Apparently, according to Wikipedia, there was a great storm on this day in 1703. It was called the Great Storm of 1703. Catchy. The wind got up to 120mph and thousands of people died. I don't think things are that bad yet, but I would certainly suggest the weather is commemorating this day in a similar fashion. Meanwhile, on to the F1 news:

  • Two more teams confirmed their young drivers for the upcoming test at Jerez. I mentioned them all in yesterday's F1 Minute and we even feature one of the youngsters on the Big Picture. BMW are doing the very honourable thing and giving their Formula BMW winners a chance in the F1 car, even though they don't know what the future holds. Very good stuff from Mr Theissen.
  • Talking of F1 Minute, I noticed that around about this time last year we were all discussing the fallout from Mark Webber's accident. As Steven said in the comments yesterday, it doesn't seem that long ago. Who would have thought that you could fast forward nine months or so and find the man fighting for the world championship?
  • In completely unrelated news, there's talk that Canada has secured it's place back on the calendar now with plans on the table to raise the funding required to host the event. The immediate reaction is one of joy, but Mr C is a little concerned about how they are going to raise the taxes in the space of one weekend. It does seem like a tall ask, but I'm sure they have contingency plans in place. Right?

That will be all for now. We are halfway through the week, and I've just noticed that it's only a month until Christmas. Bad times indeed! Nevertheless, I'll see you in the comments.

will has some insight on the empty mercedes seat. but first this is interesting:

"My sources tell me Chandhok was quickest, followed by Jani, and Hildebrand was plum last, by a fair margin. Jani (half Indian) and Chandhok (properly Indian) have both been passed over for the slower man. I’d wager it had something to do with finance. So much for your promise, Vijay."

    anyhow, the important bit:

"...with Hildebrand and his finances looking good for the third driver seat at Force India or possibly even USF1, what are the chances that it is di Resta that ends up at Mercedes alongside Rosberg in 2010?"

Mega podcast download-session done. A month's worth. I'll start listening next week.

I have decided not to study tonight but to do a massive session tomorrow. I was going to do some tonight and have a lie-in, now I'm going to get up at normal work time, drop off the car to be looked at, then come back and hit it.

I thought everything f1 had *everything* to do with finance. As for cheering Jon up we should give him the second seat at Merc. Problem solved.

okay what's say we build a time machine (stay with me) go back 12 months and go halves with Ross in the Honda team. 50 cents. We could have bought an f1 team. Then we'll give you a drive in that team, which now has to lose jenson or Rubens. Clearly my plan needs a bit more work. So go back in the time machine to before this comment and don't read it. Another problem solved.

So i get rid of Jenson and lou hates me, or Rubens and lukeh hates me...

not sure thats a route i want to go down ;)

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 00:32

yes, yes you should have ;)

Depends on the circuit I suppose. Since you own a chunk of an F1 team I am sure someone would give you the necessary pass

So am I. I thought Chandhok would be 2nd but not too far behind Jani.

how about, we travel back in time, we buy honda for a pound, then we travel forward in time and sell brawn for looooots, and then i buy a feeder team.

Mark Webber you cannot be in my team.

The halls I was at in 1st year were opposite Penny Lane. My room was round the back thank god but my bf had a room that looked right out onto it. Basically every 20 minutes from dawn until dusk bus tours would drive along there blasting out Beatles classics. Enough to drive you crazy.....

  • Pat W25/11/2009 at 01:15

just reviewing photos trying to find a new twitter pic, and have come to the conclusion I was better at it before digital cameras were invented with their stupid slowdown...

I disagree. Christmas never felt right in NZ, but here in Denmark, it seems better!

I had my first cold christmas i can remember last year, it is so not the same as proper christmas

But then you have a winter with nothing to do but be miserable. It's all wrong I tell ya!

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 07:19

But then you have a winter with nothing to do but be miserable. It's all wrong I tell ya!

I was in town yesterday and it was so super christmassy with the cold and the lights.... I don't see how you get the benefit of christmas lights if it's still light in the evening!

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 07:20

But then you have a winter with nothing to do but be miserable. It's all wrong I tell ya!

Christmas is stressfull, having it to cold to go outside and everyone on top of each other inside sounds silly... everyone relaxing in the garden is much better!

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 07:21

Yes mum? Get back to work......

