The action gets underway in Bahrain today, and we're looking at a dry race, at least. The prospect of a sandstorm seems to increase the more we talk about it, so we'll see what happens. Here are some of the things we're discussing at the moment (but they'll soon be outdated by FP1 and 2):

  • The chances of a race at Donington Park are looking less and less as their debts seem to increase. At the moment, they've got £2.5 million hanging over their heads owed in rent to Wheatcroft & Sons. The building isn't even completed and they're already facing legal proceedings.
  • Prodrive have added their name to the "we want to join the F1 party" list. Chances are this is just because the topic is going around at the moment, but Richards did suggest that he would enter F1 when the time is right - is that time 2010?
  • Apparently, Mosley has written to the teams to get their opinion on the £30 million budget cap. He wanted them to submit figures that they thought might be more appropriate with a deadline of yesterday, so I wonder if we will here what they think.

That's all for now, although do check out Chris' great post about Codemasters upcoming F1 game. There'll be plenty more to come today in terms of blogs, podcasts and discussions, so stay tuned, and I'll see you in the comments.

Ayt, time to move over. ;)

  • Amy24/04/2009 at 00:20

I shall be missing my first practice of the season, I'll be having withdrawals no doubt. See you all for FP2!

Awww! :D I won't be around for all of FP2, but I'll see you when I see you, Amy!

Right, must go to bed. WIll have to find something to listen to on my iPod to distract me from morris dancers. Night all, let me know if you work out if Schumacher is a worthy champion or not.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:23

At least this time Sidepodcast works and everything else is broken.

Better it be broken today, than it be broken on Sunday.

  • Andy+Taylor24/04/2009 at 00:23

That's Michael, of course. No discussion needed for Ralf.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:23

No one else to discuss it with, so he IS a worthy champion!

    Night, Andy. ;)

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:24

    He's not even a champion. :D

    Worthy of what?

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:30

    Worthy of what?

If Michael Schumacher is worthy of his championships.

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:30

If Michael Schumacher is worthy of his championships.

About as worthy a Piquiet Snr I guess

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:33

If Michael Schumacher is worthy of his championships.

I always thought he had little competition other than Mika. I you look at the late 80s, early 90s, there were a lot more world champions competeing. But I guess all this has been said.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:33

About as worthy as Piquet Snr I guess

Mr C would love you. :D

But seriously, he has to be more worthy than Nelson Sr. Maybe higher than Senna, but lower than Fangio?

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:34

I always thought he had little competition other than Mika. I you look at the late 80s, early 90s, there were a lot more world champions competeing. But I guess all this has been said.

Yup, it has. But I think it's just that Michael was so much better than the rest. Had Michael not been around, we'd have all been discussing how high-up all time Montoya and Raikkonen would be.

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:38

I guess so. Since I didn't see the rest of the discussion, I wont carry on. But Ferrari were so far ahead in the early naughtys, and Williams and the like were in decline. No Brabham, no Lotus......

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:40

Yup. We kinda end up with a chicken or egg question - did Williams and McLaren go into decline because of Ferrari's rise? Or did Ferrari rise thanks to their decline?

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:41

Yup. We kinda end up with a chicken or egg question - did Williams and McLaren go into decline because of Ferrari’s rise? Or did Ferrari rise thanks to their decline?

    Excatly.

Anyway, that's why things are looking so good now. More competition, and more real world champions on the grid. 3 and counting......

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:43

I wonder what the maximum number of world champs have lined up on the grid.

We need some of the F1 anoraks back on.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:45

Way things are looking, we'll get a 4th one this year. ;)

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:46

I wonder what the maximum number of world champs have lined up on the grid.

Austria 1978 had the best grid ever, in terms of champions and race winners.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 00:46

Not sure which issue of F1 Racing I saw it on, but that's the one.

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 00:48

Not sure which issue of F1 Racing I saw it on, but that’s the one.

I'll have to dig that race up. I think the earliest Austria GP I have is 1982.

