I would continue the tradition of pointing out what special day it is today, however it can only be the "day where McLaren face the FIA." It's bound to be on the minds of everyone, but are we expecting an answer today or will the governing body need a day or so to think about it? Anyway, elsewhere, we're discussing:
- Alonso has been discussing the chances of Renault catching up to bid for the title, and in doing so suggests that Brawn GP and Red Bull may appear to be small teams but could be considered big teams - bigger than even Renault. Brawn? Really?
- Daimler has managed to turn a $3bn profit from Q1 last year to an almost $2bn loss this year. This is only relevant because Daimler own Mercedes who have a stake in McLaren. What do you mean tenuous link? The good news is that although their shares suffered, they picked up again by the end of the day.
- If you're thinking about getting married, or know anyone who can't quite decide on how their day should go, then I have written the very post! Looking at some of the elements you could pick if you had the money... and desire... and understanding partner.
That's it for today. Stay tuned throughout the day as we'll discuss anything that hits headlines, including any news coming out of the McLaren hearing. I'll see you in the comments.
Alonso is possibly regretting returning to Renault?
Hehe, today is the big day indeed for Mclaren. I'm not even gonna predict what could happpen as I genuinely have no idea what could happen...
Sure - Honda-funded, Virgin-sponsored, you can make the case that they are a big team. Not Honda-big, but big nonetheless.
I'll be very surprised if we get a decision from the FIA today, they wont start til lunch time, then they'll hear the evidence, go for tea, get "mummy dear" to wipe up the dribble, think about what they've heard and be asleep before you know it. My monies on 14:00 Thursday earliest, bless'em, we just dont realise what a tough job it is that they do on our behalf.
The FIA won't publish the result until tomorrow, which is just as well as I do my annual "Renault and long-term driver strategy" entry today. I have no idea how this ended up becoming an annual tradition on my blog, it just did...
When you have someone as tetchy as Alonso (who can go at any minute) and someone as unbelievably slow as Piquet, they must surely be procrastinating a lot of last-minute decisions...
I see the doohickey is still up and running. I guess the rumors of the doohickeys death have been greatly exaggerated:D
It died, but it has resurrected anew. :)
Oh that's funny! :D
Hehe. Morning, Gavin.
God Morgen!
You vanished for 2 hours there. Haha! So... today is hearing day. Still no result until tomorrow, though... What I think will be more interesting, though, is what will happen to the budget cap and other 2010 regs at the World Council meeting.
There won't be a result today - at the very earliest 6pm if it is...
Alia said the result of the hearing won't be out until tomorrow.
But I'd think the World Council decisions should be out by today. Could be wrong on that count, though.
I'm referring here to the 2010-related decisions. I wonder what figure FOTA suggested?
From JA's Twitter:
Wow... going there all alone (except for his lawyer). Good luck to him - he might just get eaten alive there. I originally thought Lewis should go to show support, but that might just cause more trouble than they really need to handle.
Morning folks (from the city library)
Gavin - You'd better start worrying - just found out that the Nissan GTR IS coming for the TCL mod! HA! Told you I'd seen a pic of it! All it took was a simple query on rFactorCentral and I got the answer from one of the guys working on the mod. The Jag XJS is going to be coming too.
Better start preparing for me flying past your Bimmer off the line after all then, Gav ;)
And here's the proof, a post from RS_Owner, one of the mod developers, explaining the situation (I'm not Madcowie btw):
:D
I won't believe you until I see a pic!
And here's the proof, a post from RS_Owner, one of the mod developers, explaining the situation:
So the Skyline is an unofficial add-on?
Can't show you the pic yet. It was on RaceSimCentral but they still haven't finished changing the site. Just searching back through VirtualR.net to see if I can find any stories on it.
Racesimcentral - the only thing taking longer to develop than KERS!
There's been a screenshot flying around of an XJS which TCL claim isn't their work. So one would assume that the DR30 Skyline is too. I'm not sure on that. But I know for certain that according to that developer of the mod, the R32 GT-R IS coming.
That is going to ruin what is a very well-balanced and fun mod. I managed to beat the RS500's at Silverstone 1988 in an M3 - but man, was I overdriving that car or what?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74932
I knew that would happen. A1GP gets all the bad breaks.
Everybody, enjoy this weekend's racing as you ain't never gonna see these cars again :(
I'm sure those who disagree with it won't drive it, such as yourself. I like the car and yes, I'm going to drive it because that's my choice. I grew up watching it on the ATCC videos my dad had. Because of the GT-R, as well as the Sierra and Commodore, I got into touring car racing.
Besides, I'm sure any online championships that want to keep the racing close won't allow it to be used if they feel too many people will use it just to win. I just want to drive it because I want to experience what it was like to race. If I win with it, then that's a bonus.
The problem is that you NEED to restrict it as every noob will choose it - and then wipe out half the field and ruin the race. I've seen enough GPL races and GT races online to attest to that.
Mexico was cancelled, then reinstated, then cancelled again. It just wasn't meant to be.
Not optimistic on their chances to do another season?
Nope. Too many people have been turned off by the way it has been run, it's a minority championship and it has no money left :(
Ah well, there's always GP2...
Texeira looks like he's still confident. IndyCar doesn't have any money left, but it's still running anyway...
True, true. GP2 Asia is still a better championship than A1GP. But A1GP's downfall hasn't really been Bernie - they are their own downfall.
Teixera has finally admitted the series was in trouble during the Portimao event ... so it is in trouble.
I agree.
Ahem...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_mGdfbSyi4
:D
I seem to have missed that - what did he say?
I'll look at that later...
Dunno - I'm paraphrasing from something I heard from Midweek Motorsport...
I never get to listen to that podcast. Hehehe. Oh well - today will still be very interesting.
Well you should be listening!
Haha! :D Will do so when I find the time. ;)
Donington updates from DoningtonF1 on Twitter:
Hmmm... This was what we suspected all along, wasn't it?
*waves* :)
another day of uni, another c++ annoyance
Another doodle?
Hahaha! What is it about now?
forgot my pad :(
Stuff about file systems :s
More pointer fun, I see. I just vaguely remember that now... ;)
Apparently contractors walked offsite 2 weeks ago because of backpay due. {Comment #40}
Ouch. You know things are bad when the contractors stop work. It's not like they've got a heap of other jobs on their books, if they're anything like the construction companies I know.
forgot my pad :( {Comment #44}
That's awkward. Does the student next to you have any spare paper? (For writing lecture notes and using the pies and Flavio Snailatore sketches as aides-memoire, of course...)
Yup. Contractors stopping work is never a good thing. Strange that we hear a lot from Gillett when there's good news, but absolutely nothing when there's bad news...
LeeMcK tweets: "Not long til WMSC result - McLaren will know by lunch time."
it's not so bad this morning because it's all computer programming. law this afternoon may be an issue though...
That is QUICK! I guess that leaves the afternoon for the 2010 regs?
They said that last time - and then we waited until 6!
I'd give them the benefit of the doubt this time - they actually released their decision on the double diffusers 2-3 hours earlier than expected.
Strange that we hear a lot from Gillett when there’s good news, but absolutely nothing when there’s bad news… {Comment #49}
Probably because he's too busy putting metaphorical fires out.
Tis true, but not even a press release from him. I'm sure a lot of the F1 media have asked him for his side of the story, so giving no response doesn't really help his cause, because it gives a negative impression.
LeeMcK tweets: “Not long til WMSC result - McLaren will know by lunch time.” {Comment #50}
So the body language of McLaren (well, Lewis and lawyer) could give away whether it went relatively well or badly, but depending on how well the WMSC can keep a secret, we still might not know the details?
To be fair, it's not like they need to spend three hours deciding whether each point is valid because McLaren effectively did that before they started with their written public apology.
I guess it depends if whitmarsh is arguing or apologising I guess...
That is QUICK! I guess that leaves the afternoon for the 2010 regs? {Comment #52}
I guess so. I feel quite tense about these discussions, to be honest - I have a feeling something may be up.
You mean Martin and lawyer. But I don't think we've seen any pics of them yet today.
That is true - the decision was probably made more or less before this hearing.
yup. They must be deep in the brown stuff this time.
Gillett has been very adamant that they'd beat out the critics. Well, he may soon need to admit that they were right all along...
I guess it depends if whitmarsh is arguing or apologising I guess… {Comment #58}
I'm not even sure Whitmarsh is there. Given that he issued an apology last week, arguing this week might cause a delay... ...while the courtroom fights the urge to roll on the floor in laughter.
Only Whitmarsh and lawyer are there for McLaren. He's not even arguing it anymore, he's been apologizing - profusely.
My guess of them being forced to wear tutus to every race may not happen... but one can hope.
Maybe they'd ask Martin and Lewis to do a Bob McK at Silverstone? :)
You mean Martin and lawyer. But I don’t think we’ve seen any pics of them yet today. {Comment #60}
We won't until they leave the courtroom. Come to think of it, they may not leave until they've finished the WMSC meeting - Martin is a voting member, after all.
Ohhh... Very interesting, that. He'll first be pleading with his fellow council members, then he'll join them afterwards...
Speaking of C++ this afternoon I get to experience the pleausers of Binary File handling. Yay! :D
Maybe they’d ask Martin and Lewis to do a Bob McK at Silverstone? {Comment #66}
Thankfully that's not in the list of penalties the WMSC is empowered to issue - not least because it may well constitute a breach of Article 151c in itself. It would be somewhat like punishing a thief by ordering the thief to steal something else...
New entry from JA on Brawn and Branson here.
Saw that yesterday, wondering what it'll be now... am really hoping Brawn stay Brawn at least until the end of the season...
I wonder if another sponsor is waiting in the wings?
JA said there's a LOT of them waiting in the wings. It's in the blog.
3 race ban!!!!
The use of 'ongoing' suggests to me Branson has bigger plans within the team. It should please me because it mean plenty of financial support, but with Branson, it also worries me...
