It is Wednesday, and that means we are about to start properly talking about Abu Dhabi. I mentioned it on Monday, but it still doesn't seem like it's really happening yet. Hopefully, when the schedule appears, it will seem more exciting. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • Glock won't be back in Abu Dhabi, which RG talks about in his Timo dedicated blog. It's disappointing, as I think it's fair to say Glock has impressed this year. Let's hope he can move on to better things next year. Discuss on RG's blog or in our breakout thread here.
  • Brazil was an interesting race all round, but Williams have opened up to allow their strategist to let us know how his weekend was. Stressful, is how I would describe it, but he describes it in much more interesting detail.
  • It's worth pointing out some of the new updates we've posted on the new sidepodcast.com/blog page, where you can now share posts via Twitter and Facebook. There are more details my introductory comment, and please, please test this out for us if you get a chance.

That'll do for now. As mentioned above there'll be a schedule post along later in the day, and you may even get some podcast goodness today as well. I'll see you in the comments.

Afternoon from NZL - I was jsut reading and commenting over on Keith's site on the re-fueling thread and someone made mention of fuel pumps in an unusual context.

"The double decker fuel pumps are a big fat angle on the rear wheel generate turbulence. The rear nonecone is the biggest culprit here. The fuel pump alone generates little turbulence, the steering wheel lots, together loads..."

I assume he means 'fuel pumps at a big fat angle" - but what fuel pump is he refering to? The fuel flap is down while racing. Any ideas?

    Did you get him fixed?

    Did you get him fixed?

No. I bought a new tyre on the way to work and made an appointment to get his nose fixed on Monday.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 00:25

I have no idea what he is on about. It doesn't make any sense to me.

  • Dave in NZL28/10/2009 at 00:29

Thanks Steven, I think I'll just leave it. I don't want to think too hard about it.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 00:29

I am quite amazed to find that I made the first comment on that thread today as I haven't posted any comments on his site for some time. I did post that same comment some months ago but I am surprised Keith seems to be re-cycling comments. Must be part of the F1 green thing.

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 00:32

"The double decker fuel pumps are a big fat angle on the rear wheel generate turbulence. The rear nonecone is the biggest culprit here. The fuel pump alone generates little turbulence, the steering wheel lots, together loads..."

There is no such thing as a 'rear nosecone'

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 00:35

There is no such thing as a 'rear nosecone'

There is also not a fuel pump on the rear wheel and as far as I am aware there is no such thing as a double decker fuel pump.

Well, you were the first comment, but only on page 2. ;) Still, you weren't the one that commented on that yesterday?

    That is very odd, indeed.

I haven't left a comment on that site in weeks. Someone has cut and pasted a comment I made at some time in the past and put it in as if I commented to that post. I assume it was Keith trying to drive comments by using it to provoke a reaction. I have now left a comment saying that I did not make the original comment so I will what happens.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 00:40

Somewhat, in that someone's posting with his name. But if said guy is using exactly what he said... that's just very odd.

If Keith has done it himself it just drops his site down a level in my view as it means you can't believe what you read on it. If anyone else has done it then it is beyond me to dream up the reason why they would.

    OI!

tis okay, that isn't going to happen here. have removed.

we are very scared of people impersonating others. the last person to do that turned out to be a complete psycho.

impersonating god is acceptable though, until he complains.

How do you know that is an impersonator?

Clearly whoever impersonated me there was doing it for a joke which is a bit different to suggesting I am posting on a site when I am not.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 01:04

Dave from NZ asked about a comment he had read on F1 Fanatic that he didn't understand. I had a look at the thread only to discover that a detailed comment from me was on the same thread even though I haven't commented there in weeks/months.

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:04

How do you know that is an impersonator?

    ...

    good question.

Clearly whoever impersonated me there was doing it for a joke which is a bit different to suggesting I am posting on a site when I am not.

of course. but, we are somewhat paranoid on the whole subject.

  • Alison28/10/2009 at 01:06

of course. but, we are somewhat paranoid on the whole subject.

There's not really a way to solve it though is there.... Not without making it a membership thing.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 01:07

There's not really a way to solve it though is there.... Not without making it a membership thing.

It is easy in blog comments for anyone to pretend to be anyone else.

  • Alison28/10/2009 at 01:10

I guess you can link people to their IP address but obviously it's okay to comment from elsewhere.

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:14

There's not really a way to solve it though is there.... Not without making it a membership thing.

that is coming, but it won't be mandatory. tis under the playground section of authentication (coming soon).

you can't stop loonies from commenting once, but you can at least prevent them from having a voice and another go. i manually deleted over a hundred comments from the person who was pretending to be someone else last weekend. it's a pain and a waste of time, but it has to be done.

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 01:16

of course. but, we are somewhat paranoid on the whole subject.

better to avoid the whole thing.

i've seen it happen in jest at another place and that was confusing enough, without factoring in those with malicious intent..

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:17

I guess you can link people to their IP address but obviously it's okay to comment from elsewhere.

we have more information than that. but in the end, stupid people will always "out" themselves, because they're can't help themselves.

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 01:17

There's not really a way to solve it though is there.... Not without making it a membership thing.

membership would be a shame, but perhaps necessary... how about openID?

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:18

membership would be a shame, but perhaps necessary... how about openID?

if it's optional, it's the best of both worlds, no?

openid is very much the plan, although facebook/google accounts are also viable.

