Sunday has arrived and it is race day in Australia. We were slightly confused by the fact that people were arriving at the circuit before we had even managed to get to bed, and when you add in a stupid daylight savings time change in the UK, we're not sure what time it is at all. Never mind, though, here are some things we're talking about:

  • Ollie has written a great post about the adjustable ride height concept. Yet again, we're faced with another loophole in the regulations, and it paints the Ferrari and Red Bull speed in a whole new light. I wonder if the FIA anticipated the number of concerns that would arise from banning refuelling - perhaps it's not as simple as they hoped.
  • Schumacher has asked the FIA for clarification on blocking, wondering if things have changed since he's been away. I'm not sure we've seen traffic issues like we did yesterday for a long time, so it's not just Schumi who is concerned. Pedro de la Rosa in particular made it his mission to get in everyone's way, so he was reprimanded. I dread to think what's going to happen in the race.
  • F1 Wolf has been posting loads and loads of pictures from his time at Melbourne - so far we have shots from Friday and Saturday. It's good to see some nice close ups of the liveries, and I might start using them as a reference.

That's all for now. We'll be recording a show later, but it won't be live as we're not quite ready for that yet. Soon! Don't forget to call in your thoughts about the race, though: 0121 28 87225. I'll see you in the comments.

I have been thinking about Red Bull's alleged ride height control system. I am sure Flibster said a couple of times that he used to work for a company that made a passive version of active suspension. Can't find the comments but that is basically what Red Bull are running allegedly

  • Alison28/03/2010 at 00:32

How are we all? Did we ever work out what time stuff was going on at?

  • Bassano28/03/2010 at 00:32

Do the rules forbid ride height adjustments?

I'm guessing there is enough woolliness to sneak in the odd questionable interpretation

Technically it is illegal but F1 rules being what they are it is probably possible

  • Bassano28/03/2010 at 00:33

    Why was there confusion?

I've sort of lost interest in the prerace babble and can always watch it later, so my alarm is set to 6.25, Hopefully enough time to wake up enough to drag myself downstairs to make a cuppa so I can have TV and desktop PC.. If I'm lazy I'll dozily watch in bed on iplayer like i did with quals.

While the early races are part and parcel of F1, I do think there could be more in South America, Brazil is at a good time. Or Iceland. Or Atlantis.

See if you can find a game with Thruxton on it. Even if the game version is not accurate you will learn more in 5 game laps than watching a hundred on board laps.

I can't find one anywhere, it's very annoying. I know all the circuits in the UK (pretty much) from playstation games, apart from thruxton!

Bernie is always on about Asian races being at a good time for Europe which is complete bull. Brazil and the US east coast is the perfect time zone

Ooh Thruxton? Brave.. fast.. :) I drove 6 laps there in a (revlimited) FF1600, I would've been scared in anything proper fast I think. say, like the Porsche Boxter doing passenger rides, was quite scary yet fun.. It was one of those 'experience' days. Do you know what you'll be driving?

ah didnt know there was a different. I have TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 and neither do

I hope you start in something smaller. On the experience day we learned the lines in a Rover 400 road car, then a MG TF, before getting in the FF

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 00:49

ah didnt know there was a different. I have TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 and neither do

I thought they were the same

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 00:50

ah didnt know there was a different. I have TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 and neither do

There was the original TOCA series from 1997 and 1998 which featured the BTCC (hence why they are all called TOCA despite later games having no TOCA series in...). I played TOCA 2 a HUGE amount so I knew Thruxton's lines quite well, and even back then the tracks were modelled reasonably accurately

When I was in the TF the instructor complimented me on my throttle application. I didn't tell him I'd learned it by pretending to be James Thompson in TOCA2 for however many hours :)

The game has drawbacks (easy mode is too easy) but when you get the hang of its quirks it is one of the best ever made IMO.

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 02:02

In fairness had it been Croft or a more powerful car I'd have struggled more. But as a guide to know your bearings it is pretty good. I don't think many other games have Thruxton in.

BTCC seems a bit pants this year else I'd be tempted to go back, its up against the Malaysian GP but if Melbourne is as bad as Bahrain was I wouldn't be all too bothered about that (can always watch when home).

