We are starting a brand new month today, and for those of us in the UK we're heading into a bank holiday weekend. That means the weather is no doubt going to be bad, but that's okay. We're used to it. Here's what is on our minds at the moment:

  • The FIA confirmed that the budget cap for 2010 is up to £40m, which excludes all the usual things like driver salaries and marketing. It looks as though the governing body aren't entirely sure how they're going to police it, except for bringing a new committee on board, and they also haven't decided on a punishment for exceeding it either. Good work WMSC.
  • Poor Kubica seems to get most of the stick when it comes to being a tall guy, too heavy for KERS. He's not the only tall one out there, but as we have directly seen his struggles, he might be glad to know that the FIA are increasing the minimum weight by 15kg. Enough to shoulder at least some of the burden of mandating KERS.
  • I won't mention any of the other things that the FIA introduced because they are bound to cause some arguments like we saw yesterday. We have always been proud of the SPC community and how heated debate doesn't descend into a slanging match. Yesterday, some of the discussion came close to the line on a number of occasions. This is not acceptable and we will not think twice about moderating. However, hopefully, this was a one off and we can return to the calm and friendly atmosphere we are used to. Sidepodhugs all round.

That'll do it for today. Mr C is still working on small little doohickey updates (like the sleephickey) that are being introduced a bit at a time. Keep your eyes peeled, and I'll see you in the comments.

so here's the test. i'm using the updated doohickey. i've refreshed and found the latest thread. i can view the content of the thread and then post this comment without ever going near the homepage.

the issue is, no-one told me a new daily thread had arrived, i had to guess... i'll add it to the list.

if we haven't covered it, i'll copy the info. nothing major though.

    News to me

You mean Cmd+R, the Apple logo has been removed from new keyboards, they just have the "cloverleaf" symbol

    Yeah, why was that?

  • me01/05/2009 at 00:31

full changes as follows (hopefully danny won't mind me copying and pasting):

As many of you will be aware, the changing driver values is a new feature to Fantasy Racers for 2009. Following a review of the competitions progress thus far, it is necessary to make a couple of small changes to help keep the competition running in the spirit in which it is intended. Most people will not be impacted by these changes.

With effect from the Spanish Grand Prix, the following new rules are being introduced:-

    * A team will be permitted no more than 9 drivers at any one time, budget permitting.

    * The amount of points awarded for unspent budget will be capped at 200 points per race.

Whilst I do not like to add rules mid season, it is thought necessary on this occasion to prevent a potential loophole in the competitions scoring to be exploited. As ever, if you wish to comment on this message, or the competition in general, you can do so through our contact page.

    Regards,

    Danny.

New white ones are almost as powerful, just don't have the Aluminium body, the LED Backlit screen and multi-touch trackpad. They do have firewire though.

I hate the flu. We worked in an extended care unit in Dec/07 and I ended up with the flu for about 3 weeks. It was just a vicious cycle in between the patients, staff and us painters. At the same time another ward was in lockdown mode due to the Norwalk virus.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 07:11

drivers? For Spain 7 or 8. Haven’t decided yet? But I was hoping that when it goes well the first half of the season I wouldn’t have to think too much about the second because I am rich enough to just buy the top 12 drivers or sth like that and be UNBEATABLE *evil laughter*

i think I've still got 6 (i really should go check). I've kind of forgotten who they are, but I'm sure I have Kubica because I seem to get angry at him each week for no other reason...He'll get better...honest...

I've still got six and the only disappointment is Kubica. However, from my Stats (see drop.io) on average he still scores more than he is worth and I think BMW will get better from Spain onwards, so I'll keep him ;)

  • Kathi01/05/2009 at 07:19

However, from my Stats (see drop.io)

    About that:

How about separate stats for wet and dry races?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 07:22

    Sure!

(What constitues a wet race though? I think we should define it...)

I've kept him since Australia because I've been somewhat convinced he'll get better. but now I'm just over him! The problem is, as soon as i remove him, he'll win (that's the fun part of this game) and also, I spend so little time paying attention to FR, i just keep forgetting to remove him anyway.

  • Scott in Italy01/05/2009 at 07:31

    the appearance of water?

Don't get smart! I mean, is it when the drivers have to change to intermediates, or something else such as precipitation (no matter how mild)?

  • Scott in Italy01/05/2009 at 07:34

Can you remove him then please, because I plan on keeping him ;)

I don't think I'm any threat to you!

That's not the point - I want him to score well and if it takes you removing him, then please do not hesitate!

