We spent quite a lot of Saturday finishing off our move, but at least we are done now. All bar the unpacking of the boxes this end. I'll save that for another day though, eh? Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about at the moment:
- Jake has published his latest blog post, and it seems as though there is quite a lot of throwing up in there. Considering this is what I struggled with in the last live stream, what are the chances that Mr C will get me to read bits of this in today's Debrief?
- Although we have seen a lot of the video and images from the new Yas Marina circuit already, F1 Wolf has gathered them together in a handy blog post. If you have yet to peruse the new track or want a reminder of what to look out for next weekend, check it out.
- Norbert Haug has said today that McLaren aren't interested in getting involved with a bidding war for a new driver next year, although they are very open about the fact they are searching for a new driver #sorryamy. He also said that Kimi "is an option, but there are lots of options around." We want something more concrete than that!
Anyway, that's enough chatter to be going on with. We'll be around and about today as we prepare for the Debrief later this afternoon. I'll see you in the comments.
Indeed. We still don't know who will be filling 20 seats next year yet!
#rgvcomputerwar-day4
grrrrr, comp just froze on me while on internet. the stupid thing hates me i tellya
It will be Kimi. He is just using Toyota to bump his price up and McLaren are using Button to knock it back down again
that doesn't make sense to me now, anyone else?
Jake has been busy. He presented the football on BBC2 earlier tonight as well.
I am not up to date on the numbers but there are not many drivers confirmed for next years so there must be close to 20 seats with no confirmed drivers
Indeed, it was more how I worded it that I was worried about. :) I imagine we are going to get a whole load of annoucments in one go.
@steven. only massa, alonso, lewis, kubica have confirmed. so 22?
That is incredible
20, Vettel and Webber ;)
@james. i knew id missed someone out ;)
hehe I have a post on my blog so I'm always checking :)
@james. one of the few non-mob sites my psp actually likes
awesome, i'm keeping this layout then :D
He looked quite awkward doing that, i think he said he is doing the nfl highlights for tomorrow.
Which i guess i will be watching as I cant access skyplayer. grrrr.
heheheh emily is here... and a little bit drunk. anyone got any tips on helping me sober her up?
there is no point trying to sober someone up at this time, join her!
have you seen 'back to the future III'. that may be a little bit excessive, but it works ;-)
my rents are upstairs, that would not be a good idea lol
i like the layout on my comp too. very sleek and simple
Hehe, you have to do it quietly...
But be careful! drunken walking on tiptoes is not a quiet activity!
Throw cold water over her or throw her in a cold bath
but DONT, i repeat DONT drown her.
That is bad!
Poor girl!
I checked my emails to find an email from my Secretary for the M'sport society, he's done lots of work on the website and forms and such. So i spotted him on facebook and told him how awesome everything he'd done was (i use awesome too much when im happy), you know what the response was?
"Are you drunk?"
Thanks mate ;)
me need sleep. i hate early morning matches after the clocks change. gah. lotsa love
but you get an extra hour of sleep, so you can stay up an hour later?
@jon. igets confused easily
night i forgot about the pesky clocks!
I like this one.
Night RG!!!!
Good luck
night RG
That is good advice. You should listen to Jon
Night RG
with no electricity tomorrow she can have a cold bath then.
night alex
This is a public service annoucement to tell you all to get yourselves in todays daily ;) ...although in a matter of seconds it will be 1am, and as lukeh pointed out, in an hour it will be 1am again...scary times.
Bedy byes for me
is it daylight savings day in UK? Now I need to work out my time difference again, boo.
ow. my head.
oh sugar... will the comments update properly? i only get to test this bit twice i year.
She will be sober then anyway
Oooooh yes, it confuses me. It also confuses me how you guys also don't have to change your clocks too. Y'know with the world being flat and all
so.very.confused
we did change them, but it was weeks ago!
It's earlier but now again :(
so the computer clock just jumped to 1am, not the comments... hmmm.
bye jon
we've travelled back in time!!! and as such, i have another hour before i need to go to sleep. i like how this works
the comments look right to me, there was one at 00:59:41 then the next one was 00:00:11
ahh, wordpress fail:
UTC time is 2009-10-25 0:03:16 Local (London) time is 2009-10-25 0:03:16
My computer clock has told me that it will go back at 2am. strange thing
will the comments be mixed up with the ones we made an hour ago?
...what time is now??
*explodes*
thats so much better than being robbed of an hour of sleep like what happened to me. Although that means summer is starting so I can't complain to much, I much prefer the start of summer to the end of it.
depends when you class the clocks as going back
you're having the start of summer?
but its really cold now, and getting colder...oh wait, yeah, thats exactly like british summer
i.might.cry.
amy's right, the comments just jumped back. not a wordpress fail. mr. c. fail.
Everyone should change them all on the same day. It would be hugely confusing but at least it would be so for everyone all at once.
Tecnicaly it is 0:05.
but we put the clocks back wrongly in this country so their is a discepency beteween the time according to GMT and the time acording to the time people for n hour or 2 which is really stupid
there is one good thing in all this....some how, and i have no idea how, the [1 new] has disapeared from my chrome browser! score!
This is correct for Windows systems and also officially.
Australia is hugely confusing, in the winter NSW, VIC and QLD are all on the same time, but at the moment QLD is an hour behind because they don't change their clocks. And WA goes from 2 hours to 3 hours behind because they don't either.
MrC does not fail, he mearly experiments ;)
#mrcfacts
In every other country isn't 2am the official "change them now" time?
redacted.
i think everything worked. and worked so well it confused me.
so... hold on... apple fail?
The time is 1.07am BST. The switch will occur at 2.00am BST, at which point we will be at 1.00am GMT. Dad said earlier this is due to licensing laws.. otherwise pubs due to close at midnight would open an hour longer..
I think itis, but from a mathmatical perspective it is wrong.
go ahead, make my day :D
If your system clock ticked over to 1am a few minutes ago, it is fine. It'll change in 50 mins or so.
whcih 3am are u2 going to play at the old or the new?
nope. comment submitted dates are stored twice, once as UTC/GMT which is used for comment ordering and also, in local time, which is used for display.
i say it like i know what i'm talking about... and was prepared and everything.
i think... 3:30 new time.
Boooo. My poor little iPod is dieing
my clock still says 1am.
hehe at least it is working!
Where are they playing? Find out what weekend they change their clocks, is it before or after us? We may have a temporary difference in timezones.
are they not 24 hour now?
http://www.defendonsfrancorchamps.be/index.php?Sid=signer-petition-circuit-spa-francorchamps
Spa petiton to get things moving again,
It's all in french but is quite self explanitory, "pays" is country and "ville" is number.
Merci!
oh.
can't wait :)
Yeah but the whole DST thing hasn't been updated since then
there's a british flag up top.
I have no idea, we used to be in sync with the US, but they changed their clock change dates a year or so ago so we are all out of kilter
most just have extended hours, there are very few 24 hour ones. they extended them so that pubs can choose their own closing time, so everyone dosent get kicked out onto the streets at the same time.
right.
life is confusing.
you are a very clever man
i have comments that say different.
I thought pays meant table as in 'vin de pays'
and doesnt ville mean town?
oh. really?
well they jsut got my mobile number.
clearly the fact that its now an hour earlier (but really its not) makes no difference to my sleeping habits, me go sleep now! night all
It could be worse... You could be rummaging though cupboards making a huge mess of places you tidied up yesterday to find an infernal windows cd!
I just checked Wiki. The US changes next week. That means for this week only we have a 4hr difference to Eastern, not a 5hr difference.
hahaha, that genuinly amused me!
Odd that the comments timings changed an hour before most of our computer clocks will. I mean it doesn't ultimately matter but it is a bit untidy.
Oh great i have done this before, it really messes up the airport!
Everybody should be forced to know what they are relative to GMT. I know I am GMT+11 at the moment, and I know the uk is going from GMT+1, back to plain old vanilla GMT
#knowyourGMTrelativity
What time does the U2 thing start locally?
it's a new wordpress feature. first time i've seen it happen. last time, i recall there were issues.
8:30pm
They should make everyone use GMT then this wouldnt be a problem!
and everything must be referenced to GMT. What time does U2 start in GMT time?
where is it?
doesn't say.
Its the way it should happen.
It makes sense that the clocks change at the begining of the day, not at an arbitary point in the middle of it as i see it
the rose bowl.
I just use the extra clocks function in vista so when I hover over the time it lets me know the time in the UK as well :D
I think it said the Colosseum, thats in LA*
*new one, non roman
Southampton?
ah southern califonia
7 hours difference?
:D
:D
I checked. 3.30am in the UK.
i really haven;t been paying attention, but from the press release:
U2 have confirmed via video blog that their sold-out concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, this Sunday, 25th October, will be streamed free, in full and live on YouTube. It's the first time a show of this size will be streamed live.
The Rose Bowl show is the penultimate U2 show this year - with more to come in 2010 - and already is set to host the venue's biggest ever audience of over 96,000 fans. The 360° Tour, which has been critically acclaimed and 're-invents rock'n'roll' (Rolling Stone Magazine), will now boast unique access for fans worldwide - as fans in territories yet to be visited by the tour, or not at all, will be able to enjoy the whole show online.
next you're gonna want a stage map on the lclt.
which will feel like 4:30am?
Just before I go, I have completed my first FM3 paintjob. Here's the finished product!
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/851/olsbergsfiesta.jpg
Yes.
Cheating!
I take my shoes and socks off to help me do the math. Lucky I can use my arms and legs as well to make it to 24
shoot!
I still sometimes have to look at my hands to know left from right.
That looks great. I must say i its a bit ING for my tastes, but it looks very proffessional! :D
noone taught me that trick untill i was 16 :(
Thanks Nick. I've already sold one on the Storefront! :D
I wear a watch for that. Of course I still look at my phone to see what time it is. Silly Egyptian rolex!
I am OK except for when I am driving and someone is giving me directions and if they say 'turn left' I have to be sneaky because I totally forget when I'm under pressure :D
Passadena
hehe I actualy only learned to to do it by being a navigator in a car when we did off road organised drives, for a long time i had to think of the car to know which was left and which was right!
you could pretend you are practising your scandanavian flick?
#belikeAri
Isle of white?
you're going to have to explain that?
hehe if you hold up your left hand with your fingers together and your thumb out it makes an L shape so you know its left ;)
wow!
hehe i guess its one of those #secretskills
the things you learn on spc.
I was going to do day 2 epic walk: the beach but the weather isn't that great so I think I shall just do epic walk: the supermarket.
Any suggestions of meals I can make for the next 7 days? I like to have a plan before I go shopping :D
Fajitas!
Are you going to qik all this so we can see the excitment of a trip to an aussie supermarket? :D
Never heard that before. I just learned to tell left from right
I don't plan my shopping never mind yours
My qik-able phone is still lost somewhere between NZ and Aus :(
this evening, we had chicken things, in some kinda sauce, with potato... things.
it was nice, but that's the best i got.
Trans-tasman disaster :(
can you track it at all?
I haven't actually managed to get hold of my mum to ask her if she sent it track-and-trace. Damn her busy social life! She goes out more than I do!
I reckon I can work with that.
You should blatently make a massive pile of stroganoff too ;)
I'd marry it if I could.
Underwhelming, isn't it. I bet you forgot to look.
ooh, it's still 1am?
(i did yes!)
I could get used to 25hr days :-)
hehe.
Hellooooo! I'm just home. I seem to have recovered an hour of my wasted life though....
hey ya. me too!
hey
Well done
Some poor people have to work an extra hour because of this! I feel very sorry for them.
Not so much if they worked one less in March..
If you work rotas that might not happen though....
how unlucky would you have to be?
Pretty unlucky I guess, The radio lady I listened to on the way home was having a right whine about it!
i think i would've phoned in - if you don't want the job, someone else will :)
Evening...
Tbh unemployment isn't too bad around here. There are a lot of basic jobs. Anything above minimum wage is pushing it though....
MrC taking sidepodradio on to the radio waves?
hehe. i can't imagine it can be harder than doing what we're currently doing.
doohickey would freak most of the stations out though.
Good morning :)
:P
it would freak me out.. i can imagine the sort of stuff would be on it..
hehe, you might have to keep that bit secret ;)
I'm not long for this world I don't think. I'm shattered! Feel bad wasting my special hour though.
