Lo and behold, we are now entering the last week of the 2009 season, with the build-up to Abu Dhabi starting now. Even though the championships are no longer at stake, there's still some racing to be had. Meanwhile:

  • RG has written an interesting analysis of a potential qualifying championship. Given a set of points based on qualifying result, who would come out on top? It certainly wasn't the result I was expecting but makes sense when you think about it.
  • The organisers of the Abu Dhabi race have said the event is a sell out with all the tickets up and gone a week ahead of time. That's really good for them, particularly as they are a brand new circuit and need some success that the other new circuits are lacking.
  • Ross Brawn has said he is sure they can find a way to keep Button with the team, and I am sure they can too. Rumours of a rift are presumably over-exaggerated, as they have been several times this season. It'll all be alright in the end.

That's all for now. We should have a competition launching later today, as mentioned in yesterday's Debrief. Stay tuned for that and I'll see you in the comments.

Slightly disappointed that the London game is only in highlights form on the BBC this year. Last year's game was really interesting. This one isn't too bad but I think you lose some of the atmosphere. I never usually watch NFL.

Showing highlights only defeats the point of having the game at Wembley. It's worse in Scotland. The highlights is on against 5's live coverage. What is the point to that?

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 00:46

I am off to bed now. If I can't sleep I may get up for the U2 concert at 3:30. Can't believe they are doing it on a Sunday night instead of a Saturday. It's like they want to minimise the audience.

I think it was live on Sky... but if they are bringing it over to grow it here, at least show it to as many people as possible? I'm not sure if the BBC should be doing it, perhaps Five could have shown it live.

Well I have finsihed a Quikmap of my ideal Monza circuit. For safety reasons I destroyed the High Banks (No longer used I think) and replaced them with Indianaopolis style 10 degree banking so the F1 cars can hand the turns. Unless Bridgestone the walls of the sidewalls for some strange reason.

The 1st chicane is a straightaway and the second chicane is a left hand kink. The lap distance should be somewhere around 6.214 miles and if cars can not slipstream from the strat/finish line inner straght around the oval, the length of the outerstart/finish straight to 1st Lesmos something is fundamentally wrong with F1 drivers.

My two questions are: ==> Where do I put it? The Wiki can not find my old E-mail address so I cannot log into it and is ther anything better than Quikmaps out there?

I kina mention to mr. c about making a blog about having F1 host 21 kickin' circuits. How kickin'? Well I am modifying Monza.....in an attempt for it to beat is own fastest ever F1 speeds records and straghtening the race as much as possible to induce slipstreaming.

I got my Google Wave log in about 2 weeks ago now. But they have stopped giving users invites to invite more people for the time being. So for the last two weeks I have had wave but of course can't use it because I can only talk to myself. Fourstar signed up for wave about 1 minute after me and got his login on Saturday. Neither of us have invites to invite more people...

    Mr C... You have mail.

    so i do :)

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:11

Making it clear that doohicky > e-mail

So was everyone taught greater than or less than the same way?

The crocodile always wants to eat the bigger number?

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:13

The crocodile always wants to eat the bigger number?

    the.things.you.learn.

doohickey should be mandatory in all schools. i learnt left from right the other day.

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:14

doohickey should be mandatory in all schools. i learnt left from right the other day.

    How did you learn that?

Hold your hands up in front of you, with your fingers pointing to the sky, then have your thumbs out at a right angle to your hand. Now your left hand is making an L

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:15

    it was in the comments.

    that's the one!

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:18

Hold your hands up in front of you, with your fingers pointing to the sky, then have your thumbs out at a right angle to your hand. Now your left hand is making an L

Works well except for particular types of dyslexics who think both are Ls. As I found when teaching them.

Here's another useful one for you then Mr C.

How do you remember which way tightens and which way loosens a screw?

    Tighty Righty

    Lucy Lefty

Of course you will need to combine it with the left from right thing as a power move ;)

  • Amy26/10/2009 at 08:19

    Tighty Righty

    Lucy Lefty

I use that all. the. time.

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:20

How do you remember which way tightens and which way loosens a screw?

    right - tight

    left - loose

  • Amy26/10/2009 at 08:21

but similar... and it fails on plumbing.

I rule at plumbing. The day I took the pipes under sink apart to clear a blockage and put it back together again without it leaking was one of the best in my life. I rung up my dad to tell him about my smartness and he didn't even care :(

I line up the octagonal holey thing in it with the octagonal screwy thing on the wall and push it in and up at the same time, then in and down to turn it off. The rest of the time it lives on the soap dish :D

I don't either. However if at the end of the season next year when we have had 18 lights to flag victories (because the fastest man is on pole, there is no fuel strategy, and they haven't fixed overtaking). Maybe they will finally decide to fix overtaking.

Or they will knee-jerk back to having refuelling again at even greater expense.

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:26

Ah okay. I wasn't doubting you, I just didn't know.

and, i think f1 wheel nuts too.

but would we still care enough by then, or will we literally watch anything?

  • Kathi26/10/2009 at 08:27

Ted said the teams had to come up with an immobiliser that would keep the car in the box if the fuel hose were still attached, even if the driver tried to pull away. . Why didn't that work for Heikki/McLaren?

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:27

Do we think there is any particular reason for these aberrations or is it simply to be annoying?

