We're headlong into another week now, and facing several of them without races. For us here at Sidepodcast Towers, this is good as we can get round to all those things "on the list" that have been put off for breaking F1 news. However, we will endeavour to keep you entertained during the summer break. Let's start right now:

  • The replay of the live show is up and ready if you want to catch the Debrief in its unedited glory. The podcast version should be done by tonight. Apologies it was not ready on Sunday, but I was, as Rob would say, cream-crackered.
  • At the end of the live stream, we talked for a little about Sidepodradio. Don't forget to leave your voicemails for smooth transitions, sign up for a show, leave comments and questions for existing shows, and suggest a charity for our donations. It's all happening on the wiki.
  • Finally, it's also worth checking out the replay of the Parade Lap, if you weren't there to listen live. Our host Alex talked us through predictions, food, blame steven, and even an homage to a certain news network. Definitely worth a look, and maybe even a second look.

That should keep you busy for now. We'll be around if anyone has any questions about Sidepodradio, and I feel another blog post coming soon. I'll see you in the comments.

    Holiday plans?

I've had mine blown out of the water by my cousin getting married in Greece

Though I'm sure that will be fun too

  • Bassano Clapper27/07/2009 at 00:30

    Maybe not then ;)

  • Joe27/07/2009 at 00:32

Not much really. Moving to England in 2 weeks or so. Going to college there, plus my sister had her kid recently so me and mum want to be over there, and we've wanted to move for years anyway.

So no holiday plans as such.

  • Bassano Clapper27/07/2009 at 00:32

    Which college?

  • Joe27/07/2009 at 00:34

Basingstoke College Of Technology. Doing games design, 3D modeling, that sort of thing. Looking forward to it.

  • Bassano Clapper27/07/2009 at 00:35

Sounds good, I used to have family in Basingstoke

Not very many other people :(

    G'day everyone.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 06:43

    G'day everyone.

    Morning Sean!

Genuine question... At what times can G'day be used? All times? Or is it more of a mornings thing?

  • Sean Golding27/07/2009 at 06:45

Genuine question... At what times can G'day be used? All times? Or is it more of a mornings thing?

Pretty much whenever, although I'd say only use it when its daylight.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 06:46

    Then G'night?

    Then G'night?

    Not really.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 06:49

    Not really.

So what do you do when it's dark and you see somebody for the first time... Actually G'Night wouldn't make sense that would be like it's time to go. It's more like we'd say "evening".

  • Sean Golding27/07/2009 at 06:49

Do we really have to have 4 weeks of this Piquet leaving nonsense? Can't they just say for sure that he's going now?

We say evening too. Or just, you know, hello.

Yeah, but I don't like having things all over my tray. It's just me I guess, I prefer minimising it down to the clock area.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 08:17

I have just listened back to the parade lap...

I feel like we've done a jake and have the open talkback that goes on in my ear while we're doing the parade lap ;) The secrets are revealed because there is more in the replay video than actually went out live!

    Oh really? That's not good.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 08:20

    Oh really? That's not good.

Nothing bad on there at all! It's a lot of Mr C saying, "um wave, ah I see I think I need to reboot the server," and the feed cuts out!

Ah. If it is the bit where everything died that is not so bad. I thought you meant when we chatter as the songs are on.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 08:22

The secrets I describe are not very interesting secrets. They are very much of the type, "Christine and me carried on typing and giggling while Mr C was panicking".

Ah. If it is the bit where everything died that is not so bad. I thought you meant when we chatter as the songs are on.

Ah no. None of that went out. Although I'm still careful in those bits because I remember your warning from many weeks ago!

  • Christine27/07/2009 at 08:24

    Massa news:

Bocskai told Hungarian television: "He's woken up (from sedation) more and more often now and he's able to communicate actively, that is, he reacts when he's talked to. We are optimistic, in our hope a slow recovery is beginning."

I am still jealous of your insider access ;)

heh! If you heard the conversation while the music is playing it would be very much of the style...

Mr C: "Alex have you finished that bit yet."

    Alex: "No."

    *typing ensues*

Christine: "45 seconds to the end of the track."

Mr C: "I haven't been reading the comments, I've been on twitter, anyone kept up with the comments"?

  • Journeyer27/07/2009 at 09:00

    Morning Journeyer, how goes it?

My week has been off to a good start. Let's see if this keeps up. :)

Good to hear about Massa. Just realized something - his accident (and hopefully, a full recovery) will endear him even more to the hearts of the tifosi. He'll be remembered fondly whatever happens to him, regardless of whether he wins titles or not.

  • Alianora La Canta27/07/2009 at 09:00

    Finally getting round to putting up some Montreal pics. Realise I didn’t take very many at all {Comment #9}

I'm sure you took more than me. I took ten photos, of which three turned out to be black rectangles and most of the others were distant shots of the top of Force India's motorhome. The one I took of the drivers' parade is laughably bad - mostly it's a picture of the front of the lorry, with an amorphous blur of people just to the left of it...

  • Alianora La Canta27/07/2009 at 09:02

Now that is good news. Communication is a goid sign at this early stage. Hope the progress in recovery remains fast :)

Why is a Hungarian defence ministery spokesperson the one making the statements? Is he at a military hospital?

Why is a Hungarian defence ministery spokesperson the one making the statements? Is he at a military hospital?

Good question. I guess it could be because it's an international thing?

  • Christine27/07/2009 at 10:19

Why is a Hungarian defence ministery spokesperson the one making the statements? Is he at a military hospital?

    Ah, later on he says:

"There are experienced army soldiers in the medical team that is working around him. The doctors who completed the operation had experiences with some really extreme injuries, amongst them Colonel (Lajos) Zsiros, who has attended many military missions. He is the leading surgeon of the Hungarian Defence Forces."

Very good. It's nice to get to the end of the day and know you've achieved lots.