  • Amy01/05/2009 at 07:37

I shall never have anywhere 9 drivers so that won't affect me, but the other rule will since I have a few teams with a whole lot of spare change, such as the team that only has 4 Red Bull drivers.

  • Scott in Italy01/05/2009 at 07:38

I know what people meant, I was just spicing up the discussion for the morning. I hear it got a little hot yesterday..hmmm. i missed that.

I think use of inters is a perfect definition

aah. i'm having a slow morning. i get you now. i'll see what i can do. just realised i'll be away next weekend so i'll have to do switches before tuesday - i'll never remember ! so in conclusion, kubica will stay and you won't go well ;)

  • Jackie01/05/2009 at 07:46

I shall have to have a serious thunk about changing my drivers for Spain, Kathi showed the way to get the extra points is to have 7 drivers .. hmmm

  • Amy01/05/2009 at 07:50

    20Million?

ugh once again I read something incredibly wrong, oops!

I'm still thinking about 8 but I have to sell Button for that. And that's only be a good decision if he's not winning, taking pole or has the fastest lap.

  • Kathi01/05/2009 at 08:02

I shall have to have a serious think about changing my drivers for Spain

    whom would you drop?

  • Scott Woodwiss01/05/2009 at 08:05

    Morning all

Will just say very quickly - R.I.P Ayrton. That is all on that subject.

I'm intrigued by these new FR changes. Are the prices going to change accordingly so that if people wanted to, they can have 9 drivers?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:06

I shall have to have a serious thunk about changing my drivers for Spain, Kathi showed the way to get the extra points is to have 7 drivers .. hmmm

I have 6 drivers and no money left... Seems to have worked out OK...

  • Christine01/05/2009 at 08:06

I'm intrigued by these new FR changes. Are the prices going to change accordingly so that if people wanted to, they can have 9 drivers?

I don't think it affects the prices at all, it's just a cap.

I know what people meant, I was just spicing up the discussion for the morning. I hear it got a little hot yesterday..hmmm. i missed that.

There is something in the rules, which I can't quite remember which defines it as a wet race. The FIA then remove the restriction that says you have to use both kinds of dry tyres.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:08

I know what people meant, I was just spicing up the discussion for the morning. I hear it got a little hot yesterday..hmmm. i missed that.

Yeah about thatt... I disagree that it would have turned into a slanging match, I think that Mr & Mrs C were keen to nip it in the bud, even if it was a bit heavy handed. The problem was that yesterday two contentious topics came to a head in a kind of perfect storm of anger and passion which spilled over into the comments.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/05/2009 at 08:09

I don't think it affects the prices at all, it's just a cap.

I see. Mind you, I reckon someone would have to get extremely lucky on the values to be able to afford 9 drivers.

I wonder if for next season, the starting budget will be increased to accomodate it?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:09

There is something in the rules, which I can't quite remember which defines it as a wet race. The FIA then remove the restriction that says you have to use both kinds of dry tyres.

That's what I was fishing for. Alia, can you help? I know it's academic for races past, but for future races it could be useful...

  • Kathi01/05/2009 at 08:11

I see. Mind you, I reckon someone would have to get extremely lucky on the values to be able to afford 9 drivers.

I could afford 11 drivers if I wanted.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/05/2009 at 08:12

I could afford 11 drivers if I wanted.

Fair enough. But think of us mere mortals who can only afford 4 or 5 when you win the league ;)

  • Christine01/05/2009 at 08:17

Yeah about thatt... I disagree that it would have turned into a slanging match, I think that Mr & Mrs C were keen to nip it in the bud, even if it was a bit heavy handed.

Gavin, it already was turning into a slanging match. I understand that you weren't happy about being singled out for moderation, but the comment policy is there for a reason.

The rules were introduced for you mere mortals. It restricts the top teams and gives you a chance to catch up.

I can't believe they've allowed two tiers to emerge in the fantasy league. This is a budget cap!

    It's sooo realistic :)

I'd really like it if we could just move on.

To some extent you were just keeping the conversation trucking on. And perhaps it's best we all don't fall into that trap again. So you were being moderated as much as the subject was because it was incendiary.

I'm sorry to bring it up again - I would like to move on too and I don't mind if you delete the comments from this thread. I hope that's OK, I don't want to cause trouble, I really don't!

I know it's Friday... We need some cars going around!

