We are at Tuesday already, which means it's time for another daily post, and that means more links and news to keep you going. The good news is that this weekend's Debrief is edited, so if you haven't already, you can hear the condensed version. Meanwhile, here's what's going on:

  • Martin Whitmarsh has said that of all the team, he feels like he really needed this win more than most. Having taken over from Ron, Whitmarsh has seen the McLaren's lapped and slow, so he's probably right. It's about time he got his moment of glory on the podium.
  • Valencia have asked the FIA to think of the fans with regards to the Renault penalty. They know that a vast majority of their visitors will only be there to see a certain Spanish driver, and if he's not racing, it's going to seriously affect the turnout. The FIA won't listen, but will Bernie?
  • Finally, don't forget about Sidepodradio! I have written another update with more details, and if you're not involved yet, why not? There is plenty you can do from a simple phone call or donation, to turning up on the day and commenting, to hosting a show. You'll find a role that suits you.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. Keep us up to date with any news you spot over the next 24 hours, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

That is without doubt the dumbest comment I have ever heard in F1 and that is saying something. A team is suspended for breaching safety regulations but should be allowed to race because the fans would be upset.

It may well be stupid, but we will see just how much sway the commercial side of the sport has. We saw what happened there last year when Alonso was punted out on lap 1.

we also heard the argument (maybe from vodafone?), that lewis shouldn't be benched after the melbourne because fans wanted to see him race.

it wouldn't be the first time, commercial discussions outweigh everything else. as stupid and wrong as that sounds.

It does seem rather silly that Lewis didn't get banned for cheating and Renault get banned for human error...

It's one of the advantages of using alcohol as fuel. You just chuck lots of water at it. At least now you can see the flames which wasn;t the case before.

You lucky girl! Try not to find coverage of either Jos Verstappen's Pit lane fire at Hockenheim, 1994 or Gerhard Berger's crash/fire at Imola in 1989. This was nothing in comparsion...

If you had a year out of your normal routine, where you didnt have to worry about money (i.e mortage, food, essentials all paid for).

    What would you do?

  • Joe in Fla28/07/2009 at 00:43

I'd never thought of following the F1 thing, that would be pretty awesome

The races I have been to are the biggest and best parties I have ever been to. Why, did you win the lottery or something?

  • Jon Waldock28/07/2009 at 00:45

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 00:45

If you had a year out of your normal routine, where you didnt have to worry about money (i.e mortage, food, essentials all paid for).

    What would you do?

Travel. There is a lot of world out there and you should try and see as much of it as possible.

I really wish in my early 20s I had taken a couple of years out and travelled. I should have just travelled and done bar work or something wherever I was.

  • Joe in Fla28/07/2009 at 00:47

If you had a year out of your normal routine, where you didnt have to worry about money (i.e mortage, food, essentials all paid for).

    What would you do?

    That's easy for me:

    1) Go to all the f1 Races on the calender that year ==> getting the best possible vantage points to watch the race live from ==> like the roof of the that hotel in Monaco so I can get that clasic shot from above the hairpin...

    2) Get a Commerical PIlot Rating. Handy to get the pilot's seat on a 60 year old Lancaster Bomber, as well as similiar WWII aircraft at the local flying museum.

    3) Go diving and get some super specialized gear and training (Rebreatehrs) so that cool places like Bikini Atoll become possible.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 01:13

    That's easy for me:

If the budget will stand it do as many once in a lifetime things as possible.

    Go drive an F1 car

Jump out of an aeroplane etc - not the one you are flying though

    etc

  • Jon Waldock28/07/2009 at 01:19

Actually, I have not been around for a while because I have been keeping either the diver girlfriend happy or the country happy forfilling my duties to Military Service, but I have fired a few unnoticed messages at strange times in the morning (GMT time)....

Hungary did confirm to me that English Broadcasters are now hopeless if there is an English Driver in the lead. I almost thought that Hamilton won the World Championship at Hungary, the way the commentators where going on. So I turned off the TV in disgust after Hamilton crossed the line and took the girl diving.

Er...... by the way, I did not catch who came in second, third, and forth. If I went by either ITV or the BBC, I would guess ==> Hamilton's father, Hamilton's brother and Nicole what's her name again....

It seems that Singapore is having some trouble selling tickets. From the Singapore GP website:

Since the first of 13 categories of early bird tickets were sold out on 22 April, ticket sale has been progressing steadily. Only the Padang, Pit, Stamford, Turn 1 and Turn 3 Grandstands are still offering early bird pricing with discounts of between 11 to 20%.

Note that these are all but one of the major grandstands - only the bay grandstand is missing. The prices of the seats at Pit, Turn 1, and Turn 3 in particular are the most expensive seats on the circuit, early bird or not.

“Although these grandstands had recently exhausted their allocation of early bird tickets we decided to keep these remaining areas open and have one collective cut off date on July 31. As these prices offer significant savings fans will enjoy a few more days to take advantage of these offers,” said Michael Roche, Executive Director of Singapore GP Pte Ltd.

Read between the lines: the organizers knew no one would be crazy enough to buy the remaining (very pricey) tickets at their regular prices, so they decided to keep the early bird prices in an effort to get more people to buy early and avoid half-empty stands.

It seems that Singapore is having some trouble selling tickets.

meanwhile, the tickets are ready for August 5 dispatch ...

comparing with last year, the tickets are a bit cheaper (early bird, weaker Sing dollar), same hotel costs me a bit less, but the plane ticket costs double ...