Also I have problems telling my left from my right.... I have to imagine myself holding a pen then I know which is which :P
You can always use it in the morning
Nooooo then I'll be at work at it'll seem like a waste again!
how much more of the extra hour do you have left? is it untill the top of the hour or an extra hour from when you got home?
Oh my goodness. This is too complicated for this time of night....
too complicated full stop.
Hehehe. At least doohickey worked perfectly fine.
Morning, everyone. :D
hey
Remember when everyone got obsessed with the millennium bug. That was funny.
I guess it's a bit funny that the Mail was one of the papers that began the rumor, and now they'll be one of the first to kill it:
Button turns his back on dream team with Hamilton
Although I want to quote this:
He MUST be drunk, surely. He forgot about Alonso-Hamilton...
it fixes itself. it might be skynet.
Well, if no one prepared for it, there could've been carnage. At least the paranoia made everyone prepare.
what better way to generate content?
ahh, the dailymail are into f1 fan fiction too. nice.
Errr prepare for what?
You know, fix the systems and whatnot. The bunkers were OTT, but most of everything else was fine.
You make an excellent point.
:D
it was a genuine problem. you might've been annoyed if all your money in your bank vanished, or if the phone simply stopped routing calls.
Wasnt it massively exagerated so people could make money ensuring you were 'Y2K complaint'? i seem to remember a lot of those people doing audits, they must have made millions!
Now here's an interesting thought - PF1 may have made a good point for once. Jean Todt should appoint Ari Vatanen as WRC Commissioner. It allows Todt to show he's magnanimous in defeat, he mends up with Vatanen, and it allows a truly respected name in WRC to fix what's become a badly damaged sport.
Microsoft marketed some sort of software to ensure home pcs were millennium proof. I'm not sure about anyone elses but mine just plodded along as before.
A family friend went totally nutty over it. He was convinced civilisation was gonna collapse or something, He started storing up tins of food and drums of petrol in preparation!
As I said, that bit's OTT. Expect the same to happen as we approach December 2012.
i'm sure many people capitalised on the fear. newspapers for certain.
but, i saw and fixed code that would've caused problems. not massive problems i grant ya, but there were issues that needed resolving.
that wasn't a realistic risk.
but i know companies that handed out x3 mobiles to every person working that night. one from each network provider because no-one knew if the phones would simply turn off.
and no-one knew, because even the mobile operators couldn't be 100% sure.
i think it'll be a lesser issue, unless it's a really slow news month.
news outlets are reporting on it now - in November 2009.
Even if it's a good news month, any news of wars or calamities will trigger the discussion again.
*October 2009
Ok working on 2 theories stopping kimi going to Mclaren.
1)they want lewis to be there highest paid driver, they may be unwilling to match lewis's salery for kimi which could be his key demand.
2) (this may be linked) Didnt Ron fall out with Kimi? as a major shareholder he could well be holding the deal up to settle a score or two. perhaps push kimis price down further?
but i thought Ron wasn't involved with the racing team anymore, ergo McLaren became an option again?
Logic would say to m that since they are all GSM based... If one fails, they all fail?
It was pretty obvious when nothing happened in Aus and NZ that it was all a giant storm in a teacup to me.
not sure how you conclude that?
He isnt, but i am sure the board would have to approve huge salerys like the drivers.
because nothing happened, it was all bunkem?
true.
Why would the fault effect one network and not 2 others working on the same system?
If they used CDMA over here, it would make sense to me to use one of those phones...
Not the problem, the idea that the world was going to fall apart. I remember the news channels having 'millenium bug watch' segments, expecting power failiures and traffic chaos, they ran it untill about 6 GMT then gave up as their were no stories.
because different groups of engineers were working for the separate companies and evaluating / fixing bespoke systems.
Its possible, i wouldn't expect them to be all that different though.
If i was making a contingency plans i wouldnt bet on any of them staying up if one of them went down though, CB radios would have been my bet
the people writing the stories simply didn't understand the problem. i'm certain that i didn't think the world would fall apart. but i do know that the problem did exist.
CB radios? I mean walkie talky hand held thigymbobs
what kind of range will you get from those though?
Im sure it did, but people dont get excited by code, and people dont spend money based on things they dont understand, the whole thing got whipped up so badly even governments were going to military alert levels because of it
I dont know how they work over here, i havent seen anyone offering the service, they seem to be limited to the range of the handset which wouldnt be all that usefull
10 miles on a good day if everything is absolutely perfect
could prove problematic getting hold of manchester then :)
Could prove problematic getting across Manchester never mind to it. Bear in mind a really good CB radio before they were legalised and ruined only had 120 channels
was probably for the best the phones kept running :)
Right, found what i was thinking of, Its called Push to talk (PTT)
Works like a walkie talki=y, in local area, but uses a mobile network to have the same functionality even if the other person is in the pub i Manchester ;)
2 problems, noone seems to offer it here, and it still relies on the mobile network!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qQeTP-Rg1c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV0bao7p3IY
and back in 1999?
I am pretty sure i first saw it around then.
It was originaly CDMA based i came across it in 2002-2003, its pree 3g networks though so i asume it was around then?
I was so pleased to be in the first country to see the new century and be the guinea pig for all possible problems :D
I am sure a company I worked for around then looked at phones with a PTT option for calls between the company's mobiles. I think it was 2001/2 ish
wikipedia says 2.5g, which was post '99 wasn't it?
it makes no odds really. the people involved did a brilliant job of making sure nothing caused issues. maybe we needed a couple of failures to convince the masses, i've no idea.
Its normally common practice...
After all... the ratcatcher who kills all the rats is out of a job...
but rats don't have an explicit cut-off point, before they never return. once things were proven to work, everyone was out of a job.
no-one's fixing millennium bugs in 2009 are they?
ps. you're far to cynical for your own good ;)
my issue right now is that I have lost all motivation to leave the house and suddenly buying groceries online and having them delivered tomorrow really appeals.
Someone defiantly missed a trick there ;)
It could still strike :(
Have groceries delivered and go for a fun walk instead
it could, but so could any software bug and the chances are minimal.
all the walks I like doing in Melbourne require a tram ride to get there first and that is why I can't be bothered :D
hehe, i remember hearing a story about when they first introduced Japanese cars to the states which were far more reliable than thoise on the market. The american car makers were stunned at how stupid the japanese were, they thought they were making a huge error as they wouldn't be able to make money selling spare parts if the cars didnt break down...
Then don't go out then. Stay in and watch U2
I think I might. I haven't grocery shopped online since 2005, I'm quite excited.
I worked in th Ukraine a few months after the end of Soviet communism. The local sports store double as the car parts store. There was one type of oil filter, one type of air filter, one type of spark plug etc. Who would have thought communism would sort out the problems of minimising the number of lines businesses had to carry and therefore maximising profit?
So who's website are you shopping on?
Woolworths because their delivery was $4 cheaper than Coles for tomorrow night :D
hehe we can help make selections :P
sidepodshopping!
Woolworths doesn't exist here any more.
any suggestions from http://www.homeshop.com.au greatly appreciated. If you need to put in a postcode to browse, please select 3051 :D
booo no we cant!
Why would they make you log in to see what they sell?
Is it a big secret?
if you just put in the postcode you can browse, you don't have to register.
phew i am in!
I cant read whats in front of me! (stoopid)
Apple tried to claim that the new logo down here was too much like their own and tried to stop them getting the trademark accepted. I don't see a simlarity.
#blamelinux
Just put in the post code and pick a suburb
blimey. that doesn't say "pick n' mix" to me.
not this time... my searching for a windows CD seems to have made it behave a bit better. but still i will be angry again when i cant watch sky tomorrow :(
boo. sky uses silverlight?
#sidepodshopping Essential
Arnotts Shapes Pizza 200g
Yes. and a special version which will only work on PC's
I have ended my subscription with them, but it runs till the end of the month
ooh I haven't had shapes for years!
Who would have thought you could get oysters in Woolworths. It's a bit different to the Woolies we had
hehe... now you have to!
Some more essentials:
Arnotts Tim Tam Choc Double Coated 200g
James Boags Premium Lager 6X375ml
- microsoft went out of their way to make a cross-platform runtime that works identically on windows and mac's.
- sky implemented a streaming system based on silverlight
- ...and then restricted it to pc's???
I don't like tim tams. I can't say that too loud or I might get kicked out of the country.
Its the work of an absoloute genius!
not even the double chocolate ones?
maybe its like the online service my company offers, we only offer it to pcs because we cant get the DRM right on macs.
Our website says "Unfortunately, at this stage, the Apple OSX operating system does not support Microsoft’s Silverlight Implementation of DRM, which is what we use to secure content"
I find them too sweet :(
that's like signing leob to your team and then getting him to drive the truck, not the car.
ahh. so when microsoft says "identical"...
Its probably the same brains trust involved, but this is just for the live player, it completly seperatre from all the on demand stuff
Maybe it is like identical twins. They are identical except one is right-handed and the other is left-handed
#sidepodshopping
I have no idea if this is any good, but bad horseradish is better than no horseradish Masterfoods Horseradish Cream 175g
Australian Fresh Juice Apple and Mango 100% 2L
IS also yummy
right, now that I'm not getting groceries today I have nothing to eat so I'm going to go up the road and get a burger. Bye :D
So not going shopping is just an excuse to pig out on burgers?
well to be honest I thought it was somewhere near tea time but its only 2pm. I've normally only just woken up around now on a weekend, this keeping 'normal hours' thing is ruining my life #timefail
normal hours is a crazy concept
who authorised it anyhow?
have facebook groups had a makeover? this page looks completely different:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=22534566720
Never used facebook so I have no idea
wait a sec...
the u2 thing is tomorrow, isn't it?
I thought I was bad at converting time zones but this beats anyything I have done by 25 hours
it is october 25th right now, in the uk. but it's still october 24th in the states?
:D
Yes. Doing a world wide live streaming would make a lot more sense on a Saturday night and not a Sunday night. Alas common sense has had no part in this schedule
bugger. apologies for getting hopes up :(
No problem.
there appears to be a collective realisation on the youtube comments.
i fear i may not hear the end of this when a certain someone wakes up.
OOPS!
I am sure no-one will tell her. At least you didn't wake her for the concert before discovering you were a day early
could you imagine!
You could delete the last couple of comments and pretend they had half tonight and half tomorrow?
shhhh, you saw nothing.
hehehe
:D
could we all just pretend it was brilliant? pick a favourite song, she'll never know.
Or say it was fabulous and they are doing the same again tomorrow
Seeing Vertigo done like that blew my mind!
I thought Vertigo was the best tonight
:D :D :D
Brilliant wasnt it!
Hang on we are only 15 minutes into the concert and we are picking the best songs. I see a flaw in this plan
Ther has been an hour and 15 minis, they heard about the clocks changing here and started an hour early ;)
pretty scary that we both posted at the same time to the seccond with the same choice as the best song!
It was so much better than anything else they did
you might say, even better than the real thing.
i might go to bed now.
very.slowly.
I am surprised you have not asked for voicemails about the concert
:D
this evening, i have discovered a major flaw with the site. it doesn't forget anything...
hehe night mrc, i shoulod do the same looking at the old time!
night steven
I am heading off too. Moto GP starts in 3 hours. I really want to see Rossi clich the title but after staying up half the night to watch U2 I am not sure that is the best idea
how dare you all be gone when i come back
God! People, just buy an aviator's watch and set the second hour arm to GMT. If you really want to be silly about it, or you're a Newfie, buy an aviator's watch with a completly second face with that one face set to the weird half-hour (Newfie Time) zone and the other is set to GMT.
Now in the summer, if you Brits go into the Royal Observatory in Grenwich, then what time do you use? That's what I want to know.....
Hehe. Good luck! I'm watching the motorcycles now - 125cc just finished.
How did U2 go?
I'm here! ;)
we'll let you know in 24 hours :D
Errr, Run, Gerhard, Run! :P . Amy's out to get you...!
Looking at the U2ube page now.
OOPS. :D
125cc and 250cc races are run in perfectly dry, sunshiny conditions.
Then a storm hits Sepang.
Track soaking wet right now, although the rain has been reduced to a drizzle. It'll probably be a race in changeable conditions, with pitstops to change bikes.
And Steven Roy might miss this? Nuts.
