Hello and welcome to Saturday! It's David Coulthard's birthday today, and the man is in Australia along with the rest of the BBC team, gearing up for qualifying later today. We're doing the same, and there'll be plenty of threads to follow along with later. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:

  • Stuart Codling has a presence on the brand new Formula Santander site, which seems to be a slice of F1 news and gossip from the major sponsor of Ferrari, McLaren and several races. Holly Samos is also writing on the website, and although it's not a beauty to look at, and there's still a few kinks to be worked out, it looks like there might be some good content.
  • We just wanted to highlight a tweet from Renault who said: Did you know we published blogs from our fans, too? http://cot.ag/c1wUX6 Come on aspiring writers and Renault fans, get scribbling That seems very cool, doesn't it? You'd better get writing, Renault want to hear from you!
  • Finally, we did our Fantasy Racers Reminder yesterday, and although it is too late to make changes to your team now, it's worth reading as it's a fabulous guest post from Gavin. If you'd like to feature your team in an upcoming reminder, please let me know, or pop your name as a volunteer in the wiki.
  • Whilst we're talking about predictions and such like, don't forget to post your predictions to the Sofa F1 championship as well. Also, remind me to do mine, please!

That should do it for now. Stay tuned to Sidepodcast as we have lots of field reporters running around Albert Park and it's fabulous fun watching their progress. I will see you in the comments.

    Hello Sidepodcast,

following the discussion at the last race about overtaking being practically impossible due to the aerodynamics of the cars. Has the FIA thought about a rules change that instead of altering refueling or not or other such examples, instead will regulate the aerodynamics so that cars can overtake easily?

    Ta

    keep up the good work.

Hey Peter. I think they've tried to do a lot of that already - like in the rules for 2009, which banned most forms of winglets. Trouble is, engineers are so good nowadays that someone has always found a loophole to go through, and if it's effective, everyone just copies it.

They should change it, but they probably won't.

They have spent years trying to restrict aero but they only ever want to make minor changes when major surgery is required

    Hi Pat

Hi. I've been semi-lurking all evening.

  • Peter Holt27/03/2010 at 00:33

    Thanks folks

by major surgery i presume we mean tiny front ad back wings or none at all? I was thinnking that the reason they wouldn't do that is because essentially it do de-value the brand of F1 being the best and make it just another formula ford, correct?

  • Peter Holt27/03/2010 at 00:33

Pretty much. F1 is supposed to be the fastest brand of racing around, on road courses at least.

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 00:35

I'm just stressed about strikes and stuff.

I mean massive major surgery. I have tried to explain what I want in comments before but it doesn't work so I wrote an article on it last week.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 00:37

It's annoying me a lot about the disturbed air on the cars, because the technology is there to mostly cure, but for some reason F1 continues to ignore it.

    Irritating...

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 00:39

If you need to firm up your plans buy a flexible bus ticket

It's too expensive. I can afford the bus but only if I book an advanced non-refundable ticket. They won't agree to refund my train ticket until they've confirmed what services they intend to run which will be after the cut-off for the cheaper bus tickets....

  • Peter Holt27/03/2010 at 00:42

Another thing, on the subject, can anyone explain in laymans terms the McLaren tube thing that is being discussed? A diagram or photo would be brill if anyone can point me in the right direction?

Michael using a most interesting analogy on the R5L F1 Preview show. Is a soccer game that ended 0-0 less exciting than a basketball game that ended 100-100? Not necessarily.

F1 is not like motorcycle racing or basketball. It's F1, and F1 has always had less overtaking than other forms of motorsport. F1 can be improved, for sure, but F1 has always been like this in the past.

Also, he mentions that many people have thought about it for many years, but it's not easy to improve, but there is always some form of excitement there.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 00:50

    I can really sympathise Alison

I was unsure if I was going on holiday up until the day I was flying

Then I didn't know if I'd get stuck there

Michael knows nothing about basketball it seems.

When it's 100-100 there will be overtime till there is a winner.

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 00:53

I think I'm going to end up driving which I had decided not to do. That's why we booked the flights we did. It's a flipping long way to drive particularly late at night.

