The news we were waiting for yesterday was not as exciting as one might have expected, as it wasn't really a surprise, was it? Nevertheless it has captured the imagination of many:

  • Pat isn't particularly impressed, putting it mildly. Ollie is reserving judgement until we have seen what Mr Todt can come up with. Bootneck is equally not happy about the appointment, whilst Dan takes a look at the challenges that face Jean for his presidency. Don't forget there is a breakout thread full of thoughts about the appointment, and we'd like to hear views.
  • We were all sad at the news that Dank was giving up his Red Bull focused blog, but fear not, he is still writing. This time the Motorsport Musings blog is taking a look at a wider range of subjects, starting with Loeb. Yay for blogging!
  • Finally, a couple of Sidepodupdates. Last night, we posted the long-awaited breakdown of where some of your very kind donations have gone. It was also good to get the latest Aside with Joe show posted, after a lot of hard work and swearing at software by Mr C.

That should keep you occupied for now, but let us know if you are doing anything more exciting we need to know about. As ever, I will see you in the comments.

the problem is when I stayed and mum and dads they had lovely snuggly winter sheets and I've never bothered to buy some over here but now I want some too. And this is possibly the dumbest time of the year to be buying them because I won't need them until next winter now that its lovely and warm again :D

Noooo out of season is the perfect time! Don't get all reactionist and try and buy them after the first cold snap. They'll cost twice as much.

that is true, plus I am going to the new DFO so everything is pretty cheap there anyway.

that name limits them far more than their international counterpart of 'bed bath and beyond' :D

Initially I was thinking bed-bath. In a kind of sponge bath sense. I was a bit disturbed.

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:39

am trying to work out why i'm so happy.

the words todt, schumacher and "in power" together should be making me very depressed, but i'm feeling remarkably chipper about life and about f1.

    anyone else?

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:40

the words todt, schumacher and "in power" together should be making me very depressed, but i'm feeling remarkably chipper about life and about f1.

    anyone else?

i don't feel TOO bad about the state of affairs. chipper might be stretching it a bit, but it's been a good championship in terms of results. :)

  • startledbunny24/10/2009 at 00:41

    anyone else?

the retired german does not inspire me, but i'll give the men a chance to prove me wrong

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:41

    anyone else?

or perhaps you've begun to realize you're a closet Todt fan? :D ehehehehe.

  • Amy24/10/2009 at 00:41

    anyone else?

I am feeling quite chipper too because its the weekend and its sunny and I'm going to Spa in 10 months and even Ferrari staff being in charge of the FIA won't take that away from me :D

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 00:41

the words todt, schumacher and "in power" together should be making me very depressed, but i'm feeling remarkably chipper about life and about f1.

I thought him winning would be depressing but it just isn't. First Max is out and then FOTA is strong and the Concorde Agreement is only for a couple of years. Besides I haven't seen any official announcement of Schumacher yet and I really can't see him in that job. I think he wants to drive again

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 00:42

the retired german does not inspire me, but i'll give the men a chance to prove me wrong

What about him? Sorry I've been asleep or working over life recently. I see Todt won but what about the other man?

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:42

the retired german does not inspire me, but i'll give the men a chance to prove me wrong

me neither. i'm not looking forward to it at all. but i was expecting to feel the overwhelming desire to jump off a cliff

    hey sb, btw.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:43

What about him? Sorry I've been asleep or working over life recently. I see Todt won but what about the other man?

Maurice Hamilton says Todt might appoint him as the first F1 commissioner.

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 00:43

me neither. i'm not looking forward to it at all. but i was expecting to feel the overwhelming desire to jump off a cliff

Tbh he's much easier to ignore in a desk job. At least he's not driving.

  • startledbunny24/10/2009 at 00:43

    hey sb, btw.

    hey

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:43

me neither. i'm not looking forward to it at all. but i was expecting to feel the overwhelming desire to jump off a cliff

maybe because we saw this coming?

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:44

I thought him winning would be depressing but it just isn't. First Max is out and then FOTA is strong and the Concorde Agreement is only for a couple of years.

    agreed on all counts.

    tis v.true.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:45

let's just hope that 2012 negotiations are a LOT less messier than this year's negotiations.

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:48

let's just hope that 2012 negotiations are a LOT less messier than this year's negotiations.

i think it just felt futile. now we have something solid to hang on to, even if it's only for a season or two

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:49

i think it just felt futile. now we have something solid to hang on to, even if it's only for a season or two

the picture of manufacturers will probably be different by then. we have yet to see too how many of the new teams will still be standing by then.

  • Dan Brunell24/10/2009 at 00:51

Hey everyone. I have a few minutes before I need to leave. I am going to a Microsoft 7 Launch / Halloween party tonight. I am going as Woody Allen.

let's just hope that 2012 negotiations are a LOT less messier than this year's negotiations.

My question is, will Bernie still be around. I think the man is genuinely loosing it. I think we forget that the man is 79 years old. How good is he going to be in the negotiating table when he is 82 years old?

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:53

My question is, will Bernie still be around. I think the man is genuinely loosing it. I think we forget that the man is 79 years old. How good is he going to be in the negotiating table when he is 82 years old?

now there's a man without a succession plan.