  • Alex Andronov01/05/2009 at 08:28

    Aha... Wet tires rule is:

Unless he has used wet or extreme-weather tyres during the race, each driver must use at least one set of each specification of dry-weather tyres during the race.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:31

Yep. But that seems too open - for example had it not rained in Malaysia and Kimi had still switched to wets when he did, that would have been a dry race.

A bad example but you get my point.

  • Alex Andronov01/05/2009 at 08:34

A bad example but you get my point.

Yeah it's a bit tricky... During practice the session has to be declared wet by the race director. But it doesn't seem that they do the same thing for the race.

  • Christine01/05/2009 at 08:43

Yep. But that seems too open - for example had it not rained in Malaysia and Kimi had still switched to wets when he did, that would have been a dry race.

Maybe it should be more than a certain number of drivers making the switch. More than five, maybe. You probably wouldn't find three teams making the same mistakes as Ferrari :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:46

If this is still for the FR statistics - the thought behind it is to determine if there are drivers that are better/worse if it's a wet race. So it would make sense to set the limit to something like at least ? laps in the wet so they can show their skill/Piquetness

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/05/2009 at 08:53

I was wondering whether it should go alongside "a little bit Piquet" in the dictionary.

Sadly, my first thought was to put in some laps for the GRID contest. It's no wonder I'm so pale! I might see if anyone fancies a trip to a beer garden later though.

I guess the only good thing about one person dominating is when they are finally beaten.

To watch Alonso get the better of Schumi was thrilling.

Best tennis moment of my life is driving home from British GP last year listening to Nadal beat Federer.

Oh yes, one of the best ever matches! I watched the last hour or so, and I loved it!

I think the Schumi equivalent was Imola 2005, when Alonso held him off until the end...

Normally they say to work hard and then take a break with a walk, but as we live in the UK, it's best to soak up the sun when you can :)

  • Stuart C01/05/2009 at 10:27

    Very good.

    Seconded.

I remember that afternoon very clearly. I was at university in Canterbury and three of us were watching the race on a 14-inch portable TV. When the crash happened I had a queasy sensation in my stomach that the outcome wouldn't be a happy one. There was total confusion for what seemed like an age after the race was stopped – you can imagine the internet lighting up like a christmas tree if liveblogging and commenting was around in those days.

There were interminable helicopter shots of the medical staff gathered round the car. It was clear, then, because he wasn't moving and they weren't trying to move him, that the accident had been fatal. One of my housemates kept saying, "I'm sure I can see blood." It was a very grim, depressing Sunday afternoon.

I think the response is positive, except Kathi who wanted to buy every single driver possible so she can keep her lead at the top of our league :)

  • Scott Woodwiss01/05/2009 at 10:31

There were interminable helicopter shots of the medical staff gathered round the car. It was clear, then, because he wasn't moving and they weren't trying to move him, that the accident had been fatal. One of my housemates kept saying, "I'm sure I can see blood." It was a very grim, depressing Sunday afternoon.

I can remember where I was when it happened, but don't remember seeing the accident. I was at my Auntie Jo's and my dad came from work there. Mum said to him "There's been a really bad accident". Dad's instant reaction was "It's Senna, isn't it?"

He actually had the privilege of meeting him once when he was in Norfolk for a while and has a signed picture of his Lotus kept safe somewhere in a cardboard tube.

I remember that afternoon very clearly..

So do I. I remember everything so clearly though. I remember the awful accident with Lehto at the start, the restart and then the accident. As I hadn't seen much F1 at that point I thought he was going to be OK. I was just a boy, and I refused to accept what happened. The rest of the race was a nightmare and I think a mechanic got injured. You could tell the atmosphere was bad but I thought it was because of what happened to Ratzenberger.

After the race, We went to the park, it was a lovely summer's day. I came back, turned on the teletext, saw the headline, and just cried. My Mum and Dad turned to me and said that they kinda knew he was dead but didn't want to tell me. I was devastated and couldn't believe how it could have happened. For days I was down about it, and I couldn't understand what I felt. But time heals, F1 is safer and we all have moved on. Ayrton was one of the best and his passing marked the end of an era.

Roland's accident was just chilling. The really disturbing moment is when you see how he is once the car comes to a halt...

Sadly, I think that race is probably my first F1 memory. Or at least, my mom being upset and me not really understanding why.

Ah yes – Alboreto lost a wheel exiting the pits and it hit someone. Very nasty.

There is a piece by Annie Bradshaw (Williams press office at the time) in this month's F1R describing the events of the weekend from the team's perspective.

Hopefully if they make the mods they plan for MotoGP it should be enough, at least as a stopgap.

