Things really should be all about the racing right now, but there are certain elements of the politics of F1 still hanging over our shoulders. The Donington Park saga still rumbles on but there is plenty more to talk about:
- McLaren have apparently offered the FIA a written apology. Whitmarsh confirms this is true but won't say anymore about what was inside the letter, so the question is, what kind of an effect are they hoping this will have? Will their sentencing (that seems like the appropriate word?) be more leniant because they've said sorry again?
- It's been a while since I've plugged the F1 Big Picture, and it's a pretty good one of Piquet at the moment. This is topical because anyone who is anyone is making bets on how long the youngster will last. His performance hasn't been up to scratch, and surely there's a driver snapping at his heels for the opportunity.
- The SofaF1 Pole Poll continues, and if you're already taking part (or if you want to have a go), you've got until qualifying starts to make your selections. I don't know how I got roped into this, considering how much I dislike making predictions, but it's great fun - even if Mr C is beating me. I don't quite know exactly how the scoring works, but you get points based on whether you select the correct pole sitter and for your guesswork on the top eight points finishers as well. Good luck!
That'll do it for now. It's not long until qualifying gets underway, although thankfully for us in the UK, it's on at a more reasonable time of day. There will be many threads popping up throughout the day, so no doubt I'll see you in the comments.
Continued from yesterday's thread:
If you mean this quote regarding Renault on JA's blog:
"But Alonso had the only example of Renault’s new double diffuser. Here this weekend the team has new parts on both cars, including modifications to the front wing and front suspension."
Couldn't you consider Fernando's China diffuser a new part for Nelson since he didn't have it there?
True, but the way James wrote it, it seems they have the same parts now.
Since when have we ever taken James Allen seriously? ;)
In a good way, or a bad way?
I was written elsewhere (Guardian I think) that Flavio would be able to assess Piquet's performance this weekend as the cars were identical
no. you're looking for a story that isn't there. rf1pp said:
"FA will have the same diffuser he used in China, but Nelson will also have a new diffuser on his car. "
I'd agree with that. They also have some interesting gameplay concepts that should improve gameplay.
I don't think Steven is down with the kidz.
The whole black & white / colour mechanic sounds really interesting.
Bad. Very bad.
The will to fight, as it's named. This game can really be a hit.
steven, have edited your comment so as not to give way the ending.
Two things:
1. It's not like EA is disrespecting the guy. If anything, this will get him and his heroic deeds noticed again.
2. It's only loosely based on the character. Williams was their inspiration, but the character would probably be his own man.
Something tells me that the game will end very much differently from how it really ended.
am talking about the book.
The book is about a whole group of people who worked in the resistance but I probably shouldn't have given that part away.
oh. okay, fair enough.
no worries. just letting ya know.
Agreed and agreed.
I think this game looks like being far more sensitive and faithful to the subject matter than most other WWII games.
Two things - one is that those of us reading the Doohickey have already read what he wrote. The other is that it's not a work of fiction, so does it really matter?
I'm off then, taxii-ng duties first thing so I may catch you all for the later part of FP3,
Good night Jackie
a) sorry, but i don't have a time machine.
b) yes truth can often be stranger than fiction.
see ya jackie.
night jackie
Although his racing career is well known his background and the path his life took aftewards was not common knowledge. I certainly didn't know hat happened to him or any of the others when i read the book.
all right. good night, jackie. :)
It looks like it, but you can never be sure until it's released. that said, the game really looks good at first glance.
night Jackie
Strangely enough, thanks to school projects on the SOE, I know more about him as a resistance fighter than a racing driver.
I never connected that he was the subject-matter. I knew the name only because of his famous win.
Very true.
There is another game due out this year called Velvet Assassin which is based on Violette Szabo, another WWII spy with a fascinating story.
I didn't know schools did anything on SOE. It is great that the subject is covered.
Violette Szabo appears in Joe's book too.
Me neither. When was it declassified? First I heard of them was five or so years ago with a BBC doco
Yup.
All we need is the Cold War to be properly covered now. Luckilly there is a flying tribute to with with an education centre. ;)
When I was at school the GCSE was called "World History Since 1914". Lots of Cold War stuff.
They probably don't nowadays (listen to this week's Now Show for an example of how things have changed), this was over 20 years ago, we also studied and performed the play based on the life of Violette Szabo.
The BBC did a thing called Secret Army in the 70s or 80s. I don't know if they used real names but they covered how the SOE operated in the field. I would guess most of the documents would be de-classified after 30 years other than those that contained names that still had to be protected.
As a separate story or did she cross paths with Williams?
I remember this well. Sadly it's now mainly famous for inspiring 'Allo 'Allo :(
There was a lot of crossover between various resistance networks and the book is not just about Willy Grover. It is about two other drivers as well but it covers some of their training etc where agents met and then were dropped into different networks.
Those of you who have not read Grand Prix Saboteurs really should get your hands on it. It is facinating from so many perspectives.
I've been meaning to get that book for a while, will have to have a look on Amazon come payday.
we really should have a link to it somewhere. will do something after this race.
I'll add it to the list.
:D
Joe used to always have a link on grandprix.com but it is not there any more.
Found the link on Joe's site
http://www.grandprix.com/ft/ft18001.html
that's the one ;)
McCoy's tortillas aren't as nice as Doritos. And the ridges aren't as good as proper McCoys. Underwhelmed.
Once again, I've stayed up too late. Guttingly, I don't finish work until after qualifying tomorrow so I'll have to avoid the results until I can get home and get iPlayer on.
Night all!
night chris.
And that doesn't give away the ending?
That sucks. Night.
i haven't read it?
i just looked at the pictures.
:D
Has Joe written any other books
Hmmm - not 'racing' but what about a SPC meet at Bletchley Park then (given that they are, based on current agreements that they have with various companies) likely to be a launch venue for aforementioned game(s)?
cooooool!
is it free?
You mean...
:D!!!
I am not sure that he has. He has probably ghost written the odd driver biog but I don't know about any books he has written.
I have read one of Steve Matchett's book and he can be a bit rambling. He's the Speed Commentator here in the states for F1
I love his Chalk Talk sessions :D
sidepodspace
Every time we discuss a shuttle launch someone always asks about the purpose of the mission. For once NASA has its act together and has a nice little feature on the mission to Hubbe.
http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/hubble_servicing/
You mean with Red Bull. He is great on SPEED TV. I did like last years ITV broadcast, is BBC as good?
No, but it's pretty cheap to get in - £10 per person, valid for 12 months, as many visits as you like apart from some special events.
groovy. we should do that.
And its also the home of the National Museum of Computing, complete with a working Colosus...
http://www.tnmoc.org/
forgot the link...
Oh what a nightmare! Lost £20 on a poker night, had to take the graveyard train home and 2 of the world's most boorish yobs have managed to sit next to me :(
You on the train now? If you are, don't let them see what you just posted. ;)
Hehe. I'd wish you good luck Gavin, but it appears that you haven't had any this evening.
Time for bed I think. Night all.
night andy.
Don't worry- they're too drunk to understand English right now :)
I have been busy lately I managed to watch the China race and todays practise.Could you or anyone answer a question who were the ones that had a perfect race with no spins?
kovi, vettel, erm...
that is a tough question!
Sweet Jesus - I forgot I'm on the train that stops at every bloody farmhouse on the way home :(
I'm watching it now. 3 laps to go. Most of them didn't spin.
Those that did: Hamilton, Alonso. Erm.. :-)
But a LOT more ran off course without spinning.
Heavily delayed Chinese GP notes written, now editing..
go you!
I can't believe anyone can still be up at this hour. I feel like death!
*waves*
I just woke up half an hour ago. Very unusual for me to sleep in that late.
Of course, being GMT +10 makes it easy to keep you company
Surely a bit of an over-reaction to losing £20
:D
No surprise that Mr. C is still around. Red Bull truly does give you wings!
Death by chocolate? What a great shop that is. Now I feel like 'Death' too :P
you've only just missed christine too.
we get extra in for back-to-backs.
Wait until I have to tell the missus - she ain't going to be happy :(
I thought you worked in shifts. :-)
Can I slip in a 'Go Lewis!' then?
Good time for a translation error.
doing a podcast together, kinda means we need to be awake at the same time.
if you do it quietly.
Her English is better than mine though :(
Its easy when you've got used to staying up until 1:15 over the Easter holiday (well, I had time off). Then continued it into this week doing my project. The normal Friday late night just gets later...
http://toomuchracing.blogspot.com/2009/04/race-notes-chinese-grand-prix-2009.html
Right, train's less than 5 minutes away. Goodnight all and get some sleep will ya?
Tell her you won in Danish then plead ignorance at a later date.
Too much Red Bull is bad for you..
Your body gets acclimatised to it and you end up relying on it to stay 'up'. Like tea or coffee.
too late for that.
no redbull, no podcasts. we can sleep next week ;)
I listened to the chat in the park earlier, was good.
Still haven't braved the panel yet. Can't used to hearing myself.
but you sounded the best of everybody?
considering the bytes travelled from your house to kathi's house to our house, you sounded like you were right there with us.
or, as legard would have it...
pat from kathi, and kathi from christine.
It's not the sound quality. It's the sound of myself.
nah, you sound fine. it's a weird thing to get used to though, i'll grant ya :)
Propoganda time:

More plugging:
http://toomuchracing.blogspot.com/2009/04/tmr-on-two-podcasts.html
I'm quite annoyed that Blogger broke my links widgets.
doesn't count as plugging if you're blogging about spc. that must come under "sharing the love", or something ;)
what happened?
Oh it was my fault really. I was playing with different templates but didn't realise it didn't carry over the widgets, even if you are only previewing it.
goodnight exchange server.
that is kinda rubbish :(
Well it was strange because when I imported the new template it asked me to confirm losing the widgets. I ignored it and pressed Preview instead of Save/Cancel. Then closed that tab and hit cancel on the template because I didn't want it. Repeat three times. Now most of my widgets were retained because I didn't take the new template, but it lost the links for no reason...
is it a tough one to fix? am assuming it was the "currently reading" section on the sidebar?
Not really. Just a pain. When I'm logged in I get an Edit icon on each widget. Press that and then paste in the URL for each blog I want in it. Can't remember what I had so just going through Reader now..
new podcast published:

Long time listener... first comment.
Was catching up with the Podcasts and swore I heard something about telemetry streaming on the Renault F1 site. Been driving myself crazy trying to find it without success. Was I dreaming or can anyone help me find it?
hullo tjr and welcome.
you did, and we should have put a link in the show notes. the renault homepage is here: http://www.ing-renaultf1.com/
but unless a session is in progress, you won't see the live button. it's race dependent, but this weekend the full url you'll need is:
http://www.ing-renaultf1.com/en/_2009/team/index.php#/race/gp2009/bahrain/home-gp/
please yell if you need more info.
