It is the 300th day of the year today, which is a nice round number. I approve. It's also Tuesday, which means we're well underway in the week now. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Toyota are supposed to be making their decision over Timo Glock today, although the medical reports so far have apparently not been particularly hopeful. If he cannot race, Kobayashi will get another chance behind the wheel.
  • It also appears that Donington's final deadline has actually passed now and they must be in some sort of legal troubles. Damon Hill has said he is confident they can sort something out for Silverstone.
  • Raikkonen has said he's hoping to have a good result in Abu Dhabi this weekend so that he can leave Ferrari on a high. Still no word on what his plans are for the future, but perhaps even he hasn't made up his mind yet.

That'll do it for now. Don't forget the Sidepodcompetition, and if you want something to listen to, F1 Debrief is all edited up and ready for consumption. I'll see you in the comments.

Am remaining hopeful. Glock's boss says he's 90% certain he'll race, and I trust him

  • Turkey Machine27/10/2009 at 00:18

I'm listening to the podcast as I type. Nice timing!

How serious was Glock's injury that there's been next to no reports about it and his recovery?

  • RG27/10/2009 at 00:21

How serious was Glock's injury that there's been next to no reports about it and his recovery?

Questionable story really. All we know is its a broken vertabrae and thats it. Not how bad it is, I'm guessing as he's going in for more check ups, its not a serious injury. Toyota have been so unhelpful.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 00:21

Gavin left too late. I got the Linux running from USB !!

  • Nick27/10/2009 at 00:21

Right i am all checked in for my flight and have my bags down... now to pack!

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 00:25

How serious was Glock's injury that there's been next to no reports about it and his recovery?

He has a couple of fissures in his vertebrae. That was the report in Brazil. I haven't seen anything since

Toyota have been poor over this, just realised nothing. Only info we have got so far has come from Timo and his manager.

How is Alphonso? Wil he live?

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 00:54

How is Alphonso? Wil he live?

Grrrrr!! Yes he will live. Whoever scraped the corner must have damaged the front left tyre though as when I came out of work, that one was flat. I had to change it. :(

Yeah. It was about 10pm. I didn't come straight home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a proper spare tyre in the boot. My last car only had a stupid space saver....

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 01:01

Yeah. It was about 10pm. I didn't come straight home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a proper spare tyre in the boot. My last car only had a stupid space saver....

One of the advantages of having a small car is it is much easier to change the wheels

  • Turkey Machine27/10/2009 at 01:01

If it doesn't have space for a spare tyre, the vehicle's illegal IIRC.

  • lou27/10/2009 at 01:01

Yeah. It was about 10pm. I didn't come straight home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a proper spare tyre in the boot. My last car only had a stupid space saver....

:( ah no. well at least as you say there was a spare tyre. i remember having to help dad one night when we came out of a restaurant and found we had a flat tyre. that wasn't fun either.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 01:02

If it doesn't have space for a spare tyre, the vehicle's illegal IIRC.

The spare does not need to be full width to be legal

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 01:03

If it doesn't have space for a spare tyre, the vehicle's illegal IIRC.

A space saver is a spare tyre. It's just a temporary one. You're only allowed to drive on it a maximum of 50 miles at 40mph or something like that. It's jsut to get you home/to a garage to get it changed.

  • Pat W27/10/2009 at 01:03

Yeah. It was about 10pm. I didn't come straight home. I was pleasantly surprised to find a proper spare tyre in the boot. My last car only had a stupid space saver....

ooh, night time tyre changing isn't fun. was it a proper tyre or a 'get you home' tyre?

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 01:04

ooh, night time tyre changing isn't fun. was it a proper tyre or a 'get you home' tyre?

Proper tyre which made me happy! I guess I still need to buy a new one though as I now have no spare....

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 01:04

I'm now home (again), i have a few points to summerise....

    1. I've been in the car for 3.5 hours today, thats no fun at all.

    2. I'm now home and realise that i've forgotten my medication...can we all guess what it does? Yes thats right, sends me to sleep!!

3rd and finally... I still can't quite get my head around the fact that Les Dennis was in High School Musical - The Musical.

    Evening/Morning all

  • Pat W27/10/2009 at 01:06

Proper tyre which made me happy! I guess I still need to buy a new one though as I now have no spare....

Good stuff, but yes, the expense is annoying

  • RG27/10/2009 at 01:06

3rd and finally... I still can't quite get my head around the fact that Les Dennis was in High School Musical - The Musical.

That amuses me. Any Family Fortunes references?

    hey btw

3rd and finally... I still can't quite get my head around the fact that Les Dennis was in High School Musical - The Musical.

you saw high school musical- the musical? you poor thing!! that's one hell of a day! i'm so sorry for you.

i you didn't drive on the flat one (like i did), they might be able to patch it up.

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 01:07

i couldnt stop thinking about those the whole way through, oh and if anyones seen the extra's episode with him in, it makes the whole thing so much better!! aaah, comedic genius

  • Turkey Machine27/10/2009 at 01:07

3rd and finally… I still can’t quite get my head around the fact that Les Dennis was in High School Musical – The Musical.

That's enough to screw with anybody's mind.

Night all, I'm off to catch some sleep in the land of nod and V12 engine noises. I'll check this again in 12 hours when I remembered I posted at some stupid hour! :D

  • Pat W27/10/2009 at 01:08

    Evening/Morning all

    Hi Jon.

