Hello and welcome to Thursday! It's not normally a good day for the Sidepodcommunity, but we will instead concentrate on good things. Congratulations to Jon who passed his driving test a couple of days ago. Also celebrations for Alex who got a promotion yesterday, which is awesome. We'll also keep our fingers crossed for Amy who is in the process of attempting to get a promotion.
- Talking of Amy, she is spearheading the breakfast effort in Australia, meeting up with other F1-bound visitors to chat and talk and eat croissants or similar. We seem to have a record number of Sidepodvisitors to this Grand Prix, so we've set them up with a dedicated thread.
- The subject of meetups is a popular one at the moment as well, because there's a London meetup in the planning stages - with more information available on the wiki. If you're available in the midst of April, head on over and note your name down. Sidepodmeetups are the best!
- With the refuelling ban still a hot topic, Leigh has written a post about the change in regulations, asking if the ban came too soon. It's probably worth plugging Steven's post again as there has been lots of debate in the comments. If you read the post and moved on, please head on back and see what other people are saying about the way F1 should be.
That's all for today, don't forget we've got all the preview information you need ahead of the Australia weekend - including maps and schedules, plus the Digest Preview podcast as well. That should keep you busy for a while, and then I will see you in the comments.
Yaaaaaaaaay I made the daily :)
*Has a peek at Thursday*
Less than 25 hours till F1 cars are moving fast again
Which Alex got a promotion, Giggles or Aus?
Roll on Thursday!
for once, i agree!
the big G
Good for him
So is he like Chief Professor now?
Pics In the camera for later
I accidentally subscribed to the Money Box podcast on itunes. Is it wrong that I started listening to it and am finding it rather soothing?
We need to teach you a few things about instant publishing sir ;)
Well done though, enjoy your day
he is: andronov, alex
apparently.
It's odd that you didn't instantly delete it, full stop :D
I saw that conversation earlier on. I hope he finds the new arm handy
heheh!
The man's voice is very relaxing :)
Mr C, did you see that there's a free Justin.TV app now?
Haven't tried it yet
ooh, no. will have a look in a bit.
Google maps is a bit odd, i'm trying to work out the bus routes between 2 places and i go to google maps before traveline, anyway, it keeps trying to put me on buses that only secondary school kids are allowed on! grr
Can't you look at the bus company's website?
i have done, but it dosent show every stop, so i just wanted to check exact-ish times
Do you not have some kind of local travel planning website. Merseyside had the best one I've ever seen, It'd search door to door, none of that school bus rubbish!
Transport for London's is surprisingly good
Much better than National Rail
A & p lining up for autographs
Shouldn't this be in the 'From the Frontline' thread?
Lou! We found A brawn jenson jacket for you!!
You're not a mobile doohickeyer then? Breakouts = nightmare!
oops
I'm fortunate enough to be able to use the full fat doohickey whilst mobile :D
So's Paul by the look of it I now see.... :P
http://bit.ly/c0SdoR I really am the coolest person alive
What is that ridiculous bib? Are you a netball player?
yeeouch!
;)
Yes, it's a big team, I am the 5257th player to join the team
Mr C,
Are you aware this site had launched?
http://www.pitlanemagazine.com/magazine/
im more surprised she didnt mension that im holding some sort of small furry thing in my hand
oooh, i was not. ta.
I'm too busy playing with my cool new watch to say anything else mean.... :P
although... it's a website? i thought it was going to be a pdf emag?
shhh
thats what i thought! how odd.
Neither was I and I am supposed to be writing for them. Haven't even had a e-mail to let me know it was up. Someone linked in Joe's comments
by nick daman: http://www.pitlanemagazine.com/magazine/?p=200
must've been a quite launch then.
I assumed it was going to be a website but I am not sure if I was told that or I assumed it was just going to be like F1-Pitlane was
Am getting
"The SSL Certificate is not trusted"
Don't break it
They have some well known people who are supposed to write stuff.
What anti virus?
Not stylish, stoopid
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/melbourne-formula-1-grand-prix-grid-girl-outfits-panned/story-e6frf7jo-1225845044331
None
Though it was clicked from DD so Adobe Air is probably just being annoying again
Blimey that's hideous! I'd rather they went back to being naked....
why?
apart from hte fact that they look rediculous.
clearly
bring back the fosters girls.
Agreed
Tis the only thing Fosters was any good at

one of the comments:
I have a hard time giving credibility to anyone who spoofs people with youtube cartoons and has no acquaintance with the rules of punctuation.
ouch
It's the shorts that really get me!! They must be literally roasting in those boots too.
they'll deal with it, its what they choose to do for a living (dont get me started ;) )
i dont see what the issue is really, they look a bit silly but its different
The silliness is the issue
I wasn't making any kind of wider point. It's just that they look ridiculous and it must be very uncomfortable. There's no reason for anything to be both....
Oh, and the complete and utter lack of anything flattering or stylish
its different, some people will like it some wont, you'll see them for 20 minutes on sunday and then they'll be gone.
I guess its what the designer wanted
Having the silly designs talked about negatively is not the point the organisers were hoping to make
May get the sponsors more coverage though
surely the point they were trying to make was "we dont need to have 20 people with nothing on standing by cars, they could actually be wearing clothes"
whether the right clothes with chosen is a different matter, but its the premise that counts.
I disagree, it's a well executed premise that counts
Errr they're wearing leather shorts and knee high boots.... That's hardly a step away from the page 3 model :P
yeah but i think the principle still has value, even if its not to the full extent that it could have been too
is the race sponsored this year?
are they not simply saying, we have no budget, sorry.
We don't need them there full stop. They are only there for the initial lap to the grid when there are already 20 mechanics ready to pounce as soon as the car stops.
i definitely agree with that
surely more clothes like that would cost more than a 1 piece skin tight thing?
