Can it really be Thursday already? Oh well, Thursday it is then. We are just one day away from seeing the brand new Yas Marina circuit in action, and I don't know about anyone else, but I am intrigued to see how that pit lane exit works out for everyone. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The team preparations for the weekend continue, with Toyota blogging about their build up to the final race of the season. Their new PUSH blog has some good thoughts and some nice pictures, so make sure you go over and have a poke around.
  • Meanwhile, I spent some time inspiring and/or bullying people into writing some blog posts yesterday, and James came up with not one but two posts. I like this one on liveries, in which he picks out some of his favourites. Team colours are always a popular topic - which are your favourites?
  • Back to Abu Dhabi, and Renault released a preview podcast yesterday. In the show, Alan Permane talks about how a team gets ready for a brand new track, and there are thoughts on the logistics of getting to Abu Dhabi as well.

That's all for now. Thursdays are rubbish, so I hope you are having a good day under the circumstances. As ever, I will see you in the comments.

A placement is a bit like being an intern

    Yankees down a run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dave in NZL29/10/2009 at 00:52

Isn't placement usually taken as part of school work, whereas an internship is usually teken after graduation? That's how it works around these parts at least.

  • Steven Roy29/10/2009 at 00:52

    Yankees down a run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Mere detail.

More importantly my stream switched to English

There are no interns in the UK as far as I am aware so they all count as placements

None of my friends have had to do it. But yeah, it's increasingly common here. I read a big guardian investigation into it about 6 months ago.

The TV coverage was so pathetic almost no-one knows the game was in the country. Last year it was live on BBC but this year they decided to put an hour of highlights around midnight instead.

In Scotland the highlights started at the same time as the live Sunday night game.

It seems odd to me that they would go to all the trouble of putting on a game at Wembley without a proper TV deal.

arabian business are running a story, written by tom rubython, that puts a figure on f1 driver salaries, with kimi on top:

    http://www.arabianbusiness.com/571803-exclusive-f1-drivers-celebrate-130m-pay-day-for-2009

i mention it only because a couple of sites are running the story, minus the source, and it's bound to come up during the day.

i know nothing of NFL aside from "the refrigerator".

I don't believe for a second that Rosberg is getting $8.5 million out of Williams.

That's way too high for someone who hasn't even won yet. And isn't this still the deal that got him into F1? So it can't be that high.

  • Steven Roy29/10/2009 at 02:24

haven't read anything new from him in aaages.

It must be a year or two since I last saw his name

Yep. This is atrocious. But then, it's only a 2-run lead. It'll only take a couple of pitches for the Yankees to score some runs.

Yep. This is atrocious. But then, it's only a 2-run lead. It'll only take a couple of pitches for the Yankees to score some runs.

*bad pitches, of which there haven't been a lot tonight.

  • Steven Roy29/10/2009 at 02:27

Both pitchers have been dominating the game. The two runs that the Phillies got were homers from Uttley with no-one on base. No-one else has looked like scoring all night. Until then

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 02:45

Bases loaded, 2 out. At least Utley didn't homer.

The home plate umpire has made a few very dodgy calls tonight. I don't think any of them changed anything but he should be better

Umpires have been the issue all postseason here, as has been instant replay. Yankees now 4 down, they really need to push.

    So the page says:

colours will be sorted at some point in november. speed is everything, and a mini doohickey will replace the text that says "coming soon..."

but not before the colours get sorted.

  • me29/10/2009 at 04:15

i also like it that you gave credit to the regulars. :)

great news. :) lots more time in the offseason to sort this all out.

  • F1Wolf29/10/2009 at 04:15

I am seeing the page in Opera. There are some problems with some text overlapping. Like for example in the header the SIDEPODCAST covers the begiining of the line "Your timely F1 podcast"

also on the Blog page for example in this post F1 Digest 2009 - Abu Dhabi Preview the icon (small image) covers the name of the author

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 04:15

that's people who've written a guest post. should i make it more clear?

yup, that would be a good idea.

Is this new, or I just haven't looked in a while?

i just copied it from the old page.

IAnd, doesn't every mission have a vision in mind? :D Hehe.

    ummm... oops.

  • me29/10/2009 at 04:16

I am seeing the page in Opera. There are some problems with some text overlapping. Like for example in the header the SIDEPODCAST covers the begiining of the line "Your timely F1 podcast"

i check it now. haven't dared look in IE either. i know that will be a mess.

FWIW, it looks fine in FF. I'd assume same goes for Safari. Will try it out in IE when I get to work in a bit.

my experience if a site can handle Opera (or vice versa), it can handle everything :-) used to be nice browser but not any more ...

I see the spam on drop.io . address is about 1 train station away from my office. near the old now defunct airport :-)

cool. mr c, just a question. do you intend the homepage to auto-refresh when there's a new article, ala huffingtonpost, or is that just too costly?

  • me29/10/2009 at 04:32

have never looked at said site. i shall do though.

currently, our plans revolve around something mentioned in the playground listed under notifications (coming soon). and the idea is, messages will appear in a similar style to doohickey's "pending comments" counter.

they might say "new blog posted: daily xxx" and when you click them the contents pops up. hadn't considered auto-refreshing.

when you wake up, read this:

It works great on IE6. And you didn't even try. :D

Just a minor note: the contributors list does get mucked up a bit. Looks like it doesn't recognize the tabbed indenting. Other than that, no visible defects.

    Hi guys!