    1. That's fine - if you are driving.

    2. Drink hot chocolate (made with milk not water), turn lights down, listen to Sigur Ros, go to bed.

There is no 3, I ignore it, it can't be possible.

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 01:08

i you didn't drive on the flat one (like i did), they might be able to patch it up.

I don't think I did. My theory is that I had a slow leak caused when it got bashed earlier. I think it slowly went down while I was at work. I can't guarantee it didn't happen on the way though......

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 01:08

i you didn't drive on the flat one (like i did), they might be able to patch it up.

I have done that more than once when I couldn't find somewhere I was happy to stop

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 01:08

you saw high school musical- the musical? you poor thing!! that's one hell of a day! i'm so sorry for you.

you'd be surprised at how actually awesome it is. if you get past the vastly rediculousness of it, then its actually quite good

    Night TM

you're trademarking the shorthand for goodnight?

    bernie-esque.

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 01:11

Good stuff, but yes, the expense is annoying

I'm doubly annoyed as I also have a scratch to get repaired on the same corner that happened today while it was parked at my house. Methinks the two incidents must be related..... Either that or Alphonso's having a very bad day :P

  • lou27/10/2009 at 01:12

you'd be surprised at how actually awesome it is. if you get past the vastly rediculousness of it, then its actually quite good

i refuse to watch high school musical. it would send me insane i think... so the idea of high school musical-the musical scares me... alot...

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 01:12

you're trademarking the shorthand for goodnight?

It's mine ;) just like Scott in Italy (who's no longer in italy) says Ciao, and Stuart C says "Audi-os"

Night TM is now my thing.

Oi you, I hold all rights to "TM", "Turkey Machine", and related entities, mainly because nobody else is stupid enough to own it! ;)

You may have seen me about. I frequent many other sites, few know my real name and ye shall not say it if ya knows it. And now I'm DEFINITELY off to bed, I should not be around here. It's bad for the psyche! :D

i think its more barable as a musical actually, because you expect people to break out into song every so often, not so much in films

Ye gods, I forgot about that. I never actually got to the WSBR, cos I couldn't find my tickets, so I stayed in London with friends instead. I found them 3 weeks later hiding down the back of a cabinet. Seething doesn't cover it, I swore rather loudly at the time.

I think the main reason is the monopoly of Etisalat. They only have 1 telecoms provider there. And therefore the internet is really slow and expensive. But international calls are even more expensive. So this is a way of keeping revenue up.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:24

    Morning, everyone.

Was a bit bored when I got home from our offsite this morning, so I decided to look back and read the 2009 season preview issue a while ago (duly autographed by this year's top 4 drivers).

Here are some of the highlights of my reading:

    1. (page 12) "At the wheel, Fernando Alonso is putting miles on the R29 and early indications show he could be a contender for the title again this year."

    2. (page 18) "Peter Windsor: The [USF1] driver selection programme will be part of the story this year, and we'll make it a reality TV programme."

    3. (pages 20-21) The entire article of "The Saga of Honda's Race to Find a Buyer", including all the rumors - from Kallakis and Richards, to Slim and Telmex. Oh, and Branson too.

    4. (page 23) Anthony Davidson: "I would put money on McLaren and Ferrari being at the front in Melbourne."

    5. (page 35) Murray Walker: "Ron Dennis can rightly be described at Britain's answer to Enzo Ferrari." (Of course, by Sepang, he had announced a sudden departure from the racing team.)

    6. (pages 40-41) Feature: My Life in F1 - Pat Symonds (No mention of Singapore 2008, though...)

    7. (page 42) No separate article on Brawn GP in F1 Racing's 2009 Season Preview - probably the only major outlet without an article (as I remember Autosport and Top Gear mags covering Brawn GP)

    8. (page 49) Alan Jones: "If the Renault goes like it looks, then Alonso has no chance."

Hehe. And I'm not done reading yet! :D

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:24

Oooh - bad formatting... Oh well.

Oooh - bad formatting... Oh well.

Well at least Jonsey got it right

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:39

Well at least Jonsey got it right

In fact, he was about the only guy that it got it right with Alonso.

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 06:39

Oooh - bad formatting... Oh well.

Always tricky looking back. For the SofaF1 championship we have to predict each race and pole sitter but also right at the beginning of the season before a single practice session (at melbourne, but after pre-season testing) we have to predict the person with the most poles, the top eight of the drivers championship and who will get their maiden win).

Nobody had Jenson for most poles, nobody predicted Webber for maiden win, and only 3 had Jenson anywhere in the top eight.

Because it was the view of about 20 well informed F1 fans saying what they thought a week before the season began it does give you a good indication of how much of a shock it was.

It's always hard to remember what you thought. Because lots of people will think back and think, "well we knew that the Brawns were going to be strong."

that's why I think people should take part each year, mainly because of that pre-season marker in the sand.

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 06:41

Boo. For the next three weeks the second half of my inbound commute is underground. No doohicky :(

Because it was the view of about 20 well informed F1 fans saying what they thought a week before the season began it does give you a good indication of how much of a shock it was.

That's an interesting one, because looking back with hindsight, it was all there to see. Brawn was awsome, Mclaren were terrible, both in pre-season and in the real season.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 06:42

Boo. For the next three weeks the second half of my inbound commute is underground. No doohicky :(

    How long is the commute?

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:42

It's always hard to remember what you thought. Because lots of people will think back and think, "well we knew that the Brawns were going to be strong."