  • Amy26/10/2009 at 08:28

I think I'm the latter sadly. I keep watching 'just in case' something happens :(

immobiliser is no match for SuperFinn!

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:28

i think in f1 terms it stops the thread working loose with the rotation of the f1. and in plumbing terms... i forget.

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:31

I thought he had said Ferrari had developed it. And the FIA wanted the other teams to copy it, or something.

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:34

    you raise a good point!

  • Kathi26/10/2009 at 08:34

However if at the end of the season next year when we have had 18 lights to flag victories

I have no idea how it will influence the racing. I just don't know enough about tyre wear and that stuff but the problem for me is the pitstops. Because at the moment the deciding factor for letting the car go is the fuel hose, which is easy (well mostly) to keep up with. But next season the lolipop man has to make sure all 4 tyres are attached and everyone is out of harms way which sound more chaotic and dangerous.

  • Kathi26/10/2009 at 08:36

(that) immobiliser is a match for (the other) SuperFinn!

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 08:39

But next season the lolipop man has to make sure all 4 tyres are attached and everyone is out of harms way which sound more chaotic and dangerous.

It's actually easier I think because the wheel nut man holds his gun up in the air or his arm depending on the team. Whereas with the fuel hose the person detaching can't indicate he's happy or not because the hose is too heavy.

  • Kathi26/10/2009 at 08:43

But at the moment the procedure is something like: all tyres are finished and then the lolipop man only has to focus on one location to see if the hose is detached (well and check for traffic) but next year he has to focus on 4 different locations that will all finish at roughly the same time.

  • me26/10/2009 at 08:45

can i recommend a solution based on traffic lights suspended over each gantry...

Yes the four locations is a problem. But I think most confusions come from the lollipop man interpreting the wrong movement from the fuel hose man.

My dad definitely is. Perhaps because my mum cuts his hair and he makes cheeky comments the whole way through the procedure.

this is where it pays to be a girl with hair so long that no one really notices if you only cut it once every 2 years. I wore my hair out today actually and 10 separate people felt they should tell me how long it is, because perhaps I wasn't already aware.

  • Christine26/10/2009 at 09:10

I saw him at the Taupo round. He was in a different race to the rest of them - on a circuit he'd never been to before and with no chance to train prior to racing there!

I got a smile out of Heikki! I think Kimi was just frowny because he was in red and he knows he belongs in black and silver, and he couldn't smile at me because he was not happy to be cheating on me with that team.

CRC is normally a disk error. Hmmmm. Getting a kernel to boot off USB is tricky. Did you build it or download an image?

Downloaded off an image. Should I format the drive in a special way? I am running XP and I would like to try out Mint...

Sadly, I was never able to do this successfully with Linux, although I know it can be done. Ask Google? It may depend on the USB drive - that Linux loads up the correct driver while booting.

  • paul26/10/2009 at 10:01

There are USB drive preparation utilities that make them bootable from some operating systems. Do some more reading, and best of luck.

  • paul26/10/2009 at 10:02

Actually, it's sometimes easier just to make a bootable DVD or CD from and ISO if that is an option. Not as cool as having it on USB tho

a sort of backwards way would be to burn the iso on cd run it and use linux to install the iso on usb using usb-creator or something similar named

I know there were a lot of discussions yesterday about Jenson's salary and so on. I had a thought...

I wonder if they are happy to put him back on to his old salary but that something went wrong with the bonus arangement part of the contract.

I mean Jenson took a pay cut to get the team running, but what if there was a winning the world championship bonus that Brawn thought had been invalidated for this year?

  • Alison26/10/2009 at 10:56

This month's F1 Racing just popped through the letterbox. I bet they had their fingers crossed that the race for the championship would go down to the last round at Abu Dhabi and give them a few weeks to put together a worthwhile article.

Instead, enjoy a dozen pages of Jenson Button. The joys of deadlines eh?

Otherwise, looks like a fairly interesting issue. Especially the Adrian Sutil piece.

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 12:02

Instead, enjoy a dozen pages of Jenson Button. The joys of deadlines eh?

so those dozen pages aren't much good, then?

Sutil's piece is the one with the piano, right?

Sutil's piece is the one with the piano, right?

    It is indeed.

FWIW, Donington's deadline to repair their breach of contract has just passed. They're officially in trouble - the legal kind.

    * Woken up my roadworks outside my house... that finished when I woke up. Grr.

    * Had a man staring through my window as he measured the windows for new fitting. Which apparently was Bassano or Kathi ;)

    * Local main road closed off so I had to go on a trek for a bus

    * Bus driver was new and got lost on the route that was obviously changed

    * I found £5 in my shoe (how?! Why was it there!!)

    * Wondered why the ATM wasn';t taking my card... then I realised I was putting in my Iceland card...........

But now I am home and safe and the window man has gone and there is no roadworks so I assume the rest of the day will fingers crossed make sense ;)

DC has done a Q&A and said some good and bad things, but he is confident he wont mistake a hotel for a red flag http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/79774

"Q. There is some concern about the lights on the hotel being on during the race and distracting the drivers. Is that really an issue?"

we literally made that up last night didn't we? was that ever a real fear of drivers?