No Vauxhall or SEAT.. a new spec engine.. little continuity. BTCC seems quite good at promoting a Clio or Cupra (as was) driver for a year then losing them and keeping some older guy with money.. state of the economy I guess.

well even turks has moved so its what you can get i guess, its a shame manufacturers are gone but this year we've still got honda, chevy, ford, seat, vauxhall, bmw and vw! loads of different types, a lack of manufactures dosent bother me hugely at the moment, they'll come back

I think they add legitimacy. I like the added number of car makes but I don't like the idea of moving away again from the WTC/ETC car formula.. that didn't work for very long last time.

I mean the BTC cars are still around so they are durable but I always think it should be possible for a team to enter their car in teh Euro Cup or a WTC round (or vice versa).

they're slowly moving towards a semi-spec series with different body work, i think as long as you accept its for entertainment rather than sport value it dosent bother me! night

Just realized something - if it's a wet race, then they're not required to change use both tyre compounds, right? Therefore, they're not required to do pitstops? Interesting... :D

That said, if the track starts to dry, they'll probably need to pit anyway.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 02:45

Hey Crid. :D I'm killing time waiting for F1 by watching UFC. Good matches so far.

  • Crid -Los Angeles28/03/2010 at 03:56

I work at a satellite tv distribution company, and saw that stuff on the monitors on the way out of work tonight. Too much blood on the mat!

I like F1, it's safer! Just ask Kubica.

    Or Massa!

  • Crid -Los Angeles28/03/2010 at 04:00

Well... Yeah. But that Hungary accident still scared the hell out of me. Soon enough there's going to an accident that kills someone in F1, some beautiful young father like Massa, and I'm going to feel shame for enjoying a blood sport, like I did when my hero Donahue died.

  • Journeyer28/03/2010 at 04:02

It's always possible, sadly. But one thing that F1 has not come up short in the last 15 years is safety. They've tried their hardest to stay ahead of the curve in that regard, and no one has died at an F1 weekend since 2001.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 04:04

Well... Yeah. But that Hungary accident still scared the hell out of me. Soon enough there's going to an accident that kills someone in F1, some beautiful young father like Massa, and I'm going to feel shame for enjoying a blood sport, like I did when my hero Donahue died.

There will be another fatal accident. That is a certainty. I just hope it is not a car launching into a crowd somewhere.

  • Crid -Los Angeles28/03/2010 at 04:05

Much to be grateful for! True, true.

    But let's not kid ourselves.

I was appalled by the violence of the Nakajima wreck at Interlagos... And by how much I admired Kobayashi when it was over. "Naughty", Brundle called it.

I hope Australia is better for my Fantasy Racers team than Bahrain was. I seemed to have picked up the worst F1 drivers in Bahrain: Pk jr, Badoer, Nakajima, jr. and mr. C!

  • Amy28/03/2010 at 05:15

Not sure a jenson flag would work. Finnish flag gets heikkis attention as ive only seen one other one! Sky looks ok at the moment but lots of cloud around so forecast of rain is probably correct. My guess is it wont be really heavy though!

I am probably in the minority, but I don't mind one race a year in the middle east. It's at least a interesting challenge with the heat. That it seems the governments do care. I just wish it wasn't at the expense of existing races.

  • Lukeh28/03/2010 at 05:16

Agreed. They could have a race on the moon for all I care, so long as the track is decent and the locals are behind it ;)

  • Jordan F128/03/2010 at 05:22

At least in valencia's defence if a driver gets bored while on the track there is a possibility that he can crash into a wall and end his race....

In Bahrain or Abu Dhabi a drive that end up off the track has thousands of miles of desert to turn his car around and get back onto the track unless he ends up in Iraq and finds a land mine.... Otherwise I can not image any way of damaging the car for an off-road trip....... :P

:) i had about 5hours sleep.. but kept waking up almost each hour, not out of choice, but i was checking the time just to make sure i hadn't missed the race.

I had a bit of that... After being late last year for Australia (last year I turned the tv on during the parade lap warm up lap).

i had that 'start of the season' buzz today. i even debated getting changed so i could wear my brawn t shirt.. then decided not too. i'll have a shower and get dressed in a moment... but what shirt to wear?.. my brawn one, or my honda one? hehe

  • RubberGoat28/03/2010 at 09:37

I went to bed at 11 but lost an hour because of the clocks getting changed. As it turns out, the time I woke up this morning is the same that I do during the week, so I don't feel too bad...

