Continuing my trend of recognising random holidays, today is apparently World Graphic Design Day - celebrating... well, graphic design, obviously. Therefore, we will have to encourage lots of pictures and artwork today. Here's what else we're thinking about:
- Perhaps in the future, yesterday should forever be known as Newhickey Day. We discussed the Doohickey problems in the comments and came up with a way forward. Mr C put in a good few hours work and lo and behold, the doohickey is back. I will update the wiki with new instructions soon, but essentially it is the same doohickey we know and love. The two main additions are a thread drop down at the top - which selects which thread you can reply to (whilst still seeing other incoming comments), and a quick comment button, which will post to that thread if there is none to reply to in the doohickey already. I'm sure that's as clear as mud, any questions, let us know.
- Whilst Mr C was busy writing code, others were busy writing great blog posts. Here's a couple of them: Lukeh takes us on a tour of what he loves about the BBC coverage, whilst Scott needs help making a purchasing decision. If you're in the blogging mood, share your links below.
- In F1 news, well, there was very little news. iSport may be thinking about joining F1, Button is worried that Red Bull are the real threat, and Bernie Ecclestone is still rich.
That'll do it for now. I'm sure there's more to discuss than the few things I have mentioned above, so don't feel limited and just say what's on your mind. I will see you in the comments.
Go Zero Downforce! :D
well whadda you know, a doohickey.
Woohoo!
So to access a new thread we have to refresh the newhickey like the lclt. No more record runs for the doohickey. The current record time/number of comments will stand for ever.
Ah, a new and revitalised Doohickey
Thank you Mr C, I hope you are on the road to recovery now
technically, at the moment that is true. hopefully that won't be the case forever though.
in theory, we should be able to add new threads to the dropdown list, in the same way that we plan to do "there's a new podcast available" style alerts.
that's for the future though.
much better, thank you.
Seems like a revitalised Doohickey makes for a revitalised Mr C. :)
Unlike certain others I am not in the habit of keeping my computer operating for days on end so I don't mind refreshing when I spot a new thread. One of the joys of running Windows is that you know you will have to re-boot sooner rather than later.
A bit like ET and that flower.
:D
Technically, shouldn't this be Doohickey version 1.1?
Though I do like 'Newhickey'
:)
on that subject, we may introduce a sleep mode for doohickey / lclt. essentially it'll stop polling for new comments if you haven't commented for a period of time (probably 3 or 4 hours).
likely there will be a button to click to wake it up again, and catch up on all the missed comments.
we need to do that in order to stop a bunch of needless overnight polling adding strain to the server. hopefully it won't effect anything / anyone. but i figured it's worth throwing out there.
if it's in beta, has it reached version 1 yet?
Beta versions change too
true.
Sounds reasonable, you should market this when it's finished
:)
tis a long way off that yet. still can't edit comments.
You need to have something to aspire to, and the upgraders something to purchase each year ;)
That makes sense. I tend to have the doohickey open all the time my computer is on even if I am on another tab but I doubt I ever go much more than an hour without checking it. Most of the time it is a lot less than that but if I had to click a button to re-start polling fine. I can't see anyon objecting to that so long as the initial cut off time is reasonable.
also true :)
i'm guessing 3-4hrs, but that can be variable. i know alex mentioned he has left doohickey polling at work over the weekend. it's not a huge problem, but it does seem like a bit of a waste of resources.
may tackle that one this week.
i missed doohickey return? Stupid sleep!
Whilst on Doohickey, can you remind me again what the "back" command is on the occasions when I hit the wrong link and it doesn't open in a new window
[I promise to make a note of it this time ;) ]
A home command would be good in those instances too
was a truly great moment for doohickey lovers worldwide. :P
Hasn't been long Amy and we couldn't wake you as loud as we were shouting! :)
backspace.
is this on desktop doohickey?
you've only missed the bugginess. it's good to go now :)
You slept two days in a row?
Yes, sorry, should have clarified
When I mean back, I'm referring to a browser type back (last page viewed)
Backspace still the same for DD
It felt like the return of an old friend.
no probs. was struggling with a starting point for the DD, wasn't sure how it should go. today i've learnt sidepodcast is all about the threads, so that's a decent place to jump off from.
a home button it shall have though (and a start on boot before lukeh asks ;) ).
but i wont be home from work for 8 hours and i want doohickey NOW! I need a job with unrestricted internet.
I will no longer have such stresses as clicking twice on an icon! :D
Night all.
It will join the elite ranks - MSN, Skype, Doohickey. ;)
night andy.
night andy, heading off myself so goodnight everyone else too :)
Hello & G'night Andy
see ya lukeh.
And Lukeh, Ciao
me too, night all
see ya tomorrow chris.
and moi, night all :)
Surely you just need unrestricted amounts of money so that you don't need to work. I know that is what I need.
Night to all the sleepy heads
That should cover it :)
Night to everybody thats leaving.
Good night Andy
night scott.
...was it something i said?
Obviously :D
Found and uses for the speedtape yet? :D
Goodnight Scott too.
*any*
Hehehe :D
S'pose I better get cracking with Aperture again, Flickr upgraded
that would also be good
i have discovered it's designed for things that are meant to stay in one place, and i have very few of those.
if i'm honest, speedtape is too good for me :(
I best crack on and invent that aerospace grade blu-tak then
Like wings, you mean :D
Am now here on Flickr
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bassanoclapper/
i was checking those out earlier. really cool pics.
am i the only one concerned by the massive dents in the rear of the transporter?
Doohickey has returned! Hoorah!
And good morning. :)
Good morning!
Hey Sean!
Newhickey day... I like it! :D
Quiet before the storm, eh? Nothing doing until the hearing tomorrow, it seems.
"It'll do a trip"
Seriously though, if the metal isn't cracked there's not much to worry about if it isn't holding liquid or pressurised gas
Probably just sugar or something
It seems.
Hello Sean & Journeyer
Hello Bassano. :) Everyone seems happy today - I guess the BBC playing "I Can See Clearly Now" last Sunday cheered everyone up? :D
I'm happy because I'm going to see Dylan Moran tonight. ;)
Strange as it's been raining all day in England :)
Funny, funny guy
:D What else is new. ;)
Indeed.
Good point
As it is here. :) But hey - it makes the air cooler, so no one's complaining about the heat. :D
Here, it's just makes the ground wet!
Speaking of cool air, it got down to 5 degrees here last night. I'm not complaining, but many people were. It doesn't normally get that cold until the middle of winter, and even then not all that often.
Summer has been unusually erratic here too - it came earlier than usual, and it may end earlier than usual. I mean, thunderstorms in the middle of April?!
how'd it get a whack like that though?
Reversed into something - twice?
I've seen bigger dents on aircraft, though by that stage they usually become what's known in the industry as 'holes'
!!
on that note, must sleep. night sir.
Tutty bye
Good night Mr C.
See ya later folks.
Yah! My local Chapters (Picture Amazon) finally got the April issue of F1 Racing sometime between the 19th and today...
That page 22 thing still going on?
I was just at my local Chapters over the weekend and they still have about 8 copies of the March issue.
It's still going on at http://drop.io/meandpage22
Doohickey health related to Mr. C's?
Thank God it's back - my finger was getting worn out from scrolling all the way to the bottom of the daily post on my iPod!
:D Good thing I've never needed to use it during the blackout. :)
So after avoiding my feed reader for two days not to spoil the F1 & MotoGP result, I had to declare 'feed bankruptcy' last night at 10pm CET. This morning (8am CET) I have 200 items! B'stards!
Hahahahaha! :D Nice way to start the day. :P
What's this? Bernie is still open to returning to Silverstone?
And he thinks McLaren will just get a slap on the wrist. Thanks to the Hamilton-Mosley alliance, no doubt.
Bernie talks to Ed Gorman
I hope the manufacturers are putting pressure on Bernie to keep it mild - that's the only way they're gonna listen!
Daimler and Mercedes have been doing a lot of that - and it seems to be working - sort of. I still think Lewis aligning himself to Max is the biggest reason why McLaren will be saved from more punishment. It worked for Schumacher, it will work for Hamilton.
The fact that Mercedes are not happy with the situation and supply three teams gives them some clout, too...
Good point made there. But Max has Cosworth power waiting in the wings, so I'm don't think that's his biggest consideration right now.
F1 has been wooing the manufacturers for years though. Those in power want all the manufacturers to stay in the sport
I think it's 'had', not 'has'. Max probably doesn't like the idea of manufacturers unifying themselves against him. All the current regulations or those being proposed - engine freeze, budget caps, etc - go against the reason why they'd compete in the sport.
So back to the garagiste it is then.
Yep - back to the garagiste it is. How odd, though, to see LDM and Ferrari, siding with the garagistes!
*celebrates*
Morning guys, just saw another Brawn 1-2 on BATrarer, yay :D Lou's car must be an absolute beast, our aim was to get myself a win and Lou started 12th in her car, myself on pole, and she got the win. Madness! But 1-2 in any order = happy lukeh :D
Off to uni now... *waves*
Enzo will be turning in his grave on that one!
Well done! And this is at Hungary?!
Well done, and happy doodling! Can you draw me '5 pints of awesome man' and his nemesis, whoever that may be?
Yep, Hungarian GP. A case of Jenson Buttonitis from Lou's car I think :P
Oh yeah - he'd be very disappointed to see his protege side with the others and go against the FIA - who he always aligned himself with.
We shall see how bored I get ;)
:D Hahaha! And to think Lou's at uni while all this is happening... I guess she's extended her championship lead?
Just texted her now to let her know, it's just strangely ausing how it turned out considering last night we were saying I'm more likely to get ym first win in the car there. But any 1-2 in any order = woooooot! I believe she's back in the lead now, yep :)
*strangely amusing
anyways, see you guys in a few hours :)
That was a champion's drive!
Later, Lukeh.
18% Don't Understand the Term 'Broadband'
Interesting research - a lot of people seem to use the Net without really knowing how it works per se. It's kinda like TV now - most people just take it at face value without going into specifics.
Bah, I'm sure you're cheating somehow :P
Another gutting race for Torro Rosso. Our car ran like a dream at he start of the season and now they are falling to bits!
Maybe Red Bull don't want to help you anymore. ;)
They don't now they are beating us!
They're gonna sell you as soon as they can!
To Paul Stoddart! :D Hahahaha!
