It's Friday today, Free Practice day in Australia and also Alia's birthday! Happy Birthday! There will be plenty of threads appearing today, from live commenting, to results, to a dedicated post for our intrepid GP explorers. Stay tuned for all things Australia on Sidepodcast. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • It looks as though the FIA are going ahead with the parc ferme system they trialled in Bahrain - with the cars allowed to stay in the team garages but cameras installed to make sure nothing untoward happens. It's all very Big Brother and is just a by-product of the fact that the FIA hadn't anticipated the amount of space the extra teams would take up.
  • Bernie Ecclestone has apparently remembered that the US exists and is pushing for a Grand Prix in New York for 2012. Of course, it would be a street circuit in the midst of the city, as Bernie likes no other kinds of race. That wouldn't cause any disturbance whatsoever, would it?
  • Sauber have managed to introduce their own version of the McLaren F-Duct, although they haven't decided if they want to run it in the race or not. Mr C was quite happy to be proved right that it took McLaren a couple of years to design the thing, but he was proved wrong because the other teams are able to introduce it rather quickly!
  • I absolutely must plug yesterday's F1 Big Picture just because it is the best one we ever posted.

That should do it for now, I hope you'll join us throughout the day, we'll be around and thus, I will see you in the comments.

"That is the downside to drinking Guinness outside of Europe"

You're telling me. I paid less for it in Euros than I do in Dollars. Guinness was my safe drink of choice at pubs while I was stationed in Germany. I didn't care for much of their beer, made me too gassy =/

  • Alison26/03/2010 at 00:40

I'm just so angry. I booked my tickets online and when they arrived they were wrong. I spent ages on the phone to rude people who told me I had to pay a ridiculous fee to correct their error.... Eventually I complained enough and they dropped it. I don't understand why I can't change plans without extortionate fees but they can do whatever they like.... Can I charge a fee?

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 00:41

In Italy's case, who said we can't have both? It's been done before, and it's a distinct possibility.

As for the US, there may be a more practical reason. Other than Indy, is there any purpose-built track that meets the standards required to host F1?

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 00:53

That'd be three events in Italy (sorta). San Marino, Monza and Rome.

I don't think so. There is the grain of hope ofr Barber Motorsport Park, where US-F1 was supposed to be allowed to try to push-start their car.

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 00:54

Road Atlanta is nice. Infineon too. Laguna Seca.

    Oh, fair enough.

Camelot don't own the lottery they only have a license for a set time.

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 00:57

Road Atlanta is nice. Infineon too. Laguna Seca.

I don't think Infineon and Laguna Seca can happen because the gradient change in some of the corners may be too much (think Corkscrew).

    Road Atlanta, though... Hmmm...

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 00:57

Camelot don't own the lottery they only have a license for a set time.

I get that, for another 10 years or so

    It's still wrong

  • Bert26/03/2010 at 00:57

Road Atlanta is nice. Infineon too. Laguna Seca.

There are TONS of nice tracks in the U.S. None of which are up to F1 technical specs, or equipped to deal with an F1 even. Laguna, Watkins, Road Atlanta, VIR are all out in the boonies, with half a horse trail serving them.

  • Alison26/03/2010 at 00:57

I never understood why the government didn't run the lottery and use it as a source of income.

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 00:57

Lime Rock is awesome but it'd be a savagely boring F1 track.

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 00:58

Because they're generally idiots who couldn't run the proverbial booze up

Ain't gonna happen. We have heard this bull before. Someone's contract must be due so he is trying to bump the fee

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 01:00

Ain't gonna happen. We have heard this bull before. Someone's contract must be due so he is trying to bump the fee

It'll happen. Maybe not right now, but it'll happen. There's just too much demand from the teams not to make this happen one way or the other.

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 01:00

I think Thunderhill would be an awesome F1 course. Too bad they have nothing as far as facilities goes to support a race.

  • Alison26/03/2010 at 01:00

Because they're generally idiots who couldn't run the proverbial booze up

That might well be my dad's favourite phrase. It always makes me smile.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 01:01

I get that, for another 10 years or so

    It's still wrong

What is wrong is that they have the license. Blair bottled out of giving it to Virgin when they put in a far better bid and allowed Camelot to bid again knowing the Virgine bid.

