I am writing this from a table at the side of the Evening with Joe event, and have been covering it all evening. It's been a fabulous evening and you can catch up with all the comments and photos over on the dedicated thread. We'll be working on some highlights over the weekend, as well, hopefully. Meanwhile, here are some of the other things we're talking about:

  • The first part of my F1 Digest Season Preview went up yesterday, too late to meet the daily. It features a run through the entire grid - 24 drivers that we know of - with some stats and a paragraph or two for each. There will be three more preview podcasts over the next few days, so you can now start saying the season really is here.
  • Hulkenberg was fastest in testing yesterday, which is very interesting if you consider their Cosworth engine. It appeared as though the engine was going to be behind everyone else over the winter, but perhaps that isn't the case. Naturally, testing isn't reliable evidence, but it's certainly better than I was expecting. Now, Virgin on the other hand... still struggling.
  • I didn't get to say Happy Birthday to Janna yesterday because I was saving it for the guest post she wrote for us. Now that is published, belated birthday wishes for Janna, and thank you very much for the push for donations. We appreciate it.

That should do it for now. I can't speak for Mr C but I am going to be completely shattered today, so I will see you in the comments... but not until later.

Hi, this is Stuart it is just gone 12:45 and I am now on the train home surrounded by people much younger and much more drunk than I am. Had a fantastic evening which at least in part I must thank Alex for as he welcomed me into your community. I will now try to take a more active part in your website rather than being a 'lurker'. Looking forward to see you again for St Patricks day.

Morning all. You weren't able to go to London, Steven?

No. It's way too far away. If I had gone I would not have got home until about 6am at least

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 01:07

    Hey Bassano. Good evening?

    Ahh, Journeyer!

Your ears must be burning :D

    Very good actually

  • Steven Roy27/02/2010 at 01:08

Definitely. So far we have three drummers, two of whom want to play on a gym ball, one of them will occasionally play the guitar and Alison is singing. Oh and Nick is the manager

  • Journeyer27/02/2010 at 01:09

    Ahh, Journeyer!

Indeed. My mom was telling me it would've been better if we went to Melbourne this year instead of choosing it for next year (because of the holiday setup this year). With Joe only having his event in Melbourne (this year, anyway), it looks like she's right. :(

    The more drummers the better.

There must be a double bass teacher lurking out there. We could have two double bass player then.

Mr C also suggested the electric triangle but that was ruled out on the ground of the triangle and the thing that hits it being slightly conductive

Given the reaction he received on his website I can see him doing a lot. There is a market there for lots of F1 insiders and insiders in other areas making a nice earner from this kind of event.

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 01:13

    But who will be Bez?

    Why, Alex, of course :D

I had a discussion tonight about this about whether it was very finacially viable

No the money spinner it may appear to be

  • Steven Roy27/02/2010 at 01:17

No the money spinner it may appear to be

If you have 100 people paying £30? each that is £3000. Travel, hotel, hire of the hall and a drink for everyone must still leave a nice few quid. At a race weekend the travel and hotel costs have to be paid anyway.

only 1 stop to go now, then a 15 minute quick cycle ride. By the way there were only about 50 people present tonight so unfortunately I don't think it was a real money maker. However it was an excellant night and as Joe commented with our help we can make the next event bigger and better by heavily promoting it. So lets hear from everyone about how good tonight was.

  • lou27/02/2010 at 01:31

she asked me to send her links to my flickr etc, as she's really into trying to get girls into the sport and said she'd love to try and help. Apparently i looked really enthusiastic and things :)

  • startledbunny27/02/2010 at 01:31

  • lou27/02/2010 at 01:36

Oooooh Lou, Steven said you're the person to ask about ducks. I want ducks. Where can you get them? :D

omg! ducks are awesome pets!!! :) I loved my ducks, but we got them from a friend this time :) (she brought them into school which was interesting!). However i would suggest having a look in the local paper etc It's worth finding a local place that breeds them. We got our geese, chickens and ducks from a local farm that sells all sorts of birds.

Oooooh Lou, Steven said you're the person to ask about ducks. I want ducks. Where can you get them? :D

    Hungover Bassanos, not ducks. Obviously

i intend to, tomorrow morning, when i'm more alert. I was so confused at first when she pulled me aside and asked for my name and gave me her card. Awesome awesome day. (hearts) sidepodcast!

All you need is a line of Bread, a Cat Basket, and a nice place to keep them in.

