It's been a rough weekend in Sidepodcast Towers what with The Case of the Disappearing Doohickey, and Mr C's Illness: The Return. However, we're into a new week so things must be looking up already. Here's what we're talking about at the moment:
- Luca di Montezemolo has made a point of saying that Michael Schumacher remains as a consultant for Ferrari, but that's all he is. He has no responsible role. This is a direct response to all the criticism recently regarding tyre choices attributed to the multi-world champion. I'm still curious what a consultant does, though.
- The big talk of the weekend is Formula 1's journey into space, as Niki Lauda wants to train up to be a space pilot on Virgin Galactic's flights. Barrichello has also paid for a ticket to space - presumably not with Lauda at the wheel? Virign certainly are making their impact on the sport already, aren't they?
- The Sunday Times rich list has seen Bernie Ecclestone fall down to 24th, but he still has an estimated worth of £1,466 million. Things aren't that tough just yet then. There are tons of F1 related people in the list, including Ron Dennis, Flav, DC, Button and Hamilton. There'a good summary here.
That's it for now. Please keep on chatting, about these or other topics that might be on your mind. I will see you in the comments.
One thing about LCLT - I have to repost links that haven't been discussed yet. ;)
A great find courtesy of Keith and F1F.

I'm thinking if that has an alternative meaning - he's only a consultant, so he serves at Ferrari's pleasure. LDM can sack him if and when he wants to. Then again, would he really want Schumi's technical expertise to float off to Brackley, for that's surely where Schumi would offer his services if Ferrari let him go.
Considering how much he had to pay out to Slavica, I'm surprised this hasn't been in the news more. It got me thinking though - did they really divorce and move apart? Or are Bernie and Slavica doing it for a more... financial-minded... reason?
Such as?
To protect their wealth, especially if, say, Bernie got sued for one reason or another. They could take away Bernie's wealth, but not Slavica's.
Anything is possible, I suppose. Especially where Bernie is concerned.
It's not likely, but it's possible. I mean, why would Slavica divorce Bernie at such an age? I guess she could remarry to someone just as rich as Bernie, but younger. Even so, a very odd thing to do at her age.
I would like to say that after going out in my hat yesterday afternoon. I was able to find somewhere serving a bowl of nachos. So I did eat nachos while wearing my hat. That was the closest I could get to it.
Sadly live commenting isn't really possible at the mo :( For understandable reasons hence the update now :)
That's pretty close!
Not necessarily. Relationships change at all ages.
A matter of culture, I guess. Over here, people rarely divorce at old age - even if things aren't working out so well, they just let things lay. The thinking here is - who else will be with you as you grow old?
Hehehe. The one made me giggle. You do live up to your name! :P
Gooooood morning.
I'm annoyed at BAT right now. I specifically set my tyres for qually as softs and what does it send me out on? Inters! Grrr!
That's not very good, is it?
Oh well. I guess it's a back-of-the-grid start then?
I got into Q3 for the first time which was my goal. We shall ignore that I then qualified 10th. :D
16th :/
You might want to thank Scott for inadvertently helping your cause. ;) Great job!
It could be worse - points should still be possible.
Oh wait - this is Hungary, right? It'll be a stretch.
Let's just say I'm running a similar strategy to Monaco, so hopefully it'll pay off.
True, he has won enough. He is the Jenson of BAT :P
Fingers crossed!
Jenson hasn't won nearly enough! He hasn't even won the title yet! :P Scott would be more of a Michael Schumacher, only more ethical and less invincible. :D
Surely I'm a Vettel because I'm in a Red Bull. :D
G'Day everyone!
Hi Sean. How are you?
Tired. Just got back from uni. You?
Tired. Just started work :)
Heh. Today was the first day back after the holidays, so for once I wasn't actually tired at the start of day.
How long will that last for?
And I wasn't tired at work today, no panel was quite a good thing to be honest. Sleep was amazing.
Possibly until tomorrow morning, but I'll definately be tired on Wednesday.
I'd assume Mr.C will be asleep pretty much all day. Best thing for it, if you ask me. That and a lot of orange juice. Vitamin C will do him the world of good.
I agree with Journeyer - a consultant is someone you can publicly disagree with and ignore when it suits you politically or for public relations "situations".
Agreed. Lots of water will also be VERY helpful. Any liquids, for that matter.
The team haven't actually mentioned yet what Schumacher has contributed to the team, as well as if it's anything of significance. One must wonder what kind of voice Schumacher really has on the pitwall. Therefore, it's hard to assess if he's a benefit or a hindrance to the team.
Good to hear! Do you also have a bank holiday next Monday?
I'd also recommend Echinacea. Gives your immune system a real boost. Sure, the tablet itself doesn't taste nice but then medicine never does.
Don't like the taste? Hold your breath while taking it, then down it with tons of water or OJ. :D
That's the way to do it! :D
Nope, no public holidays until June 15th and then none until Christmas :(
You don't get the October long weekend in Melbourne?
What is in October? It's possible, I'm just going off the International Holidays page in my diary
I can't remember what its for, but there is always a long weekend at the start of October in Sydney.
Is the doohickey working again?
I guess there is Melbourne Cup day at some stage, but thats a Tuesday :(
Hi, Gavin. Nope, doesn't look like it.
Please ignore that comment. However, I must say that lclt is a pain in the Flavio to use on an iPod :(
Yea, it doesn't work on my phone either.
Did you all enjoy the race yesterday? Sorry I missed it - I went and saw a massive Oil Rig which was really interesting - Discovery Channel stuff!
I quite enjoyed the race - good overtaking, masterful use of strategy by Brawn. It felt like Toyota lost the race which I was a little sad about, and I must admit they did overplay the 'Ferrari in crisis' stuff. BBC had a good race and Legard did OK too :)
How does one Live comment on the go now?
At the moment, via Ye Olde Comments box.
I thought it was great, myself and Dad thought it was the best race of the season. Great to see Jenson celebrate a win that wasn't compromised by a safety car or rain. He looked really happy :D
I loved the 'three wide' stuff in the first few laps - and the bit with piquet and Barrichello was very entertaining!
I don't think it'll be back anytime soon, if at all. Definitely not while Mr C is recuperating. And even then, he's probably going to either redesign the doohickey, or create a new tool altogether.
Coping with LCLT is the only way at this point.
The first few laps were amazing, and I really enjoyed watching Trulli's strategy unfold - holding everyone else up and then coming back at them on the right tyres.
I could quite easily have fallen asleep during the second half though.
And great to see Brawn outsmart the others in a deficient car today - excellent stuff. Ferrari, you silly billys for letting him go! :)
Heehee, it certainly was, Rubens rightly gesticulating at Piquet for being a bit Piquet. :D
Don't be too Piquet, or else you'll become a pain in the Flavio. :D
Even in an era where more emphasis is placed on racing, strategy still plays a huge role - for this year, at least.
I was thinking that when I saw him. Shame Glock couldn't stay ahead - I think Toyota made a mistake swapping over GLock & Trulli in the first pitstop because they could have let GLock drive off and allow Trulli to form a train behind him. That may have allowed GLock to win...?
I agree with Christine, towards the end I started hoping for some retirements or at least a couple of spins or off road excursions to make it a little more interesting
I wonder what LDM was thinking as he was peering though the gap in the pitwall towards the end of the race... all while Ross was happily munching away on a banana at the other end of the pitlane.
So could I - I started watching the race at 11pm and it didn't finish until 1:30am :(
Thinking "Ahh, this team boss life ain't so bad after all!" Once the banana comes out, you know it's all done and dusted ;)
Not sure if swapping them at the first stops was intentional. Glock did pit first, after all. It's just that he many not have been able to build a sufficient enough gap to stay ahead of the peloton, whereas Trulli managed to since he had more time.
It may well have been, because Trulli pitted earlier?
Journeyer, have you overtaken me yet?
He's #1 now! :D
The Banana is like the victory cigar, eh?
Like, more than Steven Roy????
More than anyone!
And it's time for the other teams to go home. :D
The new top 5:

Incidentally, I have stats from all the races so far - so once I catch up with a bit of racing TV, I intend to start the blog. I'm gonna need help with where to host it, how to allow commenting, what to call it etc. so any suggestions will be appreciated ;)
You go away for one day and look what happens!
:D
Journeyer's literally stunned us all with his commenting.
He has commenting KERS doesn't he? :D
He's very quick to counter-comment :D
All I can say for the next race, as a Heikki fan, is I hope it's nothing like Spain 2008.
By the way, I mentioned last night that I've entered PSRTV's announcers contest to celebrate 2 years of broadcasting sim racing. Top 10 compete live on air and the winner gets $250 :D
It didn't prove to be like Germany 2008 for Glock or Canada 2007 for Kubica, did it?
I thought he was a gonner in that race! :(
Yeah, you get some silly guy hosting a race in the middle of a camel farm. Who on earth would go to a camel farm?!