I'm in Abu Dhabi right now! Arrived here about 2 hours ago and the whole airport and city it covered with all this Formula 1! David Coulthard was on my flight too and so far the atmosphere even without visiting the track has captured the whole city! Hope everyone's well! Will be leaving in about 2 hours for a Pitlane walk followed by an autograph session and a Beyonce concert tonight! More soon!

Wow - what a cool day in store for you!

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 07:15

Interesting bit of speculation - apparently, Vodafone don't operate in the UAE. They have a partnership with Du (a local telco company) that runs in the UAE for them.

So there could be a possibility (albeit remote) that McLaren will run with Du rather than Vodafone branding at Abu Dhabi.

    Du-Vodafone pics with Lewis here.

Interesting bit of speculation - apparently, Vodafone don't operate in the UAE. They have a partnership with Du (a local telco company) that runs in the UAE for them.

This is true... I've seen a couple of posters in the airport of Lewis with dual Du-vodafone branding... Not sure if this will change on the car though? I'd probably think Vodafone would want to stick with their own name because of the global audience rather than adding Du for a (relatively speaking) small target market

  • Rishi29/10/2009 at 07:24

The initial pics I saw from the Du Twitter account showed the car running Vodafone only. But stranger things have happened - and there is precedent too: I remember BAR running 555 livery instead of Lucky Strike whenever they were in China, for example.

My guess is that many more people outside the UAE will see the race in total, so it makes sense to stay as Vodaphone.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 08:51

Its ITP which is very good.

ITP is a local company? If so, that should mean the numbers are reasonably accurate. But given that there'll be so many new deals next year, the list will become a bit outdated.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 08:51

On the new homepage I was thinking the "Join in with the daily conversation" bit should really go to the doohicky... But then I thought oooh Mr C hasn't done the new post pages... So I shall just keep quiet and wait to see the goodness

Mr C says the Coming Soon at the bottom of the page is being reserved for a mini-doohickey.

  • Dank29/10/2009 at 09:19

I think it's blimmin' lazy. Why would anyone want to read rehashed blog entries from nine months ago in a book, especially when their free to read right here, right now?

  • Alex Andronov29/10/2009 at 09:19

There should be no keeping quiet. Where would we be if you all kept quiet?

Well yes... That's why I mentioned my thought... It was really nice looking at the homepage this morning. I saw what Mr C had been saying about why there should be breakout threads. I saw about the seperation of the daily out of the flow that had been mentioned for a while. Then when I clicked on the link I was surprised it didn't go to the doohicky, but then I thought... "aha... That's what Mr C was saying about doohicky integration... It doesn't need to go to the doohicky".

Pennies were dropping all over the shop.

  • Amy29/10/2009 at 09:19

I agree on the free copy thing - it's like the 'most commented' bit we used to have - it diluted the quality of the comments in favour of just posting stuff to get on the list.

I think he may have opened a can of worms with that one...

  • Dank29/10/2009 at 09:20

Personally I think it’s a great idea … especially now the homepage has been sorted…

I think it's blimmin' lazy. Why would anyone want to read rehashed blog entries from nine months ago in a book, especially when their free to read right here, right now?

Because some people like books - it also includes some great Darren Heath photos. Lots of people have asked me if I would consider trying to make money out of my blog and I reckon this is a great non-intrusive way of doing it.

You can always spend a couple of days searching through his blog to read it for free, I suppose...

  • Dank29/10/2009 at 09:23

There is a big market for things that are the edited highlights of already existing material.

James Allen is a very good writer who knows his beans. His previous books are both insightful and entertaining. This just seems to be nothing more than an easy way to make a quick buck in the run up to Christmas.

Would people pay £10 to read the content on his blog? No. But because it's something tangible and has a few pictures they'll lap it up?

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)29/10/2009 at 09:24

Would people pay £10 to read the content on his blog? No. But because it's something tangible and has a few pictures they'll lap it up?

Is it any different from another blogger asking for donations though?

  • Amy29/10/2009 at 09:24

There is a big market for things that are the edited highlights of already existing material.

I learned today the peril of trying to read on a Kindle on public transport is you don't get any reading done because people want to ask you what it is and what it does and where they can buy one. On the return journey I put my earbuds in so I could read in peace and that still didn't work. Boo.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 09:25

Would people pay £10 to read the content on his blog? No. But because it's something tangible and has a few pictures they'll lap it up?

Exactly that. And why not? Why not pay for the convenience of having the best stuff packaged together in a souvenir style?

I have no interest in the blog or the book, but I can imagine it would be popular.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 09:25

"great comment Journeyer, I agree with every word"

    :D

  • Kathi29/10/2009 at 09:25

no trees have to die for that :P

no trees have to die for that :P

Fair enough. Trees are not very #MFC ;)

Aside from that, is there a difference?

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 09:26

I think he may have opened a can of worms with that one...

I guess he didn't want to be in a position where he'd have to look at all the comments and see what were the Top 10 - time-consuming, mostly.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 09:27

I guess he didn't want to be in a position where he'd have to look at all the comments and see what were the Top 10 - time-consuming, mostly.

TBH it's not really a blog anymore though, is it?

I think at some point after he became a .com, his style changed from Blogger to inside reporter...

I don't see James Allen writing about how annoying Gino is though ;). I am curious as to how he actually behaves inside the paddock to make Joe write what he wrote. I just don't like him because hes always putting his face in front of the camera but it sounds like hes just as annoying in person.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 09:30

True. But I guess JA had his reasons for doing it.

Lou and Lukeh will like this. From RealBrawnGP:

Now that's out the way, what's happening? Well, it's hot hot hot 36°C in the paddock already, with a light breeze.