  • Journeyer27/02/2010 at 01:38

i intend to, tomorrow morning, when i'm more alert. I was so confused at first when she pulled me aside and asked for my name and gave me her card. Awesome awesome day. (hearts) sidepodcast!

So SHE pulled you aside? So awesome! :D

Where did Alison warning me away from the ducks enter the conversation?

  • Alison27/02/2010 at 01:39

omg! ducks are awesome pets!!! :) I loved my ducks, but we got them from a friend this time :) (she brought them into school which was interesting!). However i would suggest having a look in the local paper etc It's worth finding a local place that breeds them. We got our geese, chickens and ducks from a local farm that sells all sorts of birds.

Awwww so cute! I guess I want them smaller though so they let you pet them properly. Also Nick would have to look after them because I don't do animals. So erm yeah. He told me I wasn't allowed to keep them in his bath. Maybe I should get less excited about them now.....

  • Journeyer27/02/2010 at 01:40

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 01:40

I have no interst in harming any ducks

    Link fail

Can i look at them from afar, ducks are quite funny when hungover

I suggested drunken ducks could be funny last night. It wasn't well received

Wasn't supposed to be a link [italics fail]

    Drunken ducks = comedy gold

  • Journeyer27/02/2010 at 01:41

    My thoughts exactly.

Where did Alison warning me away from the ducks enter the conversation?

She was talking about Nick having to get a bigger house with a duckpond and I said something about making sure he had room when you visited because he didn't have it now and Alison said you better stay away from her ducks. At least that is how I remember it. The comments are still in yesterday's daily at stupid o'clock in the morning. Never had such a long discussion on ducks in my life

You'd trust Nick with live ducklings?

  • Journeyer27/02/2010 at 01:43

You want ducks but you don't do animals?

    Exactly, right?!

  • lou27/02/2010 at 01:43

Those are some pretty cool ducks

they were awesome. Such funny creatures, they loved the sound of a camera shutter and would even let you pick them up and stroke them. All they really need is regular feeding, a secure enclosure or a huge secure garden if you're going to be around (foxes are crafty things), a place to sleep at night, straw (although shredded newspaper works well too) and a pond. :) they're generally very social birds too.

ducks are awesome Alison. We used to have two small mallard ducks, and they used to put the geese away for us, (seriously they were like sheep dogs... only ducks.. herding geese).

  • Steven Roy27/02/2010 at 01:43

hehehehe i think after such a stressful week, and having a few panic attacks today in school cause of unis i needed to just pick up a camera and remember why i'm doing this, Joe and you guys helped me realise that. It just seemed very natural, no idea if i got any good shots though.

Was nice to see [not the only person who noticed this]

:D i'm starting to find my feet in social situations where i don't get so self concious about what people think (yay!) aw and yay for other people not minding :)

erm... yes. :) two very small, very cheeky ducks :D sooo funny!

  • Alison27/02/2010 at 01:48

You'd trust Nick with live ducklings?

Erm there was a brief mention of cooking them but in all honesty, there's no way he'd know how.... The oven hasn't been on since he moved there, I think he'd be too lazy to actually do it.

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 01:48

Is it weird that air fresheners try to emulate natural scents but end up smelling like artificial air fresheners?

  • startledbunny27/02/2010 at 02:23

    night Lou

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 02:23

I'm getting a headache just thinking about all that. Bassano, I'd say if you have a sensitive nose, staying away from artificial smells as far as possible seems wise....

Lush gives me a headache walking past

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 02:24

She's okay with it, as long as the baby was ok.

    indeed

Will be a funny story when her children want to listen

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 02:25

    Gotta say it

One of those rare days where I'm still a little hungover

  • Alison27/02/2010 at 02:26

She's okay with it, as long as the baby was ok.

Yeah I bet she was freaking out when she was on the ground though. Did she call an ambulance? I'm really glad everything's okay. Babies are pretty robust all round really.

We have a guitar player for the band although he is 15 years out of practise.

    Did I miss anything?

Apparently I missed everyone going to see Joe. Sound like a lovely time. I hope he does one in Montreal. (Even though I won't be there because I will be coming back from visiting my sister in Peru that weekend. Grrr)

    Question for people attending SidepodSpa.

I am doing a cost estimate for if I can do SidepodSpa and wondering how much train tickets cost from London to Spa?

Also, when is everyone going down and back? I assume everyone would leave on the 26th of August and return the 30th.

Just trying to figure out if I can possibly do this.