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 00:55

I think I'm going to end up driving which I had decided not to do. That's why we booked the flights we did. It's a flipping long way to drive particularly late at night.

So you've cancelled your bookings, then? How far away is it?

    do the strikes effect you?

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 00:57

So you've cancelled your bookings, then? How far away is it?

No, they won't let me. They'll spend a couple of weeks faffing before deciding but I'm travelling right over the strike times. I can't see how a train is going to run the full length of the country.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 00:59

No, they won't let me. They'll spend a couple of weeks faffing before deciding...

Unfortunately, that is an industry standard

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:00

I can't see how a train is going to run the full length of the country.

I wonder if they'll offer a bus replacement service

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:00

Unfortunately, that is an industry standard

Yeah I understand that. But I can't afford to end up having paid for two trips. Nor can I afford the trip without discount for advanced booking. I don't want a refund on my tickets, I want to travel.

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:00

I wonder if they'll offer a bus replacement service

and thats how they wont give you your money back.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:01

and thats how they wont give you your money back.

No, that won't suit everyone and the terms of the ticket are changed so they should be duty bound to offer a free rebook or cancellation

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:02

No, that won't suit everyone and the terms of the ticket are changed so they should be duty bound to offer a free rebook or cancellation

but they'll be changed now rather than when alison had booked her ticket?

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:03

but they'll be changed now rather than when alison had booked her ticket?

There's still time to avert the strikes

When the BA strikes were announced we firmed our flying plans 3 - 5 days in advance

The train stuff will probably be similar

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:04

I'm not concerned I won't get my money back. I'm skilled enough at causing a fuss whether it's a right or not. I'm concerned that they'll try and rectify the situation or whatever and I'll turn up to travel and not be able to. The train company at that point give you a refund and tell you to sort yourself out.....

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:05

They have no interest in the cost of short-notice alternative arrangements.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:05

I'm concerned that they'll try and rectify the situation or whatever and I'll turn up to travel and not be able to......

Keep an eye on their website for details and have the car as your back-up plan

  • Jeremy27/03/2010 at 01:10

Almost with the gang that met Crofty and Ant. Sucks to be me but I'm so happy for the others! I'm sure they'll share they're photos :-)

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:11

    But it's like 500 miles :(

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:11

and a good few hours less travel time

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:12

    But it's like 500 miles :(

You do need a back up plan though

Maybe split the journey over 2 days and stay overnight somewhere

It's unfortunate but there's likely to be increased cost somewhere unless the strike is called off

I don't think they do internal flights

I bet those dates are suddenly more expensive though

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:20

    cheapo Ryanair flight?

I checked the price of flights before I booked the trains. Only BA appear to fly the route and it was too expensive.

Jon is right though this is not the first time the unions have done this kind of thing just before an election and given the tories a free ride. There was a massive strike in 79 and all the tory posters had the slogan Labour isn't working. Thatcher wone a huge majority.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:27

    Dates, out & back?

Seems to be 80 return on initial glance

  • Alison27/03/2010 at 01:27

I struggle to understand the electorate at the best of times but I can't figure out why Cameron is not well clear in the polls just now. We have a huge recession and a bit of scandal going round and a party that has been in government for 30 years. How is he not winning by a mile?

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:39

The politicians removed a lot of restrictions on the banks which is why it happened and the person who did the most shouting about too much red tape in the 12 months before it happened was Hague. Cutting those restrictions was a tory policy.

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:41

Folk are reaslising that they have to decide soon and don't like the two main choices

Thing is I think the tories are screwed long term if they don't win this time because who do they have left to replace him

  • Pat W27/03/2010 at 01:41

Folk are reaslising that they have to decide soon and don't like the two main choices

    Agreed. I've no idea what'll happen. I can't see a big turnout.