  • startledbunny24/10/2009 at 00:55

i think his successor got booted out of motorsport for life

Depends on CVC really. They have to sell before their loan is due and if they don't sell to Bernie they could cut him out completely

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:55

now there's a man without a succession plan.

and that sounds like trouble to me. i'm not sure i prefer guys in anonymous suits over Bernie as F1 ringleader.

  • me24/10/2009 at 00:55

i think his successor got booted out of motorsport for life

for the time being, yeah. it's not quite over yet though.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:55

i think his successor got booted out of motorsport for life

    oh yeaaaaah, him.

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 00:56

    oh yeaaaaah, him.

    There's still time.....

  • Dan Brunell24/10/2009 at 00:56

Depends on CVC really. They have to sell before their loan is due and if they don't sell to Bernie they could cut him out completely

That the thing that makes me nervous. With the teams lacking money, CVC or a CVC-type could swoop in.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:57

    There's still time.....

Assuming CVC agree to him taking over, which I seriously doubt.

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 00:57

That the thing that makes me nervous. With the teams lacking money, CVC or a CVC-type could swoop in.

    I think they already did?

Because of the stupid way Max sold the rights it could take 90 years before the sport has control again

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 00:58

Because of the stupid way Max sold the rights it could take 90 years before the sport has control again

90 years too long, if you ask me. And that'll be Max's legacy.

  • Dan Brunell24/10/2009 at 00:59

    I think they already did?

Sorry, in terms of the renegotiation.

Because of the stupid way Max sold the rights it could take 90 years before the sport has control again

It does make a legitimate case for a breakaway threat creeping back in 2012.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 01:01

It does make a legitimate case for a breakaway threat creeping back in 2012.

But to threaten it again, it won't be as effective as last time, especially as it was much more recent.

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 01:01

It does make a legitimate case for a breakaway threat creeping back in 2012.

I think they were insane not breakaway when they had the chance

  • Alianora La Canta24/10/2009 at 01:02

I still want to know why the election was held yesterday, rather than yesterday as claimed throughout the build-up to the election. I now feel completely confused :(

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 01:03

I think they were insane not breakaway when they had the chance

I think, in their heart of hearts, they didn't really want to. Regardless, CVC intervened before they could break away.

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 01:03

I still want to know why the election was held yesterday, rather than yesterday

    Wha?

I never thought you could just meet up with some-one who was into S&M but apparently you can..... They're called Physiotherapists and after today, I'm sorry but they're all Ba****ds and then some.

  • me24/10/2009 at 01:23

    OK, who's fault is it?

    traditionally... steven's.

    hey bootneck. tough day?

  • paul24/10/2009 at 01:24

    I guess so.

Did you sort out the software issues?

  • me24/10/2009 at 01:24

Did you sort out the software issues?

define "sort". i shut the software and i don't have to deal with it until sunday.

but i didn't actually solve anything, no.

  • paul24/10/2009 at 01:26

but i didn't actually solve anything, no.

Hmm Thats annoying. I wonder if 10.6.2 might solve things. That's due shortly I think?

  • Bootneck24/10/2009 at 01:26

Agggghhhhhh and then a bit. does anyone know what your Sacroilliac joint is. Cos that what not right in my body at the mo. and its making my eye's water now an then I can tell ya.

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 01:26

Physio's for your own good though no matter how much it hurts :( It's just trying to give you as much functionality long-term as possible.

  • me24/10/2009 at 01:27

Hmm Thats annoying. I wonder if 10.6.2 might solve things. That's due shortly I think?

it's possible to work around the issues, i'm sure.

i just had a bit of culture shock using such flaky software. like i'd gone back 5 years or something.

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 01:27

Agggghhhhhh and then a bit. does anyone know what your Sacroilliac joint is. Cos that what not right in my body at the mo. and its making my eye's water now an then I can tell ya.

Have you done specific damage to it?

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 01:28

Agggghhhhhh and then a bit. does anyone know what your Sacroilliac joint is.

    Nope

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 01:29

    Nope

    Think base of the spine....

  • paul24/10/2009 at 01:29

it's possible to work around the issues, i'm sure.

    Fair enough.

Was just out looking at the new 27" iMac. It's just lucky I didn't have my credit card with me.

  • Bootneck24/10/2009 at 01:29

When the nice man drove into the back of my car, I had my right foot on the brake and took all the impact up and into my pelvis.

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 01:30

    Think base of the spine....

    Oh

  • Alison24/10/2009 at 01:30

When the nice man drove into the back of my car, I had my right foot on the brake and took all the impact up and into my pelvis.

Ouch. Is it a fracture? What's the physio trying to achieve?

  • startledbunny24/10/2009 at 01:31

When the nice man drove into the back of my car, I had my right foot on the brake and took all the impact up and into my pelvis.

ouch and then some times infinity.

    +10% +2 :)

    Oh

Yeah. Body parts. Finally something I know all about.....

  • Bootneck24/10/2009 at 01:34

Anyway went to Bluewater on Tuesday to see the Jenson Button dude. Not a good idea. place was heaving with idiots who just wanted to be... well idiots.

The police and local security were something like the Keystone cops and it was a shambles really.

    Mind you I still spent £75 on 2 T-shirts and a hat.

Yeah, but I'm working on gas still here, I've tried the live thingumy but it keeps going wonk, so I stick with this side of things. Oh and I dont really do all that IT stuff, I'm just winging this really.

  • Bootneck24/10/2009 at 01:59

Oh yeah and you should'nt bring the great man's name down like that. JS is an icon, in a list of people to do with F1 in my book he's no further down the list than 5th maybe 6th.