  • Amy27/02/2010 at 07:42

I am doing a cost estimate for if I can do SidepodSpa and wondering how much train tickets cost from London to Spa?

This I cannot help with as I'm not taking the train

Also, when is everyone going down and back? I assume everyone would leave on the 26th of August and return the 30th.

As far as I know I'm going on Thursday 26th and afterwards I'm flying Brussels - Berlin on Monday night.

I am doing a cost estimate for if I can do SidepodSpa and wondering how much train tickets cost from London to Spa?

Alex knows about these things better, but check out the eurostar website. I think the closest train station to Spa is Verviers Central (45Min away by bus)

  • Aaron James27/02/2010 at 08:37

Just a quick recap from me, for those asking 'did I miss anything', well, yeah funny, you did actually.

I found it a very enjoyable evening, obviously as the first event of its kind there are some things that can be done better next time, but in the main the format, venue, and entertainment provided good value for money.

And at the end of the day it was Joe performing before an audience, to earn a living. And I quite enjoyed the performance :-)

Highlight of the evening for me was talking briefly to Paul (I didn't catch his last name). A long retired F1 Journalist from Sydney (but also worked for The Advertiser in my home town of Adelaide). Mr C captured it on tape I think, as he spoke about Chris Amon 'hitting one kerb too many' and getting a puncture at Clermont-Ferrand (home of Michelin, not Renault as I mistook!) to hand the win to Stewart.

It was only a little anecdote but a wonderfully retold one and that's the magic of events like these. You never know who you could meet, or what stories you could hear.

Only thing that made me scratch my head was the dude in the middle row falling asleep and then leaving basically 2/3s of the way through!

  • Aaron James27/02/2010 at 08:53

Oh I did forget to mention one more thing, the beer was cheap!

  • Lady Snowcat27/02/2010 at 09:18

I travelled to Spa last year by plane and then caught a train to Verviers...

Pretty little ride on the last section after Liege...

Luckily I had some friends to pick me up but I expect you could sort a taxi out... it's still a little way from Spa...

  • Kathi27/02/2010 at 09:48

  • Janna27/02/2010 at 11:15

Hello all, have caught up with all of the comments from last night, sounds like you had a great time. Looking froward to hearing the edited audio. I hope Joe does another evening so that I can go along.

I had a lovely birthday party, my friends each provided a different course for the meal and I came home with a party bag so am eating chocolate eggs, strawberry laces and flumps for breakfast ;)

  • Janna27/02/2010 at 11:16

I have reached the conclusion that Singapore tickets this year must be giant novelty sized because last year the courier cost was $10 and this year its $57 so by my logic the tickets are 5.7 times the size.

    Hello folks.

Will B says Stefan GP won't race in Bahrain.

But TBH, their only realistic way in was to buy USF1's entry, and that is still possible right now. Question is, will Ken Anderson swallow his pride and sell it? Or will he take down Stefan with him?

    Definitely. So far we have three drummers, two of whom want to play on a gym ball, one of them will occasionally play the guitar and Alison is singing. Oh and Nick is the manager {Comment #29}

It's often on my bed or in my bag and it doesn't appear to be in either of those places at the moment. To be honest though the opposite half my room is a tip so if it's in there it'll never be found. Until I clean up. Which will be tomorrow.

I cba dealing with it now. I've drafted a letter, I'll print it out at work and send it. I've been paying small direct debits for a mobile account that should be closed for the last 8 months, I'm sure it'll wait another couple of weeks....

No Tyres to roll it out on? ;)

Did I read somewhere earlier that they plan to launch next week?

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 16:29

The MotoGP at Qatar last year was torrential

  • Alison27/02/2010 at 16:31

He didn't mention anything. Maybe he thinks it doesn't rain because he doesn't notice...

  • Pat W27/02/2010 at 16:32

Neither does a test or sending crates of stuff to a Grand Prix though?

A test does. Their plan B was to test all year. They don't need an entry for that (apart from the lack of tyres!).

At the time they sent things, Campos and USF1 were about to collapse and they (perhaps a little arrogantly) assumed they'd be brought in to replace them.

Now Campos is back together and pushing to make Bahrain.

Things have also moved on with Stefan/USF1 merger rumours.

Breaking news: Force India's Companies House paperwork is in! I can tell because the status changed from yesterday's "Last Accounts Made Up To: xx/xx/2007 OVERDUE" to today's "Last Accounts Made Up To: 31/12/2008" all highlighted in red (to indicate that you can't look at the document yet because Companies House must upload, and possibly verify it first).

