That's it, it's over, but what a lot there is to talk about! We have just enjoyed the first race of the 2009 season, and it was a corker. Safety cars, overtaking aplenty, this will keep us going for... well, until next week I guess. Here's what we're talking about:
- We're still trying to decide whether knowing the fuel loads ahead of the race is a good or a bad thing. We took a poll yesterday, and without wanting to get into the debate about refuelling, it has certainly thrown up some interesting thoughts. Personally, I say no, it's information I don't need, but if it's there, I might as well make use of it.
- It didn't seem to make any difference how much fuel was in those Brawn cars. They finished as they started, a 1-2, despite Rubens best efforts to have some bad luck. Button though, was on it from start to finish, and took a great second win.
- We're also wondering just how lucky Hamilton can be. He started from near enough the back of the grid, and ended up in fourth, almost in a podium position. Most of it was due to the misfortune of others, which puts him squarely in the lucky category.
That'll do it for now. There's plenty else to talk about, so don't stick to what I've mentioned above. I'll see you in the comments.
1st, and no mention of force India getting lucky? Perhaps a point this year guys?
Btw, happy birthday Dank ;)
Happy Birthday Dank!! :D
can anyone get onto autosport or is it just me?
And Hamilton may still get that podium position depending on the outcome of the investigation into Trulli passing him under the safety car.
It's working now but veeeeeeeeery slowly.
it's well slow - but then again, how often does THAT happen!
Sorry I dropped off half way through, my bro came over and we were caught up in the race!!!!
Worth getting up for - roll on Malaysia!
He could even get the win, if it is decided that the diffusers are illegal!
BBC F1 Website Autralia
Er...
How'd you know?!!
Thanks :-D
happy birthday sir dank :)
the wiki know all :D
I guess it is because he is part of the Red Bull family ;)
Aww there's little kiddies outside who just ran down the street saying 'he won, jenson button won!'
how cute :D
shucks. the only people i ever see run down the street here are crazy football fans. they're funny, just not as cute.
awwww
Oh yeah baby! If this is true, I'm doing (metaphorical) cartwheels.
PS. hello everybody!
10 place grid drop for Vettel at the next race for causing an avoidable accident.
I've no idea where Mr C is in fantasy racers.. all i know is i have more points than him :)
Damnit - wrong thread... :(
oh? :(
and also fined $50'000 for not pulling off the track with a terminally damaged car.
I think that's harsh.
That's a shame. I think both drivers are to blame for thatr crash, not just Seb.
Italian media:
F1. Gp Australia. Button vince, Barrichello secondo. Disastro Ferrari.
shows you how it all works over here ;)
BMW Sauber are claiming De Seb cost them victory - I wonder what they have been taking.
I think that is fair, in honesty he should have pulled over quicker, but I would contest the incident looks like Robert was just as much at fault.
autosport have hamilton third
trulli down 25 sec
http://f1.uk.reuters.com/teams/t4/news/SP412821.php
"The Formula One race stewards later ruled that Trulli, driving a Toyota, had overtaken Lewis while the safety car was on the course and handed him a 25-second penalty, which saw him relegated from third and out of the points."
Harsh on Trulli, could have just swapped the places, no?
read article here
autosport is really not loading for me :s
Reuters has the story too:
http://f1.uk.reuters.com/teams/t4/news/SP412821.php
they are more or less the same story.
autosport says:
d'oh. Only just completed the fantasyracers update too.
Right - back to the beginning...
:(
I hope this improves my present 450th place!
But I think there are other decisions pending so you might wanna wait.
I hope not! once the race is over, the results should stand - and that's that!.
So, could Rubens have won if he had got off the line better?
Driver's Standings after the Trulli penalty:
Jenson Button: 10
Rubens Barrichello: 8
Lewis Hamilton: 6
Timo Glock: 5
Fernando Alonso: 4
Nico Rosberg: 3
Sebastien Buemi: 2
Sebastien Bourdais: 1
Torro Rosso will be happy.
I hwhat happens if you end up over-spending for the next race by not changing your drivers.
Will the delagation of Trulli from third change the Fantasy Results - I thought I had a good score but lots of people did way better so my position is actually quite low.
Don't you 'earn' or 'lose' money if your drivers change value?
Could and would have.
So where's the TrulliTrain?
Great race, cars were closer through the corners, KERS worked, the BBC program has knocked ITV's program into a cocked hat...and for someone like myself - who can't get enough F1 during race day : the red button option which takes you to the BBC's forum - and another hour of F1 talk with the BBC team after the race, was just the ticket... :)
derailed mate... ;)
It is nice to see that the BBC has updated the points standings before the Official Formula One website.
Constructor Standings
Brawn-Mercedes: 18
McLaren-Mercedes: 6
Toyota: 5
Renault: 4
STR-Ferrari: 3
Williams-Toyota: 2

great photos! Lou will love the first two ;)
very nice!
Great stuff wolfie!
Man, the light was quite low at the end!
Rubens is my driver of the day. I wouldn't have been surprised if his head went down after lap 1 but he kept going and going and even without Kubica/Vettel he done very very well.
Why the hell was Vettel trying to finish the race? He surely knew he couldn't scrape points. I thought a penalty would be for the incident, but for avoiding the instruction? Damn.
The 10-place penalty for Sepang was for the incident.
Red Bull were fined the 50k, not Vettel, as I understand it.
Because it was inevitable the saftey car would come out to finish the race and he attempted to get get points behind the safety car it seems.
Really silly of him to do that I'd say, been playing too much playstation f1 to carry on driving with 3 wheels ;)
After a couple of dodgy decisions last year, the FantasyRacers results are 'locked in' after race day.
Post Trulli results are updated now. Who's that in second?!?!?!
It's happened in NASCAR before when a race finished under a yellow flag, IIRC
That's right. If your driver goes up in value you keep the profit, as your budget will increase in line.
the light was really getting low and also my lense died on my, yet again ! happened to me in Singapore on Friday, at least now it died only on Sunday half way through the race. had to switch to manual. no fun with such light conditions :-)
I 'earned' 2 million for example...
more importantly who is that in FIRST, with 13 teams on the same points, 828, how comes Christine was placed top, I think an investigation in to backhanders between Christine and FR are in order here, but who's is going to be brave enough to put in a formal complaint against Christine? I may be stupid enough to point it out, but I'm not that stupid to put the complaint in.
However you managed to do it many congrats Christine on being top of out league. Don't forget to post a screen cap of it on Drop.io as no one will believe you where every top by the time we get to the end of season review.
So how many teams will be working on a rear diffuser similar to BrawnGP just in case the appeal is turned down?
I've lost almost 5 million. :(
I guess I will upgrade my account so that I can start over.
I was wrong earlier, I had 450 points not 450th place. Now on 480 in 266th.. I need to make changes..
Sorry, that should read 'Christine on being top of our league.'
Right I have t go and meet a friend to go cycling now, back in a couple of hours or 3.
Further proof that the natural order of F1 has been completely turned on it's head!
All of them!
If your drivers are currently worth 42.0 then yes, your budget is now 42.0m, and not the 40.0m that you started with.
However if you drop a driver, you will only be awarded with his current value minus 0.2m - which will reduce your budget accordingly.
Hehe, the Jenson Button Top Gear episode is on Dave now :)
The secondary 'sort' is the order of entry. Nothing underhand. I've never been offered a bribe. Never. (never). NEVER.
A bit disappointing really...
I'm not looking forward to the podcast, it will be 1 min for practise, 1 min for quali, maybe 2 min for the race and 46 mins of Christine going on about how she is top of the league.
and yes, I am predicting 50 mins for the SidepodCast ep98
Jenson Top Gear episode? This is news to me. Top Gear's on BBC tonight too actually.
Looking on BBCi, if you press the blue button and choose the Sport on BBC option, look at today and it says the highlights are on BBC2 at 7, not 3 like had been said. Yet if you look on Sky's tv guide, it says TG is on at 7 and no mention of F1.
Top Gear on BBC is just repeats, has been for a few weeks.
Someone is protesting there innocents a little to hard.
OK, I really have to go know, my friend just texted my to remind me that the clock went forward and to make sure I wasn't late.
See you all late
I guess you must have made lots of changes? The worst drop so far is 0.4m below the starting price.