    Morning,

    Did you buy some sheets?

  • Amy24/10/2009 at 09:43

    Did you buy some sheets?

I did, they are very child like (ie they have stars on them) but they were $20 down from $45 :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/10/2009 at 09:45

So I've offered to fix my mother-in-law's computer which is older than time itself. I offered to bring round my portable hard drive to back up the data.

Now, she's not too tech-savvy, but she can use the net and she buys stuff online. She suddenly decided this morning that she wants to buy her own disk.

She just called me up and asked if a 1.5TB drive was big enough to back up the data - I almost fell off my chair, because that's at least 6 times larger than her hard disk in the computer :D

Kinda like taking a lorry down to the supermarket to buy your weekly groceries, isn't it? :D

i caught up with overnight comments in less than 60 seconds... did we upset everyone?

I was actually surprised - I thought SPC went down or something. Guess not, then...

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 10:48

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 10:48

  • Amy24/10/2009 at 10:49

    quiet morning in spc-land?

very quiet. After I posted my comment at 4.55am SPC time I got home and read for a few hours, had my dinner, then I slept for a few hours and then I came back and there was still no new comments.

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 10:49

  • Jon Waldock24/10/2009 at 10:49

    america?

i was going for USA, but same difference

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 10:49

    Bernie: 'Arrogant' Brawn

Hmmm. What's Bernie trying to get to here? For an unlikely rumor, everyone seems to be riding on it.

  • me24/10/2009 at 10:49

    What did you do?

dunno. i got quite mad at apple.

  • me24/10/2009 at 10:52

i wonder if button's manager might regret using mclaren to play hardball with brawn... given the mercedes link, i wonder how much info is being passed back and forth.

I was up at 7 and thought... Right all I'm doing is switching this one to this one. Then I realised I didn't have a copy of my ADSL password anywhere I could find. It would appear to have been tidied into oblivion ;)

what is awesome, is that not only was he the first with the news, but you found it almost straight away.

i would guess his reader circulation is smaller than autosport's, but it made no difference. he was first and we all saw it.

I think not. I don't know what happened yesterday, but it's not even Beta yet!

Just buy a 27 inch iMac.

    Do you have ADSL 2+?

What speeds do you see? I've recently upgraded with a linksys (by cisco) am300 modem and time capsule, getting 8mbps down and almost 1mbps uplink

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 11:55

My biggest problem is backup storage... All of Apples storage solutions only seem to go up to 1Tb. My main desktop's local hard disk is currently using 974Gb... Which makes having Apple solve backup for me a bit of an issue :(

I have quite a lot of music and video, but a large part of the problem is Katherine's RAW format photographs.

Sorry 2Tb is what I meant for Time capsule not 1. But if I added up the disk space used on my machines it would easily top that out not to mention keeping time stamped versions.

  • Jeremy24/10/2009 at 12:13

If I had the money I'd wall mount one of those bad boys!

Just one? I told Zoe not 5 minutes ago that we should have two, side by side, and then we can watch seperate things, or the same thing and split it between the two :P

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 12:16

Sorry 2Tb is what I meant for Time capsule not 1. But if I added up the disk space used on my machines it would easily top that out not to mention keeping time stamped versions.

The photos aren't as bad as they could be...

I have 183Gb of Music and iTunes Video

180Gb of video recorded and edited by me

    52Gb of Pictures

61Gb of other stuff in Documents which probably contains some more home video and stuff

    Well that comes to 476Gb

So... good question... How... I will get back to you shortly.

  • Christine24/10/2009 at 12:16

Hook up another 2TB hard disk to the USB port?

  • lou24/10/2009 at 12:47

I've just run Disk Cleanup. It has done a scan... Across all Temp Folders - 406Gb!

    oh my goodness!!

the OS doesn't auto defrag files over 20 MB automatically? Hmmm.

Anyone ever heard of it before? or got any ideas?...

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 14:10

    Is your Airport Extreme broken?

No. Just something to do with the configuration seemed to mean that it often wouldn't give DHCP addresses out correctly. Also because of having the airport between the router and the device it seemed to mean that the router would often give out devices in a haphazard manner. Basically the router would give my laptop an ip address. Then I would close the lid of my laptop. My iphone would connect and would be given the same ip the laptop just had. Then I would open the lid of the laptop and it would say, "ip conflict I was using that ip address".

Basically the Airport Extreme was telling my router that it was using all of these ip addresses, and there didn't seem to be a way of saying to the Extreme "first try and give that device back the last ip address it last used that isn't being used". This is how they normally work.

  • Jeremy24/10/2009 at 14:12

And most of the UK population.

I'm not impressed with having two devices either. It would be nice if we made different versions of everything.

I know nothing about Airport Extreme, but I'm guessing it's a router.

Do they make ADSL standalone modems?

I've never seen 2 routers working together. *mind blown*

If that is the case, then perhaps you need to configure the ADSL router to assign an IP address to the A.E., then set the A.E. to give out IP Addresses to devices from a completely different range,

    Does that make sense?

Have I just lost the point?

Sometimes it is easiest just to make the modem router turn into just a modem and let the airport do all the routing

  • Chris24/10/2009 at 14:29

    afternoon all.