Sure thing, but you should try and sleep at least

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 07:25

Sure thing, but you should try and sleep at least

Hehe it'll be a waste of time right now. I can't get back to sleep.... I'll have a nap later on before work. Promise :P

Hello :) Any calendar worthy news?

No. Today I am grumpy cos the stoopid weather kept me awake.

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 08:55

    Boo. I love Christmas!

Mm. It wasn't necessarily about the Christmas thing and more about the fact that it's almost the end of the year already. I could have phrased it better, I suppose, but... I don't like Christmas either.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/11/2009 at 08:59

Then you said it right then. But still, Boo!

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:04

Then you said it right then. But still, Boo!

Hehe. As someone who doesn't like presents, or turkey, Christmas isn't exactly my ideal time of year. Still, I'm much better than I used to be. A few years ago I would have declared this a #christmasfreezone.

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 09:06

Morning all. Have started to get back into the PC game Grand Prix World again. I was trying to take charge of McLaren, but I found some hints and tips posted on the game creator's site. He says to get commercial deals, forget about any hospitality and focus on getting the deals done. I guess that one thing which in some ways isn't true to life.

Also, I still would like to know how to play a PC game in windowed mode. That way it would be easier to let you guys keep track of what and how I'm doing :)

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 09:06

No. Today I am grumpy cos the stoopid weather kept me awake.

    Stupid weather!

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 09:07

No. Today I am grumpy cos the stoopid weather kept me awake.

If it helps todays weather here is:

    Sunny

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:08

    Sunny

    You surprise me!

It was raining all the way to work and now the sun has come out. British weather.

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 09:09

It was raining all the way to work and now the sun has come out. British weather.

Sun is out here in Wymondham, but it was rather cold when I went to put the bin out. Still, I can't see any clouds in the sky :P

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:10

Also, I still would like to know how to play a PC game in windowed mode. That way it would be easier to let you guys keep track of what and how I'm doing :)

I don't know the answer to that. Have you googled it?

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 09:10

    You surprise me!

    :D

Im trying to give everyone a daily update ;)

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:10

    Alt+Enter?

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 09:12

    Right click on launch?

    Alt+Enter?

Should I try these when the game is starting up?

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 09:13

Should I try these when the game is starting up?

right click it to launch, also try looking for an option in the start menu or folders

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:14

Should I try these when the game is starting up?

Doesn't work on all games but pressing Alt+enter at any time when playing the game forces games to go into a window. Not sure if it worked on GPW though. I'm sure there's a way to get it to work though.

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 09:14

OK, I'll try it now. Back in a sec.

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:15

right click it to launch, also try looking for an option in the start menu or folders

There's no windowed mode in the properties for shortcuts. You might be able to force it into a windowed mode though on the command line in the properties if you gimme a sec...

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:15

    G'morning everyone.

Morning Lukeh. Did your windows get fixed?

Doctor Who has a lot to answer for!

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 09:18

This is the answer after launch

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:18

    -window?

Yeah try adding -windowed or -window after the path for the shortcut. Again it doesn';t work for everything but it works sometimes for some games

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 09:18

Morning Lukeh. Did your windows get fixed?

    Reboot?

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:19

They've done the upstairs ones, now they're doing the downstairs ones. And I reeeeeally need to go into Uni to see a lecturer so it's not the best of things :(

I haven't played that game for years... Vista absolutely *hated* me trying to play it. I should try it on Windows 7 but everytime I tried to start it up before everything went slightly embarassing. Lots of flashing windows.

    yellow?

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 09:25

    yellow?

    My thoughts exactly!

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 09:26

    yellow?

    Yellow; -noun

    1. a color like that of egg yolk, ripe lemons, etc.; the primary color between green and orange in the visible spectrum, an effect of light with a wavelength between 570 and 590 nm.

    2. the yolk of an egg.

    3. a yellow pigment or dye.

    4. a Coldplay song ("And it was all Yellow...")

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:27

    Yellow; -noun

    :)

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 09:28

    yellow?

You must have seen a yellow sky before. Where it clouds over but it's not grey, it's yellow.

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 09:28

    :)

Yeah that's a bit of a personal stumbling block....

    I am. umm. not sure.

It's D-Day today. We are meeting with the course "leadership" so by the end of today either i'll be really encouraged and definitely want to stay, or know that I should get out there as quickly as possible!