Thanks!
I would try it out in qualifying tomorrow, but I am in the US and Speed TV stretches qualifying out to fill a 90 minute program so Q3 actually goes out about 20 mins after it finishes -- very annoying, as it also precludes watching the timing on formula1.com (although I probably shouldn't complain -- I should be pleased they show it here at all!)
I'll give it a try during the race.
nice one. do let us know what you make of it. it's taken me a bit of effort to really get into it, but yesterday i was hooked.
Morning all. Just working on the FP3 thread. How is everyone?
It's 5.30pm and I've only been out of bed for an hour. I'm awesome.
It's been a long wait today for the action. 6pm start for us Aussies.
That would've been the smart thing to do, hence, why I didn't think of doing it.
Awesome is one word for it ;)
:) That's tennis for you... Things here are good. at work, using resources to find a new work. It's a living.
Probably because you weren't watching tennis until the early hours of the morning?
I laughed at the comment about me being tennis obsessed. If you gave me a page with the top 20 players faces on it, I'd only recognise about 3 of them, I don't have a clue what their rankings are, and I don't ever read tennis news sites. I don't even understand most of the rules of the game so I can't get involved on tennis forums because I don't understand what most of the terms mean. Definitely not obsessed! F1 obsession doesn't leave enough time for any others :D
Post ready and waiting:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/25/live-bahrain-free-practice-3/
I just saw someone else poking fun and thought I'd join in ;) I know what you mean though, I don't consider F1 obsessed but tend to gloss over the details. I'm usually the one in here that asks who people are when they are on tv. i know the names, but not what they do. like that lewis guy i head about last year. i think he must be a good driver. maybe he should replace piquet...or drive two cars at the same time - one leg in each car.
Lewis Purple S1 & S2
And S3!
I am thinking with the 8 minutes until qualy starts on TV here, I should make a cup of tea. In my Panasonic Toyota F1 mug :D
Funny how things got quiet so quickly... :D
Even I am thinking about disappearing! Still have qualy to rewatch though, but I feel the need to perhaps get an early night for once. Big night tomorrow with panelling at 4am!
Agreed. :D Watch quali in bed?
We are all on the floor again from qually!
Off out to enjoy the day now, happy commenting, see ya post race probably
There is a reason theres a 40" tv in my bedroom and only a 14" in the lounge ;)
Right. Good night, then. ;)
Right, time to have another go at the lap time challenge on grid. :)
I shall be watching the race on Dad's 42-inch TV tomorrow :D
I'm partying hard

:D
I want to get a Force India mug to add to my collection because I forgot to get one in Singapore, and they weren't on sale in Melbourne. But Force India want to charge 15 Euro to send it to me, which is twice the price of the mug itself. No sale!

Wow, it really is in the middle of nowhere...
Camel farms tend to be in the middle of nowhere - that's where you find camels! :D
So... everyone's gone? Wow... looks like I'll be calling it a night early...
I'm still here, just not got anything to do :P
I'm still about. Flicked through teh skyHD box and found Hund for Red October to watch. :D
Sean Connery speaking russian with his accent is hilarious. :D
Scott! If it isn't my favorite commenter... :P
Hehe. Where's everyone gone off to, then?
Tom Clancy RULES!! :D
Still here -- waiting for the weights to be posted to see if the Toyotas are really that quick...
I'm guessing out or to sleep.
Over here!!
I'm here too, I totally don't know the meaning of 'early night'
Hmmm... I wonder how long it will take them to. JA reckons the Brawns are still mighty quick...
You better, if you want to do a proper job of co-hosting the panel tomorrow. :D
The Dog for Red October? I love that film :)
I'm not hosting, just panelisting :D
Wet bus ticket. Mr. C. will not be pleased!
WRC news - Sordo is leading Rally Argentina. Will he be the man to break Loeb's run?
*waves*
Ahh! I mixed you up with Jackie... Still, should be loads of fun. :)
Dom! Hello!
my plans for tomorrow are to relisten to all the old panels to pick up some tips :D
:D Hahaha! Alec Baldwin was still a serious guy back then... ;)
Good idea! :)
Hey Kathi... :D
No I meant to bring that in the daily post. Not say hi :(
come on qualy, it still hasn't started here. stupid cricket.
Eh?
FOTA want to ban KERS from 2010?
So all those many millions spent by various companies an teams - including Williams who bought a company - will be wasted.
GENIUS!
i thought it was raining in SA? what happened to that?
is australia competing in the cricket match? oneHD ignored F1 after they found out Webber was just 19th.
the real question is FOTA or Flavio? McLaren are probably quite happy with their system.
They were going to get standardized KERS from 2010 anyway, so the money would've been wasted either way.
they won't be using that system in 2010...
true, I forgot about the standardised carryon.
I get the impression this was a FOTA discussion they didn't really want to be made public... until Flav came along...
There was talk of a standardized system - no-one had actually decided on what system to use.
Thwax Mosley liked the flywheel system - which no-one is running. *sigh*
oh lame, qualy has just started, the commentators say it will be a 'succinct version' and they have started with 7 minutes to go in Q1. Lame.
Will Williams ever run it??
To minimize Webber's pain? :-/
so they don't miss a single second of the interesting Indian cricket.
I thought Williams had a Flywheel and battery hybrid rather than a pure flywheel
Maybe they will if they start to fall behind later in the season?
Is this IPL? I guess there are Aussie players?
IPL in South Africa... how's that for confusing? :D
Why only then? Wouldn't that be... erm... too late? Especially if they won't use it in 2010, anyway?
I assume there is some Aussie players there, I know there are some Kiwi ones. But I'd still rather have my live F1!
What's the ratings like?
The Melbourne Grand Prix was in the top 3 shows of the week, and apparently 1 in 136 people watched the Chinese Grand Prix. Not brilliant, but not as bad as I was expecting considering the official channel line is 'it's a minority sport and will not take priority'
Actually, I just found this:
Yesterday’s Chinese grand prix delivered the Ten network’s new sports channel One its best audience to date.
The race, which saw Aussie driver Mark Webber make a podium finish, was the perfect showcase for One because the similar time zone delivered a late afternoon event.
As a result, One scored 143,000 viewers according to preliminary OzTam ratings - roughly twice its previous best.
meaning 'we won't really care unless mark does well and it won't take priority unless mark starts winning.'
:(
so it is brilliant really, if it was their highest viewing figures ever. You think they'd learn.
Of course - an Aussie did well!
but mark did well then. he's not doing well now, is he? see my interpretation of their policy.
that may have changed the later figures. On the analogue channel that shows the race delayed 146,000 watched. I think people who watched it live wouldn't have known how it was going to end :D
but webber qualified 3rd - he was in a position to do well. he didn't even make it past q1 today...
but they didn't even have qualy on the broadcast schedule today. If he did well last weekend and lots of people watched surely it would make sense to show it this week when Webber-mania is at a high?
Now Listening to: Black and Gold - Sam Sparro
Was it just me, or did anyone else remember the John Player Special Lotus when they heard this song?
Never heard of the song, but the title made me think of the beautiful 72's and 97T
maybe IPL generally does better in the ratings?
It was on the British Charts for a while, surprised you didn't hear it. It's a nice song. :)
That'll be why.
Chart music...
Not your type? Trust me, this isn't your typical pop fodder song...
possibly. Everyone I know who watches F1 here does so online, so that's not gonna help the ratings :D
Yup! :D
Nope. Sordo slips to 3rd on a slow-ish stage as Loeb moves up to 1st and Hirvonen to 2nd. Only 6 seconds separate the top 3, though.
Currently listening to Parallel Worlds by Elliot Minor ;)
But they watch online coz it's not shown live on the telly. Vicious cycle...
Nice to see I'm not alone in spotting the Lotus reference... ;)
I vaguely remember that song...
Meh, just changed to some Simple Minds
"Don't you...forget about meeee, don't don't don't don't!"
Where's Lou, BTW?
The Breakfast Club! :)
I like that song... :D
Yeah, I was gonna ask that yesterday. Very strange.
I'm going to see them in a few months in concert ;)
The evil world known as revising i think
It's like she vanished into nowhere... hope she's OK.
That means the race for most talkative has been blown wide-open.
Missing quali live commenting for revising? Surely not!
You're an old-timer, eh? :P
It is rather strange of her to miss qualifying, if she did at all. As you said, hope nothing's happened.
I get it from my mum ;) She's the reason why I got into Peter Gabriel.
After I saw him in concert at Blickling Hall, I've loved his stuff ever since.
WRC - Latvala is seriously underperforming. How can he in a works Ford end up behind a privateer Citroen that's been outdated by 2 years?! Mind you, it's being driven by Petter Solberg, but still...
Peter Gabriel - there's another great artist!
Genesis was a great band. :D
I. Love. Genesis.
Hi everyone, how we doing? Gutted I missed qualifying. It doesn't seem to be on iPlayer either.
About 40 years too modern. ;)
I love them too. :D Especially "Jesus He Knows Me" and "Turn It On Again"
I'm pretty sure two of the guys in Genesis also formed Mike and the Mechanics.
Welcome to the club, then! :)
Really? So they produced Mike and the Mechanics (a pretty good group), Peter Gabriel, and Phil Collins? Quite an all-star lineup!
heh when people ask me what sort of music I like my answer is "if it came out after I was born I probably hate it"
Until Peter Gabriel left they were. Giving a drummer a mic is always a mistake.
Haha! I'm not that extreme, but I love 80s music - and I was born in the 80s! :D
Don't take my word for that, though. I'll go take a look on Wikipedia and see if that's right. I only say it because one of the members looked like one of the guys from Genesis.
Hey, I like Phil Collins. :D
I exaggerate, I like a lot of 90s stuff, but very very very very little from this decade.
Nothing wrong with Gabriel. Early Genesis is superb.
Can't stand the man personally :P
Yup I was right! Mike Rutherford, the long haired one, set M+TM as a side project. I also know of the lead singer, Paul Carrack.
OK, another 80s band - any Go West fans?
A lot of songs from this decade are utter tosh, but most of the British acts play some great music, especially when you compare it to what most American groups come up with.
I have led many a singalong to The Living Years. Good times.
Epic song.
*raises hand*
Not a real hardcore fan, but I've listened to some of their music and I like it.
Fun fact: I have the entire GTA: Vice City OST (all 6 volumes of it) on my iPod.
You have to look very hard to find good music nowadays. 'Good' being hugely subjective of course.
Very true, there are only two American bands I'm really into at the moment, one of which I discovered 3 days ago.
But then most of the younger folks will think this music is great! Especially if you compare it to what's coming up in a decade or so.
I love Go West, mainly because both Mum and Dad like them. I'm also going to an 80s concert the day after Simple Minds, and Go West are gonna be there! :D
Now got "Over My Shoulder" playing on Spotify :D
I like Kings of Leon - for an American band, they kinda have a British sound to them.