  • lou28/03/2010 at 09:38

Timo says he would have had enough fuel. poor him :( His official facebook page says

'Made it until lap 44. Then the rear wheel suspension on the left quit and we had to resign. There would have been enough fuel, never mind. All in all a quite chaotic race with a lot of drop outs. Now there's a lot of work for Malaysia.'

That segment was pretty fantastic. A lot less awkward than the interview thing from Australia too. Mclaren get a bit of a hard rep personally, but I think that was more because of Ron Dennis than anything...

well, I did see Martin in the paddock. But I didn't talk to him then.

  • lou28/03/2010 at 11:28

Ok, it was on Friday, but still.....

oh the paddock/pit tour?... see i was thinking today. :)

  • Amy28/03/2010 at 11:28

I hope the Renault guys smiled nicely at Alfonso.....

a van of Renault guys came past while Alonso was signing and one of them rolled down the window and said something to him in Spanish, the only word I understood was "Fernando"

  • lou28/03/2010 at 11:29

well, I did see Martin in the paddock. But I didn't talk to him then.

you are now gonna be able to do more name dropping than mr c! :)

  • Lukeh28/03/2010 at 11:30

See, now I've seen people mention Mclaren are favouring Jenson over Lewis because of today's strategy messup for Lewis... yeesh! It's blah blah blah all over again, boo.

  • Amy28/03/2010 at 11:30

you are now gonna be able to do more name dropping than mr c! :)

its things like this that convince my mum I'm going to get a job in F1. She doesn't understand that hundreds of people go through the paddock at every race and the people you meet don't actually remember you when you leave.

a LOT, indeed. Also, Jenson's cap seems like it's spelled Jensen because of how his signature is positioned.

Yeah I know!! I find that really annoying.

  • lou28/03/2010 at 11:41

wow.. i'm really slow, but that's the first time he's ever won outside of brackley.. and without celebrating with Shov, Bono, and Rubens.. aw bad times.

  • paul28/03/2010 at 11:42

I notice Lewis wasn't made to sit in the photo and pretend to be happy like Heikki used to be

  • Amy28/03/2010 at 11:44

I notice Lewis wasn't made to sit in the photo and pretend to be happy like Heikki used to be

I was just thinking on my way home 'gosh, when was the last time Lewis's team mate won a race instead of him?' and the answer came to me as 2007 because as much as it pains me, Heikki's win totally didn't count.

I wanted to get a picture of her and John for you but the only time I saw them was at night and because they didn't come near the fence it was too dark to catch them. Jenson turned up today after we had already left the paddock entrance because I had seen Catherine and Pamela had seen Christian and the crowd was crushing us.

I found it a bit odd on twitter (I feel like im complaining loads about twitter today) that during the forum, there were red bull fans complaining about the amount of mclaren stuff. Considering most weeks it's in a red bull motorhome, with a red bull employee talking to other red bull employees...

TV viewers in the UK should look out for an AT&T Williams feature on the BBC’s coverage of next weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix. The British broadcaster is tracking a car part from the FW32 across the globe as it travels from Albert Park to Grove to be checked, and then out to Malaysia in time for Sepang’s first practice session on Friday.

alonso thinks schumi is a rival?

Now, I took 12 points to Vettel, to Michael and to some of the main rivals for the championship. So it has been a much better race in terms of points than Bahrain, if you compare with your main competitor.

tend to be 1/3rd or 1/2 crowds - the circuits in the US are often season tickets jobs (especially if they have NASCAR), so for many customers it wouldn't be a big loss

A little project I've been working on during the weekend:

    http://fototest2008.blogspot.com/2010/03/js.html

It should adapt to the size of the browser's window, and if you click 'restart size', it reloads the images and links to match any change on it (if you maximized it or went full screen, or changed the size in any way).

I guess I can now get rid of flash for my Picasa albums... :D

ps: code is still a mess, a week ago 'lightbox', 'google API' and 'javascript' were strange words to me... ;-)

Haha, I'm an early riser anyway. Up at 5am 2-3 days a week as it is to go galavanting round the country for work, so the 06:55 alarm call today was something of a lie in, clock change or not!

    We just did.