Just found this tweet [from @F1Enigma]:
Prodrive will have a board meeting tomorow to discuss the 2011 F1 registration
Interesting
Qantas as it says on the grid girls backs
http://www.formula1.com/races/in_detail/australia_825/circuit_diagram.html
you forgot the clapping to the podium.
yeah but its not skin tight 1 piece lycra suit things, they still want men to gawp at them
Didn't Qantas just re-sign?
ah-ha
I'd rather go out in a swimsuit than those shorts....
I am sure the V&A would be happy about that
That's gonna happen regardless of what they're wearing tbh
if it was your choice then yeah, but if it was your job and your rent depended on it, you'd wear what your told to wear
within reason yeah
What's that got to do with anything?
I think Jon's saying Models wear what they are told to [broadly speaking]
pretty much. yes it looks rediculous but they gotta wear it
Of course they do. I wasn't saying look at those stupid women.
didnt say you were, my point wasnt at you, it was a general point.
im up in 5 hours, so bed for me, night
Night Jon
in fairness to albert park. they tried fosters boys one year.
that went well!
I feel sick just thinking about that!
Mr C, have you got a US iTunes account yet, for the iBookstore?
[PayPal is accepted]
how does one get a US paypal account?
Logout of your iTunes account, create a new one with with a US address [I used a hotel]
You can switch between the two
Sorry, I missed the detail
You don't need a US PayPal, just iTunes
i get that.
how do i get a paypal account based in the US?
I've only picked up free stuff from the US store so far but I can't see how your PayPal needs to be from anywhere in particular
interesting. let us know if it lets ya.
Sometime in late April, I certainly will
Need to get Alex to digitise The Book With The Missing... too
Though I guess I could buy a 99¢ app
Shall try tomorrow
An hour of tv before sleeps
G'night peeps
lost? see ya sir.
Good night
No one wants to see chandock. Everyone loves senna :-)
Poor Chandhok
Midweek Motorsport has turned into the Dan Brunel show. Well done Dan
Jeremy is pimping sidepodcast. He has a card with the url he is keeping to give to a driver.
Oops
don't sweat it. if you comment again on t'other thread, deleting is easier for us than moving. but we expect nothing less and we'll happily fix it all.
pls keep us fed with info.
night steven
She asked for questions from the crowd and jeremys was "have you heard of christine on the internet and sidepodcast.com?"
Hello, folks.
morning all
Someone may have mentioned this already, but @NobleF1 mentioned that Sauber are testing a Duct system similar to McLaren's before Quali & Race.
It's in a different location, on the Sidepod.
Link to Autosport Story from Noble's twitter post
http://bit.ly/cSXnjh
Morning.
Johnny Noble raises an interesting point - if De La Rosa was a test driver for McLaren for two years, how come he didn't tell Sauber about it as soon as he got the drive?
maybe a non-disclosure agreement was signed after the spy scandal. an email between pedro and anando was part of the evidence wasn't it?
Given that they now have the system, he probably did?
Morning everyone. Thanks for the shoutout in the daily :)
more from scarbs/sutton http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/sauber-to-trial-an-f-duct/
Yay for promotions!
I have gotten mine, just waiting for the visa to make it official
It sounds like they cobbled together a system quick after Bahrain...
I dont think its that easy from what i have read.
If it was, why are they the only team to have managed it? surely better funded teams in the top four would have versions by now too?
Because they are nimble like Brawn were?
I think the clue here is that Sauber's system does not involve modifying the 'tub', which cannot be changed after homologation. So when was that?
Morning, quick thing before I head out. This update from Legard bugs me
http://twitter.com/legardj/statuses/11023894973
*shakes fist at the force within Darth Schumacher*
Brawn were nimble?
They started with a good car, made some changes which made it worse, went back to what they had, but were still unable to challenge for wins in the post European season!
I guess whenever it was crash tested
Which was when? End of last year?
Lou if you are around, here is the gift we got you/found for you :D

funny that Kristensen is listed as an advisor to the stewards at Mellbourne, whereas Prost was announced a steward. Hill, Mansell etc. were all touted as future stewards.
Is this a backpedal?
Also I thought we were going to have ex world champions. Second race and we don't even have an F1 driver!
John
No, This is a backpedal: http://diannej.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/backpedaling34.jpg
Perhaps no one who was keen to do it was available?
Nick,
funny graphic! my point about hte backpedal was that at this race the driver is now an advisor rather than a fully feldged steward. i.e. no vote on any decision. Is this a backpedal?
Possibly, i guess its a small step, its much better than having an FIA chrony there. If the advisor is ignored i guess they can tell the press so i expect their imput will be heard
True, i suppose the idea behind having a champ or in this case a hugely respected sportscar driver is that they can speak their mind without fear of FIA backlash
I have received Stuart's bookywook!
Morning all.
Looks like someone else has got their copy...
http://tinyurl.com/yckfwkn
That's synchronicity, that is, and I'm not talking about an album released by a popular beat combo led by Gordon Sumner...
:(
whoops I meant :)
Here's a picture...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-jpg-8
I added a Trabant for scale
Had forgotten how big the book is. Did the postie require sherpas to get it up the steps?
cripes, does it come with a house to store it in?
Oh my god i just got a call from the uk. Going on a mclaren pit tour tomorrow! And because jeremy is a member too i asked if he can come too and he said yes! AH SO EXCITED
Goodness! Go you!
Can this trip get any better?
McLaren are really stepping things up on the fan participation front this year, aren't they?
:D :D :D
Even I can't find anything to complain about!
Oh no wait, the website. Phew.
You what?
Knew I should have joined
Haha, love it :)
I like the website, Its so much nicer having text big enough to read!
Wow that's fantastic! Just randomely out of the blue?
Why am I not surprised?
Clearly Jeremy's continuous mentions of sidepodcast is working
Just out of the blue! Considering their website says they will let you know 2 weeks in advance. He apologised for calling so late so someone else maybe cancelled. I was just crossing my fingers he wasnt going to say tomorrow at 10am! pamela also sent me the heikki photos and he really did look excited to see my flag!