Last time we were in the hot Middle East, a Brawn won...

He's say... "They won't be. They'll be kind of... On the new homepage... When you see it, it's going to be awesome".

I think it's blimmin' lazy. Why would anyone want to read rehashed blog entries from nine months ago in a book, especially when their free to read right here, right now?

y'know i've slept on this and woken with a new perspective. my take now is:

    - james must've been planning this for a while, the darren heath linkup probably wasn't a coincidence

    - we can't do what he's doing, the hassle to sort out all the image rights is far too great. again, i'm sure that's not by chance

    - the man clearly isn't going to sell many copies, or get rich from this. in part i guess this is why there's a limited print run

    - i like that the idea of yearly collectables, commits him to further years of blogging

    - i don't like books, or bookshelves and i won't be buying it. but i commend the man for doing something no other f1 blogger has so much as even attempted

    so, yay for james.

I didn't add any pictures. But I carefully selected them, edited them, combined stories that had been published in multiple parts over several months, and in certain cases rewrote sections. And then I sold it.

Lots of people told me that they skipped reading the fiction on the web because it wasn't what they were in the mood for at the time. So I decided to offer them something in a form they would like.

And I would offer it for sale on the Kindle, and still think that people would see it as worth the money (minus printing costs), if Amazon would let UK publishers use the Kindle. Because the selection process, edit, etc. Change it from things I have thought and wondered about this week into a collection.

    New look is brilliant!

I get the feeling the top line of this chart is a bit wrong now though :D

It also has Honda on it.

I do think the rotating slogans are a very bad idea. We have spent all this time trying to eradicate the need to refresh...

I think of it that every new person who comes to the site gets something different even though it is a small thing.

they have media lights and broadcast cameras installed there all the time. so technically very easy.

They do? why? is anything ever shown from that room? i thought the tv interviews were usualy done in a different room?

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 11:25

Senna has signed for Campos... apparently.

Rumor on the street is that it's Senna and de la Rosa. And they're confirmed as a FOTA member. Campos is moving pretty darn quick.

True dat. The main pressers are held in a different room, which varies in size depending on the circuit. They couldn't let journos in where the unilaterals are recorded, owing to chit-chat, body functions, mobiles going off, etc.

I've written a post and sent it to Christine.

But if I remember correctly, these non-unilateral presscons are still recorded. The best bits sometimes end up on the season review DVDs. Examples include Ross Brawn getting grilled at Monza 2003, JPM hitting out at Schumi at Imola 2004, Schumi sharing his thoughts post-Indy 2005, and many others.

Hehe. Fortunately, the US isn't that awful. I remember this happening last year too - the UK version being ready for pre-order a few weeks before the US. I hope it doesn't take much longer before it's out in the US store.

Sweden is on... gravel, I think? Germany is on asphalt - that might as well be France, given how Loeb's made the place his own.

I suspect he'll drive Germany - easily convenient, and a friendly surface to Kimi.

    Sweden is on snow/ice.

Joe looks at the future of Adrian Sutil.

I find it odd that he still looks at the Renault angle, if the Glock-to-Renault stories are true. #sorryRG

If Kimi does indeed end up at McLaren, it'll be a choice between Toyota and Force India for Adrian. Depending on what kind of partnership they still have with McLaren, it may be time to move on.

I occasionally have this discussion with other exchange students. For non-English they are just word. We learn that they are bad words but they don't 'feel' bad to us. On top of that in Germany the rules are less strict.

I get that here in Denmark. You hear a Danish sentence peppered with English swear words. And I hate it because (a) it sounds wrong because they're not swearing properly and (b) because Danish swear words suck.

My Danish colleague has resorted to swearing in German - fantastic stuff! :D

Question for Kimi: you talk about your options. I just wondered how important it would be if you decided to stay in Formula One, if you found another team, that you could do some rallying as well, like you did with Ferrari or whether that’s something of a stumbling block, wanting to do another form of motor sport as well as doing Formula One?

I just wondered how important it would be if you decided to stay in Formula One, if you found another team, that you could do some rallying as well, like you did with Ferrari or whether that’s something of a stumbling block, wanting to do another form of motor sport as well as doing Formula One?

Mind you, it made Kimi confirm that he's staying in F1 next year, so it was worth something. :D

He probably just said it to get rid of Legard!

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 15:07

Yeah... Google are only giving invites to people they add. If you get added by a friend as happened to us you get no invites :(

I guess it really, really is just a preview and not a "spread the word" thing.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 15:07

He probably just said it to get rid of Legard!

    :D run-on sentences galore.

Well quite a few bits don't work properly and stuff. So it makes sense I guess.

Seriously what is Trulli on?! He lost control of hte car on the kerbs, why does he keep arguing when its his fault?

Me too. I do like they way you've put the different posts and the podcasts in a nice snazzy graphic

Very, very odd. Almost desperate, even. It makes me wonder if he has a deal in his pocket, after all - he might not have...

Very, very odd. Almost desperate, even. It makes me wonder if he has a deal in his pocket, after all - he might not have...

It feels like how it is when you're a kid, and you've clearly lost an argument but you still want to be the winner of the argument, so you just end it off when "well, well, well, your face!" and then run off.

    just me? oh well ;)

  • me29/10/2009 at 15:21

have to say big, big thanks to alex for twisting fourstar's arm into getting us google wave invites. now to figure out what we can do with it...

Is there a list of SPC folks somewhere who have wave accounts so that we can all get together?

snazzy graphic will be dynamic at some point. so later we might put stuart's guest post in there, or the live player during debrief.

    we're not done yet :)

what actually made 2.0 so slow to load anyway?