Yep, none of the 3 that are already there have a chance of winning it this year.

keeping sidepodtime caught up with me yesterday and i fell asleep around comment 250. So i have enjoyed catching up on 1000 comments today while i was supposed to be working. I like that while i was sleeping people were commenting that i hadnt slept all season. As for schumi, i wish rubens hadnt been such a #2 driver. That is all i will say on that ;)

Not sleeping is one thing, sidepodcasting at work is another.

I fear I am getting funny looks about the amount of typing that I am doing!

    Just lucky.

Or is it that I spend my whole day with them?

Oh sorry. I hope the last day was OK though.

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:33

Are you getting up for a new job?

I have applied for one, but so far, there's not much I've seen that I fancy doing

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:34

Oh sorry. I hope the last day was OK though.

Well I'm glad I went in but it was difficult

Well best of luck. I know it's hard, but things will get better.

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:36

So do you get live streaming of FP1 this morning ( or is it late afternoon for you)

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:36

    Thanks Paul :D

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:37

Late afternoon it will be. Hoping for a justin.tv. Unless I am off to the beach for the weekend

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:37

Sorry Pauli .. I missed off the i at the end

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:37

Late afternoon it will be. Hoping for a justin.tv. Unless I am off to the beach for the weekend

Ah yes, with the time difference its the weekend for you. Are you doing anything special?

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:38

Sorry Pauli .. I missed off the i at the end

No worries. It is Paul - I just have friends that call me Pauli....

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:38

Ah yes, with the time difference its the weekend for you. Are you doing anything special?

We have a long weekend this weekend, so it's a chance to head to the beach for me. Although that means missing the racing and sidepodcasting

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:39

So are all the European races run in the middle of the night Oz time?

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:40

We have a long weekend this weekend, so it’s a chance to head to the beach for me. Although that means missing the racing and sidepodcasting

Oh nice, enjoy that .. you can always record the race .. it's the 5000 comments you'll come back to here that will be a challenge :)

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:40

Actually most are not too bad, starting about 10pm, so that's OK.

Problem is where I am (Canberra) we get no live TV, so it's Justintv, or a replay at some stupid time

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:42

Problem is where I am (Canberra) we get no live TV, so it’s Justintv, or a replay at some stupid time

Oh dear, so it's challenging to be an F1 fan in Australia .. and here's us moan when we have to do stupid o'clock for about 3 races a year

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 04:42

Late afternoon it will be. Hoping for a justin.tv. Unless I am off to the beach for the weekend

The usual suspects should have it on - I don't think they've been discovered by Bernie's henchmen yet. :D

Oh dear, so it’s challenging to be an F1 fan in Australia .. and here’s us moan when we have to do stupid o’clock for about 3 races a year

Never worried me - I so happy I can now get it live on the Internet !!

Oh dear, so it’s challenging to be an F1 fan in Australia .. and here’s us moan when we have to do stupid o’clock for about 3 races a year

:D It's not so bad, really. The worst bit is usually Brazil, because we have to stay up extra late for that. In Paul's case, I think they get up extra early for it.

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:43

The usual suspects should have it on - I don’t think they’ve been discovered by Bernie’s henchmen yet. :D

At least the feed quality seems to be getting better with widescreen now

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 04:46

At least the feed quality seems to be getting better with widescreen now

It is slowly getting there, especially for you guys in the UK and Aus. Over here, we still get a standard 4:3 feed. At least I have a widescreen now, so I see the whole image. It turns out my old TV used to cut off the upper and lower edges of the feed. :O

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:47

At least the feed quality seems to be getting better with widescreen now

Honestly, when you are used to V8 touring cars and nothing else, seeing live F1 is great however it looks. I was actually happy just watching live timing for a couple of races last year!

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:48

Whilst I remember, about the quiz. I was suggested we could do an occassional one earlier but Jolly has other commitments in the afternoon.

If I could find a weekend time that fits in with the evergrowing sidepodcast schedule of shows I'd be willing to host a quiz .. unless you fancy hosting one?