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 09:39

Awwww I've just had the happiest news ever. One of my family friends that I've not spoken to in a few years has just got back in touch with me.

When we were more in touch, she was desperate for a baby. Been through IVF a few times with no joy. Pretty much gave up. I've just been sent this photo http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs042.snc3/12961_203118082081_603922081_3897296_1269702_n.jpg

I think that there wont be *that* much of an improvement, and i've already started applying elsewhere, so i guess part of me hopes it's not going to be good news, but i hope that they make it enjoyable enough this year

  • Alison25/11/2009 at 09:42

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 09:43

    What are your options Jon?

    Stay - 3 years

Stay - 1 year - then move to a different uni to do teaching (applied to Oxford Brookes, Winchester and Canterbury Christ Church)

Stay - 1 year - move to Swansea met - they'll take us into the second year of their motorsport course

    weirdo!

I prefer Christmas to be in the cold months because it suits ALL the traditions better. And you cut winter in half.

If Xmas is so good in summer, why do loads of Kiwi's have a midwinter Christmas in July?

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 10:48

Having Christmas Day in baking hot sunshine and a hot summers day makes my mind implode of fear. It sounds so odd to me!

I would like to have a white christmas just once, because the song tells me I should. But there is something so lovely about sitting around in the sunshine in deck chairs with the family after a giant lunch then going for a splash in the sea before dinner, when its still light, at 9pm :D

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 10:49

You must miss out on the best bits about Christmas though! Being all wrapped up when you can see your own breath. Christmas lights twinkling in the dark sky. Holding hands with mittens on.....

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 10:51

My idea of Christmas day is morning with the presents and seeing parents taking AGES to open theirs, all the family coming over and being wrapped around the dinner table for a yummg Christmas lunch with the windows steamed up, then chocolates and yummy food and snacks, getting dark at 4pm outside then all wrapped around the TV for all the awesome evening entertainment that Christmas Day usually provides with drinks and more chocolates interwined into these

Of course I say awesome entertainment on TV, I watch Dr Who anf by that time of day I've eaten so much and whatnot that I can't be bothered to move and am happy to watch whatever is on :)

thats pretty much exactly what my idea is too, except for the dark at 4pm bit, which is good because now that I'm a bit older the nighttime bit is my favourite. Our windows steam up from all the cooking. Om nom nom roast dinner.

This is the real reason you cancelled/postponed your trip to New Zealand, you are unwilling to experience the things I love!

Actually it was. Still, in Denmark, older music is embraced with a warm fuzzy hug...

Grand Prix World update - started as McLaren, managed to get a full roster of sponsors on board and now into 1999 with:

Drivers: Hakkinen, Coulthard, Moreira (made up Brazilian driver, picked him for test driver because he had the better stats than the other made up non-f1 drivers)

Main Sponsor: East (basically West cigarettes but changed because of tobacco laws)

    Engine: Mercedes-Benz (works deal)

    Tyres: Bridgestone (works deal)

    Fuel: Shell (works deal)

    Commercial manager: Stefano Domenicali

    Chief Designer: Neil Oatley

    Technical Director: Adrian Newey

You haven't heard of "tip-top", as in "getting it into tip-top shape"? Or "The Tip-Top Bar"? Perhaps it's an American thing, but I've heard Stirling Moss say it once or twice as well...

Hello to all. Just dropping by. ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 12:05

    Stefano! At Mclaren!

Hehehe, he is the best commercial manager in the game. In terms of technical directors, I like to offer deals to Newey, John Barnard, Pat Symonds and Ross Brawn, just so it covers all the bases. Patrick Head's in there too, but he's too much to start off with.

  • Scott Woodwiss25/11/2009 at 12:05

Also, I would put in the 2009 update but it never seems to install properly :(

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 12:13

    Buy him a Kindle?

he's not a reader at all. I am shocked he asked for books. They might be the only books he has read since he finished school 10 years ago.

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 12:13

    Buy him a Kindle?

"Unfortunately, we are currently unable to ship Kindles or offer Kindle content in New Zealand. " might be a problem too. I could ask him to move?

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 12:14

"Unfortunately, we are currently unable to ship Kindles or offer Kindle content in New Zealand. " might be a problem too. I could ask him to move?

That sounds acceptable to me. "I bought you a Kindle so you're going to have to move." He would be ungrateful if he said no.