Forgot to tag: #motogp.
Meanwhile, #wrc - Rally GB Sunday starts in an hour.
Morning all.
Wet at Sepang? Surely not!
Well, at the moment, word on the street is that M-B is so keen to get in to Brawn and turn it into a fully branded 'Silver Arrows' team that it is prepared to offload its stake in McLaren to the other shareholders for a nominal sum. Negotiations are ongoing, as they say; the obstacle is the existing engine deal, which is in place until 2011/2012 (I forget which).
This will also be good for McLaren, which is in the absurd situation of not being able to use its star asset, a Mr Lewis Hamilton, to promote its new road car in any way, shape or form.
Other thing I heard was that Kimi's severance was paid by Santander and that he may even end up taking a sabbatical. His management's attempts to play McLaren and Toyota off against one another aren't cutting much ice, man.
:D
WOW. So you mean the partnership may be done before next season even begins? That's huge.
But let's say the partnership is done before next year. Would it be possible that McLaren agree to being a B-type-team in 2010, while they prepare for a McLaren-engined McLaren in 2011?
Haaang on. So he really left Ferrari without a sure seat?! That's nuts. And we all know what happened the last time a Finn went on sabbatical...
Mind you, if that happens, I think he'll come back to racing - just not back to F1; he'll be in rally instead.
So who'd end up in the 2nd McLaren seat, then? I suspect it could be Heidfeld... Or we could see a twist and end up with Sutil at Woking.
nooooooo. I do not like the sound of that one bit.
Morning...
A lot of people don't like the sound of that, TBH.
Hmmm. Adie and Amy show up at the same time.
I'm suspicious. :P
I will blame everyone except Whitmarsh because we have an affinity
I am not a pineapple.
Can you see him upping and leaving for a year though? He's always been his own man has Kimi, I think we'll see him in the WRC to he honest...
pineapple is sleeping next to me at the moment...
Right, MotoGP done. I won't spoil the results, but I will say two things:
Rain and chickens. :D
Moving on to WRC now. ;)
My thoughts exactly. I don't think he cares too much for F1 anymore, TBH. This saga won't help any.
awww, how sweet! :D
Right there's a bacon roll with my name on it! Offski for now!
Yeah I mean if he cared he would have tried much harder this second part of the season (maybe even fought his way back into the points after someone set him on fire or something like that) *mumbles and mutters*
driving with petrol in your eyes is a classic sign of no motivation.
it's a shame, all those hard work Ferrari putting into developing the car in those last weeks going to waste.
Well, he does it because he can. He has the ability. he sure does it when he wants to. It's the motivation I'm unsure of.
*if and when he wants to
Jenson's first mag cover since winning the title?

Stranger things have happened. But this is just paddock gossip anyway; it may be wrong, and even if it's right, these things are a moveable feast so it may not happen. Wheels within wheels and all that.
True. But the realization that it may actually end this early (even if it doesn't actually happen) is shocking in and of itself. I mean, had Brawn not made it, the story may be different.
I don't see Lou being happy if Brawn becomes "Team Mercedes"
Morning all!
Good morning
Hey world, forgot I changed my mobile alarm, so was awake at 7:15. Went back to sleep. Stupid me.
Stoopid Daylight Savings Time. Causes no end of troubles.
At least it wasn't on a race weekend!
My friend fourstar told his daughter that all the clocks had gone back and she said, "But where do they live?"
Though I either have a match in twenty minutes or in 1 hour and twenty minutes.
And I suppose I best check if it is now. See yas a 1.
the yoghurt I am eating kind of tastes like it has petrol in it yet I am still eating it. Affinity with Kimi right there.
not quite on the same level as Ted-Mr C, but it'll do. ;)
my one with Whitmarsh isn't quite there either, but if he keeps praising Finns it soon will be.
Has this been brought up?
Jake's Brazil blog
G'morning.
yay jakey!
What we want is to hear Kimi has a drive with Macca next year... if not my F1 travels will be seriously curtailed...
Purrrlease say it isn't so...
The sun may be shining outside but suddenly Mr SC has allowed a big dark cloud to drift over....
In the words of the song... if that's true then... "It might as well rain until September".... that's next September!...
It's in the daily post.
Oopsie. Should've read it. :D
From a financial perspective, this is interesting:
CVC reduces F1 debts
Thanks to the recession, ironically.
Morning all.
Morning
Looks like Lewis is already placing his status as a team leader for 2010
"I don't mind who comes to the team as long as they come in peace and bring peace and want to be productive and move the team forward," Hamilton told the Daily Mail.
Also Ron-esque in his statement... ;)
Hehehehe!
Come in peace... Shoot to kill, shoot to kill.
Lewham phone home?
So big news everybody. I am having to wear new trousers today!!! And they aren't the normal colour!
This has occurred because I spilt some chard on my trousers last night, and then to top it off I spilt some red wine.
:o
Is anybody else following the final few stages of this year's World Rally Championship?
It looks like Sebastian Loeb will win his 6th drivers title by a point or two by winning Rally GB. Hirvonen looked like he might catch Loeb but on Stage 15 of 16, he lost a minute and a bit. I don't know why yet.
Pictures?
Christine, have left you a voicemail regarding Todt vs Ari :)
Oooooh, brillo!
Is Seb in a no. 22 car and set to finish 5th? If so, he has a good chance
HaHa. No, he has been in Car 1 for many years in a row now and he is about to 'win in style'
Miko Hirvonen had the bonnet fly up in the last stage and that has cost him the rally unless Loeb fails to finish. It's pretty much decided now.
I've always suspected that Lewis only goes forward because he can't find reverse.
Hey guys,
What time will the show be tonight?
:)
It's life Jim, but not as we know it.
For some reason the drop was really slow then...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-316
On the right Normal trousers
middle my leg inside new slightly corded sage (apparently) made of cotton cashmere apparently - very soft!
Left carpet
Sideways pic...
Oooh, very nice!
they sound like perfect weekend pants.
They are, quite literally, my fancy pants!
Yeah quite casual I guess
I have made a small video which explains the devastation wrought on my normal trousers and shows off the new ones a bit more!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img-3360
its the words 'soft' and 'cashmere' that sold me :D
They are from Marks and Spencer... Maybe they have released a soft cashmere Heikki?
wow. whatta gig last night, what do you reckon... lads?
um, interesting - I noted the "who comes" which suggests some one is leaving. Given Jarno's body language following the incident with Adrian he is excluded. I thing Ruben's blah blah blah is not really very peaceful. Since Kimi likes pushing press photographers over this is not a very peace-making public relations exercise. Jenson, being world champion would expect some privileged, the last time McLaren explored the option of hiring the World Champion it was hardly peaceful. We are left with three-and-a-half Germans. Rumour has it that Nico is off to Brawn. Toyota have not mentioned Timo but have now mentioned that Jarno could be considered suggesting Timo has a drive elsewhere (no guessing where that is) so obviously Lewis wants Nick or Adrian as his team-mate. Good choice.
eh? What gig?
The last stage in this years World Rally Championship is underway. You can listen to World Rally Radio at www.wrc.com and look at live timing as well. I have requested a shoutout
Hahaha!
*points and laughs*
Stooooopid.
Did you stay up to watch it after?
rats.
i hadn't noticed that!
:D
So what happened?
I'm about to head off to the Natural History Museum for the afternoon. I wonder if they have any Pandas there?
It's half term... this is going to be "interesting"
thus far... nothing.
Hahahaha!
Whatta taunt. That's gotta hurt.
What gig was this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8315693.stm
Maybe it was because you didn't have Christine kidnapped in the car with you?
Sebastian Loeb has just this minute won it!!!!!!!!
Um, yay?
Big surprise, considering the others are all rubbish and he only 'gains' two points for a win...
That man is a wasted talent in WRC.
Thanks Alex. Did it happen or not then?
you should probably read back through today's comments...
that would've gone down well :)
Not really sure what's happened... here's the page: http://www.youtube.com/u2#p/u
Ahhhh... hahaha...
#sorrymrc
wait a sec…
the u2 thing is tomorrow, isn’t it?
I just spat my drink out in laughter
I'm sorry :(
Booo, quote fail
It was Brilliant, still cant believe how good Vertigo was.
Unfortunately the guys at Youtube got a bit carried away and forgot to record the stream, so they have agreed to repeat the whole thing tonight! :D
:D
Sunday, Bloody Sunday?
true story.
(probably)
Miko Hirvonen has finished second by less than 1 second in Wales Rally GB and second in the World Drivers Championship
Could someone please tell me what time the debrief is today?
Steven Roy and I agreed straight away... you cant make this stuff up!
So Loeb's hit 'em for 6 then :D
Did your clocks move too?
7pm our time.
One of the smartest men in Australia runs my ISP, is driving a Tesla Roadster in an eco challenge, and has a blog now:
http://blog.internode.on.net/
Cheers :)
They did. Stupid extra hour was spent changing all my damn clocks!
hehe luckily most of mine adjust themselves!
Ross wants to have his drivers sorted within 2 weeks of the seasons end
99% sure it will be jenson
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8324643.stm
My Netbook was on Mr.C. time because last night I discovered it had changed the time because it thought it was the 25th already :D
Given what was said earlier about Kimi possibly taking a sabbatical.
We know that Kimi was being paid £25million per year. We also know Ferrari have signed a five-year £175m agreement to get Fernando. Could it be Fernando at £25million per year for 5 years and £25million as severance pay for Kimi providing he does not drive for another team?
Katherine adjusted both mine and her iPhones last night unbenownst to me. But they adjust automatically. This didn't cause them to to change twice but instead they went to the right time but for some reason said it was Monday!
hehe, my kitchen and bedside clocks are radio controlled so they moved themselves, we went to have a look to see if the hands were going round like crazy at 2am, but it didnt do it at the precise moment unfortunatly
i was impressed the itouch did the same.
sounds feasible.
The team appears to have offered Jenson £8m a year. That is not exactly a poor salary - if I remember correctly DeSeb gets only about £1m a year. Jenson and his management are being a little greedy rather than Brawn.
What do think Jenson considers is 'a world champions contract'?
Most of the articles I have read have said he was on £8million a year before, that went down to £3 million this year, Jenson wants to go up to £8million again but brawn wont go that far
Media|Future|Omnnomnomnomnomnomnomnom
http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/10/21/microsoft.promos.win.7.with.bk.deal/?lotsofmeat
He should go with £3m in my opinion, add on all the sponserhip deals he will get as a result of being world champion, and he is sitting pretty.
Holy...........
I have read Jenson wants £10million which was what his "total" package was when he was with Honda (and making him the then third most expensive driver).
How much per year is Lewis getting?
Oh my god!
I suspect Jenson will end up with 8M basic salary + a certain amount as reward for 2009 championship + generous bonuses for wins.
Just a quick clue towards my next FM3 design:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_d1yewYtBxw0/RyFFJn03NcI/AAAAAAAAA-M/4r3dMfxfkvg/s320/Texaco.gif
;)
Especially if the team becomes officially Mercedes - the number one on the car is worth a lot.
compared to kimi's £20m+
Yup. That's worth its weight in gold for Jenson, I'm sure. The Honda takeover was probably the reason Jenson wiggled out of a Williams deal for 2006.
BrawnGP and Ferrari are different teams though. I don't think any of them should paid anything in that region, but at the end of the day Ferrari and McLaren will offer large contracts to get the drivers they want.
There is a video on CNN.
unfortunatly their new site is pretty useless so you cant link directly to videos, its in the tech section http://edition.cnn.com/video/#
true. but £8m doesn't sound like much to me, from a manufacturer backed team.
Lewis's salary has been rumoured to rise to $17m as part of the new deal. An extra $6m will be added to that if he secures McLaren's first title in almost a decade.
http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/5919/
the Merc money doesn't seem to be available to Brawn just yet, which may be why drivers salaries are limited. but I suspect the Merc money may come through in the bonuses for each win.
but Brawn aren't backed by a manufacturer, they are an independent team. The Mercedes deal hasn't been confirmed yet.
Ferrari are not paying - their sponsor is so it is rather academic to the team. Unless Brawn gets Mercedes as a full sponsor he does not have a fairy Godfather like Santander so it directly impacts on the team and who else it employs.