Looks like that Pit lane magazine has run out of steam already. No Australian GP preview up yet and no new content for almost a fortnight...
I got very confused when I saw a tweet flying around that a new issue was to be released on some such date. It looks suspiciously like a blog, and I'm not sure how you combine that with issues.
He's publishing tomorrow. I have submitted four articles to him.
It was being hawked about as an e-zine with "the very latest in turn page technology" but, yes, looks like a wordpress-powered blog...
He has changed it to a blog, yes. I don't know why though.
Seems odd. With a blog you need regular updates rather than everything all in one hit.
I did find it strange that I submitted my articles 10 days ago and he didn't publish them. Seems like combining the worst of print and e-media to me...
Hey everyone, I'm at school with nothing to do/ not really wanting to do anything. All having a nice day so far?
Same bloke was hawking around a 'revolutionary' thing called Grand Prix League this time last year. Some sort of betting thing. It has vanished...
Not bad for a Thursday. Are you feeling better?
Well he has convinced a few people to write for him, I did see a Nick Daman article on there...
Hi. I'm slowly easing myself back into work. Still nice and chilled out so not in any great hurry to lose that. :)
Kind of keeping comments at arms-length until I get caught up on work though.
Yeah thanks ;)
am feeling a little better, i'm only really at school to talk to my textiles teachers about my interview tomorrow and to ask for some last few tips. wish i was at home in bed though :)
i knew it! couldn't find a quote to back it up mind you, cheers.
tis ok. Did you see we found you a jacket?
*checks post*
amy mentioned a brawn thing?... but i've no way to get on twitter or anything at school :( but.. do tell me more... actually for me?
indeedy. Black jenson button #22 brawn jacket.
Mine actually arrived yesterday but I was wfh... I believe this is because of how much money I
spend with Amazon.
really?????
we wouldn't make this up. Others can confirm the twitpic
I.love.you.all. This has made my day!! Much love to you all in Ausi :) :D :D this has made me feel slightly better :)
by the sounds of it you're all having / have had (no idea about the time..) an awesome day so far.. we're gonna need some posts about it :)
That's what I said! They don't seem convinced.
amy is the boss. That's her job :-)
maybe if they don't want to do a guest post you should skype them and talk to them for the next podcast. this needs to be recorded some how.. it sounds like it's going to be an awesome weekend for them.
She might delegate it to you :)
already is. Did I mention meeting the mclaren test team guy and talking about the cars and team for 15 minutes or so :D
POST!
That sounds awesome!! #putitinaguestpost :)
I'm being called away to attend a meeting i didn't know about.. fun times. speak to you all later. xx
If you don't want to do your own, do a combined post. Each write a couple of bits.
hold on doesn't this stuff always happen?
This always happens to other people.
:)
i see jon killed youtube with his 800mb file ;)

looks like the internet connection in the hotel is working finally... Hello from Melborune
Hi. Having fun?
EEEEEEEEEE
I won't sleep tonight.
oh that was for http://twitpic.com/1at2h0 :D :D
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
haven't had much time for that yet :-) arrived, checked in , went to eat something only to find out both places I had in mind for tonite were closed for some functions, obviously F1 related. so ended up with quick dinner before the falling asleep at 7pm. woke up at midnight, trying to figure what time the FP1 actually starts on Fri. and that is about it so far :-)
Awesome!
WOW! You met Heikki!
life = complete. Here he is getting smiley when he saw my flag to sign instead of a picture of his face. http://twitpic.com/1at3k0
That's really awesome! Well happy for you!
I took sooo many photos today and every single one of them is of drivers, I need to find the time to upload them!
for people currently in Melbourne - I am still stuck with one spare ticket for the race that will go completely to waste if nobody uses it...
oh no!
oh yea, friend of mine canceled and my wife is here for fun, not for being tortured by loud F1 cars :-)
lunacy.
want us to tweet it for you, or are you looking for someone known?
well, I haven't tweeted it myself yet, do not want to look like ticket re-seller. thinking what is best way. not trying to make money out of it but would be nice to recover at least some of the expense for the ticket, as the complete hotel rate for 1 room for 4 nights went up in smoke already. good seat I think, brabham stand, view of first 2 corners
I doubt you'll look like a tout if you say a friend can't use a ticket you have and so there's one spare :)
there was a guy outside gate 1 today with a sign 'f1 ticket for sell'
hmmm. how much is a flight to Melbourne right now...
Afternoon guys :D today is a hugely successful day, it feels wrong that it's a Thursday!
That. is. AWESOME. Well done!
you know you want to!
where does this stand on the media|future|change front? just old media, or a new way to consume old media?
Connects to your TV antenna and to your Ethernet network router/switch to stream digital television in full HD to your Macs and PCs.
http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/tuner/netstreamdtt/product1.en.html
and that I am not going to do :-)
I got mine for 5000 HKD :-)
Erm, I don't understand what it is. If it changes the way you can consume media, and gives you more options, then it is very much MFC.
Hehehe, on Viva F1's quiz yesterday evening Jackie had a round where we had to guess the car by the diffuser. In this month's F1 Racing out today, they have a section full of diffuser pics for the different teams!
Definitely need to get into that Tardis...
you know the eyetv usb stick we have but don't use (because the mac's aren't near the ariel). well this replaces that stick.
it sits beside the ariel and streams the content via wifi. so like a singbox i guess. it's quite pricey, but it feels kinda cool.
a bit pricey. But I wouldve gone for it if there's an available plane seat. Alas, no. And given that I'm going to shanghai next month and may go to melbourne next year anyway, I'm not that desperate. :)
Ahh, that is cool. Not quite on demand enough for me, but if it means not having to have a TV I am all for it.
Also, I so need a singbox.
are you talking slingbox or am I missing something else too?
:)
sorry. slingbox.
Don't you need a playstation to play singbox? :D
ooh I could use one of those to watch telly upstairs..