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 04:50

If I could find a weekend time that fits in with the evergrowing sidepodcast schedule of shows I’d be willing to host a quiz .. unless you fancy hosting one?

    *ducks*

    I hope to be surfing

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:50

Just live timing .. ooh, I think I'd lose interest very quickly. I honestly thought that with F1's global appeal that there would be decent coverage for most parts of the world

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:50

    I hope to be surfing

Now you're just making me jealous!

Just live timing .. ooh, I think I’d lose interest very quickly. I honestly thought that with F1’s global appeal that there would be decent coverage for most parts of the world

Actually it's getting better. Problem is, live coverage is now on HD digital which is currently in the "larger capital cities" only, which doesn't count us.

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 04:54

Do you listen to the streaming with your headphones on? When we used to get FP1 and 2 online with ITV I used to love the sound of the cars, and you don't seem to notice that so much on the tv

  • Alex Andronov24/04/2009 at 04:57

I don't have any good headphones. I get lazy and lay on the couch with the laptop.

No headphones on, just listen to it with speakers. That's one advantage of no commentary, I guess - the natural sound really comes alive.

  • Alex Andronov24/04/2009 at 05:00

Hey Pauli. I have heard rumours that One sport is coming to Canberra on standard def free to air...Have you heard anything like this? Mind you I have also heard that Ch10 aren't going to bother with Canberra cos it's "regional".

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 05:43

Hey Pauli. I have heard rumours that One sport is coming to Canberra on standard def free to air…Have you heard anything like this? Mind you I have also heard that Ch10 aren’t going to bother with Canberra cos it’s “regional”.

Yeah, I have heard both. OneHD has a banner saying it's "coming in future months", whatever that means.

  • Rocket24/04/2009 at 05:43

Btw, I think we are the only two F1 fans in Canberra.

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 05:44

There's at least one more, but can't remember his name.

  • Pauli (oz)24/04/2009 at 05:46

I am so tempted to ring CH10…mind you that probably won’t help.

I've been watching the DTV forums, and a lot of people have done that - for no response. I really don't think they care. They have had a HD test loop going for almost 2 years now.

  • Sean Golding24/04/2009 at 05:50

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 06:00

Afternoon Journeyer. Do you really think that it’s Bernie thats responsible for feeds being removed?

Absolutely - FOM own the commercial rights, so they're the only people who can chase down these providers.\

Whilst I remember, about the quiz. I was suggested we could do an occassional one earlier but Jolly has other commitments in the afternoon.

If I could find a weekend time that fits in with the evergrowing sidepodcast schedule of shows I’d be willing to host a quiz .. unless you fancy hosting one?

Over the weekend? Absolutely! I can do a pre-race one on a Sunday. :D Does this mean I prepare the questions?

I work by the theory that girls always rule. And am therefore always afraid

Agreed. Should be tons of fun to watch. :D

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 06:09

Just realized - Sunday pre-race won't do when Parade Lap comes back.

Maybe a pre-quali Saturday, then. I won't always be free at that time, though. ;)

Best time for me to host a quiz would be Monday or Tuesday afternoon your time. :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/04/2009 at 06:11

Afternoon Journeyer. Do you really think that it’s Bernie thats responsible for feeds being removed?

Absolutely - FOM own the commercial rights, so they’re the only people who can chase down these providers.\

Just think how much money they would make if they offered an online feed for a subscription!

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 06:13

    Ja, der er det :D

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 06:19

    Ja, der er det :D

:D so there are some similarities with the German language?

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 06:22

Just think how much money they would make if they offered an online feed for a subscription!

Indeed. But then they know that such an online feed would drag away people from TV feeds - and they don't want to lose that revenue stream, but it will always pay more than an online channel. Which is why we probably won't see any online F1 feed from FOM.

That would be great .. just need to drum up some afternoon players. You can always send me a message on PF if you want to arrange something

I was thinking of the bank holiday on the 4th, but I have a morning commitment the following day. Arg. Will see when a good time would be. ;)

Only 5 years ago? I remember having to use GeoCities for an assignment 10 years ago! :D

A shame they're on their way out... Personal websites nowadays are actually blogs, which is why Geocities lost out to platforms like Blogger and Wordpress.