I wonder if Jenson is still going to get those Honda planes for his business in 2012
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/23/jenson-button-to-take-delivery-of-first-two-hondajets/
he paid for them didn't he?
If musicians can take a chunk of everyone that itsens to their music, regardless of wheter they listen to it or not, shouldnt f1 drivers take a chunk of the revenues of whoever is exposed to them racing//i.e. doing marketing and entertaining people?
i'm sure jenson's manager won't fall for that :)
eh?
driver saleries for last year:
i can't believe they actually pay sutil money...
Vettel is an absolute bargain.
last year he was ;)
Hehe i meant enjoy it.
here was a thing on the news the otherday saying how businesses had to pay roylaties if they wanted to play music. One of the customers said he didnt think that was right as he didnt like a lot of the songs and didnt think they should be getting royalties for music he didnt like.
I thought that was a really good point. Completely un policeable, but really good
Thanks so Jenson wants the same salary as Lewis gets (without the bonus attached to constructor title). Lewis then needs to have a driver who scores lots of points (but not more than himself). Still seems Nick is the best option.
Just done a run to the shops for the staple of any girl going into decline.... chocolate....
At this rate by the time I find out whether or not Macca have done the decent thing and proposed I'll need a whole new wardrobe....
Maybe but the drivers salaries for last year seem to say otherwise about Lewis.
Source?
you really want Kimi to Go to McLaren to be with Lewis as well, don't you? :P
I typed in "f1 driver salaries" into google ;)
ooooh.
well, they can just turn the music off?
in terms of relations to sports people, doesn't that beckham get exactly what you're suggesting?
I cannot believe they paid DC 8.5 million!!! and PK 2.0 million
He still is - but he also does not have a manager which might explain his salary.
Actually my first choice would be to get Kimi back with Adrian Newey at Red Bull but, as that's not a runner, Macca will do OK, especially with the discerning Mr Whitmarsh's comments in F1 mag....
And I'd support him at Toyota, or Williams, or Toro Rosso, or WRC if that's where he goes....
PS Who is Lewis?....
What happens if Lewis destroys Kimi? (personally I think this very likely since Kimi is not protected with a number one status in the team)
He does, I dont have a problem with them getting it If thats the value attached to it.
I think the system which puts that value on them is wrong, but still.
My problem with younger footballers is that they know they are going to weathy from such a young age now, they become people I dont paticulary want to watch.
Music and F1 are much harder disciplnes to both enter and succeed at so the people involved in them are generaly more balanced.
Hoever at footballer at 12 years old will probably know if he will become a pro or not. Even if he ends up at a couple of levels from the top he will still be very wealthy
Won't happen if Kimi gets an understeery car...
The engineers still talk about him with great veneration...
Says it all that Lewis has welcomed the idea of just about any other driver on the grid as a team mate....
It is GMM but I don't have the Daily Express ;)
http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=350097&FS=F1
Oops, that was said by Ecclestone apparently.
Thing is, if the car's designed around Lewis (which it probably will be), where does that leave Kimi?
If I type in "f1 driver salaries" I do not get anything similar. My first return is
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/01/whats-an-f1-driver-worth/
Which says
"Nick Heidfeld, ever the pragmatist, is quoted today saying that if drivers are to be asked to take a pay cut, so be it, ” We have to adjust ourselves just like everyone else.” Actually Nick is pretty good value at approximately £2.8 million per season. It’s the £30 odd million Raikkonen gets or the £20 million Alonso scoops up, which give the eye catching numbers. The average, according to Formula Money, is £5.5 million. So what are the drivers worth in the current economic climate?"
and now I have the direct link, I should have looked first. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/135906/Do-we-need-a-British-Grand-Prix-Bernie-No
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/lewishamilton/3287711/Lewis-Hamilton-has-Ayrton-Senna-edge-Formula-One.html
Lewis was not happy about Nico joining. I am afraid the results of the last two seasons suggest that Felipe is better (you pay less and get more).
The car will be designed around Lewis's style not Kimi's.
The team knows what Kimi needs and has never had a problem supplying it before... it was only the engines that stopped him winning in 2005... they'll be better placed than Ferrari to give him a car that suits him...
Oh and as the premium will be on making tyres last for as long as possible on a heavy fuel load you may have spotted who ran longest on the option tyres at Interlagos and who got off them as soon as possible....
Aren't they similar though?
On that basis everyone should be knocking on Timo's door and Toyota could be awesome next year!
Oh I see...
He's a wanna-be Senna rather than his own man?...
Bless...
But the design of the car started a long time ago - before Kimi became an option.
If your talking about Kimi running them the longest then it has something to with the car. The Ferrari is apparently kinder to the tyres.
Which makes them not as quick for qualifying.
Maybe you're being a bit harsh - Jenson said the same about Prost... They just wanna look up to someone. Nothing wrong with that is there?
Only in the right hands...
And actually I think you'll find Lewis prefers understeer too so that'll be fine...
As to Lewis not fancying Nico either I think that's due to the fact that Nico is good at feedback (like Kimi) as he nearly did engineering at Uni and that's why Williams like him...
True...
I am being harsh I think Lewis and Jense are very good...
Apparently although Nick has a good engineering mind (he was accepted at Imperial) it does not always translate to the engineers. he is certainly is still better than Jenson who often has had to be guided by the set-up Rubens uses.
Oh - I thought Lewis liked an oversteering car and Fernando an understeering car.
That's not what I understand...
Quite often in 2007 Lewis's technique was compared to Kimi's..
Alonso like to have a big input going into the corner to unsettle the car .... that's not great when you have understeer...
Good news, the match did kick off at the time I went out. Bad news, we lost, again.
Thinking of doing some blogging till the debrief so I'll be in and out.
Not so sure about the translation as I don't think Patrick would be as keen as he is if that was the case...
As to Rubens and Jense I understand that he was in good company as a certain Mr Schu. did the same...
Actually how many of Michael's WDCs came when Rubens was his assigned wingman?... that'll be 5 out of 7... pretty good Rubens you are the perfect No. 2 ....
Always the bridesmaid... (obviously never caught the bouquet)...
I think a lot of people were guided by how much understeer the 05 and 06 Renault had. That was fun to watch
If Alfonso does like understeer then he and Massa are going to be seriously incompatible...
Massa hates it...
Mr. C, I have some bad news. Sit down before you read the rest of the comment...

Rene Dif (the baldy from Aqua) has been voted off the Danish version of Strictly Come Dancing. He has been in the bottom two for a few weeks and for this week's show, he couldn't be there as he had an Aqua concert to be at. So he pre-recorded his Rumba at last week's show (meaning he had to learn 3 dances in one week, while the others learned two) in front of last week's audience.
Unfortunately he wasn't very good and the judges panned him. Add to that an opinion poll the day before in the paper where Denmark said that they did not agree that he should have been allowed to miss the show, and he had no chance of going through.
Sorry about that - thought you should know :(
Huh, i thought Massa loved understeer, everything i heard last year was thatt the ferrari understeered too much and Kimi couldnt deal with it, but massa loved it?
Foxtel works really well on the iPhone though. Come on Foxtel (and Sky) - work it out!
I am a twit...
Too much chocolate or something...
Just the thought of no Kimi has my brains going to mush...
YOU ARE RIGHT!!...
Kimi and Lewis love OVERSTEER...
Massa and Alfonse love UNDERSTEER....
Phew...
Sooooo... although I had it back to front Lewis is lucky enough to be compatible to Kimi...
I need sleep now. Have a great debrief at 7pm GMT or thereabouts.
I think waht I was trying to say Nico is not Rubens is very very good at car set up on terms of practicality. He who should not be mentioned certainly used Rubens set up.
I am now so confused on the under/oversteer- I always thought Felipe wants more understeer, Kimi more oversteer. So I thought Alonso and Felipe will use similar car set ups, and finally Alsono and Lewis had diametrically opposed set ups.
That was what I thought.
understood. appreciate the warning.
The next time you watch Aqua and wonder why his dancing isn't up to scratch, now you know. ;)
What do we think so far?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/texaco-focus-rs-jpg
Looking good
Alonso just throws the car in and sorts it all out mid corner.
Looks good, are you going to put the texaco logo thing on there?
Big one on the Bonnet?
Yup, that's a WIP shot. The Texaco text and Pirelli logo I made myself, and now just about to make the Texaco logo. :P
Norbert is saying that Kimi can forget a 25 million euro package from Macca.
http://www.planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5650720,00.html
"Kimi is an option, but there are lots of options around," Haug told Autosport. "One thing is for sure though - guys who are out for money are not the right ones for us - whoever it may be.
"I won't name anyone, but we want to have full commitment from someone who is success-oriented, not someone saying 'I am a big name, pay me a lot of money and I will drive for you.'
"The team has to be convinced that a driver is hungry, motivated, focused, and that his first thought is not to get more money."
Felipe sort of looks the same - he is not a stylish driver.
I would love to see them pluck somone out of a lower formulee.
Bartley would be nice being a kiwi (not fruit)
Christ, not very subtle is he?
Is there a show on the cards today?
Very nice ... I am just old enough to remember seeing a similar hot hatch Ford fly past me that looked like that ;)
Debrief is at 7pm
I'm surprised Heikki ever ticked all those boxes
I think at 7.
Did you get tickets for the merc benz world thing? they have put me on the waiting list...
Brill thanks Lukeh :D
Yes I have been accepted for 4 tickets Nick, they havent arrived yet but I will have another 2 going spare (apart from 1 for you) if anyone wants to tag along
He may as well have said "Not naming names, but the guy is Finnish and his name rhymes with Jimmy" :D
excellent. Appologies if i appear dead on the day, but my flight arrives at 6 that moning!
Oh I wondered if it was a reference to Button who was "linked" to partner Lewis
Button's after more money too though.
Wow, that's dedication. As soon as I have the tickets I'll PM you
I got it!
Heikki! Rhymes with Jimmy! :D
People! Something exciting is about to happen.
Mr C is updating the website, so if commenting goes funky for a few minutes, just bear with us.
Oh my goodness
Love it!
Jimmy Raikkonen!
I am on tent hooks!
ooh funky is cool :D
ooh, can't wait!
...it's all background stuff we won't necessarily see, isn't it? ;)
It might be y'know... just that Kimi is the one accused of being in it for the money, isn't he? I thought Jenson wanted what he is worth?
No, no, you'll be able to see it :)
Mr C says you may not like what you see though!
but not on the doohickey?
Ooooh, I'm determined to stop what I'm doing and start to get all excited.
Mr C, you've got some high expectations here.
There is one driver on the grid that is prepared to drive for less with the recession. Nick said last January should expect to get less salaries along with other other people.
“Therefore we will have to adjust ourselves to it, just like everyone else,”
He also sees keeping jobs for the teams an important aspect on discussing the budget caps for the teams.
“At the moment it is not really an issue, and I hope that there are other ways so that nobody loses their jobs"
Is this not hungry enough for McLaren?
It will not affect the doohickey or the LCLT.
I can't imagine Kimi back at McLaren with the short haircut, normal cap and attending sponsor briefings
New homepage!?
That leaves one thing - homepage!
so do we have to switch to ye olde commenting for now?
Of sorts.
that won't happen EVER...
hi people!
Nope. Continue as you are.
*twiddles thumbs*
ooh the excitement :D
can we have a countdown?
Its just going to be a big 'Coming Soon...' with a few links isn't it...
Curious excitment!
With a logo saying SPCF1, 2011
Change no.1 - We've optimised the video feed, so it has more videos in there before iTunes complains. http://feeds.sidepodcast.com/sidepodcasttv/
Twitter is quite odd.. al the cricketers, comedians and F1 Journos are tweeting about the football!
*I am watching it under protest ;) *
Little bit better than that.
only a little? ;)
My expectations are more varied than Toyota's pace this season.
For now.
Oooh a parade!?
It is a big deal though - some have said that if Liverpool lose, Benitez will get the sack...
Me? I'm watching last night's MOTD because I missed it. The reason? I skyped with my sister and saw my new nephew for the first time ;)
Awww. Afternoon all, by the look of the drop someone is at the Natural History Museum with a lot of other people
That'll be Alex :P
Connecting Norbert's recent comment about McLaren not wanting to pay Kimi's asking price. Here are two other alleged quotes from the McLaren team.