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 01:19

hold on, someone was impersonating again that recently? you are clearly doing a good job because i had no idea. but it is a pain to have to do.

  • Alison28/10/2009 at 01:19

    What is openID?

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 01:19

if it's optional, it's the best of both worlds, no?

perhaps. they could still impersonate someone who hasn't opted in.

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 01:22

    What is openID?

It was developed as a cross-platform log in system for blog comments, among other things. Say a blogger wanted to only allow comments from people who signed in. The commenter would have to have a login for Wordpress, and for another blog they'd have to have a login for Blogger, and Typepad, and whatever else. OpenID means one login for all systems

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:23

perhaps. they could still impersonate someone who hasn't opted in.

    agreed. tis tricky.

Oh I see. I don't like the idea of that tbh. It doesn't suit my requirements and is all a bit centralised for my liking.

I really like it. If you read lots of blogs it makes it easier to comment. If you don't I suppose it would be no different to typing your name in the Name box above here...

  • me28/10/2009 at 01:28

there are many providers and you can as many identities as suits you. you can create an openid just for spc if you like. he important thing is it tells us that you are you.

Croissants don't have a filling. The closest thing you get to croissants with a filling are pain-au-chocolat which are made of the same stuff but are not crescent shaped and have chocolate as a filling.

  • Amy28/10/2009 at 02:14

oh. In this place they take normal crescent shared croissants and slice them them put a bit of cheese and ham in it then warm it til it melts. Very common actually, many places sell it like that.

  • Dave in NZL28/10/2009 at 02:37

I wouldn't let this in to the wild, but http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Tripcode gives a good enough example of implimentation.

4chan.org uses it. I just checked.

    http://zip.4chan.org/o/imgboard.html

In the name field type: name#tripcode

it out puts name HG*SNSF93 (etc)

the HG*SNSF93 part is unique to the secret trip code entered.

    Perhaps.

F1Blog has a bit of a go at USF1 for not embracing new media:

the same can be said about all the new teams though. i think it's simply a case of the mountain of work required to get a car to the grid means everything else is secondary.

i'm sure there will be live streaming web cams at some point next year. there's no real need for any pr right now, is there?

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:28

the same can be said about all the new teams though. i think it's simply a case of the mountain of work required to get a car to the grid means everything else is secondary.

that's true. but then, that's why everybody will go questioning your credibility - because they can't see anything.

i'm sure there will be live streaming web cams at some point next year. there's no real need for any pr right now, is there?

i guess it's just a matter of inconsistency, especially with USF1. i remember yesterday reading peter windsor saying that they'll do a reality TV show for their driver selection programme. we've heard nothing about that since - what happened? at the very least, i'd expect a working website, which they don't even have right now.

  • me28/10/2009 at 03:30

that's true. but then, that's why everybody will go questioning your credibility - because they can't see anything.

    but do usf1 care, really?

at the very least, i'd expect a working website, which they don't even have right now.

fair enough. they thought they were entering a completely different championship, until fota pulled the rug from under them. i'd imagine all plans went to hell once that happened (not to mention how much the dealys must've impacted things).

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:32

    but do usf1 care, really?

i guess they don't. wouldn't do them any harm in getting sponsors, though. especially in the US where F1 has little visibility.

fair enough. they thought they were entering a completely different championship, until fota pulled the rug from under them. i'd imagine all plans went to hell once that happened (not to mention how much the delays must've impacted things).

Fair point. But considering that had an earlier start (they came out before the budget cap was initially finalized), and they supposedly have more resources on hand (like that windtunnel), I was hoping they wouldn't be so badly affected.

  • me28/10/2009 at 03:35

by rights, they should be ahead of the competition, but the competition aren't really setting the world on fire either.

it's still quite possible none of the new teams will be ready by the first race.

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 03:35

they don't seem to have much PR other than Peter Windsor at the moment. Perhaps funding realities are hitting home, and they cannot afford web developers right now while trying to get cars on track

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:35

it's still quite possible none of the new teams will be ready by the first race.

And that would be a horrible thought. well, at least we're guaranteed 10 teams whatever happens (QADBAK should get back in if any or all of the new teams don't make it).

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 03:36

wed development would be bottom of my list, if i were windsor.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:37

true. it's got to be considered though. the timeframe for doing this is crazy.

just like the 80s... ;) it'll make Brawn GP's saga last year look like a walk in the park in comparison.

very true. they only needed money.

these teams need money, a car, a factory, staff, motorhomes, sponsorship, clothing, drivers... and a web developer.

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 03:39

wed development would be bottom of my list, if i were windsor.

Hmmm. Depends if he still needs to attract funds I guess. Otherwise - spend the money on engineers

I wonder if these teams will jut put any old car on track, or hold back until they are really ready. We could have cars way outside 107% time in qualifying

  • Joe in Fla28/10/2009 at 03:45

I wonder if these teams will jut put any old car on track, or hold back until they are really ready. We could have cars way outside 107% time in qualifying

I presume all teams that show up to a GP will race...no prequaly or anything

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:46

I wonder if these teams will jut put any old car on track, or hold back until they are really ready. We could have cars way outside 107% time in qualifying

Well, the spec-like rules might actually help said new teams not be too embarrassing on their debuts. The 107% rule is no longer in place, though.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:47

I presume all teams that show up to a GP will race...no prequaly or anything

Last time round, pre-quali was only needed when there were more than 26 cars on the entry list. Since Qadbak was turned down, we don't even need to see if they would've reintroduced pre-quali for that purpose.