I'm listening to the 15th March podcast and am shocked to hear the bloke (name?) state that the new section 3 of qually was better because we now saw all cars with the same fuel.... what! Are you serious, qually from the last few years is the best it's ever been... the new fuel rules are terrible. It added a fantastic spice to the racing with cars on different fuel strategies....
Can that person have a think again about what he said... I'm in shock!!! Whats his name?
twas i. and i stand by that. waiting hours for fuel weights was a waste of everyone's time.
and i agree with that, but it's a separate debate. nothing to do with qually.
just did. i stand by what i said.
Which Alex got a promotion, Giggles or Aus?
the big G {Comment #6}
Excellent news. Well done Giggles!
ok nice response... :) your still wrong, it's not a separate debate, qually isn't about who is the fastest car... it should be about the overall race strategy and so if Alonso in a weaker car want to low fuel to get a higher grid position they can do that, much better
I accidentally subscribed to the Money Box podcast on itunes. Is it wrong that I started listening to it and am finding it rather soothing?
It's odd that you didn't instantly delete it, full stop :D {Comment #12}
I accidentally downloaded some sort of hour-long club music radio show when it somehow landed in the ForceCast feed shortly before the Bahrain GP. It was surprisingly listenable... ...but had absolutely nothing to do with F1, let alone FIF1!
Congrats Alex :)
there's a great debate about what f1 should and shouldn't be here: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/22/f1-how-it-should-be/
very recommended reading.
You're saying qualifying isn't about the fastest car or driver? I completely disagree with that.
Mr C,
Are you aware this site had launched?
http://www.pitlanemagazine.com/magazine/ {Comment #34}
I wish I knew whether I was supposed to be writing or proofreading for it. I get radio silence when I try to communicate with them...

Originally it was going to be a PDF e-mag, but the format changed a couple of months ago. That was the last message I got from the team.

The strange thing is that they were a lot better last time than this.
Alia, I heard nothing from them until they launched, then I contacted the guy asking if he still wanted me to write for them. So I had to chase after him in other words...

I thought they were police officers at first who'd decided to go a bit more casual with the uniforms than regulations likely permitted. Which might have been a problem since I doubt any of the drivers of the vehicles they're supposed to stand in front of plan to obey the normal parkway speed limits...
Alia, I heard nothing from them until they launched, then I contacted the guy asking if he still wanted me to write for them. So I had to chase after him in other words... {Comment #245}
I was chasing him before the launch and it was no help (as I said earlier, I got radio silence when I tried contacting them). I think I will have to assume that they've got enough staff and concentrate on other stuff.
gosh, I should go to bed. I have that silly interview tomorrow, I had no time to prepare at all.
And of course I have to be fresh faced in the paddock tomorrow ;)
Jeremy is sooo excited at possibly getting to meet Lewis so he can tell him to 'go' in person.
one of the comments:

Not as "ouch" as it would have been if the commenter had remembered to capitalise Youtube (it is, after all, a proper noun).

whether the right clothes with chosen is a different matter, but its the premise that counts. {Comment #66}
It's a very good point. Unfortunately with clothes as unflattering as this, the backlash will be something fierce and the point will be lost.
Best of Luck Amy ;)
Good luck and have fun.
in fairness to albert park. they tried fosters boys one year.
that went well! {Comment #91}
So did Valencia last year (I remember Raikkonen got a "grid boy" and Peter Windsor described it as "getting the short straw"). Come to think of it, Australia's trial of grid boys was last year. We do not yet know whether Valencia will repeat the experiment.
Yay for promotions!
I have gotten mine, just waiting for the visa to make it official {Comment #120}
Congratulations, Nick!
I think the clue here is that Sauber's system does not involve modifying the 'tub', which cannot be changed after homologation. So when was that? {Comment #123}
Scrutineering on the Thursday of Bahrain.
Thanks Alia. So Pedalo either didn't know or didn't tell and Sauber have done this in less than a month? Impressive!
Nick,
funny graphic! my point about hte backpedal was that at this race the driver is now an advisor rather than a fully feldged steward. i.e. no vote on any decision. Is this a backpedal? {Comment #131}
No. The stewarding qualification system prevents a driver from being a fully-fledged steward (and always has) unless the driver has acquired the necessary experience and paperwork separately to act in that role.
Think of the driver as a replacement for Alan Donnelly without the authority he had and you'll be close to the mark.
Thanks Alia. So Pedalo either didn't know or didn't tell and Sauber have done this in less than a month? Impressive! {Comment #258}
Unless Sauber had arrived at the idea independently in pre-season and are being too modest to admit it (unlikely but theoretically possible), then yes :)
My dad is making me tea tonight. I'm now really regretting asking him as I have the chip cravings back :(
I got very confused when I saw a tweet flying around that a new issue was to be released on some such date. It looks suspiciously like a blog, and I'm not sure how you combine that with issues. {Comment #155}
You can do it extremely easily from a technical standpoint, provided your blog platform supports pre-publishing posts (neither my blog nor my wiki can do it, but they're the exceptions rather than the rule). Even if it doesn't, there's the tried-and-tested "pre-write, copy, paste, submit, rinse and repeat" method.
Quite how readers will react to this method is another matter.
Virgin is rumoured to have miscalculated the size of their fueltank.
AutoMotor und Sport has the story that it's impossible for them to make it to the finish.
That's one hell of a computer glitch. They are asking the FIA if they can make a new monocoque.
Hoorah for CFD.
there was a rumour around the the autosport awards at xmas that someone had. i'd be amazed if it's taken this long to make the request.
Hi everyone! :) i suppose i'm too late to ask the awesome lot in ausi how one earth they managed to get a brawn hoody?
Hey!
hullo :) I haven't see them about for a while so I think they're sleeping. But it's definitely worth reading through their fun in the thread
hehe i hope spa is half as fun as melbourne is turning out to be :)
:(
aren't you and nick going?
don't be sad. you're coming too. ;) just get Nick to take you.
