Qualifying is over, and it's safe to say we're all blown away by how dominant Brawn GP really were. At no point did it look like they would be anywhere else but the front row, and it turns out they locked it out. Roll on the race! Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • The likelihood of Brawn GP turning into Virgin Racing. Branson has turned up in Melbourne and has already hogged a lot of the spotlight, and celebrated the glory of their first pole position. I don't know why he didn't just buy the team if he wanted to get involved this badly, but for now the extent of their partnership remains unspecified.
  • FOM have signed a deal with Universal to start up some concerts called "F1 Rocks." I do not understand the concept behind this, or what it's got to do with F1, and would seem to be to be diversifying the brand a bit much. But, Bernie says he's a big music fan, so why not?
  • The diffuser debate will be settled on 14th April, now that a date has been set for the hearing. The ICA will have to ponder the evidence from the complaining teams, and the defence from the three in the dock. It hasn't overshadowed the racing yet, but if Brawn GP hold on to their good form, it could take a turn for the worse.

That'll do it for now. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm exhausted. Hopefully, we can rest up and get prepared for the race tomorrow, but until then, I'll see you in the comments.

It's 7:45am, I've had 3 hours sleep, the team I love have just got their first pole, and a 1-2 in their first race and I've never felt more awake in many, many months. Welcome back Formula 1. :)

Asides from qualifying though I do have a few concerns about Branson's takeover... I'm not a fan of the man whatsoever and it does worry me just how much he's going to put the Virgin brand into the team. I welcome the money and the investment for sure but it'd just be a shame if he put his self promotion over this team who are obviously going to be opening plenty of eyes this year.

    Thanks, Christine!

If Brawn pull [off] the impossible this season, can we honestly call him the best F1 engineering mind since Colin Chapman?

I already think he is, but yeah, absolutely.

yay Jenson's design a helmet competition is back. Some details as listed on Jenson's site

"The winning design will be worn by Jenson at Silverstone. You and a friend will not only receive weekend grand stand tickets to the 2009 British Grand Prix to watch Jenson race in the helmet, but will also meet him, have a tour of the F1 paddock and the Brawn GP's garage. The helmet will then be auctioned to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. All you have to do is design a helmet with a UK theme and the winner will be chosen by Jenson himself.

The competition starts on Monday 30th of March and will run until the 15th of May."

i wonder how many i can enter....

I think it's a bit soon to be writing off Fisi and Bourdais, although I was surprised at Bourdais and impressed with Buemi.

I'm glad that Eddie thinks KERS is a waste, the popular opinion seems to be that it's good. Maybe that'll change. Although, maybe KERS will be good in the race too.

The thing KERS was designed for is to help drivers overtake, and we won't see any of that till the race, so if all 7 cars running KERS end up being the only cars that can overtake during the race then KERS has done what it was designed for. Hopefully it won't work though, from an enviromental point have all those batteries used for one or two race weekends before being replaced is just so bad.

    Views on the Beeb coverage...

I so preferred the Jake, DC and Eddie show to the awful Steve... although Eddie mentioned Bernie to much and had some cringy comments about young girls following Lewis...

Not sure about Legard though but you have the Red button choice which is great.... they are also re running at the mo on the red button so it's terrific...

I like Button's new helmet if I'm honest.

I'm not even going to discuss what Mr C has linked.

  • Joe28/03/2009 at 08:24

I like Button’s new helmet if I’m honest.

I might like it more if both him and Rubens didn't have the same basic helmet design, annoying.

you know my only thought? thank god it’s not yellow.

oh.... well have a go at his helmet comp for silverstone and then he may have a non yellow helmet ;) but yeah.. i really don't like it. I'm starting to feel very apprehensive about Virgin sponsoring Brawn.

Thanks :-) but frankly speaking, towards the end of the qualifying when the sun was so low, I could see nothing at all through the lense ... so all these late quali photos are just pure luck. I really do not understand how the drivers manage to race in those conditions.

I was walking back around 6:30 pm on the sidewalk, it was type of shadow and sunlight shadow and sunlight mix, something like Albert Park track offers. Sunglasses on but still half blind ... There can be some mess in the later stages of the race tomorrow ...