Goodness me, I changed my FR lineup again.

This time, I let go of Webber for Glock. In case Toyota DO make it back to 2nd overall, at least I'll be scoring c/o Glock. I'm keeping Vettel, though.

Just watching Murray walker answer some questions, and he believes a former driver should be part of the stewards. I can see the benifits but won't that cause more problems as people will believe that they are biased to a team because they have raced with them?

F1-Pitlane got set up through a GeoCities site last year. It was an exciting time to be there. When I have free time, I may write more stuff for them.

(F1-Pitlane itself isn't on GeoCities, so that's one headache the site admins won't have).

  • bootneckuk24/04/2009 at 09:39

As mention in today's daily about Donnington, I don't personally think the GP should go there anyway, and now that it looks like they may be on shaky ground should'nt someone put a rocket up the BRDC's ar*e and get them to relly sort out Silverstone once and for all. Last I heard Damon was saying that they had the money in place, so why not spend it.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 09:39

Damon seems to be implying he doesn't need govt help - where will he get the funding from??

What did you have for Malaysia and China? :)

No idea if he's said what he had for Malaysia (durian, maybe?) or China.

  • Alianora La Canta24/04/2009 at 09:43

bootneckuk, Bernie hates the BRDC because it doesn't have the seemingly-infinite resources of a government, needs the British Grand Prix to run close to breakeven point in order for it to be feasible for them and is run on lines vaguely resembling a democracy. There isn't anything it could have done to salvage this race.

  • Alianora La Canta24/04/2009 at 09:44

Right, I'm going to catch a Doctor Who episode before Free Practise 2. See you!

Maybe to ensure the wound doesn't reopen? There's no way that could've been deeper than the cut Mansell had way back.

  • Flibster24/04/2009 at 09:51

    Goat? :O Interesting.

What did you have for Malaysia and China? :)

Goat should be quite nice. Freshly slaughtered too *picking it up today*

Also having fried breem and chips. :D It's not traditional, but popular.

Also going to try to make traditional Bahraini coffee - done over an open fire...

Malaysia was a couple of things - the best of which was a steamed palm sugar custard. I made enough for 6-8 people. I ate the lot. :D

    The rest was kinda nondescript.

These flywaway races are difficult for me - I hate rice, but I had some very basic steamed then flash fried fish with noodles and some pork balls.

Was trying to get some fresh cuttlefish, but failed.

Did have some very nice proper chineese tea though.

pubs and bars are slightly different, that's how i view it anyway. Pubs are your traditional go and have a beer and have a chat to your mates, a bar is more doof doof music with overpriced cocktails that make me feel like an old lady because I hate them so very much.

Little bit of freedom left then :)

  • Scott Woodwiss24/04/2009 at 14:50

Little bit of freedom left then

Hehe, yup. But I only have to work either a Saturday or Sunday a week, and I get one day off in the week as well, which is nice. I've got 18.5 days holiday as well, which is 2.3 days per month.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 14:51

    Hey, everyone!

    Hey, Scott. :D

    Everyone's FR lineup locked-in? :)

  • Scott Woodwiss24/04/2009 at 14:51

Good thing is that this branch looks after the repairs for O2, Phones 4 U and Tesco, so I'm predicting I might have to be testing out iPhones for faults. That's another part of the job.

Trying to avoid a race ban and just incur a fine. With this written apology (and Lewis Hamilton's star power), it just might work. I really think they'll just get a fine.

Surely McLaren don't have as much money as we all think they do. They're still paying off the $50million from the spy scandal, I assume?

    Already paid off.

They had to pay it off by early last year IIRC. This years car is the first to be impacted by the fine really.

No, it was the thing you press down, my thumb was under it and managed to be caught by the edge.