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:41

but most dont want to vote for LD, so no idea who id vote for

    They realise they won't win

I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:42

The worldwide free market was a little too free

Bush slashed regulations and a load of other countries decided they had to do the same to be competitive

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:42

Not really, just a more obvious one

true but even 3 months ago tories were ahead 10-17 points ahead, today they are 2 points ahead and on average about 5 at the moment, so somethings changed

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:42

    They realise they won't win

I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood

    its almost a certainty

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:43

    its almost a certainty

If so, the LD vote is very important

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:43

    They realise they won't win

I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood

Right now they are predicting a hung parliament with Cameron having the biggest share.

  • Pat W27/03/2010 at 01:43

Just realised I'm more tired than I thought. Going to get some sleep. I'll try to watch quali live but I can't promise to comment it, will probably have iplayer on fullscreen while lying in bed, rather than coming down for timing and such

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:43

    See ya Pat

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:43

true but even 3 months ago tories were ahead 10-17 points ahead, today they are 2 points ahead and on average about 5 at the moment, so somethings changed

And the nearer you get to an election the better the existing goverment does in the poles

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 01:44

Right now they are predicting a hung parliament with Cameron having the biggest share.

    yesterdays polling report says...

    36/34/17 (L/C/LD %)

  • Bassano27/03/2010 at 01:44

And the nearer you get to an election the better the existing goverment does in the poles

I think it'd be a good idea if we wrap the topic up while it's nice and neutral

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:45

If so, the LD vote is very important

The Scottish nationalists are campaigning on the basis that if they are very successful they could have enough votes to sway things so LD should be in a very influential position

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 01:45

Just realised I'm more tired than I thought. Going to get some sleep. I'll try to watch quali live but I can't promise to comment it, will probably have iplayer on fullscreen while lying in bed, rather than coming down for timing and such

    Hi Christine

That may be a good idea, at least this time a few people made some sensible points, we discussed the polls then moved on

    That's how it should be

    my phone died :(

Catherine was taking photos of the boys with the flag with her phone! It was probably too dark for them to work out but it would be soooo cool if they did and she had pictures of sidepodpeople!

I guess this is the first year of Heikki's career that he knows anyone with a Finnish flag is a fan of his and isn't holding it up for Kimi.

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:16

From all the F1 videos I've seen, only Melbourne has a proper area set up. I'm pretty sure, though, that there would've been a similar area in the old Spa paddock. Now that they've built a newer, larger paddock, I'm not sure if such an area still exists there.

it was quite a mob, but credit to him, he worked his way down the entire line whereas a lot of people sign a few and miss lots of people out. By the time he came out the crowd was quite small though compared to how it usually is so that may be why he came over.

  • Kathi27/03/2010 at 12:31

I have decided standing in one spot for up to 6 hours is awesome and I was crossing my fingers someone would want to do it at Spa too :D

    6 hours? erm...

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:31

I'll do anything to get nice pics so i'm more than happy to go F1 stalking with you :D plus you seem to have lots of luck with this kinda thing :)

The trick is that security guards lie. After Schumi left the guy was all 'he was the last one, I swear, I personally took Felipe out the back myself before' so most people left. After that Bruno and Felipe both came out.

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:32

    6 hours? erm...

today wasn't 6, qualy finished at 6 and we stood there until 10.... (its dedication, not stalking)

I have changed my goals though, now that I have seen Catherine I want to see her in daylight too.

  • Lady Snowcat27/03/2010 at 12:33

Oh.MY. Can he be like that too in Shanghai?

Similar to Spa they drive down an access road and get into the middle of the track without having to get up close and personal with fans....

The "proper" tracks tend to be like that as they have the infrastructure.. it's the temporary tracks like Melbourne and, dare I say it, Valencia, that are better at giving you these opportunities...

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:35

today wasn't 6, qualy finished at 6 and we stood there until 10.... (its dedication, not stalking)

i stood in selfridges for hours to wait for Jenson so i had a good place.. good things come to those who wait :)

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:36

Amy is persistent. If she says she is standing in one spot for 6 hours, she really does it.

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:36

Valencia good at something, eh? :P

Big pro about Shanghai: less people to compete with for Schumi's autograph (normally, less people in the stands is bad, but in this case, it's good)

Big con about Shanghai: as we saw in last year's ROC, the Chinese are nuts about Schumi more than anyone else.

