Of course today all our thoughts are with Massa, and we're hoping for more good news updates from the hospital. However, it is still race day and we should still enjoy what we can of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Here's what we're talking about at the moment:

  • Alguersuari did pretty well, no? The engine failure scuppered him a bit, but even he says the aim of the weekend is simply to finish the race. I guess the big question now is whether Bourdais would have done well with the new car updates.
  • The McLarens didn't manage to keep up their Free Practice pace, but they didn't do so badly either. Both qualified in the top ten, and with the added benefit of KERS (are they the only ones using it now?) they could make some progress today.
  • The other major question is what the weather will be like. So far we have seen really hot conditions, and also some cooler and more windy conditions as well. The temperatures will make all the difference in the race, so I can't wait to see how that will pan out too.

That's all for now. If you're watching the race, please join us in the live comments, and let us know how you're watching. If not, you can tune in to the digest later to get a full recap of the action. I'll see you in the comments.

very quickly, before we sleeps. from claire on twitter:

"Rob [Smedley] has spoken to [Massa's] brother about ten mins ago and [Massa] is doing well. well. He is in a medical induced coma after the trauma to his head and the surgery to his skull which I think is normal after that sort of thing... but he is completely stable and the surgery went really well. It was so so scary today and I can imagine the fans were so upset - Rob was so shaken up about it and really upset. "

aww that's really comforting, thank you Mr C, i'll be able to sleep much better hearing that. Rob did look really upset.

At least the reports are being fairly positive. It was a massive accident and so many complications could still occur one has to remain worried. I remain hopefully all the while we get reports like this. However, it is clear the injuries were worse that what was first reported.

I think a lot of us jumped to conclusions. Mostly down to the sensationalist reporting by some of the more "respected" media outlets.

Let's hope he's alright, always seems like a decent bloke and a good racer too.

Except during races and live shows ;)

  • Nate25/07/2009 at 23:56

I think he would bring a lot more stability to the team, if things didn't go right for Villeneuve you could be sure he'd be up in arms over it.

Paired with a young US driver, Wurz could help direct the team for the first couple of years.

  • Steven Roy25/07/2009 at 23:57

Now I feel like an idiot. All is NOT good with Felipe, but it could be worse.........I should just ssh sometimes.

You can only comment on the info you have at the time. Hopefully he will be like Wendlinger and make a good recovery.

  • lou25/07/2009 at 23:59

Here I was talking to myself on the other form.

to answer your comment from the other thread.

Not to change subjects, but what does everything think of the report of Wurz maybe driving for USF1? I am trying to write a blog post about (killing time on a sunny Saturday) and trying to figured out everything he brings to the table in comparison to say JV.

I think Wurz would be much better than JV tbh, and i think it was the BBC that today during their build up had an interview with Peter Windsor who said although they wanted American drivers that there was no point rushing.I got the idea that maybe they'll be happy to wait for some american drivers rather than push them through, but make it their overall aim for the future of the team. Probably a little similar to the way VJ seems keen to give any Indian drivers a chance in the future.

  • Steven Roy25/07/2009 at 23:59

Since Dan has now changed days I will post this on this thread

I am surprised they have gone for someone with no American profile. That is clearly his biggest negative.

On the positive side he has more recent experience and McLaren were prepared to almost perpetually pay him 7 figures to develop their cars even when it meant building a special lengthened chassis for him. That tells you everything you need to know about ability, attitude etc.

The other thing worth considering is that he fronted a team that applied for a grid slot so he may have people and a budget from that, that can be made available to USF1.

  • Joe25/07/2009 at 23:59

Weren't Ferrari not using KERS here? If they were, wouldn't that have hindered the accident scene?

  • Nate25/07/2009 at 23:59

That's a good point Joe, isn't it mounted in the front of the car?

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 00:00

Weren't Ferrari not using KERS here? If they were, wouldn't that have hindered the accident scene?

    They were using KERS.

  • Joe26/07/2009 at 00:02

    They were using KERS.

    Oh.

So they can switch it off from the cockpit?

  • Bassano Clapper26/07/2009 at 00:03

So they can switch it off from the cockpit?

Does it not auto deplete on impact?

  • Nate26/07/2009 at 00:03

    Oh.

So they can switch it off from the cockpit?

I believe the marshals can also switch it off externally as with the Neutral button on the front.

  • Joe26/07/2009 at 00:04

Does it not auto deplete on impact?

That'd be pretty smart. I'd guess you're right.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 00:05

They couldn;t discharge the batteries though

  • Rich26/07/2009 at 00:06

My understanding is that Wurtz is on the shopping list while JV is not. It is based on wanting a driver with good technical skills, while the second driver will be less experience and preference for an "American". What I find interesting is I thought that Wurtz wanted to give up F1 due to family commitments etc.

  • Dan Brunell26/07/2009 at 00:13

I think that Wurz was more forced out at Williams due to the needs of Toyota more than he wanted to retire.

I think the other driver will be an American. I think the difference between the two nationalistic teams (Force India and USF1) is that the USF1 can draw off all the motorsports series in the US to pick driver to suit their needs while Force India have rather slim pickings in India.

Personally, I like the sound of an Alex Wurz / Graham Rahal combination.