I said a few days back I think, how I'm sure Max or Bernie said soemtime last year how they wanted to see the team use the rules to be innovative with the cars. if the teams get penalised for this it'd just be absurd personally but what can you do. :/

Me too. The three-headed interviewing technique worked well (except for the Branson one, where Coulthard couldn't get a word in edgeways!) They all seem to have complementary ways of viewing F1 and none of them let the side down.

Deft curbing of Richard Branson's enthusiasm, too...

To answer Lukeh's original question, when was the last non-Ferrari, McLaren, BMW and Renault top 3 of qualifying. I take you back to the French Grand Prix in 1999. With Rubens Barrichello (Stewart) on pole, followed by Jean Alesi (Sauber) and Olivier Panis (Prost)

Coulthard was 4th and Hakkinen 14th. Michael Schumacher 6th and Eddie Irvine 17th. Of course Renault or BMW did not exist at this point, not even as engine suppliers with Williams.

My local radio station's presenter just dropped a bit of a clanger. He said that Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for a better qualifying session later today than he had in practise and that Jenson Button has come third in all the sessions so far.

I wonder how many texts the radio station will receive as a result of this?

  • Joe28/03/2009 at 09:18

I have another job for you RG, or anyone else that so wishes. When was the last time that a manufacturer was lapped by a team with customer engines from the works team? If that even happened at some point.

I have another job for you RG, or anyone else that so wishes. When was the last time that a manufacturer was lapped by a team with customer engines from the works team? If that even happened at some point.

Didn't this happen at Monza last year? With Vettel lapping Ferraris?

  • Lukeh28/03/2009 at 09:19

Also, another thing with Lewis starting in last now, if his car is truely off the pace then surely there are quite large chances of the subvteam mercedes (so to speak) engine overlapping the main mercedes team. of course this is if Brawn continue this spectacular pace and Mclaren don't pick it up at all but it's just another strange little thing with how all this new regulations have shaken things about a bit.

  • RG28/03/2009 at 09:29

A clever thought, but do you know when Massa's engine went kaput in Hungary, could it be possible that Fisi or Sutil could have lapped him since he was still classified?

  • Dom28/03/2009 at 09:31

Ooh, I guess it could be a Williams lapping a Toyota too.

    Spain '08.

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 09:34

    Alia do we think this weekend’s result is subject to the appeal? {Comment #50}

In theory, yes. In practise, precedent suggests that the results will be allowed to stand unless it can be showed that the three teams deliberately broke the regulations. It would be fairly difficult to do this since there are three teams who have done this - if any breach of regulations is found, it would take a more complicated conspiracy theory to suggest that the three all happened to find the same loophole to exploit in three subtly different ways than Max Mosley is capable of concocting.

So I wouldn't worry about Australia or Malaysia. It's what happens afterwards that's going to be affected - the FIA are feeling bruised after their altercation with FOTA over the championship awarding method and will want to demonstrate that they can still throw around power with the best psuedopoliticians.

  • Dom28/03/2009 at 09:36

Ooh, I guess it could be a Williams lapping a Toyota too.

Think Turkey '08 was the last time. Still, this would be far more impressive! :D

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 09:36

    if the teams get penalised for this it’d just be absurd personally {Comment #51}

Of course it would - but these days, absurd seems to be the FIA's stock in trade :(

  • Journeyer28/03/2009 at 09:38

So I wouldn’t worry about Australia or Malaysia. It’s what happens afterwards that’s going to be affected - the FIA are feeling bruised after their altercation with FOTA over the championship awarding method and will want to demonstrate that they can still throw around power with the best psuedopoliticians.

If we're looking at it from that angle, who would they rather punish? The side with the FOTA Chairman (who'll stay in F1 anyway whatever happens)? Or the side with the FOTA Vice-Chairman (whose team may decide to withdraw from the sport if they're not successful) and the FOTA TWG lead (whose team is the Cinderella story of the year)?

That angle made the chances of a winning appeal look even more unlikely.

It's centred around trademarks apparently and that I 'could confuse members of the public'

    Yeah, stupid ones at that!

  • Scott in Italy (what off season?)28/03/2009 at 09:46

any references? seems a little drastic. can you just call them the “other Toro Rosso”?

that was to Dank. forgot to copy the quote...