The thing with Brawn was, they were mighty quick in February, but a lot of people weren't sure if their pace was real, or if they were just looking for sponsorship money. But when you look at their pace in long runs, it really looked very encouraging, impressive even.

As for RBR, more than a few said they'd have serious pace, but most people assumed Vettel would crush Webber - and that didn't happen this season at all.

Wait - Jenson still has most poles this season? Impressive.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:43

That's an interesting one, because looking back with hindsight, it was all there to see. Brawn was awesome, McLaren were terrible, both in pre-season and in the real season.

But no one wanted to believe it because it went against accepted belief. And more than a few reminded us of Prost being impressive in 2001 preseason testing, only for it to fall apart at Melbourne.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 06:47

But no one wanted to believe it because it went against accepted belief. And more than a few reminded us of Prost being impressive in 2001 preseason testing, only for it to fall apart at Melbourne.

Exactly. I was about to say something about the Prost thing. Interesting isn't it? Also all that talk about Mclaren sandbagging :D

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 06:48

Grrrr. I have to wait around at work until 6pm just to plug a fibre connector into a network swtich.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:48

Exactly. I was about to say something about the Prost thing. Interesting isn't it? Also all that talk about Mclaren sandbagging :D

McLaren sandbagging - what a crazy thought. I remember them barely being able to get past Q1 in the first half of the season.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 06:50

McLaren sandbagging - what a crazy thought. I remember them barely being able to get past Q1 in the first half of the season.

Yep, but that was all the talk pre-season. I guess it was so hard to believe they had got it so wrong.

I would like to see a true explanation of what went on with the MP4/24. Such an amazing transformation of a bad car.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 06:52

I would like to see a true explanation of what went on with the MP4/24. Such an amazing transformation of a bad car.

I guess they managed to leave themselves a lot of room to improve on it. Look at Renault - their start wasn't as awful as McLaren's, but the improvements just didn't come.

I wonder though. It looked like the car was just fundamentally bad. Like the Honda in 2008. Must have been something there that was wrong that they managed to change. Or was it a combination of things?

They had talked about something wrong with the rear of the car in the preseason. I suspect their significant funds, plus the invention of the double-diffuser, solved McLaren's problems.

The 2009 regulations played it's part, McLaren's interpretation wasn't as good as Brawn's, especially with the Double Diffuser issue.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 06:59

I'm going to try a couple of things tonight to check. Ran it off the CD very well though!

Well, I downloaded the latest ISO from the Mint web site, but just ran the batch file, and it created everything and worked fine. So, you might have a dodgy USB stick. Or you could also try it on another PC? It works for me on my HP laptop.

  • Paul27/10/2009 at 07:00

The 2009 regulations played it's part, McLaren's interpretation wasn't as good as Brawn's, especially with the Double Diffuser issue.

    Ahhhh. That makes sense.

  • Kathi27/10/2009 at 07:15

Well I am not sure how to do that. But I have another USB Sdrive I can try and also I will try a slot on the back of the computer...

boot mint through the cd, install usb-creator (open terminal, type: sudo apt-get install usb-creator)

I'm not familiar with mint but it is based on ubuntu so my guess is the programme will show up under system - administration

To access the iso file you just mount the partition it is on (That is click it in the file manager.)

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 07:15

Oh they did? I missed that. I didn't know they actually designated a B-spec

I'm not sure they actually called it that... But at one point the wheelbase changed!

But I thought they had a long and short-wheelbase version of the same car, then they could use either version at any given race?

You keep saying that! But I have some sort of problem reading the disk, so I'll try a new disk and then a USB slot. If neither works, I shall try Kathi's method...

#MFC Changes in the Language of the Internet means that web addresses may now contain non-latin characters.

Quote: "Of the 1.6 billion internet users today worldwide, more than half use languages that have scripts that are not Latin-based,"

Hopefully this will make the internet more accessible then?

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 07:36

I thought of you on Friday Journeyer when I was completing the development report for Q3. It reminded me of your question about how you manage innovation in the workplace.

In the 13 weeks of Q3 our two man development team, launched 13 projects. Small incremental changes R us.

(although one of those projects was the modifications to make the intranet run without state, and the migration from Server and SQL Server from 2000 to 2008).

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 07:37

In the 13 weeks of Q3 our two man development team, launched 13 projects. Small incremental changes R us.

Nicely done. :D So your two-man development team focused solely on these 13 projects? Or were they done as on-top work?

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 07:38

Plus all of those who do not have access yet because they can't read or write in a Latin alphabet?

But there's already tons of Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Indian sites out there. How many of them wouldn't really be able to access it yet solely due to a language barrier?

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 07:45

Nicely done. :D So your two-man development team focused solely on these 13 projects? Or were they done as on-top work?

Well no that was their job. But it comes back to what I was talking about at the time with this. There job was to do giant project X. They did the minimum to create a platform, and then launched that, then added feature after feature after feature.

This is part of the culture here and because of it everything is very innovative. Because the business can help steer the project and help with testing and so on. Rather than the usual separation of one from the other.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 07:47

We're starting to try and merge it into a single cohesive culture. We've gotten management backing, so that's a great help. Still a long way to go, though.

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 07:50

We're starting to try and merge it into a single cohesive culture. We've gotten management backing, so that's a great help. Still a long way to go, though.

Part of it is just getting the product out with them. Ship early and often. People will soon give you your feedback loop. Its just that in the old model you had ironed out all of the kinks and things and worked on it for months and then a user says, "shouldn't it be more like that" and you have to say, "well it can't be because to change that would take another 3 months. Whereas here the worst you'd have to do is go back a week.