  • Bert26/10/2009 at 14:33

"Q. There is some concern about the lights on the hotel being on during the race and distracting the drivers. Is that really an issue?"

Maybe the drivers will try to peek in to the rooms to see if anything interesting is going on.

I adore Brundle's description of the Brazilian GP:

There were cars out of position on the grid, accidents galore, handbag fights on the side of the track, a safety car, wildly varying strategies, Finns setting fire to each other in the pit lane and brilliant overtaking moves.

He makes it all sound perfectly normal for a Brazilian race!

  • Alison26/10/2009 at 14:59

Does it seem strange to anyone else that Brawn are winners of both Championships yet cannot afford to pay Jenson a Champion's salary? I though they were being very selective with their sponsorship in order to raise the value. It now seems they actually did not have much in the way of sponsors. Will Mercedes bail them out with a buy out? If so could the cars next year simply be called Mercedes F1.

  • James26/10/2009 at 15:03

i think they don;t see the point in paying a driver lots of money when they need lots of money for development. remember they aren't funded by Honda anymore, they've got to be careful with their money.

i think they don;t see the point in paying a driver lots of money when they need lots of money for development. remember they aren't funded by Honda anymore, they've got to be careful with their money.

Why I ask is apparently they have spent most of the 120 million that Honda gave them to play with. I don't blame Jenson wanting more when Kimi wants some 25 million euros (i think that is the currency). I doubt that Nico will come cheap. How do you think will drive for the same amount they paid Jenson this year? Until now I thought there was no chance of Jenson leaving, but I have my doubts now.

  • Lukeh26/10/2009 at 15:16

Looks like the weather for tomorrow's launch is going to be a problem. It is currently 60% no go. There is another launch window on Wednesday where the weather is 40% no go. Quite why NASA have switched to reporting no go percentages rather than go percentages I have no idea. I guess they just like being confusing.

To make up for the possibility of their not being a launch I give you this interesting if very weird picture from Mars.

No I've said it before, I'll say it again. The liveries are boring. BMW, Brawn, Toyota, Force India, Williams (to an extent, shoulda kept the winter livery), Renault are so unimaginative its rubbish. I love Honda's previous attempts, at the least they were original.

It is and he sold them on to google. I imagine their multimedia production may partner with them to some extent but beyond that I dont really see the point in them advertising. Its like marketing tap water.

  • Alex Andronov26/10/2009 at 17:00

It is the fault of the sponsors.

There is no sponsor who could make Ferrari not red.

But the smaller teams need the money more.

Chad Hurley... It is just, just possible that they may have a good livery because of him. He is a usability expert. And when he worked at paypal he designed the logo. So he isn't just a techy geek. The polish is important to him.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 17:03

After loooong considerations I've decided I don't like the no refuelling rule. Just thought I let you know :)

In terms of pure sport, I like the thought of managing the car through the race rather than three flat-out stints at the limit of the car. It should mean a driver has a greater say in the outcome. Unfortunately it might not be very thrilling.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 18:16

That's awesome :) I'm sure you will be fine! I was a wreck constantly before my test!

I was fine but I just couldn't drive. My instructor wanted to cancel my test half an hour before the event because I was driving so badly. In the end I sailed through the test.

    :D

  • Pat W26/10/2009 at 18:21

But at the moment the procedure is something like: all tyres are finished and then the lolipop man only has to focus on one location to see if the hose is detached (well and check for traffic) but next year he has to focus on 4 different locations that will all finish at roughly the same time.

I thought they currently focus on 5 locations - the 4 tyres plus the refueller. This should make it easier in terms of reducing places to look, but in reality much harder because a stop will only last 3.5 seconds.. they won't have the 3.5 second change, then another 4.5 to look at the arms and wait for the fuel... it'll get hectic.

  • Pat W26/10/2009 at 18:22

Whose sensible idea was it to do roadworks this time of the morning!! they're drilling and everything :(

    Cats

It sounds like the roads must be might dangerous that far north! First alison has crashed her car and now they have let steven take his test at sea!

Makes me wonder what USF1 is gonna be like...

Boring White and Red "YouTube" or some ghastly patriot stars and stripes.

They've ruled out the flag as the main theme, although I expect it to feature in a smaller capacity.

    hey

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 18:41

I could see a design with an eagle and its beak and talons looking as good as the Red Bull with its Horns and snorting.

  • Lukeh26/10/2009 at 18:42

right... I really need to start reading the topic before I arrive!

Oh Im just working on a little something. problem is I need a large high quality picture of Jean Todt in order to get it working...

Yes that is a terrifying request

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 18:44

Yes that is a terrifying request

Too true - why not invest your considerable talents in making something attractive like the livery for the new USF1 with a sort of eagle design.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 18:46

it's not motorsport related, but i've put up a selection of photographs that i took while away in Cambridge on my flickr if anyone is interested and fancies having a look.

They aren't brilliant quality though due to an incorrect setting on my camera that i only noticed when i returned. typical ;)

Poor Alphonso. Will he live or is it fatal?

They just signed a new deal to keep it in Wales

  • Pat W26/10/2009 at 20:19

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 20:21

True.. but if the likes of Petter Solberg are hunting around for work, that can't be good.

It is in a ridiculous mess. The cars are ridiculously expensive. They need new tech regs. Just before he died Colin McRae was testing a car of his own design that could give good performance at a fraction of the cost.