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:37

Amy is persistent. If she says she is standing in one spot for 6 hours, she really does it.

:D Hehehe. Dare I ask you to describe Amy in 10 words or less...?

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:37

I think this amazing weekend has made me want to go to the Australian GP even more. If only f1 wasn't so expensive, and it wasn't so far away...

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:37

:D Hehehe. Dare I ask you to describe Amy in 10 words or less...?

You will need good shoes for all the standing and waiting.

I know I don't have a lot to compare it to but judging by the fun I have, the access you can get and the way the drivers rave about the atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend it for a trip in the future :)

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:38

You will need good shoes for all the standing and waiting.

oh my gooooooooood highlight of the day. That was more exciting than seeing Heikki again #sorryheikki

(When I saw him come out and saw he was with Catherine my first reaction was to grab Pamela and go 'OH MY GOD IT'S HER' #sorryagainheikki)

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:44

    #isjealous

Look at it this way: by the time Spa comes round, they'd already know Amy. ;)

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:44

    Crofty actually knew about sidepodcast.

  • Pamela27/03/2010 at 12:45

    Hi all,

Ant and Crofty were just lovely. So nice. What a way to start the day!

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:45

Christine drinking effect. Apparently its a long story

hehehehe i was the same when i saw Jessica and Jenson at Goodwood..

I wanna meet Crofty and Ant and say thank you to them for being so awesome. When Ant was at the Mercedes thing in the winter he didn't have time to stop to chat to fans

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:46

    One we have to hear.....

    Seconded!

  • Pamela27/03/2010 at 12:47

Crofty mentioned Christine getting drunk on free beer...?

I did almost start to hyperventilate when I spotted them. Had to call Jeremy for back up!

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:47

    ...Christine drinking?? *confused*

I was too. But i'm not spreading stories I know nothing about.

Ant and Croft were the two most approachable people you have ever met

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:47

Ant and Crofty were just lovely. So nice. What a way to start the day!

Tell them about how they remembered us!

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:47

    Crofty actually knew about sidepodcast.

yeah, he's met Christine and Mr C before... Silverstone 2007 i think? and then maybe 08 and 09?

can we please please please have a guest post with highlights and stories from each day?

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:48

hehehehe i was the same when i saw Jessica and Jenson at Goodwood..

jessica and john were with Jenson but they were too far away to get photos of. Damn the darkness when everyone leaves the paddock!

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:48

I was too. But i'm not spreading stories I know nothing about.

Will have to pester ask Christine when she gets up, then. :D

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:48

can we please please please have a guest post with highlights and stories from each day?

I am kind of wanting to write a guest post just because each day has been super awesome!

    Why?

  • Pamela27/03/2010 at 12:49

Yes, I felt super daggy with the other BBC guys laughing at us!

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:50

OO! and Ant was wondering about how we listened to them ;-)

He knows there are "ways" on the internet.

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:50

Crofty mentioned Christine getting drunk on free beer...?

Christine and Mr C mentioned it in the 2007 silverstone special podcast. The first time they camped with Honda. There was a quiz evening one of the evenings, and an open bar another evening?..

  • Pamela27/03/2010 at 12:50

    We were dithering fools! haha

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:50

jessica and john were with Jenson but they were too far away to get photos of. Damn the darkness when everyone leaves the paddock!

yay for them being there! :)

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:50

    DO IT! :D

its funny because after seeing Heikki on Thursday I was like ''tomorrow won't be as cool" and then the pit thing happened so it was "Saturday won't be as cool" and then Ant and Crofty were at breakfast and Catherine took pictures of us! So who knows what Sunday might bring. I hope it's something cool.

  • RG27/03/2010 at 12:50

Christine and Mr C mentioned it in the 2007 silverstone special podcast. The first time they camped with Honda. There was a quiz evening one of the evenings, and an open bar another evening?..

    That was 2008 wasn't it?

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:50

    Why?