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 10:28

Also, I've started using Google Chrome because Firefox is just annoying me now but for some reason 5 or 6 times out of 10 Chrome doesn't actually load webpages :/

Any reason for this at all? Or perhaps a problem with my router or something else? Firefox didn't load but I'd say that was once a day, not every few pages...

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 10:33

Just listening to the debrief because of all of the several telephone calls and dinner that meant I had to miss large chunks.

I think it's funny that Mr C is still upset about the time Christine kept his show notes away from him!

That was my first exciting foray into the interactive world of Sidepodcast. It was my suggestion (don't tell Mr C). It was a thrill to have a small comment from the comments make it to the show! :)

See, this weekend's win is strange. I like this image. I'm no Mclaren fan but there's genuine happiness there between Whitmarsh and Lewis I reckon and it's nice to see them enjoying it after a tough season so far.

Then I see this image, and all I can think of is the word 'smug'. Bleh.

Hehe. It doesn't feel like that much effort. A bit of "this one?" "oh no better this one" "or sell this and buy the other two" after second practice on Friday and then just the usual Sunday during/post-race changes. That's all. That's not too bad is it ...

Even more frightening: My change history has reached page 7. About 140 changes during the season until now.

Oh. My name is Kathi and I am a fantaholic.

What do people think of Renaults suspension from European (Valencia) race?

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 11:54

What do people think of Renaults suspension from European (Valencia) race?

100% okay with it. it was dangerous and stupid.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 11:55

What do people think of Renaults suspension from European (Valencia) race?

I think that if (which is what the FIA are suggesting) the team knew that the wheel wasn't safe before Alonso left the pit lane, but they didn't tell Alonso they deserve the punishment. Alonso was on the pit radio saying that he thought the car had a puncture.

Teams have always been in trouble for not informing their drivers of dangers like that. (except perhaps Kimi's dangerous exhaust last year)

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 11:57

What do people think of Renaults suspension from European (Valencia) race?

I agree with the suspension, although I wouldn't be surprised if they end up racing in Valencia and the suspension is held back till Monza or somewhere like Joe says in his blog. People will speculate they got the suspension because of the state of affairs in motorsport concerning tyre safety and other areas within the past week but regardless of that the team completely messed up the pitstop and obviously didn't inform Alonso well enough as he thought it was a puncture.

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 11:57

Although I do think, if they don't race in Valencia, it'll put a big downer on the european GP as I can see a lot of the spanish media and fans ignoring the event without Alonso there.

truth be told she has been to more races than I have, she's gone to the Aus GP the last 4 years or so "but I find it boring on TV" says she.

She gets a discount with Etihad and is going to Europe at the end of the year and is pondering going via Abu Dhabi if the dates match up with the race.

Justifiable then. Interesting she finds it boring on TV whereas I got quite bored at the one race I went to. Mind you, with Schumacher and Barrichello it was a ferrari doubleshot and I was going to be bored regardless of where I was!

    Hi all. 1st comment.

The claim that Renault 'knowingly' released an unsafe car is a little strong, that would be deliberately sabotaging their own race. If Renault are punished, why shouldn't the stewards also be reprimanded for not black flagging him once it was clear that the wheel was loose. Brundle spotted it minutes before it came off and the stewards are ultimately responsible for safety aren't they?

  • Amy27/07/2009 at 12:18

Good to hear from you Brett! Welcome!

    Two things...

    1) It would be better for them to try and get him back to the pits, they couldn't reverse him down the pitlane. So there is a chance it was worth them trying to keep him going

    2) I totally agree he should have been black flagged. Very poor stewarding there.

  • Brett27/07/2009 at 12:23

Ah, yeah I didn't think that maybe they were trying to send him all the way round. That is a rather irresponsible, especially if they didn't tell FA to drive very slowly. I can see why they would have done it though.

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 12:23

Doesn't the black flag only come out on the start-finish line, though? I'm basing this on my foggy memory of Schumi at GBR 1994 and Frentzen at AUS 2002.

    Apparently they didn't tell him.

    Hi all. 1st comment.

    howdy.

If Renault are punished, why shouldn't the stewards also be reprimanded for not black flagging him once it was clear that the wheel was loose.

    very true.

i can only assume that the stewards think renault did what they deliberately. e.g. got pole and then stuffed the pitstop to hide the fact the car has no pace?

we haven't heard the radio conversation (what happened to the fia releasing relevant bit related to stewards discussions?), but maybe the whole "i think i have a puncture", was nothing more than a charade.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:27

It should be a black flag with an orange circle I think from memory. Just a black flag means come back to the pits...

    *goes to check*

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:27

Doesn't the black flag only come out on the start-finish line, though? I'm basing this on my foggy memory of Schumi at GBR 1994 and Frentzen at AUS 2002.

black flag is shown on the timing screens, so no.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:29

    Apparently...

A black flag orders a particular driver to return to his pit within the next lap and report immediately to the Clerk of the Course, usually because he has been disqualified from the race.

A black flag with an orange circle (40 cm in diameter) in the centre informs a driver that his car has a mechanical problem that has the potential to harm himself or other drivers and he must return to his pit.

The problem would appear that there isn't one which says, stop where you are... But they could have ordered the team to make him do that over the radio and shown him that one.

  • Journeyer27/07/2009 at 12:29

we haven’t heard the radio conversation (what happened to the fia releasing relevant bit related to stewards discussions?), but maybe the whole “i think i have a puncture”, was nothing more than a charade.

what do you mean, mr. c?

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:29

It should be a black flag with an orange circle I think from memory. Just a black flag means come back to the pits...

orange is "mechanical problem, pull over now". i guess it's a tough call because it initially looked like it was just the spinner that was loose.

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:29

Good to hear from you Brett! Welcome!

welcome Brett. we like new people :)

I thought he should have been black flagged as well. The stewards have to make that call and tell the marshalls - there was no way a marshall could spot the wobbly tyre out there. I'm still shocked that Alonso didn't stop on track by his own choice, but he thought he had a puncture so no massive danger.