  • Amy25/11/2009 at 12:15

That sounds acceptable to me. "I bought you a Kindle so you're going to have to move." He would be ungrateful if he said no.

Closer inspection has also told me that the books he has asked for are comics. So reading total since 10 years ago is still zero.

Hey, Not sure where to put this but I thought the sidepod community might be interested, I don´t know wherether you´ve commented on this already this week - and I imagine being podcast lovers you might have - but incase you haven´t did you know David Croft was on Radio 5s fighting talk this weekend? He appeared with Henning Wehn, Eleanor Oldroyd, and Greg Brady, 3 of my favourite panalists on the show and gave as good as he got, even if he was a bit cheesy at times. Definately worth a listen, even if just for his "Danke Danke" comment.

Katherine went to a shop today to buy a handbag. They only had one left but shock horror it didn't have any price or labels on it. So she took it to the counter and the person behind the till couldn't work out what to do, so Katherine looked the handbag up on the companies own website on her iPhone and read out the product code to the person on the till who entered it into her machine and bingo she could buy the handbag.

If you read this and wondered... I wonder which handbag it was... It was this one: http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/58956328

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:23

If it is an app that is like the internet, not having a back button should be illegal.

Exactly. It's a web page with a series of tabs in it. Depending on which tab you select a different set of data is shown within the tab. I think that if you switch from tab a to tab b and press back you should be back on tab a.

  • me25/11/2009 at 14:24

that could easily be content related to the same page, but instead of appearing beneath one and other, they are simply tabbed.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:27

If you have tabs, that's maybe not so bad.

I stood behind a user who three times in a row pressed the back button to switch back to the previous tab. Each time then going back to his bookmark to find the page.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:28

I stood behind a user who three times in a row pressed the back button to switch back to the previous tab. Each time then going back to his bookmark to find the page.

I mean it may have been a particularly useless user - we do have them.

  • me25/11/2009 at 14:29

That is the same as the flash thing. You're thinking like a developer.

it's not. my objection in flash is going from say the hompage, to the archive page, and not being able to go back.

if the content is related, but just displayed differently i think that's ok. no?

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 14:29

I stood behind a user who three times in a row pressed the back button to switch back to the previous tab. Each time then going back to his bookmark to find the page.

If you have a back button, you should be able to use it. But if there is another way to return to the content, then I will reduce the sentencing and say it is not illegal.

  • me25/11/2009 at 14:32

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:37

if the content is related, but just displayed differently i think that's ok. no?

Right got you... Yes... For example the data on the page also can be sorted by clicking the top of the table. I don't think the back button needs to "undo" that action.

But this is basically a workflow. You have a list of things that are at stage 1, stage 2, etc. I think that's a good place for the back button to work.

  • me25/11/2009 at 14:38

But this is basically a workflow. You have a list of things that are at stage 1, stage 2, etc. I think that's a good place for the back button to work.

    in that case, broken.

you can fix it in ajax, just like flash. add items to the browser history.

will has some insight on the empty mercedes seat. but first this is interesting:

    "My sources tell me Chandhok was quickest, followed by Jani, and Hildebrand was plum last, by a fair margin. Jani (half Indian) and Chandhok (properly Indian) have both been passed over for the slower man. I’d wager it had something to do with finance. So much for your promise, Vijay." {Comment #8}

Eek! I thought Hildebrand/di Resta was a sensible test combo, but if the sim times are what Will (or even Aleya in Will's comments section) says they are, then I begin to wonder.

That said, if Hildebrand's main attraction is financial, why haven't USF1 grabbed him?

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:42

click the coloured content buttons (top right). would you expect to flip between tabs using the back button?

I think thats not especially bad.

It's quite weirdly inconsistently implemented. On google calendar if you are on week view and you click on a day then pressing back throws you out of the calendar. However if you are in google maps they do some magic voodoo if you search for 3 different places you aren't actually moving page but it is actually stuffing things into the history.

Same thing that twitter does actually using the #home #personal trick to make the history change without the browser navigating (my guess is that it polls for the browser address and then says "aha time to load some different content)

Depends who's version you believe. The consistent thing is that Hildebrand was apparently slower than Jani and the half-Indian with Swiss nationality has more claim to Indian loyalties than the American.

i think i agree with him.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:56

Password boxes shouldn't cover up what you write with a dot anymore he thinks. He thinks it is hard for people to deal with and that nobody is ever lurking over your shoulder. He thinks they are particularly difficult to use on mobile phones (they are because of having to press the key 3 times to get a 'c' for example).