We must have looked like complete idiot fans :D

Everyone else just chase the drivers

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:50

OO! and Ant was wondering about how we listened to them ;-)

He knows there are "ways" on the internet.

Of course they do. They're not dumb - just that they can't really... talk about it. :)

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:51

OO! and Ant was wondering about how we listened to them ;-)

they said that they have nooo idea what countries get to hear them as they don't know who the feed gets sold to.

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:51

We must have looked like complete idiot fans :D

Haha! No, you're the smart ones. You go to the people you don't have to share with anyone else. ;)

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:51

    That was 2008 wasn't it?

they camped with them twice? the second time was in the bread box which nearly killed christine.

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:53

First thing they did was shook my hand though, and they got up for photos with both the girls

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:53

First thing they did was shook my hand though, and they got up for photos with both the girls

    Very nice of them. :)

  • lou27/03/2010 at 12:54

First thing they did was shook my hand though, and they got up for photos with both the girls

so between Crofty knowing Mr and Mrs C, and now Amy.. the chances are he'll stop and chat or say hi in Spa... :D

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:55

    Very nice of them. :)

It really was. Pity I forgot to mention Sebring

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:55

Now, should I mention Leggard? ;-)

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:56

Now, should I mention Leggard? ;-)

    By all means. :)

  • Pamela27/03/2010 at 12:56

I think I apologised to Ant 3 times for interrupting their breakfast (which they had already finished). But he was lovely, but kinda quiet. David stole the show, chatting with us like friends.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 12:56

    'Morning folks,

After broken up spells of slumber, I have arisen... to rain showers outside.

    :/

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:57

Now, should I mention Leggard? ;-)

hahaha. It was a very BBC-rific day today. I saw Jake, Lee, Eddie, TED and DC for the first time after seeing Legard and Brundle yesterday.

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:57

    By all means. :)

Twas quite funny. Jeremy called him over so Pam then had to get an autograph

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 12:57

Jeremy made me get his autograph in my GP guide.

  • paul27/03/2010 at 12:58

Ooooh. Did you get to talk to them?

    Jake didn't come over :-(

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 12:58

Ooooh. Did you get to talk to them?

Legard walked over to us today going 'was that better? was that better?' and I have no idea whether he was referring to the action on the track, or his commentating.

    FTA:

Having made the most of the free bar at the Honda marquee, we went back to our tent, where I passed out. Don’t drink, kids, it’s not smart, it’s not clever, and you’ll miss the late night fireworks.

Hmmm. Says it all, really. :D

Also, odd to find that it had no comments. Such a post now *cough*AMY*cough* would easily have hundreds of comments. ;)

True... I was actually wondering as Petrov got eliminated from Q1, if it was Glock or Renault who ended negotiations. Was it Glock?

  • RG27/03/2010 at 13:57

I'd imagine it was Timo. From what I heard he wanted to be involved in a new team. And I don't think he was too certain about the future of Renault at the time.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 13:58

I don't think anyone was sure of Renault's future at the time - remember Kubica was also publicly questioning Renault's involvement too

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 13:59

aww don't loose hope R.G... Amy may even be able to get a pic of him...

ooh glock is one person i did not see today! I did on thursday though?

we were just discussing moving all the comments from those threads back into the daily :)

tis okay, we tried and we failed.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:05

absolutely. but we worked out to tidy up the comments into the right threads now would take make three whole days of admin for us :)

oh really? okay, i look in a sec.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:09

on a similar subject, we'll blog about this next week, but we were contemplating the idea of dropping the daily thread concept all together and just having a page where conversation just happens.

like twitter basically. a long stream of never-ending conversation that doesn't need to jump threads at midnight and no-one needs to worry about where they comment?

    any thoughts?

we keep threaded conversation for live commenting and "on a specific topic" discussion. it's basically a simple change to the realtime page to remove the thread dropdown. everything remains the same.

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 14:10

if there is no drop down does that mean I'd need to use LCLT for other things?

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 14:11

...like twitter basically. a long stream of never-ending conversation...

Sounds like an episode of the Twilight Zone

    :o

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 14:12

...like twitter basically. a long stream of never-ending conversation...