Nah, I just have quick fingers. ;)
Yup, that's true. It also helped that I live commented here for China and Bahrain.
Hear, hear! Well, Kubica had a huge shunt in Canada 2007, and duly won Canada 2008. McLaren said they can start winning by Spain. Do the math... :D
It scared me a lot more than those two because those two you could see them moving whereas in Heikkis crash he was buried past his head. I felt sick to my stomach until they showed him giving the thumbs up on the stretcher.
My dad thought Kub was dead after that incident.
Comment in moderation. Nacht. :P
Hear, hear! Well, Kubica had a huge shunt in Canada 2007, and duly won Canada 2008. McLaren said they can start winning by Spain. Do the math… :D
Exactly the same here!
A few years ago he would have been. Thank God for the GPDA!
Maybe I should start playing around with my FR teams... :D
I still haven't checked my scores!
Sid Watkins thought he'd be at least unconscious, but he was perfectly fine. Mind you, if it weren't for that incident, we might not have discovered the prodigy that is Sebastian Vettel.
Which, for most of its modern life, had been led by Michael Schumacher... ;)
How'd you do?
True! :D
Wow, just noticed we made nearly 2,500 comments in yesterday's race thread.
not sure i understand?
i'm home today, still recovering so i can at least think about doohickey.
That's a fair few.
Good to hear from you Mr.C :)
Feeling any better?
apparently i might live.
You'll be fine I'm sure :)
I think the first comment on this thread is a repeat of the last one on yesterdays daily. I guess in the doohickey you would have seen yesterdays if it was in the last 20.
i see. i kinda think that's a good thing though?
Which bit?
well. if you were to re-read this thread in 6 months time, the conversation will still make sense. because journeyer has repeated his link and then the conversartion continues.
the problem with doohickey is, people read the last 20 comments and just pick up the conversation. even though sometimes that's jumped threads.
re-read a doohickey based conversation in 6 months time and it'll likely be impossible to follow.
Very true.
Slipped down to 37th. Glock, Kubica and Sutil let me down again.
The thing is, do we come here to talk or do we come here to follow a thread? Are we a chatroom, a newsgroup, a forum or something else?
BTW will do FR stats later guys ;)
Morning everyone (just about)
Got my first pole on BATracer with the Brawn car, yay :)
I don't know what its intended to be, but I think it's a mix of all of that, and that's why I like it so much.
I disagree with that personally. I often catch up first thing in the morning and it seems to make sense to me.
good question.
the site is inherantly thread based. and every day christine writes a new thread.
i guess doohickey is too much like an un-threaded chat room.
neither do we :)
Aren't they just labels?
I see it as a blog, and when off-topic became a problem, I started a daily thread. The conversation should definitely be able to be looked back on because... let's face it, it's impossible to keep people out of the archives.
also. if people can't look back and make sense of a daily thread, there really is no point in keeping it.
selling button would be a bad idea, right?
Wouldn't dream of it!
today's does. i agree. i'm not convinced about some other threads though.
I think the problem stemmed from the fact there were something like 4 or 5 threads open on saturday - a daily, aside, qualy, and I think one other so it would have been difficult to follow any thread TBH.
Perhaps comments should only be allowed in the daily thread?
Unless you're Luca Di Montezemolo ;)
or Briatore, or Frank Williams ;)
I don't want to go down the path of closing off comments though. Why shouldn't people be allowed to air their thoughts on the Joe show? It would be even harder to find stuff if the relevant info was bundled into the Daily thread.
100% agree. closing comments will never happen.
That's a good point. Perhaps we should be reading blog posts in static format - but then that defeats the point of live commenting. I like to see the posts as they come in, but I have no idea who might be commenting on the race in another thread?
Barrichello's website was attacked by a bunch of geeky hackers following yesterday's race. Rubbish Google translation coming up: click here!
They make reference to him being a 'slow turtle' and it is thought they're unhappy that Senna didn't get the Brawn drive this season.
But when specifically asked to post race comments in a particular thread, say for a debrief show, we should probably refrain from talking about the weather, for 300 lines or so
Was mentioned yesterday I think, but what a bummer for him :(
Still really upset at that, I shalln'#t describe the words that express what I think of the sad, sad people who did such a thing.
one other problem i can't get my head around. is what to do when the daily thread moves forward to the next day.
an issue we had a few weeks ago (that actually started the doohickey conversation), was that the same conversation was being spread across x2 daily threads.
Having not listened to the show last night yet (and how was the panel BTW?) I don't know what was asked or said - but it requires a lot of discipline to follow. I think we can do it here but normally it wouldn't be possible...
we just need a better soluiton for race comments generally :)
That one does annoy me too actually...
I'd say if you're mid-conversation, carry on. If you wanna start something new, then move days.
Yeah but at what point do you call it and move on?
There was a strange thing happening more recently with the doohicky which is that people were saying, "quick lets go back to the daily thread so people don't get cross" which was leaving half of the conversation on each thread.
There wasn't one, Mr C had Swine Flu I think but has pulled through with large doses of an unnamed energy drink and episodes of Roary The Racer
not that simple.
anyone catching up on comments can drop a thought into an old daily thread and a couple of replies later, you've jumped back a day without noticing.
No show or panel?
That's why I said:
in that instance, we can move some comments. but yup, that's another biggy.
:(
Sad but true, but he's alive to tell the tail, so that's all we need :)
I do wonder if... And this is quite radical... and I have no idea how you would do this in the back end Mr C...
Non daily posts have comments which are to do with the thing...
And the Daily posts have a single continuum of comments.
So when you go to a daily post the doohicky is there at the bottom of the page automatically instead of the comments box.
Or something.
Wow. I felt stink last night for missing both. I feel happy in a Schadenfreude kinda way now. Are you ok Mr. C?
Well that's fine. If the conversation happens there, why not? We get comments on old threads all the time, and it's never really been a problem before.
The way I see it the two problems are:
1) Commenting in the wrong place.
2) Cross commenting.
I don't see why time has anything to do with it.
i'm not dead. that is all i ask :)
Unless he's been to Mexico recently, I highly doubt it's swine flu.
We've yet to get the all clear from the http doctor about Doohickey's prognosis ;)
interesting. difficullt, but interesting.
Moved after posting in wrong thread:
Doohickey may not be perfect, but it makes a huge difference to how easy conversation is to follow. Personally, I'm inclined to keep it regardless of its flaws, but if you absolutely insist on changing it, it should be rewitten so that it follows one specific thread at a time... i.e. a doohickey link in the daily thread, a separate doohickey in the race's thread etc.
Ok, maybe I overstated it
A little. It was probably Avian Flu
[Or Sambuccus Shottus Flu - an even rarer strain]
Is that like, "Consult the hand because the face ain't listening any more?"
In theory you could have a single thread that has all the daily comments in the background?
:)
In my head, the doohickey would look the same but allow comments only on daily threads. Comments on other threads would lead you to reply in a new tab or something.
Then the live commenting improvements that I know are coming would replace the doohickey for races and podcasting.
At 2am, a Vista like virtual slap appears and says: "are you sure you want to post in a previous daily thread" - activated only when the new daily thread arrives
Replace the Doohickey? Say it ain't so!!!
that works except for the aformention daily vs. daily cross threading problem.
Well the LCLT is my preferred solution for races anyway...
it's sadly too hard to do that at the moment. doohickey just doesn't know when a new thread has opened.
But then the single continuum of daily comments would solve that problem.
Pah! :)
Not replace. Be the solution of choice for races, rather than the doohickey.
Can we not chip in and hire the bouncer that works at Vista?
You don't comment the races anyway do you?
It's much easier if the box doesn't move.
I've seen him in the ads, he's very stern
Compared to the mess we saw this weekend? I think that is the smallest possible problem we could have.
Just Qualy and practice at the moment, but I see your point
there is that argument, but it's just soo flawed.
that's another way. hmmm.
By posting a daily thread
Same, I used doohickey for normal days and lclt for debriefs and qualy/races.
I've always been ambidextrous when it comes to IT - I never prefer one system to another and I have found that I can adapt quite easily. So here I am using doohickey :)
Mr. C. and Christine, it would be interesting to know how many threads are being commented in today as opposed to last week? Does lclt 'force' us into sticking with one thread or are people still posting in others?
i disagree. it was a daily vs. daily problem that originally highlighted the issue for me.
we were on something like the 18th of the month and half the daily convo was happening in that thread, whilst a seperate half was kicking off in one from the 16th. it was just a massive mess.
What actually happened? I dug through 2 dailys, a preview thread, an aside thread and couldnt figure out what went wrong... Or is that just it?
Two seperate conversations though? Because I don't see that as a problem.
Hullooooo
too many threads were open and people kept posting in the wrong one I think.
no. one conversation.