  • jpancoast29/10/2009 at 15:25

It would make my day if Trulli did that.

The best thing about that argument was Fernando sneaking into the front seat of the truck while Trulli was yelling at... that other guy, can't remember who it was :)

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 15:26

    From Alan Baldwin of Reuters:

Bumped into Bernie, who was wearing one shoe & a sandal. Suffering from gout he said. Unlike him to be wrong-footed.

Wow, Bernie in sandals? How rare is that?

    and...

The press room seems a lot emptier suddenly. May be something to do with the Beyonce concert over the road.

Not a lot of people missing it, then. :D

  • Alex Andronov29/10/2009 at 15:31

Wordpress is awesomeness, as long as you are not trying to write a doohickey.

Or deal with too many users... Wordpress is the reason James Allen's blog goes bad under high demand.

    Also true.

  • me29/10/2009 at 15:32

what actually made 2.0 so slow to load anyway?

nothing specifically made it slow, it's the work we've put in that makes the new page fast.

    however:

    - the server is located in the US, so it's slow(er) to load if you're reading in the UK than other blogs which might be hosted here.

    - the hosting company in question are useless at what they do

    - the content management system is years old and isn't optimised for any specific site/platform.

points one and two are still an issue, but we've made them less problematic using extensive caching, problem number three was resolved by building our own sidepodcast CMS.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 15:33

He didn't use the word "wordpress" once!

    Humph.

At the bottom of the page, there should be a link saying "Complete history"

Find the version you want, and click the little arrow on the left to open it up. Another button should come up to say "Make current version."

  • jpancoast29/10/2009 at 16:13

Hello all, Happy Birthday Bassano & Gavin. Been catching up on the drop, absolutely love the Parade Lap plug, brilliant use of O Fortuna. Love the new look, just one idea. I think if you click on "Join in with the daily conversation" it should take you to the doohickey so you can join in. However, there should also be a "Catch up with other people's comments" or something as I would struggle to see the comments on my mobile otherwise. I know it's a work in progress but I think the progress so far has been spectacular

    What the heck is a placement day? {Comment #6}

A placement is a basically the same as work experience. In this case the JobCentre sent me there initially, but I'm free to turn up or not as I please because it's voluntary work... ...at least in theory.

A day refers to the days I'm supposed to be at placement. This one started off as one day per week, morphed into four when it got extended due to another member of staff going on holiday, and is five this week because my supervisor caught swine flu, resulting in a severe staff shortage.

Since I like my placement, I like having more days there :)

brawn fans aren't happy about the possible split of the awesome brawnsomeness of Jenson and Rubens..

totally agree, was just stating a fact about young Nico. Rubinho will suffer at Williams...it can't happen!

  • Lukeh29/10/2009 at 20:05

He's talented, he just needs a good car.

    I think he's a great driver. And I agree.

But this is rubens car. That is the forbidden fruit!! How dare he take my Rubens seat :( it must not happen. I will cut off his golden locks and selotape them to my face as eyebrows in protest if he steals Rubens seat.

  • lou29/10/2009 at 20:05

He's talented, he just needs a good car.

but... why can't he go to another team :( Brawn IS Jenson and Rubens... they are a huge part the team i love so much... they are such a great partnership.. :(

Has anyone worked out the Genius Mix thing in iTunes... I think it gets very confused with my music collection...

I, personally, am not convinced that a mix of Katy Perry and Black Francis is a sensible place to start from.

  • me29/10/2009 at 20:07

The Genius Mix and the Genius playlist are both great because they only work from your own music. It's the Genius sidebar that is the trouble for cost.

I, personally, am not convinced that a mix of Katy Perry and Black Francis is a sensible place to start from.

Some of them seem more sensible I guess... But that's just madness surely

I'd like to link to a black francis song but I would have to assume that they all contain unsuitable lyrics.

Will Williams ever be properly competitive again?

  • me29/10/2009 at 20:45

Will Williams ever be properly competitive again?

just to confuse you lb22, the williams conversation has switched threads.

you can use the 'active thread' select box near the top of the page, to choose threads and enable/disable reply buttons.

    ...if that makes sense?

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 20:47

Will Williams ever be properly competitive again?

If Brawn can emerge from the ashes of Honda and Red Bull produce the best "overall" car of 2009 it is possible. A lot will hinge on whether the Cosworth is more competitive than the other engines given that it can be developed and other engines cannot.

  • lou29/10/2009 at 21:11

I'm going to be honest... it's going to take some getting used to having the huge white space either side of the comments rather than the green. but i like that you can access stuff from doohickey. makes it feel like a bigger part of the site, and not just an addition to it.

the only bug that we're aware of, is if you make the page width really small, say for use with live timing, the header and footer have issues.

  • me29/10/2009 at 21:13

is the text actually smaller? or is it the space?

less wide, i think. text should be the same.

the only bug that we're aware of, is if you make the page width really small, say for use with live timing, the header and footer have issues.

ahhh makes sense. it just feels much more open than it was, i liked having the border to it, i can't help thinking the comments may get lost in the white.. then again all i've ever been used to is the doohickey like it was, it's not a bad thing, just a difference. :)

you've done some awesome work here mr c, no wonder you've been coding so much lately, these updates are great :) thanks to mrs c too :)

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 21:16

Wow! Something new every visit at the moment

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 21:16

I like the newhickey bluehickey :D

I think it is a improvement, whether one likes it or not the style of webpages changes with time (rather rapidly) - this has freshened things up.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 21:16

you've done some awesome work here mr c, no wonder you've been coding so much lately, these updates are great :) thanks to mrs c too :)

I think I prefer the white, but I am 99% sure I'll be in the minority.

