Google updated their Chrome web browser on Wednesday including a long awaited feature (by myself at least) that converts the spoken word into text. This one fantastic feature might just revolutionise the conversation on Sidepodcast. Maybe.
Free speech
There may well come a day when online conversation amongst F1 fans requires nothing more than to speak aloud, as your thoughts are magically transformed into words before your very eyes. Just in case that day ever presents itself we ought be prepared.
The Sidepodcast playground now includes a new speech-to-text page solely for the purposes of testing such witchcraft. You will need the very, very latest version of Google Chome to take it for a spin. If you need a bit of help figuring it all out, Giggles has created a handy guide video just for you.
Free cake
Speaking of Giggles, the man himself was a bit too tired to write today's daily post after spending a day doing manly things, like lifting and carrying and driving a white van round in circles. I am assured this is tiring stuff. In return for shying away from welcoming in Thursday with the rest of us, the man has kindly offered to send cake to the most deserving person of the day - he's lovely like that.
So, if you are a deserving recipient of cake on this fine Thursday, or you know someone who is, let us know in the comments. Giggles will be sending the most deserving individual cake (and he will send it, trust me).
Free falling
There was some F1 news yesterday, and F1 Minute has you covered on that score. Meanwhile Steve Lovell turned the tables on us and interviewed Christine and myself, for a Radio 4 bound dissertation. Do be sure to check out both of those audio shows, there will be questions later.
That'll just about wrap up this free-form daily, I'll shall leave you with the wise, yet badly transcribed, words of Google Chrome:
- how do you in the commons
- rofe you in love comments
- I love you in the cullens
- I'll see you in my comments
Ahh, you know what I'm trying to say.
I just have to say, hearing Mr C try to convince Google what he was actually saying was hilarious. Like talking to a deaf grandma or something.
why won't it listen to me?
"I'll see you in love comet"
ffs.
Google lurves you.
Chrome is in the "terrible twos" stage of life...
I had escaped but I just had to try that

Ohhh, i nominate Lukeh for the free cake.. cause well it's our 2 year anniversary today and he deserves cake for being awesome.
Congrats
happy anniversary loukeh
Congrats to you both.
Happy anniversary, Lukeh and lou :D
Thanks all :)
You're welcome :)
I win, I win!

shorthand?
I have to go to bed but this is fuuun.
alfy's in common
actually maybe Giggles should send Christine the cake cause she owns spc and if spc didn't exist i wouldn't have lukeh... :o
:D
Happy anniversary!
:D
I tried good night Christine and it came out as good night christine
Success
Yay!
Excellent :)
morning all, after 9 hours sleep I feel better than yesterday :)
yaaay! that's great news :)
and I had the best Korean dumplings ever last night. I want mooooore #goodday
And happy anniversary :D
Good morning!
Yum :)
9 hours. What have you done with the real Amy?
yaay even better news!! :)
thank you.
and now i need to sleep, as i'm completely shattered.
Goodnight!
Night Lou

apparently my monthly average is 6.2 hours per night. That seems far too high. Sleeping til 3pm on my days off must have ruined my stats :)
SidepodTravel Update:
I am finalizing a trip to Chile and Argentina this summer. I am really trying to work in a pilgrimage to the Museo Fangio.
If you're going to Argentina you should me Guille. He came to Spa.
Pamela and I wanted to know who wants to do Canada/US with us in 2013. It may be a many years away but put away 20 pound a week for 2 years and bingo, none of this 'its too expensive' excuse :D #nomoreplanning
Wow :O
I am very jealous
Don't worry Amy, the way our economy is going here in the states, I think you would only need to save up for a couple of months.
If I did a US/Canada trip it would have to include an IndyCar race too. It is on my list. Must wait and see what the Olympic draw brings first.
You are planning for 2013? That's ages away. I can't be thinking about quarter past 8 this early
this is what we realised, no one likes planning but then when the event gets close everyone says 'oh i have no money so i can't come'
you can't have it both ways!
The trouble is all the other things between now and then which need buying
thats why the longer notice you have, the smaller the amount you have to set aside so the less you miss it :)
I don't know how to budget. :)
I have 6 bank accounts, I have it down to a fine art.
Apart from the fact I got paid today and already have none left :D
how will i know i'll have time in two years? how will i know if i even like it in two years? fickle people can't plan, nothing to do with money.
well if you don't like it in two years you'll have an extra couple of grand sitting around that you can spend on something more exciting. Like chocolate.
fine, that i can do. if you're asking now though and i change my mind, will you be mad?
of course not. I never expect you to come, thats why I'm going outside so you don't have to :)
brilliant. put me down as a definite then. i'll start saving for
canadachocolate.i'm loathe to suggest you write more blog posts, but a 10-step saving plan, plus, say quarterly updates might encourage more to go.
blogging, nooooo. I'll think about it :)
So what are you two planning to do in America?