It's probably already been suggested and I'm way behind with the doohickey discussion but how about a popup that allows you to choose where you're posting to when you click comment?
I loved the doohickey but I've adapted already. I'm easily pleased. Although at the moment I can read from the LCLT but not post from it. I don't have much to say though so it's OK :D
I do not remember that. It seems like that wouldn't happen a lot though.
that's good except doohickey doesn't know when a new thread is open. so eventually you'll have to refresh doohickey.
Has that happened often?
you were asleep. it mostly happens at night when a new thread appears.
I preferred the Doohickey if I'm honest but I can easily live with the LCLT. I don't want to sound like a moaning old ninny but the old flaw I have with it is that it's really thin, I like my commentajiggies to be wiiiiide :P
Although I think you mentioned before that you were looking at that... so this is a bit void for me to be bringing it up I suppose. But I'e said it before, as long as you guys are happy with whatever otucome comes with the doohickey, then it's best you take your time to find a working solution.
more and more often, sadly. this weekend was maybe the third or forth time. but it's getting more rather than less frequent.
Ok, I'm off to work
Mr C, I got a large chunk of my Flickr stuff done last night before I hit the free limit, will upgrade soon but it's here if you're interested [or anyone else for that matter]
http://www.flickr.com/photos/78128456@N00/sets/
lclt is old and a bit rubbish, but i can't can be fixed with a bit of tlc.
doohickey on the other hand, is just a pain in the bum.
Okay, so, new doohickey in my head :)
You select which thread you want, just like the LCLT, but you still see the other comments coming in, and any that are for a thread you didn't pick become 'clickaway to a new tab' ones.
i shall look, thanks you sir.
that was a rubbish sentence...
"it can be fixed"
that.might.work.
I was thinking of something similar to that - just an LCLT but without a commenting option. But that's just my opinion.
That's a great idea
Theres also a bandwidth concern... Even this relatively small daily comments thread has already hit 140k, every time every user refreshes to see the new comments, thats another 140k burned.
If someone's browser decides it wants the JS and images again (which happens more often than I'd like) thats another 400k too. Thats soon gonna mount up.
JS?
good point. doohickey uses 2kb of bandwidth when there are no comments, and that's about it.
javascript.
Ah ok, thought it was going very 'html' - I was right ;)
Have a good day all
See ya bassano
in short, lclt isn't very good for moblies.
may have a play with christine's idea for threading in a bit...
It would be nice to have a live option for mobiles - seeing as I usually comment on the way home on the train ;)
When I had to do with internet on my mobile (along with my mum's laptop and the library), I never attempted commenting. Always did it from a computer. But yes, as Gavin's just said, a "mobile LCLT" would be rather cool.
It would be nice to have a live option for mobiles - seeing as I usually comment on the way home on the train
I use an awful lot of my data plan refreshing the daily threads on my phone browser at work ;)
Will be back soon, must go and find my blowtorch ready for my driving lesson. ;)
:D
Plus the actual comments, if the last 20 in this thread are representetive they weigh in at about 6kb
Blowtorch?
Afternoon all. A charity for Christine to see (although I've no idea wether she'd like it or not...)
http://www.homestarrunner.com/pistols4pandas.html
blech. For some reason, HSR completely passed me by...?
Taking Christine's version slightly differently...
How about you select a thread at the top in the drop down... All comments on that thread are white and have comment boxes... All comments on other threads are gray. And you have to swap to that thread by changing the drop down.
The drop down doesn't need to detect new threads as they are added... But shows you a list of all of the threads that you have seen comments from. So first comment on new thread "Go Lewis/Sutil/whoever" adds a new option to the drop down but doesn't select it.
Or something?
The conversation should definitely be able to be looked back on because… let’s face it, it’s impossible to keep people out of the archives. {Comment #106}
Especially since I've just got round to doing my entry on the F1 Bloggers and Friends Karting Competition and ended up referencing several threads from Sidepodcast in the write-up...
Yes, I am behind on my writing schedule.
The thing is, do we come here to talk or do we come here to follow a thread? Are we a chatroom, a newsgroup, a forum or something else? {Comment #99}
We're a blog. More importantly, we're also ourselves - which makes all the difference between here and other places :) and is why we have this identity problem. None of the traditional ways of blogging suit us, so we make our own and make them fit what we want to become.
I think...
Barrichello’s website was attacked by a bunch of geeky hackers following yesterday’s race. {Comment #117}
Yuck! There I was thinking not being able to get on the Fisichella Forum was bad, but insulting and false hacking of that kind is considerably worse. Shame on those who did it :(
they come down the wire gzipped though don't they?
damn good point.
Quite right. Much as I'd like to start a blog, I just wouldn't have the time to update it regularly enough – paid work keeps getting in the way (not that I'm complaining about that).
I just checked the headers, and yes they do.
Content-Encoding: gzip
is the offending article :)
Neither are we. Nice article on the wing mirrors, BTW!
Don't let Mr. C hear you say that ;)
too late: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Blog+Links
ooh I'm on there too? I was just reading some of my old livejournal entries from 2003 and cringing.
Hey everyone, what's occurring?
Still got bird flu Mr. C?
officially, it's the black death.
Mr C = the master of amateur dramatics.
Oh dear. That.... escalated quickly
Christine posted a little cartoon of a little dude going after a bay parked car with a blowtorch in frustration because of their bad parking, I said it reminded me of how abd my bay parking is on my lessons, and it all grew from that. :P
That lesson went well though, left hand reverse corner on a hill is evil though. :(
And by that you mean the master of talking rubbish, don't you? :)
And something you will never do in real life.
:D
Oh yeah, I remember now...!
That's the idea of a test though - so in real life things seem easier...
Black death tends to do that - that's why it's a plague ;)
:D
I don't think I've done that in a car since 2001 when I sat my test. Only part I failed so it's probably good I haven't done it since :D
hehe
A courier nearly failed me my test by his bad driving - I took a roundabout correctly and he came into it too quickly. My driving instructor had to convince my tester that it would have been very harsh to fail me on that - so he passed me. Bless his little grumpy socks off! ;)
My full test was way scarier than my restricted, but my tester loved my car :D I miss my mini :(
I wish ym instructor was like that, he just shouts at me for anything.
Oh it's staretd raining, you should've handled that better!
My phone is vibrating, your driing should've been more aware!
Some dust just landed on my nose, wnhy didn't you judge the situation better!!!
...ok maybe not THAT extreme but still.
My mom failed her first test because a cyclist shot out in front of her. The tester crapped himself and slammed the emergency brake on (even though my mom had hit the breaks too) and failed her for it.
Mine was a racist former policemen with a knackered old corolla - he was a lot of fun though!
Suckage. Good on yer mam though!
I know!
Do they still do tests in cars with duel controls?
If she'd had an opportunity to spot the cyclist before it pulled in front, aka if they were on the pavement with no parked cars in the way, then yes I can understand why. But if not, then that is one harsh fail and I would have literally let rip at the guy for it.
Nope, I think he shot out of an alley or something straight into the road. Nowadays she would have kicked up a fuss but I think she was pretty timid when she was younger.
I can't remember. I think my car had it's duals removed for the test.
The world doesn't work that way when you are at the mercy of someone whose opinion is law, unfortunately. I don't know how my tester was convinced to change their mind eh!
Exactly what I meant. How are you supposed to prepare for a cyclist coming out of an alley when you don't even know they're there?!
Because in an accident the car would have been at fault I think...
But some fault would have to lay with the cyclist for not stopping and checking for oncoming cars, surely.
Dunno. The rules are a bit odd when it comes down to car vs. bike or car vs. cyclist. At least in Denmark, anyway...
Oooh, I might be going to Brands Hatch on Saturday :D
I hit black ice, during my emergency stop.
Luckily I recovered the situation and passed.
Very luckily they didn't ask me to parallel park.
What for?
A1GP qualifying and various support races. My housemate needs to record some audio for a uni project and he's asked me if I want to go down with him.
Thought you all might appreciate this link. It is aimed at us Aussies, but it lists international retailers so should be useful.
http://www.booko.com.au/books/isbn/9780755315390
Aww man I'd love to see another A1GP :) Good racing that was - thanks for reminding me it is on this weekend :)
Dad is working on those tickets for British GP free practice. He goes running twice a week with his mate from Santander, so hopefully I'll be off to watch FP this year :D
I don't get why I can watch Jakes interview with Lewis on the BBC website but Legards Heikki feature is geolocked. Don't give me some and not others, BBC!
It's mocking you :P
I know it's a while off, but is anyone else going to Silverstone for the GP this year?
Maybe its trying to protect me from Legard?
As long as I pass my exams, I'll be going.
Oooh that's possible. Maybe it's for the best then :D
If you are using a mac I know a way around it.....
No Heikki is never for the best:D
I'm currently down to host for VIPs at the Renault factory that weekend...
Yep, I'm there all weekend.
