Ah, it was an eventful day yesterday both on and off track in Bahrain, and back here in Sidepodcast Towers. Here are some of the things you might have missed:

  • Brawn GP have started to wonder whether it is their one-lap pace that is letting them down in qualifying, which equally has a knock-on effect going into the Grand Prix in itself. Button lines up behine Toyota and Red Bull on the grid, with Barrichello further behind. Branson must still have faith in them though, as he is in Bahrain to discuss further sponsorship.
  • In Sidepodcast news, you may have noticed the Doohickey as disappeared, and is currently redirecting to the LCLT. We got in a bit of a mess with comments yesterday and couldn't afford the admin overhead to sort out all the posts to the correct threads. Apologies for anyone this inconveniences, but we're doing our best to rectify the situation.
  • And of course, it would be remiss of me to not point out the good luck charm I have sent Felipe's way. It's great fun to record a song about F1, and there seems to be some interest in the comments to do the same. I encourage everyone to do so, as RG has set up a wiki page to catalogue all our efforts.

That'll do it for now. We're mostly counting down the hours till the racing starts, and then once that's done, it'll be looking forward to the podcasts. See you in the (LCLT) comments.

I'm a little worried this weekend about the negative feelings resonating from the Brawn drivers. jenson seems really amazed at how the lack of pace is affecting the car in Bahraina nd I'm still really concerned about Rubens, he just seemed totally upset (which kinda upsets me in turn) but maybe it's just Bahrain, lou was saying earlier how the honda cars never did perform amazingly well here so who knows. They still have a very good car, which must be remembered for sure :)

I'd really not "worry" about it. It's only round 4 and they've won 2 races, could possibly win 3 out of 4. They're going to have races where they're not the best, even Ferrari did in the dominance. When you might need to worry is at Catalunya. Bahrain is ****ing dull anyway so it can sod off.

I missed it so I knocked together something with AJAX and the RSS "recent comments" feed... - Theres a nasty hidden form field that specifies what thread to reply in though which means it isn't going to work for posting...

I bought a bottle of St Germain earlier (on sale, not seen it anywhere for *years* and there it was, pretty bottle and all...) Have suggested that DP should photograph and drop.io but he hasn't bitten...

(probably ought to add that St germain is an 'elderflower based liqueur' as its possibly not a well known drink outside of cocktail or bar circuits - I only know about it as it is a major flavour in an interesting cocktail or few; oh heck long story....)

Vettel will stop on Lap 17.9. Make of that what you will!

But seriously, they have slightly different guestimates to the others. Vettel is stopping a lot later in their version...

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 00:17

Oh, and my post timestamps are still messed up... I hope that doesn't cause problems or anything.

  • Andy Taylor26/04/2009 at 00:17

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 00:19

Another example of poor statistical analysis. They should have said lap 17 or 18.

Very odd, actually... I guess the lap they'll stop on depends on what fuel mix they'll use for the race. They can go for a slightly less rich mix so that they can stretch to lap 18, or use a richer mix and pit on lap 17. I guess it will depend on DerSeb's pace relative to the Toyotas.

  • Bassano Clapper26/04/2009 at 00:19

One interesting point from the Graham Hill film. We have heard a lot this year about big drivers having a disafvantage as if it is something new. When Jackie Stewart became Hill's team mate in 1965 JYS had a straight line advantage because he was shrter and could run a lower windscreen and therefore had less drag.

Can someone explain to me why Webber is running so light at the back? Is it so he can make some progress early?

Looks like it has been done to let him pass cars early. Maybe he will start on the softer tyres and try to gain as many places as possible before doing a couple of longer stints on the hards.

Does that mean you need to swap it for a new one next time out?

It wasn't severely damaged, but we will be using a new engine in Hungary, which is comfortably inside the limit of 8 we're allowed. ;)

I will however be watching the race live today.

    Morning all.

Beautiful day outside, nice day for some football followed by some Formula 1. And the BTCC is on today as well, should catch that after the F1. Sooo, hi.

Goodness, the Internet is crawling today. I hope it improves before the race - or else I'll have to forget about having a BBC stream. :(

Real life lap record is 1'19.071 by Schumacher, so this is something that needs fixing.

Hehehe, I won't say it' true to real life since the 2009 carset is technically still a WIP. They just released it with all the basic gameplay functions for people to play it, mainly so it was out in time with Melbourne. They're still to add some bits in and some performance adjustments I should imagine. If they want to make this carset as real as possible, I shouldn't have thought they'll keep the cars running 8 seconds faster than the actual lap record for too long!

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 08:50

Checking last year's qualifying times, even they're running in the 1'19s.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 08:54

  • Bassano Clapper26/04/2009 at 15:38

    Whaaat? What did I say?

Etymologically, his sixteenth-century contemporaries adopted and used the adjective Machiavellian (elaborately cunning), often in the introductions of political tracts offering more than government by “Reasons of State”, most notably those of Jean Bodin and Giovanni Botero; while contemporary, pejorative usage of Machiavellian (anti-Machiavellism in the 16th C.) is a misnomer describing someone who deceives and manipulates others for gain; (personal or not, the gain is immaterial, only action matters, insofar as it effects results). The Prince hasn’t the moderating themes of his other works; politically, “Machiavelli” denotes someone of politically-extreme perspective;[7] however Machiavellianism remains a popular speech and journalism usage; while in psychology, it denotes a personality type.