Bah! It could be worse I guess, I could be in a Renault :P
Thanks to the problems of BMW in the actual season, we have no way near as much pace anymore. I can't believe we held on to third and fourth!
At least if you drive a Renault you can't see the outside from inside!
Haha. Thankfully, in batracer they have only been on the track for a few laps anyway! :P
Well done! That said, I don't think BMW's real-world fightback will be in time for you to benefit... :O
That reminds me - I must finish my FR stats tonight. I have some interesting results!
Oooh... sounds good! :D
Very true, I think at best we can hope to hang on to second. Although Al and myself managed to finish first in the constructors with Ferrari in the 1986 season.
This will be harder than that, I think. At least Ferrari had some pace in 1986 - they were still the 4th fastest car out there that year. This time, BMW is behind Brawn, RBR, Toyota, McLaren, and Ferrari.
I know, we have to rely on the other teams not performing and pick up as many points as we can. Damn BMW and their slump.
Not to mention that cars are more reliable now than they were in '86 - makes this seem even more difficult in comparison.
I just checked the GRID laptimes on the wiki for last week. Havw we got a world record holder in our ranks???!
Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
I thought you knew that already - isn't Dom's time marked as the world-best time? At least that's what I saw on the screenshot.
Morning guys. Now just 14 points off Lou and Al. Just gotta keep chipping away at it.
Nope, had internet issues for the last few days so didn't get a chance to look. If we've got someone setting WR times then I definitely don't stand a chance! :P At least we are in a better can this week though.
Sure it wasn't an offline WR?
Didn't know such a thing existed.
My cousin gets pretty serious about GRID - apparently he destroys controllers throwing them against the wall!
If you set a time when you're not connected to XBL, it counts as a "personal WR" if you like.
haha, just realised I said we are in a better can this week. I obviously meant to say car but I think can suits that Lacetti a bit better!
Ah, that's less cool, but a bloody good time all the same.
Something I've never done, though I did come close playing Mario Kart a few weeks ago. Those wrist straps really do work.
Anyone listened to the FIF1 podcast? It's amazing how many excuses they made:
- Webber was too far back when Sooty started his lap
- Alonso tangled with someone and slowed Sooty up in front of Webber.
- The team didn't want to radio Sooty as they didn't want to disturb his concentration because he was about to start a lap
- The team didn't have enough time to prepare for the stewards
- The team didn't think Webber would have made it into Q2 anyway
- Webber didn't want a penalty, Red Bull did.
Wah Wah Wahhh! Sooty still drove dangerously and should have reacted accordingly. Just accept the punishment and don't make excuses!
I did think it looked like Alonso had slowed a bit, but even then he wasn't that near Sutill.
Morning all. Ahh, the Doohickey. :)
Morning Christine. How's it going? Is the big man feeling any better? :)
This was the Force India Team Manager. Naturally he thought the penalty was harsh!
Morning and goodbye. Off to work, speak to y'all later.
The Newhickey works well!
You missed it too, I see. ;)
Re: Force India and Sutil, was it Ian Phillips giving the excuses? Very poor of them, they should've just let it go and moved on... Did they mention anything about Massa-Fisichella?
On the road to recovery, I'd say.
Good to hear :)
Absolutely!
Who's the team manager? Sheesh, 3 places back for Force India don't really mean a lot - especially not where they were gonna start anyway.
No, it was Andy Stevenson, Team Manager.
You make him sound like he's Shaq. :D
So, quick and random question - who would you get to play you in the movie of your life?
Hmm, I'd say Ewan McGregor. I liked him in the Long Way Down series.
Myself, and it would be a reality-TV movie! :D
Ah yes, he seems like a nice chap :)
That's cheating!
Not if my movie had to be made on a shoestring budget!
Nooo, it's bound to be a blockbuster!
Hi guys, just stopping by to say hi, sitting at the exhibiton having nothing to do :-)
Hi wolf, how's it going?
it is fun to be at the exhibition that is so dead quiet, feels like being at malaysian gp during Saturday quali :-)
looked at calendar today, realized May 1st will be here soon. 15 years since May 1st 1994 ...
What exhibition is this?
Speaking of which, check out my Senna photo on dropio from yesterday...
Hong Kong Gift Fair
Great point. Lest we forget... :(
"Speaking of which, check out my Senna photo on dropio from yesterday..."
any quick link to that photo ?
Is it this one?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc01517-jpg
'
Yup
tried to upload this one to dropio but my mobile connection is a bit slow:
http://www.f1wolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/senna-san-marino-1994.jpg
this one is from Williams website, before the start of San Marino GP
"Yup"
nice shot
Thank my Dad - I was the 12-year old pressed against the fence ;)
woah, lots of comments to catch up on since the return of the doohickey!
We must never forget. Formula 1 safety has come a long way in nearly 15 years.
Indeed. Newhickey is all the craze! :D
to keep up I think I now have to give up both sleep AND my job
Or you can work from home, which is what I'm doing today. ;)
Did Adrian Newey design the Newhickey?
No, someone better than him did. :D
Have I missed anything over the last day and a bit?
The exchange across the road decided to stop all adsl connections. :(
Only access I had was over my phones....
1792 RSS entries to go through....
One word: newhickey. :D
Ah, you might also have to declare feed bankruptcy :(
Ooooh... :D
Will only take a couple of hours to sort though.
My god the net is slow today...
Forget that - the 10 servers I've got here just all started autoupdating at the same time. :D
You're still probably better off than me - my DSL keeps cutting out. Just plain annoying.
See - you ARE better off! :P
Well I'm having a chilled out morning listening to some more Mutemath on Spotify :)
Good on ya! Just finished watching the Graham Hill docu - was very good! I still prefer the Clark docu though. Other than Graham, Jim, and Jackie, are there any other MSP/BBC4 docus coming up?
Some insight into the new aero pieces brought to Bahrain:
http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2009/807/
See! Told you Williams had Red Bull rear wing end plates! :D
I will dig out the Senna shirt I wore that day. I must go to Brazil at some point in my life.
I just have to do some work now.
re-arranged my kit in my playroom yesterday - moved the amp for my PC's about and the tuner and SACD.
Also moved my big mediaserver into it's new home for the moment. Moving a 8U server case on your own isn't easy.
Already got my RatzenbergerSenna desktop on my PC
Stop it - you're already making me feel awful and it's not until the end of the week!
As the only guy on the grid now to have been at Imola 1994 - and having survived a huge shunt himself on the Friday - I'm sure they'll be asking Rubens Barrichello about it.
I feel for Rubens, being the only link left to that time. I know if I was him I would hate being questioned about the loss of my idol. 15 years sounds like ages but the pain is still felt by so many.
Anyone know where I can pick up a Senna wallpaper that's 1280x800?
Not to mention Rubens really had a special link to Ayrton. They became very close that year, 1994. I remember Rubens talking about Ayrton inviting him to go with him to Tokyo Disneyland after Aida - it showed a very human side of Ayrton, and he was willing to be open with young Rubens about it.
DC, too, had a special link with Senna before, having been with Williams as their 3rd driver and later moving up to take Senna's seat.
You're welcome to use my drop.io pic ;)
There's a site that had tons of hi-res Senna pics. Can't remember where it is now, though... Lemme check.
Ah, here it is:
Hi-res Senna gallery
In case this 3-page gallery of hi-res pics weren't enough:
Senna Flickr gallery
Cool, just picked a pic of Senna at Imola as a desktop. Will have a look at that Flickr page too.
Tell you what - shall I make some wallpapers for us all for May 1st? I have GIMP so I can knock them together pretty quickly :)
Would love that, Scott. :D A 'Senna in the Williams' portrait would be mighty!
OK, what size screen is your monitor?
I am a "Senna in the McLaren" girl of course :)
1280 x 800
Thank you!! :D
I wonder if anyone will request for Senna in the Toleman... :)
Dreadful car... :D
Lotus 97T - beautiful. :D
For myself and Journeyer:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sennawall1-1280x800-jpg
Amy, what's your screen size? I'll cobble together a McLaren one for you if you want :)
Don't suppose any of the sidepodcrowd are knowledgeable in employment law?
Scott - Brilliant. Thank you!
What's up?
:)
I have a vague knowledge of the basics, but nothing more. What's up?
I'm just wanting some advice
1280x800 :D
I'm all ears.
Cool, any particular year?
Boo, even the McLaren twitter is taunting me with Heikki and Legard.
Have you tried checking the site I invited you to last time? That's all I'll say. :)
a championship year would be good :)
I don't think you'd know about UK law though?
True.
I have got a lot of other stuff from there, but I didn't think about that! My share ratio is horrible because no one ever seems to be leeching stuff I'm seeding.
Just trying to find a shot of him a Monaco on that Flickr set.
Give it time - people will ask you to reseed soon enough. :)
I can email you through your PF address?
Morning all. Yay for newhickey!
Sure, go ahead. Let me know once you've sent it.
Or maybe you'd rather use IM?
Racing Line last year did a special on the 14 McLaren wins at Monaco, some lovely shots of Senna were in there. I always like to see him mentioned in their magazine :)
ok I'll email you my IM skype address
go ahead, by all means. :)
done :)
on my way :)
Amy - are you OK with a pic from 1993 or something? So of the pics I've been looking at get a little pixelated when you view their original size. :)
I'm not fussy :D
Scott,
Any chance you could make a nice Mclaren one in 1920x1200 for me?
http://www.f1wolf.com/2009/04/1994-san-marino-grand-prix-its-been-15-years.html
Link to F1 Wolf, if he didn't already ;)
Sure, any year in particular?
Hmm, not fussed as long as it's a Mclaren with an airbox :)
Awww, the 1988 no-airbox McLaren looks cool. :D
*sigh* More spam on drop.io.
Here ya are, Amy :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sennawall2-1280x800-jpg
You know you're popular when you're being spammed everyday
Scott,
I'll just have a picture - no writing is necessary ;)
Edward Norton (so I've been told)
McLaren, with Senna driving car 27 - really cool. I'm tempted to use that instead of Williams. or maybe i should use both - 1 at work, 1 at home. hmmm...
OK :)
Woah!
Ecclestone: We've got nothing against Silverstone
Eh? Since when?