No but I'm going to Le Mans :D
I don't think I will be going to any Grands Prix this year...
do tell...
I wish... I didn't even make it to Melbourne...
not using a mac, relying on others to drop.io stuff for me :D
There are other ways too...
I'm seriously considering buying a piece of F1 merchandise or two. Hmm, but what to get?
An old F1 car?
A racing seat for the rFactor rig?
Williams mousemat. Good value
I don't have that much money! :D
Don't have a mouse because I use a laptop?
I'm thinking of something like a Force India or Red Bull shirt.
Red Bull definitely!
Neither do I, or space!
I know but I can't be bothered making the effort
I wonder how well a screen sharing/VNC type thing would work. We could set up a buddy system with sympathetic UK resident. Or use a UK based hosting company.
Force India have Qualifying and Race shirts. Erm......
It's only Heikki, after all ;)
A model F1 car? A Ferrari jacket? A Brawn cap, maybe? ;)
!
Does the qualifying one make you swerve in front of people running at you from behind in Red Bull shirts?
:D
I saw this on Twitter yesterday:
Chinmoy: Just bought a T-Shirt of Force India , quality , look and finish is just as bad as the performance of the team... truly disappointed.
Brawn caps are £20! I could more than likely pic one up for a bit less at Silverstone if I go for the GP, if not at Autosport next year.
So, Red Bull...
I can't wait to hear what Sooty has to say on this week's FIF1 podcast about the swerve!
A Red Bull cap's about £27 quid converted from Euros!
F1 merchandise is not cheap. Which sucks, considering my coffee mug collection. Dearest mugs ever :(
Sounds about right - I remember Schumi's Ferrari caps being slightly pricier than that, so that's an accurate price.
Yeah I had to leave my Ferrari one behind as it's knackered and cracked - good for pen storage though!
Tell me about it. Although I've just found a t-shirt on Red Bull's shop for 20 euros, which should convert to about £18
Ferrari F1 jacket - bought it at 20% off, still cost me £104.
There is a programme for Mac called Hotspot Shield. It's made for online security, but it has the handy side effect of masking your location. Ridiculously, if region-locked content can't tell where you are, rather than keeping you locked out, it just assumes you're i the right place and lets you view it.
I used to collect Schumacher caps from his Ferrari days. Every year at Autosport, I'd buy the new one :D
And even then, they were only about £15-£20 there.
Wow - that's a lot of money for a bright gaudy jacket!
Doesn't work with the iPlayer - at least I haven't made it work *yet* ;)
There's a nice Vettel t-shirt I just found with the RB5 on it, 25 euros.
I don't get it - why more than one and why Schumi?
I dunno, was back when I supported him. First one I bought was his 1998 cap and the last was his 2004 one I think, with the 6 gold stripes.
Think the gold stripes were 2003 actually. 2004 had silver ones.
Now having a browse at what BMW have to offer...
Well that's pants.
I used that for Hulu once to see what all the fuss was about.
Maybe I should just send an old PowerBook to SPC Towers and use Back To My Mac...
Grand Prix Legends have a sale on their website, just checking what they have.
that'll help our bandwidth problems immensely!
If enough commenters commit to 5 pounds a month, we could fund a naked dsl line for you. We may want to use it at certain times on race weekends though :-)
profiteering from the illegal copyright infringement won't see us locked up either.
In what can only be called the highlight of his career so far, Jenson Button has made the "What's Hot" list on the weekly email from my local smoothie franchise, alongside other entries such as "tickets to Beyonce" and "man vests"
Well done Jenson.
the answer to everybody's geo issues is simple. follow scott in italy's example and move to europe :)
There are so many things about that sentence that need questioning :)
It's one of those things. I'd like to move to Europe in the future, but I don't want to leave Australia.
Damned rules!
make it warmer. I've been working on Zoe about this for a while now...
I'd quite like to move to Spain to see if trying to learn Spanish has worked, although all my Spanish friends live in Ireland and tell me everyone in Spain is English.
f1 is trying it's bestest.
other things that are hot: twitter, britains got talent, round toed chunky heeled shoes.
Heh, I'm learning Spanish at the moment. How long did you do it for?
I have literally just started :D
Comedians view on global warming:
.
Fat people are causing global warming. Fat people eat more Magnums because its warmer. Therefore, Magnums are responsible for global warming.
.
It's all Kimi's fault for endorsing Magnums. Formula 1 is to blame!
Same. Well, 7 weeks ago. ;)
I know Finland is cold, but thats going too far!
Damn, can't find anything good for a price that won't drain too much of my money. :(
Rewatching my local prerace show I notice they have once again got "Robert Kubika" on the grid. Fourth race in a row in fact.
Shameful.
?
Has whoever wrote that never visited the north of England?
Hey everyone. Back from work.
I bought his 2004 cap. I'm looking for the cap he's been wearing in the paddock from 2007 up to now.
Money well spent, I say! :D Bright and gaudy would be the McLaren dayglo red shirts and jackets. :P
You don't like him anymore? ;)
you know we have a wiki page for flickr profiles. do you think we need the same for microblogging profiles too?
Not that I don't like him, I just got bored of his domination of F1.
Yes!
I never got bored of it for some reason... Kinda liked it, in fact - they really deserved it. :)
I think I might invest in a good DVD instead. Gonna trawl Duke Video and see what they have.
I'm off for the night. Night everyone!
Also, Journeyer, you asked for a pic of the Ferrari sunglasses, here is one:
http://www.formula1mall.com/product_info.php?products_id=621
Look at the price in pounds, I paid 100 pounds less than that! ;)
Have we discussed these glasses yet?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/timoglock-jpeg
Lotsa really cool DVDs - Formula 1 Season Reviews are my personal favorite. :) But Duke Video only did F1 Season Reviews until 2005. From 2006 onwards, it was SRO that produced them.
I'm not cool enough to discuss a a look as cool as that. Also, Jarno's stole his laces.
I'm tempted by one of these World Sportscar Review DVDs. But choosing between 1983 and 1989 is tough.
:D
BBC have updated the Big Picture really fast this week, its a pic of Jenson!
Timo missed the memo that these lenses are in
Can you pop a link? :)
Consider it popped
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8020953.stm
I'm not such a fan of this one
I'm looking at the Le Mans 1980-1989 boxset, with 1990 thrown in for free. That looks like a bargain. Hmmm...
And the WRC boxsets look fantastic too. Dang...
Evnin all.
Just seen BATRacer, back in the big time baby.
Straight outta Flash Gordon...
Any in-car footage of Blundell's quali lap in the Nissan is to be treasured.
Just started raining hard here and got very windy.
That good, eh? Must really consider it now... :D Have to balance it with my intention of buing a Brawn cap or shirt come June, though... Decisions, decisions...
We've had light drizzle on and off, now its cloudy with the sun peaking out. Played cricket in the drizzle.
I'm having a hard time trying to decide which WSC review to go with! Right now it's a toss up between 1985 and 1988.
The Rothmans Porsche livery is unbelievable (as is Jacky Ickx), but 1988 has Sauber Mercedes and Martin Brundle.
It's a tossup, but I'd say 1985.
Not to mention Jacky Ickx is a tintop LEGEND.
For me it's more of a choice of: Do I want to see 11 races or the race they had in Malaysia?
Can't you do both?
They're £15 each and I've only got £80 which I need to save for other things.
Assume that you're going to get both as soon as you can, then decide which one you'd want to see right now.
1988 has Monza and the Nurburgring. But Selangor is really tempting... :D
Good idea!
or... you could have a poll on your site. buy the one people recommend.
maybe coupled with a blog post to tell us why each race is special?
Oooh, do that one. Ignore mine.
That's an excellent idea actually. Will do now.
Let us know when it's up! :)
Watching Bahrain replay now on Star Sports... :D
Will be in a few minutes. Just going to write a short blog post on it first. ;)
Anyone think Tonio Liuzzi will be getting a seat to replace Fisichella soon? He has been keeping his skills up with A1 and the Speed Car series been doing well too.
He'll definitely have it by 2010. The question is - will he get it even earlier than that?
I have to agree with Katzuki Nakajima too. There is bugger all to do in Bahrain
He looked awesome in the Speedcar race here in Bahrain.
:)
when did he say that?
True, but tin-tops is one thing, open-wheel seaters quite another.
Piquet and Fisi I think will definatly go before the season sets its dusk.
Right:
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2009/04/lets-c-now-which-one.html
The fate of which one I buy is now in your hands!
yesss!
Poll ends at 12 noon on Friday. ;)
You're loving this too much, aren't you?
:D
I feel evil and wont vote....
...until after I googled the seasons and about World Sportscar
i like power :)
:D
I picked 1988 - Monza and Nurburgring just edged it for me. :)
How are you today btw Mr C?
As I point out in the post, whichever one comes out top, I WILL buy - promise.
i could possibly do with a bit more info if i'm to make an educated selection.