    However:

    a) people do lurk behind you

    b) I really especially want to mask my password if I am on a train

    and

    c) The real usability solution is to have a proper keyboard.

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 14:57

Best solution is to have the option. Masked by default, tick the checkbox to reveal it.

  • me25/11/2009 at 14:58

    b) I really especially want to mask my password if I am on a train

    but he says:

"It's therefore worth offering them a checkbox to have their passwords masked"

so the point is really masks should be off by default.

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 14:58

mine shows the character for a split second then masks it...

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 14:59

Best solution is to have the option. Masked by default, tick the checkbox to reveal it.

Which is what he suggests... It needs to be done in the web standards though... because phone software pretty much universally turns off auto predict in the password box.

Christmas is only stressful if you let it be - personally I really love the whole season...

Christmas 2007 was stressful because Grandma wasn't well (she got better during January, but it did take the shine off the holiday). Christmas 2008 was fine apart from karting-organisation-induced-stress moments.

I anticipate Christmas 2009 to be more like pre-2007 Christmases - i.e. fun and feeling semi-magical. It helps that the people who want presents this year are relatively easy to buy for. For example, my friends will either accept a bar of posh chocolate or an online message wishing them "Merry Christmas" (depending on how I know them). Dad's already said he doesn't want a present and isn't giving me one and Mum's present usually suggests itself. If I can find a suitable present for my brother and his family, that'll be all my Christmas shopping done.

  • Alianora La Canta25/11/2009 at 15:07

    As someone who doesn't like presents, or turkey, Christmas isn't exactly my ideal time of year. Still, I'm much better than I used to be. A few years ago I would have declared this a #christmasfreezone. {Comment #263}

How about having a nut roast (like a number of vegetarians do for their Christmas lunches)? Would that help, at least in providing some novelty value?

Seriously, we'll try to keep your spirits up over Christmas. The seasons may change but Sidepodders don't :)

why does his site look so bad, its not unusable, but its a long way from user friendly...

    from the article:

t's a decade-old design and it wouldn't take much effort to make it look nicer, would it? More importantly, surely he ought to be following all his own guidelines on usability.

Nielsen is not a graphic designer, and he reckons that smartening it up would put him in the middle range of site designs: "I'd be just one out of 10m. Redesigning it would take away the real value, which is that it stands out. But I'm probably the only one who could get away with it. I wouldn't recommend it to somebody starting out now!"

Although Use It annoys the people who think web design is graphic design, Nielsen doesn't mind. "There is something good about upsetting people, because it's making an impact," he says. But, he adds: "It's not good if you only annoy people," and you have to offer something of value.

It doesnt have to be pretty, it needs spacing, space is very important when browsing for infomation as it lets the mind sort the data.

Universally-usable websites do not exist. All a website owner can do is make their site as accessible as possible to as many people as possible and do what he/she can to aid those who still can't get what they want from their site.

What if you were very dislexic, it is hard to process things written like that

  • me25/11/2009 at 16:00

Yet still, if his site makes me go 'meh' then its probably not my problem

be honest, you're not exactly his target audience.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:01

There is basically no formatting on his site at all.

Obviously drop.io will have shrunk this image but is this about the same amount of spacing as you are seeing?

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/alertbox-gif

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 16:02

be honest, you're not exactly his target audience.

ooh i might be now with my new job :D

  • me25/11/2009 at 16:02

What it really means is that I have a disabilty which means some small concessions need to be made by website designers to enable me to access the site, and unlike most webmasters Jakob doesn't.

i'm confused. the reason sidepodcast.com is usable, is because of jakob. he taught me pretty much everything i know on the subject.

if you can comment on sidepodcast but you struggle elsewhere, it's only because of the work jakob has done.

  • me25/11/2009 at 16:03

ooh i might be now with my new job :D

you may be in the wrong job.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:03

I agree that that page should be laid out differently, it's actually tabular data it should be in a table. And he should explain why some articles are bold which means it is mystery meat navigation. And so yes... He should fix it.

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 16:03

you may be in the wrong job.