Oh, wondering about the highlights also, mainly because they have a bit more opinion and punditry then.
I topped the league?? w00t!!
Mr C is 189th.
I definitely did that. I can never make up my mind :)
Why didn't you go for Team Germany?
Right... just watching the Danish coverage now while I wait for the BBC one to finish...
And you're second overall - among ALL racers in ALL leagues.
no thanks
Team Finland then?
Congrats Christine and Lou for doing well in Fantasy Racers. It really pays not to change your drivers - I made a huge mistake which ended up in me dropping LeSeb and then not getting a driver as good at scoring points (left with a choice of Fisi or Adrian - so it had to be the German).
Team scores:
Sidepodcast - 828
ForceIndiaF1 - 815
Autosport - 800
I lost out because my second and third placed drivers took each other out.
SidepodViking update:
Christian Horner told Danish TV they plan to have a Brawn diffuser (sounds like a hairdryer ;-) ) by Barcelona..
Now Christine is part of our Dream Team against Autosport. No more messing about like last year. Game on! :D
Does this mean they're effectively giving up on the appeal?
No, I think it means they plan to cover all their bases so that if their appeal fails they can have something similar on the car.
This isn't the first time - when Brabham had their fan car, none of the teams liked it because it was against the spirit of the rules... but Colin Chapman was still going to copy the design anyway!
Just remember not to change any member in your team - I changed one member and all my drivers costs went up. I really do not like this new Fantasy Racers - am considering giving up as you cannot change drivers without losing. It has taken out the fun of it as your are stuck with the first team you selected if it was a fairly good team.
Remember not to change your team! Kubica and Vettel were really good today.
SidepodViking update #2:
Tom Kristensen is of the opinion that Brawn GP are '100% a Honda team' with a change of name... Not sure if he knows the engine has changed ;-)
I'm confused. Why can't you change your team?
I am considering keeping my team the same because I think I have managed to pick drivers that were good value for money and were very strong today. I can certainly hedge my bets with the team I have!
I'm keeping mine too. I'm hesitant with Kimi, but they'll come good eventually.
As am I. If Kubica had stayed running I'd have got loads more points.
Transfer penalties.
You get penalised for changing? I thought it was just that the drivers values went up and down.
It says that there are transfer penalties on the driver selection page.
Gosh. I didn't realise.
This is actually really hypocritical - if you protest then you should stick to your principles. If I was the FIA I would take note of this and it would be one more reason to rule it as legal for the rest of the year.
I have lost respect for two teams today - I no longer support BMW-Sauber because of their complaining "we could have won but Vettle took us out" and now Red Bull with this hypocricy.
There is a time to lodge complaints and a time not to. McLaren were right to lodge a case today as Trulli should not have overtaken Lewis under the Safety Car. I feel really sorry for Trulli and Toyota but it is the rule. For 2009 my fan teams are Brawn, Toyota and Williams, but also hope that STR and FI do well as the little teams (FI podcast was really great and generous to other teams). Hopefully the rear diffusers remains for the rest of the season.
SidepodViking update #4:
We are now watching the Red Bull KERS video (In English)
Agreed.
It means you can only change any driver under very very extreme conditions of under-performing - also seems that more drivers went than went down - sadly I forgot to copy what they started of with so it could be a perception.
And to think Vettel came from THEIR team.
I'm gratified to know that my worst team was one of the automated ones (Caro has the most expensive drivers each time) and that the fully-flexible one was 2nd out of my five teams.
It's nice that LCM Barato is equal 21st in the league.
As a consequence of that, TomK is now explaining slicks and wings.
sadly I forgot to copy what they started of with so it could be a perception.
The "Driver Values" screen on Fantasy Racers tells you the amount each driver cost at each point in the championship.
Sutil, Massa, Alonso, Fisichella, Kovalainen, Nakajima, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Piquet, Heidfeld, Bourdais, Buemi, Glock and Webber went down
Trulli stayed the same.
Button, Rosberg, Kubica, Barrichello and Vettel went up.
The thing that makes the increases more notable is that they tend to be quite large - for example Button is 1.3m more than he was before this race.
So Button increased by a Sutil?
Is this part of an experiment of sorts? :)
Eh? Didn't Sutil's value start at 5M?
I think those teams that complain about a feature and that features ends up being considered legal (in other words a false claim of being illegal) should not be allowed to introduce that feature for at least four races. We know BMW, Renault, Ferrari and Red Bull are trying to get competitive advantage out of the situation. When it was first raised the FIA opinion was it was a clever interpretation of the rules, the Austrialian Marshalls have ruled it legal so if a team wishes to persue its complaint it needs to do so with conviction and be prepared to lose out fairly significantly.
It is not as if Ferrari and Red Bull are fully playing within the rules themselves, but Williams decided to withdraw their as legitimate complaint in the interests of the sport.
Yeah sorry he was - I'm just talking rubbish :-(
SidepodViking update #5:
Wow, we have moved to the high tech part of the buildup - the guys are standing over a monitor with an LCD map of the circuit on it ;-)
Is this the race replay? Or is it the first time they're showing the race?
I taped the live coverage in case I couldn't get a web feed. It's moved TV channels and it is better because last year there was no build up at all.
Standard punditry aimed at those who know nothing of the sport though :-(
just been told my flight is overbooked and that I am bumped up to business class. that means bed instead of seat for the night. i think am happy :-)
How long until the race appears on the BBC iPlayer? I need to watch it again! :(
Legend!
Nacht! :D
here is picture of the top of the podium just before the Brawn gang showed up:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/top-of-the-podium-jpg
I think the repeat has just started:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlive/bbc_one_london/
Is this part of an experiment of sorts? :) {Comment #111}
Yes. It's an experiment to see how good systems are compared to the flexibility of a team fully chosen by me (LCM Dragons) and a team partly populated by favouritism (LCM Fire Lizard).
This is why LCM Barato has Piquet and Glock next race instead of Button and Barrichello. Points-scoring they undoubtedly are, but they are now too expensive for that particular automated team. Who knows - at this rate of knots they might get so expensive they end up in the expensive team?
VERY likely, actually. ;)
Congratulations to Sidepodcast Racers and team owner Christine :-D

Thanks Ali - since Trulli was demoted he should have gone down in price as well - that cost me hugely!
That makes me very very happy :D
That also makes me happy :D
wow! they're awesome! :D
Just to clarify - when you view your current drivers on the 'View Drivers' page, their values already include the 0.2m transfer penalty, so show you what you will get if you were to transfer them out.
The reason for the transfer penalty was down to the fact that people who didn't have access to their computer over the weekend, or did something other than log straight on after the race, would be at a disadvantage to those who were quick off the mark and could quickly switch to all the successful drivers and 'bank' the profit when everybody else got around to making their changes.
I guess it also makes people try to live by their original decisions too. Many competitions don't allow any changes once racing gets underway.
Anyway - it is a new concept for this year, so I do appreciate any feedback, good or bad.
watching the race again now. I feel kinda bad for getting mad at rubens now for the first corner when kovaleinen shunted him...
SidepodViking update #5:
Well, I chose not to watch the race footage as I'm about to watch the BBC coverage again - I just watched the last 5 laps. But the commentary is a little better than before and I can understand more of it - it's still a little flat and dull though :-(
My first go at Fantasy Racers and I really enjoyed it, thanks Danny :D
Me too Danny, Thanks
- although I preferred my result before Glock's penalty
me too, although all 5 of my teams did pretty rubbish!
wow that's almost Brawn esque! :D i've gone up to 14 :) yay!
oh... neither did i...
Trulli, you mean? Yeah, me too.
Same here, I was about 13 or 14th. :(
Although 35th out of 400 isn't bad still so it's all good.
Thanks for clearing that up, Danny.
I like it so far! Although, I would say that. :)
Jason Watt is now in the Studio!
Im tying for the lead in Fantasy Racers!!!!
How the heck did that happen!!!!!
My complaint is when you update one driver - everything gets changed - all I wanted to do was change bourdais to buemi - otherwise I was happy my initial selection. Had there been a warning that this will change all driver values I would not have changed my selection. Now my entire team is wreaked without any ability to change it for the rest of the season. It just is no fun it really really sucks - sorry Danny I think you have destroyed the fun from Fantasy Racers and I won't bother - it has become pointless as you you can only make one strategy at the begiining of the season.