Ditto. I woke up to the news and was a mess for days. Like Stuart, I was at university and of an age where my passion for F1 seemed to rise above everything else. I can count on one hand the number of times that I have been inside a church, but I sat for hours on a cold hard pew that night.

Dunno, they include a new corner (The Arrow)

The thing I hate the most on days like today is it is always a harsh reminder that it could happen again, and that makes me feel sick to my stomach. It's been a long time so people feel safe, but I'm sure they felt like that in '94 as well, because it had been a long time then too.

  • Jeremy01/05/2009 at 10:59

The same principles apply out of the race car as in it: do all you can to understand and minimise the risks, then just get on with it.

  • me01/05/2009 at 10:59

nope, never, uh-uh, oh no, not a chance, over my dea... oh, all right then.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/05/2009 at 11:00

You do know this "new layout" for Silverstone was originally going to be the new layout for F1 (or something similar). And anyway, it's just a re-hash with parts of the South and National circuits thrown in. Nothing special.

  • Amy01/05/2009 at 11:00

LDM reminds me of our cats. If you so much as move one of the chairs in the dining room a few centimetres to the left or right, the next time one of the cats walks in he or she will do a double-take, as if to say, "You've changed things! How dare you! Put it back where it was!"

it got 13,000 views in 4 days before FOM had it taken down

Do they still do that? It must be like that fairground game where you have to whack the gophers over the head with a stick.

I love this quote by Jenson on the interview in F1R

"I don't want people to get bored of this team through over exposure"

Sadly something I personally have been a bit worried about with a lot of fans :(

no mocks today. Just textiles and ict lessons, and as a prefect i had to help with the inter house, school science comp. it was really strange this year. all the questions where projected onto the screen in the hall and each person had like a mini hand held device which they answered the questions on. Then depending on the mean average of correct answers from each house their 'racing car' would move a certain distance round a track. The winning house was the one to cross the line first after like 5 laps. :s

It comes with quite a good lens but you'll need more zoom than the standard one offers. This one is very good for the money:-

It comes with quite a good lens but you'll need more zoom than the standard one offers.

I'd also add the £60 50mm f1.8 - not the best built of lenses, but a great one to use as a general out and about lens.

Although - the most important thing is to find a camera body that you are comfortable using that has the lenses you need available.

Once you buy a camera you tend to be tied into a cerain lens system.

  • me01/05/2009 at 14:36

don't have it too hand. eos450 i think.

however. keep in mind that de la rosa was snapped whilst being towed by a people carrier and at close range.

i wouldn't use it as a basis for shooting f1 cars at their intended speed.

  • Amy01/05/2009 at 14:37

    Amy,

You would be wise make friends with the good people at www.mactalk.com.au especially Anthony - the guy who runs it. Lot's of photography (and Mac) experts there based in Melbourne. Good podcast if you don't mind the language and happen to like a relaxed (beer drinking) style.

Also, Shaun(?) who runs www.ozphotowrap.com.au would be a good contact as well seeing as he is an F1 nut.

That's true. You can't use Canon EF-S lenses with a non-EF-S camera, although you can use EF lenses with an EF-S body.

i wouldn’t use it as a basis for shooting f1 cars at their intended speed.

The 55-250 can be flaky in low light but I managed to do this with it:-

What are the emerging technologies in digital cameras these days? GPS and HD video? Out of Amy's price range no doubt but interesting to hear about whether they are worthwhile waiting/spending for.

Someone recommended that I take a single shot with the iPhone to get GPS co-ordinates before proceeding to take proper photos with DSLR and then marry the information up in iPhoto/Aperture.

I shall see you all in approx. 9 hours after sleep. Happy Birthday to who/whatever :-)

all the photos i have taken with my phone have gps co-ords attached, but I really don't see the point in them. Why does it matter where they were taken, surely I already know seeing as how I was there? Or is there more to it that escapes me seeing as how I'm not a photography nut?

The new Canon 500D *one above entry level* shoots full HD footage.

Looks pretty good quality as well.

The problem I have is that the low end Canon cameras are too small. They need the battery grip to make them a sensible size.

Possibly, possibly not. Only thing is to go to a photography shop and try them.

They 300D was a good size, they then shrunk then considerably for the 400D and above.

If I was starting from scratch again, I'd have to go with Nikon.

Definitely an angle worth pursuing. They're trying very hard to break Canon's semi-monopoly in the sports market, and everything I've read about their products at our sort of level (£500-ish) has been good.

serious? my mind has been blown.