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 01:01

It'll happen. Maybe not right now, but it'll happen. There's just too much demand from the teams not to make this happen one way or the other.

We don't need another street circuit

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 01:02

It'll happen. Maybe not right now, but it'll happen. There's just too much demand from the teams not to make this happen one way or the other.

There is no demand in New York. Never has been. Five years ago we almost had finalised contracts for a race in Central Park according to Bernie then it disappeared as fast as all the Russian GPs

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 01:02

We don't need another street circuit

But it'll probably be cheaper than a proper circuit. Which means the organizer might have more money to pay Bernie with.

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 01:02

We don't need another street circuit

Yea, pretty much. They always sound like a good idea in theory but turn out to be brutally boring.

A USGP won't be in New York. But I'd be looking further north - in the region of New England. I'm no expert in undeveloped land, but in terms of demographics, I'd be targeting Boston.

  • Jim Newman26/03/2010 at 01:04

Street circuits are always asking for trouble too. No runoff/peanuts to catch the cars, poor tarmac, bad facilities, poor layout, etc.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 01:04

Why does everything on my computer want to upgrade right now. Don't they know FP1 is coming up?

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 01:05

    #marchmadness

For F1 to work it needs to be close to NY or in California.

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 01:07

For F1 to work it needs to be close to NY or in California.

Those are the obvious solutions. Unfortunately, there's obvious reasons they won't work as well. Which is why I'm going for a less obvious solution. Boston is a big city, East Coast TV-friendly, and may just have enough European influenced culture for them to be open to the idea of F1.

  • Ollie26/03/2010 at 01:18

Whoah, Mr C has developed an inclination towards capital letters and writing in the third person as well as admitting he may have been wrong. And on top of that, he's loving Di Grassi sunning it up on the beach, board in tow. What's going on!?

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2010 at 03:49

    I never understood why the government didn't run the lottery and use it as a source of income. {Comment #49}

Because when they originally mooted the idea, having it put the proceeds into charity helped get the item through Parliament. They're using it to help defray the costs of the Olympics and many other charities save the government money by doing things the government would have to do if they didn't exist. The goverment may well have the best of all worlds - the efficiencies of the private sector with the ability to save money on certain forms of expenditure (albeit indirectly) plus the support of the public for putting the money into somewhere other than the government's own pockets.

  • guille230626/03/2010 at 03:50

China's and Turkey's are due, if not others as well. Both circuits specifically mentioned are vulnerable and one of them (maybe both) could easily lose its slot to make way for other events.

Hehe. I don't have a favourite driver or team in terms of driving. I have a couple I don't like but other than that, I cheer for good racing.

What makes me wonder, though, is how Virgin ended up ordering the wrong size of fuel tank if there's fuel consumption figures to base it on? Mr. Branson will not be pleased.

Well the RubberGoat Racing System did not have a very good day out - it was soundly beaten by it's bitter rivals from Trinidad (the Samsite Squad).

It seems that those who chose a fixed budget and picked good drivers had a distinct advantage - the top 10 teams in the league all chose the fixed strategy.

RubberGoat hopes that it's lineup changes in the Premier team make a big difference, and that not many surprises happen this weekend ;)

I did the same. Good luck :)

  • Nathan26/03/2010 at 10:06

Well, Albert Park, in 2 practice sessions, has provided much more entertainment and 'spectacle' than the entire weekend in Bahrain.

5live crew are legends. Absolute legends.

And I have some love left for Karun and his curries, too.

  • Elissa26/03/2010 at 10:07

I like Karun...he's my newbie team driver to support. Did he get any running in?

Literally locked in. The gates were locked and the guards outside didnt have the key. We got a lift to the other side of the track where the gate was still open with some random delivery man in a truck. Sooo funny

I think it's a CFD fail in some way. You could be cynical and say that they planned to short fuel their car to make it look faster, knowing they wouldn't finish anyway...

Not too much in FP2, but in the 1st practice he got 19 laps under his belt I think.

I think he's my favourite rookie too - sounds like a top bloke, and his friendliness with Ant is only a good thing.