McRae said they were too slow.

To me they just need to simplify the technology and make the cars sensibly affordable. The WRC is in a mess just like every other major championship which Max was supposed to manage

    @Gavin

I think you need to do an Md5sums as a first possible issue is a corrupted download.

CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Errors (CRC Check Failed Error) and means part of an archive probably did not fully unzip and your installation is trying to access files within this damaged archive.

Check this website to to get a program to check the MD5 sums it should be the same as from your download site (just an ASCII string). Sorry I do not have a Windows PC to test.

    Rich,

You've lost me - I have checked the file using something called Hashtag and it's given me an MD5 sum. What now?

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 21:07

The ASCII string should be the same as the MD5 file that accompanies most Linux (or other big file install). The MD5 is just a text file you can open and compare with. I have not had this problem EVER but I do check my files before attempting to install.

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 21:18

Well I have never had this problem, it is explained in the Linux Mint documentation -

In the MD5 file is 64e2a290fb51f8e7a9d058355fe93d0e if this differs to what your download file is then there is a problem,

Gere is link to the Mint Documentation which is very easy reading.

I must be a freak as I find Windows hell of complex. I still do not know how to use an ISO file in windows to make a bootable CD.

It's the same - so it's something to do with preparing the USB drive - but how do I do that? I'm trying UNetbootin now and seeing if that works...

Unetbootin is great it will make a bootable USB - but you will not be able to save stuff to it (viz it is not a persistent disk drive). Initially you just want to check compatibility.

Linux live CD is easy. But then, where do you write your data? Some of them will mount your hard drive for you.

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 21:30

That's my argument about Windows you have to find the program download it and check - use a decent Linux or OS X it is there for you. About the worst is simply type sudo apt get and whatever package in the terminal and it finds and installs. Linux is just so easy.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 21:30

This time it is different - because they just ripped off OSX!

To me it just said hey moron, you moved from a rubbish OS to another one to another one. What a fool you are.

My reaction to that add is, you may be right but why would i want to have anything to with you, i am not even a customer yet and you are treating me like that?

I get what they are saying, but there are thousands of better ways of doing it than that...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 21:30

    Which bit?

Booting off a USB drive - it boots, loads a choice screen for mint, I choose an option (tried a few) and they start loading ( I see text and dots), it says ready, then it says 'CRC error - system halted'...

Perhaps, but to me its easier to type something into google and 4 or clicks later the programme is running, no need to type inot a terminal at all?

i agree. but as was pointed out to me on twitter, android is linux.

You can put any number of skins over the Linux kernel. I was just making a comment on the whole "sudo apt get is easy" thing. You could make Linux like OSX, is you could be bothered.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 21:34

Look, it depends what you are after. If you just want to try linux, grab the Ubuntu Live CD (or DVD) image, burn that and try it out. If you want that other specific distro, then you have other things to sort out.

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 21:36

    I don't have one the right size - it's either this 4GB or a 500MB one...

500 MB is to small - 4GB is what I use to make a persistent drive - with Mint Gloria you can use a 3GB Casper

The organisers of the Abu Dhabi race have said the event is a sell out with all the tickets up and gone a week ahead of time. That’s really good for them, particularly as they are a brand new circuit and need some success that the other new circuits are lacking.

It's rather exaggerated. It's the first Abu Dhabi GP so tickets should sell well, and selling out Friday and Saturday reflects that, but they've put in so few seats that in reality it will still be one of the lowest attended race days of the year.

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:00

poxy bloody thing. i can't never find anything at all. it's designed for people with some kind of implicit knowledge of television schedules. what if you don't KNOW when something is on, or if you don't even KNOW what you'd like to watch?

where's the "this is popular, by this genre" page. or the "things have have been updated since you went away"?

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:01

About 265,843 years of music in total.

poxy bloody thing. i can't never find anything at all. it's designed for people with some kind of implicit knowledge of television schedules. what if you don't KNOW when something is on, or if you don't even KNOW what you'd like to watch?

I'll agree with you there -if you know what you're looking for it is great.

But as a browse round-type-of-app it can leave you feeling frustrated.

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:02

where's the "this is popular, by this genre" page. or the "things have have been updated since you went away"?

    You can't find Heartbeat?

  • Rich26/10/2009 at 22:02

Mist is taking for-ever to download. I shall be here all day.

I have to turn it - as tomorrow it is a 5am start to get our department's display kiosk set-up at a research open day. Be around tomorrow evening setting the lab for practical exam.

Not sure which Linux you use by Mint has been the easiest of the live CDS I have dealt with.

  • Christine26/10/2009 at 22:02

where's the "this is popular, by this genre" page. or the "things have have been updated since you went away"?

    Have you seen this page?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/

Only because once you select a category it has popular, highlights, and more.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:02

poxy bloody thing. i can't never find anything at all. it's designed for people with some kind of implicit knowledge of television schedules. what if you don't KNOW when something is on, or if you don't even KNOW what you'd like to watch?

I guess yes, i normaly just flick though the EPG and if there is something i miss i look for that on iplayer.

if you dont have an epg i guess it is tricky...

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:03

    You can't find Heartbeat?

nope, and do you know why? because it assumes you know what damn channel the program is meant to be on before you start.

i don't care if it's bbc 1, bbc 2, or bbc 3. arbitrary channel naming does not mean anything to me.