Since yesterday. ;) Or better yet, since never. :D
Ecclestone: We’ve got nothing against Silverstone
Eh? Since when? {Commnet #255}
That's probably true. It's the BRDC he has an eternal grudge against...
thankyooooou. my internets is broken! thus i disappear from sidepodcast for the night :(
But they run Silverstone, so it's one and the same in my book.
Going so soon? G'night Amy.
That's like saying, I've nothing against Church, I just have an issue with Jesus
Bernie should just keep his mouth shut really, shouldn't he
Yep. Haha!
Next SidePodMeet-up (affiliates) opportunity is under review for June
The choices thus far are: Montreal, Balimore or Washington DC
I shall have to consult the listner's map tonight
not sure this has been discussed already. but james allen on jenson button:
"Every time Button enters the pits during practice he drives into his pit box, with the mechanics in the positions they would be in for a pit stop. He comes in and stops in position. But that is not where it ends, there is a brief pause on the radio and then Andrew Shovlin, Button’s race engineer will say, "Ten centimetres out.""
"Sometimes he comes in and you will hear Brawn himself say, "Perfect position Jenson.""
driving for brawn must be like night and day compared to driving for honda.
Hey, people, let the fun begin: just heard this rumour about Mercedes buying out Brawn and doing a BMW Sauber kinda thing. Because supposedly the Germans are tired of McLaren's strained relationship with the FIA and Monsieur Mad Max. The announcement they say is imminent which should also affect monsieur Hamilton's plans because he is rumoured to have a clause in his contract which allows him to walk out and away if McLaren is not linked to a manufacturer. It all disintegrates for McLaren this year. Or maybe not?
Mr C... Lovin' the newhicky :)
Any sources, or is this an inside rumour?
That's a HUGE rumor. Where did that come from?
Though that name is starting to stick, it does sound like something you'd get after a date when you're 15! :)
yay :)
Ha :)
Well my comment yesterday was:
So I'd pretty much have to be happy :)
We all (hearts) Doohickey v2
it's community tool, designed through a community thought process. if nothing else it highlights the strength of conversation.
Does the dropdown change when a new thread arrives? Just wondering for quick commenting on the run...
not yet.
Absolutely... Sorry my comment sounds like I'm taking credit... No way... It was everyones ideas melding together in a great way :)
i'd like to say something profound like... "there's no i in sidepodcast", except there is :(
There's also a me in sidepodcast which is you ;)
you can say 'there's no me in sidepodcast'... except your name IS 'me'. :P
It seems unbelievable that we wouldn't want to be placing the blame somewhere though. Very out of character.
*waves*
Afternoon guys and gals :)
Blame is different from credit! :D
Actually I think it shouldn't... Sorry not clear... It was me worrying that I would be in the quick comment box (which is going to be really handy in the white heat of live commenting) and then the thread changes and you don't notice which might lead to incorrect thread posting.
also true. although it could appear in the list without the selected thread actually changing?
You're missing it Christine. This time it's so big his blaming everyone ;)
hey lukeh.
Not here it isn't.
Yeah cool... Or maybe like when you have the comment box open it pauses incoming message updates. Maybe having that open would pause thread changes?
Well, it's that Portuguese guy called Luis Vasconcelos who hangs around F1 paddock sometimes. His article in Portuguese Autosport is called "Mercedes Covets Brawn". Quite imaginative.
He claims that the Germans will sell their shares to Mansour Ojjeh & Bahraini Mumtalakat Holding Company. And the guy says that he had contacted Mercedes people who confirmed that McLaren road car would not be powered by Mercedes engine.
Dunno, that's too much information. We'd need another insider to confirm that. Anybody?
could also work. automatic thread updates are a little while away.
this week am looking to get the post content appear in a lightbox, so there's still an opportunity to read and refer to blog posts, without leaving doohickey.
Perhaps this is the reason that McLaren Automotive has separated from the rest of the group - so they can choose whatever engine they like without upsetting anyone.
Maybe he should hire Ed Gorman as a consultant (or just tell the truth)?
http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/04/something-missing-at-team-hamilton
Daimler is going to present their cost saving plans to their employees this afternoon.
He's using the right names so far. McLaren car will be powered by a McLaren engine, I'm pretty certain.
But what's this guy's record in getting these kinds of things right? Sounds like a LOT of speculation to me.
Interesting, but I don't think any big F1 news will come out of it.
I've been sent the initial details of the PSRTV Announcer's Competition. I have to do a 5 minute sample of commentary over some footage.
50/50
Doohickey! where have you been? *mwa* *mwa* *mwa* don't ever leave me like that again
Oh. Hmmm. I think this is a lot of doo doo, to be honest. I'll believe it when I see it.
:D
We all make Mr C feel loved today. ;)
I'm certainly in the loving mood now :)
Im stuck on my brother's PC for a few hours till I go collect my laptop... this is an embarrassment to have. He has about 7 antivirus and firewall softwares (seriously, 7) all running alongside each other so I literally am getting a stupid amount of warnings with ANYTHING I do. The doohickey doesn't work on any browser because of all this bloody software going mental about it, he has them all set to strict and password protected, gah!!
Spent 20 minutes just scanning a picture to show you all because of all this crap...
the same...
He's paranoid! And you should never run 2 antivirus software at the same time - never mind 7! They'll just conflict with each other and eat up your processing time.
How on Earth did he manage to install all that? I get mad once a year when I have to install new Norton Antivirus (seems to work better than other things). I sometimes feel all these antivurus companies are writing all these bugs and viruses themselves just to make us spend money on their products.
I have to see that pic!
My Mother in Law uses Norman Sandbox because she paid for some security pack - it basically kills the computer! Basically rendered unusable!
kinda like norton anti-productivity suite then :)
I'll have to upload it tonight when I get my laptop back Gavin. Just getting to comment now has taken 10 minutes... *clenches stress ball*
All it is are my doodles from Uni today. It's kinda wayyyyyyyy over the top though... there is literally no more space on the A4 I had to draw on...
Yes. I'm loving the Newey-hickey BTW :D
Just been listening to Jenson's Bahrain diary. He reveals:
1. He's getting a house in Bahrain in a couple of months.
2. He suffered from clutch slip off the line at the start
3. He gained 14k's on the front straight when sizing up Lewis into Turn 1.
Hmm Bahrain. Must've seen Buemi's crib!
Haha! 14Ks! He got on Lewis' slipstream and took advantage of his KERS too. ;)
Newly uploaded on Flickr, but it's from Australia 2008:
Dannii and Jules - Partners In Crime
:D
seems that user is just uploading a bunch of f1-live images?
As in 'stuff the copyright infringement'?
Haha! If that's true, uh-oh...
as in, doesn't appear understand the first thing about copyright infringement.
:D
Le Mans?
Ooh, what's this?
Its from Bassano's earlier comment .. think it's to do with one of his trips abread though
Mind you, we could organise the friday trip to FOS at Goodwood?
Mind you its £33 per day for a general admission ticket
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/site/content/festivalofspeed/Welcome.aspx
I obviously have a problem with the phrase mind you
Or mabe .. I'm just trying to make it to next month's top 5
You're well on your way. :P
Dylan Moran. Very funny man.
Finally saw the BBC Bahrain coverage. Pretty good. And yep, Ray Charles was singing at the end. :D
anyone willing to hazzard a guess to what penalty McLaren will get tomorrow?
I'm scared.
(and I fixed my internet)
Suspended race ban, hefty fine. Maybe a minor points deduction.
Yay! You're back! :) Any penalty will be imposed on McLaren as a constructor. No penalties to the drivers - except for the suspended race bans.
so you think it's just a suspended ban?
cool :D
well, not cool that you are scared, of course
A good lashing?
Haha
Yup - and a hefty fine. A points deduction is also very much possible, but will probably only apply to constructor points, not driver points - ala Spygate.
Agreed.
I just wish it was a team I don't support for once. But noooo, it's always McLaren.
What do you think are our chances of this being the last lame distracting political F1 event of the season? I think 0%
they'll have to be fined something, if only to cover the costs of convening the meeting.
aside from that though, they'll probably have to make a public apology and no more will be done. ron's gone. mission accomplished.
I think nothing will happen to the drivers. A fine would send out the wrong message when Max wants to cut costs so I think a points deduction of WCC points
problem with the deduction of constructors points, is it also hurts mercedes, and then had nothing to do with anything.
I think you are right
For Max, cutting costs is fining a team $10 million instead of $100 million. Times are a-changing! :D
neither did Heikki, so I hope the punishment evades him.
they had nothing to do with spygate, either, but they got excluded anyway. that's a lot worse than the current situation, since merc engines are powering the brawns too.
there's an argument that says, said dossier contained ferrari engine data too. that could've / would've helped mercedes. this doesn't involve them at all.
i do wonder if max wouldn't like the idea of pushing mercedes into the arms of brawn though.
Why wouldn't Mercedes want to support Brawn, they are doing well and there is a feelgood factor about Brawn thats currently lacking at McLaren
the should, and maybe they will. how else are they going to get a talent like brawn?
i just think it might make max's day if that happened. even more so if he was the architect of it.
not maybe - they definitely will. right now, brawn is their best chance at winning a constructors title for the first time since 98.
trust me, it will. ;)
and then McLaren can become the new Williams :(
that's short term thinking though. next year brawn maybe nowhere.
That depends on how Whitmarsh does - and if they can keep Lewis. At this point, if McLaren want to survive without Mercedes, they'd have to attract a big name - like old-school Mercedes rival Audi, perhaps...
mclaren have a much better business plan than williams did. although with the hybrid technology frank is finally getting it.
i don't think so - not with virgin money and merc input - and when has a team with ross brawn in it ever been off the pace?
I'm reading a fantastic book at the moment with lots of stories of the early days of these teams, it's a good reminder that they've come through bad times before.
is it too little, too late though for Williams? all that hybrid tech is useless with standardized or banned KERS next year. his best hope now is the budget cap.
last year... honda!
banning kers requires a unanimous agreement, right? frank has x2 vote.
i'm thinking about outside of f1 though, something that ron gets, but frank has been less interested in.
x1 sorry.