  • Joe in Fla28/10/2009 at 03:47

Well, the spec-like rules might actually help said new teams not be too embarrassing on their debuts. The 107% rule is no longer in place, though.

That was what I suspected, the watered-down F1 will be new-team-friendly

Well, the spec-like rules might actually help said new teams not be too embarrassing on their debuts. The 107% rule is no longer in place, though.

it isn't? So they can be seconds off the pace and still run. That could be........interesting

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:49

That was what I suspected, the watered-down F1 will be new-team-friendly

Most hurdles for new teams (like 107% and the entry bond) were removed, although 107% was abolished way back when one-shot quali was introduced in 2003.

it isn't? So they can be seconds off the pace and still run. That could be........interesting

Revenge of the F1 Rejects, quite possibly.

Rolling chicanes. I am looking forward to more cars on the grid

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 03:51

Revenge of the F1 Rejects, quite possibly.

Well, if everyone turns up at the first race, with their half-sorted cars, what if they are 7 seconds off the pole sitter time? I guess there will be overtaking......

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 03:51

Rolling chicanes. I am looking forward to more cars on the grid

But backmarkers are now trained to jump out of the way as quickly as possible - a far cry from as recent as the 1990s. We shall see if the newbies need time to learn that. ;)

I wish I was in charge of the Internets. I would make everybody reference GMT whenever talking about when something was on.

For example, instead of saying it was on at 8am in Sydney, they would have to add "which is GMT +11 at the time this event happens" to the end

oh. In this place they take normal crescent shared croissants and slice them them put a bit of cheese and ham in it then warm it til it melts. Very common actually, many places sell it like that.

There is a quite famous chain of UK places Pret a Manger which has exactly this thing. But with tomato as well. Very nice.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 08:06

Not that I'm aware of. Isn't GMT with daylight saving effectively BST?

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 08:06

Not that I'm aware of. Isn't GMT with daylight saving effectively BST?

    I guess?

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 08:19

    I guess?

Yeah... But GMT doesn't move that's the point of it.

London's time zone is not GMT but GMT + 0 or GMT +1 (BST)

Interestingly the reason for GMT is because of trains in America.

The reason for dailight savings is often ascribed to a guy who liked to ride his horse before breakfast and was upset by how so many other people didn't get the chance to enjoy the summer!!! Most countries in Europe have Summer time because of him. But the actual inventor was a Brit living in New Zealand called George Vernon Hudson.

The horse thing is obviously untrue! BST gives you less light in the mornings for horse riding fun.

I know it's all very strange. His crazy plan was to advance time by 20 minutes every week over Summer! So you'd never have a clue what was going on. He's also apparently the Great Great Grandfather of Coldplays Chris Martin... But of course that last bit is from Wikipedia so it's almost certainly a lie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Willett

"Why do you do what you do?"

I told my parents I have a blog so they can track me around Europe but I didn't tell them the URL. And I haven't updated in a long time.

my friend lives there and I was going to go visit her but when I was in NZ I spoke to a couple of friends who have recently returned from Europe and didn't get a chance to catch up with her because she works 24/7. So I might take it off my list because time is precious. The end. :D

As a blog reader, I would be interested to know if you were dropping one off your list. I'm sure you could stretch a couple of paragraphs out of that.

I'll see what I can drum up. But first, dinner. After I woke up after my creepy-Nico-nap I looked at my watch and saw it was 7.45 and I freaked out that I would be late for work because "wow I slept until morning!". But then I picked up my phone and it said PM and all was well.

Some people just have a talent. Why, they can make bits of white plastic into a story

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)28/10/2009 at 09:17

Well, yes. I don't want to overload him with information yet :)

I know my dad's first question would be "why do you do that", and then I would have to think of a reason

My wife has had to explain to my mother in law why I would want a subscription for a magazine that I only look at on a computer ... good luck to her!

    Hehehe.

The thing is not to be scared that you have nothing to say. And not to panic if you don't feel like writing loads. It just takes the right question or thought to kick off a post.

It could still be an interesting post. I'm sure you did do something, but if not, maybe talk about what it was like to go back there, whether it felt different or the same.

I have never lived in another country, so I can't imagine what that is like. Why don't you tell me? ;)

  • Amy28/10/2009 at 09:25

I would like to take this time to clear my sins and say I have had my Kindle for less than a week and I'm already reading a pirated book on it. Because I was half finished the paper version that I legitimately own but I am kind of hooked on reading in a MFC like way and Amazon won't sell me a Kindle copy.

Because I was half finished the paper version that I legitimately own but I am kind of hooked on reading in a MFC like way and Amazon won't sell me a Kindle copy.

    Here's a thought on Kindle and e-paper:

Often I print stuff out because I view a paper document differently to a computer screen. How do you view a Kindle? Like Paper or like a monitor?

Also, I have good eyesight but I need glasses to use a computer (my eyes get too tired). However I find that I can read for ages without glasses without sore eyes. Is the Kindle more like a book or a monitor in that sense?

Answers in a blog post please ;)

  • Alison28/10/2009 at 09:52

I think you should tell him that if it wasn't completely deflated and you put the plug back in, it could have been damaged in transit.

yes, I know I should. First I have to decide where to site tho!

