Thursday has arrived and although it is an unpopular day amongst Sidepodcast readers, I am determined we should all make the most of it. To help us along the way, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Pitlane Fanatic have kicked off a great new series of posts, going deeper into some of the well-used phrases of an F1 weekend. This first entry looks at the racing line, particularly when cornering, and how getting it right can affect your performance when you come out of the corner. A very insightful post.
  • James Allen has shared the latest in the Schumacher rumours, and although the speculation hasn't stopped, it still seems to be erring on the side of unlikely. I also enjoyed James' top 5 drivers post, where at the bottom he picks some winners of his book. He follows it by saying, if you didn't win, still buy the book anyway! Made me chuckle.
  • Meanwhile, it seems like Simon Gillett just isn't ready to give up on the British GP dream, despite the fact that his company have gone into administration. He thinks the possibility is still there for a buyer to come in and save the day. Hmm.

That's all for now. Let us know what you're up to today and how your week is panning out, and I will see you in the comments.

and went for a big run day before.

pool cramp. both legs. my advice = figure out your own fitness regime.

my advice: if your fitness regime is golf, and you get weeks of rain so don't play, you get lazy

  • Scott Woodwiss26/11/2009 at 00:41

pool cramp. both legs. my advice = figure out your own fitness regime.

I had that when I went to the pool for the first time in ages earlier this year. Managed to go about half a length and then my legs just went dead!

As for the fitness regime, I'm already on to that one. Personally, I know I've lost quite a bit of weight but there's still a little bit of fat I need to get rid of. The treadmill and bike work should help burn that off.

  • Jon Waldock26/11/2009 at 00:42

I can't say I lost it again! I'll look like I'm selling on my documents.

It surprises me that you have to give it to them. Here is illegal for any company/particular to retain your ID or passport

  • Pat W26/11/2009 at 01:13

There's a new law which says you have to prove who you are when you join a company.

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 01:13

Yes. They never took adequate ID in the first place though. It seems I've been working illegally ;)

in those cases we present a photocopy, one certified by the police that says it is a true copy of the original. but we never ever leave the original document.

  • Pat W26/11/2009 at 01:15

    I likes

I don't think we can do it this week though 'cos I don't think there's a definitive list of who is testing, plus we should probably see their times :-)

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 01:16

But you don't usually have to give them the passport, just give them a photocopy

sorry, Monday 30th. something to do with GoDaddy.com

  • Pat W26/11/2009 at 01:41

I thought she had signed for Andretti for the IRL and for a part time NASCAR program. What else can she do apart from pose in her bikini again?

Probably to announce GoDaddy as her NASCAR sponsor?

  • Pat W26/11/2009 at 01:51

#thursdaythought Why is F1 and Europe in general so far behind the US in terms of female racing drivers?

Even European drivers go to the US to race because they can't get a drive here.

I found out that the Bufori people were excited about their result in Macau - slow car, lasted only 4 laps (although that was apparently down to Yoong's driving too close to the wall) - Bufori BMS R1 shows amazing potential - that is amazing optimism :-)

there is a bar on of the Macau islands where all the bikers meet up for drinks on Saturday night after their race. that place is decorated with some amazing and unbelievable photos from the motorbike races ...

I tell you this was the first time I actually watched the bike race in Macau live and I did not feel very comfortable. all the cars crashing out in all the car races, then come the bikes where everybody knows that crashing is not a good idea at all ... still, they ride those bikes like there are no walls :-)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/11/2009 at 09:15

I was studying from home yesterday but my concentration levels and attention span are way too short. I did get stuff done, just slowly and intermittently. Keep doing other things until you feel so guilty you actually sit down and do what you're supposed to...

The fact that Zanardi even lasted this long with the amount of success that he had is quite the achievement in itself.

    No I didn't.

I ned to change the web...

I thought it was for kids

They actually withdrew the recommendation for that to be used on very young kids as well....

But they were so cute when they smelled of it

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 17:40

But they were so cute when they smelled of it

Ah some further research has told me that this was a temporary measure as a result of new guidelines. They've changed the formula and now it's safe from 2 months if you use the teething gel. The other one is rebranded as bonjela adult to avoid confusion.

  • Lukeh26/11/2009 at 17:41

Well this is annoying. Since the new windows I've lost lots of freeview channels.

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 17:41

It's because it has aspirin in it. You really shouldn't give kids aspirin in any form.

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 17:43

Well this is annoying. Since the new windows I've lost lots of freeview channels.

The windows have aspirin in them so Lukeh can't get freeview? Is it surprising some people get confused here?