Love the comment on the rankings, nice to see that the awesomeness that is Sidepodcast is being recognised.

Am out for leaving drinks tonight with work. I will apologise in advance for any drunken tweeting/facebook/comments.

I may not make live qualifying tomorrow but I know the FBFB will give me the full story. Have a good Friday :)

    From the page:

Note - Doohickey is female because she can handle comments across 20 threads simultaneously. LCLT is male, because he can only do one thing at a time.

    HA! :P

isn't it past midnight there already? :)

  • Mel (USA)26/03/2010 at 13:19

Morning! (at least here it is!) Fell asleep right before start of FP2, so watching the replay at my desk this morning. I'm really trying harder this year to watch sessions live and pair them with all of the other live streaming data available as it makes the race experience so much more interesting!

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 13:20

    good evening from down under

    hello!

I think that is somewhere between my hotel and the track :-) I will see how the morning goes and what the rest of the family will want to do before I disappear for the F1 action :-)

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:32

Did you tell Lewis to call me?

sadly I spoke no words to this years wold champion. When I first went to his side of the garage after he came in he was about a metre away from me because he came out to see how much it was raining. I was just like 'woah, its Lewis, right there!'

Did I wave or say hi? It's all such a blur. He waved back at me yesterday at the proper autograph signing.

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:33

Has anyone else noticed that Renault are sponsored by DIAC, who are a financial institution specialising in car finance, which Renault the car company holds an interest in?

Now if that's not funny money I don't know what is ;)

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:34

Did I wave or say hi? It's all such a blur. He waved back at me yesterday at the proper autograph signing.

The difference between autograph signing drivers and 2-minutes-before-practice drivers is amazing!

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 13:34

Did you tell Lewis to call me?

i was tempted to attempt to give him my business card :)

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 13:34

Has anyone else noticed that Renault are sponsored by DIAC, who are a financial institution specialising in car finance, which Renault the car company holds an interest in?

I thought it was fully owned - so says the Renault F1 website.

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:34

I am happy for the leaders of sidepodcast to pass my details on to you and vice-versa if that is a better way to do it

not sure why but this trip anything internet related seems to be working against me :-) I will try to show up at the cafe if the morning situation permits

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:36

I thought it was fully owned - so says the Renault F1 website.

    That's even worse!

why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher?

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:36

The difference between autograph signing drivers and 2-minutes-before-practice drivers is amazing!

that hadn't occurred to me before. is it the race suit or something more?

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 13:37

why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher?

or tony fernandes running lotus, for that matter.

  • F1Wolf26/03/2010 at 13:37

why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher?

... and most of the other brands on their livery

I thought it was fully owned - so says the Renault F1 website.

    That's even worse!

why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher?

    It isn't really is it?

Is that really putting money into the team or is it just cooking the books?

I thought the idea of sponsorship was that an external source provided additional funds to assist the assets of the operation?

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:37

that hadn't occurred to me before. is it the race suit or something more?

its just a super intense focus. Plus Hamilton in his race suit looks soooo tiny but Hamilton in his team kit looks normal sized. I was just like 'wow! he's tiny!' today. I hear he has been a naughty boy tonight?

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:38

why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher?

... and most of the other brands on their livery

seems like common sense to fill empty space with a brand you own.

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:38

...Or is it the two pints over lunch talking?

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 13:38

that hadn't occurred to me before. is it the race suit or something more?

perhaps it's the fact that they're thinking of setups and what-not? while at autograph signings, they can focus on the fans. :)

  • paul26/03/2010 at 13:38

its just a super intense focus. Plus Hamilton in his race suit looks soooo tiny but Hamilton in his team kit looks normal sized. I was just like 'wow! he's tiny!' today. I hear he has been a naughty boy tonight?

    Oh?

  • F1Wolf26/03/2010 at 13:38

did I hear well on the BBC radio earlier today mention of Sidepodcast ? it was way too loud with many cars at that time but I think someone was talking about you

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:38

Is that really putting money into the team or is it just cooking the books?

    eh?

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:39

    Yeah I guess so ;)

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:39

    Oh?