First it was bird flu, now it's the black death. Go figure.
I want proof then. You, the video and page 22
quite good. still unwell, but the spc community have put their thinking hats on and may have come up with a doohickey solution.
:D
:D
I know at least one F1 journo who'd like to see that.
Grrrrrrrrr!
Oooh, I'll go find then.
I was gonna say, by the look of the comments you've certainly perked up a little since this morning :)
:D
agreed. :) the power of dreams?
In-Car 956 (not a snappy title, I know) is also worth seeking out. There's a marvellous moment when Del Bell is doing in-car commentary live and clearly pushing on a bit – Ickx comes blasting past and DB is clearly taken aback.
Is that when he's on the Nordschleife and Ickx comes hairing past him going downhill through Fuchsrohre?
Same here, Sauber edged it for me.
didn't fancy skiiing?
Definately have to agree with Piquet going RG.
I think you have to go to Dubai for skiing. Not here for sure.
seems like forever ago since we last had a mid season driver change even though it really wasnt.
You could say piquets time is running out...
:P
hehehe.
There are a few forts, a tree!!!, an oil museum open on fri and sat, but the shopping malls are awesome
:D
Nice little plug ;)
a tree?
its a magic tree that gets its water from mysterious sources apparently
Yes the tree of life. It's a tree in the dessert covered in graffiti.
not really a draw card then
I was so dissapointed I didnt even get out of the car.
Where can I post some photos so you can all be dissapointed too!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_Life,_Bahrain
now I've seen it and I didn't even have to go to Bahrain, hooray
I can see a tree outside, I get the jist of it
Well anyway thats supposed to be a highlight of bahrain!
doesn't strike me that it would occupy a massive amount of one's time.
Perhaps. I have misty recollection.
Unless you like golf or are in a pricey hotel there isn't much to do in Bahrain apart from shop.
Another chapter of MBW dispatched. Only four more and the intro to do now...
However the Sakir circuit was awesome. Autograph sessions really working well. Got a Heikki autograph. And shook hands with Fernando so really good weekend. Highlight was the public pitwalk on Thursday
I remember when my dad went to a test session at Silverstone as a guest of McLaren or Santander and actually met Alonso. What was the question he asked him again?...
Dad: "I think it's obvious everyone here wants to know are you actually friends with Lewis?"
Alonso: "Erm.........no."
:D
guest blog post?
Hahaha.. straight to the point!
The best conversation I've ever had in my life:Me: "Good luck this weekend"
Heikki Kovalainen: "Thanks"
We had an autograph session - but a public pitwalk?!?! Lucky you!! :P
YES!! Pleaaaase? :)
:D
Multiple lclts
I've chatted to Allan McNish at Autosport about the R10 and how the Peugeots looked for Le Mans, and Sato about his chances for 2007 in the Super Aguri. 'Twas rather good :)
Now why can't F1 drivers be like that more often? :)
It was in the driver signing part of the show to be fair, but a good experience nonetheless. At Silverstone for the WSR race, I'm going to try and find "Our Nige" since his son Greg's taking part this year :D
I've spoke to Matt Neal. And erm, Harry Vaulkhard, and the other one that drove for Robertshaw Racing last year
How do I do the guest blog post?
I do remember I said congratulations to Matt about his championship win and he said thanks and that it meant a lot :D
E-mail it to them?
Yup: christine at sidepodcast dot com.
OK will do. I met someone who is travelling to every Grand Prix this year can I post a link to her blog here?
I'll be sure to try a guest post for British GP Friday practice should I end up going in the end. :)
Sure! :D
How on earth can she afford it though?!
I was able to talk to Jenson during the Sepang driver signing. :) The others, not so much. :(
You've got your own blog... ;)
I AM JEALOUS
Maybe she's working in the paddock?
I am jealous too. She is a british GP. http://backpackersguidetof1.vox.com/
Bahrain not updated yet and Australia no where to be seen yet but should be coming soon
journeyer wrote one recently: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/08/a-view-of-sepang/
basically a description of your adventures and pics if you have any. as mentioned, email to christine. cheers sir.
wow!
In Singapore I met an English girl who was doing that race, then Japan and China, 3 races was enough to make me jealous!
I can do a post for Malaysia too I was there and very wet also. Now in Bahrain and feel like I'm being baked alive.
Sounds excellent!
Time to pull her into the SidePodCommunity.
Assuming she has the time to go online, though. ;)
Oooh, please do! Where did you sit? And did you go to any of the autograph sessions?
you approve of commenters being baked alive? shame on you.
:D
Is it wrong that my line of thought became '10,000 pounds for all the races? I could do that'
Then I realised a home base in Australia makes it much dearer than a base in England, and I'm trying to get a house deposit together. Ahh reality, you crush me so.
Hi Journeyer I was in stand F opposite the hairpin. I had my son with me so standing in a queue for autographs wasn't going to happen.
I won the online competition to go Go Karting with some F1 drivers Kristian Klien and Vitantonio Liuzzi and some other celebs will put it in the blog post and also won a toyota pit tour so got access to the paddock.
I have had a couple of very nice F1 weekends.
Too true... :(
WOW! Awesome! :D
Toyota pit tour? You met Timo Glock?
My aim is to one day visit either Monza or the Nurburgring for an F1 race.
Simple Scott. You see there is an alley and consider that someone could come out of it and approach it cautiously. It's like people who say a car shot out of a side road. The road exists for one reason to connect with the one you are on. It exists for traffic to switch from your road to it or vice versa. An alley exists for people to enter or exit it on to the road. So it should not be unexpected when that happens
Oh boy...
Sorry RG the drivers went for a meeting after practice so I was in the garage when they all went to the meeting. Some awesome gear in there though.
I did see Flavio Briatore, Peter Sauber, Norbert Haug and Mr Schumacher.
That's quite an optimistic budget. £20,000 is probably closer to it...
Aww well. Nice to see you saw some nice stuff in there though
Was that too 'fanboy-istic'?
Hehehe.
Not that you'd have been allowed it, probably - only Mall ticketholders were allowed in for the signing - which was at the mall.
WOW. Just... wow.
Hahaha!
Michael or Ralf? I saw Michael from the stands, I saw Ralf just 5 feet to my right while I was getting my F1 Racing signed...
I'm not a budget-hostel general-admission ticket sort of person, so I definitely couldn't do it for cheap.
I think she said it could be past that already. She was in the Ritz drinking cocktails on Friday night so she isn't doing this on the cheap thats for sure.
Did she win the lottery or something?
Micheal he was in the Ferrari hospitality place in the paddock. I was told I couldn't take any photos though.
Journeyer do you live in Malaysia?
Thought as much. To do it for £10,000 you'd have to paddle your own canoe to the overseas rounds!
That would make for a great guest post!
Nope - I live in the Philippines - 3 hour flight away from KL and Singapore (which I went to last year).
And not get shot by the Navy!
Just curious, Nathan - the name of the blog owner is Harry. How is he related to the girl you met?
Just spotted this on Twitter:
http://twitter.com/FakeLouise/statuses/1630336578
And JB's response:
http://twitter.com/fakejenson/statuses/1630410621
Will you go to Singapore this year? I live in Thailand and it's easy and cheap for me to get to KL and Singapore. Maybe we can meet up for an Asian Sidepodcast meeting
Its short for harriet.
Evening. :)
this blog reminds me that I don't want to go to China
hey dom.
Reminds me I don't want to go back to china. I went in 2005 it was awful.
Nah - I drained my savings just to go to Singapore last year.
But I would suggest you meet up with Wolf... http://www.f1wolf.com
He drops by here pretty often, too. ;)
Ahhh!
shes very negative on KL as well, I want to go there next year.
I like this story from the site:
But she wrote that before China. If KL came after China, she'd have been much more positive. ;)
I managed fine, so you should too. An umbrella and a raincoat are essentials, though. And probably a seat in the start-finish grandstand, as well, if you want Heikki's autograph... :)
Already got his, but another won't hurt ;) Closer to the time I'll have to bug you about grandstand recommendations, because I know I'll forget. I'm buying my Melbourne tickets on Friday though :D
Well I love KL. Flew Air Asia from Thailand about $20 Tune hotel clean, comfortable but small $4 per night. Food is great shopping is fantastic. F1 venue very nice and easy to get to.
The cheap prices are what is attracting me, it cost me far too much to go to Singapore last year and as much as I'd like to go back, I also like being able to afford to eat and pay my rent.
Agreed, agreed. Did you take the KLIA Transit package?
BTW, did you have any problems leaving the circuit? Especially when the heavens opened on Saturday night?
Tickets go on sale sometime in November, I think - just after the end of this season.
