection that second half of the race did kind of drag on a bit. video could have been better, or was the race that dull visually speaking? i had fun watching it though....
the video recap had more daddyham than the 2 hour race broadcast itself did :(
Last year, a few of us decided that if you show a minute of country cliches, eg baquettes in france, you know the video wasn't great. maybe this year we measure a bad race by dad appearances. hey - is there an f1 drinking game? (of soft drink obviously) - driver's dad on tv, random celebrity on grid walk (eg robert plant, eric clapton), piquet spins, commentator saying GO GO GO...thoughts?
Everything sidepodcast related works like a charm in Chrome for me :)
Evening all :)
Hey alex :)
I have never been to a car race of any kind...
I suppose that is why I run http://www.SofaF1.com ;)
Well that seems to have shocked everyone into silence...
I'm off out for dinner. Have fun everyone :)
oh yeah, that's true. I think I will delete what I just wrote
Have a great evening Alex :D
daddyham?
LewHam's dad.
Hi Alex, bye Alex :-)
Out of curiosity, what did you write?
Daddyham sounds like a crap town name :)
And why delete it?
Not a lot, been to Testing @Silverstone 4 times, once to quali and also the 2007 British GP
Just looking at the Wiki history of that one and I can't understand the problem with it, looked good to me.
Not that I saw it, but I heard about comment numbers being seen as a bit of a competition and this is in the same ilk.
please don't delete your writing jackie. pretty please.
Sorry me, it was just that Pat's later comment about competition made sense. If it's possible to have it undeleted then I am fine with it, I just didn't want to cause offence to anyone
I have seen an elk... If there's a competition to be had about elks I'm...
...ah ilks ;)
Bye :)
oooooh. it's wine o'clock in our house :)
:D :D
right, time for zzz otherwise i'll never make it to breakfast. have a good evening, europeans!
Red, white or rose?
Can I be a welk now and crawl back in my shell
i'll ask the lady, she's a wiki wiz ;)
fear not though, as far as i know you've never have, and are never likely to offend anyone jackie ;)
We have names, ya know ;)
Night Australi...I mean Amy ;)
ah lucky. i really feel like some rose tonight, but i'm out and kinda can't have any :( lol
what about the sheets tho?
Jake Humphrey on his local football team:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2009/05/glory_hunting_is_not_for_me.html
The lad's got talent, he has.
nope. will shall not let you. stay and enjoy wine o'clock with us.
we have plenty. four bottles and a box here. will you join us :)
Tonight I am having a Cutler Crest Zinfandel from Sunny California.
One downside of the credit crunch is that gifts of wine from suppliers have plummeted exponentially :(
must keep an eye on spc tonight then... ;)
No it was fine. I suggested the page in the first place. :-)
I just noted that it has the potential to become a ***ing contest and wanted to head it off before it went there.
I may have to fire up the Guinness and curry facilities.
I'm thinking of being a bit of a couch potato and sending out for some food, 2 classic biscuits and some cornflakes isn't really healthy easting for the day
That's quite a mix!
I bought the Guinness despite there being a half price offer on loads of wine in Tesco. I am idiot.
Oooh *laughs* I'd be visiting the loo after that
Yes I shall have to switch to lager during the curry consumption or it'll go horribly wrong
The radiation suits are on standby.
sounds like a plan. i'm sending out for food too. i've sent christine out to the kitchen.
It's usually about now Flibster comes in, mentions the chocolate word and runs away leaving me wanting some
Now Dad is pestering me about cars by text message.
I have some cookies, that'll do me for the evening
You naughty man, give the lady an evening off
Yeah make her a cupcake or something!
she enjoys it... apparently. plus i provided the wine :)
I'll be picking up a selection of Mexican beer (no Corona) to get an early start on the Cinco de Mayo festivities.
what sorta cookies?
maryland :D currently on sale in... a certain supermarket.
I have cheesecake... :D
What's on the Sidepodmenu then?
lol i'd love to, but am teaching a friend psychology this evening :(
cinco de mayo... remind me. i learnt last year and have forgotten already?
tasty ones,
what??
Sounds...interesting...?
random question, how long, on average does a fillet of salmon take to cook?
Actually have Lemon Cheesecake, fresh strawberries or Apple Pie with cinnamon ice cream tonight.
sausages, mash and something called spring greens. i might skip them tho.
What size is it and what sort of cooking?
I think it's mexican independence day.
