Sunday has arrived and it is race day in Australia. We were slightly confused by the fact that people were arriving at the circuit before we had even managed to get to bed, and when you add in a stupid daylight savings time change in the UK, we're not sure what time it is at all. Never mind, though, here are some things we're talking about:
- Ollie has written a great post about the adjustable ride height concept. Yet again, we're faced with another loophole in the regulations, and it paints the Ferrari and Red Bull speed in a whole new light. I wonder if the FIA anticipated the number of concerns that would arise from banning refuelling - perhaps it's not as simple as they hoped.
- Schumacher has asked the FIA for clarification on blocking, wondering if things have changed since he's been away. I'm not sure we've seen traffic issues like we did yesterday for a long time, so it's not just Schumi who is concerned. Pedro de la Rosa in particular made it his mission to get in everyone's way, so he was reprimanded. I dread to think what's going to happen in the race.
- F1 Wolf has been posting loads and loads of pictures from his time at Melbourne - so far we have shots from Friday and Saturday. It's good to see some nice close ups of the liveries, and I might start using them as a reference.
That's all for now. We'll be recording a show later, but it won't be live as we're not quite ready for that yet. Soon! Don't forget to call in your thoughts about the race, though: 0121 28 87225. I'll see you in the comments.
iiiiit's race day!
Strewth, so it is :)
karun, signing autographs: http://twitpic.com/1be4wp
I'm not going to go and read back through, but what time (BST) does the race start tomorrow?
6am show for a 7am race
countdown too: http://sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
here's a countdown: http://sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
oops, dupe. ignore that :)
crowds lining up: http://twitpic.com/1be6z9
When I see pics like that, I wonder how they get so many people to the track at Montreal via the Metro
Many thanks. See you in a few hours :)
Cheers Andy
Hello. I have escaped from work before nightmare clock change time!! :D
Our computers have the BST equivalent of the millennium bug.
Hi Alison
Hello there.
I have been thinking about Red Bull's alleged ride height control system. I am sure Flibster said a couple of times that he used to work for a company that made a passive version of active suspension. Can't find the comments but that is basically what Red Bull are running allegedly
How are we all? Did we ever work out what time stuff was going on at?
Do the rules forbid ride height adjustments?
I'm guessing there is enough woolliness to sneak in the odd questionable interpretation
Mr C put a countdown in the FBFB so we don't need to worry about timezons
Lights out 7am BST
Show begins at 6
Technically it is illegal but F1 rules being what they are it is probably possible
Why was there confusion?
There was major confusioning going on. I just thought I'd let you all work out what was happening then copy you all :P
I guess I'm a little more used to it
We use both GMT & BST on our systems at work between now and October
In 3 weeks time I am taking my ARDS test, read all about it here
#blug
I've sort of lost interest in the prerace babble and can always watch it later, so my alarm is set to 6.25, Hopefully enough time to wake up enough to drag myself downstairs to make a cuppa so I can have TV and desktop PC.. If I'm lazy I'll dozily watch in bed on iplayer like i did with quals.
While the early races are part and parcel of F1, I do think there could be more in South America, Brazil is at a good time. Or Iceland. Or Atlantis.
See if you can find a game with Thruxton on it. Even if the game version is not accurate you will learn more in 5 game laps than watching a hundred on board laps.
I can't find one anywhere, it's very annoying. I know all the circuits in the UK (pretty much) from playstation games, apart from thruxton!
Bernie is always on about Asian races being at a good time for Europe which is complete bull. Brazil and the US east coast is the perfect time zone
TOCA?
Will have a look at TOCA1, but TOCA 2 and 3 dont
I'd prefer an early afternoon race in Aus and stay up for it rather than a twighlight race
Toca1 does! Thanks!
Ooh Thruxton? Brave.. fast.. :) I drove 6 laps there in a (revlimited) FF1600, I would've been scared in anything proper fast I think. say, like the Porsche Boxter doing passenger rides, was quite scary yet fun.. It was one of those 'experience' days. Do you know what you'll be driving?
Porsche or MX8 :D
TOCA2 definitely does. TOCA Race Driver 2 may not.
Agreed, the ratings are always big for Canada and Brazil
ah didnt know there was a different. I have TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 and neither do
I hope you start in something smaller. On the experience day we learned the lines in a Rover 400 road car, then a MG TF, before getting in the FF
I thought they were the same
There was the original TOCA series from 1997 and 1998 which featured the BTCC (hence why they are all called TOCA despite later games having no TOCA series in...). I played TOCA 2 a HUGE amount so I knew Thruxton's lines quite well, and even back then the tracks were modelled reasonably accurately
£3.49 on Amazon

There can't be a cheaper way to learn a track
cheers
When I was in the TF the instructor complimented me on my throttle application. I didn't tell him I'd learned it by pretending to be James Thompson in TOCA2 for however many hours :)
The game has drawbacks (easy mode is too easy) but when you get the hang of its quirks it is one of the best ever made IMO.
In fairness had it been Croft or a more powerful car I'd have struggled more. But as a guide to know your bearings it is pretty good. I don't think many other games have Thruxton in.
thats hte first ive seen with it in!
Right the clock on my netbook has just jumped forward. I was on this timezone the other day but in another country. My brain is confused. Think I'll have a snooze...
The other thing is the actual real BTCC round is on the 4th and is live with all the support races on ITV4, you should watch as much of those as you can
ah yes thanks, i went to that a few years ago, cracking racing
yeah, I've been a few times. my local track, as much as i have one :)
BTCC seems a bit pants this year else I'd be tempted to go back, its up against the Malaysian GP but if Melbourne is as bad as Bahrain was I wouldn't be all too bothered about that (can always watch when home).
ooh no, im quite excited about it this year, so many new teams, should be great!
No Vauxhall or SEAT.. a new spec engine.. little continuity. BTCC seems quite good at promoting a Clio or Cupra (as was) driver for a year then losing them and keeping some older guy with money.. state of the economy I guess.
well even turks has moved so its what you can get i guess, its a shame manufacturers are gone but this year we've still got honda, chevy, ford, seat, vauxhall, bmw and vw! loads of different types, a lack of manufactures dosent bother me hugely at the moment, they'll come back
I think they add legitimacy. I like the added number of car makes but I don't like the idea of moving away again from the WTC/ETC car formula.. that didn't work for very long last time.
I mean the BTC cars are still around so they are durable but I always think it should be possible for a team to enter their car in teh Euro Cup or a WTC round (or vice versa).
anyway.. must sleep :)
they're slowly moving towards a semi-spec series with different body work, i think as long as you accept its for entertainment rather than sport value it dosent bother me! night
yeah that is a shame
but then im not sure S2000 works on a national level, especially with no manufacturers. the budgets are just too high
Heikki said "nice flag" to me this morning. :D then he signed it again. I also got some pictures of catherine so i am very happy.
WHAAAT?! Insanity. How did you do it??
Morning, folks.
Heikki said "nice flag" this morning then signed it again. Got some pics of catherine too :D
Don't worry, Amy, it posted the first time you tried it. ;)
Ooh it told me that comment didnt go through. Sorry!
BTW, Wolf says it's raining there now?
Also saw the bbc. I said "hi jake" and everyone else was yelling for him too. No love for lee so i said "hi lee!" as well :D
Yes its raining
From Mr Gascoyne:
FWIW, we've never had a wet F1 race in Melbourne yet... :D
Ooooh! Drizzle? Or proper rain?
Drizzle but almost proper rain
Most interesting... Hoping there will be more of that in the race... :D
What else have you been up to today?
Just standing around waiting to see people again. Pam got a picture with horner so she is happy. I said good luck to whitmarsh. Schumi signed again but only for about 2 people
I am very excited for your guest post. Hehehe! :D
Just realized something - if it's a wet race, then they're not required to change use both tyre compounds, right? Therefore, they're not required to do pitstops? Interesting... :D
That said, if the track starts to dry, they'll probably need to pit anyway.