Best to stay in Johor Bahru if you go to Singapore GP Malay prices and just a short trip to the Singapore MRT
...if you bear the human crunch at the MRT, especially at the end of each day. Personally, I was ecstatic I just had to walk to my hotel rather than put my girlfriend and myself through that.
my accommodation wasnt too bad actually, it was mainly the flights and race tickets themselves, plus thats where I bought the infamous sunglasses
*if you CAN bear - which is easier said than done, TBH.
Well yes we took the KLIA transit package pretty quick transfer by train! On the Saturday we waited for 1hr30 for a shuttle bus in the Thunderstorm 1 umbrella 4 people my son is 4 years old and was really freezing. We were lucky to stop a taxi or we could have been there all night.
our flight was dirt-cheap. it was the accommodation and the race tickets that cost us.
Sunday night I was so glad to be staying within walking distance after they stopped people from entering City Hall station.
We had no problem with the MRT especially race day as we stayed for the Wailers concert
Very lucky to find a taxi in that kind of downpour... did they rip you off for their fare?
We actually decided to avoid that entrance on Sunday night, after we got stuck in the pedestrian underpass for 30 minutes on Saturday night. We went out through the Padang entrance instead.
I had no idea that they had to stop people altogether from entering City Hall station.
Maybe that's why you didn't have problems with it. I wasn't all that thrilled with last year's acts. With the FOM-Universal deal this year, though, that will probably change...
I found it hilarious that 6 months earlier I'd been watching Kiss in Melbourne, and there I was, in Singapore, watching a Beatles tribute band.
So much entertainment on in Singapore no need to rush back to hotel.
Brilliant. Pure genius!
I wonder if these are all run by the same guy... Or are these really different people, that interact with each other as if they're the F1 people themselves?
I was very surprised it was very reasonable about 10RM which I was happy to pay
i think we may need to make the following (for research purposes clearly):
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/74914
Hehe. :)
My girlfriend and I weren't too interested in any of them - and we really wanted to get some rest. Not to mention we had to fly out on Monday morning... ;)
Why aren't those taxi drivers in KL?!
I'm laughing just thinking about it.
Aah, memories
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc05549-jpg
For a future Panel, perhaps? ;)
The bottom one sounds amazing.
They better not be the Bloomfields! :D What's the name of the band?
I like the top one more. Mmmm, mint...
Off out into the real world again. I know its ceiling has to be high but do its walls have to be so far apart?
:D
From Journeyers blog post "We got the less extravagant ‘one-bus-fits-all’ option. My dad asked how one bus could be a parade"
In Bahrain the parade was taking the drivers onto the startfinish straight so everyone could see them on the bigscreen monitors then asking a few questions. No parade at all!!
Heh. Even China got a drivers parade. But hey, public pitlane walkabout on Thursday - can't argue with that. ;)
not a clue, I just got out my programme, they weren't even listed in it :D
looking at the race brochure (not the programme), their name is 'the australian beatles show'. make of that what you will.
apparently it was these guys
http://www.fabfour.com.au/
how the heck did the SGP organizers find these guys?!
Best thing of the weekend was interupting Eddie Jordan eating his breakfast to sign a photo I took with him in Malaysia.
now I'm really keen to see what Melbourne will be putting on next year ;)
On that note, I'm going to bed :) night all!
Gnight Amy
Vettel looks like Eddie out of Bottom there!
1989. Easy!
How gracious of him to sign it. Not very polite, though. :P
G'night, Amy.
Vote for it on the poll on my blog then ;)
He was great both times I met him. He was really just having a coffee and a chat to some other journos I think.
Oil Museum FTW!
Devistated that I couldn't go to the oil museum but the F1 was on.
I spoke to a bored Alfa Touring car driver called Giampiero Simoni in Italian (it was his turn to sign autographs). His face perked up and we had a great little chat. Smashing bloke!
And there's the Ayrton Senna stopped right in front of me moment.
!!!!
Nice! Very nice!
He WHAT?! Tell, tell!!!
Really? Don't think you've mentioned that yet ;)
YES, PLEASE DO!!!! :D
Don't leave us hanging like this, Gavin. :P
I did - I was doing a Steven Roy and post trawling ;)
I went to see an Oil Rig yesterday. I wish I could show you the pics - man that thing was big!
Hehehe
Howdy all, anyone noticed that the desktop doohickey has now turned into a desktop lclt?
Tres cool
I spoke about it on a panel a few weeks ago (It was yours Journeyer). At the 1993 European Grand Prix on the victory lap he stopped right in front of me because his flag got caught in his wheel. I have a pic somewhere!
Oh, thaaaat! I remember. I thought he was at Autosport, and he stopped walking in front of you... :P
Well the oil museum here is about the size of a bus. Really nothing to get exited about but I bet the oil rig was awesome!
drop.io! Now! :D
I never went to autosport - the other event was at a car show....
Very Discovery Channel-like, probably. :D
He'd have to find it first. ;)
ahhh... got confused with how the convo went. :D
Anyway, it's almost 2 AM here, gotta knock off.
See y'all in the morning. :D
Night Mr Journeyer
gnight Journyer
I have no scanner so I'll take a picture of it...
hardcore! goodnight!
pic of me and nico on thursday http://drop.io/dxthai1
Sweet. Looks awesome
Nico, eat a sandwich!
I'm seeing the new ones
I soooooooo hate you now ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc01517-jpg
and
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc01509-jpg
I've been modded for linking to my Senna pic. It's on dropio now...
Im trying to ad more but drop.io is disagreeing with google chrome it seems
That's probably a good argument to get rid of KERS. I know Williams aren't running their flywheel system but look what it's making the drivers do. It's turning them into skinny things and as you saw in the pictures, it's making them start to look unhealthy and even faint because of the heat a la Alonso. All because they want to nullify the weight disadvantage that KERS brings. Before you know it, we'll get reports of an N. Grebsor checking into Annorexics Anonymous.
Martin Brundle! MARTIN BLOOMIN BRUNDLE!, I am so jealous
Just seen the pic, Gav. Very niiiiice :D
No chance of me running KERS then!! I think Kubica is really looking ill.
Cheers. That was the moment I became hooked on F1, I reckon :)
Loving his facial expression :D
He had just been told he has a facebook fanclub
Hehehee :D
I think R.G's exploding right now at the latest pic.
Its only Timo's garage. Not Timo itself
Still Timo-related though :P
I've a few more but I will put them on Picasa drop.io is taking ages
I'm not that fanboy-istic
Are Elf and Total the same company??
Yup, Total bought them out apparently.
Yup. My colleaugue used to work for Total. They bought Elf 10 years ago and decided to keep the brands separate...
I see just Red Bull have all Total logos but using elf fuel and lubricants
Same juice then.
Evening everyone. A quick comment trawl then I'll disappear for food and homework...
Nice one. :-) If you didn't mention later on, what stats are you planning? I'm thinking of points graphs for mine.
that is really cool!
updated more pics to http://picasaweb.google.com/dxthai/F1Bahrain#
drop.io not working well
Disagree. Does it matter if it retains relevance in six months? I can't imagine many people will be checking. SPC is all about what's going on now.
I will send my malaysia pics there too
Gavin, bout time ;) Erm, how about 'The Day I Met Senna' ;) host it at either Blogspot or Wordpress and use Windows Live Writer to write the stuff
yes. very much so.
in part because we frequently search and retrieve old comments, and it's important that they retain context. also, because we plan to do more with comment searching in the future.
you should add your photo link to the wiki page too.
we're about the now... but also the then ;)
What is this WIndows Live Writer you speak of and what makes it so good?
Aye, I like going through old posts looking for stuff I may have posted. (When I'm checking for something at least). Its a good reference
Comes with the new Windows Live Messenger I believe.
Live Writer is awesome.
http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/
Mr C convinced me, I found it is just really helpful, publishes straight to the blog, loads of options
it's the best things about windows.
OK will do Malayasia pics available at http://picasaweb.google.com/dxthai/F1Sepang2009#
Seeing as I downloaded it, I'm not just setting myself up for WLW. :)
Included toyota pics for RG
are you stalking martin brundel? ;)
Cheers sir ;)
look at the sweat on that blue shirt...
I think he is stalking me.
Eddie commented on the sweaty shirt when I saw him here in Bahrain.
nathan, they are brilliant pics. thank you.
I managed to get my pics with Tonio Liuzzi, Eddie Jordan and Martin Brundle blown up to A4 and signed.
Hahaha, windows, you are funny. It originally told me that i couldnt install LiveWriter because the 'current installation is corrupt' - I don't even have it installed :D
Working fine now though installationwise.
Scott Woodwiss: 27/04/2009 at 19:38:33
What is this WIndows Live Writer you speak of and what makes it so good?
Comes with the new Windows Live Messenger I believe.
I've seen the website but what is it? A better blog editor than the one offered with blogger for example?
that and more.
At this race, you'll have their phone numbers by the next race :D
5 Pints of Awesome? :)
Going back in time but... the doohickey suggestions are only going to work if the doohickey works on your computer. Yes I've played, and spent time trying to sort it all, including trying other browsers but it doesn't like it (and after a days poddling around I have other things to spend my computer time on!)