Ooh! Who else are in the lineup?
"YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Your sex is on fiiiire!" :D
I was quite the outsider at high school listening to stuff from the 60s-80s, and not knowing what on earth the stuff on the charts was. It's why I hate nightclubs.
They are pretty good, but not one of my top two!
Marc AlmondABCGo WestKid Creole and The CoconutsBananaramaThe Three DegreesCutting CrewHazel O'ConnorVisageAnd a massive firework finale!
Oops, that came out wrong.
The only concerts I've been to recently are Def Leppard who had Cheap Trick supporting, and Crowded House. :D
Sorry about all the quote boxes.
WOO!
Seen them several times of the last couple of years. Missed them when Hester was alive *: ( * but seing them in Thetford Forest, Birmingham NEC, Wembley Area and the Royal Albert Hall made up for a bit. ;)
ABC - How To Be A Millionaire comes to mind...
Cutting Crew - nice!
:D This decade's music isn't horrible, but it's not memorable...
Just think - the next decade we have to call the '10s. LOL
It's called the teens. That's how it was called last century, anyway. :)
The good stuff (as far as I'm concerned) never goes mainstream unfortunately.
That sounds much more sensible :P
woohoo qualifying was cut short to get back to the cricket, but the cricket hasn't started again, so they're showing surfing highlights.
Done already?! They wouldn't have done that if Webber was up there.
Does anybody else find it really annoying when the current decade is referred to at the 'noughties'?
Also, how odd is it that we are going to live in the 20's?
I want to get a Force India mug to add to my collection because I forgot to get one in Singapore, and they weren’t on sale in Melbourne. But Force India want to charge 15 Euro to send it to me, which is twice the price of the mug itself. {Comment #137}
They do mugs? That's new!
But yes, if it's anything like last year, the delivery pricing could be a bit strange if the delivery is from Holland like last year. I ordered a load of lanyards and the delivery was about the same as the cost of two lanyards - considering it was to cross a bit of water and a couple of hundred miles of land, it took some getting used to. The delivery is quick, though.
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG HUUUUUUUUG! :D
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/127020
I found another site that still charged 15 Euro, but they also had other teams, so I got a Renault and Ferrari one as well. Only teams missing now are Brawn, McLaren, RBR and Torro Rosso, all of whom don't have mugs for sale.
Nelson: "I'm doomed..."
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/127039
Haha! It's very weird, Chris, but I'm trying not to imagine it too much. ;)
i can't wait for the depression of the 30's.
I like it that Rubens sees every new day that he's still in F1 as a great blessing. :)
Circumspect, to say the least.
no need to wait for it - we're having one now...
by the way, there is tennis on and I'm not watching it:D
:O !
exactly!
how did we get onto talking about music. a dangerous conversations starter for me, if ever there was one.
Just got back from a 2 hour bike ride in the hills. on the way - mostly uphill but i didn't realise that much until you're looking down over the city and the reverse trip is so easy, and a little fast :)
Does turning your head to type a message at the computer count as not watching it? ;)
It's not that we don't believe you but you have a stereotype to live up to.
Just hope you had good brakes. ;)
:D :D
:D
I won't even be watching the final tomorrow night because it will be in my precious pre-panel sleep time. I can tell you now though, Nadal will win :D
Speaking of the panel, isn't Lou supposed to be hosting?
DUH! :D
Jackie and Lou will co-host -it's ladies night!
When did they start handing out 3 place grid penalties? {Comment #39}
Nick Heidfeld got one last year at Singapore for something similar, if I remember correctly. It seemed strange then, though I suppose telling Adrian to start 21st would have seemed pretty strange now. Still, Le Seb could feel somewhat short-changed by this - even as a Force India supporter, I see no reason why the 3-place penalty was used rather than the 5-place version.
It's the first time I've tested them that much. they did well. i just had to remember which blind corner went into a steep hairpin. fun stuff :)
Kamui Kobayashi completes a good day to be a Toyota driver
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74823
Yep, for blocking Barrichello.
half price drinks?
That's if Lou turns up before then...
we can discuss the aesthetic qualities of the drivers ;)
for the ladies, sure. ;)
I'm confident she'll be here before then. :)
i think amy's comment got cut off. i'm sure she meant to say the drivers' girlfriends/wifes ?
i can’t wait for the depression of the 30’s. {Comment #247}
The depression of the zeroties is bad enough...
Where is the fun in that?
Noughties, you mean.
that's for us guys to talk about... ;)
i have opinions on those too ;) girls judge other girls don't you know :D
No, zeroties is far better.
but all we ever see now are the driver's dads.
:)
Heck, over here, it's called, 2000s - "two-thousands"...
meow! and what do you have to say about them? ;)
Oh dear... MotoGP isn't having a good time of it.
Qualifying cancelled due to heavy rain. They're using the fastest times set in practice to decide the grid.
As much as I'm not enjoying weather messing with my F1, at least nothing has been cancelled yet. Not a good time to be a MotoGP fan.
i think in Israel it's 5769 or 5770 so we should just ask someone else.
Yep. Sound familiar? They had the same problem at Qatar!
But looking at the practice times, I don't think we'd have seen a different result even if we ran a proper quali session...
I don't miss seeing Cora on my TV, I was shocked to find out Webber's partner was 30 when she hooked up with him because he was a teenager, and I like that Heikki's girlfriend is a normal English girl, compared to his team mates pop-trash :)
And they only have 18 bikes on the grid. And only Rossi, Stoner, and Lorenzo are really competitive out front.
F1 is looking very healthy if you compare it to other motorsport. It's been going from strength to strength. And with the racing having been unbelievably good, it's never looked better in a looong time.
Cora - isn't she like a softcore pron star? Not sure about that... I don't wanna judge Lewis' relationship with THAT woman, but I thought she'd be here this weekend?? Watcha think of Jenson's girl/fiancee?
Mr C says lou warned us she wouldn't be around for quali, although he can't remember why. And Friday was just school.
I like Heikki's too. She's a nice average girl
average sounds so negative. :) but she sure hasn't been blinded by them bright lights...
She did? I guess I was asleep when that happened...
I was glad not to see her on my TV this weekend or last. Nothing against her personally, because she doesn't control what is broadcast. I wonder if THAT woman talks pop with Alonso's wife ;)
Steve Matchett has his Bahrain Chalk Talk on SpeedTV.com now. It's all about Adrian Newey. :)
Nah - I don't think THAT woman cares for 'local' musicians. Besides, I think Alonso's wife just focuses on the music, not on the flirty dancing...
If you want to watch it:
http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-bahrain-gp-chalk-talk/
;)
Newey? Interesting...
I don't think its negative, she's like a good normal person. Not a singer/model/other famous role
I actually have some of her music, I'm (very slowly) learning Spanish so have far too much Spanish music for my own good, and her pronounciation is actually very easy to understand :D
Doesn't her father run one of the teams Heikki raced for in a junior formulae?
weights are out
http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/bhn09_weights.pdf
loving this comment on the newey vid:
Jarno is heavier than Glock. Bad Timo.
couldn't they sort them out by weight and time for us? that's hard...
Vettel heavier than I thought. Super lap from him then.
yeah and glock was the lightest.
I prefer them in grid order, much easier. I like to wait for someone like JA to do their analysis, rather than put any effort into it myself :)
Jarno's pole was legit. He's only 1 lap lighter than Rubens and 2-3 laps lighter than Jenson.
the two BMW are the heaviest.
And Lewis is carrying the same amount of fuel as Jenson.
Uh-oh.
Heavier than the Toyotas and Brawns, bodes well for the race for him.
Of the frontrunners, Vettel is the heaviest - and by some margin too. Does that make him the favorite for tomorrow?
I only commented this, so someone else might get motivated. I'm too busy trying to figure out on Google Earth where I was during the last 2 hours. all the apple orchard and vineyards look the same...
Right... back to Chalk Talk. BRB.
what's the diff between a declared weight and a weight? does this mean the team does not have to have all cars weighed and they do it themselves and then get fined if the FIA check and it's not correct?
That's my guess since thats all the cars 11-20, weighing is probably more important for the top 10 since they can't touch their fuel.
makes sense. i could check the regs but i just can't be bothered. i did have plans on the off season to actually read all the regs, but that went out the window when i realised i wasn't as nerdy as i thought i was...
As I've said a few times over this weekend - Williams are running Red Bull-style rear wing endplates on the car now. I've spotted them a couple of times on Nico's car when the cameras have picked him up.
you can always ask alia... ;)
I don’t wanna judge Lewis’ relationship with THAT woman, but I thought she’d be here this weekend?? {Comment #284}
The Pussycat Dolls are on tour - they're supposed to be performing in Las Vegas with Britney Spears tonight. This makes being at Bahrain simultaneously difficult.
She could probably make the Spanish Grand Prix because it's between tour legs, but Turkey and Monaco are in doubt because the Pussycat Dolls are performing with Lady Gaga in the Antipodes.
THAT woman has an independent professional career and that is why we don't see her at every race (or anything close to every race).
Just noticed that it's signed by a 'J. Bauer'. I doubt the teams will lie about their weights with him around!
Within two hours of the end of qualifying practice session the race start weight of all cars eliminated in Q1 and Q2 must be declared by the relevant teams to the technical delegate.
In order to ensure that the weight of the cars eliminated in Q1 and Q2 are as declared the FIA reserves the right to weigh the cars at random during the one hour period commencing one hour and 30 minutes before the start of the formation lap. When a car is weighed in this way its weight must be within 3kg of its declared weight
SCARY BRAWN DIFFUSER FACE!
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=123360&catID=1103-3704
But she said she'd take a break from the tour to be with Lewis at Bahrain. Which is why I'm looking for her...
Johnny 5 is alive!
:) the FIA has a biography section on 2 stewards but not this one!
reminds me of the Alien character...that double mouth thing.
yeah i'm sure that's why you're looking for her ;)
i guess you went looking huh?! Thanks :)
Excellent stuff that!
Timo usually does well in the race - scored points twice this year while starting from the pitlane!
she may be part-filipina, but she's not my type. i'd pick jessica over her any day of the year. :P
thankfully it was the first result when I searched the pdf for 'weight'
what’s the diff between a declared weight and a weight? {Comment #311}
Declared weight - the team tells the FIA what weight their car is with fuel.
Weight - measured by the FIA.
It's easy to check the real weight of the top 10 cars because they already had the fuel in as they reached parc fermé state. This is not necessarily the case with those in 11-20. In order to save time and effort for its staff, the FIA allows teams with cars in 11-20 positions to say what weight their cars are.
The FIA is entitled to weigh any cars it wishes at random in the 90 minutes preceding the pit lane opening in readiness for the race and any discrepancy will lead to that team being forced to start from the pits (as per any other technical discrepancy). As a rule, the FIA will weigh at least two cars in the 11-20 positions in the timeslot allotted for that purpose.