I was going to say that but he inherited that Lemon
that was year 1! :P he had no input in the design of the car, and he knew that - which is why he duly dumped 08 and focused on 09. even then, he managed to get them a podium they had no business getting.
why x2?
frank was never really interested in it, and i don't think he'll ever be. ron is a racer and a businessman, frank is a racer through and through.
i'm just not convinced by brackley's ability to land sponsors. earth dream came about because they couldn't do it and still with a massive lead over the competition and wins under their belts... where the hell is the money?
so far, branson... possibly.
disagree. hybrid technology is all about the business.
nope - it was always about F1. had there been no KERS, would he have bought it? no way.
and if it was indeed being run as a business, why haven't we heard anything about it yet?
Afternoon all, how are we?
i'll throw that right back at ya. if it was about the racing... why haven't they raced it yet?
ask nick fry - that's still his job. :P
that's more or less a certainty now, i'd think. he was in bahrain today, so there must be at least some progress in that deal. remember, there is still a possibility of a virgin buy-out, so if that is true, that may explain why there are few other sponsors.
because it's not worth running it. ask BMW, Ferrari, and Renault. at this point, with KERS getting standardized next year anyway, they have to focus their limited funding to develop other parts of the car.
and that's why brawn may not be successful next year.
sure, but right now... it's not.
yes it is, ask lewis.
just putting the world to rights. yourself?
And Piquet!!
maybe, but with a budget cap looming, this probably won't play as big a role as we think it is right now. and remember, the money branson is paying now isn't being used for 2009, it's being saved for 2010. this is still a fully-funded honda operation.
he's the only guy who can make it work without any problems. how about the rest? he's the exception, not the rule.
and Rubens' hand?
Oooh... :P
Playing Rainbow Six, killing some terrorists. So I guess I'm also putting the world to rights, just in a more direct way.
Piquet may be able to use it defensively, but he hasn't made much use of it to overtake. And Flavio wants it gone anyway.
hekki made it work just fine in china?
kimi wouldn't have been in the points without it last weekend.
Rosberg wants KERS too. His post-race quotes basically said that even with a really good start it was hopeless trying to keep any places off the grid with KERS cars around.
kers is hugely important. and you're wrong if you think otherwise.
the teams without it are just about surviving, but all drivers want it. really want it.
i'd argue it's cost him more points than it's given him. had to switch it off in malaysia, wrecked his car's balance in australia, was of little or no benefit to him in china.
perhaps, but it was no good for him in bahrain.
Theirs may be unreliable but Ferrari admit without it they have nothing.
Exactly, after one race without it Felipe was demanding he have it for the next one.
Let's see the Constructors Standings.
Brawn - no KERS
RBR - no KERS
Toyota - no KERS
McLaren - KERS
Renault - KERS (sometimes)
BMW - KERS (sometimes)
Combined scores:
non-KERS: 104
KERS: 22
I wouldn't call that 'just about surviving'.
Then it duly cost him a result in Bahrain. Ah, the irony of it all.
Steven Roy, where are you when I need you? :P
I guess this was how he felt during the whole refuelling debate... :D
the cars with the most advanced kers systems, are lacking in aero, so that chart tells you nothing.
on track the kers drivers have an advantage. ferrari would be nowhere without it, renault too. bmw, are suffering from a general lack of development. lewis however likely wouldn't have scored a point without it.
But the KERS teams have had other problems downforce etc, for the most part their KERS systems have worked, particualy McLaren.
you're wrong about that too ;)
exactly.
Exactly, lets face it without KERS Lewis would have been no way near Trulli in Australia and would have avoided liegate. :P
It's worked for McLaren, that's true to an extent (it works for Lewis but not as well for Heikki). But we've seen tons of KERS-related issues, not all related to reliability. Kubica struggled with it when he tried running it in China and Bahrain. Raikkonen and Massa have both had their KERS fail.
Given how the cars fell off and the number of SCs we got, he still would've been right with Trulli. You have to consider that without KERS, there's more free ballast to move around, so it's easier to hit the right car balance.
so why do all the drivers want it? because they're helpless without it.
funny how me and steven roy end up siding with each other on such big issues against the rest of you lot. :P
That's to do with bad KERS systems rather than KERS being bad (if that makes sense). Ferrari with KERS are bad, Ferrari without KERS are terrible.
But it is cutting edge technology and F1 is trying to make it smaller, lighter, faster. There's bound to be reliability issues. When it works, though, and it will work more and more, it leaves the drivers without out for dust.
McLaren have the best KERS system, hence no failures. Yet.
Kubica's weight is the biggest problem, and Heidfield has been using it without issue. BMW's problem is they haven't worked on their car and are relying on the Spain updates.
Ferrari's KERS I guess is the exception.
Why have teams develop their own KERS this year only to standardise it the year after?
but if they were to choose between improved aero or KERS, they'd pick the aero in a heartbeat. They're only choosing KERS because it's the short-term fix to be competitive. The better long-term fix is to improve their aero. Brawn, Red Bull, and Toyota will stay competitive even without KERS.
It was a joke :P
Kimi was doing fine without KERS in Sepang until they called him in for wets...
quick ad-hoc poll then.
i believe every car will be fitted with kers by silverstone (in june). does anyone think there will still be cars on track at that time sans-kers?
Oooh :)
The KERS team suffered because they developed KERS rather than focus on the aero as the non-KERS teams have.
No, it won't - they'll all have standardized KERS next year, anyway. And those teams with advanced KERS will still have to fix their aero.
Force India were supposed to start using McLaren's KERS by Spain - one wonders why they haven't officially confirmed it yet.
Yes, but not by choice.
Afternoon all
Sounds like the deathbed for the lclt.
yes - by choice. it's almost may and we haven't heard a peep about it from the non-kers teams.
I don't think Brawn will run KERS at any point this year. Williams and Toyota will probably join the KERS gang possible Red Bull/Torro Rosso.
Look at Piquet - even with his rubbishness he was able to hold off Barrichello who was in a much faster car for two laps! That fight completely justifies KERS because had Barrichello been able to use it he would have killed him!
Brawn.
would be ironic though - if Brawn do indeed pick up KERS, they'll probably use Macca's system - which is the best of the lot right now...
Ah ok, I was talking about this year. To me, standard parts are a completely different matter.
noooo. lclt upgrades coming soon and they doth rock!
They really do.
Can the Brawn car fit KERS, I thought they couldn't?
yay. If it gets mr c saying doth rock, they must be really good
It can, but they won't - I think they took KERS into consideration because they started working on their car so early.
are you kidding? honda was the first team to run kers on a formula 1 car. they have more development experience than anyone else. did that information just fall out of their heads?
I was under the impression that Toyota and Brawn both were not going to use KERS this year? Maybe toyota might, but if Brawn stay in front they may not bother with it...
The teams who developed KERS have shot themselves in the foot in my opinion. Spent all that money only on research and developement only for standardised KERS the year after.
they've tested it more than anyone else, yet decided not to run it anyway, and don't look like running it anytime soon. there MUST be a very good reason for that.
Agreed.
i would put good money on a very fed up rubens barichello badgering ross brawn for kers right now.
So much for costing cutting :D
I wonder if they still have access to it? Or did Honda take it with them when they left? Wouldn't have thought so since they only took the company itself out of F1 and not the factory.
Surely the teams can't be that stupid then?
they still have it with them.
Remember that they had to shoehorn a new engine into the car at the last minute. KERS will have fallen down the priority list a bit.
Cost cutting.
I apologise for my spelling failing so badly.
no one saw standardized kers coming. blame it on max.
The budget cap that's being proposed can realistically go to as much as $80million if they wanted to. It might seem like a lot, but it's only 1/3 of the budgets pretty much everyone is using now.
Why not use it then? They've probably been working on that system as long as their car.
so now the engine is in - they should at least be discussing the possibility of running it by now. not even a peep from them on it.
because ross brawn does one thing very well. he's makes reliable cars. he has systems and processes that make sure that every car is reliable as it can be.
kers will undoubtedly come. mclaren have more pre-season aero data than any other team. if they catch brawn and have a decent kers system. what's ross gonna do?
as chris said, they've had to shoehorn a new engine in - KERS directly connects to the engine.
Doesn't mean anything if Brawn have no money left to make a major development of the car...
So I guess a redesign of the system to fit it in would take a considerable amount of time and money.
i'm pretty sure they have a fully developed kers system already.
we heard them running it at the silverstone test last summer. it was already working back then.
assuming they DO catch ross. that's not a given at this point.
and remember, kers isn't a no-brainer. you have to sacrifice a lot of ballast to get that in - and it will probably take away the brawn's ability to take care of its tyres. i still think they won't run it.
Fair enough then.
I may be two days late but I'm finally watching the Bahrain forum :D
true.
I feel for Red Bull they get Renault's KERS and Torro Rosso would get Ferarri's :D
haha! just watched it today myself.
I still haven't seen it. Hopefully I'll get time before the champions league match tonight but I haven't seen Match of the Day yet either...
tonight already?! who's up tonight?
Chelsea vs. Barcelona
Barcelona and Chelsea.
Usless competition anyway...
Why useless? ;)
Just want to say the new doohickey works much better here at Uni whilst I'm in a lecture :D
How so?
oh dear!
If there is a competiton when Newcastle United have been in the Champs League more times then Spurs, then its useless
also works much better here in bed when I should be asleep :D
Typical. Well, you're going to miss out on a great gametonight then!
It isn't that intresting so not having that bad of an effect :P
I was under the impression that Honda did have that information but those people still work for Honda not Brawn as they were part of the engine development team. Just like the McLaren KERS is actually the Mercedes KERS.
And my guess is that Mercedes KERS isn't in the same place as the Honda's one would have been. And changing it isn't trivial during a testing ban. And Brawn doesn't have a lot of money.
Mercedes might be keener to do the work for them though - but I thought we'd heard it couldn't be easily adapted.
I'll still watch it though. It is football.
Mr C said they already ran it at the first Barca test. Are you sure on that, Mr C?
i didn't say that. i said silverstone last summer.
i was there, however, i didn't see a kers device, but other teams suggested the strange noise the honda was making was a result of earlier kers trials.
I recall Ant saying on one of his commentaries that he had tested a car with KERS
he did too. good memory.
oh... if that's the case, then Brawn may not have much of a KERS to fit in. not that they're hurting right now for it...
Exactly. I know the drivers will be asking for it. But Brawn is actually quite cautious I think.
honda were also the first team to turn up in the pitlane with the big red/green warning domes sitting atop the roll hoop.
i can't find a pic but lou will remember them. bmw have since copied the idea, by honda were months ahead.