Sleeptime. Boring old stocktake in the afternoon. Possible beer out somewhere in the evening. Have a good day..
Goodnight!
I'm not planning anything yet! I want to do the two races which will hopefully be back to back, other than that, lord knows :)
on the plus side... mileage allowance :D
Night Pat
Watch game seven, start of third period. Habs - 2, Bruins - 2
Love watching a game when two teams hate each other.
3-3 going into overtime.
Reason #265,834 why I love Hockey: Don Cherry.
He is famous for wearing outlandish suits. Tonight is no different.
Bruins WIN! Canadians go down.

Morning.
6?? I'd love to know how you divvy those up!
Morning guys :)
Morning everyone, Its yas ticket buying day
Im going for the west stand where the DRS zone should be,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circuit_Yas-Island.svg
But do i go for the bit which looks over the straight and down the grid straight, or go for the bit 90 degrees from that looking down the long drs straight?
Free Cake.
I would like to think I deserve a free cake, simply because I would love to see someone try to ship a cake half way around the world.
Having said that, I have already had my birthday cake this year, so someone else probably deserves it more.
I don't want to be at work! Nice and quiet though, wonder where everyone is, the last two days were hectic
I'm simultaneously getting fed with and a little bit into the wedding stuff.
Well, this really:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/rorycellanjones/2011/04/digital_wedding_or_rw2011.html
Bigger live web event than Obama's inauguration?
Official hashtag: #rw2011
*fed up
Lots of small amounts? Must take ages to save anything. I need a diagram.
Happy anniversary Lou and Lukeh!
Happy Pay It Forward Day! Don't forget to do something nice for a stranger today (eg. pay for the person behind you's coffee or buy a sandwich for a busker - having lived with enough starving musicians, I know they really appreciate free food)
Urgh. First uninterrupted morning in an internet cafe in two months and Dad locks himself out his car so needs me to go home and bring his spare key. See y'all in 30mins.
I have a chequeing account, a bills account and a savings account.
COTD from that article:
I have 5, but only really use 3 day to day.
USD, GBP and one for trading
I'm really impressed that whilst there has been coverage, the proper mania has only started in the last couple of days. It could have been a lot worse :)
I'm not particularly interested but i'll probably have it on because I don't remember seeing a royal wedding before plus someone put a Tv in the office.
:D
Oh fun
It's all over the media here too!!!
I have a current account, a savings a/c and two credit cards..
The Mrs. has a credit card but that gets paid by the bills account.
Yeah it could easily have been wall to wall for weeks. I'm sure if you read the papers or watch certain TV stations it has been like that but I'm glad it has been possible to avoid it.
No day off?
It's worse here!
I really haven't seen much coverage at all, not as much as I expected.
I am currently watching the "movie" they made about how they met, but I'm only watching it because I read it was awful and awful movies are my favourite kind :D (it really is awful and I'm only 10 minutes in :) )
Aww pic of kiddy Lewis here: http://twitpic.com/4q9n07
I have my everyday spending account, my credit card, a bills account, a travel account, a short term savings account and a long term savings account :D
Awesomes.
travel account is quite depleted at the moment, thankfully Singapore is still 5 months away :)
Erm... every day is a day off at the moment ;)
Yea, I think that one is probably going to be toooo awful for me!
oh no she already has a boyfriend, how on earth will they end up together!
What I meant was, in the olden days, before someone brought a TV into our lives, I probably wouldn't have sought out the wedding via the iPlayer and taken up valuable screen space. But now there's a TV just sitting there, I might as well put it on as I go about my day :)
I like the threat.. follow me or more pics of you as a kid.. :)
thats the worst Prince Charles I've ever seen.
Plus William appears to be a New Zealander.
Oh so the telly is in an office at home...
Yea, I timed my break really badly because the one year we are granted an extra bank holiday and I can't take advantage of it.
Sounds complex. I keep working to a plan:
- pay off credit cards
- then divert card payment money into savings account
- holiday!
But when I do step one expensive things keep happening, repeat process.. Hopefully having moved twice in 2 years I won't have to again for a while.
Ah yes, same plan here
the amount that goes into my 3 savings accounts is all done via automatic payment, anything expensive that goes on my credit card can normally be covered out of my short-term savings, thats where I buy things like iPads from :) I've only ever put stuff on my credit card I can pay off straight away.
I exempt myself from Free Cake as I have just been given some :)
I'm at work... but even though I don't want to watch it I will be keeping an eye on it out of curiousity I reckon.
oh no, Trevor is dumping her. This movie rules.
Me too, as I had some yesterday.