  • Journeyer28/03/2009 at 09:47

It’s centred around trademarks apparently and that I ‘could confuse members of the public’

Then why don't you have a disclaimer stating that you're not Red Bull in any shape or form? Would that satisfy them?

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 10:00

Then why don’t you have a disclaimer stating that you’re not Red Bull in any shape or form? Would that satisfy them?

They've given me a three page document full of big words which I'm trying to get my head around. Crux of the matter is, they are allowing me to keep the domain name because of the 'positive nature of the website' but then there's a grey area about not using their logo(s) - pretty difficult I'd imagine seeing as it's all about er, Red Bull?!! :-D

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 10:02

    A clever thought, but do you know when Massa’s engine went kaput in Hungary, could it be possible that Fisi or Sutil could have lapped him since he was still classified? {Comment #80}

Expanding on that theme, Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India-Ferrari and both STR-Ferraris were the best part of 4 laps ahead of Kimi Raikkonen n Singapore 2008. Admittedly Kimi's Ferrari had been in the wall for those four laps, but he was still classified under the 90% rule.

Before that, both Toro Rosso drivers finished two laps (and Adrian Sutil one lap) ahead of Raikkonen at Spa 2008 for much the same reason. Also, Fisichella finished two laps ahead of Massa in Hungary 2008 because the latter's engine exploded.

The last time a customer car driver finished a lap up on the a member of the works team where both saw the chequered flag was Silverstone 2008. Sebastién Bourdais finished a lap ahead of Felipe Massa. Which will cheer up Christine no end :)

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 10:06

    If we’re looking at it from that angle, who would they rather punish? {Comment #85}

Unless something changes in the interim, the Cinderella story. Never mind that it makes them look evil, it also makes them look powerful. The FIA, at this time, appears to prefer looking powerful and evil than powerless and good. The latter has less psychological security for an organisation which is feeling vulnerable.

Besides, the FIA knows it can get Ferrari back easily enough without needing to wave sticks unnecessarily. Just get Bernie to be nice to Ferrari, if they want a solution the other teams might swallow.

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 10:10

Excitedly, I received a letter stamped with the Red Bull logo on it this morning.

    And then my excitement turned to dismay. It’s a legal letter asking me to remove any references to Red Bull, their logos etc from my blog. {Comment #86}

Is that even a legal letter for them to send? OK, I can understand the request to drop logos etc because there'd be copyright on them, but non-excessive use of the name Red Bull in relation to a bona fide Red Bull activity cannot be banned, at least under UK or US law.

Red Bull's withdrawal from good F1 PR continues...

    It’s centred around trademarks apparently and that I ‘could confuse members of the public’ {Comment #95}

?!? I'm confused as to how anyone could be confused about The Red Bullog having nothing to do with Red Bull Racing. Either the lawyers Red Bull employ are much stupider than the intelligence level I have been led to believe lawyers generally have or Red Bull's got completely confused about its corporate identity. Either way, suing Dank will not solve their problem!

I will say one thing about Jenson. Did you notice instead of putting one finger up when celebrating in the car and pointing, he put two up. Do you think that's kind of a "gesture" to all those who thought he was finished? Kind of like "Up yours! Look what I just did! I'm back, baby!" :D

    Heaviest - Heidfeld - BMW Sauber - 691.5kg

  • Kathi28/03/2009 at 12:54

    Really?

  • Flibster28/03/2009 at 12:55

ah yes but Heidfeld was heavier to start of with because of KERS

    eh?

They would have removed the 30kg KERS decive weight from the ballast. A car with KERS isn't going to be heavier than a car without KERS when dry.

Unless the car is so badly designed that it's really close to the 605kg weight limit.

    ;)

  • Alianora La Canta28/03/2009 at 12:58

Nakajima's got the lightest car, according to the FIA document. But I don't believe that he could really have only 612.7kg of weight in his car. If he does, then extrapolating from Kubica's weight, he'd have between minus 11 and minus 6 laps.

More likely, there's a typo in the document.

The heaviest of all is Piquet Jr, who's doing between 37 and 40 laps on his first stint.

