Hello and welcome to Saturday! It's David Coulthard's birthday today, and the man is in Australia along with the rest of the BBC team, gearing up for qualifying later today. We're doing the same, and there'll be plenty of threads to follow along with later. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:
- Stuart Codling has a presence on the brand new Formula Santander site, which seems to be a slice of F1 news and gossip from the major sponsor of Ferrari, McLaren and several races. Holly Samos is also writing on the website, and although it's not a beauty to look at, and there's still a few kinks to be worked out, it looks like there might be some good content.
- We just wanted to highlight a tweet from Renault who said: Did you know we published blogs from our fans, too? http://cot.ag/c1wUX6 Come on aspiring writers and Renault fans, get scribbling That seems very cool, doesn't it? You'd better get writing, Renault want to hear from you!
- Finally, we did our Fantasy Racers Reminder yesterday, and although it is too late to make changes to your team now, it's worth reading as it's a fabulous guest post from Gavin. If you'd like to feature your team in an upcoming reminder, please let me know, or pop your name as a volunteer in the wiki.
- Whilst we're talking about predictions and such like, don't forget to post your predictions to the Sofa F1 championship as well. Also, remind me to do mine, please!
That should do it for now. Stay tuned to Sidepodcast as we have lots of field reporters running around Albert Park and it's fabulous fun watching their progress. I will see you in the comments.
...is boiling an egg.
Hello Sidepodcast,
following the discussion at the last race about overtaking being practically impossible due to the aerodynamics of the cars. Has the FIA thought about a rules change that instead of altering refueling or not or other such examples, instead will regulate the aerodynamics so that cars can overtake easily?
Ta
keep up the good work.
Peter
Hello folks
Home from work :)
Hi Alison
Hey Alison. :)
Don't be silly, that'd be a good idea :)
Hello
Hey Peter. I think they've tried to do a lot of that already - like in the rules for 2009, which banned most forms of winglets. Trouble is, engineers are so good nowadays that someone has always found a loophole to go through, and if it's effective, everyone just copies it.
hi
They should change it, but they probably won't.
They have spent years trying to restrict aero but they only ever want to make minor changes when major surgery is required
Hi Pat
Hi. I've been semi-lurking all evening.
Thanks folks
by major surgery i presume we mean tiny front ad back wings or none at all? I was thinnking that the reason they wouldn't do that is because essentially it do de-value the brand of F1 being the best and make it just another formula ford, correct?
excuse the spelling mistakes!
I'm fretting about trains again :(
Awww. Why?
Pretty much. F1 is supposed to be the fastest brand of racing around, on road courses at least.
I'm just stressed about strikes and stuff.
Fly?
If you need to firm up your plans buy a flexible bus ticket
I mean massive major surgery. I have tried to explain what I want in comments before but it doesn't work so I wrote an article on it last week.
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/22/f1-how-it-should-be
It's annoying me a lot about the disturbed air on the cars, because the technology is there to mostly cure, but for some reason F1 continues to ignore it.
Irritating...
It's too expensive. I can afford the bus but only if I book an advanced non-refundable ticket. They won't agree to refund my train ticket until they've confirmed what services they intend to run which will be after the cut-off for the cheaper bus tickets....
Cheers,
Another thing, on the subject, can anyone explain in laymans terms the McLaren tube thing that is being discussed? A diagram or photo would be brill if anyone can point me in the right direction?
If you need technocal you need Scarbs
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/235/
Michael using a most interesting analogy on the R5L F1 Preview show. Is a soccer game that ended 0-0 less exciting than a basketball game that ended 100-100? Not necessarily.
F1 is not like motorcycle racing or basketball. It's F1, and F1 has always had less overtaking than other forms of motorsport. F1 can be improved, for sure, but F1 has always been like this in the past.
Also, he mentions that many people have thought about it for many years, but it's not easy to improve, but there is always some form of excitement there.
I can really sympathise Alison
I was unsure if I was going on holiday up until the day I was flying
Then I didn't know if I'd get stuck there
Michael knows nothing about basketball it seems.
When it's 100-100 there will be overtime till there is a winner.
I think I'm going to end up driving which I had decided not to do. That's why we booked the flights we did. It's a flipping long way to drive particularly late at night.
So you've cancelled your bookings, then? How far away is it?
do the strikes effect you?
No, they won't let me. They'll spend a couple of weeks faffing before deciding but I'm travelling right over the strike times. I can't see how a train is going to run the full length of the country.
Unfortunately, that is an industry standard
I wonder if they'll offer a bus replacement service
Yeah I understand that. But I can't afford to end up having paid for two trips. Nor can I afford the trip without discount for advanced booking. I don't want a refund on my tickets, I want to travel.
and thats how they wont give you your money back.
No, that won't suit everyone and the terms of the ticket are changed so they should be duty bound to offer a free rebook or cancellation
but they'll be changed now rather than when alison had booked her ticket?
There's still time to avert the strikes
When the BA strikes were announced we firmed our flying plans 3 - 5 days in advance
The train stuff will probably be similar
I'm not concerned I won't get my money back. I'm skilled enough at causing a fuss whether it's a right or not. I'm concerned that they'll try and rectify the situation or whatever and I'll turn up to travel and not be able to. The train company at that point give you a refund and tell you to sort yourself out.....
They have no interest in the cost of short-notice alternative arrangements.
Keep an eye on their website for details and have the car as your back-up plan
Almost with the gang that met Crofty and Ant. Sucks to be me but I'm so happy for the others! I'm sure they'll share they're photos :-)
But it's like 500 miles :(
and a good few hours less travel time
You do need a back up plan though
Maybe split the journey over 2 days and stay overnight somewhere
It's unfortunate but there's likely to be increased cost somewhere unless the strike is called off
thats all well and good but if shes coming down to pick nick up then she'll be a day late
Prepare to leave a day early or alter plans
There's not much 'win' anywhere really
I really really can't. It's the easter holidays, I can't take another day's leave.
cheapo Ryanair flight?
I don't think they do internal flights
I bet those dates are suddenly more expensive though
I checked the price of flights before I booked the trains. Only BA appear to fly the route and it was too expensive.
its all a farce, they've done it at that time to mess labour up a few weeks before the election.
Out of interest Alison, what were you quoted?
[If you don't mind me asking]
I think the trade unions would prefer their mates in power than the tories Jon
This was probably covered at some point yesterday, but a new post from me:
About £100ish
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-transport/7521340/Four-day-rail-strike-after-Easter-weekend-to-bring-chaos.html
I doubt I'd get it for under £70
I can look though, I don't mind
NCL - LHR?
not the best example of it, but most news outlets are running that story too
Yeah.
Dates, out & back?
And? That's more of an editorial than anything else. It's not a factual report.
Jon is right though this is not the first time the unions have done this kind of thing just before an election and given the tories a free ride. There was a massive strike in 79 and all the tory posters had the slogan Labour isn't working. Thatcher wone a huge majority.
Seems to be 80 return on initial glance
I want to travel late on the 8th or early on the 9th and return Sat 17th
of course, but you're not going to get Bob Crow saying that they're doing it on purpose.
and tories need all the help they can get, their lead is quite alot less than it has been
There's one return flight that's reasonable, 11:40am
£78.20
Okay. I really don't mind a very early flight. I was going to get the train overnight.
The outbound is 20:15 arriving 21:25
I'll see what they say about my ticket. Thanks for your help :) I just could do without this.
I struggle to understand the electorate at the best of times but I can't figure out why Cameron is not well clear in the polls just now. We have a huge recession and a bit of scandal going round and a party that has been in government for 30 years. How is he not winning by a mile?
Just shout, Nick has my mobile number if you need it
No one trusts him
[aside from the fact he's a politician]
It's incredible how much of that fare is tax
They are all politicans. I am starting to believe that it is because Cameron and Osborne have unfeasibly shiny faces.
