We have reached Thursday, and for once, I am determined that it won't be a bad day. For a start I'm not at work today, so that helps. Also, testing in Barcelona gets underway today, so that is also going to make it awesome. Watch out for a dedicated thread appearing later on this morning. Elsewhere:
- The second part in Jackie's Safety First blog series appeared yesterday, this time taking a closer look at Driver Aids, and more particularly accelerometers. It's a great read, as is the first in the series about safety at circuits, so make sure you check them both out if you haven't already.
- Not really F1 related at all but I wrote a quick piece on I Heart Franck yesterday regarding Peugeot and their plans for the year. It looks like we'll be live commenting at least one Franck race in 2010, and the real challenge will be to see how much of the 24 hours I can stay awake for this time round.
- It's that time again, time to promote the latest part of Life in the Fast Lane. We're drawing the story to a close now, just two more sections to come and one more vote after this one. Things are getting serious and the decisions are getting more important! If you haven't already, head on over and get your vote in to direct the path of Part 9. (Which, by the way, will be late as it is due on Friday, and we'll be concentrating on Joe that day.) Also a quick shout out to Lindsay Rumbold who in turn gave my story a quick shout out as well. She has a motorsport book due for release soon-ish, so keep an eye out for it.
That should do it for now. Hopefully I won't forget Baby Panda Thursday this week, so it might be a better day for everyone. See you in the comments!
Thursday already? Mine shouldn't be too bad actually, hopefully if the manager in the room next door isn't about I can use the time to catch up with Google Reader, seeing as I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the month end to happen. :)
Belated results for the TMR Game, and entries are open for this week.

I should trim these posts down..
just to jump a conversation from yesterday's thread into todays.
the ideal situation to filter daily comments, is to have a (star) button for comments people would like to flag for others to read.
at the moment as a temporary solution, you can share such comments via twitter (using either homepage or ye olde comments), and i am doing that more and more.
I know I go on about this subject and it has little to do with F1, but I really do think this is the most interesting area of racing car development in the current era, more so than tweaking F1 cars to the umpteenth degree.
Pressdog got his name because he was a professional journalist for a newspaper. This is him at his best - and I really like this Swift man. Swift has one of the four chassis proposals but they now say they are willing to make a Delta Wing car if that's what's chosen. What's REALLY interesting is that they've been checking out the blogs.

Just thought of a catch phrase for USF1.
USF1: Like Mastercard-Lola but without the car.
Commented on Pressdog's post.
:-)
So did I. I agree with you about the accelerator/brake lights, though I am a fan of the position lights.
Off to bed, looking forward to the test reports and so forth :)
I can see the point to those. They have had them in sportscars for years with the first three cars in each class having one, two or three lights of the colour for their class.
Good night
i dont know what to have for lunch :(
What are the options? I will choose one then you can get the other just like the tennis dress. :(
Peanut Butter toast
the options are every single thing within 10 minutes walk of work which is a supermarket the largest market in the southern hemisphere and 3 mall food courts.
So is the problem that you can't make a decision between several things or that you want something different?
i dont even know what i feel like and there are too many options to even have a list to start with. Before i felt like a baked potato but now that lunch is 15 minutes away that doesnt appeal.
OK Hot or cold?
Spicy or not spicy?
red meat, white meat, fish or vegetarian?
Sandwich, meal on a plate or something like pasta?
You think i can make FOUR decisions? I kind of want donuts but I also feel I should have something healthy.
i got donuts. And a borek. Good lunch.
I got distracted after I posted the options. I thought they may trigger an idea
What is a borek?
Fruit salad, asparagus, and a lemon-mesquite chicken?
Looking at some highlights of the Canada - Russia hockey game. Canada has the eye of the tiger back. It is going to be a interesting final if they meet each other again.
*Fixed*
hooray i just won another $200 of vouchers. I am having the best month at work ever
oh and a borek is some sort of turkish pie. Basically dough with lamb and veges in it and only $2.50 so cheap AND tasty
That sounds like what my grandparents used to make for lunch when they went to work in the mines. Except those were a simple potato and chopped beef in a pie dough wrap.
Yeah!!! Some extra little cash for Sidepodspa perhaps?
vouchers must be spent in specific australian stores so not much help for spa. Maybe i could buy some new clothes to take with me i guess
I don't do clothing advice... Steven are you still awake? HELP!
Finally, a blog post done. My reaction to the Autosport story yesterday. I can't believed I echoed the words of Cromwell. My Irish forefathers are going to send the banshees after me for that one.
Now time to start work on the Williams F1 season preview piece.
Don't worry, its one thing I don't need advice in. Unless it was that tennis dress, and I hurt Stevens feelings with that one :D
Tweet from ClaireWillliams
"Buenas dias de Espana (again)! Looking forward to a good day of running / tweeting & uploading pics! Will try not go overboard though!"
My response:
"Just don't run, tweet, and upload pics at the same time, you'll hurt yourself."
Nice one Dan. Thanks.
Have Penske dropped their "Marlboro" colours for this year?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81681
D'Oh! Note to self: read the rest of the news.
Yes, Penske have dropped the Marlboro colours.
In more USF1 news:
"In a meeting between the employees, Windsor and Anderson, Windsor put the question up to the employees: 'Who here doesn't think we'll make Bahrain?' I think he might have meant it somewhat rhetorically, but he was answered nonetheless, and 100 per cent of the staff raised their hands. He was visibly shocked.
Oops!
The more this goes on... the more I am glad that they didn't e-mail me back about a job inquiry.
Yep, you dodged one there!
Morning!
my friend who is coming to the backstreet boys says now I have to go with her if Miley Cyrus ever comes here. oh nooooo!
You could get her to take RG instead?
Is that bad? Simple Minds are playing then GP.
