Ahh, I have never been so happy for a Friday to appear. Firstly, I think we all survived April Fool's Day unscathed. I spotted a couple of amusing things but mostly it was all quite annoying. Secondly, it's Free Practice Factbyte Factbox day! Yay! And thirdly, it's been such a stressful week, I'm glad it's a long weekend. I was too tired to think of things for the daily so I asked for help in the comments. This is what we came up with.

  • Pat's working on a blog post but is a bit too tired to finish it off. Keep an eye on I Watch Too Much Racing for when it does appear though.
  • Similarly, RG was right in the middle of something, but managed to get it finished in time for a direct plug: The Malaysian Monsoons.
  • Mr C wants a plug for his awesome Joe show, which by the way, Neil listened to while he was in the bath. A good show for relaxing to, clearly.
  • Jon is in the midst of editing a preview show, and although I won't finish it for him, I will plug the site where it will appear: The Feeder Series.
  • Steven wants a plug for Scarbs who has three new posts: A Malaysia preview, a piece on Red Bull's ride height control and a great pic of a Sauber wing just as it parts company with the car
  • A couple of people wanted a shoutout for Doctor Who as well, which returns to our screens on Saturday. It's fair to say we're quite excited about it, in which case I will forgive the April Fool from Lukeh: Things You May Not Know About the New Doctor if only because there's a pink TARDIS in there.
  • Mr C also wanted me to share this Twitpic from Laia Ferrer who had some fun and games with the boys from Hispania. I notice that this might be the first time Senna doesn't have his blue hat on.
  • Finally, Lou wanted a quick shout out for something Button related (shock, horror!). The defending champ has a Johnnie Walker related podcast, which you can listen to here, but you have to go through an age barrier before you get there.

That should do it for now. Something a little bit different for a Friday. We'll be along later today with threads, live comments and results galore, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

    oops, misquote.

    Ta for the plug :)

I've got two brewing and a possible third, I'll finish them during Friday's day off!

I'm trying to work out why good media coverage is different and why it is, and what that means in a motorsport context.

Watch a BBC broadcast of F1, then watch a Speed. Seriously, those folks at Speed make Legard sound like Marv Albert.

    Absolutely no idea ;)

Gotcha. Well he's a legendary broadcaster in the states. His calls during a basketball game is amazing. This is how bad Speed TV is, that Legard sounds amazing compared to them.

Honestly, when the lights go out, you cant even tell the race has started with Speed TV, thats how bad they call the event. They dont get into it very well. You can get more emotion by reading the telemetry from the F1 phone app.

    As you are the only person around, you can answer this question;

What part does the internet play in your Motorsport enjoyment and experience? and what part do you want the internet to play in your motorsport enjoymen and experience?

  • Jim Newman02/04/2010 at 00:53

What part does the internet play in your Motorsport enjoyment and experience? and what part do you want the internet to play in your motorsport enjoymen and experience?

The internet plays a massive part in my motorsport enjoyment. I'm an avid amateur racer, attending track-days almost every weekend. The internet has revolutionized the way I learn about events, meet folks who go to them and trade information on driving style and vehicle configurations/tuning. It's because of the internet that I can compete in three different race series and have a race schedule of 35+ events this year.

What more could I ask of the internet? Hmm... Non-regional BBC broadcasts of F1.

Very much so. Earlier I posted a pic of some racing tires I picked up today. The way I was able to acquire them was because I saw them for sale on craigslist.com. Found the posting, called up the person and went and picked them up immediately.

And you posted a picture of them on here? I mean, how cool is that!!

I used to race 10th scale radio controlled cars at a regional and national level (oh yeah im cool) and i used to test on a Saturday before the meeting on a sunday, but not being the amazing technologically minded guy that i wish i was, i could go on the manufacturers website, download a set up of the winning guy from the last meeting, find out what springs, dampers, camber, caster, toe, weight distribution, aero, wings etc etc the guy who won had and id be a step in the right direction.

i like how everything is so accessable for the club guy, i know alot about the vast majority of national circuit championships because of the internet and that took me 2 years of casual browsing?