Right folks - I've had a non-stop day since yesterday morning free practice. I'm going to catch an hours nap...
i hate this conversation with my grandma earlier actually, she's been a die hard conservative since i was born and even she now dosent know who to vote for. her opinion was that he hasnt attacked brown enough for the state of britain
Anyone who wants to become a politician shouldn't be allowed :)
Catch you later
Cheers Leigh
*have
'Cos he's a Tory and people have long memories.
Okay thankyou :)
I'm sure he'll just tell me I'm being daft....
6 months ago i maybe would have voted for him but nott now, not sure why though
He will
Not that it's the right way to go, it's just the way it is
The banks caused the worldwide recession, not left or right wing parties
night
I just can't see normal people seeing they have anything in common with him. I am sure the fact that the first thing he plans to do to the economy is cu inheritance tax is not exactly a big vote winner
That too
oh of course, but it makes a better story if you blame the guy holding the controls
If you want to be a cop or a politician the fact you want to do it means you shouldn't be allowed to
Agreed
Not really, just a more obvious one
I understand that argument but 6 months ago he was looking a lot better.
Folk are reaslising that they have to decide soon and don't like the two main choices
The politicians removed a lot of restrictions on the banks which is why it happened and the person who did the most shouting about too much red tape in the 12 months before it happened was Hague. Cutting those restrictions was a tory policy.
I <3 Gordon
The worldwide free market was a little too free
but most dont want to vote for LD, so no idea who id vote for
Thing is I think the tories are screwed long term if they don't win this time because who do they have left to replace him
Agreed. I've no idea what'll happen. I can't see a big turnout.
They realise they won't win
I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood
Bush slashed regulations and a load of other countries decided they had to do the same to be competitive
true but even 3 months ago tories were ahead 10-17 points ahead, today they are 2 points ahead and on average about 5 at the moment, so somethings changed
its almost a certainty
If so, the LD vote is very important
Right now they are predicting a hung parliament with Cameron having the biggest share.
Just realised I'm more tired than I thought. Going to get some sleep. I'll try to watch quali live but I can't promise to comment it, will probably have iplayer on fullscreen while lying in bed, rather than coming down for timing and such
See ya Pat
And the nearer you get to an election the better the existing goverment does in the poles
yesterdays polling report says...
36/34/17 (L/C/LD %)
I think it'd be a good idea if we wrap the topic up while it's nice and neutral
The Scottish nationalists are campaigning on the basis that if they are very successful they could have enough votes to sway things so LD should be in a very influential position
Night Pat
night pat
Labour are ahead? That's insane
oops
my fail, C/L/LD
I have to say it is great we can have discussions like this without anyone pushing their own beliefs
I agree
It's only 2% either way and polls tend to have 5% error margin
http://www.formula1.com/wi/597x478/sutton/2010/d10aus293.jpg
"This is the brake pedal, this is the accelerator pedal and this is the special third pedal.
What did you say your name was again? Adrian Newley?"
haha we have video!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8590326.stm
Where have I see that apologetic face before? Ah yes, this time last year
Sounds like the Australian Legard commentating on the incident
No definitive statements
Both of these statements are true, but thanks to Bassano for keeping the peace.
I may add No Politics to the commenting policy.
Hi Christine
That may be a good idea, at least this time a few people made some sensible points, we discussed the polls then moved on
That's how it should be
hi everybody. ready for FP3/qualy?
Hi Guille
I was hoping to be catching some snores during the first in anticipation of the second
I hope I'll be up until the end of qualy...
I (heart) David Mitchell :D
Do you think he would marry me?
almost certainly not
#sorryAlison
i should imagine Nick may have some 'issues' with it too
NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I doubt he'd notice :P
Mitchell admitted that he had "been in so many situations when I've just said nothing to someone I've fancied,"[6] and he has not dated anyone "for six or seven years", and is occasionally propositioned by fans.
ref
and that is why its a definitely not ;)
Awwwww he's just so cute
you (royal you) would feel quite stupid being around him though
quick go to the kitchen to get dinner. see you in FP3
Why?
I think he is saying you are a thicko.
#notstirring
he's amazingly smart and knowledgable. just me?
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/27/live-australia-2010-free-practice-3/
oi!
Yeah he seems smart. You're saying I'm not?
See you folks later
I'm gonna watch a bit of this with the timer on
corrr i cant say anything to you without sounding bad :P
no i wasnt saying that at all, but if i were to spend any time with him i would feel completely stupid, he just had an amazing mind
Bye
How did we get through all the politics without anyone saying a word out of place and you can't explaing to Alison that she is not that bright without upsetting her?
Hope this helps
oh.my.goodness
GAH
:D
I guess it didn't help then. It sounded so much better in my head.
I think she will be very happy with David Mitchell and Nick can have his partner that dresses up like the female welder in dane competitions. Perfect
I would love to see Jon's face when I got that reaction to that comment
Are you suggesting that's what I look like???
dance not dane. At least I don't think she was Danish
No but if you are dumping Nick the least you can do is set him up. Besides you don't want Robert Webb cramping your style and constantly going on about work
I'm pretty sure he's already married.
David was the best man
How do you know that? Are you lot stalking comedians now?
Wikipedia knows all
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/27/live-australia-2010-qualifying/
probs shoulda been in the daily...
jenson on the homepage for lou and rocket: http://sidepodcast.com/
and with that, we must sleep. thank you everybody, catch you in a few hours.
Is it wrong that watching Fast Food Nation is making me hungry?
We just spoke to Karun Chandok and he said it prob wasn't his mum that commented. He pulled out his blackberry and entered www.sidepodcast.com !!! He even double checked that he had it right.
He now knows about Christines rankings. What a legend!
Karyn was the best. Spike to us for a while. Then Pam got Webber to sign my het
Karun of corse
amazini!
M Schacher winked at Pam. Is he nice now?
Amy, Heikki is locked out of his hotel room, go rescue him!
Bruno Senna was super nice too
I tweeted her on this and haven't seen any mention of her since...
Hope she wasn't trampled in the rush...
Hope Heikki wasn't trampled in the rush...
This fron the JA twittery...
I bet I know who he was talking about...
HAHA! :D
The Sidepodfriends of Australia have really made an impact on the paddock, that's for sure! :D
Can that man be even more amazing.
Hey everyone, again.
Well, if he personally confirmed it wasn't his mom by checking the website, then yes, yes he can. :D
Hello, folks.
Karun really needs more Christine points. He was that nice
Morning....oh... Afternoon
I'm hoping everyone is having a nice sleep/nice time in Ausi/ nice day.
my phone died :(
Catherine was taking photos of the boys with the flag with her phone! It was probably too dark for them to work out but it would be soooo cool if they did and she had pictures of sidepodpeople!
I guess this is the first year of Heikki's career that he knows anyone with a Finnish flag is a fan of his and isn't holding it up for Kimi.
we mentioned they were like a takeoff of Castrol's rankings and I said 'but they're better than Castrol's' and he laughed and said "I bet!"
Between Karun's awesomeness and how lovely Bruno was to speak to, HRT are quickly becoming my new favourite.
awwww!! :)
Awww! Hehehehe. :D
awesome!!
Christine's Rankings has found a new endorser! Hahaha! Now if only HRT had a better car... :)
Jenson came out and signed stuff too :) Lots of drivers did but Jarno didn't and I may have yelled at him "this is why we like your team mate more than you"
Between this and Thursday I think I have started a feud with him.
he was. Although he had a Blackberry (Booo)
we thought of you Mr Journeyer because a certain german came over and signed stuff and he never does so all the serious autograph hunters were freaking out. It was quite an epic scene.
I thought you went right by Jarno when he and Heikki shared an autograph table a few days ago? :P
I wonder if he has pictures to prove it... :D
We almost had to like Schumacher who signed things and took photos with people all the way down the line.
do you still dislike him? did he look happy? lol
heheheheheh i'm sure he'd have evidence and paperwork to support why he didn't bother to sign things lol
I have a picture to prove I did this!
Can Lukeh fix it so I don't look so awful? :D
Well, well, well... :D Too bad the paddock entrance in Shanghai is a lot tougher to get to... Still, I'm hopeful for my shot in 3 weeks time. ;)
Oh.MY. Can he be like that too in Shanghai? Please? Pretty please? :D
there was one German lady there and he stopped and took the time to take a photo of them together with her camera. He was, dare I say it, #confidential, quite nice.