Ohhh… Very interesting, that. He’ll first be pleading with his fellow council members, then he’ll join them afterwards… {Comment #68}
Now that's a conflict of interest!
From Autosport on the budget cap:
Times are a-changing, indeed...
McCheaters given a three race ban apparently
Yeah I read it. Either he's gonna buy the rights to the car and sell off the sponsorship or someone else is coming in to sponsor the car, I think...
It's confirmed, 3 race ban for Mclaren! :o
You've GOT to be kidding... That's just ridiculous.
BBC?
:( :( :(
where?
Yep. appearing on their sport section header right now.
yep an the breaking news bit
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/default.stm
Look at the breaking news ticker, no link yet about it.
If true, they'll miss Spain, Monaco, and Turkey. This is just... absurd. What will the sponsors do? What will Mercedes do?
SUSPENDED BAN
3 race ban!!!! Comment #75}
Fear not. It's suspended, which given the behaviour of McLaren, means that it's unlikely to trigger.
Don't scare me like that again!!!
So they're on probation for Spain, Monaco, and Turkey.
oooh so it is...
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/the-mclaren-decision/
Different kettle of fish, entirely!
:) :) :)
They should be used to that
Oops - it means they're on probation for 12 months. A repeat offense gets them a 3-race ban. So they're off the hook, basically.
Good on you Joe - proper journalism FTW!
Agreed! :D :D :D
Now, onto that budget cap...
what does suspended 3 race ban mean???
Also, there's no mention of any fines or points penalties. This means that if McLaren are good, the only actual penalty they get for the incident is the disqualification from Australia that everyone already knew about.
This also gives me hope that there are unlikely to be any stupid decisions made at the WMSC meeting this afternoon.
A repeat offense anytime in the next 12 months (May 2009-April 2010) gets them a 3-race ban.
It means they won't get the punishment unless further facts are made public or if they are naughty again.
A fair punishment I reckon...
At an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council held in Paris on 29 April 2009, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes admitted five charges of breaching article 151c of the International Sporting Code relating to events at the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.
The following decision was taken:
“Having regard to the open and honest way in which McLaren Team Principal, Mr Martin Whitmarsh, addressed the WMSC and the change in culture which he made clear has taken place in his organisation, the WMSC decided to suspend the application of the penalty it deems appropriate.
“That penalty is a suspension of the team from three races of the FIA Formula One World Championship. This will only be applied if further facts emerge regarding the case or if, in the next 12 months, there is a further breach by the team of article 151c of the International Sporting Code.”
The full reasons for this decision will be issued shortly.
here is the statement form FIA
Yup - as I said, they're basically off the hook.
Never assume anything with the WMSC...
Booooooo.
Agreed.
what does suspended 3 race ban mean??? {Comment #100}
It means that if McLaren are spotted doing anything else that could be construed as damaging to the sport (and thus breaching Article 151c) in the next 12 months, they will get the 3 race ban as of the point when they are found guilty of such an incident. Unless and until that happens, everyone carries on as if no penalty had been imposed.
I think that's fair, Lukeh - they should know better next time. Shame on them if they try that again.
Why Boo?
I wonder if not punishing Ron took the pleasure out of it for them?
They might catch Brawn ;)
Martin did emphasize the culture change in McLaren. He must've meant "Ron's gone now..."
I guess so.. I mean, it is fair, I just hated the whole lying of the team and dishonesty aspect, not to mention the continuation of lies when the team had the chance to own up for it. Would've been a 3 race ban with no suspension if I could make the call but that's why I'm in Uni and not in WMSC :P
Never assume anything with the WMSC… {Comment #105}
My thinking was that if the WMSC expected to do anything crazy, they'd have given McLaren a harsh penalty in order to distract people from the decision. While a ban for the season or something of that ilk would have caused bad press, the FIA could easily have blamed it on evil McLaren and therefore not take the full impact of the blast. If the main story was that the WMSC had done something stupid, then the FIA, as the WMSC's organiser, has no way of dodging the blow.
I suppose it is possible for the WMSC to commit an act of stupidity accidentally, though...
If they got banned, Merc might've pulled out. If they did, Brawn would be in even more trouble...
Still, McLaren are a whopping 42 points behind Brawn, and they're still behind Toyota and Red Bull on pace. They're still long-shots for the title at best...
Exactly. :)
Who's ban is this?
It's not a ban, it's suspended
Who's suspended ban is this?
Ron's
Who's Ron
Ron's Gone baby, Ron's Gone
Because nobody else has ever lied or been dishonest in F1?
I shall remind you that the team owner of your beloved Brawns has been in trouble in the past for some rather devious things!
Reposting thoughts from Autosport on the budget cap:
Times are a-changing, indeed...
He's been in trouble for running illegal cars (which one could argue wasn't done on purpose), not for lying to the stewards. 2 different kettles of fish...
But in terms of punishment, I agree with Gavin - a race ban would've been too harsh on the team, not to mention Amy's boy... :D
I'm not saying that dishonesty has never been a part of the sport in previous years including Mr Brawn at times, although his cases were more with legality rather than lies I'd say, but in a time where transparency with the teams is become far more commonplace in seeing how F1 works and runs, one of the first things we as fans get to see is a team with the current World Champion already producing stuff like that and it's just left a very, very sour taste in my mouth really concerning Mclaren.
It's just my point of view anyways, I'm not saying the WMSC make the wrong choice here, I think I just would've been harsher with them.
Breaking a law and lying is the same thing ... they are both dishonest and used to gain an advantage.
Running an illegal car isn't dishonest (so long as it wasn't done on purpose). In such cases, you exclude them from the results, but not ban them from future races.
He was in a team that ran a car with hidden traction control, modified a standard fuel filter, ignored black flags, ran the car too low and had a less than clean driver. That is as bad as lying to gain a position in my book!
Yes but Benetton ran a car with hidden traction control, modified a standard fuel filter, ignored black flags, ran the car too low and had a less than clean driver. That is as bad as lying to gain a position in my book!
It’s just my point of view anyways, I’m not saying the WMSC make the wrong choice here, I think I just would’ve been harsher with them. {Comment #124}
Remember Hamilton had already been disqualified from Australia for this, despite it being outside the powers of the stewards to do so. Unless you are suggesting that lying to a steward (an action not specifically banned by any regulation) is worse than the "secret" second fuel tank BAR had in 2005, a three-race ban on top would have been unjustified.
Do you seriously think at team would run an illegal car without knowing?
Besides, lying is a heat of the moment decision whilst running an illegal car takes some amount of planning - that has to be worse, right?
Did Toyota just go "oops" in Australia?
And my point is that Brawn did run illegal cars on purpose @ Benetton
Hidden traction control - no one was ever able to prove that they ran it in a race
Modified fuel filter - it's actually odd they got no punishment from this, but there you go...
Ignored black flags - the FIA punished them with a 3-race ban for it - which is even harsher than what McLaren got today
Ran the car too low - did the plank get too think because they ran too low? or because they ran over too many a kerb?
Less than clean driver - we've been through this debate before, so I won't go back to it again...
I think the point is this McLaren thing was blown out of proportion
Sure - it's just a matter of having a different interpretation of the rules...
LOL. Like diffusers....
Assuming the car was illegal due to a different interpretation of the rules, lying would have to be more deliberate.
Exactly!
Just remembered with the modified fuel filter - McLaren were also caught with a modified fuel filter. No punishment for them, either...
I'll probably write up a stupidly huge blog post tonight about how I feel anyways. Must go now to law lecture though, so I'll see you guys later,
Yeah but then fixed it for the race. If they hadnt have fixed it they would have had a punishment. They were in effect given a warning.
Later, Lukeh. :)
Only after they were "caught"
True but you can only really be given the warning they got if they had been caught. If that makes sense :S
All I'm going to say is
Hmmmm...
Not sure if this has been covered, but I think the FIA has contributed to the whole thing, by divers being scared to overtake under the safety car. This doesn't excuse McLaren, but I'm sure the Spa thing was on their mind.
No doubt about it - Spa was on their minds. And it was the very paranoia of repeating that which got them into trouble again.
Hang on im confused.... surley they arent allowed to overtake under the safty car and so shouldnt be scared about it.
Although yes FIA have made things worse by having rules that no one understands.
Personally, I think the wost thing is that this issue has taken some attention away from a great season start, especially in Malaysia.
When Trulli went off, the SC was already called out, so they weren't sure if Trulli had gone sufficiently off for Hamilton to take the position.
True, except Trulli went off. In truth Lewis did nothing wrong at that point
i sleep for 8 hours and miss 153 comments? during the night?
It's only night in some places ;-)
Well, quite. Everyone pushes the rules to the limits of their interpretation.
It's the responsibility of the teams to ensure that their cars meet the regulations – that's why they do all the measurements when the cars go to the 'bridge' on Friday/Saturday.
Flexi-wings are the kind of subtle naughtiness that usually come to the attention of the scrutineers via other teams squealing.
Although it's night here now
Exactly. Kinda like Michael passing Kimi who went off at France 2002. But since none of the cameras saw the incident in full, no one really knew what was going on. That's why McLaren got paranoid.
ok i got it now. thnks :)
Oooh... I wonder who squealed, then... :D
That's what you get when there's a McLaren WMSC hearing - in the morning! :P
i think this may be the most comments any dropped item has ever gotten:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/felipebaby-mp3
Someone needs to ensure that Massa hears that :D
they've announced the result already?
Well that line is going to be the radio transmission of the year
Yep. 3 race suspended ban.
So off the hook, basically.
predictable.
doesn't discourage anyone else from lying to the stewards in future mind you.
:)
Except McLaren... for 12 months at least.
yep - that's what i thought. then again, the PR nightmare McLaren got over this brouhaha should be enough to discourage others...
stop me if you've linked to this one before:
http://www.autoevolution.com/news/felipe-baby-song-makes-the-hitlist-6215.html
There was the lost 3rd/4th place as well, and Davey Ryan....