Perhaps... but they gave me a nice new vaio so im loving it for the moment :D

  • Christine25/11/2009 at 16:05

I agree that that page should be laid out differently, it's actually tabular data it should be in a table.

Tables are evil though. I don't blame him.

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 16:05

I fancy going for a swim tonight, would this be a stupid idea seeing as i havent swam for many many years? Do you forget how to swim? or is it like riding a bike?

    html tables = grrr

  • RG25/11/2009 at 16:07

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 16:08

Ahh. Now thats the problem. Really no other options?

I found some swim shorts, but it appears i have got thinner.....

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:08

it's not tabular data is it?

It's a list so he has made it a list. One of the problems is that the dates run into the titles as you look down the list. So it would be better if that was fixed.

I have just looked at the css for the site and as I suspected the gap between bullet points is not being set by him at all. So if your bullet points are too close together blame your browser not Jackob. His web page is telling your browser, "here is a list of things".

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 16:08

I found some swim shorts, but it appears i have got thinner.....

aha! the pull strings are long! result!

You dont forget, but you can loose all your techniqe, i used to race with times of a county standard when i was younger, but going back in the pool recently i was flapping about like a whale. I am teaching my self the techniques i have forgotten, to have a more efficient stroke.

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 16:09

One of the guys near me wont hear a bad word said about it...

I heart being able to sort by colour though :D

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:10

One of the guys near me wont hear a bad word said about it...

    Neither will I. Love Excel.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:10

    Neither will I. Love Excel.

Except the thing that is particularly annoying me with it at the moment.

  • RG25/11/2009 at 16:10

aha! the pull strings are long! result!

Now thats a relief. No humiliation there.

  • me25/11/2009 at 16:11

It's a list so he has made it a list. One of the problems is that the dates run into the titles as you look down the list. So it would be better if that was fixed.

    ahh, fair point.

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 16:11

Now thats a relief. No humiliation there.

lets just hope they dont come undone!

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:15

    ahh, fair point.

I know what I would do which is go for 02 Nov 2009 at the beginning

so it would look more like this:

    # 24 Nov 2009 - Velocity of Media Consumption: TV vs. the Web

    # 04 Nov 2009 - Agile User Experience Projects

    # 12 Oct 2009 - Streams, Walls, and Feeds: Distributing Content Through Social Networks and RSS

But Jakob would probably tell me that the title is more important than the date.

  • me25/11/2009 at 16:18

But Jakob would probably tell me that the title is more important than the date.

to me, the date is more important. so i'd agree with you.

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:18

If you don't want Jakob then may I recommend Steve Krug who is also fantastic: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dont-Make-Me-Think-Usability/dp/0321344758

    http://www.sensible.com/

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:19

to me, the date is more important. so i'd agree with you.

And it's out the way when you don't need to read it... It allows you to quick scan down the dates or the titles.

  • Stuart C25/11/2009 at 16:21

    Evening all.

Have written one and a half posts for the blog, which is now waiting only for

    a) Paypal to sort itself out, from which will follow

    b) Me sorting host out, and

    c) Getting the rather nice theme I've chosen, and finally

    d) The ugly process of getting to grips with Wordpress...

    Hello All

    Hello!

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:23

    ooh, i'll take a look.

It's a fast read. And will confirm a lot of things for you. It even has a chapter to give your boss to read when they disagree with you about design.

Also I have been accepted for the Googke Wave trial and have some invites available....do i need to put this on the wiki some place?

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 16:29

    wassup sir?

we,re trying to implement heuristic values into a text adventure type of game thing , but withot the text. Like, we have 9 squares in all with directions (north, northeast, etc) and it's getting the successor states to work with the heuristics but it ain't happening :( tis rubbish stuff

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:30

    #include

    main()

    {

    cout << "Lukeh hates this";

    return 0;

    }

  • Stuart C25/11/2009 at 16:30

does paypal think you're money laundering too?

Well, I signed up on Saturday morning and am still awaiting the 'two tiny transactions' that I then have to register in order to proceed.

Then, on Saturday afternoon – 20mins after KO in the rugby, to be exact – my bank rang me to say that somebody was trying to take 200 Malaysian ringits out of my account at a cashpoint. Very odd. I memory serves, 200 ringits isn't very much at all.

