Google updated their Chrome web browser on Wednesday including a long awaited feature (by myself at least) that converts the spoken word into text. This one fantastic feature might just revolutionise the conversation on Sidepodcast. Maybe.

Free speech

There may well come a day when online conversation amongst F1 fans requires nothing more than to speak aloud, as your thoughts are magically transformed into words before your very eyes. Just in case that day ever presents itself we ought be prepared.

The Sidepodcast playground now includes a new speech-to-text page solely for the purposes of testing such witchcraft. You will need the very, very latest version of Google Chome to take it for a spin. If you need a bit of help figuring it all out, Giggles has created a handy guide video just for you.

Free cake

Speaking of Giggles, the man himself was a bit too tired to write today's daily post after spending a day doing manly things, like lifting and carrying and driving a white van round in circles. I am assured this is tiring stuff. In return for shying away from welcoming in Thursday with the rest of us, the man has kindly offered to send cake to the most deserving person of the day - he's lovely like that.

So, if you are a deserving recipient of cake on this fine Thursday, or you know someone who is, let us know in the comments. Giggles will be sending the most deserving individual cake (and he will send it, trust me).

Free falling

There was some F1 news yesterday, and F1 Minute has you covered on that score. Meanwhile Steve Lovell turned the tables on us and interviewed Christine and myself, for a Radio 4 bound dissertation. Do be sure to check out both of those audio shows, there will be questions later.

That'll just about wrap up this free-form daily, I'll shall leave you with the wise, yet badly transcribed, words of Google Chrome:

  • how do you in the commons
  • rofe you in love comments
  • I love you in the cullens
  • I'll see you in my comments

Ahh, you know what I'm trying to say.

I just have to say, hearing Mr C try to convince Google what he was actually saying was hilarious. Like talking to a deaf grandma or something.

    Free Cake.

I would like to think I deserve a free cake, simply because I would love to see someone try to ship a cake half way around the world.

Having said that, I have already had my birthday cake this year, so someone else probably deserves it more.

Yea, I timed my break really badly because the one year we are granted an extra bank holiday and I can't take advantage of it.

  • Pat W28/04/2011 at 09:10

I have my everyday spending account, my credit card, a bills account, a travel account, a short term savings account and a long term savings account :D

Sounds complex. I keep working to a plan:

    - pay off credit cards

    - then divert card payment money into savings account

    - holiday!

But when I do step one expensive things keep happening, repeat process.. Hopefully having moved twice in 2 years I won't have to again for a while.

  • Pat W28/04/2011 at 09:12

    Ah yes, same plan here

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 09:12

Sounds complex. I keep working to a plan:

the amount that goes into my 3 savings accounts is all done via automatic payment, anything expensive that goes on my credit card can normally be covered out of my short-term savings, thats where I buy things like iPads from :) I've only ever put stuff on my credit card I can pay off straight away.

    F1 tickets!

They have the best system, everywhere else you choose a block, if you book with them you can reserve specific seats

    F1 tickets!

    ah I didn't realise airlines sold F1 tickets :D

They have the best system, everywhere else you choose a block, if you book with them you can reserve specific seats

reserving specific seats is always nice, we did that for Melbourne and Malaysia but Singapore is one of those 'choose a block' ones so for the second year in a row I'm in the front row.

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 10:54

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 10:57

Bear in mind last year, many didn't know if that GP was happening until a very short time beforehand

even for other races I quite often see people tweeting about how they're booking flights and hotels and things and I go 'really? this late?' but maybe they'll all be smart and get in early for Korea this time :)

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 10:57

we had a Qantas Grand Prix, couldn't buy tickets from Qantas :D

    They missed a trick there!

We dont really do online comerrce here that much, a bit in the way of tickets but not much.

Most tickets for gigs are done though Virgin Megastores, so you can buy these there, online or at etihad

You could do some clever intergration, putting a hashtag up on a billboard in the background of a show, then when people search for it have a conversation pre-started on twitter?

Homefront the game was quite clever like that, there were QR codes sprayed on walls with graffiti, using my phone i could take a picture and see flash back videos of what had happened before

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 11:02

we had a Qantas Grand Prix, couldn't buy tickets from Qantas :D

Boo to having to buy Olympic tickets via Visa!

turns out in Australia they'd accept anything but Visa was "preferred"

Of the countries that www.cosport.com serviced only the USA had to use Visa. Was it compulsory in the UK too?