Did I win the lottery then forget all about it?
you have to come.. please please please please.. Amy is meant to be winning the lottery soon, i'm sure she would help you out...
We'll talk about it but it's shockingly expensive!
GA tickets are a little cheaper... but yeah they are expensive :(
@Amy (for when you wake up) - can you please win the lottery soon...
I can afford the holiday or the ticket, not really both :P I could come camping with you guys I guess :D
it's about €80 for a big tent (with proper beds) for the GP weekend if we find enough people.
Do it! As far as I know, there are spaces left. Ask Kathi though!
Yeah sorry I wasn't really serious.... If I was going on holiday, a field in Belgium in the most expensive week of the year might not be my pick! :P
you should go to the italian GP... i hear Amy wants people to go. A field in italy may be slightly nicer? ;)
I'd love to go to Italy. Again it's very expensive though :( I can't really afford a big holiday this year at all.
On a separate note, where is my tea???
go to silverstone!! :P
i have a cup of tea next to me.. that's mine though :P
By this I mean a meal. Before work.... My dad's timekeeping is awful. I think I'll have to leave without it now!
Just buying my travel insurance for Belgium. £19:61 for 4 days is actually cheaper than I expected!
Oh, wait. Just seen the T&C. Might need to pay more because of my asthma. Bother!
I'm going GA if anyone wants to join me?
Clearly the best Big Pic ever: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/25/delicious/
clearly!
hehehehe
So a few weeks ago I took a course in the docklands part of town and passed a very interesting mural: 1 2 3
It's an old TV cartoon that was on when I was a kid. I know what it is, but can you guess?
No. :D
My mum does make me chuckle.
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/03/25/hard-to-imagine/
:D
Hello all, sadly it looks like the rail strike will prevent me from coming to the Sidepodmeetup. Maintenance are out from 6 - 9 April, which could mean that faults may not be rectified so cancelling services, but the problem is the Signallers who are out between 0600 to 1000 and 1800 to 2200 which will prevent me from getting home :(. I'll check at work what services we think will run but I would expect they'll keep the London to Brighton line open but not the suburban service I will need.
presumably this will effect lou and lukeh. should we reschedule?
:(
My life is ruined by trains!
when are you next in the country? spa?
evening
It's fine, really. I'll see you all at Spa anyway.
The whole reason why I am moving to Copenhagen is the crap train service. It's slower and less reliable than HRT - I didn't get home until 7pm tonight ....
ooohh!! goodness... it may do :(
hey jackie.
The problem is that I can't tell how much support they'll get and so whether this will be the first week of action or a one off. Hopefully, the RMT, TSSA and Network Rail will try to talk again before the strike goes ahead but there's a lot of bad feeling around at the moment.
Is everyone well?
Evening world
Boo :(
Hey y'all
Hello Jackie, not too bad thanks. My poorly knee is feeling a bit better. I'm out for my leaving drinks with work tomorrow so will probably be less well come qualifying ;)
The plan is to fly to Heathrow on Wed 25th Aug, stay over at Chez Bassano, drive to Spa with him and a couple of others, stay in the motorhome, drive back and fly back to Denmark on Tuesday. I have secured a berth in the luxorious and spacious motorhome, Mrs. Goat is getting me a plane ticket this week and I'll have bought my GA ticket by the end of next month...
Nope. I have a blister on the tip of my tongue and it has been driving me nuts for days. Serves me right for shoveling in food that was too hot.
Ouch!
i only need one of the main train lines to the south east.. maybe they'll make sure that will be okay... however if it's only during those times i can go up to london after 11... and go back after 10pm.. that's not a problem for me. Maybe for Lukeh though cause it's a little further away..
Hold up, there's a Sidepodmeetup? /me goes to check the wiki....
I hate that, its like when you've been to the dentist and had your teeth scaled and polished
On a more positive note it seems like I am writing Mark Hughes's column again. He has decided that we have to ban downforce because downforce ruins racing.
ummm, no. not if we can't get there.
:)
Talking of meetups, is there one planned for Goodwood FOS?
It's amazing how many different things cause pain. Touching my teeth hurts, speaking hurts, lettuce and Danish pastries are agony.
Don't kibosh my ambitions already.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
Or to the trains, whichever works best...
Thursdays are rubbish :( :(
I mean I have had a really stupid day - this is the icing on a foul cake, as a wise man once said...
I think planned is probably pushing it. One will happen there but I don't think anything close to planning has been done yet
I'll be there for a few days as well
i'm going to goodwood! it would feel wrong to miss it... specially as Jenson will be there *ehem*.
I don't mind thursdays its one day closer to the weekend and some time off work
no doubt we'll either arrange it closer to the time, or a group of us will happen to bump into each other :)
it's march!
Seeing how..."successful"... you were at getting photos of Jenson, I'd have been surprised if you couldn't make it!
:)
Lord March...
I've never been and I'd like to go, but probably just for the one day
hehehe
isn't he thr guy who does the safari park?
As far as I can tell, that's usually what happens! :)
heheheh the man followed me around goodwood i tell you.... plus i've had a conversation with him.. now.. i think i want a photo. best place to do that is Goodwood... :)
we never promised spacious :D
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Unfortunately, these are disputes that have been on the cards for some time. It's difficult to explain but there are actually 4 different disputes that the unions have co-ordinated to give the most impact.
Damnit, got it wrong again! ;)
No, it's ok - it's better this way anyway. I hope the Stansted and Gatwick Express trains aren't affected...
On a happier note, although I live in West Sussex I've only been to Goodwood once. I'd really like to go this year, a meet up would be fantastic
He is Bath not March
Lovely photo Amy got of Heikki this morning
oops!
I'm about to add myself to the meetup list in April. Now have to book time off work. Whole day?
and the next day for hangovers. we may not be able to make it though, so maybe hold fire? up to you of course. giggles etc shouldn't be affected.