I am not sure I will stay for much of Simple Minds, I really really don't know much of their stuff.
Also, the AGPC are running a Facebook-only competition from Monday onwards
http://www.facebook.com/australiangrandprix
F1 really is getting more fan-friendly by the day.
Grrrrr. I refuse to be part of facebook. I shall buy some scotch and enter the Johnny Walker competition instead!
he'd be in heaven.
I love competitions. Why can't I win that ride in the 2 seater? It's rigged I tell you!
Sounds like you use up all your "winnings" at work!
good point!
hahahahahahahaha! :D
Morning. That just made me smile.
#sorryAmy
Jake Humphrey just tweeted that he is going clothing shopping for the F1 season.
I told him that he needs to copy the wardrobe of Ron Burgundy. Growing the stash would be a bonus as well.
#WhyILoveTwitter
I wonder how many pink shirts he will buy?
Just as long as everyone is clear that Eddie invented the pink shirt :)
Morning everyone :)
I thought it was Mr Button?
wait, oooooooo. :D
I like the suggestion from MotorsportPrint that it should be an "I'm with stupid" tshirt
LOL! :D
hehehehehehe. He HAS to get one of those shirts.
mr c for later new virtual server offering from web fusion: http://www.webfusion.co.uk/virtual-private-servers/
Never tried them before but that seems pretty cheap.
Morning.
A pasty?
here is my borek shop
looks good!
Looks very different to a Cornish Pasty though...
the problem is choosing which one to get but for $2.50 each you could get them all!
well I know that now
Lesson in Social Media
http://furiouswedge.blogspot.com/2010/02/lesson-in-social-media.html
heheh
But I thought it sounded like one too ;)
quite fancy a pasty actually.... or a scottish bridie... they don't sell 'em down here. basically a pie with a different shape but somehow nicer
I assume most may have seen Hamilton's Reebok advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrVJF9Nlw-Y
It's very odd though that Reebok seem to be deliberately targetting burgulars as customers:
http://www.independent.ie/and-finally/burglars-trainer-choices-revealed-2062064.html
Are they going to change their slogan next? "Reebok, they're great for nicking things in", or perhaps "Reebok, the filth can't catch yer"
Good to hear Universities are researching the most relevant of subjects. I've been waiting 21 years to find out just what type of trainers burglars wear. Now I can definitely relax that this vital research has been completed
Morning ;)
Well I was a bit dubious that it might just be the same Reebok-wearing hoodlum doing all the crimes and the police still haven't caught him.
And it was a shock that it turned out to be Lewis.
The cheek of some F1 drivers, eh?
I can see this ad getting complaints that it perpetuates a stereotype...
I thought that too
Same here...
of course, having done all the hard work of stealing the painting, some other idiot goes and gives the game away by taking it down to the photocopy shop...
oh oh oh Mr Lukeh! My mum and uncle are planning a trip to Wales and I am trying to invite myself along :D
:-)
Awesome!! What parts of wales?
The Welsh bit ;9
Welsh rarebit?
All over the place apparently, they are on a mission to meet all the cousins they have never met. But I'll pop in and say hello if I am nearby (and if I'm allowed to tag along :D)
Yes, please do. I live in the city that has no sunshine, so when you find it's constantly cloudy and rainy, you're getting closer :P
sounds awesome!
or you're completely lost and in scotland :P
Seattle?
I'm sure that's why Wales and Scotland have celtic connections - because it just rains in both countries :)

rained up??? Rained on
something like that, it does interfere with the cricket old boy
Not F1 related at all but here's the follow up post to my book shop related post: http://gamboling.co.uk/2010/02/25/liar-liar-pants-on-fire/
you are such a liar you big liar!
I am a bit like that!
I think you do well to remember anything that happened in 1997 full stop, regardless of how the details may change over time.
i prefer the new version... can't wait for the the 2016 re-mix... :-D
:)
Morning all.
Just.
Morning Christine
Morning :)
1st day off?
can I have a day off tomorrow? I am scared of my first day in my new role.
awww... you'll be great surely.
Yup. I wish I worked for Sidepodcast full time, much more acceptable hours.
as long as everyone I am responsible for gets to work on time and doesn't call in sick, thats the first hurdle over.
you should say to your work that coming in early is against your sidepodreligon they'll have to let you come in late.
Christine do you mind if I use a F1Minute picture for a blog post?
#MFC erm that boycott from yesterday is over: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8536195.stm
Not at all, go for it.
If we do that, do we need to add a link or is the watermark enough credit?
A link is preferable.
Have added one in the caption anyways, might as well to be courteous :)
Understood. Thanks for letting us use them :)
Haha :)
Excellent Gav... Good Pluggage... (can't reply as such due to thread)
I went to see my JobCentre adviser today and she told me to try getting into teaching through a funded course such as a PCGE. To say this was a surprise expansion of the "librarian/admin assistant" path is a bit like saying the ocean is damp.
OMG again! Sorry :( :( :(
A PGCE is a huge commitment. Do you even want to be a teacher?
Oooh nice one, I'm looking at going back into a PCGE course in a few years time. I was originally accepted into a course at 19 but I felt ridiculously underexperienced and far too young at that age... defnitely a future career path though for me, so if you feel you're up to it, then take a look...
What is a PCGE course?
Postgraduate Certificate in General Education (I think)
Basically a teaching qualification for people with a degree already. It's a proper slog though. I remember my mum doing hers....
Ah. Cheers. We had something similar in NZ.