  • Lukeh29/10/2009 at 21:17

I am always the afterthought :)

Excellent job Christine at being Christine!

    yeah you too mr c.

(I kid, you both rock in equally immense measures!!)

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 21:17

yeah, a slightly off-white colour would be good

I like this - it is more contemporary as a web design.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 21:17

    yeah you too mr c.

    :D

  • Lukeh29/10/2009 at 21:17

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 21:17

    yeah you too mr c.

    Mr C is being Christine?

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 21:18

    now 97% - I like it too!

  • Steven Roy29/10/2009 at 21:18

Still not here but had to comment. I like the new doohickey. Looks really good but I would swear the text in the comments is bigger but not in the box you type comments in. It is the same.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 21:18

:( i was trying to make sure i mentioned you.. the podcasts are really well edited!... ah i'll just go find a panda now..

Hehehe, I'm just messing. I get lots of attention when I make stuff, now it's Mr C's turn.

  • Lukeh29/10/2009 at 21:18

blimey, you may be right. hmm, will look into it.

Hmmmm. Depends on the browser maybe?

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 21:20

Hmmmm. Depends on the browser maybe?

    OOps, no. False alarm

  • Janna29/10/2009 at 21:23

I very much like the new look but I think the all white will make it hard on the eyes after a while. When we're live commenting a race you can be looking at the doohickey for a couple of hours straight. Having contrast colour sides (even if it's less white than a complete contrast) would be easier on the eyes. I tried reducing the size to the one I use when I have live timing up & it fits beautifully.

  • lou29/10/2009 at 21:25

Hehehe, I'm just messing. I get lots of attention when I make stuff, now it's Mr C's turn.

i found both a panda and some rob... and some more rob

    :)

  • Janna29/10/2009 at 21:26

i found both a panda and some rob... and some more rob

    Awww that's so cute (& I don't mean rob)

  • Pat W29/10/2009 at 21:27

as in, a list of swear words? good question. although how would we list them without swearing?

Reminds me of the sketch in Bo Selecta... Davina McCall...

  • Pat W29/10/2009 at 21:28

maybe doohickey could say something, if a words matched a filter. wouldn't be perfect, but might be a start?

PF chat just changes the word to 'nincompoop' :-)

  • LB2229/10/2009 at 21:29

I think it works perfectly. It's a lot more structured than the old one, which had a lot of jumpy-outy stuff, like the top bar.

  • Jon Waldock29/10/2009 at 21:29

    what all swear words?

  • me29/10/2009 at 21:30

Having contrast colour sides (even if it's less white than a complete contrast) would be easier on the eyes.

in truth that's partly why lclt remains as-is. i have reduced my brightness though, which can't be a good thing.

  • me29/10/2009 at 21:31

PF chat just changes the word to 'nincompoop' :-)

    ahhhh. interesting thought.

    I haven't thoroughly tested it..

AOL used to use the word lollipop, which made people from Slollipophorpe very confused.

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 21:33

I just like the thought of saying snazzy nincompoop.

ahh right. green pages are being eradicated.

first they'll go blue, and then we'll plug in live comments, and finally we'll add a further coat of paint to the whole thing.

    2 - 3 weeks, i'd guess.

  • lou29/10/2009 at 21:49

yeah definately! i love having my hair cut! the hairdressers i go to are lovely and it's just nice to sit and chill for a bit and come out feeling better and looking a little nicer :)

I am not happy. I don't mind Gillett losing money. I don't mind Donington not getting the GP. I don't even mind losing the MotoGP. What annoys me is what they've done to the track with seemingly no way out.

It's very very sad, In terms of the events on offer there was nothing wrong with the track.

They're the latest, and by no means the last to gamble it all on F1.

Sad times ahead for the track methinks.

  • Pat W29/10/2009 at 22:04

    Evening Pat, and RG.

I copied it from Doohicky and put it in blockquotes.

Do I need to go and stand in the corner and think about what I've done?!

  • Jordan F1 - 2008 Sidepodcastland Champions!29/10/2009 at 22:06

Hey Mr. C! I love wht you did to teh home page of the Sidepodcast website? How long is it going to be before the site is in th esame colour scheme?

Speaking of colour schemes, my favourite team colours are long gone. Unless Roger Penske decides to reenter F1 as I loved the previous McLaren Marboro cigarette box on wheels that is still being used by Penske's IRL team, so they are closer to bringing it back than McLaren currently are. Also I loved the Dark Blood Red that Ferrari had before Schuie came on board. That colour plus the screaming Banshee that was their V-12 engines made Ferrari....

But the ultimate colour scheme for me was on the J197 Jordan. I just loved that Snake head on the nose ! FRENKEN AWESOME! Plus Jordan was punching well above their weight in 1997!

  • me29/10/2009 at 22:08

Crid. It's about the third last comment. Then Stuart is last winding Joe up to have a go at someone else

ahh. i think darran + stuart > crid. amy will be fine.

  • me29/10/2009 at 22:09

Hey Mr. C! I love wht you did to teh home page of the Sidepodcast website? How long is it going to be before the site is in th esame colour scheme?

    2 - 3 weeks.

  • Pat W29/10/2009 at 22:11

Do I need to go and stand in the corner and think about what I've done?!