  • Flibster28/03/2009 at 12:59

i think there is too minimum weights, for kers and unkers cars

    It's 605kg - thats it.

BMW and Webber want the weight limit raised - personally I'd rather see it dropped to 500kg - so being overweight could have with it a real penalty.

When you see them removing the front splitter with bottle jacks and it taking 2 people to lift it onto a trolley to move it, you know somethign is wrong with the rules.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2009 at 13:01

    It’s 605kg - thats it.

hmm, ok then. well it dosent seem to be helping anny teams to be fair, the kers cars as a whole didnt do great

    Goody.

Are you kidding? Why? Aww Dank, that's terrible man! Can't they cooperate with you?

I thought Red Bull were one of the cooler teams in the paddock that were more fan-friendly. Then you get this letter and that makes them just as greedy and exclusive as the rest of the teams. Just as I was warming up to them too.

This, here, is exactly what's wrong with F1. There's no way that USF1 are gonna come in and change that :-(

That's my point. Dank runs a very good FAN blog that's an excellent source of Red Bull news and really celebrates them and their cause.

Dank, take down the blog and replace it with a scanned copy of the letter. Then let us post our comments unmoderated and see what they think then...

but even when i stayed up for 24hours in order to get my textiles done i was unable to get to sleep during the day.... i'm strange i suppose.

I did that once, eventually went asleep at 5 in the morning (I was on holiday and the flight home was at 9, but my mam likes to get us up early, then the flight was delayed for quite a bit so we got home at 4) and I still woke up at 11.

I didn't hear my alarm after sleeping for a decent amount of time. Need some contraption that will pour water over me.

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 15:41

You're in the better position because you can go to be early-ish and get a good sleep. On the other hand maybe I won't need as much.

    Which strategy is the best?

I can't even work out if I'm tired or not anymore. Stayed up for FP1 followed by 4 hours sleep, then got another 4 or 5 before qualifying and I've not been to bed since. Can't decide whether to go to bed early and get up for the race or get some wine in and stay awake til after the race.

  • lou (♥ brawngp)28/03/2009 at 15:41

    That’s crazy… I don’t think I’ve ever stayed up that long.

i tend to stay up for ages if i get in a creative mood during the hols. it's only when i stop working that i notice how tired i am, i'll then spend a day shivering, sleeping and looking rather ill.

  • lou (♥ brawngp)28/03/2009 at 15:42

Nice. Noticed that BMW have got something new on the front wing, go-gp.org. Is that similar to gomotorsport.com?

The Gauteng provnce will partner the BMW Sauber F1 team as well as various other BMW motorsport facets in a deal announced in Midrand this morning.

The crux of the deal revolves around BMW F1 in the 2009/10 FIA Formula One World Championship where the go-gp.org logo will travel the globe with the team as an invitation to the world learn more about and visit the South Africa richest Gauteng Province.

The go-gp.org website acts as portal for grand prix fans, tourists and investors to access the province’s exciting offerings and at the same time become part of a new international Grand Prix Membership Club.

The deal will see go-gp.org logos boldly displayed not only on the front wing endplates and on the nose section of the BMW F1.09, but also on the drivers’ helmets and overalls, team clothing, pit equipment and team trucks and on several other BMW motorsport teams and events.

  • LadySnowcat28/03/2009 at 15:58

Yes it certainly looks like it...

Unfortunately comes across as small minded though... they should have let be unless they were prepared to see it through....

i don't think he meant sabine.

  • chris evans28/03/2009 at 20:32

Is it odd that being able to drive a transit van around the Nordschleife in 10 minutes makes her more attractive?

Not much more, but a little bit.

To be fair, under trademark law, they have to do this sort of stuff to actively protect their brand, or risk losing the mark (see Psion and Netbook).

I'd be interested in the terms they want to impose - there may be room for some compromise.

    Re: The Red Bullog

I put my hands up and admit I perhaps should have stated that the blog was unofficial. Fair-dos I guess. But the bits that really peeved me off the patronising tone of it all. Suggesting that visitors would be confused as to whether it was written by Red Bull themselves and that as a special reward for my free PR work for them they'll let me keep the domain name in this instance really annoyed me.

Do RBR have a fanclub? No. Is there an abundance of RBR only websites out there? Not really. Was I making any money from it? No.

