We spent quite a lot of Saturday finishing off our move, but at least we are done now. All bar the unpacking of the boxes this end. I'll save that for another day though, eh? Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about at the moment:

  • Jake has published his latest blog post, and it seems as though there is quite a lot of throwing up in there. Considering this is what I struggled with in the last live stream, what are the chances that Mr C will get me to read bits of this in today's Debrief?
  • Although we have seen a lot of the video and images from the new Yas Marina circuit already, F1 Wolf has gathered them together in a handy blog post. If you have yet to peruse the new track or want a reminder of what to look out for next weekend, check it out.
  • Norbert Haug has said today that McLaren aren't interested in getting involved with a bidding war for a new driver next year, although they are very open about the fact they are searching for a new driver #sorryamy. He also said that Kimi "is an option, but there are lots of options around." We want something more concrete than that!

Anyway, that's enough chatter to be going on with. We'll be around and about today as we prepare for the Debrief later this afternoon. I'll see you in the comments.

Indeed. We still don't know who will be filling 20 seats next year yet!

We want something more concrete than that!

It will be Kimi. He is just using Toyota to bump his price up and McLaren are using Button to knock it back down again

  • James24/10/2009 at 23:07

that doesn't make sense to me now, anyone else?

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 23:07

Jake has been busy. He presented the football on BBC2 earlier tonight as well.

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 23:09

I am not up to date on the numbers but there are not many drivers confirmed for next years so there must be close to 20 seats with no confirmed drivers

Indeed, it was more how I worded it that I was worried about. :) I imagine we are going to get a whole load of annoucments in one go.

Which i guess i will be watching as I cant access skyplayer. grrrr.

we've travelled back in time!!! and as such, i have another hour before i need to go to sleep. i like how this works

thats so much better than being robbed of an hour of sleep like what happened to me. Although that means summer is starting so I can't complain to much, I much prefer the start of summer to the end of it.

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:05

    ...what time is now??

depends when you class the clocks as going back

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:05

thats so much better than being robbed of an hour of sleep like what happened to me. Although that means summer is starting so I can't complain to much, I much prefer the start of summer to the end of it.

you're having the start of summer?

but its really cold now, and getting colder...oh wait, yeah, thats exactly like british summer

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:05

depends when you class the clocks as going back

    i.might.cry.

amy's right, the comments just jumped back. not a wordpress fail. mr. c. fail.

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:05

we did change them, but it was weeks ago!

Everyone should change them all on the same day. It would be hugely confusing but at least it would be so for everyone all at once.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:06

    ...what time is now??

    Tecnicaly it is 0:05.

but we put the clocks back wrongly in this country so their is a discepency beteween the time according to GMT and the time acording to the time people for n hour or 2 which is really stupid

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:07

    i.might.cry.

there is one good thing in all this....some how, and i have no idea how, the [1 new] has disapeared from my chrome browser! score!

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:07

My computer clock has told me that it will go back at 2am. strange thing

This is correct for Windows systems and also officially.

  • Amy25/10/2009 at 00:07

Everyone should change them all on the same day. It would be hugely confusing but at least it would be so for everyone all at once.

Australia is hugely confusing, in the winter NSW, VIC and QLD are all on the same time, but at the moment QLD is an hour behind because they don't change their clocks. And WA goes from 2 hours to 3 hours behind because they don't either.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:07

In every other country isn't 2am the official "change them now" time?

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:08

    ahh, wordpress fail

    redacted.

i think everything worked. and worked so well it confused me.

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:08

This is correct for Windows systems and also officially.

    so... hold on... apple fail?

but we put the clocks back wrongly in this country so their is a discepency beteween the time according to GMT and the time acording to the time people for n hour or 2 which is really stupid

The time is 1.07am BST. The switch will occur at 2.00am BST, at which point we will be at 1.00am GMT. Dad said earlier this is due to licensing laws.. otherwise pubs due to close at midnight would open an hour longer..

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:08

In every other country isn't 2am the official "change them now" time?

I think itis, but from a mathmatical perspective it is wrong.

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:08

    so... hold on... apple fail?

go ahead, make my day :D

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:09

    so... hold on... apple fail?

If your system clock ticked over to 1am a few minutes ago, it is fine. It'll change in 50 mins or so.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:10

whcih 3am are u2 going to play at the old or the new?

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:10

will the comments be mixed up with the ones we made an hour ago?

nope. comment submitted dates are stored twice, once as UTC/GMT which is used for comment ordering and also, in local time, which is used for display.

i say it like i know what i'm talking about... and was prepared and everything.

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:10

whcih 3am are u2 going to play at the old or the new?

    i think... 3:30 new time.

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:11

Where are they playing? Find out what weekend they change their clocks, is it before or after us? We may have a temporary difference in timezones.

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:11

therwise pubs due to close at midnight would open an hour longer..

are they not 24 hour now?

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:11

Spa petiton to get things moving again,

It's all in french but is quite self explanitory, "pays" is country and "ville" is number.

    Merci!

Where are they playing? Find out what weekend they change their clocks, is it before or after us? We may have a temporary difference in timezones.

I have no idea, we used to be in sync with the US, but they changed their clock change dates a year or so ago so we are all out of kilter

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:12

are they not 24 hour now?

most just have extended hours, there are very few 24 hour ones. they extended them so that pubs can choose their own closing time, so everyone dosent get kicked out onto the streets at the same time.

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:12

Yeah but the whole DST thing hasn't been updated since then

    right.

    life is confusing.

i have comments that say different.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:13

I thought pays meant table as in 'vin de pays'

    and doesnt ville mean town?

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 00:14

    and doesnt ville mean town?

    oh. really?

well they jsut got my mobile number.

clearly the fact that its now an hour earlier (but really its not) makes no difference to my sleeping habits, me go sleep now! night all

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:14

It could be worse... You could be rummaging though cupboards making a huge mess of places you tidied up yesterday to find an infernal windows cd!

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:15

I have no idea, we used to be in sync with the US, but they changed their clock change dates a year or so ago so we are all out of kilter

I just checked Wiki. The US changes next week. That means for this week only we have a 4hr difference to Eastern, not a 5hr difference.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 00:15

well they jsut got my mobile number.

    hahaha, that genuinly amused me!

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 00:15

Its the way it should happen.

It makes sense that the clocks change at the begining of the day, not at an arbitary point in the middle of it as i see it

i really haven;t been paying attention, but from the press release:

U2 have confirmed via video blog that their sold-out concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, this Sunday, 25th October, will be streamed free, in full and live on YouTube. It's the first time a show of this size will be streamed live.

The Rose Bowl show is the penultimate U2 show this year - with more to come in 2010 - and already is set to host the venue's biggest ever audience of over 96,000 fans. The 360° Tour, which has been critically acclaimed and 're-invents rock'n'roll' (Rolling Stone Magazine), will now boast unique access for fans worldwide - as fans in territories yet to be visited by the tour, or not at all, will be able to enjoy the whole show online.

next you're gonna want a stage map on the lclt.

  • me25/10/2009 at 00:23

    which will feel like 4:30am?

hehe I actualy only learned to to do it by being a navigator in a car when we did off road organised drives, for a long time i had to think of the car to know which was left and which was right!

Remember when everyone got obsessed with the millennium bug. That was funny.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:45

I guess it's a bit funny that the Mail was one of the papers that began the rumor, and now they'll be one of the first to kill it:

Button turns his back on dream team with Hamilton

Although I want to quote this:

That leaves only the thought of what might have been had McLaren put together the most potent partnership since Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost ruled the

world for the Woking-based outfit in the late Eighties.

