We have reached Thursday, and for once, I am determined that it won't be a bad day. For a start I'm not at work today, so that helps. Also, testing in Barcelona gets underway today, so that is also going to make it awesome. Watch out for a dedicated thread appearing later on this morning. Elsewhere:

  • The second part in Jackie's Safety First blog series appeared yesterday, this time taking a closer look at Driver Aids, and more particularly accelerometers. It's a great read, as is the first in the series about safety at circuits, so make sure you check them both out if you haven't already.
  • Not really F1 related at all but I wrote a quick piece on I Heart Franck yesterday regarding Peugeot and their plans for the year. It looks like we'll be live commenting at least one Franck race in 2010, and the real challenge will be to see how much of the 24 hours I can stay awake for this time round.
  • It's that time again, time to promote the latest part of Life in the Fast Lane. We're drawing the story to a close now, just two more sections to come and one more vote after this one. Things are getting serious and the decisions are getting more important! If you haven't already, head on over and get your vote in to direct the path of Part 9. (Which, by the way, will be late as it is due on Friday, and we'll be concentrating on Joe that day.) Also a quick shout out to Lindsay Rumbold who in turn gave my story a quick shout out as well. She has a motorsport book due for release soon-ish, so keep an eye out for it.

That should do it for now. Hopefully I won't forget Baby Panda Thursday this week, so it might be a better day for everyone. See you in the comments!

Thursday already? Mine shouldn't be too bad actually, hopefully if the manager in the room next door isn't about I can use the time to catch up with Google Reader, seeing as I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the month end to happen. :)

Belated results for the TMR Game, and entries are open for this week.

I should trim these posts down..

just to jump a conversation from yesterday's thread into todays.

the ideal situation to filter daily comments, is to have a (star) button for comments people would like to flag for others to read.

at the moment as a temporary solution, you can share such comments via twitter (using either homepage or ye olde comments), and i am doing that more and more.

  • Pat W25/02/2010 at 00:54

I know I go on about this subject and it has little to do with F1, but I really do think this is the most interesting area of racing car development in the current era, more so than tweaking F1 cars to the umpteenth degree.

Pressdog got his name because he was a professional journalist for a newspaper. This is him at his best - and I really like this Swift man. Swift has one of the four chassis proposals but they now say they are willing to make a Delta Wing car if that's what's chosen. What's REALLY interesting is that they've been checking out the blogs.

    http://pressdog.typepad.com/dogblog/2010/02/swift-urges.html

    Quote:

“What was neat was when we were invited to share what we have been doing (with the world), it was quite eye-opening to get the fan reaction to everyone’s concepts and proposals. That has been invaluable data. It’s no exaggeration that everyone at Swift and everyone at Dallara and Lola, all they are doing is reading your blogs and other fan reaction. With all this fan feedback -- which I think is unprecedented in this series -- that’s going to inform a lot of things.”

Just thought of a catch phrase for USF1.

USF1: Like Mastercard-Lola but without the car.

So did I. I agree with you about the accelerator/brake lights, though I am a fan of the position lights.

Off to bed, looking forward to the test reports and so forth :)

I can see the point to those. They have had them in sportscars for years with the first three cars in each class having one, two or three lights of the colour for their class.

What are the options? I will choose one then you can get the other just like the tennis dress. :(

  • Jeremy25/02/2010 at 01:42

    Peanut Butter toast

  • Amy25/02/2010 at 01:44

So is the problem that you can't make a decision between several things or that you want something different?

  • Amy25/02/2010 at 01:48

i dont even know what i feel like and there are too many options to even have a list to start with. Before i felt like a baked potato but now that lunch is 15 minutes away that doesnt appeal.

    OK Hot or cold?

    Spicy or not spicy?

red meat, white meat, fish or vegetarian?

Sandwich, meal on a plate or something like pasta?

  • Amy25/02/2010 at 01:57

You think i can make FOUR decisions? I kind of want donuts but I also feel I should have something healthy.

Finally, a blog post done. My reaction to the Autosport story yesterday. I can't believed I echoed the words of Cromwell. My Irish forefathers are going to send the banshees after me for that one.