  • Dan Brunell26/07/2009 at 00:19

Personally, I like the sound of an Alex Wurz / Graham Rahal combination.

To add. Having one driver work with the engineers and use the other seat to test out drivers to see if they cut it is smart. Not to be too much of a kool-aid drinker but I think that a pretty good plan for starting a new team.

  • Rich26/07/2009 at 00:20

I think that Wurz was more forced out at Williams due to the needs of Toyota more than he wanted to retire.

I feel that is a bit sad - I do hope he gets the USF1 drive - for the team to get up to speed it will be great.

    sorry what was that?

  • Dan Brunell26/07/2009 at 00:26

    sorry what was that?

Sorry, but it's apart of common American phrase. Now that I think about it, it rather a horrible phrase that is said in American vernacular.

    According to Urban Dictionary:

A reference to the 1978 cult mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown. Late in the year he then ordered his flock to commit suicide by drinking grape-flavored Kool-Aid laced with potassium cyanide. In what is now commonly called "the Jonestown Massacre", 913 of the 1100 Jonestown residents drank the Kool-Aid and died.

One lasting legacy of the Jonestown tragedy is the saying, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” This has come to mean, "Don’t trust any group you find to be a little on the kooky side." or "Whatever they tell you, don't believe it too strongly".

The phrase can also be used in the opposite sense to indicate that one has embraced a particular philosophy or perspective.

Alice: Hey, did you hear that Joe is working on the Nader campaign?

Bob: Yeah, he really drank the Kool-Aid on that one.

Chris: I'm thinking about attending a PETA rally

Donna: Whatever you do, don't drink the Kool-Aid!

I can't believe we've gone 14 years without something like this. Thinking about it... F1 has been extremely luck over the years. I know a lot of that is due to safety measures, quality of care and cars but one cannot deny that we've been luck. I can't imagine what the fans went through in the late sixties where a driver would be killed seemly ever 3rd or 4th race.

I was thinking on that earlier. F1 has become so safe today that the only serious accidents left are, well, what you should call proper accidents: things completely out of control in which really bad luck come into play. This is not to say that nothing else can be improved, but the days in which an evident failure in the design of the car or the circuit is the direct responsible for the dead of a driver are hopefully gone...

Out for at least 2 months - maybe the rest of the season. I hope he makes a full recovery. :) In the meantime, I'm guessing Ferrari will pick Gene to drive for at least Valencia. 3 Spaniards on the grid, imagine that.

I wonder if Massa will be fit and willing to drive in 2010, though.

I don't think this will change his approach to racing, at least we won't be scared by that. But if he's going to be a father, I guess having this accident now will put some second [thoughts] in his head...

That's what I was thinking. The injuries he sustained are also a bit tricky to manage as it recovers.

From a few baseball pitchers that have been hit in the eye and damaged the bone around the eye-socket like Felipe did, it always look longer to heal then what the doctors said. He is definitely out for the rest of the year in my view. I am actually worried about long term effects of the head and eye trauma.

Well, da Matta's recovery was quicker than expected, although it was the psychological effects that took very long - he didn't race again for 2 years.

Great, the Alonso rumors are going to go into overdrive.

Well, if it boils down to that, someone has to replace Felipe.

  • Jeremy26/07/2009 at 01:36

A reference to the 1978 cult mass-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown. Late in the year he then ordered his flock to commit suicide by drinking grape-flavored Kool-Aid laced with potassium cyanide. In what is now commonly called "the Jonestown Massacre", 913 of the 1100 Jonestown residents drank the Kool-Aid and died.

I thought it was flavor-aid, but nobody knew what that was so just used the name of the popular drink. Being in the Apple fan boy world, we hear this one all the time in relation to the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field (RDF).

So Ferrari could end up with two new drivers next year. If I was going to lose Massa, I'd probably offer Kimi a new contract so you have someone who has been there. I wouldn't offer him the same money he is on now though, so he'd probably turn it down.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 01:41

Kimi, you mean? There are a lot of free agents in the market right now. They can think long-term (hire Kubica for 3 years) or short-term (hire Heidfeld or Barrichello for a year to keep options open, especially with Vettel).

If I was being strict about it, he'd need second to have at least half the points - assuming Alonso doesn't score. If Alonso finishes 6th or higher later, Piquet can't meet that obligation whatever he does.

I think it is a rough concrete run off which the car bounced around on. Even on the onboard replay you can see the car bounce around a little bit once it hit the runoff. Not much but still enough to lift the tires off the ground.

Hate to say but no. We are running with 19 cars today. The way the rules are written, you have to qualify to race. If you are unable, then no one can take your place.

Mr C said 5live mentioned that someone can indeed replace Massa, but only from whoever is already on the grid. Ferrari declined to use that option, however.

You're totally right - he can't be seen, but I don't think anyone knows where he was other than not in any of the pictures. Some of the timing data (FIA) might be able to estimate where he was, but I'm sure one of the news reports today will have info like that. because we're all thinking it.

I think there is a good chance that Massa won't be back in F1 for the rest of this season. That is enough of an opportunity to shake someone (Alonso?) out of their contract.