I was going to get some sleep but somehow I never actually got to bed. Guess I will sleep after the race
Amy,
Did you know Heikki got locked out of his hotel room and had nowhere to go?
http://tweetphoto.com/16012646
I can't ever remember a set of wet tyres running the full race distance. I guess it must have happened at sometime
I did but by the time I got home he was back in. Catherine is looking so so so thin.
Salo, Monaco 1997, off the top of my head. And that was during the refuelling era!
Imagine being 13 and phoning NASA for help with your schoolwork and imagine your schoolwork was on car aerodynamics.
I had a deprived childhood.

I like that. We must try and find one for all the races in future
Twitpic from Chandhok showing how untidy Senna is http://twitpic.com/1bfl9g
Heikki tweeting rubens made me smile :D
I agree Steven. the idea just sprung to me.
Good middle-evening from California, America's Sexual Paradise. Also, we have great deals on real estate, just ask.
Hey Crid. :D I'm killing time waiting for F1 by watching UFC. Good matches so far.
I work at a satellite tv distribution company, and saw that stuff on the monitors on the way out of work tonight. Too much blood on the mat!
I like F1, it's safer! Just ask Kubica.
Or Massa!
Well... Yeah. But that Hungary accident still scared the hell out of me. Soon enough there's going to an accident that kills someone in F1, some beautiful young father like Massa, and I'm going to feel shame for enjoying a blood sport, like I did when my hero Donahue died.
It's always possible, sadly. But one thing that F1 has not come up short in the last 15 years is safety. They've tried their hardest to stay ahead of the curve in that regard, and no one has died at an F1 weekend since 2001.
There will be another fatal accident. That is a certainty. I just hope it is not a car launching into a crowd somewhere.
Much to be grateful for! True, true.
But let's not kid ourselves.
I was appalled by the violence of the Nakajima wreck at Interlagos... And by how much I admired Kobayashi when it was over. "Naughty", Brundle called it.
Heikki just took a picture of me!
That's the second time you have seen him today. How do you do it?
I am surounded by idiots. Oops, Webber fans in mean.
Yay! :D
Oh. we met Alan Jones and Mick Doohan earlier. hardly anyone was there
Evening all (or good morning!) Sounds like I'm not the only one wrapping up UFC before a night of F1!
I hope someone is keeping a list of all the people you have met
Two world champions all to yourselves? WOW. Awesome. :D
The drivers parade is on and his car was right in front of my seat so i got out the flag and he held up his phone like he was taking a picture then he gave the thumbs up. There is another finnish flag 2 rows down too!
He remembers you! ...I hope. :D
not quite to ourselves. O was amazed how few people wanted to see Jones
He is collecting evidence to get a restraining order
HAHA! :D
All drivers saying they like the atmosphere
Easy to say that when you just came from Bahrain. ;)
:D
Hey folks, just checking... formula1.com says the race is starting in 15mins. That's not right is it?
No.
1 hour 15 minutes.
not unless Wayne Grdner is doing it in an Austin Healy :-)
Nope. Blame DST change for that. ;)
Thought so, thanks. Was freaking out that the NZ coverage was delayed.
Crofty says rain on lap 39
http://twitter.com/CroftyF1/status/11179683996
Morning everyone.
I hope Australia is better for my Fantasy Racers team than Bahrain was. I seemed to have picked up the worst F1 drivers in Bahrain: Pk jr, Badoer, Nakajima, jr. and mr. C!
How can he be more specific than Lap 39?
Morning everyone :)
Morning Alex and Jordan
Morning Alex and Jordan.
Have you been to sleep yet Steven?
Alex Andronov said Morning everyone :)
Nope. I was going to but somehow it didn't happen.
Morning guys! Yaaay F1 :D
Hello
I guess you'll sleep in the daytime now - like, after the race?
whoop whooop whoop!
I made a fix
Maybe or I may just wait till tonight
Upside down, hanging from my feet?
HAHAHA! :D
Boy, would love to get some sleep here.....
Morning Alex, Journeyer......
Running Giggles radio today Alex?
I am very happy with my seat i am actually further from the podium but right in front of lewis garage and no pit gantry blocking my view as it is to left of me. Plus of course heikki in front of me was cherry on the top.
You don't want to fall asleep during Giggles Radio!
Yes
When I say tonight Imean like 2am ish
Excellent! Picture of the view, s'il vous plait?
Morning!
(is this the race thread?)
Amy seems to be sleeping more normal hours so it's good that you're keeping up the other options
BBC1 starting now
The Chain is go!
Have already tweeted one :)
Alex! A request:
I want that Queen song called "Radio Giggles"
It's not here yet sadly
I woke up in time!! yay!
Do you think the neighbours will object if I turn it up to 11
Same here! Woohoo!
:D
Heh :) I'll get that in on the R show, for sure.
Well done
morning! :D
EJ News - he has blue trousers today, expect to be woken up
EJ: "Too much milk for me" :D
I see Jenson winning in a Brawn :D
That prediction is RG-esque ;)
i don't need to see any more f1.. i'm now happy ;)
Clearly Mike Gascoyne is completely mad with his blue trousers update on twitter!
WET/DRY RACE???
Mr Kerb Ridersorted usout with some weather radar
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR023.loop.shtml
You just woke up, huh? Yup, looking that way.
I had a really weird moment then... Jake was listing previous winners who would know how to win here... When he mentioned Schumacher I thought, "why is he mentioning him... he's not... oh he's back".
Crofty forecast
http://twitter.com/CroftyF1/status/11179683996
that must have been terrifying for you :( i'm sorry.
Kiwis!
morning!
Fireflies on BBC? NOOOOOOOO! :(
They should have interviewed amy!
Chandok is tweeting about meeting Travolta. RACING Karun racing
I wanna go to the GP! it looks awesome!!!
Morning Rocket. :)
Morning. I guess this is your first live race with us
morning!!! :)
I know!!! Silly people
Morning!
That little boy, first one, sounded like Amy?
What, there was someone Amy wasn't stalking then? :D
Hello! I am so excited I have been up for over an hour!
lols at the 2nd kid, whitmarsh would be proud!
I thought that to...
#confidential
*yawn* moooorning :)
Amy met Heikki and got her flagged signed again. Then he took a pic of her on the driver parade
I have been up all night
Is that here disguise or something?
wow! :D
phew
good point
morning folks
oh lord... i love f1!
I can see the bbc crew
Ok Steven, you out-excited me!
For those of you here for your first live session I recommend http://sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
Yay for Heikki and his middle man-ness ;)
That jet is LOUD !!! N
Bbc now at vettels garage
I love this info from the track.
that.is.awesome! i neeeed a Jenson flag for Spa i think...
haaaaaaaaaaaaaave you met ted?
I am glad the formula 1 season is starting again. I'm not really sure about the inclusion of these 2 off season races between Brazil and Australia. There doesn't really seem much point.
#sorrynick ;)
Amy, what do you reckon the sky is going to do?
HEAR HEAR!
If i go, im so gettting an indian falg for karun!
I like that thinking
morning mr c. did you wake up without the added bonus of being covered in orange juice today? ;)
http://twitter.com/VirginRacing/statuses/11180513825
Like they were going to finish anyway!
Amy:
Please release Heikki, he has to return to his team to race in today's event....
seconded :)
I am becoming a fan. He tweeted this earlier
http://twitpic.com/1bfl9g
morning
i thought so too
money makes the world go round - unfortunately!
I wish Seb would tell us what he's pointing at, it's rude to point
Back home in time for the race.
Jake in the Red Bull pit. Who knew? ;)
I leave Sidepodcast for a couple of weeks and how the hell does this stuff happen?
Not sure a jenson flag would work. Finnish flag gets heikkis attention as ive only seen one other one! Sky looks ok at the moment but lots of cloud around so forecast of rain is probably correct. My guess is it wont be really heavy though!
I am probably in the minority, but I don't mind one race a year in the middle east. It's at least a interesting challenge with the heat. That it seems the governments do care. I just wish it wasn't at the expense of existing races.