Why the bobbins should I waste my time promoting them when some overzealous legal bod with too much time on his hands sends fires off a warning shot?

This doesn't change my view of Red Bull Racing though and I'll continue to support them. I will be sending an equally patronising letter back along with this T&C form they want me to sign though.

oh yeah speaking of which.... i need tro set mine for what time? i'm confused again..

  • chris evans28/03/2009 at 21:04

    Can’t drink it.

At last, someone else. I thought I was the only one.

  • Ollie28/03/2009 at 21:04

    Can’t drink it.

Seriously? I feel for you. No wonder you all for the unnamed energy drink.

  • RG28/03/2009 at 21:04

See ya later Joe (in a reference to earlier)

I said all that at 9am? Blimey.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2009 at 21:04

oh yeah speaking of which…. i need tro set mine for what time? i’m confused again..

well you need to put the clock an hour forward before you set it. The race starts at 7am British Summer Time.

  • lou (♥ brawngp)28/03/2009 at 21:04

    Can’t drink it.

    tea?....

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 21:04

    Can’t drink it.

Can't drink instant. Can do the coffee shop stuff. Mixed feelings on the long drawn out process of doing that at home which is why I don't.

  • Jackie28/03/2009 at 21:05

    Can’t drink it.

never tried it, the smell alone is enough to put me off

  • chris evans28/03/2009 at 21:05

oh yeah speaking of which…. i need tro set mine for what time? i’m confused again..

That is a very good question. I'm not entirely sure if my phone will change the time by itself so I might have to set two alarms to be on the safe side.

  • Lukeh28/03/2009 at 21:05

oh yeah speaking of which…. i need tro set mine for what time? i’m confused again..

change your alarm's clock time an hour forward before you go to sleep, then set your actual alarm to when the f1 show starts, 6am as normal.

  • RG28/03/2009 at 21:05

At last, someone else. I thought I was the only one.

    Same here, horrible, horrible stuff.

  • Ollie28/03/2009 at 21:05

Nooo! I thought us F1 site owners lived off the stuff. Just me then, I guess.

so... the coverage starts at 6? so does that mean i need to set it fo 5? or 6?

  • lou (♥ brawngp)28/03/2009 at 21:06

change your alarm’s clock time an hour forward before you go to sleep, then set your actual alarm to when the f1 show starts, 6am as normal.

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 21:07

Dank, what was in the T&C, and what didn’t you like about it? Would you have lost complete control of the content or something?

I had to add either 'unauthorised' or 'unofficial' in the top section of the blog - fine.

I am no longer allowed to use any pictures that show the Red Bull logo. Even bloody pictures of the logo present on the cars. Pictures I have obtained through acceptance by being provided logins to the official Red Bull media section/GEPA by, er... Red Bull themselves. Reason? Due to the name of the blog, which might cause (and today's most used phrased) 'confusion'.

I would agree to at any time, the domain name and its contents being scrutinised/removed if they felt they were defamatory.

  • Ollie28/03/2009 at 21:08

I’m a bit confused now .. we talking coffee or the un-named energy drink?

I mainly drink coffee, but do occasionally dabble in the old unnamed stuff. Coffee was the point of my comment. Christine said she cannot drink coffee, I believe.

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 21:08

You made the right call. They aren't trying to bring you on board, they want to shut you down anyway.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2009 at 21:11

You made the right call. They aren’t trying to bring you on board, they want to shut you down anyway.

First request is reasonable, second one less so - but the crucial thing here is the name of the blog. If you change the name, that would probably be enough. Then link the old domain to the new one. Job done.

  • Ollie28/03/2009 at 21:23

I wouldn’t. Send it second class.

To be fair, we are talking about 30p or whatever it is for a stamp these days. I'm just saying that the company I work for will pay on behalf to receive the very odd letter that falls short of total delivery charge.

the cost to the company is the difference in the price paid to the actual cost plust £1 handling fee.

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2009 at 21:25

That’s gonna hurt so much more. No stamp just shows you aren’t bothered. A second class stamp means you put extra effort into not being bothered.

    Exactly.

That’s gonna hurt so much more. No stamp just shows you aren’t bothered. A second class stamp means you put extra effort into not being bothered.