In other news, I was casting around on Amazon for a book about Wordpress, and in the 'customers who viewed this also looked at' box appeared a book entitled 'ProBlogger: Secrets For Blogging Your Way To A Six-Figure Income'. I fully intend to lampoon this in a subsequent post.

  • Lukeh25/11/2009 at 16:30

    alex speaks the troof :(

  • Alex Andronov25/11/2009 at 16:32

    ooops I meant of course:

    #include <iostream.h>

    main()

    {

    cout << "Lukeh hates this";

    return 0;

    }

Couldn't do it without good old iostream.h

(I did preview but didn't look properly)

  • Stuart C25/11/2009 at 16:32

    #include

    main()

    cout

    Que?

    }

Try Bing or Yahoo but Yahoo use Google search so you may get the same program. There is a language option in Google advanced search that may help

    hehe thanks though :)

  • Steven Roy25/11/2009 at 18:53

Steven does a space elevator need to be near the equator? if so why?

Erm... It can't be too near the poles because the reason it stays in place is because the heavy bit on the end is in orbit so needs to be rotating fairly quickly. Like launching a space vehicle the closer to the equator the better.

  • Nick in Dubai25/11/2009 at 18:55

    Cramp in BOTH legs.

He wants to build an elevator to the moon? That is going to be ever so slightly problematic because the moon orbits the Earth. It is not permanently above Manchester. An elevator is just a way of getting into orbit not to travel quarter of a million miles.

  • me25/11/2009 at 19:08

Well he is an architect... they do tend to go off on tangents.

Anyhow, i think i have sold him on a virtual tourism gallery so there is no danger of the moon crashing into salford quays ;)

  • Steven Roy25/11/2009 at 19:14

Well he is an architect... they do tend to go off on tangents.

    So will his space elevator.

Remember all the stuff about space rocks? 250,000 miles of space elevator is going to attract a lot of hits. He also has the slght technical problem that the moon's orbit is not round so the distance between it and us is constantly changing.

    Two points:-

Firstly perhaps Bernie is putting him up to it to help him bump Silverstone up a bit more..

    or

This may be Mr Gillett's only way out of personal bankruptcy and ruin so he's hanging onto his last hope however fragile...

Or he could just be completely certifiable...

    Or all three....

    if you can comment on sidepodcast but you struggle elsewhere, it's only because of the work jakob has done. {Comment #668}

It is possible for the student to improve on the master and clearly you have. Not many people could put the number of mods onto Wordpress and still have a functional, usable website at the end of the process ;)

And I do struggle in some other places. I just don't understand why a usability expert has a less usable website than most others I've encountered and doesn't even have the excuse of bad use of advanced technology...

The BMW Sauber saga seems to be getting wider coverage.

It is reported that BMW which has continued the development of the 2010 car is becoming increasingly alarmed at the lack of solid funding behind the deal it sold to Qadbak. It seems all they actually wanted was access to commercial rights associated with BMW Sauber's sixth position.

What can BMW do now, having realised they were duped in the sale of their team?

"Qadbak is in fact merely a front for Dubai-based, convicted British fraudster Russell King, who it is claimed is bidding to fund the team off the back of the commercial rights revenue that BMW-Sauber will have benefitted from for finishing sixth in the constructors' title chase in the 2009 F1 World Championship"

  • rowley25/11/2009 at 20:35

  • Journeyer25/11/2009 at 20:39

The team is based in part of their European corporate headquarters so anyone buying the team would also need new premises

In other words - this won't be a cheap buy. Effectively, Toyota are just selling their spot, then? I would think someone needs to seal the deal ASAP, as they'd need time to start building their 2010 car.

  • Rich25/11/2009 at 20:42

I dont think the structure of toyota would encourage an MB

my understanding is they would have to spin off a company to actually sell it - you can buy the design of their 2010 car though.

In other words - this won't be a cheap buy. Effectively, Toyota are just selling their spot, then? I would think someone needs to seal the deal ASAP, as they'd need time to start building their 2010 car.

Unless you have been building the car there is no ways to get onto the grid. I get the impression Lola really wants to be on the grid.

while i think buying that now would be a relative bargain (as it would be more advanced compared to those of the new teams), they need time to build the chassis then test it. if a deal isn't concluded by year's end, i don't see how they'll make it onto the grid.