It is a huge challenge, hence why I just had to say no at that age. It may seem a bit weak minded but I didn't think I'd be able to cope coming straight out of school into something as demanding as that. Like I say, it's still a huge interest to undertake it in the future, but not quite yet.
if it's something you want to do further down the line, you can now do the training in a school - and you get paid for it (a low wage obviously but sure beats tuition fees). the difficulty is finding a school to do it at. would recommend doing some voluntary classroom assisting to show your comittment
Well you'd need to do a degree in education at 19 which is slightly a different prospect.
oops, yeah, I meant to say it was a teaching course that automatically went into a PGCE so it was the typical 3 year course followed up by 1-2 year PGCE/
There are government grants available for it. Most people get their fees paid and a small bursary.
ahh yes, my second-and-third-year flatmate did that because she did an English degree and then didn't know what job to use it with. So now she is an English teacher. Such a cliche :D
That's madness! You can do normal degrees where you do a subject with the education component too. When you graduate you're a qualified teacher. I do think that makes you stupidly young though. Most people wouldn't be ready to teach at 21 I don't think.
I'll bet that's how they get a lot of English teachers, judging from the standard of mine!
this is different. you're entirely school based, although it will link through a university or college and the school pays your wage.
Why would a school go for this? Under a traditional system they'd be paid for taking on trainees and have no responsibility for formal teaching.
I was reading something on a twitter friends blog the other day and I noticed something in her side bar that said, "Didn't your mother ever teach you it's rude to lurk".
Maybe you should add it to the bottom of the RSS feed? :)
Ping!! http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/yay-or-nay-electronic-pitstop-lollipops/
:-)
it's analagous (#sidepodwordoftheweek) to an apprenticeship
the school gets paid for this, but they're responsible for paying the person via the local authority (would need to check with Mrs Mav on the details) but they also get someone for the whole year, rather than sporadic periods linked to the university term time
Oooh, Wayne Bridge is refusing to play for England...
Is that the guy who went out with the model John Terry had an affair with?
yep
A PGCE is a huge commitment. Do you even want to be a teacher? {Comment #120}
I don't know, to be honest. I can see how a lot of the skills picked up on the course could be transferable, but I can't see how I'd deal with a class of 30 badly-behaved students and neither can anybody else who actually knows me. Teaching one person how to use a computer package neither of us have seen before is a touch different, but I can't do a course specialising in that form of teaching unless I have a job in teaching already.
The trouble is that the JobCentre have decided I've got to try to get onto such a course because they're fed up of the wide variety of employers messing me and them around... ...but since some of the employers are the same ones that would presumably be employing me if I became a qualified teacher, I doubt I'd get to be a teacher this route even if I wanted to.
Thursday? Where the Massa has this week gone?!

Given the trouble I've had getting even voluntary providers to look at me twice despite my CV, I wouldn't hold my hopes up of managing that route...
Why would a school go for this? Under a traditional system they'd be paid for taking on trainees and have no responsibility for formal teaching. {Comment #134}
The school is paid most of the salary for the trainees under the current in-school-qualification system... ...but I see your point.

Reporters' Roundtable Podcast: HTML 5 vs. Flash: http://www.cnet.com/8301-30976_1-10452994-10348864.html
Just about to start listening - normally this is a good series and it might be of interest to some of you ;)
Afternoon. I have soup :P
You all well?
Ooh, cool. I already know the answer though:
HTML5 = working Mac
Flash = exploding Mac
:)
Lunch break for me and I've been reading an interesting thing about team principals (subscription)
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2642
Yes thanks, had shrimps and salad for lunch ;)
Yaaaay :D
I am the soup queen.
I had soup for dinner last night. Tonight I had left over jam donuts from lunch. #nothealthy
#SoupIsNotAproperMeal
Just don't you even go there....
Sounds perfect to me!
Shh you!
Yes it is - especially when it has meat and veggies in it. A bit of bread and it's actually very good for you!
Sounds like you may have crossed the line into Casserole/stew!
I made soup with lots of beans. It was basically stew. That's a meal....
GRRRR but crucially still a soup!!!!!
mine was just pumpkin soup. Then I had custard for dessert. Sometimes I'm too lazy to chew.
Soup is too good to chew! No excuses necessary....
Sometimes I'm also too lazy to lift a glass/cup so I use a straw. I am super lazy.
Speaking of which, why am I still up? Must sleep! Must be not late to work!
If you say it isn't, then it is ;)
#employeeoftheyear
Night!
:D :D :D
Proof by the Nick Argument: if he makes a statement, the opposite is true ;)
This is correct
:(
You didnt like my paradox?
NO!
GP2 Bahrain qualifying result:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81693
You can't agree with the theorem - that is a (P^-P) argument. You contradict your own reasoning by saying "you are correct" and then "you are incorrect" :)
This theory is infinitely plausable
Now you sound like Eddie Jordan :P
Back to work!
Before I go, Mr C and Christine - thank you for the plug on your podcast, listened this morning. That was great :) fankooo.
either a) a typo or b) misread the question - the universal balance is restored
I'd say typo seems likely :)
#sorrynick
See ya later ;)
I'm going to miss all this live test info tomorrow. Boo for stock take.
Wow - it's a real Pea-souper outside...
Or is that a Pea Stew Nick? :D
not unless there are big solid chunks in it!
Well, there's no peas in it either because it's fog ;)
What kind of soup is pure liquid?? Maybe that's why you don't like soup.... Someone's only made you horrible soup in the past?
A soup made from stock ... flavoured water? Sounds gross, like hotdog water!
instant soup. just add water.
Guys, can I just ask a completely dense question....
What are show notes? I'm finally caught up to date on your podcast front but every week you mention these show notes and I have not a clue what they are....
The notes we make beforehand in order to do a show.
But where do I find them. It's usually things you say you'll link in the notes or whatever. I subscribe in itunes. Nothing really leaps out at me.
Oh I see, sorry. All the links you need are in the blog post for each episode.
Sorta related question. BOL has these notes as 'song lyrics' so that they appear on the Touch. But why? It's not like you can click on them or anything...