    I'll send it second class.

Or, if I was particularly spiteful I might do my 'fax trick'. What's this I hear you ask?

Get four pieces of A4 paper. Write your letter on one and colour the other three in black. Attach all four in a loop with sellotape and send.

    Fax toners are expensive things...

  • Flibster28/03/2009 at 21:27

Thinking about it a bit more: I wouldn't sign the agreement.

I'd take down the blog and as they obviously don't like the domain be using with their images, just put a page with the letter scanned on it and an image of another team with something like Red Bull don't want your support - give it to someone who deserves it.

Then write quite a sarcastic letter and send it and the unsigned agreement back to them.

But I'd take it quite personally. ;)

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 21:27

Oh and thanks for the congrats messages :-)

  • Ollie28/03/2009 at 21:28

the cost to the company is the difference in the price paid to the actual cost plust £1 handling fee.

For a company even as small as the one I work for, it doesn't make a jot. I'm not saying Red Bull would accept it, but just saying they probably would. And as it was a point in Dank's grrr-ness, then stuff them and make them pay. Or plead ignorance. At the end of the day, the choice is Dank's.

  • chris evans28/03/2009 at 21:28

  • Flibster28/03/2009 at 21:28

Mine is a laser fax and is refillable. Costs about £30 for enough toner to refil it 4 times.

Get four pieces of A4 paper. Write your letter on one and colour the other three in black. Attach all four in a loop with sellotape and send.

Sweet. Sellotape is king, looping it is master of all.

  • RG28/03/2009 at 21:29

But I’d take it quite personally. ;)

I'd have an image of Webber saying 'I bet he is nice'

Then one of Vettel going 'And so is he'

Then one of Horner and Newey 'Like these guys'

And finally some Red Bull lawyers 'But these are evil, horrible men. Go to Williams you horror's.'

  • RG28/03/2009 at 21:30

Not that of course I have done anything like that before.

It's the sort of thing you should only do once. Like changing someone's facebok status when they have been silly enough to leave themselves logged in to a public terminal.

It’s the sort of thing you should only do once. Like changing someone’s facebok status when they have been silly enough to leave themselves logged in to a public terminal.

In my flat that is a regular occurrence. We are all quickly learning the merits of the 'sign out' button.

This one was posting that the person was finally glad to be coming out after so long. He was getting comments and text messages congratulating him. He should know better than to leave himself logged in again now this has happened twice :)

Our favourite is to leave their status as it is, but add something like "and is gay" to the end of it. That way they are less likely to notice.

Interesting quote from the qualifying report on F1.com

Massa said he could not feel satisfied with seventh place, having aspired to fifth, but that it was the best he could wring from his F60.

So Ferrari never expected to make the front two rows?

  • RG28/03/2009 at 21:54

So Ferrari never expected to make the front two rows?

Probably going for realistic expectations then, they understand they aren't good so setting targets they can reach. Which they failed to do.

  • Dom28/03/2009 at 21:54

So Ferrari never expected to make the front two rows?

He said all along they weren't as fast as Brawn, but not sure who else they expected to start behind?

  • Andy Taylor28/03/2009 at 21:56

I guess so? I wonder how Racing Bulls are allowed to use the logo? Not that I’m wanting to stir trouble, I guess it’s because Ian knows the RBR web people?

LPG suggests you speak to RBR's PR people - after all they have given you access to their media. She also thinks that the lawyers may think you're more than an individual fan and out for commercial gain.

Staying up for a while yet. Probably go for 4 or 5 hours - if I can sleep!

Love the late morning nap I had earlier. Spanish style siesta. I like their thinking.

  • RG28/03/2009 at 22:52

    Right. The plan.

Alarm A - Mobile, setting off at 5am whoknowswhat, Sweet Home Alabama (Dunno if it auto changes the time, so I could find myself with two hours to kill)

Alarm B - iPod, setting off at same time, Welcome to the Jungle at full volume. If that doesn't work, then nothing will.

Yeah, i still haven't decided yet. Theres plus's to both courses/places, but id be surprised if im not a brookes, and hey, i can't say no to being in Oxford...i love it!!