I like having the daily because it makes it easy for me to have cut-off points when I play 'lets read every single comment made on this site'

but I do appreciate the midnight thing combined with different time zones causes a lot of work for you guys.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:12

if there is no drop down does that mean I'd need to use LCLT for other things?

actually no. we could keep realtime as is, but create:

    sidepodcast.com/conversation

    for all generic discussion maybe?

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:15

But would the generic conversation thread be accessible from doohickey too? Makes it easier to switch between topics on a hot news day. I'm fine with it as long as page loading on Ye Olde isn't an issue.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:16

    hehehehehe :)

    not funny!

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 14:17

You'll all be happy to know that Sato has thrown his car clean off the track - missed the wall by about a few inches

    :o

hmm, might have to think about that. mixing threaded and non-threaded sound like a bigger nightmare than just selecting the correct thread.

  • lou27/03/2010 at 14:18

if we want to link back to a comment.. or find a comment that was a few days ago.. how would we find it, the awesome search?

  • lou27/03/2010 at 14:19

I bet christine laughed at your reaction :P

good point, google couldn't index pages that big. so that might be an issue.

i guess it would just be like a chat room, conversation happens and them moves on.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:20

I bet christine laughed at your reaction :P

she might be feeling a bit bad about waking me up :)

but I don't like things moving on when I am sleeping so I'd never be able to sleep again :D

hehehehe. will give it some more thought. it may not be the answer, but we know we don't like what we currently have either.

  • Amy27/03/2010 at 14:21

hehehehe. will give it some more thought. it may not be the answer, but we know we don't like what we currently have either.

fair enough. at the end of the day I always come back to its your site, do what you like, we shall adapt :D

    awwww

indeed. we did discuss this before when the first major changes to doohickey were made. i somewhat remember you wanting to be able to archive old discussions, which is why you weren't so keen on a chatroom format before. but then i guess there are other practical considerations now?

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 14:23

    seconded. :)

  • lou27/03/2010 at 14:23

but I don't like things moving on when I am sleeping so I'd never be able to sleep again :D

i'm the same... kinda i like to catch up with comments cause otherwise people can talk about something that i've noooo idea about. plus i may miss convos about cheese... ;)

however things change and we get used to them, we always adapt to spc whatever happens, and the same people will be here. no harm in trying out new things :)

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:23

fair enough. at the end of the day I always come back to its your site, do what you like, we shall adapt :D

it would be good not to have to hassle people anymore i think. which is what mostly appeals.

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:25

i somewhat remember you wanting to be able to archive old discussions, which is why you weren't so keen on a chatroom format before. but then i guess there are other practical considerations now?

that's true, i still do. i think i'm almost conceding defeat and saying "human nature tends to do this". forcing order on people, ourselves included, doesn't work so well.

  • lou27/03/2010 at 14:26

it would be good not to have to hassle people anymore i think. which is what mostly appeals.

you guys do so much for us, if it makes your lives easier go for it!

maybe we can adapt a page on the wiki for some discussions (like anything to do with meetups) or if we want to share a link with a particular person?

  • me27/03/2010 at 14:29

you guys do so much for us, if it makes your lives easier go for it!

it's not really hard at the moment. more that it feels like we're fighting a losing battle. conversation wants/needs to be free, not put into arbitrary boxes.

you guys do so much for us, if it makes your lives easier go for it!

we'll have a think, and then blog and see what people suggest.

Mr C when you have some spare time on your hands and want to try something new for you netbook, Lubuntu works pretty well with skype. It's not a official Ubuntu version (yet), and it still looks a bit unfinished but all important bits are there. It also has a netbook version (you can choose it after installing in the dropdown at the login window) and it is tiny. Just 1.9 GB on my netbook at the moment.

    download

    I struggle to understand the electorate at the best of times but I can't figure out why Cameron is not well clear in the polls just now. We have a huge recession and a bit of scandal going round and a party that has been in government for 30 years. How is he not winning by a mile? {Comment #74}

Because of those of us (particularly in the Labour heartlands) who think our choice is between the Conservatives who know they're Conservatives and the Conservatives who think they're Labour. We still remember the mess the Conservatives left the country in last time they were in power, so we don't want a Conservative-style government, but that's all the choice we're being offered, so we might as well pick at random or not vote at all. A palatable government isn't being offered as a choice (there are smaller parties who may or may not do better but have no chance of gaining seats because of big-party inertia combined with a total lack of promotion by any party, at least in this area).