She was too good for him anyway ;)
The Guardian called this "so bad it's awful, toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly" haha.
Turns out the fake prince is a cousin of the Evers Swindell twins. NZ is so small.
He kinda looks like them. Are they still rowing BTW?
I think they retired after the last Olympics to start families
oooh, go my memory http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/665642
f1 kindle stuff for christine: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/moving-with-the-game/
ooh only $4.99. Cheap as chips :D
Oooh!
Oops, that went a bit wrong!
Nick: 28/04/2011 at 10:20:14
The lady in the etihad office remembered I bought f1 tickets last year, and my name!
Scary lady!
ooh their eyes have met over a bag of garbage.
I can't help but live comment this :D
Cheers.
they went from just friends to him meeting her parents in about 20 seconds. My mother has never curtseyed when she met any of my boyfriends.

yo folks
Jenson wants to retire at McLaren: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90961
wonder if he'll ever get another shot at being champion though?
you can't get that lucky, twice :)
So how is everyone today?
oh Jenson, you of all people shouldn't talk about staying with teams
Schumi got lucky 7 times :-P
Planning his retirement already?
Leigh, what url should I use at the moment if linking to your site?
it's okay, found it off your twitter account
Sweet

wish they wouldn't use the promoted #RoyalWedding hashtag
Andrew Benson's written a good article about the arguments for and against the new engine rules: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2011/04/power_play_over_new_f1_rules.html
#bbcwedding is the one that bugs me. BBC, you ain't the ones getting married.
Makes more sense than the 'official' #rw2011
You never know - maybe BBC 1 and BBC 2 are eloping?
Brillant Billy & Cate's wedding
Ehhhhh....
about time too, I've not been happy since they spawned CBeebies out of wedlock
More Olympics stuff from @Pearcesport
London 2012 say they received 20 million applications for tickets from 1.8 million people. More than 1/2 sessions have been oversubscribed
London 2012 Opening Ceremony is more than 10 times oversubscribed.
Shhhhhh... ITV and Ch 4 are beginning to talk....
That has to be the most bizzare sponsored trend i have ever seen
Absoloutly zero connections!
Saw this yesterday from the Grauniad: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/apr/26/olympic-ticket-sales-surge-deadline?CMP=twt_gu
I don't know, Kate's weight has been an obsession for some papers
I saw a few people tweeting him whining about the broken website and how they couldn't buy tickets. Um, you had 2 months to do it.
Ethiads booking system is broken, i have to go back later :(
you buying some flights?
F1 tickets!
They have the best system, everywhere else you choose a block, if you book with them you can reserve specific seats
talking of hashtags, i love this idea: http://media.twitter.com/1479/more-tv-hashtags
ah I didn't realise airlines sold F1 tickets :D
reserving specific seats is always nice, we did that for Melbourne and Malaysia but Singapore is one of those 'choose a block' ones so for the second year in a row I'm in the front row.
It is the "2011 Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix" ;)
I have found two appropriate Korean hotels, I wonder how late F1 people wait before they book things :D
we had a Qantas Grand Prix, couldn't buy tickets from Qantas :D
I wouldnt mind it flashing up, after adbreaks or something, to have it persistently there seems a bit of overkill
Bear in mind last year, many didn't know if that GP was happening until a very short time beforehand
Well they at least know there is a track there this year...
even for other races I quite often see people tweeting about how they're booking flights and hotels and things and I go 'really? this late?' but maybe they'll all be smart and get in early for Korea this time :)
They missed a trick there!
We dont really do online comerrce here that much, a bit in the way of tickets but not much.
Most tickets for gigs are done though Virgin Megastores, so you can buy these there, online or at etihad
true
Are they 'Lovely' ? :)
no. which is why they're appropriate :)
boo... missing out the cultural experience!
I had Korean for dinner last night!
Hmmm... when I want to buy a Marlboro car, I can't find it. When I want to buy a Vodaphone car, I can't find it anywhere.
When I go to buy a Lotus, it's greenish/brown with someguy called "Genii" on the side. It's clearly the wrong one.
The BBC often put it up at the beginning of a programme and perhaps if they are talking about the feedback they've received as well.
Boo to more screen clutter. Have it appear at the start of the show then go away and let me watch the telly.
You could do some clever intergration, putting a hashtag up on a billboard in the background of a show, then when people search for it have a conversation pre-started on twitter?
Homefront the game was quite clever like that, there were QR codes sprayed on walls with graffiti, using my phone i could take a picture and see flash back videos of what had happened before
Boo to having to buy Olympic tickets via Visa!
Jimmy Fallon had a sketch where he had a dancer in the background holding up a big sign with a QR code on it :)
Something for the summer
turns out in Australia they'd accept anything but Visa was "preferred"
Of the countries that www.cosport.com serviced only the USA had to use Visa. Was it compulsory in the UK too?