  • Kostia27/07/2009 at 12:30

What do people think of Renaults suspension from European (Valencia) race?

what do you think of it Kostia?

    RANT WARNING!

Ye well I think 1 thing Scott. Everybody but ferrari gets penalties and it makes me hate ferrari and the sole reason they get no loving from me. Seems awefuly biased right, as I see it Ferrari is a bully in F1. Bully: "he started it, I swear!" sort of thing. Multiple pit stop exit lights failures by ferrari plus kimis exhaust are some of the things.

"Situation is different in the case of Alonso, because the team knew, dumb Kostia" yes but a race suspension, you have got to be joking. Ferrari the sole of Motorsport, well wonderful things like Ferrari and FIA cannot stay forever now can they. (Of course they can stay forever as long they love each other).

  • Brett27/07/2009 at 12:30

i can only assume that the stewards think renault did what they deliberately. e.g. got pole and then stuffed the pitstop to hide the fact the car has no pace?

Presumably Renault planned this in the Hollywood studio where the Moon landings were staged? :)

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:31

orange is "mechanical problem, pull over now". i guess it's a tough call because it initially looked like it was just the spinner that was loose.

i'm glad you found it which flag it was - i knew there was one. i saw it in GP2 or something last year.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:31

i can only assume that the stewards think renault did what they deliberately. e.g. got pole and then stuffed the pitstop to hide the fact the car has no pace?

I really don't think this is likely.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:31

I really don't think this is likely.

I think they just wanted to get him back round to the pits.

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:31

Presumably Renault planned this in the Hollywood studio where the Moon landings were staged? :)

I am so sick of *these* conspiracies. The moon landings were faked in russia, and that's what makes it more impressive ;)

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:32

what do you mean, mr. c?

only a conspiracy theory. but if renault do want to sell... one way to get a good price could be to:

    - guarantee pole

    - run at the front

    - find a single fall guy on which to blame stuffing the race (in this case the wheel man)

    - alonso pretends he thinks he has a puncture.

doesn't seem likely, but without access to the radio calls, it's hard to make a judgement.

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:32

I think they just wanted to get him back round to the pits.

yeah i have to agree with Alex, but has anyone seen a loose wheel survive a whole lap? incredibly "optimistic" on their part, but i prefer the word "foolish"

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:33

yeah i have to agree with Alex, but has anyone seen a loose wheel survive a whole lap? incredibly "optimistic" on their part, but i prefer the word "foolish"

Well they must have thought, we have two choices have him pull over now and guarantee DNF or hope for the best

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:33

I really don't think this is likely.

nope. i think BoL pointed out on the renault blog that one of the stewards was the same guy who embarrassed himself by crashing a renault off the start line a while back.

that seems far more likely to be the reason to me. hence the immediate appeal.

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:34

I think they just wanted to get him back round to the pits.

best way to do that is to tell the driver the wheel might fall off and drive accordingly.

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:34

doesn't seem likely, but without access to the radio calls, it's hard to make a judgement.

conspiracies are fun, but surely a buyer will look at the overall performance, and not just the on track stuff. anyone can see how light the guy was.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:34

best way to do that is to tell the driver the wheel might fall off and drive accordingly.

But wouldn't that guarantee an unsafe release penalty?

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:35

Presumably Renault planned this in the Hollywood studio where the Moon landings were staged? :)

i doubt flav was involved unless there was money to be made ;)

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:35

But wouldn't that guarantee an unsafe release penalty?

yeah but that might not have been a suspension.

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:35

nope. i think BoL pointed out on the renault blog that one of the stewards was the same guy who embarrassed himself by crashing a renault off the start line a while back.

    Joe did as well

  • Journeyer27/07/2009 at 12:35

doesn’t seem likely, but without access to the radio calls, it’s hard to make a judgement.

That's a rather risky way of bluffing your way out. :D I'd have done something less risky, like busting a gearbox or getting him to run out of fuel.

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:36

That's a rather risky way of bluffing your way out. :D I'd have done something less risky, like busting a gearbox or getting him to run out of fuel.

or let Piquet drive both cars for the race ;)

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:37

But wouldn't that guarantee an unsafe release penalty?

no, but if alonso really thought he had a puncture he likely would've driven faster than if he thought the wheel would come off. a puncture would've damaged the front wing, but not much more.

  • Brett27/07/2009 at 12:37

nope. i think BoL pointed out on the renault blog that one of the stewards was the same guy who embarrassed himself by crashing a renault off the start line a while back.

Mohammad Bin Sulayem? The guy who arranged ~40 votes for Max at teh last FIA election! Wow. Thats interesting.

    What is BoL?

  • Alex Andronov27/07/2009 at 12:37

no, but if alonso really thought he had a puncture he likely would've driven faster than if he thought the wheel would come off. a puncture would've damaged the front wing, but not much more.

What I mean is if the team come on the radio and say, "we know your wheel isn't attached".

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:38

    What is BoL?

blue and orange lion. he comments here and on the renault blog.

as alex pointed out, joe mentioned the connection here too:

  • Scott in Italy27/07/2009 at 12:39

Mohammad Bin Sulayem? The guy who arranged ~40 votes for Max at teh last FIA election! Wow. Thats interesting.

there are conspiracies that this is the most pro Max set of stewards you could assemble. Renault are led by Flav which has pushed FOTA. Max doesn't like FOTA and therefore theories suggest this is why renault got banned. i still think renault have themselves to blame on this,.

  • me27/07/2009 at 12:40

That's a rather risky way of bluffing your way out. :D I'd have done something less risky, like busting a gearbox or getting him to run out of fuel.

    West Wing...cheese....West Wing...cotingency

I think you should watch more West Wing because you pretend you're in the situation room and then you can come up with a contingency plan. There's a few fans around here of that show, including me, who got through every episode earlier this year.

    can't wait.

well ... as you know, he is a racing driver so his education was maybe compromised by the amount of time he spent training and racing, he doesn't boast to be good at English ;)

It also seems that being in f1 means that you need to say 'for sure' a lot... maybe he got confused by someone around him saying 'for sure' at the time, or realised he had not said it in a while and used it as 'thinking time' like a lot of people use 'er' as a chance to think quickly about answers... either that or he changed his answer half way through by saying 'for sure....not.' but the interviewer didn't include the ellipsis.