True, but Mclaren had to make drastic changes for this to happen.
It's worth noting that Joe Saward was the first to break the story with the FIA statement...
true enough.
go joe!
:D
What is it with the Internet lately? Either it's unbelivably slow, or it keeps cutting out. It's been slow on any PC I've been using, actually - even on the office Intranet!
I do like that in this internet age all you have to do is drop.io something to make it a hit.
He's the man. Most balanced F1 writer I've read in ages
my favourite line:
"The words have led to a new hit single"
??
w00t! :D
If only they hadn't cancelled TOTP. Damn.
Someone has GOT to send that to the BBC. Perfect "closing" music
And Rob and Felipe...
well, we made it onto page 22 by posting in the autosport forum. gimmie 5 and i'll have another go.
I can see Christine on the grid at Silverstone now, mic in hand......
it won't end up on the telly, but it might end up in a BBC blog entry... Jake's, maybe? ;)
I think Brundle has a sense of humor...?
But he doesn't really have funny blog entries...
Wait! JA makes funny blog entries! Let's tweet him a link? :D
after what we did to james' youtube video??
job done:
http://forums.autosport.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108257
You need a video with hand gestures
Christine sings this line like a pro! Wow. :D
it's official: a suspended sentence... oh c'mon. predictable but lacking any real force. just what you want from a governing body. not even a fine? i guess the quote at the start of the week about the team considering their future in the sport worked perfectly...
She sings the whole thing like a pro! It's great
i still say it's the hamilton-mosley alliance that saved this team from any more trouble. but well, the FIA were in a no-win situation. any punishment with real force will just result in an uproar from the fans...
But that line in particular - she can just make you melt! :D
LOL.ooh ooh oh
exactly!
Listening to it again - *melts* :D
Don't like repeating myswlf, but they did loose the points and position, and Davey Ryan through all this
Good points.
I'm sure somebody has mentioned this already... But I thought this a strange line from AUTOSPORT...
we all know he took one for the team. only ron says otherwise.
I don't think it's not unfair to imply that it goes without saying that there may or may not be too many double negatives in that sentence. Or not. :D
AUTOSPORT needs an editor to take a look at that sentence and chop it up into shorter ones.
Yeah... Absolutely... It's odd in article about McLaren lying and a change of culture they basically call Ron a liar.
I wonder if, in a move unconnected with libel laws, a lawyer might have rewritten that line.
hehe. true, although i guess this was a lie with a wink.
Absolutely. Just loving the irony :)
I don't think it's unfair to say that you're not making a bad point there my friend!
Oh, my aching head...! :P Hahaha!
I am unable to find myself able to not agree with you there Sir.
Yes. Or no...?
Just for fun: http://www.fyens.dk/article/1233452:Sport--McLaren-f-r-betinget-karantaene-i-Formel-1?rss
Mclaren story in Danish ;)
5
42.
9,736? Hahaha! This is just silly. :D
How dare you respond to the answer of the life, the universe and everything with a statement like that! :D
Roast goat sandwiches for lunch now....
:(
Now aren't you meant to be studying?
Lunch and the canteen is closed! CLOSED!
You are really loving Bahrain goat, aren't ya? :P
Welcome to the university system - almost as illogical as the FIA sometimes...
The pub calls! ( I still remember uni)
Yup. It's really good. This is the last of it though. :(
Don't eat goats!
it's a bit too late for that, gavin... ;)
Is it paella for Spain, then? :)
They speak volumes, so they do.
I would volunteer, but regrettably I am not unemployed elsewhere at the moment...
Yeah I know :(
Likely. Also possibly some chorizo pork thing.
Not even Brian the pet goat?
Mmmm... Yum yum! :D Maybe I should have a Spanish-themed dinner too - it's easy to have them here. :)
Especially not the pet goat - and one with a name too!
My friend has a farm, and the cows are called Daisy, Tinkerbell, and Freezer Pack :D
Freezer Pack - now there's a name fit for a cow! :D
:D
My parents once bought and raised a couple of turkeys. Called them Christmas Day and Boxing Day - also bought them an advent calendar.
Mmmm yum, tinkerbell
...And my sister-in-law owns a farm, but they're not farmers so they rent out their fields.
The Payment? A slaughtered pig. Mmm, the rent tasted very good this year! We literally threw money in the fire!
Hey guys, back from my last benefit meeting :D
cool, who did it benefit?
Me, got my final £100 jobseekers allowance go through before I start my new job. :D
Oh and I know about Macca's 3 race ban. Got it through Autosport Text.
they got a 3 race ban??
Yeah, it's on Autosport right now? Haven't you seen it yet?!
Cool, you got the call centre job then?
Here ya are:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74937
Yup :)
SUSPENDED BAN.
I repeat, SUSPENDED ban.
:D
see i read:
"McLaren has been given a suspended three-race ban"
Time for bed. Happy in the knowledge my team will be there next race, and with filepe baby ringing in my mind :-). See yas all.
SUSPENDED 3-race ban. The word 'suspended' makes all the difference. :)
night paul.
or rather, pauli. sorry!
Meh, a ban's a ban. When will they take it, that's the question?
Yes - that word makes all the difference. You should've seen our reaction - first thing we heard was that it was a 3-race ban! The word suspended came 5 minutes later. ;)
they won't.
What are you on today?
They'll only take it if more facts about lie-gate come out that will incriminate them, or if they have a repeat offense. The suspended ban can be imposed anytime within the next 12 months (so up to the end of April 2010).
:D
Yup - they can't be THAT stupid. They'll be more careful - they should be very thankful that they basically got off the hook.
agreed.
Whatever, we know where they stand now.
Just wondering now how the FIA are going to screw them now to get them that 3 race ban...
Nah, they won't do that. As I've said before, Lewis is allied with Max now, and they don't want Merc to leave. They'll just let New McLaren be.
mandy's getting in on the silverstone action now:
"The Daily Telegraph reports that business secretary Lord Mandelson has sought a personal reassurance about the race’s future from Formula 1’s commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone."
Yes – in deep merde!
I'd love to believe that - but I can't.
The WMSC basically said that Ron is to blame for everything and now he's gone, all is good. Ron being gone will certainly help McLaren to an extent, but not that much at all.
i like them more in his absence. maybe max does too?
The FIA has been a paragon of common sense lately - what with the diffuser ruling, and then Whitmarsh. Something must be amiss! :P
But seriously, I really do think it was a Ron Dennis thing more than it was a McLaren thing that bothered Max no end. And there must be a reason Lewis approached Max and they bonded and Max told him not to be stupid and to stay at McLaren.
Ron said Max wouldn't be displeased with him leaving.
Another double negative! :D
The 'Felipe Baby' Autosport thread is starting to liven up!
stormshadow thinks...
well said! :)
But they didn't get off the hook.
The do have that suspended bad hanging over their head - And they were disqualified from the Aus GP (loosing a 3rd place finish)
I like Ron. He seems like a perfectionist.
considering what they did... that is getting off the hook.
lying to the stewards. and then being recalled a week later and sticking to their lies in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?
But as long as stay behaved, that punishment won't matter. And true, they were DSQed in Melbourne, but I'm referring to the punishment they may have received today (race ban, further points deduction, fine) but didn't get.
Picked up The Simpsons Game for X360 in Game for £15 :D
agreed.
i haven't forgiven him for the pearly-white overalls required in post-race press conferences yet.
What's with the fellow beating his head against the wall? Surely (axiomatically, even) that's what you're doing by entering into a discussion on that forum in the first place?
:D :D
:D
:D :D :D
Isn't it just a jacket? I quite like that kind of attention to detail and the message it sends to the sponsors.
That's a valid point. But I'd argue that, taken as a whole, this is a good decision for F1. The potential damage to the sport outweighed whatever advantage was to be gained by handing down a stiff punishment. A draconian ruling would have brought F1 to the attention of the outside world (by which I mean TV news and the front pages of newspapers worldwide) in an entirely negative fashion.
So far as said outside world is concerned, this is a very boring story that was done and dusted a month ago. Revisiting it serves only to reinforce the notion that F1 is a very silly and arbitrary sport, and not worth spending time and money on.
There is a time and a place to score points against people you don't like; and, wouldn't you know, Boris Johnson recently wrote a column on those sort of lines...
http://tinyurl.com/dxamrt
the drivers look sweaty (or in jarno's instance, half-dead), and they sit there in gleaming white overalls like they have turned a wheel all day?
some might consider that being 'lied' to.
What do you know, or read into the punishment, that I don't?
A suspended ban seems like a slap on the wrist to me, but given McLaren's recent propensity for trouble, it may be the FIA's way of saying 'you put the screws on us this time so we couldn't lay into you, but we will get you...soon!'
It made the Sports Tonight news here in Sydney.
VERY interesting article... A straight-shooter, the Mayor of London is.
i agree. a sensible decision from the wmsc. i think if this happened two years ago the penalty would've been different. thanks to the economy and various other factors mclaren have gotten away with it though.
on the other hand, if the team are now playing music in the paddock instead of moaning about how loudly renault play music in the paddock. it's all been worthwhile. i guess it's a shame it took so much controversy to get them there.
that said, that wouldn't have happened had ron dennis still been around.
so who's left from the old guard (aside from B&M)? only williams and head now?
Nowt – just my (feeble) attempt at a joke.
Can't wait to get my hands on that iPod again. Only got as far as 'B' last time...
Evening, folks!
Hey, Sean. Seen the news?
:D
ahh, it was that ipod. interesting.
Yeah, it's a tad soft ain't it? ;)
Nah, jokes, it's probably the best outcome for the sport.
I pretty much thought it was THAT iPod the moment I read about it.
Haha :-) Its kind of like a defendant wearing a suit to court. It shows respect even though it's (usually) obvious to all what the reality is.
have i ever mentioned how good philips shavers are?
must've been at least 6 months.
