Ah-ha, the end of the week at last, and another weekend just around the corner. It's been a nice slow end to the week in terms of F1 news, but I have a feeling (and Joe said) it's all going to start kicking off again next week. Meanwhile, here's what we're focusing on instead:

  • We started turning our attention towards the Sidepodparty yesterday, and came up with the Christmas Carol that will replace the 12 days of Christmas. Last year, during the party, we all took turns to sing an F1 themed 12 days, and this time it's all about Jingle Bells. Naturally, we've set up a wiki page for alternative lyrics and volunteer voices.
  • Yesterday's Thursday Thoughts was a good one, taking a closer look at the possibility of a group launch by FOTA rather than the individual team launches we know and love. We had some great answers from Lukeh, Jackie, Pat, Sean and Lady Snowcat. Mr C said he was writing one, but I haven't seen it yet, so it will have to be a Friday thought instead.
  • Finally, we did a bit of an F1 Minute catchup yesterday, posting two of everything. There are two delicious shows about Donington and FOTA, whilst the Big Picture took a slight turn away from normal programming to feature DTM cars and politicians.

That's all for now, I think. As ever, let us know what you're up to over the weekend and if you have anything exciting planned. Watch out for the Friday Fun game appearing later in the morning, and I will see you in the comments.

Oh yes, this is the one where we let you know what's happening over the weekend, I like this bit.

I hope to complete one past paper per day from Saturday to Tuesday. Up to now I have just been making revision notes which is why I can't get into it, too boring. I have four papers to do and that should get me in the mood for Wednesday's exam. My 'reward' if I think I've done well in the exam is to buy F1 2009 for the Wii.

For the non-study downtime (i.e. most of it) this weekend I've just realised I actually don't have anything else planned, for the first time in ages. I'm not quite sure what to do.

  • Chris27/11/2009 at 00:24

Ok, how about as a reward for all the hard revision you're doing now? That way, pass or fail as long as you've put the work in, you get the game!

Not sure. Borders tend to be in cities and there are plenty of other newsagents etc who can sell it. A lot of the international and specialist magazines may struggle if the company goes bust.

  • Amy27/11/2009 at 03:01

mint sauce is the worst condiment in the world and would be banned if i was queen. I will have lots of gravy and a bit of tomato sauce. The latter makes me a heathen, they say tomato sauce on a roast is ghastly. I say its grand.

Success. Finally finished and sent the stuff I was working on.

    http://www.patronisef1.com/index.php/features/six-of-the-best/1614-six-of-the-bestoverlooked-f1-moments

Most intrigued by the toin coss in Watkins Glen '67. Never knew that one took place.

Poor DC for his Brazil 2001 pass, as he came second in two respects - not only had his teammate done it first in Belgium the year before, but JPM made a spectacular pass on Schumi in the same race earlier than DC did... At least DC won the race though. ;)

Apparently the government down there is paying for “Stefan Grand Prix” to become a reality.

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:35

actually , the "F1 2010's unsolved mysteries" article at Autosport.com a day or two ago suggested the same scenario may be on cards:

The word on the streets of the historic German city is that 150-odd staff will be retained as Toyota Motorsport GmbH downsizes from a full F1 operation to a consultancy offering engineering services to industry - motorsport, automotive and other. Thus, where the Resource Restriction Agreement and general cost-cutting once made the largest of all teams a prime target for such consultancies, TMG, with state-of-art dynamometers, full CFD facilities, simulators and two massive windtunnels, aims to transform itself into the best of such service providers!

There is also talk that Toyota's TF110 design is up for sale – complete with engine and gearbox - and that some dark-suited gentlemen believed to be of Serbian descent (Stefan GP anyone?) have been spotted strolling around TMG at rather strange hours. Apparently the deal is that TMG provides a turn-key operation – complete with mechanics, race engineers and management, drivers (if required – including Kamui Kobayashi), and, crucially, 2010 entry and full Concorde benefits – to the highest bidder, who would then run the car from a base of his choosing.

http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2518 - that is behind the paid wall

I have been to the Stokehouse, just down the beach a bit. Only because that's where McLaren have their press events :D

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:45

    Isn't Stefan his first name?