  • Jeremy24/10/2009 at 14:29

it depends what you are calling a router. Most 'modems' are actually modems and routers in one box. You can turn off the NAT and DHCP and they become just modems. then you can use another box that is just a router and it connects and disconnects the PPP connection on the modem.

Yeah that may be the option and it does seem more likely with my new bit of kit that I should be able to do that. I had got annoyed enough with what was going on that I just needed to unplug everything and start again.

I need to do the same. I bought my Linksys modem ($70 - equivalent to 35 pounds!) last week while having physical phone line issues and haven't set everything up properly yet.

I want to sort out the Back to My Mac service which will let me wake machines from sleep over the internet without having to get a fixed IP address

In the latest issue of F1 mag Martin Whitmarsh is asked which of the various drivers he would choose in combination and the choice he is given is Senna, Prost, Hakkinen, Raikkonen, Alonso and Hamilton ....

He says Prost/Senna wasn't a good combo and neither was Alfonso/Hamilton... and he picks Kimi and Mika....

Both have a particular persona, but they were very intelligent drivers, smart, and gave really good engineering feedback...

Suddenly I really, really like Mr Whitmarsh.....

I am also riled by 'hardcore fans'.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 15:45

    this year even.

I was watching a match and decided there was no point avidlly following a bunch of millionaires do nothing for 80 mins, then the games outcome being decided by who could fall over most convincingly and win a penalty.

Not really looked back since then

  • James24/10/2009 at 15:47

#mfc Mozilla introduce Raindrop. (not availble for download yet ;))

Today we’re introducing Raindrop, an exploration in messaging innovation being led by the team responsible for Thunderbird, to explore new ways to use Open Web technologies to create useful, compelling messaging experiences.

We hope to lead and spur the development of extensible applications that help users easily and enjoyably manage their conversations, notifications, and messages across a variety of online services. A central principle behind Raindrop is that messaging should be personal — we want Raindrop to be people-centric both in how we process messages, and in how we can help give people control over their personal data and experiences.

When a friend’s link from YouTube or flickr arrives, your messaging client should be able to show the video or photos near or as part of the message, rather than rudely kicking you over to a separate browser tab. Notifications from computers and mailing lists should be organized for you, not clutter your Inbox or require tedious manual filter setup. It should be easy to smoothly integrate new web services into your conversation viewer entirely using open web technologies.

    http://labs.mozilla.com/raindrop/2009/10/22/introducing-raindrop/

I really dont think Linux is for me, it just seems to be a reall struggle to do anything, and it keeps telling me i have kernal problems. I want a computer not a popcorn machine.

I guess that puts it down to a chocie between the overpriced windows 7 or the £500 mac mini. the only down side to that is the insanely priced apple peripherals.

either way i need to make some money!

    i havent toched it!

you should run an update: system > admin > update manager (click check and then update). This should solve kernel issues since you get a new one (if you hadn't updated since installing)

    I still want to know why the election was held yesterday, rather than yesterday as claimed throughout the build-up to the election. {Comment #76}

It would appear that I was even more confused than I thought. I meant to type "yesterday, rather than today..."

It is entirely possible that the FIA did a typo of its own because with hindsight it would take an act of spectacular stupidity to organise an election concerning a bunch of 9-5 Monday-Friday bureaucrats on a Saturday. I could have sworn, however, that they'd been saying all along that the election would be on October 24, which means the election was done 24 hours earlier than indicated (and could explain the higher-than-usual non-voting rate).

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 16:32

:( Don't know how to help with that. Is it the same when you turn off the visual effects?

#mfc Mozilla introduce Raindrop. (not availble for download yet ;))

sounds nice. will it work with doohickey? ;-)

    9.1

what are the kernal updates usualy called?

The new me. scott in italy has left the country.

saw obama yesterday - not a bad day one in the country

    Love the name

  • Kathi24/10/2009 at 16:46

linux header and a number or sth similar (they are included in your normal updates)

  • guille2306 (back in Bariloche)24/10/2009 at 16:48

    9.1

that's the version. the name of the distribution should be something like ubuntu, fedora, gentoo, etc.

btw, in what machine are you running it? is a desktop or a notebook?

  • Alianora La Canta24/10/2009 at 17:05

    In the latest issue of F1 mag Martin Whitmarsh is asked which of the various drivers he would choose in combination... {Comment #292}

Is this F1 Racing? Because my copy hasn't turned up yet (though New Internationalist and CILIP Magazine both made it before the strike kicked in - I suspect the NI might have posted its issues early on purpose fr strike avoidance reasons)...

    Its a desktop running ubuntu.

I am sure for some people linux is great, but i have found so many little things i cant do because they are not linux compatible.

Online advice is also very hard to follow because it is all written expecting a certain amount of knowledge in the reader. It seems to take a lot of effort to get simple things done which i amused to only being one or 2 clicks in windows.

I dont think it could be called an OS for everyone, from my experience over the last week, you do need quite an advanced knowledge in computing

I will stick with it for now, but might have to seek out a replacement when i come back from dubai

I am sure for some people linux is great, but i have found so many little things i cant do because they are not linux compatible.

it depends on what do you want to do. it's true that certain things work only on windows (games....) but most of the things work in any OS (sometimes it requires to find a proper replacement, like using openoffice instead of MS office)

yeah, 'simple' is OS dependent ;-)

there is online advice for every level, but sometimes it's hard to find it. the good thing is that you can just ask in some beginner forum and somebody will try to lead you all the way (ubuntu has a nice one)

I will stick with it for now, but might have to seek out a replacement when i come back from dubai

you may want to wait 5 days for the 9.10 version. the jumps from one to the next (in terms of user-friendliness and stability/compatibility) are usually very big. if you can format the computer and start with a fresh installation, I would recommend that (maybe the first didn't go well). if not, a normal update should work unless the installation you have now is seriously broken.