Ross Brawn already made it clear that his team weren't in a hurry to adopt KERS on their car and would only take into consideration at a later date. So if they are going to run it, it won't be until much later in the season.
i remember it too. you used it on one of your KERS articles.
Honda had already developed and track-tested its KERS system last year, using a flywheel system developed in conjunction with Flybrid. Unlike any other team, this was to be a pure flywheel solution mounted inside the front of the fuel tank, running off the front of the engine. This would not have required the same cooling and complex packaging demands as the electric or flywheel\electric solutions seen on its rivals.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73700
And that's a BIG if.
my guess is it will depend on the next race. if brawn are still ahead after all the updates then it'll be less of an issue.
agreed.
Also just read a story which included Brawn saying the only reason they went for Merc engines and not Ferrari is because the Merc engine actually fitted into the car and the Ferrari unit didn't.
Ooooh... In retrospect, that may have proved to be a good decision in terms of the horses in the engine.
Well I say the Ferrari engine didn't fit when what I actually ment was the Merc unit fitted easier than Ferrari's did, so going with MB was the logical option.
AND that they'd decided on the engine around Christmas time last year!
That makes sense - the engine was ready long before the MBO was finalized.
Back with KERS, Brawn said that the system was the last thing on their mind when they were getting the car ready, which I can understand when it was a race against time to get the car fully functioning and track tested before Melbourne.
found it. i heart drop.io.
and here's the sister image. those were uploaded around the time of the italian gp.
Just reading another story saying that if Brawn want KERS, they WILL have to buy it from McLaren.
do they give reasons?
so the 2008 one they developed is useless now. but McLaren's KERS is the best one out there right now, so it's not all bad.
It dosent surprise me, they have to pay for their engines, so would be hte ssame for other stuff too.
Howdy all :) how is everyone? :D
What's surprising is that they can't use the one they developed themselves anymore.
Oh, bloody brilliant...
http://www.f1sa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12892&Itemid=219
I know it's GMM, but...
Another GMM:
http://www.f1sa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12894&Itemid=219
I like
this third option as well. Possibly fitting for Ferrari.
:D
Hehehe
until scott finds a source, it's not the case.
our understanding is the flybrid system fits to the drive shaft, not the engine.
Hullo again everyone, back on laptop =]
As I was saying earlier, my 3 hour lecture this morning resulted in once again a series of doodles that happily took up my time :)
Isn't Brawn also using McLaren's driveshaft ala Force India?
I heart 5 pints of Awesome Man.
lemmings!
no.
Even worse for weight distribution :(
yup, well the flywheel can be positioned anywhere. but it's additional weight at the rear.
What I meant was that if Brawn want it, they'll have to pay more to McLaren to be able to use. Can't see a reason in the story I found it in though. Only thing I can find which is close to a reason is that it mentions Brawn's agreement with Merc to be for engines only.
I like Flavio Snailatore :D
ahh, right. yes, that i agree with.
that assumes macca want to sell it to them though.
I don't see a reason why they wouldn't.
But doesn't that give the impression that they just want the money for it rather than help out Brawn?
because if brawn don't have kers, mclaren might stand a chance of catching / beating them.
why would they want to help brawn? they wanted help them stay in the championship when there was a chance they'd have to run three cars. why would they want to help them beat them??
But isn't McLaren's problem with the car a lack of downforce rather than if Brawn has a KERS system or not?
that sounds like something ferrari would do, not mclaren. ;)
Exactly.
I can think of 37
F1 news: Senna film to start shooting in May
http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2009/4/9279.html
This makes me think - would McLaren still be asking for more money for Brawn to buy their KERS system if it was the former beating the latter instead?
what are you lot smoking this afternoon?
why would martin sit there thinking "that brawn is a nice chap, i wonder if he would like our kers system this weekend?"
OOOH! :D
:D
if that was his line of thought, then he shouldn't have allowed mercedes to sell their engines to brawn.
not at all, they could have been another Force India. Engines aren't everything, whereas the only decent KERS system would be quite the advantage.
of course he should. bernie mentioned 'three cars per team to make up the numbers'.
no team wanted that.
agreed. no-one expect this kind of performance from brawn.
and i just realised saying KERS system is unnecessary.
do you guys honestly think bernie and max will just allow mclaren not to sell their kers to brawn? i really doubt that.
VERY unneccessary.
;)
yes. they cannot force them to.
having said that... i don't think that brawn WANT it!
Whoever heard of a system system? ;)
McLaren have done more than enough for Brawn already.
this is bernie and max we're talking about.
on that, i agree with you.
totally. over and above the call of duty. and come to that, so has vijay.
imagine how he'd feel if brawn got the macca kers?
you're wrong journeyer. max and bernie cannot force a team to sell a piece of technology to a competitor. f1 would collapse if that were true.
not to mention an optional piece of technology.
Maybe not entirely. As I mentioned, the system was the last thing on their mind when they were getting the car ready, but they still haven't ruled it out, just decided to consider it at a later date. But if it gets to the situation where they win 3 out of the next 4 races, as they have done already, then there'd be no need for it unless Brawn want to take that risk. Knowing Ross, he's no risk taker.
force india are getting the KERS first (possibly as early as Barcelona), so they cannot deny brawn the right to have it too.
Source?
bull****
how do i explain this...
there's a reason why max and bernie can and would pressure mclaren to sell their kers to brawn - both are contending for the championship. just because brawn are beating mclaren means that they'll clam up and not sell their kers to brawn anymore. if they're selling it to force india as a customer team, they have to be open to selling to brawn too.
ervenningh alil :)
I just didn't want to miss out on the elbow typing fun... ;)
ugh - i have a source for this. just a sec.
not the force india thing! this bit:
"so they cannot deny brawn the right to have it too."
am ending my part of the conversation right now. your arguments are beyond mental, i shall returneth later.
bye all.
exactly, if they had a deal with Brawn to supply them with an engine, they have fulfilled that. Their deal with FI was for more, so FI get more.
oh - i thought you were referring to scott.
for scott.
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/03/27/force-india-kers-playing-a-weighting-game/
I can see where you're coming from - because the Merc deal only includes engines, that doesn't mean Brawn automatically have the right to request Macca's system.
t'ra mr c!
must read up on what you're all talking about..
their deal with FI was for an engine and a driveshaft - and that's it. So it's still the same scenario between FI and Brawn - if FI can buy it from McLaren, Brawn should be able to buy it too.
Later, Mr C.
that seems like a good idea, no idea what the ec is gannin on.
(I love you lclt)
We're all arguing over Brawn and McLaren's KERS system. There's a link in there somewhere ;)
:D There's still a reason for it after all...
Later, Mr C :)
Oooh links are always good! :P
Time to go comment swimming then
We started with whether or not Brawn will need to use KERS, then we moved to the topic of whether McLaren can deny selling their KERS to Brawn should they want it.
It's times like these I realize why I end up topping the talkative board. Hehe.
:D
According to the Doohickey, you're leading on comments today by quite a margin. I now have a chance to pass Mr C now he's gone off ;)
ooh my alarm goes off in 4 hours, that's me outta here!
I'm sure someone in a Formula 3 car has gone faster than that?
Bye Amy! :)
Apparently it's an offline record. In other words, it beats the time that is pre-programmed into the game.
Yup.
Must have been offline when I did that lap then.
I think I remember seeing a 1:07 lap being the WR...
That would be down to my debate with Mr C and me working from home. :)
yeah, that rings a bell
Oh i see... Makes sense now. :)
Just wondering seeing as games have been brought up, has anyone tried that new New Star GP game you can download for the PC? I know Joe knows about it but it's a brilliant little game...
Will be sleeping in a bit. Mr C, you can come back now... :D
But seriously, Lou and Steven Roy *might* slip out of the top 5 today. Paging Scott, RG, and Amy... :D
Have got the demo, nifty little game indeed. Just waiting to be less lazy to fork out the tenner to buy it
Just wanted to comment on the Senna documentary:
It looks very, very interesting - and it has everyone's support. There are lots of Senna docus out there, though - I don't know how this movie will rise above all those. What is that 'something new' they can bring to the table?
I played the demo once and just thought 'must.have.this.' Even better now within minutes of buying it last week I found a database with all the right names etc... :)
Maybe if it drops a pound or two you should totally consider it, horribly addictive when you get the full season :P
oooh. Sure will. Heard about its addictiveness. Remember having to drive a lap around Melbourne in the wet on slicks to win the race after being second for so long, did it as well.
:D I'm on it!
So, greatest F1 driver ever?....
That'll do it :P
Oh no, here we go again! :D RG...?
On that note, will probably call it a night early. :) Good night!
I've got homework, too much homework, yes, and revision...
Erm, Pedro Diniz
Night Journeyer. :)
Pfft, just another one of those drivers with no talent and a rich daddy.
night journeyer
Aww, shame! Paging Jackie as well. :)
141 comments... not bad, not bad at all for a day's work...
Bye Journeyer :)
I don't know how I could ever get back up there again...
2600 comments?? I basically need to find a way to stop everyone but me getting on Autosport...
I vote Deletraz!
Underrated. :P
Hearting quick comments from the train :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-73
hey everyone, just got home from school. I had a 2hr30min psychology mock today :( i ended up writing around 13 pages... my hand still hurts. This afternoon's been fun though, we went to a uni fair thing and i managed to get a lot of uni prospectuses. just flicking back through the comments quickly...
*cough* i believe he bought the actual plot of land in about 2007 and has been planning/ having it built since then... so it's due to be finished within a few months ;)
Jules was once Danii's PA. it's how she got into f1 really, cause Danii went out with Jacques Villeneuve i believe.
I so so so so hope Mercedes don't buy out Brawn, it would be awful and horrible and it wouldn't be the same. plus brawn are a nice small lovely team, mercedes would ruin that.
atm Brawn have no interest in investing in KERS. They are choosing to concentrate on upgrades and sorting out the fact their car isn't so good on low fuel runs.
good luck :P i'll be revising and looking at uni courses, may be around though.
Also, am catching up with comments on ye olde comments, since when did links to drop.io appear in a box like in doohickey?
how many is alot? we had a competition to get the most prospectus, i got 35 i believe.....my back really did hurt....
woot, the joys of ucas. HAVE FUN :P
C'mon... Got to be Ide...
i have 2 bags worth..
i've not started ucas first.... still don't know what i want to do at uni let alone where...