Just trying to keep things tidy :-)

Quick question....been working away for the last couple of days so not had time to check.

Did the rocket launch ok, and did the string get involved again?

  • Steven Roy29/10/2009 at 22:18

Did the rocket launch ok, and did the string get involved again?

It launched eventually. They had a 4 hour launch window on the second day and they used up most of that trying to find some suitable weather. It all went according to plan but just as the separation occurred NASA TV crashed.

  • Adie29/10/2009 at 22:20

Do I have issues if after nearly 2 weeks I have F1 withdrawal problems so I'm watching the Brazilian GP.

Oh - I gave the Brawn garage for you Lou. They have a rather attractive "BRAWN GP - WORLD CHAMPIONS 2009' banner above the garage.

I wanted to take a photo for drop.io but the roundabout outside isn't the best place to stop / lean out of the car with iPhone in hand at 07:30...

okay... and being happy again :)

    hadn't considered that.

can we get one last shout out from them this weekend? we've had maurice, david and holly say sidepodcast, but never ant.

  • Christine29/10/2009 at 22:35

i heart ant :( lots... he is awesome... lets tweet them lots.. :( can someone make sure they record it though, cause i'll not be there - am at my cousins in the morning... will listen in the car...

I assume someone mentioned earlier that Kimi has said that Toyota was not an option for him and he will only be in F1 next season if he does a deal with McLaren.

I'm so glad he (might) be on the way back. Unless all those stupid Nico/Jenson rumors are true

  • lou29/10/2009 at 22:46

I'm so glad he (might) be on the way back. Unless all those stupid Nico/Jenson rumors are true

Brawn would not be stupid enough to let Jenson leave... Mercedes wouldn't want Jenson to take No.1 (eeeeek) to another team... plus Jenson doesn't want to leave. :D

  • Pat W29/10/2009 at 22:49

Brawn would not be stupid enough to let Jenson leave... Mercedes wouldn't want Jenson to take No.1 (eeeeek) to another team... plus Jenson doesn't want to leave. :D

I don't see him leaving. Even if the salary wasn't to his liking, it isn't as if he can't make it up with endorsements elsewhere. Those two words 'World Champion' will open a lot of doors in that direction.

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 22:49

Brawn would not be stupid enough to let Jenson leave... Mercedes wouldn't want Jenson to take No.1 (eeeeek) to another team... plus Jenson doesn't want to leave. :D

Um, I'm not sure any of those things are necessarily true. But I want Jenson to stay with Brawn, hence calling the rumors stupid

  • lou29/10/2009 at 22:51

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 22:51

I'm so glad he (might) be on the way back. Unless all those stupid Nico/Jenson rumors are true

I think there are less than even chance of him being with Macca - he and/or his manager have shown too much greed. Macca have said they want a driver hungry for success and not one who wants a good salary.

  • Jon Waldock29/10/2009 at 22:52

Ok so i'm stealing this off MWM, but everyone has to name their top 5 drivers of the season in order, but you have to keep in mind their car. So i could say Fisi is my number 3, because he was amazing when the car was good (i'm not going to, but you get the picture)

    GOGOGO

    to start you off....mine are

    1. Vettel (ignoring the first part of the season)

    2. Button (ignoring the middle part of the season)

    3. Barrichello

    4. 'Nando

    5. Webber

    Who's yours?

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 22:53

Um, I'm not sure any of those things are necessarily true. But I want Jenson to stay with Brawn, hence calling the rumors stupid

Jenson must either except what Ross offers or find another drive. Ross will not compromise the team to afford one driver - this is the clear message I am reading. Like Macca will not pay Kimi a Ferrari salary.

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 22:55

Jenson must either except what Ross offers or find another drive. Ross will not compromise the team to afford one driver - this is the clear message I am reading. Like Macca will not pay Kimi a Ferrari salary.

Kimi already has his Ferrari salary, so he doesn't really need anything huge from Mclaren, and he has tipped his hand saying he wants the drive.

Mercedes would not want to loose Jenson (#1), so he should be with either Mclaren or Brawn.

    It's so confusing.

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 22:57

    1. Vettel (ignoring the first part of the season)

    2. Button (ignoring the middle part of the season)

    3. Barrichello

    4. 'Nando

    5. Webber

Problem is Vettel has yet to overtake virtually anybody. Button played the strategic game, Barrichello had problems with the brakes until mid-year, in all honesty Nando's was an anonymous year (poor Robert for next year) and Webber was comprehensively bettered by his team mate who cannot overtake.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 22:57

Wow. So when I wake up I see:

    1. NEW doohickey!

    2. Senna to Campos confirmed?

    3. Barrichello to Williams confirmed?

  • RG29/10/2009 at 22:58

    Who's yours?

    1) Barrichello 2) Button 3) Hamilton 4) Vettel 5) Webber

  • Jon Waldock29/10/2009 at 22:58

I didn't ask you to critique mine ;) i ask you for yours

  • lou29/10/2009 at 22:58

    Who's yours?

i feel that my bias is no longer helping me with these kinda things... but i say

    1. Button (obviously)

    2. Vettel (has done sooo well)

    3. Barrichello (also done well)

    4. Hamilton (he's had an amazing end to the season)

    5. Webber (for getting his first win and generally doing so well even though he's had bad luck!)

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 22:58

    1. NEW doohickey!

    2. Senna to Campos confirmed?

    3. Barrichello to Williams confirmed?

Is something confirmed if it has a question mark?