I think his name is Zoran Stefanovic, so stefan is abbreviation of his surname

are you coming over next year? Without my brother to entertain, I plan to spend a lot more time in St Kilda, driver stalking.

  • Jason Baker27/11/2009 at 07:47

Didn't this group try to get one of the new team's entries earlier this year?

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:47

yes, it is part of my plans for next year.

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:49

Didn't this group try to get one of the new team's entries earlier this year?

yes, they did, and they also made a complaint to European Commission about FIA forcing the new entrants to go with Cosworth engines

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 07:49

RG won't like this. From Joe:

"And while all this was going on I got a call at some point from a little bird in Cologne who told me that the staff of Toyota have been told that their entry has been sold on to someone else – and that some of them are going to be asked to stay on to build and run their car for a man called Stefan from Serbia. Apparently the government down there is paying for “Stefan Grand Prix” to become a reality."

    http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/the-birds-of-cologne/

As it stands, the only way Sauber get in now is if Renault pulls out.

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 07:49

Fudge - Wolf beat me to it. :D

  • Amy27/11/2009 at 07:49

hooray! I hope the buzz isn't too different since its not the start of the season.

yes, they did, and they also made a complaint to European Commission about FIA forcing the new entrants to go with Cosworth engines

what engines will Stefan run now though?

let me just say - the team name sounds rather F1-Reject-ful already.

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:51

Excellent thought, Wolf! You may be correct - Sauber may be announcing it's well and truly the end of the line for them...

Zoran Grand Prix would have been so much cooler!

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:53

it depends how they manage things. I can imagine well run small operation with ex-Toyota team technical support and know how to perform better than the Toyota F1 ... it it is well run

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/11/2009 at 07:54

Didn't this group try to get one of the new team's entries earlier this year?

yes, they did, and they also made a complaint to European Commission about FIA forcing the new entrants to go with Cosworth engines

Who recently threw it out, I think...

or Zohan :-) don't mess with Zohan on the sidepods :-)

I would compare this to the Jordan/Midland scenario - good people, crappy owner, team falls through anyway...

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:55

Who recently threw it out, I think...

I only caught the news about court throwing out N Technology complain, not sure how this Stefan complaint to EU worked out

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 07:58

I would compare this to the Jordan/Midland scenario - good people, crappy owner, team falls through anyway...

one of the downfalls for Midland was the underestimation of the cost involved after the purchase of the team by Mr Shneider... once there is no money even people with good plans and intentions turn into crappy owners ...

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 07:59

one of the downfalls for Midland was the underestimation of the cost involved after the purchase of the team by Mr Shneider... once there is no money even people with good plans and intentions turn into crappy owners ...

And I also see that being Stefan's downfall. Even more so when your government is the one funding you and they can easily bail at the sight of a budget request too large or angry taxpayers or an election defeat...

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:01

That said, add Team Serbia (Stefan) to Team Italia (Ferrari), Team GBR (McLaren), Team Germany (Merc), Team France (Renault, if they stay around), Team (Force) India, and Team US(F1).

Memories of the Gordon Bennett Trophy (long ago) and A1GP (not so long ago) come flooding back...

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 08:02

And I also see that being Stefan's downfall. Even more so when your government is the one funding you and they can easily bail at the sight of a budget request too large or angry taxpayers or an election defeat...

it can easily turn out that way ... but if they fail, they will still have the entry to sell :-)

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:03

but if they fail, they will still have the entry to sell :-)

And thus BMW's failure to sign the Concorde (thus leaving them with no entry to sell) becomes even more apparent...

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:07

What I do find interesting is if Toyota indeed sell their engine design to Stefan. Would he decide to hire an engine house to create those engines? Or would he go for the Cosworths that he seems to have pushed away? Or would Ferrari agree to supply them with engines instead if Sauber do indeed not make it?

  • F1Wolf27/11/2009 at 08:09

And thus BMW's failure to sign the Concorde (thus leaving them with no entry to sell) becomes even more apparent...

well, BMW AG could not care less, but Concorde is signed by teams not by car companies, so if there was any failure part of blame also falls on Peter Sauber's shoulders I would say (although hard to tell how much could he influence with his minority shareholding)

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:09

Dubai and the debt mess making its way to the Twitter trends...