    Good work!

Andy - If you listerned to the race coverage and if one of commentators is/was Legard, then how do you know for sure that either Hamilton lapped the field more times than there are laps of the race distance or that Hamilton was the only driver in the race?

Just my impression of him. I particularly dislike Legard's Hamilton-love when Button is in front of Hamilton.....

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 20:56

Not that i'm discounting Button, he did a very good job, but I think Hamilton was quicker and very unlucky with strategy

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:00

I didn't notice him being more Hamilton-focused today, Hamilton was the best driver out there today though.

Button was the best driver today. He was the only one who made the right call on tyres and that was the most important factor in winning the race. Lewis was great to watch and what he did with his car was incredible but Jenson did the better job without taking as many risks or wearing out his equipment so much

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 21:01

Button took a big risk and it worked for him. Vettel's brake problems gifted him the win.

Not even close Jon. Button drove way too much of a controlled race, Alonso had more of an exciting race coming from further behind and getting further ahead of Hamilton and the same problems that affected Alonso also affected Hamilton - namely something called the "Massa Monorail....".

  • RubberGoat28/03/2010 at 21:03

I didn't notice him being more Hamilton-focused today, Hamilton was the best driver out there today though.

    Jon,

    Read my consistency analysis: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/driver-consistency-australia

Even taking the pit stops out Button was consistently faster. Hamilton's fastest lap was slightly better, that's all...

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:03

Button was the best driver today. He was the only one who made the right call on tyres and that was the most important factor in winning the race. Lewis was great to watch and what he did with his car was incredible but Jenson did the better job without taking as many risks or wearing out his equipment so much

He made the right calls at the right time, Lewis was faster at many points across the race, they didn't bring him in because he'd worn his tyres down, they bought him in because others had and they'd gone faster, whitmarsh said so

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:05

Even taking the pit stops out Button was consistently faster. Hamilton's fastest lap was slightly better, that's all...

But he was stuck behind Kubica for ages, and then Alonso who was stuck behind Massa, his average was going to be down.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 21:06

namely something called the "Massa Monorail....".

I hear these things are awful loud.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:06

I hear these things are awful loud.

Jenson did the better job by a long way. Lewis looked faster to me for most of the race but the object is not to go fast. The object is to win and as JYS would say to win at the slowest speed possible. Button for a lot of the time after Lewis's second stop was 2 seconds a lap slower and protecting his equipment.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:07

Not even close Jon. Button drove way too much of a controlled race, Alonso had more of an exciting race coming from further behind and getting further ahead of Hamilton and the same problems that affected Alonso also affected Hamilton - namely something called the "Massa Monorail....".

Alonso was behind until Mclaren bought him in, then he caught right back up and then couldnt pass

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:07

Average lap times are totally meaningless.

  • Jordan F128/03/2010 at 21:08

Andy Taylor said namely something called the "Massa Monorail....".

Not really. They are just as loud as Barrichello Barricades.....

But was also out in front and had made the right call earlier on, Lewis was chasing a pack down, you cant compare them

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 21:08

The object is to win and as JYS would say to win at the slowest speed possible.

It's also the secret of winning at Scalextric

  • RubberGoat28/03/2010 at 21:08

Even when they back up your argument?

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:09

little simpsons reference you've missed there Jordan ;)

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:10

But was also out in front and had made the right call earlier on, Lewis was chasing a pack down, you cant compare them

I agree you can't compare them. One did what was needed to win the race and the other didn't. I think Lewis is the better driver but he was shown up by a smarter driver today

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:10

Even when they back up your argument?

In qualifying it makes sense, but when Hamilton was blocked by Massa for many laps and Kubica for many laps, it brings down his average lap time.

If 2 drivers are both in clear air for a race then you can compare them, but if one is and one isnt you cant compare them.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:11

I agree you can't compare them. One did what was needed to win the race and the other didn't. I think Lewis is the better driver but he was shown up by a smarter driver today

Thats what I was saying :D Jenson made the right call but in terms of speed Lewis was faster, but after his early call, Jenson didnt need to go all out.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:11

Even when they back up your argument?

I haven't read the whole post but when you have cars that are stuck behind cars that are 2 seconds a lap slower then their average is no reflection of performance.