Sweet Jeebus... GMM are using Bunte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunte) as a source now: http://www.yallaf1.com/2011/04/28/schumacher-i-will-fulfil-my-three-year-contract/

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 11:35

I must disappear for a while - have fun

    later!

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 11:38

So are all us UK people looking forward to a day off to celebrate my 4th Anniversary on Sidepodcast?*

*Not my fourth anniversary of course my third anniversary, my 4 year anniversary. I arrived in 2007 is what I'm trying to say ;)

You would think the papers could have found a column inch or two for that.

He was in Hello magazine once you know!

    It's crazy making!

The queen has actually had to come up with an excuse to get it through parliament! Apparently she's got some people to get married as cover ;)

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 11:43

I have just gone and found my original comment and I love how wonderfully wrong Mr C and I turned out to be :) Just goes to show that when it comes to predictions...

i have come to the shops in a winter coat that is way inappropriate considering it's quite a nice evening. It's hiding the fact I'm wearing pajamas.

What a different world that was. Fascinating.

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 11:53

well at least he got the bit about red bull going to the top right :)

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 11:53

    Indeed.

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 11:54

What a different world that was. Fascinating.

That was only 4 years ago... I think sometimes it's hard for people to remember quite how much the little stuff in F1 doesn't really matter for that long. Stuff that seemed really important at one point is gone completely in a really short time.

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 11:55

well at least he got the bit about red bull going to the top right :)

    Better than that:

B desperately needs to move forward, so Spyker, Toro Rosso and Aguri won't take him to the front. Williams are on the way up, but without the big backers they're not a long term bet. Toyota have the budget but seemingly not the desire.

    All true

Renault's big cheese only has a short term, must-win, outlook and the team are struggling at the moment. They'll catch up soon no doubt, but Jenson has previous with this team and it's a long shot.

    Pretty good there.

Team Macca can be discounted as they already have a long term love affair with one Brit,

well really, nobody saw that coming anyway!

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 11:55

Stuff that seemed really important at one point is gone completely in a really short time.

That's what happens between races - bickering over small stuff. The history books forget it in a hurry though!

  • Matt G28/04/2011 at 11:59

Button at McLaren is the only thing better than that outcome.

Sure RB are quicker (mostly), they just aren't McLaren are they?

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 12:01

What a different world that was. Fascinating.

things i totally didn't see coming: todt leaving, ron leaving and flavio leaving. for some reason i expected them to be there forever, yet the only team boss to retain their role after four years of sidepodcast is frank williams. even berger left STR in that period.

spyker, aguri, honda, toyota and bmw all left the sport before their team bosses could.

  • Matt G28/04/2011 at 12:03

    I miss Ron....

  • Matt G28/04/2011 at 12:06

I really thought Ron would be there forever. Even when he was gone he was still there for a while, but not anymore.

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 12:11

He's one of the only people in F1 left that still gives me butterflies when I see him in person :)

    Just reading BadgerGP's POP: http://badgergp.com/2011/04/pop-the-good-week-bad-week-of-f1-4/

    Two things:

    1. Didn't know Prince William had visited an F1 team

    2. Jake Humphrey is presenting the BBC Coverage tomorrow?

  • Matt G28/04/2011 at 12:15

Yeah, he's been there this year, its great to see him around again :)

I think since Mosley is gone, he'll be around more

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 12:15

Yeah, he's been there this year, its great to see him around again :)

I need to start paying more attention.

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 12:15

    2. Jake Humphrey is presenting the BBC Coverage tomorrow?

One of many. Not sure why!

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 12:16

    2. Jake Humphrey is presenting the BBC Coverage tomorrow?

One of many. Not sure why!

I guess most of the people who do 'live events' are in the sport department

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:16

    2. Jake Humphrey is presenting the BBC Coverage tomorrow?

he's a correspondant, the actual host is Huw someone that I've never heard of but I assume British people know :D

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 12:16

I think Peter windsor is doing a good job with his show and people are too harsh on him for the USF1 stuff.

    Have a good afternoon everyone!

    Bye! :D

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:18

Mainly because they had no coloured pencils or felt tip pens.

    Huw Edwards.

    Oh. I haven't seen him :(

I don't know about every race... I am sure I have seen him at 2 though. Maybe I just filled in the blanks. He handed the humble pie to EJ in Australia

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:28

    Huw Edwards.

yes that chap. I Wikipediaed him, now it makes sense that he's hosting.