Why is the plane more expensive? Isn't it a bit odd, given it's going to happen the same time this year as last?

BTW, will you be dropping by the BSB concert? I'm sure Amy and Christine would appreciate it. ;)

A team is suspended for breaching safety regulations but should be allowed to race because the fans would be upset.

The FIA have confirmed that only the team is banned. If the drivers can find drives elsewhere, they're free to race at Valencia.

I just went to put my bottle of un-named fizzy cola in the fridge, and I dropped it. It rolled along the floor with me chasing after it, like a loser. And of course, now it's gone all Elvis on me.

What a rubbish start to a day!

yeah, this is much later than I bought my tickets last year, and they certainly weren't "early bird!"

    Boo, neither.

Considering those going get better musical acts than last year, the prices are a pretty good bargain, as long as you're not too bothered about it being the 2nd F1 night race, rather than the 1st.

i was just thinking the same thing.

it would be awesome if Ferrari signed alonso as a one-race 3rd driver. if that's at all possible.

and is it only me to think that if we get a massa/alonso line up we'll really be getting a hamilton/alonso all over again?

P.S. i'm talking about massa as if he's fine and well because i really want him to be fine and well (positive energy in the air)

    Valencia have asked the FIA to think of the fans {Original comment}

I'm sure the FIA is thinking of the fans. It knows a lot of people will be justifiably upset if it condones behaviour that could endanger competitors - and that it would be in extreme bother if any driver is injured through a lack of concern about safety on the FIA's part.

  • Alianora La Canta28/07/2009 at 10:16

    It does seem rather silly that Lewis didn’t get banned for cheating and Renault get banned for human error… {Comment #6}

That's because Lewis was banned for one race (the one he'd just completed). Giving Fernando the same penalty would have been completely pointless because he'd already retired by the time the decision was made, so the ban had to be for a future race.

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 10:17

Absolutely. If the wheel had killed somebody then you wouldn't expect them to be lenient. The FIA *have* to act with the same strength as though it had killed somebody. It seems odd but that is the consistent approach here.

Because so many fewer people are flying and the price of fuel's increased, so the people still flying must pay a lot more for the priviledge. This applies to most flights irrespective of start and end points.

on and off. i watched more when alonso was beating him.

but f1 made me very miserable at the time. and even the thought of him returning makes me very angry. i literally couldn't watch.

    good question.

In fact, their last good reserve driver was... Felipe Massa (in 2003).

  • Amy28/07/2009 at 11:50

Australian news fail: this article is linked internally on the website with the headline "I'll be back" says Massa which clearly he hasn't said. The only thing remotely close is a quote from his wife that sounds badly translated from Portuguese.

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 11:53

It was that thing from the Daily Show I linked to the other week. Where their reporter was talking to the editor of the Wall Street Journal and he said, "so this is yesterday's newspaper, where is todays?".

"No," came the reply, "that's today's newspaper".

"But all of the stories in here are from yesterday. Point me out one thing in here that happened today."

    "There isn't anything."

    "Right so where's today's newspaper."

The thing is that I could understand somebody saying, "I really like the feel of a magazine and I like to read it in bed and after a long days computing I don't want to look at another screen". I could understand that if the magazine was about knitting, design, style, lifestyle, etc. I might not feel that way myself but I could just about see it.

But for a news magazine or a magazine reporting on stuff that changes this fast even if it is in the form of considered articles. Paper is out of date before you've finished the print run.

Their can be relevance in what i will badly describe as 'digestive media'. the focus shouldn't be anywhere near breaking news. But reflections, ideas and in depth features like interviews and analysis that aren't too time dependent could be relevant, perhaps even better once they are separated from the event.

    They just need to adapt.

    (still not here)

I don't bother with the "news" in F1 Racing but I like the features regardless of when I read them. How can you not like Nelson Piquet doing the readers questions and coming off as more arrogant than I ever thought possible?

  • Scott in Italy28/07/2009 at 12:12

australian news is pretty bad at changing quotes. i noticed they started doing it at least 10 years ago, and if you go inside the full article you see clearly that "He'll be back" can become a headline of "I'll be back", but if they run it without quotations then ethically it's okay. I don't get that, but hey, it seems to be standard practice in oz, and probably around the world.

  • Janine28/07/2009 at 12:15

  • Stuart C28/07/2009 at 12:19

Apropos your columnic kerfuffle, surely this is a case of two people sitting in proximity to one another, both contributing to the same title, having a "What's your column going to be about, mate?" discussion so as not to tread on one another's toes. The initiator of the chat then decides to flag forward to his colleague's column. Simple as. No shady attempt by management to part you with green stuff involved.

i suspect the newsagent won’t care. might be a rather quiet protest.

Depends on the temperament of the shopkeeper. When I was a student a mate and I were ejected from a local newsagent for reading the magazines without buying them. We gave it a week and then let off a couple of stinkbombs in there. No great change in world affairs eventuated but it gave some pleasure (not to the shopkeeper, of course).

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 12:36

i suspect the newsagent won't care. might be a rather quiet protest.

This reminds me of a very strange moment on TV when the prime minister at the time John Major's brother was on Have I Got News For You. He complained to Ian Hislop about the price of Private Eye going up. Ian said that it was still very reasonably priced. Terry said it didn't matter he just photocopied the pages he cared about anyway, it was much cheaper that way.