Shamelessly stolen from the Autosport forum:

ours stands up pretty well methinks.

I wonder what the “further announcements” will be though?

Branson is buying the team. Seems obvious.

Whatever happened to the simple montage of f1 cars at speed, drivers, crashes, and pretty women?

  • Steven Roy28/03/2009 at 23:12

Discovery’s safely down at Kennedy Forgot to tune in though.

I managed to catch the last couple of minutes of the descent. The first window was lost to weather but they landed perfectly on the next orbit.

Right, I've got my alarms sorted. Everything is in tip top condition, this leads me to say good night and see you for some racing in the morning.

If my alarms are kind of me of course. Bet they are too loud this time.

  • Steven Roy28/03/2009 at 23:15

Thats awesome!!! I may see you there, i’ve been accepted there to do Business

So does that make it the official sidepoduni

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 23:16

Completely off the F1 grid for a brief moment. I want this to become embedded in your craniums for all eternity.

    Blurby bit:

    The tropical Isle of Wight

It's easy to mock an attempt to bring Caribbean cred to the Isle of Wight tourist trade by making a reggae song about it. It's a demented idea and we laugh derisively. On the other hand, it has actually made us want to go see the place. Looks nice.

please tell me we're not talking about the song thats on all wtcc feeds whilst waiting for it to start?!?!

  • me28/03/2009 at 23:31

so, i've watched the kimi onboard that kathi posted a couple of times now (well about 15 to be precise):

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/kimis-q2lap-with-kers-graphic-mpg

and i cannot fathom the kers graphics? have taken a couple of screenshots of it in action:

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/f1-kers-graphic-1-png

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/f1-kers-graphic-2-png

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/f1-kers-graphic-3-png

but i've no idea what it's telling me at any stage??

also the recovery doesn't seem in sync with the braking zones and the delivery doesn't seem to tie up with any button pushing.

    is it all just fantasy?

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 23:31

Yes. Annoying catchy europop. Won't leave your brain once it's in. A true earworm. Not on YouTube,

    Pic 1 - two-thirds full

    Pic 2 - being used

    Pic 3 - empty

I was confused as to why it didn't top up under breaking. But when Kimi started a new lap it was full up again?

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 23:37

aaah no, its started in my head again!!! NOOOOOOO!

    Sorry :-)

The one thing I like about it is the seamless transition from intro graphics to track guide. Also I secretly like the song but shhh.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2009 at 23:38

I was confused as to why it didn’t top up under breaking. But when Kimi started a new lap it was full up again?

it gets topped up each time he brakes....but if he could use that then he'd always have lots to use....if he only gets 6.whatever sections a lap then it makes it fairer...so he has a full kers tank when he croses the line, he's just only allowed to use it then

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2009 at 23:38

Also I secretly like the song but shhh.

    *faints*

  • Pat W28/03/2009 at 23:38

it’s the one with him walking down the pitlane saying saying “hi”, dank linked i think.

This is the one with him talking up the season off camera before the main intro before qualifying. He pops up on screen to say 'the teams, drivers and cars are ready - are you?'

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 23:39

    quite. magic kers?

Which leads to my next question: they can only use it for a maximum of 6.5s per lap. I guess they have telemetry to tell them when it's being used, but how does the driver know what the status is?

  • me28/03/2009 at 23:40

because if they try and use more than they're allowed, all the kers thats in the tank that they're not meant to use gives them a big 'ol electric shock :D

  • Dank28/03/2009 at 23:41

it gets topped up each time he brakes…

I meant the graphic tops up to show it's ready to be used :-)

    not a flippin' clue.

  • Dirty Scarab28/03/2009 at 23:48

how does the driver know what the status is?

That's a bloody good question. Must be some kind of readout on the steering wheel, I assume.

What I've noticed about the onboard shots of people using KERS is that the gear changes sound weird. When they hit the KERS and the boost stops, the engine revs sound odd. Almost sounds like the driver misses a gear or something.

  • Jon Waldock28/03/2009 at 23:50

    Right...

"Isn't ironic that the three teams that basically wrote the regulations this year, (Ferrari, McLaren, and Renault) were the teams that were hurting the most last night."

i hadn't thought of that. were the writers of the regulations so blindsided by their own work, that they were unable to stand back and look outside the box?