I actually read something the other day that said a Kindle is easier to read than a book because the screen is totally flat whereas with a book the page curves in towards the spine so your eyes have to refocus a little on every line. I don't know if thats true. I shall elaborate in blog ;)

  • Amy28/10/2009 at 09:54

any of the 4 corners packages are great. I like Fangio on Sunday because I love watching all the grid prep and the podium, but a lot of people hate Fangio since theres no corners so everytime you see the cars they are at top speed. I think seeing the cars sitting on the grid and the drivers milling around running away from Brundle makes up for that, but obviously other people don't :D

Sounds like myth. I think that if you don't hold the Kindle perpendicular to your line of sight then the same thing will still happen.....

In fact thinking about it, unless you have some sort of autocue system, you're always going to have to refocus on what you're reading. It's normal.

Hmmm. Thanks for that. I was thinking the first corner, but I like your argument. I will look again.

although from memory my flatmates complaint at first corner was because of the twilight starting time if you are in the stand on the inside of the corner (Brabham) you are staring into the sun the whole time but the stand on the outside of it (Jones) should be fine.

She was thus very angry about the twilight race :D

A couple of articles have been posted on it, so I took a look at the FOTA site.

Remember the articles before that said all new teams have applied, with USF1 the only confirmed accepted team so far?

4 new teams, yet only 1 new logo. And not of the one who we thought was confirmed. Hmmm.

Did she refer to you as a flamin’ galah? Or is that more of an Australian thing?

The first word did start with F but it was not flamin'

I also didn't mention that I did have a second attempt but when you do that they average your two years worth of marks. And my second mark was good enough but my average wasn't. Boooo.

Oops I meant FOTA site ;)

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:47

I can't quite understand why Bernie gave them a 17 year deal, when it was obvious they couldn't even work out year 1.

Simple - to keep Silverstone out of the equation - for a long time. I think it was politically motivated.

Now there are some people speculating the money might've come from Mr E himself. Hmmm.

  • Christine28/10/2009 at 10:48

Okay, but Silverstone have been consistently in the news as much as Donington, so that didn't work, did it?

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:48

Oops I meant FOTA site ;)

I was about to say it's better than the USF1 site, but it seems to have made at least a little bit of progress at last:

Bernie really needs to be next on the chopping block, and his banker friends

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:49

Okay, but Silverstone have been consistently in the news as much as Donington, so that didn't work, did it?

But as long as Donington gets the deal, Silverstone is locked out, no matter how much publicity it got.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:49

Bernie really needs to be next on the chopping block, and his banker friends

Won't happen, sadly. Unless someone bigger than them buys it from them.

  • Christine28/10/2009 at 10:50

Yeah I know. I hate the way that works

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:50

He was, but that talk seems to have quieted down again. Looks like they couldn't agree on financial terms.

  • Christine28/10/2009 at 10:51

He was, but that talk seems to have quieted down again. Looks like they couldn't agree on financial terms.

Why would he bother to talk to them if he wants to lock them out?

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:51

F1 just doesn't embrace the internet that well.

:D Because the really good techie folks start their own thing rather than become employees.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 10:52

Why would he bother to talk to them if he wants to lock them out?

Perhaps because he had no other choice? So to minimize the damage, he milks them for what they're worth, and the BRDC says no.

It could possibly be just so Bernie can say he tried his best, but it wasn't good enough.

  • James28/10/2009 at 10:53

:D Because the really good techie folks start their own thing rather than become employees.

I'd do it for just for the fact its F1 although I would need to paid ;)

the river that Melbourne is so proud of is gross and brown

they say its because its a mud-bottomed river but everyone knows its just because its gross and dirty. They found some deformed fish living in there, thats how rancid it is.

Raikkonen and Massa both set six fastest laps and two second-fastest laps during the season. Raikkonen takes the Award by virtue of setting three third-fastest laps to Massa's two.

I remember helping to lay out that page/panel in a magazine. It was done before the final race, owing to print deadlines. Someone at the client (DHL) end insisted that Massa would be the recipient, so it all ended up having to be changed very late in the day.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 11:44

Yes, although numbers make my head spin (just ask my long-suffering accountant).

STOP! Do you really need that sandwich? Wouldn't you rather save the British Grand Prix?

Then send your lunch money to Simon Gillett. Remember, you may go hungry, but it will be worth it so you'll get to eat all the dodgy overpriced pies you want at the 2010 British Grand Prix :D

Don't send it to Gillett. He doesn't eat lunch anyway (he comes out in the night to drink blood from passing virgins). Send it to me as I'm going to run the British Grand Prix around the Malverns - "The English Spa" without a Tilke corner in sight.

Looks like groundhog day at NASA. They are at T-4 minutes and holding again/still. I assume things are not good as they have just switched to showing videos of yesterday when nothing happened. They are showing us all the various flight controllers sitting looking at their screens.

NASA and Gillett should combine forces, can you imagine the results? Well, I guess there wouldn't be any except for miles of column inches.

The weather is being unco-operative. Honest it is. The weather aircraft are re-fuelling. The current launch time is 1:15pm UK time although NASA TV reckon that the weather makes it more likely that the lauch wil be a bit nearer 2:30pm.

So we are in for a long wait before they even pull off the bit of string unless they have done that already.

I think NASA have stopped believeing their weather people. They are now planing to launch at 2:40 but will pull it orward if the weather clears. They must spend more than anyone on the planet on weather forecasting and they just admitted that they have no idea what is going to happen.

Yesterday we discussed how suitable that part of Florida is for launches. NASA just said that last night within 5 miles of the rocket there were 154 lightning strikes. That sounds like a really bad place to be to me.

should we be worried? the Renault site says there are 4 days and 3 hours until Abu Dhabi, Williams say 3 days and 22 hours and Force India say 4 days and 1 hour.