I'll probably end up voting Labour because I live in a constituency with one of the few MPs in the country who seems to be capable of representing a constituency properly without falling into the traps of power-chasing or placing party above constituency. If that particular MP decides not to stand, I might as well roll a dice in the election booth to determine who to vote for because all the candidates are likely to be equally damaging.

  • Pat W27/03/2010 at 16:38

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2010 at 16:39

Oh, and the Conservatives had almost as large a proportion of its MPs affected by the expenses scandal as Labour. I think this election will see record abstentions and spoiled papers.

  • Journeyer27/03/2010 at 16:42

Indeed, Alia's right. Many have said that if Cameron wins, even he knows it's not a vote for the Tories, it's just a vote against Labour. And not everyone will vote Tory just because they want to diss Labour. This partly explains why the BNP, for example, is getting a lot of attention when it shouldn't: because too many people have become disillusioned by mainstream (Labour, Tory, LDP) pols.

Hello everyone. I watched qualfiying in bed this morning (hooray for new netbook plus iplayer), and in the breaks I tried to keep up with comments. I have no idea what anybody said about anything as I turned it off to go back to sleep, and went out when I got up.. Anything notable going on?

    Belated happy birthday Pat

    Anyone who wants to become a politician shouldn't be allowed :) {Comment #81}

How's this for a solution? Make the parliamentary elections a lottery. Every British citizen above a minimum age (16 or 18 would be fine) would be entered and every year, 600 people would be randomly selected to be Parliament. If you "won the lottery" you would have to serve as an MP for the full term unless you had a good excuse (e.g. serving a prison sentence or have a severe health issue that would make it impossible to fulfil the duty). Cabinets could be decided by ballot of the new parliament. This would encourage a healthier balance of thought patterns and reduce the power of specific ideaologies to divert politicians from finding ways to improve the country.

It would also increase interests in politics because it would make sense to pay attention to something you might have to do during your lifetime.

Off out for a meal with Dad & clan later as I was away for the 'event' itself and did something with Mum the weekend before (it being Mothers Day). I should have a shower and iron a shirt I suppose

    I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood {Comment #105}

I reckon that's very likely, hence why the BBC has postponed The Apprentice until 2011 (its star, Sir Alan Sugar, is a government business "tsar", there are broadcasting restrictions once an election date is announced and a hung parliament is likely to lead to another election before the year is out).

I agree. Hanging around for hours was annoying. It does feel a little flat but that's fine. Part of that is because it was so long ago, normally it would have finished 3.5hrs ago?

That's where I get most of my data from. Maybe Jackie could look at how the average laptime comes down over the course of a session to show why it's best to leave it until the last minute to make a run?

That's a big fail for the OWG who were supposed to be REDUCING Downforce!

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2010 at 18:50

Sato is starting 11th; not sure where Hunter-Reay is 7th - the times still aren't up. As far as I can tell, race coverage starts at either 7.30pm or 8.30

Was the lap record broken because the car was on fumes though .. previously it was fuelled for partial distance. We could look up last years times and deduct the fuel weights to see if it is really faster

Anyone hoping for a news item relating to a PR stunt gone wrong will be disappointed to know the story on the other end of the link is re-telling #492 of Hamilton's over-exuberant end to Friday...

i have nothing to do. for the second race weekend in a row, i've nothing pressing to do on a saturday evening. christine's working on digest and then we're going to watch a film.

i amazed at how much we've managed to reduce our workload this year, it's like we're normal people. 19 races doesn't even seem that bad.

yep, i've seen it once or twice and it looks great!! i never knew lydennhill was literally 20mins away from us. yep, that's some of the advice Emily Davenport gave me too. Buckmore Park is pretty close by, however i'm gonna have to focus on that in the summer, it's a little bit further away and therefore will probably need to wait till after exams.

totally true, one of the main reasons i prefer to cover junior stuff is because the guys actually want to talk to you

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 22:02

    Lens envy

and camera envy.. they guy has TWO dslrs... hehe

oh goodness... i'm putting one alarm clock on 5am and one at 6am.. just in case the alarms change (with the clocks).. i don't want to miss the race!