Very true. There is an odd thing that happens more and more now which is that simple is dependent on how deep you got into the last OS you had.

So if you never used a computer before and were given a mac I think you may well find it easier to learn it than if you had been a windows user for 10 years. It's just not where I expected it to be is a thing I hear a lot.

The problem is not playing games, and i have no problem using replacements such as open office.

However my web experience is somewhat restricted on Linux, spotify for example only works intemitently, i am yet to get it to play more than 3 songs in a row before it crashes.

Chrome does not work properly with flash and Java so i have to use firefox which is much less user friendly.

Also my IPtv provider is not compatible with Linux. so i have cancelled it (but i was probably going to do that anyway) Its lots of little things as well that i cant reallly put my finger on

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 17:48

I guess that puts it down to a chocie between the overpriced windows 7 or the £500 mac mini. the only down side to that is the insanely priced apple peripherals.

You don't have to buy the Apple keyboard or Mouse to use with the Mac Mini, that's the whole point of it.

I found using a mac much easier to get to grips with than this! Apart from the right clicking! which i am sure they just omitted to annoy windows people!

And historically the reason that it isn't included isn't to annoy windows users. Remember the Mac mouse came first.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 17:52

hehe it was in an office which had very strict rules, i am sure brining your own mouse to work would have caused uproar!

I was speaking to somone about this last night and he was saying he har real problems using a pc keyboard, and that it was effectivly a neccecity?

Shouldn't be - you just have to use the Ctrl/Alt/Windows keys slightly differently. Everything else is pretty much the same. Is it possible to remap the keys too.

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 17:54

Here's a secret... Right clicking works on the mac... If you use a PC mouse

And on the Apple mouse. You just have to switch it on in System Preferences.

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 17:54

hehe it was in an office which had very strict rules, i am sure brining your own mouse to work would have caused uproar!

Even on MacBreak Weekly a very Mac centric show all of the panellists said that they hated Apple's mice and preferred the Microsoft Mouse. (I don't mean a generic PC mouse, specifically Microsoft's one).

    How's the Magic Mouse Andy?

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 17:55

hehe it was in an office which had very strict rules, i am sure brining your own mouse to work would have caused uproar!

Why? I would have thought that using your own mouse would be OK, it's just an input device. What would they have done if you had RSI or another issue that required you to use a specific pointing device?

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 17:57

Why? I would have thought that using your own mouse would be OK, it's just an input device. What would they have done if you had RSI or another issue that required you to use a specific pointing device?

In our office you aren't allowed to connect anything to any computer device that isn't owned by the firm. But the firm would buy you something for RSI etc.

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 17:58

In our office you aren't allowed to connect anything to any computer device that isn't owned by the firm. But the firm would buy you something for RSI etc.

For example even any USB thumb drive needs to be owned by the firm so that it can be encrypted etc.

Magic mouse is pretty good actually, I like the complete lack of buttons on the top.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 17:58

Why? I would have thought that using your own mouse would be OK, it's just an input device. What would they have done if you had RSI or another issue that required you to use a specific pointing device?

I guess you would need a form signed by 4 or 5 people, approval from It to say the device would hurt their precisous system, then an apointment for them to come to your desk and plu it in for you.

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 17:58

That's fair enough, but a mouse?!

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 17:59

That's fair enough, but a mouse?!

I know... But I guess the policy is designed so they don't have to say, "these are okay, these aren't" etc.

Perhaps, but it would save you £28 for a keyboard. The apple keyboards are very nice though, very nice indeed.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 18:08

    Sigh.

The IT department were absoloute cretins.

we got them back though, with the old mac keyboards with the 2 usb slots in them we plugged one keyboard into another guys and used it to type into word.

When ever he stopped typing we would write "word is unable to save this file contact IT on extension X"

They were not quite as amused as we were at having to come look at it., or the guy who was made to look a bit silly

A guy I know went to visit Google and Microsoft head offices recently.

When he arrived at the Microsoft office and was waiting in the Lobby he asked the receptionist if there was Wifi. She made him sign a disclaimer which included a separate part which made you agree that you wouldn't ask anyone on reception to help if you couldn't connect.

When he went to visit Google he picked up the free open public wifi on the taxi ride on the way into the office.

Apparently at google there is an office on each floor with brand new monitors, keyboards, mice, computers etc. And you can go and get whatever you need whenever you want as long as you sign for it.

Missed off the end. Google believe that it is cheaper because people don't go and get things as a status symbol if they can get whatever whenever. They just get what they need.

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 18:11

A guy I know went to visit Google and Microsoft head offices recently.

That sounds pretty normal for both companies. We have free wi-fi in all the stores, it wouldn't be feasible to ask every single person coming in to sign anything.