You may be able to extract something useful from the information but I am not sure what

  • RubberGoat28/03/2010 at 21:12

Even when they back up your argument?

In qualifying it makes sense, but when Hamilton was blocked by Massa for many laps and Kubica for many laps, it brings down his average lap time.

If 2 drivers are both in clear air for a race then you can compare them, but if one is and one isnt you cant compare them.

Then why are all the drivers so close on average? I think the average laptimes do show something valuable and that is how consistent they were.

True, it helped that Jenson was out in front, but he was able to drive at a very quick pace extremely consistently - something we know Hamilton cannot do well. So Button was better today because he made his strategy work better for him ;)

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:13

Thats what I was saying :D Jenson made the right call but in terms of speed Lewis was faster, but after his early call, Jenson didnt need to go all out.

The object is to win. Being faster than anyone else and not winning is bad driving.

  • Jordan F128/03/2010 at 21:13

Steven Roy said Average lap times are totally meaningless.

The same argument can be made for "Fastest lap time" too. Look at how many times KImi was able to finally dial in that god awful Ferrari a few year back... about 10 laps from the end of each race you just knew he was going to set the fastest lap time from near the bottom of the race runners still on the lead lap.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:14

True, it helped that Jenson was out in front, but he was able to drive at a very quick pace extremely consistently - something we know Hamilton cannot do well. So Button was better today because he made his strategy work better for him ;)

Lewis can't drive consistent fast laps? SInce when.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:14

The object is to win. Being faster than anyone else and not winning is bad driving.

No its not, he couldnt overtake Kubica and couldnt overtake Alonso/Massa, his team called him in for a stop that in hindsight was wrong. Thats why he lost

  • RubberGoat28/03/2010 at 21:15

We all know he chews up the tyres - fror example Turkey 08...

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:16

We all know he chews up the tyres - fror example Turkey 08...

Didn't today! Was consistently lapping faster and faster until he hit a car he couldnt overtake

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:16

I have always said fastest lap time means absolutely nothing. In most cases the guy who wins the race is not going flat out at the end when the track is at its fastest and fuel is low so fastest lap goes to someone either by pure chance or someone like Kimi trying to make the point that he was fast but it took so long for the car to be driveable for him. He was doing them tp put pressure on the team to sort the car.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:18

No its not, he couldnt overtake Kubica and couldnt overtake Alonso/Massa, his team called him in for a stop that in hindsight was wrong. Thats why he lost

The team didn't call Jenson in. He told them he was coming in three laps early. Lewis has to learn to question the team.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:19

We all know he chews up the tyres - fror example Turkey 08...

That was because the tyres were just too soft. He can do consistent laps if he has the equipment. That is a one off that has never happened in any of his other races.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 21:20

The team didn't call Jenson in. He told them he was coming in three laps early. Lewis has to learn to question the team.

Ah but that was the switch from Wets to Drys, Jenson really needed to make that decision, Lewis was going from slick to slick, so in reality its a strategy call and not a 'feel' call as Jenson did.

  • lou28/03/2010 at 21:21

Button took a big risk and it worked for him. Vettel's brake problems gifted him the win.

his risk whether he would have achieved 1st or 2nd was still amazing and i think i would have been just as happy with 2nd... well okay i'm maybe a tiny bit happier now...

  • lou28/03/2010 at 21:21

I think there is, Jenson wasnt happy on inters, he felt there was enough grip for slicks. Great move.

The team tell Lewis that new slicks are going to make him go a second a lap faster, you're gonna come in.

The team tell Lewis that new slicks are going to make him go a second a lap faster, you're gonna come in.

Being a second a lap quicker is fine unless it puts you in a position where you have to drive 2 seconds a lap quicker to get back to where you were in the first place.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2010 at 21:27

no... i'm on holidays as of friday. 3 weeks off :)

Being a second a lap quicker is fine unless it puts you in a position where you have to drive 2 seconds a lap quicker to get back to where you were in the first place.

I think at that point they thought the others would come in too and so they could jump them at this point. Turns out they were wrong. All im saying is, Lewis was fast but strategies screwed him. He was in third behind Kubica, they must have believed it.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 21:28

I'm now watching the race on iPlayer and wishing I was listening to Ant and David.

or a moment when you speak so quickly it's actually impossible to hear you?... or did you simply throw orange over Christine?...