  • RG26/10/2009 at 22:04

nope, and do you know why?

Because it isn't on the bbc?

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:04

i don't care if it's bbc 1, bbc 2, or bbc 3. arbitrary channel naming does not mean anything to me.

You dont have to browse it like that!

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:04

Because it isn't on the bbc?

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:04

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/

ah-ha. no. although i should add, i mostly use the itouch version and so is a magnitude of order worse than the homepage. i shall browse now though.

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:04

so the question is, now that I can get Mint running off the CD:

    1) What does it mean when it says "Install within WIndows"?

    2) Can I install Mint onto my USB disk while running it from the CD?

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:04

nope, and do you know why?

Because it isn't on the bbc?

    oh...

    oops.

Mrs C really should Qik his frustration :P

(obviously without showing the mystical face ;) )

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:06

You and I both know that. He is odd.

:D hehe well he is slowly coming round to being a Jenson fan :P so who knows... maybe we can make him like iplayer...

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:07

You dont have to browse it like that!

you do on the touch, but fair enough we aren't comparing like-for-like.

i should say, i hate the poxy mobile iplayer.

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:07

so the question is, now that I can get Mint running off the CD:

It seems fairly stright forward to me. Once you have the USBMint.exe expanded to a directory, move the ISO into that directory, then run fixmint.bat. (This is all in Windows XP) This will burn the ISO to the USB drive. I'm not up to that yet, as I am still downloading the ISO

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:07

poxy bloody thing. i can't never find anything at all. it's designed for people with some kind of implicit knowledge of television schedules. what if you don't KNOW when something is on, or if you don't even KNOW what you'd like to watch?

    there are search facilities ;)

    Did all that!

    1) What does it mean when it says "Install within WIndows"?

    2) Can I install Mint onto my USB disk while running it from the CD?

You should be able to test it as a live OS without any install.

I think it means there is some issue with your USB stick.

  • Maverick26/10/2009 at 22:09

how many seats do they have/have they sold?

Sorry, posted and then went off to read the Northern Waffler :-)

    50,000 seats.

That's enough to classify Shanghai as deserted

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:09

    Did all that!

I thought you probably did, that's why I am trying it, to see what happens. But it might be tomorrow before my download finishes.

    Could be the USB stick.....?

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:09

    there are search facilities ;)

but i don't know what to search for.

the page christine linked to is helpful. what i want is... show me all the best comedy shows and let me pick the best ones.

kinda like itunes does. i like itunes.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:09

ah-ha. no. although i should add, i mostly use the itouch version and so is a magnitude of order worse than the homepage. i shall browse now though.

why do you watch it on your ipod?

  • James26/10/2009 at 22:10

That's enough to classify Shanghai as deserted

but they at least there won't be empty seats ;)

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:10

    50,000 seats.

    oh!

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:10

I think it means there is some issue with your USB stick.

    Could be the USB stick.....?

I'll try another one tomorrow and see if it is that ... could it also be because I am using a USB plug on the front of the PC?

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:11

See cause what I want to do is keep this PC as a windows PC, but be able to run Linux on it when I want so that I can access the files on the computer using either OS. Is that possible?

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:11

why do you watch it on your ipod?

    a) because the flash video on mac can be quite jumpy. and regularly falls below 25 frames a second. the ipod never seems to drop a frame and the video isn't encoded using flash.

    b) because it's a comfortable way to watch tv.

  • Maverick26/10/2009 at 22:11

but they at least there won't be empty seats ;)

It'll look better, true, but if they only just sold out this week, you wonder how they will do next year once the novelty factor has gone.

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:11

I'll try another one tomorrow and see if it is that ... could it also be because I am using a USB plug on the front of the PC?

Unlikely, but then, you never know.

  • RG26/10/2009 at 22:12

Sorry, posted and then went off to read the Northern Waffler :-)

    I like this guy :)

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:12

but i don't know what to search for.

hehe well Merlin is a good start :P (i'm really not obsessed with that programme at all!)

well.. most new and most interesting things appear on the front page, but i can see how the simplicity of itunes appeals. the only problem is itunes (except podcasts) costs money... iplayer only costs bandwidth :D

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:12

    b) because it's a comfortable way to watch tv.

Holding an iPod Touch is comfortable? I get sore hands and I get all fidgety. Plus if I am on the train, the glare from the window or the lights is a killer!

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:13

why do you watch it on your ipod?

If there's a WiFi connection at work it's an easy way to kill a lunch hour...

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:13

See cause what I want to do is keep this PC as a windows PC, but be able to run Linux on it when I want so that I can access the files on the computer using either OS. Is that possible?

Yes, that's possible. You could even try making a dual-boot system, if you really want some grief :-)

  • Maverick26/10/2009 at 22:13

    I like this guy :)

You would have liked me more if I put that as a link I suppose? :-)

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:13

Holding an iPod Touch is comfortable? I get sore hands and I get all fidgety. Plus if I am on the train, the glare from the window or the lights is a killer!

good for me. i could watch it for hours (plugged-in).