Whatever happens I don't think it will Badoer or Gene.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 06:28

I haven't given a thought to who but i agree with you. massa might have brain damage, but they can't assess that for a couple of days (although you can get an idea quickly). I've heard no health update - i got freaked when i saw the austrian media last night using the word coma, but no other network used that word so not sure what was going on.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 06:28

    how was the play Alex?

  • Alex Andronov26/07/2009 at 06:34

i got freaked when i saw the austrian media last night using the word coma, but no other network used that word so not sure what was going on.

It will be an induced coma. It's a standard operating procedure kind of thing. It is almost literally like a reboot for the brain. You induce a coma to stop the brain working while there is too much swelling which could damage it. Then you reverse the process to wake them up. Also because you wouldn't get a good brain scan like that.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 06:38

It will be an induced coma.

yeah that's what i figured it was but my german does not cover the word "induced" ;) was just relieved when quick scans of the italian/german/swiss tv networks kept saying he was serious but stable with no new developments. I'm quite relieved.

there's a lot of talk today about a safety review. I think you should have a review after every crash where the little light goes on in the cockpit. When I worked in occupational health and safety, one of the key concepts was constantly reviewing existing legislation/protocols to see what could be changed. would any change have stopped the incident in question. a review doesn't have to mean a complete change of the rule, but if F1 is serious about safety, then an open review (like what NASA have done after deaths) should be standard after these kinds of things.

  • Alex Andronov26/07/2009 at 06:39

    how was the play Alex?

It was really very good. I really like Priestly it would appear. I liked An Inspector Calls when I saw it about 10 years ago. It was very well acted and directed, but the set designer + director worked together to make several highly effective theatrical effects. Including something I have never seen before... (Which doesn't happen much in the theatre for me any more)...

They managed to stop time. Some papers came spilling off a table and half way through falling froze and the woman who knocked them froze as well. It worked really well. There were similar amazing visual sequences at the end of the second and third acts. It was very well done.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 06:41

massa latest on the bbc site. This morning, I'm thinking no news is good news. Yesterday afternoon's surgery went "positive" and well and he's under anaesthetic and they'll wake him up today. so as we discussed earlier, it would appear to be an induced coma.

the ferrari team have said they will issue a statement again late in the morning, but i suspect there will be news coming out of the hospital before that. Massa is doing well :)

They will still be having a safety review after the F2 crash last week.

The problem is, how do you stop debris falling from the Car? Short of tethering every single part of the car, which whould be extremely difficult.

I love the world created podsafe music, but it's one reason I didn't want to create a show for next week - I barely have time to listen to music I like, let alone. I'm quite happy for different sources to select my music for me. good luck :)

The problem is, how do you stop debris falling from the Car? Short of tethering every single part of the car, which whould be extremely difficult.

I agree - I'm curious how long that part was there for. I guess Brawn had no way of knowing that a piece was missing from their car, only that they had a problem. But maybe the suspensions will have to be tested more/differently in the future. the same way as the test wheel tethers and things. the red bull crash last year (DC) where the car looked really bad but everything stayed tied together shows what testing has brought to safety. maybe there are parts of the car that they might have to design this way. F1 is a dangerous sport, but Massa is a lucky man today.

I moved to iodapromonet, I got the chance to play 808 State and Propaganda, as some of the old ZTT albums are on there. Can't play everything, but selected tracks.

Take into consideration the spring doesn't have to bounce that high to reach face level in an F1 Cockpit. They could ask them to shroud springs in a rubber sleeve, which contains it and stops it from falling out.

I come out with some weird solutions. I posted one yesterday re: the F2 accident last week.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 07:05

    Morning, everyone.

    http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2009/815/681.html

A bit disturbing, this. Apparently, the spring hit Massa because it bounced back from the new-for-2008 raised side protection. Had it not been raised, the debris would've cleared Massa.

  • Alex Andronov26/07/2009 at 07:07

It would appear that the spring was in a shroud but that it escaped.

But that thing is there for a good reason but safety is about reviewing things. Some safety features do cause problems, eg airbags in "normal" cars cause lots of face injuries, but we're all better off with them. I'm impressed that f1 has that stuff up there.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 07:16

I guess the question is, are the side protections too high now? No question, it's needed for safety, but can there be such a thing as too high?

  • startledbunny26/07/2009 at 07:20

I guess the question is, are the side protections too high now? No question, it's needed for safety, but can there be such a thing as too high?

If it had been lower, the spring would have still hit Massa. They've got to be high. Short of enclosing the cockpit, there isn't a lot you could do. There has to be a solution though.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 07:20

I guess the question is, are the side protections too high now? No question, it's needed for safety, but can there be such a thing as too high?

There can be a question of too high. For once I have every confidence in all the groups involved in F1 to be thinking the same thing and they'll be asking the same question.

  • startledbunny26/07/2009 at 07:21

If it had been lower, the spring would have still hit Massa.

As I reread that I realised his injury would have been less serious.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 07:21

Not exactly. If you look at the image, the spring hit right at the top edge of the side protection. So had it been lower, there would've been nothing for the spring to hit.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 07:21

As I reread that I realised his injury would have been less serious.

    Yup, agreed.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 07:22

There has to be a solution though.

I suspect we might see more track inspections between sessions. That's not going to stop every incident, but maybe just a though.