In the League? Or overall?
In League tying for 1st, overall tying for 2nd :D
although my excitment died when i realise how many people are also tying....:(
So you're part of the Sidepodcast Dream Team too? Lead us to victory over Autosport! :D
:D
That shouldn't be the case. Only drivers that you change will alter values.
What's your team called - just to check there's nothing funny going on, like...
I mentioned earlier that I liked the red button (no pun intended Lou) stuff and "me" shot me down a little...
I was not intimating that red button was top technology merely that I liked the following:-
More than one view
More than one commentator
The regularly rescreened replay of qualy and the race
The post race stuff
Not saying it can't be better just that it's light years ahead of previous years....
Roll on Malaysia....
I loved it, i had the doohickey in one corner, the main feed in another corner, the onboard feed in another corner and live timing in another, it was great. Especially the onboard cameras as you really see the racing more than you do normally!!
Guys, you will soon realise with Fantasy Racers that you actually cannot change your selections you will discover there is no point to it or actually any fun in competing as there is now no strategy in Fantasy Racers - its too much of a lock out. Unless you had six drivers and both Brawns in your selection it is history - you can give up any idea of doing well for the entire year.
Danny did say that what happened to you wasn't supposed to happen. I think that strategy can still help you out here.
What's your team name, Rich?
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/03/29/toyota-appealing/
Toyota may appeal the decision against Trulli. They've done it through a less-known channel - the Clerk of the Course.
Best comment I've seen on BBC's 606 forum so far:
What a farce this F1 charade is turning into. Called this a sport?? Where the heck was Button last season..how many points did he accumulate.
How deluded fans can continually support this fake show is beyond my comprehension.
Oh dear. Ohhh dear oh dear.
Pot. Kettle. Black.
Danny, I think the team is called Sandbagging, if you wouldn't mind having a quick look.
Referring to 'deluded fan'.
:D exactly my thoughts. There's also another one saying the commentators talk far more than ITV and any other sport. Yes, that's the point!
Erm, they'll obviously talk more, there's less commercials! :P
It is working correctly as you have described it. Personally, if I was programming this I would warn people with a message that to change drivers you will incur a penalty of 0.2 million transfer deduction. My team was sandbagging, I had Rubens, Jenson, DeSeb, Timo, Jarno, and LeSeb. I just wanted to change LeSeb for Buemi (at the same cost) but becuase of the penalty I could not get Buemi and I now also lost the chance of returning to my original team. If a warning came up - I would left my team alone. The problem is that now I cannot change my team. The alternative is to lock all changes until the new driver costs are updated. Asd a far as I concerned you can dlete my account. As stated earlier you cannot move away from a six driver combination with BRAWN drivers which you had to start with. Last year there was actually more chance of using some strategy it is now mostly luck.
im watching the high quality replay on bbc.co.uk its great!! wish id seen this this morning
Don't we all? :)
Hey, the fact that I was able to see BBC at all was good enough for me ;-)
Rich, Danny made it quite clear in the rules that there will be a transfer penalty. I hadn't noticed either, but you can't blame Danny for that.
its like im watching a tv, rather than having that little box in the corner of my screen
do you think Rubens is trying to escape - http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr271/akfoto/z1238319026.jpg ? :P
Hehe. Me too. At least there was something for me to bridge over Star Sports' commercials and mute their awful commentary (as needed).
I was on my house roof giving him a wave :)
If the driver view shows you the price with the transfer fee already included, then it isn't really a problem that we didn't realise, is it?
SidepodViking update #6:
Watching the postrace coverage now. Jason Watt had this to say about Rubens Barrichello:
"It's nice to see an old fart like Rubens Barrichello do well - especially when he's almost as old as Tom Kristensen!" (who is sitting right next to him :-D )
I'm really confused as to what this is all about....so if i want to change my drivers like last season...what happens?
if you buy a driver for let's say 7,2 million he will show up in your team with the value 7,0 and that is also the amount you will get if you sell him.
also the changes in driver values are continuously. you just have to be smart with your exchanges. check back on Friday or sth perhaps Buemi's price will have fallen so much that you can afford him.
I may be wrong with that :)
OK - I'm not going to argue the merits of this years change, but I'll explain what's happened with your team and everyone can make their own minds up. If you want me to delete your team drop me an email to confirm and I'll do so.
The price listed under your 'available drivers' already includes the 0.2m penalty, as well as a warning underneath explaining that.
You got rid of Bourdais for 6.0m (his price at the time would have been 6.2m, but showed as 6.0m under your selected drivers) leaving you with 6.1m to spend as you had 0.1m left over originally. No other drivers in your team changed values at all.
You picked Sutil for 4.8m, leaving you 1.3m to spend. Sutil would show as 4.6m in your team as this is what you would get if you were to sell him.
Your drivers are currently worth 43.1m - so despite making the change you're doing quite well.
Congratulations to Sidepodcast Racers and team owner Christine :-D
First in the PitlaneFanatic fantasy racers league {Comment #126}
Incidentally, the predictions league I run is right at the other end of the scale in terms of points awarded, with the highest points-scorer on a massive 5 points and second place has 2 (owing to some rather picky rules...)
i like that when watching the reply of the race you can still choose the commentary. i'm listening to it with five live this time. Croftie likened the BMW pit mechanics to dentists. lol.
I hope the FOM Australia video comes out soon. Wanna see what they do with it. :)
she's SECOND?
Just remembered a story they said on Star Sports - John Button has some sort of heart condition, apparently. He needed to take some meds pre-race to ensure he's OK for the excitement of the race.
She's joint first in the League, joint second overall.
ffs!
:D
where are you?
not FIRST.
Wish I could do that but everytime I go on the red button to access f1 stuff...
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q127/Lukehmuse/DSC00540.jpg
:( and yes my tv gets v dusty!
189th, he is.
:D :D :D
hello Mr C? had a good sleep? yeah she did good :) I'm beating you too :P tbh it's probably karma for last year when you said something about never getting many points if you have Jenson in you team :D
If you get driver in at a low cost you have to stick to your entire team e.g. it is clear Brawn are very competitive but started at a low price - probably they will increase throughout the season. So you might start off at or close to 40 million limit but if left alone at the end of the season it will be much higher. Each transfer you make directly after the race incurs too much cost (which most people had not realised). The problem is that you cannot use any strategy to change drivers so you cannot select what is the optimal driver/car combination for each circuit. Consequently, you cannot include Massa doing well in Turkey and Lewis doing well at Monaco. I feel Fantasy Racers is really lame now, as people realise it is too expensive to change drivers so there is way less involvement meaning fewer people will bother to participate a the season was determined by first race results.
The idea of changing driver values through the season is actually good. If I were designing Fantasy Racers I would have a different cost for each circuit (calculated based on last years performance plus this years accumulative performance). After each race each participant has to re-select all drivers based on the new costs calculated for the next race. After a race there is a 24 hour lock out until results are finalised, new costs calculated - then you select your new drivers. This would mean you have to be active through the season. Currently if you were lucky with your first selection you have to keep it for the entire season. Consequently strategy has been replaced with luck as the first race dictates the season so now you cannot participate any further as to win it is best to remain inactive and non-participatory. This is why I say Fantasy Racers has been destroyed as a participatory past time.
aww :(
i didn't have a good sleep. i went to bed in a dream and woke into a nightmare.
Surely the problem there lies with Brawn being dominant, rather than the Fantasy Racers rules. The idea is to make a profit on say Button at this race, then select the driver who will do well in Malaysia, and make a profit on them. If it's going to be Jenson all the way, that's not the fault of the game.
awww
you know your having an odd day when you get a text saying....
"how long are your feet in cm?"
hahaha :D
Now all I really wish was to have gone back to my original selection - and then not bothered to change anything during the entire season - so it is a lot of fun.
People still need to realise you virtually cannot change drivers or switch from three to six drivers and back to four drivers. There is no strategy just luck!
Surely the strategy is selecting the drivers who are going to make you money so that you can afford to pick the drivers you want?
what makes is worse, is that i then find myself with a tape measure measuring my feet....
they are 11 inches/28cm :D im proud of my feet
Don't forget that if you feel like summing up the race in a couple of sentences, you might get a mention on the Australia GP Digest.