That very subject came up at the tail end of this R4 comedy show...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007mjjg
That game was fun, reagardless of what super awesome prize you could win.
meh, we've been digging up way to much from the archives. I say too much...
Afternoon all. Out new? Aside from the McLaren thing, we aren't mistaking it for the pram company lying to competitors are we? Cos I never saw the FIA being that soft (waits for next person to explain joke has already been said)
Sorry for being 'that' guy, but I don't know what you're referring to.
Stuart was telling us about it before, can't quite remember when it was, though.
Help, anyone?
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/70661
Gah! I can't enter that Williams competition! I'm to tall...
evening all. Turns out waiting for WMSC verdicts is easy when you fall asleep at 6pm and wake up at midnight.
I'm sure it would be.
:D To be fair, it was released a lot earlier than any of us thought it would be. More to come this afternoon - this time, concerning the 2010 regs and THAT budget cap.
The FIA are probably doing their usual 'terrible decision we hope will be ignored by the media because they'll be talking about McLaren' tactic, like how the budget caps were pretty much ignored when first mentioned because everyone was freaking out over the most-wins thing.
Such a nice friendly place to be :-) Thanks you!
If that was their intent, then surely they were better off handing McLaren a harsher punishment? As Alia said, at least they could offload the blame onto McLaren for that.
I think there's a message in that for all of us, don't you :P
thats true
PS. Amazing memories in this place
bucks fizz will do that to you!
max says we'll hear details about the budget cap decision tomorrow:
"He added that the details would be published on Thursday."
It looks like that is all over bar the shouting - in this case, it's just a matter of how much, really.
I just watched Letterman and he had Dolly Parton performing Back Woods Barbie. Very funny song and performance. If you need a laugh...
"It's a little bit more than 30 million but we have been successful"
anyone fancy speculating?
double that and you've got yourself a deal!
He'll find that there comes a time for making your mind up (so to speak).
:D
Does he work on GMT +10 time? Or release stuff at 00:01 AM? I have to go to bed now so hopefully I'll wake up to information.
Sounds like the new cocktails are fancier than that...
Anyone like to guess how long it will be before Bernie is claiming that he cancelled the north America races because of swine flu?
He's crazy, but not THAT crazy. :P
More love for Felipe Baby:
http://www.thescuderia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=24337
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12511/900/
I'd like to point out that he'll be defining the Rules of the game. But that would make me Cooper-esque in my Fizz knowledge.
He also ran teams that twice had their driver ram another driver to try to clinch a championship. Had the same driver park in Monaco to stop Alnso taking pole. It was a team with Brawn pulling strings that invented the concept of a driver being blocked aerodynamically.
Brawn is less than squeaky clean as are both his previous teams and many others on the grid
A ringtone??????
It was illegal to have the traction control/launch control on the car. Whether it was used or not is entirely irrelevant. Read any of the magazines at that time about how Schumcaher with a Ford could pass Williams with far superior Renault engines off the line. Nigel Roebuck many times wrote about the odd noises Schumacher's engine made that no other car on the grid did. They ran those illegal systems.
Ignoring flag signals is a serious breach of sadety protocol and far worse than lying to stewards. No-one has ever died in a stewards room of a lie.
The Schumacher debate is perfectly relevant. Mclaren are portrayed as a team the repeatedly cheats but compared to Benetton/Renault which is effectively the same team they are lily white.
Hahaha! Amazing what people would do with it.
Even the Ferrari folk at F1Network love it:
http://www.f1network.net/boards/read/s85.htm?85,10445896
True, the TC was found. Yet they were never convicted of any charges?
It is relevant, true, but we've gone through all the points so many times. Is there anything new to bring up?
it's 3 minutes long? wouldn't the person calling be somewhat annoyed?
...i'm just waiting for the gorrilla reference.
Hahahahaha! Maybe he'll just use the gorilla suit line? Makes me melt every time... :D
Looks like Christine will have to do an album. Requests on the comments for a Kimi song and one about Lewis and his dad. One of the talented musical people round here must be able to do one about Lewis and his dad.
An album! I like it! :D :D :D
I vote for a reworking of 'just the two of us'
Oooh... she'd have to rearrange that song to make it work for her. A guy sang that, with a lower note.
Just looked at the comments now - 40 comments? Impressive.
I just did a search for felipe baby song. OMG it is everywhere
hahaha! yup, i was shocked when i saw that. 'hit single' is fast becoming an appropriate term.
:D Better than any national anthem
The autosport forum seem to have responded well to that post
Davey Ryan is the real loser in this. The guy did nothing that dozens of others haven't done before and would not have been sackd by any other team. I hope he got a good pay off.
Very well, in fact - great reactions to it on TWO threads! :)
So let me get this straight, Christine has inadvertadly created the latest internet sensation. It'll soon turn into something like 'Felipe Roll' or something
Hahaha! Sidepodcast's very first meme, I think. :) We need to make sure Felipe and Rob get to listen to this. We MUST! :D
You watch, this'll be all over the news soon :D
Bernie and Mandy in the same room. Every time you shook hands with either of them you would check to make sure you still had your watch
The other way you could interpret this is that the FIA has become more sensible after Max's hobby became public. When the fine was issued all the headlines were about how evil McLaren were whereas now the headlines would be along the lines of Pervert Mosley punishes F1 team.
Or it could simply be that Ron is gone and Max is friends with Lewis now.
The humour-free brigade must be taking the day off...
:D
I think now would seem a fair time to mention that I have more comments on this site than anyone praising Philips shavers
ahh, but i ask you. has anyone yet set up a website in appreciation of the song?
so far...
Where's Alex when you need him?
Alex, Mr C wants us to set up a website! :D
You just wait till it appears on F1 Racing then it'll be 'Christine and page 17'
nooooooo!
Now who's wishing they kept there mouth shut? ;)
It is too late - Pandora's Box has been unlocked, the genie let out of the bottle. ;)
There seem to be a lot of people who are prepared to constantly point out McLaren's failings with the assumption that no-one else in F1 has ever had as much as a parking ticket. Schumacher and co provide a good background against which to judge other offenders as they got away with so much.
hahahaha :)
Me and my shadow
Surely, Alex must be thinking of it right now... :D
I think me can hold on to his special honour for a bit longer no?
Ron is only gone on paper.
that's not what the paddock ipod says.
That's true to a certain extent, but doesn't he trust Martin enough to let him take on the reins on his own?
thanks you.
:D
*Mr C breathes a sigh of relief.*
Is someone going to dial up 'Return of the Mac' at some point, do you think?
That is bad. But give me a minute and I will come up with something worse
*waves*
everyone everyone :)
Presumably that would be: Da Doo Ron Ron
Afternoon!
...hiya everyone, even. Thats an amazing start.
Hey Lukeh! Have you realized what a phenomenon Felipe Baby the single has become? :D
Really? I saw an article this morning about it I think... but I can barely remember what I was doing before my dinner (I had PIE!)... but I'm not surprised, it's a fantastic song by Christine! :D
Hey everyone. Still at work but nothing to do, I'm bored to tears. Pub to look forward to afterwards though, apparently some football is happening tonight?
I just keep thinking about the last line of Mac the Knife or wondering whether Ron's favourite would be a whiter shade of pale.
Of course Lewis theme song for the Barcelona race now I suppose is I've Got a Silver Machine
It's all over the forums - even called a 'hit single'. Unbelievable. :)
Apparently, there's this team from Manchester and this team from London that will be having a friendly game of footy. ;)
Vettel and Webber will be Bulls on Parade if they win in Barcelona.
So I heard. Manchester Town and Arsenal United I think.
Ooh, hope BBC think of that. That would be an ace montage!
BUUULLS ON PARAAAADE! :D
No! I think it's Manchester City and Chelsea. :D
*rages against the machine*
Epic idea!
Or how about: I shot the Dennis, but I did not shoot the deputy
ummmm
eh?
that was my thought.
trying to get lou to do the ironing?
Toro Rosso are Tori sulla Parata :D
Now that's just silly...
ah-ha!
More a toaster too: http://www.firewirestudios.co.uk/project_images/gp_toaster.html
this brawn mania is a little erm... strange....
hey btw :) am around a little atm, just doing some textiles :)
i iron... for textiles :D
Wow thats... quite something
Although I do really want the toaster.
do they work? the bigger pics appear to have status LED's?
Evening all. :)
I see Christine has worked her way into the music industry now. :P
OH NO!
They are CGI believe it or not!
You thought you had escaped? :D
Well that's my mind blown
why ruin a good pic with functionality?
another one! :D :D
i... really... did...
Yep - and what an entrance! :D
they are!.... wow.
Apparently made using CINEMA 4D and Vray For C4D.
By a chap called Chris LaBrooy
I didn't upload it to drop.io though... Who did?
When asked, "are you really sure that diffuser complies with the 1984 International bread heating device regulations, §15:a?"
He replied... "Yes this diffuser design meets all proper regulations and has been approved by the FIA. Forthcoming aero updates may accommodate a sculpted toast rack."
So talented and a sense of humour. Grrrr!
Just preparing for my second post on Greatest Racing Eras about the mighty Group B.
What happened on BATracer??
Q1 - Both Toyotas through in second and third.
Q2 - Both Toyotas crashed??
Grrr...
I know. Bloomin irritatin, bet you and I were on course for q3 as well.
Assuming we didn't crash into each other of course
I would have been on pole too if it weren't for that meddling Lou...
It's great having a brilliantly fast teammate :D
So.... Christine is a pop star now? What have I missed?
Alanis Morissette would probably describe that as ironic.
This has made me think...
We have Phillips sponsoring Williams...
Why not Braun sponsoring Brawn?
:D !!!
mwhahaha :P
I could have been on pole too! I blame all the cars that went faster...
How dare you take it by 6 thousandths!
;)
Title sponsor perhaps? :D
Here's a dilemma though - Valencia: KERS or no KERS? It's a street circuit, yes, but there's a couple of high speed sections.