Ooooh a revelation. I'll stop being so dense now!
we ought mention that on the next show. we used to explain it, but many years ago.
We probably didn't, we're quite rubbish at that kind of thing.
Did Saddam Hussein model himself on Darth Vader? It's weird question, is this the answer...
http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/culturelab/2010/02/did-saddam-model-himself-on-darth-vader.php
the one sure thing is that George Dubbya is no Luke Skywalker...
what does that make the minister of information? 'there are no x-wings here'
Moff Tarkin?
gezundheit
I can't remember who that is :)
Aw come on, Peter Cushing in the first film!
ah :)
Charming... to the last
Good morning Ladies and Gents. Got my coffee in hand and a bunch to catch up on with todays test. Luckily I have that as it's looking to be a slow day in the office.
I'm never being on time to meet anyone ever again. I've discovered that i'm very impatient...
Hi Jim.
Slow day here too, I'm glad of the test otherwise I'd be even more bored than I already am!
Possibly want's to lay down a quick time to get good press and distract folks from the issues with the vehicle.
Yesterday was dragging on. All I had to entertain me was my Dream Theater collection and a bit of SPC chat when I could sneak it in =)
Today I have a bunch of stuff to keep me entertained. At least until lunch...
Yay for Dream Theater!
All i have to look at is a poster with some obviously wonky maths on it. It's making me quite angry...
Yea, I was happy I remembered to bring it yesterday. The whole week I'd only been stuck with my Meshuggah and Opeth collection. Good to throw something else into the mix.
uh oh
Is there any word yet as to which cars are the easiest on their tires? I haven't heard anything as of recent.
I'm rarely on time myself. I guess a healthy attitude might be to make more of an effort in future as i see how annoying it is... I'd rather not though :P
That and the tires would be totally different overnight as opposed to an installation lap, pit, start run.
Grand Moff Tarkin
Hi Peeps
10 Points to the clapper ;)
Mission accomplished. Phew!
Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuubbbbbbbbbbbbbb!
Now, all of you. Come on
Oh I wish... It's only 11:30 here. Lil early for a pint.
That's what Jpan said
Spoilsport
Alex won't come out to play
Because I'm a friend I'm not letting him in the same establishment as me as he may want to see Katherine before midnight
I have already had a head start on you as well which means that my defences are down. I would never be able to make myself leave.
#youareagoodfriend
Ok, just this once, I'll let you do shots
By lunchtime it's back on the beer though, people will talk
Never too early! 11:30 here too.
I am after all 'a bad influence, who will get you drunk'
Sounds like a plan. These SNMP walks of these devices can wait. Jack Daniels needs my attention.
It's like you have a blurb :)
People of Naples, Italy
Answer your phone so I can book your flight home
Ok, not all of you, just my mate who is now keeping me out of the pub
We need a jingle for the podcast.
It's my Twitter bio [well, the 1st half is]
Can anyone tell me when todays debrief/digest will be available to download from itunes?
Cheers
hi miles, christine will likely put it up this evening. i'm not sure it's been recorded yet, but before midnight certainly.
myles, sorry, not miles.
Digest is back?
*cough* calendar ;)
so busted.
I ought to get into the habit of using that. :)
:)
I could be harsh and say I don't trust it after things were moved so much..
i made it my homepage. it's the only way i could keep out of trouble.
I tried to add it to iGoogle but with all mine as well it wouldn't let it, it was too big!
BBC believe that it'll be Chandhok at Campos rather than Lopez
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8537003.stm
Interestingly, Senna doesn't seem to be totally confirmed - Campos team boss Colin Kolles refused to confirm Senna's position when contacted by BBC Sport on Thursday, saying only that the team's driver line-up would be announced "soon". - although I can't understand why they would get rid of him now. Would be a bit silly and Senna certainly wouldn't happily go away from a drive I'm sure...
I have the calendar open in a tab at all times. Only times the sidepod one sometimes weirds me out is when it announces birthdays of commenters. Sometimes I don't realize it's a commenter and I'm like "Who the heck is this Janna person!!?"
I'd love to use the calendar as my calendar on my ipod, but it's such an annoyance to set up! Silly
Mine says Guinness and is blocked out for the rest of the day ;)
Barman!
[I may be some time]
I'm going to see if it'll let me add two smaller ones
although I'm going home now :)
Morning / afternoon all.
I love it. I fall asleep with the sound of my twitter deck updating me about testing and then I wake up to see all the results.
Hey everyone. today has been both a good and bad day. How about everyone else?
I put tomatos on my salad. And I'm eating them.
It may not seem like a big deal, but it is.
I hate tomatoes. That'd be a huge deal for me. Not sure why I'd want to do it though...
Everything alright? Has been a big standard day personally. Typical thursday
I thought I hated tomatos, too. Then I had a pizza the other day that had slices of tomatos on it. I'm thinking I don't like raw tomatos but I do like cooked ones
i'm just so tired now :( and i've noticed how much i am trying to cram into the next 4 weeks O.O
Apparently USF1 are making the toaster!
http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/02/25/us-f1-were-making-the-toaster/
Hello Lou :D
I've had a pretty good day. Got a lot of stuff sorted out. Hopefully I can just put a lot of junk out my head now....
I'll eat them cooked but not raw. I wouldn't say I particularly liked them ever though.
ah that's good :) feeling any better today?
Yeah mystery illness seems to be improving.
I don't think I'll intentionally put them on a salad again.
yay!!!
Well I have finally had word from Falmouth Uni! :) they liked my project and have given me an interview date in 2 weeks! This is both good and bad news. Good because they like it, bad because i'm no where near ready and need more time to sort out my portfolio and get my coursework in on time and complete my essay for Textiles.
Flying Spaghetti Monster help me, I would probably buy one if they put them up for sale!