Red Bull's car must be immense, S3 was quite messy for Seb
Excellent, thanks for the info, have an amazing time!!!!
I don't mind them being there either. I was quite happy with Bahrain till they changed the track
crofty says rain around lap 39.. so look out for that ;) maybe i should make a large sidepodcast (hearts) F1 flag that we can try get drivers to sign?
ooh yes!!!
Agreed. They could have a race on the moon for all I care, so long as the track is decent and the locals are behind it ;)
keep singapore - it attracts the crowds. let me visit shanghai first, then they can drop it. ;)
They were just consecutive. That's all. I too will leave it there. But to accuse me of racism is insane.
Track radio was saying rain before the race. I'm not so sure
Except that stupid green building.
I can't wait for your comparitive views after going there BTW...
Weather radar says clear for a while yet
http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR023.loop.shtml
Oh that building ruins the whole thing!
40 minutes to go...
woohoo - working now. apologies:
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/28/live-australia-2010-the-race/
PING!
I know time has gone back an hour Mr C but a whole day is absurd! ;)
Twitpic from Amy
http://twitpic.com/1bg5j8
Travolta meets Schumacher on the world feed... :D
Sorry again
Morning everyone.
That Travolta guy hasn't missed many meals lately hasn't he?
At least in valencia's defence if a driver gets bored while on the track there is a possibility that he can crash into a wall and end his race....
In Bahrain or Abu Dhabi a drive that end up off the track has thousands of miles of desert to turn his car around and get back onto the track unless he ends up in Iraq and finds a land mine.... Otherwise I can not image any way of damaging the car for an off-road trip....... :P
yaaaay = jenson giving out the prost love!!
:D
Oh, by the way, did everyone read those rumours about Bernie wanting a US Grand Prix around New York City? They where on the BBC's web site, so not quite GMM but, well there was a time when I would trust BBC news with my life....
Now I just trust BBC News with my wife....
A post ping for Fantasy Racers discussion: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/28/fantasy-racers-2010-who-could-have-predicted-that/
What a race. Turn 1 is the place to sit people
I will try to skype in a couple of hours
cheers sir :)
Back to the daily?
hullo
Sleep well Mr & Mrs C :)
I can't sleep cause i'm too excited :D
Good week for Lotus in the Championship
http://northernwaffler.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/kovalainen-extends-his-lead/
Same here, although I will happily lay in for a bit rather than get up :P
I went to bed at 8pm yesterday so I wouldn't be tired.
:) i had about 5hours sleep.. but kept waking up almost each hour, not out of choice, but i was checking the time just to make sure i hadn't missed the race.
I think i got sleep out of my system out of work yesterday!
I should have done something similar. One day I will learn
I had a bit of that... After being late last year for Australia (last year I turned the tv on during the parade lap warm up lap).
i had that 'start of the season' buzz today. i even debated getting changed so i could wear my brawn t shirt.. then decided not too. i'll have a shower and get dressed in a moment... but what shirt to wear?.. my brawn one, or my honda one? hehe
You don't have a rocket red one ready for the first victory?
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww never!!!
although i do like the look of their grey jumpers.. they look very comfy..
i think i'm adapting well to my team being destroyed... don't you? ;)
I went to bed at 11 but lost an hour because of the clocks getting changed. As it turns out, the time I woke up this morning is the same that I do during the week, so I don't feel too bad...
Timo says he would have had enough fuel. poor him :( His official facebook page says
'Made it until lap 44. Then the rear wheel suspension on the left quit and we had to resign. There would have been enough fuel, never mind. All in all a quite chaotic race with a lot of drop outs. Now there's a lot of work for Malaysia.'
Sooo close as well :(
Awww, poor Timo. 44 laps is good though :)
He'd have finished in Belgium...
I am writing my introduction for Giggles Radio
:)
Intriguingly interesting. You shall'nt be ill-advised in your intelligence for your introduction, I feel. ;)
That looks like maybe to me
:)
serously... the red would not suit me... at all. :)
Even wouldn't go that far with red. I mean, i like red, but i also like my eyesight!
I am eating a Magnum to celebrate victory
:D
I bet the atmosphere at the track was amazing. :)
totally was. Such a great GP. Although I don't think the other people in the stand liked me shouting at Webber about runniing in to Lewis all the time
hehehe :) how were Amy and the others? did they enjoy themselves?
Were there any crowd reactions to schumi struggling against di grassi and co?
I laughed. The lady next to me was not amused. Not sure they could tell the difference between a STR and RB though
I was a bit sad that they cheered Schumi passing a STR (finally)
boo! :P
That was me to Webber. BOOOO!
I should be nicer. He signed my hat
I think Amys day was made when Heikki took a photo :D
Aww, yay!
I hope everyone in the comments enjoyed the race. My iphone packed up about a minute before the start
:D
and when I saw Catherine!
:D i'm so pleased you've had a good weekend :)
oh it was soooo much better than last year. I don't know if 2011 will ever compare!
Sounds awesome :)
Mr Glock signed autographs on his way into the paddock this morning which was very nice because he'd snuck in and out the back way the last few days :)
Hehe, go Timo :)
so basically these two photos sum up my highlights of the day:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc07717-medium-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dscn1720-medium-jpg
my other highlight was Di Grassi attempting a move on Schumi :D
Yay for Heikki and Catherine!
Catherine in daylight!
and because I know what she was wearing today, I know that this is the back of her.
And that's not creepy at all. ;)
nope, not at all. ;)
i am sooo pleased i wont be alone at Spa :) we can stand up for each others stalkerish habits :)
yaaay! I was so pleased I had Pamela this weekend to let me know I am not the only one who will stand in the same place for hours to see one person :)
haha, me too! As Jeremy said, we are now all best friends for life!
My highlights today were more up close photos of Fernando and two photos of me with the "Lovely" Christian Horner (I told him he is lovely).
Back! Have I missed anything?
Also, any news on the outro, Lukeh? :)
oooh I shall send them to you now. I got distracted.
Thanks!
Ooh! sorry, will do that now.
Thanks so much! :D
This is why if anyone is even thinking about Spa, they should book their trip ASAP.
:D i think i've now got to go to melbourne... just to i can say i've been to the track where Jenson won... TWICE!! :D eheh
woooo! we would have so much fun :)
Just like Jarno is having so much fun. Check out the grin!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc07662-medium-jpg
I met Alan Jones :-)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000808-jpg
'e doesn't look-a very 'appy :(
trulli-o-meter = -100 today i see...
must be because of our feud ;)
Wrong way 'nando
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000864-jpg
hehehehe :D obviously :)
Musta been the real reason he didn't start today ;)
And on that, I'm off to training, catch you lot later.
Trulli not happy with Amy. Is that why Hekki is?
I'm sad that lots of people are being mean about Webber on twitter. :( no need to send the guy abusive tweets.. people can be mean :( *kicks twitter*
Well he wanted to take his career in a new direction with ferrari...
It's very childish. I'm talking to Nick about it right now. No wonder 'slebs get sick of it...
well, yes after hearing that we all like his team mate more than him he must have thought there was no point.
That's rubbish!! The fact they can even interact with him on a personal level like twitter should be a privilege.
it makes me angry.. what right to people have to be so abusive to someone who is actually a complete stranger to them. the internet is a mean place.
we said to Webber the other day that we like his tweets and he said something like "I'm running out of patience with it to be honest' or something to the effect that he's not liking it.
The team heard a rumble coming from the car - they thought it was hydraulics but they didn't realise until it was too late that it was a Thundercloud above his head :D
:D
For the attention of Journeyer:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/wmcap-67-wmv
awww :(
YAY! Thank you Lukeh. :)
that has got to be terrifying...
I don't blame him. I doubt he'll continue if he sees today's tweets.
yeah, i wouldn't blame him either. it's such a shame a handful of should be like that :(
He only just missed the Virgins and pace car when he was spining around to resume. Was quite scary.
this is why Pamela is awesome :D
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/imgp4479-jpg
Just missed:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000872-jpg
WOW! hehe
Awesome!! I bet Heikki was following you really... F1 drivers so do that...
