I would continue the tradition of pointing out what special day it is today, however it can only be the "day where McLaren face the FIA." It's bound to be on the minds of everyone, but are we expecting an answer today or will the governing body need a day or so to think about it? Anyway, elsewhere, we're discussing:

  • Alonso has been discussing the chances of Renault catching up to bid for the title, and in doing so suggests that Brawn GP and Red Bull may appear to be small teams but could be considered big teams - bigger than even Renault. Brawn? Really?
  • Daimler has managed to turn a $3bn profit from Q1 last year to an almost $2bn loss this year. This is only relevant because Daimler own Mercedes who have a stake in McLaren. What do you mean tenuous link? The good news is that although their shares suffered, they picked up again by the end of the day.
  • If you're thinking about getting married, or know anyone who can't quite decide on how their day should go, then I have written the very post! Looking at some of the elements you could pick if you had the money... and desire... and understanding partner.

That's it for today. Stay tuned throughout the day as we'll discuss anything that hits headlines, including any news coming out of the McLaren hearing. I'll see you in the comments.

Alonso is possibly regretting returning to Renault?

Hehe, today is the big day indeed for Mclaren. I'm not even gonna predict what could happpen as I genuinely have no idea what could happen...

Sure - Honda-funded, Virgin-sponsored, you can make the case that they are a big team. Not Honda-big, but big nonetheless.

I'll be very surprised if we get a decision from the FIA today, they wont start til lunch time, then they'll hear the evidence, go for tea, get "mummy dear" to wipe up the dribble, think about what they've heard and be asleep before you know it. My monies on 14:00 Thursday earliest, bless'em, we just dont realise what a tough job it is that they do on our behalf.

  • Alianora La Canta29/04/2009 at 01:27

The FIA won't publish the result until tomorrow, which is just as well as I do my annual "Renault and long-term driver strategy" entry today. I have no idea how this ended up becoming an annual tradition on my blog, it just did...

When you have someone as tetchy as Alonso (who can go at any minute) and someone as unbelievably slow as Piquet, they must surely be procrastinating a lot of last-minute decisions...

    God Morgen!

You vanished for 2 hours there. Haha! So... today is hearing day. Still no result until tomorrow, though... What I think will be more interesting, though, is what will happen to the budget cap and other 2010 regs at the World Council meeting.

Alia said the result of the hearing won't be out until tomorrow.

But I'd think the World Council decisions should be out by today. Could be wrong on that count, though.

I'm referring here to the 2010-related decisions. I wonder what figure FOTA suggested?

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 08:00

    From JA's Twitter:

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh will face the FIA world council today alone, with McLaren lawyer, but no Hamilton, no Dennis and no Ryan

Wow... going there all alone (except for his lawyer). Good luck to him - he might just get eaten alive there. I originally thought Lewis should go to show support, but that might just cause more trouble than they really need to handle.

Morning folks (from the city library)

Gavin - You'd better start worrying - just found out that the Nissan GTR IS coming for the TCL mod! HA! Told you I'd seen a pic of it! All it took was a simple query on rFactorCentral and I got the answer from one of the guys working on the mod. The Jag XJS is going to be coming too.

Better start preparing for me flying past your Bimmer off the line after all then, Gav ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss29/04/2009 at 08:16

And here's the proof, a post from RS_Owner, one of the mod developers, explaining the situation (I'm not Madcowie btw):

Your first thought is correct Madcowie , the All-In-One includes everything except the sounds. To all asking about Jim Beamer's screenshots with the DR30 Skyline and XJS they are not part of TCL. Our Jaguar XJS (as with some of the other cars we had showing at RSC) are at present without physics / cockpits / lights but are all painted and it is hoped some of them will be finished in the future (XJS, Alfa GTV6, Starion + Skyline GTR R32) As a team we decided to complete and release what was nearest 100% done so you guys could enjoy that while we sorted out the rest, this is why the current mods seasons begin at 1986 and end at 1989 (with the odd exception of a few extra cars from years either side)

    :D

There's been a screenshot flying around of an XJS which TCL claim isn't their work. So one would assume that the DR30 Skyline is too. I'm not sure on that. But I know for certain that according to that developer of the mod, the R32 GT-R IS coming.