He MUST be drunk, surely. He forgot about Alonso-Hamilton...

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:46

it fixes itself. it might be skynet.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:46

Remember when everyone got obsessed with the millennium bug. That was funny.

Well, if no one prepared for it, there could've been carnage. At least the paranoia made everyone prepare.

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:47

I guess it's a bit funny that the Mail was one of the papers that began the rumor, and now they'll be one of the first to kill it:

what better way to generate content?

That leaves only the thought of what might have been had McLaren put together the most potent partnership since Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost ruled the world

ahh, the dailymail are into f1 fan fiction too. nice.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 01:47

    Errr prepare for what?

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:48

You know, fix the systems and whatnot. The bunkers were OTT, but most of everything else was fine.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:48

what better way to generate content?

    You make an excellent point.

ahh, the dailymail are into f1 fan fiction too. nice.

    :D

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:48

    Errr prepare for what?

it was a genuine problem. you might've been annoyed if all your money in your bank vanished, or if the phone simply stopped routing calls.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 01:50

it was a genuine problem. you might've been annoyed if all your money in your bank vanished, or if the phone simply stopped routing calls.

Wasnt it massively exagerated so people could make money ensuring you were 'Y2K complaint'? i seem to remember a lot of those people doing audits, they must have made millions!

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:52

Now here's an interesting thought - PF1 may have made a good point for once. Jean Todt should appoint Ari Vatanen as WRC Commissioner. It allows Todt to show he's magnanimous in defeat, he mends up with Vatanen, and it allows a truly respected name in WRC to fix what's become a badly damaged sport.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 01:52

Microsoft marketed some sort of software to ensure home pcs were millennium proof. I'm not sure about anyone elses but mine just plodded along as before.

A family friend went totally nutty over it. He was convinced civilisation was gonna collapse or something, He started storing up tins of food and drums of petrol in preparation!

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:53

A family friend went totally nutty over it. He was convinced civilisation was gonna collapse or something, He started storing up tins of food and drums of petrol in preparation!

As I said, that bit's OTT. Expect the same to happen as we approach December 2012.

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:54

Wasnt it massively exagerated so people could make money ensuring you were 'Y2K complaint'? i seem to remember a lot of those people doing audits, they must have made millions!

i'm sure many people capitalised on the fear. newspapers for certain.

but, i saw and fixed code that would've caused problems. not massive problems i grant ya, but there were issues that needed resolving.

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:56

A family friend went totally nutty over it. He was convinced civilisation was gonna collapse or something, He started storing up tins of food and drums of petrol in preparation!

    that wasn't a realistic risk.

but i know companies that handed out x3 mobiles to every person working that night. one from each network provider because no-one knew if the phones would simply turn off.

and no-one knew, because even the mobile operators couldn't be 100% sure.

  • me25/10/2009 at 01:57

As I said, that bit's OTT. Expect the same to happen as we approach December 2012.

i think it'll be a lesser issue, unless it's a really slow news month.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:58

i think it'll be a lesser issue, unless it's a really slow news month.

news outlets are reporting on it now - in November 2009.

Even if it's a good news month, any news of wars or calamities will trigger the discussion again.

Ok working on 2 theories stopping kimi going to Mclaren.

1)they want lewis to be there highest paid driver, they may be unwilling to match lewis's salery for kimi which could be his key demand.

    2) (this may be linked) Didnt Ron fall out with Kimi? as a major shareholder he could well be holding the deal up to settle a score or two. perhaps push kimis price down further?

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 01:59

    2) (this may be linked) Didnt Ron fall out with Kimi? as a major shareholder he could well be holding the deal up to settle a score or two. perhaps push kimis price down further?

but i thought Ron wasn't involved with the racing team anymore, ergo McLaren became an option again?

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 01:59

but i know companies that handed out x3 mobiles to every person working that night. one from each network provider because no-one knew if the phones would simply turn off.

Logic would say to m that since they are all GSM based... If one fails, they all fail?

It was pretty obvious when nothing happened in Aus and NZ that it was all a giant storm in a teacup to me.

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:00

Logic would say to m that since they are all GSM based... If one fails, they all fail?

not sure how you conclude that?

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:00

but i thought Ron wasn't involved with the racing team anymore, ergo McLaren became an option again?

He isnt, but i am sure the board would have to approve huge salerys like the drivers.

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:01

It was pretty obvious when nothing happened in Aus and NZ that it was all a giant storm in a teacup to me.

because nothing happened, it was all bunkem?

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 02:01

He isnt, but i am sure the board would have to approve huge salerys like the drivers.

    true.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:02

not sure how you conclude that?

Why would the fault effect one network and not 2 others working on the same system?

If they used CDMA over here, it would make sense to me to use one of those phones...

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:03

because nothing happened, it was all bunkem?

Not the problem, the idea that the world was going to fall apart. I remember the news channels having 'millenium bug watch' segments, expecting power failiures and traffic chaos, they ran it untill about 6 GMT then gave up as their were no stories.

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:04

Why would the fault effect one network and not 2 others working on the same system?

because different groups of engineers were working for the separate companies and evaluating / fixing bespoke systems.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:07

because different groups of engineers were working for the separate companies and evaluating / fixing bespoke systems.

Its possible, i wouldn't expect them to be all that different though.

If i was making a contingency plans i wouldnt bet on any of them staying up if one of them went down though, CB radios would have been my bet

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:08

Not the problem, the idea that the world was going to fall apart.

the people writing the stories simply didn't understand the problem. i'm certain that i didn't think the world would fall apart. but i do know that the problem did exist.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:08

If i was making a contingency plans i wouldnt bet on any of them staying up if one of them went down though, CB radios would have been my bet

CB radios? I mean walkie talky hand held thigymbobs

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:10

what kind of range will you get from those though?

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:10

the people writing the stories simply didn't understand the problem. i'm certain that i didn't think the world would fall apart. but i do know that the problem did exist.

Im sure it did, but people dont get excited by code, and people dont spend money based on things they dont understand, the whole thing got whipped up so badly even governments were going to military alert levels because of it

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:11

what kind of range will you get from those though?

I dont know how they work over here, i havent seen anyone offering the service, they seem to be limited to the range of the handset which wouldnt be all that usefull

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 02:13

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 02:17

Could prove problematic getting across Manchester never mind to it. Bear in mind a really good CB radio before they were legalised and ruined only had 120 channels

was probably for the best the phones kept running :)

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:27

Right, found what i was thinking of, Its called Push to talk (PTT)

Works like a walkie talki=y, in local area, but uses a mobile network to have the same functionality even if the other person is in the pub i Manchester ;)

2 problems, noone seems to offer it here, and it still relies on the mobile network!

  • Amy25/10/2009 at 02:31

wikipedia says 2.5g, which was post '99 wasn't it?

it makes no odds really. the people involved did a brilliant job of making sure nothing caused issues. maybe we needed a couple of failures to convince the masses, i've no idea.

    Its normally common practice...

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:35

After all... the ratcatcher who kills all the rats is out of a job...

but rats don't have an explicit cut-off point, before they never return. once things were proven to work, everyone was out of a job.

no-one's fixing millennium bugs in 2009 are they?

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:36

ps. you're far to cynical for your own good ;)

  • Amy25/10/2009 at 02:36

my issue right now is that I have lost all motivation to leave the house and suddenly buying groceries online and having them delivered tomorrow really appeals.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:37

    It could still strike :(

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 02:37

my issue right now is that I have lost all motivation to leave the house and suddenly buying groceries online and having them delivered tomorrow really appeals.