  • startledbunny26/07/2009 at 07:26

So had it been lower, there would've been nothing for the spring to hit.

If you look at an action shot of an F1 car racing, there isn't much distance between the helmet and the side protection. He still would have been struck by the spring, just perhaps not as bad.

not working from home - in the office. That's why the idea of going to back to bed is appealing but the bed is too far away. but it's not all doom and gloom because I've got the place to myself and doing a mix of work/non-work.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 08:56

    from james allen's blog.

It bounced down the road for four seconds and hit Massa in the head. He was briefly knocked unconscious and his feet went onto the brake and throttle simultaneously.

so this appears to answer the question of where Barrichello was on the track and how long the part had been on the track.

The data says that he applied 60bar of pressure to the brake, which is the equivalent of laying his foot on it gently, while the throttle was effectively jammed on.

interesting. so the "full brake" that was shown in the telemetry would suggest that it's full because the brake is on, not because the brake pedal is to the floor 100%.

We need to contain our patience, hope and just wish (or pray) the situation improves. All the while the reports of stable and no complications are coming, through they seem measured and a bit vague, they do contain encouragement that a full recovery will be achieved. That conditions at least remains stable for the first 48 hours is critical though. After that it will be attentive medical care to ensure no clots occur and to avoid meningitis.

right, laptop is mine for the evening

nice. do you need any help with the reboot? if so, describe the issues and we might be able to help? how far does the boot process go etc.

Basically when I turned it on it came up with the 'windows did not shut down properly' screen with start in safe mode, start with last good known settings, start windows normally options and regardless of what i choose it then goes into the screen with the vista loading bar, then it shuts itself off and turns itself back on and goes back to the 'windows did not shut down properly' screen. I figure if anyone can help, it'll be someone at SPC.

  • startledbunny26/07/2009 at 09:23

Intensive Care Units are amazing. A nurse is assigned to watch you and you alone constantly. Checking all your vital signs, adjusting the various drips minute by minute, taking blood tests every hour or so. I know this because my Mum was in one for a couple of weeks.

My dads only complaint when he was in one was that there was only curtains separating the beds so he didn't enjoy one night when he was trying to sleep the guy next to him was bought in from a serious car crash and his heart kept stopping so there was a lot of activity around him. But yes, lots of staff and the second anything happens they are onto it.

The question is CAN you select that option and it works. I'm just thinking how we can do this. I've never had to do a line by line with Vista but it's a good start to get a command prompt. i agree with journeyer that something looks to have been corrupted, eg driver or something that is required so no setting may have been changed but something is required that is not there, you're stuffed. it is recoverable. don't freak out.

its a "real laptop", sony vaio. I know it is recoverable because my old laptop did this and could be restored with the system discs, but my system discs for this one are in new zealand.

i'm old school ;) another option is to run a small linux of a USB (eg DSL=Damn Small Linux) and repair it from there. but let the shop sort it out ;)

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 09:31

better idea - get it sent to you by courier. yup, any repair place should be fine as long as you get your own discs back.

bah, if i had the discs I wouldn't pay someone else to do it!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/07/2009 at 09:31

Morning guys, how are we all? Any more news on Massa? :)

    Morning!

Funnily enough I just checked AUTOSPORT: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77304

    Sounds like good news...

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 09:31

Morning guys, how are we all? Any more news on Massa? :)

nothing new. induced coma. no complications over night. will be woken up for a cat scan later this morning/today. good news considering :)

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 09:32

you don't necessarily need your own system discs. does VAIO have its own CDs? if so, i suggest you call up or visit the nearest Sony Service Center.

i looked online a while back to see if i could download them anywhere but they didnt have anything compatible with my model number.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/07/2009 at 09:32

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/07/2009 at 09:32

hehe no floppy drive, just 2x dvds.

just download windows 7 beta release candidate 1 and maybe use that for repair? or install over the top?

DOwnload Moblin onto a flash drive and use that as your OS...

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 09:32

bah, if i had the discs I wouldn't pay someone else to do it!

but you don't ;) CDs always go with me, even if the computer doesn't, they always come in handy for someone.

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 09:34

but you don't CDs always go with me, even if the computer doesn't, they always come in handy for someone.

I am sure I packed my spindle of 'computer relevant cds' when I moved but its nowhere in my flat so it must be in New Zealand somewhere! I asked my parents but all my stuff is in boxes and they didn't want to go through them.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 09:34

just download windows 7 beta release candidate 1 and maybe use that for repair? or install over the top?

i wouldn't use a different OS. could result in loss of data on hard drive. it shouldn't but it could.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 09:36

I asked my parents but all my stuff is in boxes and they didn't want to go through them.

I've got all my boxes itemised to make this easy for them ;) They've never had to, but I'm prepared if I ever need anything.

I'm going outside for a bit. Been here a while today. When is parade lap? (how many minutes, the time will be confusing for me)

  • Rich26/07/2009 at 09:37

DOwnload Moblin onto a flash drive and use that as your OS...

I always have both a Linux Live CD or a USB with my laptop so if Windows does a wobbly I can boot into another OS. LinuxMint is particularly useful as it has all the drivers for the Internet (Java, Flash Shockwave) and codecs for videos. In my experience it is the only "complete" OS currently available.