Is your google broke or something? ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_mayo
christine said... "grill or oven"?
yeah it's great, i love psychology, my favourate subject, just wish i had rose too:
Mmmmmmmmm salmon.
Not that it helps... :(
oven
Grr I don't want to go shopping :D
How does John Barrowman get so many shows on the BBC? It's terrifying stuff. I'm susprised he didn't present the F1, he's in everything else!
Depends if you are using the Freud, Kafka, Descartes or Nietzsche method...
Logic is cool...
Mexican army beating the French army (who hasn't) in 1862 Battle of Peubla.
Can I show you a black flag! You're determined to make me want sweet stuff
christine guesses 20mins. but thinks flibster is the man to ask.
Oops, it's lemon cheesecake... silly me... :D
Oh...
Sidepodsalmon?
ahh cheers. i remember a rocketboom special on it last year. i learn... then i forget.
Gotta make room for a cupcake recipe up there somewhere...
See you in a bit .. heading out for Chicken and Mango curry
hehehe thanks. that's what i thought too. in answer to Flibsters earlier question it's like an average fillet of normal salmon :D
Depends on the size of the piece - 20 minutes is about average though.
I wouldn't oven cook salmon at all tbh. I'd poach or steam it.
logic?
http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=940
Maverick's post on KERS (Thanks Jackie)
I see KERS like Turbos - unreliable at first, but after a while you'd be foolish not to have one on your car...
I do have a cake to make on Monday though - has so much nasty stuff in it. :D
Will have to put the recipie up on the wiki. ;)
I like Salmon in the smoked raw variety with dill mustard dressing :)
I'll have to ask my mum for the recipe to 'Ten Ton Twix Cake' - nothing beats it!
Umm, I did some PHIL papers at uni and one was on logic - I loved it!
*cough* we aren't brilliant cooks tbh, but am trying my best. lol my friend made me make sure it was the right time, she is a little paranoid about making sure things cook for the right amount of time :P
Aww I'm re-reading BATracer again... a completely mad race but a complete disaster for Brawn :(
trust the weather to change as I pit, grr.
You see that's how unrealistic it is - in real life Ross Brawn would have used that to his advantage and won you the race :)
and told us to pit for wets instead of 15 laps in heav rain on intermediates
*bitter at batracer* :D
we like to be useful.
right food calling, back soon.
:D
have fun
Hey this is Lou's friend...just to say i am not paranoid!!!!!!! i've just never cooked salmon before! and she'll just blame me if i poison her!
Hello lou's friend :) don't worry about it, I got paranoid about toast today so salmon's not too bad to be paranoid about :P
although please no poisoning! :D
When cooked it should flake nicely - it should still be moist though.
hi lou's friend. can we have pics when it's done pls?
:D
of course!!! i'll have to charge my phone though...the camera broke! :(
excellent. back shortly.
watch, it'll be a perfectly cooked, succulent salmon and we'll all be mega jealous ;)
okay Lou's back now...better go. I get addicted to these things easily.. haha
haha gosh i go away for two mins and she is chatting to you guys about salmon. lol :) time to get on with a bit of revision, i'll send in a pic of the salmon when it's cooked :)
*wavesnbye bye* :D
:D
I didn't hear a *thwack*
She may not have read it yet.. ;)
My mum's looking at painting an abstract canvas and that's got me thinking about painting a canvas of my own. Blowing up a picture of an F1 car, tracing it and then painting it. Would look rather nice in my room I think.
That makes me wonder - do you think he's going to do another one of those?
Question about Robert Kubica's nationality on 1 vs 100 :D
Good job the guy played his dodge, cos he got it wrong :D
We must stop him!
Why? It's funny! :D
ok, for those of you that wanted to see the salmon once it was cooked
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo0122-jpg
oh and we also had a lovely dessert
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo0122-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo0124-jpg
Yum!
oops the first link was supposed to be
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo0123-jpg
wow. can't believe we invited you here, when your house is clearly the place to be!
lol sadly not my house. tis my friends house ;) we used to have those kinda magnums some time last week, but they weren't around for long :P
yum!
:o!! kimi-esque ;)
don't we all :)
apparently she's now upset i prefer lou's magnums over her sausages.
they're my magnum's not Lou's. allllll mine!
damn it, i'm starting to like this place. i should stop or i'll never pass my exams.
Does Franck like sausages? ;)
It's embarrassing!
I don't think he'll do another one... but we can only hope...