Martin Whitmarsh talking about Nick
"He is the most under rated driver in Formula One,"
and Norbert Haug adding "He brings over ten years of consistently strong performances."
oh and the record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is held by Nick driving a Macca F1 car back in 1999! Here is a clip of that record.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYY-WkPnUbg
"
Wow, my Texaco Focus RS is looking awesome. Not that I'm bragging or anything like that, but I'm properly chuffed with houw it's looking at the moment :P
Change no.2 - There is now a contact form on the About page, so that people like Franck can contact us easily. I like to call it the Franck form.
http://www.sidepodcast.com/about/
wow...
I wonder who pressed for that change?
still the course record at Goodwood. ;)
yes, but in honestly they are not allowed to go for records now due to the risks. I still think Nick is perfect for Macca given recent statements (including Lewis not really wanting either Kimi or Nico), both as a driver and his no-nonsense attitude.
Is that ever since they had that accident where the driver was killed and the marshall was seriously injured?
Thats only because they dont time the fast cars anymore! :P
Change No. 3 (and the most important) - http://www.sidepodcast.com/blog/
This is not the new homepage, but is the stripped down equivalent. It doesn't look at all good right now, because as the message says we're working on performance rather than design.
The seasons and archives tab take you to the playground. The search is awesome, and the Home tab takes you to Ye Olde Sidepodcast. There is a link on the left hand side of Ye Olde Sidepodcast to get to the blog if you need to.
If all goes well, the old page will be replaced by Wednesday.
Oh, and the random subtitles are up there, which is brillo!
The random subtitles! Awesome!
I was about to ask something about the new homepage as well :D sooo which car will make its way into the header?
yea but Nick is still pushing that car hard - love the sound!
on that subject, we're experimenting with caching on the /blog/ page. so the title will likely only update a few times a day.
there is no caching on the search page, so it updates with every refresh. we're basically doing back-to-back comparisons f1 style.
Swish!
Exciting times! :D
Hope i can get on here in Dubai ;)
Not sure, but I did really like the Sidepodcar.
Yeah, I see what you mean by a bit more than coming soon :D Though in due course, I bet its gonna look lurvely.
The foundations are there though which is awesome :)
According to the f1 lecture guy you shoulr really have developed 4 or 5 homepages simulataniuously and used the best one, putting the others in the bin...
It will be sad to see the RB4 dissappear.
I thought that in real life :)
I'm missing all the changes :(
but I did find a panda on the drop.
:)
not a fan of the RB5 then?
as a quick test. do a hard refresh on the hompage and the same on /blog/ they both contain mostly the same info, but one is significantly quicker.
that is where all the works been directed since summer. making things faster.
search may be 10x faster than the old one, and this one searches comments too.
I like how your expressions screams 'Oh Christiiiiiiiiiine...' :D
Oooh!
Tis true. Homepage took a few seconds, 3 or 4, and the blog was literally almost instantaneous.
How about an EJ montage?
So I'm playing online on FM3 with kimster from PF. :D
How are his sources doing? :)
Slogans rotate too.
Oddly enough, I got a 502 Proxy error on one of the refreshes. Must've been a fluke error, I guess.
That was when Nick was a Macca test driver and part of their young driver prog...
And before he was jilted....
the blog is amazingly fast, thats crazy!
we're playing around here. likely we were resetting the cache as you reloaded.
For Kimi, ironically. ;)
For your Kimi, no less...
There would be a wonderfull circular irony if he got the Macca drive...
also. the performance increase ought to reduce the amount we pay mediatemple for CPU usage. so our costs should reduce too.
all this talk of the new sidepodcast homepage is making me want to do web stuff :)
MrC: so many good ideas that if you implement his good ideas, they have good ideas of their own...
As far as Nick Heidfeld is concerned there is an interesting thing about how he performs best when the car isn't good...
But when the car is good he fades away...
Makes him perfect for one of the new teams....
He is still fast - in Brazil he started 18th on the grid and was in 10th and catching Vettel when he pitted around lap 20.
Yes, but 5 cars got KO'd on the first lap carnage...
Not altogether true, sure Robert was better than him last year but that was due to qualifying during the race he was often quicker on average aggregates. Nick was still less down on speed/points to Robert than Kimi was to Felipe all last season. When Nick teamed with Webber he got two seconds and a pole position compared to Mark's none. He is just not pushy the way the other drivers are.
Hey maybe us SPC Forza 3 players should get together online and make a video :D
He'd be a Heikki Mark II... and no-one believes that if he and Kimi had the same price tag that anyone would go for Nick....
Sure but it still means he passed drivers and was behind Vettel and putting faster times in than the Red Bull driver! Everyone say look at Button and how many cars he overtook at Brazil.
We don't seem to be counting that against Button though, so why should we against Heidi?
I count it agaisnt button, you cant ignore the fact 3 guys in front of him went flying off the track!
No you can't, but he managed to avoid them didn't he? Not everyone was so lucky!
Alonso could have won the race....
Of course yes, but after the saftey car he was 9th rather than 14th!
It was a great achivement to get up to 5th, doing on the track rather than with strategy
True, we do not know the reason Macca selected Kimi over Nick since Nick had outperformed Kimi the previous year when they were team mates. Nick also comprehensively outperformed Felipe when they were team mates. If Nick had got a Macca or Ferrari drive early in his career he "might" be the one everyone wants to hire now. As an Formula 3000 driver he was devastatingly fast, in his first season he was runner up to Montoya!
You thought Kimster was dodgy on PF? I tried passing him countless times at Laguna Seca just now and every time I had a look he blocked me Kept moving across my line every time. Then he came across me when I was just alongside him, he clipped my front end and spun.
Ehehehe. :D Dodgy, indeed.
Then play at his game ... nudge him off the braking zone!
That should be Mark Webber!
oooh he sounds like he uses a technique similar to mine ;)
Punt him off. Drive past and do a ...hand gesture...
I'm not a dirty driver like that. But to be fair, say if someone does start hitting my rear end or trying to have me off, I will do it back if possible, to let them know I'm no pushover!
But no, I try and race as fairly as possible while at the same time giving just the right amount of aggression. :P
I think you'll find that can't be true...
Kimi was only finally overtaken at Valencia when his engine blew....
He also won the DHL most fastest laps prize...
And Nick's difference to Robert only really became less than Kimi's to Massa in the last two races and that was when Kimi gifted Massa a 4 point difference plus played rear gunner and gave away another two points...
But in Touring Car racing you gotta be a little dirty ... Rubbin's Racing, son!
following up from di grassi's tweet:
http://my.renaultf1.com/en/blog/1390-Motoring-in-Motorland.html
But as Kimi had only actually been in 23 car races by the start of 2001...
Nick had done 87 (including 17 in F1) plus a year as test driver for Macca and Prost...
And Kimi ran him close...
They are all testing now!
Remember it was effective team orders that gave Robert BMW's victory - Nick is one of the most difficult drivers to pass due to a very smooth style but was heavy with fuel so had to let Robert pass for the Canadian victory (so that equals the gifting). If you examine Gavin's table of driver consistency during the race the picture is clear Nick is one of the fastest drivers and can overtake. He is similar to Jenson, their style is compromised with the current tyres and needing to be more aggression in qualifying. Both drivers make rather few errors. Next year looking after tyres will be a bigger issue so Nick, Jenson and Timo may gain advantage.
Hello all!
I saw something about something to do with changes to Sidepodland, where am i looking?
Who is the best qualifier?
http://thenorthernwaffler.blogspot.com/2009/10/qualifying-world-championship.html
http://sidepodcast.com/blog
oooh, thats exciting :D
Sure Kimi had less experience but he was not as fast at the time. Macca made a statement that they thought Kimi had more potential to improve to explain their decision. I say that Macca should now give Nick the opportunity to show what he can do. I rate him as highly as Jenson since they have such similar driving styles.
Just like to say, it looks awesome on my psp.
I just switched on my computer and the U2 trailer played in one of the tabs. A reminder of a great gig last night. I am so happy Mr C told me about it that I am going to watch the second show tonight
Just remember Felipe gifted Brazil 2007 to Kimi so he could become world champion. Felipe has more often outperformed Kimi in terms of racing results since they have been team mates.
Last message before I go is a tweet from f1scoop:
No surprises there, then.
Night, everyone.
Oh, he's already been busted, Steven. :P
I have noticed that odds for World Championship for next year have already been produced by Skybet. This does not take into account what car each driver will be in. I was surprised the Red Bull drivers were not higher.
Hamilton, L 5/2
Alonso, F 7/2
Raikkonen, K 11/2
Vettel, S 6/1
Massa, F 7/1
Button, J 9/1
Webber, M 11/1
Rosberg, N 14/1
Barrichello, R 16/1
Kubica, R 20/1
Hulkenburg, N 50/1
Heidfeld, N 80/1
Trulli, J 100/1
Glock, T 100/1
Kovalainen, H 125/1
Buemi, S 250/1
Fisichella, G 250/1
Sutil, A 250/1
Nakajima, K 500/1
Piquet, N 1000/1
It doesn't? Even if they were taken into account, 6/1 sounds about right, considering RBR don't even know what engine they're running next year yet - and it's probably not a Merc.
Button doesnt looka bad bet at 9/1
Should probably tell you how it went with the mother-in-law's computer I mentioned that I said I was fixing yesterday.
The computer is from 2004 and doesn't even have a DVD drive. It's very old and slow, but I did manage to fix it and make it a lot faster with very little effort.
The biggest problem was the TDC security pack, which includes a horrible anti-virus program which is based on Norman Sandbox. It was using most of the CPU just ticking over. So that was removed and replaced with Avast.
I also ran Ccleaner, defraggler, disabled all the default XP visual candy, replaced Adobe reader with Foxit, installled Google Chrome, ran a virus scan (found two viruses), removed printer drivers for a printer they threw out last year, and re-organised the desktop which had nearly a gig's worth of files on it.
It's still slow, but at least it's usable now - I did tell them they should look at a new one though ;)
That is a good point, but they have Kimi as third highest odds and he does not even have a drive. I think if Kimi did join Macca, Lewis will humilimate him, if Felipe can be better while being nominally the second driver what chance has Kimi to beat Lewis who has a car and team virtually designed around him. I am also convinced that Lewis is a vastly faster driver.
Remember the Brawn was rumoured to have had some £500 million invested into its development. Jenson will stay at Brawn - I am convinced and Nico will join him. I know most people will expect Nico to be faster, if this proves so it will be because Jenson is not so good at set-up.
I tried
Who is going to back Piquet even at 1000/1?
Red Bull are desperate to get Merc engines and are therefore going to have to settle for second best or worst because McLaren are not going to let Newey have the engine that can have the tightest packaging on the grid.
I think there will be little between Lewis and Kimi. The McLaren will suit either both of them or neither of them because they have the same driving style.
I've managed to find myself a small one of these public houses to visit. It would appear that this one also sells beer. I am detecting a patern. But I think more investigation may be necessary.
The alternative is to go for a light Linux OS. For Windows users and an old machine an XFCE desktop is probably the best compromise between familiarity and speed.
http://www.internetling.com/2008/10/18/the-5-best-xfce-based-linux-distributions/
I bet they will have few takers considering he will be driving Toyota Tundra in Nascar Trucks next year!
Journeyer, what did you mean earlier on when you commented on the MotoGP with "Rain and Chickens"?
Dude, we are talking about a pair of silver surfers here who rely on me to get everything IT working - I don't think they are anywhere near ready for the jump to Linux ;)
Red Bull and Merc would be a serious contender. They may go Cosworth but I think they should stick to Renault - it has a fairly secrete but significant advanatage over every other engine on the track next year.
It was wet. Very wet. Rossi clinched the championship so his usual fan club appeared on the track with celebratory T shirts and a special helmet. Imagine an F1 driver swapping helmets on the slowing down lap. There would be protests all over the place.
Amongst the bits and pieces th fan club had was a live chicken in on of the T shirts.
This is this thing called beer that I have discovered:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-321
it seems interesting.
I dont know if you can watch it but it is to do with Rossi's celebration http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/motorbikes/8324904.stm
It must be really secret because everyone else thinks the Merc is the best engine
How small!
And beer is eeevil! eeeevill!
I don't think it will catch on
Yeah stupid me - two seconds after I posted it, the chicken turns up!
It is not the easiest thing to get the hang of!