  • Journeyer26/07/2009 at 09:37

i wouldn't use a different OS. could result in loss of data on hard drive. it shouldn't but it could.

If you use a live CD USB there is no risk, just make sure you do not do an install though once in the OS.

I have never heard the grapefruit part of that cure before. Is it something to do with the way the mouth and throat move when you say the word?

Lou is going to be sidepodradio's on the spot correspondent. A sidepodoutsidebroadcast

  • Alex Andronov26/07/2009 at 14:59

Lou I actually meant to talk to you... I know you don't get down to London that much but I saw a play last night at the National Theater called Time and the Conways... I know you're really into your stage production this play was really really well done for that. It was really great for other reasons too. But I thought I might mention it to you.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/07/2009 at 14:59

Managed to get down to a 2'11 finally at Brno in t'Volvo. That was on my first flying lap when the tyre were fresh. After a few laps I can run consistently in the 2'12s. Compare that with my teammate who's best time is a 2'10. This wheel really does do wonders for your driving! :D

  • Bassano Clapper26/07/2009 at 14:59

Did anyone else think that DC isn't just pro Red Bull, but that he likes Mark Webber more.

He's probably closer to the ex-team mate than the young pup

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 14:59

Did anyone else think that DC isn't just pro Red Bull, but that he likes Mark Webber more.

I thought that in Germany and today

  • Jon Waldock26/07/2009 at 14:59

    oh. hmmm....

it will be like going to a gp, and him only doing one lap, with him going past you once, maybe twice if you move

  • Bassano Clapper26/07/2009 at 15:00

You're gonna miss Sidepodradio then? :(

    Good idea

  • Alex Andronov26/07/2009 at 15:00

I thought that in Germany and today

Absolutely. He has said nice things about Vettel only when it isn't against Webber.

  • Alison26/07/2009 at 15:00

I thought that in Germany and today

The way he was so dismissive of the 1st corner stuff for Seb when he was mouthing off so much in Mark's favour last week.

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 15:01

He's probably closer to the ex-team mate than the young pup

the young pup is probably the reason he "chose" to retire.

  • lou26/07/2009 at 15:01

    London is the bestest!

It's on the Southbank near Waterloo Train station. Lovely part of London for evening wonders along the river (you can see briefly from my video last night).

Tickets were £15 each but it was part of a promotion... They may be more now

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 15:10

loads of blue sky in the 10 minutes before the start. is there a time limit for bikes to set the tyres (eg f1 is 3 minutes)?

You should always drag someone else out of their bed when you have to get up early. It doesn't seem so bad that way.

Do you know the route. Change over areas are your best bet of seeing Jenson I would have thought.

  • Jon Waldock26/07/2009 at 15:13

Do you know the route. Change over areas are your best bet of seeing Jenson I would have thought.

i'd say the finish line is the best chance, transition areas are huge, and jenson wont be part of the elites, so he could be anywhere. find someone on the running course, nearer the end would be your best bet

  • lou26/07/2009 at 15:14

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:27

They are the next generation Posh and Becks aren't they!

    Not famous enough for that.

Did anyone see the Becks incident in LA? He is now playing half season for LA Galaxy and half for Milan in Italy to make sure he keeps his England place. Some Galaxy fans took exception to him doing this so at his first game back there as he was going off at half time he had a heated argument with a group of them.

Major League Soccer decided this was a breach of discpline and fined him for it. He make £50 million a season for playing there and they fined him $1000.

Last news was no complications over night and this morning's CT scan was negative which is good. He is being kept in an induced coma for 48 hours which is pretty normal.

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 15:29

hmm. not something that's going to be broadcast probably. remind me in a few days.

yeah I don't expect to see it anywhere. Unless its like the drivers good luck messages for Kimi when he got married and it randomly shows up on youtube years later.

  • Alison26/07/2009 at 15:29

    So it's bad concussion then??

That's something Eddie Jordan got wrong at least.... "Knock on the chin" my foot

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:29

Championship drive of a recovery there - he still beats all his fellow contenders!

    He is ridiculously good.

Last news was no complications over night and this morning's CT scan was negative which is good. He is being kept in an induced coma for 48 hours which is pretty normal.

delivery KFC. I'd officially have to be removed from my house with a forklift if I lived somewhere where they did that.

  • lou26/07/2009 at 15:31

italian papers basically say the CT scan means "no brain damage", but serious and stable.

the BBC today said that everything the doctors expected to happen after the surgery (recovery wise) has happened. Looks like he's in really good hands.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:31

    So it's bad concussion then??

He has two skull fractures and concussion. It is pretty bad but we won;t know how bad for a while yet. He won't drive again this year though

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:32

Is there a show planned for 6-ish today?

    Yep

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 15:32

He has two skull fractures and concussion. It is pretty bad but we won;t know how bad for a while yet. He won't drive again this year though

some bone was removed from his fractured eye socket.

  • lou26/07/2009 at 15:33

some bone was removed from his fractured eye socket.

has that been confirmed? not sure Ferrari have actually specified what surgery he had?

  • Alison26/07/2009 at 15:33

Inducing a coma certainly isn't routine. There are a lot of risks associated with the sedatives which are only worth it if the risk of severe brain swelling is high. They do it to minimise risk of long-term brain damage.