I would love to see the back of Ferrari an I am only sorry it didn't happen 50 years ago. Being successful when the governing body is blatantly biased toward them for most of their existence is no great achievement. Lotus overtook Ferrari's total of wins but dropped back after Chapman died and then went out of business. McLaren overtook them before Schumacher went to Maranello. Had Schumacher not gone there McLaren could be 50 or 100 wins ahead of them. Ferrari's record is massively overstated.
and so the addiction begins... :P
:D lol i would agree with you, about prefering magnums over sausages... just because well, i don't each sausages. lol i'm sure they were lovely though
It begins!
she doesn't even like f1! lol
I like Vettel :D
Who said you need to like F1? ;)
She will when we're finished with her! ;)
Another challenge for you to get someone interested in something awesome? ;)
That's enough F1 knowledge to qualify.
I've never seen Magnum in a box before.
That's a bit of a bloody pretentious box for a Magnum!
Eek! Why? just, that, why? what is the point of extra 'rubbish...
Although being that shiny it might make an interesting 'mini solar cooker' as an experiment I supose....
Come to Denmark, we have proper sausages here!
( I was originally going to say "Come to Denmark and I'll show you a sausage" but realised it might get taken the wrong way! :D )
:D she smiled. We are going to go now, just cause she is already starting to get really addicted, she hears me talk about this place all the time and once she figured out how the doohickey worked she started to get very addicted, i've sent her into the other room now. She's already part of other online communities, i fear for her health and exam results if she were to be part of another atm. speak to y'all later!
I dunno why but 'I sent her into the other room' has me in the giggles...!
talk to you later lou :)
*pokes sidepodcast's tummy*
wakey wakeyy!
Guys,
Apparently Denmark now makes a Supercar called a Zenvo ST1. I've just read an article and seen a video about it here and it must be pretty special, because I've never seen a Danish man so happy and talkative before (well at least while still sober)!
just went into the other room to check on doohickey. she was sleeping peacefully.
Aww :D same here. Am writing up a blog entry i'm still unsure about but we'll see when it's done, although not f1 related.
But does ice cream need a mini solar cooker?
LOL
might be useful for cooking mini something elses though - couple of cupcakes or cookies for the end of a days camping for example :-)
DP drooled at the picture, even though he was eating icecream already :-) I can't abide things that come in tons of packaging for the sake of it (not to mention the mark up for the box!), so wondering if there was a reuse for said box that might be enough of an excuse for DP to have one 'just to try'...
LPG is just a rabid greenie with a nasty F1 habit....
hello you lovable lot (questionable). Miss anything? Pleeeeeease say you haven't started anything new
Okay, it appears I have walked into a black hole.
*waves* hello mr RG. it's very quiet here tonight!
Just some more sidepodcookery, RG.
Watch this video: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/28/video-zenvo-st1-proves-dreams-to-come-true/
'Tis awesome! Has 1100hp and can do 230mph+! :D
And because it's Danish, it runs on a combination of herrings and Gammel Dansk!
Finally back home from a week on the road.
Funny I am cooking salmon too tonight. Instead of using the standard mahi mahi or orata I am trying it with some coho salmon I caught last fall. Should be interesting.
For mexican beer, I would recommend "Dos X" if you can get it.
Interesting. I guess what you need is something that cooks in the time it takes to eat a Magnum.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/lewishamilton/5259892/Lewis-Hamilton-snubs-McLaren-ex-mentor-Ron-Dennis.html
Hmmmmmm
Not likely in the UK though. Would be more likely that you would eat the magnum on a previous occasion and then use the box as the basis for a cooker for future times. Cake in a solar cooker in the UK usually takes c. 3 hours unless you can really insulate....
It sounds great. The side looks like it is based on the McLaren F1 style
Personally I think it's a 5 pints of awesome combination between the new Nissan GT-R, Audi R8 and a hot VW Scirocco. :D
This may seem stupid, but i've just realised that Danish people don't speak english....
there's my stupid moment for today!
Just wrote up a new blog entry if anyone's interested, it's not about F1 but rather the art of story telling in video games...
http://toata.blogspot.com/2009/05/14-sit-down-and-ill-tell-you-story.html
Thought I'd give it a plug nevertheless ;)
Sweet. It looks like a cross between a Lotus Elise and the DB9 LeMans car.
Plug away, we love the plugtasticness.