That is going to ruin what is a very well-balanced and fun mod. I managed to beat the RS500's at Silverstone 1988 in an M3 - but man, was I overdriving that car or what?

I'm sure those who disagree with it won't drive it, such as yourself. I like the car and yes, I'm going to drive it because that's my choice. I grew up watching it on the ATCC videos my dad had. Because of the GT-R, as well as the Sierra and Commodore, I got into touring car racing.

Besides, I'm sure any online championships that want to keep the racing close won't allow it to be used if they feel too many people will use it just to win. I just want to drive it because I want to experience what it was like to race. If I win with it, then that's a bonus.

The problem is that you NEED to restrict it as every noob will choose it - and then wipe out half the field and ruin the race. I've seen enough GPL races and GT races online to attest to that.

Donington updates from DoningtonF1 on Twitter:

Apparently contractors walked offsite 2 weeks ago because of backpay due. Hopefully local devt agency will offer support but whether it can be enough or in time is a different story

Could Bernie be about to take over the lease at Donington Park. Apparently he's already made a move to buy Donington Hall next to track...

Tis true, but not even a press release from him. I'm sure a lot of the F1 media have asked him for his side of the story, so giving no response doesn't really help his cause, because it gives a negative impression.

So the body language of McLaren (well, Lewis and lawyer) could give away whether it went relatively well or badly, but depending on how well the WMSC can keep a secret, we still might not know the details?

To be fair, it's not like they need to spend three hours deciding whether each point is valid because McLaren effectively did that before they started with their written public apology.

From Autosport on the budget cap:

Despite the teams having not provided a counter argument to the £30 million figure, it is believed that the FIA may choose to keep the final level open pending future discussions with the teams.

AUTOSPORT has learned that the three new teams that enter F1 in 2010 could be given $10 million (USD) in television rights money and some transportation costs in exchange for constructing their own car and signing up to F1 for a five-year period from 2010 to 2014.

JA said there's a LOT of them waiting in the wings. It's in the blog.

Yeah I read it. Either he's gonna buy the rights to the car and sell off the sponsorship or someone else is coming in to sponsor the car, I think...

    SUSPENDED BAN

  • Alianora La Canta29/04/2009 at 11:01

    3 race ban!!!! Comment #75}

Fear not. It's suspended, which given the behaviour of McLaren, means that it's unlikely to trigger.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:01

    SUSPENDED BAN

Don't scare me like that again!!!

So they're on probation for Spain, Monaco, and Turkey.

Oops - it means they're on probation for 12 months. A repeat offense gets them a 3-race ban. So they're off the hook, basically.

  • Alex29/04/2009 at 11:03

what does suspended 3 race ban mean???

  • Alianora La Canta29/04/2009 at 11:03

Also, there's no mention of any fines or points penalties. This means that if McLaren are good, the only actual penalty they get for the incident is the disqualification from Australia that everyone already knew about.

This also gives me hope that there are unlikely to be any stupid decisions made at the WMSC meeting this afternoon.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:04

what does suspended 3 race ban mean???

A repeat offense anytime in the next 12 months (May 2009-April 2010) gets them a 3-race ban.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/04/2009 at 11:04

what does suspended 3 race ban mean???

It means they won't get the punishment unless further facts are made public or if they are naughty again.

    A fair punishment I reckon...

  • Alex29/04/2009 at 11:04

At an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council held in Paris on 29 April 2009, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes admitted five charges of breaching article 151c of the International Sporting Code relating to events at the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.

    The following decision was taken:

“Having regard to the open and honest way in which McLaren Team Principal, Mr Martin Whitmarsh, addressed the WMSC and the change in culture which he made clear has taken place in his organisation, the WMSC decided to suspend the application of the penalty it deems appropriate.

“That penalty is a suspension of the team from three races of the FIA Formula One World Championship. This will only be applied if further facts emerge regarding the case or if, in the next 12 months, there is a further breach by the team of article 151c of the International Sporting Code.”