Much appreciated :) i'm moving documents from one hard drive to the other at the moment and i have no idea where anything is. And given i have to clean off the work computer in the next months, it's only going to get worse...
Alia, you and Amy are quite a tandem! :)
But she said she’d take a break from the tour to be with Lewis at Bahrain. Which is why I’m looking for her… {Comment #318}
Presumably she'd have to fly after the concert tonight, then.
Williams' new rear wing end plates

That's a veeeeeeeeeery looooooooong flight...
the FIA has a biography section on 2 stewards but not this one! {Comment #319}
That's because Jo Bauer isn't a steward; he's the chief scrutineer. A subtle difference in terminology which means that the FIA doesn't have to give a biography for him.
But she reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally needs to be seen with Lewis, apparently.
:D Button v Hamilton wouldn't be complete without Jessica v THAT woman. :P
rumours are she has quit the band, so now she will have time to make her 'solo career' fit around his schedule ;)
When I was in the pizza shop that song came on the TV - God it's awful! It's not even musical in any way!!!
Or is it because he's a government agent who doesn't officially exist?
Just to point out, Journeyer is so close to taking Gavin's 4th place in the Top 5 commenters. ;)
they are touring here, and the tickets are something like $180. I know people who are excited. It pains me to call them friends.
which song are you talking about? she hasn't quit the band - she just alternates her solo work with her group work. that said, the way the band was credited for their work for 'jai ho' might've peeved them off a bit.
My maths worked. :D
VERY close, as in 18-comments close. I hope I move past after today.
:D
Hehehe.
And Scott's spreadsheet may have been onto something. Good job, guys!
That's what a week's holiday and a busy week will do to ya!
Sorry? $180??? SERIOUSLY???
Well done - Gold Star for you!
I'll be gone from May 1-3; that'll be your chance to take it back. ;)
Aussie dollars, right? Can you convert to pounds?
How do I do a Schumi block to stop you overtaking me? ;)
http://uk.news.launch.yahoo.com/dyna/article.html?a=/090424/340/ikckh.html&e=l_news_dm
I am just reporting the probably made up news!
By commenting non-stop for 6 hours while I'm asleep. ;)
Ask Sutil?
:D
The one that sounds like a screeching cat being pumped through a cement mixer while some ladies do their best impressions of being a slapper whilst trying to get run over by traffic?
These don't look like Digest Summaries. Damn. My plan to be able to find them has failed if there will be general chat as well.
Oops. Look like we forgot in the heat of conversation...
Let me check ticketek...$140, I'm exaggerating again obviously. But still, that's more than I've paid for a show in a long time.
$140 is like, 70 pound
:D Give me a few minutes to put one together...
That's okay, there's no rush. I'm just pondering whether the idea of putting them in here is going to work.
I didn't realise that conversation went on in the results thread as well. Will put thinking cap back on.
Hey Chris, could you recommend a few Mute Math songs? Your comment about them being like an American version of Muse is intriguing me.
I go away for a few hours...
With the doohickey, it can spill over anywhere. ;)
Just when I thought I was getting good at checking which post I'm in on the doohickey :(
Typical and Chaos are probably good places to start. The video for Typical is amazing too.
....and it usually does ;)
Liar. Go before the stewards and say sorry!
Yep oops, I did that with my last comment, sorry. While it's not hard to put a comment in the right place, it's not hard to put it in the WRONG place either.
Yea. I'm thinking it needs to be somewhere else. Maybe email or wiki.
Are you still planning on making the daily post a different colour?
I'll just fire a longstanding NZ member of my staff. Perhaps my mother.
I'm not sure. Mr C thought about it for a bit, and I don't think it would work the way we want it to. Can't remember what he said about it though.
Is it too much work to just try it for a bit?
Chaos sounds alright, Chris. Singer's voice doesn't sound too different to anyone I've heard. Sounds a bit like Jack Johnson.
I'll talk to him again. It's not really my area :)
Funny you should mention Jack Johnson. The video to Typical is similar to the reverse footage one he did, but a million times better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAtXKS9ZxvM
I'm a fan of Newton Faulkner, who's been quoted as a British Jack Johnson
Wow, watched some of their Letterman performance and one of them had a keytar, nice. Watching the Typical video now, cool. I like the music, but the singing is a bit too.......soft for me I think. I like artists like Jack Johnson so I dunno for definite, but I think I expected a heavier, abrasive voice.
There's mine. ;)
Think we were in the wrong thread there, oops.
LOOK! LOOK! LOOK!
Keytar - is that the same instument as the lead guy in Pendulum uses?
He was better before he got well known. mainly because he still used his middle name, Newton Battenberg Faulkner. And that isn't even his full name, his first name is actually Sam.
Dunno. It looks like a guitar, but it has piano keys instead of strings. That description sounds rightish.
Sam Newton Battenberg Faulkner?
See, Typical is already in my head. Keep up the good work Chris. :P
They do have their heavier moments but I know what you mean. Their new video is awesome too, will find a link.....
Yup. I don't think it went down too well with the record company he signed with though.
Looking at the overall Super Season Grid, having just entered the current average lap times onto the main page, Rosberg is now on "Average Pole" just a few hundredths ahead of Button.
It tends to have that effect :D
Here's their new video. It's absolutely genius.
http://www.myspace.com/mutemath
What happens when you take FP times out? Who is the best qualifyer and who is the best racer?
Shifting convo
I've not really tried that. I might do it sometime tomorrow since I CBA to do it now. :P
Ah sod it, I'll do it now. Not like I'm gonna save it, just delete the appropriate times and just undo.
No need to delete it - just make a new column or something?
Nah it's OK. I can just undo what I've deleted.
Rosberg is on "qualifying average pole" just 4 thousandths ahead of Button.
Fastest driver in the race on average is Button by about 3 tenths from Rosberg.
Right, I'm off to do a few laps around the Nordschleife, just downloaded it for rFactor. Speak later all.
Cheers. What's letting Rosberg down? Bad luck, bad driving or bad strategy?
Cool! GL!
A bit of bad luck, but mostly bad strategy.
I'm not sure that will encourage him tbh :P
holy s***, what a freaking mess...
am taking drastic action guys, i've just woken up to commenting hell and that is very bad. it'll take hours to fix this mess, so we're officially taking sidepodcast realtime down until we have time to fix this problem.
we recently had a bit of a heated discusion in the comments as to the merits of pulling it v.s keeping it and i'm aware that you may all hate me for this, however we're creating waaaay to much work for ourselves. so drastic action it'll be.
single-threaded lclt shall remain for any live commenting needs.
sorry.
All right. Apologies for that.
Yeah, sorry about all this :(
You guys are so busted ;)
I don't know about anyone else, but I quite like it over here.
You sound a lot like Candace from Phineas and Ferb. But I digress.
We're not just to blame for it, though. To be fair, everyone who's commented since this thread was open played their part in this shenanigan, as harsh as that may sound.
tis my fault, it was due to be fixed this week but i was sick. the plan for next week is to do nothing but sort it all out. in the meantime i gotta move some comments.
am moving over to the daily thread now...
Agreed.
Most sensible idea I've heard all day.
:D
Makes me think - why DID we have doohickey in the first place? Wasn't it because we had trouble keeping track of multiple ongoing conversations? We've kinda swung onto the other extreme now...
it's our fault for creating doohickey. we take all blame.
It feels like home
Looks like everyone got a bit too carried away in the results thread.
We created the doohickey because we had at least three tabs of LCLT open, and getting that all in one place seemed like a good way to solve the problem.
Unfortunately it's created more work than it saved, so it's back to the lovely LCLT for now.
But you haven't spent much time commenting on LCLT... have you?
Yep, looks like it. That's one issue with doohickey - it's hard to keep track which thread you're on.
Your own creation became a monster in its own right.
no, but I do like the daily thread! I'm just more a fan of new comments at the top as opposed to new comments at the bottom. But I can overcome this :) Less work for Mr C is a good thing.
Doohickey is kind of a flawed solution. The best way to solve the original problem we had is if we have multiple (let's say 3) columns representing 3 different posts. Each column would be an LCLT unto itself.
That way, you know which thread you're on and what conversation you're in, while still managing to track everything.
it's impossible.
the other issue is that with wordpress in order to find out which category a comment is in (which will be necessary to do the daily colouring idea), we have to traverse four tables. a four table lookup per comment, is a performance killer.
we might just have to make lclt better instead.
Sorry 'me'!
tweetdeck sort of works like that too. hell of a rework too.
i suggest you focus on that and keep lclt as it is. it's working fine enough for our current needs. better to focus on a long-term fix.
So anyway, I was going to suggest that Christine and Mr.C are free to use any data I've collected on averages as they wish. I don't mind at all since I enjoy working them out anyway. It's your call on that one at the end of the day, but I won't be offended if you say no.
Was just about to post something like that when Mr C commented about the comments mess, so I decided to leave it for a moment until everything calmed down.
Sorry what's happening here? Should we not be commenting in the FP3 thread?
Seems like the most sensible option.
:)
cheers sir.
my only problem with lclt is its very long so i'm always scrolling up and down the page. If I wanted to watch video at the top at the same time as I'm commenting, I can't do it without closing the comment stream.
Back to the F5 days for me. :)
does the resize handle (silver bar at bottom of comment pane), not enable you to get it all on screen at the same time?
not a fan of lclt?
Hey again.
Sooo, we giving some lclt some love again?
Frankensidepod?
it's going to take a bit of discipline on our end to move threads at the appropriate time. we have a tendency to stick to one thread until the conversation dies completely. doohickey solved that, but now that we're back to LCLT, we need to remember to move back to the daily thread after a race or a liveshow.
you can reduce the length of the comments stream so that everything fits onto the screen.
only if i resize it to show one comment at a time which i cant keep up with, the speed posts come these days :)
During a race, it can limit you to how many comments you can see at once.
I'm a F5 guy on weekdays anyway. Stuck with IE6 at work.
Sort of. Mr C just had to take down the Doohickey because of the mess of comments we'd all caused.
we (hearts) lclt.
I guess right now you can start saying "I told you so." :)
Yes we dooooooo! :)
got ya. will have a think...
Well, I suppose I can ;)
You poor thing :)
My computer isn't. Too many comments and it slows down firefox.
Actually, there's not that many comments yet so lclt should be ok...
where did that come from. odd.
I do remember you had on your list to make comments appear in real-time since it was becoming annoying with all of them appearing in chunks every 20 seconds.
Sometimes it doesn't work - it stays 'clicked'...
it is a plan. it's a plan with a month or two's lead time though.
Ah, well, nothing you can do about it. ;)
I encounter that problem with the 'post comment' button sometimes...
i like the 4 panel page as shown on the live commenting: reloaded page, but I'm guessing it was scrapped for a reason back when I was a podcast listener but not a blog reader.