Classic, check out the names:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000784-jpg
they really really do.
Wow!!
I'm loving these photos guys :D
I had the flag over the fence before he turned up because I feel that he can't walk away if he sees it there :) So far this theory has been right 2/2 times :D
aww, my pleasure :)
I am playing comment catch up:
I hated the look of those on the website but in person they look very very nice so that is what I am spending my 30 pound voucher on :D
Look, he's smiling:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000756-jpg
This is before he got cut up by a Virgin ;-)
Well, at least the lady behind him is happy to see him
Other people like Hekki too:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000724-jpg
:D hehehe the grey looks very nice. I may have to buy one at one point...
Ha! You should have seen the German woman next to us, I think she almost collapsed
It's just never the one you want!....
Look at you becoming a mclaren fan!
unless you're at goodwood... *ehem* :D
noo ssshhhh.... i'm not a mclaren fan.. just a Jenson fan. I am, however, totally over the moon that they allowed Jenson to pit when he wanted. Plus the factory tour JB and Jake did was brilliant! :)
no-one was safe:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000643-jpg
That segment was pretty fantastic. A lot less awkward than the interview thing from Australia too. Mclaren get a bit of a hard rep personally, but I think that was more because of Ron Dennis than anything...
Martin was so lovely this morning. It was nice of him to listen when I said 'good luck' and go out and win the race.
from all the stories you've told it sounds like you were actually IN the paddock! :)
You didn't hear about when we got into the paddock?
oh my god that guy is so annnooooying. He doesn't deserve a photo with Heikki :(
Now that would've been awesome - the BBCF1 team walking and talking then suddenly amy and co wander past behind. :D
see... now i don't know if you are joking or not... the way your weekend went i wouldn't be surprised...
I hope the Renault guys smiled nicely at Alfonso.....
Ok, it was on Friday, but still.....
well, I did see Martin in the paddock. But I didn't talk to him then.
oh the paddock/pit tour?... see i was thinking today. :)
a van of Renault guys came past while Alonso was signing and one of them rolled down the window and said something to him in Spanish, the only word I understood was "Fernando"
you are now gonna be able to do more name dropping than mr c! :)
See, now I've seen people mention Mclaren are favouring Jenson over Lewis because of today's strategy messup for Lewis... yeesh! It's blah blah blah all over again, boo.
its things like this that convince my mum I'm going to get a job in F1. She doesn't understand that hundreds of people go through the paddock at every race and the people you meet don't actually remember you when you leave.
I tried to photograph all their secrets:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000589-jpg
I bet they were reading their own live timing so they could say something and then it would appear in that fancy computer
You would be the ideal paddock tour guide
hehe some pics from the celebrations :D

and an arty one - http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/98096505/Getty-Images-Sport
That is quite a lot of ora- uh, rocket red!
I am so happy Jenson won that race
me too!!! :D :D
a LOT, indeed. Also, Jenson's cap seems like it's spelled Jensen because of how his signature is positioned.
Yeah I know!! I find that really annoying.
I saw him win last time :( He should share ;)
Look how comfy the grey jumper looks...
http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d10aus2012.jpg
It's quite unpleasant outside now. Lucky it wasn't a night race
wow.. i'm really slow, but that's the first time he's ever won outside of brackley.. and without celebrating with Shov, Bono, and Rubens.. aw bad times.
I notice Lewis wasn't made to sit in the photo and pretend to be happy like Heikki used to be
but Martin cried! Lovely friendly autograpphy Martin!
Oh yeah... never realised that...
I was just thinking on my way home 'gosh, when was the last time Lewis's team mate won a race instead of him?' and the answer came to me as 2007 because as much as it pains me, Heikki's win totally didn't count.
Phillipe Baby!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1000652-jpg
oh and I laughed when I saw Jess come running out of the garage to go down to the podium because she was obviously wearing heels and was running in that "I'm wearing heels and don't want to break my ankle' way :D
this is really nice to see
http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d10aus1965.jpg
plus lewis already has his t-shirt on. :)
would have been nice for him to have been in this shot though... rubens always was..
http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d10aus1947.jpg
(i love how mikey, Jessica, Jenson, and John all look like they are going to burst into tears with joy :) )
Oh, Felipe... or am I missing something?
:D hehehe I so wish i'd gone up to her at goodwood now. She was just looking at a random car.. i could easily have gone and said hi.
My bad spelling? ;-) ooops
loving fisi in the back ground :D
http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d10aus1858.jpg
Awwwwww
Was that just before we saw team button?
"Is that jessica? I swear thats jessica... it looks just like jessica!" then you notice team button and the rest was history :P
I wanted to get a picture of her and John for you but the only time I saw them was at night and because they didn't come near the fence it was too dark to catch them. Jenson turned up today after we had already left the paddock entrance because I had seen Catherine and Pamela had seen Christian and the crowd was crushing us.
heheh i loved that neither you nor chris believed that is could possibly be her :D
aww :) no worries, hehe i'll get some shots of her at Goodwood (i should think she'll come again this year) and Spa if she comes.
poor Fisi was wandering around all by himself. I took a few shots of him too :)
:)
one of my fav photos of the day - http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/98095742/Getty-Images-Sport
:D :D :D
It's amazing because it was so unexpected. I (heart) surprises like this.
for once we did not see Crofty but I saw Ant this morning and yelled "Morning Ant!" because we are bffs now.
That is one smily Jenson
hehehe did he say morning back?
seeing as you're Ant's bff you, mr c (with his bffs in the paddock) and mrs c (practically being a paddock celeb now) can get the attention of drivers for me so i can get nice pics in Spa :)
It's a vindicated Jenson.
he did a shy smile and wave, not a big grinny wave like Jake this morning!
Is everyone asleep?
I'm not. Going through other (non-F1) sites, though. :)
Finally - so tired I could barely finish it, but...
2010 Australian Grand Prix Report (Melbourne, Round 2, March 26th-28th) - http://tinyurl.com/ycort6o
no, just not in a chatty mood
ah sorry i'm around, my aunt's here so been chatting to her and things.
I'm watching football and blogging ;)
I'm here, was just eating my dinner and laughing at mum making a funny about the grand prix :)
I am waiting for my flight out of Melbourne :-)
How was the race for you sir?
very enjoyable, even with the drizzle :-)
Surprised by the amount of negative comments on Twitter about the race. There are a few heads that seemingly only want NASCAR type F1 races - how sad...
I don't know how anyone could have found that race not to be entertaining!
If this won't please them, nothing will.
It certainly pleased me
ooh I had to.
Exactly
Even I wouldn't argue that the race was dull.
Are you serious?
yay! :)
oh and morning/ afternoon Christine :)
One of those, yup :)
it was that good, I may come back for more next year :-)
There was something for everyone today - overtaking, strategy, collisions...
:) feeling less tired now?
It's almost like Jetlag without the travelling ;)
... rain
Less tired, more confused.
but we should not get over excited, there is a string of Tilkedromes waiting ...
ah.. okay :) confused about anything in particular?.. i may be able to answer the question with my favourite phrase of today... 'Jenson is a genius' :D
Malaysia may promise rain as well ?
Malaysia will be fine. China should be OK. I'm worried about Spain. Monaco will be fun whatever happens, what with 24 cars on that track.
Yes
And China too.
I'm hungry, but it's not breakfast time. It might be lunch time but Mr C is sleeping so I'm not sure what to do next.
oh no.... lets hope not..
You should almost definitely go to Greggs.
Thats what I would be saying if it wasn't Sunday.
one of the few pics I managed at that dark hour - winner
throw orange juice on him?
Awesome!
Eat anything you wish - I'm sure Mr C will prepare something for himself when he awakes ;)
I tried that yesterday. It didn't put me in his good books.
Hahahah.