Although Nick has confirmed he has no connections to the fraudulent companies involved, I wonder how hard hit the entire Dubai economy will be because of it.

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:11

I think the BMW AG board is to blame. Theissen (who is team principal) looked like he really wanted to sign, but the board didn't let him. Remember that presscon the day BMW withdrew? Theissen looked like he wanted no part of it...

  • Journeyer27/11/2009 at 08:31

Aabar is an Abu Dhabi-owned and based company, so it should still be financially stable - for now at least.

More details on Aabar here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704431804574539282325559224.html

VW FINALLY shows some interest in F1... but not until 2012.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80348

They may be the first manufacturer in the next cycle of manufacturer involvement in F1.

  • Jason Baker27/11/2009 at 08:33

What about Aabar? (sounds like a Danish word!)

Aabar is traded (and headquartered) in Abu Dhabi, where markets are closed until next week, so I don't think they have been affected (yet). Ultimately, their fate will depend on whether investors view Dubai World as a self-contained problem, or as, the article stated, view the entire Gulf region as less desirable.

I was also curious about whether Santander had any significant exposure to Dubai, but it appears that they do not.

Someone in an LJ community with a Heikki icon made the following comment:

I love the Pussycat Doll, when she's in at the end of Lewis' win with all the mechanics who couldn't give a **** that they're squeezing the life out of her, but she doesn't seem to care. She seems so fascinated and so focused all through all the races, and it's just...really, really cute. Particularly when she bounced up and down shouting 'YAY' at the end. Strangely, I really like her.

It's almost enough to make me stop liking him, if thats the sort of fans he has.

Hardly. This is the first time in 3 or 4 years the Pug has been better than the Audi. I suspect Audi will blitz them at Le Mans this year.

I'm basing it across the entire 2009 season, not just Le Mans this year. I didn't look prior to 2009, although it has to be said the Pugs certainly had the pace to win before this year if their car held up.

I suspect Pug will win again next year.

I been collecting information for a lecture next year about models of development and Dubai came out just like Iceland, a bubble waiting to burst.

Abu Dhabi does not look in any way the same! While Dubai went on a building spree of Egyptian Pyramid scale its conservative neighbour is investing in huge solar energy farms (largest in the middle east).

Pug have had the fastest car for years. It was only this year that they had the better team. They were AWESOME at Le Mans, but I am convinced they would have lost Petit Le Mans had it run the full course.

Incidentally the next major ACO rule change is for 2011...

Ah-ha, the end of the week at last, and another weekend just around the corner. It's been a nice slow end to the week in terms of F1 news, but I have a feeling (and Joe said) it's all going to start kicking off again next week.

Never mind next week, it's all kicked off today! ;)

It looks like the space shuttle will make its first planned landing slot today at 14:44 UK time. The astronauts have already been told to close the payload bay doors. The inside of the doors are radiators which are used to cool the shuttle. They are always kept open as when they are closed the shuttle uses up vast amounts of its limited water supply for cooling. The astronauts will be told to suit up and the go / no go on the de-orbit burn will be at 13:17pm UK.

There is a second landing slot one orbit (an hour and a half ish) after the first one.

Updates will be given at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

    Show time.

Mission control just gave a go for de-orbit burn. In half an hour the shuttle will fire its orbital manouevring engines to slow it down and start its descent. Odd as it seems in space it flies backwards. The landing will be at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in about an hour and a half.

Once the de-orbit burn is made they are coming home regardless what happens.

You have that with launches. The thing about the landing is that it has to happen regardless what goes wrong. The shuttle glides like a brick so the pilot has to find a way to make sure it hits the ground wheels down

  • Steven Roy27/11/2009 at 14:29

Nothing to do with his driving and everything to do with his marketability - look at what the team stands for and its market!

  • Alex Andronov27/11/2009 at 16:50

Katherine is rapidly running out of excuses on an intergalactic level... But hearing about the 4,500 years ago thing said "hold on, they were making their bowls out of wood back then, so they could just burn them and not wash up".

I pointed out that we have a dishwasher so it isn't really a problem for bowls only pans (which don't go in).