I had him earlier on but droppped him as I’ve not been too impressed with his race performance. Maybe it’s the team making bad decisions, not sure yet

I was thinking that too, but then Kubica hasn't shown that much form, either, other than that banzai run on the options. I'm better off going with a car that has pace in it. Rosberg is the weakest guy in my lineup, anyway, with Button, Barrichello, Vettel, and Glock in it too.

  • Flibster24/04/2009 at 16:11

They weren’t looking at the TV feed, they were looking at the timing screen.

    They could have turned around

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 16:41

    Wasn’t he on loan?

Who loaned him to who, exactly?

  • Amy24/04/2009 at 16:41

You can tell Webber doesn't podium often, I've never seen someone look so awkward when they spray champagne.

  • Jon Waldock24/04/2009 at 16:41

Who loaned him to who, exactly?

He was a Red Bull Junior

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 16:42

He was a Red Bull Junior

Ah, but he won in Formula BMW, right?

  • me24/04/2009 at 16:43

the factory returns. season two inside the williams hq:

"In a change from the programme’s first season, which focused on individuals and their impact within the team, this year’s episodes will be more documentary-based. At least once a month, Eurosport’s crew will record Williams F1’s race preparations and how various departments work, as well as features focusing on technical aspects such as KERS."

  • Jon Waldock24/04/2009 at 16:43

Ah, but he won in Formula BMW, right?

That dosen't give you anything. It's just another series

  • RG - Can't go two minutes without Timo24/04/2009 at 16:44

Right, I'll see you all in a few hours. And yay for the factory to be coming back

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 16:44

That dosen’t give you anything. It’s just another series

It does - it allows BMW to give him a test drive which would lead to a contract.

  • Lukeh24/04/2009 at 16:44

just wanna re-bring up what I posted earlier today, it's far too funny I thought to miss out on if anyone did :D

Oh my god, this is from the 2004 Bahrain Grand Prix and Mr Legard explaining Michael Schumacher’s pit stop. I can’t get over how utterly stupid this is:

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/legard-mp3

If he just looking around the commentators box?!!!

  • Scott Woodwiss24/04/2009 at 16:45

That dosen’t give you anything. It’s just another series

Wasn't he Renault World Series champion despite leaving halfway through to do F1?

  • Jon Waldock24/04/2009 at 16:45

It does - it allows BMW to give him a test drive which would lead to a contract.

You only get a BMW F1 test if you win the Formula BMW World Thing which is the top 4/5 people from each series. In theory he could have got a contract, but Red Bull snapped him up and he went to WSR

  • me24/04/2009 at 16:46

i think he was a bit bored of schumi winning. which i can relate to, but fruit?

  • Lukeh24/04/2009 at 16:49

I honestly cant work out what he was doing, I've watched it again on the BBC website and it's just schumi in the pits when he starts saying it...

There is no explanation to the various snacks being brought up!

seriously, perhaps it's some mnemonic device he had from school?

my assumption is, earlier in the race he must've made reference to how easy the team make pitstops look. delivering tyres like a waiter... or something.

  • Lukeh24/04/2009 at 16:53

he did say at one point schumacher is having a quiet sunday drive, that's the only correlation I can make between the two, but even then I can't see what cakes, napkins and fruit ahve to do with a sunday drive :D

  • Jon Waldock24/04/2009 at 16:54

Interesting… I thought it was BMW who had him under contract first.

Ok, so i've looked at his career, he was snapped up by Red Bull for the juniors program up till WSR, then BMW made him the 3rd driver whilst still being in WSR, then he was called up to race by BMW. So i don't know :S he was contracted by both at once i guess

  • me24/04/2009 at 16:54

the person at fault here is the person who looked back at legard's previous f1 commentary and said "we'll have im!".

clearly the guy's useless, just no-one's bothered to tell him.

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 16:56

That's what I saw too... how very odd. Oh well, it's done him no harm... except for his helmet design. ;)

2006 he was called up to be F1 Third driver after kubica made the race team, but was also doing F3 Euroseries (red bull car).

2007 he was third driver and did WSR too (red bull car) but then was called up to the race team after Kubica's "moment"

it's been a while since i watched tennis without federer. it's not deliberate but italian tv doesn't show it and the swiss tv only show the odd swiss competition or the final 8 or federer matches. not that they're biased.