Go for Mint XFCE then - its perfect for Granny and Grandpa. It is utter nonsence that Linux is difficult. I struggle to get Windows installed what with driver compatibility issues. LinuxMint works out of the box!
Next year? As in not this year? Must be something like fuel economy
Trust me - I can't be bothered with all the hassle it will cause them - even if you do say it is easy!
Remember the Merc could be detuned as per FIA. The Renault is the most fuel efficient so what with no refueling you will be carrying less weight - it is a significant amount.
From having it a week i can assure you it is not nonsense, it is troublesome, and at some points i am sure it has been designed so you have to be 'in the know' to achive anything.
That's exactly what everyone else who has tried it has told me. They just want to email, surf and do some accounts on excel. No need to start a revolution, just make sure the damn thing's working ;)
this size: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-322
I must investigate this theory I think.
not to mention the huge compatibility issiues.
I am sure it will get better when Chrome OS comes around, but tat the moment there are just too many things it cant do for me
Its Huuuge!
It should be a long term project, if you need suplies there is a 24/7 offlicence in Waterloo somewhere
I think it's got legs.
it isn't really huge. 8 tables. But I will admit it's not small.
Everrytime I have to try and fix a Windows machine or re-install an OS with it, | am blown away how completely aweful it is and supremely difficult to use. Take Mint you have a machine installed that works with net, has all of unzipping and PDF readers plus an office within 20 minutes. The printer will work staright away. Don't have to worry about an AV.
Yes but on a 2004 Dell there will be some massive conflicts!
I am really surprised, especially if you tried Mint. I do not use Mint (I use Pardus) - but have never had an issue with any of those. Sure you have to use Open Office rather MS Office that is about as big a jump as you have to make. You can also make a USB bootable stick and test before leaping.
If you have to use Chrome or Safari as browser it will be difficult. I use Firefox which comes pre-installed.
I started using chrome but gave up and went to firefox which is less user friendly, but it works. Having said that, spotify rarely works, my iptv doesnt work (admitidly sky/microsofts fault), and for some reason iplayer still sends it all a bit crazy asking for restarts every now and again, And my monitor is doing crazy things
...And i am still blaming it for my typing :P
For a free OS it is good, but there is a lot of learning yoiu have to do too, and it is not the most intuitive of processes to get things working which have problems
Should not be, sure selection of which Linux to go for. Mint XFCE or the plain Mint Gnome are place to start. Older KDE like Mephis also comes with all the drivers. I am working on a Windows PC which I simply cannot download the latest Adobe Flashplayer. I think the AV screwing something up. Wish I knew somewhere other than Adobe to get access the file for installing.
GOOD NEWS IN F1
Joe says Schumacher will definitely not be the F1 commissioner.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/call-the-commissioner/
The most robust and lightest Linux is something like CrunchBang - but you need to know to mouse click on the screen to get the menus.
My feeling is Linux goes from Brilliant to the absolute Aweful in terms of comaptibility. Good flavours are LinuxMint, Crunchbang, Mephis, Pardus, Ubuntu. Bad flavours are anything that are based on Arch, pure Gentoo or Slackware. They are not bad in themselves but you have to play to get them to work.
Sounds good to me...
Which is the easiest to use and the best to download onto a USB stick to try out?
Richard Parry Jones is welsh?
Well he has my support ;)
Although Parry is quite a welsh surname. And Jones is a mega welsh surname too. I saw right through that one
I didn't read that into the story at all
FTA:
Seems quite clear to me ;)
What does FTA mean?
I think the statement that its definitely not MS is misleading, it says he has in mind 3 or 4 CEO's not connected with F1, MS isn't mentioned
:D
Try this site - its is the plain (Gnome) Mint with all drivers and a very easy Mint-update. It will come with Open Office and Firefox installed. My one criticiusm is the VLC should have been bundled for playing Videos but mplayer is OK.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-linux-mint-7-flash-drive-creation-windows/
This is a tutorial to make a persistent USB and you can save files to it including any updates, web browser history etc.
If it is a bit slow then try Crunchbang from the same site.
Neither did I. Joe said exactly that. No interpretation required.
sorry but that's not the same as definitely
It's very, very, very close. Or Todt's a liar. I think I may have found the flaw
Doesn't FTA mean "From The Article"?
Are you referring to this bit?
Unless Schumi has been a CEO of a big international company at some point, then he probably isn't in the running. Why do you think that he will be the commissioner?
I find it interestig that after all the things Max said about Jackie Stewart and how had he pushed to get Todt the two have the same basic idea of the person who should run the sport
Not to me. Never seen FTA in my life before.
Free to air in my book
I don't think he wants to be commissioner, I thnk there is still the possibility he will return to driving. I just think that we all have a go a GMM for inaccurate reporting and the "definitely" comment thing just struck me as GMM-esque (sorry Steven)
@Gavin
Here is a random review of LinuxMint - it does NOT have the nonsence of being pure open source so a flash-player is pre-installed.
http://www.internetling.com/2009/08/10/linux-mint-7-review-screenshot-tour-and-love/
I think there is a difference between taking Joe's comments basedon a conversation he had with Todt and a dodgy internet translation of something from a source which has a reputation as bad as GMM's own. Still of you don't think it is definite enough then fair enough
It's used on Fark and other internet forums - this page also says that it is...
What should one use if one is quoting an article then?
Thanks for that. maybe with a couple of days practice i can graduate to right click too
You make a good point.
Thanks Rich - I'll look into it as I like the idea of trying it out first!
No idea.
fta is fine my book. if anyone asks you can qualify it.
whats wrong with "from the article?" FTA seems as good as LOL if we knew what it meant that is
There is something wrong with my beer: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-323
what do I do now?
Nothing, I'm just lazy :P
Buy a strawberry one?
ask us to select you next tipple?
Remember after all that Joe has actually talked to the guy direct and in person - so will be able to interpret what Todt actually meant with the words... Much better than someone taking the text of an interview and re-hashing it for money from some basement in Adelaide ;)
good thinking!
It appears you have consumed all of said beer's capacity. Allocate some resources into implementing legs, make a pathway towards the distributor and refresh supply of said liquid...
ah apparently I am going. Katherine has just informed me!
Another Linux Question - how do people use it with Windows so that they can play games?
may i submit another of james allen's blog headers to photoshop disasters please?
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/
jenson's car has no rear wing.
You can run a programme caled wine. However it is far from perfect, spotify for example which actually has a wine support page doesnt even work properly, so goodness knows how a larger game would go!
Hehehehehe
hehehe brilliant! Old photo too, no Monster on his lid
What about a split partition? Is that feasible these days?
and he has no arm...
What's with the weird blobs too? Never was keen on those :(
I thingk that would eb the best option.
Booting from a USB stick could also be good.
In fact i have seen it recccomended to do that to acces your online banking for security ease of mind
maybe one of his kids went crazy in MSpaint?
It's so lazily done. I know that sounds quite arrogant but it's staggering how shoddily they are done...
I am going to try this mint thing for a laugh. I still am undecided on whether to buy Windows 7 in January when I get the new computer or stick with XP and spend the money on upgrading the machine...
that's not arrogant. it is the truth.
They're like my headers: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/10/16/first-impressions/
:)
But I like your headers...
My dad has been working on Photoshop since 1991 and he also enjoys these gaffes - but he also says that it's attention to detail that matters ;)
Same!! James' are just rrrrrrrrrubbish.
i think the difference is, you assume james to have a certain level of professionalism about it. seeing as he's sponsored by TAG n'all.
The first thing is to work which desktop manager you like best . Mint come with Gnome (a logical menu-driven desktop). There is XFCE which is lighter on resources and KDE which has lots of eye candy. Newer KDE can be buggy (Linux users will jump down my throat on this) older KDE is a little heavy on the RAM (typical 400 KB). XFCE is very plain. CrunchBang uses OpenBox which is highly customisable - so your menu can get to immediately point to various places you store your files and is very light on RAM (150 KB Ram).
I use a Linux called Pardus on my MSI Wind netbook - it uses KDE and looks absolutely gorgeous and is rock solid stable. Very easy to install, but there is no live or USB version as yet (so you have to jump). Its party trick is being able to manage multiple desktops and two monitors (extended desktop) without crashing. As netbooks have small screens this is a huge bonus. Its second party trick is that it uses delta files for updates saving hugely on bandwidth with is horribly expensive in SA.
You'd think he would get assistance from the photographer who did "the hand gesture video"
Oh right, I'm with you now.
Well, my take is that if he is employing people to read his comments then he should also ask someone to make his headers for him...
I feel absolutely awful when I make something on there and then, once I've shown it off, realised there's a really stupid mistake with attention to detail. If that was me, it'd be going offline instantly until it was fixed. Perfectionism with photoshop has it's flaws but it keeps me sane knowing the outcome is alright I suppose :P
Lukeh,
Get in touch with him and tell him you will do him headers at £200 each
I'm gonna make my own now in fact to show how quickly it can be done with better results
I have only found about 2 programs that Wine works without some fault. So its Dual booting on separate partitions or use Virtualbox.
Yours are better
But when you do it for fun you are allowed to make mistakes - it's all part of learning. Same goes for blogs. Now that James Allen runs a professional website (IMO it's not a blog anymore), then he should make sure that it's 100%...
attempting to fix overtaking? :)
@Gavin - look at this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3ID2CbtnKk
Basically Windows 7 stole the look and feel of KDE. So these Aussies played a joke on people telling them KDE was the new Windows 7.
hehe that looks really cool
not really a fan of this ubuntu thing i have going on at the moment, will have to review what i do when i get back
I think it's been almost 10 years since I used KDE!
there is a kde version of ubuntu (kubuntu)
Fedora has a kde desktop (I've never managed to install it but that is more my fault than fedora's)
Stay away from opensuse.
Cool. I will give it a few days and see if this changes when it is officialy released, but i will be away from my computer for 10 days so who knows what will happen!
Just remember Ubuntu is the kernel - you can have KDE on Ubuntu which will look virtually the same as KDE on Arch, KDE on Gentoo, KDE on Slackware, KDE on Fedora, KDE on Suse or KDE on Gentoo. KDE is a very slick desktop environment interfacing the user with the OS. I use KDE and Pardus because it is OS X stable and easier to keep up to date.
fedora 12 is about to be released too. Sometime early November.
@Rich,
To give you an idea how much help my parents in law need with IT, they bought a PC game for my niece that the guy in the shop said would work - the only problem was that the game was on a DVD and they only have a CD drive in the computer - which they had forgotten about from last year when they tried to use it as a DVD player!
This could be interesting, i need to print out my ticket.
I wonder if it will work!
*holds breath*
Its 'searching'
There we go mr james allen
I love that 'Great Button' pic :D
I am not a fan of OpenSuse and my admission I never got Arch based KDE to work. KDE Ubuntu is a bit clunky so it is not the best exploitation of the wonderful KDE environment (which is stunningly elegent). To me Sabayon and Pardus (both KDE) are superb, Pardus has the better update manager and smaller memory requirements. They are both based on Gentoo so are very stable. Gentoo itself is impossible to set up unless you are Linux freek.
awesome!
I just googled it and got this...
Looks like that printer is not going to work in Linux. Lexmark doesn't support linux very well in fact Lexmark has stopped supporting Linux altogether.
Its a lexmark z735
I have a lab full of CD equipped PCs so I ask our IT support to install software and everytime they bring a DVD to install knowing that official we do not buy PCs with DVD players for labs. I have given up and install everything myself. Games are not great on Linux.
you are cursed.
I have not had much luck with Fedora - the 11 I had simply was unpredictable on my netbook.
Brilliant!
I am investigating a work around ;)
We bought a Lexmark colour laser - it was terrible so was the service it was scrapped within the year.
the only things i ever print out are tickets, once a month or less. This little thing does the job brilliantly (or did!!!)
Second paintjob is finished. Any Texaco Sierra fans here? ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/texaco-focus-2-jpg
Does your airline offer boarding cards per short message to the mobile phone like finnair does?
Ooooh, looks good on track.
awesome stuff!
If you could see how it looks on my TV screen, you'd be fooled into thinking it's a picture of a real car! This game in the flesh just looks in-credible.