When he arrived at the Microsoft office and was waiting in the Lobby he asked the receptionist if there was Wifi. She made him sign a disclaimer which included a separate part which made you agree that you wouldn't ask anyone on reception to help if you couldn't connect.

i've just been made aware of this book did anyone else know anything about it? Jenson was meant to be releasing a book last year but never did as, i'm assuming, the end of 2008 wouldn't make the happiest of endings... i've heard no official news about this latest book though, and it seems strange for the idea of it to be out so soon. What do you think? it's amazon, so i'm assuming it's not made up....

erm no sorry. i've not got a clue why she hasn't been travelling with them.

I do wonder if it had anything to do with the fact Jenson was paying for his own air travel at the beginning of the season... maybe Brawn couldn't fund the travel of all of 'team Button' I know at the start of season only Mikey (his physio), His dad and Jessica were travelling to races with him. His manager travelled to some, more in the later part of the season i think so maybe it was decided that as Nicola was Brawn's PR girl they didn't necessarily need Jules at each race? I'm assuming one reason she wasn't in Brazil and his manager was is that she was needed back in the UK for this event on tuesday.....

it's pure speculation, but that's my guess at the moment.

    three surely

'Button became world champion in Brazil'

'Button was oh so unlucky not being world champion in Abu Dhabi'

'Button became world champion in Brazil before the FIA decided to be reet annoying by docking him 20 points for speeding in a pitlane, so unlucky not being world champion in Abu Dhabi'

  • Journeyer24/10/2009 at 19:50

    Hey, everyone. :D

Has Joe's article on the F1 commissioner role been brought up?

    Call the commissioner!

And we could have some good news on hand:

Todt told me in Singapore that he had three or four people in mind and that they were not people directly involved in F1 but rather ex-CEOs of big international companies. This is effectively what Sir Jackie Stewart has been arguing for in recent years.

What worries me with Button right now is all the catty talk from Button's manager in the press with his contract. It probably stems out of frustration that Ross Brawn has outflanked them position-wise, but Goddard's actions don't help them any.

I think the fans should be allowed to apply to be F1 Commisioner and then be given 150 words maximum to explain why they should be commisioner

Button's manager, if i remember rightly has been like this in the past with the press and things... it seems to be the way he works... i don't agree with it. but i can't see Button going anywhere other than Brawn. well, at least it's not Essentially Sport running the show for Jenson anymore - that was a total disaster back then. Still a bit sad he didn't stay with the Robertsons, but in retrospect, the decisions they would've made might've not put him in a position to win a title.

Not to burst your bubble. But theres only like 5 drivers been confirmed for next season....

oh yes, but planning your life to be close to the TV at a certain time on certain Sunday will be over

You thought there was bias before? Well you ain't seen nothing until you get me in charge of this. Timo Glock is automatically on pole every race. Qualifying only determins the lower, rubbbishy places. The pole grid spot is now a whole mile in front of second and Glock must be in the quickest car out there.

Being a commisioner is better than working in a supermarket. Although I hope I get a 10% F1 discount running F1 or there will be trouble

Because I would force drivers to overtake - I'd mandate a point for each successful overtake. :D

Another point, any driver that over takes Timo gets a 10 second stop go penalty. If you do it twice you are disqualified. That includes overtaking him when he retires.

They should have little numbers that appear over the top of their car to indicate they have scored an extra point, like in a video game or something

Perhaps if they do it by cheating they get the Family Fortunes incorrect buzzer

So that no one scores any points at all. You haven't thought this one through have you?

  • RG24/10/2009 at 20:08

So that no one scores any points at all. You haven't thought this one through have you?

Cunning plan though, you stay behind Timo for 55 laps out of a 56 lap race. Then you overtake him, get a stop go penalty, but don't take it, cross the finish line and every one ends up with a 25 second penalty.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 20:10

Todt told me in Singapore that he had three or four people in mind and that they were not people directly involved in F1 but rather ex-CEOs of big international companies. This is effectively what Sir Jackie Stewart has been arguing for in recent years.

I hope it isnt JYS, he would be good, but it could end up like ferrari used to be with the FIA. I am sure he wouldnt intend to, but his connections to his former team is a little uncomfortable.

Somone who doesnt watch the sport, has no loyalties or preconceptions could be a good idea.

i've just been made aware of That is a bit quick... I'd wait for more info

Its not that quick, most sportsmen who are still competing have their books ghost-written. Jenson probably has a 20-40 minute conversation after each race, then the ghost writter can extrapolate it into a chapter. Jenson signs it at the end and his name goes on the cover...

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 20:18

I think the fans should be allowed to apply to be F1 Commisioner and then be given 150 words maximum to explain why they should be commisioner

Im not doing a word count, but i would sack bernie, double the number of races and change the points system to cover the whole top 10. (15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1)

He could do if he sat down and took the time to do so at the end of his career, as it used to be done.

Still you cant blame him, everyone seems to be doing it and these quasi-biographies seem to sell quite well

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:10

she can't be at yours tomorrow, there's no race?

she will be at mine tomorrow too... she's gone to a party where she either the people don't like her (only about 2 people) or don't really know her, she wasn't sure about it, so i offered her the chance to come to mine instead, and it kinda grew to her coming to mine after the party while i sit at home drinking rose and editing photos... i should also add i'm in a really really bad mood following a phone call i've just had. :)

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:12

Are you her excuse for staying out partying all night?

nope. i'm just the home she is going to crash at tonight, and the person she is going to spend the day with tomorrow. tbh she is doing me a huge favour as the electrics company are turning off our electricity tomorrow from 8 - 4pm... so that means no computer, no internet, no lights, no heating (except our log fire)... so she is keeping me company and sane, so i don;t have to spend the entire day with my rents :D

  • Lukeh24/10/2009 at 22:12

    You alright?