Now time to start work on the Williams F1 season preview piece.

    In more USF1 news:

"In a meeting between the employees, Windsor and Anderson, Windsor put the question up to the employees: 'Who here doesn't think we'll make Bahrain?' I think he might have meant it somewhat rhetorically, but he was answered nonetheless, and 100 per cent of the staff raised their hands. He was visibly shocked.

I am not sure I will stay for much of Simple Minds, I really really don't know much of their stuff.

Also, the AGPC are running a Facebook-only competition from Monday onwards

    http://www.facebook.com/australiangrandprix

F1 really is getting more fan-friendly by the day.

I assume most may have seen Hamilton's Reebok advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrVJF9Nlw-Y

It's very odd though that Reebok seem to be deliberately targetting burgulars as customers:

    http://www.independent.ie/and-finally/burglars-trainer-choices-revealed-2062064.html

Are they going to change their slogan next? "Reebok, they're great for nicking things in", or perhaps "Reebok, the filth can't catch yer"

Oooh nice one, I'm looking at going back into a PCGE course in a few years time. I was originally accepted into a course at 19 but I felt ridiculously underexperienced and far too young at that age... defnitely a future career path though for me, so if you feel you're up to it, then take a look...

Postgraduate Certificate in General Education (I think)

It is a huge challenge, hence why I just had to say no at that age. It may seem a bit weak minded but I didn't think I'd be able to cope coming straight out of school into something as demanding as that. Like I say, it's still a huge interest to undertake it in the future, but not quite yet.

if it's something you want to do further down the line, you can now do the training in a school - and you get paid for it (a low wage obviously but sure beats tuition fees). the difficulty is finding a school to do it at. would recommend doing some voluntary classroom assisting to show your comittment

Well you'd need to do a degree in education at 19 which is slightly a different prospect.

oops, yeah, I meant to say it was a teaching course that automatically went into a PGCE so it was the typical 3 year course followed up by 1-2 year PGCE/

There are government grants available for it. Most people get their fees paid and a small bursary.

  • Amy25/02/2010 at 12:01

ahh yes, my second-and-third-year flatmate did that because she did an English degree and then didn't know what job to use it with. So now she is an English teacher. Such a cliche :D

That's madness! You can do normal degrees where you do a subject with the education component too. When you graduate you're a qualified teacher. I do think that makes you stupidly young though. Most people wouldn't be ready to teach at 21 I don't think.

this is different. you're entirely school based, although it will link through a university or college and the school pays your wage.

this is different. you're entirely school based, although it will link through a university or college and the school pays your wage.

Why would a school go for this? Under a traditional system they'd be paid for taking on trainees and have no responsibility for formal teaching.

it's analagous (#sidepodwordoftheweek) to an apprenticeship

the school gets paid for this, but they're responsible for paying the person via the local authority (would need to check with Mrs Mav on the details) but they also get someone for the whole year, rather than sporadic periods linked to the university term time

    A PGCE is a huge commitment. Do you even want to be a teacher? {Comment #120}

I don't know, to be honest. I can see how a lot of the skills picked up on the course could be transferable, but I can't see how I'd deal with a class of 30 badly-behaved students and neither can anybody else who actually knows me. Teaching one person how to use a computer package neither of us have seen before is a touch different, but I can't do a course specialising in that form of teaching unless I have a job in teaching already.

The trouble is that the JobCentre have decided I've got to try to get onto such a course because they're fed up of the wide variety of employers messing me and them around... ...but since some of the employers are the same ones that would presumably be employing me if I became a qualified teacher, I doubt I'd get to be a teacher this route even if I wanted to.

Given the trouble I've had getting even voluntary providers to look at me twice despite my CV, I wouldn't hold my hopes up of managing that route...

The school is paid most of the salary for the trainees under the current in-school-qualification system... ...but I see your point.

  • Alison25/02/2010 at 15:39

All i have to look at is a poster with some obviously wonky maths on it. It's making me quite angry...

  • Jim Newman25/02/2010 at 15:39

    Yay for Dream Theater!