Whats the difference? Le Mans drivers have to cope with more cars, bigger closing speeds. I'm not saying it won't effect it, i'm just saying that others have raced with only one eye before.

Nice words from Luca as well. Interesting snippet:

"I'm heading back to Maranello with Domenicali, who will make suggestions how to substitute the Brazilian driver until he returns, which I hope will be very soon. We'll make a decision when the time is right, considering that there's a break of a month now."

I just saw someone say that Brawn should be banned for the spring incident. Considering Renault were banned for what could have been a potential accident, a Brawn ban for an actual accident doesn't sound harsh.

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 15:58

    Hello all

    Afternoon.

  • Rich27/07/2009 at 15:58

Just finished all day lectures so immediately checked on news of Felipe. I really hope and pray the eye damage is not as bad as suggested in the news. I did wonder after seeing THAT photograph whether the eye could be an issue but kept my thoughts to myself. On a more positive note I thought the video Forza Felipe, Siamo Con Te posted on YouTube was very touching. It is clear to me that without taking extreme measures safety could still be improved. One suggestion is to ban the wheel bins and to be stricter if a car is observed to have parts flapping (Kimi and the exhaust spring to mind). Having said that I still find a lot ambiguity in FIA in their penalties Renault vs Red Bull incidents. Yes Renault made mistakes and considering DeSeb's Australian GP Fernando should have been told by the team to retired the car when the wheel came off. I do not blame the driver for continuing (in either case) but I think this is an area where greater clarity could be exercised e.g. if you loose a wheel you must take the car off the track to a safe position. Yes there will grey areas like if you loose the tyre. Possibly by simulating various scenarios (even in a wind tunnel) danger to other drivers could be assessed for various parts that could potentially fall off. From this analysis guidelines could be drawn up. I agree that in both of the recent accidents this would not have helped, but we need to look to the future by learning what is possible from the past. A few years ago a delamination of a truck tyre hit my car while I was driving at night about 70 mph. The damage was fairly extensive despite keeping some distance behind the truck. I realised bits flying off can travel large relative distances.

  • me27/07/2009 at 15:59

Also, the Brawn incident was an accident, but so was the Renault one and they were banned. I'm really just repeating what I said but still.

renault's appeared to be human error. do we know if brawn's was, or was it material failure?

  • me27/07/2009 at 15:59

    Hello all

    hullo squire.

  • Joe27/07/2009 at 15:59

that's a given, but do you think brawn should be banned too?

I'd say if Renault remain banned, Brawn should get it too.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 16:00

What? Inconsistency from the stewards in F1? Never!

that's a given, but do you think brawn should be banned too?

I think Renault getting banned was either (a) a typical knee-jerk reaction from the FIA after someone gets hurt or (b) a cynical way to allow Alonso to race a Ferrari in his home GP.

Consider this though. The Spanish fans only really care about Alonso and from the ones I know, there's no way they'll even watch if he doesn't race...

  • me27/07/2009 at 16:00

Kimi and the exhaust spring to mind

ooh, that's interesting. hadn't thought about that.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 16:00

I just saw someone say that Brawn should be banned for the spring incident. Considering Renault were banned for what could have been a potential accident, a Brawn ban for an actual accident doesn't sound harsh.

Renault didn't get the ban for the wheel coming off. THey got banned for not using a compulsory safety device to prevent that happening so it is a bit different.

However the Bran thing is veryweird for me. I have never known a front running team have a spring/damper unit just fall off the car. I would have said that such a thing was impossible without serious contact being made.

  • Rich27/07/2009 at 16:04

Before one starts talking about banning Brawn you need to assess how preventable was the incident. To be honest Renault there were several points of issue - should Alonso have driven back to the pits on three wheels is just one?

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 16:04

Shortly after the accident happened, we were told he was alright. Now it's gotten very bad. Turnaround. :(

To be fair it's a little better than it was the other night when the word 'life threatening' was being thrown around everywhere :(

I'm very concerned about the eye injury that the doctors mentioned this morning myself, but at least Felipe it seems has responded very well to the surgery and what the doctors have done so far to save him.

From this pic it seems like quite a secure piece to just fall off, so maybe it was just worn out?

By the way, the piece that fell off is piece #1...

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 16:06

By the way, the piece that fell off is piece #1...

What was the other stuff to fall out? There was another object or two that fell out as Barrichello went around the corner, then the spring fell out as he went down the straight obviously.

Both are very serious and I wouldn't say you can prioritise one over the other.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 16:08

How long before the race will they make their decision, I wonder.

I guess they will want to give the new guy at least on straight line test or a demo run somewhere first. Effectively they only need to make the announcement about a week before the race,

  • Journeyer27/07/2009 at 16:08

drivers frequently drive back to the pits with punctures. lewis has made a career out of doing so.

but a punctured wheel still has contact with the ground, right? it still does function as a wheel, if barely.

I guess they will want to give the new guy at least on straight line test or a demo run somewhere first. Effectively they only need to make the announcement about a week before the race,

If it's a Gene or a Schumacher or an Alonso, they won't need too much running. If it's a Borlotti or some other youngster, they'd need some of that.

  • me27/07/2009 at 16:09

but a punctured wheel still has contact with the ground, right? it still does function as a wheel, if barely.

hardly. it's more dangerous isn't it? bit flying around and taking out bit of bodywork with it.

To be honest Renault there were several points of issue - should Alonso have driven back to the pits on three wheels is just one?

...which also is done slowly while damaging the car. If Alonso felt unsafe doing it, he wouldn't have bothered...

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 16:10

From this pic it seems like quite a secure piece to just fall off, so maybe it was just worn out?