Have groceries delivered and go for a fun walk instead

  • me25/10/2009 at 02:38

it could, but so could any software bug and the chances are minimal.

all the walks I like doing in Melbourne require a tram ride to get there first and that is why I can't be bothered :D

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 02:39

ps. you're far to cynical for your own good ;)

hehe, i remember hearing a story about when they first introduced Japanese cars to the states which were far more reliable than thoise on the market. The american car makers were stunned at how stupid the japanese were, they thought they were making a huge error as they wouldn't be able to make money selling spare parts if the cars didnt break down...

I worked in th Ukraine a few months after the end of Soviet communism. The local sports store double as the car parts store. There was one type of oil filter, one type of air filter, one type of spark plug etc. Who would have thought communism would sort out the problems of minimising the number of lines businesses had to carry and therefore maximising profit?

God! People, just buy an aviator's watch and set the second hour arm to GMT. If you really want to be silly about it, or you're a Newfie, buy an aviator's watch with a completly second face with that one face set to the weird half-hour (Newfie Time) zone and the other is set to GMT.

125cc and 250cc races are run in perfectly dry, sunshiny conditions.

    Then a storm hits Sepang.

Track soaking wet right now, although the rain has been reduced to a drizzle. It'll probably be a race in changeable conditions, with pitstops to change bikes.

    Morning all.

    Wet at Sepang? Surely not!

We want something more concrete than that!

Well, at the moment, word on the street is that M-B is so keen to get in to Brawn and turn it into a fully branded 'Silver Arrows' team that it is prepared to offload its stake in McLaren to the other shareholders for a nominal sum. Negotiations are ongoing, as they say; the obstacle is the existing engine deal, which is in place until 2011/2012 (I forget which).

This will also be good for McLaren, which is in the absurd situation of not being able to use its star asset, a Mr Lewis Hamilton, to promote its new road car in any way, shape or form.

Other thing I heard was that Kimi's severance was paid by Santander and that he may even end up taking a sabbatical. His management's attempts to play McLaren and Toyota off against one another aren't cutting much ice, man.

WOW. So you mean the partnership may be done before next season even begins? That's huge.

This will also be good for McLaren, which is in the absurd situation of not being able to use its star asset, a Mr Lewis Hamilton, to promote its new road car in any way, shape or form.

But let's say the partnership is done before next year. Would it be possible that McLaren agree to being a B-type-team in 2010, while they prepare for a McLaren-engined McLaren in 2011?

Other thing I heard was that Kimi's severance was paid by Santander and that he may even end up taking a sabbatical. His management's attempts to play McLaren and Toyota off against one another aren't cutting much ice, man.

Haaang on. So he really left Ferrari without a sure seat?! That's nuts. And we all know what happened the last time a Finn went on sabbatical...

Mind you, if that happens, I think he'll come back to racing - just not back to F1; he'll be in rally instead.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 08:45

Haaang on. So he really left Ferrari without a sure seat?! That's nuts. And we all know what happened the last time a Finn went on sabbatical...

So who'd end up in the 2nd McLaren seat, then? I suspect it could be Heidfeld... Or we could see a twist and end up with Sutil at Woking.

So you mean the partnership may be done before next season even begins?

Stranger things have happened. But this is just paddock gossip anyway; it may be wrong, and even if it's right, these things are a moveable feast so it may not happen. Wheels within wheels and all that.

True. But the realization that it may actually end this early (even if it doesn't actually happen) is shocking in and of itself. I mean, had Brawn not made it, the story may be different.

We want something more concrete than that!

What we want is to hear Kimi has a drive with Macca next year... if not my F1 travels will be seriously curtailed...

Other thing I heard was that Kimi’s severance was paid by Santander and that he may even end up taking a sabbatical.

    Purrrlease say it isn't so...

The sun may be shining outside but suddenly Mr SC has allowed a big dark cloud to drift over....

In the words of the song... if that's true then... "It might as well rain until September".... that's next September!...

Is anybody else following the final few stages of this year's World Rally Championship?

It looks like Sebastian Loeb will win his 6th drivers title by a point or two by winning Rally GB. Hirvonen looked like he might catch Loeb but on Stage 15 of 16, he lost a minute and a bit. I don't know why yet.

Is Seb in a no. 22 car and set to finish 5th? If so, he has a good chance

HaHa. No, he has been in Car 1 for many years in a row now and he is about to 'win in style'

Miko Hirvonen had the bonnet fly up in the last stage and that has cost him the rally unless Loeb fails to finish. It's pretty much decided now.

"I don't mind who comes to the team as long as they come in peace and bring peace and want to be productive and move the team forward," Hamilton told the Daily Mail.

um, interesting - I noted the "who comes" which suggests some one is leaving. Given Jarno's body language following the incident with Adrian he is excluded. I thing Ruben's blah blah blah is not really very peaceful. Since Kimi likes pushing press photographers over this is not a very peace-making public relations exercise. Jenson, being world champion would expect some privileged, the last time McLaren explored the option of hiring the World Champion it was hardly peaceful. We are left with three-and-a-half Germans. Rumour has it that Nico is off to Brawn. Toyota have not mentioned Timo but have now mentioned that Jarno could be considered suggesting Timo has a drive elsewhere (no guessing where that is) so obviously Lewis wants Nick or Adrian as his team-mate. Good choice.

Given what was said earlier about Kimi possibly taking a sabbatical.

We know that Kimi was being paid £25million per year. We also know Ferrari have signed a five-year £175m agreement to get Fernando. Could it be Fernando at £25million per year for 5 years and £25million as severance pay for Kimi providing he does not drive for another team?

The team appears to have offered Jenson £8m a year. That is not exactly a poor salary - if I remember correctly DeSeb gets only about £1m a year. Jenson and his management are being a little greedy rather than Brawn.

Lewis's salary has been rumoured to rise to $17m as part of the new deal. An extra $6m will be added to that if he secures McLaren's first title in almost a decade.

  • Journeyer25/10/2009 at 12:53

true. but £8m doesn't sound like much to me, from a manufacturer backed team.

the Merc money doesn't seem to be available to Brawn just yet, which may be why drivers salaries are limited. but I suspect the Merc money may come through in the bonuses for each win.

  • James25/10/2009 at 12:53

but Brawn aren't backed by a manufacturer, they are an independent team. The Mercedes deal hasn't been confirmed yet.

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 12:53

BrawnGP and Ferrari are different teams though. I don't think any of them should paid anything in that region, but at the end of the day Ferrari and McLaren will offer large contracts to get the drivers they want.

Ferrari are not paying - their sponsor is so it is rather academic to the team. Unless Brawn gets Mercedes as a full sponsor he does not have a fairy Godfather like Santander so it directly impacts on the team and who else it employs.

If musicians can take a chunk of everyone that itsens to their music, regardless of wheter they listen to it or not, shouldnt f1 drivers take a chunk of the revenues of whoever is exposed to them racing//i.e. doing marketing and entertaining people?

here was a thing on the news the otherday saying how businesses had to pay roylaties if they wanted to play music. One of the customers said he didnt think that was right as he didnt like a lot of the songs and didnt think they should be getting royalties for music he didnt like.

I thought that was a really good point. Completely un policeable, but really good

Thanks so Jenson wants the same salary as Lewis gets (without the bonus attached to constructor title). Lewis then needs to have a driver who scores lots of points (but not more than himself). Still seems Nick is the best option.

Actually my first choice would be to get Kimi back with Adrian Newey at Red Bull but, as that's not a runner, Macca will do OK, especially with the discerning Mr Whitmarsh's comments in F1 mag....