I dunno, I was really embarrassed for british people when they started throwing stuff at him in that box in london. That was very sad to witness. But his stunts sometimes just annoy me personally, like standing on a pole for days, or sitting in some ice. Why? I just don't get him.

  • Steven Roy26/04/2009 at 17:05

Yeah, we’d probably have to give up half way through, less. Assuming our necks could withstand it

We wouldn't be able to drive the car in the first place let alone last more than a couple of laps if we could. I am surprised to see a modern driver in that condition though. When downforce levels started getting silly at the end of the 70s/start of the 80s it was quite common for drivers to collapse after races in hot countries/ Since then with training, diets etc it is not really a problem. Maybe the weight loss in the winter is killing stamina this season combined with the insane schedule.

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:35

Is it still Ferrari’s worst start to the season after Kimi’s points today?

    Looking it up:

In terms of points, no. Ferrari scored 3 points today, they only scored 2 points on Race 4 in 1980 and 1981.

In terms of position, yes. 2 points back then was for 5th place, 3 points now is only for 6th place.

All in all, I'll still say this is their worst start ever.

Thanks Journeyer I actually feel a bit sad that they are so far back. I’m not a huge Ferrari fan but there seems to be something missing this year with them and McLaren so far back

McLaren are en route back to the front. They probably won't catch Brawn, but if Jenson romps to the title, McLaren can aim for 2nd in the Constructors... unless that 30-point penalty does come true on the 29th, which would probably mean they'd have to work hard just to get back up to 4th.

  • Jackie26/04/2009 at 17:38

If it does happen, yep, they'll be on negative points.

Yep big improvement in the McLaren. I still think they’ll get a 2 race ban though

Nah, won't happen. Not with Lewis allying himself with Max. Not to mention Max told him and Anthony not to leave McLaren. It'll be a points deduction and/or a big fine, but nothing more.

  • Jackie26/04/2009 at 17:40

If anything a 30 point reduction would be worse than a ban in terms of their current points haul per race.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 17:40

    Scott, what have you learned?

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:41

But Lewis will still be showing up, and that's what the sponsors and TV networks are concerned about.

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:46

Could a driver race ban happen?

It's possible, but it's the most unlikely scenario. Max is more likely to blame McLaren than Lewis - after all, the rules state that the constructor will be accountable for the driver's actions, especially in this case where the team supposedly ordered him to lie.

And again, Lewis and Anthony have allied with Max, so that won't happen.

    Rubens wasnt THAT slow.

Rubens wasn't really slow at all...

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:50

    how sad. :/

To be fair, Rubens' day today wasn't all that bad, and he's still 2nd in the drivers standings. But he better get a move on, or else Brawn may decide they need a rear gunner to have a better shot at the title...

  • Jackie26/04/2009 at 17:50

    Rubens wasnt THAT slow.

What a shame and uncalled for.

How true .. not that I'm condoning it mind you.

Kubica must be livid after they decided to stop developing last years car to concentrate on the BMW lemon

  • Kris26/04/2009 at 17:53

All in all, I'll still say this is their worst start ever.

I wonder whether they think that internally.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 17:55

How disgraceful of people to say Rubens was slow today. Far from it! He was lapping faster than Jenson at one point. Give the man some credit for goodness sake.

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:55

I wonder whether they think that internally.

I'm sure they are. None of them were working for the team in 1980 - not even LDM, who had been sent to other parts of the Agnelli empire.

For me, 1980 was their worst season ever. It was also the worst defense of a world championship.

Kubica must be livid after they decided to stop developing last years car to concentrate on the BMW lemon

Yup - surely he's sending out feelers to other big teams right now...

How disgraceful of people to say Rubens was slow today. Far from it! He was lapping faster than Jenson at one point. Give the man some credit for goodness sake.

Rubens wasn't slow, but he was slower than Jenson. That's all that matters, really.

  • RG - Get well soon Mr C26/04/2009 at 17:56

But which big team would want him, its similar to the Hamilton scenario really.

Yup - surely he’s sending out feelers to other big teams right now…

Can't see him at BMW next season. Renault, perhaps.

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 17:58

But which big team would want him, its similar to the Hamilton scenario really.

Kubica is less likely to be considered as damaged goods than Hamilton. He's not isolated from other drivers, and he does give better technical input. A bit like Alonso, really.

If Brawn keep up the pace all year, he may look in that direction. Ferrari is a possibility, but Alonso's probably got that covered. Flavio may go after him, but he'd have the same concern as Alonso did - will Renault stay or will they go?

  • Jackie26/04/2009 at 17:58

Better than Istanbul. A real racing track should not allow such a margin for error with such sizable run-off. I might as weell add that I really like Milan. Might not be great at it, but it's a good Monaco substitute.