Instead of doing anything productive like coursework or looking for a car, I watched the 2008 WTCC finale at Macau earlier. Utter craziness! I've got the F3 races for future watching.. hate to think what they got up to..
I'm watching the build up to the Kentucky Derby. Race horse jockeys make F1 drivers look like NBA basketball centers.
That is probably why Gavin is learning Danish
I thought he already knew it.
That would make sense
I'm getting there!
See, before I read your Wiki page I thought you were already from Denmark!
I have these. They rock.
http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/grilliput-camping-set/index.html
Oh, speaking of Wiki pages, I kinda decided to do mine in the same style as Gavin's :P
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Scott+Woodwiss
you missed page 22? :(
Don't you have to go outside to make use of something like that? Scary.
I do have the said magazine with page 22! I shall take a picture when I can :)
Nope. have used them on the cooker using the hoot to vent the smoke out. :D
Nah, just have ventilation. Storm kettles are good inside as well...
Its the 'use the sun' things that require outside outside. And even then only the food/cooker needs to be outside, you just visit to fill and empty :-)
Unless you are really sophis. and have one built into the wall of your house erk!
I have just caught up with comments... just in time to go to bed!
Cuh!!
Or rather I was caught out still up!!!
I get into this situation a lot... http://xkcd.com/386/
:D
I spend a lot of time correcting people who are wrong on the internet. Vital work I believe.
Our flat is south facing.
The window in the bedroom is 12ft long by 6ft high
Lounge is 18ft long by 6ft high.
My playroom is 12ft long by 6ft high *but also completely covered - no natural light gets in at all*
In summer it would hapilly hit 35°C inside *without the aircon we had fitted*
Why would we need to stick it on the wall outside? ;)
(hearts)
That is the BEST one I've ever seen.
Speaking of webcomics, you heard of Cyanide and Happiness? :D
Hahahaha, brilliant!
Mr C... just a quick thing before I really really really go...
If the thing with the sleeping doohicky is to reduce processor time wouldn't it be best to make all of the comments when it wakes up load in one hit rather than no more than (what is it) 20 comments?
I imagine it would be lighter on the server an it would certainly be easier from a reading perspective... Because just when you start reading again it moves...
Only a minor thing :)
Sidepodhugs to all :)
Goodnigh!
http://xkcd.com/447/
:D
lol
you may be the exception - how much light do you get into the south facing rooms? Need light (lux) more than heat for solar cooking... now making jerky/dehydrating/drying is another matter entirely :-D
Re: Aircon - we don't have any and keep it cool(er) by restricting airflow and using curtains/blinds (so reduction in lux) in summer. Leaving the windows open and all light coming in would see 30+ quite easily in the living room (the south facing one!) or the childrens bedroom (ditto) but I can keep it 'down' to 12C quite easily (well, did last summer when we had 30C days, gord only knows about this year with the predicted many more at that level!!).
Ruddy useful in winter though, having good potential for solar gain :-D
good plan, we can try it and monitor the graphs.
night sir.
I should get around to doing one. Maybe I'll do it in a mo if I can think of anything to put there.
Brilliant :-)
God I love watching the video to Supreme by a certain mr Robbie Williams. Damn fine song too!
More music videos need classic f1 :P
'Tis a good video!
Far too much light. Can see the sun pretty much from sunrise to sunset sadly.
Only have 2 windows that open in the place - one in the bedroom and one in the lounge. The ones in my playroom are sealed shut and were when we moved in. Although the window does now have a layer of corrogated plastic sheeting that is coated in spray chrome. Keeps the light out very nicely.
We have blackout blinds on all the other windows - which is fine, they just aren't that much of a defence against the amount of light we get.
Even today the temperature in the flat after we went out hit 29°C as we forgot to switch the aircon on... There is no way to keep the flat cool without it - all our rooms are southfacing. :(
The house we''re moving to on the other hand - aircon gets fitted soon. Shouldn't need it in my playroom that much though. Thats in the basement. :D
just reading good post on reacting to a situation from mike.
applicable to racing but also to many other situations.
Ouch... you sound like you could do with a visit from an 'advisor' (energy/heat one, there is a 'title' but it escapes me atm...)
Blackout blinds can help - but if they are presenting a dark side to the light outside they can also become sources of radiant heat and make the situation worse :-( White or light or shiny are the ways to go :-) (do feel for you, house before this one was a heat-up nightmare until I newspapered the windows one summer in a fit of argh... and found that it worked erk!