If there is a serious threat to space time then you are better eating out. If you order in you have to pay up front whereas if you eat out the universe may be ripped to shreds before you finish and you won't have to pay.

Apparently Toyota's future may not be so rosy?

Stefan Grand Prix, the Serbian team that is seeking a move into Formula 1, says it is still looking at opportunities to make it onto the grid next year - despite dismissing talk that it is about to buy Toyota's F1 entry.

Does he not know that he should only eat pasta and fish?

  • Lady Snowcat27/11/2009 at 19:22

    Now there's a question...

Would you rather have JV or a fillet steak driving your car?....

I believe that both are probably more suited for NASCAR...

By the way have Lotus actually done a press release recently?...

  • Rich27/11/2009 at 19:47

Would you rather have JV or a fillet steak driving your car?....

I would rather have the steak when its cooked you can at least eat it!

I would put JV in a Lotus if I was running the team

JV simply did not do well enough so BMW Sauber dropped him 2/3 way through the 2006 season (he only got 9 points in 2005 season). Even though he was in his second year of contract he only scored 7 points in the first 12 races - Nick his team mate had in the same period scored 13 points and finished the season with 23 points and that was his first year with the team after leaving Williams.

I need to pop to get some bread, but i'm going to go to London tomorrow for a trade show, but know it won't take up much of my day.

What shall I go and do? (emphasis on cheap)

    Back in a tic

I was actually going to make sandwiches!

I would say just go to Greggs but I can. not. find. one. in. London!!!

  • Lukeh27/11/2009 at 21:55

That was odd. Randomly flicking through Nick Mason's book and the first word I see when I stopped on a random page was Michael Schumacher..

  • lou27/11/2009 at 21:56

I would say just go to Greggs but I can. not. find. one. in. London!!!

that's because we don't have them in the south! :) if you want food you go to nero's just cause they are awesome :D

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 21:56

I would say just go to Greggs but I can. not. find. one. in. London!!!

umm.. there is one in staines...

In fact there are two and they are opposite one another.

Putting Lukeh in the middle of the road could be interesting :D

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 21:58

that's because we don't have them in the south! :) if you want food you go to nero's just cause they are awesome :D

Some of them are called baker's oven

But they have the same food and greggs logos. They are usualy a bit bigger than greggs with seats ;)

  • Lukeh27/11/2009 at 21:58

that's because we don't have them in the south! :) if you want food you go to nero's just cause they are awesome :D

  • Lukeh27/11/2009 at 21:58

Putting Lukeh in the middle of the road could be interesting :D

Well at the Sidepodmeetup I forgot what the green and red man means on traffic lights and the last time I was in London I nearly got run over so it could easily happen!

  • Jon Waldock27/11/2009 at 21:59

Well at the Sidepodmeetup I forgot what the green and red man means on traffic lights and the last time I was in London I nearly got run over so it could easily happen!

Its fully pedestrianised, but being in between 2 greggs could lead to an impossible decision ;)

Alison made excuses for them, but the damage was done :P

Alison is right Nero's are awesome.. plus it doesn't take much to put it on yourself ;)

  • Lukeh27/11/2009 at 22:15

Alison is right Nero's are awesome.. plus it doesn't take much to put it on yourself ;)

The amount of cream they put on my hot chocolate. oh my god. The amount of cream.

    ...

    oh my god.

  • paul27/11/2009 at 22:15

Well booo. Where is Di Resta to go now, if not to FIF1?

  • Lukeh27/11/2009 at 22:16

That's an awesome thing btw. It provided much om nom nom. I almost forgot I had a hot chocolate underneath.

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 22:18

Alison is right Nero's are awesome.. plus it doesn't take much to put it on yourself ;)

It doesnt, but they were not at all busy, and it was more that it was my first experience with them.

If i had used them before and like the shop it wouldnt bother me in the slightest, however as a new user i am far less tolerant, if that makes sense :)

Im not saying i wouldnt go there, but if i had a choice between say nero and starbucks i would go to starbucks ;)

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 22:19

Noo, I prefer Nero's now. The starbucks hot choccys are so... dry in comparison.