A few people almost collapsed.
Wow... Amy said it! I'm impressed. Mighty impressed. :D
hehehehe :D can we stand by the paddock entrance in Spa please? i wanna have experiences like this.. it sounds like the best weekend ever!
That must've been a stampede, almost. :O
of course I just got home to read all the stories about him whining that everyone held him up and now I'm like 'typical!'
He was also wearing awful trousers
Well, he wasn't talking about the fans, was he? I'm sure he wasn't the only driver complaining too. ;)
As for his trousers... Well, I've accepted his awful fashion sense a LONG time ago. :P
No almost about it. I was wondering where all these people came from suddenly
They came from the hills, from the beaches, from the streets... Everywhere, I'm sure. Schumi fans are in the thousands, if not millions... :D
I have decided standing in one spot for up to 6 hours is awesome and I was crossing my fingers someone would want to do it at Spa too :D I don't know if any other tracks have a nice wee area set up like Melbourne does though, which makes it hard
From all the F1 videos I've seen, only Melbourne has a proper area set up. I'm pretty sure, though, that there would've been a similar area in the old Spa paddock. Now that they've built a newer, larger paddock, I'm not sure if such an area still exists there.
Not quite the same in Spa...
The drivers drive down a VIP road so it's not easy to get close up...
I'll do anything to get nice pics so i'm more than happy to go F1 stalking with you :D plus you seem to have lots of luck with this kinda thing :)
noooooo!!! bad times.. i'm sure Amy will find a way ;)
it was quite a mob, but credit to him, he worked his way down the entire line whereas a lot of people sign a few and miss lots of people out. By the time he came out the crowd was quite small though compared to how it usually is so that may be why he came over.
6 hours? erm...
The trick is that security guards lie. After Schumi left the guy was all 'he was the last one, I swear, I personally took Felipe out the back myself before' so most people left. After that Bruno and Felipe both came out.
today wasn't 6, qualy finished at 6 and we stood there until 10.... (its dedication, not stalking)
I have changed my goals though, now that I have seen Catherine I want to see her in daylight too.
Similar to Spa they drive down an access road and get into the middle of the track without having to get up close and personal with fans....
The "proper" tracks tend to be like that as they have the infrastructure.. it's the temporary tracks like Melbourne and, dare I say it, Valencia, that are better at giving you these opportunities...
i stood in selfridges for hours to wait for Jenson so i had a good place.. good things come to those who wait :)
Amy is persistent. If she says she is standing in one spot for 6 hours, she really does it.
Valencia good at something, eh? :P
Big pro about Shanghai: less people to compete with for Schumi's autograph (normally, less people in the stands is bad, but in this case, it's good)
Big con about Shanghai: as we saw in last year's ROC, the Chinese are nuts about Schumi more than anyone else.
:D Hehehe. Dare I ask you to describe Amy in 10 words or less...?
I think this amazing weekend has made me want to go to the Australian GP even more. If only f1 wasn't so expensive, and it wasn't so far away...
I think just the one will do, and persistent is it
You will need good shoes for all the standing and waiting.
I know I don't have a lot to compare it to but judging by the fun I have, the access you can get and the way the drivers rave about the atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend it for a trip in the future :)
I would wait all the time in the world for more of this http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dsc07606-medium-jpg
Joe loves it too... plus Albert Park looks so pretty!
:D hehehe *makes note to pack walking boots for Spa*
plus you doubled the value of your hat! perhaps.
AMY!!!! i've just seen!!... you met Ant and Crofty??!!!!!!!
Pah, Late comer. We were there chatting for ages
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#isjealous
HAHA! :D
I do... and Oz is definitely one of the best....
Mortgage your granny and GO...
oh my gooooooooood highlight of the day. That was more exciting than seeing Heikki again #sorryheikki
(When I saw him come out and saw he was with Catherine my first reaction was to grab Pamela and go 'OH MY GOD IT'S HER' #sorryagainheikki)
Look at it this way: by the time Spa comes round, they'd already know Amy. ;)
Crofty actually knew about sidepodcast.
Felipe Baby effect?
Hi all,
Ant and Crofty were just lovely. So nice. What a way to start the day!
Christine drinking effect. Apparently its a long story
Hey Pamela. ;)
...Christine drinking?? *confused*
One we have to hear.....
hehehehe i was the same when i saw Jessica and Jenson at Goodwood..
I wanna meet Crofty and Ant and say thank you to them for being so awesome. When Ant was at the Mercedes thing in the winter he didn't have time to stop to chat to fans
Seconded!
Crofty mentioned Christine getting drunk on free beer...?
I did almost start to hyperventilate when I spotted them. Had to call Jeremy for back up!
I was too. But i'm not spreading stories I know nothing about.
Ant and Croft were the two most approachable people you have ever met
Tell them about how they remembered us!
yeah, he's met Christine and Mr C before... Silverstone 2007 i think? and then maybe 08 and 09?
can we please please please have a guest post with highlights and stories from each day?
jessica and john were with Jenson but they were too far away to get photos of. Damn the darkness when everyone leaves the paddock!
Will have to
pesterask Christine when she gets up, then. :DI am kind of wanting to write a guest post just because each day has been super awesome!
DO IT! :D
The other BBC guys were having a good laugh at us
Why?
Yes, I felt super daggy with the other BBC guys laughing at us!
OO! and Ant was wondering about how we listened to them ;-)
He knows there are "ways" on the internet.
Christine and Mr C mentioned it in the 2007 silverstone special podcast. The first time they camped with Honda. There was a quiz evening one of the evenings, and an open bar another evening?..
We were dithering fools! haha
yay for them being there! :)
its funny because after seeing Heikki on Thursday I was like ''tomorrow won't be as cool" and then the pit thing happened so it was "Saturday won't be as cool" and then Ant and Crofty were at breakfast and Catherine took pictures of us! So who knows what Sunday might bring. I hope it's something cool.
That was 2008 wasn't it?
We must have looked like complete idiot fans :D
Everyone else just chase the drivers
Of course they do. They're not dumb - just that they can't really... talk about it. :)
they said that they have nooo idea what countries get to hear them as they don't know who the feed gets sold to.
Haha! No, you're the smart ones. You go to the people you don't have to share with anyone else. ;)
they camped with them twice? the second time was in the bread box which nearly killed christine.
First thing they did was shook my hand though, and they got up for photos with both the girls
Very nice of them. :)
so between Crofty knowing Mr and Mrs C, and now Amy.. the chances are he'll stop and chat or say hi in Spa... :D
It really was. Pity I forgot to mention Sebring
Now, should I mention Leggard? ;-)
By all means. :)
I think I apologised to Ant 3 times for interrupting their breakfast (which they had already finished). But he was lovely, but kinda quiet. David stole the show, chatting with us like friends.
'Morning folks,
After broken up spells of slumber, I have arisen... to rain showers outside.
:/
hahaha. It was a very BBC-rific day today. I saw Jake, Lee, Eddie, TED and DC for the first time after seeing Legard and Brundle yesterday.
Twas quite funny. Jeremy called him over so Pam then had to get an autograph
Ooooh. Did you get to talk to them?
Jeremy made me get his autograph in my GP guide.
Jake didn't come over :-(
Legard walked over to us today going 'was that better? was that better?' and I have no idea whether he was referring to the action on the track, or his commentating.
Hehe. :D
awkward some?
Christine mentioned meeting Crofty in this post... for those interested :)
he was really odd, he signed one thing then wandered off. Jake gave us a wave.
Yes!
Thank you, archives! ;)
I'm off to watch some of today's tv that I recorded. Hoping to see post quali press conference. See you Amy & Paul at 9am at Gate 1 :)
I will be a zombie! ZOMBIE!
Okey dokey
FTA:
Hmmm. Says it all, really. :D
Also, odd to find that it had no comments. Such a post now *cough*AMY*cough* would easily have hundreds of comments. ;)
Hahaha! Have you played Plants vs. Zombies, by any chance? ;)
have an amazing time tomorrow!!