But basements can be fantastic heat sinks for the rest of a house as well :-)
fans of twit may find christine's latest blog post interesting. i wasn't a calacanis fan before, most certainly am not now :(
I blame Sandi Toksvig
hey all it's me again :) i've just returened from my friends. she thanks you all very much for helping with the salmon situation :)
gone all emotional from watching the Senna stuff on the BBC website :(
what a legend.
heya lou :)
'Tis a good documentary. I've seen a few times now, mostly on YT.
I'm saying 'Tis a lot today.
But no-one in Denmark knows who she is!
Does your friend have a name or is she really called Lou's friend. Maybe she just likes to be anonymous but who would do that?
Just thinking about the Palmer Sport thing again. When you drive in the Palmer Jaguar JP1 or Formula Jaguar, there's 2 onboard cameras on each and you get to keep the footage on a flash drive :D
Well, she does seem to spend all her time here, lol.....
if she were trully anonymous she'd have at least six alternate names.
:D
We only know 2 of yours - me and Mr C - what are the other 4 then?
Nothing we can do. At least the heating bill is cheap in summer - in winter too as one of the first things we did was rip out all the storage heaters and replace them with a single portable oil heater. Even that is rarely on as the chap downstairs has his heating on 24x7 in winter as does the chap above. ;)
They are white on the outside - I'd prefer black to be fair, as although that may reach a higher temperature, it cools down faster. Best method I found to stay cool while at uni was to have a really old tshirt and dunk it in cold water then wring most of it out and put it on damp - magnificent :D
I just want to live in 16°C weather... Nothing hotter than 20°C - My brain stops working at that point.. ;)
she says i'm allowed to tell you her name is Naomi. She thought it would be simpler to call herself 'Lou's friend' though cause at the time it would have sounded strange her coming online talking about salmon when no one knew who she was. lol
Franck, Sebastien, Rob and Smedders?
hullo naomi.
She has a point, we instantly knew exactly who it was rather than wondering who the mysterious Naomi (if that's her real name) was.
That makes two of us!
I have suggested learning interesting complicated languages and moving to scandinavia, but Andy wasn't keen, lol...
Thought - does your front door open into an enclosed corridor? Cracking the door slightly when you are there at the height of the day could help a bit (for the time you have left, lol). Other than that, without seeing its a bit hard to suggest anything (and is drastically OT even for here :-) )
just to say hi back really :D
I'm honoured that you are all still talking about me...i must have made a good impression....
You could always move to Copenhagen - everybody speaks English there...
Nope. It's normally really hot in the corridor - but the stairs are normally really cool. :(
Hi Naomi. Just wanted to say welcome and that passing exams isn't all it's cracked up to be.
We've captured another one! :D
:) I've been to Copenhagen, I know what you mean.
I have never thought that I had to be formally introduced to someone before I could discuss salmon. I must bring myself up to speed on modern etiquette
oh no...you're really going to get addicted if you're not careful... i should have never asked about the salmon! :P
BOO YEAH! :D
hahaha... well it would have involved explaining, and i think the original idea was to comment while i was not in the room. lol
Just like fishing. There you go back to salmon again.
It's fantastic that someone's come into the world of sidepodcast through the questioning of salmon. Perhaps in my future career wherever it may lie I should try and introduce myself via questioning of how to cook a pancake in style...
do you have a wiki page yet? it's been several hours after all...
She's only at Stage 2 according to the Wiki ;)
We should have a random question button on the front page. That way newbies can introduce themselves by asking unual questions without an explanation.
Have we established if Naomi likes F1? Not that it's important or anything, it'd be nice to know though.
She likes Vettel, and apparently that's enough in our book :D
She said earlier she liked Vettel which is close enough
Most people were given a link or through google...
She can genuinly say that it's all Lou's fault! :D
Well, yes.... but I grew up in a household with a parent who spoke 7 languages and was told it was rude not to at least try! Needless to say that I don't really do anything but English (veryredface) although I can usually get the gist from written or spoken, just have ab.so.lute.ly nil chance of a stab at responding... the voice of the parent is there at the back of my mind goading me and I go blanker than a blank blankety blank card
yup, she likes vettel. she already knows more than us ;)
So i Naomi going to be live commenting next weekend or is she going to be around to support Lou on Sunday night?
I like Vettel, but thats cause as a joke i said i'd support him once and then he went and won. the only other F1 stuff i know is from Lou, she tells me random stuff.