I dont think so #blamebassano
Current work around is:
1-Fire up ye olde laptop
2- Prey it works
@gavin
I noticed on USB Pendrive the files to make a Simply Mepis OS. I would try this as well - it is an earlier KDE desktop - but I was impressed with it when I did evaluations.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-simply-mepis-install/
Pray even!
If i cant get on my plane somone will be hunted down though :P
good thing I can only be reached by plane
hehe, I can swim!
oh. *prepares to disappear sometime 2011*
wohoo! we have electricity again! :) gosh life without electricity is a horrible horrible one.
Hey Lou,
Saw your tweet last night - what happened?
best avoid South Africa and the World Cup then!
yay! Just in time for the debrief too :P
Oh yeah, Rich, told my SA brother in law about your dog and he thought it was very funny ;)
what with the electricity? ah stupid electrics company had to fix something or other, strangely my phone signal died too. i was totally cut off. so we went to the cinema :D
See anything good?
YES! we saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. it was brilliant! :) and i actually understood it :) which apparently is good as not many people do when they see it. i had t explain it to Emily afterwards :) fun times :)
Red is either extremely gentle or extremely feisty, even though she is only 7KG she will chew through a door or rip it apart or chicken mesh fence or what ever (that is why she comes to work with me).
Is Emily sober yet?
:P
hahah yes, goodness last night was funny :D she was really quiet drunk. but this morning she was alright until maybe 10am when the hangover kicked in :)
Joe mentioned an interesting French historical site earlier and I have had a poke around it. There is a lot of really good stuff in it but it is in French. One thing they have is a piece on Jim Clark going to Fuji in 1966, Fuji then is very different to now. Clearly the French people don't know about embedding youtube clips so you have to click the links at the bottom of the article to see the vids. The article is in French and the video commentary is in Japanese so it will probably only appeal to obsessives like me.
Apparently Japanese for world champion is worldo champion. Maybe it is not as difficult a language as is reputed.
http://memoiresdestands.hautetfort.com/cinema_television/
I assume you had more fun once the hangover arived. A hangover and a Terry Gilliam film is quite a combination.
hehe well while drunk emily is hilarious, you are right more fun was had when the hangover kicked in because at the same time the power disappeared. i did notice just before the power disappeared that the u2 concert last night was surprising ;) :)
I read somewhere once that in Japanese if they don't have a translation of an english word, they say it using Japanese sounds. Can't find a link at the mo...
It certainly surprised U2
:D
That kind of thing happens a lot. The Vatican apparently have a whole department who make up Latin words for anything modern. Really good use of their vast funds
ye olde laptop may actually be steam powered!
you know I've heard Linux is ideal for running on older machines *runs very very quickly*
Certain types are very good others need modern architecture.
I was thinking of doing that a while ago, but it loked pretty complex with the touch screen/tablet bits
Meaning that he wants a rear-gunner that excepted to surrender any place that he has ahead of LewHam per contract?
Hmmm, if that's stated in the contract, that you must surrender positons to the lead driver, is it a team order?
Jordan, join us for the live show!
I heard that U2 is having a repeat performance, same time tonight........
Ye olde laptop has printed succesfully.
It seems quite pleased with itself so i am turning it off!
phew!
Its got 22 updates to install before it finishes shutting down though!
Sure if you have these sort of devices you are going to struggle with drivers under Linux. Windows is better supported for third party hardware, for gaming and for GIS and Remote Sensing. But if you have a fairly standard or slightly older PC and want to surf the net, are happy to use Open Office etc then Linux is actually simpler. If you have 100 seat lab you can set up your Linux using a persistent USB stick, make a copy of this. When a PC goes down (like after a power-cut) that PC be up and running in 20 mins with all the right drivers etc. There is no ways you can do that with either OS X or Windows even if you have made a mirror of it. I have labs that have Windows Linux and OS X, and for typical office stuff I think Linux can be the best option from a Lab manager. The Windows labs are the bane of my life to keep running, mostly because of the need for vigilence with the AV and general updates.
3,2,1 and you're back in the Daily!
Evening
Montoya is 3rd in the nascar
50 lpas to go on tiny track
Just to prove that F1 is not the only sport without a clue. The NFL had a game at Wembley today as a way of bringing American football to the UK. Last year the game was shown live on BBC. Theis year the BBC is showing highlights at the same time as 5 is showing a live game. That is just stupid
I also really love the daily.
Huzzah for the daily!
I thought we were still in the daily.
I think my brain is losing it.
as do i! :) tis nice a cosy, and such a happy place :)
Zzzzzzzz!
#sidepodspace
Those of you who like rocket launches should remember that some time on Tuesday afternoon UK time NASA are carrying out the first test launch of the shuttle replacement vehicle. They have not set a time yet but it will be between midday and 4pm UK time
It is only a short flight so not much excitement after the launch
Sorting my knee out Think I've made it worse today, so just putting me feet up
Eurgh! Knee problems always make me feel slightly ill.... I'm sorry you've hurt yourself. Football related?
In one. Think I must have landed on it.
Have you guys seen this?
Quote: "Who knows, in a few years time, we may see Jenson Button in a Formula 1 car..."
Hmm, we just might... ;)
Ick! When I was younger my knee cap got misaligned. I think that's what's made me hate knees.
oh how i chuckle every time i see this footage :D
Why has this reminded me to look into Goodwood next year?
I've already placed bets on which famous F1 personality will be
punc*ahem*poked
:P
goodwood is amazing! and i'm totally going next year! well... with my parents playing for Spa hopefully i'll be able to afford Goodwood :)
I have had a look at Bruno's 'fast' lap of Abu Dhabi. It still hasn't convinced me
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/10/video-night-time-high-speed-lap-of-abu-dhabi-and-some-race-data/
Really? Who's winning?
Oooh, interesting. So,
1) Is this the thing that they laid down flat and tested out it's rocket things before?
2) Is it more like Thunderbird 1 or 3?
I want to see someone slimed Mandleson style.
I'm gonna say John Button part 2 :D
Remember me? I'm the one who asked you to have a photo with that screaming girl...
i want you to poke/punch Jenson next please... so i can get a hug and a photo...
'Ah! The infamous Goodwood Punch' :D
i wasn't screaming!
It's true. It was squealing :P
They fired the engine horizontally before bt his time it has the capsule(unmanned) on top of it. I think the flight is only about two minutes.
It doesn't look like an Thunderbird. It does remind me slightly of something but that is maybe not suitable for a family friendly site. You can see it at the launch pad here http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/389937main_padshot-lg.jpg
True. You can't deny that one, we have a voicemail to prove it!
I heard you scream
i'm just excited i got the photo. if i had tickets to the Mercedes event then i would ask you to go punch ant and mr brawn too.. :P
Mr C is trying to persuade me it looks like Thunderbird 3 but I don't believe him :)
Poor Chris... he has been turned into a serial F1 personality puncher
I didn't even punch John Button!
I blame whoever started such an absurd suggestion
well i didn't see anything i was running away at the time.:)
You know, I can't remember who it was..oh, yeah. It was you!
That looks like this http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/389937main_padshot-lg.jpg ? No way
I know! I think just cos it's a bit pointy.
you did?? oh damn :P
I was standing there enjoying the moment :P
Evening everyone... Sorry I missed the show once again... So difficult on a Sunday evening!
Alex :D
It is pointy but it doesn't look advanced enough for Thunderbirds
Hello :)
How come he gets smiles while the rest of us get grumpy?
Evening!
Steven... It takes a lot of practice ;)
Evening Chris :)
Just like you being a doctor?
Absolutely :) Very good!
Evening all. Nice day? I for one am glad to get my hour back off the government, but hate the fact it's going to be dark so early for the next fer months. I wish we could just stick with one time all year round.
I'm always grumpy :P
Giggles!! :)
But in a good way!
Hey Lou!
hey Andy :) lovely day thanks.
Sort of.... I've had a lot of debrief related attention today. Especially the point at which Mr C kept saying my name then getting distracted and saying mmm beer. Hopefully that bit won't make the cut :P
yes! me too.
If it was really important couldn't we just go to work earlier or later for half of the year. Seems mad to change the time zone?
Has he been on the beer again? Tsk. Wouldn't happen with me, except earlier and now ;)
One of my staff came in an hour early today by accident. I feel very generous as I paid her. See I'm nice to some people!!!
Didn't the French decided they just couldn't be bothered changing back a couple of years ago.....
Same here... I've been confused all day and most of the extra hour was spent changing all my clocks!
all i keep hearing is kids need to go to school in daylight.
but i'm not a child, and i wasn't scared of the dark when i was.
with no electricity and my phone adding an hour rather than taking an hour i was so confused!!
So Lou... You have had the most amazing thing happen... Jenson is the world champion baby! Honda / Brawn are the world champion.
What's the next thing for you?
I just like the idea of getting up at 9 to go to school
Doesn't this make it darker at night though when they're walking home??
what? they do?... doesn't make any difference surely? i hardly see daylight as it is....
Evening all.
It was farmers that started it because they didn't like getting up at 4.
Nooo, so they could get more daylight hours.
Evening Pat!
Evening!
Probably something about being safe and not mugged ;)
It's stupid though. You get even more daylight at night in the summer when it's already got plenty. You need it at this time of year when there's none.
Tbh it doesn't bother me though. I never see the daylight. Damned work. :(
How do they get more daylight hours?
But they could just wake up when it was daylight. That's the bit that doesn't make sense to me.
Hey Alex. How's everyone?
I am so tired from a week of moving boxes and possesions and things. Very much worth it though. Even my new bed which wouldn't fit through my entrance hall stairway and had to be taken apart. All worth it.
Hehehe I'd love it if it mystically made the sun shine differently. Maybe it knows it's not BST anymore.
Good thanks. Doing big things and getting them done is good innit?
It always confused me
Ah I missed a live show. I completely forgot there was one, despite it being mentioned in last week's show.
As someone who can't wake up at the best of times, I think it's a bit harsh to ask farmers to get up at 3 instead of 4.
It's irrelevant now anyway, as daylight hours are less important in farming these days. They should have scrapped it a long time ago.
Feeling pretty good right now :-)
Yeah but that's the thing that seems odd to me... All that we are doing by calling the time of day a different time is making it more palatable. It is still the same time of day.
*waves at nick over 'ere*
OOps! Sorry doohicky loaded up on the live thead!
Maybe so. I have no idea. My dad was a farmer so I shall ask him.
ahh. will change. ta.
I say delete the quick comment button ;)
Either that or delete Nick :P
If you do that and the pinger is down how do we start posting on a thread;)
*gasp* ye olde comments
I love that that's the part of the comment you object to!
Exactly. Daylight saving was introduced at the beginning of the last century and should have stayed there in my opinion.
Indeed. So is my Uncle. There was a lot of problems because of shop opening times which are a problem. And pub opening/closing. This is the main problem. Most of society don't need to change but some do. So it seems easier to force everyone to change to the part of society that does need to change. Really in the summer shops should open at 8 and close at 4. But they don't, and that's why we, and almost everywhere in the world has time changes. To make the majority fit to the people who can do nothing about having to change.
:)
One year in th 1970a they didn't change and accident rates went up. It really is a big issue in Scotland because we are further north and there is less daylight in winter
Hence the very rude suggestion of Tundra Times by that fellow this week.
But if just the shops open at 8, I am not going to get up any earlier to go in them?
I just tried to search for an article about France refusing to adopt daylight saving a few years ago and I actually found a lot of studies claiming using daylight savings increased accidents.
:P pfffffffffttttt
Exactly. Daylight savings is making everyone get up at 7 without thinking they are.
Dear Lou (and other similarly photographic people)
I'm going to go to some testing at Brands with a camera that i've borrowed from the uni that i've never used before and is likely to look flash and confuse me greatly....
Any tips on a) race car photos b) cameras
Ta + Sidepodlove + Photography related hugs
Am very confused now. Scrap it all.
I'll leave you alone now. I feel sorry for you that you don't have GP tickets :(
Clearly you haven't been to my local Sainsburys...it closes at 11pm :D i love late night shopping
;)
there should be a button at the top right which takes the photos. Beyond that i cant help
Later yes. Earlier no.
It's also totally messed up my payroll programme!! You'd think they'd learn to deal with it. It happens twice a year for pity's sake.
I dont belive you!!!!
I have seen pictures taken in London and Aberdeen at the same time with identical equipment, settings and film and the difference in the amount of light is incredible.