Latvala makes a mistake on SS10. Loeb now breathing down his neck - just 4.7s behind. And with Mikko out, he may just be able to expand his championship lead bigtime this weekend...

Kimi is doing well. Latvala's lead is being wiped out to. I guess road sweeping is costing him more than I expected

now all Kimi needs to do is to keep it on the road... ;)

As for Latvala, he lost most of his lead on SS10, so I suspect it's a driving error. This is one of his few chances to win with Mikko not a factor, so he can't afford to waste it.

  • Kathi02/04/2010 at 09:52

As for Latvala, he lost most of his lead on SS10.

SS10 was over 40km and he was first on the road. No driving error just a lot of dust he cleaned away for the others

  • Alex Andronov02/04/2010 at 10:16

oops I entered twice again. I don't like your system!

Don't worry you haven't really entered twice this time... You can enter as many times as you like and it will only take the latest one (as long as you don't change your e-mail address which I think you did before).

It does look like you've entered twice if you've done it on the same page. But if you refresh it will fix itself.

  • Alex Andronov02/04/2010 at 10:16

I just noticed neither of them are right. Arrrgh I fail.

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 12:43

no you have to change it, that used to mess with my head

Ah got it. I changed it to London time so it should now do it itself...

  • Paul02/04/2010 at 12:47

By the way, we're going to have the silly outboard mirrors for another race yet, because their ban has been delayed until Spain.

red bull and Ferrari don't have time to change mirrors? HA! I bet they change lots of other things

  • Alianora La Canta02/04/2010 at 12:50

red bull and Ferrari don't have time to change mirrors? HA! I bet they change lots of other things

They might, but it said "several teams". Note that Hispania and Sauber are among the teams that must move their mirrors - though I am sure Ferrari and Red Bull will maximise the advantage conferred by the delay.

  • lou02/04/2010 at 12:53

Oh yea, was gonna say. I have had zero response to the call for any kind of Fantasy Racers reminder shoutouts, and it doesn't seem like the reminder threads are particularly useful, so I think I'll scrap them, and we can concentrate all FR talk on the post-race threads.

She was on a phone call saying her email address, and I happened to be standing behind her. I tapped her on the shoulder and said I was planning on going to her breakfast.

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 16:16

Are there enough potentials to make a second booking, another 4 - 6 I guess?

I called the day before yesterday and there were still 2 available. I reserved another one a couple of hours ago but haven't heard back yet.

There isn't much information on the English page. I will try to work my way through the Dutch. If the deluxe version isn't what we have then the mobile home looks like this

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 16:20

    Well, I'm gonna say yes

Can you email me some deposit/payment details and I'll see if I can rustle up some interest with Giggles and/or others

"I'm thinking just of the built quality, the design quality, the refinement of the design. I think it's missing a lot of tricks that would be taken for granted by anybody in the pitlane now."

i think maybe geoff had higher expectation of the HRT.

    have fun :)

  • Kathi02/04/2010 at 16:58

Nice. Looks very similar to one I stayed in near Montpellier, slightly bigger in fact. That was comfortable.

I had expected something more basic. This looks better than by flat.

  • RG02/04/2010 at 16:59

i think maybe geoff had higher expectation of the HRT.

Me and Geoff are quite different. I expected them to be miles behind (well, even more miles behind than now) and retiring every race.

    Have fun Bassano

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 17:00

    y'eeeeouch: http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/82630

    That's harsh. Bye bye Geoff.

  • me02/04/2010 at 17:01

    That's harsh. Bye bye Geoff.

maybe what they need is a dose of honesty in order that they might purchase the toyota chassis designs ;)

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 17:03

maybe what they need is a dose of honesty in order that they might purchase the toyota chassis designs ;)

But there's no guarantee the Toyota's any good. ;)

Stefan GP may have just been bigging it up to get sponsorship. Shame they never actually ran it.