Enjoy the race ;)
Enjoy tomorrow!
Time for a lot of tea, a little lunch, a shower, just in time for IRL practice. Zombification will commence soon
:D
Thanks all :)
hehehe this time last year i remember watching the repeat for quali... not sure it has the same appeal this year :)
I am waiting for the mp3 of 5 Live to download so I can listen to it because their commentary > Peter Windsor at the circuit. I am tempted by a kangaroo next year just for them:D
doooo ittt.... :)
I feel really bad that i missed FP3.. silly ipod and it's silly alarm not waking me up :(
i'm going to watch FP3 shortly - seems a bit weird to watch it after qually, but it happens sometimes
where can you watch it?
i scored a recording of it, so it's cooking on my laptop
aaaahhh okay :) have fun :)
:)
So that's Earth Hour sorted.
Anyone else around?
it's in like 3 hours right?
ours just finished. 2030-2130 local time.
what time will you have yours?
I am here.
i actually have no idea... american sites say 3 hours?...not sure what it is local time for us.. i shall investigate.
shouldn't you be sleeping? in preparation for an awesome awesome day tomorrow?
Still?? I am amazed at your endurance.
Or... you could be a zombie. :P
looks like it's 8:30 for us too :) now i just need to stay awake till then ;)
ooh, you're joining too? awesome. :D IIRC, you'll also switch to BST at midnight?
probably, but it's more fun to sort through photos and catch up on comments :D
HA! Will all four of you be going to Joe on Monday as well?
yep i did it last year :)don't see why i shouldn't do it this year too :) and yep to the BST.. i'm gonna get so confused and worried about setting my alarm :s
indeed
ehehehe sorting through pics is very fun :)
get some pics and say hi from us :)
ok :D
yay :D hehe
Well I'm in one piece
:)
I'm inbetween catching up shows and falling asleep.
Oh, RG, Mr Scoop says Glock will start from the back since he needs to get his gearbox changed.
Makes no difference at all if rumours are to be believed.
Not sure what you mean?
Small fuel tank.
If they get that far in the first place.
I've lost all optimism now :(
Don't lose hope, RG. If it's wet and/or there's safety cars, I think they'll make it to the end.
aww don't loose hope R.G... Amy may even be able to get a pic of him...
If anyone happens to be interested, practice for the IndyCar GP of St Petersberg starts on Indycar.com in 5 minutes (I think) with qually at 5.30 this evening
:)
Yeah, but, still, coulda ended up at Renault... Renault!
True... I was actually wondering as Petrov got eliminated from Q1, if it was Glock or Renault who ended negotiations. Was it Glock?
I'd imagine it was Timo. From what I heard he wanted to be involved in a new team. And I don't think he was too certain about the future of Renault at the time.
I don't think anyone was sure of Renault's future at the time - remember Kubica was also publicly questioning Renault's involvement too
ooh glock is one person i did not see today! I did on thursday though?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dscn1366-medium-jpg
Erm... you know we were talking about Amy and co meeting Ant and Crofty.. looks like we almost replicated an earlier convo in a different thread.
http://j.mp/bGVNMf
#sorrymr&mrsc
those on the ground threads are kind of confusing :( I was using them but it looks like no one else was?
Yaaay, Timo ♥
we were just discussing moving all the comments from those threads back into the daily :)
tis okay, we tried and we failed.
morning/afternoon/hello mr & mrs c :)
it was a good idea!
he was a crack up, every time someone went to pose for a photo with him he would do bunny ears behind their head with his fingers :D
absolutely. but we worked out to tidy up the comments into the right threads now would take make three whole days of admin for us :)
:D Go Timo
I think a nice place to start if you want to is there is some bad language in todays from the frontline thread :)
hey lou, i was rudely awaked by christine throwing a glass of orange squash over me.
(don't think she meant to do it)
oh really? okay, i look in a sec.
on a similar subject, we'll blog about this next week, but we were contemplating the idea of dropping the daily thread concept all together and just having a page where conversation just happens.
like twitter basically. a long stream of never-ending conversation that doesn't need to jump threads at midnight and no-one needs to worry about where they comment?
any thoughts?
we keep threaded conversation for live commenting and "on a specific topic" discussion. it's basically a simple change to the realtime page to remove the thread dropdown. everything remains the same.
if there is no drop down does that mean I'd need to use LCLT for other things?
Sounds like an episode of the Twilight Zone
:o
I like having the daily because it makes it easy for me to have cut-off points when I play 'lets read every single comment made on this site'
but I do appreciate the midnight thing combined with different time zones causes a lot of work for you guys.
actually no. we could keep realtime as is, but create:
sidepodcast.com/conversation
for all generic discussion maybe?
:)
hehehehehe :)
But would the generic conversation thread be accessible from doohickey too? Makes it easier to switch between topics on a hot news day. I'm fine with it as long as page loading on Ye Olde isn't an issue.
not funny!
You'll all be happy to know that Sato has thrown his car clean off the track - missed the wall by about a few inches
:o
hmm, might have to think about that. mixing threaded and non-threaded sound like a bigger nightmare than just selecting the correct thread.
if we want to link back to a comment.. or find a comment that was a few days ago.. how would we find it, the awesome search?
I bet christine laughed at your reaction :P
good point, google couldn't index pages that big. so that might be an issue.
i guess it would just be like a chat room, conversation happens and them moves on.
she might be feeling a bit bad about waking me up :)
but I don't like things moving on when I am sleeping so I'd never be able to sleep again :D
hehehehe. will give it some more thought. it may not be the answer, but we know we don't like what we currently have either.
fair enough. at the end of the day I always come back to its your site, do what you like, we shall adapt :D
awwww
indeed. we did discuss this before when the first major changes to doohickey were made. i somewhat remember you wanting to be able to archive old discussions, which is why you weren't so keen on a chatroom format before. but then i guess there are other practical considerations now?
seconded. :)
i'm the same... kinda i like to catch up with comments cause otherwise people can talk about something that i've noooo idea about. plus i may miss convos about cheese... ;)
however things change and we get used to them, we always adapt to spc whatever happens, and the same people will be here. no harm in trying out new things :)
it would be good not to have to hassle people anymore i think. which is what mostly appeals.
that's true, i still do. i think i'm almost conceding defeat and saying "human nature tends to do this". forcing order on people, ourselves included, doesn't work so well.
you guys do so much for us, if it makes your lives easier go for it!
maybe we can adapt a page on the wiki for some discussions (like anything to do with meetups) or if we want to share a link with a particular person?
it's not really hard at the moment. more that it feels like we're fighting a losing battle. conversation wants/needs to be free, not put into arbitrary boxes.
we'll have a think, and then blog and see what people suggest.
sounds fair enough :)
Mr C when you have some spare time on your hands and want to try something new for you netbook, Lubuntu works pretty well with skype. It's not a official Ubuntu version (yet), and it still looks a bit unfinished but all important bits are there. It also has a netbook version (you can choose it after installing in the dropdown at the login window) and it is tiny. Just 1.9 GB on my netbook at the moment.
download
ooh, ok. look v.interesting.
our skype is basically broken at the moment, so anything is better than what we have :)
Guys and Girls of Sidepodland.
Proof of Red Bulls new ride height adjuster has come out;
http://twitpic.com/1ba35w
Quite conclusive
Indeed. HAHA! :D
Sorry to be stupid, but what have we conclusively proved? Is that very close to the ground?
oh bless you :)
Ehhhhh...
i shall find a picture
it's a photoshop thingy. unless someone sat on webbers head.
What happened? :(
Alison!! i meant to tell you yesterday... we have two huge wild ducks that have now taken to living in our garden. i saw them and thought of you.
compare http://www.formula1.com/wi/597x478/sutton/2010/d10aus760.jpg
with http://twitpic.com/1ba35w
:D :D
Nick was house hunting today. His friend went with him and kept trying to talk him into getting a duck friendly house :P
:D hehe
is he trying to immitate friends?
