Yesterday was definitely a day of rest in Sidepodcast Towers, but having said that Mr C just keeps on coding. I was busy trying not to fall asleep all day, whilst some new commenting updates were in the works. I'll leave him to tell you more when the updates go live, but keep your eyes peeled. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The reason I'm so tired is thanks to the most excellent evening out in London, listening to Joe talking. So far we've heard all good things from the people who went, and I'm hoping we'll have some blog posts and photos to share with you soon. Lou has been posting a couple on her Twitpic account, though, including ones of me looking ever so thoughtful as I kept the comments updated. Turkey Machine has also written a quick post about his evening.
  • I caught up with a couple of days of testing news yesterday, and posted two F1 Minute episodes. The first talks of Glock at Virgin - he's enjoying being the number one - and the second is about Schumi's predictions - he's changed his mind. I love the idea that Michael might have suddenly realised he said something he shouldn't have.
  • Whilst we're on the subject of testing, I hope you're keeping an eye on Gavin's summaries after each day, as well as the updates over on Viva F1. Maverick and Gavin both use lots of pretty graphs, and now we're at Barcelona and conclusions can be drawn from what we're seeing out on track, it's worth looking deeper at the statistics. We'll be asking for your predictions soon enough!

That's all for now. Let us know how your weekend is going and what you're up to, and I will see you in the comments.

I love the idea that Michael might have suddenly realised he said something he shouldn't have.

IIRC, he said in 1996 (first year at Ferrari) that they wouldn't be challenging for much. So I don't think he hesitates to say it as it is if they do suck. On the other hand, I also remember him saying that they exceeded initial expectations (of actually being midfield) in 1997, so if he's become more positive, there is probably at least some proof behind it.

I went to play skittles with a group from work. I was dreading it but actually it wasn't bad at all. I came 9th out 12 and top rookie!

There were actually a few there of my age group (albeit the bosses son and daughter and her bloke) so it wasn't just me and people much older.

I think it has more to do with obscene expectations. Thanks to her super-massive-huge following, there is an unrealistic belief that she would instantly be up front, which simply doesn't happen.

Hornish Jr, Franchitti and Montoya and so many others all showed that jumped from a single-seater to a Stock Car does not create a winner overnight - did anyone happen to hear Darrell Waltrip's comments about Franchitti last week?

its amazing how far they can travel, they were estimating the wave from the quake to hit New Zealand 15 hours after the event.

One of my friends is in Chile at the moment so I was very happy to hear he is OK.

Clearly they need to have a word with USF1.

I had about a million new years resolutions that lasted about a day, as they always do. When I got back from NZ I kept quite normal hours for about 6 weeks before I went back to being a night owl.

    how do you get promoted?

  • Amy28/02/2010 at 10:50

    ooh there are levels?

the 4 slams are the highest, then there are the 1000 level 'masters' then the 500 level events and the lowest is the 250s. I'm not really sure how they decide what is at what level but Dubai almost lost their tournament all together after the visa drama last year.

Really interesting that Ferrari found the need to downplay Massa's decent showing this morning...

Are they suggesting that Felipe was on fumes and the others were not?....

They said this before Lewis did his low fuel run...

"InsideFerrari: Last half an hour looked like a Q3 session. Felipe has the best time but does not mean he's necessarily the quickest. "

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:41

It strikes me that as your work becomes popular, the moderation process becomes ever more daunting.

    He certainly does :D

morning all, just catching up with live commenting feedback. will blog about changes shortly, please yell if anything is completely broken for you.

I was catching up with comments earlier and noticed it popped up with 'Pending'. That was pretty cool :)

  • Janna28/02/2010 at 13:42

    pls :)

That's interesting, comment pending box comes up faster on normal daily than it does on doohickey. All seems to be working ok in Chrome

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:44

I was catching up with comments earlier and noticed it popped up with 'Pending'. That was pretty cool :)

i can't remember if i said last night, but the "P" key will load pending comments (when you're not in the middle of typing a comment), and "Ctrl+Return" will post a comment (when you are typing a comment).

    shortcuts rule!