Lee Mckenzie: Lewis hamilton sent out statement that tonight he was stopped by police for driving in "over exuberant manner" and apologises.

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 13:39

did I hear well on the BBC radio earlier today mention of Sidepodcast ? it was way too loud with many cars at that time but I think someone was talking about you

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:39

Is that really putting money into the team or is it just cooking the books?

    eh?

If you 'sponsor' yourself, what's happening with the money? it's just re-distributing an asset you already own isn't it?

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:40

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:40

Hamilton and Melbourne ... can't be without an incident :-)

    It doesn't I guess...

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:41

    Hehe Donuts or speeding?

more details from adam cooper: Lewis Hamilton is in trouble with the Melbourne place after doing burnouts with his loaned Mercedes just after he left the track Apparently they impounded the car and he has been summoned to appear tomorrow. He's already issued an apolgy by way of a press release

  • Lisa26/03/2010 at 13:41

If you 'sponsor' yourself, what's happening with the money? it's just re-distributing an asset you already own isn't it?

But Renault don't own most of RF1 now, do they? So it is effectively new money?

  • F1Wolf26/03/2010 at 13:41

    Hehe Donuts or speeding?

Donuts, and he has been summoned by police to appear tomorrow. How about at the time of quali :-) ?

oops. he could loose that car if Vic police are anything to go by

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:42

Of course! It's mostly Genii Capital now isn't it?

So I guess it's different to the FIF1 situation then.

Is it kinda cool drivers are caught pushing accpetable limits on roads?

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 13:43

Is it kinda cool drivers are caught pushing accpetable limits on roads?

    no.

    no.

    Meh :-)

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 13:43

oops. he could loose that car if Vic police are anything to go by

Merc will just lend him another one. Hehe.

Summoned to appear tomorrow? I'm expecting that to conveniently get delayed to Monday... :D

  • RubberGoat26/03/2010 at 13:43

Is it kinda cool drivers are caught pushing accpetable limits on roads?

    no.

Agreed. They should get their kicks on the racetrack rather than the road...

  • Lisa26/03/2010 at 13:44

Is it kinda cool drivers are caught pushing accpetable limits on roads?

I don't think so - they might be able to cope with what they do but you have to consider that most other road users do not have the same abilities.

  • Elissa26/03/2010 at 13:45

Oh I hope it don't wreck his qualifying

How is doing burnouts illegal? I see enogh chavs do them round our town center and the police don't bother them

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 13:45

according to autosport it was on Lakeside Drive, half of which is part of the circuit and the other half of which is the exit from the drivers car park and is a closed road to the public so maybe he thought he was safe. Still very silly though.

  • me26/03/2010 at 13:45

Is it kinda cool drivers are caught pushing accpetable limits on roads?

well, they're better drivers than most. and likely know the limits of the car.

burnouts in an empty street are fun :)

    Ah I could slap Lewis!

He better not ruin any points for the team....I hope hope hope he's still able to qualify tomorrow...

Tell me they won't summon him during a practice/qualifying session...

I bet Whitmarsh is having a PR meltdown...Ron will be on the phone..

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 13:53

Tell me they won't summon him during a practice/qualifying session...

they wont get a judge in for that on a saturday :)

    Go Lewis!

As a hoon, i think its awesome that he enjoys his driving. I want to be all politically correct and say he did a bad thing but i trust his judgement that it was safe. i wonder who was in the car with him.

As a hoon, i think its awesome that he enjoys his driving. I want to be all politically correct and say he did a bad thing but i trust his judgement that it was safe. i wonder who was in the car with him.

Excuse my lack of Oz knowledge...what's a HOON?

obnoxious driver who does burnouts etc. Usually teenager or early twenties. quite often wearing flannelette shirt or hoodie. Fellow Aussies, is this a good enough definition?

I bet Whitmarsh is having a PR meltdown...Ron will be on the phone.

Y'know, it never ceases to amuse that to us F1 fans, Ron is always Ron but Martin is always Whitmarsh...

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 14:02

"Police sources would only confirm that a 25-year-old British citizen and resident of Switzerland would be charged on summons after an incident at 9.15 pm."