  • Maverick28/10/2009 at 14:47

did sidepodcast look at just driver websites or the teams as well?

Ferrari has improved as has Toyota for the most part although it, like Renault, takes an age to load, Williams still has the annoying bubbles - why? If they were annoying floaty f1 cars I could maybe understand it.

sounds like we should have another look during the off season :)

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 14:59

Finally someone at NASA who can speak correctly. Yesterday the kept talking about delays due to tribal electrification. I was pretty sure no-one ever electrified tribes but they were mis-treated so who knows.

Now that someone who can peak properly has said it I know they are talking about tribo electrification which is very different.

A major difference is the rocket's risk for triggering something called "tribo electrification." The phenomenon occurs when the booster travels through clouds and stimulates static electricity that can cause interference in onboard instruments. The shuttle has been proven immune to this risk.

already we have too much stuff to fit in, and that assumes no-one comes up with a single new idea.

    is the season over yet?

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:02

I just noticed the cost of this test flight to NASA as I closed the page. $445 million. How can it possibly cost that much? Most of the stuff on that rocket is not real. The whole top half of it is a dummy with some telemetry instruments. I think they need to sort out their purchasing.

  • RG28/10/2009 at 15:02

You'd be wasted on NASA :-)

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:08

You'd be wasted on NASA :-)

If I was running it I would not be planning launches with a 40% chance of good weather and I wouldn't pay $445 million to launch a dummy rocket on top of a shuttle booster than has flown 120 odd times.

  • Maverick28/10/2009 at 15:10

...and I wouldn't pay $445 million to launch a dummy rocket on top of a shuttle booster than has flown 120 odd times.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:17

Put like that, you would think that it wasn't, er, rocket science...

To me they are getting very little from this test. They know the booster works. They get confirmation that the way it is bolted on works and that it separates when it is supposed to. Other than that all they get is confirmation that their instruments work. They are paying a lot of money for very little.

The shuttle which is a far more complex machine and radically different to anything else they ever flew had to have a crew on board for its first test because there was no way to land it remotely. If they can do that with the shuttle there should be no reason not to do it with this.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:21

NASA now predicting 10 minutes of good weather. We may get a launch yet. The launch window closes in 40 minutes so if it doesn't fly by then they have to do it all again some other day.

  • The Boston Red Scott28/10/2009 at 15:22

there is a cool iphone app from nasa and it has ... well...almost everything i want, including a countrdown for the next launch. but the phone is busy with the video of ares right now...not that much is going on!

    What the heck is that???

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:23

You're right. Someone is definitely being paid by the hour for this silliness.

I remember one of the early astronauts being asked what he thought as he sat on top of a rocket for the first time. He replied that the one thought he couldn't get out of his head was that every piece had been supplied by the lowest bidder. Clearly he wouldn't need to worry about cost cutting now.

  • The Boston Red Scott28/10/2009 at 15:24

if you have to ask what something is, it's art.

The count will resume from T-4 minutes in 3 and half minutes. Weather is green and predicted to stay that way.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:26

they said "sep..." and that was it for me. i guess the nasa feed was dodgy.

good signal throughout the entire mission, 360 seconds post launch, we should be under the main parachute but the signal is LOST

  • The Boston Red Scott28/10/2009 at 15:38

upper stage water impact has been confirmed. but just the upper.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:38

well, they seem to be shaking hands and stuff in launch control, cheering, etc.

They got it up and they got separation so that is all they really wanted.

  • The Boston Red Scott28/10/2009 at 15:39

They got it up and they got separation so that is all they really wanted.

but the confirmation "may have been missed" on the audio channel

    "you all did frickin fantastic"

    shake and bake?

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:40

they said "sep..." and that was it for me. i guess the nasa feed was dodgy.

Mine went on exactly the same syllable.

They are now reporting upper stage water impact. It was due to hit first as it is just a dummy so they planned to let it hit the water and sink. Clearly they didn't want to spend more on parachutes than necessary.

  • Steven Roy28/10/2009 at 15:41

I took them three years to stick something on top of a shuttle booster?

Does anyone not doubt that Rubens is going to Williams and Nico is going to Brawn? It would be useful to know who much of this gossip is believed.

Does anyone not doubt that Rubens is going to Williams and Nico is going to Brawn? It would be useful to know who much of this gossip is believed.

Nobody doubts that. That's the most solid rumour after the Alonso to Ferrari one.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:17

Thanks so that makes rumours of Nico to Mercedes only a remote possibility. I am not convinced that Macca will fork out what Kimi+management want, so unless they drop their demands I cannot see Kimi at Woking.

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:23

It makes a lot of sense to see Kimi at McLaren. And a lot of people want to see Kimi at McLaren. But that doesn't make it so.

The only facts about Kimi are:

    1) There is no way Kimi left Ferrari without knowing where he was going next

    2) Toyota made a play for him and he didn't bite

So... Where does that leave us? A lot of people say that means he's going to McLaren. It doesn't make it so.

Three possible fits with the facts are:

    1) He is going to McLaren

    2) He is going to another team?!?!?