  • Jon Waldock24/04/2009 at 17:17

All the tennis is on pay tv here except for the grand slams, but once I found streams online that were guaranteed not to disappear I started watching a lot more. Federer is still my favourite though.

i can only think of running and cycling, but they're also forms of racing.

how about the Royal Rumble thing that Wrestlemania used to do (not sure if they do…i last saw in 2002)

that's 2 different pay-per-views, the Rumble's in January and Mania is in March/April. :D yeah, there's that, but not everyone will even agree if it's a sport or not. ;)

    anything else?

Aah. back in the day i think it was just the one. i agree other than racing type things, i cannot think of anything. orienteering is a similar team sport but racing again. how 'bout shooting? no racing there, other than the biathlon type stuff.

  • chris evans24/04/2009 at 17:34

it's wierd, a friend burnt it on a DVD for me and i had no idea who 99% of the people were but it was still really fun to watch. Soemthing really enjoyable about the royal rumble match

ah yes, but they don't necessarily shoot against each other, more one at a time, rather than directly competitng

  • Journeyer24/04/2009 at 17:35

That was Wrestltmania, didn’t watch that. Royal Rumble is a separate event.

hang on - who were the last 2 men at the Rumble? i thought it was HBK and Taker - to tease a Mania match?

Agreed. I only really cared about Rey Mysterio, Undertaker and Kane.

  • Scott in Italy24/04/2009 at 17:36

I was more implying (badly) that I maintain it is real. it is the audience that is fake. and maybe the referee.

ah yes, but they don’t necessarily shoot against each other, more one at a time, rather than directly competitng

one shot, and you could take your time....

Think it's time for digest quotes:

Plenty of on-track action to keep us amused, with a lot of drivers finding it difficult to stay on the road, especially at Turn 10. McLaren seem to be making further strides towards the front, and Rosberg retains his title of King of Free Practice. Ferrari had another torrid time while my new favourite Sutil certainly made an impact in the vastly improved Force India. Piquet also proved my point that he's quite useless but what really surprised me was some calculations I made after practice had finished. I found that at the moment, based on times from FP1 and 2, the entire grid is covered on average by just 1.077 seconds, which must mean that upgrades coming from teams pretty much every race, 2009 has the closest field in F1 history.

  • Lukeh24/04/2009 at 17:37

Nope, Triple H and….. that guy who also only wears black pants.

  • chris evans24/04/2009 at 17:46

really? wow. do you get sound effects? i’m asking seriously. i’d like to hear about it.

Yup, there is a speaker in each gun that plays a shotgun sound when you fire and a 'ping' if you get a hit. The guns are roughly the same size and weight as a real shotgun too so other than the recoil, it's surprisingly realistic (or so I am told, having never fired a real shotgun myself) .

  • Scott in Italy24/04/2009 at 17:47

there were a fair few experimental things, or at least changes..but i wasn't around much to keep attention. anyone else?

McLaren front wing McLaren diffuser Force India diffuser *+ other bits still in customs* Toyota front wing

Toyota brought that front wing either last race or Malaysia. It's not new.

  • Scott in Italy24/04/2009 at 17:49

I am intrigued. I'll have to keep a look out for it. i just don't think it's the thing around here...

It's got new parts on it. The main parts of the wing are the same.

  • Nathan24/04/2009 at 17:49

OK thanks Im in Bahrain but no Kangaroo TV so not much info on that front. I spoke to a mechanic at force india he said there was a new floor and sidepods. When I asked if he thought it would make an improvement he just said "No"

If you mean the elements which extend inwards from the endplates, they had that from Malaysia.

you're not hanging out with Bernie or something are you? You sound like you're becoming quite a figure out on the paddock. Any other gossip from the track?

    Ha ha, Fake Bernie says:

Well I have to say the Sakir circuit is awesome. Well maintained, not too big, lots of entertainment, easy access. It is now my favourite circuit from a spectators point of view. As for the TV viewer I'm not sure yet.