Plus they provide less yummy cream. Ahem.

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 22:20

Noo, I prefer Nero's now. The starbucks hot choccys are so... dry in comparison.

Really? They have special dome lids so they can put stupid amounts of cream on the take out coffee!

  • paul27/11/2009 at 22:20

I like that rumor, and shall run with it.

I went for lunch at chillis today which is an american chain i go to ocassionaly,

The service was bad as we couldnt get a server for ages to get more drinks...

It wouldnt put me off going back there as i have had good service before, but they got a very small tip

Bad service at Wagamammas? Really? How odd!

  • Nick in Dubai27/11/2009 at 22:43

    wha?

For some reason since i put my dubai sim in it, if i have 3 or 4 numbers and an email address saved to my contacts for a person and i sms them, it will send it to all the numbers, not just the phone i want to send it to :(

Since most people here have at least 2 mobiles it is quite expensive!

  • Alex Andronov27/11/2009 at 22:49

Mr C should like wagamamas simply because they have the whole menu in lowercase (it is the one that fourstar had that time in the summer)

  • Pat W27/11/2009 at 22:49

I have just been informed that we are having Chinese takeaway. No pans.

I wanted that but ended up with a bit of chicken pie instead. I think if I still want the beef crispy noodles tomorrow I'll have to get them.

If they opened up a spin off chain, i might go there, but not to one of there original restaurants.

I am sure they are not all like that, i am sure it is a good place to gofor some people.

I would hapily go back to neros, it was only a little thing, and completly silly. But waggamamas is personal, im never giving them a penny

So, I was in the pub and was told there's this game called Crysis. First-person shooter. Somebody has made a mod for the Back to the Future DeLorean and put it on to YouTube.... so now I'm home I just found it :-D

    http://www.you...m/watch?v=DZAaKH0FYO8

But it's not a Back To The Future 2 Mod. That was the best one, wasn't it?

  • Scott Woodwiss27/11/2009 at 22:59

    ...wow...

Scary thing is, the full clip of that is on YouTube somewhere. Let me find it.

in response to this comment by Lady Snowcat.

I tried listing all rookies since 1997, driver that scored a podium are in bold

1997 Nakano, Trulli, Wurz, R Schumacher

    1998

    1999 Gene, de la Rosa

2000 Burti, Mazzacane, Heidfeld, Zonta, Button

2001 Yoong, Enge, Alonso, Bernoldi, Montoya, Kimi

2002 Davidson, McNish, Webber, Sato, Massa

2003 Baumgartner, Kiesa, Pizzonia, Wilson, Firman, da Matta

    2004 Bruni, Pantano, Glock, Klien

2005 Doornbos, Liuzzi, Friesacher, Albers, Karthikeyan, Monteiro

2006 Montagny, Yamamoto, Ide, Speed, Rosberg, Kubica

2007 Winkelhock, Nakajima, Sutil, Vettel, Hamilton, Kovalainen

    2008 Bourdais Piquet

    2009 Tim, Grosjean, Kobayashi, Buemi

2003 and 2005 were rubbish years.

Good work Kathi. I have highlighted in italic the drivers I think were 'hard done by' and deserve(d) a fairer chance in F1. Perhaps some of them weren't suited to F1 cars though and I am tempted to include Wilson.

  • lou27/11/2009 at 23:13

hahah :) it's odd cause he rang the home phone to ask if i was making a cup of tea... and then rang me back to ask what i was doing tomorrow... and then i rang him to ask what type of tea he wanted... shouting is over rated...

  • Pat W27/11/2009 at 23:14

2003 and 2005 were rubbish years.

Actually, in what way was '05 rubbish? Doornbos is good, Liuzzi is good, Friesacher was good until he broke his leg and took a year off, Albers should be good.

  • startledbunny27/11/2009 at 23:16

Kathi - you missed one rookie - Esteban Tuero in 1998 ;)

the 98 statistics on forix only showed the driver that scored points and I was too lazy to look elsewhere. There are probably a lot more mistakes in my list. :)

Correction - yes he did drive in 1994, but it was in 1995 when he was hit by the safety vehicle, and it was Hungaroring. His car was also hit by a course car at Monaco, I remember.