    3) He's going rallying

    4) He has decided to retire / take a year off

I still like option 1 the best, but liking something doesn't make it so.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:32

    1) There is no way Kimi left Ferrari without knowing where he was going next

I thought similarly at first, but I am not so sure now. We know Kimi+Management wanted 25 million Euro as contract buyout (that seems fairly clear initial expectation). I think Ferrari said sure, if you do not drive for another team next year. If he drives for another team his payout is considerably less. So Kimi is wanting any new team to match his Ferrari payout.

Personally I think Lewis will so outperform Kimi that he will look as if he should have retired. My reasoning, Felipe scored more than double the points Kimi had scored up to the point of the accident this season. Few people consider Massa in the same category as Lewis, hence Kimi will probably look hardly better than Kovy.

  • lou28/10/2009 at 19:33

This discounts the fact that Kimi and Massa like different kinds of cars. Lewis and Kimi like the same kinds of cars.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:38

Rubens is staying at Brawn.. as is Jenson... not that i'm biased... :)

That would be my hope, sadly hope and reality do not necessarily coincide. Having said that my new work premises for next year are much better than I had thought or hoped for - as I got to see them today and I am very excited. I almost entirely got my way with influencing the architect and contractor to designing the facility I will be managing. It looks absolutely stunning!

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:39

    Ah... I see... Excellent!

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:39

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:41

This discounts the fact that Kimi and Massa like different kinds of cars. Lewis and Kimi like the same kinds of cars.

That is true - do you really think Ferrari would have designed a car more suited for their number 2 (and cheaper driver) than their number one. Other point is Kimi has stipulated a maximum number of publicity appearances for the team (which is a lot fewer than would normally be expected of an F1 driver). It did not go down very well with Macca.

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:43

That is true - do you really think Ferrari would have designed a car more suited for their number 2 (and cheaper driver) than their number one.

Yes... Massa favours the Schumacher and Badoer style.

    But without Ron?

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:47

Yes... Massa favours the Schumacher and Badoer style.

Didn't show with Badoer - but it is a valid point and I think it should suit Alonso's style as well.

Martin certainly has a more relaxed management style than Ron but they still like to work their drivers on the image building. If Kimi has to do less than Lewis, Lewis will be upset (and rightly so). I think Lewis and Kimi are not right as team mates. Still think Lewis will slaughter Kimi.

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:48

Didn't show with Badoer - but it is a valid point and I think it should suit Alonso's style as well.

I know he's slower in total but they always said the reason he was supported so long was because if they listened to Badoer Michael would be happy.

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:50

Not saying he won't, but it will be interesting.

I for one would like as my ideal offering for next year...

    Brawn - Same

    Red Bull - Same

    Ferrari - Alonso + Massa

    McLaren - Lewis + Kimi

And for all 4 teams to be close.

I think that would be a pretty good season.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:53

I know he's slower in total but they always said the reason he was supported so long was because if they listened to Badoer Michael would be happy.

As I understand it Michael is not very good at car set-up so they often used Rubens advice/setup.

  • Alex Andronov28/10/2009 at 19:53

So what excitement is everyone up to this evening?

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 19:54

That is certainly not the eight best drivers on the grid.

If you were to travel 2000 years into the past, how useful would you be in jumpstarting technological advancements? This 10 question quiz will help you figure out your technological usefulness.

    FACT!

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 20:08

Don't forget Glock in that Renault *bias mode on*

    Here is my thoughts

I think Kimi will sit out the year or try rallying (and get the full Ferrari pay out - he seems to like money)

Brawn Jenson and Nico (sad that Rubens is going since Mercedes will get their way)

Red Bull (same as this year)

    Ferrari (announce Felipe and Fernando)

McLaren Lewis and Nick (Mercedes gets a German driver, Lewis does not have Nico or Kimi as a team mate and will be happy and Martin in his own words gets the most under-rated F1 driver at a bargain basement price)

Williams Rubens and new Nico (Weber has let it out).

Toyota (who knows - except they will end up with Kamui if he does well this weekend)

Force India (same as at the end of this year)

    Renault (Robert and Timo)

BMW Sauber (won't be on the grid) - Sorry RG.

Toro Rosso - keep Buemi and will only keep Tim if he brings good sponsorship

Jarno and Kovy will be joining new teams - Jarno Lotus, and I think Kovy may get a seat at Manor.

  • Jon Waldock28/10/2009 at 20:08

    Slightly dangerous, but awesome

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 20:14

So say you have 4 teams like that 8 slots... which drivers do you put in?

For a starter Mark is certainly not a top eight. He is mediocre and something of a liability on the track. Nick is a much more talented driver. Not sure that Felipe is really a top eight either - somewhat scruffy driver that is faster than he should be. Vettel cannot overtake - same as last year but is seriously fast but I think the Red Bull was easily the best overall package this year, especially once they got the double diffuser. I still think Timo and Robert are as good as the eight you mention.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 20:21

I do love how that comes posts after I called him the 9th best driver on the grid :D

I am not convinced Nico is as good as Nick - he has had terrible luck in the last three races.

Singapore - he was flying in qualifying - definately would have been top four then Rubens crashes and yellow flags. Then they find the car fractionally underwight due to a mistake with the ballast - then Suttil T-bones him.

Japan - was in a strong fourth place ahead of Kimi and a long pitstop drops him behind Kimi and then a safety car came out and Nico cheated by speeding through the yellow flags so dropped again.

Brazil - like other drivers (Vettel and Hamilton) his qualifying did not go well. From 18th on grid he got to 10th and was 2/10ths faster than Vettel (who finished fourth) but the team did not get any fuel into his tank. Certainly fourth of fifth could have been secured.