I spoke to the guy on the phone. The first thing he said was that you could completely keep ducks in one of the houses :P
You what? Maybe I have my stupid hat on today
Chick and Duck?
Huh?
Do you watch Friends?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friends
holy smokes,
guess who is making their debut in IndyLights this year?
Sato?
Nope - Lights is the GP2 of Indycar. I'll give you a clue - until very recently his dad was F1 connected
heya
oh yeah didnt see the lights bit, Sato is in proper indycar. I have no idea!
who?
Piquet jr?
afternoon! how are you today?
a certain Adrian Campos Jr...
that would amuse me greatly
I'm very fine Jon and you?
bit worse for wear to be honest! been quite ill for the past few days but getting there slowly! having a nice day watching track cycling!
hey Jackie
Ooh that's not great, hope you feel on better form soon.
Hey RG.. have you seen Mav's tweet?
thank you :) i did too much over the last 2 weeks, so its all catching up to me!
No, I don't think so.
http://twitter.com/VivaF1/statuses/11137109631
the name rings a bell but looking at his record clearly thats only because of his dad
awwww yaaaaaaaaay
awwwww!!!
Aww, awesome!
Isn't it lovely .. put me in a really happy mood
thats awesome :)
Hooray! Congratulations!
He probably won't be around much for the next wee while .. blimey me in charge of site *runs*
Go Jackie! :D
it's definitely nothing to do with his results which are (to be honest) a lot less than average
No pressure ;)
got a couple of wins but in nothing mainstream
well except the blogging ... so if anyone wants to volunteer
Justin Wilson's brother is coming along in Lights, but he's no Justin - that's obvious too
I could always russle up a guest post if you ever need one
Any time you fancy you'd be more than welcome
Ah yes, i first saw him in Formula Palmer Audi, not heard from him since though
Yeah, he's in his second Light's season - no idea where he'll go from there though
His first wasnt a full season though, so this will be his first proper season, i wouldnt be surprised if he's living off his brothers name
True, but he didn't miss that many races last year. I can't imagine him bringing that much money to his team unless he's managed to copy his brother's fund raising scheme
Where's Stuart's bit on the Santander site, anyone know?
Morning all ;)
morning rubbergoat
Hey mate.
Hi Gavin
Afternoon, Gavin. :D
So Pitlane magazine didn't publish my articles - something to do with the HTML formatting or something? Bu**er!
I struggle to understand the electorate at the best of times but I can't figure out why Cameron is not well clear in the polls just now. We have a huge recession and a bit of scandal going round and a party that has been in government for 30 years. How is he not winning by a mile? {Comment #74}
Because of those of us (particularly in the Labour heartlands) who think our choice is between the Conservatives who know they're Conservatives and the Conservatives who think they're Labour. We still remember the mess the Conservatives left the country in last time they were in power, so we don't want a Conservative-style government, but that's all the choice we're being offered, so we might as well pick at random or not vote at all. A palatable government isn't being offered as a choice (there are smaller parties who may or may not do better but have no chance of gaining seats because of big-party inertia combined with a total lack of promotion by any party, at least in this area).
I'll probably end up voting Labour because I live in a constituency with one of the few MPs in the country who seems to be capable of representing a constituency properly without falling into the traps of power-chasing or placing party above constituency. If that particular MP decides not to stand, I might as well roll a dice in the election booth to determine who to vote for because all the candidates are likely to be equally damaging.
Hello everyone. I watched qualfiying in bed this morning (hooray for new netbook plus iplayer), and in the breaks I tried to keep up with comments. I have no idea what anybody said about anything as I turned it off to go back to sleep, and went out when I got up.. Anything notable going on?
oops, by anybody I mean the drivers and team bosses
Oh, and the Conservatives had almost as large a proportion of its MPs affected by the expenses scandal as Labour. I think this election will see record abstentions and spoiled papers.
Indeed, Alia's right. Many have said that if Cameron wins, even he knows it's not a vote for the Tories, it's just a vote against Labour. And not everyone will vote Tory just because they want to diss Labour. This partly explains why the BNP, for example, is getting a lot of attention when it shouldn't: because too many people have become disillusioned by mainstream (Labour, Tory, LDP) pols.
Ask for them back and post on your own site
Belated happy birthday Pat
Anyone who wants to become a politician shouldn't be allowed :) {Comment #81}
How's this for a solution? Make the parliamentary elections a lottery. Every British citizen above a minimum age (16 or 18 would be fine) would be entered and every year, 600 people would be randomly selected to be Parliament. If you "won the lottery" you would have to serve as an MP for the full term unless you had a good excuse (e.g. serving a prison sentence or have a severe health issue that would make it impossible to fulfil the duty). Cabinets could be decided by ballot of the new parliament. This would encourage a healthier balance of thought patterns and reduce the power of specific ideaologies to divert politicians from finding ways to improve the country.
It would also increase interests in politics because it would make sense to pay attention to something you might have to do during your lifetime.
Thanks :)
Off out for a meal with Dad & clan later as I was away for the 'event' itself and did something with Mum the weekend before (it being Mothers Day). I should have a shower and iron a shirt I suppose
OOh don't like that idea .. chavs in power!
It's ok - they were summaries of published articles anyway.
Have a brilliant time
Awesome. Have a good one!
Bit rude of them not to get back to you asking for a different format
That sounds like a big load of *****
They realise they won't win
I wonder if a hung parliament is a likelihood {Comment #105}
I reckon that's very likely, hence why the BBC has postponed The Apprentice until 2011 (its star, Sir Alan Sugar, is a government business "tsar", there are broadcasting restrictions once an election date is announced and a hung parliament is likely to lead to another election before the year is out).
I don't know if I can cope with two elections.
what???
OOh don't like that idea .. chavs in power! {Comment #451}
Well... ...anyone and everyone in power, seeing as they're chosen at random.
that's awesome
tis isn't it .. I've been smiling all day
Cool - just seen it :D
It's to do with some tags in it or something [/img] and apparently - I kept these in so that I would not have to send him images - just a document and then he could keep the links in on the published article...
two seconds to swap those out. someone's playing silly buggers.
the site's a waste of internet space anyhow.
oh glad its not just me who was unimpressed.
Thanks - thought so. One of the articles was this one: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/2010-02-points-fairness-docx
it has graphs and everything :(
didnt they also publish and later pull an article by the guy who called me that name on twitter
it's annoying that a lot of people were excited about it, and prepared to put effort into it, yet the organisers seem utterly clueless.
I think it might be this one that's causing the trouble: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/2010-03-bah10-qual-analysis-docx
didn't know that.
That guy is apparently a contributor...
I thought it was going to be like a flashy e-mag. Was quite disapointed when it wasn't. Seemed short on content as well.
christine would have that fixed in less than 20 seconds. madness.
lol i heard it was pulled for being a copy of someone else' work from elsewhere
IndyCar quals at St Pete start in 5 mins.
what are the cha... oh
See that's what I thought. I copied the HTML I made for a forum post on F1-Technical and sent it to him. I don't see how a quick CTRL-H Find and replace wouldn't have fixed it if the HTML tags were off?
Gavin other places love your work .. you don't need that hassle
cool.
*opens racecontrol*
Thanks Jackie ;)
seconded. sames goes to anyone else. life's too short.
It seems to be having its usual 'issues'. I'll give it a few mins to settle down
fine here, cept no audio?
I should really make an effort to get into other motorsports .. wonder what it was that got me hooked on f1 anyway
I have decided post quali is boring without finding out Quali weights etc. booo.
Indeed. Really struggling to write my post right now!
IRL qualifying is also on Channelsurfing.com should the Indycar feed go down
No audio, and video is anything but smooth. Cars are jumping 40 feet at a time
video is lovely here. it's a bandwidth hog though.
750kps!
Also niggling problems - hopefully they'll fix they're audio soon. Happened for the Brazil weekend too
:/
Which browser? I'm in FF with Flash10.
safari flash 10.