I just downloaded the official programme on iBooks. I've never used iBooks before!

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 12:28

    Huw Edwards.

With a name like that he has to be the royal correspondent. Where's his other surname?

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 12:29

he's a correspondant, the actual host is Huw someone that I've never heard of but I assume British people know :D

    He's Welsh like you ;)

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 12:29

I just downloaded the official programme on iBooks. I've never used iBooks before!

I think Mrs. Goat wants an e-reader, now I told her Mills & Boon are on there!

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 12:29

am kinda confused why people are confused that jake is covering the wedding, i'd be surprised if he wasn't. the man is destined for much bigger things than f1.

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 12:29

I thought he wanted to do sport.

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:30

    He's Welsh like you ;)

I figured with a name like Huw he must be Welsh. Welsh names are crazy.

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 12:30

the man is destined for much bigger things than f1.

surely not Don't Scare The Hare???

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 12:31

With a name like that he has to be the royal correspondent. Where's his other surname?

He isn't actually... The BBC are using this as a test bed for a whole new generation of people and Huw is pretty old. But the problem is that for all the main royal things you usually get a Dimbleby and they are getting on a bit. And the good thing is that this isn't a funeral so it's less of a problem if something goes wrong.

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 12:31

I thought he wanted to do sport.

but what do the bbc want him to do?

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 12:31

I think Mrs. Goat wants an e-reader, now I told her Mills & Boon are on there!

A friend of mine used to be an editor for them

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 12:32

Dunno. I like my sports people to do sports.

Then again, I'm just glad it's not Tess Daly.

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:32

    Like Amy ;)

My grandads name was Marks! It's like Mark only plural! Why would you pluralise a name?

My uncles middle name is Marks but my cousins name is Mark. None of that extra s business for us Kiwi folk :D

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 12:32

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 12:33

Got to do a wedding and not allowed to take an iPad? I'd quit :)

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 12:34

Then again, I'm just glad it's not Tess Daly.

Are Ant and Dec hosting ITV's coverage?

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:34

Will he be allowed to take the iPad?

it's not an iPad, its a BBC branded tablet. #thankslukeh

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 12:34

Will he be allowed to take the iPad?

Will it have a royal cover? Like a silver designer one or something? Will he be reading out tweets?

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 12:34

Dunno. I like my sports people to do sports.

It does seem odd but if it advances his career a bit then it's a good thing.

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:36

The official programme says that they're both going to say "I will"

Thats a bit presumptuous, what if one of them decides not to?

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 12:37

    :) :) :)

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 12:38

What's the difference between that and "I do"?

it's the phrasing of the question... "Do you Katherine take..." sounds archaic

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:39

What's the difference between that and "I do"?

The difference between 'do you take' and 'will you take'

Proceeds of the sale of the programme go to the foundation of prince william and prince harry. Maybe they should have thought that through before they gave it away for free digitally :)

I can confirm there will be not much wedding and an awful lot of singing and hymns :)

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 12:40

7 years of being engaged and we still haven't organised a wedding :)

the longest engagement amongst people I know (that actually ended in marriage) was 22 years, so you've got a long way to go :)

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 13:05

From what I can understand some people removed themselves because they had recently had cake. Lou suggested Lukeh because it was their anniversary which is good because it wasn't self serving. And Paul suggested himself because he wanted to see if I could get a cake to the other side of the world but mentioned he had recently had cake

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 13:06

Lou also suggested Christine because Christine made Sidepodcast which meant she got to meet Lukeh.

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 13:07

Maybe given the special circumstances Lukeh and Lou should get cake?

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 13:07

I have not had cake or a hot cross bun this year! and half way round the world is a good test for the big one! :)

Good idea, you could send them a half each! :D

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 13:09

    I vote for this.

  • Alex Andronov28/04/2011 at 13:10

I'll have to keep my half way around the world powder dry... But unless another idea comes that sounds like a good plan. I already have Lukeh's address but I don't have Lou's... So if somebody see's Lou around then can you ask her to send me her address [email protected] or dm or whatever :)

Definitely! Besides, today is Pay It Forward day, so we should all be doing good things for others; (I picked my dad's car lock because he locked his keys in his car and the spare didn't work. I feel very Roz Myers today) it'll come back in good ways :)

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 13:46

am kinda confused why people are confused that jake is covering the wedding, i'd be surprised if he wasn't. the man is destined for much bigger things than f1.

and we'll all be the poorer for it.

that said, I agree with Christine. i'm not exactly sure how this fits into Jake's future as the face of BBC Sport. unless he ends up being the face of the entire BBC?