  • Jon Waldock28/10/2009 at 20:24

How long a cable do you need? Play.com seem to do one which is 30m and another which is 50m long

    No hammer?

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 20:43

Just my thoughts on the best 8 drivers

but would have though Jenson at the end of last year after scoring only three points?

Best two drivers are Lewis and Fernando, I would say Fernando better but this could change if Lewis made fewer mistakes.

Thereafter I cannot say. I think Robert is as good as Kimi and I think Nick is as good as Jenson. I am sure Timo is as good as Nico. I cannot really place Vettel since he cannot overtake - he probably is as good as Massa who is not a great overtaker.

I think that is probably my top 10 - but Jarno can drive fast - he was faster than Fernando when they were team mates until Flavio stuffed him around. I am sure Sutil is very fast but he makes too many mistakes - similar situation for Buemi.

You have my sympathy. This week (all week) we have had someone about 50 yards away from our building extracting rivets from timbers on a bridge with an air powered tool. It's really loud & continuous & annoying & we don't know when it will end

Anyone here heard of Pippa Man?

    Yes.

She's a British racing driver in Indy Lights this year (feeder series to Indycars).

I like to join fan clubs and groups for up and coming racing drivers - it's my way of supporting these guys and finding out what they are up to. I especially follow the lady racers because I would love to see one become really successful.

So anyway, I joined the Pippa Mann fan club the other day because she sounds quite cool (she tweets too). Didn't think much of it other than I might get the odd e-mail.

So my wife picks up today's post and tells me there is a letter from London. At first I thought it was a card for my birthday but I couldn't think who would have sent it...

So I open it up - and it's a letter personally signed by Pippa Mann thanking me for my support and enclosed was a signed picture too. :D

How cool is that? What a great idea!

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 20:56

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 21:04

just catching up on comments.. on this from last night:

i guess it's just a matter of inconsistency, especially with USF1. i remember yesterday reading peter windsor saying that they'll do a reality TV show for their driver selection programme. we've heard nothing about that since - what happened? at the very least, i'd expect a working website, which they don't even have right now.

They said they'd do a reality show but they never said when. For all we know it could be being recorded now and broadcast in March.

  • Andy Taylor28/10/2009 at 21:04

Well I am only using this one because the Acer Aspire is being used as a video player right now (watching F2 on the big TV). So later I'll try it on that. I did try Moblin, which looks nice, but doesn't work!

Moblin is too much of a developmental prototype - I could not get Open Office to work on it and gave up in disgust. It will get there but it is clearly more for keeping all your personal computing cloud together. If that is what you want then gOS is currently a better bet.

Have you heard its only 33/1 on that the Newcastle stadium could be called the Greggs Stadium?

    Tastier stadium ever.

  • Nick28/10/2009 at 21:25

Ok, i will give you a verbal rundown...

I sat in the sun for a bit whch was nice

Then went to a mall and had lunch under a fake sky...

Followed by a quick jaunt though egyptian halls and under Persian and indian domes, before i passed a chinese ship...

I soon moved onto another mall... (where the ferrari and macca were)

Alison wasnt all that impressed with the sun earlier so I went for a quick ski in the snow for 2 hours...

i then got on a train with no driver before meeting my friend and had beers on the beach at sunset...

It was a great day, but it looses a little without the pics ;)

  • Jon Waldock28/10/2009 at 21:25

Tell me about it. They ain't happy those Newcastle fans, and instead of important stories, they put the fact its changing the name of the stadium on the front of the evening chronicle

did you go to dubai or disneyland?

hehe It all sounds a little crazy but i have the pics!

  • Pat W28/10/2009 at 21:28

It was a great day, but it looses a little without the pics ;)

You can't possibly have had time to do all that.

  • Jon Waldock28/10/2009 at 21:29

Tell me about it. They ain't happy those Newcastle fans, and instead of important stories, they put the fact its changing the name of the stadium on the front of the evening chronicle

I used to be a newcastle fan (when i didnt know better and was easily led) and even i'd be livid if they changed the name.

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 21:30

So i wake up and come to work and catch up on last nights comments and the first i see is no more gino! Could this be the best day ever?

Not bad for a Thursday. ;)

  • Nick28/10/2009 at 21:30

Do you get to experience the UAE at all? ;-)

    Excess Excess and Excess?

Ive covered the first two but decided to save visiting the worlds tallest building for another day ;)

  • Paul28/10/2009 at 21:31

Have you found a GP ticket yet?

Its amazing what happens without doohickey ;)

  • Nick28/10/2009 at 21:32

No chance... i know people who are going to just the concerts though :(

No re entry so i cant just use them for the race

  • lou28/10/2009 at 21:33

No re entry so i cant just use them for the race

:( so they couldn't just go for the concert and you for the race?

  • RG28/10/2009 at 21:34

I used to be a newcastle fan (when i didnt know better and was easily led) and even i'd be livid if they changed the name.

Same with spurs, we are going with a new sponsor. Seen a few things on the internet where its asking you to chip in a few quid to keep it as White Hart Lane

  • Journeyer28/10/2009 at 21:34

No chance... i know people who are going to just the concerts though :(

    That's stupid. Really is.

staggering. i would move if my connection was that slow.

to outer Mongolia perhaps? We were recently asked how to improve our scientific output so I suggested relocating to North Sentinel Island so we would have improved Internet access - he did not find it very humourous.

This is the country where homing pigeons are proven to be faster than the internet in getting big files to users.