So this means all the worries about Force India possibly facing strike-off are over for another year - or should be. I'm really happy about this :)

  • Nick in Dubai27/02/2010 at 17:45

its raining in Dubai. I THOUGHT IT NEVER RAINED.

Nick has lied to me! LIED!

    Tell me about it!

We had a years worth of rain in 10 mins! And i was driving in it!

The car nearly stopped because the water levels were so high!

    Terrifying!

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2010 at 17:53

    Terrifying!

you seem to be having a number of water related calamities of late

  • lou27/02/2010 at 17:54

    Amy!! Emma likes Heikki too!

Lotus four seconds off the pace according to Trulli-yikes! Hope they pick some pace up-Heikki's a top bloke and deserves a good car

one of the roadworks divider bollards had floated into the middle of the road too, not great with 2 metre visability :(

Then i get home to find a waterfall at the lift shaft...

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 18:10

Possible lunch tomorrow as well, when do I get to chill?

No, but it doesn't sound like he has the time to be honest

Guys I expect I'm the only one who is really into rallying this year but having gone onto the Mexican Rally website there a fantastic download...

It's a Google Earth map of all the stages...

Now I'm not going but looking at what the map shows by way of info I'll be following Kimi every step (if that's the right word) of the way on every stage...

    Hurrah...

But it does make me want to go!!....

This is the site if you are interested...

hehe yes, it was funny cause i'd just sat down, and was still a little flustered from being a little late etc and he came over to mr c and i and looked at me saying 'you must be the photographer?...' and then started talking about photography with us. I nearly died! :D

Thanks for that, it looks an interesting site. I'm not a huge rally fan but it will be interesting to see how Kimi copes in a different environment, couldn't get much more of a contrast from Sweden

    nice one. have you been checking every day? {Comment #453}

Yes! Twice yesterday, just in case there was an update after business hours on deadline day. If the screen had still read "OVERDUE" on Monday I'd probably have panicked...

(...well, it is my favourite team and the paperwork issue was not exactly of minor importance...)

  • Lady Snowcat27/02/2010 at 20:03

    Bless...

    He really loves his job...

And sorry guys I am getting a little boring with these tweets courtesy of JA....

ClaireVWilliams Rubens is brilliant. After a full day of track running, he still did an hour & a half of media work for me (and let his supper go cold)!

Actually of all the teams I think Claire does it best by far...

    They're so beautiful!

The Safety Car one seems a bit out of place to me. Kinda like it's not AS good as the others. But that's only because the rest are ridiculously good.

the photos are perfect, i just wonder if a gallery might have been a better choice. at the moment, your gallery page says:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/galleries/

on the other hand you could question the difference between a gallery, a set and a group. either way, very good stuff.

I think the second one is better because it's a more interesting car, but the safety car is just a car. I don't know if that makes sense, and don't listen to me anyway, because your worst picture will still be better than any of mine :)

  • Bassano27/02/2010 at 20:25

i'm very confused about Galleries though.. they seem to be something you can put anyone's photos that you like in? compared to a set which is your own?.. i can set up a gallery too, my thinking was if anyone randomly finds my page they can immediately seen a sample of my work?

  • me27/02/2010 at 20:27

Don#t know if you can compare this but I have a von/van in my name. In Germany I'm listed under G for my last name and in Finland under v. I prefer G but I'm not sure if that's correct :)

  • Maverick27/02/2010 at 22:03

would you ever put MacDonald under D?

Don#t know if you can compare this but I have a von/van in my name. In Germany I'm listed under G for my last name and in Finland under v. I prefer G but I'm not sure if that's correct :)

Scottish Mc names are always listed as M and Irish O' names are always listed as O but I guess so long as you have one system and stick to it, it shouldn't matter.

  • rethymnoracer27/02/2010 at 22:04

In alphabetical order, would di Grassi come under D or G?

FIA has him as Lucas di Grassi.

So his last name starts with a G.

  • me27/02/2010 at 22:06

FIA has him as Lucas di Grassi.

So his last name starts with a G.

    so the second one?

    Di Grassi, Lucas

    Grassi, Lucas di

  • Maverick27/02/2010 at 22:06

FIA has him as Lucas di Grassi.

So his last name starts with a G.

There... we have a definitive answer: The FIA say G so it must be D!