Bit of Beige from Benson http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2011/04/power_play_over_new_f1_rules.html
I don't like the top one but the second ones don't seem that intrusive. I could live with that :)
It was "proudly" compulsory for online payments
in the future, it doesn't seem a big deal to be able to hide it yourself, something akin to the red button
That would be ideal.
ahh thats not good for people who'd have to go out of their way to get one. My credit card is Visa and my debit card is Mastercard so I can always do either.
is it just me or does the UK seem to be switching to Visa? all my mastercards converted to visa
Are you with Natwest?
I just linked to that?
Afternoon everyone :)
Hope everyone is having a lovely day :)
hi alex
I am. How manly are you today?
ARGGGHHH!
Dont you get to choose? they gave the option of either, i took visa because my credit card was master card
Actually I just was running around saying "Gouda" in a dutch accent and waving my arms around and then accidentally hit my arm into a chair and hurt myself.
So more like a normal day :)
?
Not me.. Debit always been Visa, cards always MasterCard, no idea why
Welcome to Katherine's world :)
Hehe!
Ping: F3/GT at Oulton Park
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/OP_port.jpg
Maestro is Mastercard's debit card which is somewhat confusing because Visa just call everything Visa
Great idea for Friday fun I reckon: http://twitter.com/#!/JRobertsF1/status/63549588409298945
mine keep changing to Visa only, which not a problem as Mastecard didn't sponsor the olympics
That's just a link to one of the photo's

I just tried to show Katherine the speech to text feature on Sidepodcast and said, "Hello Katherine" and it said "Hello tavern".
Beer o'clock for Sidepodcast
this copying and pasting thing is not straightforward, no wonder GMM get it wrong so often
Hannibal Patch-Longue!
:D
I think you are supposed to add Lord or Lady too at the front for the full impact... But that one is awesome!
Mine would be Lord Douglas Rocket-Claremont
I have to go and do some counting now, see you later.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
I have to go and do some counting now, see you later.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
(this may appear twice)
Katherine's would be Lady Violet Idi-Snowdon
I can never do these things because I've never had a pet :( If I steal the only pet an immediate relative has ever had (my nana had a bird to keep her company) I'd be Dorothy Frederick-Highcliff :)
I hope you take stock of the situation
So mine is Lord Hannibal Patch-Longue (and it's pronounced Long-gay BTW)...
I've no idea why this happens
My first and only pet was called Sharky (along with George), neither of which are particularly ladylike.
Happy Anniversary to Lukeh and Lou or Lou and Lukeh
One!
Two!
Loukeh!
i'm putting the pet name first for added bling-ness
Prince Carl-Braddon
:)
I'm not sure Frederick is ladylike. Turns out that bird was a girl anyway but we didn't know until it started laying eggs.
That's a good indication that you've guessed wrong :)
Hehehe. Did it become Fredericka?
Well it's impolite to ask isn'tit?
There's a town in Denmark called Fredericia, but that was named after one of the many King Frederiks (the king is alternately christened Frederik or Kristian)...
oddly not :D The only thing she taught it to say was "where's Amy?" #favouritegrandchild
My parents were quite happy when the bird died because they were concerned they'd end up looking after it :)
Right folks,
I must disappear for a while - have fun
:)
Sweet Jeebus... GMM are using Bunte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunte) as a source now: http://www.yallaf1.com/2011/04/28/schumacher-i-will-fulfil-my-three-year-contract/
later!
So are all us UK people looking forward to a day off to celebrate my 4th Anniversary on Sidepodcast?*
*Not my fourth anniversary of course my third anniversary, my 4 year anniversary. I arrived in 2007 is what I'm trying to say ;)
:D
You would think the papers could have found a column inch or two for that.
He was in Hello magazine once you know!
It's crazy making!
The queen has actually had to come up with an excuse to get it through parliament! Apparently she's got some people to get married as cover ;)
I have just gone and found my original comment and I love how wonderfully wrong Mr C and I turned out to be :) Just goes to show that when it comes to predictions...
http://sidepodcast.com/post/button-to-red-bull-racing
i have come to the shops in a winter coat that is way inappropriate considering it's quite a nice evening. It's hiding the fact I'm wearing pajamas.
he he :)

What a different world that was. Fascinating.
well at least he got the bit about red bull going to the top right :)
Indeed.
That was only 4 years ago... I think sometimes it's hard for people to remember quite how much the little stuff in F1 doesn't really matter for that long. Stuff that seemed really important at one point is gone completely in a really short time.
Better than that:
All true
Pretty good there.
well really, nobody saw that coming anyway!