Oh dear lord, get this:
http://www.anliker-ueli.ch/index.php/bilderwelt
Must dash. Been summoned to pub.
MY EYES!!!
yay!!! My car has arrived *dances around*
Ooh! What is it? :D
:o awesome!
tis a little VW urban fox :)
As in the ones they played car football in on TG?
erm... possibly... i'll post a pick in drop.io in a sec
Yes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIeu7_-iwdw
That is the ultimate example of money not buying good taste. Conspicuous consumption in extremis.
Gold plated crocodile skin? Who dreamt that up?
Congrats you. One little piece of driving advice. Don't crash it. Hope that helps.
So, is it going to get a respray in white with black and flourescent yellow striping, and I *heart* Jenson and Rubens? ;)
don't crash you say? would never have thought of that ;) lol thanks i'm sure that will be useful :D
Ooohhhhh, you DON'T crash them. Now you tell me...
The most stupid sentence ever in a GMM story?
"One solution to the swine flu crisis for formula one would be to stage grands prix without spectators in the stands."
is it friday?
very helpful advice. Obviously the likes of Piquet and Nakajima didn't get such help.
What about the pitcrews and the drivers? Ridiculous...
There was never enough interest in sponsoring/financing the teams, and then the economy tanked.
Me neither, 2 hours is too long for me while I'm doing college. I'm still downloading them and hope to catch up, although that might not be until I'm through the exams by which time they'll be so old I'll be skipping through them like crazy.
is that bernie's excuse for malaysia, china and bahrain?
Maybe I should be an F1 driver coach. Shame Sato and Dc are not around any more. I coulda been rich.
What about the fat there has been no-one in the satnds for the last few races.
could be. haha! :)
Watching 90s WWE on JTV. Good stuff. :)
Did one person eat the rest?
hehe :)
Do you seriously think at team would run an illegal car without knowing? {Comment #129}
Yes. Ask Toyota about Melbourne. If they were going to put on an overly-flexible wing on purpose, you'd have thought they'd have checked that their legal wing wasn't quicker beforehand!
No, Godzilla ate them all. ;)
I just realised it is quiz night. I missed it last week but I am going to be around tonight.
Damn, damn and triple damn.
didn't mark my scores last week. it's a conspiracy i tell ye.
Aw dang - missing it again. Must sleep earlier if I want to take part in it next time...
I'd say darn, darn, and triple darn.
You can get 2 hours sleep and still make it
I deny any bribary involved in the quiz...
Don't think I can make it tonight. :(
I have a 50-50 chance of waking up. We shall see. :) Good night. ;)
Good night
night journeyer.
Night Journeyer. :)
Night Mr Journeyer
night!
doesn’t discourage anyone else from lying to the stewards in future mind you. {Comment #166}
Unless a team has some special reason for wanting to throw away the race result for whichever event they lie at, I can't see any team being so blatant about it again.
Subterfuge is another matter.
oo... erm... *thinks* i'd certainly be able to find it :P
Lunch and the canteen is closed! CLOSED! {Comment #221}
That's ridiculous! I've heard of the canteen having only two types of sandwich (and about a dozen varieties of flapjack) available by lunch*, but shutting the canteen altogether? How do they expect students to eat?
* - There was a lecturer's strike going on and the place had overestimated the reduction in demand.
By the way, I am currently attempting to edit my Script Frenzy play. Never imagined getting it into stage format would be such a nightmare.
'Father and Son'?
ok, have finished running around the car and squelling and have taken a picture of it :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lous-car-jpg
so.... not.... jealous...
Time for Pimp Lou's Ride. ;)
I'd go in the opposite direction.
Be very worried.
so who’s left from the old guard (aside from B&M)? only williams and head now? {Comment #289}
I believe this makes Flavio Briatore the longest-serving head of a Formula 1 team currently serving (having started in 1988), if you ignore the fact that he missed two-and-a-half seasons in the late 1990s.
I still can't get my head round his becoming the new old guard...
PLF quiz at 8.30, right?
Naughty Jolly? .. be afraid .. Maverick is hosting the quiz tonight, :D
Ooh looks lovely :D
It is indeed
I'd best grab some dinner
I will endeavour to be there. :-) Depends how much or how little of this practice paper I've done. Did most of the one yesterday, this other one I need to do all of. It's supposed to be do-able in 2hrs so that should work okay depending on how long I take out for food...
Tim 'Drob the bomb' Westwood is worse than anything I could do to it. ;)
Anyone like to guess how long it will be before Bernie is claiming that he cancelled the north America races because of swine flu? {Comment #325}
He won't. For him, it's all about the money. Since the North American races won't pay him what he wants, the flu is irrelevant.
Ugh, THAT man... it's like the MTV version of THAT woman.
man so unpopular, he had to arrange his own drive by shooting... *allegedly...*
it’s 3 minutes long? wouldn’t the person calling be somewhat annoyed? {Comment #334}
You could do an edited version - perhaps with one verse. That would give you a decent-length ringtone.
wow!
genius :)
If he was that unpopular would he really need to arrange it though?
flibster, how'd you manage to get that funky character before the word "man"?
trying to repeat it but i can't and it breaks lclt :(
The most stupid sentence ever in a GMM story?
“One solution to the swine flu crisis for formula one would be to stage grands prix without spectators in the stands.” {Comment #447}
Something similar was proposed in 2001 as a worst-case scenario for the British Grand Prix. The small number of people participating means that it is relatively straightforward to impose the relevant testing and biohazard protection measures.
More likely is that it will go ahead as normal, but if swine flu does threaten the race, you can bet Bernie will try to get the corporate people at least...
I'm special. :D
No idea - using the DDv2
that you are sir ;)
Maybe I should be an F1 driver coach. Shame Sato and Dc are not around any more. I coulda been rich. {Comment #454}
The question is - can you get an F1 driver to listen to you? Last I heard (admittedly via the August 2007 edition of F1 Racing), there was a lot of resistance to coaching of any kind, to the point where it was inhibiting drivers' progress.
*quiets eats cornetto as tumbleweed rolls past* :P
*Trips over tumbleweed in attempt to gain response*
thank the lord. it took me an hour to catch up with comments that had been left while i was sleeping.
it's a full-time job keeping up!
:D
Cornetto update: I have eaten it now :(
Live commenting a cornetto?
Mr C this might upset you greatly...
...but in my constant attempt to push the development envelope I was trying to look at the doohicky on my wii! ;)
Despite being Oprah 9 it doesn't seem to work so well... It keeps polling like it's going off for the page but it never fills the middle section with comments :(
Evening all. Not read the comments yet, but glad that the McLaren thing is all over.
Also, if Daimler made £3bn last year and lost £2bn this, doesn't that mean they still have £1bn left?
Finally, anyone who wants to see the JYS documentary, please email me for details. andy at ajtaylor dot com.
why would you do such a thing? why?
will investigate.
It's a surprise :)
hopefully they have more than that. problem is, this year isn't going to be any easier.
thanks.
Presumably, it doesn't reflect how much money they have, it just shows that last year they could bring in 3bn, and this year it is minus three and minus another two. Which isn't good news, really.
*quiets eats cornetto as tumbleweed rolls past* {Comment #505}
:D
I'm still trying to get my script edited into the correct format. Tomorrow morning, I expect to officially finish - about 12 hours before time.
Then I can reward myself by listening to the ForceCast and F1 Rejects podcast for Bahrain...
I could finish that.
If April ended when May did or I could actually do 50 pages in a day.
In unrelated news, got tickets for Cardiff in June. Woo
don't know if this is correct, but on the autosport forum thread for felipe baby:
"BBC Tees played the first verse to Rob Smedley this afternoon."
linkage
If only, if only I was one BBC Local Radio service south.
omg, am just listening to it. they really did play the song to rob. will try and drop.io in a moment.
*stunned*
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p002vzm0/Lisa_McCormick_29_04_2009/
Apparently on iplayer now
you HAVE to listen.
*Faints, gets back up, and faints again*
:o
wow!!
The song is taking over the world. Does Christine have an agent yet?
rob smedley:
"i think it's nice"
they're gonna forward the whole track to him later.
awww!! awesome!! how amazing! :)
Rob hearts Christine
:) :) :) :)
Biggest shout out evah!
Who suggested posting it on the forum...
Autosport forum rules!
rob smedley seriously heard it? :o
i did it because that's how we got onto page 22.
they really rule!
yup.
That's brilliant! :D
that. is. awesome!!!
:)
:)
Where is Christine?
In a darkened room?
NO. FREAKIN. WAY! :D
Sidepodcast is one step closer to world domination :D
crying, i think :)
Note to Mrs C, when you get all rich and famous with all your royalites. Remember us poor lot and where you roots lie. Don't forget who you once loved ;)
With joy or with fear?
yep, and if she manages to get jenson's number... just remember where i am :P
Won't let me download that show at the moment to mp3. Working on it though. ;)
Plus - I refuse to install realplayer *spit*
Remember, before he get to high on the celebration bubbly. The quiz is on tonight.
Feel free to continue drinking, only help me to win more.
same position :(
I do have Realplayer Alternative though. ;)
I have real player and it still won't play. Real player insists it needs an update then tells me I am not connected to the internet.
Ooh, the quiz!
Me too. Am waiting for drop.io...
Oooops. I appear to have broken iplayer...
Just clicked play and it came up with the save to box... ;)
That is so annoying
...and intentional. ;)
Can anyone tell me at what time in the show it happens?
1:50
The quiz is about to start
am gonna have to skip this weeks.
So from 1:45 to 1:55 should cover it then.
go to the news at 2 if i were you.
I HATE editing realmedia files...
hehe.
i hate realplayer. and the bbc for using it.
That's why I use WMP instead.
i hate that equally.
Easier to rip the streams though and edit too.
Realplayer is a pain in the bum in all ways and also has horrible software to go with it.
can't beat quicktime :)
Not wanting to stir it or anything but RG just said he was very happy Mr C wasn't at the quiz to see his embarrassment. Just saying.