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:45

    Ha ha

You're gonna need a page with that on 'cos I never use them, 'cos I don't know what they all are

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:46

    shortcuts rule!

At some point in the future could [someone] do a wiki page of keyboard shortcuts that work for doohickey/lclt?

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:46

You're gonna need a page with that on 'cos I never use them, 'cos I don't know what they all are

    Spooky :D

will do. just playing around and seeing which ones work at the moment methinks. ctrl+return is my fav though (may have stolen from wave at the request of giggles).

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 13:47

    Well, I'll be darned. :D

Wait, is this for Ye Olde or Doohickey?

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:47

    Cmd Enter the Mac equivalent?

  • Pat W28/02/2010 at 13:48

I just tried to write a comment saying I like the idea of ctrl-return, by using ctrl-return to post it... and it didn't post, so is that not applicable to doohickey or am I doing it wrong? :-)

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:48

Wait, is this for Ye Olde or Doohickey?

ye olde is getting all the updates at the moment. doohickey updates to follow in about two weeks.

ye olde also has twitter "sharing" links on rollover.

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 13:49

    Ye awesome.

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:49

    Cmd Enter the Mac equivalent?

nope, on all platforms and all browsers, it should be Ctrl + Return.

    (Ctrl+I makes text italic btw)

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:49

ye olde is getting all the updates at the moment.

Do a lot of people still use Ye Olde?

I guess for non-regular commenters, it's the folk reading the blog who want to pass the odd remark on what they have read

    Correct?

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:50

    (Ctrl+I makes text italic btw)

    That one I know, Ctrl+B=Bold

  • Nick in Dubai28/02/2010 at 13:50

ye olde is getting all the updates at the moment. doohickey updates to follow in about two weeks.

If ye olde has been updated is it still ye olde?

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 13:50

    (Ctrl+I makes text italic btw)

Hmmm. Does it override browser shortcuts?

Also, I'm guessing by the same logic that Ctrl+B makes text bold?

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 13:51

If ye olde has been updated is it still ye olde?

    Ye not so olde? :D

    call this encouragement ;)

i have no idea, we don't track stats to that level. the plan is to make the best commenting experience possible and "ye olde comments" was a clean slate to reinvent things.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:51

If ye olde has been updated is it still ye olde?

I like to call it Comments Classic ;)

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:51

If ye olde has been updated is it still ye olde?

    ooh, i dunno?

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:52

    Of course it is

  • Nick in Dubai28/02/2010 at 13:52

    or "New fangled comments"! :P

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:52

Hmmm. Does it override browser shortcuts?

yep, if it kills a shortcut you normally use, please yell. it's a tricky balance.

Also, I'm guessing by the same logic that Ctrl+B makes text bold?

    try also:

    Ctrl+D and Ctrl+Q

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 13:54

yep, if it kills a shortcut you normally use, please yell. it's a tricky balance.

It's fine, but you can't use Ctrl+Q on highlighted comments to quote them, though?

Actually, quoting here is still a bit copy-paste? *May have mentioned this to Christine earlier.

    Testing keyboard shortcuts

Wow, this DOES work! And it does override browser shortcuts.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:54

Q is for quoting. It works for me.

safari 4 has a bug that means you need to hit the shortcut twice. annoying but true. am hoping they'll sort in v5.

  • Christine28/02/2010 at 13:56

    Gotcha

I'm gonna need some post-it notes today

Helped me remember where # was ;)

  • me28/02/2010 at 13:58

Actually, quoting here is still a bit copy-paste?

yup. the reason is that the comment box is often off screen and you can easily fill up by randomly clicking on text. it's a usability thing to figure out, rather than a technical issue, so click-to-quote has been disabled at the moment.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 13:59

i can't remember if i said last night, but the "P" key will load pending comments (when you're not in the middle of typing a comment)

I love the expansion as the new comments load :D

  • RubberGoat28/02/2010 at 14:00

Have you decided how you want to cover Fantasy Racers yet?