Sometimes it by the time you get to the letters GMM tagged on the end
That's what happens between races - bickering over small stuff. The history books forget it in a hurry though!
Button at McLaren is the only thing better than that outcome.
Sure RB are quicker (mostly), they just aren't McLaren are they?
things i totally didn't see coming: todt leaving, ron leaving and flavio leaving. for some reason i expected them to be there forever, yet the only team boss to retain their role after four years of sidepodcast is frank williams. even berger left STR in that period.
spyker, aguri, honda, toyota and bmw all left the sport before their team bosses could.
I miss Ron....
Hello all btw, rude of me just to saunter in like that...
Best way, I reckon :)
I really thought Ron would be there forever. Even when he was gone he was still there for a while, but not anymore.
He's buried in the car project now isn't he?
i thought ron had been to each race this year for the first time in a while
He's one of the only people in F1 left that still gives me butterflies when I see him in person :)
Oh. I haven't seen him :(
Just reading BadgerGP's POP: http://badgergp.com/2011/04/pop-the-good-week-bad-week-of-f1-4/
Two things:
1. Didn't know Prince William had visited an F1 team
2. Jake Humphrey is presenting the BBC Coverage tomorrow?
Yeah, he's been there this year, its great to see him around again :)
I think since Mosley is gone, he'll be around more
I need to start paying more attention.
One of many. Not sure why!
I guess most of the people who do 'live events' are in the sport department
he's a correspondant, the actual host is Huw someone that I've never heard of but I assume British people know :D
arrive. lob hand grenade. run.
He needs to speak more though....
I think Peter windsor is doing a good job with his show and people are too harsh on him for the USF1 stuff.
Have a good afternoon everyone!
Bye! :D
:)
I handed out this Royal Wedding colouring in page at work today. No one appreciated it :D
Mainly because they had no coloured pencils or felt tip pens.
i'm sure you do ;)
I see.
Huw Edwards.
I don't know about every race... I am sure I have seen him at 2 though. Maybe I just filled in the blanks. He handed the humble pie to EJ in Australia
yes that chap. I Wikipediaed him, now it makes sense that he's hosting.
I just downloaded the official programme on iBooks. I've never used iBooks before!
With a name like that he has to be the royal correspondent. Where's his other surname?
He's Welsh like you ;)
I think Mrs. Goat wants an e-reader, now I told her Mills & Boon are on there!
am kinda confused why people are confused that jake is covering the wedding, i'd be surprised if he wasn't. the man is destined for much bigger things than f1.
i likes spinning the shelf :)
I thought he wanted to do sport.
I figured with a name like Huw he must be Welsh. Welsh names are crazy.
surely not Don't Scare The Hare???
He isn't actually... The BBC are using this as a test bed for a whole new generation of people and Huw is pretty old. But the problem is that for all the main royal things you usually get a Dimbleby and they are getting on a bit. And the good thing is that this isn't a funeral so it's less of a problem if something goes wrong.
but what do the bbc want him to do?
A friend of mine used to be an editor for them
Like Amy ;)
she can read Nascar romances!
Dunno. I like my sports people to do sports.
Then again, I'm just glad it's not Tess Daly.
My grandads name was Marks! It's like Mark only plural! Why would you pluralise a name?
My uncles middle name is Marks but my cousins name is Mark. None of that extra s business for us Kiwi folk :D
Bleurgh!
Will he be allowed to take the iPad?
heeh
Got to do a wedding and not allowed to take an iPad? I'd quit :)
Are Ant and Dec hosting ITV's coverage?
it's not an iPad, its a BBC branded tablet. #thankslukeh
Will it have a royal cover? Like a silver designer one or something? Will he be reading out tweets?
It does seem odd but if it advances his career a bit then it's a good thing.
The official programme says that they're both going to say "I will"
Thats a bit presumptuous, what if one of them decides not to?
heh :)
One of them is already called Will!
shouldn't one them say "I kate"?
Cor, imagine being left at the altar in front of millions of people.
What's the difference between that and "I do"?
In the UK we say I will
generally
oooh I didn't know that.
:) :) :)
it's the phrasing of the question... "Do you Katherine take..." sounds archaic
The difference between 'do you take' and 'will you take'
Proceeds of the sale of the programme go to the foundation of prince william and prince harry. Maybe they should have thought that through before they gave it away for free digitally :)
I can confirm there will be not much wedding and an awful lot of singing and hymns :)
billions!
that sounds like a wedding
Argh!
#theonegoodthingaboutthecruise ;)
ooh it won't be mine. All my grandparents banned hymns from their funerals too.
no music at all?
nooo, we went on the bridge-thing too.
there was music, but nothing religious.