And I'd support him at Toyota, or Williams, or Toro Rosso, or WRC if that's where he goes....

    PS Who is Lewis?....

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 13:10

in terms of relations to sports people, doesn't that beckham get exactly what you're suggesting?

He does, I dont have a problem with them getting it If thats the value attached to it.

I think the system which puts that value on them is wrong, but still.

My problem with younger footballers is that they know they are going to weathy from such a young age now, they become people I dont paticulary want to watch.

Music and F1 are much harder disciplnes to both enter and succeed at so the people involved in them are generaly more balanced.

Hoever at footballer at 12 years old will probably know if he will become a pro or not. Even if he ends up at a couple of levels from the top he will still be very wealthy

Says it all that Lewis has welcomed the idea of just about any other driver on the grid as a team mate....

If I type in "f1 driver salaries" I do not get anything similar. My first return is

    http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/01/whats-an-f1-driver-worth/

    Which says

"Nick Heidfeld, ever the pragmatist, is quoted today saying that if drivers are to be asked to take a pay cut, so be it, ” We have to adjust ourselves just like everyone else.” Actually Nick is pretty good value at approximately £2.8 million per season. It’s the £30 odd million Raikkonen gets or the £20 million Alonso scoops up, which give the eye catching numbers. The average, according to Formula Money, is £5.5 million. So what are the drivers worth in the current economic climate?"

Lewis was not happy about Nico joining. I am afraid the results of the last two seasons suggest that Felipe is better (you pay less and get more).

The car will be designed around Lewis's style not Kimi's.

  • Lady Snowcat25/10/2009 at 13:15

Thing is, if the car’s designed around Lewis (which it probably will be), where does that leave Kimi?

The team knows what Kimi needs and has never had a problem supplying it before... it was only the engines that stopped him winning in 2005... they'll be better placed than Ferrari to give him a car that suits him...

Oh and as the premium will be on making tyres last for as long as possible on a heavy fuel load you may have spotted who ran longest on the option tyres at Interlagos and who got off them as soon as possible....

If your talking about Kimi running them the longest then it has something to with the car. The Ferrari is apparently kinder to the tyres.

    Only in the right hands...

And actually I think you'll find Lewis prefers understeer too so that'll be fine...

As to Lewis not fancying Nico either I think that's due to the fact that Nico is good at feedback (like Kimi) as he nearly did engineering at Uni and that's why Williams like him...

  • Lady Snowcat25/10/2009 at 13:24

Maybe you’re being a bit harsh – Jenson said the same about Prost… They just wanna look up to someone. Nothing wrong with that is there?

Apparently although Nick has a good engineering mind (he was accepted at Imperial) it does not always translate to the engineers. he is certainly is still better than Jenson who often has had to be guided by the set-up Rubens uses.

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 13:27

And actually I think you'll find Lewis prefers understeer too so that'll be fine...

Oh - I thought Lewis liked an oversteering car and Fernando an understeering car.

    That's not what I understand...

Quite often in 2007 Lewis's technique was compared to Kimi's..

Alonso like to have a big input going into the corner to unsettle the car .... that's not great when you have understeer...

  • RG25/10/2009 at 13:33

Good news, the match did kick off at the time I went out. Bad news, we lost, again.

Thinking of doing some blogging till the debrief so I'll be in and out.

Not so sure about the translation as I don't think Patrick would be as keen as he is if that was the case...

As to Rubens and Jense I understand that he was in good company as a certain Mr Schu. did the same...

Actually how many of Michael's WDCs came when Rubens was his assigned wingman?... that'll be 5 out of 7... pretty good Rubens you are the perfect No. 2 ....

Always the bridesmaid... (obviously never caught the bouquet)...

  • Jeremy25/10/2009 at 13:37

Alonso like to have a big input going into the corner to unsettle the car .... that's not great when you have understeer...

I think a lot of people were guided by how much understeer the 05 and 06 Renault had. That was fun to watch

  • Lady Snowcat25/10/2009 at 13:40

If Alfonso does like understeer then he and Massa are going to be seriously incompatible...

    Massa hates it...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/10/2009 at 13:40

Mr. C, I have some bad news. Sit down before you read the rest of the comment...

    .

    .

    .

Rene Dif (the baldy from Aqua) has been voted off the Danish version of Strictly Come Dancing. He has been in the bottom two for a few weeks and for this week's show, he couldn't be there as he had an Aqua concert to be at. So he pre-recorded his Rumba at last week's show (meaning he had to learn 3 dances in one week, while the others learned two) in front of last week's audience.

Unfortunately he wasn't very good and the judges panned him. Add to that an opinion poll the day before in the paper where Denmark said that they did not agree that he should have been allowed to miss the show, and he had no chance of going through.

Sorry about that - thought you should know :(

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 13:41

    Massa hates it...

Huh, i thought Massa loved understeer, everything i heard last year was thatt the ferrari understeered too much and Kimi couldnt deal with it, but massa loved it?

  • Jeremy25/10/2009 at 13:44

maybe its like the online service my company offers, we only offer it to pcs because we cant get the DRM right on macs.

Our website says “Unfortunately, at this stage, the Apple OSX operating system does not support Microsoft’s Silverlight Implementation of DRM, which is what we use to secure content”

Foxtel works really well on the iPhone though. Come on Foxtel (and Sky) - work it out!

    Phew...

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 13:47

As to Rubens and Jense I understand that he was in good company as a certain Mr Schu. did the same...

I think waht I was trying to say Nico is not Rubens is very very good at car set up on terms of practicality. He who should not be mentioned certainly used Rubens set up.

I am now so confused on the under/oversteer- I always thought Felipe wants more understeer, Kimi more oversteer. So I thought Alonso and Felipe will use similar car set ups, and finally Alsono and Lewis had diametrically opposed set ups.

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 13:49

    Kimi and Lewis love OVERSTEER...

It might be y'know... just that Kimi is the one accused of being in it for the money, isn't he? I thought Jenson wanted what he is worth?

Mr C, you've got some high expectations here.

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 14:08

There is one driver on the grid that is prepared to drive for less with the recession. Nick said last January should expect to get less salaries along with other other people.

“Therefore we will have to adjust ourselves to it, just like everyone else,”

He also sees keeping jobs for the teams an important aspect on discussing the budget caps for the teams.

“At the moment it is not really an issue, and I hope that there are other ways so that nobody loses their jobs"

Is this not hungry enough for McLaren?

  • Christine25/10/2009 at 14:10

    but not on the doohickey?

It will not affect the doohickey or the LCLT.

  • jackie/saltire25/10/2009 at 14:10

I can't imagine Kimi back at McLaren with the short haircut, normal cap and attending sponsor briefings

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 14:10

Connecting Norbert's recent comment about McLaren not wanting to pay Kimi's asking price. Here are two other alleged quotes from the McLaren team.

    Martin Whitmarsh talking about Nick

"He is the most under rated driver in Formula One,"

and Norbert Haug adding "He brings over ten years of consistently strong performances."

oh and the record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is held by Nick driving a Macca F1 car back in 1999! Here is a clip of that record.

yes, but in honestly they are not allowed to go for records now due to the risks. I still think Nick is perfect for Macca given recent statements (including Lewis not really wanting either Kimi or Nico), both as a driver and his no-nonsense attitude.

Change No. 3 (and the most important) - http://www.sidepodcast.com/blog/

This is not the new homepage, but is the stripped down equivalent. It doesn't look at all good right now, because as the message says we're working on performance rather than design.

The seasons and archives tab take you to the playground. The search is awesome, and the Home tab takes you to Ye Olde Sidepodcast. There is a link on the left hand side of Ye Olde Sidepodcast to get to the blog if you need to.