Jake is also doing the Olympics I believe. He will be the new Des Lynam / Steve Ryder. If he stays on after the first term of the BBC's F1 contract finishes, I'll be surprised.

Lots of the sports people are covering it. for example the TMS cricket commentators are working on the radio commentary

Not really. It's just the BBC has a policy of having BBC comentators, as opposed to BBC F1 commentators.

GP3 should be a good indicator. With regard to NASCAR, he is so dedicated to finding a Formula 1 drive at some point that he is bypassing all the oval events in Indy lights to sell out to GP3. In fact he missed a Long Beach practice session because of practicing for GP3 and having a late flight from Spain.

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 15:14

Sounds like Scott Speed: The Sequel. That said, if he really wants to make it to F1, I don't see how he can do it without living in Europe. Those trans-Atlantic flights will take it out of him.

Who's backing him, by the way?

  • Amy28/04/2011 at 15:15

even the F1 photographers are getting in on the action. Clive Mason tweets: Eyeing my bed for the last time for 48 hours, tomorrow night to be spent in a bag on the floor on The Mall..think I should stick to sport!!

I hope they're paying him well to stay there overnight just to get a good spot!

...which may end up doing more harm than good. Pick a junior formula and stick to it. Hard to tell with GP3 so far; his test times have been OK, but not spectacular, but it's only testing...

It doesn't help that they're at least 4 timezones apart, either - and in this case, it's 9 timezones apart.

Wasn't he Keke's teammate the year he won the title? Good on him.

Wait, so Conor Daly is racing with an American license. Interesting decision, that.

  • David Camp28/04/2011 at 15:22

Conor is the only American and youngest competitor ever to have won the Walter Hayes trophy.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/04/2011 at 15:23

Yep. He's a management coach now. He does lots of seminars around the US for businesses.

    Because Conor is American

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 15:24

    Because Conor is American

True. But he's like the American version of Nico Rosberg. He could've raced with either license, really.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/04/2011 at 15:26

Conor is the only American and youngest competitor ever to have won the Walter Hayes trophy.

True, but that matters little in the higher formulae

It still means no other American has ever done it.

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/04/2011 at 15:28

True, but no one really cares where the driver comes from. Whether they're good enough for the rest of the ladder is what matters.

True, but no one really cares where the driver comes from. Whether they're good enough for the rest of the ladder is what matters.

The states want to have a great driver to back in open wheel racing. We don't have one right now. The top 20% of Indycar don't have an American in it. The names might be recognizable but until their is true national pride behind a driver the sport won't reach its peak.

True and it'd be great if Daly does make it, but right now, Alexander Rossi is a better possibility and he has an F1 team behind him.

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 15:35

It's a tricky issue, really. IndyCar is somewhat stuck in the middle of NASCAR and F1. It has a hard time attracting the best drivers in the world, because it's neither the top American motorsport (that's NASCAR) or the top open-seater motorsport (that's F1).

It's a chicken-egg proposition. IndyCar won't attract top talent unless it becomes truly top-level motorsport (either in an American or open-seater sense). And it won't become top-level motorsport unless it attracts top talent.

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 15:36

He made a mis-step and lost a year because of it, but is back in a better series now. A move to GP2 Asia was too soon, while a year in GP3 was a waste of time.

    Bernie WHAT?

Ecclestone keen to give Bahrain more time

    From the man himself:

“I suppose we'd be safe by early June or something like that. Things can change in a couple of weeks ... so you don't know. All of a sudden everything might be peaceful in a month's time and they are happy to run the event and so we are happy to be there.”

I know he's good friends with the al-Khalifas, and they hosted a memorable 60th anniversary event (even if the race was atrocious). But really - waiting until June? At this rate, we'll wait until September before someone decides.

Also, it never gets suddenly peaceful. It usually gets suddenly violent...

  • Leigh O'Gorman28/04/2011 at 16:11

    Bernie WHAT?

    Yep... exactly...

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 16:12

He wants to get paid, i guess everything this year was structured around the revenue and broadcast for 20 races?

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 16:12

    Yep... exactly...

    *facepalm*

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 16:13

So we're still working around the premise that the Bahrainis have to decide? I thought they already decided to cancel it last time? Doesn't that mean Bernie gets paid anyway?