Finns...
oh i can't answer that with 'Jenson is a genius' :( maybe have a toasted sandwich?... or... nachos? ;) I'm sure if you threatened to drop some orange on him he'd wake up :P
Yea, we do have race nachos but I don't think I want them. Maybe I'm not even hungry. Who knows.
I've just had kedgeree soup - most excellent
On the way out f hotel I bumped into the BBC crew. Looks like the pink shirt man was even staying on the same floor :-) I wonder if their internet was as hopeless as mine
Have I missed out on orange juice related hijinks?
hehehe Jenson would know... he's a genius ya'know :P
:D
Dave Gorman is accepting new ideas for the next series of Genius... do you think they will accept an entry if I just send 'Jenson Button'?
Didn't Mr. C. want them earlier?
I think this explains it:
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/27/daily-27th-march-2010/comments/#comment-728507
Haha, awww. poor mr c.
Although orange juice is yummy.
Sunday will have to wait till my return :-)
WHAT?
hey chap. marks out of ten for the race?
afternoon :)
Morning!
Hello. I overslept and missed the start by 15 minutes so decided to stay in bed and watch it after a sleep (may have had a hangover). Just finished - loved it
I think this race turned it up to 11 ;)
can it go up to 12?
Ello again
Sure ;)
Afternoon all.
The best part of 5.5 hours typing yielded this: www.bit.ly/F1WEK4 (Ping!)
Most definately a 10.
You did it!
Read it when it was tweeted earlier and loved it, as always!
There was one section towards the end that I really liked.. :P
Oooh, GP+, theres someone trying to beat you :) Will read after my dinner
Thanks, and haha yeah...Lou's stuff was great.
Good sleep Mr C? I need to go wake Miss Pineapple. She's having a mega sulk as JB won and Vettel retired again.
Looks like Kobayashi did collide with someone/something to lead to his wing failure after
http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/10731/
mm, ta. i feel normal now.
2279 comments in the live thread? wow
Not a huge issue Adie but the tooltip for the Issue 4 front cover says it's the issue 2 cover
Thanks Luke....sorted!
awww there we go. a lovely photo of them both
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=149325&catID=1105-4457
See, good, quality car...
yay!
is she in her pyjamas?
I actually think that the Oz trophy is one of the nicer ones....
erm... no - http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=149338&catID=1105-4457
and Jenson has two :D
ooooh. that makes more sense.
:D :D :D
He should stop hogging them ;)
Which reminds me to do my voicemail for the show.
Who's a lucky boy then...
Have you guys heard that it was a nut wot done it?....
To Mr Vettel....
i didn't know that.
oh dear :(
Red Bull should come with a warning - may contain nuts.
A vibrating wheel nut damaged the mounting.. apparently...
Ah some pics of Dannii.. i didn't think she'd shown up.
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=149182&catID=1105-4457
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=149178&catID=1105-4457
Vibrating nuts....
Painful....
Uh oh..
...is that...
brian mcfadden?!
What I thought!
dc will find a way to blame a 3rd party supplier...
"red bull didn't exactly mine the metal from the ground did they?"
bbbbrian!
Could have been from the tyre change....
The stories re Kimi to Red Bull will hot up.... again...
I shall desisit from asking him in Jordan... but I'll bet the journos won't....
accepting blame or responsibility isn't in DC's nature. either for himself or "his" team.
bound to be the power voltage in australia not being clean enough to feed the guns or something.
assuming he's still contracted to RBR by then. ;)
This site is sooo funny...
Love this story...
http://grandprixdiary.com/grand-prix-diary-2010/2010-gp-australia/michael-puts-in-a-classic-schumacher-drive-unfortunately-it’s-a-classic-ralf-schumacher-drive
he's the perfect RBR shill for the beeb, they won't get rid of him. it's like they have a guaranteed blue-wash for 3 hours of coverage every weekend.
that's a really good read Adie, thank you. :) oh and thank you for displaying my stuff so nicely :) it's great
surely RBR won't hang on to DC if he's in a DTM Merc, when they're sponsoring Audi?
that's a fair point. do any DTM races clash with F1? will we be getting shot of him?
Not a problem, thank you for letting me use it.
Quick check of Wikipedia shows there are no calendar conflicts. Presumably to avoid clashing with Schumi and the German F1 brigade.
hehe:
@karunchandhok: right.....i'm off to bed with NO alarm tomorrow ! will still be at breakfast before @BSenna and "Team Brazil" i'm sure...
HAHA! :D
ahh, drats. i may have to blog a strongly worded post to the bbc about DC's unrepentant bias this week :)
:D
I thought he was much worse in Bahrain
I found it a bit odd on twitter (I feel like im complaining loads about twitter today) that during the forum, there were red bull fans complaining about the amount of mclaren stuff. Considering most weeks it's in a red bull motorhome, with a red bull employee talking to other red bull employees...
i don't know if he's worse than last year though. have only just started watching the bbc forum.
have removed nick's conversation from earlier.
Did I miss something interesting?....
Nope.
nothing worth repeating
Not at all.
We aren't in the habit of removing interesting conversations.
The orange juice, on the other hand... ;)
#sorrymrc
hehe. wasn't that yesterday. i forget.
Shhhhhhhhhh.
Oooo....
Four quick denials....
Must have been interesting....
But I shall leave it at that!...
Right...offski for a bit.
Looking forward to downloading the debrief tomorrow.
Bye Adie
Bye mate.
Just wondering, can't seem to be able to send a voicemail at the moment. I just get 'sidepodcast is offline'. I'm pretty sure I haven't done anything wrong...
someone had that yesterday, too. hmmm.
Hi folks,
Just back in - couldn't get back to sleep, so went for a walk and an ice cream instead
:D
seems okay though. odd.
Hey leigh. Sounds kimi-esque. :)
:D
I got my race report done in a blur, so now even words are falling out in a semi-detached manner
the ice cream and sunshine was very necessary
Just tried and it worked, hmm?
Here's a crazy thought - Chandhok for Lotus when Trulli retires!!
#blameskype
I'll go along with that.
From Karun
Someone post them to him DVD post haste
:D
ha. Moto GP have a reserve circuit! love that
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82334
Its a good idea. F1 should have one if say South Korea doesn't make the grade.
its a good idea, but the extra costs may be huge for teams, i guess it depends how far in advanced they find out
A lot of possibilities. Aragon is one, but so are Paul Ricard and Imola.
Jerez would be the obvious choice for a reserve here...
wasn't montreal the reserve circuit last year when abu dhabi looked like it wouldn't be ready in time?
I assume they will. I guess it will probably be in Europe, Portugal or something
Or Portimao.... (jus' sayin')
:D
Jerez is still barred from holding a Grand Prix
not officially but good idea
really? why?
its mayor gatecrashed the 1997 podium ceremony. bernie was furious.
13 years later. Bernie holds massive grudges!
During the European GP of '97, the mayor and some of his contingent of Jerez burst onto the podium during the trophy handing
true story.
I doubt even if they weren't, Bernie would want 3 Spanish races.
From wiki
ok wow. Bernie should get over it, it was 13 years ago!
ah that makes sense
By the way, heavy rain anticipated for this evening's IRL race. Should be fun....
'"We have all been quite honest and said that we all have difficulties [with the mirrors]– apart from Lewis. The problem for me is that we are driven by the aerodynamics, but the mirrors situated on the aero stuff vibrates."'
emphasis mine.
why would you specifically single out lewis?
Who said this?
oooh yeah sorry. Rubens
Perhaps Lewis specifically said he likes the mirrors there?
Anyone know why there was alot of booing at the podium ceremony? and i like how the commentator man said "2 in a row for Jenson Button"
They were booing the Victoria PM, apparently... Not very popular anymore, it seems.
The Premier of Victoria is not well liked at the moment
They booed the Premier of Victoria apparently...
Why?
He's a politician - there's probably a long list...