They were all very flippant yesterday about him being okay that's all. I'm just shocked that it's so serious after all.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:33

the BBC today said that everything the doctors expected to happen after the surgery (recovery wise) has happened. Looks like he's in really good hands.

Sid Watkins was heading to Hungary last night and there is no-one better or better connected to get things done. Even Bernie won't argue with the Prof.

    Good stuff

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 15:34

has that been confirmed? not sure Ferrari have actually specified what surgery he had?

ferrari have been light but the italian media quoted sources about the eye socket. i'd have no doubts over it. but i was the one that reported honda being saved back in december ;)

Inducing a coma certainly isn't routine. There are a lot of risks associated with the sedatives which are only worth it if the risk of severe brain swelling is high. They do it to minimise risk of long-term brain damage.

have a read of the post's Joe has put up about it. - http://joesaward.wordpress.com/ - he explains the reasons for sedating him very well.

I said that it was routine earlier. What I meant at the time was that given the trauma and the swelling it was common, rather than unusual.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:35

They were all very flippant yesterday about him being okay that's all. I'm just shocked that it's so serious after all.

The first report I saw yesterday afternoon said he had a cut near his eye and after that it just got worse and worse.

I have to say that when I heard that he'd been hit in the head and then he'd pressed both the accelerator and the brake and hadn't let go of the wheel it worried me quite a lot. That was the moment that I panicked.

When I stopped paying attention to F1 yesterday they said that he'd cut himself and was waving as he got into the ambulance. I'm just horrified by how serious it's turned out to be.

  • Lukeh26/07/2009 at 15:40

okay... so i'm going to regret this but....who's Sid Watkins?

He forced many tracks and thngs within F1 to improve medical facilities, improve safety, etc. Someone else can explain it better than me I'm sure I'm doing massive injustice with this poor explanantion but he is just the man in terms of medical and safety historyn within f1 I'd say.

I believe his officia role before he retired in 05 was Safety Delegate or Medical Delegate but I may be wrong.

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 15:40

okay... so i'm going to regret this but....who's Sid Watkins?

F1 Medical guru who put into motion much of the medical safety they use. He was met with a lot of resistance when he started but his insistence on proper facilities must have saved many lives. His books are fantastic reads.

it was not a lot of waving. i saw what people talked about, but i think there were trying to make it sounds better than it was.

the live video of the incident coverage on italian tv is available but not sure if works for non italians (most links i post do so it might). there is some some different footage (not a lot new) because this wasn't the same as the bbc.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:43

okay... so i'm going to regret this but....who's Sid Watkins?

    Safety has improved that much?

The Prof was the guy who Bernie asked to take responsibility for medical care in F1 in the late 70s. At that time it was quiet common for circuit facilities to be first aiders in a tent. Eveything that has happened since has been due to the Prof. He is proper famous.

He brought in proper circuit medical facilities, medical cars etc. He started inspecting local hospitals to make sure they were able to cope with receiving casualties from circuits and treating them. If the Prof wasn't happy the circuit didn't get a race regardless what they were paying Bernie.

He retired from going to the races a few years ago but is head of the FIA safety whatever thing.

He is a professor of neuro-surgery. etc etc

He also has a fabulous sense of humour. When Mercedes approached him to ask if there was anything else h would like in the medical car as a joke he said a bottle of single malt and a humidor for his cigars. He got a humidor and a little drinks cabinet.

It is reasonably common in motor racing crashes where serious head injuries occur and where there may be brain swelling. Obviously like everything else common in F1 terms does not necessarily reflect real life.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:47

In simple terms as far as F1 safety is concerned we have to thank Jackie Stewart and Sid Watkins. Many others contributed but those two made things happen.

He had to battle the other drivers as well as everyone else. They said if he was so scared he should quit. Of course once he beat them all by four minutes round the Nurburgring with a broken wrist they couldn't really use that argument any more.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/07/2009 at 15:56

    Just had a thought.

THAT WOMAN was seen at almost every race last year when Lewis was winning. This year, she's hardly seen at all until Lewis gets a sniff of victory and then she's all over the cameras...

Coincidence? C'mon Lewis, there's plenty of other nice ladies your age who like F1 out there!

She's been at races when he was doing badly this season though. It's just that they've not been giving her camera time. I find her awful as a person, but I think that's unfair.

  • Steven Roy26/07/2009 at 15:58

So they think all the damage to Felipe was done when he was initially struck by the spring rather than in the crash itself?

I don't think so. I am only going by what I saw on video. To me the spring took out the screw that held his visor on. With the visor flapping around he hit the corner of the steering wheel with his head.

I think he was knocked out by the spring but the cut and front skull damage could hav been done by the wheel or the initial impact. He also has a fracture at the base of his skull which I assume came from the recoil ofthe seat belts banging his head against the head restraint.

Team Victory or Bust had a very poor race. The team was badly let down by a facical pit stop that cost Fernando Alonso his best result of the season and by Jenson Button making a stupid tyre choice. The biggest let down though was Sebastian Vettel parking his car to play with his little brother's radio controlled Enzo.