Presumably everyone has seen this by now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kav0FEhtLug
:)
The bridge thing, and the free champagne at dinner. That's about it :)
And now you can add no billion people watching ;)
actually, the best thing about our wedding was that i didn't have to do any organising. not sure you can relate to that though :)
7 years of being engaged and we still haven't organised a wedding :)
You have been engaged for the same amount of time that I have been married!
there's always more pressing concerns. google keep releasing stuff, and then there's those new typefaces to check out. it's a miracle anything ever gets done really.
I have been to two weddings of the same person in the time we've been engaged!
There needs to be some kind of online button you can just push and it be done.
to be clear different other person each time
sending cake to people... which reminds me... who is the decider Mr or Mrs C? And when is the deadline?
well they could have done an Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton...
Indeed.
erm, some point today i think. have there been any deserving nominees?
the longest engagement amongst people I know (that actually ended in marriage) was 22 years, so you've got a long way to go :)
Yay typefaces!!
From what I can understand some people removed themselves because they had recently had cake. Lou suggested Lukeh because it was their anniversary which is good because it wasn't self serving. And Paul suggested himself because he wanted to see if I could get a cake to the other side of the world but mentioned he had recently had cake
Lou also suggested Christine because Christine made Sidepodcast which meant she got to meet Lukeh.
Maybe given the special circumstances Lukeh and Lou should get cake?
I have not had cake or a hot cross bun this year! and half way round the world is a good test for the big one! :)
oooh, yes!
I think that's a good idea.
Good idea, you could send them a half each! :D
I vote for this.
I'll have to keep my half way around the world powder dry... But unless another idea comes that sounds like a good plan. I already have Lukeh's address but I don't have Lou's... So if somebody see's Lou around then can you ask her to send me her address [email protected] or dm or whatever :)
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/on-this-day-28th-april-2006-damon-hill-becomes-president-of-the-brdc
I know her home address but not her uni one :)
hadn't realised how much better firefox4 and ie9 make text on windows look.
Lou the Photographer

UCI Farnham
:)
I agree. But they must have a pic of it!
Well they had to do something to fix it....
Ahh Macs :)
:D Ha!
Ooooh. Yes! :)
Definitely! Besides, today is Pay It Forward day, so we should all be doing good things for others; (I picked my dad's car lock because he locked his keys in his car and the spare didn't work. I feel very Roz Myers today) it'll come back in good ways :)
and we'll all be the poorer for it.
that said, I agree with Christine. i'm not exactly sure how this fits into Jake's future as the face of BBC Sport. unless he ends up being the face of the entire BBC?
we, the non-British F1 fans, I mean. :D
I can see that happening at this rate of knots...
The cake is a lie.
afternoon everyone
Jake is also doing the Olympics I believe. He will be the new Des Lynam / Steve Ryder. If he stays on after the first term of the BBC's F1 contract finishes, I'll be surprised.
Lots of the sports people are covering it. for example the TMS cricket commentators are working on the radio commentary
Is Pat around?
I think he is stocktaking today.
Ahhh, I see
Yup - that I know. And that makes sense. Sport guy covers sport event.
Ah, I get it now.
Cost-cutting.
WHAT?! and WHAT?! again.
Well, it won't hurt Superleague.
:D
Hey there everyone
Ello David, Leigh, everyone. ;)
Not really. It's just the BBC has a policy of having BBC comentators, as opposed to BBC F1 commentators.
It's like Crofty - he was a darts man who got drafted into F1, but he would come under the banner of BBC Sport
Hi Journeyer, David
:)
Indeed. But again, that makes sense - it's still sport. But I find it odd to ask a guy covering sport to cover a royal wedding.
I'm currently doing Indy Lights notes for Barber & Long Beach - I swear some of these guys shouldn't be allowed near racing cars...
Surely the Royal Wedding is a sport too?
;)
However I'm very excited about Conor Daly. Could be America's future.
Heh. :P
Still not convinced by him. He's never driven a series with good competition
What are the odds he ends up in NASCAR, though?
Not on the horizon at all , apparently
Really? Where does he want to go?
Gunning for F1. He's also doing GP3 this year
GP3 should be a good indicator. With regard to NASCAR, he is so dedicated to finding a Formula 1 drive at some point that he is bypassing all the oval events in Indy lights to sell out to GP3. In fact he missed a Long Beach practice session because of practicing for GP3 and having a late flight from Spain.
Sounds like Scott Speed: The Sequel. That said, if he really wants to make it to F1, I don't see how he can do it without living in Europe. Those trans-Atlantic flights will take it out of him.
Who's backing him, by the way?
even the F1 photographers are getting in on the action. Clive Mason tweets: Eyeing my bed for the last time for 48 hours, tomorrow night to be spent in a bag on the floor on The Mall..think I should stick to sport!!