It takes two bolts to fail for it to fall off. Presumably one failed and the spring/damper worked the other one loose flailing around.

The spring is effectively wrapped round a damper. So the first part was the damper.

I was a bit annoyed with James Allen's tweet, I know he was attempting to balance sensational news but he did not attribute enough seriousness to the accident. Joe's comments though were spot on and his professionalism showed through. You have to wait to determine what the damage is in an accident such as this. Hospital staff have stated that if he had not been operated on he would have died - that is life-threatening in anyone's language.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 16:11

I was a bit annoyed with James Allen's tweet, I know he was attempting to balance sensational news but he did not attribute enough seriousness to the accident. Joe's comments though were spot on and his professionalism showed through.

joe had more characters to play with though :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 16:13

To be fair it's a little better than it was the other night when the word 'life threatening' was being thrown around everywhere :(

I am annoyed James Allen posted that photo.

drivers frequently drive back to the pits with punctures. lewis has made a career out of doing so.

Once the wheel has gone there is no reall danger carrying on with only three. All sorts of drivers have done that. Schumacher did most of a lap of Spa like that in 1998 because he wanted to thump DC and we saw the vid of Gilles recently in a car that still had some suspension travel drive a lap of Zandvoort with only two wheels touching the ground for most of it.

...which also is done slowly while damaging the car. If Alonso felt unsafe doing it, he wouldn't have bothered...

my point is Red Bull where fined in Australian for DeSeb attempting to bring back a three-wheeled car - does this not set a precedent? I looking for guidance on safety and consistency in regulation.

That's why I think it's a knee-jerk reaction or a way to make an opening for Alonso to Ferrari. There are no precedents when it comes to FIA rulings which is interesting considering their head was a top lawyer.

The poblem there was he drove with the fourth wheel still attached to the car and flailing around. Had it come off there could have been an accident. For me once the wheel has detached there is no danger in an F1 driver finishing a lap on 3 wheels other than the speed difference.

But Lord Paul Drayson is only sighted in one eye and he lobbied the FIA to give him a racing licence. I'm more worried about a head injury TBH...

I would not think a one-eyed driver should be allowed to drive an F1 car - you simply cannot have the same judgement of distances and put other drivers at risk. wrt head injury there are example of drivers retuning to the track and being OK - the devil is in the detail of the damage to the brain.

i thought he drove back very well. the front wing survived almost entirely intact.

I agree he drove back well, certainly I do not blame Fernando for the penalty - in fact I think it is very hard on him - except he will not miss the European GP because money will talk.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 16:23

Interesting he compares it to Lauda...

When Lauda was still gravelly ill they signed someone (Reggazoni?) to replace him. That was the main reason Lauda was back racing in 6 weeks because he was about to lose his drive. It was incredibly callous.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 16:34

It's not really a pin. There is a pull out or push in device in the middle of the wheel that locks it in place.

Martin Haven's take on Renault's penalty....

The Man has a point you know!

No he doesn't. The retaining device does not affect whether or not the wheel stays on. The wheel nut does that. They could have thought that the wheel nut was on properly but for some reason the retaining device wouldn't engage and then thought that no-one will ever know so we will just chance it.

If that is what happened it has to be stopped from happening again.

You are absolutely right in the approach you want Rich. I doubt whether the FIA will show the same intelligence.

For me the Surtees accident is entirely preventable. I have been arguing since the 80s that F1 and other single seater classes should have overhead protection like Top Fuel dragsters. Had that been in place none of us would even know about Surtees's car being hit by a wheel.

I have also argued for the same time that there should be bars in front of and behind the wheels of single seaters to stop one launching over another. Had that been the case Clarke's wheel would not have been launched across the track.

I have a freebie NASCAR game somewhere and every time you pit the engineer is in your ear saying stick to 3500 revs in second

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 16:53

    From Martin Brundle's column:

The sport's governing body, the FIA, says Renault broke the sporting regulations but the team almost certainly would not have been penalised for the same situation at the previous race.

We have seen many cars lose a wheel without retribution. There is an automatic wheel retaining device fitted to all F1 wheel spindles which clearly also failed in this case and which would normally have prevented the wheel parting company fully.

  • Rich27/07/2009 at 16:53

For me the Surtees accident is entirely preventable. I have been arguing since the 80s that F1 and other single seater classes should have overhead protection like Top Fuel dragsters. Had that been in place none of us would even know about Surtees's car being hit by a wheel.

I have also argued for the same time that there should be bars in front of and behind the wheels of single seaters to stop one launching over another. Had that been the case Clarke's wheel would not have been launched across the track.

You a right Steven ideas such as yours could tested - even modelled with their fancy computers. Without being ridiculous I think it is still possible to get safer still. I have also wondered if the silly tyres that wear out so quickly are altogether safe. I hate the two tyre interference rule bring different tyres that are safe and let the teams decide which they want/need.

So like 2003 for JPM - flying at Indy, before the stewards call him in for a drive-through.

  • Journeyer27/07/2009 at 16:55

I am waiting for NASA to post something saying what they achieved. I don't believe they finished an hour and a half early and completed their list especially as there were tasks left over from the first three spacewalks.

To me they should let people run whatever tyre they want from the range.

One thing I read on recently was someone proposing low profile tyres so that they would bounce less if the wheel gets free.

Sounds like NASCAR screwed themselves over from a lot of publicity over 0.5 mph.

I am sure they will be happy an American guy won though.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 17:00

That's what you have to balance out. You also have to consider the extra suspension loads if a tyre has less spring in it.

  • Rich27/07/2009 at 17:00

One thing I read on recently was someone proposing low profile tyres so that they would bounce less if the wheel gets free.

Seems logical to me apart from one thing. When they were landing on the moon they slowed the LEM down using a rocket engine. If you do that on cheese you are just going to melt it. So every time you find somewhere to land you are going to melt it. So if someone went there and committed to a landing they drowned in molten cheese.