For more than a century, mathematicians searched in vain for a physical surface with hyperbolic geometry. Starting in the 1950s, they began to suggest possibilities for constructing such surfaces. Eventually, in 1997, Daina Taimina, a mathematician at Cornell University, made the first useable physical model of the hyperbolic — a feat many mathematicians had believed was impossible — using, of all things, crochet.

They had an exhibition of these at the crafts council (pentonville road) a few years back - a PhD candidate (3d design) from my old uni had some stuff in it. There are scary numbers of peeps with maths Alevels lurking in universities in the 'artistic' fields (great at parties though when you can out intellectualise the final year mathematicians from the 'other' older university and leave them swearing never to think that those from the 'former poly' down the road are there because they couldn't go 'red brick' ha!

As for putting Mr C's brain back together - I've got a darning needle somewhere, what colour thread do you need?

I've been to CCCU cant. as well though (and that is a *really* good place for nurking the 'bright kids' especially if you are in your 20's with a small child and recently ran away from the high-powered sort of media stuff that they are all desperately training for, lol)

actually i might have to try this line on steven later:

"Personally I'd quite like it if the universe were infinite and turned out to be hyperbolic. "

  • Alex Andronov01/05/2009 at 17:16

Finally bringing this all back to the point is this from the article:

Apart from professional geometers, is there anyone else today who is affected by contemporary geometrical developments?

DT: Lots of other mathematicians are becoming interested in geometry to help with their own fields. Statisticians are especially interested.

DH: Statisticians often work with multi-dimensional spaces. They might have 123 dimensions of data they need to analyze, but in the end it's a geometric object they are studying. Another place is in the movies. Pixar has some very good geometers working for them. Modeling fabric is one place where you need to have an understanding of curved space to simulate the drape of cloth and ruffles. Another example is in modeling skin. Some geometers are working on the problem of how to put a textured surface, which is already a geometric object, over an underlying structure, which is another geometric object. Auto industry engineers are also very interested in differential geometry, so they can design cars where the air flows smoothly around them, and acoustical engineers use my book on differential geometry to solve problems of sound design in concert halls.

A quick look at the academic backgrounds of some of those in race teams (not just in the aerodynamic bits) is quite illuminating :-) It was one of the things that an old maths lecturer of mine used to hold up as something you would be advised to do maths and music Alevels towards :-) (lovely man, got the whole college timetable changed so that I could do that when the head of academic studies couldn't understand that putting the two in the same timetable slot lost them students)

I thought so! In F1 Racing Williams are in support of it

williams are in support of the budget cap. they are not in favour of a two tier system.

they just want a budget cap.

I'll tell you this the video doesn't work on an iPhone :(

My guess is that on the move at speed the iPhone will be better as the phone moves with your hands.

Oh yes - looovvveeee custard. Got to be the cornflour/fluid sort to be truly crazy though, egg sort just not the same (although it thickens fine, lol, thinking of which we ended up with a surfeit of eggs so although Andy doesn't know it yet, he's going to be making custard (to become ice cream) and meringes for him and DD1 to eat at some point tomorrow :-) )

    hey ya, how was bahrain?

Well the obvious answer would be hot... extremely hot...

But also very interesting with some really excellent parts to it...

It was by far the most "social" race I have been to with loads of people coming out from Manama to go to a big local party...

In the main merchandising area behind the main grandstand there was two stages... for dancers and musicians... and other attractions (apart from the record attempt at holding breath under water) like a falconer, jugglers, Bernie's F1 cars, a childs driving course, and the air conditioned Gulf Air Club (a life saver)... also loads of cushions and carpets to lounge on ...

  • littlepurplegoth01/05/2009 at 18:27

I'd think so if you could crochet generally :-)

Yep. But that seems too open - for example had it not rained in Malaysia and Kimi had still switched to wets when he did, that would have been a dry race.

In another prediction game I am involved in a wet race is defined as any race where the live timing weather shows at least one lap as wet.

A totally random way to have after work drinks (which started with dried squid nibbles and proper Russian vodka) ;)

  • me01/05/2009 at 20:15

back here with rose and a *slightly* overdone pizza (mushroom, scheese and asparagus :-) ) Andy is currently dressing his (not sure with what, lol) and will be along shortly

    Hehe.

    Evening all.

Noticed the camera messages, only one Nikon mention? Boo.

Nikon D60 or D90 are pretty good and cost around the same as the Canon equivalents. D90 does video too. There's also the new D5000.