Second.
"which if true at least demonstrates that the guys on the shop floor have a sense of humour."
surely it should be: which if true at least demonstrates that they've got nothing better to do.
Afternoon!
Mav - great work on the graph...have pondered some thoughts for you on Twitpic...
!?!!?
I think it demonstrates both.
Evening all.
:D
Congrats
It also suggests that the shopfloor have more business sense than the management
i was happy about it for about 1/2 an hour... then i realised the amount of work, and i'm not looking forward to it :(
You know what, after hearing about how toxic it is in that factory, I am surprised that they haven't started doing this sooner.
All I can say is I have my check ready to buy a toaster.
If it really is too much for you, don't be shy to ring them up and ask for a new date.
Don't go to uni then. At least you are going to do something you enjoy and not just something you have been told you should do like a lot of other people. There is always going to be a deadline to meet and you just can worry about all of them.
the porfolio itself would be fine, i'm going to have to talk to my history teacher and plead with him to give me an extra weekend.. i'm going to have to be away 2-3 days (depending on when the interview finishes) which means lots of things to catch up on, and i have an interview the following week too. I hope he'll understand
Nice to see Apple trying to sort its supply chain out. #mfc
http://www.evertiq.com/news/16279
i'm fine with photographic deadlines. it's just when i have another project to get done for another uni, and x2 lots of coursework, and x3 school trips it stresses me out a bit
Concentrate on the stuff you need for your future. If the history qualification is not needed tell that teacher to sod off
Olympic timing system has failed completely. It's saying a woman who hasn't skied yet is in the lead....
am going to look forward to that :D
Mancuso skied about 5 mins ago...
Obviously you need to do well in all your A Level subjects to meet an offer from a uni though.
oops
Enjoy it.
Someone else went down just now and no-one knows what that time was at all. I'd laugh if she had to go again....
Then a time mysteriously appeared for the lady still in the gate. Then it was all deleted....
Bernie doing their live timing?
the most i need for Uni is 200ucas points.. so two Cs and a D... i should get more than that.
Why do they paint the blue in the snow like that? It spoils it.
In strong sunlight the skiers can see shadows from bumps etc and can work out the terrain. If it is cloudy and the light is diffuse everything looks flat because there are no shadows. That means the skiers won't see bumps or dips etc. So they paint blue lines to try to give them a guide to the topography.
Hmmm I think it's cheating!
Try skiing in flat light!!! It's a bloody nightmare!
Letting them see the track is cheating? Maybe they should blindfold them
Awwww I feel very sorry for Mancuso :(
She's basically not got a medal because they let her start yesterday after a crash before it was cleared. Seems very harsh.... Why would they ever let you start with someone out on the course....
have made a minor backend update to comments, performance related only, hopefully nothing broke... nothing should've changed either.
Right...gotta go.
Cinema tonight, going to see Avatar in 3D...
I had an error message when I tried to post a minute ago but all is well now I think.
In fact no. I'm still getting error messages. It is posting though....
ooh, i check
Haven't noticed anything
Just got a could not submit pop up
might be better now?
Test
Worked first time
a test from ye olde comments...
Mine was doohickey
yeah, i forgot a file. just checking that all is well across the site.
You forgot something? I refuse to believe it!
The start of that ski jump looks terrifying! I'm surprised there aren't more accidents where people fall off that tiny bar before they're ready to go.
#confidential
Did anyone notice that Ferrari changed up their fin today? They may have changed it last week, but the week before last they had the sloping down fin, now they have the straight across to the front of the rear wing.
Hmmm, they changed it up today in fact. Example:
Fin 1
Fin 2
Toaster fever has hit Twitter. USF1 should of done this sooner... they could of paid for at least half a wing.
Teams will run different set ups at different circuits so I wouldn't read too much into this
changed it after lunch
Did you get note of the time change between the two? Also, do you know if they've run that configuration before? All the pics I've seen have the sloping down up until today, but I may have missed something.
We have been saying it since the first video was made. I can't believe they did not have merchandise ready for the original launch. They should have been raking in money from day 1
Evening all
Bought the new Autosport and F1 Racing earlier, and apparently a question to Mark Webber about whether he'd consider a career in V8 Supercars back home in Oz after he finishes in F1 wasn't enough to make the feature in the magazine this time (again). Still, never mind. Just gotta wait for the next one (again).
Ferrari's times are very up and down today as they tested a lot of other new stuff too. It's supposed to be new for today according to press release
Try making something of Ferrari's times! http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=2724
I guess they're not wanting to give away what is working and what isn't
Hey everyone. today has been both a good and bad day. How about everyone else? {Comment #250}
Er... ...mine's been messy...
I'm sure Martin Brundle wants Webber to say so Kimi doesn't come back. He probably doesn't want to get another Raikkonen bathroom report on his grid walk.
Congrats :-)
It'll come together if you concentrate on one thing at a time.
Well I have finally had word from Falmouth Uni! :) they liked my project and have given me an interview date in 2 weeks! This is both good and bad news. Good because they like it, bad because i'm no where near ready {Comment #262}
This is very good news! Yes, it's a bit of a crush to get everything done, but it's still great to know your work is liked by Falmouth.
Why did Ferrari stop running so early?
I look forward to your report :)
they're laps, not time - ferrari did less laps in the morning because of electrical probs
Thanks
I've been looking at some of todays testing pics.
- I like that Lotus have a green light :)
- Ferrari had an odd device on their wheels today.
- For Amy, looks like Heikki has got his hair sorted at last.
- Oh and not only was Jenson testing.. but some kind photographer actually got a pic of him out of the car (unlike last time :) )
that's a rookie light for fauzy.
as discussed be me during sunday's show, christine just yawned ;)
ah i didn't know that. i still like it :)
i haven't had time to listen to this weeks show yet #sorrymrc :( will listen on the train tomorrow or later this evening :)
ahh, no worries. the wheel nut is for faster changes and the inner-rings are a loophole around the banning of spinners, i think.