If all goes well, the old page will be replaced by Wednesday.

on that subject, we're experimenting with caching on the /blog/ page. so the title will likely only update a few times a day.

there is no caching on the search page, so it updates with every refresh. we're basically doing back-to-back comparisons f1 style.

as a quick test. do a hard refresh on the hompage and the same on /blog/ they both contain mostly the same info, but one is significantly quicker.

that is where all the works been directed since summer. making things faster.

As far as Nick Heidfeld is concerned there is an interesting thing about how he performs best when the car isn't good...

But when the car is good he fades away...

Makes him perfect for one of the new teams....

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 14:57

There would be a wonderfull circular irony if he got the Macca drive...

He is still fast - in Brazil he started 18th on the grid and was in 10th and catching Vettel when he pitted around lap 20.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 14:58

He is still fast - in Brazil he started 18th on the grid and was in 10th and catching Vettel when he pitted around lap 20.

Yes, but 5 cars got KO'd on the first lap carnage...

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 15:01

But when the car is good he fades away...

Not altogether true, sure Robert was better than him last year but that was due to qualifying during the race he was often quicker on average aggregates. Nick was still less down on speed/points to Robert than Kimi was to Felipe all last season. When Nick teamed with Webber he got two seconds and a pole position compared to Mark's none. He is just not pushy the way the other drivers are.

  • Scott Woodwiss25/10/2009 at 15:02

Hey maybe us SPC Forza 3 players should get together online and make a video :D

  • Lady Snowcat25/10/2009 at 15:02

He'd be a Heikki Mark II... and no-one believes that if he and Kimi had the same price tag that anyone would go for Nick....

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 15:02

Yes, but 5 cars got KO'd on the first lap carnage...

Sure but it still means he passed drivers and was behind Vettel and putting faster times in than the Red Bull driver! Everyone say look at Button and how many cars he overtook at Brazil.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/10/2009 at 15:02

Alonso could have won the race....

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 15:08

No you can't, but he managed to avoid them didn't he? Not everyone was so lucky!

Of course yes, but after the saftey car he was 9th rather than 14th!

It was a great achivement to get up to 5th, doing on the track rather than with strategy

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 15:08

He'd be a Heikki Mark II... and no-one believes that if he and Kimi had the same price tag that anyone would go for Nick....

True, we do not know the reason Macca selected Kimi over Nick since Nick had outperformed Kimi the previous year when they were team mates. Nick also comprehensively outperformed Felipe when they were team mates. If Nick had got a Macca or Ferrari drive early in his career he "might" be the one everyone wants to hire now. As an Formula 3000 driver he was devastatingly fast, in his first season he was runner up to Montoya!

  • Scott Woodwiss25/10/2009 at 15:10

You thought Kimster was dodgy on PF? I tried passing him countless times at Laguna Seca just now and every time I had a look he blocked me Kept moving across my line every time. Then he came across me when I was just alongside him, he clipped my front end and spun.

I'm not a dirty driver like that. But to be fair, say if someone does start hitting my rear end or trying to have me off, I will do it back if possible, to let them know I'm no pushover!

But no, I try and race as fairly as possible while at the same time giving just the right amount of aggression. :P

I think you'll find that can't be true...

Kimi was only finally overtaken at Valencia when his engine blew....

He also won the DHL most fastest laps prize...

And Nick's difference to Robert only really became less than Kimi's to Massa in the last two races and that was when Kimi gifted Massa a 4 point difference plus played rear gunner and gave away another two points...

True, we do not know the reason Macca selected Kimi over Nick since Nick had outperformed Kimi the previous year when they were team mates.

But as Kimi had only actually been in 23 car races by the start of 2001...

Nick had done 87 (including 17 in F1) plus a year as test driver for Macca and Prost...

    And Kimi ran him close...

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 15:20
  • Rich25/10/2009 at 15:25

And Nick's difference to Robert only really became less than Kimi's to Massa in the last two races and that was when Kimi gifted Massa a 4 point difference plus played rear gunner and gave away another two points...

Remember it was effective team orders that gave Robert BMW's victory - Nick is one of the most difficult drivers to pass due to a very smooth style but was heavy with fuel so had to let Robert pass for the Canadian victory (so that equals the gifting). If you examine Gavin's table of driver consistency during the race the picture is clear Nick is one of the fastest drivers and can overtake. He is similar to Jenson, their style is compromised with the current tyres and needing to be more aggression in qualifying. Both drivers make rather few errors. Next year looking after tyres will be a bigger issue so Nick, Jenson and Timo may gain advantage.

    And Kimi ran him close...

Sure Kimi had less experience but he was not as fast at the time. Macca made a statement that they thought Kimi had more potential to improve to explain their decision. I say that Macca should now give Nick the opportunity to show what he can do. I rate him as highly as Jenson since they have such similar driving styles.

Just remember Felipe gifted Brazil 2007 to Kimi so he could become world champion. Felipe has more often outperformed Kimi in terms of racing results since they have been team mates.

I have noticed that odds for World Championship for next year have already been produced by Skybet. This does not take into account what car each driver will be in. I was surprised the Red Bull drivers were not higher.

    Hamilton, L 5/2

    Alonso, F 7/2

    Raikkonen, K 11/2

    Vettel, S 6/1

    Massa, F 7/1

    Button, J 9/1

    Webber, M 11/1

    Rosberg, N 14/1

    Barrichello, R 16/1

    Kubica, R 20/1

    Hulkenburg, N 50/1

    Heidfeld, N 80/1

    Trulli, J 100/1

    Glock, T 100/1

    Kovalainen, H 125/1

    Buemi, S 250/1

    Fisichella, G 250/1

    Sutil, A 250/1

    Nakajima, K 500/1

    Piquet, N 1000/1

It doesn't? Even if they were taken into account, 6/1 sounds about right, considering RBR don't even know what engine they're running next year yet - and it's probably not a Merc.

Should probably tell you how it went with the mother-in-law's computer I mentioned that I said I was fixing yesterday.

The computer is from 2004 and doesn't even have a DVD drive. It's very old and slow, but I did manage to fix it and make it a lot faster with very little effort.

The biggest problem was the TDC security pack, which includes a horrible anti-virus program which is based on Norman Sandbox. It was using most of the CPU just ticking over. So that was removed and replaced with Avast.

I also ran Ccleaner, defraggler, disabled all the default XP visual candy, replaced Adobe reader with Foxit, installled Google Chrome, ran a virus scan (found two viruses), removed printer drivers for a printer they threw out last year, and re-organised the desktop which had nearly a gig's worth of files on it.

It's still slow, but at least it's usable now - I did tell them they should look at a new one though ;)

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 16:10

It doesn't? Even if they were taken into account, 6/1 sounds about right, considering RBR don't even know what engine they're running next year yet - and it's probably not a Merc.

That is a good point, but they have Kimi as third highest odds and he does not even have a drive. I think if Kimi did join Macca, Lewis will humilimate him, if Felipe can be better while being nominally the second driver what chance has Kimi to beat Lewis who has a car and team virtually designed around him. I am also convinced that Lewis is a vastly faster driver.

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 16:14

Button doesnt looka bad bet at 9/1

Remember the Brawn was rumoured to have had some £500 million invested into its development. Jenson will stay at Brawn - I am convinced and Nico will join him. I know most people will expect Nico to be faster, if this proves so it will be because Jenson is not so good at set-up.

Red Bull are desperate to get Merc engines and are therefore going to have to settle for second best or worst because McLaren are not going to let Newey have the engine that can have the tightest packaging on the grid.