Hmmm. It's a good job you're not in my rankings, Mr C, or you'd be lower than a certain MSC.

Hmmm. It's a good job you're not in my rankings, Mr C, or you'd be lower than a certain MSC.

Does Jamie get a gazillion extra points this week for being totally awesome and not letting him past for like...a year (felt like it!!) i promised him a coffee if he could finish in front of him, shame he finished behind. I quite fancied a coffee with Jamie.

since when have the rankings been related to on track performances?

  • RG28/03/2010 at 21:58

Add a few caps locks in there and about 8 exclamation marks, you may be on the right tracks.

I mean MR C looks a bit like MSC - there's just one letter different and the different letters are next to one another in the alphabet.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 21:59

since when have the rankings been related to on track performances?

Surely Christine can make an exception for keeping MSC behind you for multiple laps

I think that Mr C is much taller and is unlikely to wear all white outfits

It would be quite ironic if the champioship winner this year isnt the person with the most wins. #welldonefia

Maybe, but a DNF or two from the others and they're in the front again. It's not more or less rewarding than last year, the percentages are almost the same.

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 22:20

No they brought it in to give something to the new teams

Haven't got around to playing with itunes yet

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 22:23

No they brought it in to give something to the new teams

but it only gave points to 2 more people?

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 22:24

but it only gave points to 2 more people?

yes, but points mean prizes - in the form of TV monies

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 22:24

No they brought it in to give something to the new teams

but it only gave points to 2 more people?

Yes. They could've done an IRL-like system and given points down the field if they'd really wanted to be fair.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 22:24

yes, but points mean prizes - in the form of TV monies

hmm. not convinced. hteres still 14 cars not getting points.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 22:25

Yes. They could've done an IRL-like system and given points down the field if they'd really wanted to be fair.

thats how i'd have done it if i was trying to give everyone points

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2010 at 22:25

hmm. not convinced. hteres still 14 cars not getting points.

What do you want, a point for turning up?

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 22:25

yes, but points mean prizes - in the form of TV monies

hmm. not convinced. hteres still 14 cars not getting points.

But those extra two places will mean the middle order are sorted more fairly in the final standing, for the drivers at least.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 22:26

What do you want, a point for turning up?

no i want it how it was before, but if the point of the new system is to give new teams points, you do exactly that. the new teams arent going to score a point this year unless ALOT of people fall off

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 22:27

That's short-term thinking. The new teams will only be this slow for a year or so. The points system will likely be this way for 5 or 6 years or more.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2010 at 22:28

That's short-term thinking. The new teams will only be this slow for a year or so. The points system will likely be this way for 5 or 6 years or more.

true but even Force India took many years to get to the standard they are now, they must be thinking very long term

  • Pat W28/03/2010 at 22:33

true but even Force India took many years to get to the standard they are now, they must be thinking very long term

Possibly. Its as much about the rest of the midfield (or back of it) too.

  • James28/03/2010 at 22:36

I was also looking at the points standings. Red Bull might have great race pace but their chances of a drivers title are screwed already IMO..

No one is going to run away with the championship this year, the leader is going change multiple times. Provided Red Bull can get their realiability issues sorted, a couple of race wins regardless of what others do will bring them right back into.

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2010 at 22:43

    true but even Force India took many years to get to the standard they are now, they must be thinking very long term {Comment #883}

Only one-and-two-thirds seasons (they scored a point in their penultimate race as Spyker (Fuji 2007) and Spa 2009 was almost exactly two-thirds of the way into the second season after that). I know it felt a lot longer than that, but changing the points system every year just makes everyone involved in the changes feel silly. Admittedly, it's going to take the new teams a season to get to where Force India were in the first place, but that still leaves significant points possible to the savvy new team by 2012. And if Concorde is similar now to what it was last time, they'll get some TV money simply for finishing races (scaled according to position at certain points of the race).

Right now it looks like Ferraris vs McLarens with RBR taking points off them when they can finish. That 4 will get whittled down with a retirement or two. It'll be interesting to see who's left standing.

The championship could go anywhere yet. Just wait till other teams do what ever Red Bull are doing to get the low ride height in quali.

I saw the first yesterday. two things: 1) it was very good, 2) I can't believe you have that image quality on open TV