Ahhhh. I see. I did love that old functionality, though. Perhaps you can have a quote button/link near the comment? Once clicked, it jumps you to the commenting box with the quote in place?

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 14:01

am now going to blog it all. was just soliciting feedback to see if mostly the concept is okay.

2 hours to the end of winter testing... which we'll duly celebrate with Giggles Radio! :D

  • RubberGoat28/02/2010 at 14:02

Have you decided how you want to cover Fantasy Racers yet?

    Er, was I deciding something?

Are you still going to read out the top 5 Panda Racing teams on the debrief?

  • me28/02/2010 at 14:02

Perhaps you can have a quote button/link near the comment? Once clicked, it jumps you to the commenting box with the quote in place?

    ooh, i like that idea.

  • Christine28/02/2010 at 14:02

Are you still going to read out the top 5 Panda Racing teams on the debrief?

    Nope.

  • Amy28/02/2010 at 14:02

i would so be a joe intern. Should I introduce myself to him in melbourne as the one who types out everything he says?

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 14:02

Do you use Ye Olde often Journeyer?

Not often, but regularly. I usually use it for catching up. Even more so now with realtime loading, makes it a much more usable tool for reading overnight stuff.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 14:02

    Er, was I deciding something?

I thought there was the possibilty of a roll call but then nothing else [which I'm in favour of personally]

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 14:02

i would so be a joe intern. Should I introduce myself to him in melbourne as the one who types out everything he says?

    YES! :D

I didn't think they were gonna cover it on the podcast?

Anyways I still think christine should read the names out :D

  • RubberGoat28/02/2010 at 14:03

Are you still going to read out the top 5 Panda Racing teams on the debrief?

    Nope.

So you don't mind if I do it on my blog then?

    yay! :D

  • Christine28/02/2010 at 14:03

We are doing a roll call, yes.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 14:03

i would so be a joe intern. Should I introduce myself to him in melbourne as the one who types out everything he says?

    YES!

remind us and we'll let him know in advance that you'll be there.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 14:03

i would so be a joe intern. Should I introduce myself to him in melbourne as the one who types out everything he says?

    Definitely

We'll have to vouch for your [relative] sanity

  • Christine28/02/2010 at 14:04

So you don't mind if I do it on my blog then?

We're going to have a reminder post for each race which is basically where all Fantasy Racers discussions will go. If you're doing your stats like last year, we can probably get a banner in the sidebar for you like the rankings one.

  • RubberGoat28/02/2010 at 14:04

Are you still going to read out the top 5 Panda Racing teams on the debrief?

    Nope.

This was mentioned on a podcast recently, wasn't it?

    No harm in checking, right?

I ask because I am writing a post about Fantasy Racers and I want to include the top fives of different leagues (by request) this year...

  • Janna28/02/2010 at 14:04

Just checking, the updates on ye olde comments do not work on my mobile, am assuming this is correct and will still use doohickey

    [Or a relatively smart one]

  • me28/02/2010 at 14:11

ahh janna. i may know what the problem is. the pending alert gets stuck top-right of the page on the itouch, is it doing the same for you? i have to scroll back to the top of the page to load new comments.

    or post a comment.

  • Bassano28/02/2010 at 14:12

Goes to grab iPhone and test

OK, had I thought about it, I would have known the answer

But, I can verify that Ctrl Q or D definitely don't work on the iPhone

Probably as I have no physical keyboard - just a hunch

    Test

  • me28/02/2010 at 14:13

yeah, the "p" shortcut is a tricky problem on the phone. in an app you could bind it to a shake gesture or something, but there's no shortcut functionality so far as i can see.