  • Rich28/10/2009 at 22:17

Ah, the open plan place you were talking about before..

Its open plan for the post grads and actually I do have my own office as in there is a glass door - we were kept in the dark as to what it would be like - I drew all of the floor plans including the curvy tables and the high roof I - everywhere else in the building it is boring cubicles. It is also partionable with folding glass doors so it can be opened up or made into discrete teaching areas depending on group size. But the six data projectors needed is a bit alarming.

  • startledbunny28/10/2009 at 22:18

hehe same i have way too many for the hours in the day i can spend listening to them so consequently i am behind in many.

i created a playlist for my ipod (albert, remember?) i call it my daily soundwave. a mix of albums and podcasts. it's up to 17 hours at the moment. it was up to a day long at one point.

I have read though his comments quite a lot and i am sure 8 of those people just post

"spot on james" or "great post james" on each and every one

  • me28/10/2009 at 22:36

"spot on james" or "great post james" on each and every one

he should offer them to the most insightful, or those who's questions he couldn't answer.

Anyone going to buy james allens book? It appears to be 99% stuff you could read for free on his blog…

He must be short of a bob-or-two since losing the commentary gig?

The book in a sense smells of pure laziness.

Indeed. All the way to Paris for a link, that's dedication.

  • Alianora La Canta28/10/2009 at 22:44

    Less so 2003. I bet you didn’t think of Brazil 2003. {Comment #823}

Even Eddie didn't think of Brazil 2003 - in the team principals' meeting on the Friday of that particular weekend, EJ attempted to back up his stance that costs were too high in F1 (some things never change...) by saying that no privateer team was ever going to win another F1 race...

  • startledbunny28/10/2009 at 22:44

That's why I needed to do the trailer :)

    lol at bassano.

should have had Mr C's waving hand from Sidepodradio though ;)

iTunes must be the spawn of the devil. I absolutely LOATH it, it's just too overblown, and Apple must be stopped from making it compulsory for updates to iPods on Windows. Basically, to have a working iPod without hassle you need a Mac.

I'm not sure that's true, although I wouldn't mind. Have you ever tried reinstalling iTunes on a machine running Vista? It took me over an hour the other day.

i took a quizy thing earlier to win an acer laptop, but when i finished it, it put me into a draw for £500 instead....i went "oooh, i could buy a mac instead of having to sell the acer that i wouldnt want ;)"

Anything Apple makes should stay on an Apple surface. Anything Apple makes for Windows AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Quicktime's gob*****, Safari's inexcusably laughable, and iTunes I've mentioned is like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs humping at your hard-earned expense.

  • lou28/10/2009 at 23:09

    <3 Lou :)

i honestly really want a mac, each time i go into an apple store, or even pass one i'm transfixed by the awesomeness... one shiny awesome macbook pro would be lovely..

ouch! next year is going to be an expensive one!!! i will probably need a mac though... well not need... but really really like one for uni, seeing as i'm hoping to do photography..

    You'll need Aperture as well.

If i bought a Mac, i'd have to guy logic too, so thats another £100+...i wonder if i can live for a term on £300?

You need that for the first week! (Don't worry, it gets cheaper after that)

  • guille2306 (back in Bariloche)28/10/2009 at 23:22

The one i'm on right now was £400 and it was quite a decent spec for that price

I needed 3DS Max for the 3D Design module I was doing, as I couldn't make it in to the university often enough to use the machines that had it. The lecturer actually actively said "go download it".

True, but they're not workflow tools (except Lightroom). Have you seen Pixelmator? Beautiful, powerful and less than £40

    boo. i’m pretty nothing has changed their end, presumably you’ve tried all browser / another machine? {Comment #1032}

Tried IE, Firefox and Opera on this machine. Yet to try any other machines. The trouble is that I'm not sure there's much point if it's going to break on me every single time I want to do anything with it...

understood. it really isn't broken. joe's been blogging today for example, but it's probably more effort than it's worth to figure it out.

  • Turkey Machine28/10/2009 at 23:26

3ds student licence is less than £70 isn't it?

They don't do student licences, and I wasn't granted permission to "borrow" a licence the university had for my use. I went and acquired it by other means. Should really uninstall it though, I haven't used it since.

both christine and i have pixelmator licences too.

Aperture is a workflow tool, it doesn't replace Photoshop, it works alongside it. I've moved from just using Photoshop to Aperture and Photoshop Elements. Aperture manages my photos so I don't have to remember which folder contains originals and where my edited pictures are.

  • me28/10/2009 at 23:29

    it certainly is :)

  • Turkey Machine28/10/2009 at 23:31

they used to up until v7. wonder why they stopped?

Probably because they weren't making any money out of it. The standard that year was Max 2008.

maya is free for non-commercial use too, right. or did they change that too?

Maya's completely different to Max, Blender also. I've yet to see a Blender GUI that resembles Max both aesthetically and functionally.

Autodesk recently lost a case in the US where they tried to stop someone selling used copies of their software. He argued that what he was doing was perfectly legal because he wasn't installing the software himself and then selling on the discs. The judge agreed and threw out the case.

It's not. It makes organising pictures so much easier and faster. Next time you find yourself in an Apple Store, ask for a demonstration.

I don't think so. I was being lazy and couldn't be bothered walking round a table to pick something up. I leaned over it, slipped and pushed my knee sideways against a chair. It must have been pretty funny to watch. I'll probably walk round next time ;)