I still did my virtual grid but I do miss the analysis of the weights
it pixelates sometimes. but 100% better than bbc f1 stream.
personally speaking, i quite like that after qually, we can just sleep or go do something else.
WHAAAA! SOUND!
audio is back
Refresh the page, let it reload, I've got audio now
It was one of the few things that I actually did enjoy blogging about.. I like having some graphs to do
For the fans it's probably quite good - for the stats geeks it's like expecting a roast ham and getting a slice of spam instead :(
I agree. Hanging around for hours was annoying. It does feel a little flat but that's fine. Part of that is because it was so long ago, normally it would have finished 3.5hrs ago?
all you need is a new source of data. then make graphs about that, right?
that's true, given a few more races I'll be quite happily producing heaps of them
pages of the stuff here: http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Pages/timing.aspx
must be loads of stuff to make from that?
ah thats also true but quali was a free for all.. I feel I'd be stepping on Gavin's toes if I used that
That's where I get most of my data from. Maybe Jackie could look at how the average laptime comes down over the course of a session to show why it's best to leave it until the last minute to make a run?
fair point.
I really don't mind - I'm only looking at session times and number of laps run...
all credit to mediatemple, they upgraded their infrastructure like they said they would and didn't take sidepodcast down.
#firsttimeforeveverything
There's still time...
wow - Franchitti and Briscoe out of Q1!
interesting thought, thanks. By the time I update all the site stats I'll probably be too tired to do it though
Have they copied the F1 system?
hehe. they're done for the weekend. more updates during malaysia qually!
Kind of... it's a little more complicated though. They're split into two groups with a ranking system - top 6 of each group goes through to final qually
That's a very vague description of qually by the way
Sort of... the field is split into two. The fastest (??) from each group goes through to the next round.
It's definitely up there with Legard in terms of Vagueness ;)
I do my best
:)
Must admit, that KV Lotus with Sato looks nice
Qualifying Analysis from my blog:
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/27/melbourne-qualifying-analysis/
That was hard to write, just because I couldn't find that much to write about...
ace
Aaaahh - now I remember.
IRL Qually - All drivers are split into two groups which contest the first round of qually seperately. Six drivers from each group go to round two and the six fastest from that go to the last group of qualifiers
Like the last graph, thats a cool idea
Do you? That's great to know, as I was unsure how useful that graph was... Thanks ;)
Tidying my desk is so boring that i've decided to put FP1 on in the background :)
Well as you are watching the whole session you don't notice oh so and so did 4 laps and someone else 8 but since they have to start from the tyres they qualified with those extra 4 laps will make a world of difference to grip off the start line .. thats why I like it.
Any word on the Uni front Lou?
Oh excellent. I will make a mental note to look into Q3 Laps next time too ;)
I went for another interview yesterday and got offered a place for a photography foundation degree. It's not the nicest uni, and it's right on my doorstep.. but it will do if my last uni rejects me... and i can't get anything else via extra or clearing.
That's good news but fingers crossed for your other choices
yep :)i've got a few months till my next interview which is nice. fingers crossed for Farnham :)
I'm 3 tweets short of 1000 now .. will have to make sure I have something decent to say for that one
Sweet Jeebus... Narain Karthikeyan making his first start in the Nascar truck series at the half-mile oval at Martinsville, Virginia right now...
Holy **** - he may be in for a surprise
:o
blimey!
The tv is utter tripe, not much wonder its hardly ever on
you could bun it like we did :)
loads living room space.
Narain almost got into Max Papis... This is a scene, man.
It honestly wouldn't bother me but I think my soap addicted daughter would go mad
ahh, boo. kids are so old fashioned ;)
evening all
just to say, you'll have to turn it down before you can go into extra or clearing.
ah okay. well lets hope for farnham then :)
Well done! :D
Oh...
Half well done :D
:D
:D
IRL Qually is done - Power on pole and Wilson starting 4th. High chance of rain for tomorrow's race too. Should be fun
Where is Sato's
Lotus CosworthDallara Honda? How did Hunter-Reay or whatever get on?
I may be at Mum's when that's on.. we'll see. Time to get sorted to go out, I'll see you all tomorrow at some stage, either for the F1 race or later (depends if I'm on the main PC or not).
Wait... Vettel went faster than the lap record set in 2004?
http://www.manipef1.com/blog/articles/19/
That's a big fail for the OWG who were supposed to be REDUCING Downforce!
Sato is starting 11th; not sure where Hunter-Reay is 7th - the times still aren't up. As far as I can tell, race coverage starts at either 7.30pm or 8.30
Who loves active suspension, slick tyres and low fuel quali? :P
that should say Hunter-Reay is 7th
:)
Not bad for sato, im going to hunt for a pic
Should be renamed the OMG they can't fix it group
I take it that is a good result. Yay.
Not to dissimilar to his f1 cousins http://www.indycar.com/multimedia/photos/2478-honda-grand-prix-of-st-petersburg-friday-practice/
Hmmmm... Brand Danica will not be happy to be down in 21st
:o
Was the lap record broken because the car was on fumes though .. previously it was fuelled for partial distance. We could look up last years times and deduct the fuel weights to see if it is really faster
The lap record was set in 2004 wasn't it?
Ah yes, I believe you are right but they still qualified with some race fuel?
Ooh I can't remember - I wasn't paying much attention in 2004!
I wasn't either but I thought that the fact that they would do qualify on fumes this year was hailed as being great because it was ditched yonks ago.. then again my mempry is pants
I wander what they were talking about...
http://jamd.com/image/98080051
http://jamd.com/image/98080036
this i should imagine...http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82459
I think Alonso blocked Schuey and messed his best lap
And so it begins...
De la Rosa blocked someone in FP3 and got a reprimand
ahhh.. thanks :)
oh man, hes going to carry photos around with him isnt he
i so hope he does :)
There is nothing in the FIA media centre about it
Poor Tom Kristensen :(
Think there might be some naughty words in this, but here's a video someone took of the cops pulling over Hamilton: http://sweetf1.blogspot.com/2010/03/f1-word-of-week-hooning_27.html
The incident itself isn't in the vid. Sorry if it's already been posted!
I love the random Macca fan wandering around trying to block the shots
Evening all BTW!
hey adie.
Good evening. How are you? I've been intermittently visiting over the last couple of weeks. Work has, as they say - been mental.
v.good ta. just catching up with the paddock running championship:
http://www.runthattrack.info/overall.shtml
That's brilliantly random.
we're supporting croftie, but he hasn't submitted any times for australia.
and claire williams.
i just noticed that some very awesome people are taking part! There is Crofty.. obviously... but then you have Claire Williams, Mark Thompson and Russell Batchelor (f1 photographers) and... Andy Shovlin, Pete Bonnington!!!! yay!
Bono is doing pretty well! :) yay for awesome f1 people :)
who are you backing though?
Shov and Bono... I shall call them team Brawn... hehe i'm going to blame Jenson who got them to do the triathlon training :)
bpl took part in bahrain. here's hoping stuart takes part later in the year.
I have to say that Bono, Crofty or CVW are my tips to win.
Great idea though
That Matt Kingston-Lee fella seems very quick.
oohh there's graphs too!
a link would help: http://www.runthattrack.info/previous.shtml
Yahoo! Singapore appears to have lost something in translation. One of its news stories has a headline of "F1 Star Lands In Hot Soup". Anyone hoping for a news item relating to a PR stunt gone wrong will be disappointed to know the story on the other end of the link is re-telling #492 of Hamilton's over-exuberant end to Friday...
i have nothing to do. for the second race weekend in a row, i've nothing pressing to do on a saturday evening. christine's working on digest and then we're going to watch a film.
i amazed at how much we've managed to reduce our workload this year, it's like we're normal people. 19 races doesn't even seem that bad.
i vote we do a whole one hour debrief show on sunday and don't mention it once.
that would please me more than you could possibly know :)
Excellent!
I'm using the time to get as much done for the F1Weekender as possible. Can't have another still-born issue!