So just so you all know... I am really really looking forward to this weekend's Giggles Radio... If you haven't tuned in / aren't sure about tuning in / give it a go this weekend. Great music and waffle what more could you want?

I have been listening to the music selection all week this week. I is clearly a good letter.

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 14:11

also, the next (third) time I see Crofty I promise to actually realise its him before he walks off and stop going "I think thats him...I'm not sure...is that him?"

I have now done that twice.

so I just went to lunch, chicken sandwich and a half of bitter with the other office staff... one of whom is off for maternity leave and brought her baby, so babies and weights and things were the topic for much of the hour. would've sort of preferred to have stayed here.

  • Christine26/03/2010 at 14:40

so I just went to lunch, chicken sandwich and a half of bitter with the other office staff... one of whom is off for maternity leave and brought her baby, so babies and weights and things were the topic for much of the hour. would've sort of preferred to have stayed here.

Argh! People always get upset with me when they tell me baby weights and I'm like: "Is that big?"

As if I'm meant to know these things.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2010 at 14:41

I thought it was fully owned - so says the Renault F1 website.

    That's even worse!

    why. how is it different from mallya running kingfisher? {Comment #302}

Because Mallya bought Spyker partly as a vehicle for advertising his companies. Did Renault buy Bennetton to advertise the subsidiaries? Maybe (or maybe part of the purpose has changed in recent years), but nobody at the team has thought to tell us.

The idea that a fully owned subsidiary can sponsor a team part-owned by the subsidiary's owner is no problem at all to me. However, I do prefer teams that are prepared to be at least somewhat transparent concerning their activities.

  • me26/03/2010 at 14:43

Argh! People always get upset with me when they tell me baby weights and I'm like: "Is that big?"

the correct answer is always "awwwww".

    can't go wrong with that.

  • Elissa26/03/2010 at 14:44

so I just went to lunch, chicken sandwich and a half of bitter with the other office staff... one of whom is off for maternity leave and brought her baby, so babies and weights and things were the topic for much of the hour. would've sort of preferred to have stayed here.

I feel for you! My friends are always inviting me to baby showers and asking when i'm next etc?

    Nope....adoption...the way forward :-)

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2010 at 14:45

    If you 'sponsor' yourself, what's happening with the money? it's just re-distributing an asset you already own isn't it? {Comment #317}

It's a bit like when one department of a company spends the income generated by another part, but replacing "department" with "company". Vijay Mallya probably considers his whole conglomerate as one big meta-company that happens to have several dozen registrations (one per "meta-department").

  • Pat W26/03/2010 at 14:45

Argh! People always get upset with me when they tell me baby weights and I'm like: "Is that big?"

It was that, and also what its like to do things with them around, and putting the other kid into school, and losing weight afterwards.

Hello, I am a single male and we're out for my birthday.

    #needy

  • Christine26/03/2010 at 14:45

Yea, but then they bring them in and you end up in Pat's position, having to aww at the actual baby.

Far better to be disinterested from the outset.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2010 at 14:46

Red tape. Governmental regulations. Largely so that the tax system doesn't completely unravel.

  • Elissa26/03/2010 at 14:47

Yea, but then they bring them in and you end up in Pat's position, having to aww at the actual baby.

I've never got why women do that! I'd never want my work lot prying their beady eyes over any nippers I may have!

I especially get all hoity toity when I have collections shoved in my face at work for christenings etc...sorry but i'm a tight bird! He can pay ha ha

  • me26/03/2010 at 14:47

Yea, but then they bring them in and you end up in Pat's position, having to aww at the actual baby.

well, yeah. you can't really go "eeeeww!"

Far better to be disinterested from the outset.

you could point out that the person in question very likely reducing the life of the planet considerably by bringing another person into the world, and that their carbon footprint just went through the roof.

not sure that'll go down too well either.

No. One of our people is having twins and got signed off from work yesterday extra early because of stress or whatever. She came round hugging everyone goodbye.

I just said bye. I think we're meant to be happy that she's getting a month off just because she decided to procreate.

Mm. I wasn't specifically mad about the maternity leave because that's a whole other thing. It was the extra month because there are two of them.