    And multiple tabs

shall look into fixing that. it's too small on the phone too.

I have a question mr c... I don't know what the answer is though... I have been trying to say to people "come and watch my radio show on sidepodcast". Several of them have said they've arrived clicked on the article and then tried to comment and of course it's reloaded the video.

So I have been saying, ah what you want to do is go to the site click the comment in real time up in the top right, then on the left near the top of the page that loads there's a thing that says active thread and like a drop down thing, click on that change it giggles radio and it should work.

I can't think of a better way... but have I missed something?

  • Christine28/02/2010 at 15:29

More fun and games from Stefan, a press release at http://www.stefangp.com/news009.html says:

    28/02/2010

SGP would like to re-confirm its desire and, importantly, its ability to compete in the whole of the FIA 2010 Formula One World Championship.

It recognises that this can only happen with the consent of the FIA and the FOM, but has faith that the Formula One 'family' will make the correct decision in the end.

There will be no more press releases on this subject and we look forward to being allowed to show everyone our team in Bahrain.

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 15:32

    More on Stefan GP:

Stefan GP ’says sorry’ to FIA and FOM, promises to keep quiet for now

Adam C mentions that the grammar is worlds better than in previous statements, adding it:

...might lead cynics to suggest that the team had some help in drafting it…

The story goes on. And on. And on.

  • Pat W28/02/2010 at 15:32

They finally figured out the best way to work with the FIA is to not stir things up :)

I still think the best thing they could have done was to not enter the F1 season and function as an unofficial test team.

Here's a thought - how come Stefan couldn't get any tyres from Bridgestone, considering they bought all the Toyota F1 stuff? Surely they would have bought all of the service contracts like fuel, tyre and other supplier deals too?

In 1999 they had an entry for the 2000 season so they had tyres, but in any that was in the time of tyre competition, the contracts will almost certainly be different now.

Stefan bought Toyota's stuff but not their right to become an official team

Bridgestone are probablty obliged to only provide to the official entry list

    Yes :)

I can see the "X Pending" icon in the top-right hand corner of the screen, it updates correctly according to how many comments actually are pending, but it doesn't block anything.

It takes slightly longer to load the comments since they were nested into a separate page, but at the same time the occasional bug where threads with umpteen hundred comments wouldn't load first time has been fixed.

A pat on the back for Mr C (who I assume did the relevant coding) is in order.

still working on that, pls yell if it gets worse again. if it's easier you can add "/comments/" onto any post and get just the comments, so for today's daily:

    http://sidepodcast.com/2010/02/28/daily-28th-february-2010/comments/

    would be a good fallback.

Noted, and thank you for the tip.

However, I'm not worried with the current delay because it is, at most, a couple of extra seconds. If that makes sure that the heavily-commented entries (which are often the most interesting) load every time, that seems a good trade-off. I thought I ought to tell you the delay was there for the sake of keeping you informed - I didn't know whether it was an expected occurrence from your perspective or not.

Thank you again for the hard work you've put into the improvements.

NASA really love to waste money. There are only four more shuttle missions to go so why are they still spending money testing the solid rocket boosters when they have already had 130 flights. It's only two weeks since we had a shuttle launch so they could have taken data from that. They just seem to like spending money for no gain.

odd question... but i've no idea about this kinda thing.. what would a reasonable 'day rate' be for a photographer?

    1-0!!!

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 20:40

odd question... but i've no idea about this kinda thing.. what would a reasonable 'day rate' be for a photographer?

Depends on who the photographer is, what they are going to cover and where it is. If you are looking at something for yourself work out a salary you would reasonably like to earn then work on the basis that there are 250 working days per year and you are going to get jobs for 60?% of those. Don't forget that for every hour/day you spend photographing you have a time on top of that, that you will spend on other things from sales to all the post photographing stuff that results in you producing the finished article. You also have to asses the costs involved whether that is equipment, materials, travel etc

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 20:42

Based on all of that you should be able to calculate a reasonable day rate. You really need a proper spreadsheet for this so that you can work out quickly what effect getting 10% fewer sales would have or what effect having to travel further to get jobs would have.