TV viewers in the UK should look out for an AT&T Williams feature on the BBC’s coverage of next weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix. The British broadcaster is tracking a car part from the FW32 across the globe as it travels from Albert Park to Grove to be checked, and then out to Malaysia in time for Sepang’s first practice session on Friday.
http://www.attwilliams.com/news/view/1282
Mrs. Goat has started packing for our move AT THE END OF APRIL!!!
I should add we haven't even packed our suitcases for the UK trip yet...
April is too good a month to pack in.
I have always got the movers to pack for me. It's much easier & you're covered by their insurance if anything gets broken.
It's also a lot more expensive :(
I don't know about where you are but it cost me approx £70.00 which was much better than doing the packing myself
In Denmark they wouldn't even get off the couch for that!
I'd get off a couch for £70
IndyLights:
I've been seriously questioning the depth of talent in Lights this year, but I did expect someone to spin in the dry on the warm-up lap......
*did not expect
*sits back in daily*
IndyLights:
I really hope the future of the IRL is not foisted on these guys - this is amateur hour
If anyone can give me a genuine explanation to this I'll be amazed...
http://www.vw-cup.co.uk/news/news_mar19_10.htm
so.confused
*joins in daily land* :)
NASCAR: rain delay!
hi lukeh
Lights is also red flagged for rain
F1 had a bit of rain today - it had its best race in a while. One of the good things about F1, TBH. :)
Can't help much except that Volkswagen own Seat so that's the connection
true, but lights are going out in 5 - one of the rules of the junior series is if rains, they halt the race and changed the cars to wet set ups
the real rain is coming soon
yeah and racingline (who run hte championship) used to run Seat Cupra aswell, but i find it odd that Volkswagen would want to a) prove another car is better or b) prove that effectively the same car
Then my only other guess is that they want more people to attend & this brings in the Seat fans. As someone who knows absolutely nothing about it, that's all I can think of ;)
Lights:
Race is back on, but under the safety car for the moment. Green flag in two laps. This could be the equivalent of watching blind people driving at racing speed
last call for voicemails about today's race.
0121 28 87225 - all thoughts v.much appreciated.
I don't know the answer either, its an odd one, I can't believe that VW would let a Seat car in and equally find it hard to believe that after the huge cull Seat made to their British and World Motorsport programs that they are now trying to get a car in the VW Cup? makes no sense
Perhaps they're looking at a Seat-VW cup?
Unfortunately I have nothing clever to say after todays race, except "it was very, very good"
:D
Just did mine... twice... I kind of ran out of steam on the first one when I got confused thinking there was a flag at the beginning of the race.
we'll take the second one then :)
last time i called up while i was this happy i made a fool of myself.. so.. erm.. i'll pass for today :)
Happy voicemails are good.
You are too kind...
By the way for me it worked... then I called back and it said you were offline then I tried again and it worked.
Lou where are you?
Which would make no sense, they just cut their own championship, i dont get it
Lou Lou, Lou Lou
(sorry suddenly went all Who there)
ha ha I haven't had chance to come down yet.. still on the moon...;)
:D
hi every one, long time no speak, i just checked FR and i'm in first place OMG ...... wont last though, how is every one
oh sod it, i left a message anyways - it's a sequel to my bahrain message
:D
Hi Keith, doing well thanks, great race today & only 3 more days at work. How's things with you? Where are you marshalling this year?
Off to bed for me. Night!
hey keith that is brilliant. you have to tell us how did it here:
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/28/fantasy-racers-2010-who-could-have-predicted-that/
i think the answer to the post title is "keith could" :)
night journeyer, hi everyone else...
Night mate.
Hey guille
Night, hi Guille
ehehehehe i love this pic - http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6325/00000402091328.jpg
night :) hi guille
alonso thinks schumi is a rival?
Now, I took 12 points to Vettel, to Michael and to some of the main rivals for the championship. So it has been a much better race in terms of points than Bahrain, if you compare with your main competitor.
hehe. hope people ringing in, are squeezing in website / twitter plugs etc
AND doesn't count Massa as his 'main competitor'
...
Sugar.
very odd. i get seb, and i can see that mclaren are still behind. but schumi?
hehe. ring in again and christine can edit it in :)
But its in the other room, and I have my feet up... I'm too lazy for this plugging malarky
he's playing mind games, probably...
i'll remind ya next sunday
Cheers mate.
IndyLights:
Oh dear - public safety address at the track. Already raining for the Lights race, but are expecting thunderstorms and lightning in and around the IRL race.
Alonso made a quote about wanting to beat Schumi the most or something?
Too late for voicemails BTW?
he did? cool.
go for it
OK, give me 5...
*high five*
Hehehe.
They're now asking fans to evacuate certain stands and a few viewing areas
:o
Done ;)
Are the drivers that bad ? ;)
!!
From Legend Legard
yes
exactly
Wait ... did you receive it ok? I might have forgot to stop torrenting...
erm pass. we check in a bit
OK Let me know - I'll record an MP3 just in case...
Next question is "will this IndyCar race actually go ahead if the weather reports are correct..?"
oh goodness... listening to mum trying to describe what happened in the GP to my Dad is just painful.
Without wishing to be mean, I hope those Lights drivers are not the future of the IndyCar series - most of them were beyond amateurish
I do hope you're not referring to Pippa Mann when you say that ;)
Trying to describe what happens in a GP to my Mum is painful
Right, Well I emailed a voicemail as well, just in case the other one got messed up.
Just use the bits you like best I guess ;)
Well, at least Pippa Mann had the 'flu and was out after lap 3 with an oil line failure, but there seems to be two/three good runners and the rest are actually awful. Much of last season's good talent has left
ooh, ta chap.
No probs ;9
Oh ohhhh....
IndyCar start delayed. No determined start time yet
Love this Big Pic today: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/28/trouble-overhead/
You wouldn't catch me getting up in a helicopter, no matter how great the picture turns out.
You should, it's an awesome experience!
wow!!
i wouldn't mind.....
Being in a helicopter? Nah, didn't enjoy it.
It just reminded me that the attendance looked much better than it has done in recent years
Wow, I love that three cars wide of Buemi, Kobayashi and Liuzzi/Sutil. Might be where Kamui damaged his wing
It has to be isn't it?
NASCAR race postponed until midday EST (about 5pm GMT) tomorrow
Yet the F1 ran in the rain...
...WIN :D
Forgoodnesssake! GET RAIN TYRES
For those that have it and don't fancy streaming, the IRL race (if it goes ahead) is on Sky Sports 3 as well
does anyone ever end up turning up to the posponed races? i take it people have work etc...
tend to be 1/3rd or 1/2 crowds - the circuits in the US are often season tickets jobs (especially if they have NASCAR), so for many customers it wouldn't be a big loss
I love Picapp.com. I posted just a few hours ago and there are 300 more photos to choose from now ;)
That place is a bloggers dream. Just a wonderful site.
Woohoo! Driver Consistency is done too: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/driver-consistency-australia/
I heart early morning Grands Prix ;)
i wish it didn't break doohickey :(
It does? How?
Can you not just pinch the image link from the code? I used to when adding the image to the Featured Content Gallery on F1TP...
javascript breaks the doohickey and lclt.
not sure, could look into it
If anyone here is going racing, don't buy these firesuits...

Apparently Kubica killed a Clio!
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/motorsport/3511462/F1-star-Robert-Kubica-destroys-car
ooh wait, who commented here about sorting that for him?
found it: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/18/daily-18th-march-2010/#comment-719568
cool! this was a different event i think, he was doing quick laps at another circuit launching a new clio or something
Holy moly - proper monsoon at St Pete. The grass patches trackside are getting fully waterlogged...
Evening
Hey Pat :)
Just been to Mum's. Had planned to tidy the flat and do some vacuuming but I got part way through the tidying and decided a pizza and glass of wine is far more preferable.
hey pat
This is now officially Malaysia '09 at St Pete weather. They announced a 4.30 EST start and the rain tripled - not the best picture, but:
http://twitpic.com/1bl7hk
Now full on lightning too
Evening all
Went to bed to get two hours sleep before Giggles Radio but I guess that is not a great idea when you have been up for 28 hours straight.