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 16:21

I think there will be little between Lewis and Kimi. The McLaren will suit either both of them or neither of them because they have the same driving style.

Red Bull and Merc would be a serious contender. They may go Cosworth but I think they should stick to Renault - it has a fairly secrete but significant advanatage over every other engine on the track next year.

I am really surprised, especially if you tried Mint. I do not use Mint (I use Pardus) - but have never had an issue with any of those. Sure you have to use Open Office rather MS Office that is about as big a jump as you have to make. You can also make a USB bootable stick and test before leaping.

I am working on a Windows PC which I simply cannot download the latest Adobe Flashplayer. I think the AV screwing something up. Wish I knew somewhere other than Adobe to get access the file for installing.

The most robust and lightest Linux is something like CrunchBang - but you need to know to mouse click on the screen to get the menus.

My feeling is Linux goes from Brilliant to the absolute Aweful in terms of comaptibility. Good flavours are LinuxMint, Crunchbang, Mephis, Pardus, Ubuntu. Bad flavours are anything that are based on Arch, pure Gentoo or Slackware. They are not bad in themselves but you have to play to get them to work.

Which is the easiest to use and the best to download onto a USB stick to try out?

Try this site - its is the plain (Gnome) Mint with all drivers and a very easy Mint-update. It will come with Open Office and Firefox installed. My one criticiusm is the VLC should have been bundled for playing Videos but mplayer is OK.

    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-linux-mint-7-flash-drive-creation-windows/

This is a tutorial to make a persistent USB and you can save files to it including any updates, web browser history etc.

If it is a bit slow then try Crunchbang from the same site.

Doesn't FTA mean "From The Article"?

Are you referring to this bit?

Todt told me in Singapore that he had three or four people in mind and that they were not people directly involved in F1 but rather ex-CEOs of big international companies. This is effectively what Sir Jackie Stewart has been arguing for in recent years.

Unless Schumi has been a CEO of a big international company at some point, then he probably isn't in the running. Why do you think that he will be the commissioner?

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 17:08

Unless Schumi has been a CEO of a big international company at some point, then he probably isn't in the running. Why do you think that he will be the commissioner?

I don't think he wants to be commissioner, I thnk there is still the possibility he will return to driving. I just think that we all have a go a GMM for inaccurate reporting and the "definitely" comment thing just struck me as GMM-esque (sorry Steven)

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 17:12

    @Gavin

Here is a random review of LinuxMint - it does NOT have the nonsence of being pure open source so a flash-player is pre-installed.

I think there is a difference between taking Joe's comments basedon a conversation he had with Todt and a dodgy internet translation of something from a source which has a reputation as bad as GMM's own. Still of you don't think it is definite enough then fair enough

Not to me. Never seen FTA in my life before.

It's used on Fark and other internet forums - this page also says that it is...

What should one use if one is quoting an article then?

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 17:13

The most robust and lightest Linux is something like CrunchBang - but you need to know to mouse click on the screen to get the menus.

Thanks for that. maybe with a couple of days practice i can graduate to right click too

You can run a programme caled wine. However it is far from perfect, spotify for example which actually has a wine support page doesnt even work properly, so goodness knows how a larger game would go!

  • Rich25/10/2009 at 17:37

Thanks Rich - I'll look into it as I like the idea of trying it out first!

The first thing is to work which desktop manager you like best . Mint come with Gnome (a logical menu-driven desktop). There is XFCE which is lighter on resources and KDE which has lots of eye candy. Newer KDE can be buggy (Linux users will jump down my throat on this) older KDE is a little heavy on the RAM (typical 400 KB). XFCE is very plain. CrunchBang uses OpenBox which is highly customisable - so your menu can get to immediately point to various places you store your files and is very light on RAM (150 KB Ram).

I use a Linux called Pardus on my MSI Wind netbook - it uses KDE and looks absolutely gorgeous and is rock solid stable. Very easy to install, but there is no live or USB version as yet (so you have to jump). Its party trick is being able to manage multiple desktops and two monitors (extended desktop) without crashing. As netbooks have small screens this is a huge bonus. Its second party trick is that it uses delta files for updates saving hugely on bandwidth with is horribly expensive in SA.

  • jackie/saltire25/10/2009 at 17:37

Oh right, I'm with you now.

Well, my take is that if he is employing people to read his comments then he should also ask someone to make his headers for him...

I feel absolutely awful when I make something on there and then, once I've shown it off, realised there's a really stupid mistake with attention to detail. If that was me, it'd be going offline instantly until it was fixed. Perfectionism with photoshop has it's flaws but it keeps me sane knowing the outcome is alright I suppose :P

I have only found about 2 programs that Wine works without some fault. So its Dual booting on separate partitions or use Virtualbox.

But when you do it for fun you are allowed to make mistakes - it's all part of learning. Same goes for blogs. Now that James Allen runs a professional website (IMO it's not a blog anymore), then he should make sure that it's 100%...

Just remember Ubuntu is the kernel - you can have KDE on Ubuntu which will look virtually the same as KDE on Arch, KDE on Gentoo, KDE on Slackware, KDE on Fedora, KDE on Suse or KDE on Gentoo. KDE is a very slick desktop environment interfacing the user with the OS. I use KDE and Pardus because it is OS X stable and easier to keep up to date.

I am not a fan of OpenSuse and my admission I never got Arch based KDE to work. KDE Ubuntu is a bit clunky so it is not the best exploitation of the wonderful KDE environment (which is stunningly elegent). To me Sabayon and Pardus (both KDE) are superb, Pardus has the better update manager and smaller memory requirements. They are both based on Gentoo so are very stable. Gentoo itself is impossible to set up unless you are Linux freek.

I have a lab full of CD equipped PCs so I ask our IT support to install software and everytime they bring a DVD to install knowing that official we do not buy PCs with DVD players for labs. I have given up and install everything myself. Games are not great on Linux.

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 18:45

Joe mentioned an interesting French historical site earlier and I have had a poke around it. There is a lot of really good stuff in it but it is in French. One thing they have is a piece on Jim Clark going to Fuji in 1966, Fuji then is very different to now. Clearly the French people don't know about embedding youtube clips so you have to click the links at the bottom of the article to see the vids. The article is in French and the video commentary is in Japanese so it will probably only appeal to obsessives like me.

Apparently Japanese for world champion is worldo champion. Maybe it is not as difficult a language as is reputed.

hehe well while drunk emily is hilarious, you are right more fun was had when the hangover kicked in because at the same time the power disappeared. i did notice just before the power disappeared that the u2 concert last night was surprising ;) :)

Apparently Japanese for world champion is worldo champion. Maybe it is not as difficult a language as is reputed.

I read somewhere once that in Japanese if they don't have a translation of an english word, they say it using Japanese sounds. Can't find a link at the mo...

That kind of thing happens a lot. The Vatican apparently have a whole department who make up Latin words for anything modern. Really good use of their vast funds

“I don’t mind who comes to the team as long as they come in peace and bring peace and want to be productive and move the team forward,” Hamilton told the Daily Mail.

    Also Ron-esque in his statement…

Meaning that he wants a rear-gunner that excepted to surrender any place that he has ahead of LewHam per contract?

Hmmm, if that's stated in the contract, that you must surrender positons to the lead driver, is it a team order?