This could be the last day he ever has a green light. He must be close to the rookie mileage limit now
ahhh that's kinda cool. it looks like a weapon of war though...:D
They still claim that it is not part of the wheel but part of the brake duct. Load of bull of course
i feel like i've missed a huge thing.. or maybe i've forgotten (which is very possible), i didn't realise there were rookie mileages...
It's for drivers who don't automatically qualify for a superlicence. If they meet certain requirements and run (I think) 300 km in an F1 car without be too slow or killing anyone they get a licence
Evening.
Anyone know what today's Thursday Thought question is?
*waves* ;)
oh buggger.
OMG... from not wanting to blog, suddenly she's unstoppable! :-D
How rude?
Rookie's have lights, well I didn't know that #F1CoolFact
:D
apparently it's:
Did I say I was going to do it? .. I'm just curious
they flash continuously whilst out on track. warns the other drivers.
hehehe.
It made me smile as I understand the sentiment. I've looked at the calendar before and not realised who it is. I have synced the calendar to my phone (HTC Hero on Android) and it's fantastic
Rookies in most motor racing have a rookie plate on the back of the car like an L plate except it is an X not an L and its yellow and black not red and white. But that is not very F1 so they have green lights.
where is this light?
It's also bad of me to quote the one part of the comment entirely out of context of the conversation
The green light is here
it's the normal rear light, it just does green as well as red.
I likes
A volunteer. I think if you have an idea for a question you should do it. Is there not a wiki page?
I had no idea there was a different light!
Me too, I've only been here a couple of minutes and I've learnt something new about F1 already Yay!
#SafetyFact
Ooh yeah :D
I thought the rookie plate was only applicable for your first 15 (or however many) races ever, rather than in that series..
There is a wiki page for Thursday Thoughts. No-one volunteered.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Thursday+Thoughts
If nobody has thought of one, how about:
Do you think Richard Branson regrets buying Manor instead of investing in Brawn?
you didn't?
brilliant! blog that, and we can respond.
It used to be the first 6 races provided that you got your licence signed at each but I have a feeling the first 6 or so races for each licence upgrade require the plate to be shown if you have just been upgraded to the minimum licence for that class but I could be completely wrong
oh I have just discovered not to put things in > and
I'm sure those finishes out of the points throughout the season will reverse his desire to "support the underdog".
Correct. I didn't volunteer anyone. I now volunteer Jackie.
haha I'll eventualyy get it right
Oii .. Mav's just blogged for the day
you're only allowed one a day?
I like the pretty pic of the Red Bull lol
Seems fair... :-)
He didn't volunteer Mav
You want me to post the question?
:)
usually the question master posts the question and offers an answer.
we're just prempting you being bor...
I'm not bor** ... but I'll put the question up. Gimme a couple of mins
no rush.
Given the short notice you could post the question now and your answer later
the porfolio itself would be fine, i'm going to have to talk to my history teacher and plead with him to give me an extra weekend.. i'm going to have to be away 2-3 days (depending on when the interview finishes) which means lots of things to catch up on, and i have an interview the following week too. I hope he'll understand {Comment #275}
Would it be possible to take some of the things (e.g. the history coursework) with you on the Falmouth trip, to be completed while travelling and waiting for stuff? It could reduce the frustration factor if nothing else.
Remember you also have the option (depending on how quickly other unis write back) to be selective in which interviews you take up. It wouldn't be the first time a student has chosen to concentrate on better/more likely universities because of workload.
even better.
t's for drivers who don't automatically qualify for a superlicence. If they meet certain requirements and run (I think) 300 km in an F1 car without be too slow or killing anyone they get a licence {Comment #339}
300 km is correct, Steven :)
Whilst we're volunteering people, if anyone has any thoughts for Friday Fun, I'm all ears.
What about expressions which make sense in your language but if taken literally would make someone learning your language totally confused ;)
This is a good one. Good example that comes to mind is on Top Gear when Clarkson said that if they dont mend his Ford GT that he'll "bone your dog". Everyone in America though he was saying he'd have intercourse with their mutt.
Given that USF1 are giving up F1 to make toasers, what non car products should the other teams make if they gave up the sport?
what's the wiki sign up page for Thursday Thoughts?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Thursday+Thoughts
Thanks Steven
ping http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/
I have created a Friday Fun page on the wiki where people can volunteer and log questions. It is a bit basic but can be tarted up later.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Friday+Fun
Ahh, just in time for the last two :)
yay! thanks you.
You're welcome :)
and another ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/02/25/london-calling/
thursday thoughts to follow.
Last two?
Only two more Friday Funs before the season gets going.
Not funny :(
booo :D
Aww, sorry. We can tweak it to list out the ones we've done too. It'll be a good index.
Quite disappointed on the whole for tomorrow. I'm doing a stocktake then meeting up with a mate after, which is fine, but I'll miss testing and Joe news and probably the rugby match too..
argh, stock take.
Who's evil idea was it to do a stock take on a friday!
Whoever decided the last day of the month is on Sunday..
quick nod to Taku who is 2nd in the IndyCar test at the minute.. http://www.indycar.com/racecontrol/player.php?type=true
Slightly better than anything Bernie supplies.
Interesting new post from Dank
hd streaming video?! i want it now!
Has anyone seen a list in pictures of all the cars and associated drivers and helmets on a 'poster'?
Just having trouble with all the new colors and helmets. Want to know who is who during the first race
Someone has a post like that but I can't remember who. Maybe RG?
Either Lukeh or Andy Blackmore...