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:19

    You alright?

all i'm going to say is that i'm not that happy with the head of sixth form (and prefects) atm. she gave me this job to paint this huge huge room and it's adjoining rooms with a friend and 'do something with it' at the beginning of half term, i've spent ages on it, and all of my free time at school, even in some cases sacrificing some of my grades to get it done, but there are only two of us. Now she is thanking another of my friends for 'all the hard work' she has put in... when in reality she has only done a few hours work.. and i'm now all annoyed because she thinks this friend is 'wonderful' and has put so much hard work and effort in, and has completely forgotten about me, and the fact i'm a)in charge of it, and b) have stayed behind multiple evenings till almost 7pm when school finishes at 3:30 to get it all done.. i have paint in my hair that wont come out and everything!

    humph

    but i'm alright... just annoyed.

  • Pat W24/10/2009 at 22:20

    Evenin' all.

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:20

nope. i'm just the home she is going to crash at tonight, and the person she is going to spend the day with tomorrow. tbh she is doing me a huge favour as the electrics company are turning off our electricity tomorrow from 8 - 4pm... so that means no computer, no internet, no lights, no heating (except our log fire)... so she is keeping me company and sane, so i don;t have to spend the entire day with my rents :D

    No internet? Is that legal?

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:20

    No internet? Is that legal?

apparently so. stupid electrics company.. on a sunday too!!

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 22:22

all i'm going to say is that i'm not that happy with the head of sixth form (and prefects) atm. she gave me this job to paint this huge huge room and it's adjoining rooms with a friend and 'do something with it' at the beginning of half term, i've spent ages on it, and all of my free time at school, even in some cases sacrificing some of my grades to get it done, but there are only two of us.

Don't ever sacrifice your grades for anything like that. You are leaving the school in a few months time but the grades will be with you for a long time. Don't believe anyone at school who tells you anything like that is as important as your grades.

You own your life. They don't

  • Pat W24/10/2009 at 22:22

    but i'm alright... just annoyed.

    That does sound exceedingly irritating.

  • Lukeh24/10/2009 at 22:23

Can someone explain to me what's so illegal about drafting/slipstreaming? Is it considered cheating in motor racing or something?

Go to Emily's house which presumably has electricity

i'm going to, but i can't atm cause she is away and it's half term. i've got to wait a whole week, and by then i'll have just given up and will just hand the job over to this friend, just cause i'll have had enough of it by then and will want the problem to go away... plus i know this friend will love taking it on, she's enthusiastic and lovely in that way :)

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:23

Why would you ask a question like that? Slipstreaming or drafting is normal in racing and everyone does it all the time

    It isn't cheating.

I have been investigating why, on Forza 3, all my laptimes are being classed as invalid. Little bit of argy bargy or off track action, OK I can understand, but even when that doesn't happen they get classed as invalid. Turns out the declassifies the laptime because of slipstreaming.

Stupid. I know it's only a game but... stupid.

  • RG24/10/2009 at 22:26

Yup. Don't drop your grades for an unappreciated bit of paint.

You own your life. They don't

this is true. i've had 15 years at this school and i'm just finding this out :)

Don't you dare give up if you've done the majority of the work so far.

i'm nearly up to 35 hours on this room...(i know because i'm counting my volunteering hours for my ucas things...) but it feels totally unappreciated. I can't wait until i get to do something that i want to do with my life...

I guess its to endure ll laptimes are set under the same conditions for the leaderboards.

Otherwise you would have people messing about with teams of cars to help them slipstream down all the straights

  • Pat W24/10/2009 at 22:30

At least you ae learning before you go to uni. When you get their you put your foot down from day 1 and make it clear you are no-one's servant.

And if the lecturers don't speak English properly, thus impacting your learning, complain and organise protests. If I can't convince my Zoe to do it, maybe I have a chance with Lou.

What happened to student protests? Everybody has gone soft!

You could wait until you get your response from the uni's you apply to then, make a big point of resigning your prefecture and pinning it on the teacher for being so unsupportive and taking advantage?

  • Jeremy24/10/2009 at 22:33

can i recommend a bigger brush?

    Have you read Huckleberry Finn?

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:33

How do you slipstream in a triathalon? on bikes?

Yes. Because everyone starts the bike part at different times depending how they finished the previous section they decided that to save anyon having an unfair advantage slipstreaming was not allowed so they had to either sit 10 metres or something behind the cyclist ahead or make a serious attempt to pass him. It turned out to be completely unmanageable because everyone had a different idea of 10 metres so they scrapped it

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 22:33

can i recommend a bigger brush?

    :D Or a roller?

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 22:34

This might seem random, but is it possible that when i type a lot quickly that linux isnt picking up all my keystrokes?

Its normally just my spelling which is bad, but now i al missing out half of some of the words?

  • me24/10/2009 at 22:34

How close is it to completion? I'm just wondering if at the end of it they'll suddenly turn around and say they appreciate it..

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 22:35

Yes. that does sound very silly. It would make more sense to do the bikes first, run seccond and then the swim last wouldnt it?

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:35

And if the lecturers don't speak English properly, thus impacting your learning, complain and organise protests. If I can't convince my Zoe to do it, maybe I have a chance with Lou.