F1Wolf uses an older Nikon camera and seems to do OK :)

My advice is always to try cameras out in a shop, look at the position of the controls, weight and menus, then pick the one you like better.

I went Nikon back in 2004 because the D70 had a better shutter sound compared to the Canon 300D as well as a lens that wasn't plasticky and looked like it might last more than 10 minutes.

    No it's not

Wikipedia says otherwise. Proper egg custard is thixotropic. Custard powder custard is inversly thixotropic under the right cnditions. So you're both correct.

  • Steven Roy01/05/2009 at 21:06

you lot could really put a man off his custard.

That is a very cool property. Thixotropic means it only flows under pressure like screen printing ink which will sit on a screen all day without going through the mesh untill pressure is applied. Custard though is inversely thixotropic which means it flows unless it is under pressure. As a result if you fill a swimming pool with custard you could run along the op of it. Once your speed dropped so that your feet weren't generating enough pressure you would sink in it.

  • me01/05/2009 at 21:06

that was on QI once... i remember seeing someone walking on a swimming pool full of custard...

    Braniac did it with custard.

Mythbusters also did it with cornstarch held in solution.

I thought you had to run to generate the pressure. Maybe it depends how thick the custard is. I have seen a demo where someone shoved their finger in custard then slapped their hand down on it to prove that the custard would resist the force.

  • Alex Andronov01/05/2009 at 21:16

    No it's not

Well to be precise it is thixotropic. Uncooked custard (ie. custard mixed with cold water is inversely thixotropic). I think... I should probably check these things.

  • Dom01/05/2009 at 21:17

Why is everyone talking about custard?

  • Pat W01/05/2009 at 21:17

Laptop? notebook and pencil and type it up later?

Don't have a laptop and there is too much paperwork to carry around with me.

There is also the issue of cost given the events with my car today.

he could have been running, i just remember him sinking when he stopped moving.

Depends on how heavy you are and the ratios you are presenting. Do it in stilettos and be over 12 stone and you can walk as long as its a 'proper pace' not a dawdle...

  • Lukeh01/05/2009 at 21:17

I'll be homest with you guys, I just boil custard in a pot then chuck it on some cake or something. It's never come to mind if it's throxypoxic or inversely majistic or stuff, it just makes for a tasty dessert!

Ah, true. Was just trying to give you an excuse or two.

  • Alex Andronov01/05/2009 at 21:18

Wikipedia says otherwise. Proper egg custard is thixotropic. Custard powder custard is inversly thixotropic under the right cnditions. So you're both correct.

Aha thanks Andy! Wikipedia to the rescue :)

  • Christine01/05/2009 at 21:19

If you look at picture 20 he is high up as well. My guess is that he had to be that high up to feel confident enough to drive the car. He is a rally driver and used to having a good view. He expects to be able to read the road and interpret what he sees whereas an F1 driver or any circuit later knows that he has done x number of laps so knows what to expect. The lack of information from the normal racing seat position can be a bit spooky.

Gavin’s miles away in Denmark. Didn’t stop him going to London for the Science meetup.

wasn’t he already in london?… he didn’t come just for the meet up.

    Scott,

I asked if we could meet up in London because I had already planned a holiday there. It's nice of you to think I am dedicated enough to come all the way from Denmark just for the Sidepodmeetup, but TBH that sounds like the sort of thing one would do if one owned a private jet!

  • Alianora La Canta02/05/2009 at 23:44

There is something in the rules, which I can’t quite remember which defines it as a wet race. The FIA then remove the restriction that says you have to use both kinds of dry tyres.

    That’s what I was fishing for. Alia, can you help? I know it’s academic for races past, but for future races it could be useful… {Comment #135}

If Page 3 of the Live Timing screen says a race is wet at any point between the lights going out and the chequered flag being waved, it's a wet race.

Still, I suppose they have to turn a coin for providing a service.

    Absolutely. I just can’t believe it’s worth $20 to anyone to get rid of them. {Comment #168}

I would recommend my wiki service (Mindtouch Deki Wiki) because that's free, but there are some basic flaws - primarily that using links rather than the sidebar to navigate through the wiki makes it look like the destination page has nothing on it.

  • Steven Roy02/05/2009 at 23:49

    Excuse me while I go and feel ashamed of myself. {Comment #252}

Not to worry - there are probably a load of people who mis-spell Kovalainen's first name and find your clip at the top of their searches. Also, it's not a bad way of missing out on the FOM brigade...

I remember seeing "Baguette on a roll" once last year (forget which series Bertrand was in, but apparently he was doing quite well in it!)