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 16:14

So we're still working around the premise that the Bahrainis have to decide? I thought they already decided to cancel it last time? Doesn't that mean Bernie gets paid anyway?

They announced it, dont know if they decided to actuly postpone it.

There is probably a clause saying they wont have to pay if its force majore

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 16:15

There is probably a clause saying they wont have to pay if its force majore

True, but I'm not sure anti-government protests are "an act of God", so to speak.

  • Nick28/04/2011 at 16:18

True, but I'm not sure anti-government protests are "an act of God", so to speak.

I think political unrest is usualy included as it is (theoretically and usualy) beond each party's control (the contract is likely with a business entity, not the governement itself)

  • Journeyer28/04/2011 at 16:21

I think political unrest is usually included as it is (theoretically and usually) beyond each party's control (the contract is likely with a business entity, not the government itself)

It's very disappointing that Bernie's willing to do anything and everything to get this race back, considering everything that's happened there.

Then again, he's the squillionaire, not me.

  • RubberGoat28/04/2011 at 16:32

It's very disappointing that Bernie's willing to do anything and everything to get this race back, considering everything that's happened there.

  • Mr C28/04/2011 at 16:41

    WHAT?

    ffs.

i guess he's using this a threat for something else entirely unrelated. there is no way in the world f1 can hold a race in bahrain this year, the next or even the one after that.

Also, it never gets suddenly peaceful. It usually gets suddenly violent...

    very true.

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)28/04/2011 at 16:47

I agree. Does anyone actually want this race to happen?

    Hi, Greetings from Boston.

Making a quick in & out here, just surveyed this thread.

My take: Unlike, say, Belgium, Bahrain is a VERY deep pocket, and Bernie will go to great lengths to keep his hooks in it. For example, hold a former-world-champions-reunion in there where there's zero motorsports heritage instead of say Spa or Monza.

In all fairness, they did state it was a publicity stunt. The grandfather played for them or something like that

    Phew!

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 20:30

I'm going to tell a story. It may be one of those "you had to be there" things but it will amuse us when we look back in years to come.

So, Mr C asked me to tweak the volumes on the latest episode of Sidepodchat, which I did. I uploaded the file and said:

"Mr C, when you've got a second, please check the chat."

"Chat?" he asked, thinking I meant realtime.

I clarified what I meant. He nodded. I stood up to get a drink.

"Don't forget to check the chat," I said on the way out.

"Chat?" he asked, in exactly the same tone of voice as before.

He had forgotten the entire conversation in the time it took me to stand up and cross the room.

We have reached a new low.

  • Steven Roy28/04/2011 at 20:33

We have reached a new low.

Do you ever get the impression he is just not listening?

  • lou28/04/2011 at 20:33

    XD hehehehehehehe!!!

Do you ever get the impression he is just not listening?

    Hehehe, quite often :)

  • Maverick28/04/2011 at 20:36

We have reached a new low.

    Have you tried rebooting him?

    Updating all drivers?

    Defragmenting?

  • Christine28/04/2011 at 20:36

    Defragmenting?

This is the one that might work, I think.

  • lou28/04/2011 at 20:36

    XD hehehehehehehe!!!

it's funny cause it's not overly surprising. <3 mr c.

Sounds more like you need to archive some of the stuff rattling round his brain and get more RAM installed so he doesn't immediately forget stuff

Lukeh is watching a documentary on a famous man u footballer.. the only thing i like so far is the fact it's narrated by Bill Nighy.

Am using this time to edit even more photos :(

Probably because I think its an actual documentary there won't be.

Plus he's from Ashington and therefore awesome.

The youngest signing by an F1 team at the moment is 11 (a Canadian karter in Ferrari's driver development programme). Not heard of anyone driving a kart at below age 3, but even that's scarily young to be committed to a particular team.

So I took stock of everything as Alex suggested. Then did some driving and watched a show I'd never heard of called 'Burn Notice' at my mates place, alongside a hefty Chinese meal. Then more driving and home again.

Picked some Coca-Cola on the way back (and some beer). Coke was to wake me up to drive home (lots of food and lots of counting = zzz). I fancied getting the glass bottles because I still think they are a novelty after they vanished for a long while. No bottle opener. Drive another 30mins home without caffiene or sugar.

I'm not comment trawling the whole thread but I just have to say, I really don't like him doing 'events' after he completely ruined the Olympic ceremonies in Beijing by constantly telling us what was about to happen.