The full reasons for this decision will be issued shortly.

here is the statement form FIA

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:04

Also, there's no mention of any fines or points penalties. This means that if McLaren are good, the only actual penalty they get for the incident is the disqualification from Australia that everyone already knew about.

Yup - as I said, they're basically off the hook.

This also gives me hope that there are unlikely to be any stupid decisions made at the WMSC meeting this afternoon.

Never assume anything with the WMSC...

  • Lukeh29/04/2009 at 11:05

    Agreed.

  • Alianora La Canta29/04/2009 at 11:05

    what does suspended 3 race ban mean??? {Comment #100}

It means that if McLaren are spotted doing anything else that could be construed as damaging to the sport (and thus breaching Article 151c) in the next 12 months, they will get the 3 race ban as of the point when they are found guilty of such an incident. Unless and until that happens, everyone carries on as if no penalty had been imposed.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:06

    Booooooo.

I think that's fair, Lukeh - they should know better next time. Shame on them if they try that again.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/04/2009 at 11:06

I guess so.. I mean, it is fair, I just hated the whole lying of the team and dishonesty aspect, not to mention the continuation of lies when the team had the chance to own up for it. Would've been a 3 race ban with no suspension if I could make the call but that's why I'm in Uni and not in WMSC :P

  • Alianora La Canta29/04/2009 at 11:08

    Never assume anything with the WMSC… {Comment #105}

My thinking was that if the WMSC expected to do anything crazy, they'd have given McLaren a harsh penalty in order to distract people from the decision. While a ban for the season or something of that ilk would have caused bad press, the FIA could easily have blamed it on evil McLaren and therefore not take the full impact of the blast. If the main story was that the WMSC had done something stupid, then the FIA, as the WMSC's organiser, has no way of dodging the blow.

I suppose it is possible for the WMSC to commit an act of stupidity accidentally, though...

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:08

    They might catch Brawn ;)

If they got banned, Merc might've pulled out. If they did, Brawn would be in even more trouble...

Still, McLaren are a whopping 42 points behind Brawn, and they're still behind Toyota and Red Bull on pace. They're still long-shots for the title at best...

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:09

Because nobody else has ever lied or been dishonest in F1?

I shall remind you that the team owner of your beloved Brawns has been in trouble in the past for some rather devious things!

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:11

Reposting thoughts from Autosport on the budget cap:

Despite the teams having not provided a counter argument to the £30 million figure, it is believed that the FIA may choose to keep the final level open pending future discussions with the teams.

AUTOSPORT has learned that the three new teams that enter F1 in 2010 could be given $10 million (USD) in television rights money and some transportation costs in exchange for constructing their own car and signing up to F1 for a five-year period from 2010 to 2014.

    Times are a-changing, indeed...

But in terms of punishment, I agree with Gavin - a race ban would've been too harsh on the team, not to mention Amy's boy... :D

  • Lukeh29/04/2009 at 11:14

Because nobody else has ever lied or been dishonest in F1?

I'm not saying that dishonesty has never been a part of the sport in previous years including Mr Brawn at times, although his cases were more with legality rather than lies I'd say, but in a time where transparency with the teams is become far more commonplace in seeing how F1 works and runs, one of the first things we as fans get to see is a team with the current World Champion already producing stuff like that and it's just left a very, very sour taste in my mouth really concerning Mclaren.

It's just my point of view anyways, I'm not saying the WMSC make the wrong choice here, I think I just would've been harsher with them.

Running an illegal car isn't dishonest (so long as it wasn't done on purpose). In such cases, you exclude them from the results, but not ban them from future races.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/04/2009 at 11:17

He was in a team that ran a car with hidden traction control, modified a standard fuel filter, ignored black flags, ran the car too low and had a less than clean driver. That is as bad as lying to gain a position in my book!

Remember Hamilton had already been disqualified from Australia for this, despite it being outside the powers of the stewards to do so. Unless you are suggesting that lying to a steward (an action not specifically banned by any regulation) is worse than the "secret" second fuel tank BAR had in 2005, a three-race ban on top would have been unjustified.

Running an illegal car isn't dishonest (so long as it wasn't done on purpose). In such cases, you exclude them from the results, but not ban them from future races.