To stage 3 already? Man, this would be a quick transition!
see this is where the knowledge goes....whats happening next sunday?
Uh oh, I smell another competition brewing - who can get from stage 1 to stage 7 (or is it 8) the fastest?
no she isn't meant to know about that!...
nothing.
:D
I think that the cat may have already left the bag on that one....
Have you heard about Kimi's hat?
Next weekend is the Spanish GP but this Sunday evening Lou is co-hosting a podcast. You have to be around for that to hear how good she is.
OOPS Too late
:D
This is the part where lou kills Steven
Steven's fault!
oh wow, you mean she's actually agreed to do it? i'm deffo there! thats history in the making ;)
As always! :D
most of my friends have heard about kimi's hat... i had a long rant about it once. lol
grrr.
i think we need an induction list:
- buemi's 3-tenths
- hand gestures for james allen
- cupcakes
- cogs
anything else?
i didn't agree.... Steven made me. lol
oh she moans to me about the co-hosting stuff... i have to say though i've been made to listen to a couple of podcasts and they are very good.
and yes i've heard about the hat...she showed it to me. i have to say it kinda looks like a riding hat.
Speaking of which, what time is the debrief/panel? Usual time?
I want one, and a pair of sunglasses, a Ferrari shirt and a Magnum so I can do an impression of Kimi.
Next thing you know it will be my fault lou is co-hosting in the first place
Argh, cogs!
THAT WOMAN?
i made her listen to Christine's Felipe Baby song. She's been humming it all evening! :)
is the correct answer ;)
you WANT a kimi hat?! you mean a hat that looks like it's too big for you?
I agree.
:D
You are going to love it. I know you are not convinced yet but you and Jackie will do a great job and after it's over you will be so happy you have done it.
its infectious...
*starts humming*
!!!!
Funny that - there's someone whistling the same tune sitting next to me as well....
Surely pandas?
And otters pockets
hmmm..... i've still got to think of a really evil killer question. you'll be on the panel right? :P
It's good to know you tell them the things that matter.
:D
Marmots, Franck, Rob Smedley, cupcakes?
He has only himself to blame! :P
this is some list!
kimi's hat is a traumatic look for hats everywhere. I feel their pain.
hehe :) they all know Jenson's won some races too, and that he overtook Hamilton in the last race. Erm... and yeah they know Jenson's doing well. lol
oh she keeps talking to me about Pandas as well, and that women. that just makes me laugh!!!
We could just mention the wiki - then Naomi can look for herself.
2 killer questions - this is gonna be one awesome panel :D
Good one.
is Jackie around by any chance?
I think it gets bigger at each race... I'm scared to think what will be on his head at the end of the season...
What's Buemi's 3-tenths? Is it like Alonso's 6-tenths?
I haven't put my name down because I have been on more than anyone else but if no-one else wants to do it then I am in.
Nooooo!
am thinking of an introductory list for anybody new - here's what you need to know to make sense of sidepodcomments.
i didn't realise it was quite so long though.
well thats just given me brilliant photoshopping ideas now, gosh dom, you should be ashamed! :D
you're going to be on the panel.
Has Lou mentioned her job in the racing team?
Drunken sidepodhugs?
not sure, but she did post on facebook earlier about the panel. so she's thinking too.
but you are the alan davies of the panel :(
I may be available too... :D
i have a job in a racing team?
Kimi at Royal Ascot?
I am supposed to voluneer people not be volunteered myself. It's in the rules somewhere.
okay, you don't happen to know how many questions we are asking each do you? lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW-aQqDZgeA
Just. Effin. Glorious!
She has a job in a racing team?
You mean I am supposed to say stupid things to make everyone else look intelligent?
RSPCRF1. Flying the Osprey with Jordan
Isn't that usually the other way round with you?
We all have jobs in a racing team.
He's the anti-Alan Davies!
at a guess, maybe 5 each? but plan to drop some if people waffle.
ooooooh right! sorry i had a blank moment there.
Steven is the Stephen Fry of SPC - he always has the right answer.
ok :) will do.
and it's usually Quite Interesting too :)
i mean you get asked the question last after everyone else has picked the good ones.
...and you're always there ;)
I think it is three but it is up to you two. Normally there are about 6 questions. When I hosted I had 10 just in case and because there were only 4 panellists rather than the normal 6 I used 7 or 8 questions. But you and Jackie are in charge so you can have as manay as you like pretty much.