Pleased to hear you've found a sense of normality thought. I'll see what you say come Abu Dhabi though....:)
I wasn't intending to. Maybe only in GWBW. It was interesting for about three seconds!
oooo!! yay, specially as it's an early GP that's awesome, restful weekends are the best way to cope with early mornings :) what film are you going to watch? anything interesting?
yay! :)
Here is a link to a drop.io screenshot of the "hot soup" caption.
hold us to it. we haven't done a back-to-back yet, but we have fri/mon off next weekend, so that shouldn't be an issue either.
yes!!! that is an amazing idea.
Hey, I didn't say nothink.
i just cant believe how ott the whole coverage has been
no idea. it has to be in the itunes uk store for renting. that's the only limitation.
:)
Or something more resembling English.
we're watching UP! on actual dvd at the moment, its quite good if a little wierd.
#AlisonGotToMe
watched the trailer, didn't grab us. let us know what ya think.
#confidentialfromali
I am up waaaaay too early considering the race doesn't start for 9 hours.
hi Amy! :)
hi!
i'm really excited for you :)
*Approves*
Please Please Please Please Please!
*As in don't mention it!
Considering that the guys ran in desert heat for 6km on tarmac, even Crofty's time is impressive!
right, leaving the house. Might be a little late!
have fun!
So...
Good plot, the rents seemed to enjoy it, I'm in an utterly appauling mood for some reason but it looks good!
NEWS FLASH!!! Though I may be a little late. I was checking to see where Scott Speed was lined up for the race tommorrow and saw that Narain Karthekayen raced in a NASCAR truck race. Started 11th finished 13th.
Okay, well, I thought it was intersting
Evening all
Hi Steven
hi steven
sorry.. i'm not a nascar fan.. so i didn't really understand it :)
There is a lot on this weekend. IRL as well
Giggles on BBC1.
Hold that. It's Michael McIntyre
Let's not forget he had a stunning 4th place finish at the USGP
:D
i barely understand the f1 part of the weekend... I nearly went to lydennhill race track today for their performance ford event. This weekend really is packed with motorsport.
i don't remember that.. i barely remember the US GP circuit..... oooppss.
go to lydenhill for rallycross
its genius.
Yes an orgiastic feast of motorsports. The IRL race should be very good, NASCAR I'll check in on from time to time to see how Scott Speed is doing
i'm planning to :) the dates are in my diary and i'm basically free for the events. plus they're cheap and it's really close = perfect for practice :)
It was the year of the Michelin problem. Only 2 Ferraris, 2 Jordans and 2 s Minardis raced
woot
if i go to events this year and require a snapper i'll shout your way, standing on the other side of the fence is unbelievable
Never seen it live but it is awesome on TV. Would be great for photography.
and you get to wear a cool tabard ;)
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs045.snc3/13294_374125047554_667872554_3812785_1374986_n.jpg
It's not an old clip of Clive James then?
thank you :) Once i've attended a few events i'm planning to send my images to the local paper and lydennhill themselves just asking if they want to use them, and offering my services to help give them regular images. I know loads of people will have offered this before, but it seems like the next step, if i'm persistent i may get somewhere.
Poor Schumacher is upset at being blocked. He would never do that. Of course you could read it as being him asking how much he can block others.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82459
Nope
I went to Britcar couple of weeks ago at brands, alot of people go and take pictures and then sell them to the drivers
That's the attitude. Offer the drivers some pics as well. Even if it means giving them a few freebies
yep, i've seen it once or twice and it looks great!! i never knew lydennhill was literally 20mins away from us. From the initial research i've done there only seems to be a few rallycross photographers.. much more of an opportunity than some of the other motorsports. Seems like a good place to start.
Cos that's who Giggles reminds me of ;)
that is cool... ;) i want one of these though ;)
You should also look for karting tracks near you
hehehehe
Lens envy
sounds interesting..i'll have to try that too :) I know Sutton was first commitioned to take pics of brazilian drivers for a brazilian paper and was spotted by Senna, who offered him the chance to advance through the formulas with him. I'm not saying that's what will happen to me, but it goes to show anything can happen if you stick with it. (just like Amy waiting for hours and hours for Heikki)
Buckmore Park! They hold all sorts of events!!
Get some business cards with a website/flickr account on them and a mini explanation of whats there so they can go and look at them and then hand them out at the events
Night you lot - don't forget to change your clocks and see you at 6am UK time ;)
I had total lens envy on Wednesday, my friend was using a 3-4" lens on his SLR and i was using my mini-hd camcorder
then the people from hayfisher walk past with their hd broadcast cameras and some guys with MASSIVE lenss for their slr. grr
yep, that's some of the advice Emily Davenport gave me too. Buckmore Park is pretty close by, however i'm gonna have to focus on that in the summer, it's a little bit further away and therefore will probably need to wait till after exams.
shh
night
If you go to the junior events you can get to know the drivers because they get ignored. 3 years later they can be in F1 and have no peace at all
and camera envy.. they guy has TWO dslrs... hehe
Good night
totally true, one of the main reasons i prefer to cover junior stuff is because the guys actually want to talk to you
and tabard envy
oh goodness... i'm putting one alarm clock on 5am and one at 6am.. just in case the alarms change (with the clocks).. i don't want to miss the race!
I need to not miss the whole race again. Night mate.
i am planning to miss it, therefore i dont mind if i sleep past!
:) Emma said she'd ask some of her british drivers if they'd let me work with them, or shadow them for a race or two but that will have to wait till when she comes back i think :) (am in no rush... i want to pass my exams! ;) )
That is very good of her and helps her drivers out.
Is Rhod Guilbert still using this joke?
I see the logic.
I think this must be a repeat. That's the problem with comedy on TV it chews up material very quickly
definitely
which one?
the suitcase handle one
beeb website says it is which explains it
lou whats Emmas surname?
Interesting spin on Renault's new sponsor. They are sponsoring themselves
http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=Gravel_Trap&id=48032
ooh.. it's an old episode of Mr McIntyre's roadshow though right?.. so technically it's just a repeat?
yeah
she's amazing :) nothing was promised but it would be great for it to happen :) fingers crossed.
Stonier
ahh so it is her. she emailed me about meeting some of her gp2 and f2 guys
loved hearing earlier that mike gascoyne ignores the first letter of each person who writes asking for a job to see if they are dedicated!
awesome! :) she's really helpful.
very much so
He has said that before in inteviews. It's one of the reasons I tell Lou to keep e-mailing people
yeah me to. i made a mental note about that. it's kinda reassured me about pushing for things in f1..
definitely. keep nagging! (in a good way ;) )
you gotta work from the bottom up but you've got to make the most of people like her and use hte opportunities she gives you
i've always been a bit shy about that kinda thing.. just cause i'm scared of making the wrong impression. Hearing gascoyne basically saying it's only really a good thing kinda confirmed to me that as long as it's done politely it's actually a good thing :)
I totally was like that too, but you force yourself to do it and realise the worst they can say is no, you get over it pretty quick :)
There is a story possibly appocryphal that if you go to a rabbi and tell him you want to convert to Judaism he will slam the door in your face the first twice then on the third occasion welcome you in.
yep, from what i can see there are several ways into f1.. theirs the Sutton way, of following a driver up (which only happens if you're really lucky..), the Davenport way of working with a specific circuit for a number of years before getting a chance into f1 (it was 5 years for her which seems like no time at all! = lucky), or theirs working for a newspaper or agency.
i think slowly being in contact with photographers and doing research has helped me gain confidence and things. Strangely the rejections from unis has helped me too. not everyone is going to be positive about my work, not everyone is going to help, i just need to stick at it, and grab every opportunity that i come across.
You gotta be pushy - but in a nice way. It's something that comes with practice - believe me! Good luck making it happen thought, if you want it badly enough (which you do) something will present itself.
That's a great attitude :)
You can absolutely bet that some people won't like your work and will make their views very clear. Especially on the internet. The normal hum response is to over-estimate the negatives and under-estimate the positives.