Do you seriously think at team would run an illegal car without knowing?

Besides, lying is a heat of the moment decision whilst running an illegal car takes some amount of planning - that has to be worse, right?

  • pauli (oz)29/04/2009 at 11:21

And my point is that Brawn did run illegal cars on purpose @ Benetton

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 11:22

Yes but Benetton ran a car with hidden traction control, modified a standard fuel filter, ignored black flags, ran the car too low and had a less than clean driver. That is as bad as lying to gain a position in my book!

Hidden traction control - no one was ever able to prove that they ran it in a race

Modified fuel filter - it's actually odd they got no punishment from this, but there you go...

Ignored black flags - the FIA punished them with a 3-race ban for it - which is even harsher than what McLaren got today

Ran the car too low - did the plank get too think because they ran too low? or because they ran over too many a kerb?

Less than clean driver - we've been through this debate before, so I won't go back to it again...

  • pauli (oz)29/04/2009 at 11:22

And my point is that Brawn did run illegal cars on purpose @ Benetton

  • pauli (oz)29/04/2009 at 11:27

Not sure if this has been covered, but I think the FIA has contributed to the whole thing, by divers being scared to overtake under the safety car. This doesn't excuse McLaren, but I'm sure the Spa thing was on their mind.

No doubt about it - Spa was on their minds. And it was the very paranoia of repeating that which got them into trouble again.

Although yes FIA have made things worse by having rules that no one understands.

Did Toyota just go “oops” in Australia?

Well, quite. Everyone pushes the rules to the limits of their interpretation.

It's the responsibility of the teams to ensure that their cars meet the regulations – that's why they do all the measurements when the cars go to the 'bridge' on Friday/Saturday.

Flexi-wings are the kind of subtle naughtiness that usually come to the attention of the scrutineers via other teams squealing.

Exactly. Kinda like Michael passing Kimi who went off at France 2002. But since none of the cameras saw the incident in full, no one really knew what was going on. That's why McLaren got paranoid.

  • Alex29/04/2009 at 11:35

What is it with the Internet lately? Either it's unbelivably slow, or it keeps cutting out. It's been slow on any PC I've been using, actually - even on the office Intranet!

I'm sure somebody has mentioned this already... But I thought this a strange line from AUTOSPORT...

Furthermore, former team boss Ron Dennis announced that he was stepping away totally from the F1 team in a move not unconnected to the matter - despite claims from Dennis otherwise.

I don't think it's not unfair to imply that it goes without saying that there may or may not be too many double negatives in that sentence. Or not. :D

Furthermore, former team boss Ron Dennis announced that he was stepping away totally from the F1 team in a move not unconnected to the matter - despite claims from Dennis otherwise.

AUTOSPORT needs an editor to take a look at that sentence and chop it up into shorter ones.

  • Alex Andronov29/04/2009 at 12:08

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 12:45

Meh, a ban's a ban. When will they take it, that's the question?

They'll only take it if more facts about lie-gate come out that will incriminate them, or if they have a repeat offense. The suspended ban can be imposed anytime within the next 12 months (so up to the end of April 2010).

  • me29/04/2009 at 12:45

    What are you on today?

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 12:53

Just wondering now how the FIA are going to screw them now to get them that 3 race ban...

Nah, they won't do that. As I've said before, Lewis is allied with Max now, and they don't want Merc to leave. They'll just let New McLaren be.

  • me29/04/2009 at 12:55

mandy's getting in on the silverstone action now:

"The Daily Telegraph reports that business secretary Lord Mandelson has sought a personal reassurance about the race’s future from Formula 1’s commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone."

Nah, they won't do that. As I've said before, Lewis is allied with Max now, and they don't want Merc to leave. They'll just let New McLaren be.

    I'd love to believe that - but I can't.

The WMSC basically said that Ron is to blame for everything and now he's gone, all is good. Ron being gone will certainly help McLaren to an extent, but not that much at all.

  • me29/04/2009 at 12:58

The WMSC basically said that Ron is to blame for everything and now he's gone, all is good. Ron being gone will certainly help McLaren to an extent, but not that much at all.

i like them more in his absence. maybe max does too?