  • RCC28/07/2009 at 12:39

    It's a good question... I am mad?

I am very nervy of being tied to one vendor as I was with iTunes before they started doing the Plus thing. But now I'm not sure... Is it really safe to buy from iTunes?

Is that what you mean or are you complaining about La Roux? ;)

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 12:52

what do you get with cd's that you don't with itunes? aside from a bunch of packaging you have to store.

Nothing. It's not rational. It isn't.

The big problem for me is admitting defeat. I have a large CD collection. Lets not do numbers :) I haven't even ripped them all. And at the moment if I think where is that album I can go to the collection and find it. But if it might be somewhere else eg virtual only then I feel it might get very confusing. And there is something social about it as well. People when they come over look at your bookshelves, cd shelves, dvd shelves and decide about you. Or maybe that's just in my head ;)

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 12:59

    you disappoint me :)

It's only recently now that I've got my apple tv connected to my stereo that I can play music downstairs without CDs. And even then my Apple TV can't fit all of the music on it.

you weren't an idiot for 17 years. but buying "friends" for your phone and then order physical cd's could be classed as... confused.

  • Joe28/07/2009 at 13:17

I buy individual tracks from iTunes. But when I am buying an album I want to buy and Album and that still, in my head, means buying a CD.

Yeah I don't understand buying music but nnot having a physical copy.

Personally I just use torrents for music I wantg to download. I do buy cds sometimes, because I love having the artwork and case and so on, and the album can feel more special to me that way.

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 13:22

you weren't an idiot for 17 years. but buying "friends" for your phone and then order physical cd's could be classed as... confused.

See the thing is that I don't have the storage to store all of my movies digitally so I buy movies physically and rent movies on iTunes. For music I still buy the CD. For TV shows it's complicated. I own the West Wing on DVDs, I would buy Friends on iTunes because I want to watch it on my phone.

At the moment the hard disk constraint is more expensive to deal with than the physical storage constraint, but only just.

I have a 2x 1TB hard disks in my main server. They are getting full :(

I do actually quite a lot. And insanely enough many DVDs are available on Amazon for around the same price as you can rent them on iTunes.

i guess we have different viewing habits.

i only rent movies from itunes, except for a single test purchase i bought the first time that i could (coyote ugly i think). movies for me tend to be a mood thing, and i don't think i've seen the same movie twice in any twelve month period.

by the time i come to watch the film again, it's likely a brand new higher quality version has been released anyhow. renting is perfect. before itunes that meant a trip to blockbuster. i don't think i'll ever own another movie, but who knows.

as for music. i have some ripped cd's but i never tagged them correctly and would now prefer to but drm free from itunes, because i know there are no glitches and the artwork will all be correct.

i don't own any cd's anymore, and will never by music that way again.

have tried audio books, but audible quality sucks. i'd buy a kindle if they'd sell them here.

  • Christine28/07/2009 at 13:32

    Me first.

i don't own any cd's anymore, and will never by music that way again.

forgot to add. tv shows are all now from itunes, even one that can be found freely on bbc/c4. i'd like to rent those too, but i don't think you can at the moment.

  • me28/07/2009 at 13:33

    Lets hope this is true...

Doctors say that Massa has now opened his left eye and initial indications are that there is no damage

    It is! http://www.ferrari.com/English/News/Pages/090728_F1_More_positive_signs.aspx

"His condition is improving quickly and constantly. He is more and more awake and reactive," Dino Altman, his personal doctor, said. "He spoke to several people today, using three different languages, replying always in a coherent way. He's also progressing with his physiotherapy very well. He opened his left eye and confirmed that he can see with it. As far as the near future is concerned we have to be cautious, but I have to say that also today there are very positive signs."

  • Amy28/07/2009 at 13:34

erm. I know greetings, the names for members of the family, the colours, (mostly because you learn them in songs at primary school.) I can also count to 100 and tell you the names of various random words like water, bathroom and food.

  • Christine28/07/2009 at 13:58

    why not?

Because it's clearly wrong. Elephants are elephants, pandas are pandas.

  • Amy28/07/2009 at 13:59

    for amy.

eheh I had to download a Maori language pack when I was at uni because I did a paper on New Zealand legal history and a lot of my essays had maori words so I had to have the vowels with the line above them.

  • Scott in Italy28/07/2009 at 13:59

Because it's clearly wrong. Elephants are elephants, pandas are pandas.

what about red pandas? do they count as wanna be pandas? how bout flying foxes?

  • Christine28/07/2009 at 14:00

what about red pandas? do they count as wanna be pandas? how bout flying foxes?

Red pandas are apparently pandas but they are rarely cute. I know not about flying foxes. Surely they are foxes?

  • Scott in Italy28/07/2009 at 14:01

I know not about flying foxes. Surely they are foxes?

more like bats. nothing like pandas but i was just thinking of animals pretending to be something they are not.

  • Amy28/07/2009 at 14:01

Can you do the Haka? Or Catch a whale?