I'm sure me and Giggles could drink til the hangover dawns.
What's the issue re: not able to make it?
Train strike :(
:D
I'll think about it....
will it cause probs with the tubes too out of interest?
RMT thing?!
I live out in the sticks anyway (who knows where Lowestoft is? No? Told ya!), so if I'm late I'll just bill NXEA who will probably bill Network Rail who will probably bill the RMT for the time lost.
Don't know, but can find out. Wait 5.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8586422.stm
Don't think so, just the main railways
This dispute is with Network Rail and the RMT and TSSA unions so it will not affect the tubes. BUT the RMT ballot for staff employed by London Underground closed today. If they get a mandate there will also be tube strikes at some point,
Right, I gtg. Off to the cinema to see that Jim Carrey movie. See you guys later!
Sorry, got that wrong, the deadline of today is for TFL to change their mind on staff cuts or the RMT will ballot but it could still mean tube strikes.
^^^^^^^^
What he said. Nothing on TFL's website to suggest it will impact, except the overground rail network, i.e. London Overground. Tube seems exempt from the dates.
RMT News which gives details on strike action and ballots is here.
ALISONNNN!!!!!!! - I think you may like this... - http://twitpic.com/1ava09

F-Duck. Seems like a great idea
Tweet of the week!
quick question to anyone about.. i have a university interview and this university is asking for a record of achievement.. is that like exam results? cause they are also asking for my most recent report too. (demanding stupid university course - you wouldn't believe it's for a foundation course tbh!)
Yeah, examiniation results slips, certificates, etc.
Sounds like exam results etc. You really need to get someone who is more familiar with uni forms than me like Jon or Alison but since you are looking at photography/design type stuff it might be a good idea to mention anything outside school like getting second in the design Jenson a helmet competition or any other awards. But get someone who knows what they are talking about to back this up before you do it
Falmouth, one of the leading art unis didn't want this much from me... uni of kent want sooo much.. i think everything is against me going to uni.. or at least they are determined to make it as hard for me as possible..
That's odd... for me the first requirement for all of my interviews was a record of achievement. Seems strange that falmouth wouldn't want one but university of kent might for a foundation course but I suppose that's the inconsistent nature of universities.
hey peeps!
Hiya rocket
From my experience of academics and universities they just don't want to be responsible for anything so they want you to do all this so that they can prove to their boss that they got the best people they could. Don't think they are being awkawrd to you. It is just how they are and everyone else is going through this as well.
Hiya :)
Hi
none of my friends needed any for their art courses... it makes no sense.. i'm applying for a photography degree.. not history.. they should have references etc in my ucas application :s ah well..
heya
did you get a record of achievement folder when you left school? we had this red folder which contained our exam certificates and reports etc, then it had space to add a level results and stuff
Formula One not boring, insists incredibly interesting German
Warning, mildly naughty words, but it's too funny not to post ;)
Thats what I had :)
i haven't left school yet.. i only have my exam certificates from GCSEs i'll get my Alevel certs all at once i think...luckily dad keeps all the certificates i get in a folder so they should be easy to find. I kinda wish all unis would want the same thing.. it would make having an interview each week much less stressful.
ark Hughes in his AUTOSPORT mentioned some of the fake ways people have suggested to create position changes. Apparently there are people in F1 who want to introduce something calle "right to line" where if a driver can stay within a second of the car in front for three laps the leaing driver has to move over and give him the position. That is even worse than short cuts. If they want to make changes why not ban the one move rule.
ah - are you doing you a levels at your school? we never had that facility so we were given the record of achievement folder when we left school. just your certificates and reports will be ok then i imagine
well i got my end of term report yesterday.. so i'm thinking that must be recent enough for them. I think having had negative responses from the other unis last week may have lowered my confidence a bit. i'm so nervous i feel a little ill... again. grr.
lou, is it University of Kent at Canterbury or one of the other campuses?
one of the other campuses sadly.
You really hae to try not to let it get to you. Don't be nervous about it. It will work out OK
i get really sensitive about this kinda thing though.. i shouldn't let it bother me, and sometimes i can just brush it off, but it really took alot of effort to pick up a camera the other day to try again. I need to be thicker skinned, i'll need to be okay with rejection.. i'm not going to succeed otherwise, must keep trying. :)
photography is a tough old industry and very subjective - not everyone will like your work but plenty that will - you'll need a tough skin
You will evelop a thicker skin. It is just something that happens but if you do photography professionally you can bet that some people are going to be critical of some of your work. If you are getting wound up about stuff pick up your camera and concentrate on that an you will forget about what is worrying you.
How are the smoke pics going?
i'm just about to try take some more actually. wish me luck :)
good luck :D
Goo luck. You will get there.
good luck!
I think my d key is on the way out. I keep getting missing ds
Best off to bed, 'night all. Am going to try & make one of the practice sessions tomorrow, we shall see.
lou, thinking happy thoughts for you :)
Good night
Good luck Lou!
And night everybody!
Hehehe, a Dutch friend has just told me of this about the news following Bahrain in the Netherlands
F1 was the second big topic on tonight's Dutch 8 o'clock news . Well, i say F1, i mean Michael Schumacher, they had actually send a journalist to where Schumacher was born and interviewed some die hard Schumi fans who were all watching the race in a bar. "I once had the pleasure of shaking his hand and he is actually a very normal guy!" (but in German). WTF. And nothing about Bahrein or the fact Alonso won.
:D
he's a popular guy.
lord knows why.
Must be something about the handshake
Morning all. I am awake and have finally started getting nervous about this interview :(
Hiya amy. Reading about your activities from yesterday for you was awesome! Yay for heikki and the flag!
You will be fine. Worst they can do is put you back on your old job.
Best of luck Amy, just be yourself and they'll love you :)
Where did this come from? Bernie wants a race in New York for 2012
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82366
hey amy, good luck for your interview
Bull*****. Bernie has wanted a race in New York for ages. He ain't having one. No way, no how, never.