Yea, I was happy I remembered to bring it yesterday. The whole week I'd only been stuck with my Meshuggah and Opeth collection. Good to throw something else into the mix.

  • Pat W25/02/2010 at 15:42

I'm never being on time to meet anyone ever again. I've discovered that i'm very impatient...

    uh oh

  • Jim Newman25/02/2010 at 15:45

Is there any word yet as to which cars are the easiest on their tires? I haven't heard anything as of recent.

  • Alison25/02/2010 at 15:47

I'm rarely on time myself. I guess a healthy attitude might be to make more of an effort in future as i see how annoying it is... I'd rather not though :P

  • Jim Newman25/02/2010 at 16:04

So why would you practice a qualy run on anything but fumes?

That and the tires would be totally different overnight as opposed to an installation lap, pit, start run.

BBC believe that it'll be Chandhok at Campos rather than Lopez

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8537003.stm

Interestingly, Senna doesn't seem to be totally confirmed - Campos team boss Colin Kolles refused to confirm Senna's position when contacted by BBC Sport on Thursday, saying only that the team's driver line-up would be announced "soon". - although I can't understand why they would get rid of him now. Would be a bit silly and Senna certainly wouldn't happily go away from a drive I'm sure...

I have the calendar open in a tab at all times. Only times the sidepod one sometimes weirds me out is when it announces birthdays of commenters. Sometimes I don't realize it's a commenter and I'm like "Who the heck is this Janna person!!?"

Don't go to uni then. At least you are going to do something you enjoy and not just something you have been told you should do like a lot of other people. There is always going to be a deadline to meet and you just can worry about all of them.

the porfolio itself would be fine, i'm going to have to talk to my history teacher and plead with him to give me an extra weekend.. i'm going to have to be away 2-3 days (depending on when the interview finishes) which means lots of things to catch up on, and i have an interview the following week too. I hope he'll understand

Why do they paint the blue in the snow like that? It spoils it.

  • Steven Roy25/02/2010 at 17:56

Why do they paint the blue in the snow like that? It spoils it.

In strong sunlight the skiers can see shadows from bumps etc and can work out the terrain. If it is cloudy and the light is diffuse everything looks flat because there are no shadows. That means the skiers won't see bumps or dips etc. So they paint blue lines to try to give them a guide to the topography.

  • Alison25/02/2010 at 17:59

Hmmm, they changed it up today in fact. Example:

    Fin 1

    Fin 2

    Evening all

Bought the new Autosport and F1 Racing earlier, and apparently a question to Mark Webber about whether he'd consider a career in V8 Supercars back home in Oz after he finishes in F1 wasn't enough to make the feature in the magazine this time (again). Still, never mind. Just gotta wait for the next one (again).

Did you get note of the time change between the two? Also, do you know if they've run that configuration before? All the pics I've seen have the sloping down up until today, but I may have missed something.

Try making something of Ferrari's times! http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=2724

I guess they're not wanting to give away what is working and what isn't

    Hey everyone. today has been both a good and bad day. How about everyone else? {Comment #250}

    Er... ...mine's been messy...

  • Jim Newman25/02/2010 at 18:32

Bought the new Autosport and F1 Racing earlier, and apparently a question to Mark Webber about whether he'd consider a career in V8 Supercars back home in Oz after he finishes in F1 wasn't enough to make the feature in the magazine this time (again). Still, never mind. Just gotta wait for the next one (again).

I'm sure Martin Brundle wants Webber to say so Kimi doesn't come back. He probably doesn't want to get another Raikkonen bathroom report on his grid walk.

  • Pat W25/02/2010 at 18:35

Well I have finally had word from Falmouth Uni! :) they liked my project and have given me an interview date in 2 weeks! This is both good and bad news. Good because they like it, bad because i'm no where near ready and need more time to sort out my portfolio and get my coursework in on time and complete my essay for Textiles.

    Congrats :-)

It'll come together if you concentrate on one thing at a time.

I look forward to your report :)

I've been looking at some of todays testing pics.

    - I like that Lotus have a green light :)

    - Ferrari had an odd device on their wheels today.

    - For Amy, looks like Heikki has got his hair sorted at last.