I didn't to see a lot of the racing today, but it's hard to get used to looking at sand. Have they spray painted any of it green like they did once before? (or have I made this up in my mind?)

It's really weird watching the cars disappear out into the dessert. I think before they did spray something on the sand to stop it from blowing onto the track. Not sure what it was. They seem to have decorated it all quiet well.

Does anyone seriously think Mercedes will sell or reduce it’s share in McLaren?

In February Mercedes had a meeting and it was only narrowly voted (one vote) to continue participating in F1

"management board of Mercedes-Benz was only one vote away from announcing the German manufacturer's withdrawal from Formula 1 this week. Following Daimler AG chief executive Dieter Zetsche's proposal to submit the company's participation in Formula 1 to a vote, the permission to continue was granted with 3 votes for and 2 against"

Does Joe read any F1 blogs?

  • chris evans24/04/2009 at 20:02

haven’t read yet, but did you mention the bmw game?

Nope. It's more about how and why the quality of games has got better and better since launch, so that they are now reaching the point where they can rival those on DS.

  • Flibster24/04/2009 at 20:03

Mercedes is haemorrhaging a billion dollars a month!

So $200 million (ish) a year for worldwide advertising in F1 is a drop in the ocean.

  • Jackie24/04/2009 at 20:03

Does Joe read any F1 blogs?

apart from sidepodcast? .. that's a good one

ahh cool. i read shortly. am interested if the touch will split and become more of a gaming device than the phone.

  • chris evans24/04/2009 at 20:05

The touch is certainly more accessible as a gaming device (no contracts to sign) but I imagine they will always both have the same software.

the touch has better hardware doesn't it? due to less internal bits.

Slightly better processor, but not a great deal faster I think

Ah, didn't know that. I still doubt they will make iPod touch specific games though, I imagine there are far more downloads on iPhone.

  • Bassano Clapper24/04/2009 at 20:09

I thought they were both the same (other than the phone bits obviously). I may be wrong though.

The primary difference is a faster processor: The second-generation iPod touch has a 532 MHz processor. The iPhone, iPhone 3G, and first-generation iPod touch all have 412 MHz processors

Damn, China. I hate these new races.

  • Scott Woodwiss24/04/2009 at 20:17

    she said… “where was it”?

    Here in the comments:

Plenty of on-track action to keep us amused, with a lot of drivers finding it difficult to stay on the road, especially at Turn 10. McLaren seem to be making further strides towards the front, and Rosberg retains his title of King of Free Practice. Ferrari had another torrid time while my new favourite Sutil certainly made an impact in the vastly improved Force India. Piquet also proved my point that he’s quite useless but what really surprised me was some calculations I made after practice had finished. I found that at the moment, based on times from FP1 and 2, the entire grid is covered on average by just 1.077 seconds, which must mean that upgrades coming from teams pretty much every race, 2009 has the closest field in F1 history.

Ditto. I watched it often about 5 years ago. Now it sends my mind into mush. One of those games it is enjoyable/frustrating (in equal measure) when you play it, but is boring as hell on telly.

Ditto. I watched it often about 5 years ago. Now it sends my mind into mush. One of those games it is enjoyable/frustrating (in equal measure) when you play it, but is boring as hell on telly.

I find it fascinating. I love watching the finals that go on into the early hours of the morning.

I had a letter today from the Domain Renewal Group. Apparently, my .com domain name is due for renewal (in August). They want to know if I'd like to renew my domain via them at a cost of just £20 for 1 year, or £65 for 5 years.

Gosh, that's tempting. Or I could simply renew with my existing provider for just £8.17 per year instead and save myself some money.

  • littlepurplegoth24/04/2009 at 21:27

Watchlists, basically you have edited a page so you are watching what other people are editing, so you are getting loads of emails of people which have edited the pages you have previously edited. You cna turn it off in the settings.

It's the usual case of take an interesting piece of history and run with it until it makes a good plot for a game. It actually looks like a really cool concept.