Me too. I've had that a number of times in the past. Not so much now though.
which page?
On Google Chrome the lclt doesn't update until you post, either.
How about a read only doohicky? Can't have more windows open than I already have to track more threads.
Don't mind lclt, but tracking all the threads is a pain in the bot
that could be an issue.
Except it's working now. Two doohickeys open (FF & GC) and they show the same posts...
ahh yeah. just ran out of time. as always.
Isn't that the LCLT's first iteration? Or is that something completely different?
yep I'm using Chrome and LCLT's updating fine
my guess is the first?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/07/26/live-commenting-reloaded/
I vagualy remember that, I think I dismissed it cos i didnt like it ;)
OMG and Jeremy and Scott - completely forgot it's ANZAC Day today!
Doesn't look like I can post at all from lclt...
just kicks them into moderation. :(
*waves*
hi guys. Hope you're all ok... :) guess i should read up on why the doohickey is gone...
Phew. Stupid work.
That was the first version, yes.
ANZAC?
Hi Lukeh. :)
yep. it wasn't pretty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Day
Anzac day is over!
Australia and New Zealand... something something. :D
Heya Lukeh
Warning : Includes swearing ;)
It's Rememberance Day for AUS and NZ...
Ahh right, just found it on Wikipedia.
Lou will probably wonder what on earth happened while she was out...
They don't do poppies for ANZAC day in Australia, I was looking for one and everyone looked at me like I was weird, they do poppies on actual Rememberance day.
All my comments go into moderation...
All of them.. from anywhere...
Im wondering this now tbh.
so. just to check. we've got digest submissions from:
- bassano
- journeyer
- scott
do we lose any?
That worked - different email address.
*sigh*
Waves!
The comments in the wrong post thing got worse, basically.
I'll do mine now. In the other place thingy, the results one, yeah?
Just out of interest, where can I find this discussion?
I GIVE UP!
Please.
We can see you? What's up?
Erm, why do some of them appear and others don't?
gavin, can't seem to see yours. i check.
It could be down to the way LCLT processes comments vs how doohickey does it...
dang... what a shame...
my poor DD addiction! :P
Not all of them.
Had to change what email address I entered to get it to work.
There's half a dozen comments in moderation from the email address I've been using here since the beginning.
Can't even post using it from the thread instead of the lclt...
does it not redirect to lclt?
Does for me.
If we could get back to some F1 news, if possible:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74836
Looks like Branson's finally ready to take his backing to the next step :D
not on the DD no, it does say it though, but not automatically like in a browser.
Lets try my first comment again.
How about a read only realtime doohicky and then use lclt to post?
Too many threads to keep track of whats going on just in lclt.
I've put the digest review up Mrs C
That can work as a short-term solution.
Thank you :)
I don't even use the Doohickey for posting anyway. I do all that here in the LCLT.
and have found gavin's. cheers.
could do. probs not today though.
In the daily thread - But you've just proved your point to me that it's very difficult to find stuff over multiple threads. Perhaps this sort of thing should be 'submitted' rather than 'posted'?
Anyway, gonna dash off for a bit - going out for dinner :)
LCLT takes too long to load for me. Doohickey does everything faster, which is why I prefer it. I even use doohickey for live session commenting - I put my video stream in a separate window instead.
<a href="http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/25/live-bahrain-qualifying/#comment-275649">found this</a>
Yes, that's because we were focusing on improving the doohickey. Now we will switch allegiances, and the LCLT will get some love.
I've never really had an issue with that kind of thing at all. I just comment and go.
It's because it loads all the comments.
Doohicky only loads the last 10 or 20 when you open it.
Yay! :D
We love you LCLT :)
cheers kathi
It's okay for daily posts, but it starts lagging when there's too much activity.
we know ;)
If you're writing a comment, lclt appears to stop updating...
Thanks Kathi.
I told you so... ;)
but when you run it, doohickey and LCLT work the same way anyway by continuously adding comments, so that shouldn't be the one causing the lag.
:D
i don't think it really does, though...
I love you all too :)
Hey, I've never favoured one or the other. Just because I've used both doesn't mean I have a favourite. But to be honest I only started using the Doohickey for tracking comments about a couple of weeks ago.
:D !!!
Hehehe.
Does for me
Have to hit f5 and then reselect the thread to see anything thats been added.
that's odd. it shouldn't work that way...
Have been reading up on the whole discussion... haven't really used the LCLT as a proper commenting source since i've gotten into spc. I feel a bit sad as well the doohickey has caused this problem and i never like agruments... I just find it a shame I suppose :(
Then again I'm feeling sad in general but that's because of work :P
I'm just like a 2009 car - I may not look the best, but I do work as they wanted me to, you know ;)
ok, my lclt is broken. Stuck at comment #548 and then I come here and see there is 21 more since then :)
:D
There's no argument at all. We tried the solution and it didn't work, so now we put our thinking caps on. No blame, no falling out, we love you all.
Mr C will be hugging everyone again in no time.
Argument wasnt the right word I know, my mind is frazzled at the mo, my bad :)
Why would we want to hug him at the risk of getting his man-flu?
;)
I thought you had cornettos?
Its worth the risk
Mr C did use the a-word, but nothing personal, for sure.
Maybe that's the problem - he doesn't have Magnums like Kimi?
He also used the S-word, but at least he covered it up ;)
couldn't blame him, really.
I didn't know Schumacher had became a swear word, I know Mr C hated him and that, but...
:D
R.G - isn't there supposed to be FSR qualifying tonight from China?
FSR? What that?
Formula Sim Racing - it's awesome :D
Oooh - Pitpass is down... :O
...And? I thought we hated that place now.
F1Wolf has a question: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/25/bahrain-fp3-and-qualifying-times/#comment-276211
No idea. Couldn't care less about that at the minute though :D (football related)
We do, Journeyer, why were you checking?
Too many connections - knackered server or possibly DOS
Is he admitting it's not a hangover now?
Yay! ;)
I'll go double check. I'm pretty sure it's tonight.
im still in awe at such a huge change of events :P
They're not evil. ;) Besides, they have the occasional good article. I don't go there everyday, but semi-regularly.
and my lclt is working again! For a second there I thought I might have to like, sleep or something.
Heheheee
God forbid!
At 3:15 AM? Nah! :P
Sleep? Huh. Whats that
Your the Man U fan yeah?
Gone back to thread and f5ing...
Seems to work.
Indeed, i should be watching the spurs match but i can't be bothered. probably losing anyways.
Please let Bassano miss that grammatical mistake
Yup, 2-0. Unbelievably happy.
Well there's certainly something going on on the FSR server. Practice is taking place according to the Racecast.
I'll let it slide this once
Oh my goodness... What on earth is going on?!
Heh... strange but i'm genuinely not surprised you're winning.
http://www.prosimracing.com/racecast/
If you want to follow.
Phew.
Apparantly, we are playing 'well'
this isn't over yet by any stretch, is it?
they kicked off at half 5 so another half I'm assuming to go.
Shhh, I'm to happy at the minute
Heheh :D
Right, back on f1, now to watch quali... only know about the front row and nothing else :)
Is there not a football thread?
For the love of Timo... :D
Thats a good idea, might go and watch the preview.
I found that live commenting Qualy I couldn't pay too much attention to the action
Non-multi tasking man I guess
Did it just get all quiet again?
Kendal mint cake. ;)
OK - why is my timestamp screwed up compared to yours? DST not adjusted yet?
Yup
No idea.
What's that?
Amy, I'm surprised you can study well at 3:30... Night person much?
Can't sleep, huh?
That was in answer to Jouneyer
Forgotten how to use lclt now! :D
It's mint cake, from Kendal
not tired in the slightest. I think its genetic, my mother is often ironing at 4 in the morning because she can't sleep :D
It's not THAT different from doohickey...
A cake that is loaded with sugar. Comedian Jack Dee made a joke about it in his standup something along the lines of "Eat some and slip into a diabetic coma."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendal_Mint_Cake
I was watching that last night too
It's like using vinyl again after getting used to an iPod ;)
Was it on Paramount or Dave or something? I only thought of it as something to break the silence :D
Dave, I think
BTW, I love the fact that Dave have called their +1 channel "Dave Ja Vu"
:D
:(
Am still waitlisted for my Montreal trip
And there's loads of seats
*tumbleweed*
ca-caw! ca-caw!
hoot! hoot!
:D
Journeyer, do you have many Geckos out there?
I love the fact they say
Ge-cko!
Hahaha! Completely random question.
It's like Pokemon! :D
Not so much, animal noises a few posts ago
:D Hahaha! No, there aren't any here. I love that cartoon expression, though. ;)
I love Geckos
Loads in Thailand
There is a Pokemon called Hoot-Hoot though :D
can anyone get the video from this http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8017471.stm and drop.io it? you know me and my Heikki and my hatred for geolocking ;)
Loads in Thailand, Cambodia, et al
They didn't cross the water obviously
I used to have a friend who owned a gecko. I hated the fact she called it Gizmo which seemed such an obvious name.
I'm not at home but Download Helper or UnPlug for Firefox might help for anyone in the UK
Gizmo the Gecko - HAHA!
She's in Australia...
Sounds like a mascot. :D
That's why I said in the UK, I'd do it but am using a friends 'puter
only Gremlins should be called Gizmo. Fact.
:D Only Scott is available now, i think...
Amy, as a warning, that clip contains Legard :D
Not on YouTube yet, just checked
I know, but I'd be willing to put up with him. I also realise it won't be anything I haven't seen/heard before. But it's Heikki!
But I don't know how to take clips off the internet like that.
Are you using Firefox?
Yup
There's abn add-on called unplug, very useful ;)
is RG still around?
I imagine he's a bit angry or annoyed right now...
Hi everyone.
Just to add, I'm listening to football here, I'm about two seconds away from actually killing someone. No joke, I really wanna kill the ref.
Talking to Herman Munster in Finland, there's some Skidoo footage!
right on cue.
That'd be a yes then
Penalty was a joke in all fairness...
It seems unfair he gets to talk to Heikki a lot, and I only got to once ever.
3 goals in 12 minutes? yep - it wasn't over all right. rafa must be disgusted.
A joke. Yup. Cost us a win
Make it 4. That ref mistake has put all the momentum in Man U's favour
Look, this photo predicts the future.
From the Beeb live text:
1852: Just to add, Gomes was booked and not sent-off after conceding a penalty. By the letter of the law he probably should have been.
Paul Scholes on for Darren Fletcher.
1850: I have just seen another replay of the penalty decision. Can I change my mind? I'm not sure Gomes got any of the ball.
Do you think they're laughing about Piquet?
Thats not what I saw.