Thing is though Alex, we now have 24 hour shopping and drinking, so changing the clocks twice a year has no benefit whatsoever.
In 2007 they changed the dates in the US making Daylight Saving start earlier and end later than previousl years in an attempt to save energy. The overall effect was negligble.
what model is it?
Have they not arrived yet?
If its any concilation, my birthday card that was sent 11 days ago still hasnt arrived :(
i have absolutely no idea, i wont find out until i get it, and then it will be too late because i'll be on a bus!
But winter is GMT which is proper time. It is summer time which is the add on and then it isn't needed
Have you suddenly grown very fat fingers or do you enjoy just mashing at the keyboard?
Good :) I don't think we need them these days.
Because people get up and go to bed on their own schedule. But when they were brought in if you had to get up at a different time to everyone else then you couldn't get everything done. But nowadays Mr C gets his best work done at 3 am and hardly anyone bats an eyelid. So time changes seem mad to me.
not everywhere..
Make/model?
Take the lens cap off
utter madness
I wasn't saying Scotland doesn't have less light.... Obviously it does! What's that got to do with it causing accidents or otherwise? You don't magically get more light. It's just distributed differently in the day.
there has been no kind donations by a mysterious stranger unfdortunatly :(
I'd be happier with BST all year round. I think we did that one year in the 1970s
I agree.
:P
Right..so far so good...
1) Take lens cap off
2) Push button on top to take pictures
Do i have to....you know...point it at what im taking the pictures of? or does it all sort the rest out for me?
Absolutely.
ah
boooo :(
Well I bat an eyelid, but that's only cos I never get to see him!
ooooo!!!! *jumps up and down with excitement about camera talk*
a) what camera is it? a dslr i assume?
b) i'm very excited for you
c) what kinda of tips would you like?
d) does this site help at all? - http://www.amateursnapper.com/photography/motorsport-photography
or maybe this one - http://www.digital-photography-tutorial.com/mastering-motorsport-photography/
:)
2 comments later...
!!! hehehe
very, very much agree.
panning is always fun..
that's partly why i get more done ;)
The difference is at the time kids go to school
Well errrm well..... I errrrm. There's not really a defense for that. I just errrm.
You may need to bat an eyelid...
;)
Sometimes you find gold!
I agree. You'd get more light in the evening and since a lot of us are moving about when it is dark / getting light already in the morning, another hour won't change much..
What about coming home?? People are surely more tired by then and more severely affected by it.
You nearly saw him last night when he was going to wake you up for the U2 concert
Right so my point is simply... I don't understand why these days people who need sunlight cant change the time of day they do things. It is the same thing as changing what time it is for them.
oooh thats cool. i really have no idea what im doing. do most cameras have auto settings of some sort?
school could start and hour later, right?
Everyone would love that!!
it would finish and hour later too.
The 1970s study found that there were more accidents in the morning when we stayed on BST all year round but significantly fewer accidents in the evenings, so overall there was a lower number.
Exactly.
they'd finish an hour later though, and they'd hate that
Mr C for Prime Minister
Scrap that idea. Vote Other Guy for Prime Minister.
But that's what happens now... It is exactly what just happened.
but that would stop people getting to work on time... easier to change it for everyone...
most kids are stupid though, they wont realise that
There haven't been a lot of studies. Most of them are about the impact of the changeover though which seems to be very bad times!! We could stay on GMT all year round. There's plenty of light already in the summer.
Yes, but you're less likely to get good result on auto when photographing motor sport.
I went to photograph my friend at a motorcycle track day a few years ago, I let LPG have a go and she took a lot of pictures of empty tarmac.
it would make more people get to work on time? the school run cause traffic chaos.
...or not change it at all.
Less of a problem apparently
It would make everyone without kids get to work on time (or even a bit early), and everyone with kids will be an hour late.
So why do we change to BST in order to get more evening light?
Exactly... For most people it wouldn't matter. You just would notice it being darker or lighter.
A lot of people suggesting being on BST rather than GMT. I propose an alternate which is that as we abolish the time difference we say everyones start time once only moves back an hour. So most would start at 10am. Surely that's even nicer than making 9am more sunny?
In principle yes but that may mean they have to change the time their children go to school or the times public transport runs etc etc
But then we wouldnt have new years eve at the proper time...
yes.... most if not all dslrs (i think) have an autofocus and auto setting mode... which may be useful while you get to grips with what you are doing with the camera etc but most photographers use a manual setting for best effects :)
Not true. Schools have breakfast club thingies that often start at 7.30 or 8 so kids can get dropped off whenever.
@Rich (and others)
So I have made a USB-Flashdrive version of Linux from the page linked earlier, but I cannot boot from the USB drive (the option doesn't seem to be in the boot menu). Can anybody help me here?
Not all.
Thus defeating the idea of starting an hour later?
You'd be surprised at how few actually do
I'm talking primary rather than secondary where you'd presume the kids are big enough to look after themselves for an hour before school....
Exactly. Or we could go back to the old system where the time is based on where the sun is in the sky. 12:00 in London would be 11:50 in Bristol.
well depends on how fast your camera is but generally this is true :)
I don't think I would?
hehe i hope you have a good time (tomorrow?) and get lots of pics to show us btw :)
No. I do mean what you mean. I have friends brothers/sisters who don't have that.
oooh. what time would the doohickey be?
I wrote that before you said Primary!! I got confused because i'd only thought secondary
Maybe it's just my LEA but it's compulsory here. I shall have a look for you.
all times. you thought you had issues yesterday ;) this would be on a whole different scales
alex/andy - debrief replay should now be up.
Rockall time of course :)
ahhhhhhh
Maybe I'm out of touch :D
Rockall time!!
Thanking you ;)
Sorry that was supposed to be...
Thanking you :)
I think it scares you!
If they had built that in the states everyone would be raving on about how great it is,and how we can have F1 in america now.
I think a lot of people are just saying its a tilke track, its rubbish. If he unvelied suzuka tomorrow I am sure a lot of people would be saying how micky mouse the first section is and how pointless the silly little hairpin after the bridge is!
Genuinely scared now because you know I didn't listen in.
dont think so, you're the one most likely to be in touch
fair point.
5 years since I left primary school, times change.
Though they still go to Grasmere for trips so maybe not. ahhh, fun times.
hehe. i just remembered you arrived around the same time as alex. i think jon missed the video too.
petition to replace the timings on the doohicky with sundial readings? :P
They brought it in mainly to ensure all children had access to a sensible breakfast regardless of home situation rather than for working parents' convenience but it is multi purpose.
9 years since i left ;)
i went to ingleton in year 5, gooood times
i diiiid
It doesn't
Maybe but I would still think the track is dull just as I said Indy was dull and boring
You can't look at Suzuka and say it is dull. There is a huge variety of corners on that track
I went to Scarborough in year 5. I don't remember much, but I do remember being stuck in the North Sea while the boat we were in conked out.
Twice.
In fact every child might get a free breakfast in Wales? Maybe that never materialised though and tehy where just whining on about it to get elected....
They all have an Assembly ;)
Isnt there at sepang too though?
well my bus crashed and we had a police escort. mwahaha. that was a fun 11 hours
Madatory eating of welsh rarebit for every child before they go and learn maths in welsh?
haha. I do remember going down some impossibly narrow roads in the Dales with our coach
It is one of the better Tilke tracks
From Wikipedia:
"France adopted Paris Mean Time as its standard national time in 1891. It also required clocks inside railway stations and train schedules to be set five minutes late to allow travelers to arrive late without missing their trains, even while clocks on the external walls of railway stations displayed Paris Mean Time.
In 1911, France adopted Paris Mean Time retarded by 9 minutes 21 seconds, that is, it adopted Greenwich Mean Time without mentioning the English term "Greenwich". At the same, slow railway station clocks were eliminated."
How typically French to have the station clocks 5 minutes late!
Can we have another try at being nice? :)
wha?
I like welsh rarebit, its like cheese on toast!
In fact i am not even sure they are different... are they?
I am not the person to ask about this. Although I do like cheese a lot!
Top 3 cheeses?
Aaaargh. Decisions?? This is a serious issue. I can't get this wrong. It really depends on the situations.
If the world was going to be rid of all cheese but you could save 3...
What would Michel say?
This is what you call nice? I tell you my favourite food and you try and eradicate it....
Would it help if i did mine?
!) Wassabi Cheddar
2) Blue-Brie
3)Gruyère
Hmmmm I would go for Brie then some variety of smoked cheese and errrm the probably goats cheese because it helps you make good veggie food. Plus recently I had it on pizza and it was a revelation to me.
damn. thread fail.
anyone got 5?
http://tictactoe.api.drop.io/play.html?game=fymkubf&key=yf5qepq01s
Ummmm, I clicked on it and suddenly had no idea what on earth was going on.
hmm... that doesn't work at all :(
it's a game built on drop.io, but it's not working for me.
it's working... kinda... it seems to play on it's own...
It cheats
ooo i won a game! :)
me too, you just have to keep clicking, theres no such thing as turns on it
it doesnt go in order
am wondering if it can't cope with more than two people?
I won three in a row then it posted 5 Os before I put a single X in
everyone type your name in and see what happens?
But I can't click more than once.... It's stupid.
hehe
I'm angry. I'm clicking furiously on the square and its not flipping crossing it.
i think, maybe plugging the url in a public location wasn't smart. but christine is asleep :(
the good news is the thing is built with drop.io 2.0 which allows embedding of videos in comments and a better file uploader from doohickey.
hehe *imagines furious RG as nfuriated mouse clicking man
Right, I'm watching Harry Hill on itv player, then I'm off to bed. Night!
I'd also imagine a fairly broken mouse.
night! :)
Niight Chris!
Night

I saw RG pop up as comment in the game
Woo, something worked. I saw a Steven and thought hey, I'm guessing it was you ;)

kidnapped?
mwahahha
Wasn't me
nor me.
Hey, it seems like we weren't playing against each other for once :D
hehe now i think i am missing out!
i can't believe this is keeping us all occupied for so long
Me neither
me?
wasn't me either.
the edge.
Who has all the freakin circles?
I look away for a minute and now I have no idea what on earth is going on
haha i really don't get this game. are we playing against each other?
i'm not touching anything, but i like watching.
Is this a mucic reference?
I'm very confused! I can't play noughts and crosses at the best of times let alone when the other person seems to have run off with the pen....
Has Kindle on desktop software been talked about?
http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/chris-dannen/techwatch/when-will-kindle-become-open
:P
Okay, who just said GMM are reliable?
:D
:D
Yaaay! Did I say something funny. That makes me happy happy
What did you say?
I'm am sad to say it's the truth. I hate strategy games. They make me cry.
There's something very wrong with that Tic Tac Toe thingy!
I'm just gonna sit over here quietly in confusion...
OOPS

hehehehehe
There's gonna be a murder.
:D
Good night!

You need capitals
T ME, T YOU
How far from Yourkshar are you?
am catching up with comments
if i understood japanese i would buy this....
Amy is right this would not please me at all!!!
Do it
I read somewhere that it was alomost called pure racing, which would have become Pure mercedees. i wonder if that is on the cards?
He was on Autosport on Thursday
no, no, no, no,no. they are BrawnGP and will stay Brawn GP they can't change their name i only just got used to it!
what if Jock takes over?
can we call is Jock GP?
Errrm about 100 miles. My bf is a yorkshire boy though. He doesn't sound like that though. I don't think it'd have lasted this long :P
this will never happen.
Just keep calling em that even if they do change name.
Its always Sauber in my heart.
This is a good point!
Where is he now!
No seriously... Where is he! ;)
I am sure peter will be pleased to know ;)
maybe Ross was flying out to Jocks multi-billion dollar mansion to sign the deeds of hte team to him!
Last race this weekend.
:(
Thats not good, i read the preiview quotes, it was quite sad.
Still there is a decent chance BETA wont make it
Excuse me. We don't appreciate you misstating our name. Please use our full and correct title in the future.
Won't be the same with QADBAK, even if the other lot don't make it. Just wish BMW didn't make a rash decision in selling it to the first people with money.
OMG some music man has cut into the first 30 secs of the NFL coverage!
I must complain, this is clearly the end of the world!
:P
don't worry - it'll almost definitely keep the Brawn name. Think BMW Sauber.