  • me02/04/2010 at 17:03

But there's no guarantee the Toyota's any good. ;)

it's a proper f1 car. it's not an f3 car, which is likely what HRT have now.

  • Jon Waldock02/04/2010 at 17:05

it's a proper f1 car. it's not an f3 car, which is likely what HRT have now.

First f1 race was at Bahrain, if they had used their car in GP2 Asia qualifying they would have got pole by a couple of tenth, but lest us not forget, that they used the old GP2 car in the Asia series so the HRT is slower than a current GP2 car!

oh and for the record, F3 cars are alot nicer looking :P

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 17:06

it's a proper f1 car. it's not an f3 car, which is likely what HRT have now.

LOL, you're so optimistic about that Dallara, aren'tcha! :D

In all honesty, they need money and quick development. Lotus will be the first new team to get the first point(s), and they have a development programme in force. HRT have sweet FA in terms of development except the following instruction to their 2 drivers:

    "get mileage on the car!"

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 17:06

I read that just now as well. While I sympathise, I kind of wonder why he expected anything else. It was a car designed to a budget and it was delayed multiple times.

It's HRT's fault, i honestly think if Dallara had got all the money that they should have they would have atleast been up with the other new teams

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 17:07

it's a proper f1 car. it's not an f3 car, which is likely what HRT have now.

I'm a little surprised they didn't do a 'grown up' GP2 car. GP2 cars are only a couple of seconds behind HRT's current pace.

  • me02/04/2010 at 17:07

true. but what's the benefit of being so outspoken? it's an odd strategy for promotion.

Oh totally, I agree with that. Had they got the money to develop the car first time, they wouldn't nearly be in so much excrement with a bad car.

Sounds like negotiations with Dallara are dragging and he's threatening to do it himself.

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 17:10

It's HRT's fault, i honestly think if Dallara had got all the money that they should have they would have atleast been up with the other new teams

It was HRT's fault when they were Campos. I'm not sure whether to blame Adrian or not, but I agree, if Dallara hadn't been delayed they'd have a better sorted chassis. I remember hearing talk they'd stopped work in Jan.

  • Jon Waldock02/04/2010 at 17:14

if Dallara hadn't been delayed they'd have a better sorted

chassis. I remember hearing talk they'd stopped work in Jan.

they've effectively made a gp2 car with a smaller engine. it annoys me that they bring Dallara down in all of this

I keep telling myself not to think about it. Not bothered at all about transport, loads of ways to get there. Friday will be a good day to practice shots because you can explore the track and get lots of angles.

Do you remember we thought about shouting "NO FRANCK, DON'T DO IT!" :D

Although on second thoughts, some single seater action should do him good. Essentially it's the same kind of car as the last Champ Car, with a ruddy great V12 stuck in it. Franck came 2nd in the last ever CC race at Long Beach too.

  • lou02/04/2010 at 19:00

I thought the launch was bad, I can only hope it's the one Rubens trashed in Singapore

tell me they have repainted the camera bar thing and it's not the car that won JB won the championship in....

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 19:07

tell me they have repainted the camera bar thing and it's not the car that won JB won the championship in....

There's no reason to suggest they did anything to it. It could be the same one they used pre-season.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 19:27

If I can work it, I'll try and get someone to hand me a beer as soon as I step off the plane.

I'm sure I could arrange that

    If anyone can... ;)

  • lou02/04/2010 at 19:27

There's no reason to suggest they did anything to it. It could be the same one they used pre-season.

as in the '09 pre season, or the 2010 pre season?...

    Evening sir.

    I really over-chillied my pasta

I anticipated weak chillis, so chucked in 3 instead of the usual, open pack - try with two to assess

    Whoo Eeeeh!

Oh yes, I'm quite familiar with the crazies that get in line for apple products, being married to someone who got inline for the iPhone 3G. I relieved her in said line, and I'm the one that got to buy them!

mercedes are stupid. If it is another Brawn... then i hope they've just painted over Rubens' 2 cars and not Jenson's car...