Sure if you have these sort of devices you are going to struggle with drivers under Linux. Windows is better supported for third party hardware, for gaming and for GIS and Remote Sensing. But if you have a fairly standard or slightly older PC and want to surf the net, are happy to use Open Office etc then Linux is actually simpler. If you have 100 seat lab you can set up your Linux using a persistent USB stick, make a copy of this. When a PC goes down (like after a power-cut) that PC be up and running in 20 mins with all the right drivers etc. There is no ways you can do that with either OS X or Windows even if you have made a mirror of it. I have labs that have Windows Linux and OS X, and for typical office stuff I think Linux can be the best option from a Lab manager. The Windows labs are the bane of my life to keep running, mostly because of the need for vigilence with the AV and general updates.

Just to prove that F1 is not the only sport without a clue. The NFL had a game at Wembley today as a way of bringing American football to the UK. Last year the game was shown live on BBC. Theis year the BBC is showing highlights at the same time as 5 is showing a live game. That is just stupid

They fired the engine horizontally before bt his time it has the capsule(unmanned) on top of it. I think the flight is only about two minutes.

It doesn't look like an Thunderbird. It does remind me slightly of something but that is maybe not suitable for a family friendly site. You can see it at the launch pad here http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/389937main_padshot-lg.jpg

Probably something about being safe and not mugged ;)

It's stupid though. You get even more daylight at night in the summer when it's already got plenty. You need it at this time of year when there's none.

Tbh it doesn't bother me though. I never see the daylight. Damned work. :(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/10/2009 at 22:04

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:04

But they could just wake up when it was daylight. That's the bit that doesn't make sense to me.

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 22:05

    Evening Pat!

    Hey Alex. How's everyone?

I am so tired from a week of moving boxes and possesions and things. Very much worth it though. Even my new bed which wouldn't fit through my entrance hall stairway and had to be taken apart. All worth it.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:05

Hehehe I'd love it if it mystically made the sun shine differently. Maybe it knows it's not BST anymore.

Good thanks. Doing big things and getting them done is good innit?

    It always confused me

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 22:08

Ah I missed a live show. I completely forgot there was one, despite it being mentioned in last week's show.

  • Christine25/10/2009 at 22:08

But they could just wake up when it was daylight. That's the bit that doesn't make sense to me.

As someone who can't wake up at the best of times, I think it's a bit harsh to ask farmers to get up at 3 instead of 4.

It's irrelevant now anyway, as daylight hours are less important in farming these days. They should have scrapped it a long time ago.

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 22:08

Good thanks. Doing big things and getting them done is good innit?

Feeling pretty good right now :-)

Yeah but that's the thing that seems odd to me... All that we are doing by calling the time of day a different time is making it more palatable. It is still the same time of day.

Yeah but that's the thing that seems odd to me... All that we are doing by calling the time of day a different time is making it more palatable. It is still the same time of day.

Exactly. Daylight saving was introduced at the beginning of the last century and should have stayed there in my opinion.

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:13

Maybe so. I have no idea. My dad was a farmer so I shall ask him.

Indeed. So is my Uncle. There was a lot of problems because of shop opening times which are a problem. And pub opening/closing. This is the main problem. Most of society don't need to change but some do. So it seems easier to force everyone to change to the part of society that does need to change. Really in the summer shops should open at 8 and close at 4. But they don't, and that's why we, and almost everywhere in the world has time changes. To make the majority fit to the people who can do nothing about having to change.

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:14

I love that that's the part of the comment you object to!

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:14

It's irrelevant now anyway, as daylight hours are less important in farming these days. They should have scrapped it a long time ago.

One year in th 1970a they didn't change and accident rates went up. It really is a big issue in Scotland because we are further north and there is less daylight in winter

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:15

Hence the very rude suggestion of Tundra Times by that fellow this week.

  • Christine25/10/2009 at 22:15

Really in the summer shops should open at 8 and close at 4. But they don't, and that's why we, and almost everywhere in the world has time changes.

But if just the shops open at 8, I am not going to get up any earlier to go in them?

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:16

One year in th 1970a they didn't change and accident rates went up. It really is a big issue in Scotland because we are further north and there is less daylight in winter

I just tried to search for an article about France refusing to adopt daylight saving a few years ago and I actually found a lot of studies claiming using daylight savings increased accidents.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:16

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:17

Exactly. Daylight savings is making everyone get up at 7 without thinking they are.

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:17

Dear Lou (and other similarly photographic people)

I'm going to go to some testing at Brands with a camera that i've borrowed from the uni that i've never used before and is likely to look flash and confuse me greatly....

Any tips on a) race car photos b) cameras

there should be a button at the top right which takes the photos. Beyond that i cant help

  • Christine25/10/2009 at 22:18

    Later yes. Earlier no.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:18

It's also totally messed up my payroll programme!! You'd think they'd learn to deal with it. It happens twice a year for pity's sake.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:18

I'll leave you alone now. I feel sorry for you that you don't have GP tickets :(

    I dont belive you!!!!

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:18

I just tried to search for an article about France refusing to adopt daylight saving a few years ago and I actually found a lot of studies claiming using daylight savings increased accidents.

I have seen pictures taken in London and Aberdeen at the same time with identical equipment, settings and film and the difference in the amount of light is incredible.

  • Andy Taylor25/10/2009 at 22:18

Thing is though Alex, we now have 24 hour shopping and drinking, so changing the clocks twice a year has no benefit whatsoever.

In 2007 they changed the dates in the US making Daylight Saving start earlier and end later than previousl years in an attempt to save energy. The overall effect was negligble.

If its any concilation, my birthday card that was sent 11 days ago still hasnt arrived :(

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:19

    what model is it?

i have absolutely no idea, i wont find out until i get it, and then it will be too late because i'll be on a bus!

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:19

Exactly. Daylight savings is making everyone get up at 7 without thinking they are.

But winter is GMT which is proper time. It is summer time which is the add on and then it isn't needed

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:19

    I dont belive you!!!!

Have you suddenly grown very fat fingers or do you enjoy just mashing at the keyboard?

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:20

Am very confused now. Scrap it all.

Good :) I don't think we need them these days.

Because people get up and go to bed on their own schedule. But when they were brought in if you had to get up at a different time to everyone else then you couldn't get everything done. But nowadays Mr C gets his best work done at 3 am and hardly anyone bats an eyelid. So time changes seem mad to me.

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 22:20

I wasn't saying Scotland doesn't have less light.... Obviously it does! What's that got to do with it causing accidents or otherwise? You don't magically get more light. It's just distributed differently in the day.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:21

I'd be happier with BST all year round. I think we did that one year in the 1970s

Thing is though Alex, we now have 24 hour shopping and drinking, so changing the clocks twice a year has no benefit whatsoever.

    Right..so far so good...

    1) Take lens cap off

    2) Push button on top to take pictures

Do i have to....you know...point it at what im taking the pictures of? or does it all sort the rest out for me?

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:21

I'd be happier with BST all year round. I think we did that one year in the 1970s

I agree. You'd get more light in the evening and since a lot of us are moving about when it is dark / getting light already in the morning, another hour won't change much..

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:24

The difference is at the time kids go to school

What about coming home?? People are surely more tired by then and more severely affected by it.

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:24

Well I bat an eyelid, but that's only cos I never get to see him!

You nearly saw him last night when he was going to wake you up for the U2 concert

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:24

The difference is at the time kids go to school

Right so my point is simply... I don't understand why these days people who need sunlight cant change the time of day they do things. It is the same thing as changing what time it is for them.

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:25

school could start and hour later, right?

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:25

school could start and hour later, right?

    Everyone would love that!!

  • me25/10/2009 at 22:26

    Everyone would love that!!

it would finish and hour later too.

  • Andy Taylor25/10/2009 at 22:26

What about coming home?? People are surely more tired by then and more severely affected by it.