I hope they're paying him well to stay there overnight just to get a good spot!
...which may end up doing more harm than good. Pick a junior formula and stick to it. Hard to tell with GP3 so far; his test times have been OK, but not spectacular, but it's only testing...
His Dad at the minute I believe. Not sure about other backers
I remember Richard Quest of CNN telling a very similar story when he was covering Charles and Diana back in the day. Part and parcel of a Royal Wedding, from the looks of it.
Is his Dad... John Daly?
It doesn't help that they're at least 4 timezones apart, either - and in this case, it's 9 timezones apart.
I have another running ping and now I am off for sleepies. http://amysrunning.posterous.com/week-6-day-2
derek daly, former-F1 driver
Nah. Maybe Derek Daly. :D
Showing my age there... :|
His father certainly has the right pedigree. Derek Daly was a consistent Formula 1 and Indycar driver during the late 70's and 80's.
Phew.
it IS Derek Daly?! Holy shmokes!
Wasn't he Keke's teammate the year he won the title? Good on him.
Wait, so Conor Daly is racing with an American license. Interesting decision, that.
Conor is the only American and youngest competitor ever to have won the Walter Hayes trophy.
Yep. He's a management coach now. He does lots of seminars around the US for businesses.
Because Conor is American
True. But he's like the American version of Nico Rosberg. He could've raced with either license, really.
True, but that matters little in the higher formulae
It still means no other American has ever done it.
True, but no one really cares where the driver comes from. Whether they're good enough for the rest of the ladder is what matters.
I'd say it's a good marker of potential, but it means nothing if it doesn't show up in the timesheets.
Good point.
The states want to have a great driver to back in open wheel racing. We don't have one right now. The top 20% of Indycar don't have an American in it. The names might be recognizable but until their is true national pride behind a driver the sport won't reach its peak.
True and it'd be great if Daly does make it, but right now, Alexander Rossi is a better possibility and he has an F1 team behind him.
It's a tricky issue, really. IndyCar is somewhat stuck in the middle of NASCAR and F1. It has a hard time attracting the best drivers in the world, because it's neither the top American motorsport (that's NASCAR) or the top open-seater motorsport (that's F1).
It's a chicken-egg proposition. IndyCar won't attract top talent unless it becomes truly top-level motorsport (either in an American or open-seater sense). And it won't become top-level motorsport unless it attracts top talent.
His progress seems to have slowed down a bit, though.
He made a mis-step and lost a year because of it, but is back in a better series now. A move to GP2 Asia was too soon, while a year in GP3 was a waste of time.
What series is he in at the moment?
World Series by Renault
Bernie WHAT?
Ecclestone keen to give Bahrain more time
From the man himself:
“I suppose we'd be safe by early June or something like that. Things can change in a couple of weeks ... so you don't know. All of a sudden everything might be peaceful in a month's time and they are happy to run the event and so we are happy to be there.”
I know he's good friends with the al-Khalifas, and they hosted a memorable 60th anniversary event (even if the race was atrocious). But really - waiting until June? At this rate, we'll wait until September before someone decides.
Also, it never gets suddenly peaceful. It usually gets suddenly violent...
Yep... exactly...
He wants to get paid, i guess everything this year was structured around the revenue and broadcast for 20 races?
*facepalm*
So we're still working around the premise that the Bahrainis have to decide? I thought they already decided to cancel it last time? Doesn't that mean Bernie gets paid anyway?
They announced it, dont know if they decided to actuly postpone it.
There is probably a clause saying they wont have to pay if its force majore
True, but I'm not sure anti-government protests are "an act of God", so to speak.
I think political unrest is usualy included as it is (theoretically and usualy) beond each party's control (the contract is likely with a business entity, not the governement itself)
It's very disappointing that Bernie's willing to do anything and everything to get this race back, considering everything that's happened there.
Then again, he's the squillionaire, not me.
I agree. Does anyone actually want this race to happen?
WHAT?
ffs.
i guess he's using this a threat for something else entirely unrelated. there is no way in the world f1 can hold a race in bahrain this year, the next or even the one after that.
very true.
Hi, Greetings from Boston.
Making a quick in & out here, just surveyed this thread.
My take: Unlike, say, Belgium, Bahrain is a VERY deep pocket, and Bernie will go to great lengths to keep his hooks in it. For example, hold a former-world-champions-reunion in there where there's zero motorsports heritage instead of say Spa or Monza.
:D
#Indycar
Race is in Brazil this weekend - apparently, it is raining heavily at the moment, with more rain expected over the course of the weekend.