Andy Blackmore usually writes about them on Facebook
F1 Wolf has the helmets: http://www.f1wolf.com/2010/02/2010-f1-drivers-helmets.html
I find that very useful.
I have seen the helmets and was going to do my own but thought someone hopefully would have done it already
If I got my times right, which is by no means likely, the first race is at 5pm UK time on the day of the Bahrain GP. Should finish by 7 in time for the Debrief, but then you'd have no show because you won't have written it :)
doh!
the "spotters guide" website appears to have gone awol :(
What?
http://www.spotterguides.com/
usually has what you're after. is currently broken.
Thanks I will check it out
hehehehehehe
:)
I've just had a bowl of cereal. Loved it. I feel like a right student.
I had coco pops the other day. WICKED!
You ate cereal while watching Masterchef?
How did you know? :P
Masterchef was on therefore you were watching
i want to go take pictures of testing!!!
these
are
awesome!
:D
You know me too well...
with milk? or were you really studenty by having the first thing yo could find on it instead?
you should tweet @f1photos, i'm sure he'd know a way to get you in.
I use soya. I'm not a huge dairy fan.
i wouldn't be able to get to spain though? even if he could..
i'm sad that emily davenport hasn't emailed back yet, i really wanted her to be awesome and reply... be different to the others. If i ever become an f1 photographer i will try to reply to any emails i get sent... :(
mmmmmm... has to be something odd like orange juice or the last of the cans of beer to be fully studenty
tis only a plane ride away. what you got planned sat/sun? you're in london friday, just get on a plane.
french traffic control permitting
:)
not sure if you read the comments earlier... i've got a portfolio to produce! silly unis #loveyoufalmouthdontrejectmepleeeeaaasseee
oh and i have to be in school all day sunday for a musical tech thing... no Spain for me :(
priorities though, innit.
Start thinking about Silverstone
You just have to keep bugging them. Just bug them nicely
i have to pay for a trip to falmouth... and to get mounting card etc.. so i stand a chance at the press and editorial photography course... no money for flying and staying in spain for a few days #haspriorities ;)
Why are you still doing school musical things if you are so busy?
none of that is related to musicals though?
Awwwww leave poor Lou alone!!
I asked mum if i could go to the Friday of Silverstone (as 2 GPs in a year aren't really affordable) she said yes. so hopefully i'll be able to go take some pictures then..
no.. but i still need to be there on sunday :(
I mean start pestering one of the teams to let you go and take photos .. It worked for those who asked McLaren for a trip to their launch
I enjoy it, it's my last year, and i would be killed alive if i quit now..
if you go as a press snapper, it's free.
exactly!
(although mclaren did ask bloggers, no pestering needed)
*clings to Alison for support* ;)
Hehehe I used to get that a lot though. It's annoying. You should be allowed to complain without being pestered to give up things you like doing.
*must be a girl thing*
I am not having a go but earlier Lou was saying how she was struggling for time so the musical seems the obvious one to drop
having said that, if had an f1 blog...
*if lou had
You don't want to be killed alive
She has a blog with F1 pics... write to that nice Mr Brawn with some of the pics you took at Brooklands, he can only say no.
lotus made a similar offer
right... Mclaren seem friendly... i may email them about it.. or something... it's a good idea, i never really thought of it that way cause, i mean... f1 teams are surrounded by photographers all the time, they aren't going to want another one under their feet. but if you don't ask you'll never know. Williams seem friendly too...
Mr Brawn's team don't exist anymore ;)
Or.. ask Joe tomorrow if he can suggest any contacts.
you should ask williams and lotus if they need someone to "leak" next year's car
i can't drop it.. it's really not in my nature to say no.. specially to something i love. oh... but i did tell my teacher i'd not be having anymore to do with that stupid painter decorating thing.. and that i didn't mind if she thought me a failure as a prefect for not completing it on my own. I have more important things to worry about.
*cries*
Can i borrow her for a bit?
#sorrylou
First comment of the day and it goes wrong. :(
As I was going to say, no one seems friendlier than Peter Sauber...
and that was followed by, Evening all.
:D
i suppose.... *lets Alison go*
true story.
Write to all of them who are within travelling distance
hehe... thanks!
hello
i never knew about this...
Good for you. Sooner or later you will learn to say no.
mclaren just put out a three line press thing. i can't remember if we put it in the comments, be we had work to do, and we've no intention of becoming journalists in today's climate anyhow.
didn't think about it from a photographers perspective until 10 mins ago, sorry.
lotus put a tweet!
i think this was mclaren's note: http://www.mclaren.com/latestnews/mclaren-news.php?article=402
i can't see the lotus tweet though, wasn't there something on the press site?
right... Woking it is then ;) hehe i could get to the others i suppose :P i shall compose an email after i've finished my work for the evening ;)
maybe, i just saw a tweet, but not sure who put it out - might even have been fake lotus
Hinwil is within travelling distance...
no problem, going to the mclaren launch would have been impossible what will school i think..next year though.... :D
affordable travelling distance?:P
from @ClaireVWilliams: Signing off, hope you enjoyed our updates today. It's going to be a late one for the boys so think of them working late tonight!
reply from @f1photos: a few of them have just walked into the hotel. Straight to the bar.
:-D
hehehehehe!!!
aaaahhhh okay. After i get all these scary interviews out of the way i'll possibly email a BTCC team or something if i don't get any joy with f1 teams. can't do any harm, and they may be happier to help. who knows.
Well, erm, a cheap flight to Zurich and a few trains to Hinwill, I'm sure it isn't too hard...
when i win the lottery i'll go.. course i'd have to enter first but ;)
I've decided to petition for a 28 hour day, and an 8th day be added at the end of each week. Who's with me?
Obviously the extra day would fall on a weekend.
me!!
Works for me
Yup!