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 12:58

    I'd love to believe that - but I can't.

The FIA has been a paragon of common sense lately - what with the diffuser ruling, and then Whitmarsh. Something must be amiss! :P

But seriously, I really do think it was a Ron Dennis thing more than it was a McLaren thing that bothered Max no end. And there must be a reason Lewis approached Max and they bonded and Max told him not to be stupid and to stay at McLaren.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 12:59

i like them more in his absence. maybe max does too?

Ron said Max wouldn't be displeased with him leaving.

    Another double negative! :D

lying to the stewards. and then being recalled a week later and sticking to their lies in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?

But as long as stay behaved, that punishment won't matter. And true, they were DSQed in Melbourne, but I'm referring to the punishment they may have received today (race ban, further points deduction, fine) but didn't get.

  • Stuart C29/04/2009 at 13:25

considering what they did… that is getting off the hook.

That's a valid point. But I'd argue that, taken as a whole, this is a good decision for F1. The potential damage to the sport outweighed whatever advantage was to be gained by handing down a stiff punishment. A draconian ruling would have brought F1 to the attention of the outside world (by which I mean TV news and the front pages of newspapers worldwide) in an entirely negative fashion.

So far as said outside world is concerned, this is a very boring story that was done and dusted a month ago. Revisiting it serves only to reinforce the notion that F1 is a very silly and arbitrary sport, and not worth spending time and money on.

There is a time and a place to score points against people you don't like; and, wouldn't you know, Boris Johnson recently wrote a column on those sort of lines...

the drivers look sweaty (or in jarno's instance, half-dead), and they sit there in gleaming white overalls like they have turned a wheel all day?

some might consider that being 'lied' to.

  • Jeremy29/04/2009 at 13:29

    Yes – in deep merde!

What do you know, or read into the punishment, that I don't?

A suspended ban seems like a slap on the wrist to me, but given McLaren's recent propensity for trouble, it may be the FIA's way of saying 'you put the screws on us this time so we couldn't lay into you, but we will get you...soon!'

It made the Sports Tonight news here in Sydney.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 13:29

There is a time and a place to score points against people you don't like; and, wouldn't you know, Boris Johnson recently wrote a column on those sort of lines...

VERY interesting article... A straight-shooter, the Mayor of London is.

  • me29/04/2009 at 13:30

That's a valid point. But I'd argue that, taken as a whole, this is a good decision for F1. The potential damage to the sport outweighed whatever advantage was to be gained by handing down a stiff punishment.

i agree. a sensible decision from the wmsc. i think if this happened two years ago the penalty would've been different. thanks to the economy and various other factors mclaren have gotten away with it though.

on the other hand, if the team are now playing music in the paddock instead of moaning about how loudly renault play music in the paddock. it's all been worthwhile. i guess it's a shame it took so much controversy to get them there.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 13:31

that said, that wouldn't have happened had ron dennis still been around.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 13:32

so who's left from the old guard (aside from B&M)? only williams and head now?

  • Stuart C29/04/2009 at 13:33

Nowt – just my (feeble) attempt at a joke.

More to come this afternoon - this time, concerning the 2010 regs and THAT budget cap.

The FIA are probably doing their usual 'terrible decision we hope will be ignored by the media because they'll be talking about McLaren' tactic, like how the budget caps were pretty much ignored when first mentioned because everyone was freaking out over the most-wins thing.

If that was their intent, then surely they were better off handing McLaren a harsher punishment? As Alia said, at least they could offload the blame onto McLaren for that.

  • Steven Roy29/04/2009 at 14:42

He was in a team that ran a car with hidden traction control, modified a standard fuel filter, ignored black flags, ran the car too low and had a less than clean driver. That is as bad as lying to gain a position in my book!

He also ran teams that twice had their driver ram another driver to try to clinch a championship. Had the same driver park in Monaco to stop Alnso taking pole. It was a team with Brawn pulling strings that invented the concept of a driver being blocked aerodynamically.

Brawn is less than squeaky clean as are both his previous teams and many others on the grid

    A ringtone??????