I know quite a few haka from my school days, and I also know a song about a whale. They teach you the songs but they never teach you the translations or what they mean so to be honest I couldn't tell you what they're singing about. The only Maori song I know the English translation to is the National Anthem :D

  • Jon Waldock28/07/2009 at 14:01

I burnt myself on the oven, whilst holding a kebab metal stick thing (to see if hte cake is cooked) and on reaction of the heat, i stabbed myself.

the space shuttle will be undocking from the ISS in a couple of hours. If you've never bothered to go outside at night and look for the space shuttle, tonight and tomorrow should be good nights to do it because the will stay close together and look like they're chasing each other across the sky. To find out where and when you can see them, go here, and look for Sighting Opportunities over on the left.

welcome to my life. you get half a second of english and think "oh sweet" and then they start talking over the top and i can't clearly hear either of them. i'd rather if they talk italian that they just silence the english and give me a chance :) if i'm, at home for the f1 i watch the press conferences on the swiss networks because they talk quieter and i can still hear the english.

I'd chose subtitles over dubbing every day, and all my foreign friends say the same. Although, all my foreign friends speak English so its no wonder they want to hear the original language.

i would to, but on a live broadcast it's too hard. even without worrying about the language issue. turn on the subtitles for hearing impaired people and see how behind they are for a live show.

Subtitles over dubbing every time. The dubbers tend to lose the emotion of the original dialogue.

last year on italian MTV, some of the shows had subtitles, but left the audio in the original (American) english, so it was great for me to follow a show and pick up bits of italian. now those same shows (in repeat mode) are dubbed. pity :(

  • Scott in Italy28/07/2009 at 14:36

ahh true, forgot about the live thing.

my preference given digital tv these days, would be to provide different language options, one that keeps the original language and one that has the translation into italian (as default obviously). you could do it for the press conferences, but it'd be a bit of work and the italians are scared of that ;)

I haven’t even ripped them all. And at the moment if I think where is that album I can go to the collection and find it.

Do you have your CDs in alphabetical order? Since moving house (three years ago now) I haven't got round to putting mine back thus, and therefore can never find the one I want.

more a shock that something actually had Finnish subtitles, it's not the most common language to find on a movie :D I think I need to move to the homeland and learn the language once I arrive ;)

Nearly of of the DVD's in Region 2 (Europe) have Finnish subtitles I think

i think you should get there with some basic language - it'll be hard to find an internet plan if you can't read finnish. unless it's all in english...

I worked in Madrid for a month or two, many moons ago

Star Trek, The Next Gen was tres funny in Spanish

Though they still said "Mister Worf" :)

Do you have your CDs in alphabetical order? Since moving house (three years ago now) I haven't got round to putting mine back thus, and therefore can never find the one I want.

I have now managed to get them back in alphabetical order after a misguided attempt by Katherine to arrange them by colour!

All of our books are *still* arranged by colour!

  • Scott in Italy28/07/2009 at 14:51

    run away!

that's what we thought about the guy who started it in Sydney. We thought he was a little strange, It seems he was misunderstood given the world's reaction to the concept. When I came here and saw people doing it at Christmas time, I thought the world was way too small and similar.

It's a song she wrote that didn't fit anywhere else. The band originally wrote the bit we all know and couldn't make it into a song - so they combined the two parts apparently...

What she is saying is he wants to drive. It is the same way politicians talk. Don't commit but get the message out.

She is Schumacher's personal spokesperson. She says what he wants said. Bear in mind Weber was asked before the implications of the accident were clear.

This is a clear statement from Schumacher that he wants to race.

Up to Ferrari. I guess it depends whether he wants to come back and do the rest of the season or if he is bored and thinking of a full time come back.

If I was running Ferrari I would put him in the car. It would be interesting to see how he would cope when he doesn't have his hand picked team around him. Of course he did say on Top Gear that he may have the possibility to drive for Brawn next year so this may be a warm up for that.

NASA has shuffled the schedule on me again. I guess their press kit was not updated after they decided that they needed to leave the ISS a day early to make way for the unmanned Russian Progress craft.

The hatches between the shuttle and the ISS have been closed and the docking latches will open at 1:26pm Eastern / 6:26pm UK.

After undocking the shuttle will do a flyaround of the station which is always very cool to watch.

At 2:41pm Eastern/7:41pm UK the shuttle will start to move away from the ISS

Just read about Piquet and Briatore on AUTOSPORT. Now that is an article that made me giggle, such a ridiculous relationship between the two, plus Piquet's comments always amuse me as much as I dislike Flav.

  • Alison28/07/2009 at 17:09

I love Piquet's facial expressions whenever a reporter asks him about Flav. At least he's smart enough to keep his mouth shut on the whole.

I would have trouble picking between the Hakk, the Raikk and the Kov. I guess I’d have to do it by ‘number of world championships’ but Heikki in 3rd place? Blasphemy!

You are right, Amy. It is Blasphemy that Kovie's rated in third. He should be excluded from the list! Hakkinen, Kimi, Keke Rosberg, Mika Salo and J. J. Letho....

NASA is insane. They are undocking the shuttle during orbital night so it will be dark and the pictures on NASA TV will be rubbish. What an incredibly stupid decision.

Sorry if it has already been posted/mentioned

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 17:22

Oh goodness... has anything else been suggested for the sidepodmellodrama? is it still going ahead?

Christine suggested that we should base it on one of the new teams. I then suggested that the outline story should be Manor building a superb car (with a little help from Donnelly) and finding the Czech driver no-one had heard of. The Czech wins the first race.

If we use that each individual sketch can feed into that story or someone can come up with other ideas.

i think we are going to struggle to do this on time. Next year if we do this can we do it onthe second or third Sunday of the break and that gives us a free weekend to prepare?

I agree, i am slightly worried.

I could bang out a script, but i cant gaurentee it will be funny.