    - Oh and not only was Jenson testing.. but some kind photographer actually got a pic of him out of the car (unlike last time :) )

ahh, no worries. the wheel nut is for faster changes and the inner-rings are a loophole around the banning of spinners, i think.

It's for drivers who don't automatically qualify for a superlicence. If they meet certain requirements and run (I think) 300 km in an F1 car without be too slow or killing anyone they get a licence

Rookies in most motor racing have a rookie plate on the back of the car like an L plate except it is an X not an L and its yellow and black not red and white. But that is not very F1 so they have green lights.

It used to be the first 6 races provided that you got your licence signed at each but I have a feeling the first 6 or so races for each licence upgrade require the plate to be shown if you have just been upgraded to the minimum licence for that class but I could be completely wrong

    the porfolio itself would be fine, i'm going to have to talk to my history teacher and plead with him to give me an extra weekend.. i'm going to have to be away 2-3 days (depending on when the interview finishes) which means lots of things to catch up on, and i have an interview the following week too. I hope he'll understand {Comment #275}

Would it be possible to take some of the things (e.g. the history coursework) with you on the Falmouth trip, to be completed while travelling and waiting for stuff? It could reduce the frustration factor if nothing else.

Remember you also have the option (depending on how quickly other unis write back) to be selective in which interviews you take up. It wouldn't be the first time a student has chosen to concentrate on better/more likely universities because of workload.

This is a good one. Good example that comes to mind is on Top Gear when Clarkson said that if they dont mend his Ford GT that he'll "bone your dog". Everyone in America though he was saying he'd have intercourse with their mutt.

    Start thinking about Silverstone

  • Steven Roy25/02/2010 at 21:31

i'm sad that emily davenport hasn't emailed back yet, i really wanted her to be awesome and reply... be different to the others. If i ever become an f1 photographer i will try to reply to any emails i get sent... :(

You just have to keep bugging them. Just bug them nicely

  • lou25/02/2010 at 21:32

    priorities though, innit.

i have to pay for a trip to falmouth... and to get mounting card etc.. so i stand a chance at the press and editorial photography course... no money for flying and staying in spain for a few days #haspriorities ;)

  • Steven Roy25/02/2010 at 21:32

oh and i have to be in school all day sunday for a musical tech thing... no Spain for me :(

Why are you still doing school musical things if you are so busy?

    Awwwww leave poor Lou alone!!

  • lou25/02/2010 at 21:33

    Start thinking about Silverstone

I asked mum if i could go to the Friday of Silverstone (as 2 GPs in a year aren't really affordable) she said yes. so hopefully i'll be able to go take some pictures then..

  • lou25/02/2010 at 21:34

none of that is related to musicals though?

no.. but i still need to be there on sunday :(

I mean start pestering one of the teams to let you go and take photos .. It worked for those who asked McLaren for a trip to their launch

  • lou25/02/2010 at 21:34

right... Mclaren seem friendly... i may email them about it.. or something... it's a good idea, i never really thought of it that way cause, i mean... f1 teams are surrounded by photographers all the time, they aren't going to want another one under their feet. but if you don't ask you'll never know. 1-0 to the swan i think

  • Steven Roy25/02/2010 at 22:15

It happens. If a swan attacks you stick your arm out to push it away and bang goes your arm

big birds like geese and swans aren't so bad as long as you know how to deal with them. for example if they bit you don't pull you hand away cause that can make it much worse as they have razors for teeth, best not to get in the situation though, it's not nice.

  • RG25/02/2010 at 22:16

. for example if they bit you don't pull you hand away cause that can make it much worse as they have razors for teeth.

But isn't that just like a natural reaction to make?

  • Steven Roy25/02/2010 at 22:16

Geese are vicious. The Ministry of Defence uses them like guard dogs

There were 7 adults and two fairly large chicks with them. They all seemed more interested in fighting with each other or the 100 gulls that were dive bombing us and them. I have discovered that seagulls like chasing sticks. If you throw bread they get there so quickly so I picked up a stick and broke it into small pieces. If you throw a piece of stick 100 gulls chase it and leave the swans in peace until they discover the stick isn't edible