You would have to assume a rocket engine was not needed because cheese is soft and would absorb the impact.

A brief run down of the rest of the shuttle mision.

Tomorrow is packing day. They have a range of stuff that has to be packed in the shuttle before it leaves. Tomorrow night the hatches between the two vehicles get closed.

Wednesday Endeavour undocks and does a flyaround of the ISS. Theis can bee quite entertaining and worth watching. They also do a final inspection of the shuttle's thermal protection system.

Thursday is a systems check day and apparently they are deploying a couple of satellites that I didn't know about.

Friday - they shut the doors fire the rockets and land. Unless the weather doesn't co-operate in which case they hang around in spce foranother day.

NASA are taking the mickey now. As well as completing their list in a ridiculously short time they also performed some get ahead tasks including tying down some cables and fitting some handrails and foot restraints.

    major media fail for AUTOSPORT.

am just reading tony dodgins' column and it states - for more information:

"see MPH column in Thursday's Autosport magazine"

so. we pay a monthly subscription to autosport online, and that kindly tells us to:

    1) wait four days for the rest of the story.

    2) then go outside to the shops and pay for a paper copy of the magazine.

i can't think of a bigger insult to online subscribers. i may have to go and rant on their forums.

Evening all. Just read about Massa's eye damage. This was quite disheartening:

""He has suffered some damage to the eye," said Veres. "We don't know whether he'll be able to race again.""

it's delayed by a week though. which gives me the other option of:

    3) sitting on my hands for 11 days to find out what's being said.

if they want to charge more, then fine. give us that option, but it's stupid keeping information back to coincide with print deadlines.

renault's appeared to be human error. do we know if brawn's was, or was it material failure?

Mr Brawn suggested it was a part failure but said they looking into it last time i checked. i suppose they've got the part back by now? He said something about them having run the part all season... i assumed he meant that version, but could he have meant that exact part?

Just taking a page out of Jenson's book there

i'm sure he didn't mean to use such bad english....

ah ok.i suppose Brawn cant do anymore about it for a while anyway considering their factory is shut for the next 2 weeks.

also true. does that start today? surely the cars need to get back in?

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 19:49

the fia still have it i think.

Brawn should be able to tell a lot from examining the holes the bolts were in. They should be able to tell which blot went first and what the failure mode was by marking/scoring.

  • Nick27/07/2009 at 19:49

ah ok.i suppose Brawn cant do anymore about it for a while anyway considering their factory is shut for the next 2 weeks.

    It's got some serious competition!

  • lou27/07/2009 at 19:50

Is this the stupidest rule that F1 has ever had?

it's high up on the list.. but i still think banning in season testing, and banning refuelling are a little higher.

  • Pat W27/07/2009 at 19:51

    (A quick hi, I'm semi-lurking)

Also, if it's anything like weekly magazine subscriptions we've had in the past, it will get to us about three days late.

Mine never arrived last week, and I've noticed for some time now (as in over a year) that Wednesdays are really quiet on the website, then lots appear on Thursdays to coincide with the mag which contains the same stories.

tbh I only get the mag now for the features.

  • Alison27/07/2009 at 19:51

Is this the stupidest rule that F1 has ever had?

Hmmm at least it's only 2 weeks out of the 4. I thought it was a whole month at first.... I'm sure they've done some pretty stupid things in the past though.....

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 19:52

Is this the stupidest rule that F1 has ever had?

Not even close. The FIA has had all sorts of stupid rules. It is almost their specialist subject.

The 6cm rule was a classic. They made a rule that the bottom of the car had to be 6 cm of the ground but they could only measure it in the pits. So teams invented all sorts of systems so that the car was 6cm off the ground in the pits but as soon as it was doing any speed the downforce lowered the ride height.

Everyone knew what was happening but they kept checking them in the pits anyway

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 19:52

Hmmm at least it's only 2 weeks out of the 4. I thought it was a whole month at first.... I'm sure they've done some pretty stupid things in the past though.....

It's gonna waste a loooooooooot of time that could be spent on developments though for the teams, and I'm sure Mr Brawn would be wanting to working on getting Brawn back to what is expected of them with the factory guys at the moment than anything else

  • Nick27/07/2009 at 19:53

it's high up on the list.. but i still think banning in season testing, and banning refuelling are a little higher.

Ah, i like banning of refuling, and i think the total banning of testing was silly, but locking up factories?

Next they will only give them £20 phone credit for the year!

    It's got some serious competition!

    Please go on! :D

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 19:54

    Voicemails sent :)

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 19:54

Ah, i like banning of refuling, and i think the total banning of testing was silly, but locking up factories?

I like banning refuelling and closing the factories for 2 weeks. There should be no limits on testing though.

    http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Interviews+with+Bloggers

do we have a plan for when to record?

Well seeing as I am calling you on Wednesday night for Scott, why not make it a double date?

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:06

I have indeed. That should be one of the games we talk about in the preview section.

are you guys recording between yourselves, or should we schedule a time to record the convo?

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:06

Well seeing as I am calling you on Wednesday night for Scott, why not make it a double date?

    you are? ace.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 20:06

Er... yes ;) Seen this? http://www.real-timeracing.com/

I have indeed. That should be one of the games we talk about in the preview section.

In all honesty you will probably have more news than me anyway so you may as well announce the stories and ask me some questions.

Are we just talking about news or other stuff too?

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:07

Well seeing as I am calling you on Wednesday night for Scott, why not make it a double date?

I was going to suggest to do mine on Wednesday too. :P

Didn't we agree to call you on Wed night on skype and you would record it for us?

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 20:07

On there it talked about the american release but I read yesterday on another confirmed source the same pack was coming to the UK. Will try and find that for you...

I can't find the story but this pretty much confirms it'll be here too

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:07

I was going to suggest to do mine on Wednesday too. :P

good stuff, have updates the wiki. what sort of time?

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:08

Didn't we agree to call you on Wed night on skype and you would record it for us?

    That magazine is still going?

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:09

do we have a plan for when to record?