Lewis Hamilton delivered a great win for the team and was ably backed up by Timo Glock

    http://twitter.com/NobleF1/status/2854817272

own up, who ran over the sensor?

    ....oh wait.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 16:28

fines are OK. time penalties less so.

yeah it's late to do this now, but nothing surprises me. i expect fines. which are stupid and useless in my opinion. i love how in some countries, eg norway, speeding fines are tied to a % of a person's income. so rich people don't speed because it will only cost them 100€. great idea. i hope more countries embrace the idea.

  • Scott in Italy26/07/2009 at 16:30

own up, who ran over the sensor?

    incredible technology.

  • lou26/07/2009 at 16:30

Team Victory or Bust had a very poor race. The team was badly let down by a facical pit stop that cost Fernando Alonso his best result of the season and by Jenson Button making a stupid tyre choice. The biggest let down though was Sebastian Vettel parking his car to play with his little brother's radio controlled Enzo.

    #fr

ooops missed the last bit of Steven's comment

Lewis Hamilton delivered a great win for the team and was ably backed up by Timo Glock

  • Alianora La Canta26/07/2009 at 16:30

    So Ferrari could end up with two new drivers next year. If I was going to lose Massa, I’d probably offer Kimi a new contract so you have someone who has been there. I wouldn’t offer him the same money he is on now though, so he’d probably turn it down. {Comment #104}

Kimi's got a contract until 2010. I don't think Ferrari can change the salary, but it won't have to do anything to ensure Raikkonen's presence on the team.

  • Amy26/07/2009 at 16:30

i think that's fair enough. still want to know why webber was investigated mid race but kimi's was left until after the race.

A disastrous weekend for RossoCorse, after Massa's crash in qualifying and poor races by Alonso, Heifeld and Barrichello. However, the team direction wants to assure everybody that we back our drivers 100%, and it will decide only the week before Valencia it's replacement for Massa. Leaving the car free as a tribute to him is also a possibility. At the moment, our thoughts are with him and his family and we expect to see him well and ready to race soon.

A reprimand is the lowest formal penalty that can be given for an incident. If you get two in a season, the stewards/governing body is permitted to take that into account when deciding on the penalty for the second incident (though in practise the two incidents need to be of similar type for an escalation of penalty to be triggered).

not yet. they're journos saying just what we are.

they know tons of off-the-record stuff. in a case like this, they probably know more than we do.

sure they know more than us. but journos leaving a story "open" and creating intrigue and interest is a classic journalism. i'm not saying they don't know it will happen, but i'm not overreading this story - but you can ;)

I'm guessing Mark's was more intentional than Kimi's. Hard to describe it, but there you go.

Point from Keith C re: Renault's ban:

I broadly agree - this is a very harsh penalty, but if the teams were warned this sort of thing wasn’t going to be tolerated any more (and Red Bull’s punishment at Melbourne [with Vettel] suggests that is the case) then that’s a different matter.

    Good point, there.

I think the offense is Alonso driving back to the pits on 3 wheels. Vettel was given a 10-place penalty for doing it in Australia - and as Keith C said, the teams may have been warned not to try it again.

LCM Dragons - Fantastic! 701 points thanks to an inspired decision to include both Kovalainen and Rosberg. With Button, Trulli and Nakajima putting in reasonable scores and Fisichella finishing somewhere other than last, it's LCM's best result since Australia, and good for 120th in the entire competition (for this race, at any rate).

LCM Barato - 474 points is below-par for this team. Nakajima's good run was cancelled out by Sutil's early retirement, while everyone else queued. When four of your team's five finishers cross the line in a loose queue of 11-12-13-14, you know your team's having a bad day...

LCM Caro - 241 points. Rubbish! Just Rubbish! That's despite the team including points-scoring Jenson Button. The blame for this can be pointed squarely at Vettel's suspension, which caused an early bath and few points from his quarter. The thing about having a team with only two drivers is that it tends not to thrive when one of them obtains a DNF...

LCM Aléman - 449 points is not like this team at all. Its worst score since Malaysia (when few points were given for laps completed). Two of the five (Sutil and Vettel) were among the three retirements. Also, Heidfeld's BMW simply wasn't up to the pace. The team was largely saved by Rosberg and Glock, who got 280 points between them.

LCM Fire Lizard - 534 points is a very nice tally, despite Sutil not finishing the race. However, Fisichella finished and passed Buemi, Trulli and Button turned in respectable races and Hamilton was nice enough to win :)

  • Alianora La Canta26/07/2009 at 17:18

    #fr (Initial driver changes)

LCM Barato, in the light of Renault's suspension, needed modifying. Out went Piquet Jr. and in came Sebastien Buemi. There is now $5m of spare change in the team.

LCM Caro and LCM Aléman remain unchanged.

LCM Dragons and LCM Fire Lizard will be modified according to the results of Friday practise. Since Massa and the Renault drivers do not feature in either team, no changes are forced to happen.

I didn't think Sid had retired. He's been on the Expert Advisory Group for safety since 2004 and since he left F1 he's been concentrating on that side of the safety equation.

It might turn out to be a show full of non-F1 sim racing stuff, but there is a great looking 2009 mod in the works so will look to give that a mention.