Can we just not count commuting hours instead?
christine is working real hard today, here's f1m: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/02/25/25-feb-10-webber-leads-day-one-of-barcelona-testing/
That sounds too complex for a weekend day.
seems easier to just become a uni student again...
Alison thinks a swan can break your arm,
whilst possibly technical plausible i cant see how a swan could ever manouver itself and a person into a position to do so!
what do you think?
I agree. Swans are evil.
sold
Pardon? In what way are swans evil?
I've injured myself in all different ways, its probably possible.
you've convinced us - and we're all going out to buy anti-swan armour right this second
Sounds like my days at uni. I do remember 50 hour weekends awake, and 24 hours asleep was the norm..... damn Australian race!
You can see it in their eyes. They hate us.
But.........
BUT..............
Christine, I'm disappointed now!
The hissing too. Don't forget the hissing.
In what?
:D hehehe
Alison has declared herself the winner
Yes!
when swans attack!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/3746579.stm
and you were worried about shark attacks!
I always thought swans were graceful creatures and that it was geese that were the violent ones that people used as guard pets.
how on earth did it do that?
Hmm. Not sure about geese, haven't had much dealings with them.
we used to have geese. they are awful.. well they can be. Swans are worse when they are angry though.
I've found a news article about a swan that attacked and killed a goose but it's locked away on the nytimes
1-0 to the swan i think
It happens. If a swan attacks you stick your arm out to push it away and bang goes your arm
big birds like geese and swans aren't so bad as long as you know how to deal with them. for example if they bit you don't pull you hand away cause that can make it much worse as they have razors for teeth, best not to get in the situation though, it's not nice.
But isn't that just like a natural reaction to make?
Geese are vicious. The Ministry of Defence uses them like guard dogs
Although I know they are vicious I had a group of swans eating out of my hand last week so they are not all vicious.
yep it is.. :( i had evil pets :P
wow. although they are usually vicious when they have young chicks with them though. that's awesome though :)
I got stared down by a swan once - scary stuff!
There were 7 adults and two fairly large chicks with them. They all seemed more interested in fighting with each other or the 100 gulls that were dive bombing us and them. I have discovered that seagulls like chasing sticks. If you throw bread they get there so quickly so I picked up a stick and broke it into small pieces. If you throw a piece of stick 100 gulls chase it and leave the swans in peace until they discover the stick isn't edible
Nice one!
Do you want to tell us anything else that Alison says that you think is stupid Nick? :)
I'm always after ways to beat seagulls BTW, the annoying ******** ruin EVERY summer by breeding on our roofs and causing a racket at 4am. Ear plugs are well used.
That by Nick's law, if you think it is impossible then it definitely can happen ;)
Shame you are so far away because there are some good photos to be had because everyone feeds them. There was a young boy about 3 years old who had them eating from his hand
Right guys, I'm heading off to bed. 3 days of doing jogging runs at 6am has nearly killed my bodyclock. I get an hour's lay-in tonight! Will doohickey from both trains.
That's a horrible feeling when you realise you make a mistake like that on a post! All corrected now ;)
christine just spotted webber is on twitter:
@andrewbensonf1: For those who don't know, Red Bull star, all-round top bloke & BBC associate Mark Webber has joined Twitter @AussieGrit
http://twitter.com/AussieGrit/
what's the link, chap?
Awesome!
I posted it in the testing thread: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/f1-testing-barcelona-day-1/
(was that correct to do that?) - Maverick kindly pointed out the error. It's annoying because I should have been more careful C&P'ing!!!
tis cool. just missed it.
I think I need new glasses. I read that as Aussie Girl. That would have been a great first tweet for him
so i have been here an hour and i have done nothing because i cant log into any of the systems i have to use. Hooray!
He thought better of it and went to bed....
What's happened to James Allen's Website? http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2010/02/barcelona-day-1-its-all-about-the-wings/
MR C!!!! I GAVE YOU ONE JOB AND YOU CAN'T EVEN DO THAT!!
Just watched some rally, RT'd Webber and come back to..
uh oh :)
You have time to find your remote
Poor Nick
He's changed it to the mobile site, for some reason
what did i do wrong?
fine for me.
You've changed your tune :P
oops
f1bigpicture? blog post?...fixing something?...
I cherry picked you a list of new drivers that I needed recorded for my digest preview. New drivers. Ones that did not exist in the 2009 season.
NICO ROSBERG?? Seriously?
Tis appearing as if it were a mobile wordpress site on a mobile, obviously, for me
hulk! i meant the hulk.
$%^&
:D
Ah!
Who me?
To be fair... anonymous-looking Williams driver, I can see how it could be done
i can fix :(
He was probably upset at having to say Michael Schumacher too.
You better had do. Sabotage, I tells ya.
Night guys ;)
NICO ROSBERG?? Seriously? {Comment #558}
And I thought the Sebastiéeans were confusing - at least they were polite enough to have slightly different spellings for their first names...
uh-oh..
I wrote it down on a piece of paper and everything.
i can't read!
Didn't Mr. C. say that he can't read aloud?
Paper? Am I in the wrong place?
IT'S ONLY TWO WORDS!!
he got the first one right :)
Be fair. He got one of them right.
how about i do thursday thoughts?
:D
next time just tweet it :)
*runs*
and 50% is a pss
pass not pss
We'll be wondering why you are saying Richard Madely bought into Honda in 2009
I think that is fair recompense.
:D
:)
I'm heading off, have a good time tomorrow guys :) Night!
night chappie.
Blug alert: I've done a piece on the USF1 factory staff's loyalty and humour.
For anyone still about, the daily will be a tiny bit late.
#needsmorethursday
Never thought I'd be agreeing to something like that, but yes.
Actually, if you take into account that it's not normally published until six minutes past, it's not that late: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/02/26/daily-26th-february-2010/