Very rarely I think, my mates obsessed with Heat magazine (yes another zeleb lover) and she's always fawning over Holly...you never she her pictured with her kids or here them mentioned in interviews..apart from ...i love my kids etc...

Heidfeld as Chairman, with Massa and Vettel as directors.

ooh, she gets to watch phil and holly.

Is it as good as Phil and Fern? I think there are a load of dodgy soaps and gameshows too. And the Jerry Springer ripoff merchants.

Heidfeld as Chairman, with Massa and Vettel as directors.

Is the role of GPDA Chairman so taxing now that a test driver (who has free time on his hands) has to take the role?

Probably nothing more than coincidence, but all 3 are friendly with Schumi. :)

Is the role of GPDA Chairman so taxing now that a test driver (who has free time on his hands) has to take the role?

That's what DLR was saying the other day, he couldn't do it because his race driver duties were too much to do both

  • Pat W26/03/2010 at 15:21

Morning folks. Seems lewis got himself into trouble with the police in australia. Crash.net has a report on it.

    So has Autosport:

The McLaren driver did a burnout and a fishtail in a Mercedes car along Lakeside Drive in Melbourne and as a result he was pulled over by police.

Morning folks. Seems lewis got himself into trouble with the police in australia. Crash.net has a report on it.

it occurs to me, that it's slightly poor timing given the FIA's new "make roads safe" campaign.

  • Journeyer26/03/2010 at 15:24

That's what DLR was saying the other day, he couldn't do it because his race driver duties were too much to do both

Hmmm. I find this a bit odd, considering before DLR, Schumi held the Chairmanship for the longest time and had no problem balancing it with his work. And before him, Senna was supposed to be the Chairman for a lot longer than he ended up being one.

  • Stuart C26/03/2010 at 15:24

I love how it's all Ferrari at the top and McLaren has been shunted to the very bottom of the page.

    Oh, those branding guidelines.

Ginga has just stopped by with the following delicious proposition: if I ring up to interview someone for the site, and they’re not expecting my call, I’ll be able to say “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!”

  • me26/03/2010 at 15:25

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 15:25

it occurs to me, that it's slightly poor timing given the FIA's new "make roads safe" campaign.

the report in our paper says "Hamilton was visibly upset as his car was towed away. It's understood he told police he was worried the incident would dent his reputation.

"It would have been fair to say he was fairly disappointed," Sen-Constable Scott Woodford said."

A witness said the 2008 world Grand Prix champion tried to hide his face from spectators.

He said as he approached the driver, Hamilton slumped down and tried to hide.

"That's when I got there. He had his head between his legs. He looked like he was thinking 'oh my God, what the hell', " said the witness.

Hamilton will be charged by summons with improper use of a vehicle.

His car was impounded by the Traffic Management Unit.

The witness told the Herald Sun police ushered the star into the back of an unmarked police car for an interview.

"It was pretty cool to watch. He was hiding in his car," the witness said. "They (police) knew who he was."

  • Stuart C26/03/2010 at 15:25

it's slightly poor timing given the FIA's new "make roads safe" campaign.

But perfect timing with 'unintended acceleration' being in the news...

they did. for 04, i specifically remember them paying out early - after Round 5, to be exact, when Schumi won the first 5 in a row, they just gave up.

You're not factoring Massa or Button in, though?

    Button.....hmm...ok! He'll be a solid top 8 finish...you really think he'll do Lewis?

  • Elissa26/03/2010 at 16:30

    Why no love for Jarno?

Apart from being the biggest hypocrite on the grid...ie complaining about drivers 'weaving' in the braking zones and then doing the same, the whole Sutil incident last year...my biggest reason is he comes across so bitter towards anyone better...seems to have very little nice things to say about others...

The clincher for me....when other teams work out race strategies based on if they're stuck behind Trulli it says it all!!

In short... slow and moany....not attractive.

  • Amy26/03/2010 at 16:30

I like Jenson but he moans far too much for my liking...put a sock in it JB and just drive

It's weird as I have never thought of him this way but I do think (sorry lou) that he has been rather over exposed this year by Macca...