Tis all good. Mr C's cooking show will contain very few references to F1, I reckon. Except maybe: This is turning out a bit Piquet. ;)

  • Lukeh26/07/2009 at 20:33

I should say my half hour is completely F1. Every single bit of it. consider it a light hearted look at the sport and whatnot. :)

Hopefully it'll be alright but so far it seems solid stuff! Part of it will be the voicemail I sent a few weeks ago that was like... 5 minutes long but it seems better to do it there than waste Debrief time, plus it fits in v.well.

    I just don't care anymore.

Thwax can do whatever he wants to the sport.

    Other Motorsport fills the void?

  • me26/07/2009 at 20:47

how long is your contract with the bbc?..

me too! her cookies were delicious!

To be honest, there's not been that massive political row recently. Everything seems to have gone quiet on that front and now it just seems to be about the racing again.

  • Bassano Clapper26/07/2009 at 20:48

aren't they just during the race?

They have rolling replay highlights for hours

  • Flibster26/07/2009 at 20:49

    Other Motorsport fills the void?

Nope. Grand Prix Legends/Toca RD3/ GP4 aren't even installed anymore.

Although - I did see this the other day and get a warm fuzzy"I want" feeling

  • Scott Woodwiss26/07/2009 at 20:49

Just to check, is the meetup at Classic Team Lotus still going to happen? I'm still quite looking forward to that.

Is there nothing we can do to help? :(

  • lou26/07/2009 at 20:50

    why haven't you quite yet?

    something like that

what about, how tough was the competition for your job? and how much did you pay was it a surprise to get the call telling you you got it?

A good flight sim when you have the proper controls is awesome

    Titanium springs, fool!

  • Scott Woodwiss26/07/2009 at 20:53

I find that helps. I tend to go into phases where I'm into one form of motorsport for a while and then another the next. Right now, it's F1 but I'm starting to get into that classic IMSA Camel GT/ Trans-am stuff.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/07/2009 at 21:04

    I know, but it's good?

Yeah, from what I've played of it it's accurate. You only need to probably turn about 45 degrees at max and that's enough. It's all about precision really, which it's good at.

    Is it any co-incidence that Google ends in ogle? {Comment #837}

Yes. The inventors of Google wanted to call it after a huge number (1 with 100 zeros following it*) and didn't have a good enough dictionary...

On the upside, they did end up with a brand name they could copyright!

    It's not that obscure

yeah. i think we concluded we weren't smart enough to explain it. unless anyone has had new thoughts?

  • Andy Taylor26/07/2009 at 21:38

    Mac's don't have # keys?

They do on US models, you just press shift 3 for a pound sign (£) and alt 3 for a #.

I know the Mac is better. That doesn't mean I have to prefer it.

    i think also...

    - when something goes wrong with your pc, you say "mr. c help".

    - when something goes wrong with your mac, you say "mr. c help".

the resolution is always the same.

if you were to have to solve either issue on your lonesome...

If you lived through what I do with this nonsense should-be-called-the-opposite-of-logic software on a daily basis, you might not say that.

I have to admit I don't use Logic at all, but I have colleagues who do and swear by it. If you could be a bit more specific about what the issues are, perhaps I can help resolve them?

    what happened to their pace this weekend? {Comment #878}

Well, they were supposed to have upgrades, but they also had to bring a load of modifications to cool the cars (which the race showed weren't sufficient for Sutil's water cooling system). Maybe the cooling stuff outweighted the upgrades?

    Cement spreader width

    ahh. could well be.

  • Andy Taylor26/07/2009 at 21:44

    that's silly.

Why? The Mac keyboard shortcuts are generally more elegant. For example.to type an acute accent, you type alt-e and then the letter you want to have the accent. It actually shows you on screen the accent with no letter below it. So much easier than having to remember Alt-0136 or whatever it is on a PC.

I don't even mind the @ key being in the "wrong place", like 2 finger scrolling, I miss it when using a PC laptop.

  • Christine26/07/2009 at 21:44

I have to admit I don't use Logic at all, but I have colleagues who do and swear by it. If you could be a bit more specific about what the issues are, perhaps I can help resolve them?

Many, many, many things. Two very specific examples:

    1) I edit all night, and upon export, it adds silence at the beginning and cuts the end off.

    2) Sometimes when I try and normalise a track, the option is greyed out for no reason. I restart the project, the option is there.

It's genius software but very, very flawed.

  • me26/07/2009 at 21:44

WOuld it have slowed him down and would that have helped?

the problem wasn't the speed that he hit the barriers was it?

  • Andy Taylor26/07/2009 at 21:45

Which lends weight to my theory as the car would be bouncing at a constant(ish) natural frequency.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/07/2009 at 21:46

WOuld it have slowed him down and would that have helped?

the problem wasn't the speed that he hit the barriers was it?

Wasn't the impact with the wall the reason he broke the back of his skull?

  • Bassano Clapper26/07/2009 at 21:46

WOuld it have slowed him down and would that have helped?

I did wonder, if his helmet hitting the steering wheel that did the damage

The suspension component impact maybe just dislodging the visor and stunning him

i suppose to me i find it easier to hit a key than remember any kinda shortcut... i still want a mac though...

agreed. it's seems more likely than an illegal braking system.