:D
Are we starting the panel on time, BTW? :)
We're getting there. It's fair to say Sidepodcast Towers = knackered.
Some trivia for future quizzes: Button's was the 50th start-finish win
I disagree it is the fault of the game because you cannot change drivers through the season. I guess for me the fun was to try and optimise my driver line-up for each race while working within a budget. Now the focus is to keep a good driver at all costs throughout the season. Consequently a strategy of no-change rewards too much and the first lucky draw sets the season up. If you have a bad start you also cannot make ground. Last year I started very late but could catch up this year it is impossible to do. If you cannot really change your driver line-up why bother to continue to participate? I think it is really dumb - it is both more complicated and less participatory - I guess that is modern progress look at Vista (a more complicated but less usable OS than XP)
Dont dis Vista :P
Okay. Well, I'm sorry that you don't want to continue playing, I think it's going to be a lot of fun. We'll miss you from the league.
I love that radio transmission...
Slow down rubens!!
you know your having an odd day when you get a text saying….

Er... ...30cm, same as everyone else's feet?
oogh, yay, stats. got any more?
:D
hahahaha, niceee, i like that, thats good
Riiight... may have a minor issue here.
My mom is on the Net through our wifi here at home. And she's taking a LOT of bandwidth - YouTube videos. I'm not sure if my Skype can hold up against that. If things don't work out, I may have to call in the old-phone-fashioned way.
Apparently it was the first 1-2 for a new entrant since Wolf in 1977
we have bigger issues, we haven't even got the studio set up yet :(
working on it.
tasty.
Nope, the last 1-2 debut was Mercedes in 1954. Wolf 1977 was just a debut win, I think.
Fantastic race - great to see the natural order of F1 turned on it's head. BBC did a great job for their first weekend back - light years ahead of ITV coverage.
I'm yet to be convinced that the new rules encourage more overtaking as the field seems more spread out than last year, but KERS does seem to provide quite a power boost and the cars are able to use more of the track than last year.
The only downer was that Vettel and Kubica took each other out of 2nd and 3rd places and these guys were both in my Fantasy Racers team :-(
Only a list of the drivers with the most start-finish wins:
19 Ayrton Senna
13 Jim Clark
11 Jackie Stewart
11 Michael Schumacher
9 Nigel Mansell
7 Alberto Ascari
7 Alain Prost
6 Niki Lauda
5 Juan Manuel Fangio
5 Stirling Moss
5 Jack Brabham
5 Mario Andretti
4 Mika Häkkinen
I'll bet he was grinning when he heard that ;-)
My bad .. I read it on Joe Sawards's blog
Kick her off the web or something?
Wikipedia says Wolf only ran the one car for Jody Scheckter that year. He had no teammate.
hahaha. sidepodpriorities.
I can't do that. :P It's not my mom's fault. :D
Afternoon all.
Anything exciting happened since the end of the race? Protests, disqualifications etc?
barely any
Everyone was disqualified for not being a ferrari, and Massa won....even though he didn't finish :D
Trulli demoted for the thing with Lewis. Lewis moves up to 3rd, Trulli down to 12th.
Hamilton is third and Trulli down to twelth
Jason Watt called Tom Kristensen an old fart on Danish TV
Hello all. Man that was a good race.
Pity that some clumsyness ruined both Vettel and Kubica, who I both thought had great races. Kudos to Button and Barrichello and Buemi.
On FR, my fantasy racers team name doesn't really work unless I'm winning. But I'm level on points with the champ, so alls good. Well done Christine for being good.
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/03/29/29-mar-09-trulli-handed-25-second-penalty/
Also, Vettel will get a 10-place penalty in Malaysia for dangerous driving. RBR also get a $50000 fine.
I love that radio transmission…
Slow down rubens!! {Comment #209}
I've heard of drives being told to hurry up before, but never to slow down. Surreal.
Why? It is monumentally bad!!!! It was so bad that I have scrapped all Windows from more than 50 PCs that I manage and I now use Ubuntu and Open Office which is brilliant. I also like OS X. I am working really hard for our University to stop purchasing/suport of Microsoft after the Vista disaster. So far we have moved about 500 people across to a Linux-based system. I am not alone 75% of Vista licenses have been downgraded to XP - need I say more. Vista was the biggest failure as an OS in the history of personal computing!
Jason Watt can't be an awful lot younger than TK?
Not sure if it was the biggest failure ever, but it was a failure.
Aww, why did Vettel get a grid penalty for Malaysia? I thought it was just a racing incident.
a quality idea from ollie:
http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/03/29/australia-2009-fantasy-racers-update/
Thats not true, it depends what you need from an OS, for me, Vista is perfect, a few compatability issues, but generally i've been able to sort them out myself.
according to joe he admitted it was his fault?
As did i, and Mr Brundle
That was kind of the joke - they are both the studio experts for Danish TV :-)
I think the attempt to stay on track with 3 wheels to keep himself in the points sealed his fate.
Stupid boy.
Is that like the most exctiting thing ever to happen on F1 in Danish TV?
Aw bless him, don't think he needed to do that.
he got the fine for that, the penalty was for admitting blame.
Watt looked like being a really good driver before his accident.
You could tell on the pit radio he felt he was to blame for it. :(
But why would he admit, I wonder? I'm sure his team advised him on what to say?
private "pike" vettel?
Erm... Yes. It wasn't bad coverage, but it was very basic compared to BBC or even ITV.
Its good to have a honest driver I think, not going to get him much though.
Because he was being a good sportsman. The incident was 50/50 at best because you could easily make an argument for both driver being at fault I reckon.
he lost the corner at turn one, problem is he didn't admit it until turn 3.
What chance has he got admitting to Max that he was wrong? You know what the response is going to be if you tell Max you think you deserve to be punished.
My mom's done, I think. We can try Skype first. :)
"Max, i've been a very naughty boy..."
:P
For me it was just boys being boys. Nothing for the stewards to get involved in. They are both going to get a load of grief from their teams for screwing up good results. Leave it at that.
no worries, eta 15mins.
who's up for some panelling?
after watching the race once with ITV commentary and once with five live commentary i've got to say i prefer Anthony and Croftie. I like Martin's commentary, and for me it wouldn't be a grand prix without it, but i'm still getting used to Johnathon Legard i suppose.
He was too honest about this crash, it was a racing incident in my eyes. he went for the move (although he didn't need to personally) and Kubica went to defend the racing line going into the corner. Problem is they both got it wrong. Just how I see it anyways.
Was pretty sad to hear him on the radio being so resigned about it. But it got Brawn a debut 1-2 so a double edged sword of emotions.. :)
Well if you insist I will give it a go.
ooh ooh oo ooohh ooh
*raises arm as high as possible*
ITV ?????
I'm sending in a Digest contribution via e-mail.
Kubica and BMW see it otherwise, of course.
no ted though :(
sorry. BBC.
I am, of course!
I'll just restart my computer and BRB in 5 minutes!
I like Brundle-Legard so far. I'll hear Croft-Davidson next weekend. :)
Almost forgot about the boat race
i know but they have Ant... who was incredible today.
i have to admit that Ted is my fav bit about the BBC coverage...plus whenever he's mensioned in my head i shout "TED NEWSSS!!""
I'm watching EastEnders on an F1 channel. My, oh my. :O
It seems he got this, because he admitted it was his fault. Lewis who never admits he makes any mistake would have got away with. Personally I thought it was as much Robert's fault as LeSeb. This sets a precedent that no driver can ever admit they made a mistake. I felt LeSeb had absolutely no where to go so it was a racing incident. Sure he should have pulled over after the accident so the fine is appropriate.
I also thought that although Trulli was to blame - it was quite a small error (having left the track and lost position to Lewis under the safety car that it was OK to regain the position) the result of the safety car was a brutal punishment. It would have been fairer to have dropped him to fourth and Lewis to third - which he deserved considering everything.
Did anyone try any of these onboard cams?
Someone said earlier - dropping Trulli to 4th was rectifying the error. But Trulli committed an offense, and he needed to be punished. I think the stewards did the right thing with Trulli.
Can I suggest a team names, Team Vettel v Team Kubica
or
Team Branson v Team Brawn
Hi guys, what a race, eh?! :D So happy for Brawn GP with a great 1-2. Bit disappointed that Vettel and Kubica had to spoil each other's races. Personally, I feel Kubica, despite being faster, turned in on Seb. It might have been classed a racing incident, but I feel Vettel has been unfairly punished.