Lou you're never going to keep your leaderboard status up with combined replies like that ;)
Bad times
:(
But any freebies is good! :P
ahhh shame ;)
i fear you may have discovered my plan :P
yeah, although unis are giving less freebies at uni fairs now, i wanted to get lots of pens etc, but only got prospectus's boo
God the amount of pens you get after a uni fair I found was absurd. Although I did get cookies and sweeties at ones i went to :D
yep there were only prospectus's and bags today, no pens or anything..
What time will we know about Mclaren's escapades tomorrow?
Can you all do me a huge favour and vote for cat #3 (a mate of mine) here:
http://www.zmonline.com/beautybeast/finalcatvote.html
Ta muchly ;)
If the diffuser hearing is anything to go by, whenever they feel like it.
Coo-ee
I love 5 Pints of Awesome Man!
Journeyer is right. KERS is a disaster and a bad idea. Just like I always said. The only people who want it on their cars are the people with bad cars who are desperate for any kind of performance they can get and if that is just somethig that stops people overtaking them so be it.
What's "Priss the prent button" refer to?
It's because we are right
Toyota said that the F1 KERS was more primitive than the KERS they used in the 24 hours of Tokachi. No I had never heard of that race either.
Our lecturer is Swedish and he could NOT say 'Press the Print' correctly. :P
Absolutely. Brawn and Red Bull are not going to waste their time with KERS. I would say that the driver who wins the championship this year will do it without having had KERS on th car.
Swedish? Pah - they're like Danes but crappier!
Yeah it's not too bad!
We have had years of slow cars holding off fast cars. Murray Walker spent decades saying catching is one thing and passing is another.
I nelieve FIF1's Mercedes contract prevents Brawn getting that system
McLaren ran KERS a decade before anyone. There is a reason why they are doing it better than anyone else
They didn't know there was going to be a standard system when they started testing
Develop his aero so that he can stay in front this year and use the info as the basis for next year's car when they have standard KERS. Standard KERS is like putting a green stripe on the tyres.
They would have to install it into the Merc engine though which may not be as easy as taking out the Honda engine and replacing it with the Merc motor was.
Just watching a video of it on YT. Looks really cool! :D
They need to increase minimum car weight and perhaps the amount of KERS to be used per lap so there is more performance advantage and therefore a reason for the teams to use the system.
They are both Magnetti Marelli systems with little difference between them
It's really fun to play with the 360 pad, like an F1 Micro Machines :)
Even Max can't fine someone $100 million for taking technology from a team then a few months later make it compulsory for a team to sell technology. My understanding of the Brawn / Mercedes deal is that it had to be for engines only because FIF1 have a contract which makes them the sole customer for all the other McLaren and Merc goodies including KERS.
So if MacLaren discover some aero miracle at the next race that makes them marginally faster than Brawn they have to give Brawn KERS which gives away their advantage? That doesn't make sense.
Is the man-flu causing you to use archaic verb endings?
Ooooh, forgot about Jenson's Bahrain diary...
*listens*
Yes but that was clearly because of KERS - look at how Piquet suddenly left him for dead on the straight!
Never gonna happen.
:D
The problem is not the minimum weight or KERS really. The problem is the stupid tyre spec. All they have to do is make the front tyres narrower which is what Bridgestone want to do for next season but because of the stupid testing ban they can't develop tyres during the season which means the teams won't have 2010 spec tyres for winter testing which is beyond stupid.
Looks like I have been talking to myself.
I'm still here, I just have nothing interesting to say :D
What he said.
Ahh, still nothing.
Although I am intruiged by this Ayrton Senna movie that was mentioned earlier... that could be very good watching.
Or at least I hope it will be, and not an overdramatised money cow.
The idea that Mansour Ojjeh is going to buy back shares he sold doesn't make any sense. Same goes for Mumtalakat. Mercedes own 40% of the company, Mumtalakat 30%, Ojjeh 15% and Ron Dennis 15%. Dennis Ojjeh and Mumtalakat have a voting pact so why would any of them buy shares in an economy like this when they have total power anyway. Mercedes have road cars using McLaren as a premium brand and want to supply engines and other technology into McLaren Automotive. Why would they walk away from that and give it to a direct competitior. Equally they could not run Brawn as a premium brand and there is no road car payback to be had.
This is all bull that Merc ar leaking to make sure the FIA judgement goes the right way. After the FIA announce that Mclaren will get no real punishment and praise Mclaren for the action they have taken Merc will say that they always had faith that the FIA would see things that way and they continue to view McLaren as a valued partner yah di yah id yah.
The world will keep spinning like nothing happened beyond a few guys in blazers having a nice day out in Paris on expenses and tons ofcarbon dioxide will have been neddlessly produced.
Glad to see all the stuff I said was so dull no-one has a comment to make about it. So glad i bothered. :)
There was supposed to be a feature film being made about him with Anotonio Banderas playing Senna but I guess it disappeared down the plug hole.
Sounds like my job... ;)
It wasn't dull, I just couldn't find any response to it.
another rumour for today...
"Could Bernie be about to take over the lease at Donington Park. Apparently he's already made a move to buy Donington Hall next to track..."
http://twitter.com/DoningtonF1/status/1641343134
So... Bernie DOES want a british gp?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/fr-stats-xls
My FR Stats post-Bahrain. Enjoy ;)
Interesting... I mean, it could be anything with Bernie. ne week he says something, then he'll contradict that and say something else, then say something else the week after so we'll just have to wait and see. I read a rumour earlier today that construction at donington has been stopped but I don't think there's any truth to it... haven't seen any information anywhere legarding it...
Oh my god, legarding it?!!
*cries*
Was that on purpose?
I really wish it was.. :/
The 2010 British GP will be at Silverstone. Everything that has happened and everything that will happen is to turn the screw on the BRDC to get them to put up more money. Bernie may well buy some local property to convince the BRDC to cough up more and to sucker Gillet into a situation where his default fee increase.
There will not be a GP at Donington in the next decade. It is impossible.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
so the fact that dad is kinda refusing to let me go to what we think could be the last british gp is not a big deal? as it wont be the last british gp?
It will not be the last British GP at Silverstone. Definitely.
wouldn't be surprised if we see Silverstone next year but Stevens definitely a lot better to say this than myself, all my statement is based from is a hunch inside me, I just dont see Dongington being ready
i'll remind you of that next year if there is no british gp :P
Evening all.
If Adrian Newey designed the Doohickey, it would be called the Neweyhickey.
When Honda left F1, they took their engines. They may have taken their KERS too.
Jackie, I recommend talking to your local Citizens Advice Bureau - www.adviceguide.org.uk
So why not the gearboxes??
Load up the F1 site. At the top of the page, the F1 logo comes in just like the intro before each session :D
They are already in financial trouble and had no chance of raising money from debentures before the economy turned to crap. Remember also when the deal was originally announced Gillet had a partner and he split soon after which has to have had an effect.
Also Donington are already generating a lot of bad publicity with the mess they have made of the work they are doing which has cost them their license to hold races this season.
I love people telling me I was right so I look forward to it.
Their KERS must have belonged to their engine program so they will be gone.
:D i hope your right tbh :)
Ollie has possibly the best pun ever and he has cake
http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/04/28/who-called-glock-wan-for-fashion-advice/
Haha, great pun :D
Thought so. Gearboxes would be made by the team though?
We went through all this farce before with Brands Hatch. The only difference is the people at Brands didn't spend a load of money or do something stupid to stop the circuit operating normally.
Don't know.
Should have said. don't know but I assume they were with the chassis team so are now attached to the Merc engines.
They had the local residents to do something instead.
Am I the only one who thinks that Donnington know that Bernie is resting on them. And that the BRDC won't stump up the cash?
Donington is not going to be rady on time. It is impossible. It was impossible to start with and now they are already running into financial problems.
I know. My point is that I don't think there will be a British GP.
Wow have you guys seen this? http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12511/900/
Go Christine!
haha thats amazing
It's fantastic recognition isn't it :D
!!! :D
Haha, brilliant, goo Mrs C :)
Does that mean Christine has been GMM'd?!?
It's not a GMM story luckily. :)
I wondered with the numbers at the end .. thought that was what they did
Another one they've missed?
Okay.. everyone who said Windows Live Writer was excellent is right, it is.
Brilliant :-)
I wonder how many it sold to become a hit?
Agreed, can't express enough how helpful it is :)
They should charge to download it .. fill up the sidepodtowers coffers
Now I've thrown that out there I'll go back to lurking, errr, doing my "Cash Management And Credit Control" practice papers. Lots of words. Not nice. I took accounts because I prefer numbers.
Has anyone hear of F1 complete before? It's a new one on me.
Enjoy! .. well I hope it's not too painful
Yep I read quite a lot of their stories
Murray's Bahrain Moments is up now for those of us who are in the right geographical location.
The site is back! :)
Yay
Woot!
w00t!
apologies mediatemple fubar'ed the database.
*continues shake fist directed at media temple*
Which numbers?
Curse you, Media Temple! *shakes fist*
More Merecedes murmurs - http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/bad-news-from-mercedes-ahead-of-crucial-day/
the ferrari line is more interesting:
"Ferrari is not interested in F1 controlled by a £30 million budget cap, nor by standard engines."
the numbers after /view in the url
I have never heard of it at all. Their forum looks like they don;t get much traffic and it has th feel of a brand new site een though they have comments from a year ago.
Has it given you a load of work to sort it?
is it a slow news day or something? :)
Trust me, tomorrow won't be for obvious reasons.
It's a big story. It's not every day your wife has her first hit single
nope. they rolled back/forward/whatever and it came back to life.
they're a sodding useless web host, but at least now they're responding to our tweets when something goes wrong. things can only get better :)
Something happening tomorrow like?
Ah yes, the quiz, how could I forget.
Some Mclaren thingy and a FIA budget thingymajiggy? Nah they'll get ignored I guess :P
it's a hit now? ace.
:D
That's what the news story says!
Team boss Franz Tost agrees with Alain Prost's recent criticism of Toro Rosso racer Sebastien Bourdais. This isn't sounding good...
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12509/900/ (gmm warning)
He's making even Piquet look good. And that's something I thought could never happen.
Jackie found the story http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12511/1/
I can't imagine F1 without Ferrari, love or hate them it just would not be the same without them.