  • Lukeh29/10/2009 at 22:58

    1. NEW doohickey!

    2. Senna to Campos confirmed?

    3. Barrichello to Williams confirmed?

    1. YES!

    2. Seems that way

    3. I see a number 3 but I don't see any text after it. odd that. ;)

  • lou29/10/2009 at 22:59

    3. Barrichello to Williams confirmed?

  • Alex Andronov29/10/2009 at 22:59

Problem is Vettel has yet to overtake virtually anybody. Button played the strategic game, Barrichello had problems with the brakes until mid-year, in all honesty Nando's was an anonymous year (poor Robert for next year) and Webber was comprehensively bettered by his team mate who cannot overtake.

I certainly believe the overtaking is the car. Because Mark has found it very hard too except in special situations.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 22:59

Is something confirmed if it has a question mark?

2 and 3 were confirmed by TV Globo (almost always accurate with Brazilians), but not by Autosport.

  • Paul29/10/2009 at 23:00

I certainly believe the overtaking is the car. Because Mark has found it very hard too except in special situations.

Pah, it's easy Webber just bumps others out of the way

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 23:00

Kimi already has his Ferrari salary, so he doesn't really need anything huge from Mclaren, and he has tipped his hand saying he wants the drive.

I I were McLaren I would not hire Kimi - he only wants to do a dozen PR events, wants a large salary and his motivation is questionable e.g. I have lots of choices for next year. If Kimi joins Macca his F1 career is over as Lewis will trash him for a number of reasons.

  • lou29/10/2009 at 23:00

    3. Barrichello to Williams confirmed?

doohickey was so shocked that it deleted my comment?

anyways.. Rubens isn't confirmed for Williams...

  • lou29/10/2009 at 23:01

2 and 3 were confirmed by TV Globo (almost always accurate with Brazilians), but not by Autosport.

they are wrong! Globo or some Brazilian company have been claiming it's a done deal for a while... but Rubens said in Brazil or somewhere that he was in talks with both teams.. or that he was in talks with Brawn or something... Lukeh! you'll know..

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 23:01

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 23:01

I certainly believe the overtaking is the car. Because Mark has found it very hard too except in special situations.

Mark is mediocre so not a good yardstick. Other than a few races the Red Bull was the best car. On an overall basis I think Brawn was second and Macca third.

My top 5 (this is very tough, though):

    1. Button

    5. Webber

Wave to lou, she's still on top of it I think

  • Rich29/10/2009 at 23:09

Come on Rich!! Give us your top 5

It is difficult for me to say due to differences in the car.

    1) Jenson (cannot deny his first season - it was amazing)

    2) Rubens (he really had all of the bad luck.

    3) Kimi (Ferrari is not as competitive as the Macca)

    4) Lewis (made to many mistakes - on my account he lost 20 points but had some great drives)

    5) Vettel (the Red Bull was on at last 10 tracks in a class of its own where even DC would make it look good)

1 and 2 could be interchanged depending on my mood .

  • lou29/10/2009 at 23:09

Wave to lou, she's still on top of it I think

    yep i'm still sitting here..

Lewis stuffed up Monaco in qualy - he plus car should have got pole and victory there and threw third place at Monza.

Monza doesn't matter so much to me in that he wasn't contending for the title anymore anyway. Monaco did bring him down a couple of notches for me. But still, he managed to work with what was an awful car and made it a pretty darn good car. Look at where Heikki is...

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 23:13

I'm not sure... I think it's kinda like the lists on Tweetdeck...

If you see Mr Glock talking to Mr Bell and there is a shaken hand. Do tell.

I am fairly sure Timo is going to Renault to join Robert - its a strong pair.

Monza doesn't matter so much to me in that he wasn't contending for the title anymore anyway. Monaco did bring him down a couple of notches for me. But still, he managed to work with what was an awful car and made it a pretty darn good car. Look at where Heikki is...

I rated Kimi's season better since the Ferrari was not as good a car as the Macca this year and they have similar points. The car was not that aweful to be honest - sure in the beginning and on certain tracks - it is clearly the third best car overall.

You make a pretty good point there. But the way I see, while they have similar points, when Kimi was 3rd, it was usually a distant 3rd. When Lewis was 3rd, it's usually after missing out on a win (or after contending for a win). Lewis would've also been a bit further ahead of Kimi if it were not for Liegate.

but in all honesty there have been times when the Macca was the best car. The team did an awesome job of turning it around and next year they will be the team to beat. There is not much in between Kimi and Lewis. I would be disappointed since Lewis could have been competing with Rubens and DeSeb for second place. Kimi's success had a lot to do with the KERs rather than his driving.

...but everyone has to name their top 5 drivers of the season in order, but you have to keep in mind their car....

    Afternoon all!

    1. Jenson

    2. Lewis

    3. Sebastein

    4. Kimi

    5. Tamkuma Sato - that pass on 'Nando at Canada 2007 will stay with me forever.

In other news, Jenson can't wait to have kids: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79828

    Or something like that.

  • Journeyer29/10/2009 at 23:48

Amy is not going to be happy. Despite Joe getting a huge number of comments on his post about a well known Ferrari hanger-on there has finally been one in favour of the dispicable man.

Mind you, the same guy said:

(By the way: Does anyone know who that pretty woman is in the Ferrari uniform in the garage? Light brown hair, slender, about 35yo? Let’s see more of her...)

And Joe confirmed what I've known - she's Stefania Bocchi, one of their veteran PR personnel. And I oh so agree. :D

    Q. What, you've actually written it on there?

    Jenson says:

I cannot wait for my kids to be old enough to be able to tell them what we have achieved.' That is something that excited me about my future, for sure – having the family and telling them that your daddy was world champion… But that will be in 20 years' time, before you start writing Jenson can't wait to have kids.