Is this because it stops blood clotting?

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 17:45

    Risk of Reye's syndrome.

  • Lukeh26/11/2009 at 17:47

Booo? Do they benefit you in any way??

The windows have made things a lot warmer in the house asides from heating which is excellent. Concerning the issue with the freeview though, I've put it down to this.

    Cons

I've lost watch ITV, channel 5, and lots of others

    Pros

    I can't watch ITV and channel 5

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 17:50

    did the aerial move?

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 17:53

    What's that?

Blimey... erm I'm not wholly sure. I know it can range from causing lethargy and vomiting to brain damage, coma and death.

They can't prove it's caused by aspirin use in children but there's a pretty solid link. It onlt really affects children.

    Wayne Boyd?really ?

Awww haha you think he's annoyed with me?

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 18:27

What in the heck has happened to the iplayer website? It's a complete mess.

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 18:27

    Wayne Boyd?really ?

He has not had a good year but the race he won in the wet was an incredible performance. He is only the second driver ever after McNish that I have seen drive having preciously bever heard of him and been convinced that he would be great.

He drove a FFord race at Knockhill last season. He had 3 team mates all more experienced than him including the reigning Aussie FFord champion. He disappeared into the lead at the start but the Knockhill weather struck. The two straights were dry but the twiddly bits were wet, really wet. Two cars near the back got together on the wet stuff and one of them had an oil pipe broken. Boyd arrived first and spun out on it but recovered the spin in third place. Inside a lap or two he was back in the lead. His Aussie team mate was right on his tail so Boyd would take it really easy into the apex then get on the throttle only when he could put it on the floor. That way he always had a car length on his team mate. After about three laps he had built a gap and then disappeared into the lead again.

A driver that young who is so much faster is worth watching. One who can go off, recover and stay calm enough to get back to the front is better. Add in the clever tactical driving and you have someone special. Of course he has to deliver in F3 next season or none of that matters.

  • Jon Waldock26/11/2009 at 18:29

i guess i've always thought of him good, but not great, but the next few years will be crusial

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 18:34

I am basing my opinion on seeing him drive one race at a track. He totally dominated FFord that season though. I expected him to do more this season but some drivers seem to struggle in their first F3 season. His wet drive at Donington(?) when he won this seaon got great write ups and at times he was lapping a couple of seconds faster than anyone. Normally when a driver does that in th wet it suggests the car is holding him back in the dry. Hopefully he will get a good team next season and I will find out if I am right about him.

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 18:40

Could be but that would be really unusual. He destroyed the field in FFord last season in all conditions. It will be interesting to see what happens next season.

Very interesting. Only sat in the Film and Video seminar, but I learnt what the course will entail. Good thing is regarding music on videos, there's no restrictions on what you can use. On the actual course, any music you use has to be self-created.

"Interesting line in AUTOSPORT today. Apparently Herr Schumacher's removal from the Ferrari F1 team was at the insistence of Señor Alonso. Looks like he has learned something from his McLaren adventure"

Then there maybe something in the Skewey to Merc story....

And that's tantamount to accepting that he torpedoed Kimi...

"hehe. He's a bit smarter that the #sillyFinn"

Hardly... just a different type of guy... more manipulative... and less secure in his own skin...

And you don't know if it was on Kimi's advice...

Two and two make 5 in this instance, you haven't given any evidence to back that assumption up and how come Kimi won the wdc if that was the case?

Lewis has never changed his helmet for them and neither did Hakkinen or DC. Should be able to do what he likes with it

  • lou26/11/2009 at 21:22

that is quite random. i cant see why not

it just seems that they are all about their image right? maybe it was a mistake on lewis' part but his silverstone 'special' helmet was awful...

oooh and he gets diamonds on his helmet at monaco!

    oh... joy...can't wait :/

  • Lukeh26/11/2009 at 21:22

Lewis has never changed his helmet for them and neither did Hakkinen or DC. Should be able to do what he likes with it

Can't see his design being grey black and red!

  • paul26/11/2009 at 21:22

Lewis has never changed his helmet for them and neither did Hakkinen or DC. Should be able to do what he likes with it

....as long as it has Vodafone stickers on it (and maybe Mobil)

  • lou26/11/2009 at 21:23

what's your reason Lou? Because the team ran the competition for the design?

no real reason tbh.. i just wondered, cause i Alonso changed his helmet.. and maybe heikki did? was just one of my random thoughts.

You should ask to be different to Lewis and to put something less silly on his helmet.

    Like Skittles. or pasta shells.

It sounds like there is a limit to Abu Dhabi's largesse.