I just noticed that we had 4 man weeks of holiday during that 13 week period. No wonder it seemed so busy!

Quite a lot, I would have guessed.

I don't know - I just think that allowing a totally non-latin way of accessing the internet breaks down barriers.

I would agree that it does, but only to a certain extent. Ultimately, it's still the financial barrier that is the biggest issue.

Depends on your responsibility towards the clients

  • Amy27/10/2009 at 08:14

Ooooo. That me be brave, putting Windows 7 on a VAIO. Does it have all the drivers?

its the official Sony upgrade kit so as well as the Windows 7 dic there is a Vaio Windows 7 Supplementary Disc. So I hope so.

And no I haven't done it because I fell asleep waiting for my recovery discs. Must have caught my flatmates jet lag, she just got back from New York.

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 08:15

Depends on your responsibility towards the clients

Perhaps. Given the industry (Banking) I work in some client facing things are incredibly sensitive and of course there can be no room for error. And yet the tools you provide to drill into data and the layers through which you present the data can be changed reasonably safely because you are secure in the platform. You do have to be careful.

One issue is that legally we have to treat all clients equally so we can't do closed betas with particular clients. So that forces us to go with things that can be opted into, but anyone can opt in.

  • Amy27/10/2009 at 08:15

Hehe. And I'm not done reading yet! :D

yeah they went to press before the announcement of the team being saved and its not even like they left a 'this team might be here' its just like they don't exist at all. And Fisi is suddenly the 'only man on the grid to come to every race in Melbourne'

i.e. Toyota would rather run Kobayashi. Who was it that said after Glock crashed in Japan quali that Singapore was his last race for Toyota?

    I didn't........ (okay, maybe I thought it).

Gutted really. Toyota probally using some clever words just to say thanks Timo, but you ain't needed anymore. Conspiracy theory here, although the accident was not on purpose, it did seem an ideal opportunity after it was revealed Toyota haven't signed him on for 2010. Am guessing the team didn't want him if he was leaving.

I still want to know from Toyota what medical adivce and opinions they heard, I still feel left in the dark over this.

I have no idea, latest rumours are Waters of Mars will air the 14th November.

I'm following the filming of Eleven, and it is looking good so far :)

Well that is sooner than I thought. Means a great big fat gap before the last one though.

  • Lukeh27/10/2009 at 10:54

I'll take 6 week gap if it doesn't mean another 6 month wait!

  • Christine27/10/2009 at 10:57

But sarah jane is rrrrrrrubbish :(

It is! I watched the first series and only liked the one about the lasers. Rrrrubbish.

  • James27/10/2009 at 10:57

I agree, but it has the Doctor in so is worth a watch I think :)

Well that is sooner than I thought. Means a great big fat gap before the last one though.

Well we get that, the one at Christmas and then End of Time sometime after. We may get the new series which is being called series 1 between February and March! :)

  • Alex Andronov27/10/2009 at 10:58

The long gap for this year has annoyed me because we also only get specials which is a bit annoying.

It is annoying, but would have been acceptable if they were good. The last one wasn't really all that special, it was just like a normal episode.

Me too but it's definitely time for RTD to hang up his boots and pass over the torch. Whereas I'm hugely looking forward to the direction it takes with Moffat, I'm a little hesistant about Matt Smith. Hopefully he'll be brilliant though.

Another thing about Stephen Moffat is that everyone shouldnt expect every single episode to be a Blink-esque mega drama. I'm sure he'll have his flop episodes but in general I have a feeling his writing will make the show go to a whole new level

I hope they don't change the theme choooon too much as well in 2010... what with the colder retro logo I can't see it having the big band and allsorts layered on top as much as it rocks

A year or so ago I saw a video of someone who wondered what the intro would be like if it was done like an American comedy or sitcom... Dr Who opening with a montage of characters and clips would be terrifying

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 11:14

I'm very confuzzled. I don't understand this Dr Who malarkey.

Quite a lot has been changed, it isn't series 5 it is series 1. I hadn't thought of the theme tune but I imagine Murray Gold will be involved in any changes.

  • Stuart C27/10/2009 at 11:25

The Doctor and Daleks frolicking in a fountain in central New York to the Rembrandts?

American TV – well, the best American TV – has made great leaps in the past decade, don't you think? The biggest single advance is that it's no longer compulsory to have a cute kid who learns something about life in every episode.

On the other hand, I watched a brief bit of the new Knight Rider to see if it scored on the so-bad-it's-good front, and it was total cack.

  • RG27/10/2009 at 11:25

Gadget Refridge-a-Gadget: A gloved hand holding an unmarked aerosol can appears out of his hat and sprays a substance that immediately reduces the surrounding area to subzero temperatures. This gadget was only used in Gadget's Gadgets.

  • Stuart C27/10/2009 at 12:03

I think there is room for both. Inspector Gadget is brill!

I once came up with the idea for a show that was kind of like Dr Who meets I'm Alan Partridge.

The central character was Davros, who was now a washed-up and embittered ex-dictator living in Lydd. In the first episode he would try and fail to get elected to the local borough council. In the second, ruined by the expenses incurred during the election campaign, he got a part-time job as a pub inspector for CAMRA.