But an amazing and in some ways unexpected eventual top 3 in more ways than one. If that's the kind of racing we get from just one round, I am so looking forward to Malaysia already!:D
I haven't seen the Trulli incident. Did he just lose one place and then take it back or did he lose more? If it was only one place then that is all the penalty should have been.
Team Virgin v Team Brawn? :D
Who are you like? :D
I used the onboard feed on the website
I think he just lost the one place to Lewis.
hahaha :D
Team DC vs. Team EJ
Team Legard vs. Team Croft
Better get the pronounciation right.
In that case the penalty is ridiculous. In the IRL the race director would have be on the radio telling his team to tell him to give the place back before the safety car pulled off. Maybe F1 is not high tech enough to do that.
Not sure if it was the biggest failure ever, but it was a failure. Comment #238}
DOS 4 is the only thing I can compare to Vista in the history of failures of operating systems. DOS 4 corrupted much of the data on systems with it installed and had a multitude of bugs, including one that made the computer beep randomly when using the "dir" function. Which wouldn't be so odd except that "dir" is only meant to say what files are in a given folder, not attempt to auto-generate computer music...
It didn't help that it was the last version of DOS before Windows was invented, but the way DOS 4 was implemented made it virtually useless except as a curio.
ITV vs. BBC?
I think the stewards didn't even notice it until after the race. Remember, we got no TV footage of it, not even replays.
Being on the ITV team is going to be unpopular
There is endless possibilites
Team I know what I'm doing v Team Suuuuuuure you do
Team Rly? vs Team ya
Brundle picked it up on the commentary because he had read that Hamilton was third on the timing screen then fourth but didn't know why.
ooh, thats gone all wierd
Like being on team FIA??? :-D
I thought that the public were to have access to the replays of stuff tStewards were to make decisions on .. after the debacle at Spa last year
*Team O Rly?
3rd comment with a name like that. time to change it back. :)
they only saw it after the race, probably. on some obscure feed. kinda like what happened with Rubens and DC in Japan 2004.
With FIA you have the power. With ITV you have ad breaks while BBC keep scoring points and you have Blundell muttering unintelligibly.
controversial ones.
we should kick up a fuss.
oooh your right, didnt notice at all. i must have dragged the link into the box without knowing
Good point
unwanted breaks and muttering unintelligibly are prerequisites for the Sidepodpanel ;-)
Was it not just a trial in Fuji?
Perhaps the FIA didn't like that idea.
F1 Wolf has got some great pictures up (if this hasn't been shared already):
http://www.f1wolf.com/2009/03/2009-australian-gp-my-sunday-photos.html
My favourite is this one: http://www.f1wolf.com/2009/03/2009-australian-gp-my-sunday-photos.html/champagne
Does anyone know when the boat race actually kicks off?
I've made 500 comments on BlogF1 :D
(I would type it there, but I can't get BlogF1 to load now :( )
some fab look data about the race:
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/wikified/ousefulTestboard/AustraliaLapTimes_Viz
They realised it helped the sport out and decided it wasn';t going to work.
Are you Ollie's top commenter?
Wikipedia says 15:40.
Isn't that you Steven? ;-)
according to joe he [Vettel] admitted it was his fault? {Comment #242}
He said it on the team radio, which was broadcast during the race. To be precise, he said sorry and then called himself an idiot (I thought was a bit unkind about himself, but there you go...)
I think it was the crash itself he was apologising for, since it came before he parked the car.
No idea. I don't think I have made that many comments on Blog F1.
he also admitted it to the stewards post-race.
he lost the corner at turn one, problem is he didn’t admit it until turn 3. {Comment #256}
The radio is delayed for filtering purposes, so it's difficult to say when the apology was made.
A few compatibility issues!!! It eats computer computer resources requiring huge cost in hardware upgrade/replacements. An estimated 75% of users have downgraded to XP an eight-year old operating system than to continue with it as of December 2008. Please find another OS where the majority of users downgraded to such an old system. If you can then we can say that is was a bigger failure than Vista. When we eventually dump Windows we will save millions! it is a no-contest Ubuntu is superior in every conceivable way.
source: http://www.crn.com/software/212501005;jsessionid=CUWQELMHKEF1UQSNDLPCKH0CJUNN2JVN?queryText=Vista+75%25
He seemed to say sorry very calmly and there wasn't much background from the car, so I think he said it after contact.
no, on track, not on the radio.
Windows 7 will fix all that - like XP fixed ME...
Your not listening to me, im saying it depends what you want for your computer. I don't need to program computers and all that jazz. I play games on Vista, i use office programs, i use Firefox, it has emails too. For me, Vista is perfect.
Yes but the solution was not to go back in time eight years! DOS 4 was a disaster.
I do the same things and Vista is a pain. Regular crashes. The amount of processor capacity it uses is mindblowing.
Right, I'm all set for the panel, and I just tested my mike ;-)
How would SPC work if ef everyone checked their equipment in advance?
Same here. :)
My stuff seems to be working better today too so no ice cream is necessary. ;)
couple of mins. it's audio only, so you may wanna open this page in a new tab:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/live
the first player is the live one.
Is that how its going to work from now on?
we have no idea :)
:D
Do I just get to waffle about it in this thread then?
if that's cool?
we can put up a post if you like, but without video, it might be quite confusing to anyone to stumbles across it.
No point, just leave it for the debrief ;)
really?? i never have any problems
These rowers are monsters. 6 ft 7 in and they are giving their weights to the nearest ounce?
I actually defended Microsoft up until Vista. NT, 2000 and XP were solid platforms. I was also rather anti Linux - but when you get to use Ubuntu - its absolutely brilliant especially if you have to manage lots of PCs which I have to. I have to managed labs with OS X, Ubuntu and Windows - the pain in the butt is the Windows (running XP). I also manage about 12 Servers (Server 2003) and two Linux Debian - on stability you cannot compare - the Windows Servers are a pain with nearly weekly re-boots, neither Linux server has been re-booted or restarted in more than a year!
My Australian dining experience is over...
Tim Tam's - just wonderful, especially when dunked in a fresh coffee. :D
Alligator - Just had it done on the griddle so it was cooked all the way through *not sure if you can have it rare* But it was very tasty and went very nicely with a bit of chili sauce.
Kangaroo - was told to treat this steak. Fried for 30seconds each side then put on the plate in a preheated over at 80°C - Interesting taste, a bit like rabbit, but not entirely unlike steak either. It was a bit tougher than steak though.
Vegemite - someone just **** in the tub... thats all it is. Bleugh.
I'l hapilly eat Tim tams, Alligator or Kangaroo again.
I'm going to take it that Malaysia is going to be quite different.
I can hear you
Heyyy counting!@!!!
I won't open the live player - I'm maximizing my bandwidth. Can you give me a call?
Sore throat? Hot Ribena! Helps looooooots
VERY much so, I'd think. :)
Can hear but not see
Oh and i can hear you, i'm not reading your thoughts :D
Haven't sorted anything out yet... Should get onto that as I only have 5 days really.
Its not a camera live ;)
Thats the point
I cant even ehar.
No video just sound
Hey guys, what have I missed? :)
That was funny, Mr C. Call me up on my Skype account. I added you up.
Strange, the timer isn't moving? Even when I press play.
oh my sound isn't working...
Might be the same problem as me.
The timer is working for me but not flashing
sorry I must have missed it earlier
Is there a live show or something?
no it's firefox. shall reboot to see if that makes a difference
we're calling u.
Podpanel
http://www.sidepodcast.com/live/ and you are being called
jon, are u free for panneling?
I don't have a microphone
Ooooh. Sounds very interesting.
Ayam Masak Merah sounds really good. :D Chicken pieces are pan fried a golden brown and cooked in a spicy tomato sauce.
phone?
Still got no headset. :(
Sorry.
Grrr, doesn't even work on chrome.
That's a crap excuse :-)
I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered. :(
My mobiles battery life would probably last the first 10 minutes only. Very old battery.
Look, we need two more people, people! Who is keen?
anyone else for a panel? last call.
I will at some point, however lots of coursework is the priority :( boo
Sadly not, need to finish off some homework.