"It is that Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich governing emirate of the United Arab Emirates, will not unconditionally bail out its more profligate neighbor. Instead, a genuine restructuring of Dubai’s debt, with pain being shared equally between Dubai and its bankers, needs to take place."

It sounds like there is a limit to Abu Dhabi's largesse.

when did all this kick off, i'm clearly completely removed from real news?

  • Kathi26/11/2009 at 21:54

Doesn't matter though since Kathi is in charge of pronunciation

Only of things that include Umlaute.

    Not 'Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company'?

Got my emirate wrong. It is Bahrain

  • me26/11/2009 at 21:55

Got my emirate wrong. It is Bahrain

ahh. so no-one in f1 is tied to dubai?

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 21:55

    and Finnish

    Just Nick ;)

  • Jon Waldock26/11/2009 at 21:55

Nick is in dubai and likes F1? does that count?

    Emirates sponsor Ferrari

Are Etihad and Emirates the same?

  • Bassano Clapper26/11/2009 at 21:56

    No

  • paul26/11/2009 at 21:56

ahh. so no-one in f1 is tied to dubai?

In that case, strike my comment. I felt sure some team must be depending on them.

ahh. so no-one in f1 is tied to dubai?

Off the top of my head no-one

    Abu Dhabi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etihad_Airways

Just Emirate Airlines' sponsorship which, these days, seems disposable :)

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 21:58

    Abu Dhabi http://en.wiki...g/wiki/Etihad_Airways

    and

    Dubai http://en.wiki...ki/Emirates_(airline)

FYI, I flew etihad once because it was cheap. It was worth being the most expensive. Highly recommended.

  • Kathi26/11/2009 at 22:00

Did they used to sponsor McLaren? :S

    yes

  • Jason Baker26/11/2009 at 22:02

when did all this kick off, i'm clearly completely removed from real news?

The proposed restructuring was announced yesterday, but it clearly caught investors by surprise.

“It’s shocking because for the past few months, the news coming out has given investors comfort that Dubai would most probably be able to meet its debt obligations and most analysts were of the view that Nakheel’s commitments would be met,” Shakeel Sarwar, head of asset management at SICO Investment Bank, told Reuters. “Abu Dhabi has been supportive of Dubai, but it appears this support is not enough for Dubai to meet its obligations on time.”

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:04

Was/is it Dubai that designed those islands to be in the shape of the world? It cost billions and then the property market crashed.

The world's stock markets hit a bit of a downward blip today

  • Jason Baker26/11/2009 at 22:05

Was/is it Dubai that designed those islands to be in the shape of the world? It cost billions and then the property market crashed.

Yes. More specifically, the company Dubai World and its developer subsidiary Nakheel.

  • Alison26/11/2009 at 22:05

when did all this kick off, i'm clearly completely removed from real news?

No. I don't know that it's been widely reported? I've certainly not heard large amounts about any of it. If it's not on the today programme, it's not proper news :P

  • Steven Roy26/11/2009 at 22:06

The proposed restructuring was announced yesterday, but it clearly caught investors by surprise.

Sounds like it is a popular time for similar announcements since the British government announced that in addition to all the money we know it had given to the banks they had given them a load beforehand.

  • Bassano Clapper26/11/2009 at 22:07

No. I don't know that it's been widely reported? I've certainly not heard large amounts about any of it. If it's not on the today programme, it's not proper news :P

there were theories last night in the USA that Dubai announced yesterday because the markets are closed here today.

All their offices were closed today as well. I'd say that probably had a lot to do with it. Let everyone breathe and calm down before they could sell anything in a mad panic.

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:09

Yes. More specifically, the company Dubai World and its developer subsidiary Nakheel.

I hope you didn't buy? :). Thanks for the info.

exactly. The same reason why markets close for 24 or 48 hours during a crisis. It never helps though just delays things.

No way! Just an interested observer. It boggled my mind that there could be so much demand in Dubai, particularly after I learned that most of the oil in the UAE is concentrated in Abu Dhabi.

  • paul26/11/2009 at 22:12

I'm watching thanksgiving football all afternoon...

I think Dubai is trying to be a financial centre and millionaire's playground

    Night Lou

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:14

so worse is to come tomorrow?

depends how many of the journos dug themselves in to turkey or journalism. Any company with large amounts of money in Dubai could be under watch. I got no idea how big or small this will go but I'm guessing tomorrows financial papers will be carrying which company stands to lose the most because of this. And then the market opens. I'm being negative though and I don

t understand the financial world too well. Disclaimer!

  • Jason Baker26/11/2009 at 22:15

    Jason! Hello!