  • Steven Roy29/04/2009 at 14:48

Hidden traction control - no one was ever able to prove that they ran it in a race Modified fuel filter - it’s actually odd they got no punishment from this, but there you go… Ignored black flags - the FIA punished them with a 3-race ban for it - which is even harsher than what McLaren got today Ran the car too low - did the plank get too think because they ran too low? or because they ran over too many a kerb? Less than clean driver - we’ve been through this debate before, so I won’t go back to it again…

It was illegal to have the traction control/launch control on the car. Whether it was used or not is entirely irrelevant. Read any of the magazines at that time about how Schumcaher with a Ford could pass Williams with far superior Renault engines off the line. Nigel Roebuck many times wrote about the odd noises Schumacher's engine made that no other car on the grid did. They ran those illegal systems.

Ignoring flag signals is a serious breach of sadety protocol and far worse than lying to stewards. No-one has ever died in a stewards room of a lie.

The Schumacher debate is perfectly relevant. Mclaren are portrayed as a team the repeatedly cheats but compared to Benetton/Renault which is effectively the same team they are lily white.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 14:49

True, the TC was found. Yet they were never convicted of any charges?

  • Steven Roy29/04/2009 at 15:18

That’s a valid point. But I’d argue that, taken as a whole, this is a good decision for F1. The potential damage to the sport outweighed whatever advantage was to be gained by handing down a stiff punishment. A draconian ruling would have brought F1 to the attention of the outside world (by which I mean TV news and the front pages of newspapers worldwide) in an entirely negative fashion.

The other way you could interpret this is that the FIA has become more sensible after Max's hobby became public. When the fine was issued all the headlines were about how evil McLaren were whereas now the headlines would be along the lines of Pervert Mosley punishes F1 team.

  • Journeyer29/04/2009 at 15:19

True, true. GP2 Asia is still a better championship than A1GP. But A1GP’s downfall hasn’t really been Bernie - they are their own downfall.

There was never enough interest in sponsoring/financing the teams, and then the economy tanked.

    doesn’t discourage anyone else from lying to the stewards in future mind you. {Comment #166}

Unless a team has some special reason for wanting to throw away the race result for whichever event they lie at, I can't see any team being so blatant about it again.

I believe this makes Flavio Briatore the longest-serving head of a Formula 1 team currently serving (having started in 1988), if you ignore the fact that he missed two-and-a-half seasons in the late 1990s.

I still can't get my head round his becoming the new old guard...

The most stupid sentence ever in a GMM story?

    “One solution to the swine flu crisis for formula one would be to stage grands prix without spectators in the stands.” {Comment #447}

Something similar was proposed in 2001 as a worst-case scenario for the British Grand Prix. The small number of people participating means that it is relatively straightforward to impose the relevant testing and biohazard protection measures.

More likely is that it will go ahead as normal, but if swine flu does threaten the race, you can bet Bernie will try to get the corporate people at least...

The question is - can you get an F1 driver to listen to you? Last I heard (admittedly via the August 2007 edition of F1 Racing), there was a lot of resistance to coaching of any kind, to the point where it was inhibiting drivers' progress.

Also, if Daimler made £3bn last year and lost £2bn this, doesn't that mean they still have £1bn left?

Finally, anyone who wants to see the JYS documentary, please email me for details. andy at ajtaylor dot com.

  • me29/04/2009 at 18:51

...but in my constant attempt to push the development envelope I was trying to look at the doohicky on my wii! ;)

why would you do such a thing? why?

Despite being Oprah 9 it doesn't seem to work so well... It keeps polling like it's going off for the page but it never fills the middle section with comments :(

    will investigate.

  • Alex Andronov29/04/2009 at 18:52

why would you do such a thing? why?

    It's a surprise :)

  • me29/04/2009 at 18:52

Also, if Daimler made £3bn last year and lost £2bn this, doesn't that mean they still have £1bn left?

hopefully they have more than that. problem is, this year isn't going to be any easier.

  • me29/04/2009 at 18:53

    It's a surprise :)

    thanks.