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:13

why do you watch it on your ipod?

    a) because the flash video on mac can be quite jumpy. and regularly falls below 25 frames a second. the ipod never seems to drop a frame and the video isn't encoded using flash.

    b) because it's a comfortable way to watch tv.

fair enough :) on the web (am not sure about with the ipod) once you've watched a programme it does have a selection of programmes that are similar and that it recommends which is nice :)

  • James26/10/2009 at 22:13

the page christine linked to is helpful. what i want is... show me all the best comedy shows and let me pick the best ones.

it does that no? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/comedy on the right hand side?

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 22:14

nope, and do you know why? because it assumes you know what damn channel the program is meant to be on before you start.

They have an A to Z

Yes, that's possible. You could even try making a dual-boot system, if you really want some grief :-)

    So it's difficult then?

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:15

Holding an iPod Touch is comfortable? I get sore hands and I get all fidgety. Plus if I am on the train, the glare from the window or the lights is a killer!

If you spend the amount of time on trains I have you don't complain!!!

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:16

They have an A to Z

again, not on the mobile version. clearly i'm missing out.

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:18

    So it's difficult then?

Its, um, tricky. You have to do things in the right order. You normally end up installing your OS two or three times to get it right.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:18

That's enough to classify Shanghai as deserted

There are one or 2 more people there though!

I think 50,000 is a good number, it should hopefully be able to maintain that figure...

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:18

Just a thought Gavin - did you burn the CD that worked from the same ISO that you made the USB from?

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:20

Just a thought Gavin - did you burn the CD that worked from the same ISO that you made the USB from?

cd is the best way. Just burn it then when you start up your computer it will let you run linux from the cd. you should easily be able to access your files...

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:21

As long as it's full the atmosphere will be good - nothing is worse than empty seats!

paul ricard httt solved that one.

? That's a rather odd way of seeing my point? I think 50,000 is a win, myself...

  • Paul26/10/2009 at 22:22

Boo, ok, well it's not a bad image then.

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:23

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:24

? That's a rather odd way of seeing my point? I think 50,000 is a win, myself...

Its probably more than valencia and they have a succesfull driver.

Its about half of silverstones capacity, but its not to bad to sell that out considering there are no cheap seats/ General admission areas

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:24

They need seats to begin with!

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:24

? That's a rather odd way of seeing my point? I think 50,000 is a win, myself...

It is, but then so is the 90,000 we'd get at Imola / Magny Cours / Montreal.

But It's a subject I feel strongly about and it's too late to get on my soapbox tonight.

I'll reserve judgement until after the race.

  • me26/10/2009 at 22:24

Sorry I haven't had time to make that comment - but I was late home from the train today and running behind schedule. WIll post it tomorrow :)

  • Gavin Brown (LinuxGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:25

    Indeed I did ;)

Boo, ok, well it's not a bad image then.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:26

It is, but then so is the 90,000 we'd get at Imola / Magny Cours / Montreal.

Magny cours and montreal i would agree with, but I dont think F1 should be going to the same countries twice unless we up the number of races.

You could of course say that monaco is effectivly france is race, but i think that could be an exception

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 22:28

You could of course say that monaco is effectivly france is race, but i think that could be an exception

    You need a new keyboard!

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:30

And the 2 races in Spain we watch because of Alonso's success - in a country historically that hasn't had good attendances...

Plus the 2 races in Germany when 'Herr Chin' was winning everything in sight, now with 2 WDC drivers on the grid Britain could lose their race whilst another 'money' event rocks up.

    Grr.

I wasn't going to get all blah blah tonight - If Mr C or Christine don't mind me sharing a link to my blog you can read my views on it all at your leasure...

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:30

But we don't hae another race i France

I know, i meant Imola was a seccond italian GP in all but name.

Monaco is a slightly different catogory as it at least takes place in a seperate state, albeit one which everyone access's though france

The one exception to this rule i could see is the US which is perhaps big enough to justify 2 races

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:31

I don't care if they are targeting Arab Bricklayers called Haziz - as long as people turn up and it's a sellout then it is a win and it's already better than China/Malaysia/Turkey/Korea/Upper Siberia/The Moon (whereever else Bernard chooses next ;) )

I just found out ITV1 have an hour of the Goodwood Revival just about to start.

:( This is the same ITV1 that didn't show Bond here in Poole last week.

Looks like Goodwood's not on either. Bum.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:35

Plus the 2 races in Germany when 'Herr Chin' was winning everything in sight, now with 2 WDC drivers on the grid Britain could lose their race whilst another 'money' event rocks up.

I see what you mean about money events. It is especialy disapointing when you loose your own race. However if their governements want to support the sport and the european governements dont I would say that is more of a failing of the motorsport federations and fans.

It is a world championship not a "countries we have always gone to so we will never go anywhere else championship".

Why do places like monaco have races in the first place? Because they had the money to hold them, its not a new concept, but i there does need to be a balance.

There is no point going to valencia and barcelona if neither races are special tracks which add something to the sport as they both serve the same market. Alternate them if they must.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:36

I just found out ITV1 have an hour of the Goodwood Revival just about to start.

  • Adie26/10/2009 at 22:40

Exactly Nick - if there is no British GP next year I can't begin to explain how ****** I will be.

I find it harder and harder to watch races held in soul-less Tilkedromes that line Bernie's pockets with Government cash, and have hardly any fans in attendance whilst events in the traditional heartland of the sport continually lose out because they cannot afford to host these events.