Can we do it in an hour's time? I am pretty much finished with the questions

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:10

Can we do it in an hour's time? I am pretty much finished with the questions

    really? wow, yup can do.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:10

Are we just talking about news or other stuff too?

I've decided to do a news section first with the latest sim racing news this week, then a preview section featuring some big upcoming racing titles, then I might do a review of my new wheel or something, still need to decide that. And also maybe a discussion on how to start sim racing. How does that sound?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 20:10

Can we do it in an hour's time? I am pretty much finished with the questions

    What, live?

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:11

    What, live?

    *gulp*

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:11

    What, live?

steven's recording the questions, and then people can answer them when they have the time.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 20:11

Bruno says "Get Well Soon, Felipe"

Made me smile, this one ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 20:11

    What, live?

steven's recording the questions, and then people can answer them when they have the time.

Well he can ask me them live if he wants to...

    even better!

blimey, tis all kicking off :)

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:13

    cheers buddy.

No problem. Will update with what exactly will be coming up in the show in just a bit. It's only a rough outline, still need to decide what the content will be.

Sounds good. I think I would be of most value talking about how I got into Sim Racing and my history, just because I have been playing sim racing for a long time over a lot of platforms and can tell you what it was like etc...

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:13

    What, live?

The plan as I understand it is I record the questions then they are played to each blogger so that everyone gets the same questions.

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:13

that's the one. we'll need an intro from you explaining the basic outline of the show if that's possible too?

We're both quite experienced. It will be interesting since you're the PC racing expert and I'm the one on consoles. :P

Well that's up to you of course, it's your show. But would it not sound better if you asked them live? Otherwise, how else am I going to ask you why you don't have a blog?

  • me27/07/2009 at 20:15

    I ask ze Qvestions

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:17

I might have started a tiny bit earlier than you though?

Earliest memory I have is about 7 or 8 years old on the PS1 on Gran Turismo and V-Rally. This was about 1997-1998 time.

You're not keen on doing it live? What if you find out a question is duff or you want to change it? You could think of me as a dummy run...?

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:18

    Kooler, eight veeks.

OK yep... got 10 years on you then. Ferrari Formula One, 1987 ;)

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:18

Well that's up to you of course, it's your show. But would it not sound better if you asked them live? Otherwise, how else am I going to ask you why you don't have a blog?

Actually it was Christine's idea. i like live as you know but it is unfair if some people get live and others don't. I will have a question where you can tell me why I should have a blog. Can't say fairer than that.

We could actually use these as fillers between shows rather than as one complete show.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:19

OK yep... got 10 years on you then. Ferrari Formula One, 1987 ;)

Actually I can go earlier. Lotus Turbo Challenge on the Mega Drive/Genesis!

    About 1994-1995.

I have a bad feeling that you would have beaten me, seeing what happened this week!

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:20

You're not keen on doing it live? What if you find out a question is duff or you want to change it? You could think of me as a dummy run...?

The questions are good. The answers may not be up to much.

I say treat it like a podpanel. Don't stick rigidly to answering the question. Look on it as a way to get eyeballs for your blog and take the politician's approach.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 20:20

I don't think it's unfair but dude, it's your call. I'm just letting you know I am keen...

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 20:37

So I cab't change your mind Steven?

If you are keen to do it live I could try the questions on you. What I am keen to avoid is that you and I get conversational. I would like this to be straight question and answer.

If you are doing nothing then there is no reason why you can't answer as I am asking.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 20:38

groovy, ta. now to convince lou...

We're gonna need some help here. Steven!

    Ready for your interview

    what?... no...

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 21:01

    what?... no...

I am interviewing bloggers for sidepodradio and your blog one one of the slots in Christine's prize draw.

    It's 10 simple questions.

  • lou27/07/2009 at 21:03

2 things.... skype doesn't work on my laptop anymore, and does it have to be tonight?...

    brb in 5...

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 21:07

but my blog is new and very boring atm..

The point of the interviews is to let people plug their blogs and get more readers.

2 things.... skype doesn't work on my laptop anymore, and does it have to be tonight?...

No. I am recording the questions tonight but you can sort out a time with Christine and Mr C to listen to and answer them. They are really simple questions just to let you talk about your blog without thinking what to say. They are really just reminders to help your conversation along.

My view is this show is about the bloggers and the less I say the better.

  • lou27/07/2009 at 21:08

nope and we can send you the questions and you can answer whenever you like if you prefer.

that would be much nicer... i would probably prefer that if i have to do it...tbh..

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 21:19

For those being interviewed about your blog, don't worry, the questions are really nice and you'll get to see a list of them before you hear steven ask them.

I think it's going to be a very good show and I can't wait to hear it :)

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 22:04

It's going to rain, y'all better get on the boat, oh and yes i do have a very long white beard....santa like....

How many plastic bottles do you nee for an arc?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/07/2009 at 22:05

I'm gonna delete that Scott, hope you understand.

Yup, sorry for any offense. Just thought I'd show how unthoughtful some people can be sometimes.

Noted, but it came across as you telling a bad joke...

Yeah, sorry if it was read that way. :(

    Doesn’t the black flag only come out on the start-finish line, though? I’m basing this on my foggy memory of Schumi at GBR 1994 and Frentzen at AUS 2002. {Comment #135}

Yes, the black flags (both plain and with orange circle) are only shown at the start/finish line - but the team gets immediate notification through the messaging system. It wouldn't have changed anything on track, but it would make it easier for the FIA to impose its will. Appealing a black flag is much harder than appealing a suspension because the penalty has already been levied.

Haven't really been paying attention for the past few mins. Are you using skype Mr/Mrs C? I'm planning to leave a recording for a transition, but I don't want to interupt anything

They are on skype now. I have recorded some questions for bloggers so it may be that one of them is answering them just now. I think Giggles was due about now

yup chris. just search for sidepodcast in skype and when you call us, it should automatically go to voicemail. yell if you have issues and thank you.