  • Christine29/04/2009 at 18:53

Also, if Daimler made £3bn last year and lost £2bn this, doesn't that mean they still have £1bn left?

Presumably, it doesn't reflect how much money they have, it just shows that last year they could bring in 3bn, and this year it is minus three and minus another two. Which isn't good news, really.

Not really - the point of registering with the PRO in this case would not be to collect fees, but to enable statistics of its downloads to count towards the chart. There's no rule that says that UK download singles have to be paid for, as long as they went through a channel such as iTunes or last.fm that tallies downloads in a way that the chart compilers accept.

  • Andy Taylor29/04/2009 at 20:21

Won't this end up in some massive court appearance between spc and the tune of whartever it was called?

Santa Baby - written in 1953, so still in copyright. I'm sure me knows how to make sure the relevant clearance has been obtained.

As the song is a parody hosted in the US, it's probably protected by the first amendment. :)

Thank you, RG, me and Steven. It was surprisingly smooth running apart from the week when I typed nothing at all due to a particularly tough plot knot (being unemployed has its advantages).

This is a really great day for the Sidepodcast community, between this and Christine's singing :)

"Bernie the fastest Mogul in the west" doesn't need to be sung as such. It's more sprechen spiel

  • Pat W29/04/2009 at 20:47

"They called him Bernie and he ran the fastest team sport in the west"

    excellent :-)

  • Scott Woodwiss29/04/2009 at 20:52

Maybe we could all do a song related to F1 and Sidepodcast could mix and release them to raise money for its excellent work in entertaining and informing the supporters of F1 :)

I've got an acoustic guitar, keyboard and MIDI software if anyone needs a mediocre-but-original backing track for their contribution...

Given your love of anonymity, being a singer might not have been the ideal musical talent for you to possess anyway. Computer music, on the other hand, makes it easy for you to hide your face behind the computer and still be really creative.

    I usually got told about an extension the day after I’d finished the assignment. {Comment #733}

Either I'd be told about extensions about a week after I'd done the work or I'd be one of the reasons the extension was put in place. This is because I either found assignments so straightforward that I'd buzz through them in a couple of days or everything that could possibly go wrong would. The lack of consistency in handing stuff in was as frustrating for me as it was for some of my teachers.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/04/2009 at 22:09

I don't want to sound hypocritical or biased or offensive here, but I felt that I needed to say it.

Look, I too have enjoyed the song and yes it's exciting that someone from this community is being recognised for something which was relatively done just for a laugh but is now shared widely across the internet as we speak. I'm sure some of you just consider it a bit of a joke to be asking questions like "When's the album coming out?" but I think that we just need to calm it down a little. Christine has said she's flattered by all the complements towards it, but my feeling is that she's a little uneasy about the whole situation. There are people who want to be famous and well-known but for the right reasons. My guess is that this song isn't one of them. Sure, we all enjoy it and so does everyone else outside SPC who has stumbled upon it. But I think we need to just tone it down for Christine's sake. From what I read from her responses this evening, she seems a little touchy about the subject.

If she doesn't want to be a star, then that's her decision. We shouldn't force it on to someone who chooses not to go down that route. Of course, no-one expected it to get this big. I mean, put yourself in her place - how would you feel if people were telling you you were a star or that you should be one when you know personally that's not what you want, yet people keep bombarding you with it. I for one wouldn't feel too good about it.

Let's not hype this up more than it has been. I think if keep on at the level we're going, someone's going to say one wrong thing and then...well, I hate to think about it. You guys see what I'm saying here? Let's just respect how Christine feels about it a bit more. :)

Thank you for sticking up for me Scott, but I hope I haven't actually been too touchy about it. I only really want to get across three points:

    1. I am super flattered that so many people like the song.

    2. I have no desire to be famous.

    3. I am in denial about what happened today.

If I actually stopped and listened to Mr C when he keeps saying: rob.has.heard.you.sing... I think my head might explode.

Easier to pretend it didn't happen. :)

  • Pat W29/04/2009 at 22:17

I see what you're saying Scott and I agree, but to be honest I think the most that'll happen is a quick note on a couple of racing websites. The BBC F1 team (TV or radio) might ring up and ask for a chat, which Christine can decline.