    It really gets to me!

I mean, the USGP at Indy wasn't historic in terms of the time it was held there, but at least people turned up to watch - especially those that came back after the 2005 gubbins.

  • Maverick26/10/2009 at 22:40

The Spainish GP always seems to be packed to the rafters these days (maybe not this year but their is a recession ;)) was Valencia planned before or after Alonso's sucess?

Barcelona was struggling to sell tickets last year, everyone seemed to prefer to go to Valencia. I think they were shared out more between them this year.

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 22:53

Er - we did yesterday? Perhaps you were sleeping - it was pre-show...

perhaps I was asleep, indeed. What did the Kimi fans say?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:53

A weekly magazine in Denmark ran a promotion with a free Bond DVD every week. I have all the movies on DVD now :D

I am sure Mr C would be very impressed with your collection of pretty coasters :P

Well that's his prerogative - I for one like my DVD's and my 5.1 Surround system :D

  • James26/10/2009 at 22:53

I heart facebook, I can play F1 minute from there! (if I could do this before I never realised ;))

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 22:53

Seems to me that Kimi will be at McLaren but they are both playing hardball in negotiations

How long do you think they will wait?

If heikki is anounced somewhere soon and they dont have an agreement they may just grab nick for a season...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:54

Er - we did yesterday? Perhaps you were sleeping - it was pre-show...

perhaps I was asleep, indeed. What did the Kimi fans say?

Oh, the usual about how he is so wonderful and just needs the right car...

But seriously, I know he still wants to be in F1 ... but if he gets a huge payout from Ferrari anyway, why is he after so much money?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 22:55

But seriously, I know he still wants to be in F1 ... but if he gets a huge payout from Ferrari anyway, why is he after so much money?

I suspect as Joe seems to be implying that it may be connected to his motivation.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 22:57

How long do you think they will wait?

I can;t imagine it will take too long but it will be interesting if a few of the other drivers start signing for other teams.

If heikki is anounced somewhere soon and they dont have an agreement they may just grab nick for a season...

Never going to happen. McLaren set up a junior team to run Heidfeld in F3000 and didn't sign him after that. When he was Kimi's team mate they chose Raikkonen ahead of him. When Mercedes would have loved to have had him i the team they didn't sign him. There is no chance McLaren will sign Heidfeld.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 22:58

But seriously, I know he still wants to be in F1 ... but if he gets a huge payout from Ferrari anyway, why is he after so much money?

Because he is not looking for a one year contract and he wants McLaren to invest enough in him so that they listen to him and don;t just ignore him and do what Lewis wants

  • lou26/10/2009 at 22:58

I heart facebook, I can play F1 minute from there! (if I could do this before I never realised ;))

i'm falling out with facebook more and more each day... i'm now totally angry with facebook chat as it interrupts typing in other tabs which is really annoying! plus if you are appearing offline people with the ipod app can still talk to you...

so if kimi and macca fall out, who gets the seat?

Hehe, that reminds me of ages ago... you can replace the lyrics to the chorus of this song with

Abu Dhabi Dubai Abu Dhabi Dubai....

These guys don't want th money because they need it. It is a guide to their importance to the team.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 23:01

I would expect they will find another driver with a year or two's experience and hope he is better than Heikki

Two things that bug me with Facebook:

    1) Apps. I don't want to be your Farm buddy, or in your Mafia family, or in your Yoville posse. I definitely don't want to play your silly games than run dog slow on my computer and I really truly won't accept your gifts because I know it's a front for an app that will just spam the poo out of my Facebook.

    2) Why the heck do they keep making fundamental changes to the layout? And why is it slower to load each time? I don't want to re-learn the site every 6 months just because you felt like changing it? No wonder we all choose 'lite'!

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 23:04

I know what you mean. I can;t use Facebook except for Facebook Lite; the main normal website just drives me mad.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 23:04

    1) Apps. I don't want to be your Farm buddy, or in your Mafia family, or in your Yoville posse.

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:05

These guys don't want th money because they need it. It is a guide to their importance to the team.

but if senna can offer to drive for williams for free - and we know how quick he is - why can't kimi do it? Bottom line shouldn't be the

money, it should be the car you get.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/10/2009 at 23:06

Yeah, then I realised how pointless it was. Have you played Farmville? It's just random clicking! There's no skill, no goals and no point! I played for aaages and nothing happened :(

  • James26/10/2009 at 23:06

I know what you mean. I can;t use Facebook except for Facebook Lite; the main normal website just drives me mad.

Exactly. Kimi should have just walked up to McLaren and said "Guys... I'm free, I'm awesome, and if you build me a good car I'll kick that pretty boy's a***!"

  • James26/10/2009 at 23:07

Hehe, my biggest annoyance with the latest change is the default is the new feeds which is hours behind. when they first did it it was a whole day behind. I have to switch to the live feed :(

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:07

I would expect they will find another driver with a year or two's experience and hope he is better than Heikki

not many people fall in that category and are available. Sutil and Glock are the only other options if that's the case.

Senna had no intention of driving for Williams for free. He was just trying to de-stabilise Prost. He was paid plenty for every drive he ever had. It's 15 years since he died and he left $164 million in his will

For a social website, it makes me very anti-social!