Scott's on skype as well so I guess he is answering questions. It shouldn't take more than about 10 minutes even with re-takes

  • Chris27/07/2009 at 22:38

Already got you on Skype, just wasn't sure if it was a physical voicemail system, or some daft one that only works if you're not on the phone

Done. Wrote the script out before recording, but forgot to double check a fact before recording. Thankfully, I just checked and I was right! *phew!*

Although, seeing as I encourage people to donate in my transition, I'd better do that myself now. Don't want to appear hypocritical...

  • Lukeh27/07/2009 at 22:47

Urm, hi. I'm not here but I was just drifting off to sleep and I got a text that turned out to be a direct message on twitter, I have NO idea how that found it's way to my phone as a text message, from chris humphreys asking to be un modded or something on here. Turned laptop on to get angry at twitter and find out how the heck it managed to do and I suppose I'd pass on message... although I kinda get the idea you guys already have had plenty yourselves saying the same thing...

Anyways... twitter woke me up via phone. grr. Night.

  • me27/07/2009 at 22:48

    steven, i love question 10 :)

  • Alianora La Canta27/07/2009 at 22:50

Just to say, having minimal sight in one eye isn’t necessarily a stopper of racing, a guy raced in Le Mans with only sight in one eye.

    Theres always hope! {Comment #228}

There is. The questions are whether any reduction in sight will a) be enough to classify as "partially sighted" (in which case Massa could be out of motor racing altogether for five years before being allowed back in*) and b) be enough to blunt his talent even if he misses out on that definition (in which case it would be a few races into his return to F1 before we knew).

Hopefully these worries will prove unfounded and I will keep my fingers crossed accordingly.

    * - Note that in the hypothetical case that Felipe was still F1-standard after those five years, he'd be allowed in even if he had no sight at all in one eye.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 22:51

I said I was answering questions tonight?

whenever it suits you sir. wednesday if you prefer.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 22:53

I said I was answering questions tonight?

Either way, I have to be up at half 5 tomorrow for work so I'm afraid tonight's a no-go. Wednesday's perfectly fine, though. :)

You were there when I asked it the first time. Were you not listening?

  • me27/07/2009 at 22:54

I know exactly the kind of answers I am going to get from it. It was deliberate

  • me27/07/2009 at 22:55

Anyways... twitter woke me up via phone. grr. Night.

    cheers lukeh.

we have banned chris humphreys for life, due to the fact he was to be making up fake commenters here, and then proceeding to have conversations with them (himself).

that's simply not on. apologies that he's hassling you. can i recommend reporting him to twitter and also blocking him, as we have done?

    sorry again.

I assume anyone who is planning to use music on a live show has to send the details to Christine before the event.

  • me27/07/2009 at 22:59

if possible yup. if it's a live show, and anything changes, telling us afterwards is fine also.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/07/2009 at 23:00

Can I just get a rain check on getting that other half hour slot that's vacant below my show? I'm planning on having some music in my show and the discussion on starting as a sim racer could go on a bit provided me and Gavin decide to get too carried away. If not, I'll figure out how to squeeze everything into 30 minutes :)

  • Steven Roy27/07/2009 at 23:01

I was thinking about the practicalities of playing it. If I play it from my PC is Skype going to pick it up with good enough quality to broadcast? Totally untechnically it would seem to make more sense for you to play any music to get the best quality

  • me27/07/2009 at 23:02

understood. that we can do. on the parade lap, giggles gives christine the last line that he intends to say, in order to cue up the next song.

    would that work?

  • Alianora La Canta27/07/2009 at 23:03

    It also happened to the dutch guy at Spyker a few years ago in France (might have been 2007) – he went on the track with the hose and Spyker were not banned. {Comment #373}

There were two good reasons for that:

    1) Albers never made it beyond the pit exit run-off area (OK, that was as far as it could have moved with a great big bendy thing hanging off the side...);

    2) The team considered Albers to be the sole reason the incident happened because it hadn't released him. As far as I'm aware, it's the only time in the history of F1 that a team has sent the bill for a penalty to the door of a driver...

Damn that sounds professional. I need to think about that because there is no way I will script anything that tightly. When I do presentations etc I never do word for word just general areas and waffle round them. I will find a way though

  • me27/07/2009 at 23:06

    This is not reliable.

I have a friend/aquantance that does some work for the BBC, i was talking to him about how much better the coverage is this year, and how great it is that we could watch it online ..

    Anyway, he said he overheard at the beeb that they not be broadcasting online next year as FOM are looking at doing something, and the bbc only have the online rights if FOM aren’t doing anything themselves. {Comment #426}

I hope that, if true, the same platform as the video clips are on isn't used. I've never managed to get those to load on my computer, so that would be the end of me seeing free practise...

Like i said... It is not reliable, although i wouldn't mind something from FOM, i would hope it would be more like the Iphone ap and not just a video feed online. Although that would be useful in some countries.

  • Nick27/07/2009 at 23:21

Right tonight has been a bit rubbish on my front, i have been kept away from the comments because of all sorts of issues.

On a completely separate note i discovered this weekend that Deaf people can drive every bit as well as those with hearing so i thought i should apologise for my comments last week, I was ignorant more than anything, but still not really an excuse.

    Anyway, Night all! :)

That was a LONG film. 6 hours and 20 minutes! 4 VHS tapes. *not available on dvd... :(8

    Utterly magnificent though.

If you can get hold of it - The Godfather - 1902-1959 - The Complete Epic is one of the best films I've ever seen!

I've seen The Godfather & The Godfather Part 2 so many times I've lost count. One day a friend lends me his set of the epic and I ended up watching it at least 3 times back to back over the week that I had it, FFC did a fantastic job of editing the movie in chronological order. If anybody ever has the chance to watch it that way don't pass it up.

He did add quite a bit of previously unseen material as well.

I really want a version of this to become available on DVD or Bluray.

I was hoping that when the Coppola Restoration came out they would have put that version out as well.