You can - with a big stick with a nail through it.
Quicktime is nearly as bad as Realplayer
:D It's hilarious
i will not hear of such a thing.
Shhh. Dont.Say.Anything
LMAO :D
I don't have Quicktime installed on my machines either. Just the codec's and a few registry settings to allow me to download the videos and then convert them to a proper format. ;)
It's not quite as bad as realplayer...
yeah true. quite annoying all the same.
All edited - now converting...
cheers sir.
:D
Scratch that - need to redownload the converter, forgot that I uninstalled it a while ago.
Will take a few minutes - it's on the work server.
Wow that's brilliant :-)
We're now try to guess which team runs which car by looking at parts of whited out 2009 cars. Bit tough.
i get the impression rob didn't really want reminding about it, but the presenter loved it :)
Ah, looks like my chat window crashed. It is still there but it isn't working. Reloading.
i know them so far :P
Ouch - need to change that a bit - 197mb mp3.
Errrr...
how?
If you don't comment it doesn't update as often. Look at the little square next to your name and if it is not green post a comment and it will start uploading every five seconds
Grrr... Verifying Script Frenzy victories is really hard when the Script Frenzy site refuses to load. Grrr...
generated a 5.1 mp3 @ a silly bitrate.
Trying to. I press submit and nothing happens.
:)
Ah bum I forgot about the quiz...
Best thing to do then is shut it down and open in a new window. If you miss any questions let us know.
I could finish that.
If April ended when May did or I could actually do 50 pages in a day. {Comment #519}
Not to worry - the point is that you tried. You just happened to get stuck in with a different (Sidepodcast) script and real life.
In unrelated news, got tickets for Cardiff in June. Woo {Comment #519}
Congratulations!
Based on this, probably.
https://www.eyestorm.com/images/works/12217_zoomimage.jpg
2mb - much better file size
Drop.io'd the bit about the song - will do the whole interview later.
cheers sir.
At the start of that clip Rob didn't sound remotely amused but he changed his tune completely by the end.
must do a post about this later.
Erm, does drop.io not work on the new doohickey or something, cos all I'm getting is a white box?
Works here
Hmm, odd, took a while to load up.
She made it onto the Beeb! Wowow! Haha! :)
must do a post about this later. {Comment #600}
At this rate, it might be worth your while registering the song with the PRO or a similar organisation and uploading it to iTunes to see if you can get the song on the charts!
I just heard it too. Amazing! You reckon he's gonna play it to Felipe himself? :D
for the second time though ;)
i think he'll bury it under a rock!
I was thinking that, actually... It's gotten a proper cult following. :) But she already made it available for free, so I think it's too late for this.
Won't this end up in some massive court appearance between spc and the tune of whartever it was called?
At first, I was thinking he might not... but that sultry voice may swing it. ;)
do ya think we should put it in the podcast feed?
I've had enough of C++ it is just so frustrating. :(
So what's going on :D
Remix
Yes.
Felipe?
Sounds sensible. Possibly score more points this year. ;)
Absolutely
Hmm, get some voiceover for it
'With internet acclaimed praise from Autosport, F1 Technical and BBC Local Radio, I present, Felipe Baby'
May I go and hide there too please?
Yes.
Famous people don't hide under rocks! :P
Absolutely yes!
No.
Live performance please. :D
But she already made it available for free, so I think it’s too late for this. {Comment #609}
Not really - the point of registering with the PRO in this case would not be to collect fees, but to enable statistics of its downloads to count towards the chart. There's no rule that says that UK download singles have to be paid for, as long as they went through a channel such as iTunes or last.fm that tallies downloads in a way that the chart compilers accept.
Santa Baby - written in 1953, so still in copyright. I'm sure me knows how to make sure the relevant clearance has been obtained.
As the song is a parody hosted in the US, it's probably protected by the first amendment. :)
If you are going to be a star you can't hide. SPC is not going to last long if you are both anonymous
They do if they don't want to be famous.
:D Too true.
I've officially won Script Frenzy! Yay! :D
Hmmm... Makes sense, that...
Too late, dear - you're a star now! :D
Hehe. I think it's too late though.
Yay. Go Alia, that is no mean feat, congratulations on doing it :D
Full 8 minute interview now uploading.
Flibster, you rock! Today shall forever be known as 'Felipe Baby' day.
feed updated.
Nope.
So we've had Newhickey Day and now Felipe Baby Day - what next? :D
Me thinks Christine will be attempting to hide on the live feed come Sunday's debrief...
Well done you
Will plug on mi'blog later, although I hardly compare to the Beeb radio, and Autosport forum.
jackie, lou, methinks you've got a killer question for this Sunday... :D
After all, 'tis Ladies Night! ;)
I dunno if Christine would approve of that...
Find Christine :D
Wow. Google Felipe Baby and you get quite a few links to other forums, some not even F1 related:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13974907
Full interview with Rob now on drop.io
I think Christine will need some sunglasses.
wow!!
I know that place - there is a fairly large F1 following there.
I used to do the F1 updates there - until the abuse and death threats became too much.
cheers flibster. have you read this tweet:
http://twitter.com/lisamccormick/statuses/1652295777
And a large hat. Maybe she could ask Kimi if she can borrow his?
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I may incriminate myself..
;)
Rob will love the whole song when he hears it.
christine - if it wasn't one a while ago, it's definitely a 'hit single' now!
Now all we need to do is to get people to talk about it in the paddock. ;)
Presuming he does actually listen to all of it.
Does the guy have a blog?? :P
'Y'see, this may take longer than 140 characters'
I think I'd be safe betting Christine hopes he doesn't.
Just think - if this actually becomes a story on Autosport.com, who knows what could happen next...
Nothing will happen next.
:D
The aim is to get this to become a 'Paddock Life' story. ;)
Don't worry Christine, I'm sure Mr C is very proud of you. :)
You are going to do nothing after the album?
Who said anything about an album?
It'll be an interesting story, perhaps in Paddock Life as Journeyer said, then it'll fade away.
UNLESS we do soemthing about it :-)
the word journeyer, is jealous.
Where's your song then?
Yay. Go Alia, that is no mean feat, congratulations on doing it :D {Comment #633}
Thank you, RG, me and Steven. It was surprisingly smooth running apart from the week when I typed nothing at all due to a particularly tough plot knot (being unemployed has its advantages).
This is a really great day for the Sidepodcast community, between this and Christine's singing :)
Uh oh. Domestic brewing at SPC towers (again).
...like a website, maybe? :) Or better yet, another song? :D
Has Page 22 been outdone? :)
Congrats, Alia!
But how can we hold up a song?
:D :D
I gave him an idea - he's got the accent for it.
nooooooooo.
:D
I got a brand new combine harvester?
the reason i'm jealous is because i cannot sing.
I'm allowed to say this because I'm wescountry too
"They called him Bernie and he ran the fastest team sport in the west"
"Bernie the fastest Mogul in the west" doesn't need to be sung as such. It's more sprechen spiel
excellent :-)
What about an F1 version of "The Devil went down to Georgia"? :D
Who said anything about an album? {Comment #666}
Maybe we could all do a song related to F1 and Sidepodcast could mix and release them to raise money for its excellent work in entertaining and informing the supporters of F1 :)
I've got an acoustic guitar, keyboard and MIDI software if anyone needs a mediocre-but-original backing track for their contribution...
'The Bernie went down to UAE'
That sounds like a really good idea. Hey, it wouldn't just be Christine that's the star - we'd all be sharing the limelight :D
I'm not a star.
The Bernie went east to Abu Dhabi...
you're a very naughty girl?
Get a room?
Oh, Christine, no point being in denial. Hehehe.
YOU WERE ON THE BBC! How can you NOT be a star? :P
Has Page 22 been outdone? :)
nooooooooo. {Comment #678}
How about a page where we hold Page 22 in one hand and a copy of the "Felipe Baby" lyrics in the other?
(This may make setting up the camera interesting, but never mind...)
Ewww, RG!
that line doesn't work for women does it? damn.
I said nothing, I hate people who accuse me of nothing ;)
:D
No. :D Still, too.much.information.
Considering Pat said it, i aint lying
the reason i’m jealous is because i cannot sing. {Comment #681}
Given your love of anonymity, being a singer might not have been the ideal musical talent for you to possess anyway. Computer music, on the other hand, makes it easy for you to hide your face behind the computer and still be really creative.
He could perform in a panda suit?
it'd be like the wombles on totp.
Pandabadozie would be a great stage name
heheh i'm watching the quiz questions atm. am loving q23 :D
Ah ha! Now we know - me was in the Wombles.
I’m not a star. {Comment #690}
Stardom is the will of the people. Your modesty on the matter is preferable to the navel-gazing practised by many stars and "stars" :)
am i that old? damn i might just be.
Not taking part? And are you in disguise?
You have to do an album
nope i'm not taking part... wish i was cause i've found some of the questions easier than usual. but am doing textiles and other revision atm and couldn't really afford to give up the time to take part properly :( am lurking though
I think we are all in agreement with that...
He could perform in a panda suit? {Comment #703}
That helps too :)
I can't either, but I am... :-) Will do a quick 1h30m burn shortly, and I have more time tomorrow to finish it off. King of the last minute..
Last question left for the quiz :)
Of course you are
Well I'm not old enough, so I'm sure you aren't.
Agreed.
Scott, back up to 2nd! And RG's back in the standings!
* Journeyer (3078)
* Scott Woodwiss (2544)
* Lukeh (2420)
* Steven Roy (2327)
* RG (2291)
I wish I could stick to that as well as you do :( I told myself i WILL start my assignment tonight, i've layed down, watched tele, been sick, read magazines and done 3 crosswords in the time I should've been writting up work...
Whoops. Strange evening. :(
OMG! Yay! :D
Well I say you are, and I should know I've followed a few. :)
*claps scott* back where he wanted to be :)
Yikes.