I actually got as far as writing a couple of scenes for episode two: one in which Davros and the Cyberleader got squiffy and ended up performing Would I Lie To You? by Charles & Eddie on karaoke; another involving some japes with Davros and a Stannah Stairlift. The whole thing was clearly nonsense so I never sent it to anyone, although a couple of years later I was amused to see a broadly similar stairlift-related gag in Pheonix Nights.

  • Alison27/10/2009 at 12:03

Nick how did you get near the plane so quickly? Whenever I fly I spend hours having to sit around. Especially long haul.

I wonder what will be like when he leaves Renault in about 4 years time for the 3rd time. Perhaps by then it won't be so sad, but more... ritualistic for him.

    #sidepodspace update

Launch delayed for about an hour. The likely launch time is now 9:24am Eastern 1:24pm UK.

The weather is being unco-operative. They no sooner put the delay in than the weather went green. High level winds seem to be the main problem.

They are also experiencing intermittant telemetry problems.

yes but he kept his English accent... Lewis is all american now, and i'm not really a fan of that....plus Jenson went all hippy a couple of years ago, hehe that makes me laugh :D

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 12:56

Fair enough - but it is still interesting that had we started the season now, I think it would be a McLaren-Red Bull-Ferrari-Brawn Championship in that order...

Define now. ;) If you were referring to the article, the WCC would end up RBR-McLaren-Brawn-Ferrari.

  • Lukeh27/10/2009 at 12:56

be honest. jenson lost his frome accent as fast as he could.

I want jenson to buy a brand new combine 'arvester.

  • Turkey Machine27/10/2009 at 12:56

Only when he races Brawnmowers ;)

Oh my Gawd, I think my head exploded.

  • Amy27/10/2009 at 12:56

  • me27/10/2009 at 12:56

yes but he kept his English accent... Lewis is all american now

i'm not sure i see the difference?

aha in an interview on radio one the girl asked him if he used to drive a tractor to school, his response was one of disbelief and laughter :D hehe

No, Jenson lost his English accent and acquired a different English accent

  • lou27/10/2009 at 12:58

That's awful. The definition of "Portable" in the app sense is that it can be used ANYWHERE, and is standalone to any installation. Can I come round there and smack the techies and management who thought this was a kosher idea? Please? I'll bring the shiny baseball bat I sought off eBay the other night.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 13:22

Especially if it gets hacked. Can you imagine lining up to the start and seeing "BERNIE IS POO" on the screen?

    WINNER. :D

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:22

NASA have managed to catch a piece of string on top of their rocket. You couldn't make this up. They have some kind of probe on the point of the rocket and they pulled the cover from it at the last minute with a piece of string and now the string is caught on it.

This makes Bernie and Max look professional. Pulling a piece of string is not rocket science.

  • Amy27/10/2009 at 13:23

as long as it doesn't change every 10-15 seconds, they'll be fine.

I hate those moving banners, any sport I watch with them every single time they change my eye is drawn to them. Which I guess is the point of advertising but I don't understand how the players block it out.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:23

they're the softest most ridiculously comfortable pjs ever. I may have to hunt out some more Paul Frank ones without tractors to see if the fabric matches up to my expectations.

ahh I mostly see them in rugby/league/netball. Games where scoring actually happens :D

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:25

The string that is caught on the rocket is parachute cord so their plan to pull it till it breaks is not going to work. They are now considering cutting the cord. I love NASA

    By having it not start?

well it would be remembered?i'm really no help today :)

"windows detected a problem and has shut down"

    :D

Or they could get people to text in and that, just get the typical 'will you marry me Jenson - clair from stockton on tees' etc.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:26

    They're testing string theory?

    :D

    That deserves a www.instantrimshot.com

  • Amy27/10/2009 at 13:26

    Hey Adie.

Made me think, where is my dinner?

  • Maverick27/10/2009 at 13:28

    They got rid of it?

Turns out it wasn't a bit of string, it was a finger print on the screen... ;-)

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:29

Now that they have dislodged the bit of string the new launch time will be 9:44am / 1:44 UK

Just as well they didn't have the 10 minute shuttle launch window.

as long as it doesn't change every 10-15 seconds, they'll be fine.

I hate those moving banners, any sport I watch with them every single time they change my eye is drawn to them. Which I guess is the point of advertising but I don't understand how the players block it out.

They're especially bad in the football...

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:33

Weather has just gone green. Right now we have no no goes. There were worries about high level winds and potential lightning but everything is good now. How long that lasts is anyone's guess

  • Adie27/10/2009 at 13:33

I like working from home days. I get to watch Mythbusters @ lunch.

They're about to set fire to 1,000,000 matchheads. Just to see what it looks like.

    Cracking!

    Yup, just done it.

That made me chuckle. Don't try it at home though kids!

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:36

They just called a no go because a cargo ship is in the area of the sea where bits of rocket could land.

90 minute delay. Can't they just sink it?

They could, but that would open a whole new can of worms. :D

    Oh Boo! Stoopid cargo ship.

Sorry this is a bit late and off topic: Just want to say thank you to you all for the 12hr marathon Sidepodcast Radio. I downloaded them a while ago but hadn't got around to listening to them. I put them on when I was driving home(about 250 miles) from London late (9pm) on Sunday. The podcasts kept me wide awake and allowed me to drive back non-stop sans red bull (which is very rare - I usually stop for a break and Red Bull). I laughed, I learnt things, I marvelled at Mr C's cooking skills!! It was Brilliant.

    Well done to all involved!!

    :) :) :)

yay. now to convince christine to go through it all again.