This was mentioned earlier in the race thread - Heikki is smart ;)
:-)
hi steven
Hehe, hi :)
Blimey. See also this warning in the media centre

/via @TrackSideOnline
You've got a cracker of a show to catch up on. Hey.
I guess the race will be postponed till tomorrow
Yeah, they did the evacuation during the Lights race. Insane...
I loaded all the comments I missed and scanned them as they came in. Everyone seemed to enjoy it
I'm not sure what the story is, because this is an airport, so it may need to reopen for public use
That could make it awkward then. I am sure Bernie would approve of playing chicken with the planes to spice things up
Thing is, the light is going to get bad soon anyway
Mr C is talking to the Skype Lady. Boo.
He seems to spend a lot of time with her. He will be really upset if he ever finds out she is not real
A little project I've been working on during the weekend:
http://fototest2008.blogspot.com/2010/03/js.html
It should adapt to the size of the browser's window, and if you click 'restart size', it reloads the images and links to match any change on it (if you maximized it or went full screen, or changed the size in any way).
I guess I can now get rid of flash for my Picasa albums... :D
ps: code is still a mess, a week ago 'lightbox', 'google API' and 'javascript' were strange words to me... ;-)
She's not real? That's my day ruined

I don't understand how we had a nice early race and yet we're starting recording late. Oh well. I'm just commenting because Mr C can't see the comments and he thinks I'm talking about him. Hehe.
awwww maybe it's cause you slept during the day?
This is not unusual :)
:)
I like the early starts. Stuff the European TV audiences Bernie, make all the races start at this time.
I'm not looking forward to writing the F1WE when we're on European times. Need to review my workflow for the mag I think....
It's the sidepodcast way to be late. If you were early the show would end up doing a bad show or having technical problems
oh :D
You haven't started yet??
are you mad??????? i likes my sleep..
We just did.
btw I had a nice present from my sister. The book "Wine for Dummies". I shall commence sampling.
I like them at 10 or 11am, or at 5 or 6pm. I like my Sunday afternoons for other stuff really.
Haha, I'm an early riser anyway. Up at 5am 2-3 days a week as it is to go galavanting round the country for work, so the 06:55 alarm call today was something of a lie in, clock change or not!
Good work!
I prefer em in the afternoon or really early morning, means I don't miss it for my footbal
That could work too.
There's a technical problem though - I can't see a live feed, so something must be broken...
As in 10am starts
Actually 5 or 6 is a touch late but it gets the most viewers.
Ouch. #doesn't-do-mornings
#sameperson?
#samepersondifferentcountry?
Good thing the race isnt today. It is really really raining!
#quitepossibly
have fun :)
You're not in Florida are you? ;)
Morning. Any plans to stalk people today?

morning :) looking forward to seeing joe today?
Really looking forward to joe! Just have 9 hours of work to get through first :(
oh no!! work is silly :(
IRL Race now officially postponed until 10am EST tomorrow (3pm GMT)
If i was smart i would take monday off. So much more sleep needed after a huge weekend!
How are you supposed to concentrate on work after several days stalking racing drivers?
i'm sad the weekend is over tbh.
It's just started for me, plus I've not seen the race yet.
It was really boring. I wouldn't bother if I was you
;)
Oh, OK. I'll watch Bahrain again then.
Good choice
you've not seen the race!!!!
I woke up at a quarter to 7, fell asleep again, woke up at ten past and couldn't keep my eyes open, so I tuned in to Five Live (using TuneIn Radio on iPhone) and listened to it.
oh. i was going to ask how you've avoided the spoilers...
I'm slightly annoyed with myself for not getting up and putting the computer on, but I wouldn't have heard the brilliant commentary of Ant and David.
By the way, why the heck do they have to mention football results from the previous day every so often? Don't people have radios?
You can get their commentary on your computer too
it's annoying.. but sky lets me flick between bbc and five live quickly. most of the time they do it quick enough for it not to matter.
I'm really not looking forward to work tomorrow. Maybe days off should be banned. It just makes me really not want to go back :P
Right guys, I'm offski. Another 5am start tomorrow. And on a Monday to boot.
Quick ping before I go if you haven't already seen it: http://bit.ly/F1WEK4
Sleep well y'all.....
Andy - If you listerned to the race coverage and if one of commentators is/was Legard, then how do you know for sure that either Hamilton lapped the field more times than there are laps of the race distance or that Hamilton was the only driver in the race?
Just my impression of him. I particularly dislike Legard's Hamilton-love when Button is in front of Hamilton.....
I didn't notice him being more Hamilton-focused today, Hamilton was the best driver out there today though.
Not that i'm discounting Button, he did a very good job, but I think Hamilton was quicker and very unlucky with strategy
Button was the best driver today. He was the only one who made the right call on tyres and that was the most important factor in winning the race. Lewis was great to watch and what he did with his car was incredible but Jenson did the better job without taking as many risks or wearing out his equipment so much
Button took a big risk and it worked for him. Vettel's brake problems gifted him the win.
Not even close Jon. Button drove way too much of a controlled race, Alonso had more of an exciting race coming from further behind and getting further ahead of Hamilton and the same problems that affected Alonso also affected Hamilton - namely something called the "Massa Monorail....".
Jon,
Read my consistency analysis: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/driver-consistency-australia
Even taking the pit stops out Button was consistently faster. Hamilton's fastest lap was slightly better, that's all...
He made the right calls at the right time, Lewis was faster at many points across the race, they didn't bring him in because he'd worn his tyres down, they bought him in because others had and they'd gone faster, whitmarsh said so
But he was stuck behind Kubica for ages, and then Alonso who was stuck behind Massa, his average was going to be down.
I hear these things are awful loud.
They fly as softly as a cloud
Jenson did the better job by a long way. Lewis looked faster to me for most of the race but the object is not to go fast. The object is to win and as JYS would say to win at the slowest speed possible. Button for a lot of the time after Lewis's second stop was 2 seconds a lap slower and protecting his equipment.
Alonso was behind until Mclaren bought him in, then he caught right back up and then couldnt pass
Average lap times are totally meaningless.
Not really. They are just as loud as Barrichello Barricades.....
But was also out in front and had made the right call earlier on, Lewis was chasing a pack down, you cant compare them
It's also the secret of winning at Scalextric
Even when they back up your argument?
little simpsons reference you've missed there Jordan ;)
I agree you can't compare them. One did what was needed to win the race and the other didn't. I think Lewis is the better driver but he was shown up by a smarter driver today
In qualifying it makes sense, but when Hamilton was blocked by Massa for many laps and Kubica for many laps, it brings down his average lap time.
If 2 drivers are both in clear air for a race then you can compare them, but if one is and one isnt you cant compare them.
Thats what I was saying :D Jenson made the right call but in terms of speed Lewis was faster, but after his early call, Jenson didnt need to go all out.
I haven't read the whole post but when you have cars that are stuck behind cars that are 2 seconds a lap slower then their average is no reflection of performance.
You may be able to extract something useful from the information but I am not sure what
Then why are all the drivers so close on average? I think the average laptimes do show something valuable and that is how consistent they were.
True, it helped that Jenson was out in front, but he was able to drive at a very quick pace extremely consistently - something we know Hamilton cannot do well. So Button was better today because he made his strategy work better for him ;)
The object is to win. Being faster than anyone else and not winning is bad driving.
The same argument can be made for "Fastest lap time" too. Look at how many times KImi was able to finally dial in that god awful Ferrari a few year back... about 10 laps from the end of each race you just knew he was going to set the fastest lap time from near the bottom of the race runners still on the lead lap.
Lewis can't drive consistent fast laps? SInce when.
No its not, he couldnt overtake Kubica and couldnt overtake Alonso/Massa, his team called him in for a stop that in hindsight was wrong. Thats why he lost
We all know he chews up the tyres - fror example Turkey 08...