I don't think i've seen you about before, so hello!

    Thanks!

Just discovered SPC after the Abu Dhabi GP, when I was seeking something to keep me entertained in the offseason.

    I have not been disappointed!

Now, I'm just mad I didn't come across you guys sooner.

    :)

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:16

Cool. Are you doing the whole turkey dinner thing with someone?

nope. I don't know anyone that well and did not back invites to stay home and "chill". The theory was to clean the house and think about what I need for my new apartment. Reality was eat food and fix my digital camera and set up the new laptop.

  • me26/11/2009 at 22:16

Any company with large amounts of money in Dubai could be under watch.

presumably with no obvious f1 ties and no race, it shouldn't affect f1 in the slightest?

Dan Brunell is in front of you and still doesn't have a drive.

We are hoping GMM pick up Dan's name. Jon was going to set up a fake website and give Dan a history of success

  • Alex Andronov26/11/2009 at 22:38

Now you know it is not just you

    Indeed.

  • jackie / saltire26/11/2009 at 22:38

they must do through advertising .. look at all the tag words they use against a stolen article so many more people will go there than the original source

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:43

    Night to the folks leaving

  • me26/11/2009 at 22:45

they must do through advertising .. look at all the tag words they use against a stolen article so many more people will go there than the original source

you can send their ISP a cease and desist, tweet ollie for more info. but you'll spend your life chasing down copycat sites.

  • Jon Waldock26/11/2009 at 22:45

    since we started.

thats really bad. has made me quite annoyed actually. if i find someone doing that to my stuff they shall feel my wrath.

  • paul26/11/2009 at 22:45

they must do through advertising .. look at all the tag words they use against a stolen article so many more people will go there than the original source

Obviously the scale is much larger than I imagine. I can't see there is much anyone could do about it though.

  • Dank26/11/2009 at 22:46

Are they just leeching off your RSS feed?

  • me26/11/2009 at 22:46

Are they just leeching off your RSS feed?

    yup.

  • jackie / saltire26/11/2009 at 22:46

Are they just leeching off your RSS feed?

I dunno, how would I know who has the rss feed?

  • Dank26/11/2009 at 22:49

    yup.

What would happen if you were to introducer Google AdSense into your feeds? Wouldn't they appear on that website as well?

I had a handful of sites nicking my content from my website through my feeds also. Annoyed the hell out of me. The only way around that I found was to show just extracts in my feed, instead of the whole thing. But then, I think visitor numbers were affected as a result, bizarrely.

  • The Boston Red Scott26/11/2009 at 22:50

Catch you all later. Need to singletask on something. Might be back later but who knows?!

  • Jon Waldock26/11/2009 at 22:50

then regular readers see ads too.

we've already bitched about james allen doing that though. i'd rather ignore the leechers.

Don't want to have any ads on our site as long as we can afford to keep it running without any

Cool cats use AdBlock for Firefox :-D

Strange one that. You'd think that an extract would be something to lure visitors in to read the full thing, but in practice it doesn't ever work like that.

  • me26/11/2009 at 22:54

twitter is an interesting one, because on there you get "no feed", just a link. yet i don't mind it.

but partial feeds annoy me. go figure.

  • Kathi26/11/2009 at 23:13

    *is deep asleep*

They annoy me most of all because I use my feed reader as a sort of archive of my favourite blogs. So even if the site is down I can still read the older posts and quite often in James Allen's case the feedreader caught the post in that tiny moment between the post going online and the site crashing :)

Also my reader has a search function. What good is that if I only get two lines of an article.

    #pethate

  • me26/11/2009 at 23:15

    #pethate

    fair point.

  • jackie / saltire26/11/2009 at 23:16

I must admit I read the first few lines in reader and then go to site for the full article. If the first paragraph doesn't "hook" me I wouldn't read the whole thing anyway

  • Amy26/11/2009 at 23:19

No we sort that out later, when we know how many are staying in our luxurious mobile home (we need a name for it).

I don't mind making the advance payment (since I'm in Euroland). I will hold you hostage in the Camping site's sanitary facilities until you pay me back of course ;)

  • Bassano Clapper26/11/2009 at 23:36

Boeing 787 fuselage is predominantly composite. F1 use is widespread. As the cost comes down, car manufacturers will use even more

  • Steven Roy27/11/2009 at 00:10

Composite investment is very good. It'll be a booming industry in the next decade

    in what way?

Lots of things that are currently made of metal will switch to composites as the behaviour of composites has been modeled in a lot more detail now and can be made to things that were impossible a few years ago