  • Steven Roy02/04/2010 at 19:54

mercedes are stupid. If it is another Brawn... then i hope they've just painted over Rubens' 2 cars and not Jenson's car...

They have lots of sets of bodywork so painting one doesn't make much difference

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 19:55

Oh FFS. Mercedes are determined to airbrush Brawn from history aren't they?

[resists the obvious and tasteless quip]

  • lou02/04/2010 at 19:55

They have lots of sets of bodywork so painting one doesn't make much difference

it does... they are painting over a legend of a car and pretending it is something it is not... :( the brawn was awesome.. and pretty and the mercedes isn't.

  • Adie02/04/2010 at 19:59

If they're only painting over spare bodywork it's not so much of an issue.

However, the blatent disregard for the teams' history is very sad.

I agree. I think he let himself down a bit a Williams, they said he didn't apply himself fully which is probably a fair assessment, and possibly because he didn't have an experienced teammate to bounce off of.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 20:17

Andi Zuber is Austrian but races under a UAE license now.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 20:21

Yes... but there were times when Rubens made him work for it :)

We don't like to talk about the other times

  • lou02/04/2010 at 20:21

He has only lost to a team mate in all sessions twice in his career and one of those was Nico in Bahrain

    wow!

  • me02/04/2010 at 20:21

    Boo, i thought it'd count :)

    well... kinda...

    ?

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 20:22

Yes... but there were times when Rubens made him work for it :)

Can you imagine the contract though -

17a) The Driver will be obliged to attempt to drive faster than all other drivers(*)

    (*) Except Michael Schumacher

I thought it was something like "the driver will obey the instruction of the team"... and the team then instructed him to lose

    Now it isn't

    But Finnish still is

  • Andy Taylor02/04/2010 at 20:23

I thought it was something like "the driver will obey the instruction of the team"... and the team then instructed him to lose

I believe Piquet Jr had a similar clause in his contract ;)

I see your point but he doesn't need to speak the language to be a product of his genes

    That is true

  • lou02/04/2010 at 20:24

    ?

how to explain this without seeming odd...

The other day i had a conversation the other day with Lukeh, and he ended it by saying 'touché'. I then got all upset because people always aim the 'touché' at me, and i never get to say it/ end a convo with it. So using it just then was a minor victory.

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 20:25

Well good news, I predicted Nico for the win in Alex's pole poll thingy.

Ah, must enter the pole poll! Will do it now.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 20:25

I then got all upset because people always aim the 'touché' at me, and i never get to say it/ end a convo with it.

I just got a flashback of Joey mis-using 'air quotes' :)

Quick announcement while I remember, before I go into a drunken stupor.

I am planning to steward a local air festival. Normally I get paid for this, however since I can take the time off work to do it and get paid for that instead, I'll be donating my fee to charity.

The Bournemouth Air Festival was ace.

I was on my parents' boat watching, and the planes basically did all their flying above us.

I don't think I'll ever forget the noise of the Vulcan Bomber climbing on full afterburner directly above me. I'm surprised my ears and eyes didn't bleed it was so loud.

Sounds good. I stood at the end of the runway for the Yeovilton Air Day a couple of years ago along with a few others who'd found their way there (and thus not paid the silly price to get into the main bit). That was rather good.... mad F18 pilot buzzing over you, helicopters making you duck...

  • RG02/04/2010 at 21:57

7 flights in a row cancelled for various reasons! And I had to sit opposite Matt Le Tissier.

I actually want to pat you on the back for putting up with that.

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 21:57

    Was it a Sea Harrier?

    No idea.

  • Adie02/04/2010 at 21:58

I actually want to pat you on the back for putting up with that.

The flight cancellations or Fat Le 'Tiss?

He was a right scruffy so and so too.

  • startledbunny02/04/2010 at 21:58

    Was it a Sea Harrier?

    it is now

  • lou02/04/2010 at 21:58

Like a big hate triangle :D

i don't get this hate thing... however being from the SE/ Kent it makes me pleased we don't have this :)

  • Jon Waldock02/04/2010 at 21:58

    Le Tiss.

i don't get this hate thing... however being from the SE/ Kent it makes me pleased we don't have this :)

It's all good natured. You just need to understand that all outsiders have 6 fingers on each hand and webbed feet that's all.

