Webber was fastest in testing yesterday, and if that is the first meaninful testing time we've seen so far, then it's looking like a good start for Red Bull. There will be another dedicated testing thread along for day two in Barcelona, and I'm intrigued to see who will be fast on the second outing. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:

  • Talking of Webber, it appears the Australian has gone and got himself a presence on Twitter. The name @aussiegrit is already causing some confusion. I've seen people think it says 'girl' or mistake it for not having an 'r'. Perhaps MarkWebber was already taken? Still, good to see him on their, and as one of the more outspoken members of the paddock, there may some real gems to come.
  • Meanwhile, di Grassi was being pretty useless out on track in Barcelona, although the team were quick to say they had been trying an experimental setup so it wasn't his fault. He crashed into the wall and wrecked the car, meaning the team had to sit out the rest of the day, and are hoping to be ready to go again tomorrow. What else can go wrong for Virgin?
  • Mr Stefanovic still thinks he's in with a shot of getting a grid slot, but he says time really is tight now. Apparently to be ready for Bahrain they need to be packed by next Wednesday, and he's sure they'll have something sorted by then. Really? I suppose this can only coincide with the fact that the employees at US F1 have so little to do without a car that they really are going to make a toaster. I don't know about you but I would buy that toaster.

That should do it for now. We're out in London today, but will be keeping an eye on the site and hopefully feeding back as much as we can. I'll see you in the comments.

I've been furiously reading through Google Reader while listening to a couple of podcasts. I'm still miles behind on all fronts. I can't say no to anything.

I wonder if we’ll look back a year from now and miss them? There isn’t a guarantee that the BBC will be better.

having heard the new pitlane reporter, i'm inclined to agree.

Stick to that story. Much safer

He did. I really hate dogs though. Cats scratch me. My housemate last year had a hamster and I refused to touch it. I would lure it into a ball so I could put food into its cage. That's my limit.

Hamsters are evil. We had one as a class pet in primary school and the little sod sank its teeth into my finger tip. I bled all over the place.

That didn't take long. You just need to get used to those sort of things. Most people realise that you are just doing your job but some will take it personally. Nothing you can do about it.

Seems impressive. They talk the correct talk as well, "next Will Buxton" etc on the about page. You'd have to know a bit about F1 to know to say that.

I've been contacted as well, just don't know if I have the time to dedicate to it.

Have you only just been contacted, out of interest? Or is it something you've been sitting on?

  • Maverick26/02/2010 at 08:39

Didn't someone try something like this a couple of years ago? I forget the site name, looked green, that's all I remember?

    it wasn't called uberf1 was it? :-)

I ask because if they're still looking for people this late in the day it suggests they might be about as ready as USF1

I know the guy who comes up with these for monopoly funnily enough

circular or square? guess it doesn't matter but the counters are nothing the get excited about - they're replacing my gorgeous 1930's racing car with THAT?

I agree, but at the same time I still want these posts to end up on my blog. I might send some summary posts out with graphs in for starters to some places at first and see what people think...

  • RubberGoat26/02/2010 at 09:48

but at the end of the day, there should be something in it for you too, in terms of attracting new readers to your own blog, even if it's just in terms of reading more of your work

Incidentally thanks for linking to my post again - I've have quite a few clicks come in from it ;)

Fact. This is the number one reason I suggest taking the train in for most people... While the first part of the journey might take slightly longer the second part of the journey takes significantly less time.

A couple of years ago my mother set off from her house about an hour south of London and I set off from my house in South london and we both headed to the same place in Birmingham. Here's the google maps estimation on time:

Her journey (no London): 153 mi 2 hours 46 mins

My journey: 125 mi 2 hours 33 mins

  • Janna26/02/2010 at 10:44

    Are we talking trams here?

No, in my part of the UK we get our power from third rail, not from overhead lines. The train has a part which runs along this rail and makes the circuit so that the train has power

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 10:52

Okay I have a techy question... I have set up domain forwarding for gamboling to use the hosted wordpress... But it seems to have totally broken my gamboling.co.uk e-mail address which used to forward to me.

My question is if I am using wordpresses name servers then how can I split out the MX record?

  • paul26/02/2010 at 10:53

My question is if I am using wordpresses name servers then how can I split out the MX record?

You can't split a DNS. Your MX record has to be on that one DNS server.

  • me26/02/2010 at 10:53

My question is if I am using wordpresses name servers then how can I split out the MX record?

do you have to use wordpress' nameservers? could you not use 123reg ones instead?

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 10:54

do you have to use wordpress' nameservers? could you not use 123reg ones instead?

    umm... probably :)

  • Pat W26/02/2010 at 10:56

That's what Google is predicting. In actual fact she beat me there by half an hour. And on the motorway section I'm guessing I was driving faster than her.

When my sister lived in London I visited a few times. It took roughly the same time to get to the edge of London but the car took over an hour and the train less than half that because it didn't stop after Woking (albeit it put me at Waterloo and had to spend time on the tube).

  • me26/02/2010 at 10:56

    umm... probably :)

as paul says, you can't split dns, so use 123 as dns provider and cname/a record to wordpress from there. then mx to whoever you're using for email.

  • paul26/02/2010 at 10:57

as paul says, you can't split dns, so use 123 as dns provider and cname/a record to wordpress from there. then mx to whoever you're using for email.

  • paul26/02/2010 at 11:00

What time is your Joe thing on?

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 11:00

as paul says, you can't split dns, so use 123 as dns provider and cname/a record to wordpress from there. then mx to whoever you're using for email.