The other option is to do the who's line thing...

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 17:28

    The shuttle has undocked succesfully

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 17:31

I agree, i am slightly worried.

My gut feel is we should do the melodrama as a separate thing on its own in a couple of weeks. If we are going to do it we really want to do it properly and there is so much work in that one show with writing, and then recording all the parts and then stitching it all together.

I didn't realise the who's line had been dropped. That is pretty much unscripted so we should do that if enough people volunteer.

Anyone else have any views on these?

  • 2008 SPC-land Fantasy Racers Champions Jordan F128/07/2009 at 17:31

don’t worry – i think it’s more likely that alonso will drive that car than schumi will.

Especially as Schumacher is still recovering from his Superbike whoopsie

Depends if Ferrari want to keep Massa to complete the season doesn't it? If Ferrari is honest about Massa being such an important part of Ferrari, and if Massa is on the way to a complete recovery (including his eye), then there is nothing wrong with Ferrari picking up PK, jr to keep Massa's seat warm for a few races, like Salo did when Schumacher was injuried. Now if Alsono or worse yet, Schuie steps into Massa's cockpit ==> what's the promise that Massa's coming back to Ferrari? I for one, doubt it.

I expect thats why Ferrari are talking about taking their time over the decision. Their choice for 1 or 2 races will undoubtedly be different for their choice for the rest of the season. Furthermore, I can't see it hurting to wait until the Renault picture for valencia emerges further. If alonso is really going to end up sat on the sidelines then Ferrari would have to be mad not to consider getting him in even if only for a single race... The PR benefit, amount of memorabillia they'd sell over the weekend not to mention the fact that Alonso may do well would all cross their minds

The question of whether Renault will allow it still looms large though

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 17:39

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 17:43

The question of whether Renault will allow it still looms large though

There is no way Alonso can drive for Ferrari in Valencia. There are 101 reasons why it can't happen. For one the team is suspended for an incident involving his car including the fact that he kept driving knowing the wheel was going to come off. How can the FIA let him hop in another car?

Are Ferrari really going to give him free access to all the technical information he would need to be able to get the best out of the car so he can take that back to Renault? Are they going to let him wander about their garage and sit in on their meetings so that he can feed info back to Renault?

No but what you can do is stick it in the oven with all the normal juicy stuff you cook chicken in and add mint (herb not sauce) to that, If mint sauce is too strong for you chuck some of the herb in your gravy.

lamburger no need for a bun, couscous with red peppers and some tatziki on the side. Use a griddle pan to cook the burger and the peppers.

That reminds me of Russell Kane's joke about the social appartide in London :D

"Who hasn't been to New York?! Throw your tatziki at him!"

    YES

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 18:08

"Steven did you [insert any imaginable combination of words] the ISS?"

    YES

I think probably would be closer than yes but there is a really good chance I did.

There are some great pics of the Earth in the background of the ISS or shuttle. I tried to get some scren dumps to dropio but my computer just gives me solid black for everything.

The porch looks much bigger than I expected. I think someone got their inches and cms mixed up again

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 18:12

Steven did you decide to have mint sauce with your chicken dinner after watching the ISS?

No. I had lamb one day and the following day I had chicken and an opened jsr of mint sauce in the fridge so I thought a little of that can't hurt. It's how the best discoveries are made.

I've seen that before, sadly it's not an instrumental :(

It repeats part of the song over and over to create the effect of an instrumental and it doesn't sound like the actual song to me if that makes sense. I know it is the song, but I know when listening it's not a real instrumental. To be fair it does the job but I've listened to that song so muvh that I notice it so easily... which can be annoying feature to have I suppose...

Cheers though :) One day the real instrumental will turn up on the interwebs. These tv stations always have instrumentals of songs... damn them. :(

  • Alex Andronov28/07/2009 at 18:21

well now that's a story. It was only a telephone interview however. But it did mean I had her home number. But yes it's a long story and I'm actually typing while walking at the moment.

If I were Ferrari and wanted a temporary replacement for Felipe - I would use neither of my test drivers nor Michael Schumacher (too old and not enough recent F1 experience). I doubt if Flavio would allow Fernando a chance to drive for Ferrari (I know his contract might say a guaranteed drive but not for the opposition). I would hire Bourdais - recent experience with a Ferrai-engined F1 car plus he is managed by Nicholas Todt (I think) who also manges Felipe. If Bourdais is still slow we will then know he is not F1 material.

    BOOO!

NASA TV just announced that tonight it will be possible to view three independent spacecraft at the same time. If you have a sighting opportunity where you are you will see the shuttle followed by the ISS and then the unmanned Russian Progress.

Just checked sighying opportunities here and there are none.

  • Rich28/07/2009 at 19:01

Also - if he did well it would really annoy STR. :D

That would be a good reason to hire him. He is qualified to drive and probably not threatening to Kimi and could be got rid of when Felipe is better. If he does well and Kimi retires they have another option. Personally I doubt that Kimi will retire unless the rallying his addictive.

    Don’t give him any ideas.

In that case I will not share this link with him.

Someone must of already commented on this but I had to change my shirt because I made the mistake of trying to drink a cup a coffee while reading the Flavio/Piquet war of words.

There is no guessing now about PK's future. While I have found him somewhat arrogant (based on rather little apparent F1 talent) I enjoyed the way he hit back at Flavio.

They've basically written a part of the script for Sidepodmelodrama for us!