I'm sure I had a video of the like on my phone. A group of people cut the heads of loads and loads and loads of matches and put them in a bucket then set the fuse alight. In slow motion you actually see a mushroom cloud!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8OkEvjWvJQ Sorry for the dodgy music-

  • Christine27/10/2009 at 13:42

the meccano bridge is my favourite :D

Th countdown will start from T-4 at 13:45 GMT or in technical terms 6 minutes till launch.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:46

NASA are a bit like Mark Webber. They keep finding new ways to fail. He finds tramlines that causes his gearbox to select two gears at once and they manage to have problems with boats and bits of string

    Yes. yes I did *embarressed*

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 13:50

The plan today is to launch the rocket then separate the first stage from the rest after a couple of minutes. Everything above the first stage is a dummy with sensors and weights to simulate the real thing. Th first stage will parachute back down to be re-used and the dummy bits will crash into the sea and sink hopefully without hitting any stray ships.

  • Bill27/10/2009 at 13:50

They have all sorts of weather rules from the sensible like high winds to their latest fad which is something electrification. They have said the phrase about 20 times and I still have no idea what they are saying. Sounds like tribal electrification but I don't suppose it is.

Right, so imagine the same plane vertical, with 1000 times more fuel, 100 times more explosive, and 100 times heavier. Would you like a lightning bolt hitting an exposed fuel cell like NASA specify?

Yeah, but clouds = bad for planes. It causes a lot of turbulence. Static = lightning.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:15

The cloud issues relate to lightning not rain. The shuttle can be grounded for rain because of visibility as one of its abort modes is return to launch site so it has to be able to land at the runway near the launch pad and bcause of its speed and lack of power it needs a lot of visibility.

It's a confidence limitation. These guys can't predict when a boat is going to leave the danger area so they have to be surer than sure that it's safe to launch.

  • Christine27/10/2009 at 14:19

the runway is so short it makes me nervous.

    Proper madness!

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 14:19

Is it cos he is French?

    Yes.

I assume it's because a French journo asked the obvious question

    Yes.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 14:19

But where are they going to have it?

Ah, that is the question, no? Perhaps his good chum Prost can help him out.

  • Christine27/10/2009 at 14:20

  • lou27/10/2009 at 14:22

you really missed out in brazil!

:( strange thing is i can't remember what i was doing on that saturday either. i mean i remember watching quali, but can't remember why i didn't get to see FP3...

  • Lukeh27/10/2009 at 14:23

I've finally got the opportunity to hear Muse's newest album on the limited edition vinyls I had, and my word...

Spectacular does it no justice hearing it like this.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:24

I am sure they could sell out Paul Ricard and probably finance th race from the fines resulting from people cutting corners

  • Christine27/10/2009 at 14:24

True. But there can only be one FIA prez ;)

Yea. Seems a bit off to me to be President for four days and already honing in on your own country.

Well, we did fear this would happen. Although Joe says that Todt promises to look into it. Which is kinda like me promising Mrs. Goat that I would consider not going out so late on Friday - doesn't mean it will happen though ;)

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 14:28

Exactly. But again, I don't mind this one so much - we shouldn't have lost the French GP to start with. Main thing, though, is that he should leave such items to the F1 Commissioner (who he hasn't appointed yet).

The gap is the weather seems to be disappearing and the wind is now above the 20 knot limit. I have a feling that this thing is not going to fly today. They only have an hour and a half left to get it off the ground or reset and do it all again tomorrow

but i would've thought he'd have thought this through by now - a President picks his Cabinet as soon as he gets the nod. Let's see if he announces anything by Abu Dhabi.

No, no, no, you fail to understand the F1 commissioner's role. His job is to do all the unpopular stuff that we'll hate him for. Bringing back the French GP is a good idea and therefore all Todt's.

    ;-)

The Brazil GP seems to have totally wiped my memory of what i did on the saturday.. i honestly can't remember a thing about that weekend other than the f1 action. it's kinda scaring me now.. does anyone remember what i was doing?

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:35

Had they not had issues with that string...

Exactly. All that budget and all that technology and the only reason they haven't launched is because of a bit of string. Apparently they have pulled that string off hundreds of times and never had that problem.

  • Maverick27/10/2009 at 14:35

Oooh. Just mentioned the funny stuff I noticed from that issue, like Ant betting that it'll be McLaren and Ferrari at the front in Melbourne, and no Brawn GP section in the preview. Also mentioned all those Honda buyer rumors - there were TONS of them.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:48

Winds at the launch pad are 22 knots which is 2 above the limit. Th ten minute average wind sped has been red for some time. The 15 minute window is going to be a lot less than 15 minutes.

What you have to remember is if this has to be done again tomorrow thay have to pull the string again.

Thanks for the link, Christine. ;)

I didn't know NASA made wind-up rockets - or is that James May's next TV programme?

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:52

We are due to start from T-4 at 13:00 UK time and launch 4 minutes later

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 14:53

Everything is go except the weather. At some point NASA have to move from Florida. It is costing them a fortune being there

But to where? I thought Florida was picked because of its location?

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:54

I didn't know NASA made wind-up rockets - or is that James May's next TV programme?

They have something called a 5 hole probe right on the pointy end of the rocket and they don't want the rain to get in and corrupt the information they are getting from it so they have a cover on it and with all the resources at their disposal they decided the best way to remove the cover was to send someone out to the pad and pull the string. Couldn't make it up.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 14:55

But to where? I thought Florida was picked because of its location?