  • Steven Roy25/11/2009 at 20:45

In other words - this won't be a cheap buy. Effectively, Toyota are just selling their spot, then? I would think someone needs to seal the deal ASAP, as they'd need time to start building their 2010 car.

my understanding is they would have to spin off a company to actually sell it - you can buy the design of their 2010 car though.

They can sell everything apart from the factory building but moving would be massively expensive and impossible in the timescale

But the FIA is demanding a bank guarantee from Qadbak. If they can't give that, there will be no place on the grid for them.

Awwww. It's Spinal Tap as lego characters! :)

  • Steven Roy25/11/2009 at 20:52

No-one is going to buy a team with no factory. It would be impossible to move it in less than 6 months and by then the season has started

  • Steven Roy25/11/2009 at 20:53

But the FIA is demanding a bank guarantee from Qadbak. If they can't give that, there will be no place on the grid for them.

not so much...ooooh i got hte last one!

  • Alianora La Canta25/11/2009 at 21:59

well.....i was swimming....and then got cramp in one leg...stopped for a bit, then kept going....then got cramp in the other leg....stopped for a bit...then kept going, then thought "shall i get out?" and then worked out i was near to my 400m, all i had to do was there and back twice.....so i started.....annnnnnnnnd......

    Cramp in BOTH legs.

Stuck in the middle of hte swimming pool, doing the most painful doggy paddle EVER.

    owwwwww. still hurts {Comment #807}

Oh no! That happened to me once (alongside several occasions when I've had it in one leg, which is bad enough in itself). Don't let it put you off swimming, though.

What I can advise is that if you get cramp at all, it's best to get out of the pool straight away and stretch that leg until the cramp goes away. This gives you chance to get oxygen into your system as well as move some of the lactic acid away from the area and get the affected muscle more relaxed again (making it less likely to get cramp again).

I would suggest taking a drink onto poolside as well (I take a litre of orange/lemon drink with me for each hour-long session I do) but lifeguards in regular sessions often take exception to this. All you can do is hydrate yourself fully before getting in.

  • Jon Waldock25/11/2009 at 22:02

Oooh yes, i saw some other people doing that, tis a good idea.

Don't let it put you off swimming, though.

Alas even if i wanted to i wouldnt, i'm not sure my local Tri club would have the same perspective as me if i said "can i just miss out the swimming bit? do a dualathlon instead? no? what do you mean get out?"

  • Alianora La Canta25/11/2009 at 22:04

    Be honest now y'all...just how painful are massages? {Comment #822}

Less painful than cramp, if that's what you're trying to fix. However, it does depend on the masseur. Personally I avoid cramps because I'm hypersensitive to touch, but for you it would probably be useful to have a massage given you've just had double cramp.

  • Alianora La Canta25/11/2009 at 22:07

I thought it was bad enough when my freshly-installed Norton Internet Security kept crashing Firefox. Now it appears to be crashing Twitter with a "503 Service Unavailable".

I fear it's something that i'm going to have to get used too as I do more and more exercise, my body's not used to it so will take some time. It probably got me worse today because I did a mammoth run yesterday

    Toyota havent quit yet.

    According to dieter they could wait all the way up to thursday evening before bahrain {Comment #847}

    They can't.

For one thing, they have to put in a driver list by close of (Paris) office hours on the Tuesday preceding Bahrain.

For another, the sea freight leaves for Bahrain about two weeks before the race, possibly earlier. If Toyota misses the boat, then it's missed the boat!

It is, however, true that they could theoretically wait a few weeks longer, assuming they get a car under development within the next two weeks should they decide to remain in F1.

    They have not withdrawn from the championship so there is nothing the FIA can do till they don't turn up for the first race. {Comment #852}

They've announced their withdrawal though, so the FIA could legitimately take that as indication of intent to leave even if Toyota never bothers to cancel in writing. If Toyota changes its mind, some fraught discussion would take place before a decision either way is possible because of the conflicting interpretations possible.

I meant to write "Personally I avoid massages" rather than "Personally I avoid cramps" (though I suppose what I originally wrote is also true). Massages are optional; it just so happens that with pushing your body that far beyond its limits, it may need that little bit of help recovering. F1 drivers get lots of massages for a reason, and it's not just because they can afford them...

The mammoth run definitely won't have helped. If you work yourself really hard one day, it's good to be gentler on yourself the next.

I think staying awake for another 6 hours is pushing it