Hehe
it definitely wasnt a penalty. However, the rest of utd's goals have been perfectly fine and good goals, even if there was a lapse in marking possibly at times. That said, the penalty now doubt gave Utd so much confidence on the ball. Controversy, as ever :P
I think it quite likely. I'm not sure I've ever seen a photo of Piquet and Alsono together apart from Renault events, perhaps this is my selective memory. Although they do always arrive at the Melbourne paddock exactly 5 minutes apart, and surely they've come from the same hotel and are going to the same meetings.
And then, he spins...
Unplug can't find the video on the BBC page?
It's quite old now, BBC probably has better encryption
FF3 has Download Helper
I am concerned about Romains orange colour. He makes Alonso look positively pale.
Amy, will try to grab it later tonight so you should have it before the race
Maybe it's because Alonso is pale? Naturally so.
Today's Big Pic: http://www.f1bigpicture.com
Aww :)
Over a year go or even last year kinda, I would've simply dismissed them as 'Bah, toyota!' but that's a lovely picture. Very very pleased for Jarno too at the moment.
thank you!
And it's done. Man U with a champion's drive, coming back to win.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe-eE6uHrtA&feature=related
A video from Motors TV of a part of Renault's Dubai Roadshow. It even shows the new Megane Trophy car :D
See what I mean when it's a Megane overdosed on steroids? :D
Comment in moderation.
Right, I'm going off to Manchester to find that ref, if he doesn't turn up for the next match, i'll know.
He'll probably referee a match somewhere else...
Darn, missed the Graham hill thing on BBC4.
Got it.
Ooh what's happened to the doohickey? I keep getting re-directed to the Lclt thing and I'm not happy :(
Just downloading an MP3 of the 5live qualifying commentary to see how the other half living...
Doohickey has been taken down for now. We got in a mess with the comments and it was creating a lot of work. Apologies to all but the LCLT is the new King for live commenting.
Drama on the high seas, remember Mr C getting annoyed over conversations going over two threads? Well that happend again, big time. so he took it off line or something and we have to use LCLT for the time being
Think i'll come back later then .. sorry I really dislike lclt
why don't you like it, jackie?
TBH, I'm not sure when or if doohickey will make a comeback. But I do understand where you're coming from.
Ah, sorry Jackie. It might be a while. There will be some LCLT updates coming as soon as we can do them. The Doohickey just wasn't working as a commenting solution.
Mostly because the text is too small and its more difficult to scroll back
Can you not just enlarge the browser page? The scroll thing we are looking into.
Dont know .. not tried that, let me see
Is it possible to put the doohickey back up but restrict it to only the daily thread?
Unfortunately not. To narrow down where each comment comes from is a four-table lookup or something. Basically filtering out content takes up too much processing power, and the more we use, the more it costs.
Yes, enlarging the brower size does work, but the downside is that I can only see the last 3 comments
Do you use doohickey rather than LCLT for race live commenting, Kathi?
Understood.
I'm sorry I didn't realise that the doohickey was making it more costly for you. I'll stop moaning now
It isn't yet, but all the fixes we can think of would make it so.
The problem is time, because we are spending way too long moving comments back to the correct thread. When we're busy doing admin, we can't be doing the creative stuff.
LCLT. (I wasn't asking for me)
What if you disable comments on some of the posts you publish? That way, people can limit their commenting on one thread. Two at most.
I'm not sure it would work with LCLT, but it's a feasible idea for the doohickey.
i'm trying not to comment, cause i'm busy writing new stuff. but if you're going to start asking techie questions... :)
wordpress is basically a rubbish content management system and the database overhead of figuring out which category a comment belongs to is rather large. first you need to know which post it's associated with which is easy, but then which categories (note plural) the post is in.
that's a many-to-many query against a poorly designed schema and it's too heavy to do for the amount of comments we get.
therefore we cannot say "this comment is in response today's daily post". therefore we can't make daily comments a different colour.
it's not expensive price-wise, it's expensive time-wise. sorry, didn't really explain that very well to christine.
So what have we learned kids? Don't ask me stuff. :)
What has Jackie learned? .. Don't moan!
you are correct in that mediatemple impose a processor usage limit and if we go over that limit in any 30 day period we pay an overage charge, however, that's down to our poor (and limited) choice of hosting company.
I've given up using the lclt - causing me more hassle than I really want.
Sticking with the pages and f5.
I'm quite enjoying it, a change is a good as a holiday they say.
amy, still up at 5 AM?
-journeyer, still up at 3 AM
it's always worth asking.
you may not have been part of the doohickey conversation we had a few weeks ago. but i said back then i wanted to pull it because of the admin overhead it was causing us. the response i got back was - "we'll all try harder to look at which post we're commenting on".
christine pointed out a wrong thread issue earlier today and instead the response she got back was basically - "it's all doohickey's fault".
that's entirely correct it really is/was. therefore we've pulled doohickey until a better solution can be implemented.
:)
If di Grassi makes F1, let's hope he doesn't have any incidents like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYW-cw_is-U&feature=related
Quite scary, that one.
I am inventing ways to stop my headset falling off, it is one of those behind the head ones and its not adjustible. My head is small.
The things you do at 5am...
I was .. and I had been trying to be good.
I feel really bad at having a moan after all you do for us. I'll just have to get used to it.
Use some sort of padding, maybe?
At the momet I have tied my hair up around it, and then put a hat on to keep my hair in place. I forsee bobby pins in my future.
Do you look like Kimi and his giant hat?
i admire that dedication... picture?
I wish, its a bright orange Lewis vodafone hat. I can never wear this in public, in protest that its not a Heikki hat.
Do you reckon they'll make them available soon, so we can all make our heads look as small as his?
:D
Gah, why does the Brits have to be not so good in the Speedway?
I care not for Speedway.
Yeah but doesn't vinyl sound better?
Does anyone know the music used in the BBC's clips where Martin explains things like oversteer, understeer and about tyres? It might just be a BBC composed thing, hope it isn't.
Nope, the gadget show showed that MP3's are alot better quality
Ooh good question, I was wondering that today.
Nah, vinyl ages, so the quality deteriorates. You don't have that issue with MP3s.
You don't know what your missing
Didn't someone mention it was a Prodigy song? Not sure on that count, though...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/img00001-jpg
I've had this computer 3 years and I've never used the webcam. Turns out its rubbish.
Ovals? I think we do ;)
Its dirtier. And waaay more exciting
hehe. that is an orange hat :)
even if i hadn't turned the light on, you'd still be able to see it
:D
Does LCLT work on an iPhone?
Ok, let me get this straight; Ovals + Bikes = Speedway
Certain things i really don't like....Ovals and Dirtbikes
sorta. you need two fingers to scroll.
Your not going to lose a friend in a busy shopping area either
Your opinion, I respect. I think your wrong, but I respect.
ooh handy. I always lose peoples in crowds, I'm too short and I can't see over other people.
You think Martin's gridwalks are good at the races:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiwXaP9-BZs
:D
Is Nicki Pedersen winning?
I went to see this at Parken in Copenhagen last year. It was awesome!
It's the theme tune to "Mad Men" isn't it?
In what way? Isn't it a lossy format?
I like Bike racing, don't get me wrong. However, i prefer circuit racing because you can see the bikes move around lots, but on speedway you've always got your rear hanging out.
explain.
Lindgren, pedersen, johnson, adams, hancokc, bjerre, crump and emil sotere..... in the last 8
I FOUND IT! :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHS-0xMmlFk
That was class!
iphone doesn't support scroll bars, but you can still scroll content by putting two fingers on the comments and then make scolling actions.
Dunno, but it's meant to be alot better quality wise, and you can hear the difference too apparently.
That's why it's good to watch. They are never fullly under control - even in a straight line!
It's RJD2 - "A Beautiful Mine"
right, mp3 has downloaded. time to visualise a Legard-less Saturday.
You are so awesome. Thank you. :D
Cheers! Still getting used to scrolling on my iPod Touch!
Who here likes "Mad Men"? It's just started here in DK - looks interesting...
Gadget show? Utter garbage.
MP3 removes most of the frequencies above 16khz and is a digital format - it's an approximation of the audio wave
Vinyl is an analog format and is lossless
I'll take Vinyl any day - and after that I'll go for FLAC
Then enjoy taking your Vinyl box and record player around with you ;)
I'm not defending Legard in any way, regarding the replay fire thing, because I wasn't listening to him at the time, but Kubica does say he had two fires during quali today.
I have all my vinyl digitized to FLAC. ;)
As I have decent audio players, they play FLAC natively. :D
how are you not single?
how can YOU ask that?
Legard saw the second one and thought it was the first one?
Uh oh...
Sorry, I don't know what happened or what he said. I just thought I'd put the fact out there in case it helped. He's still rubbish :)
He did have 2 fires. You could clearly see that Kubica was having the second and Legard wasn't sure if it was a replay of the first or not.
Scott, how the hell did you find out where that music was from?
Didn't gavin say it?
I see. Apologies. Carry on.
Oh. K then.
I found a issue with Jaunty. Sound recording doesn't work anymore. So I can host the calls tomorrow but I will be even quieter than usual :)
Yup, he mentioned something about the theme to Mad Men, so I searched it on YouTube and found it ;)
ooh. understood. i did download the netbook version, but as yet have no looked at it.
"Err... and that's a fire... Kubica had a fire earlier... I don't know if that's a replay... it is a replay... i don't know... Kubica might not have problems... if that's a rerun of a... erm... replay..."
Agreed. :)
Question for Scott In Italy or Bassano. Is James Allen any good on RAI TV? I'm sure I heard that he would be speaking Italian too. Hope that's not as bad as Steve McLaren "speaking Dutch".
Back again.
Didn't expect the winner of the Speedway, but since about all but 1 other people here care about it. I'll carry on.
To be fair. I didn't know either. But on the fire note, that BMW is like a matchstick
But the two fires were very different?
He should have a better idea of what's going on then us, anyway...
And if not, just shhh instead of stumbling about.
I think it's sth specific to my computer and my piquetness
How can he not commentate on a fire?
I should not have listend to this 5 live commentary. Now I want it live.
Yes yes, another shameless plug:
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/
Poll ends in 3 hours, so if you haven't voted then please do. And while you're there, feel free to take a look at some of my blog posts :)
Just doin' the promo ;)
There is a replay of the BMW on fire. It's not good when a fire happens in the pitlane but it doesn't seem to be affecting his performance. Or maybe it is, because they aren't doing particularly well right now.
I'm no commentator, but that seems better to me than:
Just got moderated again.
True. At least it wasn't a mistake this time.
umm....last time he got the replay thing wrong you jumped on him for getting it wrong? maybe he's just been cautious?!
plus on fivelive, crofty wasnt sure if it was or not either
Maybe one of the reasons he's getting on people's nerves is that he never sounds quite sure, like he's relying on Martin a lot. If he talked, confidently, as if he knew about F1, and made mistakes but corrected them, I think that would be more appealing than the waffle.