Geographically it has lots of advantages but every time they want to launch they need ten attempts. I think they should have gone to New Mexico where the space harbour is or they could have gone to Roswell to wind up the conspiracy theorists.

yes, but probably some sunny desert bit in the middle of arizona or california is more or less at the same latitude, and doesn't have thunderstorms every week.

    According to Wikipedia:

Cape Canaveral was chosen for rocket launches to take advantage of the earth's rotation. The linear velocity of the Earth's surface is greatest towards the equator; the relatively southerly location of the Cape allows rockets to take advantage of this by launching eastward, in the same direction as the earth's rotation. It is also highly desirable to have the downrange area sparsely populated, in case of accidents; an ocean is ideal for this. Although the United States has sites closer to the equator with expanses of ocean to the east of them (e.g. Hawaii, Puerto Rico), the east coast of Florida has substantial logistical advantages over these island locations.

All of that is true but the constant bad weather must outweigh a lot of that

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 15:09

I wonder if there is a Dulux colour chart for weather.

Is it wrong to have eaten 75% of a 975g tin of Roses today?

    Other chocolate is available.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 15:18

If this attempt doesn't fly then they are going to have no more attempts today. Probably. No doubt the weather woman will see a gap with 30 seconds left in the window to ensure we sit through the full 4 hours.

Is it wrong to have eaten 75% of a 975g tin of Roses today?

Chocolate is health food besides they have raspberries or strawberries in there which count for your daily fruit and veg ration. Also nuts which are healthy unless they kill you

They need to employ someone less optimistic at the weather station. It all sounds very "I'm sure it'll be lovely in 20 minutes, the cows are standing up and there was a red sky last night..."

Seems McDonalds is pulling out of Iceland (the Country)

    Quote:

"I've sold more hamburgers in the last few months than ever before, but the cost is prohibitive. It just makes no sense," Ogmundsson told Reuters. "For a kilo of onion, imported from Germany, I'm paying the equivalent of a bottle of good whiskey."

Now, I went to Iceland just before the crash and things are very expensive. But Reykjavik is modern western city and a lot of Icelanders mortgage up to the hilt with big cars etc. But a kilo of onions costing as much as a bottle of whiskey? Now that's insane!

Final update for today. NASA have decided that they are going to try again tomorrow. We have a 4 hour window again between noon and 4pm UK time. Hopefully that will give them plenty time to practise with their bit of string and that won't blow tomorrow's launch as well.

Maybe we need to run a competition to guess how they are going to screw up in a new and inventive low tech way tomorrow.

    is this significant?

Group Lotus is pleased to announce the appointment of Claudio Berro to the new role of Director of Motorsport for Lotus, reporting directly to Dany Bahar, Group Lotus CEO.

Claudio Berro held the position of Operations Racing Director for the Speedcar Middle-East International Race Series. Before that, he spent 14 years at Ferrari, Maserati and Fiat where he held such positions as Formula One Team Manager.

  • me27/10/2009 at 17:48

    also from williams:

To help celebrate the 35th anniversary of the national charity the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), the AT&T Williams team has agreed to feature the charity’s logo on either side of the AT&T Williams driver helmets of Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima that will be worn during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 1 November.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 17:51

    is this significant?

Danny Bahar siad Group Lotus was going to get involved in all sorts of motorsport but had nothing to do with F1. He mentioned a few categories like sportscars and some single-seaters. I think he is trying to make the company more like something Chapman would recognise. He said the Proton parent company was running the Notus F1 team.

    But no one wanted to believe it because it went against accepted belief. And more than a few reminded us of Prost being impressive in 2001 preseason testing, only for it to fall apart at Melbourne. {Comment #194}

As one of the prime reciters of that particular statistic, I'm very pleased that I was proved completely and utterly wrong in Brawn's case :D

  • Alianora La Canta27/10/2009 at 19:03

    I wonder though. It looked like the car was just fundamentally bad. Like the Honda in 2008. Must have been something there that was wrong that they managed to change. Or was it a combination of things? {Comment #201}

Come to think of it, Renault's been a lot like Honds for three years:

2007 - bad car that eventually came good (but only in the hands of one driver)

2008 - moderately bad car, but sufficiently bad to take everyone by surprise

    2009 - even worse car

Of course, Renault staying in F1 means that the team will not take Honda/Brawn's path next year, but its own.

    I’m so sick of hearing about this that I’m tempted to hire a Fighter bomber wing, evacuate the area and carpet bomb it out of spite until there’s nothing left just to end the whole saga!!!!! {Comment #279}

It's Princes Gate (the location of FOM) and whichever corners of the world CVC occupy that you'd need to carpet bomb...

Linux does have executable files, obviously, but they generally don't have a file extension at all (ie, no .exe). You'll see extensions like .sh, .py, .pl, etc., and those are scripts written in a particular language.

If it's a compiled program then it usually doesn't have any extension at all, it's just marked as executable in it's file system permissions (ls -al in a directory and you'll see them)

Ok, that .rpm file they're talking about (openvpn-[details].rpm) is a package that contains all the files you need to run openvpn (configuration files, binary/executable files, etc.). the rpm -ivh blah.rpm command then puts all those files into the right place. (sorta like clicking "install" when installing software off a CD or something)

it sounds like a call to the government to stump up the cash.