He is just using this to pressure other races to bump up the money. Give it two or three months and he will be spinning Petrov and Lada into the 99th variation of a Russian GP to happen in three years time.
Day two. Breakfast is not as good today. Having toast at the hotel. We get to see F1 today :D
Woah! Blog update!!! Australian Grand Prix time - http://bit.ly/93YwNe
thank you for the good lucks people :D I feel hungover and I didn't drink anything yesterday. I guess standing in a line for 6 hours in 31 degree heat is sneakily dehydrating.
ooh, you need a new breakout.

i have a university interview and this university is asking for a record of achievement.. is that like exam results? {Comment #362}
My National Record of Achievement (as it's formally known) is an A4 folder with a red marbled-effect cover which I got at the end of Year 9 out of the school recycling system. There is a series of sturdy secured plastic pockets in it, which are supposed to be a list of everywhere you've worked (if relevant), a personal statement, an individual action plan, your qualification certificates, results slips (for qualifications where you don't have a certificate yet) and proof of any really unusual other things you want to use in support of your application. NCVQ issue the folders, but if you didn't receive one at school, a sturdy A4 ring-binder that closes flat and has the all or most of the above items in clean plastic pockets should suffice. Unfortunately I do not know the university well enough to say which items would definitely be safe to skip, except that the certificates are definitely going to be necessary.
In practise, I've ended up taking out most of those things to make enough space for the certificates, results slips and proof of unusual other activities. However, I leave one pocket for things relating to whatever interview is going to see the NRA and use the inside back cover pocket for multiple copies of CVs. It is surprising how many employers find the NRA a surprising thing to see with an applicant considering that the scheme has been going since at least 1999 and was designed for the benefit of employers as well as academia.
Has anyone mentioned Sauber's F duct?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82346
i'm so dumb, i hadn't connected pdlr. he probably single-handedly developed mclaren's.
That's odd... for me the first requirement for all of my interviews was a record of achievement. Seems strange that falmouth wouldn't want one but university of kent might for a foundation course but I suppose that's the inconsistent nature of universities. {Comment #366}
Not every academic establishment expects a Record of Achievement specifically because some are used to dealing with students above the age of about 27 (who won't have one - at least not one in that scheme - and might be confused by mention of one) and some simply ask for the information that might be found in a Record of Achievement directly without worrying overmuch about the format.
I just can't figure out how th driver is meant to work it unless he sticks his hand out of the cockpit.
oooopppss!! wrong thread! soorryy!!
*runs away from mr and mrs c* sorry!
my guess... the knee thing is bunkum. could a flap be forced open when under a certain amount of pressure / at a certain speed?
whitmarsh was way too open about the knee thing, and it would explain why it isn't driver assisted aero.
Where did this come from? Bernie wants a race in New York for 2012 {Comment #402}
He's wanted one for at least 10 years. There is quite a difference between wanting and having.
:D
i'm recording it
chases....
We will be there next week!
That would be a moveable aero device and definitely illegal.
We are talking about Blabbermarsh. The man can't keep a secret
ahh. bugger.
if anyone knows how it works, it'll be pdlr. i can't be a coincidence that the poorest team on the grid are the first to follow up on this device.
i totally agree - they had this lined up and waited for mclaren to test the water with it
I still can't see how the Sauber system can work. The driver sticking his arm out without the duct would probably stall the wing. My instant reaction is the duct is as bogus as their testing pace.
Hold on, hold on. I agree with most things you said, but poorest?!
could also be that.
we'll be watching the one we saw this time next week ;)
...least sponsored? did mean it like that, just mean "no-where near the top".
Oops, that makes more sense
#tiredlukeh
nowhere near the top?!! We just had one bad race.
Evening everyone :)
hey alex.
just popping in quickly to say hello.
evening
true. but last year mclaren hauled a poor car to the front of the grid. bmw sauber didn't develop much at all.
i can't see how they'd be leading an aero device arms race, over say ferrari / newey / williams / mercedes.
If anyone spots me tomorrow morning remind me to open the pole poll to votes.
I think Im going to be late. Not a good start.
you around for fp1/2?
I would ask when it is but I'll check the post. Don't want to open the bst thing again :)
hehehe.
we're sticking with BST now, cause i'm not wasting 16hrs of work over nothing :)
I am going to cry. Where is a tram when you need one! I am meant to be there now :(
Hello. How's the extra arm working out?
i'm sure it will be okay. Have you rung them to explain that you will be late?
Right must dash.
Don't stay up too late and get sick Mr C!
:)
bye
I am on the tram! Need to make 2 stops in 2 minutes
on the busiest weekend of the year?
Sitting at a coffee shop. Where are the real fans? These people know nothing!
:D
Maybe I should not be listening in :-)
I'm gonna head off, have to get up for work anyways so I'll be up for FP2. See you guys then, enjoy FP1 :)
Night Lukeh
night lukeh
night!
night chap.
i ought to stop drinking. christine's left me in charge of the FBFB.
Drunk FBF would be interesting
i can't type at the best of times.
no no... keep drinking.. it could turn the FBFB up to 11 ;)
I like Lou being a bad infulence. Bassano would be so proud.
:)
Danni is on the ball. I hate waiting in queues
i've been spending far too much time with Emily lol :D
oops sorryt wrong thread! *runs*
hehehehehe *offers hiding place* ;)
:D
thanks;)
Way to get special treatment: have kids. With you
huh?
*hi scarbs* (again)
Sauber: one idea how their sidepod mounted version of McLarens F-duct might work.
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/sauber-f-duct-detail/
He is putting up more posts than Christine this week
"This could be done purely by the airflow being overcome by the drag creating inside the tortuous duct and hence cutting off the flow above a certain airspeed."
that was kinda what i meant, although clearly i have no idea what i'm talking about :)
In effect it is using the corners in its path as a flap or throttle.