But if I could tell what was happening both times, why couldn't he?
in fairness, you're in a slightly less pressure situation than his is.
I haven't been around since Friday morning, Is there a reason Doohickey directs to lclt.
I'll give you this
OK, thanks
Sheer bloody luck. :D
LMAO!
Sorry to pick on him again, but I had to drop.io this:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/legards-next-point-mp3
noooooo
That's what I was getting at!
As you showed me in Hyde Park. They were some coool players dude!
Because most of his collection is albums?
Tag Team! High Five! :D
RIght.... so now the post is full of comments (like a post race, when it happened before) the lclt will not update on chrome unless I post...
hey everyone,
how are you all?
wow..looks like i've got alot of catching up to do...
Oh where, oh where has my doohickey gone
Oh where, oh where can it be?
With new comments up top
and cool JQuery stuff
Oh what are you doing to me?
Hi Lou :D
Sing it and send it into SPC ;)
Lou. How are you today?
LOU! :D
evening :)
Thanks to Scott and Gavin for finding that song, btw. :)
Hey Lou. :)
i'm alright, only just managed to watch quali. Life has been a bit mental these last couple of days. God AS revision is a nightmare.
hi, have you missed me :P
we were worried!
No probs mate ;)
I think we all have!
Yeah - we had no idea what was happening with the Brawns out there today ;)
Nor did rubens by how angry and sad he sounds :(
It ain't a Sidepodday without lou.
And Scott and Gavin and Lukeh and Steven and you get the idea
Hells yeah, ma brother from another mother! :D
:D We are the Sidepodcrew ;)
I had an eye or two on them. ;)
hehe, i would have popped by to say hi, but as i say revision got in the way so i thought i'd wait till the weekend to catch up. i was gonna try and attempt to catch up yesterday but i got back from france pretty late and pretty exhausted
aw
neither did i till about 30mins ago :P
Jenson and Rubens looked like they were missing her support ;)
By the way - team names tomorrow should be doohickey vs. lclt!
wow looks like journeyer is pretty close to overtaking me in the top commenters list...
Just pull a Sutil and we'll be OK ;)
haha. Nice one. Or Webber v Sutil
hehe yeah they didn't look 100% competitive. i'm not too happy with jenson's lack of optimisim about the start tomorrow. although i can't really blame him, he does have the kers guys behind him...
hehe i feel so sorry for webber. he looked so happy in the pre- quali interview.
Baggsy team Sutil :D
Did anyone see what Rubens said to Autosport?
any questions that require prior research? I have a long day ahead :D
Rubens is in a worse postion though...
It is strange how the other teams have caught up so much and so quickly. I said earlier that I think Jenson will regret later on in the season that he only got half points in Malaysia...
Grid tonight, anyone?
I'd fancy some Americana muscle racing if anyone's up for it.
On the subject of FLAC files. I don't notice a difference between and that and mp3. F:AC file sizes are massive anyway. Anything over 8MB for a 3 minute song is overkill for me.
am just about to pluck up courage to open my feed reader...
that's very true.
Have you been up all night? (Thats not a research question btw)
Nope. I'm watching the buildup bits that I missed earlier...
Can I just say, go Dom, closing up on Scotty's time in the laptime comp
Sounds good, wouldn't mind a good contingent though.
No-one can unseat me! Mwahaha ;)
Sadly, not for the first time in my life. In about half an hour I'll be popping to the shop to buy some milk to have my breakfast :)
Q. How was qualifying?
Rubens Barrichello: Well do you want to know my real feeling, it is probably not good to write, but anyway.
:(
you haven't slept at all?
Someone's been keeping an eye on the wiki. ;)
You, my friend, are mad on sooo many sidepodcast levels.
And you've been up how long?
I check all the updates ;)
Dear oh dear Amy. Don't overdo it - you'll faint because of exhaustion and then you'll have to spend the next 6 months convincing doctors that you don't have epilepsy...
I woke up at 4pm yesterday, so I've only been awake for 15 hours. I seem to sleep all day on Saturdays then not at all on Saturday nights, I did it a lot at uni and never broke the habit.
Is it me or does DC try very hard not to show a deep dislike of EJ?
what the feck was all that EJ BRDC stuff about today? i would've glocked him one.
And not go me? You're forgetting I'm ahead of Dom!
Certainly. If Chris was on, that'd be good. Don't think we could have anyone else as Luke's 360 done a Sato.
Oh BTW - my Venezuelan friend hates Hamilton but loves Button (literally ;) )
Haha, Glocked him :D
I miss Gascoyne
Will tell you when I watch ity ;)
Shame :/
WD Mr. C :D
It's a conspi-race-y. :(
Race! Racing! Conspir...a....ahh i'll get my jacket.
You don't mean glocked him as in using Glock do you? ;)
:D
What's with all the Jordan dislike? I thought when he was announced, everyone was whoopin' and a-hollerin'.
i was. turns out he's a bit of a twonk.
Heheheee, twonk :D
yeah, i never doubted that jenson would be unhappy with just getting 5 points... not sure what he has to regret though ;) i'm not sure that the other teams have caught up that much.. i think it's the conditions. Traditionally honda were useless in bahrain, and i honestly didn't expect them to be super quick this year either. I wasn't surprising Vettel to be as quick... actually maybe i should save this untill i see the fuel weights...
Theres a difference of pre determining it and post watching it.
Like everyone thought Jake would be useless, but, y'know how we feel now
The passing of time was great for making us forget how annoying he was.
it's fair to say, everything i though pre-season has been incorrect except for ted.
Because he's too cynical, he argues with DC too much and Gascoyne is much better because he provides a deep technical analysis!
i really liked him as a team owner.
and Martin?
Welcome back Lou ;)
And gascoyne looks like a elf and that makes me giggle
it was my idea for f1 to go to china don't ya know? meeee.
The races which I can't wait for this year more than before are Monaco and Monza. 2 races which are unique, and because it'll be far enough into the season for the pecking order to be vert different to how it is now, we can sort of compare performance to last year.
as yes. him too.
:D tis very good to be back. it's been a strance couple of evenings without the comments.
yer wot?
Just seen them walk and talk for the first time - amazing! Through the back of a garage!
Oh - they're walking again! Like they actually care about more than one driver!
Its nice to see him getting better.
That alone should decide it. :P
:D
F1 Cribs? BBC, I love you!
Would be good to see Eddie next year if Carroll got into F1. I swear to god, the thought of Carroll in F1 is making me beam.
:D
Buemi has a flash house eh?
I found some 'tour round Buemis house' on youtube, I love the way he says 'dining room'
Evening all
Just scanning through the comments and notice Christine is having difficulty finding summaries. Would it not be easier to just have a wiki page where people could post their summaries?
"You can see the pool a lot, I can go swim a lot."
It will be very difficult for him to come back - and besides, with a stronger Indycar series and ALMS, why would he want to?
Rubens is lighter than Button! Hamilton and Button on the same fuel levels! *is speachless* i'm away from the f1 world for a few days and Mclaren catch up... and Brawn... well... i blame... the conditions...
Brawn are still ahead.
He said that he could get into either F1 or IRL, which indicates that he really wants one of those 2, or either. Besides, if he's A1GP champion, why the hell not? Can't be worse than Nelson Piquet.
Richard Branson's smile caused glare from the sun for the Brawn drivers I say. I blame that. :)
How are the conditions to blame? do you mean the extreme heat?
Excuses, excuses. I might as well blame the fire for Kubica's poor performance ;)
i know... i was just... i dunno... not really expecting it.. lol
Ooh, there's a live broadcast of an FSR race just about to start on PSRTV :D
Well good luck to him - but he didn't do very well in GP2 last year did he?
erm.. i'm not sure really :P erm sure why not ;)
It's not the end of the world. Brawn won't be super quick everywhere, and nor will Toyota, Red Bull or anyone else.
Vinyl isn't lossless, it can't reproduce very low or very high frequencies. A digital recording is always going to be an approximation of the analogue signal, but the approximation is usally close enough that we can't tell the difference.
Purely by chance, vinyl recordings sound "right" to the human ear, but most of us either can't tell the difference or are happy to put up with a slight degradation in quality in return for the ability to listen on the go.
Next thing you'll be telling us about the special oxygen free cable you use to connect the record player to the amplifier, you know, the one that has to be "run in" for 2 weeks and cost 2 grand. ;)
True. I just want an Irish guy racing again damnit. One that isn't a-hole like Eddie Irvine. is it too much to ask?! :(
Where's Ralph Firman these days?
I used to sell those - that was the only way I could make comission on Stereo sales.
I'll tell you what - standard cable is rubbish. WHen you use better cable, you get better picture and wider range of sounds. Even a pleb like me can tell the difference ;)
Of course not!
Oh please. That guy was as Irish as millions of Americans. Hate that flipping.......ggrr.
We need to depress that man quickly!
Has he seen the picture of flavio?
I was just wondering...
Last I heard of him he was racing a Honda NSX in Japanese Super GT. Presumably still is. My dad use to have him as a regular when he owned a pub.
*shudders*
Well to answer your question, I hope he's somewhere which isn't anywhere near an F1 race seat. If he gets in again, I'll throw something very far and hope it hits him.
He didn't say that - he said "I was one of the people Bernie got involved in bringing F1 to China".
I'll try and become the next big Irish driver then I think :D
Although I don't have enough money... I can't drive.... and I'm not Irish. They may be a problem.
Maybe, but the "one way only" type cables are a complete waste of money. What really annoys me more than anything is the special digital (and optical) cables. What's the point when the signal will either arrive at the other end or it won't?
Well he is responsible then if he didn't say "Oi Bernie! NO!"
Just say you're 1/16th Irish. Americans do it so it MUST work. :P
Hmm odd - he seemed to think that Silverstone would have the race in 2010 because Bernie was the Master of Reverse Pyschology...
There was an interesting follow-up to that. DC replied with:
DC: "Well that's where I've been going wrong because you always understood reverse pyschology and I always took people at Face Value"
EJ: "That's why you never drove for me David!
DC: "Well thankfully, that was the case!"
Part 2:
It was a bit offensive that EJ suggested that Damon Hill and DC were not doing everything they could to keep the British GP... DC should have lamped him!
OK... Now I'm on the lclt and not many people are commenting - I'm scared I'm in the wrong thread!
I'm still here, Gav!
What, you really think I'll leave you all alone? ;)
:D
Aww bless ;)
am watching bill bailey videos :)
It always surprises me how musically talented he is!
hehe :)
You know what I hate about these new tracks? There's zero penalty for going off the track because of all the tarmac runoffs!