  • rethymnoracer27/02/2010 at 22:08

    Di Grassi, Lucas

    Grassi, Lucas di

    di Grassi, Lucas

  • Maverick27/02/2010 at 22:08

On timing screens he was DIG, not GRA

  • lou27/02/2010 at 22:09

Anything exciting happen during testing today?

Jenson was in the car... he did some laps.. there were a few red flags.. it rained a bit. just normal pre season testing.

  • me27/02/2010 at 22:09

On timing screens he was DIG, not GRA

    ooh, interesting.

The di in his name is not a separate word though. It is not a name on its own but then the same applies to Mc or von and there are clearly different systems for them. I think Christine should pick a system and stick to it and from then on it becomes sidepodlaw

  • me27/02/2010 at 22:09

    di Grassi, Lucas

    with a lowercase 'd'?

  • Steven Roy27/02/2010 at 22:09

Jenson was in the car... he did some laps.. there were a few red flags.. it rained a bit. just normal pre season testing.

Sounds like a good day then

  • Kathi27/02/2010 at 22:09

Google says it should be G http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/GRAMMAR/numbers.htm (last paragraph)

    Grassi, Lucas di

  • Maverick27/02/2010 at 22:09

    yes

    de la Rosa, Pedro too

Villeneuve to have a seat fitting for Stefan GP? Why didn't Toaster F1 snap him up if he wanted to come back? He is well known in the USA and would get them loads of coverage so they could offer better value to sponsors than J Lo.

    Night Jackie, Evening Gavin.

    Anyone seen this yet?

    Aus GP moving to Avalon

A PLAN to move the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix to a purpose-built, $200 million race circuit at Avalon is being considered in an attempt to keep the event in Victoria.

  • RG28/02/2010 at 00:02

    Aus GP moving to Avalon

Not moving, y'kna, considering moving. Bad choice of words.

  • Maverick28/02/2010 at 00:05

    Aus GP moving to Avalon

"CAMS chief executive Graham Fountain said his organisation was given about $130,000 last year by the FIA to complete a facility masterplan."

Very generous of them - is this how Tilke ends up with all the contracts?

"CAMS chief executive Graham Fountain said his organisation was given about $130,000 last year by the FIA to complete a facility masterplan."

But why? There's hasn't been any complaints with Albert Park, has there?

And planning for 2015 is WAY too far away at this point. I don't see this being news in 2012 or 2013, because it'll stay put in Albert Park.

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 00:07

    Anyone seen this yet?

That is not the first time a new circuit has been suggested to keep the race in Victoria or by another state to nick it like Melbourne did from Adelaide

Because the greenies and hand-wringers are starting to convince the city council that a race that brings in hundreds of millions is a nuisance and bad for the city...

  • Maverick28/02/2010 at 00:08

bernie - wants it under lights

can't imagine that ever happening at albert park

"CAMS chief executive Graham Fountain said his organisation was given about $130,000 last year by the FIA to complete a facility masterplan."

Seems an unusual thing for an international governing body to be giving money to a circuit that doesn't exist. Tilke gets the work because there are only two FIA approved circuit designers. Him and the British guy - Brown? - who has modified a few circuits but as far as I know has never done a complete new track. Given how badly Tilke does them he has to be worth a go.

It may be a lot better than Melbourne but I guess Amy is not going to be happy since she moved to be next to the race

Could be, but even then this is too early to be thinking of 2015. I don't think this will come through.

And I don't think this will stop the greenies from complaining. For them, it'll be just moving the problem, not eliminating it.

  • Steven Roy28/02/2010 at 00:11

To build a circuit from scratch takes a long time. Five years is not a lot.

"The study will be carried out by industry experts from the UK and could begin within months."

could be him? are you thinking of apex circuit design?

  • RG28/02/2010 at 00:11

    But Melbourne is awesome! :(

Maybe if Mark Webber wins 4 world titles in the next 5 years, we could have both.

  • Journeyer28/02/2010 at 00:12

To build a circuit from scratch takes a long time. Five years is not a lot.

IIRC, Sepang, Shanghai, Sakhir, Abu Dhabi all did it in 3, from planning to completion.

Hmm. Maybe if they had 2 extra years they wouldn't suck?

    FTA:

"Whether or not Avalon will or will not be an international grade circuit remains to be seen. But certainly it is one of many considerations as part of the masterplan process."

I think the article is being liberal with the truth here. They're not even sure yet if it'll be an F1 circuit.

I didn't think they could move it from Adelaide. It was incredibly popular especially when they made it the last race of the season. I was shocked when it was announced that it was going to Melbourne