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 23:10

Good ol' BMW efficency. Telling us beforehand about an announcement that they are going to fold.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:23

*shudders at the memory of 08 off season* i still have the text christine sent me on my phone, everytime i notice it it makes me smile how they got through it :D

was he? i didn't see.. any pictures of him. I didn't see any FP coverage though, and was very angry through Quali, and worried through the race so it's possible i missed him...

  • RG26/10/2009 at 23:25

yes you are right it could be worse,

    USF1, Campos, Manor, Toyota...

...Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Force India, Williams, please, just one of you, just one, can you pwetty please fold and go kaput for me.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:25

Nico thinks he can't beat Lewis in the same team, that's why he's Brawn-bound.

but everyone knows he can't beat Lewis in the same team.. why put him somewhere else anyway?

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:26

Sauber owned 20% of the team

Not a majority at all. If Merc does buy in, they'll have a 75% stake, Ross will only have 25%. Merc owns the shop.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:26

Oooh, I know a good partnership. Glock and Trulli. The dream team at Brawn

i believe you're mixing up your Brawns and your toyotas ;) don't worry it's an easy mistake to make given their white liveries ;)

coz Merc want a German to win in a Merc and they can't get Vettel?

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:27

i believe you're mixing up your Brawns and your toyotas ;) don't worry it's an easy mistake to make given their white liveries ;)

Look what you made me do RG! you made me be mean about the Brawn livery... which i kinda like...

  • Pat W26/10/2009 at 23:27

when it comes up in the feed, move the mouse over it and "hide" should appear click on it and you can choose from hiding the app or the person :)

    aha, thanks

was he? i didn't see.. any pictures of him. I didn't see any FP coverage though, and was very angry through Quali, and worried through the race so it's possible i missed him...

i have my comment from live commenting, does that count?

well Merc are silly :P i thought he was a fake fin not a german?

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:29

    yet... ;)

and unless Ferrari screw up, they won't get him at all.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:29

heheh yes, i'm not on a search for Wurx related photos.. was he looking all scruffy like the last time he appeared?

  • me26/10/2009 at 23:30

    yup.

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:31

well Merc are silly :P i thought he was a fake fin not a german?

he's still a son of a champion and is a sponsor's dream. Why say no, right?

  • James26/10/2009 at 23:31

and unless Ferrari screw up, they won't get him at all.

    Alonso comes to mind.

although they got in him the end.

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:32

    Alonso comes to mind.

Raikkonen too, come to think of it.

  • Steven Roy26/10/2009 at 23:32

well Merc are silly :P i thought he was a fake fin not a german?

    and Vettel is half English

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:32

    yup.

awwww! i did wonder if he was still employed by Brawn because of the team he tried to enter for 2010? then again he hasn't done anything for Brawn this season yet has he?

  • James26/10/2009 at 23:32

Raikkonen too, come to think of it.

    :)

    so there is previous.

looked like he was just being sociable, i think.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:33

aw yay for Wurz being around :)

  • Journeyer26/10/2009 at 23:34

    so there is previous.

but wasn't that because Todt wanted to do it his way? Stefano might be more flexible.

  • Nick26/10/2009 at 23:36

he's still a son of a champion and is a sponsor's dream. Why say no, right?

Did you just suggest PK for Mclaren? now that would be interesting!

  • James26/10/2009 at 23:36

but wasn't that because Todt wanted to do it his way? Stefano might be more flexible.

who knows, i've heard Todt wanted Alonso back in 2003 but Flav got him a drive at Renault.

bar Lewis Hamilton no driver will drive for just one team, so Vettel could drive for a Mercedes powered team and Ferrari.

  • lou26/10/2009 at 23:52

    #wurzwatch

Looks like he has been to a few GP's this year

    Monaco

    Turkey

    Germany

    Hungary

    Valencia

    Singapore

    Japan

Okay... so it looks like he's actually been there alot and i just haven't seen him...however looking at the pic from Germany it looks like he's doing more work for Mercedes than he is for Brawn now.

  • Lukeh26/10/2009 at 23:56

It;s official. If it's Brawn related, nothing get's past Lou :P

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 00:01

gosh i think the whole audience is going to be blog competition winners! Good luck uk folk and those who can get there! I enjoyed top gear live last year even with the fake ferraris :D

What are you doing up at this time?

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 00:12

What are you doing up at this time?

she's in the office. It's past 10 am where she is.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 00:13

I suspect not even Lewis is exempt from that rule. Who knows, he

might suddenly be in a Ferrari after Alonso leaves/retires.

  • Steven Roy27/10/2009 at 00:14

I would be amazed if he never left McLaren. The generation of drivers that have just retired have massively skewed our expectations of how long drivers will spend with any one team

  • lou27/10/2009 at 00:17

I can't cope with time zones

they are confusing...of course you have to be careful with not only the time, but the days too :P

  • me27/10/2009 at 00:18

Schumi, DC, Mika spent ages with the same team.

  • Journeyer27/10/2009 at 00:20

    oi!

she wasn't necessarily referring to you. You seem to be too defensive. Wehehehe. :p

  • lou27/10/2009 at 00:21

    oi!

;) hehe it's true though, i hear it's really easy to do :D

(before you kill me i would have done exactly the same!)