OK, so this laptop is clunky and runs XP, but it isn't actually 'out of date' as such, but the doohickey refuses to work...
I like the lclt, but generally I read and post on the actual threads only. I don't think I'm the only one...
On the plus - DS always feels better for RTRC as well :-)
(but then I'm also quite happy to sustain and follow a conversation over several different posts/threads and think that its good brain exercise to do so roflrofl)
Wow, this WLW is awesome! It's like I'm writing a blog post by just pressing a button and doing it on the front page instead (if that makes any sense). All my fonts and text sizes are there ready and waiting. It's brilliant!
So is this what you guys use for the posts on here then? ;)
Maybe just 4.
Bernd Maylander was awesome too! He took out the safety car so everyone could have a good look at it. He was nice enough to stay around and have a chat with me.
RG I wish I was going to the next race. My next one will be Singapore Im afraid. I'm back to the pub on the weekend for the next 6 months I guess.
Unfortunately it is not available for Mac.
....hmm. I just got a phone call saying our work is temporarily closed. No further details :/
Yeah, understanable, can't go to them all.
Unless you have that £10k ;)
Just watching the BAFTAs on iPlayer - are they trying to makes James Allen sound as bad as possible in that clip?
10k or a canoe so I can padle there!
Is the lclt broken? It doesn't want to retrieve any posts...
Haha. So true. I'd set off about last year then ;)
Quote of the weekemd was when I met Alonso he just got dropped off for the autograph signings and he came over to shake hands with the fans. After I shook hands and said good luck my mum said "who is he?" I've been laughing ever since she has been to 5 Grand prix already
correct me if i'm wrong... but isn't andy a genius for a living?
...wow. OK, Live Writer is very impressive.
Isn't it just! I've been using it to write up my SSG for about 5 mins now and I love it already :D
I wish I was in a blogging mood tonight to properly try it out, but my mind is blank :(
how bout a post on bbc's coverage of f1 so far.
what with itv winning a bafta for their awful coverage, how many awards might the beeb win?
Is there a reason itunes wouldn't download all sidepodcasts. All my others were up to date but the last Aside with Joe and Puddles was missing.
and sidepodchat
Why is it so impressive?
erm. seems okay to me. anyone else having issues?
sounds like a plan! Will take a shower, have a think of what to say, and write up something along those lines, perhaps a comparison of the two channels :)
It just seems to have skipped over them and downloaded the qualifying sidepodcast
can you see them in the list? is there an 'x', or are they simply missing?
They were in the list just itunes did'nt auto download them!
annoying. presumably, you can right click and force them to download?
lclt test
Ah okay.
Guess it's just an issue with my itunes if noone else has troubles.
hello?
Yeah hi, was having lclt problems earlier...
Seems to be like all recent app websites, it is very very vague and completely hopeless at explaining what it does. You only know what it is when you use it. I may try it later, or later in the week. But right now I'm struggling to see what the fuss is about. Mind you I said the same about Twitter.
It's just easy really, you could use wordpress but i do prefer Live Writer and i've only written one post on it.
Is it a WYSIWYG editor like Blogger's one. I must say, the one blogger used annoyed the Piquet out of me...
I don't really have any problems with it - it works well enough for the basic stuff I do. But you never know, maybe MS has come up with something I don't know I need..
it was a quality product and then MS bought it. thankfully, they've not ruined it yet.
And that's my first blog post all done on WLW.
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2009/04/f1-2009-super-season-grid-post-bahrain.html
Interesting results after Bahrain, I find.
Just curious - were my graphs useful to you?
Ok just a warning now about my BBC-ITV post, it's going to be long. Not even half way and it's 4 or 5 big paragraphs...
Lukeh-rant? ;)
You found some motivation then :)
To be honest I haven't used them yet. Will get round to them though :)
You're probably OK with updating them yourself I guess? If you have any probs, you're more than welcome to ask me for help ;)
I might try having a go at some myself, but I've never really tried it on Excel 2007.
OK well I will be happy to do that for you then :D
What I was really after was some line graphs but with points, and the values starting from 0 at the top to whatever the gap is between the fastest and slowest. That way they can track the progress of every driver along the season.
I don't follow you?
Jenson's posted his Bahrain diary :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elpMACnJdfw
Gone quiet in here *echoes*
Dropped me memory stick.
Somewhere
Still writing... :P
wow.
You know the thing about dentists children and teeth....
this is the thing, if I cant think of anything i genuinely am empty on creativity with writing. you give me an idea and I'll write a book about it, it's my ridiculosuly unbalanced mind :P
understood ;)
That's not fair. Even if I was a Genius (which I'm not, yet), how would that make me able to fix Windows problems.
Better not to mention I used to support PCs all the time, but I really don't know why the doohickey didn't work on LPG's machine.
Goodness me I'm bored
hey jackie.
fair enough. bizarre collection of plugins?
Scott, just dropioing the updated file with what I *think* you want?
Hi me .. you feeling any better?
The Digest has just been posted, if you want something to listen to for ten minutes :)
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/27/f1-digest-2009-bahrain-gp/
Memory stick found. Always in the first place you look, after you looked in ten million places after looking for the first time
Cheers Christine, thanks :D
Good night all - I'm knackered and the bikes have just finished :)
somewhat. probably need one more night of long sleeps and all will be well.
Night Gavin ;)
Night Gavin
see ya gavin.
What plugins...
rofl - maybe that's the problem - not enough exterraneous 'stuff' running in the background pmsl.
Maybe I just need a downday and try it all again... but then again, we used to have a printer I called 'the other woman' because it would do anything for Andy, and refuse to work more than 10% of the time for me - and that was in the days (dim, distant past erk!) when we had but one computer between us....
Now... how could this be applied to racing cars? teehee
There's a job waiting for you in a Government Department :)
Haha :D
iSport next to consider entering F1?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74916
Here's the new blog entry - Welcome home Formula 1 :)
http://toata.blogspot.com/2009/04/12-welcome-home-formula-1.html
Very nice, Lukeh - you did forget Simon Taylor though. Then again, so had everyone else :D
I like that you number the posts.
Wooo. Will comment after I finished my media homework
He's not a relative by the way. That's a different Simon Taylor.
Err, I number them by date...
But yeah, intresting idea Lukeh
I wouldn't be surprised if I've missed a few things out, despite all that writing... just something that always seems to happen :P
simon taylor?
He used to be a pundit back in the early days of the ITV coverage. Best known for being sea-sick on the yacht that they used one year at Monaco. I think he's written some books too. Doctor Vee mentions him in his article about the ITV years.
Ohh I remember him now when ITV first started up alongside Jardine. He just seemed to drop off though, just disappeared and noone seemed to mention it...
luke, that is fine, fine read. good man, good work.
thank you for the idea I should say :D
Evenings :)
He does an interview every month in Motorsport with old drivers and stuff. Atleast I think its him.
Like Mike Young in Neighbours who went to see his mum in Perth and was never mentioned again?
Great digest Christine :)
Agreed, great listen :)
Don't tell anyone but I'm testing out a secret doohickey.
ooooh, secret eh :P
Did Christine make a comment just then?
Now that's a gaffe of RG proportions. You'l have to tell us about it now. Or sing YMCA.
Is it all black and covered in odd-shaped white stickers to disguise the changes? ;)
Why am I in the same sentance as gaffe and proportions? with of in between
Oh err
shh, don't tell anyone:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/realtime/?
That looks awesome :D
Yay! :)
I was merely comparing Christine's last post with your propensity to divulge information that might be better kept to yourself.
Looking at it. Could it cause people using it for the first time to forget about that and post in the latest thingy, so that it might not be a daily?
Aaah, fair enough then.
Ah, I get it - so you select a thread from the drop down menu and then comment, yes?
Awesome!!
possibly. can make it default to daily. gimmie a minute.
:)
not quite, drop.io integration is currently being worked on. should be an hour or so.
Exactly that. Reply on a thread not selected should be greyed out.
Great. Nice to see my ideas being implemented then ;)
That was remarkably quick work MrC... unless it just seems so because I only read the conversation 2 hours ago... but anyway, impressive stuff. It's exactly how I imagined it when I read it explained.
Yup, just spotted that too. It's true what they say - the little things make a huge difference :)
*hugs possible Newhickey*
Good stuff mr c! :D
the spc community rocks!
This is a great idea. :)
I like :D
I heart the Newhickey!
Newhickey!!! I LOVE!
desktop should also reflect changes.
I (heart) Newhickey.
Should this be Doohickey (RC1) then? :D
ctp, no?