Good little interview from Mr Heath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn3H2y0wH5M
hehehe i saw that a few months ago :) along with the singapore conference he did, and another interview for singapore, oh and a few from mr sutton too... i got a bit obsessed with looking up f1 photographer interviews :D
hahaa
AMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heikki is locked out
http://tweetphoto.com/16012646
I think Chandhok may get more Chritine's rankings points
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/11085722056
you know that was 12 hours ago?
oh maybe he's still there.
AMMMMMMMMMMMY!!!!!!!!!
Why don't we just not bother for the rest of the year and give the 2010 ranking champ to Chandhok
hehehehe :) (hearts) Jake
Ok you confused lot. Put the clocks forwards, THEN set it for 6am and you'll be just fine
http://twitter.com/jakehumphreyf1/status/11164683400
At the rate he is going it may be the earliest any championship has ever been locked up. Although I think Heikki should have had points for inviting the fans to go running with him
Did we mention seeing some of those silly runing people as we were sneaking along the track last night?
noo... do go on...
The BTCC Ford Focus is powered by Calor Gas.
Love it
not much more to say, although security don't seem to mind much if you wait around late enough :-) I should have worn my running shorts
How? Can you use propane or butane in a conventional engine?
:)
No idea, but they're using the gas route instead of Petrol and Diesel for their engine and I LOVE this picture
http://www.photoshelter.com/c/iainweir/gallery-img-show/2010-03-23-BTCC-Media-Day-Team-Aon/G00003TnIDLDha_s/?&_bqG=31&_bqH=eJzzK8lwL40MqojM8q00M8j0dzUsqzL1NPWvCI.0sjS0MjQwsLJyj_d0sXU3AALjkDxPFx.XjMT4YrUAkKiau2e8u6OPj2tQJDZFAEvRG.k-&I_ID=I0000meKAcIO6as0
Apparently Calor do LPG so it is almost certainly that and not Calor gas as we know it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calor_gas
lots of people us LPG here in oz with regular engines. Not much of a change is needed
yeah, the car is LPG so that makes sense
LPG is used here although not in large numbers. Calor gas is normally propane or butane used in domestic heaters and I can't imagine you can use that in a piston engine. Not sure why I think that as it is just a hydrocarbon like octane but shorter and lighter
It is LPG
http://www.tomonslowcole.com/index.htm
Rather them than me!
I LOVE Heikki
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeoAJ_WuNvg&feature=player_embedded
The one in the middle, looks dangerous
Looks like you could use propane or butane in a piston engine. Seems odd but with a few minor changes it will work
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/27/f1-digest-2010-australia-qualifying/
ahahahahahaha XD that.is.awesome. more drivers should do that. I love his commentary :D
:D
i should show that to em.... *tweets her*
PING: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/27/27-mar-10-vettel-takes-pole-position-in-australia-qualifying/
The Renault site in the daily post is doing weird things with my cpu. It cycles constantly between 11% and 100%. Closed it and opened it a couple of times and it is definitely it that it doing it.
http://my.renaultf1.com/profiles/blogs/fan-blog-two-happy-renault
Ok, that was really worth booting my laptop up for, you were right :) Heikki is awesome.
*waves*
You are going to wear out the pinger at this rate
Thank you for the f1 minute christine :) I hope you enjoyed the film :)
To lou;
http://www.mattsayle.co.uk/index.php
We (me and Gord, not that you know who Gord is) saw this guy on Wednesday (and got lens envy!!) he's younger than us, but something like his site would be great for you to think about, just a good solid collection of photos of all types of evente
We haven't quite got to that.
What film was it?
hhehehe ;) i was thinking you were gonna watch it on your ipod seeing as it would have been easier for you :P hehe but it's awesome :)
:D
ooooh. :) enjoy the film when/if you watch it ;)
...that is a very good idea! #slowlukeh
wow, I think i'm going to have to get a website sooner or later, however firstly I'm going to work on increasing my motorsport portfolio. Then once i've got a good sample i'll erm.. tackle the challenge of working out how i actually get a website :)
:P did Heikki cheer you up a bit though?
Heikki's too lovable not to be cheered up from. :)
If only there was anyone round here who knew how to build a website.
PING: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/27/out-of-position/
Now who do we know that does web sites........?
brilliant :)
it is a real shame that no-one round here knows any sort of basic website design or coding.
oh well
hahaha :) you make a good point. let me get myself a bit more of a portfolio then i'll start bugging people :P (in a nice way...)
And who do we know that likes to buy domains?
im sure there are those diy sites, someone must know of a good one
Geocities ftw!
#1996
the thought of creating a website myself scares me.. alot. anyways it's time for sleep, otherwise i'll not have a chance of getting up in time. night allxx
tis easy. it's just text and tags.
night lou.
Goodnight :)
night lou.
really??? it looks mega confusing.. anyways xx
complicated stuff is, but html is a doddle
Good night
That's easy for you to say. You know what you are talking about
true. but it really is. you type text and mark that up with tags.
if you can make sidepodcast comments bold, you can write html. you just may not realise it.
Always assumed it was a bit more complex than that
I still think it's a scandal Geocities got closed down, with it's awesome WordArt and blinding gif files. Retro chic is so in right now.
Just realised we need a new game. Fantasy Christine's rankings. People should pick a few drivers on some basis or other based on how many ranking points they think they will get.
its totally not
true story. it just seems daunting.
agreed. scandalous.
and for the price of a few hard drives.
Right you lovely people, going to bed. I have a good chance of not waking up in time, so, enjoy the race. If I do wake up in time, see ya then. Lotsa love.
My host insist that everyone change their passwords to stronger passwords.
The current password has letters, numbers and capital letters in, now they insist that i put a symbol into it!!!!
night chap.
Good night
Night RG
That's a bit over the top
Night RG
totally.
so i know im going to forget it!
type it into the comments, every time you forget you can ask us ;)
#donotdothis
ok then....
*************oh wow its come up in stars ;)
Well thats just impressive, good coding mr c
hehe!
i'm missing something here:
@tonyfernandes: In melbourne. Grey skies. Waiting to do some interviews in branson Room. Should have brought a measuring tape
love how the del bit goes through the centre and completely misses hte **
To get measured for his air hostess uniform?
Hello again. Meal was excellent, new-ish mediterranean place in town with very nice morroccan lamb and bottle of red wine. although oddly it closed early, we got there at 8 and left at 10 after 3 courses plus coffee, very un-mediterranean, I'm surprised i don;t have indegestion we ate so fast (''cos it was very nice),
Strangely feel uncharacterstically tired for this hour so commenting in bed from netbook, unable to see keyboard properly hence typos...
ah, could be. i figured he was saying the branson suite was a bit small or something. clearly it's gone right over me head.
Where did all these people come from? This crowd will be big
Evening folks
hey buddy.
the perfect antidote to the deserted desert.
So it's warm but windy and cloudy today. Should not have probs with tyre temps. Wonder if it will rain by 5pm
we're so freaked out you're getting to the track now. we have yet to fit in a sleep!
I was just thinking that..
hmmm maybe sleep now is the go? 6 hours to kick off!
Hi Pat and Bassano
hi
None of them have connections like you lot
That's why I'm in bed early, but I'm not sure I want to sleep yet. My bodyclock is a bit messed up right now so maybe it is for the best.
so glad I was here the first 3 days
@elphino: Webber's ride in the driver parade http://twitpic.com/1bdziu
Gorgeous
Mr webber signed a red bull hat for me last night :-)
you met webber too?
oh didn't we say? :D Schumi sort of blew him away. Webber said he was frustrated with Twitter when we bugged him
Its midnight and the clocks go forward. Does SPC blow up at this point?
not til 2am
no. because the clocks go forward at 1am.
ahh, all is well
he was... what??
i haven't had chance to catch up with comments!
It sounds like Melbourne is the most driver-accessible GP :)
only if you have crazy Amy telling you where to be. Most drivers were great last night
perhaps, but you wouldn't be able to just bump into F1 people at Silverstone or any other middle-of-nowhere race.
no. at silverstone, you can see them leave the paddock, but they're behind a fence. they get into cars and vanish.
At least one person will be late for early shift tomorrow, always happens
(They never get it wrong and come in early in the autumn)