  • lou02/04/2010 at 21:59

It makes no sense, its just law.

    rriiiiiggght..

i was mildly disturbed by the usually normal fourstar getting irate at nothing much the other evening. football is odd.

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 22:00

    it is now

    badumtish.

  • RG02/04/2010 at 22:00

Football is the most fustrating and annoying sport that has ever existed.

i don't get this hate thing... however being from the SE/ Kent it makes me pleased we don't have this :)

Oh purleeeeze, you got Canterbury, Folkestone and Dover. If that's not a hate triangle, I dunno what is.

  • Jon Waldock02/04/2010 at 22:01

    Football's great.

    Home to Bradford tomorrow. Woo.

  • Pat W02/04/2010 at 22:01

i was mildly disturbed by the usually normal fourstar getting irate at nothing much the other evening. football is odd.

oooh it's a football thing?? i agree football is odd.

I think it started as a football thing and was then subsumed into the main conciousness of the respective cities, at least WRT Portsmouth/Southampton.

  • Steven Roy02/04/2010 at 22:01

oooh it's a football thing?? i agree football is odd.

The Portsmouth Southampton thing is about a dockers strike decades ago apparently

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 22:01

Football is the most fustrating and annoying sport that has ever existed.

You play it on a weekly basis. Your point being.....?

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 22:01

    I second that

  • RG02/04/2010 at 22:01

    Football's great.

Oh I love it, but it still is frustrating and annoying.

Though someone on my team comes from and supports Bradford, so, best of luck.

  • lou02/04/2010 at 22:02

Oh purleeeeze, you got Canterbury, Folkestone and Dover. If that's not a hate triangle, I dunno what is.

That's because you're too polite to broadcast your hatred for each other. :D

  • Steven Roy02/04/2010 at 22:03

Ah the Skates and Scummers. Long story that!

I worked in Chichester with a load of Portsmouth people. Never heard Skates before

  • startledbunny02/04/2010 at 22:03

how many rule changes has football had over the years?

  • Turkey Machine02/04/2010 at 22:03

No webbed feet, or extra fingers.

    That's Yarmouth in a nutshell....

  • Andy Taylor02/04/2010 at 22:03

How can a Harrier stall? It's generating lift from thrusters not wings

Harriers are very susceptible to side winds when hovering, so I'd imagine it's quite easy to lose control of one.

  • RG02/04/2010 at 22:03

You play it on a weekly basis. Your point being.....?

Easy 'It was never a damn penalty' followed by a lot of things said to the ref and ending up in a red card where the ref looks like an idiot.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 22:04

how many rule changes has football had over the years?

And has it improved the overtaking? NO!

  • Steven Roy02/04/2010 at 22:04

how many rule changes has football had over the years?

Football has referees who change the rules every 5 minutes

  • me02/04/2010 at 22:04

it is. what was all the fuss about harry redknapp then?

  • RG02/04/2010 at 22:05

Wolves v Portsmouth or Bahrain Grand Prix.

    Tough call.

  • Steven Roy02/04/2010 at 22:05

And has it improved the overtaking? NO!

And it has no relevance to normal people. Never in my life has someone stuck up a flag and said I was offside so how am I supposed to relate to football

  • littlepurplegoth02/04/2010 at 22:05

Must. Resist. Urge. To. Make. Lewd. Joke.

  • Adie02/04/2010 at 22:07

it is. what was all the fuss about harry redknapp then?

The two cities hate each other.

Harry managed Portsmouth, left to manage Southampton.

Portsmouth then hated him. Ironically Southampton got relegated, and he got his old job back at Portsmouth. Where, having relegated Southampton he was welcomed back as a saviour.

It's kind of like Alonso leaving McLaren for Ferrari mid season.

  • Bassano02/04/2010 at 22:07

    Yes, you must