James Allen's right Ferrari and the FIA seem to be so far apart right now which a few years ago the idea of such of thing would be seen as impossible.
Thats very worrying :/
or a case of Ferrari oversenstionalising the situation?
That's unfair. He's not done that badly at all...
Seems harsh to be havinga go when he finished seceral places ahead of Buemi two days ago.
the mind it does boggle.
Ferrari is going nowhere. They are just pulling the same garbage that they have done for half a century and more. Give us what we want or we will leave.
Thats wot I said!
why are we quoting gmm?
I just wondered if the guy who posted the story was selling downloads.
Thanks Steven. And the cake was yummy. :)
hahaha. it links to drop.io. they could've at least linked to the post explaining the story!
Feel free to ignore it... just thought it's a bad position to be in when your boss is telling the press that your negative attitude is getting in the way...
Was that the Gok Wan?
I hope you enjoyed my FR stats:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/fr-stats-xls
I have included some new graphs and tidied it up a bit. You can still view all the othe stuff if you 'unhide' the sheets.
Seems like Felipe Massa was the worst value for money - I thought that would have been Kubica...? Otherwise, no real surprises so far!
The main problem is that it isn't at all interesting. Okay the cash budget bit is okay because it has numbers. The explainy bit is yawny. At least this unit was an option, and I'm taking a backup option..
Yep, the Glock Wan pun.
is he really though? i just don't believe a word they copy&paste any more.
Loved the Webber photo .. but would have been funnier if it had been Felipe
He's in a bad position because he's a bit Piquet and his team mate is kicking his Flavio...
It's Tuesday so it must be punday :)
Haha, I didn't think of that. "Felipe baby, cool, we've got you a clear visor".
Has a bit Piquet made it to the wictionary yet?
Yes
Sidepodictionary?
yes that's what I meant
Yep. http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Dictionary
He beat his team mate on Sunday.
Aha, so we can blame Amy :)
Fair enough. I normally would've tried harder to find a decent source, but I guess I was being a bit lazy then...
Will try harder. ;)
I like it when they put names next to it.
*Looks down
Ah darn
Coined by Amy?
Gawd, can't remember who said that. Wasn't me though.
oooh we're back :)
Jackie, (apologies for the public-ness on this, but...) you DM'd me on Identi.ca but haven't replied. Was it anything important or just a "Hi". (I gets worried when people DM me, it makes me think it's a precursor to something, like I effed up somewhere and offended someone.) If was just a "Hi", then a howdy back at ya. :)
Normal service resumed. :)
I thought it was me?
Oh, I know it's GMM and all, but still, recognition for Christine. Big up!
Which me is that?
It was light years ago, ie, back in the time when I made that comment
Ah I said more than hi but you obviously didnt get it .. wasn't important though.. I'll try again
As in Mr. Goat, not Mr. C.
I just can't remember when it was first said...?
Don't worry, it's not. ;)
the comment about wanting to kill franck?
I got "Hi Ollie," :D The comma made me think...
You can't mention that!!!
It wasn't like that. It was meerly a phrase, a, i didn't want to kill him
bad news for ferrari. kimi say their cars run well in the heat:
"The trend seems to be confirmed that our cars run better with higher temperatures."
oops!
Ah, how the archives make me laugh: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/11/02/couldnt-have-asked-for-more/#comment-143815 :D
How do you search the archives?
sorry Gavin, must have missed your post. Feeling a bit like Mr C has been over the last few days, so not firing on all cylinders
Since that was the highest temperature we will see this season it looks like it is downhill all the way for Maranello.
And that was in my own guest post?
*Bangs head against table/laptop
No probs, hope you feel better soon!
http://www.google.co.uk/ :D
You can search with Google? Since when have Google done search engines?
I'm just reading through those comments.
You lot are a bunch of 'orrible people ;) I mean lou
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/11/02/couldnt-have-asked-for-more/#comment-143830
let me suffer? WHAT?! ;)
Bah. It only appears in the dictionary!
Oh crikey  Would it be wrong to declare my love for Steven right now? (Don't worry Mr Roy, I'm still joking.)
I think we managed to cover up the sidepodmurder quite well... apart from the hundreds of times I said it... and that fact I've just linked back to that conversation...
*runs away*
After what you said? I'm not surprised.
It was coined by Amy, but somehow I must have seen it and subliminally typed it too?
what are you searching for?
Evenin' all... What's going on 'ere den?
A sidepodmurder you say... ah...
A little bit Piquet. I found Amy's post on the 21st... mine was on the 27th!
Shh, Christine's on...
Nope, no sidepodmurder here, just the same sidepodmurder from November that never happened...
Ah. Well that's good really, we were hoping it would catch on :)
There's been a terrible wrongdoing in Sidepodland, me sir. What say your investigations?
Minus 2 million points?
I demand a lawyer...
Why did she give herself that?
Minus 2 kajillion points. Andy loses 1 kajillion points for getting the terminology wrong!
Right you lot... Stand up when you're being spoken to and sit down while you're listening...
There's been a murder... A sidepodmurder no less.. And none of us is leaving here until we find out who the RG is... Sorry culprit is ;)
eeeek i'd forgotten all about that... i blame steven...
And I still don't know who called a dog 'heel'!?
Not F1-related but I just finished writing it this moment:
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2009/04/greatest-racing-eras-group-touring-cars.html
Eeep.
I ain't speaking without a lawyer.
Though I do suspect a Mr. Roy is hiding a secret laptop with my personal information and posting as me at times. I was clearly on holiday as of the date November 5th onwards
Non-F1 related. Have you been reading the last few comments?
Hehehe. I started writing it before you lot have been talking about whatever it is you are now. :P
Mr White, if that's your real name... You think this is funny do you? A miscarriage of sidepodjustice was done here last Novembertide. And I, for one am going to get to the bottom of it. Even if it takes five minutes!
I hope that laptop doesn't contain the secret messages between Alonso and Pedalo about the "Red cars"
It was RG wot done it.
Oh Scotty baby, you really need to get rFactor:
http://rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Touring Car Legends
I know! I've seen that mod and it looks so freakin' awesome! :(
Ahh shucks.
Does she not know about the sidepodmurder?
Wha?
I had a dog called "Sit"
I fank you Ms Blachford... Very 'elpful evidence that.
Much obliged. An all.
i dunno, i paniced :P
It is. What else can I say, it's one of the best rFactor mods!
I think she does - minus one million points wasn't it?
It wont me guv, 'onest. I woz in the Blogger's Dog wolfing down a swifty 'alf wiv the stable-'and.
Can you tell me something - what's it like to drive one of the VL Holden Commodores?
Dunno, I've never driven one. But in the game it's quite cool - very grunty, loud and tail happy. The M3 is a screamer and the RS500 a bullet!
Well you say that now and you make a good point all told. Lets frame RG and pack it in for the night. I hear there's a dart board in the snug.
You simply have to try one of the GT-Rs. They weren't called "Godzillas" for nothing!
I blame Steven.
Wish my wheel still worked..
See, someone who obviously sees sense here.
(You have seen that evidence haven't you, cos you could be on the losing side)
I refuse to as a matter of principle. It's the car that ruined Bathurst!
:D
Maybe so, but I still love it!
Besides, you'll be at a loss when we finally race each other and I come flying past you off the start... ;)
I'll beat you in the M3!
Pfft, it will be no match for my 4WD powah!
That car isn't in the game - it's the GTS-R, RWD, 400 BHP...
But but...it was in the preview pictures... :(
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/tcl-car-presentation-pdf
It ain't there bro... but there's many fun cars to try!
Good night all!
Just a little plug
http://thef1waffler.blogspot.com/2009/04/you-spin-my-car-right-round.html
Guess from the title who its about ;)
I saw it in a picture! I shall prove it!
Where'd everyone go? :P
They are all hiding. There is a sidepodmurderer on the loose
Pfft, he doesn't scare me.
Right, I'm off, gotta be up in the morning. Night all :)
Clearly he does.
Evening peeps
LO
I guessed wrong..
Has everyone gone to bed?
hi, still here. playing catch up with news.
*waves from the shadows* :)
I'm still here, just about. I can confirm that the Newhickey works exactly as intended. tried to reply, couldn't. Thought "ah-ha!" changed thread. Bingo
I can also confirm that a certain documentary will soon be available :)
Mr C, did you receive my email with speedtape pic?
Tell me more :)
The one that's not on iPlayer
The Graham Hill?
i did. took a while to figure out what it was / who it was from, because the title was truncated to about 5 characters. got there in the end though, cheers!
the jackie stewart one was never on the iplayer was it?...
That is on iPlayer. This one isn't
Yeah, sorry. It was via MMS
give us a clue?
:o
would be eternally grateful if one of the others appeared in some mystery place!
It'll probably appear in a faimiliar place soon, put there by the fairies no doubt ;)
I was listening to sidepodpanel : the giggles earlier .. it's so funny
uh-oh, not the archives!
Lukeh, do yourself and Lou know about the Brawn merchandise competition on the Telegraph F1 podcast?
Signed caps I believe
archives on my phone
Ohhh my goood!
Is that bad?
I take it that's a No?
I would safely say I have no idea, not sure if lou does though... don;t think so...
erm..... no! what do i need to do? :D
You share a first name.
JYS
Yup.
Sorry Lou, didn't realise you were around during all that revising
Just a sec
cool I missed all 3
Just email:
[email protected]
7:56 mins into the latest Telegraph F1 podcast - dated 24.04.09
lol yep i'm around tonight, am not doing much revision, not sure my hands would be able to cope with it :P plus i've had an evening of looking at uni stuff (fun) plus chatting to some lovely friends :) which was nice.
But they run Silverstone, so it’s one and the same in my book. {Comment #259}
My point is that if the BRDC put a commercial person from the world of business in charge of this specific contract negotiation and gave that person carte blanche to negotiate with Bernie without regard to wider consequences, a deal would be easy-peasy. If it leased Silverstone to a commercial entity (even if it was done in such a way that the BRDC owned and ran the track for the other 51 weeks of the year), the same would apply.
However, the BRDC is a democratic institution which actually cares about balancing its books. This is what Bernie hates.
Good morning.