The 1970s study found that there were more accidents in the morning when we stayed on BST all year round but significantly fewer accidents in the evenings, so overall there was a lower number.

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:26

school could start and hour later, right?

    Exactly.

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:26

    Everyone would love that!!

they'd finish an hour later though, and they'd hate that

  • RG25/10/2009 at 22:26

school could start and hour later, right?

    Mr C for Prime Minister

  • RG25/10/2009 at 22:27

it would finish and hour later too.

Scrap that idea. Vote Other Guy for Prime Minister.

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:27

they'd finish an hour later though, and they'd hate that

But that's what happens now... It is exactly what just happened.

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:27

school could start and hour later, right?

but that would stop people getting to work on time... easier to change it for everyone...

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:27

But that's what happens now... It is exactly what just happened.

most kids are stupid though, they wont realise that

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:28

The 1970s study found that there were more accidents in the morning when we stayed on BST all year round but significantly fewer accidents in the evenings, so overall there was a lower number.

There haven't been a lot of studies. Most of them are about the impact of the changeover though which seems to be very bad times!! We could stay on GMT all year round. There's plenty of light already in the summer.

  • Andy Taylor25/10/2009 at 22:28

oooh thats cool. i really have no idea what im doing. do most cameras have auto settings of some sort?

Yes, but you're less likely to get good result on auto when photographing motor sport.

I went to photograph my friend at a motorcycle track day a few years ago, I let LPG have a go and she took a lot of pictures of empty tarmac.

  • me25/10/2009 at 22:28

but that would stop people getting to work on time... easier to change it for everyone...

it would make more people get to work on time? the school run cause traffic chaos.

  • Christine25/10/2009 at 22:28

but that would stop people getting to work on time... easier to change it for everyone...

...or not change it at all.

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:30

What about coming home?? People are surely more tired by then and more severely affected by it.

    Less of a problem apparently

  • Pat W25/10/2009 at 22:30

it would make more people get to work on time? the school run cause traffic chaos.

It would make everyone without kids get to work on time (or even a bit early), and everyone with kids will be an hour late.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:31

    Less of a problem apparently

So why do we change to BST in order to get more evening light?

  • Alex Andronov25/10/2009 at 22:31

...or not change it at all.

Exactly... For most people it wouldn't matter. You just would notice it being darker or lighter.

A lot of people suggesting being on BST rather than GMT. I propose an alternate which is that as we abolish the time difference we say everyones start time once only moves back an hour. So most would start at 10am. Surely that's even nicer than making 9am more sunny?

  • Steven Roy25/10/2009 at 22:31

Right so my point is simply... I don't understand why these days people who need sunlight cant change the time of day they do things. It is the same thing as changing what time it is for them.

In principle yes but that may mean they have to change the time their children go to school or the times public transport runs etc etc

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:31

...or not change it at all.

But then we wouldnt have new years eve at the proper time...

  • lou25/10/2009 at 22:31

oooh thats cool. i really have no idea what im doing. do most cameras have auto settings of some sort?

yes.... most if not all dslrs (i think) have an autofocus and auto setting mode... which may be useful while you get to grips with what you are doing with the camera etc but most photographers use a manual setting for best effects :)

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:31

It would make everyone without kids get to work on time (or even a bit early), and everyone with kids will be an hour late.

Not true. Schools have breakfast club thingies that often start at 7.30 or 8 so kids can get dropped off whenever.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/10/2009 at 22:31

    @Rich (and others)

So I have made a USB-Flashdrive version of Linux from the page linked earlier, but I cannot boot from the USB drive (the option doesn't seem to be in the boot menu). Can anybody help me here?

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:33

Not true. Schools have breakfast club thingies that often start at 7.30 or 8 so kids can get dropped off whenever.

You'd be surprised at how few actually do

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:33

    Not all.

I'm talking primary rather than secondary where you'd presume the kids are big enough to look after themselves for an hour before school....

  • Andy Taylor25/10/2009 at 22:33

...or not change it at all.

Exactly. Or we could go back to the old system where the time is based on where the sun is in the sky. 12:00 in London would be 11:50 in Bristol.

  • lou25/10/2009 at 22:33

Yes, but you're less likely to get good result on auto when photographing motor sport.

well depends on how fast your camera is but generally this is true :)

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:33

You'd be surprised at how few actually do

    I don't think I would?

  • lou25/10/2009 at 22:33

oooh. what time would the doohickey be?

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:34

I have had a look at Bruno's 'fast' lap of Abu Dhabi. It still hasn't convinced me

    I think it scares you!

If they had built that in the states everyone would be raving on about how great it is,and how we can have F1 in america now.

I think a lot of people are just saying its a tilke track, its rubbish. If he unvelied suzuka tomorrow I am sure a lot of people would be saying how micky mouse the first section is and how pointless the silly little hairpin after the bridge is!

  • Andy Taylor25/10/2009 at 22:35

5 years since I left primary school, times change.

Though they still go to Grasmere for trips so maybe not. ahhh, fun times.

  • me25/10/2009 at 22:37

They brought it in mainly to ensure all children had access to a sensible breakfast regardless of home situation rather than for working parents' convenience but it is multi purpose.

    It doesn't

If they had built that in the states everyone would be raving on about how great it is,and how we can have F1 in america now.

Maybe but I would still think the track is dull just as I said Indy was dull and boring

I think a lot of people are just saying its a tilke track, its rubbish. If he unvelied suzuka tomorrow I am sure a lot of people would be saying how micky mouse the first section is and how pointless the silly little hairpin after the bridge is!

You can't look at Suzuka and say it is dull. There is a huge variety of corners on that track

  • RG25/10/2009 at 22:39

i went to ingleton in year 5, gooood times

I went to Scarborough in year 5. I don't remember much, but I do remember being stuck in the North Sea while the boat we were in conked out.

    Twice.

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:39

In fact every child might get a free breakfast in Wales? Maybe that never materialised though and tehy where just whining on about it to get elected....

You can't look at Suzuka and say it is dull. There is a huge variety of corners on that track

Isnt there at sepang too though?

  • Jon Waldock25/10/2009 at 22:41

I went to Scarborough in year 5. I don't remember much, but I do remember being stuck in the North Sea while the boat we were in conked out.

well my bus crashed and we had a police escort. mwahaha. that was a fun 11 hours

  • Nick25/10/2009 at 22:41

In fact every child might get a free breakfast in Wales? Maybe that never materialised though and tehy where just whining on about it to get elected....

Madatory eating of welsh rarebit for every child before they go and learn maths in welsh?

  • RG25/10/2009 at 22:42

    From Wikipedia:

"France adopted Paris Mean Time as its standard national time in 1891. It also required clocks inside railway stations and train schedules to be set five minutes late to allow travelers to arrive late without missing their trains, even while clocks on the external walls of railway stations displayed Paris Mean Time.

In 1911, France adopted Paris Mean Time retarded by 9 minutes 21 seconds, that is, it adopted Greenwich Mean Time without mentioning the English term "Greenwich". At the same, slow railway station clocks were eliminated."

How typically French to have the station clocks 5 minutes late!

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 22:45

Can we have another try at being nice? :)

  • Alison25/10/2009 at 23:02

Hmmmm I would go for Brie then some variety of smoked cheese and errrm the probably goats cheese because it helps you make good veggie food. Plus recently I had it on pizza and it was a revelation to me.

the good news is the thing is built with drop.io 2.0 which allows embedding of videos in comments and a better file uploader from doohickey.

Won't be the same with QADBAK, even if the other lot don't make it. Just wish BMW didn't make a rash decision in selling it to the first people with money.