Basically the problem is that it would appear that

    a) wordpress does not allow you to do CNAME records for www or *.gamboling.co.uk to do that I would have to us the ns

    and

    b) wordpress does not allow you to change the MX records except to establish a google e-mail account

  • Christine26/02/2010 at 11:01

What time is your Joe thing on?

    It starts at 7pm.

  • paul26/02/2010 at 11:01

    It starts at 7pm.

    Boo. I will be asleep.

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 11:01

I guess so... I don't know how much I will be doing... Like I don't imagine I would be ustreaming the whole event. But I might do little ustream interviews with people or something.

  • me26/02/2010 at 11:01

    b) wordpress does not allow you to change the MX records except to establish a google e-mail account

    oh balls.

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 11:01

    oh balls.

    that's what I thought

  • paul26/02/2010 at 11:02

    that's what I thought

so you can't just use 123's DNS server?

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 11:03

so you can't just use 123's DNS server?

no because I would then have to have my blog on blog.gamboling.co.uk

  • paul26/02/2010 at 11:05

no because I would then have to have my blog on blog.gamboling.co.uk

Can gmail auto-forward mail? I do hate that suggetsion though,...

Yeah I might have to do that... of course this and all of these solutions means that I can't use my site for anything else now... I can't have a somethingelse.gamboling.co.uk if I'd like to which is quite annoying. If it were self hosted both of these problems would go away... hmmm

If you have fancy reasons to want to be self-hosted, then you should go for it. I like to encourage wordpress.com if you just want to blog and be done with it, because that's what it's good at.

  • Alex Andronov26/02/2010 at 11:16

By the way I don't know if you guys remember me mentioning my mate Beardyman he's the world human beatbox champion. And now he's done something really really bizarre but rather cool. He recorded lots of versions of himself doing his beatbox and then had some people "play" him in holographic form. There is some bad language right at the end so please don't listen if you are sensitive to that kind of thing...

but this is rather amazing: http://vimeo.com/9543537

Yeah... I mean I have no particularly fancy reasons except the e-mail. I'd rather not have the hosting headache to be honest. So yeah... I'll have to think... But on a day when I am about to disappear up into London it's probably not a good idea to make a fundamental change just before I go :)

Yeah, we had someone set off fireworks inside on bonfire night. That was super smart. They did it right by the main door as well so we all had to get out these awful fire escape stairways that hadn't been used in years. Purely disgusting!

I was in that project too - but that time it was my fault rather than the magazine's, because I didn't have enough time to properly commit to it then (back then I was new to being unemployed and hadn't learned efficient ways of applying for stuff).

At least F1-Pitlane knew what it wanted me to do and communicated clearly with me. Sometimes I wonder if I could do a better job - but I think the market is seriously overheated at the moment.

I think in the end people lost interest. It's difficult to mentally switch from writing for your own blog to writing for a magazine, especially if you're still maintaining the blog, and not everyone functions well on a lack of obvious feedback.

As an advertising-driven method, I'd completely agree. Given that conventional advertising is, to all intents and purposes, ineffective on me, I wouldn't feel good about trying to sell a magazine on that basis anyway.

I'm not 100% convinced that a sale-per-issue or subscription method is a non-starter because GP+ is already managing it.

he didn't set that time during his simulation though - his fastest lap during that was a 1:23.9

A couple of interesting items from this week's AUTOSPORT.

Alan Permane aka Witness X #confidential while discussing Kubica and the loss of Alonso.

Fernando knew exactly what he wanted so I am not going to run him down and say Robert is doing a better job than him. I don't want to make comparisons with Fernando because he has done a great job for us over the years. But Robert seems very dedicated.

So Mr ultimate racing driver is not dedicated? I am not sure what I find harder to believe. The idea that he is not dedicated or someone in that team would say it.

Another person bursting bubbles was Edwin Irvine Esq on his third favourite subject Michael Schumacher.

Anyway he wasn't very good at testing the car. He was very good at engine development - he was very sensitive to the engine - but at set up I don't think he was particularly good at all. It's hilarious the way people describe him as being good at set up. He missed a front wing that was worth nearly half a second . He tried it and didn't like it, and I tested it and it was worth half a second.

    should the fia have done more for new teams to make the grid? {Comment #336}

It should have been sensible from the start and not promised a budget cap it couldn't deliver, but apart from that... ...no. USF1 and Campos overestimated their respective capabilities and are paying the price.

  • Turkey Machine26/02/2010 at 20:17

Are you listening AND commenting at the same time?!

  • Jeremy26/02/2010 at 20:27

What does Joe think of 'AussieGrit' as a Twitter handle for Mark Webber?

Incidentally, please can I point out to Steven that the point of Witness X being called that was to avoid being publicly connected with a specific individual? Since Witness X has not formally identified himself or herself, we cannot even be sure he/she is who you say it is...

He has not identified himself but he has been identified. I don't believe there is a shred of doubt about his identity

  • paul26/02/2010 at 23:32

Is everybody going to finish this bobsled thing upside down?

Perhaps they should have an upside down medal?

  • RG26/02/2010 at 23:32

Is everybody going to finish this bobsled thing upside down?

Maybe there is a new sport for 2014 in Sochi, upside down bobsleigh, where you use bob's helmet instead of a sleigh...

  • RG26/02/2010 at 23:32

Perhaps they should have an upside down medal?

I suspect they don't want to give gold to Britain that easily.