*prepares 1 word answers*
i know but it's you're fault i'm doing the panel so the least you can do is be on it :P
:D
I have been doing it wrong all this time. Shows how stupid I am
amen.
Maybe there's a loophole in these rules?
If? Christine always plays my theme tune at some point
*thinks of a really really really evil killer question* :P
were they badly written?
BRM V16 wins!
I was planning on heckling from the comments. I haven't scored a single point from the comments.
I think you were quite drunk...
Oopps, I appear to have put in 1 word, when I meant 100 word. What an unfortunate typo!
Bet the loophole is one of those toroidal ones that can only be made by crochet
okay I have to go to bed now, me tired. so night all and it was nice chatting to you. x
Massa may have spun 5 times at Silverstone last year but it wasn't the first time he'd achieve that magical number:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkbXVzPRf8I&NR=1
Deepest apologies for the music :D
nevah!
Well done for understanding some of what we are saying!
by a mile!
:D
well i was planning on not hosting a podcast, but sometimes plans change :P
;)
night naomi.
night! ;)
You are not allowed to go to bed this early here. It is compulsory to stay up half the night.
...Even though it has the worst sample!
:D
Will have to dig up my copy of Into The Red and sample the CD.
i have 1 point from the comments, boo ya :D
Good night Naomi
I wonder if I can score points in the comments if I am on the panel.
Night Naomi!
God that's an awful video!
hehe ;)
I would expect the answer to be no. Adjudication please.
that is a hell of a challenge!
You could pretend to be someone else on the panel?
If you say you are called Chris we wouldn't question you because it would confuse everyone...
you can certainly try... you'll have to be on the panel though :P
be on the panel...but then write your answers in the comments, and then refer to the answer in the comments, so you get your answer points and the comments points too,. genius!
If my voice holds up I may be on the panel but I can feel it going. Need to step up my swine flu warning to beige alert just in case.
hehe :)
"I just made a very good point in the comments which I'm going to steal..."
I like your thinking
ahhh beige, the steve ryder of the colour spectrum
it's alright you can be on the panel with little voice. i'm sure we will all understand you :P
you're absolutely determined to get him on aren't you :D
If his voice fades off it will be just like normal!
:D
oooh yes. it's only fair.
I think I am being set up. I am being victimised for volunteering Lou to enjoy herself.
More Georgie Thompson I think...
you like being on the panel, it's not victimising you :P it'll be fun! ;)
as discussed at the london pub meeting last month (the one you failed to attend). a majority show of hands agreed that mr. steven roy will appear on every sidepodpanel show forthwith and assume the role of alan davies.
apologies if you missed this (admittedly al-ki-hol fuelled) memo.
You think I enjoy it? I only do it because no-one else will. I kee offering to step aside but with Kathi tracking people down on skype I can't hide.
No-one told me that. Time to re-negotiate my sidepodcontract
majority show of hands might be stretching it actually... i suggested and alex nodded.
no-one objected though.
lol that's alright then, i'll just get Kathi (if she is hosting the call) to make sure you're there too :P
Damn!
mwahaha :P now i need to actually think of some more questions....
I use that almost daily. :D
You don't have much time and lots of pressure to be really good and you have to do jokes and be entertaining and keep track of the game. I wish I could play under pressure now.
Plus there isn't a race to use as inspiration.
you're meant to be being nice to me about the whole hosting thing....
we didn't panel bahrain yet.
i'm going to have to re watch the race now, yay! :P
I thought now that you have volunteered me after I volunteered you I could just heckle and wind you up. So I have to be on the panel and be nice. That's tough. :)
The best questions are generic rather than specific to an event but Lou could certainly use anything that happened there to base questions on.
hehehe :P nice and on the panel would be good ;) although the more mean you are to me the harder i will try and make the questions :P
Read the news sites as well. They will trigger ideas and of course remember Max's little meeting in Paris with the McLaren penalty and the budget cap and rules related to it. You can always ask people what they would do in any of those situations or how they would control the budget caps.
You and Jackie need to speak early tomorrow though to make sure that you have not both come up with similar questions
i'll just listen to f1minute again too :)
I don't like it when you have the power
you only have yourself to blame :P
Good idea
I've got a nice selection happening here. Dos Equis (amber & lager especial), Pacifico, Sol and Negra Modelo. I sure hope I can make it for the live show tomorrow:D