We really have to give massive credit and thanks to Mr C for producing this "upgraded" Doohickey while still rather ill. He didn't have to do it but he has and I'm sure you'll all agree when I say that he is simply brilliant, and we appreciates it very much. Thank you! :)
Agreed, thannkkkyoou :D
Either that or Doohickey 2 beta.
won't let me post after changing thread
Whatever we call it, it's awesome. Thank you so much.
tbh, it was a case of not knowing how to do it. until this afternoon's conversation i was clueless of where to start. implementing a solution is relatively easy. knowing the direction is the big problem.
hmm, what happens jackie?
When it pours, ain't it useful
Though his nose gets a chilling
He'll mess and play, the sidepodcast way
Walking in a Mr C wonderland
Test comment from the new Doohickey.
I changed back to the daily and clicked reply (greyed out) the only other option I get after that is cancel
Yup, works fine for me :D
maybe I did something silly? It initially allowed me to change to the digest thread but not to post again on the daily after selcting the daily from the drop down list
ok. not meant to happy. what's your browser/os?
Using firefox and windows vista
does the quick comment button work for you?
Soooo...
Who wants Bahrain GP wallpapers?
http://www.f1grandprix.it/css/wallindex.asp
nope I tried that first .. here's a screen shot of what I get http://i39.tinypic.com/2lbc2ah.jpg
that is very odd. is it firefox 3, or an older version?
It did work for the first comment I posted and then also worked when I changed to digest thread .. it was the change back to the daily it objected to
Its the latest version of firefox
I'll relaunch the new doohickey see if that solves it
Hello this is quick comment
This is reply
Yay! :D
Hmm wierd they both work now after re-launching the program. Maybe I did something silly
Suppose I should actually see how this 'new' stuff works.
It's gone very quiet, Is everyone happy?
sidepodsmugness
:D
?
sidepod-smug-ness
Oops I read that as sidepod mugness
sorry, was busy hugging the newhickey :P
:D
Now we have the doohickey back, all we need is something to talk about. ;)
It's cool. Thank you so much for fixing it, especially as you were feeling poorly
I saw a game online where you have to type your username with your elbow .. could try that :)
ace!
ljuk,nh
Yess!!
I tried it and got gobbldygook
How about:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74916
My guess - Bruno's going there in 2010 if they do it.
I need sharper elbows
Not to be attempted by any cabinet minister then.
I hate slow computers, and slower printers.
n nmdede
ssssscootgt w2ioodwiswsw
:D
it's harder than you think!
rg
well that was easy
eggtfpl0o5
to quote anchorman...
I'm not even angry, that's just impressive
Oh dear. Should I read on? Last time Jackie said she was bored we ended up with a new religion.
Did you cheat?
*blush*
hey everyone, thought i'd come say hi, because my busy day has led me to need interaction and communication with people. so hi. is everyone well? Mr C's still alive i see.
This is actually so easy I may make a mistake to be kind to other people
lets be fair, its only a 'r' and a 'g'
Hi Lou, Hi Steven
THERES A NEWHICKEY/!!!
hiya lou :D mr c has a new doohickey!
It's awesome, and works very well! I've been hugging it :D
Heya lou n steven
you could do the timo thing as well ;)
One major development - the Doohickey is back! :D
Every time Jackie says she is bored something big happens
challenge!
You want me to stop being bored?
hmmm, timo thin?
it is?!
Better than ever! :D
you may need to clear your browser cache, or append a question mark:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/realtime/?
Can you get back on the daily now Lukeh?
Omid Djalili on BBC1 :D
was that with your elbow?
New doohickey test
It works
Doohickey rules.
Yep, jumping between threads in the newhickey is seamless and perfect it seems :)
:D
OOOOO I like. I like alot. Mr C you are genius!
One question, when I change the thread at the top of the screen, the comments below don't change to that particular thread..........just need clearing up on that.
Okay so its just me that tried to break it :(
if i were a genius, we wouldn't have needed to pull it in the first place :)
Thats what its supposed to do, its just to prevent cross-thread commenting
genius's have their off days too ;)
i heafrt nedwshickedyth/timko
i dont do this doing it long thing
He was ill, off day, makes perfect sense
So, if I chose to Quick Comment with the Digest thread selected, that message would go into the Digest thread?
oh.. a genius in the making? :P it's certainly made me smile after the tiring day i've had, so thanks :)
Correct.
yep. :)
Ooo
Ok, so I'm having to run firefox... but what ever you've done this now works (it didn't work in anything before...)
Nice. Sad to see Chris Evans isn't around, damn.
w00t!
Doohickey and Lclt both worked fine for me most times in FF2 and FF3, LPG. But there was times when neither worked at all, but I'd blame that mostly on my crappy internet.
Phew, I have a sore throat now after that massive blog entry..
Hmm?
Good one though ;)
Planning to do a week long special from tomorrow about what I love in F1.
Sounds good!
lol :-) all I know is that it is... but that I may still continue as I did before anyway.
wrt internet - I'm on the same connection as AndyT here so not a connection issue from that pov.
lol... and nothing done by anyone to this computer at all rofl
does this mean im going to have to do a why im a bit sick of f1 atm? to balance it out
srtrevernmb r0u7y
Typing with your elbows is not as easy as I thought. Although the last sentence seems quit good
:D
That's not bad :D
Meh, thats next week ;)
Of course next week in my terms is probably October
aaaah sidepodtime ;)
Apart from getting you to use a proper browser :)
One thing worth thinking about on the KERS / driver weight discussion from earlier. It is important to remember that the real culprit in this is not KERS or the weigh limit but the tyre spec. The front tyres are too wide compared to the rears so teams have to move weight forward to maximise performance. Had the FIA specced the tyres properly or switched to the 2010 spec which Bridgestone want to test soon there would be no problem with drivers putting on weight.
Quick comment test.
That isn't fair - I've tried using firefox before without anything doing anything except that message in the little yellow box...frrrrrrttttt!!
Although you should consider yourself lucky not to have lost the rest of the biscuits for that comment, given that they are right next to me!
So now we can make the first comment in a thread from the newhickey even if we can't read the post there in the first place.
Guess the thread contents game?
correct. although we may lightbox the post content, just like a drop.io picture at some point in the future.
I've heard of girlpower but biscuitpower? ;)
mr rg will be departing now for platfrom sheep 1. Ciao
If they are penguins, I'll have lost it for them
Did it make any difference to the comment count when the doohickey was down?
night rg.
erm, don't think so. we maxed out 200,000 total comments during the race.
Night RG
night buddy :)
wow that's impressive
I can see that being fun and I can see Christine coming up with some intresting titles to keep us going.
50% of the comments are this year which is insane
that's even more impressive
I see on th newhickey that if you click reply it stops new posts coming in as before but if you click quick comment the comments keep coming in.
Lol.
Although when he noticed that reply the biscuits were very smartly moved! I wasn't going to eat any of them anyway teehee.
Although this is the point where I give up on the PC and wander bedwards with a book instead to see if I can shut down the round in circles brain that is keeping me awake and attempt to redress the serious sleep deficit that the last couple of weeks have wrought!
oops. i fix.
When did ocelots make the list?
Good night then LPG, sleep well. I should try that myself as well since I don't sleep well
or should i. actually, that isn't a problem, is it?
I wouldn't have thought it's a problem, users have a choice. Personally I like the option of slowing things down when the comments come very fast
night lpg.
was about to say, i quite like it like that personally...
Not necessarily. Just an observation. Like a few others if I am on another tab I click reply and that holds new comments till I come back. I then click on th new posts black square thing and that loads them but because the reply boc is open it is easy to find where I was. The last time I clicked the quick comment button and it didn't work so I won't do it again.
the reason it pauses on a reply, is so that the page doesn't jump around. with the quick comment being fixed, it would probably be an overkill.
Agreed
Just testin newhickey from G1.
Just testing quotes.
can you "quote" "" quotemarks?
Certainly can try.
seems so
On a musical note, here's a song that Chris Evans showed me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAtXKS9ZxvM
Wasn't a big fan at first, but love it now. Gonna acquire an album by these guys, might become a fan. Even if I don't like the album much, thanks very much to Chris for a brilliant song. Watch the video too if you can, I saw the Making Of bit for it and wow, amazing.
good stuff.
Wow, that's a good song actually! Just watching now :)
Quite like that .. weird video though
Just found Mutemath on Spotify :)
Argh, why can't people rip music at 192 kbs max. Having 10MB for a 4 or 5 minute song is crazy.
I'm heading off for the night. See you guys later.
I heart the new-hickey Thank you both :D
g'night jackie :)
night jackie.
Doohickey! It returns! I like.
Oh, and morning.
hey ya sean. how are ya?
Tired, of course. You?
not so bad. just fixing doohickey / drop.io bugs.
Good night Jackie
Listening to Mutemath's album - really good!
I'm uh......totally being legal and buying it right now *cough* ;)
Should be done in the next hour or so.
Really looking forward to the Batracer race now.
This is a test of the new doohickey just to see what happens when someone posts in an older thread...