I've got a draft written in my blog but I don't want to post it if it makes anyone uncomfortable.

Right, I REALLY should get to sleep now. My Internet's cutting out like crazy again. Good night. ;)

    #859 - Scott Woodwiss said:

I don’t want to sound hypocritical or biased or offensive here, but I felt that I needed to say it.

What YOU have to remember is Scott is that not everybody is in the internet 24 hours a day, I have only on here for about half an hour to download the podcasts for my dad, and came across a link to the song when scrolling down the comments to see what was happening about Mclaren and Donington, if I missed the comments where Christine said she did not what people talking about her great song than I'm sorry, but as the links to the file on drop.io haven't been deleted, or the actual file removed from drop.io then I can only assume that Christine and MrC are happy for people to still listen too, and therefore comment about, the track, that is after all what blogs are for.

So Christine I am sorry if any of my comments have upset you or MrC, and I hope that you will forgive me for missing that one comment out of the 850+ on this post that I should have seem.

all i keep thinking... she just sang on the radio! actual singing. out loud. she doesn't even sing in front of me.

I'm just the same really - I'll sing to my heart's content when it's just me in the house or in a seperate room, but I couldn't really properly do it in front of someone. Even if I did so and won a talent contest because of it when I went to Leicester Uni with my school when starting 6th form. But that's another story.

  • Pat W29/04/2009 at 22:28

For the record I never, ever, ever, ever sing.

  • littlepurplegoth29/04/2009 at 22:33

Hey, I used to get *paid* to open my mouth and sing.... and now I tend to shut up because the children say horrible things and I sound awfully out of practise to myself now... so I just sing in my head (constantly, a lot, etc etc) or when I'm safely on-my-own...

And no, unless you know where to find very old tapes, or have a list of who used to use session work so that they wouldn't sound crap (there was always more cash in not getting credited!) there is no evidence that I'm going to admit to!

The last time I sang was when I was in the school choir when I was 8 or 9 years old, so about 28 odd years ago, even at that age I scared myself at now bad my singing was a sweared, not that an 8 year old would swear, to every sing again.

    1. You've earned the admiration, not just for the song but for the many and varied things you've produced for us over the years.

    2. That's fair enough. You are yourself and should above all be respected as such. In fact, you will be the same Christine we know and like whether society decides to place the "famous" or "star" labels upon you or not :)

    3. Understandable. It will probably be easier to appreciate the good parts of today from a distance.

There was images of the hard drives taken that evening.

    Secure data? Nope.

6 years of source code was nicked along with the machines.

The quantity of stuff that was taken though makes the police think that someone was stealing the kit to set up their own office or to sell onto to someone who was.

It's been that sort of evening.

That said, the really hard work starts tomorrow morning because I've got a month and a day to sort out the NaBloPoMo script if I want to self-publish it using the voucher I got for completing the NaBloPoMo challenge.

My parents want me to get the play into a state where it could be sold and/or performed, but I think I'll wait until I see some advice on how to do it in a non-cringeworthy manner.

I played them an episode of Mythbusters where they defeated a fingerprint scanner using a photocopy of a fingerprint.

  • Andy Taylor29/04/2009 at 22:59

There was images of the hard drives taken that evening.

So replacing them is relatively simple then - restore the images and away you go.

    Secure data? Nope.

6 years of source code was nicked along with the machines.

Most likely it'll be wiped by the new owners of the equipment, but that's a lot of data.

Not quite that simple, machine specs have changed, but essentially is the easiest way to get everything running again.

Hope so for their sake. The software they write sells for around £2000 per seat! Most places have 10 seats.

Coming from a 24hr industry myself I do have some sympathy for those who work night shifts. Though I know many who choose nights over days.

I suppose we get used to late night shops and if they never existed we'd be none the wiser and would probably shop smarter in the first place

There's nothing like popping down to your local Tesco's at 3am for a microwave curry diner. Opening 24 hours 6 days a week was the best thing Tesco did, staff are they overnight filling the shelf's anyway, and the tills at my local store are self service after midnight, so I didn't even have to worry about having to talk to the cashiers.