Apparently, someone's back in the top 5:
Most Talkative
* Journeyer (3132)
* Lukeh (2679)
* Steven Roy (2572)
* lou ( bra... (2517)
* Scott Woodwiss (2485)
Well done scott! Wow im up to 2nd...
where do the hours go, is it change of shift time again?
anyone willing to hazzard a guess to what penalty McLaren will get tomorrow? {Comment #331}
Since I suspect the WMSC may have other news it wants to hide under the case, I think it will go for something headline-grabbing. Large fine (to be paid this year), removal of constructor's points for 2009 but no impediment to driver's points or team participation.
What do you think are our chances of this being the last lame distracting political F1 event of the season? I think 0% {Comment #342}
Frankly, I'm not sure this will be the last lame distracting political F1 event of today, let alone the season :(
Apparently, there will be some discussion on the budget caps too, according to the FIF1 podcast
i believe every car will be fitted with kers by silverstone (in june). does anyone think there will still be cars on track at that time sans-kers? {Comment #409}
Yes.
Brawn have neither the funding to develop the system nor a technical partner to do so. Besides, their car is designed specifically to not use KERS.
Toyota have the funding but do not appear to have the inclination to develop KERS. Maybe they'll buy Williams' system in 2010 if it works and such purchasing proves necessary.
Toro Rosso are depending on Ferrari to get a KERS system. Ferrari is unlikely to let Toro Rosso have a system until Ferrari has had some successes with it. Therefore I can see Toro Rosso not getting KERS until the final third of the season, if they get it for 2009 at all.
Adrian Sutil is too heavy to use KERS and Force India can't afford to build a whole new lightened chassis for him the way BMW did for Robert Kubica without hampering its progress. Under their current circumstances, they can't afford to do that.
As a result, I think 13 drivers will have KERS for Silverstone (most of whom will get it in Spain or Turkey), possibly rising to 15 by the end of the year.
They won't need to - it's going to be standardized, anyway. Unless they still have to produce their own KERS?
I thought it was designed to have KERS, until they had to use a Merc engine?
Force India were supposed to start using McLaren’s KERS by Spain - one wonders why they haven’t officially confirmed it yet. {Comment #412}
They're doing it race-by-race and driver-by-driver for the same reasons as BMW - it's not an advantage at every track and, like BMW, they have one driver a lot lighter than the other.
Force India have stuck to Spain as the time when KERS will be introduced and I have no reason to disbelieve them simply because they haven't repeated it since China. That said, Sutil's weight means he almost certainly won't have it.
honda was the first team to run kers on a formula 1 car. they have more development experience than anyone else. did that information just fall out of their heads? {Comment #426}
No, but Brawn did a partial redesign of their car after getting the Mercedes engine. They also lost access to the Honda KERS unit itself at that point. Due to the new restrictions imposed by the unfamiliar engine, a "back-to-basics" approach was taken. KERS could not be described as "back-to-basics". The Brawn car hasn't got KERS because of a design-level choice, not because its lack was forced.
They won’t need to - it’s going to be standardized, anyway. Unless they still have to produce their own KERS? {Comment #872}
Since this is the FIA we're talking about and (for now) Max Mosley still runs it, I wouldn't guarantee any change for 2010 will or will not happen. It would not be the first time we've been told one thing only to witness a U-turn.
A sensible team will have a plan in case the expected standardisation occurs and another plan in case it doesn't.
JA's latest blog entry is up.
On McLaren:
On Ferrari:
Forgot the link: click here.
The teams who developed KERS have shot themselves in the foot in my opinion. Spent all that money only on research and developement only for standardised KERS the year after. {Comment #428}
They have, but they had no idea it would happen at the time. When they were spending the bulk of the money, Max was saying there'd be no restrictions, and later that the only restriction would be power output.
Yes, I KNOW it's Pitpass, but these are on-the-record interviews with Bernie and Damon.
If you didn't hate Bernie before, I'm sure you'll hate him now.
Donington, Silverstone... Korea?
If it's Pitpass I refuse to follow the link
seconded.
Even if it's properly sourced and quoted on-the-record?
i dislike pitpass for a completely different reasons.
max and bernie cannot force a team to sell a piece of technology to a competitor. {Comment #536}
They effectively can, though despite several attempts they haven't succeeding in getting that right prescribed into the regulations yet. At the moment, their forcing comes in a combination of sticks and carrots to effect obligation through behind-closed-doors "negotiation". Usually they lean on whoever they think owes them the most favours, hence why it was McLaren this time, Ferrari in 2007 and Toyota in 2005 when similar situations occurred.
Fair enough. Will just post bits from the article here then. Hang on.
for reference: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/03/05/an-open-letter-to-pitpass/
If you didn’t hate Bernie before, I’m sure you’ll hate him now. {Comment #879}
This is normal for Bernie. He doesn't know a long-term deal when he sees one, only the quick profit. He relies on making short-term deals with such intensity and pace that when some of them fail on him, he doesn't feel the effect.
I have not been back to that site since their attck on JYS and the Scots in general. I have no intention of ever visiting it again even if they start publishing next weeks winning lottery numbers.
their deal with FI was for an engine and a driveshaft - and that’s it. {Comment #550}
It was considerably more than that. The FI deal is and has always been for engine, driveshaft, KERS and hydraulics (source: Autosport, November 13 2008). FI also received access to McLaren's supplier list and received Simon Roberts on secondment to manage the factory.
The Brawn deal, on the other hand, is for engine only. Hence why they will only receive an engine from McLaren (at least this year).
This afternoon’s been fun though, we went to a uni fair thing and i managed to get a lot of uni prospectuses. just flicking back through the comments quickly… {Comment #589}
Sounds cool, lou! I went to one of those the year before I went to university and it was interesting. I only got two prospectuses though, one of which was for the local college. That's the trouble when a specialised course is wanted though - finding somewhere that does it can be tricky!
Hope you get a good result on the psychology :)
I am sure he can also work out that there are a couple of empty slots in the calendar so he can go to Korea and India in the unlikely event that either has a circuit and still have a race at Silverstone.
I didn't include it in what I quoted, lest it get too long, but Bernie said he only wanted 18 races because that was all the teams could 'just about live with'.
Ooooh... psych. What kind of work do you want post-uni, lou? The great thing with psych is that you can go a lot of different ways with it.
Look at Piquet - even with his rubbishness he was able to hold off Barrichello who was in a much faster car for two laps! That fight completely justifies KERS because had Barrichello been able to use it he would have killed him!
We have had years of slow cars holding off fast cars. Murray Walker spent decades saying catching is one thing and passing is another. {Comment #613}
Very true, and it still applies now. Fisichella proved last race by holding off Massa for three laps despite Giancarlo having no KERS and Felipe having the device in (probably) functional state.
KERS is killing some overtaking opportunities, but it is something against which defence is possible.
he's seems to forget that both german races are about to go bankrupt and spa is basically screwed.
france is missing and valencia is subject to a political corruption scandal.
if we're talking pure numbers, silverstone is safe as houses.
He has had 19 races before and wanted 20 before races started dropping out. We all watched coverage of the race in China where the commentators pointed out that although the drivers appeared to be talkig to the team everything they said was aimed at Charlie Whiting to influence his decision. This is the same. If circuits believe there are multiple slots available they will drop their bid. Everything Bernie ever says is spun to extract the maximum return.
There will be a 2010 GP at Silverstone. It is a certainty.
Oh, and my dad has confirmed with his Korean friend that construction is underway on a brand-new circuit around 2 hours out of Seoul, which should be done by next year. The circuit will be accessible by car and train (which is no surprise, given how they've taken their cues on building trains from Japan).

Especially since India has already said it won't have one until 2011 at the earliest.
you cannot use that fact that someone has started building a track as a guarantee of anything.
one word - donington.
German races are bankrupt, that is true. Why would Spa be screwed?
France may be missing, but Abu Dhabi took its slot, so a net change of zero. Valencia's scandal is a lot of hoo-hah about nothing - it should be more worried about producing better racing. But it'll stick around as long as Alonso is around.

The teams lived with 19 in 2005. What he means is that CVC's profit margin cannot live with the additional amount the teams get for the 19th race.
spa have (or will have) lost its primary sponsor - ING.
Ah, but this is different - SoKor's circuit is funded by... the Korean government. And with their friends at Samsung and Hyundai, I'm pretty sure they're not running out of cash anytime soon. South Korea's model is similar to Singapore's (but less restricted), and just as successful.
Spa is in a permanent state of financial disaster. It has been since the short version of the track returned to the calendar in the 80s. Disputes between regional and national governements and promoters etc
Good point raised there. Still, that would still mean Bernie would only want 18 races, whatever reason he gave out. He still does dictate the calendar.
good point.
Spa is in trouble for the same reason as France - it struggles to break even and the local governments are none too impressed with the burden they have to carry to keep the event alive.
That plus losing ING... somehow, I think they'll survive. They've survived for nearly 25 years now, they'll continue to do so even beyond it. Most of them have realized that the circuit plays a big role in the province's revenues. Why else would they fund building a brand-new pit complex?
It's been dropped before (for 2003) - but the local government begged Bernie to put it back on the calendar. I don't think much has changed since then.

Ah, but it is easier to persuade one person than ten teams plus one person. OK, the only persuasion techniques Bernie accepts are money-related, but his negativity is a relatively simple problem. After all, if he can arbitrarily reduce the number of races, he can arbitrarily increase them as well.

It got dropped for 2006 as well when the track couldn't afford to do the necessary upgrades to please the FIA. It may survive, but it could lose its slot and resurface a year or three later.
I thought the reason it got dropped was because they were constructing the pit complex at the time, so they couldn't hold the race?
So why not the gearboxes?? {Comment #653}
Pass.
Not sure about 2006 but it has dropped out on a few occasions because of finance which resulted in Bernie taking over as the race promoter.

The pit complex was supposed to have been ready in time for the 2006 race, but it was clear by January of that year that finances would prevent it from being done that quickly. Certain parts of the upgrade (such as the pit lane upgrade) had been required by the FIA as a condition of keeping Grade 1 status, so the delay in the pit complex stopped the Grand Prix in its tracks.
I think the Bus Stop was getting its millionth readjustment on that basis as well, though whether it could have been done in time without the pit complex funding issue is another question entirely.
Goodness knows why they keep fiddling with it - it doesn't even look like a Bus Stop anymore. :D

Unfortunately not :(