Eurovision ping... http://northernwaffler.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/eurovision-sofa-the-songs-a-to-d/
A Dutch football club has signed an 18 month old toddler. I wonder how long before a racing team signs a driver that young
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/world-of-sport/article/45106/
In all fairness, they did state it was a publicity stunt. The grandfather played for them or something like that
Anyhoo folks,
I'm off - see you all in a bit
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/04/28/adobes-subscription-model-could-revolutionise-the-creative-process/
43 seems like an awful lot. How many in the final event?
25.
Phew!
I'm going to tell a story. It may be one of those "you had to be there" things but it will amuse us when we look back in years to come.
So, Mr C asked me to tweak the volumes on the latest episode of Sidepodchat, which I did. I uploaded the file and said:
"Mr C, when you've got a second, please check the chat."
"Chat?" he asked, thinking I meant realtime.
I clarified what I meant. He nodded. I stood up to get a drink.
"Don't forget to check the chat," I said on the way out.
"Chat?" he asked, in exactly the same tone of voice as before.
He had forgotten the entire conversation in the time it took me to stand up and cross the room.
We have reached a new low.
Do you ever get the impression he is just not listening?
XD hehehehehehehe!!!
Hehehe, quite often :)
Have you tried rebooting him?
Updating all drivers?
Defragmenting?
This is the one that might work, I think.
it's funny cause it's not overly surprising. <3 mr c.
It was a proper blank face too. I laughed quite a lot.
XD hehe i can imagine! :)
Sounds more like you need to archive some of the stuff rattling round his brain and get more RAM installed so he doesn't immediately forget stuff
External hard drive, maybe?
Lukeh is watching a documentary on a famous man u footballer.. the only thing i like so far is the fact it's narrated by Bill Nighy.
Am using this time to edit even more photos :(
Would he remember to take it with him?
It's the Bobby Charlton thing. I forgot about that. Must have got the virus from Mr C.
iplayer to the rescue
Oooh, good point. If only I could get to the startup thing to choose what happens on starting up.
apparently it's very good.
Should be. His life story is incredible. I just hope there are fewer errors than the Man Utd thing with David Tennant a few days ago
i tried to watch that.. but i couldn't so i watched a programme on the invention of penicillin instead.
#muchmoreme
it's not fair, she said 'chat', but chat doesn't normally mean 'listen to the audio podcast.
*meanies*
I think it would have been difficult to follow if you don't know the stoy
Probably because I think its an actual documentary there won't be.
Plus he's from Ashington and therefore awesome.
(lukeh) i emphasise for your moment mr c :)
Hehehe!
awww, hilarious though :)
*flounts*
The youngest signing by an F1 team at the moment is 11 (a Canadian karter in Ferrari's driver development programme). Not heard of anyone driving a kart at below age 3, but even that's scarily young to be committed to a particular team.
:D
What was it that Christine said about Mr C? I've forgotten ;)
:)
*collapse*
Good evening. :)
Good evening!
That's fantastic
or flounce, whichever.. ;)
So I took stock of everything as Alex suggested. Then did some driving and watched a show I'd never heard of called 'Burn Notice' at my mates place, alongside a hefty Chinese meal. Then more driving and home again.
Picked some Coca-Cola on the way back (and some beer). Coke was to wake me up to drive home (lots of food and lots of counting = zzz). I fancied getting the glass bottles because I still think they are a novelty after they vanished for a long while. No bottle opener. Drive another 30mins home without caffiene or sugar.
Mmm, chinese food.
bah!!
Pork in a hot and spicy sauce alongside some noodles which had been done sort of chow mein style. Big plateful. :)
I feel very itchy!! I know it's all in my head but I can't make it stop.
i missed what alex suggested?
Is there anything you won't share with us?
#justcurious
Just a heads up, I have changed the fonts again, hopefully for a) a final time and b) for the better: http://mrschristine.com/
It's a big issue!! :D
final time ever? what no more geeking out on fonts?
http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-28th-april-2011/comments#comment-1079948
no thanks, i have no change sorry
heeh!
Then I can only suggest a doctor.
I have a question for Mr C. The Cardiff gig, you said there was an extra ticket... is it still available or has it found a home?
ooh, i'll mail you. 1 sec.
Okay ta. No worries if it has gone.
Oh I like the title font.
What's with the blobs* with faces?
* muscle memory, I typed 'blogs' first
I'm not comment trawling the whole thread but I just have to say, I really don't like him doing 'events' after he completely ruined the Olympic ceremonies in Beijing by constantly telling us what was about to happen.
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/04/28/fun-and-games-with-typekit/
Oh dear. He will definitely have the potential for doing that tomorrow as well.
"Do you take this man?"
--She is going to say yes---
:) :) :)
And then look astonished when she says "I Kate" instead...
:)
:)
It occurred to me earlier after posting the thing about being a big social media occasion... Twitter's going to collapse isn't it
yup :)
New daily ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-29th-april-2011