Didn't today! Was consistently lapping faster and faster until he hit a car he couldnt overtake
I have always said fastest lap time means absolutely nothing. In most cases the guy who wins the race is not going flat out at the end when the track is at its fastest and fuel is low so fastest lap goes to someone either by pure chance or someone like Kimi trying to make the point that he was fast but it took so long for the car to be driveable for him. He was doing them tp put pressure on the team to sort the car.
The team didn't call Jenson in. He told them he was coming in three laps early. Lewis has to learn to question the team.
That was because the tyres were just too soft. He can do consistent laps if he has the equipment. That is a one off that has never happened in any of his other races.
Ah but that was the switch from Wets to Drys, Jenson really needed to make that decision, Lewis was going from slick to slick, so in reality its a strategy call and not a 'feel' call as Jenson did.
his risk whether he would have achieved 1st or 2nd was still amazing and i think i would have been just as happy with 2nd... well okay i'm maybe a tiny bit happier now...
(hearts) yay for Jenson being awesome! :)
I hear he's a genius. :P
I am not sure there is a difference
i hear that too!! :D i'm inclined to believe the rumours ;)
oh lukeh.. my phone just ran out of battery after trying to arrange things with nay and em.. will have to tell you our eta in london tomorrow when i figure some things out... sorry :(
I think there is, Jenson wasnt happy on inters, he felt there was enough grip for slicks. Great move.
The team tell Lewis that new slicks are going to make him go a second a lap faster, you're gonna come in.
No worries :)
You skiving off school to go there again?
I think it's called a "study day"
no... i'm on holidays as of friday. 3 weeks off :)
Being a second a lap quicker is fine unless it puts you in a position where you have to drive 2 seconds a lap quicker to get back to where you were in the first place.
I hope someone is protecting you from Emily's bad influence
I think at that point they thought the others would come in too and so they could jump them at this point. Turns out they were wrong. All im saying is, Lewis was fast but strategies screwed him. He was in third behind Kubica, they must have believed it.
I'm now watching the race on iPlayer and wishing I was listening to Ant and David.
Legard must have a list of drivers and what they are known for:
"Schumacher is a master in the wet"
Sigh
Emily is kinda ill at the moment.. so she probably wont be being much of a bad influence... i'm sure my other friend will protect me ;)
Our show is complete. Maybe a couple of outtakes but no promises.
yay for outtakes! they make up for the fact we don't get to watch the recordings anymore :)
oh and i think Jenson should get a point in the rankings tomorrow Christine.. just cause he's a genius ;)
We'll see :)
i did a perfect show.
#nothingtoseehere
He's in good company then :D
and Alonso for the 'don't want to know' to his engineer... :-)
That sort of statement must mean something happened.
That seems like a quick recording session
hehe. i didn't kill anyone.
umm, pretty sure you did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65QrvxX-2Cg
If Mr C made no mistakes then that is entirely possible :D
was there another
'what do we want?'
'....i..... i don't know!!' moment?
or a moment when you speak so quickly it's actually impossible to hear you?... or did you simply throw orange over Christine?...
:) hehe
she threw it over me!!
bet you regret taking that sound wall down now dontcha
i know... i was wondering if you got your own back... :)
i was asleep!
has anyone used the new 2010 red bull app? it's kinda good...
i wouldn't ever do such a horrible thing to another human being...
;)
oooh bad times. clearly ive missed this story!
hehehe :)
Hmmm. It's a good job you're not in my rankings, Mr C, or you'd be lower than a certain MSC.
Does Jamie get a gazillion extra points this week for being totally awesome and not letting him past for like...a year (felt like it!!) i promised him a coffee if he could finish in front of him, shame he finished behind. I quite fancied a coffee with Jamie.
Oooff that's harsh
I've also noticed that MR C and MSC are very similar
ooh scarily so
you take that back!
since when have the rankings been related to on track performances?
You make a good point. ummmm, can he get extra points for being super awesome?
Add a few caps locks in there and about 8 exclamation marks, you may be on the right tracks.
uh oh....
I mean MR C looks a bit like MSC - there's just one letter different and the different letters are next to one another in the alphabet.
Surely Christine can make an exception for keeping MSC behind you for multiple laps
I think that Mr C is much taller and is unlikely to wear all white outfits
it's a sunday night, there was a race today and we're all wrapped up by 11pm. 2010 rules!
we're off to watch some itunes, will see y'all in the morning.
xx
does eat pasta in the ferrari motorhome though!

*looks at fantasy racers scores*... that's true ;)
night to everyone leaving ;)
you're all big meanies, but i still love you all.
(plus you haven't thrown a drink over me)
*yet ;)
What time did you finish for Oz '09?
am sure your bff will stand up for you
#loveyoureallymrc...
#pleasedon'thurtme
Night to the leavers. I'm semi-lurking. Just working on stats for my game while listening to chilled out music, drinking a chicken cup-a-soup...
*waves*
Im putting together a VW Cup Proposal and budget
I was also looking at the points standings. Red Bull might have great race pace but their chances of a drivers title are screwed already IMO..
I really hate the points system all ready. It's a long season but it already puts some good drivers right back
Good night
Night
Shift change.
Night RG
Night RG
It could be decided as much by retirements as by race pace.
It would be quite ironic if the champioship winner this year isnt the person with the most wins. #welldonefia
I'll be semi-lurking also for the next hour; I'm putting marks to some exams. Maybe some good music can put me on good mood and increase the marks for the students ;-)
Quite normal though.
Maybe, but a DNF or two from the others and they're in the front again. It's not more or less rewarding than last year, the percentages are almost the same.
I've realised I really need to find a way to sort my music into moods
yup, but they bought it in to make hte winner win right?
That's true I suppose - I forget we'll see some high scores at year end.
Genius Mix on iTunes?
No they brought it in to give something to the new teams
Haven't got around to playing with itunes yet
but it only gave points to 2 more people?
yes, but points mean prizes - in the form of TV monies
Yes. They could've done an IRL-like system and given points down the field if they'd really wanted to be fair.
hmm. not convinced. hteres still 14 cars not getting points.
thats how i'd have done it if i was trying to give everyone points
What do you want, a point for turning up?
But those extra two places will mean the middle order are sorted more fairly in the final standing, for the drivers at least.
no i want it how it was before, but if the point of the new system is to give new teams points, you do exactly that. the new teams arent going to score a point this year unless ALOT of people fall off
That's short-term thinking. The new teams will only be this slow for a year or so. The points system will likely be this way for 5 or 6 years or more.
true but even Force India took many years to get to the standard they are now, they must be thinking very long term
Possibly. Its as much about the rest of the midfield (or back of it) too.
No one is going to run away with the championship this year, the leader is going change multiple times. Provided Red Bull can get their realiability issues sorted, a couple of race wins regardless of what others do will bring them right back into.
true but even Force India took many years to get to the standard they are now, they must be thinking very long term {Comment #883}
Only one-and-two-thirds seasons (they scored a point in their penultimate race as Spyker (Fuji 2007) and Spa 2009 was almost exactly two-thirds of the way into the second season after that). I know it felt a lot longer than that, but changing the points system every year just makes everyone involved in the changes feel silly. Admittedly, it's going to take the new teams a season to get to where Force India were in the first place, but that still leaves significant points possible to the savvy new team by 2012. And if Concorde is similar now to what it was last time, they'll get some TV money simply for finishing races (scaled according to position at certain points of the race).
i'm off to go watch this wonders of the solar system programme. night all xx
Right now it looks like Ferraris vs McLarens with RBR taking points off them when they can finish. That 4 will get whittled down with a retirement or two. It'll be interesting to see who's left standing.
night
night lou
G'night :)
I saw it earlier. Awesom program again
The championship could go anywhere yet. Just wait till other teams do what ever Red Bull are doing to get the low ride height in quali.
night lou.
I saw the first yesterday. two things: 1) it was very good, 2) I can't believe you have that image quality on open TV