He has done at least two interviews/PR stunts for every one of Lewis's unless each interview has led to two stories rather than one.....

Last year Heikki was soo far below the radar he was virtually unseen... a virtual Heikki... whilst Lewis was everywhere....

I've been thinking this has been an amazing turn around by Lewis and wondered if it was a bit of a bid to avoid over exposure after the first three years had us rather "over Lewised".... but now we are "over Buttoned"...

    Has anyone else noticed this?...

And I do realise that everyone would say that I would not complain if it were Kimi...and that's true... but perhaps that's partly because PR over exposure of Kimi in PR stunts and interviews ain't going to happen....

Hello all, just catching up with FP! and FP2 on iplayer, well done whoever got the sidepodcast mention!

I am sure this has been discussed before, but I cant find it at the moment... why does Schumacher appear on the graphics as MSC? Must be a good reason, but I can't think of one!

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 18:48

why does Schumacher appear on the graphics as MSC?

Goes back to when Ralf was racing - couldn't have two "Sch"'s, so it became MSC and RSC and has stayed like that ever since

  • Neil Denham26/03/2010 at 18:51

Hmm, seems a bit odd, I we don't muddle the current Bruno with Ayrton, I know they could never have raced at the same time, but it seems strange to be affected by a driver no longer taking part!

I will trust you are right though!

For some reason I put a £2 bet on Sutil winning the race on Sunday, I must have lost my mind...

  • rethymnoracer26/03/2010 at 18:51

    Ralf still uses RSC.

He has just started a team in GP3 with team Mucke called MSC Mucke Motorsport.

  • Pat W26/03/2010 at 21:01

Easier to install (the CD isn't buggy bloatware).

More ethernet ports so now I can have my NAS drive on it as well as the PC and Vision box.

The onboard software is easier to use (although perhaps fewer options).

And it looks nicer, curvy with blue lights instead of blocky with green. :) Bit smaller too.

I think the cop must have been looking to make a name for himself. Impounding a car for a little wheelspin is over the top. A slap on the wrists would have been enough. No need to make an international incident out of it.

Everyone in Q3.. and perhaps the rest of the grid will start on softs too because they'll expect an early safety car. You don't want to stay out when everyone else pits, unless you can rebuild a lead after the SC. In theory the softs should do that over the hards but it didn't happen in Bahrain because new hards overruled worn softs..

s the role of GPDA Chairman so taxing now that a test driver (who has free time on his hands) has to take the role?

Probably nothing more than coincidence, but all 3 are friendly with Schumi. :) {Comment #476

No. It's just that the test drivers seem to be more enthusiastic about doing the job at the moment...

Also, Schumi isn't in the GPDA any more because he thinks that the current members are doing a good job (or something like that).

    Hi Adie

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2010 at 22:15

    I find this a bit odd, considering before DLR, Schumi held the Chairmanship for the longest time and had no problem balancing it with his work. And before him, Senna was supposed to be the Chairman for a lot longer than he ended up being one. {Comment #484}

Not to mention DC and Ralf Schumacher have also combined F1 with GPDA directorship just fine. I seem to recall de la Rosa got voted into the directorship with considerable reluctance in the first place, so maybe it's not surprising that he wanted to get out of the role as soon as decently possible.

  • Darryl26/03/2010 at 22:18

    Paul,

You have no idea what lengths are gone to in Victoria policing the road rules ! The leeway for speeding is 3km and doesn't matter if that's at 50km or on a freeway at 110km, and it slso doesn't matter that Australian design rules don't call for speedo's to be that accurate. They have contractors with speed camera's everywhere............

It really is a Police state when it comes to motoring, it is zero tolerance for everything ! It would be nice if they spent the same amount of time chasing real crimes.................

I have lived in many of Australia's states and territory's (incl VIC) and I can only ask that you don't judge the rest by Victoria's over zealous and revenue grabing actions on the poor motorist's. The real offensive part is that Australia is a VERY large country and personal vehicle transport is a must. Public transport is rubbish and mismanaged. It could do with some Police input in resolving the crime..............

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 22:19

Despite the fact that Nick has been a F1 driver for a good 10 seasons?