I would have loved to listen to it though.
Was the penalty given to Trulli after the race fair or not and if you were a Steward what would you have decided?
losing sound when Steven is talking
Poor Lukeh
It did come back though
It seems to me that Lewis passed Jarno under the yellow and realised what he had done and let Jarno resume his correct position.
Apparently Jarno went off and lost the position
Sounded like a menopausal change
oh :( why isn't firefox giving me any sound :( it works for itunes....
but not firefox...
GP+ is ready to download
Try Chrome
Cool, thanks Kathi
that's not working either :(
The safety car looked stupid doddling around to pick everyone up
That was just stupid
No
yeah but it was his own fault. He overdrove the tyres in the first 3 laps
No to what?
okay am listening on the desktop now..
Do you think the new rules and the fugly cars worked .. my answer was no
?
I've just restarted the whole computer
The same thing happened to a few drivers. It may be the driver or it may be the car. We need a few races to find out the truth
Great! Anything you want me to ask the panellists? ;)
Straight to the point
I think its simple, the racing is as good as last year, but this year, there is better looking cars.
yeah i did that. it didn't work either...
Who is the most awesome driver?
erm... not sure what you've already asked. i'll listen for the mo :)
That's why I didn't do the panel today .. I'm sooo tired
Hey! :P
Check your sound mixer to see if one of the mutes has been checked
come now, we know the answer to that already ;)
How are you listening on the desktop?
it's all fine.
Kubica?
guess again ;)
Timo?
nope. :P
Hmm, when I'm changing the sound on another thing it makes a ping, for the firefox nothing happens.
same
Might as well wait until it comes out.
Btw, who is doing it?
i've just realised that (and here comes my awful description) in fire fox the time on the player is not moving, it's staying at however long the stream has been running until i pressed play. For example it seems paused on 39:16, i then stop and start the player again and it stays at 40:41. not sure if that's my computer though. probably... it's not playing the sound for youtube videos either...
RTL complained, perhaps they change it *is hopeful*
Exactly the same problem as me. We don't have the same computers do we?
about what?
i'm using my laptop... it's an acer aspire 5920. :/
the green stripes
Acer Aspire 5315. Similar
What do you think of the timing of Brawn GP's decision to make 270 people redundant on the the day they did the 1-2. Are they trying to hide bad news behind the win?
ah... i hate my laptop btw :P
It has the opportunity to be bloomin irritating at the worst possible time
they announced that last week didn't they?
Nice answer by Gavin :D
mine took about a month to connect to the internet when i first got it. and has months of working fine, and then it goes through longer periods of time where it is annoying.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_PZWe85nlI
Footage of Trulli going off, amateur footage from the grandstands
Couldn't Charlie Whiting just have said give the place back before it got to the end of the race
he didn't notice
Lou, are you on DD. If so click on the link Mr C gave you earlier and it should work.
Awwwww a message from Ross - http://www2.brawngp.com/
I love this team so so so much.
DD?
Desktop Doohickey.
yay! :D
oh... no i'm using the normal doohickey
http://www.sidepodcast.com/live/ Look what we have
sorry wrong link View kai-ebel-png
Didn't you know?
RG you bloomin genius. Go on Desktop Doohickey, click on the first Kathi link and in theory it should work for you.
Only a German would wear a shirt like that ;-)
Bishop?
Mr C, what we need is Anthony!! he was awesome today for five live. i mean he predicted the vettel/ kubica crash about 3 seconds before it happened! :D
So did the BBC TV team to be fair.
So did Brundle, he said 'Theres going to be contact' and there was.
OH no, PLEASE no, NO, NO, NO!!!
"Brawn Supremacy" as a headline...
okay.. bad example. to me it just seemed like Davidson, and Croftie were a better team..
GP+ headline was Brawn Cocktail LOL
The final question? Damn
Wrong thread, don't quote me please.
Oh yes
hahahaha XD
Wrong place guys.
DO ITTTT :D
I've never heard Murray say that
Luke, your hilarious!
Sorry I started us on the wrong thread come back here
The good news with Giggles all doing this singing it detracts me from doing YMCA.
lol
hahaha :D
Luke = Panel Legend
Fantastic Gavin :D Pmsl :D :D
Blimey Mr C, that laugh caught me off guard (ie was loud)
Nooooo, i didn't miss him :D
I need my inhaler I'm laughing too much
:D agreed
oh dear... we appear to be commenting over two different threads... don't kill us Mr & Mrs C...
Don't blame me, I'm trying to stop it.
ooooh, didnt see that :D
there is no Brawn merchandise,if there was i'd know ;) i'm not even sure if the kit they are wearing now is the final kit or just temp.
*falls off bed in tiredness*
awww.
Fantastic guys!
What time is the debrief tonight? 7pm BST?
Was I devious with that last question, by the way? :)
If there IS a merch stand by any chance, I'll see what I can do for you. :)
Yep ... just as bad as I expected?
Whats going on with Stevens post?
YES
if I say no will you record the entire malaysian race with you in the background commentating as james Allen?
haha. :D
Yup, 7 PM. Hmmm... Maybe I should try and catch it? I'll see if I can...
Erm... no. :P
Thank you. :)
so quiet :(
Completely devious and shameful. Tut tut.
;)
i'm going to attempt to fix the sound on my laptop..
For some reason when I quote something and decide that I don't want to comment on it I can't clear the quote box. So you are not missing comments. It is just me trying to tidy up
Right, Time for Sidepodpies. See you all at 7, and thanks for another fantastic panel. Great fun as always :-D
Ah, you lot didn't see it coming! You were like bunnies in the headlights. :P
Apparently Oxford won the boat race.
Are you on LCLT? It's something I encounter from time to time.
Theres a surprise
Yes
Try pressing delete instead of backspace. It might work.
Have you tried pressing the clear button
clear comment button, to the right will fix. looks like a "new page" icon.
Google Chrome is holding up a lot better than Firefox ever did. Firefox was always hanging and seemed to need a 30 second thinking break every ten minutes.
Never noticed the clear button. Thanks
It's the best one out there performance-wise. But doesn't that have privacy issues?
Don't know. All I know about it is that Lou likes it. Beyond that I know nothing
hang on....... suddenly my sound is working. How the hell?! i didn't do anything..
That happened to me awhile ago before the panel... :-/ Did you close any tabs?
if it was on a mac, it would be my default browser.
we lost the war against privacy years ago. google knows everything anyways.
sidepodmagic
i don't much about it either. but i like it alot. i use Firefox to download stuff though. plus i will use firefox when i need loads of tabs open.
The Curse of Sidepodpanel...
Sounds like a pirates of the Carribean tagline..
Its working for me too.
Mr C, what have you been up to?
I like the fact the Firefox remembers the tabs you had open even after the machine has been switched off
have you seen this on Ollie's http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/03/29/red-bull-give-popular-blogger-ultimatum/
yes :(
I really like the add-ons
There was another one posted last night about it as well.
Thats why I can't migrate from Firefox to Chrome. Chrome is so good but it has no usability with Firefox's addons which I absolutely love using.
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Sport/Pix/pictures/2009/3/27/1238155052912/Mark-Webber-001.jpg
This is begging for a caption.
i don;t think i have a single firefox add-on.. oh well. :)
Keith posted it too. Any reaction from RBR, I wonder?
'Mark Webber in Opening Cupboard Door Disaster'
:D
any recommendations?
So did I miss a Panel AND a debrief? :(
Mark practices his gurning action in preparation for the inagural Formula One gurners championship
Just a Panel. Debrief is at 7.
Just the panel, debrief is at 7pm
Just a panel. Not sure these 3pm kick offs work when no one really knows it.
Thanks Journeyer
Hahaha! He looks like he disfigured his jaw or something.
one-off wasn't it?
must've been some biking accident.
'twas a one-off. I kinda requested for it due to my timezone. :)
Wrong thread, again.
But I don't know that do I?
It depends what you'd want really. I have ones like Linkification that converts image links on a webpage to showing the actual image so you don't have to select, copy, paste etc.
Plus Adblock is mega useful for stopping popups and adverts appearing on any page which as you can imagine is so good if you dont want to be reminded about buying things everywhere.