I got a new pair of team names: Piquet vs Grosjean ;)
Johnathon Legard vs Replays :P
For some reason I'm really looking foward to Valencia this year. As well as the 4 classic venues.
giggles eat your heart out, there's a new crooner in town:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/25/a-song-for-felipe-baby/
why are you looking forward to Valencia?
OH......MY......GOD! :D
Christine has a brilliant singing voice!
Wow. Just wow. This is fantastic. We need a video now.
Isn't it just! I'm like "Is that really Christine!" She's amazing! :D
The lyrics are fantastic as well :D
Wow! That's fantastic! :D
She does, wow! That was mega impressive. I'm expecting sooo many retweets on twitter now about it :P
I find with Chrome if you point at the down arrow on the scroll bar without clicking new comments then load.
That's just made me want to do a song of my own even more :D
that was my first retweet ever, I never bother with them but that needs one :)
I've just found a great story for you Gavin - New Scientist visted a hi-fi show where Quad were demonstrating their latest speakers to an excited and appreciative audience of hi-fi geeks^W enthusisasts. The journalist noticed that the speaker cables looked familiar - they were bright orange. He asked where they came from. The answer - we got them from the DIY store across the road, they're from a standard mains extension lead. Cost £20.
So, who broke the doohickey?
guilty.
I don't need to ask who is fixing it. :P
Don't hold your breath.
am on it.
had the tiniest of breakthroughs with rubbishy old wordpress. more soon.
With Piquety old Wordpress. Actually... that doesn't work. As you were.
The monster rises up to take on it's creator.....

Coming soon - Sidepodcast, presented by Christine and a real-time commenting solution (or should that be nightmare)
See, it annoys me when people moan about how the Valencia track is crap. I ask why and they say "because the race was crap". A race equates to a track layout how exactly? Monaco doesn't accomodate much but is still seen as a great track. Valencia looks like a very fun track to drive, especially the final sector.
Too many corners in a short distance with only one line per corner. The design of the track is a disaster.
It began, as a simple real-time commenting solution. Little did they know........
For me, there were two main problems with Valencia the track: it created too much field spread, and it was a building site to look at.
Niki Lauda is going to be a space cadet
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/74834
in lou's defence there she was just asking why you were looking forward to it. Although i'm not a fan of Valencia, it's too... concretey. I know that's an awful reason but there's just a horrid bland feel to the track layout, the surrounding and the event in general. Just doesn't seem a fun track personally.
More fun that Bahrain anyways =P Evenings :)
i saw that earlier, love it
The Graham Hill film is available on the iplayer. I haven't seen it yet so I don't know if it is any good or not.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00bv14q/Graham_Hill_Driven/
Rubens is too - I wonder if that's part of the sponsorship deal.
I watched it a few months ago and I found it captivating, so much more of a fan about Graham Hill and his history from watching it. Dare I say it had me a bit emotional at times.
Rubens is only getting a back seat but Niki is getting to drive.
Actually I shall watch this again. So so good. Cheers for the link steven.
It was inevitable

From 1:37 to the end looks especially fun.
Same about the Jim Clark one. I watched it last night having read quite a lot about him, but I never heard his voice before. Was a bit strange to finally put a voice to the face. Great film.
Totally agree, this entire series is really fantastic viewing. I'm really gutted I missed out on the JYS one. :(
Juan Manuel!
How Grid going?:P
Ooh, good one :)
Just listening to Stand By LewHam
L.M.F.A.O :D
Thats the only one I've seen, and it was great. I have the Jim Clark one lined up to watch next.
Yo Guiseppe, have improved a bit over whats on the wiki, will post it soon. Been trying to finish the thesis, so havent spent much time on it. Hows the yanks? You surviving?
:o Didnt know there was JYS one :(
I've got my idea for a song now. Just gotta rework the lyrics ;)
W00t! More Sidepodsingles.
I'll give a hint - think McLaren ;)
Nice.
Well, they finally bloody rang us today, and they're coming tomorrow. Though they're only staying in the country until Wednesday, we though they'd stay longer. And they're actually only staying here for tomorrow night. So......yeeeeeeeees! They'll be here for a day or 2 and then bog off. Thank christ.
I am more than willing to take credit for the Mika/Heikki ones I uploaded even though I clearly didn't make them.
Still no clue.
Someone do a Coldplay or Muse one. Pleeeeaaaaaase.
Please PLEASE don't tempt me
lol. Thats the spirit! :p
Trust me, at times all I can think of is
'Heikki, Heikki, Heikki Kovalainen'
Awww, you know you want to.
time to upload the Alonso one then, that's even MORE catchy
Noooooooo.
Hmmm, wait a minute.
i loved the graham hill film alot.
ah go on! you know you want to! :P
Come on, they compare him to Superman!
Me too!
Mmm... we'll see. ;)
I wasn't thinking along the lines of Alonso lets say that
a whole post from ollie:

I often find myself singing 'no quiero Barrichello' when I'm alone
Just caught up on comments after golfing then beer with Dad, looks like I missed an interesting afternoon. :-)
If you're able to listen to it:

;)
You ALL have way too much time on your hands!
Haha, awesome. :)
I'll record mine tomorrow...
I so wish Grid had some sort of Save Replay feature. With FIFA games, you can upload replays onto the EA Sports site, and then watch the replays from your own profile, it couldn't have been too difficult for Codemasters to do similar. Even just saving them to your HD........damnit Codemasters :(
Just trying to find an instrumental of the song to put it with ;)
i have bad images of you searching google for "Blue - All Rise instrumental"
which is what I'm doing right now :D
indeed....
check youtube... there are often loads of instrumentals on there..
Or have a go with Audacity or a similar audio editing program.
You mean take the vocals out of the song? I've got the album so I could rip the song and try that.
oh.dear
Someoen take that spade off Scott before he digs himself into a deeper hole! :P
I'm still wondering how to share this, I managed to obtain it :)
Fine, I'll stop.
To quote buemi... nooo! :(
S'all just for fun anyways. I'll record mine either tonight or tomorrow.
Nope, you made your point.
Same here. Though after it could be intresting to see how long Timo waits before giving me a restraining order.
Which is worse, making a parody of a Blue song or owning a Blue CD?
Search on google how to do it. You might not get it 100%, but it should make the vocals pretty quiet. If you do it that is.
Noo! :(
Don't be silly, just go for it. We're all in the same boat is trying to reach Christine's epically good singing anyways! :P
But it's obvious the song choice is ridiculous, and I can't think of anything else which would be suitable to make into an F1-related song.
Alternatively - a visit to the music man. section of the local library and a couple of hours copying out the dots into garageband, then sing over the top... then you can edit etc just to use the section you want to without any of the messy stuff.
(although if you have access to a reel-to-reel, a razor blade and the right width of splicing tape it could be easier down that way... but I'm old fashioned like that, lol, cos I could do things on tape that were a pita to do electronically, lol)
There's annnnnnnything you can do,doesn't just have to be that song, just give yourself time to think :)
doh, ray, me, far, so, la, te, doh.
tough work, this singing malarky.
Trust me, hear my song, and you could use Beethoven to do it
Almost anything would be suitable with the 'right' libretto....
(or you could just go for something really really obscure just to confuse everyone else...)
but he's dead? is it that bad?
"you can still hear Beethoven, but Beethoven cannot hear you."
Erm, I kinda meant in terms of his songs
"Schmachers gone, but his team it lives on. It just isn't very fast now...."
LPG, who can't spell this evening, but has idle, coward and G&S running through her head...(with a touch of Lehrer on the side...)
'His name was Bernie and he ran the fastest team sport in the west"
Right, see you all later Will Young's. Will be in time for the race. Ciao
Damn, now I have another song idea...
christine's alarm just went off for the start of race coverage!
*rushes off to bbc1*
...waiiit just a mintue, youuu!!
see ya r.g.
That'll be sidepodtime again then?

pation!
sooo, what's everybody eating for the race?
i'm confused.
I'm gonna be at my dads, so probably a lot of chocolate, Pringles, biscuits and orange juice.
I have a dilemma. I'm working tomorrow, so even if I start watching the race as soon as I get home, I still won't be finished in time for the live show. :(
miss the debrief and be around for the panel?
Bahrain have a night race?
wow...
oh and i have a confession to make about the panel... i havent written any questions yet... lol am i still co hosting with jackie?
Bernies out foxed us again...
shhh, you'll give the tiny man ideas.
yup.
It's on the Wiki. The wiki never lies ;)
Now that sounds like a plan. :D
You wil find it easy to come up with questions. Once you sit down and think about it they will be easy to come up with
okay :) shall think of a few questions tomorrow, and a lovely killer question for you all :P
That's what I'm doing, I'll probably be doing the "cup of tea at mum's place" thing in the afternoon.
sounds good! plus of course you'll ahve the race to help :)
And then there is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Formula_One/Related_Pages
with alphabetical and non so lists of every topic you could ever want to set to G&S 's Major Generals song (and yes I've tried and some of those lists work really really well :-) )
Jon Holmes?
christine's alarm is going off for the start of race coverage (i kid not).
this is going tobe a loong night.
did... did I just go back 10 minutes or am I going mad?
:D hehehe
:D
i'll ask legard...
Will he be able to tell though?
I'm falling behind on everything. I seem to have gained 447 unread things in my RSS reader. OTOH I've just caught up on Heroes.
And heck the major generals song itself shouldn't take too much work... excepting of course that everyone and its aunt seems to have done a version with this...
Time to rethink the thing...
Is the Felipe baby song the real reason that the doohickey is suspended? If so, I think it is worth the inconvenience.
hehehehe :)
I was going to record it then as I started I got told to shut up by parents. Boo.
Will have to wait till the morning. :(
well i heard him say about 3 times that a driver was fastest... each time the driver hadn't even finished the lap... if he can't read the currect order from the live timings i doubt he will be able to tell the time ;)
please ignore this...
testety test
*whistles innocently*
And it's 14 past midnight, from 13 past midnight, from 12 past midnight...
:D
I much prefer Murray's method of telling us the race order.
:D
I miss Doohickey, if we behave ourselves - can he come out to play soon?
hehe. yeah, we tried that one before. i am working on fixes though, honest.
I hope he isn't covering the marathon tomorrow. There are thousands of entrants, it would take ages.
:D :D
as long as it comes back with you a lot happier with how it works and not causing as many problems for you guys then take your time i say :)
...that was the wrong quote. bum.
i catch ya drift though.
one issue is there was an intention to makes changes two weeks before the start of the season, and there hasn't been any free time since then. that's just crazy.
Seeing as it's there, shouldn't we convene in tomorrow's daily comments?
You had me wondering for a minute there...
aye
:D :D
ooo that reminds me, i need to sponsor my psychology teacher who is running in it...
just a quick q. is the debrief and panel at the normal time of 7pm?
(normal sidepodtime, i may add)
okay am very tired, i'm off to get some sleep. night all x
Ask in the right thread and you'll get an answer ;-)