Personally I think the BRDC should say to Bernie "this is all we're prepared to pay", and if there isn't a British GP next year, one of two things will happen:

    a) the govt will kick in for 2011

    b) Bernie will break, and then he will lose all his special powers

  • jpancoast27/10/2009 at 20:25

    #sidepodspace

NASA are predicting a 60% chance of good weather for tomorrow's launch. There is no forecast on how likely it is that a piece of string will screw the whole thing up again.

I miss quali, due to a football event.

  • jackie/saltire27/10/2009 at 21:05

I seem to have missed something - is there a blog post somewhere I need to be looking at?

Just testing which is most important to Lou, team or driver

  • jackie/saltire27/10/2009 at 21:06

    First I've heard of that

read something to that effect in reader, I'll see if I can find it again

  • RG27/10/2009 at 21:06

Seems like you are right. According to some Greek site anyway.

First I've heard of a potential link with Manor though

hehehe it's the whole appeal of Jenson and the team and their shear awesomeness... or brawnsomeness... either way they are a perfect team to me :D but i'd not give up my support for Jenson i dont think...

A London street circuit is not even a possibility. The only place in the British mainland where you can legally have a race is Birmingham.

    Can I ask why? {Comment #1064}

It used to have a street race in the olden days and the planning permission was never formally rescinded. Given the state of the roads, I doubt there will be a Birmingham race in the near future, however...

Driver all the time - Button! I've been lucky in being able to go from Mansell to Hill to Button. Hamilton's never really done it for me, I guess my next one will be one of the Christodoulo cousins if they make it - and Bruno.

However, Whilst Brawn remain Brawn they've got a soft spot.

And I now feel like I've exited the time-space continuum, because for some reason I'd got it into my head that the race in question was between the World Wars. Clearly the F3000 Superprix happened slightly later than that, but it sounds right - the problem is clearly with my memory!

I think from the inter-war years only Norhern Ireland ran road races at Dundrod. I can;t think of anywhere else that did. Maybe Stuart or Joe would know different.

Change no. 2 - The blog page: http://sidepodcast.com/blog/

Previously it was missing tags and categories, which are now visible.

There are also brand new links to either:

Leave a comment / Share on Facebook / Share on Twitter / Subscribe to blog/podcast (depending on post)

The two share ones are the most exciting. Facebook shares the blog entry as a link on your profile, whilst the Twitter one will update with a tweet depending on the type of blog post.

For an audio podcast it'll say: Listening to...

    For video: Watching...

    For text: Reading...

Please note: We are aware of issues with the pictures not linking properly on Facebook. And all of the above needs lots of lovely testing by you good folks.

Quite a lot has been changed, it isn't series 5 it is series 1. I hadn't thought of the theme tune but I imagine Murray Gold will be involved in any changes.

Season 1? Whats the thinking behind that?

Season 1? TV people just don't get it.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 23:07

    i thought that was rubens?

    Lou?

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 23:07

    Night to those leaving

  • lou27/10/2009 at 23:07

He changed chassis a couple of races ago and his results were immediately better

nooo.... that was Rubens wasn't it? cause Rubens had the very first chasis... that Jenson originally tested for the first time at silverstone, before he tested the second which became his own.. Rubens got the 3rd chassis a couple of races ago...

  • James27/10/2009 at 23:08

he broke the rear suspension somewhere, but aside from that i don't think he scratched it.

Hungary i'm betting where he lost a wheel or a nut came off. Renault have problems with wheels in Hungary clearly.

  • lou27/10/2009 at 23:08

    Me too - good night!

    night :)

  • lou27/10/2009 at 23:08

    Lou?

i haven't heard anything about Jenson changing chassis, only Rubens.

  • me27/10/2009 at 23:09

    sounds about right.

they removed the wheel man after that incident. did he come back or something?

that was an odd race, it was won by a future world champion.

That sounds about right - IIRC Rubens needed to change his car, or use the spare in Singapore after wrecking his in qualli....

    sup 'G?

I've, got nothin. Hows ... the day, been?

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 23:48

I've, got nothin. Hows ... the day, been?

Today.....i went to a funeral, but surprisingly, the days been pretty good.

When you're a Christian and the person who's died is too, the funeral isn't a sad event, its a happy one, so we spent the whole of the afternoon/evening joking around about life and memories and stuff....

So to top off my exhausting, back breaking 5 day.....whatever you call it....it's been good, but now i have to get back into a routine again, and routines suck.

    ahem

    So, hows half term?

  • RG27/10/2009 at 23:49

Today.....i went to a funeral, but surprisingly, the days been pretty good.

    Sorry to hear.

    So, hows half term?

Ideal. Done nothing. Though should crack on with some English tomorrow.

  • Jon Waldock27/10/2009 at 23:52

Ideal. Done nothing. Though should crack on with some English tomorrow.

I love days like that, but then 1 day turns into 2 and then 3, and then you're at wednesday and have done nothing. I really need to get down to some work, i have a report due in a couple of weeks and the writing it isnt going to be the hardest bit, the cutting it down to 1500 words is going to take its toll.

My friend wrote 1 part of 6 that needs to go in it, and he took 600 words to do it....so by my estimation i should only have to cut out....2100 words! joy!

  • Turkey Machine28/10/2009 at 00:00

I'm doing the "now going to bed" thingy again, only this time I mean it! Nice chatting to you all, if I get bored watching practice I'll join in. Might not make the live debrief cos of the stupid amount of sim-racing I do, but otherwise I'll give it a go. I wanna get a mention from Mr C, he's a legend! :D

    Ciao.