  • Dan Brunell28/02/2010 at 20:44

odd question... but i've no idea about this kinda thing.. what would a reasonable 'day rate' be for a photographer?

Depends. I would charge $100-150 (USD) for a day shoot. For something like a wedding I would have a base rate $200-300 because of how much freaking work is involved with it.

What every you come up with make sure you add in expenses (i.e. travel, rentals, materials) and enter some cost for post production.

A good rule of thumb is for every hour you shoot, you will spend a half hour working the imagine in photoshop. That is a lot better than the old chemical lab days where it would be three hours of lab work for every hour shot.

I don't know how more guys get hurt because those skates are really really sharp.

    Christine,

Didn't one guy almost get decapitated once?

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 20:47

right... looks like it may be a bit of a long night then... lol never had to think about this kinda thing before.

If you need any help keep asking questions. There are enough people here who know how to make spreadsheets and what needs to go into this.

well.. i've been asked what my day rate is... and i was just a bit stumped by it cause.. well i've no idea about that kinda thing, not having much experience in it lol so thought i should ask you lot about your thoughts... seeing as your more experienced than i am in real life stuff lol

  • Dan Brunell28/02/2010 at 20:49

I am not saying that there is any national pressure on the Canadian hockey team, but even the England football team must be glad they don't play hockey for Canada.

Exactly. That means you don't need a forest of bamboo just some scrap from the butcher. Do you see how tame that wild panda is?

Emma, if she has any work for me in the future.

That's good. You really need to do a business plan. Don't be scared to say to her that you have never had to calculate a day rate before or to ask for her advice. Explain to her that right now getting experience is more important to you than making loads of money. Ask what she thinks is a reasonable rate for you to charge.

  • Jackie28/02/2010 at 20:53

Yes but neither of them have to deal with anything like a Rangers - Celtic game.

In terms of rivalry or mindless violence?

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 20:55

On the vdeo it is eating the bone. I know they are not known for being particularly bright but it took the meat off then ate the bone.

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 20:56

In terms of rivalry or mindless violence?

Both of those or in terms of pressure. Being a Celtic fan, player or manager today will not be a lot of fun and every place of work, every TV and radio station will be discussing this result for the rest of the week.

  • Andy Taylor28/02/2010 at 20:57

Because the All Blacks versus South Africa rivalry is pretty fierce, but only on the field. Certainly there is a lot of discussion and pressure on them both...

    underneath the suspension.

That's surprising. I wonder how Newey is going to sort the variable aero problem that has always caused. Wonder if he has something clever in his diffsuer

  • Jackie28/02/2010 at 21:26

So where do their exhausts come out

  • me28/02/2010 at 21:26

that's during a filming day before testing though? not sure i've seen them during testing?

so, they've developed secret rims that they want in PR material, but haven't tested yet?

or, they've spent time developing front rims for no purpose whatsoever, and decided they ought use them?

  • Pat W28/02/2010 at 21:26

    Where does it really exit?

Odd.. I thought it was preferable to have the exhaust gases flow over the rear wing to aid downforce

  • Pat W28/02/2010 at 21:32

    Montoya is out

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 21:33

Odd.. I thought it was preferable to have the exhaust gases flow over the rear wing to aid downforce

They used to feed the exhaust just under the rear wing to speed up the airflow there and increase downforce. The trouble with that was that mid corner the downforce varied with the throttle pressure. There is a centre of aerodynamic pressure just like there is a centre of gravity and the centre of pressure has to be slightly in front of the centre of gravity so varying the rear downforce by jumping on and off the throttle mid corner made the cars ever so slightly unstable as the centre of pressure was varying forward and back by several feet.