I am revising, I definatly am revising
hehe :)
Still got a way to go to catch Journeyer, but he's away soon so that gives me time to close the gap substantialy :D
Eep? :D
I wish I could stick to that as well as you do :( I told myself i WILL start my assignment tonight, i’ve layed down, watched tele, been sick, read magazines and done 3 crosswords in the time I should’ve been writting up work… {Comment #720}
Oh no :( ! Hope you get well soon and find the assignment unexpectedly easy when you get round to doing it.
I'm doing a Lou here.
wow... i've actually dropped off the top 5 list.. *is in shock* so there's no female commenter in the top 5... come on jackie! keep posting ;)
It was supposed to be Friday but amazingly... as I speak I've just got an email saying it has a 2 weeks extension...
which has taken a load off my shoulders... :)
3 days in fact - but I realized something.
I'll be out May 1-3, but I was ALSO out April 1-3 - heck, I was out April 1-7! So good luck to ya, Scott. ;)
I usually got told about an extension the day after I'd finished the assignment.
in what why? cause i was revising! and still am... i just, commented alot during the races...
Top 3 commenters Press conference
"Well getting back to 2nd place in the top 5 commenters is a real achievement. It took a lot of typing, arguing and point making but we've got there and it's a great feeling. Just got to thank my laptop and BT for the internet connection - without them, none of this would have been possible."
;)
Me too, see ya in 2hrs.
You missed "for sure"
"Bloody hell."
Follow the shoe
*way .... wow... i am more tired than i thought...
Oh, for sure. My apologies on that, for sure. ;)
Also, you're thanking BT?
you didn't say for sure! it's not a proper press conference! :P
ban him.
...yeah, that doesn't sound right, does it?
oh... and i should learn to read comments before typing... i'll just go back to textiles now.
Come on now, let's be rational about this... :D
There was no need for that...
He laughed at me when in the quiz, why shall not be discussed, but thanking BT, baaaaaan him.
how about a 3 race suspended ban? :P
He's beating me at the lap challenge by a suspicious amount. Baaaaaan hiiiiim!
Sooo, that was some good revision ;)
agreed. scott, consider yourself on a warning.
"On further consideration, this would have been entirely possible without BT so screw them. Can I have my Magnum now?...Well why did you leave it out......well it's gonna get all melted now......no don't stick it back in, there's no point...."
From live commenting?
"Scott baby, stay cool... we'll get you a new Magnum." :P
i'm doing textiles! i'm doing it!! i'm doing it! but it's possible to sew and follow comments at the same time.... although i have a mock tomorrow....
:D BT Internet are one of the few companies I have ever lost my temper with thanks to them cancelling the company ADSL 3 days after it was installed.
"I know but this one is all melted and I cannot eat it."
*jumps back into silent mode*
Must write up something possibly blog-worthy..
Oooh nasty, good luck even if its only a mock
How??
How can somebody do that??
That reminds me, I've still got a post on Group B to finish!
It's times like this I wish it wasn't a family forum :D
:D
hehe :D
a it's a history mock :( the last one for the other history topic i did on monday went very very very wrong... i ended up writing about things that happened in ww1 in russia in a question about ww2 in russia :( bad times. thanks though :)
Oooh... history! My favorite subject when I was in school. :D
Just listening to Rob. Massa was going to win China? How many Magnum's has he had?
what sew and watch comments?... it's pretty easy tbh.. sewing can get dull if your not doing something to keep you occupied :)
Right, am currently doing history coursework about China and the events in 1989 and communism in general.
Brainfreeze?
i liked it before this year... sooo much information, i swear it's like i've learnt nothing all year :( psychology is going much better though.
Ooooh... Tiananmen? That was Deng Xiaoping's darkest hour. Other than that, he was worlds better than Mao at governing.
1989? History? I feel old.
20 years ago this year...
That is scary.
My History GCSE in 1996 (favourite subject) was "World History Since 1914" and it went up to 1991.
Ah, maybe it's just because I can't sew or do more than 1 thing at a time...
Shhh.
in last years course we studied the history of medicine right up to 2000 i think. that was scary :)
2009 is China, local history (all about Segdunum if you've ever heard about it), American West and Medicine through time.
RG i've just noticed....
have i missed something? was it something that happened in the quiz? i only really looked at the questions...
Only took 4 months! :P
*stifled laughter*
Yes it was something in the quiz. That is all that needs to be said
TELL!
ok so who is going to fill me in with what happened? i'm sure i'm not the only one that missed it.....
R.G would probably go into his "kill someone" phase again if I did :D
Ohh I feel like i've missed out on something big :(
Is this what it felt like not to know Ted Kravitz's real middle name then?
we know what his middle name is?
yep. although the ted thing was slightly worse :P
I'm sure it's worth it... :P
There are 44 people on dropio just now and 48 comments on the song drop.
that's gotta be a record.
No its not.
Yup.
Can't forget it either...
i'm sure you can out run him ;)
Some amazing stats right there. :)
Christine's adoring fans. :D
Normally there are low single figures
Doesn't look like she wants them though, if you know what I'm saying. No offense or nothing.
Now 48 online. Must have been recently plugged in another forum
i don't think we ever have or ever will turn down a compliment.
what christine doesn't need is more work :)
Or forumS, by the looks of it.
ah bum... as I write this blog entry I realise how similar it';s sounding to the BBC-ITV one I did...
not good..
I am flattered. I am also not famous.
She doesn't need to do it often, you know. We'd want to keep her fresh! :) A song by the time we get to Silverstone would be fantastic. :D
...yet.
you're not a celebrity no, but you're famous within the f1 blogging world....
:D
Right, time to get Felipe Baby onto my iPod, then. And we all should, too! :)
drop the word 'blogging', and you'd be spot-on. :)
Journeyer won the quiz
Well done Journeyer. As I admitted, bad week for me this week, I think this week was the prime opportunity for Mr C to finally beat me.
does that have something to do with the fact you didn't know it was 2009?
that was worth waking up for.
Ah man, lost the quiz again!
I got other that fact. I'll let Woodwiss tell you what happend
:D
Too true! :) Probably won't be around for next week's edition, but I'll drop by there from time to time. :D
scott! fill us in! :)
Does anyone else think that sentance makes no sense?
52 on dropio
That's just... nuts. :O
is drop.io built to cope?
They better thank us for driving traffic to their site. ;)
57 now
OK, here goes - first round was 5 questions of quotes from this season aka 2009. Maverick clearly stated this they were from 2009 before he asked the first one, and about 3 questions in, R.G asks "So are these from 2009 then?"
:D
Err, I think that was just me.
i'm not sure they make money from traffic. but hopefully a couple of viewers will sign up for a drop or two.
When you think of all the hours of effort that have been put in producing content and one song gets such a huge response. It was a very good song to be fair.
Well thats not true, I thought the entire questions were actually from the history of the sport. Not just 2009
I usually got told about an extension the day after I’d finished the assignment. {Comment #733}
Either I'd be told about extensions about a week after I'd done the work or I'd be one of the reasons the extension was put in place. This is because I either found assignments so straightforward that I'd buzz through them in a couple of days or everything that could possibly go wrong would. The lack of consistency in handing stuff in was as frustrating for me as it was for some of my teachers.
Well something along those lines anyway, but still - LMFAO! :D
:D aww poor RG.
could it not have been the xmas video or something though? that was a joint effort that took hours and hours and hours.
kindest response anyone has given me so far
I think Mr C needs a big sidepodhug. I feel your pain.
True that, but maybe with that extra little people instrested in Sidepodcast, maybe it can be in the future?
BT Internet are one of the few companies I have ever lost my temper with thanks to them cancelling the company ADSL 3 days after it was installed. {Comment #758}
Weird behaviour from BT. Don't they like having customers?
(As an ex-BT Internet user, I feel entitled to this piece of cynicism).
Mr C need some Sidepodlove from everyone here :)
Are you kidding? Everyone hails Mr C as a god for bringing back a doohickey that he took down in the first place. Sidepodhug nothing.
Heh, I started this Mr C loving in January before this doohickey nonsense crept in ;) It is Mrs C turn soon, but at this rate...
Apologies if this seems a little similar to my blog from yesterday, but nevertheless...
http://toata.blogspot.com/2009/04/13-you-will-never-break-chain.html
Oooh… history! My favorite subject when I was in school {Comment #773}
I liked history quite a bit (though maths was my favourite subject). I wanted to do History GCSE but it clashed with GCSE Music...
WOW, Christine, after meeting you at the Science Museum Meet up this is a total, yet amazing, surprise, Many, Many Congrats, but one quick question, when is the album coming out?
To be fair, it was a modified (improved) version that came back.
:D
Exactly what Steven and I were thinking... hehehe. :)
I'm not sure if you should ask that right now... *worried expression*
My advice - read the comments before posting.
Yup
Seconded.
Even my Dad knows's who Christine and MrC are, and he doesn't even have an internet connection, so Christine, you are famous.
Erm, how does your dad know them?
57 now {Comment #827}
Where are all these drop.io comments? I can't find any of them...
Page 2 of the drop
Check the actual song drop. They're all on the right-hand side.
I don't want to sound hypocritical or biased or offensive here, but I felt that I needed to say it.
Look, I too have enjoyed the song and yes it's exciting that someone from this community is being recognised for something which was relatively done just for a laugh but is now shared widely across the internet as we speak. I'm sure some of you just consider it a bit of a joke to be asking questions like "When's the album coming out?" but I think that we just need to calm it down a little. Christine has said she's flattered by all the complements towards it, but my feeling is that she's a little uneasy about the whole situation. There are people who want to be famous and well-known but for the right reasons. My guess is that this song isn't one of them. Sure, we all enjoy it and so does everyone else outside SPC who has stumbled upon it. But I think we need to just tone it down for Christine's sake. From what I read from her responses this evening, she seems a little touchy about the subject.