Definitely. You behave as if you are the customer and complain about anything you are not happy with. There is an old motor racing saying that used to be applied to Mansell. The squeakiest axle gets the most grease. Moan and you will benefit.

  • guille2306 (back in Bariloche)24/10/2009 at 22:35

  • Lukeh24/10/2009 at 22:36

A spray gun on a rotating base. Spray everything

    you aren't helping.. :(

this room is MASSIVE! each section needed two layers of paint, there were two different colours, 15 doors to sand, a floor to buff and make look pretty, a ceiling to paint, 15 smaller rooms to paint, decorate and make look respectable, and 3 rooms worth of books to move!!! and all this was/is being done mainly by two of us in the free periods we have and the after school time we can spare... we aren't painters or decorators we are A level students :( i even gave up a day of my birthday weekend to paint...

it's not like it's a small room.. that would be easy, i painted my own room in a day...

    #sorrylou :(

so you should be, that was mean :(

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:37

that does sound very silly. It would make more sense to do the bikes first, run seccond and then the swim last wouldnt it?

I think for safety you want the swimming early. You don't want 200 people developing cramp while they are swimming in the sea.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 22:37

I have decided it is an utterly crap slipstreaming ruling in the game. It's cancelling my laptimes for cars slipstreaming me too. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • Lukeh24/10/2009 at 22:37

    Blocking?

Nope... even when they're not even close! You get a little warning arrow flashing next to your time to indicate that you have done something wrong. When you have done nothing wrong.

  • Jeremy24/10/2009 at 22:37

    Have you read Huckleberry Finn?

I may have meant the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the preceding book. Tom Sawyer convinces other's to paint the fence?

No you can in races. Albeit if you're all a lap apart it seems :P

    Very odd.

  • Andy Taylor24/10/2009 at 22:38

It seems a bit unfair to leave you to do a job of this size, even Anneka Rice would struggle with that.

  • Nick24/10/2009 at 22:44

Its too long, i cant remember the last bit!

And since this is the old version its realy hard to pay attention on the straight!

If I was you I would go in on Monday and say you need to spend all your free time working towards your exams and sorting out a uni place so you don't have time to do the decorating any more.

They'd then turn around and say "you can't leave it half finished".

So Lou then offers to spend one hour a week on it, max, to end when exam prep ramps up.

  • Pat W24/10/2009 at 22:46

Its too long, i cant remember the last bit!

    Only 8 miles?

And since this is the old version its realy hard to pay attention on the straight!

Ah I see. I don't remember the last bit of the old one. They drivers used to check their dials on the straight.

All they are doing is saving money by getting you to do this. Walk away from it and spend the time doin something you enjoy like e-mailing photographers.

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:46

The only bit we need to know is that you are now going to tell them to shove it.

when i get back from 1/2 term i'm going to come back all refreshed and with work up to date and to the best standard i can and i'm just going to turn round if she asks me why it wasn't done in the first 6weeks of term i'll just convey my feelings on the matter in a mature and lovely way and suggest she ask someone else to do it if it's not being done fast enough. she wont give up one of her half term days to let me come in and finish up... so what else can i do.

  • Pat W24/10/2009 at 22:47

    Excellent. That's what I meant :)

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:47

They'd then turn around and say "you can't leave it half finished".

So Lou then offers to spend one hour a week on it, max, to end when exam prep ramps up.

So Lou then say I have spent x hours on it when another ten people have done the same then I will think about doing more.

I missed this bit. The correct answer here is "neither should you".

when somebody says 'a mark' I would think in a small room, not in the whole building...

anyway, I agree with everybody in that you should do it only for the time (and at the times you're comfortable with). anything else is just wasting your last months at school.

  • lou24/10/2009 at 22:49

Exactly. Don't volunteer another second of your time and just refuse politely to have anything to do with it again. There is absolutely nothing the school can do to make you and they have no hold over you.

  • Steven Roy24/10/2009 at 22:52

the good thing about this whole thing, and being able to escape to cambridge for a few days is that i've now basically decided i'm going to through myself into photography for uni rather than doing psychology as i was thinking... i'm just going to go for my dream and see where it will lead me. I don't mind if i don't get paid much to start with or even at all as long as i'm happy and i don't have that 'what if' in my head for the rest of my life.

I think that is a good decision. The good thing about doing something like photography is that you can show people what you can do and use that to open doors. You can send photos to Darren Heath and he can assess your ability. You can't do that with psychology.

that's a very good decision! good luck with that :-)

(although based on your photography skills now you won't need any extra help from luck)

Will you guys be staying in a tent then ;)

  • Alex Andronov24/10/2009 at 23:53

    Mind = Blown

Actually it was Joe to a main part. We were watching the amazing caves in Northern Italy / Switzerland on Kevin McLoud's series. And I mentioned that the problem was that TV flattened all of the perspective of how large it was, Katherine agreed. And I mentioned that Joe had mentioned it on the podcast this week about TVs ability to flatten. I mentioned that people who see Formula 1 in real life for the first time, Joe said, talk about it for three weeks afterwards because it is so amazing. Luckily Katherine said, "if you are going to talk about it for three weeks afterwards, then I want to have been there so I can say, 'yeah I know, I was there'".

And while she's not sure about Formula 1, like literally everyone on the planet fast cars making loads of noise is exiting :)

correct. I think I have an affinity with Whitmarsh.