Feeding the exhaust flow into the diffuser area should have the same effect as feeding it on to the bottom of the wing so I look forward to someone explaing how Newey has solved this.

  • me28/02/2010 at 21:33

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 21:34

No but if they were doing a video they could use the fan like spinners with smoke or water to emphasise the effect the spinners had

I should of went with the six packs instead of the twelves.

My friends and I are looking for famous Olympic hockey fights and games. We all agree that nothing was better than when Canada would play the USSR in the late 70's and early 80's. Just physically destructive games where the two team HATED each other. Just watching some of the highlights, hits, and fights from those games make me cringe.

  • Jon Waldock01/03/2010 at 00:28

Never carry cash, no need to break into a tenner

im the opposite, if i just use cards i can spend way over what i budget for. if i get £30 out at the beginning of the week, im much more likely to stick to it

  • Bassano01/03/2010 at 00:29

Yeah I tried that already. I'm currently trying always use cash. Never use the ATM.....

Swipe what you need to purchase and monitor your usage

If you're ona limited budget then make you cash last, no matter what

  • Bassano01/03/2010 at 00:30

im the opposite, if i just use cards i can spend way over what i budget for. if i get £30 out at the beginning of the week, im much more likely to stick to it

I never carry cash unless on a night out [let's not go there]

During the day, I can exist without spending cash by justifying every purchase

  • Alison01/03/2010 at 00:30

Swipe what you need to purchase and monitor your usage

Yeah my problem is that I have basically no essential purchases. Petrol I guess.... I'm stocked up for food.

  • Jon Waldock01/03/2010 at 00:31

Productive morning at Confex. Interesting seminars and a bag full of contacts and potential sponsors for my race team

Yeah my problem is that I have basically no essential purchases. Petrol I guess.... I'm stocked up for food.

Then you don't need to spend

    Pass

    Ask her

  • Alison01/03/2010 at 00:33

Yes that's very easy to say.

  • Bassano01/03/2010 at 00:33

Yes that's very easy to say.

"my problem is that I have basically no essential purchases"

    ?

  • Steven Roy01/03/2010 at 00:33

    her race team?

Presumably she is representing a team and is helping them raise sponsorship

  • Alison01/03/2010 at 00:33

"my problem is that I have basically no essential purchases"

Nooooo I can't explain. Never mind.

  • Jon Waldock01/03/2010 at 00:33

During the day, I can exist without spending cash by justifying every purchase

I'm totally the opposite, if i see theres only £20 left in my wallet and ive still got 5 days left in the week then i cant justify to myself that i want to buy it (unless its necessary like food)

if its something i want rather than need then im more likely to justify it by saying "theres still x00 left in my account, i'll be fine etc"

  • Jon Waldock01/03/2010 at 00:34

"my problem is that I have basically no essential purchases"

dosen't mean she dosent want to spend it on things she'd like

  • Bassano01/03/2010 at 00:35

dosen't mean she dosent want to spend it on things she'd like

This is turning into an immense plan.... Is upstaging the bride the aim of the game?

    Who was it?

James Chance and the Contortions - he comes from New York to play one UK gig for the first time in years before going away again in a venue 200 yards from my flat and I've missed it!!

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/03/2010 at 01:12

    Was his grammar acceptable?

Oddly enough, I am quite anal when it comes to grammar. Bad grammar drives me mad.....

I'll do you a deal. If I'm invited to a Williams wedding, I'll send Mr C the invite.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/03/2010 at 01:54

    Ahhhh...

The shops, post-midnight snacks galore amidst the drunken ramblings of the locals. I now get to hear the glory of them screaming at eachother for the next couple of hours as they revel in nonsensical, intoxicated verbal bouts outside my window - oh, the joy of living on a main street.

Just had a quick scan through the comments and this is definitely my favourite. I even understood it when I saw it. I would suggest it for comment of the year bu the explanation would take way too long.