That another thing that sidepodcast needs to do is pull together all the excuses so we can make litterally, the book of excuses.

I am recording my midseason review tonight.

    #sidepodspace

Someone has moved their cheese: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/8171619.stm

At 0400 BST a weather balloon was launched 18.6 miles (30km) into the upper atmosphere, carrying a capsule containing a 300g wedge of Cheddar. But the organisers’ GPS tracking system has stopped working and now they need help to find the cheese once it lands.

Why are they sending cheese up in the first place!?

That is one of the most pointless things I have ever heard of. What kind of person wants to send chees into space when the moon is made of cheese already.

I've not been able to see twitpic all evening, all my followers on Twitter have disappeared and, worst of all, Farm Town won't work on Facebook. I think the internet hates me, at least I can still see Sidepodcast.

Evening all. Looks like Mr C can breathe easy - MSC is not likely to be racing for Ferrari again, according to his manager. Interesting that this was posted on Autosport at around 2pm but the BBC were still reporting the speculation at 6pm.

Also - for Christine, I've been asking about the Logic problems you mentioned the other day. Only one answer so far, but with regard to the unwanted silences at the beginning of tracks, I have been informed that you need to change your bounce settings.

His manager said he was 200% cetain he wont be racing yesterday. But his spokeswoman said it was possible today.

Have you tried letting air out of MrC's ball again... I doubt it would solve the logic problem, but it might provide a distraction :P

I think that is a different problem. My bounce seems to be completely confused about start and end points, as it adds about ten seconds at the start, and cuts the same off the end.

Ah, OK. Will consult again and get back to you. 10 seconds is a lot, would point to something non-obvious but hopeflly simple to fix.

So does ‘Me’ like the possibility of Schumi doing a few races?

Me personally i’m all for it! I’d love to see Alonso, Schu, Hamilton, Kimi, and Vettel all fighting for turn 1!

Alsono, Schuie, Hamilton, Kimi. Vettel, Button, and Webber all fighting for turn 1 of the next race should improve my team's (Trulli, Glock, Kubica, Heidfeld, Sutil and Brumei) standings by a factor of a 1000!

I am assuming that by turn 2 of lap 1, my worst place driver could do no worse than 13th !

What happens if a 19 year old wins in a country with higher drinking laws (for example America)? Are they still allowed to spray Champagne?

is it illegal to buy it, or illegal to consume it?

  • Chris28/07/2009 at 21:30

is it illegal to buy it, or illegal to consume it?

Well, in the UK it's illegal to do both before 18. (Although it's ok to drink with a meal from 16 onwards)

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:32

is it illegal to buy it, or illegal to consume it?

In texas, colorado and new mexico i belive its illegal to buy it on a sunday

not sure about consuming it though

  • Andy Taylor28/07/2009 at 21:33

Well, in the UK it's illegal to do both before 18. (Although it's ok to drink with a meal from 16 onwards)

Actually the minimum legal age is 5 (yes five) for consumption at home as a drink. If alcohol is used in food there is no limit. Allowing your child to become drunk is considered to be abuse.

It's nothing to do with Massa. Everything is looking good on his front, but this story isn't very good news for F1. Give me 5 mins!

    what a ridiculous tweet.

    I hate being on tenterhooks!

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:38

    what story?

Apparently Mr Noble is typing it up as we speak to be put on AUTOSPORT...

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:38

    what story?

*shrugs shoulders and makes a sound that sounds like "I dunno"*

  • me28/07/2009 at 21:38

Apparently Mr Noble is typing it up as we speak to be put on AUTOSPORT...

i see. soz, thought i'd missed a comment.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:39

Please don't let it be politics. It inevitably will.

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:39

Flav and Nels announce PPV fight in las vegas on sky box office?

Bourdais reveals his name is really Tim?

Bernie gets haircut and grows 2ft?

Gosh the possibilities. All those are possible to me.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:40

What's the odds on Carlos Ghosn threatening to pull Renault out of F1 again?

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:40

Please don't let it be politics. It inevitably will.

Unless GP1 is a go... i fear i will be disapointed.

I saw the article on Piquet/Briatore earlier today. Made me laugh. :D

  • me28/07/2009 at 21:41

autosport really a handle on this twitter thing...

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:41

What's the odds on Carlos Ghosn threatening to pull Renault out of F1 again?

Wasnt there some rumour about the Aresnal/Gazprom guy to buy a team?

Maybe the moscow trip was just a sales pitch?

  • Andy Taylor28/07/2009 at 21:41

Apparently Mr Noble is typing it up as we speak to be put on AUTOSPORT...

Perhaps it's the news that Ted Kravitz will not be reporting on F1 next year. That would be a disaster.

F1 scoop: Mutterings from the Germany suggest a big announcement on 'future strategic direction' from one of the big German F1 teams in the morning

Well, in the UK it's illegal to do both before 18. (Although it's ok to drink with a meal from 16 onwards)

that's not correct quite. An adult can give a child as you as four (this age may have changed recently but it's still low) alcohol if they are looking after them. They can't sell it to them.

That was from Noble again by the way.

  • Andy Taylor28/07/2009 at 21:43

anyways, thats impossible what with Ted walking and talking with Ted and Ted

I bet that even with an all-Ted team, EJ would still be annoying.

  • Flibster28/07/2009 at 21:43

ONE of the big German F1 teams? There's only BMW...

Depends - based in Germany or actually German?