:) Emma said she'd ask some of her british drivers if they'd let me work with them, or shadow them for a race or two but that will have to wait till when she comes back i think :) (am in no rush... i want to pass my exams! ;) )

i've always been a bit shy about that kinda thing.. just cause i'm scared of making the wrong impression. Hearing gascoyne basically saying it's only really a good thing kinda confirmed to me that as long as it's done politely it's actually a good thing :)

There is a story possibly appocryphal that if you go to a rabbi and tell him you want to convert to Judaism he will slam the door in your face the first twice then on the third occasion welcome you in.

yep, from what i can see there are several ways into f1.. theirs the Sutton way, of following a driver up (which only happens if you're really lucky..), the Davenport way of working with a specific circuit for a number of years before getting a chance into f1 (it was 5 years for her which seems like no time at all! = lucky), or theirs working for a newspaper or agency.

  • lou27/03/2010 at 22:22

i think slowly being in contact with photographers and doing research has helped me gain confidence and things. Strangely the rejections from unis has helped me too. not everyone is going to be positive about my work, not everyone is going to help, i just need to stick at it, and grab every opportunity that i come across.

  • Adie27/03/2010 at 22:23

You gotta be pushy - but in a nice way. It's something that comes with practice - believe me! Good luck making it happen thought, if you want it badly enough (which you do) something will present itself.

You can absolutely bet that some people won't like your work and will make their views very clear. Especially on the internet. The normal hum response is to over-estimate the negatives and under-estimate the positives.

Apparently Calor do LPG so it is almost certainly that and not Calor gas as we know it

  • Paul27/03/2010 at 22:43

lots of people us LPG here in oz with regular engines. Not much of a change is needed

  • Jon Waldock27/03/2010 at 22:43

Apparently Calor do LPG so it is almost certainly that and not Calor gas as we know it

yeah, the car is LPG so that makes sense

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 22:45

lots of people us LPG here in oz with regular engines. Not much of a change is needed

LPG is used here although not in large numbers. Calor gas is normally propane or butane used in domestic heaters and I can't imagine you can use that in a piston engine. Not sure why I think that as it is just a hydrocarbon like octane but shorter and lighter

  • Steven Roy27/03/2010 at 22:46

    It is LPG

To get measured for his air hostess uniform?

  • Pat W27/03/2010 at 23:44

Hello again. Meal was excellent, new-ish mediterranean place in town with very nice morroccan lamb and bottle of red wine. although oddly it closed early, we got there at 8 and left at 10 after 3 courses plus coffee, very un-mediterranean, I'm surprised i don;t have indegestion we ate so fast (''cos it was very nice),

Strangely feel uncharacterstically tired for this hour so commenting in bed from netbook, unable to see keyboard properly hence typos...

  • me27/03/2010 at 23:44

To get measured for his air hostess uniform?

ah, could be. i figured he was saying the branson suite was a bit small or something. clearly it's gone right over me head.

That's why I'm in bed early, but I'm not sure I want to sleep yet. My bodyclock is a bit messed up right now so maybe it is for the best.

perhaps, but you wouldn't be able to just bump into F1 people at Silverstone or any other middle-of-nowhere race.

  • me28/03/2010 at 00:08

no. at silverstone, you can see them leave the paddock, but they're behind a fence. they get into cars and vanish.

  • Bassano28/03/2010 at 00:15

no. because the clocks go forward at 1am.

At least one person will be late for early shift tomorrow, always happens

(They never get it wrong and come in early in the autumn)