If she doesn't want to be a star, then that's her decision. We shouldn't force it on to someone who chooses not to go down that route. Of course, no-one expected it to get this big. I mean, put yourself in her place - how would you feel if people were telling you you were a star or that you should be one when you know personally that's not what you want, yet people keep bombarding you with it. I for one wouldn't feel too good about it.
Let's not hype this up more than it has been. I think if keep on at the level we're going, someone's going to say one wrong thing and then...well, I hate to think about it. You guys see what I'm saying here? Let's just respect how Christine feels about it a bit more. :)
Suddenly got quiet. Oh well. Back to bed for me. Morning, everyone. :)
See ya journeyer.
And just as I say that...
Agreed.
Later, Lukeh. :)
I download the last weeks worth of podcasts for him on a Wednesday night, hence I'm on here how, and put them on a memory stick for him to listen to on Thursdays when I take my mum out for the day.
Ooooh, how nice of you. :)
Right, I REALLY should get to sleep now. My Internet's cutting out like crazy again. Good night. ;)
Thank you for sticking up for me Scott, but I hope I haven't actually been too touchy about it. I only really want to get across three points:
1. I am super flattered that so many people like the song.
2. I have no desire to be famous.
3. I am in denial about what happened today.
If I actually stopped and listened to Mr C when he keeps saying: rob.has.heard.you.sing... I think my head might explode.
Easier to pretend it didn't happen. :)
I see what you're saying Scott and I agree, but to be honest I think the most that'll happen is a quick note on a couple of racing websites. The BBC F1 team (TV or radio) might ring up and ask for a chat, which Christine can decline.
I've got a draft written in my blog but I don't want to post it if it makes anyone uncomfortable.
Don't mention it. I just thought I'd say something before the whole situation got out of hand between everyone here. :)
Do you have time to go back to bed. You must be due to get up soon.
It absolutely doesn't. Please feel free to post anything you like about it.
Nothing to see here, move along please.
agreed. please do it pat.
I work European hours - still 6+ hours before work.
Nice to see Christine's cool with things. :)
course we are. we'll tell you if we're not.
No more than anyone else would be. Well, anyone normal who isn't an X-Factor 'wannabe famous and I don't care how'.
Just keep thinking Rob has heard your voice and liked it.
Well I wasn't thinking of looking at anything until you just mentioned it. Why, what's going on?!
Ta.
It's a start at least.
Oh wait...calm it down, Scotty, calm it down...
No, no, no, the opposite of that.
all i keep thinking... she just sang on the radio! actual singing. out loud. she doesn't even sing in front of me.
Page 2 of the drop {Comment #857}
Thank you, Pat :)
Just as well TOTP is no on any more then
What YOU have to remember is Scott is that not everybody is in the internet 24 hours a day, I have only on here for about half an hour to download the podcasts for my dad, and came across a link to the song when scrolling down the comments to see what was happening about Mclaren and Donington, if I missed the comments where Christine said she did not what people talking about her great song than I'm sorry, but as the links to the file on drop.io haven't been deleted, or the actual file removed from drop.io then I can only assume that Christine and MrC are happy for people to still listen too, and therefore comment about, the track, that is after all what blogs are for.
So Christine I am sorry if any of my comments have upset you or MrC, and I hope that you will forgive me for missing that one comment out of the 850+ on this post that I should have seem.
no they didn't steve. don't worry. and we expect no-one to read all the comments.
thank you for sharing the shows offline. always appreciated ;)
I'm just the same really - I'll sing to my heart's content when it's just me in the house or in a seperate room, but I couldn't really properly do it in front of someone. Even if I did so and won a talent contest because of it when I went to Leicester Uni with my school when starting 6th form. But that's another story.
For the record I never, ever, ever, ever sing.
So how is everyone this evening? :)
Fine thanks, Lukeh.
Hey, I used to get *paid* to open my mouth and sing.... and now I tend to shut up because the children say horrible things and I sound awfully out of practise to myself now... so I just sing in my head (constantly, a lot, etc etc) or when I'm safely on-my-own...
And no, unless you know where to find very old tapes, or have a list of who used to use session work so that they wouldn't sound crap (there was always more cash in not getting credited!) there is no evidence that I'm going to admit to!
Thanks MrC
The last time I sang was when I was in the school choir when I was 8 or 9 years old, so about 28 odd years ago, even at that age I scared myself at now bad my singing was a sweared, not that an 8 year old would swear, to every sing again.
Good stuff :D
Has anyone seen the Killer Question for the Panel? It's on the Wiki, that's all I'll say. ;)
I only really want to get across three points:
1. I am super flattered that so many people like the song.
2. I have no desire to be famous.
3. I am in denial about what happened today. {Comment #866}
1. You've earned the admiration, not just for the song but for the many and varied things you've produced for us over the years.
2. That's fair enough. You are yourself and should above all be respected as such. In fact, you will be the same Christine we know and like whether society decides to place the "famous" or "star" labels upon you or not :)
3. Understandable. It will probably be easier to appreciate the good parts of today from a distance.
And what's wrong with my question?
Did I say there was anything wrong? Just pointing it out.
I just thought I’d say something before the whole situation got out of hand between everyone here. {Comment #868}
It was for the best that you said it, Scott. I think we all got a tad over-excited.
:D
I have a couple of ideas.
Shame I'm not on the panel.
Voice mail
set kathi on him wrt skype finding?
Well I wasn’t thinking of looking at anything until you just mentioned it. Why, what’s going on?! {Comment #877}
I think it may be the blogging equivalent of the gentle buzzing felt in the head upon reaching home after a hard evening's partying.
So how is everyone this evening? :) {Comment #888}
Extremely happy!
In my defence I put it there on Sunday before Felipe baby hit the big time
Hurrah! :D
Fed up with building servers for companies who can't lock their doors properly!
Other than that - pretty good.
One for me (and I lol) here
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090423.wsleep0423/BNStory/Science/
Just so long as there was a backup. Incidentally, was the data on the stolen equipment secure?
"Night owls actually have more mental stamina than those who awaken at the crack of dawn, according to new research."
i KNEW it :)
There was images of the hard drives taken that evening.
Secure data? Nope.
6 years of source code was nicked along with the machines.
The quantity of stuff that was taken though makes the police think that someone was stealing the kit to set up their own office or to sell onto to someone who was.
Hurrah! {Comment #904}
It's been that sort of evening.
That said, the really hard work starts tomorrow morning because I've got a month and a day to sort out the NaBloPoMo script if I want to self-publish it using the voucher I got for completing the NaBloPoMo challenge.
My parents want me to get the play into a state where it could be sold and/or performed, but I think I'll wait until I see some advice on how to do it in a non-cringeworthy manner.
Fed up with building servers for companies who can’t lock their doors properly! {Comment #905}
I don't blame you for feeling that way - information security is very important to companies and the degree of theft you talked about later is staggering.
“If you allow them to live on their preferred schedule, then they can outperform the morning types,” he said.
I want to move back to a place that has 24 hour supermarkets.
Vindication
I did get asked about biometric security today.
I played them an episode of Mythbusters where they defeated a fingerprint scanner using a photocopy of a fingerprint.
So replacing them is relatively simple then - restore the images and away you go.
Most likely it'll be wiped by the new owners of the equipment, but that's a lot of data.
Quite.... mind you - I'm not sure what counts as early? I'm the person who used to get up at 3am to do homework and then go back to sleep for another few hours....
Makes sense to me
I (heart) 24hr shopping, except when they run out of taramasalata - like tonight, and monday for that matter :)
Good man. There's no subsitute for a proper password. Plus TrueCrypt if you're really paranoid.
Not quite that simple, machine specs have changed, but essentially is the easiest way to get everything running again.
Hope so for their sake. The software they write sells for around £2000 per seat! Most places have 10 seats.
you'd get up? the trick is to stay awake until it's finished and then go to bed, snatching as much sleep as you can... not that i do that anymore.
Just a little test of DoohickyV2
Although I do feel for the poor sods who have to work those hours and would rather not....
Could you not eat Houmous instead? You can diy that at least ...
I used to go to bed and get at 3am to write essays and reports
I hadn't discovered all nights at that point (I was 12!) ... now when I was 13/14/15/16 I could frequently be found doing hw at 2am between 'takes'...
I used to run my programming assignments in the middle of the night as that was the only time the server wasn't overloaded with everyone else trying to compile their poorly written ADA assignments.
I actually bought salsa instead which was fine by me.
Coming from a 24hr industry myself I do have some sympathy for those who work night shifts. Though I know many who choose nights over days.
I suppose we get used to late night shops and if they never existed we'd be none the wiser and would probably shop smarter in the first place
I stay up as late as necessary and then collapse, and hope the energy drink gets me through the next day. Of course I didn't know about them when I did GCSEs... that hurt.
aaaahhh, wow. i've worked on textiles all night once, at about 7 i had a shower and got dressed and it was only once i had got to school i remembered i hadn't slept... god that was a long day....
Or you get used to them then move back to the crappy small town you grew up in, which doesn't have any.
Delivery to home works well :-) If I could get proper veg delivered I wouldn't need to go out other than for fun at all... (and would probably spend less too teehee) but veg boxes always have the wrong combination of stuff in for my liking, or too many things that have come a long long long way (grrr)
Don't know how people do it. The only time I did an all nighter was at uni. Arrived in the lecture at 9am. Stayed an hour but very nearly fell asleep so somehow dragged myself home and was out like a light. Failed the course..
i did feel very ill by the end of the day.
anyways, i'm off to sleep now as i'm a little shattered, and face an exam i'm not prepared for in the morning! fun times.. night! x
Good night Lou, good luck for tomorrow
Good luck :-)

Night Lukeh
There's nothing like popping down to your local Tesco's at 3am for a microwave curry diner. Opening 24 hours 6 days a week was the best thing Tesco did, staff are they overnight filling the shelf's anyway, and the tills at my local store are self service after midnight, so I didn't even have to worry about having to talk to the cashiers.