I thought the coverage of Brazil was actually the best they had ever done... even Steve wasn't too awful and James did a good job, but we know they choose the races based on what happens in them rather than whether the coverage was any good.

It was nowhere near the quality of the BBC Olympic coverage though... I don't understand how anyone could think that...

At the end of the day, think about it - We had this with SARS and sorted it out, we had this wirh bird flu and we sorted it out. If we take the necessary precautions we did with those two then there shouldn't be anything to worry about, should there?

Also considering if it's time to cash in on Rubens, and boot out Nico to get my hands on Webber-Raikkonen or Alonso-Trulli.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 23:39

Also considering if it’s time to cash in on Rubens, and boot out Nico to get my hands on Webber-Raikkonen or Alonso-Trulli.

I had Nico in 1 or 2 of my teams, but based on his performances so far, it's all talk in the practice sessions and no trousers when it comes to qualifying and the race, so it was time to go.

Agreed. Dropped him now for Kubica. Webber-Raikkonen would be too unreliable. Alonso-Trulli was worth considering, but I'm still not sure how Renault's pace would hold up, and I'm not willing to give up a Brawn for that.

I dunno, I've kept Webber in the teams I had him in for Bahrain. His first lap today proved he can be racy when he needs to be. Just a shame he couldn't keep it up. He couldn't get past Piquet!

That's why I don't think it's worth dropping Rubens just to get my hands on him - he's too unreliable and/or unlucky for me to do it.

I would always bet on Kimi against Massa

That proved to be the wrong decision for me in 2008, and so far, Massa has managed to get the team to come round him more than Kimi is trying to.

2008 was a one off. Kimi will sort him out this season

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 23:46

Actually doing that, I have exactly enough to bring Rubens back in and keep 5 drivers :D

  • Bassano Clapper26/04/2009 at 23:46

Should I kick Glock out of ZD as well?

I think Glock will outscore Trulli this year, pitstop & tyres failed him today

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 23:47

Dropped him for Kub and Sutil.

Sutil's pace will prove to be more and more insufficient as the other teams move forward. Not worth it, I think.

Should I kick Glock out of ZD as well?

    Hmmm... Nah.

2008 was a one off. Kimi will sort him out this season

I wish that were true, but Massa has beat him on pace in most races this season. And he would've been up there with Kimi too, had his KERS not conked out.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/04/2009 at 23:47

If Kub does well in Spain, that's a real bargain price I picked him up for.

  • Journeyer26/04/2009 at 23:48

Hehe. Same here. And his price will go up while Nico's goes down.

OK, my interim teams for Spain:

    DFKFM: Button, Heidfeld, Kubica, Vettel

Woodwiss Eng.: Button, Kubica, Vettel, Glock

Aviva: Sutil, Fisi, Button, Kubica, Vettel

Relentless: Sutil, Fisi, Button, Kubica, Glock

ZD: Sutil, Button, Kubica, Barrichello, Vettel

  • Journeyer27/04/2009 at 00:00

“If I were a betting man I’d slide down the bookies and put a few quid on Hamilton to win the title.”

Erm... with them getting either a 30-point penalty or a 2-race ban, that's not the smartest thing to do right now...

I wonder if the FOM graphics can display negative points...

  • Bassano Clapper27/04/2009 at 00:01

Just wondered if it was as great, I mean silly, as the first two

  • Journeyer27/04/2009 at 00:03

    Speculation

I don't think so - everyone's been saying they'll get either one of those 2 punishments. I was initially saying they may just get away with a fine, but it's not looking likely to be the case.

It may be true, but right now, it’s still speculation

Given that it's people like James Allen mentioning it, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt - he has a good record on these things. More importantly, I wouldn't bet on Lewis until the hearing is done.

  • Bassano Clapper27/04/2009 at 00:07

... More importantly, I wouldn’t bet on Lewis until the hearing is done.

I'd agree with that even if the odds go down

  • Scott Woodwiss27/04/2009 at 00:08

    New interim line-up for Relentless:

    Button, Massa, Alonso, Buemi

  • Steven Roy27/04/2009 at 00:08

Erm… with them getting either a 30-point penalty or a 2-race ban, that’s not the smartest thing to do right now…

I reckon they will get a severe warning and a Schumacher Jerez 97 style penalty. The whole thing looks orchestrated. Bernie and Max both saying good things about Lewis. Ryan fired, Ron moving out, Mercedes issuing threats, Whitmarsh sending a written apology. I can't imagine all of that is for any reason other than for a non-penalty to be issued.

  • Bassano Clapper27/04/2009 at 00:09

Suspended sentence is my guess, with a verbal rap on the knuckles

  • Journeyer27/04/2009 at 00:10

    Button, Massa, Alonso, Buemi

I like this one... Why not go for Kubica over Buemi? This lineup is out there, anyway. ;)

Suspended race ban is a good bet, with or without a constructor points deduction.

I like this one… Why not go for Kubica over Buemi? This lineup is out there, anyway.

Didn't think of going for him 'cos I already had him in my others. But seeing as you've mentioned it, I'll give it a go. ;)