Others like fasterfox ca improve the speed of Firefox's loading times, I sometimes use twitterFox for twitter obviously as a clinet in the background, SplitBrowser to create a split in 1 browser of one or more tabs (say you want to read comments and watch video at ame time for sidepodcast shows), but there's so so so so many possibilities, thousands at the official site:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox
Anyone else notice who is currently 2nd overall in Fantasy Racers...?
She must have stolen Honda's book. Sandbagging all of 2008....
We all have. :) Mr C was shocked out of his mind.
yeah I know. that's why I'm asking. I'm too lazy to go through all. :)
Oooh, might look at that.
i forgot.
damn.

I've just realised the time for the start of Malaysia.
10 am! What on earth are they thinking. Do they know that I have football matches that kick off at 11?
mclaren-esque.
This is getting silly
it really is.
:D :D
We could - depending on how things go during the debrief.
If we do 10K a weekend, does that mean 200K+ for the whole season ALONE? :O
In a good way. :)
'tis only quality when I do well. Which I clearly didn't. D'Oh! :D
I find it very difficult to keep up .. you press post and by the time your comment appears, you have missed another 10
How good is your maths? It would only be 170k ;)
By the way, according to the list, your hosting the panel next week.
This happens during the live race? Hmmm... Maybe there should be a 'slow mode'? Kinda like what happens in the justin chat rooms?
You have to consider non-race weekends too. :)
I have adblock plus, no script, downthemall, readitlater, foxytunes and morningcafe
Yep, Alia is BlogF1's top commenter. The stats are on the Archive page, but you have to scroll down, down, down a bit further to below the monthly listings (v6.5 does address this issue).
ooh foxytunes.... Forgot to install that when i got my new laptop, completely forgot... thanks for reminding ;)
I'd stay there :P Normally its fine but when the comments come at me too quickly I give up
Says who? I never agreed to this. I demand an investigation. I may even protest. :D
Hang on, let me check da Wiki.
No script gives me some issues on some pages so I switched it off
hmmm. that could be an issue.
a solvable one though, leave it with me, but something like "down arrow", could load a comment and queue the rest until you press it again. read them in your own time, so to speak.
pls yell if you have issues, we're making it up as we go along and we learn and fix as we can.
i have a system. I click reply on the most recent comment , then the pending button and scroll down until I find the reply window, cancel it and read up from there. If it's too busy I click reply after pending and then scroll down to find the old reply window. Does that make any sense?
yeah, especially when commenting races, i'm half asleep and am only typing one hand, so have 10 comments building up whilst im writing
Oh. Yeah. I remember now. :) I may have to pass next week and do the following one. I'll confirm tomorrow though.
that could also work.
there's been a massive jump in comments between brazil and this weekend. unexpected, but we'll improve though.
understood.
Thanks. As I say, normally it's all great and I use the pending thing to slow it down if necessary, its only an issue when there are loads of people making frequent comments
The only unresolvable for me was the upload thingie of drop.io
so, is no-one using lclt during races?
Is it normal for DD to be on it's knees when holding about 8000 comments? :)
I may need to restart it, d'ya think?
lclt is the only thing for me to use during races and live streaming.
i would. but it doesn't work for me half the time :(
bloody hell!
I do
Rarely use it at all these days
When catching up I prefer old skool single page
I did, although I forgot to actually comment so I was just following. I find LCLT slightly faster, and I don't get any noise from any other rogue comment for a different thread.
k.
i can see why doohickey doesn't work, the page locks when you're typing. that doesn't happen in lclt. will have to improve the reliability.
Separate window for video plus DD for me
no worries, you were one of about 300+ lurkers. as long as people find it useful it's all good :)
Me too
It just wont let me post the comment. i've had a few different error messages and just kinda gave up with it on friday :(
300 lurkers? really? wow.
Its basically like Red Bull, can be great, but it gets that odd gremlin to happen a bit.
fair enough. that highlights a flaw in lclt, because doohickey isn't optimised for races. probably won't be because of the way it locks the page when responding.
we has a big think this week.
DD currently using more RAM on my machine than FF3 :)
will check stats properly tomorrow. i think less people than the brazil race, but many, many more than melbourne 2008 ;)
Maybe we just need educating as to which is the best system to use for each situation
so we need an lclt desktop app too?
wow...
here's a Q for you Mr C. Are you able to tell how many people use firefox, chrome, DD, etc?
I'd love that if its possible.
lclt just isn't 'long' enough for me so requires more scrolling.
Only holds about 5 comments viewable at once
can do. never been bothered to look.
are you interested in today, during the race or just in general?
why don't you like the lclt?
it's resizable?
I've been sitting around on my bum for too long today. Going out for a bit of a walk. Catch you all in time for the debrief.
hehe :) how many people were around for melbourne '08 race? i can imagine about 10? i think i even missed commenting for the race...
just in general. Was thinking about it earleir today (no idea why)
I have!
Hmmm, RG, I am in 308th with the same amount of points you have.... Perhaps I can sort of guess as to who you had as drivers on your team? Can I assume that you had 2.2 million of your budget unspent?
it's a size issue with me, its a lot narrower and I feel I need to wear reading glasses when I use it
gimmie 5, i'll ask google.
I go away to post couple of comments elsewhere and come back to 55 new comments.
Erm, I had the two BMW's, the two Toyotas and Vettel.
huh? can we haz screengrab?
ahhh, righto. that's much fixable.
Already on the case
Could help to show more comments on a screen as well.
I use the same system
I use the lclt during races or during shows where all the comments are on one thread.
This is the whole screen of a 20" display
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/dd-vs-lclt-jpg
DD comments outweigh lclt
the checkbox top right does the same as the pending button. and it has a ctrl+f shortcut (on some browsers). it never moves. would that help?
I use lclt if there's anything embedded.
understood. we shall fix. maybe not for malaysia, but hopefully china. keep the suggestions coming.
No because then it doesn't tell you anymore how many new comments and when you uncheck it you still loose where you were reading last
I also tend to use a separate Safari window for embedded video. Don't know why, it started as an experiment during the bad buffering days and it just stuck
broswer stats for lukeh:
firefox: 45.56%
ie: 34.73%
safari (includes dd): 10.56%
chrome: 4.8%
Mark Webber imitating the front of his car after Kovaleinen hit him!
it should tell you? does a count not appear?
ok, point taken.
Quite surprised at that.. thought firefox would have less and chrome a bit more actually. I just find little things like that geekily interesting :D
That's sandbagging of Mclaren proportions, is that!
I have the video in a separate window so that I can have the maximum comment reading space.
Would have thought ie would be closer than that.
Where did the other IE users go? :-/
Le Mans weekend? I won't be here though so all my random posts will be missing!
DD also needs a ctrl F search function, that's it's biggest downfall against normal doohickey, for me
Apart from it's lack of memory ;)
to firefox? :)
tried again and this time it did. Sorry
same here. It handles bulk comments better than the doohickey I reckon
Blue Screen of Death? :)
lou's also just pointed out to em in that link our friends gmm in there, horribly getting my hopes up then dashing them amazingly with those simple three letters. :(
Yay. Doubt it will happen though.
Link doesn't work either
http://www.onestopstrategy.com/dailyf1news/nieuw/article/7219-Report+-+Abu+Dhabi+in+trouble,+Canada+to+sub.html
Uh-oh. GMM alert.
Sidepodcast GMM voodoo :D
http://tinyurl.com/damnyougmm
Booo, probably meant Magny Cours
That said, it did have another source.
Brazil would become the last round again.
Move along, nothing to see here...
Was quoting a local tv channel.
Local to whom, Canadians?
Yep, it looks like it.
To quotue Futurama, in relation to noticing GMM on that...
You raised my hopes and dashed them quite expertly sir! Bravo!
Canada in October would be mighty cold, though.
For those of you who like Sniff Petrol, Gareth Jones on Speed have just released their post-Melbourne GP podcast!
Given that the reason given for the surface break up is the effect of the Canadian winter going there in October is probably not a great idea.
And the Chequered Flag is out too...
Do they have snow tyres at Bridgestone?
The surface broke up not because of the cold in itself. It was the cold, followed by extreme heat, that broke the track up. The cold in itself shouldn't directly damage the track.
yup.
Sportsweek too:
potenza snow tyres:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/11/08/what-are-you-doing-during-the-off-season/
I meant race tyres ;)
That's gagging for an F1 big picture!