The FIA need to put a stop to this nonsense. Putting all that weight in the nose is ridiculous and makes any impact from the nose into another car a lot worse than otherwise.
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/front-wing-ballast/
agreed. i thought the fuel tank was meant to cancel the need this year?
I don't think the fuel tank affects it but the narrower tyres mean that they need to move a lot less weight forward.
but rubens says they suck: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82350
"I can only say from what I saw inside, which is that it's very dodgy to follow a car because you don't have front tyres capable of maintaining the car on the road."
Evening SPC =)
hey jim. you still blocked at work?
Ooh i did not enjoy that! a dew of my answers were goodb some were awful. Oh well, off to the track now!
Yea, looks to stay that way too. Our facility became secure this week and I cant bring my phone or laptop in either =/
i would dearly love to stay up and watch FP1 with you guys but I have an unwell little boy who needs my full attention when he wakes up in the morning - and I can't do that on a few hours sleep - must go to bed :)
night rocket. if you wake up early, we'll be here.
forget about it and have a good day :)
I cant even surf other F1 sites either. Just work stuff unfortunately.
Someone mentioned that in AUTOSPORT. Maybe it was in my column. Sorry Mark Hughes's column. The difference in contact patch is not that much but the drivers will feel any difference.
night!!
thanks ;)
Hi Jim
Night RR =)
Heya Steven
I'm debating what to do about FP1 &2.. i have a really busy day tomorrow with x2 birthday meals to go to and a uni interview. I think i may try and wake up for FP2 and then stay up from 5 (or whenever it starts).. rather than sleeping now, watching FP1 and then only getting a few hours sleep until FP2.... although i suppose that may mean i miss Ant... hmmmm...
:)
That was a quick interview. Everyone gives some dodgy answers at interviews
I totally spaced. practice is today huh? Man, I'm very out of the loop.
Ping!
Evening all
Good night
I read after I got off work and saw that sauber has the snorkle now too. Maybe it'll give them the speed we thought they had during pre-season testing.
Your uni interview is the most important thing so you have to work round that
Hello
It's a bit different. Scarbs has two articles on it
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/
sir
I have a confession to make, I think boring F1 is all my fault :(
Scoping now
The last question in my interview was "what is the best corner to get a good view of the cars?"
For the last two races I have been out of the country and they have both been boring as hell!
Travelling is bad for F1
I'm thinking sleep, then wake up for FP2.. so i can finish off preparing all this lot. night all see you at 5:30! I hope you manage to get a 5live shout out ;) xx
you suggested they ban pitstops?
ooh, are we doing shoutouts? we should, i forgot last race.
Technically, Pitstops aren't banned
#pedantic
Bassano is the reason cars cant overtake? =(
I really am a bad influence :)
claire is on a twitpiccing mission: http://twitter.com/ClaireVWilliams/
I knew that stuff about "dirty air" was rubbish!
You created a good impression or they wouldn't have asked that
they may as well be for all the frikin use they are :)
Is it a good idea to say that if you want people to go to Spa?
Good night then
The tyres would be in a right ol' state if they weren't allowed
Rubens had a good point today during a Q&A. He said that perhaps a mandatory number of laps should be done on some tires.
worked in '05.
...cept for schumi.
You need to get the drivers drunk just before the race
I'm trying out the twitter photos only app Photo Nest for this reason
Seems ok so far
I'm hoping if I'm at the race itself, the effects will cancel out
Who knows what'll happen
Please no. That is too fake.
No more conditions!
It'd cause mismatches though. Mismatches are what creates overtaking.
You almost need something though. The way Q3 is, the fastest cars are almost going to be in a row from fastest to slowest on the front portion of the grid.
didn't realise louise was still doing trackside tv this year:
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13247352
She'd make a fine apprentice :)
Is the selection of Tom Kristensen as a race steward a stroke of brilliance? Is this Todt trying to diversify F1s ranks?
I think it is fantastic.
She went to work with someone else, didn't she?
did the interviews for the trackside jumborons last year. assumed it was a one year deal.
*jumbotrons
That's a new one on me: Moguls?
Still evades me
giant tv's. like in times square etc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JumboTron
Yea, they have them in major sports arenas in the USA
Silly name
Sounds like an epic sequel with Jeff Bridges
Didn't realise that. That should be interesting and make Gavin happy
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/25/25-mar-10-sauber-test-out-mclaren-like-duct-system/
I like the idea of having the FIA recognize that top drivers from different series can be considered equals. I don't know if this IS Todt's work, but the other guy never thought of this in how many years.
Add to Todt's record (I am just going through the day's F1 news), Parc Fermé is no longer a closed car-park. Teams cover and seal their cars and a web-cam will be used to monitor car access in the team's garage. Is this not bloody brilliant?
oops
That is because there are more cars this year and not enough garage space to lock the cars away
http://twitpic.com/1awrlz
Williams folks drink Diet Coke on the track? I couldn't even think about having a soft drink on a track day, only water.
Not to mention the bottles of VB on the bottom shelf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VB-stubbie.jpg
LOL, thx for the link, I wouldn't have known what a VB was =) Never seen it before.
No wonder why Williams are middle pack cars, they have a fridge full of garbage! It had nothing to do with losing Adrian Newey, I blame Diet Coke!!!
You're not missing much
[Don't tell Melbourne I said that]
lol! I drink cheap beer most of the time. Bud Light and what not. I'm a cheap date. I do, however, enjoy Guinness whenever I can find a pub that doesn't charge 7 bucks a pint.
That is the downside to drinking Guinness outside of Europe
I was pleasantly surprised to see it priced roughly the same as other beers in South Africa
Back to Friday's thread, I think
Rubens had a good point today during a Q&A. He said that perhaps a mandatory number of laps should be done on some tires. {Comment #521}
It's the strategy restrictions that are causing everyone to copy each other. If any more restrictions are imposed, they might as well say all lower-numbered drivers in teams must stop on lap X and all higher-numbered drivers in teams must stop on lap X+1...