He is not exactly a top driver and Vettel is too young. Schumacher got thrown in at the deep end after Senna died even though he was quite young but he had least was a world champion and was clearly the top driver.

It's the inconvenience factor. You tend to remember the times when you hire a car because your silly behaviour lost you access to your normal one. Somehow I doubt Lewis will ever repeat this mistake (except on track where such "mistakes" are appreciated, of course).

For you and me in that situation it would be inconvenient but for him it is just a phone call if that. The car probably belongs to Mercedes anyway so they will either give him another or he will be driven for the rest of the weekend.

I doubt that will happen. More likely the hearing would be on Monday (or at least Sunday after the race), thus extending the time this is in the air and giving the authorities time to decide exactly what to do about it. Wouldn't surprise me if Lewis was asked to do some sort of road safety promotion work, either in addition to or instead of some normal part of the punishment.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 22:46

I think the fact that the top drivers are not prepared to put the effort in is shocking. If there is a dispute there are drivers far more able than Heidfeld to get the drivers' point across. If you look at the history the GPDA has been successful when it has had a strong, vocal leader.

And it's not had one since Schumacher, and even he was a bit muted because of his strong links to the FIA.

Things are improving compared to a few years back though - there's probably only a dew drivers who aren't members, and apart from Schumi the non-members are those who can't afford to join (note that some people who you might expect not to be able to afford membership, such as Chandhok, are members of the GPDA).

    Nope

If I wasn't working tomorrow, I'd be doing the same :(

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 23:05

    How was your St Pat's?

Quiet - a mate of mine was leaving London to go back to home to his folks, so it was slightly sombre to be honest

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 23:06

  • Jeremy26/03/2010 at 23:12

Question to all; what do we think of the Times/Sunday Times move to subscription news?

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 23:20

Question to all; what do we think of the Times/Sunday Times move to subscription news?

Overpriced in the market butI guess they're desperate [And Murdoch wants to rinse everyone's wallet]

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 23:21

    Hmmmm.....

Not sure I'm that bothered - there's still so many news outlets. Their real value lies in their commentary and specialised articles

  • Lukeh26/03/2010 at 23:21

Question to all; what do we think of the Times/Sunday Times move to subscription news?

Stupid idea but it won't affect me, don't care for the Times. Same old Ruper Murdoch.

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 23:21

Question to all; what do we think of the Times/Sunday Times move to subscription news?

I think th iPad will help a lot of people get accustomed to paying for more media in this fashion. Just as the iPod did

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 23:24

Question to all; what do we think of the Times/Sunday Times move to subscription news?

It will fail spectacularly because no-one is going to pay

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 23:24

I think th iPad will help a lot of people get accustomed to paying for more media in this fashion. Just as the iPod did

Not so sure about that. I guess I'm just one of many that cannot see the point of the iPad and I can't see how it would change people's perception of paying for media

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2010 at 23:24

I think thats where i sit, its the way things are going and i think thats positive but it dosent work as a business model if what you want is already free elsewhere.

I think th iPad will help a lot of people get accustomed to paying for more media in this fashion. Just as the iPod did

    i hope so.

  • Pat W26/03/2010 at 23:25

  • Lukeh26/03/2010 at 23:25

oooh forgot about that, had a hectic week and been ill for the past 2 days, will do it now

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 23:25

One of the newspapers in America tried the paywall. After 6 months they had 35 paid up subscribers

I can see the FT & WSJ having some moderate success though

  • Steven Roy26/03/2010 at 23:31

Wall Street Journal has been a big success but that is an entirely different market. People make money from that info and in many cases companies are buying the subscriptions

  • Bassano26/03/2010 at 23:33

I agree but I think this is where RM has got it wrong because the model works for the financial news and consumers will take a lot of convincing

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 23:53

I really should get some sleep before practice - I've been up since pre-practice 2...

Unfortunately Bassano, I'm so awake I'm not sure I can drop off - my sleeping patterns can be a bit....... weird

That happens a lot here :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2010 at 23:58

This is an old condition I'm afraid. Up until about two weeks ago I was living on 4-5 hours every night, but my sleep has been fine up until the last few days.

Back on the exhaustion grind again it would seem.