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:03

    Alianora,

    What has happenned to your blog? I keep getting Page-not-found messages? Hope you are back soon. {Comment #659}

The forum hosting my blog has had a domain expire on it while my co-admin's computer was being repaired, taking down both forum and blog in one move. Last I heard (two days ago) my co-admin was attempting to restore it, but it seems to be taking a very long time. Unfortunately the Wordpress blog Mr C and I attempted to set up is proving to be so unreliable that it's not a viable solution.

As such, I'm not going to be able to be back until a) the forum hosting my original blog is restored or b) a more reliable, viable platform than Wordpress is found.

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:17

A placement is a bit like being an intern

    so no actual responsibilites, just hanging out? {Comment #8}

There are definitely responsibilities in this placement, though the amount of work ebbs and flows a lot.

I started out just greeting people and answering telephones (and mostly redirecting people to other employees' offices at that). Then I started helping out my supervisor on some of the more repetitious parts of her paperwork and helping to decipher the more complicated database (there are two at work).

By the end of my four-week placement (which is normally the only one given on the scheme I was placed upon), I was invited to cover for an employee who was going on holiday (he's currently in the USA - hope he's enjoying himself). The main change was that I was solely responsible for the simpler and more useful of the databases. Whenever there's a new client or anything about an existing client changes, I have to update the database accordingly. I've also embarked on a mission to update the placement register to include more details and more placement locations. In case you're wondering, the place where I have my placement has, among other things, the contract for putting people on placements on behalf of the local JobCentres, meaning that I appear on the database I am maintaining.

Today, I got a crash course in persuading placement providers to accept clients by the marketing director in an effort to help him make this month's target. Yesterday I helped another centre archive. It's a varied and sometimes busy role... ...but sometimes I do find I'm spending lengthy periods of time waiting around trying to look professional. The act is necessary because there's a huge plate glass window behind my head when I'm at my desk and there are frequent traffic jams on the road passing my workplace. If I started doing the macarena to amuse myself, the people in the traffic jam might be distracted from the large advert above the window that explains what my organisation actually does!

There is talk of me possibly getting a job with the organisation in a month or two's time, but it's early days. And yes, what I'm doing at the moment is unpaid unless you count the fact that it ensures I still get Jobseeker's Benefit uninterrupted...

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:23

Erm I would take it to mean unpaid labour…..

    Okay, how is that a good thing, unless your boss is really hot and there’s…..I’ll stop now {Comment #10}

It's a good thing because this currently represents my best chance of getting a job involving pay. Having not had an interview anywhere since August and having been messed around badly by the company involved in that interview (not to mention the disaster that was my last job (and first paid one)), it gives me confidence that there are employers out there who are actually bothered about getting employees who are some good at their job instead of going through the motions in order to repeat the same mistakes as before simply because it makes them personally comfy...

This "overtime" (along with my performance at the placement) is going down well with my colleagues - to the point where one of my colleagues forgot I wasn't technically an employee today - and there are vacancies opening up in the organisation in December and January. So maybe by February I'll have a job there. If so, it'll be a job at somewhere I like and where my colleagues know, accept and appreciate my quirks. This makes me very happy indeed :)

  • Steven Roy30/10/2009 at 00:26

There is talk of me possibly getting a job with the organisation in a month or two's time, but it's early days. And yes, what I'm doing at the moment is unpaid unless you count the fact that it ensures I still get Jobseeker's Benefit uninterrupted...

Great news about the possible job. It's nice to see someone getting something out of one of these things and with the effort you have put in you deserve it.

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:29

    Isn’t placement usually taken as part of school work, whereas an internship is usually teken after graduation? That’s how it works around these parts at least. {Comment #12}

An internship is generally for recent graduates and placements are usually school work, but I'm no longer considered to be in either category. It's in the style of voluntary work, except that the JobCentre sent me there to make me more employable, meaning it doesn't feel like voluntary work (when the JobCentre can theoretically stop your benefits for non-attendance if your advisor feels your act is harming your employment chances, it makes a difference).

My workplace, which has the contract for this scheme where I live, calls them placements. In the absence of any more substantial reason to call my situation that, I'm calling it a placement as well.

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:33

    Great news about the possible job. It’s nice to see someone getting something out of one of these things and with the effort you have put in you deserve it. {Comment #1068}

 Well, they do tell me that the whole point of the placement scheme is to help people get jobs. It would be fairly ironic if it didn't give some of their placement people jobs (especially given how many people they see). Also, it's pretty easy to be motivated to put the effort in given what my organisation is like :)

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:36

    There are no interns in the UK as far as I am aware so they all count as placements {Comment #14}

Interns are generally found in places like the banking sector, where the term and "graduate trainee" are synonymous and sometimes interchangeable. That said, there are some places where graduate trainees are paid a lot of money, so the interchangeability is not absolute by any means.

  • Alianora La Canta30/10/2009 at 00:54

Sutil to Jarno: “Back in Barcelona. I didn’t hit you, you hit me. I don’t know what’s the problem, but maybe your eyes are a problem…”

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKLT31141620091029

    And Joe is musing the possibility of them being team mates next year! {Comment #522}

I've heard people say that Massa/Alonso might not go too well at Ferrari. For me, Trulli/Sutil would be much, much worse. Which is strange because Jarno never struck me as someone who would stay this angry for this long at some silly incident before...

  • Alex Andronov30/10/2009 at 05:50