    @me

Just so you know both http://www.justin.tv/atomic_napalm and http://www.justin.tv/dimoni are showing this -

'Content from this channel removed at the request of the copyright holder. This channel will be accessible again in 21 hours'

But I'm currently watching http://www.justin.tv/jett_ which has been showing the support races, but is showing a rerun of quali at the moment, but the comments say that this channel will not be showing the race live, only recordings.

There was at least 3 other channels listed in the sports directory related to the Aus GP so hopefully there will be a live feed up for the race from someone.

It looks like old man Bernie has found out about live streaming on the web and has his lawyers keep a close eye on Justin.tv

  • SteveintheUK29/03/2009 at 02:42

    @me

My last comment has got stuck in moderation, basically people on Justin.Tv have just said in the comments that the BBC is coming down really hard on Justin.tv showing live feeds of they shows.

I thought it may have been Bernie but it would appear that the BBC has it's lawyers awake at 3.30am, I won't like to see the lawyers bills.

that's a good point. they must've been aware of what was going at the end of last year, or maybe with other sports, because they couldn't have jumped on this in the space of two days could they?

just a quick note to anyone who's up early / still up for the gp. i had a slight scare a couple of hours ago, when alex noted the timestamps on the comments hadn't changed to BST. on further investigation i found this comment in some code i wrote before christmas:

// NB: need to be aware of timezone changes

// specifically relating to comment flooding.

// think this will be a major issue when switching to BST

doh! i meant to come back to it, honest.

have quickly patched the date to be one hour forward and i'll fix properly later this week. today is not a good day to be messing around with code, so if you spot anything going wonky, please, please yell.

I seem to have been chasing my tail for the last few hours catching up on stuff. The Expedition 19 crew have docked with the ISS so there are now 6 crew members on the ISS until the Expedition 18 crew leave in a few days time. Must remember to watch NASA TV tomorrow to find out what they do on a handover because I have never seen one before.

I posted a comment after quali but it is worth repeating. Comments were arriving so fast during quali that sometimes they were off the page instantly. Is it possible to increase the polling rate for the race if we get a similar comment rate?

  • Journeyer29/03/2009 at 03:08

justin.tv/dragons_bar is showing the MotorsTV feed of the Aus Gp so guess I’ll have to watch that if we can’t find a channel showing the BBCs broadcast.

sportzone4 also has the beeb feed, I think. :)

    good question. can do.

have something in the works that'll allow comments to appear near instantaneously. it'll probably be a couple of races in before that happens though.

    Ooooh... instantaneously. :D

near instantaneously. not quite blink of the eye stuff :)

how long until they lap the field?

I don't think they will. If they have 30 seconds on the third car why stress the cars and drivers trying to push it. Bank the result. Especially now that we have all the multi-race components.

Once they get a lead like that, they'll back off and ensure they don't get any reliability gremlins.

You race until first and second are secure then settle. You can't afford to de-motivate one of your drivers at this stage of the season.

And if Button's pace from Q3 yesterday holds up, then things might get settled pretty quickly.

  • Steven Roy29/03/2009 at 03:27

    what happened last year?

I can't remember what happened yesterday

  • Journeyer29/03/2009 at 03:28

I can’t remember what happened yesterday

Last year, no one challenged Lewis into Turn 1.

Got quiet all of a sudden... The calm before the storm, perhaps? :)

Thanks, that may be useful as the justin.tv/dragons_bar is now showing the Chevy Chase film Invisible Man

  • SteveintheUK29/03/2009 at 03:56

Not sure if they are going to be showing it in they live feed, a lot of sports events are on there when on Live so want to next sure I have a second feed ready.

yeah they will do. they've shown every session so far in medium and high quality streaming (we can't embed though, and it's limited to uk residents).

should have multiple angles on the website for the race too.

i think it'll be a mirror of what's on the freeview (red button) coverage.

Has there been any news since last night?

    No more protests or penalties

  • Steven Roy29/03/2009 at 04:19

i have news.. renault are going to fail because they don’t even know who they’re fighting against today. check out this graphic on their site:

If Alonso overtakes the two BMWs he will think he has won.