    Toyota, Mercedes or BMW....

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:44

Maybe this is a good time for RG to be ill and not see this news...

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:44

    Toyota?

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:44

    See, it was obvious.

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:44

    Wait.... does that mean....

    ....no Ned Flanders? :(

  • Andy Taylor28/07/2009 at 21:45

    Toyota, Mercedes or BMW....

Mercedes isn't a team though, which leaves Toyota and BMW.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:46

Could it just be a simple case of "We're doing bad, so what's the point any more?"

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:46

Kubica was on the AUTOSPORT site today saying he wanted to try rallying. He may get his wish.

  • Christine28/07/2009 at 21:46

"..will announce its withdrawal from the sport at the end of this season, on Wednesday."

That's a ridiculous sentence comma or no comma.

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:47

    This doesnt make any sense.

Although basing a global marketing campaign around KERS, then not using it wasnt all that smart.

Then Merc being able to go... we won an F1 race with a hybrid... just isnt great.

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:47

That's a ridiculous sentence comma or no comma.

I got the impression the comma was for dramatic effect, as in the spokesperson was saying the sentence, turned their back, clenched there first and simply said... "On Wednesday".

That or yes, very bad grammar, stuff, thingies.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:48

I wonder if it is a co-incidence that this comes just days after all the stories about the Concorde Agreement being almost ready? Maybe a negotiating ploy.

Of course if they go this opens the door up for Prodrive or Epislon Upsadaisy

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:48

Tis a shame though. Reckon we'll see Prodrive or someone else in then?

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:49

Although basing a global marketing campaign around KERS, then not using it wasnt all that smart.

Especially as every other team was prepared to go along with a KERS ban and BMW vetoed it.

  • Jon Waldock28/07/2009 at 21:49

Tis a shame though. Reckon we'll see Prodrive or someone else in then?

I reckon we'll see an FIA law suit, they've entered into the 2010 WC.

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:50

Tis a shame though. Reckon we'll see Prodrive or someone else in then?

maybe, but i guess being in switzerland N.tech makes more sense geographicly

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:50

I wonder if Sauber will try to buy the team back and continue?

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 21:50

I wonder if Sauber will try to buy the team back and continue?

That would be super. Then get Johnny Herbert back please.

  • me28/07/2009 at 21:53

I wonder if Sauber will try to buy the team back and continue?

    gotta be worth a shot.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:53

    gotta be worth a shot.

    Would Peter want to, though?

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:55

    gotta be worth a shot.

He seemed to go to a lot of trouble to make sure the team stayed in Hinwil and that the people stayed in work when he sold to BMW. I would not be surprised if he bought it back. maybe Sauber could be next year's Brawn and RG can have a great year to look forward to.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/07/2009 at 21:55

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77398

    BMW it is then!

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:55

Could this be the first of a line of domino's?

  • Chris28/07/2009 at 21:56

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!

    Bit of a shock? ;)

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:56

    Would Peter want to, though?

It would be like Brawn. He would get it for buttons and so long as there is some sponsorship in place he has nothing to lose by buying it.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:56

Could this be the first of a line of domino's?

It's the second. Honda was the first. I am only surprised Renault wasn't second.

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:57

It would be like Brawn. He would get it for buttons and so long as there is some sponsorship in place he has nothing to lose by buying it.

With all the interest in f1 spots though this year, couldnt they get more for it elsewhere?

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 21:58

It would be like Brawn. He would get it for buttons and so long as there is some sponsorship in place he has nothing to lose by buying it.

Yeah but I mean how much influence does he have in running the team day to day? I didn't think he had much, if any at all.

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 21:58

It's the second. Honda was the first. I am only surprised Renault wasn't second.

    True.

Maybe the penalty will provide them some cover...

  • me28/07/2009 at 21:58

With all the interest in f1 spots though this year, couldnt they get more for it elsewhere?

they still have his name, wonder if he has some rights too?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/07/2009 at 21:59

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!

    Bit of a shock? ;)

Yep. See, this is what happens when you become a fan of a manufacturer team. They never repay your loyalty and it always ends in tears.

Speaking of which, how do we think Robert Kubica feels now?

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 21:59

With all the interest in f1 spots though this year, couldnt they get more for it elsewhere?

Who wants a team that is based in Switzerland?

  • Pat W28/07/2009 at 22:00

Who wants a team that is based in Switzerland?

    Lewis Hamilton.

  • Flibster28/07/2009 at 22:00

Several people around saying it's a disaster for BMW to leave.

Why? Can anyone explain it to me? Apart from 1 win, what have they achieved other than burning an awful lot of money?

    Next up - Renault

Still - Peter can now buy his team back at a knock-down garage sale price and come back. :D

  • Scott Woodwiss28/07/2009 at 22:00

Who wants a team that is based in Switzerland?

A country that despises the car with a passion, by the way.

What a wasted opportunity 2008 was for BMW, who gives up on a title chase to concentrate on the year after? whats the worst that can happen you actually win the title ahead of schedule?

I can smell a return to Le Mans/sportscars in the LMP1 class here. They did say when the ACO "threw open it's doors to F1 teams" that BMW along with Toyota were considering it.

  • Chris28/07/2009 at 22:03

    why what happened?

Nothing. Nothing at all. Not anything Lukeh's photoshoped...oops!

    Had to. :(

I was within the speed limit in a perfectly road legal car. Sadly, it was an American 440ci engine so made an awful lot of noise even at idle. :D

In a word, yes. They got the exposure they needed from the sport, which they care not for and now they're effing off!