:)
Did anyone manage to acheive an SPC shoutout this weekend on the BBC Red Button forum or elsewhere?
Apart from Joe Saward :D
Tom Kristensen is accepting email questions on Danish TV - shall I try and get a shout out there?
no :( i tried lots of times though.
red button emails were a disappointment.
oooh yes!
Give it a go, the challenge was mentioned a couple of weeks ago, not sure if anyone remembered
Resau des Sports
Lou, have you bought a BrawnGP hat yet?
I was thinking of getting one, they're bound to change significantly by season end and increase in rarity & value
they don't have any merchandise yet do they? i thought Henri Lloyd are doing it?
Actually, I can't find any merch on their site
Agreed - especially if the Virgin buyout pushes through.
lol i'll get something the moment i find out about it though :) i'm hoping for a nice black jumper with a small Brawn GP on the side.... that would be lovely..
Available June 2009!!
http://www.grandprixproducts.com/files/prods.asp?c=109&d=27
ah man i have to wait till june?!...
actually... if i get to go to the GP..... hm........
Good to see Firefox used more than IE!
So, Williams protested against Red Bull & Ferrari's sidepods and then dropped it. Is this correct?
I think I shall plug the big picture today, seeing as it's always Mr C who does it:
http://www.f1bigpicture.com
I think I know at least one person who'll like this one. :)
saturday, yes.
Yes, "in the interests of the sport". Trying to drive a point across to RBR and Ferrari as well.
I'll try then - it will be in Danish though!
IE figures have been dropping steadily across the internet for some time now :)
I'd quite like a Brawn cap, but by June 09 it's gonna be covered with the Virgin logo, so I think I might skip it.
Sidepodcast in discerning browser taste shocker!
That could be amusing
Yeah, that's a relief, especially to us web designers.
My thoughts exactly!
Hello new wallpaper
When I grow up I want to be just like DC!
Here's what I'd do:
Buy a white cap, bring it to a shop and get them to print the Brawn GP logo (which you can get a JPEG file on most forums) on top of the cap. :D
nah, i'd have to get it embroidered, it'd look better
I prefer the plain white with a black marker & highlighter version ;)
Hmm, do I eat now or wait until after Debrief, it could be a long one with aftershow talk
Are we still on track for 7?
Buy the black marker and highlighter at a bookstore and do it yourself. :P
awwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!! That's amazing!!! hehehe :D :D :D (seriously you need a smiley with a bigger... erm... smile)
That's amazing.... i love it! aw!!
It's made me all emotional again. best.weekend.ever!
Not quite. Eat away.
Indeed
Loves it!
aw i wish Brawn released bigger photographs... they are no longer as big as my desktop so i can't have one pic as my wallpaper :( the honda ones were massive..
Ta, will do.
Penne Bologniase with chopped chillis
Hey have a reference - could be hugely useful for me to direct management decisions.
Getting sites developed that are fully IE compliant is a pain as they nearly always work in all other browsers (Chrome, Fire Fox and Opera)!
Mince pies, peas, chips and gravy. Pies were home made. Washed down with a nice ale too :-)
Anything in particular? I may be able to source something.
i do like hte picture....alot....however....rubens....could you have timed your wierd face smug grin for a worse time?!
Christine do you mind if I incorporate that picture into a wallpaper? Just to prevent any stretchy pixelation :P
i just miss flicking through the honda gallery and downloading a pic for my background tis all ;) no worries. i've made a couple of desktop wallpapers out of a few images, they are fine ;)
You do not need to ask my permission. We are not rights holders :)
Google Brawn GP - select images and then in images select large images - there are some.
My desktop has the following image
http://f1around.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/butt_braw_silv_2009.jpg
How very antipodean of you! ;)
You'd be surprised how British we can be, especially when a lot of people don't like the British!
thats sooooo my desktop now
I know how the aussies and kiwis love their pies
It's the kebab on the south!
One of many

Especially the 'pie floater'
Pie, upside down in pea soup with tomato sauce..
It's actually nicer than it sounds.
It's also responsible for a lot of green vomit around the city centres...
And no, we don't have it in Kiwiland...
Here in SA we can be a bit British, even though we secretly believe they are only just better than americans.
ps this is a joke - it really is British and American governments that have historically been disliked.
eeeeekk! yay!
he should sooo start his own podcast! :D
http://www.jensonbutton.com/mp3/090329-01.mp3
So from it i gather that they knew they had a significant margin over the rest of the field before they even came to Melbourne.... he says something about not wanting to show their hand too early... so they let Williams go top of practice then? I think all the drivers should be made to do these :) i just love how happy Jenson is to talk to the press and his fans. :)
I know - my Bro-in-law is an Afrikaaner from Bloemfontein. His Dad used to go to Kyalami for the Grand Prix and was standing at the first corner the race that Tom Pryce got killed - strangely enough, they managed to hush it up from the crowd as they had no idea what was going on...
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q127/Lukehmuse/brwin.jpg
just rattled it together quickly to fit 1280x800 :)
It sounds like the car isn't sorted when running light - that's to be expected as they wouldn't have had time to test it before the start of the season...
it explains why they were so heavy in quali too.
That also may be to try and mask the true pace of the car as they know they are fast...
I am English-speaking but have more German, Xhosa and Afrikaans speaking friends than English-speaking. I actually only know one Brit personally!
On the Tom Pryce accident - I was also there and frankly I am glad they did hush it up. However, we all knew in our hearts what the situation was. Sorry I do not want to think about it any more.
yeah... that too..
Thanks Bassano Clapper for the Browser break down link. Sadly still too many IE users for us to ignore!
no need to ignore ie8, tis much better.

The Australian GP in Pictures...
F1rejects have an interview with HWNSNBM! :D *clicks*
I love their perspective on the sport - they don't take anyone seriously!
I couldn't listen to it when I was at work - spent too long laughing.
I wonder who the Reject of the Race is? Vettel? Ferrari?
Bourdais is too obvious of a choice (again)
Is he who they chose? Surely it had to be Heikki? :D
It's Piquet for me. The lad is so useless that he doesn't know how to keep his brakes and tyres warm while under the safety car!
Ok I have sound and vision
for what?
I don';t see a thread yet though :S
It went too quite so I thought I would stir it up but only you replied. Nothing to see here
Using the live page, then?
oh....
Trust me, I went to the live page.
Damn you!
he's messing with our minds ;)
Post is just coming.
*refers steven to the futurama quote I posted earlier*
me too... lol
Never do that again.
lets be honest, we are all pretty tired so it's easy to do :)
I thought everyone had left to go elsewhere and not told me
From Planet-Hamilton (soon to be renamed Planet-Button):
Ooooh. Reject of the race... wasn't even at the race. ;)
I wish the show after the race was on the iplayer, i missed it :(
Who then?
Ahhh... Methinks I know who it is. Is it the guy who said he had too much work to be bothered to go? :)
Is it not as some sort of video feature on the BBC Sport website?
Bernie?
Its a mystery! I'm not skipping ahead to spoil it :)
Theres bits, but not the whole show :(
For me, Nakajima and Piquet both need their P45s
Nope.
So live show now and panel later? I need to know as my 5yo wants my computer back
Panel is done.
Ah! The company that sold the team who won today - Honda!
Yeah, I forgot it was an early panel too :(
That car would not have won if it was a Honda.
I just noticed that Darren Heath's weekly big picture hasn't changed for nearly two weeks.
Even so, they'd have been 2004-competitive, I'd think. And with Ross at the helm...
Anyway, off to the debrief now.
Ah. I forgot it was early this week. Never mind, I've been on enough lately.
Just listened back to last week's show. That was great fun and it also shows that my messing around with Pro Walkman and mic was worth it :)
Maybe its especially big :D
What about as a Gonda?
aww :(
wow that's good :)
I think Christine meant it's over, rather than edited. Maybe not
Lou, this might be useful for you: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636
Did anyone see the Observer Sport today? Am I alone in thinking the photo on the front page looks a bit like Jenson and Rubens (it's actually David Beckham and Wayne Rooney - sorry guys).
Just you
http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/2009/mar/29/sport/news
ok Pink Floyd have convinced me not to do any assignment work. If this is handed in wednesday late I blame them.
So unmotivated to do it... it doesn't even relate to my course... grr. :(