It's not like they haven's done this before.

F1 should not have manufacturer owned teams because they always do this. Bernie and Max tried to hook them in then cancelled all the races the manufacturers wanted in their biggest markets.

  • Lukeh28/07/2009 at 22:06

    :D You're for it now!

Jenson is awesome. The Doctor is awesome. It's an awesome combination. That's my defence!

Perhaps we could have Bernie make flav grow one as a tribute?

    Or Bernie could do it?

  • Dan Brunell28/07/2009 at 22:19

I don't get it. Once the cost were supposedly coming to ensure these teams future, we might lose two manufacturers.

I wonder if it has to do with the new Concord agreement. BMW was heavily invested in using F1 as a platform for new technologies, if they are limited, why take part. Since KERS and other technologies are limited for the future, I wonder if that tipped their involvement.

I can personally see them going back to Le Mans or something like that less of an investment but yields more technological advancement or something of that nature. It is certainly not for money. BMW is doing comparatively well compared to Toyota and Renault.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 22:19

    #Giggles Made-up Media

Gerhard Berger was a BMW man for a lot of years. He quit STR at the start of the season and now BMW becomes available. Co-incidence??

I wonder if it has to do with the new Concord agreement. BMW was heavily invested in using F1 as a platform for new technologies, if they are limited, why take part. Since KERS and other technologies are limited for the future, I wonder if that tipped their involvement.

I can personally see them going back to Le Mans or something like that less of an investment but yields more technological advancement or something of that nature. It is certainly not for money. BMW is doing comparatively well compared to Toyota and Renault.

But they did Le Mans and won it though?

  • me28/07/2009 at 22:20

ought we start the kubica to take massa's seat rumours now then?

  • Nick28/07/2009 at 22:20

Just listening to the live show... Mrs C said the BMW's were freakishly slow.

I am not suggesting BMW board base their decisions solely on sidepodcast, but...

  • me28/07/2009 at 22:20

Gerhard Berger was a BMW man for a lot of years. He quit STR at the start of the season and now BMW becomes available. Co-incidence??

good luck selling STR now DM.

He needs to stay away from german moustaches for a bit ;)

  • Alison28/07/2009 at 22:21

Kubica's nowhere near charismatic enough to replace Massa.... Imagine him and Kimi in a room together, Ferrari would just fade into a shade of grey

  • Dan Brunell28/07/2009 at 22:22

But they did Le Mans and won it though?

The reason why I think that is they've been making a big stink about the current course in Formula One is that they are big into KERS and alternative technologies including better diesel technologies. I thin that fits better with Le Mans than Formula One.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/07/2009 at 22:22

    Wow... why not?

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 22:23

The thing with KERS is we only have it because BMW vetoed banning it when every other team was prepared to let it go and now their bigges rival has won a race with it.

There is no F1 race in the USA which is their biggest market and a serious chance off there being none in Germany either next season.

When theeconomy dips even slightly manufacturers run from F1 so in the current situation it is surprising that we have not lost more.

If this was the case why would they not have entered a diesel into World Touring, instead of spending the last couple of years complaining about SEAT's diesels? Something doesn't add up for me.

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 22:23

They are foing to have to build a big car to get all those drivers in it.

This from a company that still thinks having the engine at the front of the car driving the rear wheels is the ultimate configuration.

Of course the Ferrari understeers to a ridiculous extent which would probably suit him. Not so sure he would happy with the massive twitches though.

Jaime was getting grief because he had now experience of fast cars so is it right that Kubica can step straight into one?

Even with that, No one is carring the story but AUTOSPORT. Usually, reports like this spread like wildfire. I even checked Google new and Autosport is the only one with the story. AP, Reuters, or UPI have not reported it yet.

Why though, they have no raison d'etre!?

Running drivers in GP2 would be far cheaper and probably more effective.

He could use the spare change to buy up practicaly every trackside advert in F1

  • Dank28/07/2009 at 22:42

fair point. so why aren't they getting as much help as last year?

Not wanting a repeat of last year when the minnows beat their big brother is one factor, though taking Vettel out of the ecuation certainly helps. This year they're having to find their own way, ready for 2010 when they become their own constructor.

Also, if you look at the quotes in the press from Franz Tost this year, he's happy to admit they are a junior, step-up, team, whereas before they'd point-blank deny it.

  • me28/07/2009 at 22:42

I'm also quite confused. Wasn't he told they couldn't be a "customer car" after some big row/lawsuit mainly aimed at Honda?

  • Steven Roy28/07/2009 at 22:43

He could use the spare change to buy up practicaly every trackside advert in F1

This way though he gets to try young drivers in F1 and if they are any good he can switch them into the top team. If any of the RBR drivers get hurt he has race sharp drivers available. And if the Autosport rumours are to be believed he is going to put Sebastien Loeb in the car later this season without affecting the competitiveness of his top team.

To me it makes a lot of sense for top teams to have a back up.

Hmmm, Schuie at Brawn for 2010. I guess he will want to use Barrichello as the rear gunner again so I guess that we can give Button the Test/third driver role if he wants it....

Entirely up to you. The questions are just their to help you talk about your blog. The idea is to get people to read your blog so long enough to make them want to read it but not so long that you have either told them everything that is there or bored them to death.

You have to use generic meat for the sandwich though - the ham with no name.
